Baggage FAQs

You may bring one carry-on item onboard the aircraft, plus one personal item. See our Baggage page for further information.

Passengers traveling on Delta Connection flights with 50 seats or less are permitted to carry personal items onboard the aircraft. Due to limited overhead and under-seat space, larger items will be tagged with a pink Gate Claim/Planeside tag and loaded in the cargo bin. These bags will be returned to the passenger upon deplaning

All carry-on items must meet Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations and may not exceed 22" x 14" x 9". The FAA mandates that all carry-on items fit under a seat or in an enclosed storage compartment.

Our gate or flight personnel may need to further limit the amount of carry-on baggage for a particular flight, depending on the cabin storage capacity of the plane and the expected number of passengers.

Yes. See our Carry-On Baggage page for more information.

SkyTeam Elite/ElitePlus customers in the Main Cabin are subject to the current checked baggage fees. For full details and baggage fees , visit the Baggage page.

Some bag fees apply to passengers traveling internationally. The latest updates and exceptions to these fees can be found on the Baggage page.

If all flights are on the same itinerary, international fees and rules apply to passengers traveling internationally with a connection or stopover in the U.S.

If an international passenger travels to the U.S. and continues their travel within the U.S. on a separate ticket, domestic rules apply.

Complete rules can be found on the Baggage page.

Please visit our checked baggage fees page to find the most up-to-date information by travel region.

Please review the baggage allowance for active-duty U.S. military personnel when traveling on orders or for personal travel on our baggage and travel fees page.

We require outside personal identification on all checked baggage. We also recommend inside identification details, just in case the outside identification gets lost.

Remember to always carry medicine, money, valuable documents, keys, jewelry, cameras and other small fragile items in your carry-on luggage, just in case your baggage is separated from you for a time. And remember to never lock your luggage.

Unfortunately, we cannot assume liability for jewelry, cash, camera equipment or other similar valuable items contained in checked or unchecked baggage on domestic flights. See the Delayed, Lost or Damaged page for more information.

We do not assume liability for unchecked items unless they are given to our personnel for storage during the flight or otherwise delivered into our custody for travel.

Federal regulations require that a cane must be stowed for takeoff and landings in an approved storage compartment. Flexible travel canes, such as those used by customers that are visually impaired, can be stored in the area under passenger seats, as long as the cane doesn't protrude into the aisle or otherwise disturb the crew or other passengers.

These days, finding an affordable flight is only half the battle.

You may be the world’s most adept airfare bargain hunter, but if you don’t take baggage fees into account, you could be overlooking a major cost.

Luckily, showing up at the check-in counter with a huge suitcase doesn’t have to cost a fortune — or even a single penny if you use the right strategy. For travelers looking to cut down on the cost of flying, here are tips for saving money on baggage fees.

How to avoid paying checked baggage fees

1. know the fees.

The first step to saving money on baggage fees is knowing what they are before you get to the airport. Do your research even before you book a flight. Different airlines charge different baggage fees depending on the route and the type of fare you purchased. Sometimes there are also additional charges for sporting equipment, like skis or surfboards .

If you know you have to check a bag, compare fees across the airlines in addition to comparing ticket prices. Southwest Airlines is reliable option for travelers because it allows passengers two free checked bags per ticket on all flights, unlike many other airlines.

» Learn more: A quick guide to airlines with free baggage

2. Use the right credit card

If you carry an airline credit card , chances are you don’t have to worry about baggage fees. That’s because several top airline credit cards offer a free first checked bag for the cardholder — and sometimes for companions traveling on the same itinerary as well.

If an airline charges a $30 one-way checked bag fee, you and your companion could end up spending $60 each, or $120 in total, just to get your bags to and from your destination. The Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card comes with the free first checked bag perk for up to nine people on a reservation. If you use it frequently, that perk alone can pay for the annual fee several times over.

3. Book first or business class

If you’re trying to save money, booking a higher class may seem counterintuitive. You typically won’t save money doing so, but if you have several bags to check, a first- or business-class ticket may be more affordable overall.

