‘Fun-enough tunes. Big choruses. Nice guy.’: A Canadian journalist watches his first American country music show

Our writer braved the rain and (another) thunderstorm warning to watch Luke Combs at Philadelphia's Lincoln Financial Field. Here’s what he thought.

Luke Combs performing Friday at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. He played also played Saturday, wrapping the U.S. portion of his world tour.

Country-pop chart-topper Luke Combs wrapped the U.S. leg of his 2023 world tour with a pair of weekend shows at Lincoln Financial Field. Friday night’s concert was beset by rain delays , lightning, mass confusion, and, finally, a late-night set that ran into the wee hours of Saturday morning. (Buzz around the Linc was that the organizers happily forked over the fine for violating the city’s 11:30 p.m. curfew. The fee, one presumes, would probably be far less than refunding a sold-out crowd.)

Saturday’s concert suffered its own weather setbacks, as an early-evening rainstorm delayed openers Lainey Wilson and Riley Green. But the full touring retinue would take the stage, in due time, culminating with a triumphant headlining set by Combs, whose music this reporter hadn’t, until this evening, heard much of.

As a Canadian living in America, I’ve had the U.S. country-pop industrial apparatus largely under my radar. That said: As a native of the land that exported Shania Twain, I’m well aware that, for some time now, country music has long been (some kind of) pop, or mainstream radio rock, shellacked with a little twang, and decked out in a Stetson (or, of late, mesh-back trucker cap).

So it was no real surprise that an artist I’d seldom heard, who — as he boasted Saturday night — has moved millions upon millions of records, could sell out a football stadium. For his part, Combs seems like a genuinely likable guy: affable, with an easy smile, resembling an old-timey lumberjack, or bottom-of-the-card regional wrestler.

A filmed trailer splashed on big screens before the show set up his hard-luck story: a guy from nowhere (aren’t they all?), who made it big, despite all odds. What odds?, I found myself wondering.

I suppose he’s not exactly tabloid handsome; but then country and western music’s history is riven with faces whose ruddiness stands as a measure of their authenticity.

That country music is as slick and polished as any popular genre — if not slicker and even more polished — is an obvious observation. Combs’ big, flashy stage show had a well-oiled, routinized, exactingly professional feel. Every humbling thank you to the crowd seemed scripted, every “surprise” guest appearance (by openers Green and Wilson) timed like clockwork. And that’s fine.

What sticks out about Combs — and country-pop at its most mainstream, stadium-scaled level — is not its slickness, but its underlying desire to seem un-slick . “Thank you for supporting country music!” the guys holler from the stage, as if it’s some struggling, little-engine-that-could genre. As if Nashville isn’t basically the new epicenter of the American culture industry. Like they don’t have brand sponsorships advertised on jumbotrons and QR codes flashing on screen that link to merch stores selling $80 vented button-up fishing shirts. As if they’re not playing in a professional football stadium where a beer costs, at the low end, $16.50 a can.

Also — and I swear I’m not trying to be overly salty — I found it a bit weird when Combs said that his song “Beautiful Crazy” was his first dance at his wedding. Playing your own song as the first dance at your wedding just seems a little me-me-me to me. But I suppose his wife was probably into it. The song’s about her, after all.

At the end of the day: fun-enough tunes. Big choruses. Nice guy. People openly weeping and singing along to every word. I would never dare begrudge anyone their version of a good time.

1. “Lovin’ On You”

2. “Hannah Ford Road”

3. “Cold As You”

Luke Combs Adds Stadium Shows to 2023 World Tour

by Cillea Houghton June 5, 2023, 12:03 pm

Luke Combs is extending his 2023 World Tour schedule.

Videos by American Songwriter

The country superstar has announced four new stadium shows to his already packed schedule. Due to popular demand, Combs has added second shows at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida, on July 7; Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina, on July 14; Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, on July 21; and Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on July 28. They join already announced dates in the aforementioned cities. Combs will perform July 7-8 in Tampa, July 14-15 in Charlotte, July 21-22 in Foxborough, and July 28-29 in Philadelphia.

“After we got to play two shows in Nashville, I decided I wanted to play more shows for the fans, so I got with my team and the stadiums and luckily all of the July dates lined up for us, so we decide to just do it!” Combs says in a press release. “I’m really excited to be able to bring more music to more fans.”

