Planning to visit Siargao? Here’s a detailed Siargao Travel Guide with a sample itinerary, budget, places to visit, where to stay and more. In this post, I will give you a little, first-timer’s advice just like I would for a friend. I also included Hinatuan , the home of the Enchanted River , and Bislig , home to Tinuy-an Falls , in this post just in case you would like a little side trip in Mindanao. So, here we go!

Table of Contents

Surfing in Cloud 9

Siargao three islands, magpupungko rock pools, sugba lagoon and kawhagan island, swim with the stingless jellyfish of bucas grande island, other things to see and do in siargao, how to get to siargao, how to get around siargao, where to book your tours in siargao, budget accommodation, mid-range accommodation, luxury accommodation, where to eat in siargao, siargao travel guide: sample 5d/4n itinerary, siargao travel guide: sample budget breakdown, siargao travel guide: things to know before you go, siargao tourist spots.

Surfing in Cloud 9 has to be the first thing on this list because it’s one of the most memorable things I did in Siargao. Aside from the fact that the island is known as the Surfing Capital of Philippines , its famous surf spot called Cloud 9 is the location of some international surfing competitions. How cool is that?! Although this spot is used mainly by advanced surfers, there is a spot for beginners too.

surfing lessons in Siargao

You can avail a surfing lesson from one of the locals in Cloud 9 or book your surfing lesson online .

For me, island hopping in Siargao is the next best thing. Having been to all the major islands in Siargao, I admit that I have my own personal favorites. However, the islands are diverse, has its own unique offerings, and one is certainly not “better” than another. In Siargao, the three famous islands included in all island-hopping tours are Naked Island , Daku Island and Guyam Island .

aerial shot of Naked Island in Siargao

Naked Island

Naked Island (a white sandbar with no shade at all) is my least favourite. Not because it is not beautiful but because it is so exposed you would definitely get sunburned! It is also not ideal for swimming because the current here is too strong. Nevertheless, it is a great place for picture taking and sunbathing.

dog at Daku Island

Daku Island

Daku Island is my absolute favourite in Siargao . This island dazzles with glittering turquoise waters, wide white sand beach and swaying coconut fringes. It can handle a lot of people in comparison with Naked Island and Guyam Island, so it never feels too crowded. Aside from swimming and beach bumming, Daku is a great place for surfing too!

aerial shot of Guyam Island in Siargao

Guyam Island

Guyam Island is my second favourite island in Siargao, next to Daku Island. It is great for swimming, sunbathing, enjoying non-alcoholic and alcoholic drinks at the beach bar, and the best beach to watch the sunset.

aerial shot of Corregidor Island in Siargao

Corregidor Island

Siargao’s got a Corregidor Island too! This island, located an hour and a half boat ride from General Luna, offers breathtaking views of nearby islands. It also features powdery white sand and palm-fringed beaches and crystal clear turquoise waters. One thing I did not like about the island is you cannot really walk around the beach because it is owned by different resorts. You have to pay a separate entrance fee to get into another. Nonetheless, I enjoyed my visit and would definitely return for a second time!

In Magpupungko , you’ll not only see spectacular rock formations but also inviting tidal pools everywhere! I first saw pictures of Magpupungko in Instagram and I told myself that I would see it one day. When I finally did, it took my breath away! Seriously, I was blown away by its clear waters with different shades of blue. Before I knew it, I was already cliff diving and swimming to my heart’s content. Magpupungko will always be a non-negotiable in Siargao. Going here is an absolute must!

Magpupungko Tidal Pools in Siargao

Another must visit in Siargao is Sugba Lagoon. Located in the second biggest mangrove system in the Philippines, this mystical lagoon offers various types of activities for all kinds of travellers. The star attraction is the bluest lagoon I have ever seen with a wooden diving board in the middle. This is where you can jump all you want or just stand at the board for some picture taking.

If you get in to Sugba Lagoon early enough, the board and the lagoon will be all yours. But expect a queue for the diving board because this place is one of Siargao’s most popular destination.

island tours siargao

Let’s not forget about Kawhagan Island . Some tour operators offer this as a side trip to Sugba Lagoon. This small island paradise located in Del Carmen is famous for its crystal clear turquoise waters, lush palm trees, and beautiful white sandbar on one end. You will surely fall in love when you see it. Trust me.

island tours siargao

Hidden within Sohoton National Park in Bucas Grande Island lies a small lagoon, home to rare species of stingless jellyfish. Touching them and seeing them up close were magical. It was definitely one of the most memorable experiences I had in Siargao (well not really in Siargao but Surigao del Norte). Aside from the Jellyfish Sanctuary, there are other great attractions in this island like the Hagukan Cave , Magkukuob Cave (with a 5-moter cliff jump board), Titikan Lake , and the instagrammable Club Tara Resort .

stingless jellyfish

  • See the sunrise or sunset at the Coconut “Top of the Road”, Burgos Coconut Road and Maasin River (Bent Coconut tree) – you guys probably know what these places look like because they’re all over Instagram!
  • Follow the dirt road to the Secret Beach – also known as Guiwan Beach, this beach doesn’t receive too much attention compared to other beaches Siargao.
  • Party in General Luna – The party scene in Siargao isn’t as loud and wild as Puerto Galera or Boracay. You can basically party every night in the island but there is an assigned resort to host the “official” party each night. For example, Acoustic Night at Buddha’s Surf Resort is scheduled on Thursdays while Art Night is scheduled at Viento del Mar on Tuesdays. Make sure to ask your receptionist to know where the party at.
  • Relax and destress by joining a yoga class – There are many resorts all around Siargao offering both single session and multi-day yoga sessions. If you need ta space to soothe your mind and release the tension in your body, then Siargao is a great place to do it! Kermit Siargao offers 1 session (1 hour and 30 minutes) for only 400 pesos while 3 sessions cost 900 pesos.
  • Descend thru Tayangban Cave Pools – Located near the Siargao Circumferential Road, this cave/cenote is one of Siargao’s best attractions. It can get a little scary to get there because of bats and total darkness, but it will be worth it. The best time to visit is the middle of the day when sunlight beams straight down and gives an almost heavenly reflection to the turquoise waters below.

Flights from Manila, Clark or Cebu to Siargao can be found for as little as 1,800 pesos ($40 USD), one way. Make sure to catch those seat sales from Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines to get super low fares for your travels. Another alternative route in going to Siargao is via Butuan. My friends and I did this on our recent trip, which allowed us to make a side trip to Hinatuan and Bislig.

*Our Manila to Butuan and Siargao to Manila tickets were purchased for only 1,440.20 during Cebu Pacific’s piso sale.

island tours siargao

Transportation around Siargao is relatively cheap. You can ride a habal-habal (shared motorcycle) and tricycle around General Luna for around 10-20 pesos (less than $1 USD). Scooters are quintessential to the Siargao experience, and it’s not uncommon to see travellers riding one around the island. Scooter rentals are available for rent in General Luna for as little as 350 pesos per 24 hours exclusive of gasoline ($7 USD). You should be an experienced motorcycle driver for this option though.

There are many tour operators offering island-hopping and land tours in the island. Siargao Tri-Island Tour takes you to three tropical islands –  Naked Island ,  Daku Island  and  Guyam Island . You can also find one that offers island-island hopping tour that includes Corregidor Island along with the three islands! My friends and I did this tour and fell in love with it!

Another tour you can book is the Siargao Land Tour , which is great way to explore the beauty and culture of Siargao beyond the beach. This tour takes you to Coconut Road, Sugba Lagoon, Magpupungko Rock Pools, and Maasin River.

Where to stay in Siargao

  • Lampara Siargao Boutique Hostel – for only 1,000 pesos per night, you can get a dorm-style accommodation with FREE breakfast in this hostel.
  • Mad Monkey Hostel Siargao – a popular choice for backpackers and budget travelers looking for a fun and social atmosphere. They offer both dormitory-style and private rooms, as well as a variety of activities such as surfing lessons, island hopping tours, and live music events.
  • Himaya Siargao – offers budget-friendly villas and private pool. The resort is surrounded by lush greenery and is just a short walk away from the beach, making it a great choice for couples or families looking for a peaceful and comfortable stay.
  • Bulan Villas – a boutique resort conveniently located in General Luna, which features a perfect combination of value-for-money and comfort. Despite being located on the main “Tourism Road, the resort offers a tranquil respite away from the crowds of General Luna.  *Temporarily Closed for Renovations

tropical villa in Siargao

  • Romantic Beach Villas Siargao Island – True to its name, this resort offers intimate beachfront villas that provide a serene and peaceful getaway. With its beautiful setting, charming decor, and excellent service, it’s an ideal spot for couples and families seeking a romantic retreat in Siargao.
  • The Hillside Resort Siargao – Located in the lush hills overlooking the green meadows, Hillside Resort Siargao is a perfect place to disconnect and enjoy the natural beauty of the island. The infinity pool is a highlight and the spacious rooms and villas are beautifully designed.

