Kullu Manali Travel Guide: Mountains, Snow and Adventure

kullu manali best tourist places

Manali, with its soothing backdrop of the Himalayas, offers a blend of tranquility and adventure that makes it one of northern India's most popular travel destinations. You can do as little or as much as you want there. It’s a magical place bordered by cool pine forest and the raging Beas River, which give it a special energy.

Manali is 580 kilometers (193 miles) north of Delhi, at the northern end of the Kullu Valley in the state of Himachal Pradesh .

Getting There

The nearest main railway station is at Chandigarh, 320 kilometers (198 miles) away in Punjab state, so it’s necessary to travel quite a distance by road to reach Manali.

The Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation and Himachal Tourism both operate buses from Delhi and surrounding locations. The trip from Delhi takes about 15 hours and most buses travel overnight. It’s possible to book a sleeper, so you can actually lie down and rest properly, although many people prefer the semi-sleeper reclining seats in the deluxe Volvo buses. It's also possible to book bus tickets online at redbus.in (foreigners will need to use Amazon Pay, as international cards aren't accepted).

Alternatively, there's an airport in Bhuntar, around two hours from Manali.

This article about how to get to Manali has more information.

The best time for travel to Manali is late March until mid July (before the monsoon rain arrives), and September to October. From October onward, the nights and mornings are cold, and it usually starts snowing in December. The spring (late March to late April), when nature starts coming alive again after the cold winter, is a beautiful time to visit. The crisp clean air, rows of blossoming apple orchards, and masses of butterflies are a real treat. August is apple season, and the orchards around Manali are filled with them.

For ideas of things to do, check out these top 10 places to visit in and around Manali .

Anyone looking for thrilling adventure sports will love Manali. Fishing, whitewater rafting, paragliding, skiing, mountaineering, and hiking are all on offer in or around Manali. You’ll find many companies that organize and run adventure tours. Some reputable ones with high safety standards are Himalayan Journeys , North Face Adventure Tours, and the government operated Directorate of Mountaineering and Allied Sports.

Himalayan Trails in Old Manali offers a wide range of outdoor activities including guided treks. Yak and Himalayan Caravan Adventure is also recommended for trekking and outdoor adventure activities, including day hikes, rock climbing, and rafting. For extra adrenaline, you can also take on the Himalayas by bike!

In addition, many people head off on a road trip to Leh from Manali.

The three-day Dhungri Mela at Hadimba Temple , which takes place in mid-May each year, provides an interesting glimpse of local culture. Gods and goddesses from local villages are dressed up and carried in procession to the temple, and local artists perform traditional folk dances. There’s also a carnival for the kids. Another popular festival is Kullu Dusshera , which falls in October each year. Outdoor trance parties are held in the hills around Old Manali, mostly from May to July, but police interference has put a huge dampener on the party scene and it’s not what it used to be.

Where to Stay

If you feel like splurging, Manali has some wonderful luxury resorts with tranquil mountain settings. Choose from these top luxury resorts in Manali.

Uphill from Manali town, Old Manali has village homes and inexpensive guesthouses, surrounding by apple orchards and snow-covered peaks. Head there if you want to get away from the crowds. These guesthouses and hotels in Old Manali are among the best places to stay.

Nearby Vashist is another option that will appeal to backpackers and budget travelers.

Where to Eat

If you don't necessarily want Indian cuisine, you'll find the most atmospheric restaurants and best food in Old Manali. Cafe 1947 has a refreshing riverside location there and serves yummy Italian dishes.  Il Forno is another place to get outstanding Italian food, and it's set right in the middle of an apple orchard in a traditional ancestral home. You'll get authentic Mediterranean food, with an emphasis on Spanish, at Casa Bella Vista Cafe . Also, The Lazy Dog is renowned for its western food and live music (it also has a branch at Beach Street Resort in north Goa). It's an ideal place to hangout in the evenings. Drifters has new owners and isn't quite what it used to be but still draws a crowd.

For the best coffee and cookies, visit Dylan's Toasted and Roasted Coffee House . It's right near the government school in Old Manali.

