Sunshine Tour: Daniel van Tonder snatches dramatic win on home soil at SA Open Championship

The event was stripped of its DP World Tour status last week after the discovery of the Omicron variant of Covid-19 and the subsequent travel ban on South Africa; Daniel van Tonder claimed a one-shot victory in the Sunshine Tour event.

Daniel van Tonder secured his eighth Sunshine Tour title with a dramatic victory on home soil at the SA Open Championship.

Van Tonder, who registered a maiden DP World Tour title earlier this year at the Kenya Savannah Classic, posted a final-round 65 at Gary Player Country Club to snatch a one-shot win.

The world No 151, without a worldwide top 10 since April going into the week, mixed eight birdies with a lone bogey on the final day to finish on 16 under and a shot ahead of Oliver Bekker.

Van Tonder rolled in a 10-footer at the first and bounced back from a bogey at the fourth to post three birdies in a four-hole stretch from the fifth and a chip-in from off the 10th green.

The 30-year-old picked up another shot at the 11th and fired his tee shot at the par-three 16th to inside six feet to add another birdie, as Bekker birdied his final three holes to sign for a final-round 66 and move alongside Van Tonder on 15 under.

A play-off looked a possibility when Van Tonder - needing a birdie at the par-five last for victory - left himself some 20 feet from the flag with his third shot, only for him to rattle in his putt to take home the trophy.

Henni du Plessis birdied his last three holes to finish four strokes back in third spot, with Dean Burmester jumping into fourth after back-to-back 66s and Christiaan Bezuidenhout ending his title defence in tied-sixth.

What next for DP World Tour?

Events removed due to Covid-19

The event was originally scheduled to be the second of three consecutive co-sanctioned events between the Sunshine Tour and the DP World Tour, only for the tournament to be altered after the discovery of the Omicron Covid-19 variant in the region.

The historic tournament was stripped of its DP World Tour status and offered a significantly reduced prize purse due to the travel ban on the region, resulting in mass withdrawals of non-South African players, with next week's Alfred Dunhill Championship cancelled because of coronavirus.

SA golf champions gather at Waterfall City

Waterfall City Tournament of Champions Sunshine Tour

The Sunshine Tour tees off its new 2024-25 season this week with a new tournament in the Waterfall City Tournament of Champions powered by Attacq, which features a unique format aimed at showcasing a gathering of champions throughout South African golf all chasing a first prize of R1-million.

The 34-player field for this week’s tournament, which will be played at Royal Johannesburg Golf Club’s East Championship Course from 2-5 May with live coverage on SuperSport, has brought together the winners from all corners of South African golf competing over a nine-hole format that they will play twice each day for four days.

Golf fans will be treated to a stadium-like atmosphere around what will serve as both the 9th and 18th greens, giving unrivalled viewing access to a selection of the finest golf talent in the men’s, women’s and amateur game in South Africa. There will also be a separate competition for the leading golfers from the South African Disabled Golf Association (Sadga).

Champions from various sectors of South African golf have qualified to compete in a tournament offering R2.5-million in total prize money, but with a lucrative R1-million up for grabs to the professional winner.

The Sunshine Tour will be represented by all of its available champions from last season and led by Ryan van Velzen, the winner of last season’s Sunshine Tour Order of Merit delivered by The Courier Guy.

Robin Williams, the winner of the Sunshine Tour’s Fortress Rookie of the Year last season, will also tee it up.

The Sunshine Ladies Tour will be represented by a selection of this season’s winners including South Africa’s Cara Gorlei, Casandra Alexander and Gabrielle Venter, as well as India’s Tvesa Malik and Scotland’s Kylie Henry.

The Altron Big Easy Tour, the main feeder tour for the Sunshine Tour, will feature Order of Merit winner Leon Vorster.

And elite South African amateur golf will be represented by Altin van der Merwe, winner of the inaugural Africa Amateur Championship at Leopard Creek in February and who also recently won the Sunshine Tour Qualifying School, as well as top GolfRSA women’s amateur Kesha Louw.

Strydom to end Sunshine Tour season as a Major player

sunshine tour this week

Ockie Strydom started the current Sunshine Tour season as a player looking to make that step up in his career. He ends it at this week’s Tour Championship having done exactly this, with two DP World Tour wins and now Major Championship golf to look forward to as well.

Strydom goes into this week’s Sunshine Tour season-ending Tour Championship at Serengeti Estates as the top-ranked golfer on the Tour’s Luno Order of Merit. He cannot be caught this week so will end the season in first place.

This brings with it Major incentives for Strydom, including a place in The Open at Royal Liverpool as well as the US PGA Championship at Oak Hill, the latter coming via the Federation Ranking on the Official World Golf Ranking.

