KZ RV Review: 4.0 Out Of 5.0 Stars

Kz rv overview, kz rv lines, kz rv build quality, kz rv customer support, kz rv warranty, kz rv reviews and ratings, kz rv review: is kz a good rv manufacturer, faq: kz rv reviews, kz rv review.

KZ RVs may not be a household name outside of the recreational vehicle (RV) world like some of the industry’s best RV brands . But for plugged-in RVers, the company is a well-known entity. Over the last five decades, the company has developed a reputation for quality campers, as evidenced both by industry awards and glittering KZ RV reviews.

We wanted to put that reputation to the test. This KZ RV review takes an in-depth look at the company’s costs, quality, customer support, and owner reviews. You can use what you learn to help you decide if KZ is the right RV manufacturer for your new RV.

Between KZ’s well-earned reputation for quality, its large selection of models, and its better-than-average warranty program, the brand is a solid choice for a camper manufacturer at multiple price points. Although there are some of the same complaints you’ll find with any RV brand about quality and service, its strengths earned the company a strong 4.0 out of 5.0 stars in this KZ RV review.

KZ got its start in the RV world making truck campers, operating out of a gas station in Middlebury, Indiana, in 1972. Since then, the company has relocated to nearby Shipshewana where it now produces full lines of travel trailers, fifth wheels, and toy haulers.

While the company–like many–now falls under the Thor Industries umbrella, it has maintained a reputation for producing high-quality towable RVs. KZ makes travel trailers, fifth-wheels , and toy hauler RVs. It doesn’t make motorhomes like Class A , Class B , or Class C RVs. You can find those from brands like Jayco and Forest River .

While it tends to be a little more expensive than some of its competitors, RV buyers can find campers from KZ across the price spectrum. The brand has multiple options in the entry-level category under $30,000 , like the KZ Connect and KZ Sportsmen lines. But the brand also offers a few luxury campers that sell for more than $100,000 brand new.

As with almost every RV manufacturer, you have many options when it comes to features and amenities that you can have built into your KZ RV. These options can easily push an entry-level model into mid-range territory or even higher.

KZ produces 14 lines of RVs, each with its own range of models and floor plans. While some of these lines only feature models in one category, several have models in multiple categories. Different lines offer different sizes and amenities and, as a result, come with different price points.

KZ RVs have a long-held reputation for build quality. When company founder Daryl Zook sold the company to Thor Industries in 2014, many KZ fans were understandably concerned that the company wouldn’t be able to maintain its quality standards. However, so far, that doesn’t seem to be the case.

As a testament to that quality, KZ has won the Dealer’s Satisfaction Index (DSI) Quality Circle award an impressive 18 out of the 25 times it has been issued. Five of those awards were won from 2014 until now.

The DSI Quality Circle award is issued every year by the RV Dealers Association to the top 10 manufacturers in the RV industry, rated on dealer satisfaction. Reliability and quality are some of the primary considerations in this survey. Clearly, RV dealers think very highly of the brand’s quality and have for some time.

In addition to its reputation for build quality, KZ has also built a reputation for providing helpful after sales service. Its customer service phone number is easy to find on the website, although the company does not make it clear when representatives are available.

But much of this reputation likely has to do with the abundance of resources the company makes available to its customers. On its website, KZ offers links to helpful resources like:

  • Owner’s manuals
  • Towing guide
  • Self-service support
  • Vacation planner

Like most RV companies, KZ also has an owners forum where people can share information and ask questions. However, this forum is not as active as those of some other brands, so it may not be as helpful as some. Still, it’s a good place to connect with other KZ owners who might have insight into your particular model.

KZ touts its warranty heavily on its website. Branded as “KZ True 2,” the company’s warranty is a two-year “hitch-to-bumper” warranty. This is an extra year of protection compared to many other big names in the RV industry.