Keen to try the local specialty -- Himalayan river trout? Johnson's Cafe serves 10 different preparations of it!

About 20 minutes drive from Manali along Naggar Road, the Fate Plate serves homely food made from ingredients grown on the property. It's set amid a garden by the river, and there's accommodations as well.

Kasol, around three hours away in the Parvarti Valley, is a popular side trip from Manali. It's frequented by hippies and Israeli backpackers, and it's there that you'll find most of the psychedelic trance festivals. It does get crowded from April to July though. Kasol is also home to the remarkable Himalayan Village resort. Another attraction in the area is Manikaran, with its hot springs and enormous riverside Sikh Gurudwara. If there's too much commotion in Kasol for you, make your way to offbeat Kalga village.

Travel Tips

Manali is divided into two parts -- Manali town (New Manali) and Old Manali. The town is a commercial area that caters to the masses of middle-class Indians (both honeymooners and families) who flock there to escape the scorching summer heat. It's noisy and chaotic, and distinctly lacks the charm and village atmosphere of Old Manali. Foreigners and cosmopolitan young Indians usually stay in Old Manali for this reason.

Delicious local fruit wine is available for a few hundred rupees a bottle. It's worth trying!

You'll see marijuana plants growing wildly on the side of the road all around Manali. However, do keep in mind that it is illegal to smoke.

Pin Parvati Valley Trek

Pin Parvati Valley Trek

The Pin Parvati Pass is situated in the beautiful state of Himachal Pradesh. It connects the Parvati Valley in Kullu to the Pin Valley in Spiti. Remarkably, the landscapes on either sides of the pass are in stark contrast to each other. While the Kullu side showcases a lush green and verdant landscape, the Pin side is mostly barren and devoid of vegetation. The two sides are quite different from each other even in terms of culture. While the Kullu side is predominantly Hindu, the Pin side has followers of Buddhism.

The Pin Parvati valley is a popular trekking destination. However, the place is still untouched by the evils of mass tourism and presents a clean and pristine picture to its visitors.  It is believed to be one of the most beautiful places that trekkers can visit while trekking in India.

The trek to the Pin Parvati valley begins at Manikaran, moves along the Parvati River and ends at the Pin Parvati Valley, which has an altitude of 4900 m. The Pin Parvati Valley is also known as the ‘Valley of Gods’ and is located between the Dhauladhar range and the Pir Panjal range.

The journey to this beautiful valley commences at Manali from where the route will take you through lush green alpine forests, lakes, clumps of wild flowers, majestic mountain peaks, etc. On your way to the valley, you will cross the Mantalai Lake, which is a very important Hindu pilgrimage centre. The Pin Parvati peak has an elevation of 5319 metres, which offers a fantastic view of the nearby peaks namely, the Parvati South, the Parvati North, the Pinnacle and Kullu Eiger.

This wonderful journey will end at the sleepy little hamlet of Sagnum. From here you can take a jeep safari into the Spiti valley, where you can explore places of Buddhist importance and also visit some interesting villages before heading back.

This trekking expedition is one of the most interesting experiences of high altitude trekking in India. This trekking trail is often mentioned as one of the toughest trekking trails in India, but it is definitely worth the effort.

However, the lake surrenders its real charm in front of the travelers in autumn. Can be a bit tiring for amateurs as the trek goes through mountains, gorges, forests, and streams.

However, one can completely be sure about the tempting nature of these Himalayan wonders, the path of which leads to a rewarding destination.

The lake is named after a famous Indian sage named Bhrigu, who is believed to have meditated here for around 100 years. Following this belief, the place has achieved a sacred spot in the Hindu religion.

Hidimba Devi Temple

One of the major religious sites in Manali; the Hidimba Devi Temple is built across the lines of ancient cave temple architecture; more precisely a Pagoda style.

This one-of-a-kind cave temple in the valley is dedicated and named after the wife of Bhima (One of the Pandavas), Hidimba. Hindu mythology describes this place as the meditative spot of the wife during her last days.