Tickets for the new dates go on sale Friday (June 9) at 10 a.m. local time.

The hitmaker is bringing an impressive slate of artists across country and Americana genres as his supporting acts for the newly announced dates: Lainey Wilson, David Lee Murphy, Old Crow Medicine Show, Turnpike Troubadours, The Avett Brothers, Gary Allan and Brent Cobb. Cody Johnson, Riley Green and Lane Pittman will also serve as opening acts throughout the tour that kicked off in March and continues through October where Combs ends the trek with a two-night, sold-out stay at the O2 Arena in London.

The tour is in support of his latest album, Gettin’ Old. Released in March, the album hit No. 2 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart and No. 4 on the all-genre Billboard 200. It features lead single “Love You Anyway” and a cover of Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car,” both of which are currently climbing through the Top 15 on country radio. It’s the companion album to Growin’ Up, which was released in June 2022.

TWO NIGHTS IN LOS ANGELES, NEW JERSEY, HOUSTON, PHOENIX, SANTA CLARA AND MANY MORE

EARNS 22 NEW RIAA CERTIFICATIONS

"The best country singer of his generation"— Esquire

"Combs is a superstar…he will likely remain as such for decades to come"— The Tennessean

August 15, 2023—Reigning 2x CMA Entertainer of the Year Luke Combs will perform 25 U.S. stadium shows next year with his " Growin' Up and Gettin' Old Tour ." Newly confirmed stops include two nights at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium, Los Angeles' SoFi Stadium, Jacksonville's EverBank Stadium, Santa Clara's Levi's ® Stadium, Houston's NRG Stadium and Phoenix's State Farm Stadium among many others. See below for complete itinerary. Special guests for the Friday night shows include Cody Jinks, The Avett Brothers, Charles Wesley Godwin, Hailey Whitters and The Wilder Blue, while the Saturday shows will feature Jordan Davis, Mitchell Tenpenny, Drew Parker and Colby Acuff.

Of the tour, Combs shares:

"We got an opportunity to do two shows in some U.S. markets on the World Tour, but when I found out we were going to be able to do two shows for most all of the cities on the 2024 tour, I decided I wanted each show to have their own unique set up of openers, as well as my own unique setlist. I thought this would give people an opportunity to come to both nights if they want, but see two completely different shows.

With Country music being such a wide genre and being a huge fan of it all myself, I wanted to open up my stage to acts that lean into Outlaw, Americana and Red Dirt on Friday nights, as well as having a night with people I have toured with in the past, who are more contemporary country. I'm super excited to have both groups be out on the road with me for the Growin' Up and Gettin' Old Tour!"

The 2024 dates follow Combs' massive World Tour, which runs through this fall including upcoming sold-out shows in Australia and Europe. With 44 shows across 3 continents and 16 countries, the tour is the largest ever for a country artist and has broken records across the globe.

The performances add to yet another triumphant year for Combs, whose new version of Tracy Chapman 's Grammy-winning song, " Fast Car ," has spent five consecutive weeks at #1 on Billboard 's Country Airplay chart. This is Combs'16th consecutive #1 single at country radio, yet another historic feat. The song was also recently certified 2x Platinum, has garnered over 435 million global streams, is currently #1 on the Hot AC chart and #2 on Billboard 's all-genre Hot 100 chart. With these

achievements, "Fast Car" is the first song by a male solo artist to ever top both the Hot AC and Country

Airplay charts.

Additionally, Combs recently earned 22 new RIAA certifications including for his albums This One's For You (6x Platinum), What You See Is What You Get (4x Platinum), Growin' Up (Platinum) and Gettin' Old (Gold), as well as for his songs "Hurricane" (9x Platinum), "When It Rains It Pours" (9x Platinum), "She Got The Best Of Me" (7x Platinum), "Beer Never Broke My Heart" (6x Platinum), "One Number Away" (5x Platinum), "The Kind of Love We Make" (3x Platinum), "Fast Car" (2x Platinum), "Doin' This" (2x Platinum), "Houston, We Got A Problem" (2x Platinum), "Going, Going, Gone" (Platinum), "Love You Anyway" (Platinum), "Moon Over Mexico" (Platinum), "Brand New Man" (Platinum), "Growin' Up and Gettin' Old" (Gold), "5 Leaf Clover" (Gold), "Dear Today" (Gold), "Honky Tonk Highway" (Gold) and "This One's For You" (Gold).