Depending on your airline, folks who fly in a higher class have the privilege of checking bags at no additional cost. If you’re going to pay more in baggage fees, why not take the opportunity to fly in style? It’s at least worth it to check prices before you book.

»Learn more: Why you should fly first class at least once, and how to afford it

4. Get elite status or fly with someone who has it

Many airline frequent flyer programs allow members with elite status to fly with checked bags for free. For example, United MileagePlus Premier members flying in the main cabin get baggage fees waived for one to three checked bags, depending on the level of their status.

Getting elite status just to avoid the baggage fee might sound difficult, but there are some pretty easy ways to do so. If you have elite status with a hotel chain, you might be able to get elite benefits on a partner airline, too. United has a status match program with Marriott , for example.

The World of Hyatt Credit Card gives cardholders automatic elite status on Hyatt, which also has a reciprocal benefits agreement with American Airlines .

» Learn more: Full review of the World of Hyatt Credit Card

5. Use a military discount

Many airlines do not charge a fee for military members to fly with checked luggage. JetBlue lets active-duty military personnel and their dependents on the same itinerary fly with two bags each at no cost when they’re traveling for leisure. There’s usually an even higher free bag allowance when military members are flying for duty. Check your airline about baggage policies for service members and be prepared to show your military ID when you check in.

» Learn more: Military travel discounts you won't want to miss

6. Check your bag at the gate

If checking a bag is more a preference than a need, don’t check your small rolling bag at the check-in counter. Instead, wait until you get to the gate.

If your flight is relatively full, airline employees may offer free gate bag check to make room for everyone’s carry-on luggage. Take advantage of this service to avoid the struggle of finding free space in the overhead bins. Just remember that this method is a gamble, though, and your bag would obviously still have to meet carry-on luggage requirements.

7. Pack light

When all else fails, the best way to avoid baggage fees is to not check any bags. Most airlines allow passengers on standard tickets one free carry-on and one free personal item, such as a purse or laptop bag.

In reality, your personal item could be an overstuffed backpack, just as long as it can fit under the seat in front of you. Be sure to check allowable dimensions of a personal item and the carry-on in advance, or you may be required to pay for a checked bag at the gate.

American Airlines baggage fees and how to avoid paying them

Jordan Waller

Editor's Note

American Airlines recently updated its policy regarding checked baggage fees and carry-on guidelines. It includes increased fees for checked bags and changes to size and weight allowances.

If you're flying soon, it's worth studying up to ensure that you're not faced with unexpected charges — or, worse, not able to check your luggage at all.

In many cases, American Airlines customers will enjoy a free first checked bag or even two depending on their destination, elite status or whether they carry one of the American Airlines credit cards .

This guide will cover all the information you need to know about American's baggage policy and how you might be able to save money by not paying any fees at all.

American Airlines carry-on guidelines

make my trip baggage allowance

All passengers are entitled to bring a full-size carry-on bag and a personal item onto every flight, even customers who booked an American Airlines basic economy fare.

According to American, a personal item should be no larger than 18 inches by 14 inches by 8 inches, and it should fit underneath the seat in front of a passenger. Examples of personal items are backpacks, purses, briefcases, laptop bags and approved pet carriers .

The maximum size of a carry-on bag allowed on an American Airlines flight is 22 inches by 14 inches by 9 inches. All carry-on luggage must fit in the sizers available at the airport and/or in the overhead bin or under your seat.

Soft-sided garment bags, up to 51 inches, are also allowed as carry-on items.

American Airlines checked bag fees

make my trip baggage allowance

If you're flying on a domestic, transatlantic or transpacific American Airlines-operated flight, you can check up to 10 bags (with fees attached, explained below).

Those traveling through Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, South America and Brazil can check up to five bags — but possibly with some seasonal or route restrictions.

American Airlines checked bag fees vary according to several factors, which include:

  • The region you're flying to
  • The weight of your bags
  • Whether you hold a cobranded credit card such as the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® (see rates and fees )
  • Your AAdvantage elite status.

American Airlines domestic and short-haul international baggage fees

As of Feb. 20 , American Airlines now holds the dubious title of "most expensive checked bag fees" for all the major U.S. network airlines.

