Vineyard & Winery

Overlooking the beautiful North Norfolk coast, with its dramatic views, Cobble Hill is a boutique vineyard spread over 3.6 hectares. The three varieties planted at Cobble Hill are Bacchus, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. All with their own unique characteristics they have enable us to produce high quality still and sparkling wines.

With the first vines planted in 2016, 2019 brought the first harvest and a small batch of Bacchus and Pinot Noir were hand-picked to create the award-winning Sparkling Rosé and the Bacchus an award-winning still white wine.

Since then, with assistance from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development, Cobble Hill has been fortunate enough to restore an old barn into an impressive winery. With both modern and traditional features, it is certainly a talking point for visitors.

Fast forward to 2022 and with the expertise of our winemaker Chris Hatto we are producing in the region of 20,000 bottles of still and sparkling wine and feature on the wine lists of some of the best restaurants in North Norfolk!

Are you over 18 years of age?

Burn Valley Vineyard truly is a family project.  Located on our family farm in North Creake, we two sisters work alongside our brother who farms the land surrounding the vineyard.

The idea of growing grapes was born in 2015 after a ‘eureka!’ moment for our father, John Robinson.  We are immensely proud to call Norfolk our home and wanted to capture its essence in a bottle.

We aim to produce simply the best wines which can be enjoyed amongst your own friends and family.

Lovely afternoon touring and learning about the vineyards and tasting the wines with locally produced nibbles. John is an excellent host and passes on technical information easily. A delightful way to celebrate a 60th birthday with a family group and even better being able to cycle through beautiful lanes in the sun to get there .

We had a wonderful day at Chet Valley! We hired the venue for a family party and enjoyed food and wine on the balcony overlooking the beautiful vineyard scenery. We particularly enjoyed the Horatio Rose Brut which was very refreshing on a hot summers day. We had an excellent tour of the vineyard with the owner, John who was very knowledgeable about not only the vines and the wine but also the local area and all things nature related. He was also very good with the children in our party. I’d highly recommend Chet Valley Wine and also Chet Valley as a venue to hire.

Don't be deceived by the sunny photo below! A friend and I joined a Chet Valley vineyard tour earlier this year, and despite pandemic restrictions and a torrential downpour that even included hail at one point, John managed to pull off an engaging and fun event. It would appear nothing can dampen his enthusiasm. 😉 Chet Valley has a surprisingly wide range of wines of good quality. So if you are in or around Norfolk - or want an excuse to be - I highly recommend paying them a visit. (Warning: you will probably want to purchase a few bottles too...)

Norfolk Travel Guide

Six Vineyards in Norfolk You Need to Know About!

Did you know that there are not one, but six vineyards in Norfolk?  The fertile mix of sandy and clay soil, and the gentle climate, make Norfolk one of the UK’s premier wine growing counties, and it’s no surprise that the region is producing some seriously top-quality English wines.

Whether you’re an oenophile, or simply an enthusiastic wine lover (like me), a vineyard tour and tasting is a great way to try something a little different as you explore Norfolk .

Eating, drinking and buying local Norfolk produce is always a great way to get to know the region, and support local businesses at the same time. Be sure to plan a vineyard visit on your next trip to Norfolk !

Flint vineyard.

Right on the Norfolk-Suffolk border, on the gravel and flint slopes of the Waveney Valley is Flint Vineyard , one of Norfolk’s most exciting wine producers.

A family affair, Ben and Hannah Witchell have been making wine at Flint since 2016. Having travelled to some of the most famous wine making places in the world, and then Ben studying Oenology and Viticulture, they decided to start their wine making journey in dry and sunny south Norfolk.

Since then, they’ve won The Independent’s ‘Indy Best Buy English Still Wine 2018’, have included in The Times Top 50 White Wines and won two silver medals in the Decanter World Wine Awards 2021.

Flint Vineyard offer tours on Wednesdays and Saturdays between April and mid September, where you will enjoy a really special experience being guided through the vineyards and winery and learning about wine-making. The tour includes a full tutored tasting of current wines with plenty of time to ask questions as you go.

We highly recommend booking the 15 Mile Lunch with your tour. Lunch goodies include charcuterie, cheeses and artisan bread, all from local farms within a 15 mile radius of Flint.

These tours are extremely popular so make sure to book well in advance here .

Chet Valley Vineyard

Loddon Road, Norwich NR15 1BT

Nestled in the sun-drenched and sheltered Norfolk village of Bergh Apton, Chet Valley Vineyard is another family run establishment. Once a traditional farm, this Waveney Valley vineyard enjoys a unique climate, with higher than average sunshine hours and the lowest rainfall in England. With a sea breeze to keep diseases at bay, the grapes grown here ripen beautifully in these ideal conditions.