It’s important to note the KZ True 2 warranty doesn’t come with every model. Most models come with a one-year warranty. However, you’ll get the company’s two-year warranty on these products:

  • Durango half-ton fifth wheels
  • Durango fifth wheels
  • Durango Gold fifth wheels
  • Connect SE travel trailers
  • Connect travel trailers
  • Sportsmen fifth wheels
  • Sportsmen destination trailers
  • Sportster toy haulers
  • Venom V-Series toy haulers
  • Venom toy haulers

As with all warranties, it’s important to read the fine print carefully. Companies often include terms and exclusions to warranties that make them cover less than most people would assume. Despite the company’s strong reputation, you should always make sure you know exactly what is and isn’t covered by your warranty.

Based on the company’s reputation for quality and service, it should come as no surprise that it holds an A+ rating and accreditation from the Better Business Bureau (BBB). This top rating from the organization indicates that it handles complaints from customers well.

Reviews from customers do vary a bit online. KZ has an overall 3.6 out of 5.0-star rating on RVInsider , which is above average for the site. Customers gave KZ three or more stars for the Livability, Overall Quality, Floorplan, and Driveability/Towing categories. Curiously, however, they only gave it 2.7 stars in the Warranty category.

Positive KZ RV Reviews

Customers mention just about everything when they leave favorable KZ RV reviews. But the overall build quality and amenities are frequent topics of these reviews.

“Has lots of great options. I love the pullout tubs that go under the u-shaped dinette for easy pull out storage. It had a huge pantry. It has USB charging ports at every bed.” – Jonathan, 2021 KZ Connect
“Very good quality and the fit and finish–the best we have had and this is our fourth RV. It is built with full-time RVers in mind. The rear kitchen and lots of counter space is the best we have seen in any brand.” – Bert, 2017 KZ Durango Gold

Negative KZ RV Reviews

KZ has its share of negative reviews online as well. Most of the people who leave these unfavorable reviews describe quality issues and problems with their dealership.

“It has been at the dealership twice for more than four weeks each time being repaired. The main AC went out, the awning had to be replaced, the pipes are leading in the bathroom, [and] the molding has come loose on the ceiling.” – Troy, 2016 KZ Spree
“Within one month the silicon around the kitchen sink failed and the countertop [delaminated]. The bulb seal along the slide out is dry rotting and cracking. The slide out also leaks into the main cabin if you get caught driving in the rain.” –Tim, 2019 KZ Connect

Despite some reports of quality issues, it’s clear that KZ continues to earn its reputation as a manufacturer of high-quality RVs. You only need to look as far as the fact that it consistently earns a spot among the top RV manufacturers in the DSI Quality Circle awards to confirm.

KZ offers towables at multiple price points, making it an accessible brand for a wide range of people. The company’s two-year “hitch-to-bumper” warranty is also a strong selling point–although it is a little disappointing that this warranty doesn’t come with all models.

Overall, there’s a lot to like about KZ RVs and not much to dislike about the company. For people looking for a dependable RV in the towable category, KZ would be an excellent place to start.

KZ Connect 241 RLK Road Test.

Great value in a lightweight travel trailer.

W e had the pleasure of visiting John Petrie at Niagara Trailers in St. David’s Ontario, located just a few minutes from St. Catharines, not far from the QEW highway, where we had the opportunity to check out the 2018 KZ Connect 241 RLK (Rear Lounge Kitchen) model from the Shipshewana, Indiana company. K-Z has been building lightweight and affordable travel trailers since 1972, with an excellent reputation for quality construction and value at a price that meets the needs of the average RV family.

K-Z builds several RV lines – Durango, Connect, Escape, Sportsmen, Classic, Sportster, Spree, Sidewinder, and Venom, along with its Venture line of towables.

We selected the KZ Connect 241 RLK travel trailer for this RV Show issue of RV Lifestyle Magazine as it is an excellent example of a mid-range lightweight trailer, with all of the features most families need, plus a few extra perks… all in a very well-designed package.

Construction

K-Z has an excellent reputation for building quality RVs at affordable prices. The Connect 241 RLK is a fine example of decades of RV experience blended with modern materials and manufacturing techniques. We were very impressed with the overall fit and finish in this vehicle, and with the level of quality control… this is becoming a concern within the RV industry, as manufacturers race to meet the highest demand in history for travel trailers, motorhomes, and fifth wheels – but with the K-Z models we checked out, the traditional focus on quality seems to remain a top priority – and that will add significantly to your enjoyment of the vehicle, and the resale value when it is time to trade up to a new model.