For domestic flights, you will now pay:

  • $35 for the first checked bag purchased online
  • $40 for the first checked bag purchased at the airport
  • $45 for the second checked bag purchased online or at the airport
  • $150 for the third bag purchased at the airport
  • $200 for the fourth bag purchased at the airport

For short-haul international flights, including Canada and Mexico routes:

  • $35 for the first checked bag purchased online or at the airport
  • $200 for the third and fourth bags purchased at the airport

American Airlines baggage fees for other flights

If you're boarding an international flight that takes you beyond North America, you can expect to pay even more for your checked bags with American Airlines.

Transatlantic and transpacific flights

All passengers (except those on basic economy fares) get one free bag for transatlantic and transpacific trips. Basic economy passengers will pay $75 for the first checked bag.

A second checked bag will cost $100, while fees for a third bag or more are $200 per bag.

South America flights

Fees for checked bags on travel to/from South America — excluding Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru and Suriname — start at $60 for a first bag and $100 for a second bag. A third bag or more will be charged at $200 per bag.

If you're flying to/from Colombia, Ecuador or Peru, basic economy fares will be charged $45 for the first bag, $100 for the second, and $200 for the third and each additional bag.

Travelers flying to Guyana and Suriname on a basic economy fare will be charged $35 for the first bag, $45 for the second, and $200 for the third and each additional bag.

American Airlines' overweight and oversize bag fees

Along with changes to checked baggage fees, American Airlines recently changed its fee structure for overweight and oversize bags for all travel on or after April 17.

Travel booked before this date will be charged under the old fee structure.

The fees for overweight and oversize bags are as follows:

Note that after April 17, American Airlines' oversize limit will change from 126 linear inches to 115 linear inches. Bags that exceed this allowance will no longer be accepted on American flights, and you will not be able to pay extra to fly with them.

The airline has detailed rules for checked bags to Cuba and Haiti on its website .

Traveling with sports equipment on American Airlines

Skis, snowboards and many other items can count as checked bags as long as they meet the overall size and weight requirements. American Airlines maintains an extensive list of items that you can check.

For the most part, there are no additional fees beyond normal checked bag fees — except for scuba tanks and windsurfing boards. For those items, you'll be charged a fee regardless of any free checked bag entitlements.

For scuba tanks, this fee is $150 up to 70 pounds. For windsurfing boards, you'll be charged $150 for every two pieces up to 70 pounds.

From April 17, you can no longer travel with javelins, pole vaults or hang gliders on American.

The general size and weight requirements for sports equipment are as follows:

  • Travel on or before April 16: Maximum linear size (length plus width plus height) of 126 inches, with a maximum weight of 70 pounds.
  • Travel on or after April 17: Maximum linear size (length plus width plus height) of 115 inches, with a maximum weight of 70 pounds.

For travel from Spain's Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD), the maximum length of any side of a checked item cannot exceed 43 inches.

How to avoid American Airlines baggage fees

make my trip baggage allowance

Thankfully, there are several options if you want to avoid paying American's checked baggage fees.

Pay with the right credit card

American Airlines has two primary card issuers: Barclays and Citi. With various cards across multiple issuers, the checked baggage benefit varies widely based on what credit card you hold.

The premium Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® comes with a free first checked bag for yourself and up to eight traveling companions on domestic flights operated by American Airlines. It also offers other American perks, such as Admirals Club membership and access for up to two guests traveling with you.

AAdvantage Aviator Red World Elite Mastercard and Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard® holders get a first free checked bag for themselves and up to four traveling companions on domestic flights operated by American.

Some American Airlines cards, including the American Airlines AAdvantage® MileUp® , don't offer any checked baggage benefits.

Also, note that free bags for the first and second checked bag fee and can't be "stacked" on top of other similar deals you may have from a different credit card or your elite status.

For example, an American Airlines AAdvantage Platinum member who also holds the AAdvantage Aviator Red card can't get a total of three free checked bags when traveling domestically, even though they're entitled to two as a Platinum member and one free checked bag with the credit card.

The information for the AAdvantage Aviator Red World Elite Mastercard, Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite Mastercard and American Airlines AAdvantage MileUp has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Take advantage of elite status allowances

All four elite status tiers in American Airlines' AAdvantage program offer checked bag benefits.

