Ibeyi Have Revealed The US Tour Dates For Their 2023 ‘Spell 31 Tour’

Lucas Villa

After having to postpone their tour last year, Ibeyi will be touring the US starting in March. Today (January 18), the French-Cuban duo announced the dates for their Spell 31 Tour .

Ibeyi is comprised of sisters Lisa-Kaindé and Naomi Diaz. They were originally scheduled to tour the US last year in support of their Spell 31 album, but they had to postpone the trek. With their global perspective and soulful sound, Ibeyi continued to push alternative music to new places with the LP. The album featured the songs “Lavender & Red Roses” featuring Jorja Smith and “Made of Gold” with Gambian-British rapper Pa Salieu.

For those fans who were waiting for Ibeyi to return to the US, they announced the dates for their Spell 31 Tour . The tour kicks off in LA on March 10. Ibeyi will perform in cities across the country throughout the month. On April 2, the tour will wrap up in Miami. Check out Ibeyi’s website for information on when tickets will be available.

Ibeyi’s Spell 31 album was released in May. Last year, they also teamed up with Puerto Rican rapper Residente for his powerful song “This Is Not America.” In 2016, Beyoncé included the duo in her visual Lemonade album.

Speaking to NME in March, Ibeyi said they will tour ‘Spell 31’ with two supporting musicians in their live show, for the first time in the band’s history. “For nearly 10 years [it was] Lisa and I alone on stage,” explained Naomi. “For the first time, we’re going to have a band with [us]. So, there’s going to be four on stage now.”

Ibeyi are set to release their third studio album ‘Spell 31’ on May 6 via XL, and will include their released singles ‘Lavender & Roses’, ‘Sister 2 Sister’ and ‘Made Of Gold’ . Longtime collaborator Richard Russells reprises his role as producer for the sisters on ‘Spell 31’, which features collaborations with Pa Salieu and Berwyn among others.

ibeyi tour 2023

At the end of Ibeyi’s Portland concert, after the rapturous applause between set and encore, Lisa-Kaindé and Naomi Diaz returned to the minimalist stage and sat on stools. They had just played for 90 minutes, touching on all three of Ibeyi’s albums, taking the audience on a tour of songs that ranged from English to Spanish to French. Lisa-Kaindé explained that the past few years had been difficult for the French-Cuban Diaz sisters, who are twins, and that her way of dealing with pain is by crying. The more stoic Naomi, on the other hand, dances out her frustration in the club. Naomi compounded her sister’s point by leaping off her stool and doing some drop-down moves. The duo then finished the show with “Tears Are Medicine,” from last year’s record, Spell 31 .

Despite being twins, the sisters of Ibeyi are a study in contrasts. Lisa-Kaindé is more extroverted on stage, the one whose songs edge towards sentimentality. Naomi, on the other hand, moves with a quiet force. She often has a bemused look on her face, her raspier voice taking on the duo’s edgier material. Even in clothing, there is a contrast. Lisa-Kaindé sported a green and black sports bra with blue yoga pants while Naomi rocked a black laced-up top with black sweatpants and stiletto heeled-boots. Together, the alchemic balance creates something astonishing.

Opening with new song “Made of Gold,” the Diaz sisters set an intensely energetic tone right away, coming to the lip of the stage and working the crowd while their backing keyboardist/bassist and drummer held down the rhythm. Both sisters are phenomenal dancers and during the vocal breaks didn’t hesitate to show off their moves.

The sisters alternated singing and dancing up front or taking their places behind their respective instruments. On “Away Away,” from sophomore album Ash, Lisa-Kaindé played the keyboard while Naomi beat on a percussive box, trading verses. The song reached its crescendo when the twins sang together, twisting into something spellbinding.

Though Naomi and Lisa-Kaindé were supposed to tour the States last fall, the dates were abruptly canceled. Combined with the pandemic, Ibeyi fans have waited a long time for the Diaz sisters to grace our stages again. It was worth the wait. Lisa-Kaindé served as hype woman, asking the crowd for more energy while exclaiming, “It feels so good to be back!” Meanwhile, Naomi wasn’t shy in her dancing, sometimes dropping to the ground and thrusting herself towards the audience.