This trailer invites you inside, with a large entry door, lightweight Euro-style steps built with a strong steel linkage and aluminum steps that feature anti-slip grooves, and a convenient handrail.

connect travel reviews

The Connect 241 RLK, like all of the models in the K-Z Connect series, is built on a heavy-duty I-beam frame, with 2” x 3” floor joists spaced every 16”, and fully welded outriggers. Above the frame, the sub-floor is constructed with 3” stringers and covered with 5/8” tongue and groove plywood decking, and this is covered with high-quality Armstrong® ToughGuard® Linoleum throughout the unit. This assures a creak-free, solid floor, that is easy to maintain. The bottom of the trailer is protected from the elements by a Darco® corrugated moisture barrier, and this enables the engineers to provide a heated, enclosed, and insulated underbelly, in which your tanks and storage compartments are arranged.

Above your head, K-Z builds a roof that is engineered to last, framed with 4 ½” arched truss rafters and covered with 3/8” walkable roof decking, then covered with a layer of SuperFlex® Seamless 1-Piece roofing material. R-7 batten insulation keeps the climate inside the RV comfortable in cold or warm conditions. Our test unit included a 13,500 BTU roof A/C and a digital TV antenna with signal booster.

The walls of the trailer are built with a very durable sandwich construction, with Lamilux® exterior fibreglass Gelcoat that is UVA and UVB resistant on the exterior, covering a wall frame insulated with expanded R-7 insulation. The interior layer of the wall sandwich is 1/8” luan wallboard. The exterior walls have a high gloss colour infused fibreglass surface – the colour scheme is “Sandlewood”. There is a protective front panel of Diamond Plate to reduce the effect of road chips.

The 241 RLK features a dinette slide-out – this component is the latest in RV technology, using a rack and pinion electric slide mechanism with manual override and a box tube slideout ram.

On the Road

We towed the Connect 241 RLK with a 2017 GMC Sierra 1500 pickup. This tow vehicle handles a trailer of this size and weight with ease – indeed, with a an unloaded vehicle weight of 5,310 pounds, the Connect 241 RLK could be towed by any of a wide range of pickups or mid-size SUV models.

The Connect series is engineered to travel. With Trailer King ST 205/75/R14 Radial tires on optional aluminum rims, Dexter E-Z Lube® axles, LCI Trail-Air Equa-Flex™ premium suspension that reduces fore-to-aft movement. The trailer has heavy-duty leaf springs, and auto-adjusting brakes – in short, the Connect 241 RLK is equipped with the optimum trailer, suspension and running gear for an RV in this category.

A trailer of this size and weight is best towed with a class III equalizing hitch, and sway control is always a good idea, whether you are towing with a pickup or an SUV.

In the Campground

The Connect 241 RLK offers a full range of exterior features to extend your comfort to the patio area of your campsite. The Smart Arm Awning rolls out at the touch of a switch, and retracts in just a few seconds when it’s time to hit the road. There is an optional wind and motion security sensor for the Smart Arm Awning.

Exterior stereo speakers with LED lights add a touch of class and ambiance to your evening entertaining. There is, of course, an exterior shower, and you have all of the RV and entertainment hookups within easy reach, placed just where you need them, including electric, water, and sewer connections, as well as cable TV and satellite hookups.

There are several unique features that caught our attention – for example, the Connect unit we tested was equipped with a ToyLok® – included in the K-Z Advantage Package – this is the ideal way to lock up your bikes so you don’t have to worry about them riding off into the sunset without you.

Exterior storage compartments are spacious and easily accessible, thanks to large radius-cornered doors with magnetic catches.

Spacious Interior

The trailer has an excellent interior floorplan, well suited for a family of four to six people. We always prefer layouts with large windows to let in the natural light, and overhead skylights and lumidomes, and the 241 RLK delivers on all of these points.