  • AAdvantage Gold and Oneworld Ruby members receive a first checked bag for free on all flights for themselves and up to eight traveling companions on the same reservation, up to 50 pounds per bag.
  • AAdvantage Platinum and Oneworld Sapphire members can check up to two bags for free on all flights for themselves and up to eight traveling companions on the same reservation, up to 50 pounds per bag.
  • AAdvantage Platinum Pro, Executive Platinum and Oneworld Emerald members can check three bags of up to 50 pounds apiece on all itineraries for themselves and up to eight companions on the same reservation.

Note that additional checked bags will be charged the standard amount for the additional luggage, rather than charged as if it's your first checked bag.

For example, say you have AAdvantage Gold status and you're flying domestically within the U.S. If you wish to add a second checked bag, you would be charged the $45 second-checked-bag fee rather than the $40 first-checked-bag fee.

Book a premium cabin

Passengers flying on premium fares receive an increased baggage allowance.

The following fare types allow for at least two checked bags for free:

  • Domestic first class
  • International premium economy
  • International business class

Flagship First and Flagship Business Plus passengers are able to check up to three bags for free.

Use credit card travel credits to cover fees

Several travel rewards cards come with annual statement credits toward travel purchases. Some cards offer a credit that you can use for various travel purchases, such as the Chase Sapphire Reserve and its $300 annual travel credit .

On the other hand, many American Express cards, like The Platinum Card® from American Express , offer annual airline fee credits , which are specifically for airline incidental fees. As long as you enroll in this benefit and select American as your airline of choice, you can get American Airlines baggage fees reimbursed by the credit.

Travel to one of these destinations

Excluding basic economy fares, passengers traveling to any of the following destinations are entitled to one free checked bag:

  • Transatlantic flights (including to the U.K. and Europe)
  • El Salvador
  • New Zealand
  • South Korea

Bottom line

While relatively straightforward in terms of its baggage policy, American Airlines now has the highest checked bag fees of all major U.S. network airlines.

All is not lost, though. There are still several ways to avoid checked baggage fees with American based on the flight you book, your elite status or your credit card.

The airline also allows a full-size carry-on bag and a personal item on all tickets.

Your baggage weight allowance

Our standard checked baggage allowance is 23kg per bag. How many checked bags you’re allowed will depend on your booking, cabin class and Executive Club Tier status. All tickets on British Airways, BA Cityflyer and BA Euroflyer include a cabin bag and hand bag.

You can check in more bags than your ticket permits when you pay to increase your baggage allowance.

If you are travelling on our hand baggage only (Economy Basic) fare, you are charged extra to put any bags into the hold as these fares do not include checked baggage.

The cost of each additional hold bag depends on your destination and how many more bags you want to check in over your hold allowance.

See your baggage allowance and cost of extra bags  using the calculator. More bags can only be paid for and carried when space is available, and excess baggage is permitted, on your flight. In some destinations, additional local taxes may also apply for additional bags carried in excess of your ticketed allowance.

Baggage FAQ

The maximum dimensions for an oversize bag in the hold are 190 x 75 x 65 cm.

A bag larger than the standard size, but within these maximum dimensions, is known as an oversize or out-of-gauge bag. It’s accepted as part of your checked baggage allowance, but tell us you’re bringing it, and check it in early, as it may need individual handling.

Let us know when you book, or at least 48 hours before your flight, by using the online chat on our Help page  especially if your oversize baggage item is sports equipment , such as a bike, skis or a golf bag.

Also, any oversize bag must be checked in at the out-of-gauge bag drop at least 90 minutes (one and a half hours) before your flight to ensure it has the best chance of travelling with you.

You cannot pool, share or combine your checked baggage allowance with another traveller, even someone in your travel party.

For security reasons, you must only check in bags that you've packed yourself. You are responsible for any bag that is linked to your name in the booking.

For any single bag that is over the maximum weight or number allowed on your ticket, you may be charged a heavy bag or extra bag charge.