Owned by winemaker John Hemmant, the son of a local farmer, and his wife Bridget, the vineyard has been producing award winning artisan English sparkling wines and still English wines, hand crafted using distinct varieties of cool-climate grapes, since 2010.

The varieties grown here are Solaris, Phoenix, Schönburger, Chardonnay, and Seyval Blanc for the whites, grown the reds of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Cabernet Noir, and Regent.

John leads vineyard tours every Wednesday and Saturday from the beginning of April, until harvest time in October. You’ll explore every aspect of the growing and wine-making process, and have the the opportunity to taste the vineyards delicious wines in the tranquil Norfolk countryside.

You can also include a lunch platter to enjoy after your morning vineyard tour or before your afternoon tour. Lunch is served on the balcony of the winery, where you’ll have an amazing view across the vineyard. You can choose from a meat and cheese platter, fish platter or vegetarian/vegan platter, with much of the produce sourced locally.

You must book wine tours and lunch platters in advance – for lunch, this must be at least five days in advance of your chosen date. Bookings can be made online here .

Winbirri Vineyards

Bramerton Road, Surlingham, Norwich NR14 7DE

Located in a lesser known part of the Norfolk Broads and close to the banks of the River Yare, Winbirri Vineyard is owned by grower and winemaker Lee Dyer. Inherited from his father, who in 2007 planted 200 vines as a hobby, Winbirri now covers 33 acres of sandy and flinty Norfolk soil.

Winbirri is well-established in the international scene and produces a fine selection of award winning wines. In 2017 Winbirri’s 2015 Bacchus won The Platinum Decanter award ‘Best in Show’, and their annual Bacchus offering is now a best-seller.

Take a vineyard tour and tasting experience and enjoy a guided tour by Lee himself, and find out about the history of the vineyard and the methods used to care for the vines. The experience finishes with a wine tasting, always the best bit!

To compliment the tasting, book a cheese and charcuterie platter, with goodies chosen specifically to pair well with the wines, which can be enjoyed in the wonderful wine garden, amongst the grape vines.

Humbleyard English Wine

Paddock Farm Shop, Mulbarton NR14 8JT

Humbleyard English Wine is an eight acre vineyard in Mulbarton, just south of the medieval city of Norwich . The vines here were planted by owner Robert Preston, on well draining south facing slopes, between 2010 and 2012.

The vineyard now has nine varieties of grapes, across 10,000 vines, with each variety ripening at different times of the summer and autumn. Amongst the most popular varieties are Bacchus, rapidly becoming a top East Anglia export, and Solaris, which makes a deliciously fruity dry white.

The vineyard is open to the public, with self guided maps available from the farmshop, a ten minute walk from the vineyard, which is open Monday to Saturday from 9am to 5pm. Alongside the full range of Humbleyard wines, you’ll also find a fantastic selection of locally grown fruit and vegetables, apple juice from their orchards and honey from hives kept on the farm. Burn Valley Vineyard

Beacon Hill Road, King’s Lynn NR21 9LN

Nestled on south facing land surrounded by the family farm, Burn Valley Vineyard is run by two sisters, Laura and Samantha, who work alongside their farming brother, Jack. The family moved to North Creake in the stunning North Norfolk countryside in 1989, and have lived there ever since.

The soil is free draining and flinty with a chalk base and the naturally stony ground aids ripening of the grapes and acts as a hot-water bottle, keeping the grapes warm on chilly Norfolk nights! In 2019 a new winery was completed and now all Burn Valley wines are grown, harvested, fermented and bottled on site.

Burn Valley Vineyard hold a variety of events throughout the year. From ‘meet the winemaker’ tastings, to informal steak nights and the popular secret suppers, which include a tasting menu and wine flight, there is something to get your tastebuds tingling.

South Pickenham Estate

Home Farm, South Pickenham, Swaffham PE37 8DZ

The South Pickenham Estate V ineyard covers two hectares and was originally planted by a former owner for private consumption over 25 years ago.

In 2010 the vineyard was turned into a small commercial enterprise, selling up to 3,000 bottles of its own still and sparkling vintage each year, mainly to Norfolk pubs and restaurants.

Of particular note is their 2015 Brut, an English sparkling wine made from Seyval Blanc, Muller Thurgau and Chardonnay – this wine won bronze at the 2019 Decanter World Wines Award. Other varieties of grape grown here include Bacchus and Schonburger.