In the Galley

The galley features seamless countertops, an under-mount kitchen sink with cover and a residential quality faucet with pull-out spray-head. These are easy to clean, and well-sized for cooking. Appliances include an 8 Cu. Ft. gas/electric refrigerator with stainless steel doors, a stainless steel microwave/oven combo, and a 3-burner range with oven. Cabinets and drawers are well built using Woodbridge maple cabinetry with hand-crafted mortise and tenon glazed cabinet doors, and all drawers and cupboards are large enough for your camping gourmet requirements.

The exterior galley is equipped with a small RVision refrigerator and a two-burner cooktop mounted on a pull-out shelf under the countertop. The hatch that covers the exterior galley opens to store flat against the side of the trailer, held in place by a magnetic latch.

Entertaining in the Connect 241 RLK

Your guests will be supremely comfortable in the optional theatre seating – we loved the jackknife sofa… and they will enjoy excellent sound from the multi-media stereo – the unit features Bluetooth, DVD and NFC (near-field-connectivity) wireless connectivity so you can stream music from your portable device right into the entertainment system. An omnidirectional HDTV antenna brings in signals from local broadcasting towers

connect travel reviews

In the Bedroom

The Connect master bedroom takes up the front portion of the floor plan, and the queen bed with pillowtop mattress is conveniently placed so you can walk around it. Under-bed storage is easily accessible, with plastic bins to help you organize your gear. The closet space is well suited to a trailer of this size.

I n the Bathroom

For a trailer of this size, the 241 RLK provides a spacious bathroom complete with a full-size shower, foot-flush toilet, and a vanity.

connect travel reviews

The Bottom Line…

All in all, the Connect line is a very attractive and well-appointed choice for the active RV family. We were very impressed with the overall quality, and with the thoughtful addition of items that are not normally included with a trailer of this size and price point – from the fibreglass front cap, one of the features included in the Platinum option package, to the rear ladder and cargo storage system, this is a trailer that sets the benchmark for the category.

The Connect 241 RLK is covered by a 24-month hitch to bumper manufacturer’s limited warranty.

Pilates Retreat Transfer in Italy

From the start of the process to completion Connecto were brilliant to work with. I needed to arrange several transfers for 10 clients and found the system easy to navigate and straight forward to make changes. The drivers were courteous, punctual and friendly. I could not fault the service. I would have found it useful to be able to pay prior to the transfers, or to pay with card to avoid potentially carrying large amounts of cash.

It was easy to book taxi both for transport from airport to our stay and back. I appreciated that they sent sms prior to tell who is coming to pick us up on both ways so we didn’t had to worry if the taxi would come or not. If I return to Alicante/Torrevieja I will use their services again. I highly recommend Connecto transfers.

Date of experience : June 14, 2024

Driver arrived ahead of pickup time and was friendly. He took our bags and loaded them in the vehicle. The car was spacious and comfortable. It was early morning and I appreciated the radio being at a very low volume. He was courteous and polite. He got us to the airport ahead of schedule. Good communication after booking about pickup times, etc. Highly recommend.

Great service

This is my go to transfer service in Spain. They are always on time, clean cars and friendly drivers. I've forgotten luggage in their car once, got a call later asking if it was mine and delivered it to my hotel. Another time I didn't find my driver at the airport, a lot of people that day. Resolved within minutes by calling them. Used them for years and will continue doing so for many more!

Amazing, friendly driver with clean car

We had an amazing driver who spoke very good English and was very friendly. He was more than happy to chat and give us tips and recommendations for our stay in Dubrovnik. The car was clean and tidy and we got to our accommodation safely. Would definitely recommend this service.

We were impressed that they informed us…

We were impressed that they informed us via email about the 20 minutes delay due to heavy traffic so we didn't have to wait standing outside the hotel. We were enjoying our last drink at the hotel in a stressfree atmosphere. We reached the airport safely with no further delay. This service is strongly recommended as we used it couple of times before in other countries and we have never experienced any difficulties. I grab this opportunity to thank you for the impeccable services.