On journeys with connecting flights that use a single booking reference, even if it includes other airline codes, your baggage allowance is generally determined by the airline that operates the longest flight in your itinerary.

You can usually check in your bags to arrive at your final destination if:

  • All your flights are under a single booking reference and ticket number, or
  • Your flights are with one world airlines under a single booking reference, even if you have separate ticket numbers.
  • Check in your bags for your first flight.
  • Collect your bags when you land – you may need to go through customs.
  • Go to Departures and check your bags in again for your domestic flight.
  • Collect your bags at your final destination.

If you’ve booked separate flights with different booking references to get to your final destination each flight is considered a separate journey. This applies even if all your flights are with British Airways, BA Cityflyer and BA Euroflyer.

You’ll need to check your bags in for each separate flight. Make sure to leave enough time between each flight to do this and get to your departure gate for the next leg of your journey. Simply follow these steps:

  • Collect your bags when you land - you may need to go through customs.
  • Go to departures and check your bags in again for your next flight.

Please be aware that on journeys with separate tickets and different booking references, your bags will not be transferred on to your next flight as it is considered a separate journey.

In case of delay, cancellation or other disruption to your initial flight, when you hold a separate booking on a different reference for your next flight, airlines are limited in the assistance they can give you for your onward journey/subsequent flight, just as they have no obligation to automatically check your baggage through to your next flight as each booking is considered a separate contract.

British Airways, BA Cityflyer or BA Euroflyer infant baggage allowance for a baby under 24 months without a seat, regardless of cabin, includes a 23kg bag checked into the hold. No extra baggage allowance can be purchased on a ticket for an infant without a seat.

There is no checked baggage allowance for you or your infant if you are both travelling on a hand baggage only (Basic) fare, and any additional hold baggage allowance cannot be bought for your infant.

Children, and infants with a seat, have the same free baggage allowance as adults.  Find out what other items you can check in for your family.

The above allowances apply to British Airways, BA Cityflyer or BA Euroflyer flights only.

You, as the Executive Club Member, must be travelling on the booking for those on your booking to get these benefits.

These allowances are not available on group bookings or to infants travelling without their own seat. Infants get one 23kg checked bag, no matter their cabin of travel.

Travel packages for students holding study visas, or similar official identification, may be available on some of our routes. You should search for student fares from the local ba.com website of the country where you will start your journey.

If no student travel offer is currently available for your journey, your ticket will still have our baggage allowance relevant to your route, so long as it is not an economy basic fare where there is no checked baggage allowance .

We don’t offer any extra free baggage allowance specifically for students on any other fares, but we do have discounted online rates for extra bags if you need to take more baggage on your flight: check our extra bag charge calculator .

If you are travelling on any specialist student fare, you must have your current official international student identification with you when you travel, or you could be refused carriage.

Duty-free purchases count towards your hand baggage allowance, so please store them inside your bag before boarding your flight. If your gifts or duty-free bags take you over the hand baggage allowance, your extra bags may be checked into the hold. If you’ve already used your free checked baggage allowance, you’ll have to pay for extra bags in the hold. If you pack wrapped gifts or presents in your bags, either those checked into the hold or in the cabin, they may need to be opened by airport security to check their contents.

You must be able to turn on any electronic items you want to take into the cabin, so please ensure all your devices are charged before you leave home.

Items that aren’t charged will need to be packed into your checked baggage and travel in the hold. You can put laptops in your checked baggage, however any spare device batteries and power packs must be carried in your hand baggage in the cabin.

You can also  purchase Wi-Fi  on board to stream your favourite TV shows or catch up on work while you travel.

If you need to take regular medication, it’s important to pack enough for your personal use during your flight into your smaller item of hand baggage. It’s guaranteed to travel with you in the cabin. Avoid packing it in your larger cabin bag as you may be asked to put it into the hold on busy flights. Additional medication for personal use at your destination can be packed in your checked baggage.

We recommend you carry a copy of the prescription for your medication to avoid delays at security or customs.

If you need to take essential medical supplies for your own use on your journey, like dialysis fluid, colostomy bags or liquid food, you can pack these into bags to be checked into the hold.

