Those Star Wars Homages In Top Gun: Maverick Were No Accident [Exclusive]

Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick

If you live long enough, you start to see the same eyes in different people. Just as the original "Star Wars" trilogy wrapped up in 1983 with "Return of the Jedi," one of the biggest blockbuster movies of the '80s was released three years later. Tony Scott's "Top Gun" infatuated audiences with its dreamlike, sunny portrayal of San Diego and its successful launch of Tom Cruise as the next big movie star. "Top Gun" would gross $357 million at the global box office out of a production budget of $15 million, military recruitment among young men spiked , and the film's original track, "Take My Breath Away," was inescapable.

It's funny how history repeats itself. Today, we find ourselves in another cycle of nostalgic filmmaking. " The Rise of Skywalker " marked the end of a new "Star Wars" trilogy owned by Disney in 2019. Delayed three years because of COVID-19, Joseph Kosinski's legacy sequel, " Top Gun: Maverick " released this summer and became yet another global phenomenon . Once again, audiences have been swept away by fighter jets over Coronado, and Cruise has made it clear that even at age 60, he's not going anywhere.

Despite how different these two franchises are, they feel inherently linked by their cultural relevance, themes of camaraderie, and their focus on aerial battle spectacle, both in the air and in a galaxy far, far away.

This week, /Film's Jack Giroux had the pleasure of speaking with Eddie Hamilton, the editor of "Top Gun: Maverick," who continued to shed some light on what these two cultural juggernauts owe to each other.

A reinvention of the trench run

While most of the cinematic pleasures of "Top Gun" are owed to its "hangout movie" vibes , "Top Gun: Maverick" adds much more drama with a countdown to a crucial mission Pete "Maverick" Mitchell (Tom Cruise) must teach his school of pilots to execute perfectly: destroying a uranium deposit which sits at the very bottom of a canyon. There's a specific maneuver illustrated by Maverick's graphics that will ensure their safety, and any "Star Wars" fan might find that this all sounds similar to a certain trench run scene in "A New Hope."

"We were all joking about the thermal exhaust port right below the main port all the time, I promise you. That joke never got old," Hamilton explained. "But Luke Skywalker doesn't get shot down and gets reunited with Han Solo behind enemy lines, and then they steal a TIE fighter and they have to fight their way out. So, you don't get quite the same experience."

Hamilton is referring to the last act surprise of "Top Gun: Maverick," in which Maverick and Rooster (Miles Teller) crash during the maneuver and find their way back to the carrier together. Indeed, this is one thing that distinguishes the newest "Top Gun" from the fantastical universe of "Star Wars" —  Kosinski's legacy sequel is very interested in the human folly of Maverick in spite of Cruise's seemingly immortal qualities.

Looking to the past for the future

Hamilton went on to recall a memory of working on "Top Gun: Maverick" at Skywalker Sound doing temp mixes. It was there he continued to see the similarities between the film he was editing and the lasting impact of "A New Hope:"

"I met Ben Burtt, who was the sound designer on 'Star Wars.' I said to him, 'I've read these stories of the editors on 'Star Wars' using World War II dogfight footage filmed off a television on 16 millimeter as templates for where the TIE fighters and the X-wings would be moving through the air, so that ILM had an idea of how fast the planes were going to move and stuff.'"

At Skywalker Sound, Burtt provided Hamilton some inspiration by showing him a side-to-side work print and a finished copy of a sequence from "A New Hope." Three months of working on the crash sequence in "Maverick" gave him enormous respect for the original editors of "Star Wars," and how they managed to capture something so timeless with fewer resources:

"That sequence [in 'A New Hope'] is still brilliant today when you watch it, but they did it on film. [...] I had all the new cogs and widgets of an Avid media composer (a modern video editing software) to help me, and the fact that it's all non-linear and incredibly fast and I can find stuff instantly. So I did have enormous respect for what they achieved with that."

A full circle of influence

This year on the red carpet for "Top Gun: Maverick," /Film's Jenna Busch also asked director Joseph Kosinski about the "Star Wars" parallels within the pilot blockbuster. Though it was not something Kosinski considered himself during production, he thinks the connection runs even deeper, "When Jerry [Bruckheimer] made 'Top Gun,' I think 'Star Wars' was definitely an inspiration for them," Kosinski speculates, "it makes sense that DNA would carry into ours."