Date of experience : June 12, 2024

Professional and convenient service

We booked our transfers for Albania at the last minute, before boarding our plane. The process was simple and we received confirmation pretty quickly. When we arrived at the airport, our driver was already there and messaged us to let us know. Both transfers were like this and our drivers were friendly and professional.

Everything was perfect

Everything was perfect, driver at arrival time at airport, car was superior than booked without surcharge, safe drive. Will book you again.

Date of experience : June 13, 2024

Excellent airport transfer at a competitive price

Driver turned up exactly on time to pick us up from our hotel and take us to the airport. he was very professional, helping us with our luggage at both ends of the journey, and the car was superb. We were admiring the view down to Dubrovnik Old Town from the coastal road, and the driver offered to stop briefly at a viewpoint for us to take photos - this was not expected, but was very kind of him and much appreciated. Excellent service at a very competitive price - we would definitley recommend ConnectTo Transfers.

Date of experience : June 10, 2024

The service was excellent

The service was excellent. Booked in advance and received an update well before the appointment and also arranged direct contact with the driver in question. Agreements were correctly fulfilled for a fair price agreed in advance. The drivers were very friendly and helpful.

Date of experience : June 06, 2024

absolutely recommendable!

very polite and professional driver came few minutes before the arranged time. Nice and clean car. Custom service very friendy - due to bad expirience with other company, I called them one hour in advance to confirm my order again :) the excellent price/quality ratio! see you again.

Date of experience : June 09, 2024

Very good, excellent driver!

We went from Catania to Taormina. 1hour drive. Driver was on time, he met us at the airport with a sign very easy to find, and drove us safe to our destination. New and nice car. Very Good experience!

Reliable, Clean and Professional

Pre-booked a taxi from Connecto Transfers to collect us from the airport and return from the hotel for our trip to Girona. They were fab - the drivers were on time, meeting us as we left arrivals and on the return journey, being 10 minutes early at our hotel. The cars were clean and comfortable and the drivers were friendly and professional. Will definitely use this service again.

Date of experience : June 01, 2024

Gave us confidence to definitely use again

Reassuringly right there holding our name sign as we flew in and had checked our flight arrival time as delayed. Picked up us on return drive exactly as requested and perfectly on time.

Date of experience : May 19, 2024

Good service but issue with child car seats

The transfer drivers were on time and very helpful. However we paid for 2 child car seats for both journeys to and from the airport, but on both journeys the driver had only 1 car seat even though we had paid for 2 and it was noted on the transfer details that 2 were required. It was a bit of a safety issue as we had small kids that both needed car seats.

Excellent Service

Absolutely excellent service from start to finish. We had transfers both to Cavtat from the airport and from Cavtat back to the airport and both times the drivers were on time and very helpful and friendly. Would definitely use Connecto Transfers again and would recommend them to anyone needing this service. Thank you Connecto for making our perfect holiday go to plan from start to finish.

Really let us down

Booked a taxi on 28th May, on the day we were travelling cancelled our taxi, we arrived last into Alicante and the trouble we had getting from there to Benidorm, because no one would take a booking from us because we were not within 48 hours of travelling. Disaster.

Date of experience : June 02, 2024

AVOID AT ALL COST

AVOID AT ALL COST! Had three reservations with them for the last days. First driverin RJK showed up late, holding a piece of paper with my name on it. Written so tiny, you had to stand right in front of him, to be able to read it. Second pick up in BEG was stuck in traffic and more than 45 min late. And today my driver in BUD didn’t show up at all. After calling Connecto they out me on hold for 7 min, coming back stating the phone of my driver would be busy. They will try reaching her and calling me back. 12 min later I received a call, claiming tjey still aren’t able to contact the driver. They may try to find someone else but this may take at least 1 more hour. I finally had to take an Uber.

This was actually a 5star experience…

This was actually a 5star experience but I gave them 4 stars as there was miscommunication regarding the pick up. I do not think it was the drivers fault. We gave an address and I was contacted the day before they could not find the address on GPS so I gave them the address of the nearest hotel and we walked there to meet the driver except he was at the original meeting place and we had walked right past him. Once I emailed the company to say driver has not arrived they got on it and he arrived.