  • Las Palmas Villas and Casitas Siargao – Conveniently located at the Tourism Road of General Luna, Las Palmas offers luxurious and spacious villas that blend modern amenities with traditional Filipino design. I loved the open-air living space, swimming pool and their in-house restaurant, which offers wide array of International and Filipino dishes.

Siargao has lots of restaurants offering different types of cuisine. A basic local meal in General Luna (Tourism Road or Boulevard) will cost around 100 pesos. Restaurant /cafe food is a little expensive but is still reasonable at around 200-300 pesos. Here are my favorite restaurants in Siargao in no particular order:

  • Bravo Restaurant – This Mediterranean-inspired restaurant is a must-visit for its fresh seafood and flavorful dishes. I particularly loved their paella marinera, tapas and salad.
  • CEV: Ceviche & Kinilaw Shack – As a lover of ceviche, I couldn’t resist checking out this spot. Their Pacifico Ceviche and Santa Monica Ceviche were all freshly made, delicious and packed with flavor.
  • BLISS Restaurant – This laid-back restaurant has  a menu that focuses on fresh and locally sourced ingredients. I especially enjoyed their Eggs Benedict, Shakshuka and Risotto Ai Fungi.
  • Kermit Siargao – This Italian-inspired restaurant is famous for their wood-fired pizzas and homemade pastas. Their outdoor seating area is also a great spot to hang out and relax. I highly recommend their Tagliatelle alla Tartufata and Bruschetta Italiana.
  • Mad Monkey Kitchen – This restaurant is located inside the popular Mad Monkey hostel, and is known for its fun and relaxed vibe. Their menu includes a variety of international dishes, and their pizza was particularly delicious.
  • Kalinaw Resort Restaurant – For travelers seeking a more upscale dining experience, Kalinaw Resort’s restaurant is a great choice. Their menu features a fusion of local and international cuisine, and their cocktails were expertly crafted.
  • Mama’s Grill – This barbecue place serves up some of the best grilled seafood and meat on the island. The portions were always generous, and the prices were reasonable. This is actually my favorite among all the restaurants I’ve tried in Siargao.
  • Zicatela Siargao – This Mexican restaurant, cafe and cocktail lounge is a great spot to grab a drink and enjoy the sunset. Aside from their signature cocktails, their all-day breakfast offerings like Beef Birria and Burritos are the bomb.
  • Shaka Cafe Siargao – For healthy and delicious meals, Shaka Siargao is a must-visit. Their smoothie bowls (Bakunawa is my all-time-favorite), salads, and wraps were all fresh and flavorful.
  • Boulevard Eateries – There are many eateries at the boulevard offering cheap grilled seafood and booze (cheapest in all of General Luna). This is where my friends and I would usually go at night to have barbecue and beer.

sunset in Siargao

  • Siargao is an incredibly safe place to travel, even for solo travellers (and even as a solo female traveler). You’ll be surprised by the number of foreign travellers who decided to make Siargao their home.
  • When renting a scooter, always observe proper driving precautions. Wear a helmet. The most important piece of advice I can suggest is to purchase a travel insurance. You will never know when you will need it.
  • Wear aqua shoes when going to the beach. You don’t want to get infection from cuts and scrapes on reefs.
  • Eat at a local carinderia or cook your own food. You can stock up your food supplies from the market or nearby grocery store.
  • Save money on alcohol by buying your drinks at a local store instead of the bar. You can also drink like a local at one of the local carinderias located at the boulevard. Pulutan and booze are cheap there!
  • Bring a water bottle.

So, that’s about it my dear readers! I hope this Siargao Travel Guide will prove useful! Feel free to leave a comment below if you have questions, suggestions or stories you want to share about Siargao!

A Siargao Island Hopping tour is by far the most popular thing to do on the island. So here’s a go to guide including where to book and what to expect.

Table of Contents

How To Book Your Siargao Island Hopping Tour

There are two ways to book a Siargao island hopping tour:

Through your accommodation

This is the safest and most secure option.

They will likely charge you up to 3500 Pesos per boat.

You get the reassurance of it being dealt with properly and have someone to turn back to if anything goes wrong.

Barter with the locals

Head down to where the boats leave (opposite Curry Pot) and negotiate with the local catamaran owners.

It’s advised to head down the day before you plan to go on your Siargao island hopping tour, in order to lock in your driver and confirm a time to meet.

For those short on time, or that prefer everything to be organised for them, there are some awesome tours on Get Your Guide available to book in advance.

Best Time To Visit Siargao

The best time to visit Siargao is between March and October, the island’s dry season.

As for heading out on your Siargao Island hopping tour, it’s probably the most popular thing to do there. So definitely head out as early as possible in order to beat the crowds!

Before heading out on your Siargao Island hopping tour, make sure to stack up on some snacks from the mainland.

Even if lunch is included, it could be a long day if you get hungry. And there aren’t too many shacks selling food on the smaller islands.

What To Expect On A Siargao Island Hopping Tour

A Siargao island hopping tour is exactly the type of trip you imagine when plan planning your Philippines itinerary .

A full day of floating around tropical paradise, crystal blue waters and sipping coconuts on secluded beaches.

Depending on how much you pay for your trip, determines whether lunch is included. So if you’re on a budget grabbing something local to take with you and plenty of water is a good plan!

The standard trip consists of visiting three of the surrounding Siargao islands – Naked Island, Daku Island and Guyam Island. Typically in that order.

Naked Island

Not a nudist beach, but a small island where you will find nothing but sand. Therefore the island is naked!

It’s a stretch of land around 100 metres long and it’s ideal for just kicking back and having a reality check of just exactly where you are in the world!

Naked Island Siargao Island Hopping Tour

Daku Island

The largest of the three islands and a bit more space for exploring.

There are beach hunts available to relax in and a few pop up style island 7/11’s (that’s a joke – there will literally be a local with some cold drinks and crackers to buy).

However Daku is usually the lunch stop, so kick back and enjoy or explore through the palms.

Daku Island Siargao Island Hopping Tour

Guyam Island

The final spot of the day and another tiny paradise. Guyam for us was the prettiest, and surrounded by beautiful shallow turquoise waters.

A great place to hang out until sunset if you can last that long and take beautiful photos amongst the scenery.

All in all, our Siargao Island Hopping Tour was one of the best days of our 2 months in the Philippines. If you make it all the way out East, then this has to be on your Siargao itinerary !

Definitely one of the best things to do in the Philippines .

With its swells that make the surfers’ adrenaline pumping and feet itching, Siargao has been luring both local and international wave riders to its rolling shores. No wonder that this teardrop-shaped island is widely regarded as “the Surfing Capital of the Philippines”.

The island had been under-the-radar and is only known to surfers until the early 2010s. But today, Siargao enjoys being the “rockstar” tourist destination in the country. It is also more accessible now more than ever, welcoming about 12 flights daily from Manila, Cebu, and Clark. The road from the airport to other parts of the island has also been developed from the bumpy rough road to smooth concrete ones, making traveling around the island more convenient and efficient.

Other than surfing, the island boasts other attractions like coconut-lined roads and rivers, pristine beaches, caves, lagoons, and food! Here are some of the things you can see and do while on the island.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

Three-Island Tour

The three-island tour covers Guyam, Naked, and Daku Islands. Each has its unique feature, so the experience won’t seem redundant. Take this tour and see for yourself what these islands have to offer.

You can charter a private boat or join a group tour .

  • By private boat. Head to the wharf and charter a private boat for P1500 – P2000. This is a great option for groups because the rate is per boat, so you can split the cost. However, this does not include lunch and the additional entrance and docking fees. More info about the islands and corresponding fees below.
  • By group tour. If you’re traveling alone, you don’t want to deal with finding a boat or preparing food, or you simply want to make friends, we recommend joining a group tour instead. Klook offers this tour. The price covers the boat fees, all the entrance fees, and a boodle-style lunch buffet.

island tours siargao

Naked Island

island tours siargao

Naked Island is a sandbar that is the usual stop on the way back to the main island. Because there isn’t much here, not even trees, the activities are limited. But you can always take lots of photos.

Daku Island

island tours siargao

Daku Island is the largest of the three islands and is a whole barangay in itself. It is primarily a fishing village with cottages lined up along the coast. There are also private properties along the beach.

This is a common lunch stop. If you rented a boat, lunch is not covered. But fresh fish and other seafood are available and you can have the locals cook for you. But if you’re on a tight budget you can always bring your own food.

If you’re on a group tour, lunch is usually served as part of the package. You also don’t need to worry about the other fees because these are part of what you paid for.

Entrance fee: P100 per boat Cottage rental: P250

Guyam Island

island tours siargao

Guyam Island is a small, circular island, usually your first stop for the three-island tour. It has two distinct sides: one side is rocky with strong currents, while the sandy side is more serene. Smiling ladies with a small box will greet you and cheerfully let you know there’s a fee once you set foot on the island. If you’re not sure what island you’re in, the large letters spelling GUYAM might be a nice indicator.