“I’m into two Majors at the moment, and I’m also hoping to get into the US Open through my ranking on the DP World Tour. So that could be three Majors this year, which would be a first for me. It’s challenging and exciting at the same time,” said Strydom.

“I’m trying not to approach anything differently. It definitely sounds nice to say I’m playing in Majors, and it’s a word that changes the mindset. But I’ll try and approach them as just another golf tournament where I have the opportunity to play against the best players in the world.”

Strydom’s first place on the final Luno Order of Merit will also secure him a spot in the Nedbank Golf Challenge later this year.

So it’s a rewarding week for Strydom, and on a golf course that always brings out the best in his game.

“It’s nice to be back here to finish off the Sunshine Tour season. I always play well on this course. I’m a more experienced golfer this year as well so hopefully it’s another good week for me.”

The field this week includes Casey Jarvis, who should wrap-up the Rookie of the Year award.

Sunshine Tour number ones shining on the DP World Tour

The SDC Championship marks the first of two back-to-back co-sanctioned events with the Sunshine Tour on the DP World Tour schedule in 2023.

The partnership between the two Tours has helped play an integral role in the development of many South African players, including a raft of Major Champions and proven DP World Tour winners.

Ahead of the 2022 DP World Tour season, JC Ritchie became the first player to secure full playing privileges on the DP World Tour by finishing as the leading player, not otherwise exempt, on the Sunshine Tour’s Order of Merit.

Last year, Daniel van Tonder, Tristen Strydom and Wilco Nienaber benefited from a new exemption for the leading three players, not otherwise exempt, from the 2022 Sunshine Tour rankings.

As St Francis Links prepares to host the fifth of six co-sanctioned events between the DP World Tour and the Sunshine Tour, we look at three players who have topped the latter’s Order of Merit and how their careers have progressed.

George Coetzee

Made his DP World Tour debut at the South African Open as a 19-year-old amateur in 2005. After turning professional in 2007, he joined the Sunshine Tour and went on to claim his first professional title in his rookie season at the Vodacom Origins of Golf – Selborne. He secured his DP World Tour card for the 2010 season through the Qualifying School but lost it later that year. After regaining his playing privileges through Qualifying School for the 2011 campaign, he narrowly missed out on a maiden DP World Tour title at the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles as he lost to Thomas Bjørn in a play-off. Three other top-five finishes would help him secure a maiden appearance at the DP World Tour Championship. In 2012, he broke into the top 50 on the Official World Golf Ranking for the first time after a runner-up finish at the SA Open Championship. He claimed his maiden DP World Tour title on home soil at the Joburg Open, coming back from four shots adrift in the final round to win. Two titles in the space of three months in 2015 at the Tshwane Open and the inaugural AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open helped him to win the Sunshine Tour Order of Merit that season. Three years later he won the Tshwane Open for a second time before his first DP World Tour win in mainland Europe came at the 2020 Portugal Masters. Since then, a third-place finish at the Cazoo Open de France last September has been the closest he has come to adding to those wins.

George Coetzee-1458198515

Brandon Stone

The 29-year-old is no stranger to success, with three DP World Tour wins to his name since he graduated from the European Challenge Tour in 2015. His breakthrough success came early in 2016, winning the South African Open on his 27th start on the DP World Tour. He added another later that year, again on home soil, by recording a seven-shot victory at the Alfred Dunhill Championship as he finished top of the Sunshine Tour Order of Merit. His biggest achievement to date remains his victory at the Scottish Open in 2018. A final round of 60 – where he missed a birdie chance on the last to card a 59 – saw him claim his third DP World Tour win and first Rolex Series title. A near three-year absence from the winner’s circle followed before he won his first Challenge Tour title at the Limpopo Challenge in a four-man play-off in 2021. Since losing his full playing privileges on the DP World Tour at the end of the 2022 season, he has registered four top tens on the Challenge Tour this year to sit ninth on the Road to Mallorca Rankings.

Brandon Stone-999561756

Zander Lombard

After turning professional in 2014, he initially struggled to acclimatise to the professional game, making just one cut from 12 events across the European Challenge Tour and DP World Tour in 2015 but far better was to come. He started 2016 with three top tens from four events, earning himself a Major Championship debut at The Open courtesy of finishing second at the Joburg Open as he established himself on Tour. He came close to a breakthrough DP World Tour title at the 2017 Rocco Forte Open but lost out to Alvaro Quiros in a play-off. A joint winner of the DP World Tour’s Qualifying School in 2018, he has since held full playing privileges for the last four years. He again narrowly missed out on his elusive first DP World Tour title at the Ras Al Khaimah Championship last month, finishing one shot behind winner Daniel Gavins in the Middle East. The 28-year-old topped his native Order of Merit in 2019 as he won the Vodacom Origins – Zebula and added three further top fives.