Service was easy to book and quite cost…

Service was easy to book and quite cost competitive against the options I could find. Driver was prompt, friendly, safe and very helpful/patient at the final destination, in getting us into a not so easy location. Would highly recommend based on my experience

KZ Connect travel trailer C272FK highlights:

  • Hide-A-Bed Sofa
  • Dual-Entry Bath
  • Double Slides

You can use this Connect travel trailer whenever you want to get away! You will remain comfortable each night sleeping in the rear master suite , and this bedroom area even has the second exterior entry door so that you can slip out for your morning run easily. The front kitchen has a full-width countertop for lots of extra space to chop veggies and prep meals, and the large slide in the main living area holds the booth dinette and hide-a-bed sofa. The sofa can be switched out for optional theater seating and the dinette can be switched out for an optional table and chairs. These pieces of furniture rest across from the 34"   fireplace for a cozy evening with a cup of coffee, and there is a walk-in pantry where you can grab snacks.

The KZ Connect travel trailer comes with an RV Airflow System which optimizes the airflow for your air conditioner by increasing the airflow by an average of 40%. This improves performance, speeds up cooling times, and reduces noise in your trailer. Some of the other helpful features found on the Connect are the heated, insulated, and enclosed underbelly , the exterior docking station , the fiberglass front cap with front windshield, the 82" interior ceiling height, and the protective front diamond plate. There are some useful technological features, like the two LED motion-sensor lights, the HDMI and USB charge, and the multi-media entertainment system with a DVD player. The KZ Engage is powered by OneControl, and it monitors battery levels and controls slide rooms, the leveling system, the awning, inside/outside lighting, and the TPMS prep.

KZ Logo

KZ was founded in the heart of Northern Indiana’s Amish country, and still calls this area our home. The first RV KZ offered back in 1972 was a truck camper, and was designed, fabricated and assembled by two employees. Then 12 employees. Then we added travel trailers. And 20 employees. Then fifth wheels. Over the years, as the product selection grew, so did the headcount. Today, the KZ campus covers 530,000 square feet of manufacturing space, includes over 600 employees and 12 product lines, and offers over 150 floorplans.

KZ is focused on becoming the most innovative RV company in North America, continuing to lead the industry with new and inventive products, and building a strong foundation for their constant growth. Great ideas can come from anywhere, and KZ encourages all employees to aggressively critique our products. Our product development committee is made up of representatives from every department who are charged with the task of sorting through the employee, retail customers, and dealer recommendations, and developing those ideas into innovative new products.

Growth is exciting, but only if it’s planned, and our growth won’t come at the expense of quality. KZ is a well-run company, a profitable company, and a well-liked company because its leadership team lets its employees know that it not only wants them to produce quality products, but expects them to take ownership of that quality. KZ is committed to building RVs with the same quality we want for our own families. This philosophy alone has influenced every step in the production process. It’s no wonder that KZ’s retail customer and dealer satisfaction index ratings are among the highest in the industry, and the reason we offer a two-year warranty on most brands.

People make a difference, and at KZ, our employees make all the difference in the world. As you’ll discover, no matter which of our dealers you choose to conduct business with, you’ll always be speaking with someone who takes you seriously and treats you with respect. Quality products and business integrity are a way of life with all our KZ dealers

NDP MP who's rarely on Parliament Hill billed taxpayers for travel with family over Christmas

Niki ashton billed taxpayers for $17k trip to meet 'stakeholders' over the christmas break.

Social Sharing

An NDP MP who frequently joins parliamentary proceedings remotely from her riding billed the House of Commons for a trip she took to reportedly meet with "stakeholders" over the Christmas holidays in Quebec — travel that included bringing her husband and kids along at taxpayers' expense.

Parliamentary travel records indicate NDP MP Niki Ashton was only in Ottawa on one occasion for four days during the fall 2022 sitting.

But on Dec. 21 of that year, Ashton flew from Thompson, Man. to Ottawa — five days after the House of Commons had already risen for its Christmas break.

Ashton's partner Bruce Moncur, a former NDP nomination candidate, and their two children also made the trip with the MP to the nation's capital.