Combs is currently celebrating the release of his new album, Gettin' Old —a companion to his acclaimed 2022 record, Growin' Up —which was released earlier this spring via River House Artists/Columbia Nashville (stream/purchase here ). Receiving critical acclaim, The New York Times praises, "…grounded in country, complete with fiddle fills, but it's also pointed toward a wide pop audience" while Billboard proclaims, "his electrifying-yet-earthy voice soundtracking this time in his life as a husband, father and entertainer at the top of his game" and American Songwriter declares, "He's a rock star at this point." Produced by Combs, Chip Matthews and Jonathan Singleton, Gettin' Old is Combs' fourth full-length album following Growin' Up , 2019's What You See is What You Get and This One's For You .

A Grand Ole Opry-member and 8x CMA, 3x ACM, 3x Billboard Music Award-winner, Combs has also partnered with Opry Entertainment Group to open a massive multi-level entertainment complex in downtown Nashville, expected to open summer 2024.

On Wednesday (Sept. 7), the Country Music Association revealed its slate of final nominees for this year’s awards ceremony, with Combs earning nominations for entertainer of the year, male vocalist of the year and album of the year for Growin’ Up .

Wilson emerged as this year’s leading CMA Awards nominee in her inaugural nomination year, earning nominations in six categories, including album of the year for Sayin’ What I’m Thinkin’ . Her nominations haul makes Wilson the fourth artist in CMA Awards history to earn six or more nominations in their first year on the ballot, after Glen Campbell (1968), Brad Paisley (2000) and Kacey Musgraves (2013).

Johnson’s CMA nominations include male vocalist of the year, new artist of the year, as well as single of the year and music video of the year (both for his No. 1 Billboard Country Airplay hit “‘Til You Can’t”).

Country fans are going to need to start planning for 2024.

Luke Combs announced his plans on Tuesday for the Growin’ Up and Gettin’ Old Tour. The string of North American tour dates includes 25 shows across 13 U.S. cities, as well as one date in Canada.

The country music star, 33, will kick off the upcoming live dates in April 2024 in Milwaukee and eventually wrap up the shows in Houston in mid-August 2024.

All but one U.S. city tour stop will include two shows — one on Friday night and one on Saturday — and the set list is scheduled to change depending on the date. (There will only be one concert in his tour stops in University Park, Pennsylvania and Craven, Canada.)

The “Fast Car" cover singer will also be joined by a handful of special guests each night. On Fridays, Cody Jinks, The Avett Brothers, Charles Wesley Godwin, Hailey Whitters and The Wilder Blue will play, and on Saturday he will be joined by Jordan Davis , Mitchell Tenpenny , Drew Parker and Colby Acuff.

In a press release, the "Hurricane" artist shared his excitement about hitting the road. “We got an opportunity to do two shows in some U.S. markets on the World Tour, but when I found out we were going to be able to do two shows for most all of the cities on the 2024 tour, I decided I wanted each show to have their own unique set up of openers, as well as my own unique setlist. I thought this would give people an opportunity to come to both nights if they want, but see two completely different shows,” he said.

The CMA Award winner continued, “With Country music being such a wide genre and being a huge fan of it all myself, I wanted to open up my stage to acts that lean into Outlaw, Americana and Red Dirt on Friday nights, as well as having a night with people I have toured with in the past, who are more contemporary country. I’m super excited to have both groups be out on the road with me for the Growin’ Up and Gettin’ Old Tour!”

