imdb the trip 1967

While filming on location at a California beach, TV commercial director Paul Groves is chided by his estranged wife, Sally, for failing to appear to sign their separation papers. Cracking under the pressures of his personal and professional life, Paul asks his friend John, a guru, to guide him through his first LSD trip. After stopping off at a psychedelic nightclub and attending a freak-out at the weirdly appointed pad of a pusher named Max, the two men go to John's place where Paul begins his trip. At first, it is cool and serene, full of brilliant colors and idyllic landscapes. Gradually, however, Sally and the seductive Glenn, a blonde Paul met at Max's, enter Paul's hallucinations, and his journey becomes a phantasmagoria of sexual encounters, medieval rites, and paranoic visions in which he assumes the guilt of mankind. Despite Paul's plea for an antidote, John persuades him to "go with it," and the nightmare progresses to a point where Paul attends his own funeral. Although this episode should be the breakthrough, the trip continues as Paul "sees" John, his head bashed in, slumped lifeless in a chair. Fleeing from the apartment, Paul wanders in a daze about the city until Max sends him to Glenn's beachhouse where he is taken through the final phase of his trip during a sexual experience. When it is finally over, Paul believes he has died, been reborn, and is now standing on the threshold of a new life. Glenn, however, warns him ominously--"It's easy now. Wait until tomorrow."

The film was banned in the UK, because the censors considered it to be an advertisement for LSD. In 2003, the BBFC revised the decision and granted the film an 18 certificate.

Some of the music was provided by the group, The Electric Flag.

In order to prepare for the film, Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper, Bruce Dern and Jack Nicholson all engaged in a group LSD trip.

Jack Nicholson wrote this screenplay for Corman based on his own experience of taking LSD under controlled laboratory conditions and also on his marriage break-up with first wife, Sandra Knight.

The Trip is a 1967 American psychedelic drama film, produced and directed by Roger Corman and written by Jack Nicholson .

It follows Paul Groves ( Peter Fonda ), a director of television commercials in the process of divorcing his wife Sally (Susan Strasberg). In the hopes of finding meaning, he takes 250 micrograms of LSD, with the help of dealer Max ( Dennis Hopper ) and trip sitter John ( Bruce Dern ).

The Trip contains examples of:

  • And Starring : "Starring Peter Fonda."
  • Black Cloak : Paul alternately pursues and is pursued by two Ringwraith -esque beings in black hooded cloaks riding dark horses. At the end of his trip, they corner him on a beach and pull back their hoods, revealing themselves as Sally and Glenn.
  • Character Tics : Before his trip starts, Paul rubs his fingers together and at one point walks his hand along a railing.
  • Crucified Hero Shot : Done a number of times. In one shot, he has an actual cross behind him.
  • Cutting Back to Reality : The film cuts back and forth between Paul's hallucinations and his real life; for example, as he drinks from a dish of stew held by the dwarf in a forest, there's a quick cut to him sipping from a glass of wine in John's apartment.
  • Fanservice : There's a topless dancer in the nightclub Paul wanders into, as well as PG-13-rated nudity from Sally and Glenn (Salli Sachse), a hippie girl Paul becomes infatuated with, and a scene of Paul naked from behind.

imdb the trip 1967

  • Fun with Acronyms : The film's tagline is "A L ovely S ort of D eath."
  • Lens Flare : During one of the shots of Paul running around in the desert.
  • Literal-Minded : One of the effects of the LSD. Waitress : What can I get for you? Paul : Me? Waitress : No, not you, that guy over there. Paul : Oh. Waitress : Okay, wise guy, what do you want to drink?
  • Little People Are Surreal : A dwarf appears in the forest scene, helping his much larger friend prepare a stew. Later, he reappears on the carousel, where he yells, " Bay of Pigs !"
  • Opening Scroll : The movie opens with a "Foreword" calling it a "shocking commentary on a prevalent concern of our time" and warning that the illegal manufacture and consumption of LSD can have fatal consequences.
  • Single Malt Vision : Many of Paul's hallucinations feature quadruple, quintuple, or sextuple vision.
  • Sleep Mask : John has Paul wear one for a few minutes at the very beginning of his trip.
  • Tears of Blood : One scene has Paul with red tears pouring down his face, holding what looks like a child's dismembered arm, while Sally stands across from him with blood dabbed on her face.
  • Toplessness from the Back : Used in the sex scenes with Sally and Glenn.
  • Troubled Fetal Position : When Paul's trip turns bad, he curls up on John's couch, saying, "Oh, I'm dead. I'll never get back. My body's gone."

Review by OhhhNoItsJames ★★★

In the dog days of it's existence legendary animator Shamus Culhane was made head of Paramount's cartoon division an experience he described, as with much in his storied career, as not exactly fun for him. Paramount's offerings in this era came in two forms; funny animal cartoons so brain dead they make the '50s Famous Studios product look like high art and more interesting fare with a very post-UPA, post Gene Dietch flavour to it. This film, directed by Culhane himself, is an example of the latter. Very much a product of it's era from the title down - though, rest assured, despite being released in 1967 the 'Trip' referred to here is a very literal one - it's minimalist childlike designs and suitably groovy jazz score from Winston Sharples (Mr. 'Skiddle Diddle Dee' himself!) make it a rather charming little film regardless.

The Trip is a counterculture movie from 1967. The film stars Peter Fonda as Paul, a disillusioned television commercial director who feels increasingly distant from his daily life. Searching for a sense of purpose, he decides to take LSD in hopes of finding meaning and truth. Susan Strasberg plays Sally, Paul's estranged wife who still cares for him despite their separation. She is concerned about his experiment, but cannot bring herself to stop him. Bruce Dern appears in a supporting role as John, a hippie guide who takes Paul on his psychedelic journey.

The movie, directed by Roger Corman, is a visually stunning exploration of the psychedelic experience. Shot in vivid color, the film is a hallucinatory journey into one man's subconscious mind. The camera work is experimental, using innovative techniques to convey the disorienting effects of LSD.

The Trip is both a reflection of its time and a prescient look at the cultural changes that were to come. The film captures the emerging flower power movement and the rebellion against societal norms that defined the 1960s. It is a snapshot of a moment in history when young people were searching for meaning beyond the corporate culture of the day.

At its core, The Trip is a story about one man's search for the truth. Paul is a man of privilege who feels lost and disconnected from his life. His journey on LSD takes him to the limits of his sanity and brings him face to face with his deepest fears and desires.

Throughout the film, Paul is haunted by visions of his own mortality. He confronts his own mortality and wrestles with the meaning of life. These scenes are visually arresting, capturing the existential dread that accompanies the realization of one's own mortality.

Despite its dark themes, The Trip is a visually exciting and engaging film. The use of color, camera work, and editing create a psychedelic experiences for the audience. And while the film is undeniably trippy, it is also a thoughtful meditation on the human condition.

The Trip was a controversial film upon its release. Some critics praised its exploration of the counterculture, while others condemned it as propaganda for the use of LSD. The film was subject to censorship in some countries and banned outright in others.

Despite this, The Trip has endured as a classic of the psychedelic film genre. The film's themes of alienation, rebellion, and the search for truth continue to resonate with audiences today. The movie is a snapshot of a moment in time when young people dared to question the status quo and seek a new way of living.

In conclusion, The Trip is a thought-provoking and visually stunning exploration of the human mind. It is a film that captures a moment in time when young people were looking for answers beyond the materialism and conformity of the day. The movie is a testament to the power of counterculture and its enduring legacy.

The Trip is a 1967 drama with a runtime of 1 hour and 25 minutes. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.1.