Entrance fee: P30 per person. Cottage rental: P300 (If you’re on a group tour, this is already included in the package.)

Siargao Land Tour

You can explore the main island and see the wonders it keeps in its jagged corners and lush landscapes. Here are the usual stops of the land tour (not in order):

Magpupungko Rock Pools

Coconut mountain view, maasin river.

There are many ways to do this. You can rent a car or motorbike. But the most convenient is to join a group tour. Most group tours also include a stop at Sugba Lagoon, which is located on another island so a boat transfer is added.

island tours siargao

Another well-known tourist destination on the island of Siargao is the Magpupungko Rock Pools, which affords revelers the chance to take a dip in the crystal clear waters when you get there at the right time. The rock pools only appear at certain times, particularly when the tide is low. The location is a 45-minute drive from General Luna. Explore the Magpupungko Beach if you want to feel some sand beneath your feet or do cliff-jumping but be extra careful because the rocks are sharp; it would be better to wear protective footwear or aqua shoes.

Note: Always check the tide schedule as it changes daily. See it here: Port Pilar Tides

Entrance Fee: P50 Parking Fee: P20

How to Get There: You can join a group tour, hire a habal-habal or rent a motorcycle and drive to Pilar. You will pass by local eateries before you reach the beach and rock pools. The drive will take you about 45 minutes from General Luna.

Maasin River is a 30-minute drive from General Luna. You’ve probably seen photos of the bent coconut tree sticking out over the river. There’s a rope attached to the tree where you can swing back and forth from and, maybe, let go and plunge into the river. The water is about 6-foot deep.

Heading to the northern portion of the island, you will arrive at a very conspicuous red bridge. That’s your landmark for the bent coconut tree.

Location: Siargao Circumferential Rd, Dapa, Surigao del Norte Entrance Fee: P20

Make a short stop on the side of the road to appreciate the lush coco paradise that seems endless as it sprawls across the island!

Sugba Lagoon

island tours siargao

Another popular attraction on the island is Sugba Lagoon. It is located on the northwestern portion of the island. The jumping-off point is the town of Del Carmen, which is about a two-hour drive from General Luna. There are many ways you can explore the lagoon — by renting canoes, bamboo rafts, and paddleboards and by snorkeling. There’s a two-layer docking area or rest area where you can also rent a table for P50. One of the highlights here is jumping off the diving platform into the clear turquoise (sometimes emerald) waters.

How to Get There:

  • Join a group tour. Tour operators and some resorts offer this tour. The rate is around P2000 per person inclusive of lunch, transportation, and entrance.
  • Habal-habal: P500 RT + P30 (parking fee at Del Carmen pier)
  • Van Rental: P3000/day (good for 12 pax)
  • Motorcycle Rental: P350 – P500/day + gas
  • From Del Carmen port, register at the local port authority and charter a boat or wait for other passengers to fill up the boat. The normal boat rate is P1600 for six people. The travel time from the port to the lagoon is approximately one hour.

Sohoton Cove (Bucas Grande Islands)

Image from Gotmarked Tours via Klook

Located in the town of Soccoro in Surigao del Norte, Bucas Grande is a separate group of islands from Siargao. Getting there is quite expensive, but all those islets, lagoons, beaches, caves, and karst cliffs make up for it. And should you visit at the right season, you will be able to encounter the stingless jellyfish at Sohoton Cove.

Getting There: From Siargao, the jumping-off point to Bucas Grande Islands is Dapa port. Join a group tour or charter your own boat to Bucas Grande.

Boat Tour Rates: P3000 – P3500 (Sohoton Cove Tour Only, good for 5 pax); P4000 (Sohoton + Three-Island Tour, good for 5 pax)

Other Fees: P500 (smaller boat to Sohoton Cove) P50 (entrance fee); P50 (environmental fee); P350 (tour guide); P100 (docking fee per boat)

Note: Jellyfish season starts in March, but you will witness the highest concentration of jellyfish during the months of July and August.

Some tour operators combine Sohoton Cove with the 3 Islands Tour! If you’re solo or you don’t want to plan anything, you can join a group tour instead! A Sohoton + 3 Islands Combo Tour is available on Klook!

You’ve come to one of the best surfing spots not only in the Philippines but also in the world, so why not? If you don’t know how to ride the waves, there are numerous surf lessons offered at the surf break sites. Also, the good thing about Siargao is that it covers all degrees of expertise, so whether you are a newbie or an expert, there’s a surf break that is right for you. Beginner’s surfing lesson starts at P1000 for two hours.

The waves are perfect for surfing all year round, but the best time is from as early as July to as late as January. The waves can become gnarly from September to November. Please be extra careful especially if you are just new to surfing.

Here is the list of Siargao’s surf breaks:

Note: The annual ‘Cloud 9 Surfing Cup’ usually happens in late September or early October, so expect huge crowds during this time. The competition is officially recognized by the World Surf League Pro.

Cloud 9 Boardwalk and View Deck

island tours siargao

Cloud 9 is one of the popular surf breaks in General Luna, but if you are not that into balancing yourself on a surfboard and be wiped out several times, you can just relax and chill strolling down the iconic long boardwalk. You can also watch the seasoned surfers dance with the roaring waves from the three-story view deck at the end of the boardwalk. You can also wait for the sunrise here as surfers catch the early morning swells and/or savor the moment as you think of nothing else but the beautiful spectacle that is sunset.

Burgos Coconut Road

island tours siargao

Siargao is blanketed in thick coconut forests. Some roads cut across this coco paradise, which creates a scenic view. That particular shot of a strip flanked by coconut trees is a strong contender for the title of most photographed (or “Instagrammable”) spot in Siargao.

island tours siargao

The town of General Luna has the most number of commercial establishments on the island — resorts, restaurants, cafés, and bars. The food place selection ranges from simple eateries or carinderias to international restaurants. The food choices cater to both locals and foreign visitors. Some of the most favored restaurants are Harana Surf Resort & Restaurant, Kermit Surf Resort & Restaurant, Buddha’s Surf Resort, Mama’s Grill, Shaka Siargao, and Aventino’s Pizzeria.

When the sun goes down, the nightlife starts to kick in. And it’s very much alive on the island! If you still have the energy for dancing, socializing, and drinking with other travelers, parties usually happen at Jungle Disco, Viento, Bravo, and RumBar. If you like beers, you might want to try Siargao’s very own draft beer — General Luna Pale Ale. I had a chance to try it while dining at Harana.

Motorcycle or Bicycle Around the Island

island tours siargao

There are many ways you can get around the island of Siargao — van, tricycle, habal-habal , motorcycle, and bicycle. Siargao is a motorcycle- and bicycle-friendly island. Renting a motorcycle or a bicycle for a day or more is a popular transportation option among tourists. The Siargao Circumferential Road will treat you to a very picturesque drive, leading you to different tourist sites on the island. Even before reaching your destination, the ride itself is already an attraction.

However, always prioritize safety! Make sure you have a license and wear a helmet even if no one else is doing it.

Don’t Forget to Travel Responsibly

The booming tourism industry has a positive effect on the economy and livelihood of the people by opening business and job opportunities, but it also has a negative impact.

A large part of Siargao, despite the many developments happening in some areas, is still undisturbed and unspoiled. For the touristy towns of General Luna, Del Carmen, and Soccoro, measures are being taken to lessen the impact of rising tourism-related activities on the island. Some of the businesses are taking the initiative to do their part in preserving the environment like using metal straws instead of plastic ones. Airline companies are making an effort too like Cebu Pacific’s initiative, the Juan Effect sustainable tourism campaign, encouraging everyJuan to do his or her part no matter how small that act is.

Besides helping the local economy by purchasing things and availing of services, you can also help to preserve the natural resources of the destination for the future generation. By simply bringing your own refillable water bottles, eco-bags, and throwing your trash properly, you are already making a huge difference.

Hey great post and very informative. This Island truly is a hidden paradise. I enjoyed it more then El Nido ,Palawan. The locals are super nice and friendly.

You forgot to add the Siargao wake park, it was so much fun! There is also the Siargao Blue resort lounge, great music and drinks. There are lots of hidden beach areas, go out there and explore!

Siargao – The Ultimate Guide with 9 best things to do

  • Published on June 12, 2020
  • Last updated on November 13, 2023

Siargao Alegria Beach Couple

Siargao is our favorite island in the whole Philippines. In this ultimate guide, we share with you why we loved this island so much and the best things you can do in Siargao, including the best beaches, where to stay and eat, and top boat trips to go on.

This Island makes you feel like you are in another time. It’s full of palm tree forest, and while we followed the only road on the island, which leads you all around it, and crossed all those coconut palm trees, it somehow reminded us of Jurassic Park. Siargao is not touristy like other islands of the Philippines; it’s a true paradise mainly visited by backpackers. Besides, it’s very famous for its fantastic breaks, so it attracts many surfers.