At some point, Patty Jenkins was set to make a rebel pilot-focused "Star Wars" film with "Rogue Squadron." The project is currently on indefinite hold , but from the announcement reel you can tell where "Top Gun" had made an influence on the tone for Jenkins' project, which she planned to be the "greatest fighter pilot film ever made." It's hard to say if Jenkins' film will ever see the light of day, but in a funny way, the connection between "Top Gun" and "Star Wars" has gone full circle.

Tom Cruise controls Star Wars Episode 7 cameo speculation

Star Wars fans horrified at the prospect of Tom Cruise slipping into an Ewok costume or strapping on a lightsaber can breathe a sigh of relief: the Top Gun star has denied reports he will shoot a cameo role in JJ Abrams' forthcoming Episode VII.

The Sun newspaper fuelled speculation that Cruise was set to join the long-running space opera with a piece reporting a meeting between the actor and Abrams in London at the weekend. A source told its reporter: "Tom has been in London for over a week and met up with JJ and some other people from Star Wars over the weekend. On Saturday evening, five of them met up for dinner and drinks at the Belgravia Hotel. JJ produced M:I5 and loves working with Tom whenever he gets the chance."

Cruise and Abrams also worked together on Mission: Impossible III, Abrams' big screen-directing debut. The US film-maker is currently shooting Episode VII at Pinewood Studios, outside London.

Cruise's spokesperson told Entertainment Tonight Canada there was "no truth" to the rumours and called the Sun article "pure fiction".

Kevin Costner's Horizon Gets Disappointing Box Office Projection Compared to Its Horror Prequel Competition

Aquaman co-star says [spoiler] nearly returned in the lost kingdom, twisters director reveals film was shot during oklahoma's actual tornado season.

Last week, we reported that Harrison Ford will be out for eight weeks after suffering an injury on the Star Wars: Episode VII set. According to British tabloid The Sun , this slight production hiccup has paved the way for a possible cameo appearance by Tom Cruise .

Here's what the unidentified insider had to say.

" Tom [Cruise] has been in London for over a week and met up with J.J. [Abrams] and some other people from Star Wars over the weekend. On Saturday evening five of them met up for dinner and drinks at the Belgravia Hotel. J.J. produced Mission: Impossible 5 and loves working with Tom whenever he gets the chance. Losing Harrison Ford [to a broken leg] is going to set things back a little scheduling wise and there's some time to play around with."

However, ET Canada reached out to a spokesperson for Tom Cruise , who revealed there is "no truth" to the report.

J.J. Abrams made his feature directorial debut with Mission: Impossible III , starring Tom Cruise , and he also served as producer for Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol and the upcoming Mission: Impossible 5 .

Would you like to see Tom Cruise pop up in Star Wars: Episode VII ? Chime in with your thoughts below. If he were to appear in Star Wars: Episode VII , it would mark his third sci-fi movie in a row, following last year's Oblivion and this summer's Edge of Tomorrow .

Tom Cruise. Sith Lord. Star Wars Episode 7. What?

Tom Cruise as the New Trilogy’s villainous Sith Lord? Yeah, this is definitely the weirdest rumor surrounding J. J. Abrams Star Wars Episode 7 production. But what’s even weirder? This might not be too far from the truth.

Tom Cruise has been meeting director J. J. Abrams in London, where Star Wars Episode 7 is currently shooting. A few mighty internet sleuths claim Cruise will score a cameo at the very least, but a few other sites have now revealed that his role could be larger.

I, for one, love the TEETS off of Tom Cruise. I’ll forgive him a few eccentric outbursts, as he is an emotional actor, because his work totally overshadows them. Mission Impossible, War of the Worlds, Edge of Tomorrow, Knight And Day… the guy makes the best modern action movies around. Oh, and he never phones in a performance. Melding hugh Jackman’s intensity with Robert Downey Jr.’s losing-until-the-last-second grace under pressure, Cruise is the perfect action hero.

I’d absolutely love him Star Wars Episode 7. I think he’d be the perfect Han Solo foil for this new generation of heroes. While Solo was the anti-organized freedom fighter, Cruise could portray an older badass Rebellion leader. While Solo was, well, solo, Cruise would be the rabble rousing force that helps train and organize the New Jedi.

