Terminal Voyage / Star Quest (1994) tells the story of group of astronauts who awaken from their sleep chambers after close to a hundred years only to discover that their captain's unit malfunctioned, killing him. When a number of other accidental deaths occur, the film becomes a murder mystery in space - and even if the solution is almost immediately apparent, an all star cast made this an enjoyable viewing experience.

The multinational make-up of the crew adds the same political intrigue one finds in 2010 and recently The Cloverfield Paradox. With the exception of VR sequences that resemble Star Trek holodeck experiences and a late nod to Alien, this is far more grounded in reality. The Virtual Reality is…

absolutely a fun jam for Corman buffs, but I'd say, know what you're getting yourself into. the pre-Band, reused footage of some superior sci-fi flicks of Corman's past. I enjoyed it, but even for being shorter, it felt a tad unnecessary in a couple aspects. But I love not Star Wars, not starburst's trek, star quest. or yeah, Terminal Voyage.

A lot better than what I expected it to be for sure and the themes of the movie are awesome. It’s a shame that the cramped running time and way too many similarities to Alien cripple the movie in the long run. The last third especially feels half assed in places which is a shame. This could have been a hidden classic ready to be unearthed but in the end, it’s just a wasted opportunity.

Cheap science fiction that would have been kinda charming in the 80s but was looking tatty by 1996.

Roger Corman trots out his Battle Beyond the Stars effects footage one more time, the average cast does the best they can with the material.

There's some fun set design and the VR scenes are funny and a great way to save money.

It's not completely terrible but there's not a whole lot going on here. The cast farts around on inexpensive sets for 88 minutes.

Film #564 of 2021.

SPACE ADVENTURE SPRINGTIME DAILY MARATHON 2024

An international crew of a space ship placed in suspended animation for a long voyage to colonize a new world wake to find their captain dead from a malfunction. Their next discovery is that the folks back on Earth wiped each other out in a nuclear war. So the remaining crew work together, refusing to let mankind die out.

Just kidding, they immediately start squabbling with each other as they die one by one under mysterious circumstances. The whole sudden discovery of a secret android among the crew is grabbed straight out of “Alien” and in this case it was predictable. Another Alien ripoff is the sudden rush to the life pod as the…

As I may have mentioned before, I like watching movies of famous actors/actresses from before they were famous. I tend to do it more often with Star Trek actors, but not this time. Today's movie is Terminal Voyage (aka Star Quest) starring Ming-na Wen. Most of the other actors are recognizable from TV or small movie roles as well.

There isn't really much to the movie, the plot is pretty damn basic. Imagine the movie Alien (1979). Imagine the story of Alien. Now, take out the actual alien. That is pretty much the plot of this movie. Well, there is a twist at the end that is plot twist I have seen a hundred other places, but I won't give it away.

It isn't a bad movie, it you enjoy those low budget, crappy, sci-fi type movies.

Damn, I watched this last night and I already forgot what happened. That can't be good for this movie. The movie was a mess with the plot jumping around aimlessly and characters making irrational decisions. Clearly, they didn't know what to do with the characters while the story progresses.

Okay, I will admit to watching Terminal Voyage/StarQuest only because Lisa Boyle is in the cast. Granted, she's only in it for 30 seconds and is topless the entire time, but my teenage self of 20-plus years ago was nevertheless a little giddy at her appearance.

Without the charms of Ms Boyle, what we're left with is a very familiar, but not altogether bad, science fiction mystery with decent actors doing their best with material that goes completely off the rails in its final 10 minutes, when it both copies Alien and tries to be too clever in its conclusion.

Interesting concept weighed down by “fantasy” VR sequences largely built from stock footage. There’s some great performances and a strong narrative at play but the overall experience falls a smidge flat.

In 2035, global warming rendered the Earth barely inhabitable and its human population is on the verge of extinction. The Earth Federation sends a space ship on a century-long trip to a distant planet Trion which could be suitable for colonization. The eight crew-members come from Russia, United States, China, United Kingdom, France, and Saudi Arabia.

As the ship approaches Trion, the crew wakes from hibernation. They immediately find a decomposed corpse of the Captain in his capsule. The ship's XO, Commander Hollis, assumes command. When he reads a secure transmission from Earth received while they were sleeping, he commits suicide, leaving a note that he "joins his loved ones". The new CO, Lieutenant Jammad, reveals the content of the message: the Earth has been devastated in a nuclear holocaust.

Zinovitz discovers that the ship's systems have been tampered with. A fight for power ensues and Becker, as a representative of the government, relieves Jammad from command. He is soon found dead in a malfunctioned virtual reality simulator. The remaining crew-members suspect that Becker killed the officers and use force to arrest her, discovering in process that she is an android.

When questioned, Becker denies any guilt then sets off the self-destruction sequence. Granier and Han are too devastated to continue and commit suicide with a morphine overdose, and Reese and Zinovitz make it to the escape capsule. As the countdown reaches zero, they find themselves in an underground simulation facility stationed on Earth. There was no space flight – it is their final test, an "extreme stress simulation" scenario which involved the death of the commanding officer and multiple system failures. The crew have only been in hibernation for 6 months, and Hollis, Jammad and Becker apparently knew about the test.

However the nuclear war on Earth was indeed real, and the facility is empty and abandoned. The film ends with a view of a destroyed city, as Reese and Zinovitz look on to uncertain future.

Reception [ ]

In The Sci-Fi Movie Guide writes that the film was competently told, had a good cast, and had a "nice O'Henry ending".

In their lengthy positive review of its 1996 television release, New York Daily News began with the qualification "Were this the average USA Network or Sci-Fi Channel telemovie, I'd say the shelf is where it belongs, and that it ought to ferment for at least another decade. Star Quest, however, is an above-average effort especially if graded on the USA/Sci-Fi curve". They wrote, "because of the cast, and a few nice plot twists and surprises, Star Quest ends up being a good effort in this genre certainly good enough to have been released before now". They concluded "Rick Jacobson has faith in all his actors: Some scenes are photographed in long extended master shots, while others rely totally upon the talents and closeups of single performers. Brilliant? No. Fun? Yes".

Awards and Nominations [ ]

The film received a 1996 Saturn Award nomination for 'Best Genre Video Release' from Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films.

Terminal Voyage is not a very good film. It's a cheap Alien clone without the character, the suspense or, indeed, the Alien. A multi-national mismatched group of pioneers awake from a hundred years in hyper-sleep : their mission is to begin the colonisation of a new world. The Captain didn't survive the journey and, well, the rest is cliche.