Best time to visit the Philippines

The best time to visit the Philippines is between November and April because these are the dryer and cooler months. The wet season lasts from May until October and brings a lot of rain and hotter temperatures. However, the tropical weather in the Philippines is very unpredictable all year round.

We visited Siargao in February, and it rained sometimes. But the rain usually lasted only a few hours. Be prepared that the weather can change very quickly. It can be the most beautiful sunny day, and an hour later, it rains heavily. Another hour later, it may be perfectly sunny again.

How to get to Siargao

You can get to Siargao either by ferry or by airplane. The ferry port of Siargao is called Dapa and is located in the southern part of the Island close to General Luna. If you are not staying in this area, you can take a Tricycle to get to your accommodation.

The tiny airport of Siargao has only two gates and is located on the west coast, close to Del Carmen.

Visa to enter the Philippines

Most nationalities can enter the Philippines for 30 days visa-free. If you want to extend your stay, you have to apply at an Immigration office. You can find all information here .

9 Best things to do in Siargao

Palmtree viewpoint.

One fantastic thing about Siargao is that the Island is entirely overgrown with coconut palm trees. There is a palm tree forest everywhere, and it’s so beautiful. There is a famous viewpoint to see over this vast palm tree forest called “Palm Tree View Deck” on Google Maps. We recommend you come here for sunset. It was magical.

Siargao Palm Tree Viewpoint Couple

Maasin River Palm Tree swing

This is the one place we recommend you come early to, Siargao. It has quite a famous spot and can get busy after 10 am. But it’s definitely worth a visit. Look for Maasin Bridge on Google Maps to find it. We had so much fun swinging from this palm tree into the river and talking to the kids there. We were the only ones when we arrived there at 7 am, and only a few local kids were showing up. The entrance fee is 20 pesos per person, and if you want to use a boat or a raft, you will have to pay an additional 20 Pesos per person.

Maasin River Siargao Swing

Magpupungko Rock Pools

The fantastic rock pools of Magpupungko are not far from the Maasin River, and visiting these two places can easily be combined. Unfortunately, the rock pools were closed during our time in Siargao because it was right when COVID-19 started, and they closed places where many people could come together. It’s quite a famous place to visit, and we heard it’s beautiful. We can’t wait to return to Siargao and bathe at the Magpupungko rock pools.

Cloud 9 is the famous surf break of Siargao. It’s an enjoyable place to hang out, from cute beach cafes where we enjoyed a coffee in the morning to many surfers to watch in the waves. This place offers a lot of entertainment. If you like to learn to surf yourself, many small surfboard rentals offer surfing classes as well. Besides, you can train your balance on the ropes that are spanned between the palm trees or relax in a hammock.

Suppose you need a delicious breakfast after surfing or watching the surfers in the morning, head over to Shaka cafe. They offer fantastic smoothie bowls with an ocean view.

Island Hopping from Siargao

Siargao offers a fantastic three-island hopping tour we can highly recommend. The island hopping tour from Siargao was one of our favorites because it is less well-known than island hopping in other regions of the Philippines. It is cheaper, and the Islands we visited are small paradises. From a big sandbank in the middle of the turquoise ocean to sipping coconuts under palm trees – this day trip was perfect and one of our favorite memories from the Philippines.

Pacifico Beach

Pacifico Beach is located in the area of San Isidro, which is where we stayed during our time in Siargao. This part of the island is not touristy at all, and Pacifico is a long white sand beach with barely other people around. We met a few kids playing at the beach, some locals that went surfing, and only a couple of other people relaxing there. The water is clear and beautiful. This beach has a good break for surfers as well. In San Isidro, you will find a few small restaurants to eat and some basic, more backpacking accommodations to stay in.

Siargao Pacifico Beach Drone View

Alegria Beach

Alegria Beach was our favorite beach in Siargao. It lies in the island’s northern part and is a beautiful white sand beach with the most fantastic turquoise and clear water. The beach was not busy at all, and we had a fantastic time there (besides that, Stefan almost crashed the drone at a palm tree, haha). If you come up north for this beach, don’t miss eating at Jungle Cafe, which is close to Alegria Beach and an absolutely lovely place for breakfast or lunch.

You should count at least 1.5 hours to drive up here from General Luna, so another option is to visit other places like the Rock Pools, Maasin River, or Pacifico Beach on your way up so you won’t have to drive for too long at once. We know the butt pain struggles from too many hours on a scooter very well.

Taktak Waterfall

Taktak is a pretty waterfall that is located in the northern part of the island. If you stay in General Luna, you can combine it with visiting Pacifico or Alegria Beach. The waterfall offers a big pool where you can swim in. The local family takes excellent care of this place.

Visit Sugba Lagoon from Siargao

Sugba Lagoon is a must-visit when in Siargao. This lagoon offers the most transparent water, stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, and more. Visiting Sugba Lagoon from Siargao was one of our favorite things we did in the Philippines. We highly recommend visiting this gem.

Where to stay in Siargao

The main area of Siargao is called General Luna, and it is located in the southern part of the island. General Luna offers fantastic accommodations and many places to eat and go out. Besides, it’s where the famous surf break, “Cloud 9” is located. If you decide to stay in this area, here are a few recommendations on where to stay in General Luna:

  • Kermit Siargao   – Surf Resort and Restaurant
  • Lampara Siargao  – Boutique Hostel at the beach, Glamping, Yoga, and surf
  • Lamari Siargao  – Resort with Restaurant
  • Bravo Resort – Boutique Beach Resort with Beach Bar and Restaurant

We preferred to stay in Pacifico. This area is located more north on the eastern side of Siargao. It is a much less touristy area, great for surfing and empty beaches. Take note that in this area, there are fewer restaurants and things going on. It depends on what you are looking for. But we personally loved staying in this area. We had a scooter and sometimes drove to General Luna. The drive is around 1 hour. In the area of Pacifico, we recommend the following places to stay:

  • Freedom Society – the places where we stayed, with cute pink containers
  • Common Ground – lovely small bungalows and a cafe

Bungalow at Freedom Society Siargao Philippines

Where to eat in Siargao

We heard a lot about how hard it is to find food in the Philippines as a Vegetarian / Vegan, so we were surprised that it wasn’t that hard anymore. The typical Philippino cuisine is indeed very meat and fish-heavy, so the local food was not an option for us personally. But on Siargao, we found the following cute places to eat, which were very Vegan friendly:

General Luna

  • Shaka Siargao – Best smoothie bowls in the Philippines, good coffee and more
  • Cafe Honest – Fully Vegan Cafe, very delicious food, cute little restaurant with seating on 1st floor
  • Kermit – Amazing place for a nice dinner, best Pizza from a stone oven
  • Kitya’s Place – This is a lovely place with delicious and healthy vegan food made with love. We recommend the Quinoa salad bowl

Smoothie bowls at Shaka Siargao

  • Common Ground Cafe – Our favorite place for breakfast, very delicious smoothie bowls, lovely little garden
  • Lokal – Tiny local restaurant, entirely vegetarian, mostly vegan, delicious wraps and best homemade coconut Ice cream ever
  • Jungle Cafe – a very charming place for breakfast/lunch, amazing views, very delicious food, and coffee

Coconut ice cream at Lokal Siargao Philippines

These are the costs we had for the time we spent in Siargao, which will give you an idea of what kind of a budget you will need to travel here:

  • Ferry ticket to get to Siargao: 680 Pesos per person (13$)
  • Accommodation per night: 1500 Pesos (29$) for two persons
  • Costs for food per day: 1400 Pesos (27$) for two persons
  • Scooter rental per day: 350 Peso (6.60$)
  • Three Islands hopping tour: 1500 Peso (29$)

How to get around

The easiest and cheapest way to get around in Siargao is by renting a scooter. It will give you much freedom to explore the different parts of this beautiful island and all the beaches it has to offer. One main road leads around the whole Island, which is a very safe street. Also, there is not a lot of traffic, so we found it easy to drive ourselves and explore the island this way.

Besides renting a scooter, you have the option of taking a Tricycle. These are a popular and cheap way to get around in the Philippines. We usually took a Tricycle to get from the ferry port to our accommodation.

Travel Tips

Internet access.

Internet access in the Philippines is only reliable near big cities. If you’re on one of the many small islands, having internet access may sometimes be a matter of luck. Even though many cafes and hotels offer free WiFi, this doesn’t mean you’re having access to the internet.

From our experience, the best you can do is to buy a local SIM card. There are two major telecom providers: Smart and Globe. We got ours at a small booth at the airport, and we paid 1000 Pesos (around 19 $) for a SIM card with 12 gigabytes of internet data. Toping up your SIM card can be done instantly at one of the many small shops.

The most convenient option for travelers is the eSim Card (digital SIM card) from Airalo . You can download and install a digital data pack and get connected anywhere in the world as soon as you land, so there is no need to waste time looking for a local plastic SIM card.

Environment

We found that Siargao is very clean and that there was no plastic pollution on the beaches or elsewhere. Please help to keep this paradise island clean and leave nothing but footprints.