Of course, this would mean Luke Skywalker is the shadowy pariah, much like Yoda and Obi-Wan in the Prequels. While the rest of the cast is busy saving the galaxy in the traditional manner, Mark Hamill’s Master Jedi would linger in the shadows, executing an entirely anti-government, entirely humanist doctrine. You know… because if the Clone Wars taught us anything, combining the Jedi within the Republic is a recipe for disaster.

But that was all of a tangent, really. Back to the matter at hand, which is Tom Cruise’s role. Some sites have suggested Cruise could be the overarching villain in the Trilogy. Like The Emperor in the first A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, the New Trilogy will feature a central Sith Lord as the villain, but he won’t be featured in the very first film. According to our sources, the main antagonists in Star Wars Episode 7 are Jedi Hunters. They sprawl the galaxy, desperate to resurrect a new Sith Lord to lead their regime.

That could totally be Tom Cruise!!! I know Thomas is more of a hero than anything else, but he would totally kick ass as a cunning Sith Lord.

Make it so, Abrams! Make it so!

Top Gun Maverick releases first trailer and reminds us of Star Wars

Top Gun Maverick sees Tom Cruise return to his iconic role as Maverick

Some of us are just mavericks.

Tom Cruise returns to his iconic role as pilot Captain Peter "Maverick" Mitchell in Top Gun: Maverick, the sequel to the hit 1986 film Top Gun.

The new film is set 34 years after the previous film and sees pits legendary Captain Peter "Maverick" Mitchell as the new flight instructor of Top Gun, in which he guides Bradley, Goose's son, who seeks to become an aviator similar to his own father.

Bradley is played by acclaimed Whiplash star Miles Teller , while Val Kilmer returns as Commander Thomas "Iceman" Kazansk.

Also look out for turns from Mad Men star Jon Hamm , Jennifer Connelly , and Glen Powell.

The film is directed by Joseph Kosinski who previously helmed sci-fi sequel Tron: Legacy.

However, the exciting new footage does carry some similarities to recent trailers for the sequel trilogy of Star Wars films.

In fact, the trailers for Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker look rather similar.

Aircrafts flying low across the sand definitely gave us vibes from Rey's confrontation in The Rise of Skywalker.

Meanwhile, seeing Maverick in the cockpit so soon afterward also left us having flashbacks to Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) in the cockpit in The Force Awakens.

The Top Gun trailer also included such intense close-ups of hands on the controls of the aircraft that we had major Kylo Ren vibes too.

One shot definitely gave us chills, however, and made us think of the great shot from the trailer for The Force Awakens from when Finn (John Boyega) crash-landed on the surface of Jakku.

Whether these similarities were intentional or not, we are just so excited to see Tom Cruise back as Maverick on the big screen!

Top Gun: Maverick is released in UK cinemas on July 17, 2020.

Are you excited for the return of Top Gun? Let us know in the comments below.

10 Best Tom Cruise Movies, Ranked

Dave bautista & pom klementieff’s new movie perfectly reverses their guardians of the galaxy roles, jason statham's 23-year-old action movie debut proves the biggest unfulfilled potential of his career.

  • Tom Cruise and Warner Bros. enter a partnership that will see them producing and franchising original films together.
  • Bringing Tom Cruise back to Warner Bros. is one of the studio's main goals.
  • Cruise has previously worked with Warner Bros. on films such as Magnolia , Eyes Wide Shut , and Edge of Tomorrow .

Tom Cruise and Warner Bros. will come together to make both original and franchise content. In his decades-long career, Cruise has long maintained his status as an A-list actor. He is known for prominent action roles such as parts in Top Gun and Mission: Impossible , as well as Oscar-nominated roles such as in Jerry Maguire and Magnolia .