Flatland Cavalry have their work cut out for them in the coming weeks and months. They’ve already been announced as one of the big beneficiaries of the massive stadium tour Luke Combs is throwing this year, opening the shows with Brent Cobb, Lainey Wilson, and Riley Green. They’re also taking the stage at the San Antonio Rodeo on February 25th as one of the finale acts. But they won’t be sitting on their laurels in between. Announced on Monday (1-16), Flatland Cavalry will be playing shows throughout the Eastern United States through late July, including numerous dates in Canada. Coming along for the ride will also be a very cool set of openers that includes Cole Chaney, Colby Acuff, Brent Cobb, Pony Bradshaw, Emily Nenni, Grady Spencer and the Work, The Steel Woods, and Meghan Patrick. And don’t worry all of you folks on the West Coast. This only covers half the year, so who knows what the later portions of 2023 have in store. Along with their last studio album, the highly-rated Welcome to Countryland from 2021, Flatland Cavalry also recently released an acoustic EP called Songs To Keep You Warm to tide folks over through the Winter. The track “Mountain Song” from the EP was just featured on an episode of Yellowstone —the debut for Flatland Cavalry on the popular series. Tickets for all headlining dates go on sale Friday (1/20) at 10 AM Central.

Great news! Last time I saw them was in NYC right at the start of covid in 2020, great show!

Wreckem’ Cleto!

' src=

why is Arizona neglected by seemingly every red dirt country artist?

' src=

They can’t find Wisconsin most of the time either.

' src=

Bill, There might be more than you think.

In 2022, I saw 49 Winchester, Sunny Sweeney and American Aquarium within two months of each other at Shank Hall. William Clark Green played Shank this past fall. Nikki Lane and Jaime Wyatt played there in December but I missed it. Jamie Lin Wilson played at a bar in Rock County last summer.

I have seen Cody Jinks twice in Milwaukee, once with Randy Rodgers and once with Ward Davis. Mike and the Moonpies three times in the past six years.

Madison also gets a fair share of shows by Red Dirt or similar artists.

That being said, there is always room for more.

' src=

Of course I’m ecstatic they’re back at Joe’s On Weed st the day before Soldier Field. They were great last time! Kind of wish and thought they’d of graduated to the bigger venue Joe’s Live. Still looking forward to the more intimate atmosphere.

' src=

Flatland is a pretty damn good band. Wish them success.

Most bands are usually skipping the New York City area as well too, too expensive for them to park stay and get ripped off.

Flatland was really pysched to be at The Hammerstein Ballroom last time and think they dig the big city. Plad they and Mike and the Moonpies are both making he trek here this spring.

' data-tf-not-load src=

Would love to see Cody Ikerd and the Sidewinders with them on this tour!

' data-tf-not-load src=

I’m so glad he’s going to do this, because last time I was underage and my parents didn’t allow me to go to his concert, but now I will))) Can’t wait to see this one!!!

If you got chills watching Luke Combs perform with Tracy Chapman at the 2024 Grammy Awards, you’re probably wondering how to get Luke Combs tickets to take in his live show. North Carolina’s country superstar has been driving his fast car all over the U.S. when his current tour started on April 13, and Combs’ Growin’ Up and Gettin’ Old tour runs though August 10 of this year. The tour includes 25 concerts in 13 cities across the United States, with most venues getting a two-night stand. What’s more, there are also a few dates in which he will be joining the Canadian festival lineup of Country Thunder Music Festival in Saskatchewan and Alberta—so there are opportunities aplenty to catch a show. Here’s everything we know about how to get Luke Combs tickets before the end of the Growin’ Up and Gettin’ Old tour.

22 editor-approved deals from rei’s anniversary sale, where to buy tickets to luke combs’ “growin’ up and gettin’ old” tour.

Most of the dates to the Growin’ Up And Gettin’ Old tour are being sold through Ticketmaster and AXS . But if you’re a T-Mobile customer, be sure to also check the T-Mobile Reserved site, which is offering some special deals. But fans have many other options as well—even for some of the shows that are sold out. We’ve put together a list of some of the best options for getting Luke Combs tickets. Bear in mind that most of these are reseller marketplaces, so prices vary and can change at any time. Don’t wait too long, as they’re going fast.