Then, on Christmas Day, 2022, the family of four travelled to Quebec City. Ashton billed the Commons for some of the expenses they incurred along the way.

Social media posts show Moncur and the children took in some of Quebec City's winter attractions, including an ice slide and snow tubing at Village Vacances Valcartier outside the city centre.

Ashton is also seen in those posts skating with her children and visiting the city's German Christmas Market.

In an Instagram post, Ashton thanked "progressive activists" for sharing their "inspiring work."

  • Loophole leaves taxpayers picking up tab for MP travel
  • House of Commons committee should close loophole on MPs' travel, Liberal MP says

The trip cost taxpayers $17,641.12, including $13,619.90 for airfare and other transportation, $2,508.39 for accommodations and $1,512.83 for meals and other incidentals, according to Commons records.

Ashton justified billing taxpayers for the trip by claiming she was going to the provincial capital to "attend meetings with stakeholders about business of the House" over the holidays, according to House of Commons travel records.

Ashton's office referred inquiries about the travel to a party spokesperson.

Reached by phone Wednesday, an NDP spokesperson said Ashton was in Quebec City "to discuss language priorities" because she's the party's critic for official languages and needed to "find out things she needs to prioritize."

Ashton also "met with a union person," the spokesperson said.

On Dec. 30, 2022, Ashton, Moncur and their children then travelled to Montreal. Ashton again cited "meetings with stakeholders" as the reason for claiming expenses.

The NDP spokesperson said Ashton was again engaging with people about "linguistic issues" while in the province's biggest city.

The family returned to Ottawa on New Year's Eve before flying home to Thompson early in the new year.

NDP MP Niki Ashton pressed on family Christmas trip on taxpayer dime

At a press conference on another matter on Thursday, Ashton was asked repeatedly who she met with while in Quebec.

Ashton would only say that it was "various people" who are "connected to the issue of French language, French culture preservation." She said she wanted to get feedback on an overhaul of the Official Languages Act from unnamed groups.

Asked if she regretted the Christmas season trip, Ashton said the travel was approved by Commons administration and her job involves "travel and meeting with stakeholders, engaging with stakeholders."

NDP MP Niki Ashton justified billing taxpayers for a Christmastime trip to Quebec by claiming she was going to Quebec's capital to "attend meetings with stakeholders about business of the House" over the holidays

The NDP spokesperson said Ashton "paid out of pocket" for some additional expenses incurred on statutory holidays like Christmas Day.

The spokesperson added that some of the trip expenses were related to the family staying at a hotel while in Ottawa — and not at her second residence in the city — because her apartment was being treated for bed bugs.

The spokesperson said Ashton is in Ottawa less often than some of her colleagues because she's the mother of two young children and participating virtually — which is permissible under the rules — is a better fit for her schedule.

In a media statement sent to CBC News, Alana Cahill, the party's director of communications, said Ashton is "a strong representative for the people of northern Manitoba" who "sometimes travels to other parts of the country in order to meet with experts and advocates on the infrastructure challenges facing northern, rural communities and for work related to her critic portfolios."

"House of Commons rules allow members of Parliament to travel for parliamentary business. Niki followed all the rules and the House of Commons approved her travel expenses," Cahill added.

'It smells really fishy' - CTF director

Franco Terrazzano is the federal director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, a group that advocates for lower taxes and more accountable government. He said Ashton's travel "looks really bad and it smells really fishy."

"If Ashton doesn't want Canadians to think that she billed taxpayers so she could take a vacation to Quebec over the holidays, then she better have a very good explanation, a very concrete explanation as to what value, if any, taxpayers actually got from this trip," Terrazzano told CBC News.

He said "ordinary Canadians" are struggling with the cost of living and they get frustrated seeing MPs charge for substantial travel expenses.

"Did taxpayers get more than $17,000 in value out of this trip? Maybe she could have saved taxpayers a whole bunch of money by picking up the phone instead — especially if Ashton is already Zooming into the parliamentary procedures," he said.

Terrazzano said there needs to be greater oversight of MP travel expenses and he's calling for some sort of "review" of what's allowable under the rules to prevent abuse.