Now, Warner Bros. Discovery reports that Cruise and Warner Bros. will work together to develop and produce films together in 2024. Warner Bros. CEOs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy spoke about the partnership, saying that bringing “ Tom Cruise back to Warner Bros. ” is part of their vision, and they “ look forward to bringing more of his genius to life on screen in the years ahead. ” The partnership will involve both producing original films and franchising content. Check out the full statement from De Luca and Adby below:

We are thrilled to be working with Tom, an absolute legend in the film industry. Our vision, from day one, has been to rebuild this iconic studio to the heights of its glory days, and, in fact, when we first sat down with David Zaslav to talk about joining the Warner Bros. Discovery team, he said to us, ‘We are on a mission to bring Warner Bros. back – we have the best resources, storytelling IP, and talent in the business – and we need to bring Tom Cruise back to Warner Bros!’ Today, that becomes a reality and we are one step closer to achieving our ambition. We couldn’t be more excited to welcome Tom back to Warner Bros. and look forward to bringing more of his genius to life on screen in the years ahead.

Cruise added:

I have great respect and admiration for David, Pam, Mike, and the entire team at Warner Bros. Discovery and their commitment to movies, movie fans, and the theatrical experience. I look forward to making great movies together!

Tom Cruise’s History with Warner Bros. (And Where Things Will Go From Here)

While this new partnership will represent their closest relationship yet, Cruise is no stranger to working with Warner Bros. His past filmography with the production company includes Edge of Tomorrow, Rock of Ages, The Last Samurai, Magnolia, Eyes Wide Shut, Interview with the Vampire, Risky Business, and The Outsiders . This filmography arguably includes two of Cruise’s most iconic dramatic roles: his Oscar-nominated Magnolia and Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut .

With a career spanning more than 40 years, Tom Cruise is one of Hollywood's biggest stars. From comedies to action movies, the actor has done it all.

Cruise’s history with Warner Bros. also shows off the actor’s huge range. While Magnolia sees Cruise in a more conventional dramatic role, Edge of Tomorrow sees the actor as a sci-fi action star. This varied history makes the partnership with Warner Bros. all the more exciting, for they could produce a wide range of potential projects.

As for specific details, the announcement from Warner Bros. did not specify what the upcoming projects with Cruise will be. Outside this partnership, Cruise also has an upcoming project in Mission: Impossible 8 , which is set for release in 2025. Between Mission: Impossible and his impending litany of Warner Bros. projects, Cruise will once again be one of the busiest working actors in Hollywood.

RUMOR: Avengers 5 Details Promise A Massive Story With A 60 Character Ensemble

Star trek: who is agent daniels, dexter: original sin needs to feature dexter's first kill.

Tom Cruise is considered one of the greatest movie stars of all time, thanks to his tremendous work as Ethan Hunt in the Mission: Impossible franchise, as well as his iconic roles in Top Gun and Risky Business . However, Cruise has also found success in big-budget sci-fi films, including a couple of them directed by Steven Spielberg.

While characters like Hunt and Maverick are portrayed as invincible men who can't be defeated, the protagonists that Cruise embodies in his sci-fi epics are vulnerable individuals who get caught up in complicated situations, such as going to war against alien forces, getting involved with murder cases, or trying to regain important memories. Cruise also has strong interactions with female characters in terms of working with them to understand the main conflict, which sometimes includes messing around with the conventions of time and space.

Updated May 26, 2022 by Mark Sammut: Tom Cruise is back in the headlines with the release of Top Gun: Maverick, and the sequel has garnered an incredible reception so far. Over the course of his storied career, the actor has tested his skills by diving into a wide range of genres and styles, including science-fiction. This article has been expanded to include more information about Tom Cruise's best sci-fi movies , including where they can be streamed. A section regarding the movie star's upcoming projects has also been added.

Vanilla Sky

This sci-fi picture reunited Cruise with Jerry Maguire director Cameron Crowe, which also combines psychological thriller with romance. Cruise plays David Aames, a publicist with plenty of privilege who appears to have everything: a successful job, a beautiful partner, a nice home, a fast car, etc. However, when a car accident nearly kills David, he (and the audience) tries to solve a complex puzzle that questions what is real and what is fantasy (similar to Christopher Nolan's complex film Memento ).

RELATED: Underrated Sci-Fi Movies From The 1980s & Where To Stream Them

Along with having a heavily disfigured face and needing to wear a mask to help him heal, David also finds himself in a love triangle with two seductive women: his partner Julie (portrayed by a wild Cameron Diaz) and Sofia (played by Penélope Cruz). David also has reflective conversations with a psychologist (played by Kurt Russell), who tries to help David figure out if he murdered anyone after being charged with a murder he doesn't remember nor believe he committed. Like Memento or Inception , this feature is a test for its protagonist to question his sense of reality and to figure out what makes his life happy and enjoyable.