  • Unsurprisingly, Ticketmaster is the main way to get tickets for the Luke Combs tour. Some shows are sold out, but dates that are still available have standard ticket prices starting at $51.50 and going up to just over $250. • You can buy tickets on SeatGeek for every single one of Luke Combs’ shows. Astoundingly, prices start at just $11, but vary wildly.
  • Vivid Seats has listings for every night of the tour, with prices starting around $12 and going up to $681 for a single performance. Want a two-day pass for Santa Clara’s Levi’s Stadium ? It’ll set you back as much as $8,614.
  • StubHub is a well-known ticket reseller that has tickets available for upcoming Luke Combs dates. The site is convenient to use, with warnings about which dates are “selling fast” and even listing how many tickets are left for some shows. For Saturday May 11 in San Antonio, for example, prices range from $41 to almost $5,000 for one ticket, depending on seating.
  • Another reseller you can try is Ticket Network . Ticket prices here vary widely as well, with the May 31 show in Glendale, Arizona ranging from $53 to $829.
  • Like StubHub, reseller TicketLiquidator helpfully displays how many tickets are available for each date. In addition to standard tickets, the site offers some two-day passes for those who want to see both Saturday and Sunday events. Prices for a two-day pass to the Alamodome in San Antonio range from $45 to $993, depending on seating.
  • Finally, ScoreBig is another reseller offering Luke Combs tickets, with seats available for every date as well as two-show passes. Prices start around $60.

When Do Luke Combs Tickets Go On Sale?

Tickets to the Growin’ Up and Gettin’ Old tour have been on sale since August. Consequently, many dates are sold out, as Luke Combs is a high-demand artist. Even so, you can check resellers like StubHub , Ticket Network , and ScoreBig to still find tickets.

How Much Are Luke Combs Tickets?

Luke Combs might be a hot commodity right now, but ticket prices start quite affordably—for shows that have not yet sold out. You can still find seats through Ticketmaster and AXS for as little as $51.50 and prices go up to just over $250.

Of course, your ticket price will vary depending on venue and proximity to the stage. If you use a ticket reseller, be aware that price is based on demand, and can change at any time before purchase. But you can get lucky and find some very good and surprisingly affordable deals. As with any concert purchase, don’t be surprised by extra fees that could be added to your total when you check out.

Luke Combs at American Family Field: Everything to know for Milwaukee stadium tour kickoff

luke combs tour openers philadelphia

Last year, American Family Field hosted the first two shows for one of the biggest tours of the year, with Morgan Wallen.

Now it's doing it again.

This time out, it will be another one of country music's biggest stars, Luke Combs, who will kick off his 25-date blockbuster "Growin' Up and Gettin' Old" 2024 stadium tour at the Milwaukee Brewers' ballpark, for the first two shows April 12 and 13.

Here's everything you need to know for two of the biggest concerts of the year in Milwaukee — including the status of the Brewers' new parking system.

REQUIRED READING: Before Luke Combs plays in front of the 'best fans' for his Milwaukee concerts this week, he tours Miller Brewery and even shotguns a beer

When do the gates open for Luke Combs' American Family Field concerts, and when do they start?

The first opener for Combs' concerts April 12 and 13 will start at 5:45 p.m., with gates opening at 5 p.m. each day. The parking lots will open at 3 p.m. April 12, and 2:30 p.m. April 13, and tailgating will be permitted. Just give yourself plenty of time to drive in, particularly on April 12, when there'll be Friday afternoon commuter traffic as well. Getting through security into the stadium will take some time, too, so plan accordingly.

How much is parking? Is the Brewers' new parking system in operation?

General parking is $25 in advance, or $40 for preferred parking, available at brewers.com/lukecombs . Day-of parking is $35 for general lots, or $50 for preferred lots, but the Brewers won't guarantee that parking will be available.

As for the new QR code-based payment system for parking , it's been temporarily suspended following connectivity issues on the Brewers' opening day . For the April 12-13 concerts, the Brewers will operate with the traditional on-site cashier system.

WHAT TO KNOW: Luke Combs concerts could cause delays on I-94 this weekend. Here's how to avoid traffic

Here's how to get to the concerts if you don't want to drive

Two Milwaukee County Transit System  routes drop people off within walking distance of the ballpark: the CONNECT1 on Wisconsin Avenue and Route 18 on National Avenue. Find the schedule, fare information and more at ridemcts.com .

The taxi pickup and drop off is outside Helfaer Field, while drop-off and pick-up for Uber and Lyft is in the Gantner parking lot. (Expect huge crowds for rideshares after the show.)