The island is more commonly known for its world-class surf breaks, such as Cloud 9, though there are plenty more fantastic things to do in Siargao other than surfing.

QUICK ANSWERS: SIARGAO ITINERARY

Here are all the essentials you should know about Siargao including how to get there, what to do in Siargao, and much more.

HOW TO GET TO SIARGAO?

The easiest and best way to get to Siargao Island is by plane.

Domestic flights to Siargao from Manila or Cebu are available on a daily basis and they arrive at Siargao’s only airport in Del Carmen.

From Siargao Airport in Del Carmen to General Luna (the main tourist hub on the island) it’s approximately a 1-hour drive and the cost of the shuttle is around 500 pesos.

WHAT IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT SIARGAO?

Siargao Island is a year-round destination. However, the best month to visit Siargao 2023 is in the dry season which is between the months of March and October, during the dry season.

The off-peak season is during the wet season which is generally between November and February. This is when there are likely to be fewer tourists, which is a good alternative for your Siargao travel itinerary.

For surfers visiting Siargao Island, the best months for surfing is during the swell season which is August through to November.

The best way to explore the island is to join a Siargao Island Hopping Tour !

It includes hotel transfers, a stop at the most famous spots, and a fun guide to share the day with!

HOW TO GET AROUND SIARGAO?

The best way to get around the island is on a scooter, and that’s the most convenient DIY Siargao 2023 itinerary.

The cost for a scooter rental is around 300-400 pesos per day, or for a monthly rental, you’ll get a cheaper rate of 200-300 pesos per day.

Most Siargao accommodations will be more than happy to help you organize a scooter rental for the time you plan to spend on Siargao Island.

Petrol can be found on the side of the road out the front of small local houses/businesses in the majority of the main villages in Siargao. Petrol is sold in 1-liter glass bottles for 60 pesos per bottle.

camiguin scooter 2

HOW LONG TO SPEND IN SIARGAO?

I recommend spending anywhere between 1 to 2 weeks on Siargao to explore the best of the best that this teardrop-shaped island in the south of the Philippines has to offer.

If you don’t have that much time available, 4 days and 3 nights in Siargao is a good amount of time.

This will give you plenty of time to explore the island, go island hopping, and visit a few of the most popular Siargao tourist spots.

SIARGAO BUDGET 2023

While your budget depends on personal preferences, I recommend planning at least $50 per day per person, including tours, accommodation, and food.

While Siargao is still relatively cheap, it’s more expensive than other islands like Bohol or Dumaguete due to its remote location.

WHERE TO STAY IN SIARGAO?

General Luna  is the place to be when searching for the  best places to stay in Siargao!

There are hundreds of accommodation options to choose from, so I have narrowed it down to a few of the best places to stay to fit the needs of luxury, mid-range, and budget travelers.

15 THINGS TO DO ON YOUR SIARGAO ITINERARY

Now that you’ve got all the information on how to get to Siargao, the best time to visit, and where to stay on the island, let’s get to the good stuff.

So, without further ado, here is a complete list of the 15 Best Things To Do In Siargao!

CLOUD 9 SIARGAO

Cloud 9 Siargao is rated as the best surf break in the Philippines and it’s not to be missed on your itinerary.

Whether you are a die-hard surfer or not, a visit to Cloud 9 on Siargao Beach will definitely make your day, especially around sunrise or sunset.

WHERE IS CLOUD 9 SIARGAO?

Cloud 9 Surf is located on the southeast corner of Siargao Island. Cloud Nine Surf can be found in the main tourist hub of General Luna, the most popular place to stay.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT CLOUD NINE SIARGAO?

Cloud 9 is home to the ‘Cloud 9 Surfing Cup’ , a WSL surf event that occurs every year in the peak of the Siargao surfing season between late September and early October.

Each year, professional surfers from around the world compete against each other on the barreling right-hand wave at Cloud 9 Siargao.

If you happen to be in Siargao around this time, you can expect big crowds and lots of parties.

If you are not a big surfer and don’t like crowds, this wouldn’t be the best time to visit Siargao.

The best time to surf Cloud 9 Siargao is on a mid to high tide. It gets very shallow on low tide and the reef beneath the Cloud 9 wave is very sharp.

Be sure to wander out onto the Cloud 9 boardwalk to watch the sunset.

Featuring a long wooden pier that stretches out across the reef and ends at a 3-story viewing platform overlooking the Cloud 9 wave.

MAGPUPUNGKO ROCK POOLS

Magpupungko is a remarkable vista featuring natural rock pools that are best visited at low tide. It’s one of the more popular Siargao tourist spots, and a must-see during your stay.

WHERE IS MAGPUPUNGKO ROCK POOL?

Magpupungko Rockpool is a 45-minute drive from General Luna, located on the east coast of Siargao Island.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT MAGPUPUNGKO ROCKPOOL?

Magpupungko Rock Pools are tidal, meaning that they are only accessible on low tide when they are exposed.

If you arrive at Magpupungko Siargao on a high tide you will not be able to see or even be permitted access to the natural pools for safety reasons.

Be sure to time your visit to Magpupungko correctly or you will be disappointed. To check the Magpupungko tide times in advance, Click Here.

There is a small entrance fee of 50 pesos to visit the Magpupungko Rock Pools.

You could easily spend a couple of hours at Magpupungko and enjoy some cliff jumping, swimming in the natural pools, and exploring the surrounding rocky coastline.

Note: If you are planning to do some cliff jumping at Magpupungko, take a pair of waterproof reef shoes or old walking shoes to climb on the rock formations as they are very sharp and jagged.

The water in the Magpupungko Rock Pools is up to three meters deep so you won’t have to worry about hitting the bottom when cliff jumping.

TAYANGBAN CAVE POOLS

Tayangban Cave Pool is one of the best inland experiences I had during my visit to Siargao Island.

Be sure to add this incredible attraction to your Siargao Island itinerary and discover the unique twin cenotes, bat caves, and emerald rock pools on a canyoneering adventure.

WHERE IS TAYANGBAN CAVE?

Tayangban Cave is located in Pilar, a small village in the center of Siargao Island.

To get to Tayangban Cave Pool from General Luna, it’s approximately a 30-minute drive in the same direction as Magpupungko Rock Pools.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT TAYANGBAN CAVE POOL?

Tayangban Cave is managed by the property owners who charge a small fee of 150 pesos to explore Tayangban Cave Pool. On top of that, you’ll have to go with a guide, so consider tipping him.

There are anchored ropes and some bamboo structures to help you through some of the deeper sections of the Tayangban Cave Pool.

Inside the cave, you can hear the echoing sounds of bats that hang from the ceiling and you can also spot ancient stalactites in the shape of ice pinnacles.

It takes about 15 minutes to reach the end of the cave and it emerges at a unique cenote featuring emerald green rock pools surrounded by vines and lush trees.

There are two cliff jumping spots to choose from at the rock pool, one is from a 2-meter high rock and the second is around 5 meters high.

The depth of the rock pool is 3-4 meters so the chances of hitting the bottom are slim.

Once you’ve enjoyed swimming and rock jumping, it’s a short 5-minute walk back to the entrance.

The palm tree swing in Siargao has gone viral on Instagram since it was discovered on the Maasin River in 2017.

If you are looking for the ultimate adventure, be sure to add this epic palm tree rope swing to your Siargao itinerary.

WHERE IS THE PALM TREE SWING?

The palm tree swing in Siargao is not hard to find, but it can be easily missed.

From General Luna, it’s a 17km drive that takes around 30 minutes to get to the Siargao swing.

As soon as you get to the bright red Maasin Bridge stop here and don’t go any further.

From the red Maasin bridge, you’ll be able to spot the Insta-famous palm tree poking out over the Maasin River Siargao.

MY EXPERIENCE AT THE PALM TREE SWING?

When my friends and I visited, a few friendly locals from Maasin village offered us their small wooden boat so we could get some photos of the palm tree swing.

My buddy Jake took the trail along the right-hand side of the river to reach the base of the bent palm while Jade paddled out in the wooden boat.

Jake swung from the tree multiple times while I was standing back on the Maasin Bridge to shoot photos. After many attempts, we managed to get the shot we were after!

The river beneath the tree swing Siargao is around two meters deep so it’s safe enough to swing and jump without having to worry about hitting the bottom.

SIARGAO ISLAND HOPPING TOUR

The next thing you will want to add to your itinerary in Siargao is a Siargao Island Hopping tour.

Spend the day island hopping between three tropical islands known as Naked Island, Daku Island, and Guyam Island, just a short boat trip off the coast of General Luna in Siargao.

WHERE TO BOOK A SIARGAO ISLAND HOPPING TOUR?

You can book a Siargao Island Hopping Tour online in advance.

This particular tour is the most top-rated Siargao Island Hopping Tour. The tour includes a full day of island hopping on an outrigger boat between Daku Island, Guyam Island, and Naked Island.