These items are in addition to your free baggage allowance, and you won’t be charged so long as:

  • Any additional bag only contains your medical supplies, and
  • You can show a letter from a medical professional confirming your need of these items

Please see our information on travelling with health conditions for the number of bags you can travel with and further advice.

There aren’t any limits to the weight or number of items of medical equipment you can carry with you for your journey, though they may need our permission to be brought on board . We recommend that you always carry a letter from a medical professional stating that you need the medical equipment on board or at your destination. This includes equipment like a CPAP machine, nebulisers, insulin pumps or a portable oxygen concentrator (POC),

If your journey includes a flight with another airline , their policies may be different. Please check before you fly.

A Brief Guide To United Airlines' Economy Baggage Allowance

  • A number of different factors affect an economy passenger's baggage allowance, including flight type (domestic or international), loyalty status, and booking class.
  • Basic economy tickets restrict carry-ons, with checked bag fees differing with the destination and offering no option to pay for a carry-on.
  • Standard economy allows full-sized carry-ons but shares similar checked bag fees with basic economy; Economy Plus benefits can include earlier boarding.

One may think that when flying United Airlines, an economy class ticket is simply an economy ticket, one which comes along with a standard set of baggage allowances. This, however, is not always the case, and there are multiple different kinds of economy tickets, all of which come along with their own set of baggage guidelines.

First and foremost, baggage allowances vary significantly by flight, with clearly distinguished offerings for passengers on domestic and international services. Furthermore, members of United's loyalty program or those who hold Chase/United cobranded credit cards can also receive baggage perks and avoid certain fees.

However, the biggest distinguishing factor between United's different baggage allowances within the economy cabin is between different types of tickets. From basic economy tickets, which come along with the fewest bells and whistles, to the most flexible economy plus tickets, baggage allowances and fees vary heavily. In this article, we will take a deeper look at baggage allowances for passengers in United's economy class cabin.

Basic Economy

When analyzing baggage allowances, it is best to start with United's most restrictive fare class. With a basic economy ticket, passengers will be restricted from bringing a standard carry-on-sized bag onboard the aircraft.

Basic economy passengers can only bring one personal item onboard to stow under the seat in front of them. According to NerdWallet , passengers can check bags with the following fee schedule:

It is important to note that there is no opportunity for basic economy passengers to travel with a carry-on by paying a fee. If a passenger with a basic economy ticket brings a carry-on to the gate, they will be charged the appropriate fee to check the bag.

Standard economy

Standard economy class tickets come with a more generous baggage allowance than basic economy bookings , as would be expected. With a regular economy ticket, United passengers can bring a full-sized carry-on bag onboard the aircraft, which can be stowed in the overhead bins.

For checked bags, however, there are relatively few benefits to a standard economy ticket over a basic economy one. When checking a bag, all fees are identical to those for basic economy tickets, except for a free bag for flights to or from Europe.

Delta Economy vs United Economy Which Is Better?

Economy plus.

With an Economy Plus ticket, passengers are entitled to a standard carry-on bag and a personal item, which is identical to the offering of a standard ticket. Fee schedules also remain identical for checked bags, offering limited benefits here.

There are some advantages to a United Economy Plus ticket when it comes to baggage allowances. While there may be few directly observable benefits from a financial perspective, Economy Plus passengers are more likely to be in earlier boarding groups, limiting the potential of having to gate-check a bag. These passengers will also be seated towards the front of the aircraft, where they will be able to exit the aircraft more quickly.

Spirit airlines' 'bundle' packages: everything you need to know.

You’ve reached your account maximum for followed topics.

  • Spirit Airlines offers packages for fees: Boost It and Bundle It, with seat selection, baggage, and shortcut boarding.
  • Baggage fees for carry-ons and checked bags vary depending on the route, time of payment, and weight of the bags.
  • Spirit's membership program, Spirit $avers, offers discounts and points for flights and fees, with prices from $69.95 to $129.90.

Spirit Airlines started as a typical, full-service airline. However, the airline changed its business model in 2008 and became the Spirit Airlines we know and have a love/hate relationship with. The airline marketed itself as the only unbundled airline, with no-frills tickets that offer point-to-point travel for just the passenger and a personal item.