Also: Some of the bars and restaurants that send shuttles to Brewers games might be giving rides as well. See the "American Family Field" section of brewers.com .

Are there any tickets available for Luke Combs' concerts at American Family Field? How much are they?

Remaining first-hand tickets for the April 12 show are $109.50 to $229.50, and $80.50 to $229.50 for April 13, available at brewers.com/lukecombs .

LUKE COMBS IN MILWAUKEE: Country superstar introduces heartbreaking new baseball-tinged song at American Family Field

How can I access the pit and seats on the field?

Pit ticket holders must enter the third base gate only to get into the stadium to receive their wristband to get them access. Wristbands are also required for all seating on the field, sections A to P. They'll be available at the Associated Bank gate and wristband tables at the Left Field Guest Services Desk, the UScellular Power Playground in right field and at tables near Section 118.

Combs will have different openers each night — and a special tailgate pre-show April 13

Unlike Wallen — when he became the first artist to play two consecutive nights in a Wisconsin stadium — Combs will treat fans to different openers each night.

April 12 leans more into Combs' alt-country and traditional country tendencies with folk group the Wilder Blue up first, followed by singer-songwriter Charles Wesley Godwin and then outlaw country artist Cody Jinks. The opener slate for April 13 leans a little more country pop, with (in order of appearance) Colby Acuff, Drew Parker, Mitchell Tenpenny and Jordan Davis.

There also will be a "Bootleggers Tailgate Party" at 3 p.m. April 13 with two up-and-comers picked by Combs and Nashville-based up-and-comer concert series Whiskey Jam: Ryan Larkins and Graham Barham. It'll take place at the Third Base Plaza at American Family Field, and will be free to attend for Combs concert ticketholders, with food and drinks available to purchase on site.

CALENDAR: These are all of the arena, amphitheater and stadium concerts in Milwaukee in 2024

Luke Combs setlist: What is he expected to play?

Since these are the first two shows of Combs' tour, we can't wager what the setlist will be. But considering the tour is named after his most recent albums, "Growin' Up" and "Gettin' Old," expect several songs from those. And Combs' biggest hits are also likely, including "Forever After All," "The Kind of Love We Make," and, of course, his breakout cover of the Tracy Chapman classic "Fast Car."

Where can I get more information?

Ticketholders will get more need-to-know information via email a few days before the shows, but more logistical information about American Family Field can be found at brewers.com/ballpark .

Luke Combs rattles stadium at Jacksonville concert, ready to come back and do it again

luke combs tour openers philadelphia

Luke Combs was midway through his Friday night show , standing front and center by himself on stage and playing one of his earliest songs, "This One's For You," just as he has in a thousand bars and clubs on his way to the top.

When he finished, a sly grin briefly crossed his face, signaling that he was as surprised as anyone to find Luke Combs headlining before 45,000 people at EverBank Stadium, and coming back the next night to do it again.

Combs poured his heart out onto the stage for nearly two hours Friday night, walking on stage to a recorded version of "Sweet Caroline" that had the crowd singing along so loud that there must have been noise complaints in San Marco.

Combs, who was playing at the Mavericks nightclub in the old Jacksonville Landing less than eight years ago, was at the top of a bill of country up-and-comers. He had four opening acts on Friday and will be back at the stadium Saturday to do it again, with a whole different cast of openers. It's fair to guess that more than a few fans who were at Friday's show were impressed enough to buy tickets for Saturday.

Saturday night: Have tickets for Luke Combs' concerts in Jacksonville? Here's what you need to know

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

Next week: George Strait, Chris Stapleton in concert at EverBank Stadium. Here's what you should know

Combs isn't a high-energy, tear-around-the-stage performer like Kenny Chesney, who is also headlining stadium tours. And he doesn't have decades worth of hits like George Strait , who brings his tour to the same stadium next week. That's what makes Combs drawing 90,000-plus fans over the weekend so impressive.