On top of that, you’ll get to discover the Coconut Trees View Deck and other spots on Siargao Island, which is the ultimate experience!

Can you think of a better Siargao land tour itinerary? Note that this tour is very popular and I recommend booking as soon as possible.

NAKED ISLAND

The first stop of the day on the Siargao island hopping tour is Naked Island, a must-see when planning a Siargao itinerary 2 days or longer.

The name of this island gives it away, being nothing more than just a tiny naked sandbar in the middle of the ocean with no trees and no other signs of life.

Naked Island is surrounded by a colorful reef with some good snorkeling to be had.

Other than walking around the island in a matter of minutes and swimming with the fish, there is not much else to do on Naked Island Siargao but it was a good spot to send my drone camera up in the air to get some aerial shots.

DAKU ISLAND

Daku Island is the next stop on the island-hopping itinerary, just a short 20-minute boat ride from Naked Island.

Our captain beached the boat on the sandbar at Daku Island and my friends and I were quickly off on foot to explore.

Exploring Daku Island was one of my most memorable highlights during my visit to Siargao Island, and that’s saying something!

I had so much fun exploring the island, climbing coconut palms, swimming in turquoise waters, and getting unreal shots on land and in the air with my drone.

This island is insanely beautiful and I am still now trying to come to terms with the fact that Daku Island actually exists!

You’re definitely going to want to add this island-hopping adventure to your itinerary Siargao.

GUYAM ISLAND

The last stop on the Siargao Island Hopping tour is Guyam Island.

When I think of the words ‘tropical island’ and ‘ paradise’ , Guyam Island is the first thing that comes to mind.

This tiny little island in the middle of the ocean is covered in a miniature coconut palm tree forest and surrounded by glistening white sand and a shallow, rocky reef.

SUGBA LAGOON

Sugba Lagoon is a popular Siargao tourist spot that offers an unforgettable experience at one of the bluest lagoons I have ever seen!

A day trip to Sugba Lagoon is one of the best adventures in Siargao which is why I have added it to this list.

WHERE TO BOOK A SUGBA LAGOON TOUR?

The easiest way to book a Sugba Lagoon Tour is online in advance.

The tour includes a full day of island hopping on an outrigger boat and the places you’ll get to visit are Sugba Lagoon, Kawhagan Island, and Pamomoan Island.

MY EXPERIENCE AT SUGBA LAGOON

The longtail boat ride over to Sugba Lagoon takes approximately 20 minutes as it zig-zags in and out of the mangroves.

You’ll know when you have arrived when you see a big sign reading ‘Welcome to Sugba Lagoon’ at the entrance to the cove.

There is a floating pontoon house in the middle of Sugba Lagoon which is a good place to leave your bags safely and go swimming.

We rented a table for 50 pesos and left our bags there while we were off exploring the Sugba Lagoon.

My friends and I took turns throwing ourselves off the diving board into the lagoon.

The diving board is not the only point of interest at Sugba Lagoon, there are also a number of other water activities to try.

You can rent out kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, and bamboo rafts for as little as 300 pesos per hour.

KAWHAGAN ISLAND

Continuing on from Sugba Lagoon to Kawhagan Island, the trip takes around 20 minutes, and our captain beached the boat on the sandbar on arrival.

We had the entire sandbar to ourselves for a while before some other groups arrived at Kawhagan Island for lunch.

The glistening white sandbar is completely exposed at low tide and there is a small wooden hut to hang out in.

There is also a small local restaurant on Kawhagan Island selling traditional Filipino dishes such as pork adobo and grilled fish with rice for as little as 350 pesos.

Need a place to stay? Nay Palad Hideaway Villas is conveniently located in General Luna, Siargao.

Whether you’re here to explore the sights or relax in comfort, Nay Palad Hideaway Villas is a great option.

PAMOMOAN ISLAND

The last stop of the tour is Pamomoan Island which was newly opened to the public (October 2019) and ultimately is one of Siargao’s best-kept beaches.

Spend some time here enjoying the unspoiled sandy shores and azure waters before making the journey back to General Luna before dusk.

SOHOTON COVE NATIONAL PARK

A day trip to Sohoton National Park in Surigao Del Norte is a must-do day trip from Siargao!

WHERE TO BOOK A SOHOTON COVE TOUR?

The easiest way to book a Sohoton Cove Tour is online in advance. The tour includes a full day of island hopping on an outrigger boat to Sohoton Cove.

ARRIVING AT SOHOTON COVE NATIONAL PARK

As the boat entered Sohoton Cove we cruised through the Titikan Lagoon before docking at the pier at Sohoton Cove National Park.

The water was bluer than I had ever imagined – and I mean SERIOUSLY BLUE!!

If you have a drone camera, I would recommend sending it up from this spot.

I flew my drone as soon as I arrived at the pier at the beginning of our Sohoton Cove Tour and captured some aerial shots of the phenomenal landscapes.

MY EXPERIENCE AT SOHOTON COVE

The first stop inside Sohoton National Park is the Hagukan Cave. This cave is insanely epic, to say the least.

To enter the Hagukan Cave we had to jump off the boat and dive down two meters, swim under a rock ledge, and then swim up into the cave pool on the other side.

I had to hold my breath for about five to ten seconds and my guide led the way into the cave.

Once inside it was quite dark and hard to see but then our guides told us to start splashing around and the water started glowing an electric blue color.

The next stop on the Sohoton Cave tour is the Magkukuob Cave . This spot was super cool with a 5-meter diving board as the main attraction.

To get up to the diving board we had to swim through a small entrance and trek our way through the Magkukuob Cave which then emerges through an opening at the top of the cliff.

I took some photos of my friends throwing themselves off of the 5-meter cliff jump before joining in on the fun myself.

The next stop on the Sohoton Cove itinerary is the Jellyfish Sanctuary.

We were split up into pairs to jump on board a smaller wooden boat with a guide and they paddled us around the corner to the Jellyfish Sanctuary.

When we arrived we jumped into the water and spotted dozens of little orange jellyfish bobbing around in the water. They are safe to touch and they are non-stinging jellyfish.

Continuing on, we cruised across Titikan Lagoon once again to the opposite side of the bay before tucking into yet another beautiful blue lagoon.

Our captain beached the boat at the entrance to the Crystal Cave and we paid a small fee of 100 pesos to enter.

It was so dark inside the Crystal Cave that I didn’t manage to take any decent photos, though I can tell you that it was filled with impressive icicle-shaped stalactites and hundreds of bats.

Before leaving Sohoton National Park to make the journey back to Siargao our captain took us across the lagoon to the  Club Tara Resort Diving Board.

The resort looked abandoned with no other tourists in sight and only a few local Filipinos hanging out on the deck.

Our captain anchored the boat and we swam over to the 5-m diving board, that is attached to the resort, where we spent a good hour or so throwing ourselves over the edge, one by one.

After the copious amounts of fun we had on the diving board we found a dirt trail that leads behind the resort and over a small ridge to  Titikan Lake.

It is definitely worth checking out as the hike to the lake takes only 5 minutes and it was the quietest and most peaceful spot we had discovered that day.

CORREGIDOR ISLAND TOUR

Corregidor Island, also known as Casolian Island, is a dreamy tropical island only 45 minutes by boat from Siargao.

Make sure to add the Corregidor tour to your Siargao itinerary and explore the incredible landscapes and colorful coral reefs that this location has to offer.

WHERE TO BOOK A CORREGIDOR TOUR?

I booked my Corregidor Island Tour online in advance which includes a full day of island-hopping to Corregidor Island, Naked Island, Daku Island, and Guyam Island.

Everything was well organized, going from one spot to another, and my guide knew the best angles for photos, and that was priceless!

MY EXPERIENCE ON THE CORREGIDOR TOUR

At 10 am, my friends and I jumped on our private boat that was waiting on the beach directly in front of the Secret Spot Siargao Hostel.

The journey over to Corregidor Island is 45 minutes, passing Naked Island and Hanoyoy Island along the way.

The skipper beached the boat on Corregidor Beach, a glistening white sand coastline complemented by a palm tree forest, turquoise water, and a colorful reef.

The first few hours on the Corregidor tour were spent snorkeling in the azure waters, climbing palm trees, and enjoying a freshly cooked barbeque lunch and cold beers.

Must Read: 3 Weeks Philippines Itinerary

After lunch, we hiked to the other side of the island, passing by a palm tree rainforest and a small village in the center of the island.

There were kids playing basketball, teenagers singing karaoke from their homes, and elderly people watering their gardens.

We continued past the village to a pebbly beach and followed a trail that led up a grass hill. At the top was one of the most spectacular landscapes I have ever seen.

Coconut palm trees, rolling hills, long grass, herds of water buffaloes, and secluded beaches. I literally felt like I was dreaming.

PACIFICO BEACH

Pacifico Beach Siargao is a cruisey surf town with white sand beaches, tropical palm trees, and world-class surf breaks.

WHERE IS PACIFICO BEACH SIARGAO?