This action-packed sci-fi film features an apocalyptic future in which Cruise portrays Jack Harper, one of the last remaining humans on Earth in 2077 after alien scavengers destroy the Moon and leave the planet in turmoil. Harper uses combat drones to encounter all the scavengers left on Earth, but when he learns that the scavengers are actually humans trying to defeat the alien artificial intelligence threat called Tet (which controls the drones), Harper also discovers that there are clones of him (and several other humans) who are loyal to Tet and become a major threat to humanity.

There are eye-opening images of a broken-down New York (including the New York Public Library in ruins, and the Empire State Building and city bridges left uninhabited and in darkness). As Harper, Cruise's character is reminiscent of Arnold Schwarzenegger's role in Total Recall due to the fact that Harper has dreams based on his past, which involve memories of previous missions he's had as a commander for NASA. Harper's dreams help him remember his true identity and the love he shares with his wife Julia (also a soldier). Along with Cruise's complex role, Morgan Freeman also stars as a rebel leader, and there are high-octane action sequences that include shootouts and chases involving big space aircraft.

War Of The Worlds

Steven Spielberg's adaptation of H.G. Wells' novel is intense and hard-hitting as Cruise plays Ray Ferrier, a dockworker who is divorced and spends time with his children during a weekend gathering at his home. Ray is considered a flawed husband and father, but he is put to the test when blue spaceships with sting rays invade Earth to take out humanity. Ray does everything he can to protect his teenage son Robbie and young daughter Rachel from harm.

RELATED: Things That Early Sci-Fi Got Right About The Modern World

While the effects involving the alien creatures are massive and loud, what makes this sci-fi feature effective is the drama surrounding Ray and his family. Ray proves to his kids that he is capable of providing safety for them, even if that involves bumps along the road (running out of food and water, trying to find shelter to keep warm, etc.). The paranoia surrounding the human characters also provides plenty of drama, especially in a scene where Ray has to fight numerous civilians who intend to steal his minivan or another moment in which a paranoid man (well played by Tim Robbins) believes everyone is going to die. The best action scene occurs when Ray is grabbed by one of the alien tripods but manages to slip a pack of grenades inside, destroying it before the pod can take him away.

Edge Of Tomorrow

The Bourne Identity director Doug Liman crafts a unique spin on time travel in this ingenious sci-fi picture involving William Cage, a U.S. Army Major who is skilled in providing public affairs to an army called the United Defense Force (UDF) in their fight against powerful aliens called "Mimics." However, when Cage is ordered to fight aliens with a squad in France, he fears for his life and ends up dying and repeating the same day over and over again ( a nod to Groundhog Day ).

This is one of Cruise's most vulnerable roles because his character isn't a professional when it comes to combat and fighting in a war. However, by reliving the same day repeatedly, Cage manages to get better at facing the aliens and anticipating their every move. His partnership with Sergeant Rita Vrataski (a tough Emily Blunt) is also engaging because as she helps him become a skillful warrior, Cage provides Rita with information about how to destroy the Mimics. While the film is most intense, there are comedic scenarios in which Rita kills Cage many times whenever he fails and messes up during training, or when Cage constantly meets the same members of a squad and memorizes their actions and personal histories.

Minority Report

Before War of the Worlds , Spielberg and Cruise collaborated for this sci-fi action thriller based on Philip K. Dick's short story of the same name. The story revolves around Chief John Anderton (Cruise), a cop who works for a police program that solves murders and crimes before they occur. When Anderton finds out that he is wrongly accused of murder, he becomes a wanted fugitive.

This is Cruise's best performance in a sci-fi feature because he manages to portray an intelligent but conflicted detective who intends to clear his name, as well as a husband who misses his wife. The scenes in which Anderton and his unit use advanced technology in his "Precrime" police program to track down would-be killers is fascinating because it's all so far ahead of its time, along with flying police cars and vehicles used in elaborate chase sequences when Anderton is a suspect being hunted down by fellow cops. The film effectively combines elements of the noir and chase film in a whodunit thriller with cool tech, along with strong supporting work from Colin Farrell and Max von Sydow (who aren't what they seem).