Combs became the hottest thing in country thanks to smart songwriting and a band that can absolutely rock and roll. He doesn't have a great voice, but he has a powerful one that had no trouble Friday reaching the folks in the nosebleed seats. If you needed further proof that the new generation of country has arrived, just look at the cover songs he chose to include in Friday night's set. He didn't play Hank Williams or George Jones when he wanted to salute his roots, he went to Brooks and Dunn's '90s hit "Brand New Man," Ed Sheeran's "Dive," Shania Twain's "Who's Bed Have Your Boots Been Under" and Dierks Bentley's "What Was I Thinking."

Combs, a Carolina Panthers fan, wisely wore a Jaguars hat for Friday's show, running through 25 songs and sticking around on stage well after the last number had run its course, shaking hands and signing autographs with fans on the field. He had the crowd on its feet and singing along from the moment he hit the stage to "Must've Never Been Me."

There's certainly a lot more rock in Combs' music than in, say, Strait's. Other than a little banjo or fiddle or pedal steel here and there, his band could easily be backing a heavy metal singer, with the guitar players in particular throwing thunderous riffs at the stadium all night.

Friday night's show was superbly paced, building up the excitement, then giving fans a chance to catch their breath with slow numbers like the tender "Man He Sees in Me" to a sea of waving cell phone lights, then cranking it right back up with big sing-alongs like "Hurricane" or stompers like "Cold as You." The tour has been playing back-to-back nights at stadiums around the country, and fans at Saturday's show can likely expect to see a lot of the same songs performed, just in a different order.

Desperately seeking shade: Where fans can find the coolest spots at EverBank Stadium

Friday's show reached a fever pitch a little after 10 p.m. when the crowd sang along with every word to "Beautiful Crazy," then erupted at the first notes of "Fast Car," the old Tracy Chapman song that helped Combs learn to play guitar. If you could have predicted that song as a big country hit that would get 45,000 people on their feet, you probably ought to be playing the lottery more often.

The way country music develops its young artists, it's likely that one of the openers from Friday or Saturday's show is going to be headlining their own tours in the next year or two.

Who opened for Luke Combs in Jacksonville?

Friday's show opened with Texas five-piece band the Wilder Blue. The band kicked off the evening with a gorgeous National Anthem, then rolled right into its brief set highlighted by a spirited "Dixie Darlin'." Maybe 20 percent of the seats were filled when the band came on.

There was very little time between acts at the show. Wilder Blue walked off and an army of roadies hit the stage immediately. Less than 10 minutes later, the stage was set up for the next act, Hailey Whitters, and the crew was already tuning her guitars. Thirty five minutes after Wilder Blue started its set, Whitters was on stage doing hers.

Whitters, the reigning Academy of Country Music Awards New Female Artist of the Year , was by far the poppiest act on Friday, working the stage in a sundress, boots, long ponytail and what looked like a pretty good sunburn. "I'm freaking out seeing all y'all here," she said as the seats steadily filled. She's a strong songwriter and kept her numbers short and sweet to squeeze in as many as she could in the 26 minutes she was allotted. "Everything She Ain't" and her new single, "I'm in Love," were highlights.

West Virginian Charles Wesley Godwin followed, opening his set with his own "Cue Country Roads" and closing it with John Denver's "Country Roads." He and his band, the Allegheny High, have clearly been playing together for a while, with a real tight delivery and a knack for walking the fine line between rock and country, setting mandolin and banjo against a heavy beat.

Cody Jinks was Friday's final opener and was maybe too big for the role. He and his band, the Tone Deaf Hippies, played for about 45 minutes, but could have gone on much longer and no one would have minded. Jinks, looking menacing dressed in black with dark shades and a ferocious beard, opened with "Fast Hand," which featured a pedal steel solo leading into an organ solo, something you're not likely to find in country music or anywhere else. He has the stage presence of a guy who has played on a million stages and it doesn't matter to him one bit if there are 20 people or 45,000 watching.

The stadium was nearly full by the time Jinks got the crowd singing along to "Mamma's Song." His new single, "Outlaws and Mustangs," has everything it needs to become a big summertime smash. He was halfway through his set before it finally got dark enough for the light show to be noticeable, around the time he was playing "Must Be the Whiskey."

Who's opening for Luke Combs's Saturday show in Jacksonville?

Saturday's show starts at 5:45 p.m. Openers are Colby Acuff, Drew Parker, Mitchell Tenpenny and Jordan Davis.