Though there were a few mediocre moments (such as single “Juice of Mandarins”), songs like “Deathless” more than overcame any sections where the energy lagged or things got too saccharine. Taking the song’s hard-edge to a further extreme, the Diaz sisters got the crowd chanting along and throwing up defiant fists. Meanwhile, “River” might be their most popular song, but seeing Ibeyi play it live after so many years away ended the first set on a high. The concert felt like a celebration of life, sisterhood and rising above the odds. Let’s hope the Diaz sisters make it back our way sometime soon.

PGA TOUR winner Grayson Murray passes away at 30

PGA TOUR winner Grayson Murray passes away at 30

Change Text Size

Grayson Murray, who won his second PGA TOUR title at this year’s Sony Open in Hawaii, passed away Saturday.

"We were devastated to learn – and are heartbroken to share – that PGA TOUR player Grayson Murray passed away this morning. I am at a loss for words,” PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan said. “The PGA TOUR is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same. We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones.

“I reached out to Grayson’s parents to offer our deepest condolences, and during that conversation, they asked that we continue with tournament play,” Commissioner Monahan continued. “They were adamant that Grayson would want us to do so. As difficult as it will be, we want to respect their wishes.”

Grief counselors were made available at the venues for this week’s PGA TOUR and Korn Ferry Tour events. Commissioner Monahan, who traveled from TOUR headquarters in Florida to Fort Worth, Texas, said more information will be shared when it is available.

Murray, 30, was a standout golfer from his youth. He won three consecutive Callaway Junior World Championships (2006-08) and was the top-ranked golfer in his age group. He made his first cut on the Korn Ferry Tour at age 16, becoming the second-youngest player ever to do so. After stints at Wake Forest University, East Carolina University and Arizona State University, he got the break he needed in 2016 when he was given a sponsor exemption into the Korn Ferry Tour event near his hometown of Raleigh, North Carolina. He finished inside the top 10 at that event, the Rex Hospital Open, which qualified him for another start. When he posted another top 10 at the BMW Charity Pro-Am, his professional career took off. He concluded his season with a victory at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship to finish second on the Korn Ferry Tour money list and earn full status on the PGA TOUR for the 2016-17 season. The win came a week before his 23rd birthday.

Murray wasted little time establishing himself on golf’s biggest stage as a rookie. He won the 2017 Barbasol Championship while still just 23 years old. His final-round 68 not only secured a one-shot victory, but also solidified a two-year exemption through the 2019 PGA TOUR season. He finished 66th in the FedExCup and earned nearly $1.5 million.

Grayson struggled for the next few seasons on the PGA TOUR. In 2023, he found his game again on the Korn Ferry Tour; he notched two victories – the Advent Health Championship in Kansas City and the Simmons Bank Open outside of Nashville – to finish fourth on that tour’s points list and earn a spot back onto the PGA TOUR for the following season.

Murray opened the 2024 season with a playoff victory at the Sony Open in Hawaii. He made a clutch up and down on the 72nd hole for a birdie to force a playoff. Then he sank a 40-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole to defeat Byeong Hun An and Keegan Bradley. He reached a career-high 46th in the Official World Golf Ranking after that victory.

Megan Thee Stallion

“Y’all, this is my first tour ever!” Megan Thee Stallion shouted with glee after picking up a floral bouquet thrown onto the stage by a fan. Surprisingly, after headlining and performing at numerous festivals in the years since her star began to rise in 2017, Stallion’s “Hot Girl Summer ” is her first full-scale headlining trek, and on this Tuesday night she’d sold out New York’s iconic Madison Square Garden.

Popular on Variety

The energy peaked and the crowd went batshit when a special guest walked onstage to show her support: Cardi B. The two rapped “Bongos” and their smash single “WAP,” although Cardi was more focused on dancing. Next, Stallion’s opener GloRilla, whose set earlier in the night got a visit from A Boogie Wit da Hoodie, came out joined the pair for “Wanna Be.”

“Y’all wanna hear ‘Wanna Be’ with muthafuckin Cardi B?” GloRilla shouted. “‘Wanna Be’ muthafucking remix about to drop y’all — be ready. Stay tuned!”

But just when it seemed the audience couldn’t get any rowdier, “Savage Remix” came thundering through the speakers, although Beyonce did not join in for their joint 2019 hit, which for many is filled with memories of learning TikTok dances at home to pass the time during pandemic lockdown.

She closed out “Savage” and the night, picking up another bouquet as confetti drenched the stage, blowing kisses and saying a tearful goodnight: “I love you, New York Hotties!”