We mentioned the one-of-a-kind status of the temple. Well, the fact that separates it from the rest is it does not have any form of idol placed inside, but footprints of her engraved in the temple are considered sacred.

Raghunath temple

Ragunath Temple in Kullu

Savoring the divine status of ‘Dev Bhoomi’, Himalayan lands in the north of India has the region of Kullu to show their dominance in this segment.

This nicely cuddled-up valley in Himachal Pradesh has a lot of temples; mostly Hindu, that are the stepping stones toward the state’s rich culture. Start with Raghunath Temple ; the abode of the chief deity of Kullu, Raghunathji.

The temple is believed to be one of the oldest temples in Kullu Manali and has its mythological history talking about Lord Rama making use of the temple idol during his time.

The best time to visit the Raghunath Temple in Kullu is the Dusshera festival , the time in which the locals from the entire valley flock to the celebration. This happens during the time of autumn.

Bijli Mahadev Temple

Another prominent temple in Himachal Pradesh, the Bijli Mahadev Temple in Kullu Valley has a story that turns promising after every two years of the Hindu calendar. It has this legend that Lord Shiva once absorbed all the electric current from the atmosphere in order to save mankind.

Following this, the present world of Kullu believes that a replica of this event happens every two years; wherein the atmosphere turns into the fiercest with its continuous show of thunder and lightning.

Another intriguing fact about it is the breaking of the sacred Shiva lingam kept inside the temple every year the lightning occurs.

Like its legend, the Bijli Mahadev temple holds a fascinating topography also. The temple resides high in the altitudes of Himachal Pradesh with spectacular views of the Parvati and Kullu valley insight.

Manikaran Gurudwara

Talking about Manikaran , it is a nice getaway to the spiritual zones of Himachal. Adjoined to Kasol, this region is believed to be a highly sacred region for the Hindus and Sikhs.

One can find a number of temples of Hindu Gods Rama, Vishnu, Shiva, and Krishna built in the vicinity of Manikaran.

The region accounts for many theories and legends for its religious arc. One of the other things that will catch you a surprise is the hot water spring.

These are actually hot sulfur springs that also sport a religious angle. Owing to this thousands take a dip into the holy waters.

If religion is not in your mind, then also the water from the sulfur springs will benefit you; curative properties for skin diseases.

In whatsoever fashion you might consider it, a dip into these hot pools feels highly relaxing after trekking to the region.

If your trekking appetite asks you to push more then feel free to start one more episode by walking to Pulga, Chandrakhani Pass, and Khirganga.

Wearing off at Vashisht Hot water spring

Vashisht, Manali

The state of Himachal Pradesh is home to a lot of hot water natural springs. One of them is the Vashisht Hot water spring which is a major tourist attraction on the outskirts of Manali.

The hot water springs are scientifically believed to be emerging out from the granitic deposits (sulfur), found in large quantities here.

These springs are also known to have medicinal properties. On a daily basis, the spring attracts around 3000 tourists wherein the locals become the regulars.

The village provides separate bathing spots or Kunds (tanks) for both men and women.

Vashisht hot water spring has its address in a green patch of a hill, right above the perennial Beas River; 6 km away from Manali. The site is also noted for various kinds of temples in its vicinity.

Religious peace at Tibetan Monasteries

Himalayan Namigyam Gompa

Himachal highlands are among the major Tibetan settlements in India. For centuries these people have added to the beauty of the culture; some areas feel completely Tibet of themselves.

In our list of top places to visit in Kullu Manali, we see no problem in putting up a title; not a single entity, but the whole group of Tibetan monasteries that adds to the exotic charm of the region. Our non-Buddhist friends! do not go disappointed, as these spots are open for everyone.

Cherishing a moment of peace, in an ambiance that buzzes with chants and sermons; Tibetan incense sticks further giving an additional spiritual touch, is the basic nature of these monasteries.

Besides, the monasteries are a great exposure to the rich Tibetan culture and architecture. Gadhan Thekchoking Gompa and Himalayan Nyingamapa Gompa are among Manali’s popular religious bets.