Pacifico Beach is located on the northeastern coastline of Siargao Island.

It’s approximately a 1-hour drive from General Luna. Follow the Siargao Circumferential Rd and you won’t get lost.

In my opinion, you don’t want to go directly to Pacifico Beach as there are so many awesome locations worth stopping at along the way.

If you leave early enough from General Luna you can make a big adventure day out of it.

See below for an ideal one-day Siargao itinerary of things to see and do on the way to Pacifico Beach:

  • Sunrise Palm Tree Viewpoint
  • Palm Tree Road Siargao
  • Palm Tree Swing Siargao
  • Tayangban Cave Pool
  • Magpupungko Rock Pools
  • Pacifico Beach

WHAT TO EXPECT AT PACIFICO BEACH?

Pacifico Beach is a sleepy surf town nestled beneath a coconut palm tree rainforest. This small coastal town in Siargao’s north is the perfect spot to surf, eat, sleep, and repeat!

Pacifico Beach is one of the best surf spots on the island. Many surfers flock here to surf the reef breaks just a short paddle out from the shoreline.

There are a small handful of surf breaks at Pacifico Beach Siargao, all within a couple of minutes walk from each other.

Take your pick of left-hand or right-hand waves that are best surfed on mid to low tides.

SECRET BEACH SIARGAO

Secret Beach Siargao, also known as Guiwan Beach, is one of my favorite beaches on the island and a must-see during your visit.

A short 15-minute drive south of General Luna is this tucked-away slice of paradise waiting to be discovered!

WHERE IS SECRET BEACH SIARGAO?

From General Luna, head southeast along Malinao-Union Rd towards Dapa Town.

At first, the road leads inland and then back down the mountain to the coast road and this is where Secret Beach Siargao can be found.

MY EXPERIENCE AT SECRET BEACH

It’s a 10-minute easy trek from the main road down to the shoreline at Guiwan Beach.

We parked our scooters on the side of the road and followed the dirt trail that threads between a forest of tall coconut palm trees, eventually emerging at the beautiful Secret Beach Siargao.

We threw down a rug on the sand, waxed up the surfboards, and paddled out.

When there is swell, there are two right-hand point breaks to choose from at Guiwan Beach which is more suited for longboarding.

After a surf, Jake climbed one of the palm trees and harvested us all a coconut!

The palm trees have foot holes cut into the sides of their trunks making them quite easy to climb if you are willing to scale one to the top of one for a fresh coconut.

We spent a couple of hours at Secret Beach Siargao exploring the coastline, drinking coconuts, and then experiencing an unforgettable sunset over the horizon.

DOOT BEACH SIARGAO

Doot Beach is one of my favorite chill spots on the island and a must-see on your itinerary.

Doot Beach is one of the least touristy locations in Siargao, surprisingly only a 10-minute drive from General Luna.

Follow the coastal road right to the end and this is where Doot Beach can be found.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT DOOT BEACH SIARGAO?

The drive down to Doot Beach Siargao is a scenic journey down a dirt trail lined with coconut palm trees. When you reach the end of the road you’ll see a sign reading ‘private property.’

We visited Doot Beach with a local Filipino who knew the property owner and said it was completely fine to access the beach as long as we took all of our rubbish away with us and left only footprints.

Palm trees are dotted around the beach, perfect for climbing to the top for a fresh coconut, small boats lay in the bay, and secluded swimming areas can be found as well as an impressive mangrove forest across the freshwater river.

Doot Beach is best visited on high tide and it’s also one of the best spots to watch the sunset in Siargao!

SUNRISE PALM TREE VIEWPOINT

The sunrise viewpoint overlooking the Sea of Palms is a must-see location to add to your Siargao itinerary.

My friends and I stumbled across this incredible viewpoint as we made our way towards the Instafamous Palm Tree Road and the Palm Tree Swing on Siargao Island.

We were stopped in our tracks when we arrived at this insanely beautiful viewpoint to witness an unforgettable sunrise and foggy mist settling in over the Palm Tree Forest.

WHERE IS THE SUNRISE VIEWPOINT?

The Sea of Palms sunrise viewpoint is approximately a 30-minute drive from General Luna in the direction of Pacifico Beach.

I guarantee you won’t miss it as you come around a sharp bend on the Siargao Circumferential Rd that opens up to this elevated viewpoint above the coconut palm tree forest.

PALM TREE ROAD IN SIARGAO

Siargao Island has countless amounts of palm tree-lined roads but there is one road, in particular, that is Instafamous and makes for the ultimate photo.

This spot is best shot with a drone to capture the surrounding landscape. Regardless if you have a drone or not, Palm Tree Road Siargao is still one of the most photogenic locations on the island.

WHERE IS THE PALM TREE ROAD?

Palm Tree Road Siargao is located on the Siargao Circumferential Rd, just 30 seconds around the corner from the Sea of Palms Viewpoint and approximately 2 minutes before the Siargao Tree Swing.

If you are heading here from General Luna, it’s approximately a 30-minute drive.

NATURAL JACUZZI POOL ON HANOYOY ISLAND

The Natural Jacuzzi Pool on Hanoyoy Island (Jacuzzi Island) is up there with one of my favorite locations to visit in Siargao.

It’s a spot that isn’t very well known but it’s equally as awesome as some of the more popular locations on this Siargao itinerary.

The Natural Jacuzzi pools on Hanoyoy Island are tidal, meaning that they are only accessible at low tide when they are exposed.

My friends and I spent a couple of hours sunbaking and swimming in the Natural Jacuzzi Pool on Hanoyoy Island.

HOW TO GET TO HANOYOY ISLAND?

The only way to get to Hanoyoy Island is to walk across the reef from the Siargao mainland at low tide.

The best entrance point to walk across the reef is directly in front of Bayud Boutique Resort.

You can also check when low tide is on Siargao Island before heading over to Hanoyoy Island by Clicking Here .

SANTA MONICA PIER

Last but not least on this Siargao itinerary is Santa Monica Pier which is one of only a few locations on the island that faces west to be able to watch the sun dropping behind the horizon.

The Santa Monica Pier stretches approximately 500m off the Siargao mainland and it’s an awesome spot to send up the drone to get some aerial shots.

WHERE IS SANTA MONICA PIER?

Santa Monica Pier is located on the northwest tip of Siargao Island. From General Luna, it’s a 50km drive that takes around 1 hour and 15 minutes.

If you are heading to Santa Monica Pier from Pacifico Beach it is a short 30-minute drive.

A steady working WiFi isn’t very common. Restaurants offer WiFi, but you can expect it to be extremely slow or not working at all. We recommend you buy one or maybe even two SIM cards. We found that in some areas, Smart Sim worked, whereas in other regions, Globe worked better. Get your SIM cards here .

Transportation Tips

Getting around Siargao Island is relatively easy, thanks to the various transportation options available. Here are some transportation tips to help you navigate the island and make the most of your time in Siargao:

1. Motorbike Rental: Renting a motorbike is a popular and convenient way to explore Siargao. Many rental shops offer different types of motorbikes, including scooters and larger bikes suitable for off-road adventures. Keep in mind that a valid driver’s license is required, and it’s important to wear a helmet and follow traffic rules.

2. Tricycles: Tricycles, a kind of motorized rickshaw, are a common mode of transportation in Siargao. They are an affordable option for short trips within towns or between nearby attractions. Fares are usually negotiated with the driver, so it’s recommended to agree on a price before getting in.

3. Vans and Jeeps: Vans and jeeps are available for hire for longer trips or island tours. These can be arranged through tour operators or rented privately. Vans and jeeps are great for group travel, providing a comfortable and efficient means of transportation.

4. Public Transportation: Jeepneys, local public buses, and habal-habal, which are motorbike taxis, are alternative options for transportation on Siargao. Jeepneys operate on established routes and can be crowded, but they offer an authentic and affordable mode of transport. Habal-habal is an option for short distances and can be found near terminals or busy areas.

5. Boat Transfers: To reach some destinations or nearby islands, boat transfers are necessary. These can be arranged through tour operators or directly with boatmen at the ports. Boat transfers are often available to reach popular destinations like Sohoton Cove, Naked Island, and Daku Island.

6. Plan Ahead for Long-Distance Travel: If you plan to visit attractions outside of Siargao’s main towns, it’s advisable to plan your itinerary and transportation in advance. Some attractions may require additional transportation arrangements, such as boats or tricycles, so it’s best to research and prepare accordingly.

7. Be Mindful of Road Conditions: While Siargao’s main roads are generally well-maintained, some secondary roads and paths to remote attractions may be rough or unpaved. Take caution and drive slowly when encountering these conditions to ensure a safe and comfortable journey.

8. Allow Extra Time: It’s important to factor in travel time, especially if you have scheduled activities or need to catch a flight. Traffic and road conditions can affect travel times, so it’s advisable to leave with ample time for your journey.

By familiarizing yourself with the transportation options on Siargao Island and planning accordingly, you can easily navigate the island and enjoy all that it has to offer without any hassle.