These sci-fi features are not only filled with action and/or psychological tension, but they also display Tom Cruise's versatility as an actor, portraying characters who go through tremendous obstacles. Audiences will have to wait and see what type of film Cruise will do in space with Elon Musk .

Upcoming Sci-Fi Movies Starring Tom Cruise

Throughout his career, Cruise has periodically dappled in science fiction, but he is not exactly synonymous with the genre. However, that might be set to change as the actor is reportedly working on two sci-fi projects, one of which is particularly ambitious.

SpaceX Project

In 2020, a rumor hit the rounds stating that Tom Cruise will be teaming up with Elon Musk's SpaceX to film a movie in space, specifically the International Space Station. Information regarding this project was scarce for quite a long time, but recent reports state that production is likely to start once the actor completes his work on the upcoming Mission: Impossible sequels.

Doug Liman is attached as the movie's director, and he also shares writing credits with Christopher McQuarrie. Universal Pictures will be handling the production. Nothing about the story has been revealed, so it remains to be seen whether this feature opts for a more grounded or extravagant tone.

Live Die Repeat And Repeat

A sequel to Edge of Tomorrow is in the pipeline, with reports even suggesting that the script is complete. Unfortunately, as exciting of a prospect as this is, the likelihood of it coming to fruition is not that great. Despite most key members showing interest in producing this follow-up, Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt, and Doug Liman have struggled to align their schedules to make it happen. Live Die Repeat and Repeat is also likely to be an expensive undertaking, and while the 2014 release did not bomb at the box office, it was also not a runaway hit.

Glen Powell/Tom Cruise

Glen Powell told some of his best Tom Cruise stories as part of a cover story interview with GQ UK magazine . The two actors became close friends during the production of “Top Gun: Maverick.” Powell originally auditioned for the role of Rooster, but he was beat out by Miles Teller. Cruise liked Powell and offered him the role of Hangman, but Powell had some notes.

“Tom goes ‘oh no, oh no,’ and he starts dropping the helicopter over London,” Powell said. “I was like, ‘Am I about to be the unnamed guy that dies with Tom in a smoking hole in the middle of London?’”

Another memory is when Cruise sent Powell to a theater in Los Angeles to show him a “film school” video that Cruise had put together for his friends.

“Powell expected to be among a crowd – but no, it was just him alone, in an empty theater. For  six hours ,” GQ UK reports. “Watching Tom Cruise speak directly to the camera, breaking down everything he’s learned about filmmaking over the years. According to Powell, Cruise has no intention of putting it out into the public sphere.”

“He said, ‘This is just for my friends’,” Powell said. “[In the video Cruise] is like: ‘Do we all agree that this is what a camera is? This is the difference between a film camera and a digital camera…’ The funniest part is on flying. It was like he put together this entire flight school. So he would literally go, ‘Ok, this is what a plane is. Here’s how things fly. Here’s how air pressure works.’”

Powell is finally becoming one of Hollywood’s go-to leading men. He scored a box office hit last year with Sony’s rom-com “Anyone but You” and is front and center as a co-lead in this summer’s tentpole “Twisters.” It’s been a long time coming for the actor, who told GQ UK he screwed up auditions to play Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Han Solo in the “Star Wars” prequel “Solo.”

“I can joke about it now,” Powell said of his “Solo” casting process. “[But] I blew that final audition.”

Powell is no longer interested in superhero roles, although he did say that Batman would most likely be the only one worth his time.

“I was always a Batman guy,” Powell said. “I would have a wild take on Batman. It definitely would not be like a Matt Reeves tone – it’d probably be closer to [Michael] Keaton.

According to Powell, Hollywood became a lot more favorable on him thanks to the success of actors like Chris Pratt in “Guardians of the Galaxy” and Chris Hemsworth in “Thor.”

“I really do feel like a lot of Hollywood is which actors are in vogue,” Powell said. “What everybody does is end up writing to that thing. All of a sudden, when Robert Pattinson pops off, they’re like, ‘We want a brooding Robert Pattinson type.’ You see it in every script.”

Once Pratt found blockbuster success with “Guardians,” Hollywood became more interested in goofier leading men and not just the brooding, self-serious type.

“These guys can take a punch and sell a joke,” Powell said of Pratt and Hemsworth. “I feel like that’s when I started catching friction on the sidewalk.”