However, times have changed, and in 2017, Spirit Airlines introduced plenty of bundles for passengers to choose from. It is far from the unbundled airline it once was. But all these fares, bundles, and add-ons overwhelm passengers trying to book a cheap flight. This guide will outline the different types of bundles Spirit offers and which one you should choose.

For this guide, we will use the values sourced by Nerdwallet for a $26 flight from Seattle to Las Vegas.

Bundle packages

Spirit offers two main packages: Boost it and Bundle it. Here’s what you need to know about both of these bundles.

For an additional $52.99, the Boost It package offers the following:

  • Seat selection (limited to standard seats and the exit row)
  • Personal item
  • Checked bag plus 10 lbs added weight (50 lbs total)

Shortcut boarding

For an additional $64.99, the Bundle It package offers the following:

  • 2x flight miles

Planning ahead is paramount when flying ultra-budget carriers like Spirit Airlines and its competitor Frontier Airlines . The more you need the airline to do, the more the fees increase. A simple example is the check-in process.

Check-in fees

You can check in online for free and print your boarding pass at home. However, if you forget to do so and have to check in at the kiosk at the airport, you’ll have to pay an additional $2 fee to print your boarding pass. If you want a human touch, you’ll be charged $10 for an agent to check you in and print your boarding pass at the counter.

However, there are circumstances where the fee is waived. For example, the fee is waived if you have a lap infant, have a military ID or other ID that prevents an online check-in, or are traveling as an unaccompanied minor.

Baggage fees

Most airline ticket prices include baggage fees for personal items, carry-ons, and one or two checked bags. However, Spirit charges passengers for all bags except a personal item.

The airline defines a personal item as anything 18 by 14 by 8 inches or smaller. Most modern backpacks are bigger than this, so passengers will have to purchase extra baggage. The cost of bringing on bags is often more than the cost of flying the person. Here are the size allowances for bags by Spirit:

  • Personal item: 18 x 14 x 8 inches
  • Carry-on: 22 x 18 x 10 inches, including handle and wheels
  • Checked bag: Maximum linear length of 62 inches, including handles and wheels

Spirit also doesn’t have fixed baggage prices. They fluctuate depending on the route and when you pay for them.

As you can see, the closer you get to departure, the more you pay. Passengers who add baggage at the last minute rather than when they first book the flight can end up paying twice the fees.

In addition, the prices also change based on the weight of the bags. The prices in the table above are for bags that weigh 40 lbs or less. If you carry more weight, there is an additional charge on top of the baggage fee.

Membership benefits

Spirit has a membership program that gives customers discounts and points called Spirit $avers, which they can use towards flights and fees.

The membership costs are as follows:

  • $69.95 for 12 months
  • $$99.90 for 18 months
  • 129.90 for 24 months

Upon signing up for the service, the fees must be paid in a lump sum. It offers customers discounts, special fares, and other amenities.

Spirit Airlines Baggage Fees: Everything You Need To Know

As the largest ultra-low-cost major American airline, Spirit charges for luggage - including carry on luggage.

Seat selection fees

Many airlines today charge passengers an extra fee for selecting a particular seat. However, ultra-budget airlines are the pioneers of this practice. At Spirit, seat reservations start at a minimum of $5. These fees also fluctuate depending on the route.

Standard seat selection costs $12-18 on the previously mentioned route. However, seats with extra legroom will set you back even more: $40 for the wider, extra-legroom seats in the front row and $20 for the emergency aisle seats.

If you want to get through security and be the first onboard the aircraft, you can. You just need to pay another fee. Spirit calls it “shortcut boarding,” the service starts at $7.99 but doesn’t exceed $20.

However, it isn’t a TSA pre-check. You’ll still have to go through the usual rigamarole, but you’ll have an expedited lane, so it’ll be slightly faster.

Food and beverage fees

In full-service carriers, fees for in-flight food and alcoholic beverages are often complimentary. Airlines in the US have always been more frugal, but even regional airlines such as Delta Connection will throw a packet of peanuts your way. However, Spirit offers nothing for free.