Safety and Health Precautions

While Siargao Island is generally a safe and welcoming destination, it’s essential to keep safety and health precautions in mind to ensure a pleasant and worry-free trip. Here are some important tips to consider:

1. Water Safety: When swimming or engaging in water activities, it’s important to practice water safety. Be cautious of strong currents and waves, especially during the rainy season. If you’re not a confident swimmer, consider wearing a life jacket or staying in areas with a lifeguard present.

2. Sun Protection: Siargao enjoys a tropical climate with plenty of sunshine. Be sure to protect yourself from the sun’s rays by applying sunscreen with a high SPF, wearing a hat, sunglasses, and lightweight clothing that covers your skin. Stay well-hydrated and seek shade during the hottest hours of the day.

3. Mosquito-borne Diseases: Siargao, like many tropical destinations, is home to mosquitoes. Protect yourself from mosquito bites by applying insect repellent, especially during dawn and dusk. It’s also advisable to wear long-sleeved shirts and pants and sleep in accommodations with screens or mosquito nets. Consult with a healthcare professional before your trip regarding any necessary vaccinations or medications.

4. Drinking Water: It’s advisable to drink bottled or filtered water while on Siargao Island. Tap water may not be suitable for drinking, so it’s best to purchase sealed bottled water or use water filters to ensure safe and clean drinking water.

5. Road Safety: If you choose to rent a motorbike or use public transportation, practice caution on the roads. Familiarize yourself with local traffic laws and road conditions. Always wear a helmet when riding a motorbike, follow speed limits, and be mindful of other vehicles on the road.

6. Travel Insurance: It’s recommended to have travel insurance that covers medical expenses, trip cancellations, and other unforeseen circumstances. Check that your insurance provides comprehensive coverage for your trip to Siargao, including any outdoor activities you plan to engage in.

7. Personal Belongings: Keep your personal belongings secure at all times. Use hotel safes for valuable items, and be mindful of your surroundings when carrying bags or using electronic devices. Avoid displaying large amounts of cash in public and be cautious of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas.

8. COVID-19 Precautions: Stay updated on the latest travel advisories and health guidelines related to COVID-19. Follow the recommended safety measures, such as wearing face masks in public, practicing social distancing, and frequent hand hygiene. Be aware of any specific protocols or restrictions implemented by the local government or establishments on Siargao Island.

Siargao Itinerary for Solo Travelers (5D4N)

Siargao Itinerary for Solo Travelers (5D4N)

It was my first official solo travel locally, and I honestly don’t know if it was better or worse than my two recent solo travels abroad ( Bangkok and Bali ).

I got used to not having clear plans for my travels (which is apparently, probably, the only aspect of my life that I don’t plan in detail), but this time I made sure I had a clear Siargao itinerary, to begin with.

Siargao Itinerary

I wanted to switch things up with my Siargao itinerary. I booked a hostel for the first time ( Lampara Siargao ) and also booked a few joiner tours.

For an introvert traveling solo , it would have been a real nightmare, and it kinda was, but I got through it and learned.

In this article

Siargao Budget

My budget for the whole trip was more or less PHP 15,000, including airfare, accommodation, tours, and food. I booked my roundtrip ticket from Clark to Sayak Airport via Philippine Airlines for PHP 3,900. It was around June and my trip was in October.

I figured it was a good deal because I really wanted to go to Siargao but Cebu Pacific, at the time, didn’t have a lot of direct flights from Manila. Plus, it’s not every day that I get a relatively cheaper price from PAL even if it’s from Clark.

Siargao Itinerary

I booked my joiner tours via WOW Siargao , which I found on Facebook. The owner, Manong Sunico, takes a while to reply, but it’s understandable given that he joins the tours sometimes. He’s very friendly once you’re on the tour together. And oh, he also accepts private tours!

Tours include private boat, pick-up from the hotel to the starting point of the tour, lunch, and all entrance, environmental, and docking fees.

Siargao Itinerary

Here’s a breakdown of my expenses:

Siargao Itinerary (5D4N)

Day 1: flight and chill.

My first day was sooo tiring. I went from car to MRT to P2P to plane to van before I finally arrived at my hostel.

I was hoping to watch the sunset at Cloud 9 but it was already dark when I arrived. If you’re staying around General Luna, I highly recommend eating at Harana for dinner. The place features a relaxing ambiance with homey Filipino food, and Leche Ice Cream is located within the premise for dessert!

Leche Ice Cream

  • P2P from Trinoma to Clark is only PHP 280, but be sure to arrive at Trinoma earlier than your scheduled flight because of traffic.
  • There are fast food restaurants around Clark Airport so you won’t be bored while waiting for your flight.
  • If you’re coming in groups, better book a private van pick-up from Sayak Airport to your accommodation. The public van takes a while because they drop off every passenger near their accommodations. It’s not fun when you’re the last drop-off.

Day 2: Sohoton + Tri-island Tour

The Sohoton + Tri-island joiner tour only costs PHP 1,999 per person. There are also packages that offer only Tri-island or Corregidor + Tri-island.

Jellyfish Sanctuary

My tour includes:

  • Sohoton Underground River Activities – Hi Underground River “Hagukan Cave” – Boating Adventure – Jelly Fish sanctuary tour/ Cliff diving
  • Guyam Island
  • Daku Island
  • Naked Island

You may read about my Sohoton Cove and Tri Island Siargao tour.

  • Contact the tour you’re eyeing beforehand so you have a clear Siargao itinerary. I reached out to both individual, local tour guides (some I saw on blogs or Facebook groups) and actual tour providers but I ended up with the latter because of the reviews. If you’re bold enough to try, support the independent locals, too!
  • Never forget your sunscreen! Re-apply as you please. Do invest in eco-friendly sunscreen so you won’t do any harm to the jellyfishes.
  • A safety tip for solo female travelers : Siargao’s nightlife, as they say, is wild so be a little cautious. There’s a mix of tourists and locals. The venue varies every night but it’s pretty easy to know where, as people have a way to pass it through word of mouth.

Day 3: Sugba Lagoon + Land Tour

There are different versions of Siargao’s land tours but I chose this one with Sugba Lagoon for only PHP 1,799 per head.

Read about my Sugba Lagoon and Land Tour Siargao experience here.

Siargao itinerary Sugba Lagoon

  • Sugba Lagoon
  • Magpupungko Rock Pool
  • Maasin Enchanted River
  • Tayangbang Cave
  • Mountain Overlooking View
  • Pacifico Lighthouse
  • Pacifico Beach
  • Baybay Road of Palms

For dinner, I recommend treating yourself to a pizza at Kermit Siargao, known as the best pizza place on the island. There’s a branch in Poblacion, Makati as well.

Kermit Siargao

  • Eco-friendly sunscreen, again.
  • Jumping from the 15-foot high diving board at Sugba Lagoon is a fun experience. It was one of the most memorable parts of my trip! However, please know your limits as it can be dangerous.
  • Be mindful of your time even on a joiner tour. You might have to go back early from Sugba Lagoon to catch Magpupungko Rock Pool on a low tide, which is around 12 PM to 3 PM.

Day 4: Free Day

I originally planned my Friday for Corregidor Island, but I wasn’t able to find any joiner tour. Some locals will offer you a private boat to yourself for PHP 2,000, which isn’t bad if you have a little cash to spare.

I’ve been to Batanes—another one of the best islands in the Philippines —which they say Corregidor Island is quite similar to, so I didn’t push through with it anymore. I ended up spending the afternoon at Cloud 9.

I still recommend adding Corregidor Island to your Siargao itinerary, of course.

Siargao itinerary Cloud 9

I used the day to get lost in nature and explore more Siargao restaurants. I loved my brunch at Greenhouse Cafe , too.

  • If you have a free day, I suggest you rent a motorbike, which typically costs PHP 300 to PHP 400 per day. You may haggle for a lower price if you’re renting it for longer.
  • Try surfing at Cloud 9. Surfboard rent with an instructor only costs PHP 300 to PHP 400.
  • Buy yourself a freaking glass of (slightly) pricey cocktail in White Banana . You deserve it.

Day 5: Flight Home

I went back to Cloud 9 in the morning to watch the sunrise then I went to Shaka for breakfast. It was like 5 minutes away from Lampara so there’s that.

There’s really not much to say for my last day. I was so excited to go home because I oddly missed city life.

Souvenir shops are along Tourism Rd so they’re pretty easy to spot, in case you’re doing last-minute pasalubong shopping like me.

Siargao itinerary

  • If you still have the motorbike, you can stroll around in the morning—maybe go to Pacifico Beach or go back to Cloud 9 for more surfing.
  • Don’t forget to arrange your van pick-up going to Sayak Airport prior to your trip. You may also ask for help from your accommodation.

Lampara Siargao

I was very anxious about having to interact with people while on a solo trip but it was a lesson I needed to learn. Joiner tours and hostel were not that bad.