Nearly $10,000 for a trip to Windsor

On another trip in May 2023, Ashton travelled — again with Moncur and her kids — to Windsor, Ont. where Moncur grew up and went to school and university.

The six-day trip to Windsor happened as Ashton was travelling infrequently to Ottawa for parliamentary proceedings.

Travel records suggest she was physically in the nation's capital for fewer than 30 days — including some weekends — over the first six months of 2023.

The Commons sat for 70 weekdays over the same time period.

Unlike senators, MPs can participate in debate and committee meetings virtually under pandemic-era rules that were made permanent in 2023.

The Windsor trip cost taxpayers $9,748.03 — all of it for airfare. Ashton did not charge for any accommodations or incidentals.

NDP MP Niki Ashton addresses the media at a national caucus strategy session on Tuesday, September 10, 2013 in Saskatoon. Ashton is refusing to categorically state whether she wants Tom Mulcair to stay on as party leader.

Ashton flew there to "attend meetings about constituency issues," according to the Commons travel records.

The NDP spokesperson said Ashton was in Windsor to meet with people associated with a "soccer recreation centre," to learn about "federal funding to create some soccer opportunities in northern Manitoba for Indigenous folks."

Ashton has in the past encouraged the federal government and FIFA, soccer's governing body, to invest more money so that more Indigenous youth can play the game.

While in Windsor, Ashton also travelled across the border to Detroit to meet with Democratic Congresswoman Rashida Talib, the NDP spokesperson said.

Rules allow MPs to take family on some official trips

The Commons' travel system allocates a certain number of points to an MP each year for travel.

But each trip must have "a specific purpose of travel and be for the purpose of the fulfilment of the Member's parliamentary functions," the Commons rules say.

The rules loosely define "parliamentary functions" as activities "relating to the proceedings and work of the House of Commons and activities undertaken in representing his or her constituency or constituents."

The rules do stipulate that "parliamentary functions" do not include "activities related to the private interests of a member or a member's immediate family."

The points can be used by a member to travel between Ottawa and their constituency, for travel within their constituency and for travel from Ottawa or the constituency to their provincial or territorial capital.

Some of the points can also be used for what the Commons calls "special trips" — other trips within Canada.

An MP can allocate some of their points to cover the travel costs of a "designated traveller" chosen by them — typically a spouse. An MP's dependents are also eligible to have some of their travel covered.

The rules stipulate that designated travellers and dependents can use points to "reunite" with an MP at their Ottawa residence or "at another location where the member is carrying out parliamentary functions."

Under the rules, MPs, designated travellers and dependents can travel in business class if the flight is more than two hours long.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau arrives in Grottaglie, Italy on Wednesday, June 12, to attend the G7 Summit. Trudeau has been roundly criticized for his use of taxpayers' funds for personal travel.

Terrazzano said MPs should think "about what their constituents would say" before taking big-ticket trips. He also said the Commons should consider tightening the rules on when MPs can be accompanied by their families on subsidized trips.

Asked about Ashton's expenses, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh said MPs have to follow strict rules in submitting their expenses to the House of Commons.

"I expect all my MPs and all MPs in the House to follow those rules and submit claims," Singh told reporters on Thursday. "Those claims were submitted and approved."

Last month, CBC News reported on a loophole in the rules that allows MPs and senators to charge Parliament for travel to party conventions.

Under the Commons rules, MPs can claim expenses related to national caucus meetings, which are considered part of their parliamentary duties.

Conservative MPs billed the House of Commons $426,283 to attend a caucus meeting associated with the party's policy convention in Quebec City in September 2023, including $331,699 for travel, $71,408 for accommodations and $21,053 for meals and incidentals.

NDP MPs also billed Parliament $83,087 to send MPs and a dozen of their employees to a caucus meeting associated with the party's convention in Hamilton in October 2023, according to a CBC News review of travel claims.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau routinely faces criticism over his travel.

Trudeau's 10-day vacation with his family at Prospect Estate near Ocho Rios in Jamaica cost taxpayers $230,442. Most of that was for security-related costs, which MPs don't have.