All refreshments are chargeable. Coffee costs $2, while sodas and juices cost a dollar more. Alcoholic beverages like beer and wine will set you back $8, and snacks like cookies and chips start at $3.

Only a carry-on for extended trips: 4 tips to pack like a pro | Cruising Altitude

make my trip baggage allowance

  • If you’re traveling for a long time, don’t be afraid to do laundry while you’re away.
  • Shoes are probably the bulkiest items you’ll pack, and if you can manage to bring one or two versatile pairs, you can save a lot of space in your suitcase.
  • When you’re packing you should ask yourself: how many times in your regular life do you do multiple outfit changes per day?

One of the best marks of a frequent traveler is being able to pack quickly and efficiently. It’s likely part of the reason that people who fly a lot are so eager to get on the plane as soon as possible because the faster you board, the more likely you are to secure convenient overhead bin space and not be forced to check your carry-on bag. Most frequent flyers, myself included, avoid checking a bag whenever possible.

It may seem daunting to take a 10-day trip with just a small rollaboard, but I promise it’s possible. I talked to Wilson Santiago Burgos , founder of Mochileando.com and regular contributor here at USA TODAY, who is currently on a three-month trip with only a backpack.

We compared notes on how we economize our packing, and while we don’t use all the same strategies, between the two of us we hope these four tips can help you in your own travels.

1. Lose the shoes

This is my biggest advice to almost everyone who’s trying to reduce their luggage. Shoes are probably the bulkiest items you’ll pack, and if you can manage to bring one or two versatile pairs, you can save a lot of space in your suitcase.

On his current trip to Central Asia, Santiago told me he only brought sneakers and a nicer pair of shoes for dinner and city activities. For warmer weather, you might only need flip-flops and dinner shoes.

“One technique I use always to save space in my luggage is I always wear the biggest shoes I bring when I fly,” Santiago told me.

And that’s something I do as well. Of course, I’m not wearing my snowboarding boots on the plane for a trip to the mountains, but I’ll wear regular snow boots while I travel and pack a pair of sneakers if need be for that kind of trip.

2. Don’t be afraid to do laundry

I’ll confess I don’t usually travel long enough for this to be an issue, But Santiago told me he often travels for months at a time with only a backpack, and the key to that technique is not being afraid to do laundry while you’re away.

“When I’m traveling too long I have clothes for 7-10 days so I wash my clothes at the hotels,” he said.

“Last week I washed my clothes in Uzbekistan and it was $14, it was so cheap,” Santiago added. “If you do the math, it’s probably cheaper to wash clothes than to pay for a checked bag every time you have to take a flight in a trip of three months.”

Last week's Cruising Altitude: Why airport bathrooms are gaining attention

3. Make a list

This was a big point of difference for us. I pretty much never make a paper list for packing. I have my own routine and usually know what I need to bring. I often just pack a few hours before I leave, especially if I have an evening flight, and count out the items I’ll bring by day.

Santiago, on the other hand, told me he makes a list every time.

“The list for me is very important: you save space, but you won’t forget anything important like medicines, technology, passport,” he said.

In his defense, he may be right. On a recent trip, I forgot to pack toothpaste for the first time in my life. Maybe it’s time for me to start getting more organized, too.

From 10Best: Best pet carriers for dogs, cats, and furry friends of all shapes and sizes

4. Do a post-mortem

You don’t have to feel like a failure if you don’t manage to pack light on your next trip, but if that happens and you want to travel lighter on the one after that, you can do some reflection when you get home.

“Ask yourself one question: In the last trip that you did, did you use all the things that you have in your bags? If the answer is no, you know you have space to improve your packing,” Santiago said. “My experience is 70%-80% of the people, they will tell you they didn’t use all of the things they packed on the last trip.”

Now listen, I’m not a purist here. I think it’s a good idea to bring a few extras: maybe you’ll need a change of underwear or you’ll spill something on your shirt and want to swap it out. But honestly, when you’re packing you should ask yourself: how many times in your regular life do you do multiple outfit changes per day? You can avoid overpacking by bringing only what you’d use on a normal day, so long as you don’t need any specialized gear.