Kasol Valley

Himachal’s unprecedented love for foreigners is very much apparent from the Hebrew banners tagged at numerous constructions; cafes, and restaurants in Kasol. The village breathes in western mannerisms and culture. In the skin of foreigners, you will mostly find Israelis here.

Due to their abundance, Kasol in Himachal Pradesh is also famed as the mini Israel of India. The food joints, cafes (Pink Floyd café, Jackie Palace hotel, Mountain Goat Café), and restaurants; mostly run by foreigners serve delectable cuisines (Shakshouka, lemon cake) and leisure experiences of a volleyball game or an indoor carom.

Separate from this foreign influence is the Himalayan charm that is inhabited by the enchanting Parvati River flowing on one side and mountains surrounding the valley on the other.

To enjoy the lush serenity spread across this magical place, walk along the river stretch as it will lead you on an excursion to the nearby villages of Malana, Tosh, and Chalal.

These regions are perfect for those who stay famished for Himalayan psychedelic parties (remember Malana cream?), and most importantly the unclaimed virgin beauty of nature.

Kasol is divided into the Bhuntar side as the old Kasol and Manikaran side as the new Kasol; 37 km from the town of Kullu.

Raison in Himachal Pradesh

Our comprehensive list of best places to visit in Kullu Manali also includes places that are strictly camping sites.

Away from the buzzing town of Manali, lies a spot; amidst green orchards and valleys, where you with your family and friends can camp for an undisturbed vacation.

Doing absolute justice to this is the campsite of Raison, which settles at an altitude of around 1400 meters in the vicinity of the roaring Beas river.

Your options for camping in various parts of India

Its nearness to the river also makes Raison a perfect place for a popular site for river rafting. The flow in the river stays rough and with ample rapids, the water ride here is highly adrenaline pumping.

Rahalla Falls Manali

On the way to Rohtang Pass, 16 km before it, do make a stoppage at the Rahalla Falls , which serves as a picturesque picnic spot. Contrary to the rocky or snowy outlook of the Rohtang, the waterfall sports a lush green topography.

It has a thick covering of deodar forests highlighting the prime spots of its surroundings, and with a cascading milky waterfall; being the end product of melting glaciers at higher altitudes, the sight leaves a stunning impact on its onlookers.

Like a cliched Himachal destination, this place also offers a mix of admiring the beauty and a fantastic experience in the real and remote nature of the state.

Trek to the nearby villages which goes through the lush topography and you will find yourself immersed in the enthralling feelings of an adventurer.

There is also a glacier trek connecting the spot at some distance (Sonapani) and the beautiful peaks of Gaypan. Beas Kund, Manu Temple, and Jagatsukh Temple are prominent nearby spots from Rahalla falls.

"Valley of Gods"

Kullu tourism.

Quietly situated by the Beas River, Kullu is a cluster of beautiful valleys in Himachal , and that's mainly why it's known as the 'Valley of Gods.' Known for the deodar trees, snow-clad mountains, and apple orchards, Kullu is usually coupled with its sister town Manali , hence a favorite among tourists, especially honeymooners.

A hot spot for adventure sports, Kullu is best known for paragliding , river rafting , hiking, and of course, trekking . Some of the most popular treks such as the Bijli Mahadev temple trek , the Parvati valley trek , originate from Kullu. The town is easily accessible as it's home to Bhuntar airport and has bus connectivity within and across towns. Temples adorn the town beautifully with their bhajans and serenity. The Bijli Mahadev, Raghunath , Hanogi Mata , Jagannath Devi , and Gauri Shankar temple s are the most visited places in Kullu. That explains why the town is famous for the Kullu Dussehra festival that's flocked by tourists in the month of October. With scenic views of snow-capped mountains and apple orchids, Kullu lies between Pir Pranjal, Lower Himalayan, and Great Himalayan Ranges and hence the base town to reach Manikaran , Kasol , Malana , and Naggar . The best time to visit this beautiful town is between summer and winter.