The grapes from South Pickenham Vineyard are pressed, fermented and bottled at a Suffolk winery. However, you can visit the Swaffham vineyard and enjoy a tour and tasting to learn about the management and production processes involved in wine-making on the estate.

Check dates here and book by calling the Estate Office on 01760 756376.

Humble Yard

Humbleyard English wines are proud to be part of the new and exciting English wine movement.  Following on from the success of English sparkling and still wines at international competition level, we are striving to continue the success with our own Norfolk still and sparkling wines.  As one of a number of Norfolk vineyards it is an exciting time for the East Anglian region, as there have been notable achievements at national and international competition level.

The slopes of our vineyard fall away to the south, and beyond the crest of the vineyard, framed by a line of ancient oaks, lies the valley where the Humbleyard Hundred, the legislative and taxation court, met on a monthly basis during Anglo-Saxon times.

norfolk wine tours

The vineyard is a result of a life-long passion for and interest in wine. Confident that the site we had chosen would be ideal, we decided to embark on the project in 2010 and now have 8 acres of established vines consisting of 9 different grape varieties. The vines were selected for their compatibility with our Norfolk climate and the desire to drink the wine that we like ourselves - crisp White, delicate Rose and high quality Sparkling. Four years on we have some fantastic English wine, grown in Norfolk, to send into the market for all to enjoy. Robert Preston, owner of Humbleyard Vineyard

Rejoice! There's a CBC in the 'burbs! To say we were thrilled to find a Craft Beer Cellar in Norfolk is an understatement. My husband and I are riding the craft beer wave, and to have a place right down the road to grab locally made brews (with the option of buying by the can) to fuel our obsession---well it just made our year. And made our ability to try beer from breweries around New England that much easier. We'll be back again and again and again and again!

Photo of Anthony V.

I've been coming here for years and have spent thousands and thousands of dollars, the owner Andy is a condescending jerk to his patrons, something that I've been very forgiving of because the beer selection is so good. There is a newer employee now, that has taken an already poor customer experience to a new level. I've never been Talk to or treated like this ever in my life. Good luck.

Glad this place came to the area as the liquor stores in Franklin and surrounding towns don't offer much for beer selection. Being able to select individual beers instead of buying a 4 or 6 pick is great.

Photo of Krista L.

Fantastic beer selection but the guy who owns it is a douche.. why are you so miserable when you're surrounded by such great craft beers

Photo of Melissa M.

Just adding to what some other folks have said about the older guy who works here (perhaps owner?)...have called a couple of times to ask if certain beers are in stock. One time he flat out made fun of my request (was asking about a rose' cider for my partner who's gluten free) and another time was just unhelpful. Great beer selection but the attitude of this guy is what keeps me going back to the bigger box stores like Wines and More.

Photo of Rebecca M.

I went here this past Thursday after driving by for months and thinking about going in. I only wish I had gone in sooner! They have an excellent beer selection and really helpful staff. I came in looking for Bell's Oberon, and after helping me locate it, a friendly staff member chatted with me about their sour selection. After that conversation, I ended up walking out with two other items including a Belgian lambic! Their selection for this area is excellent especially if you're someone that is hunting down sours or really hard-to-track down beers. I'll be back!

Photo of Becca D.

Great place amazing selection but crummy attitudes! Everyone understands that there is a five customer minimum, if it's full we have all learned how to wait to our turn. BUT when the store is completely empty you don't have to be rude about letting me and the ONE other person in my party shop together... We both where not sure what we wanted, one of us looked first then we switched out so the other could look and make the purchase but then got even more rudeness/ snarky commentary for fallowing his policy!

Photo of Stephanie L.

I went in here looking for some good craft beers and did find them. If it wasn't for the female employee and I am sorry I do not know her name that was so nice and helpful I would have left. The owner was rude and very unhelpful passing me along to her. When I was ready to cash out the owner took over and made me feel like a disease asking me to step back as if I have no clue how to social distance after a year of dealing with the pandemic. His crass attitude and ignorance would chase any good customer out the door. It is a shame as the store has potential.

Photo of C P.

Was looking forward to grabbing some beer from this place but when I was walking around the guy with white hair and a beard said "you lost bro?" in a pretty condescending manner so I walked right out. Not sure who he thinks he is... thanks for nothing bro!

Photo of Jamie M.

Love having a craft beer store in our area. They always have a great selection, and we always find some sort of fun new beer to try. Prices are fair and we've always found the staff to be friendly and knowledgeable.

Craft beer

This place has a great, hard to find selection of beer. Staff is helpful and best part you can buy by the can or bottle.
