Police Department Cruise Mode Lights

Consultation has concluded.

In January 2023, the City of Fairfax Police announced a new initiative to increase public safety and visibility of patrol officers. Patrol vehicles began using "cruise mode" lights within neighborhoods and other low-speed areas of the city. These low-intensity, steady burning lights enhance the presence of police vehicles, especially during evening hours. Similar lighting is used by law enforcement in larger cities.

Unlike flashing emergency lights accompanied by a siren, which indicates an urgent situation, "cruise mode" lights are steady burning do not signify an emergency. You do not need to stop or yield unless directed by an officer.

Please take the survey below. We are interested to hear your feedback regarding the “cruise mode” lights initiative. Specifically, we want to know if you are aware of the program, if the program is impacting safety, and your overall support for the program. Your feedback will guide our decision on potentially expanding the program citywide.

When you see police lights in your rearview mirror, it can be bad news — but you may not mind seeing these lights being used more on police cruisers.

Patrol vehicles in Fairfax, Virginia, now have what are being called “cruise mode lights.”

“These low-intensity, steady burning lights are designed to enhance the presence of police vehicles, especially during evening hours or in low-light situations,” the City of Fairfax Police Department said in a news release.

Officers will run with these steady burning lights while on patrol, in an effort to increase visibility and safety within neighborhoods and some areas of the city with low posted speed limits.

“Unlike the usual flashing emergency lights, and siren, that indicate an urgent situation, the ‘cruise mode’ lights are steady burning and do not signify an emergency,” the City of Fairfax Police Department said. “There is no need for you to stop or yield unless directed by an officer.”

This police light strategy is being used by other police departments across the country, and, the department said, their effectiveness led to adoption by city police.

“We encourage community members to familiarize themselves with the appearance of these lights,” the department said, in part. “We believe that better visibility will enhance community safety.

A video of the lights has been shared online so that residents can see the difference between them. You can watch that video here .

More police cars have lights on but not flashing. Here’s what it means and what you should do

Trooper steve answers viewer questions.

Steve Montiero , Traffic Anchor

Daniel Dahm , Digital Content Manager

ORLANDO, Fla. – News 6 traffic safety expert Trooper  Steve Montiero  answers viewer questions and shares tips about the rules of the road, helping Central Florida residents become better drivers by being better educated.

On Monday, Trooper Steve fielded this question, “I’ve seen a lot of police cars recently driving with their lights on in a steady on position. What is this about and do I have to move out of the way?”

[TRENDING: What’s next for housing market? | Some Fla. deputies told not to enforce ‘anti-riot’ law | Look up! First supermoon of 2021 ]

Trooper Steve said as technology advances, so does the police car.

“Over the years, the version of police lights on vehicles have advanced from halogen lights to strobe lights to today’s LED style lights,” he said. “With that, the options that police officers have to control the lights have also advanced. The picture provided above gives a perfect example of what this question is addressing.”

Trooper Steve said lights on without flashing is called cruise mode for most police departments.

“It lights up the far corners of a light bar without any type of flash pattern,” he said. “Police officers will activate this while at a scene that is not overly active. This shows a law enforcement presence without the added flash patterns and unneeded attention. You can commonly find this in high-pedestrian areas. For example, we tend to see a lot of this in the International Drive area and the Disney Springs shopping area.”

[VIDEO BELOW: Trooper Steve explains when drivers must have their headlights on]

Trooper Steve said the lights could deter criminal activity because it shows the presence of police, and it allows a person to quickly identify law enforcement, if they need them.

“You can also commonly find this type of activation in residential areas while an officer is on routine patrol,” Trooper Steve said.

You do not need to yield right of way to a police car that has its lights activated in this fashion, but keep in mind, if the light pattern begins to flash and a siren is activated, that is when you would need to move out of the way.

FAIRFAX, Va. (DC News Now) — Police vehicles in the City of Fairfax are kicking off the new year with new “cruise mode” lights.

The City of Fairfax Police Department said in a news release Friday that the new lights are part of an initiative “aimed at increasing public safety and visibility of our officers on patrol.”

The police department said that the “cruise mode” lights are low-intensity and steady burning — unlike the flashing lights and siren that indicate an emergency response and urgent situation.

Police said that if you see a vehicle with “cruise mode” lights on, there is no need to stop or yield unless an officer directs you to do so.

Police cruise lights are back by popular demand

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - Due to an overwhelming response to a survey posted in February, the Wilmington Police Department (WPD) has resumed using the blue cruise lights while police cars are patrolling as of Friday April 30.

WPD receives huge response to cruise lights survey

The police department received over 4,000 responses to the survey. Of those respondents, 97.5% noticed WPD vehicles while traveling throughout the city and 94.5% liked the use of the blue cruise lights.

The lights, which do not flash or move, are located on each side of the light bar on the roof of the vehicle. WPD says this is now the mode for routine patrol and that citizens should not be alarmed. When an officer is conducting a special assignment, the blue lights will not be illuminated.

The standard flashing lights and sirens will still be used during traffic stops or emergencies.

WPD began a one-month trial on January 22 to test a theory that patrolling with the cruise lights on would increase visibility and help deter crime.

SCARBOROUGH — The Scarborough Police Department has decided to make a change on how they will patrol neighborhoods, parking lots, and more. The department has created a new system called the “Cruise Mode.”

In a public safety announcement created on Jan. 18, Officer Steve Thibodea explains the new mode which was created as a way for residents to know officers are out on the street and to help them to feel safer.

When a police officer is rushing to an emergency call or making a traffic stop, blue lights on the top of the car as well as headlights will be flashing.

But with the new “cruise mode,” the corner of the light bar on police cars will emit a solid dim light. The solid, as opposed to flashing, light lets police cars be seen more easily, lets residents know officers are on patrol and on the look out in neighborhoods, parking lots and elsewhere, and hopefully helps residents feel safer, according to police.

“If we are in a parking lot, let’s say Walmart, and we’re cruising around the parking lot you can see that these two blue lights are on or if we are in your neighborhood, we want you to see that these blue lights are on and that we are there for you,” Thibideau said in the video.

“I noticed there was a post by the Scarborough Police Department that they are now going to start riding around neighborhoods with their lights on,” Councilor Jon Anderson said at a Town Council workshop Jan. 19. “What I was hoping when that came out, that it was their response to one of the (community) survey questions.”

The results of the survey indicated that people would like to feel that there is more of a police presence in their neighborhood. The Police Department decide implementing cruise mode would be the best way to let people see that officers are out there patrolling the town.

The Town Council will continue to work on changes that were addressed in the community survey, Anderson said. The council will analyze the survey in greater detail, decide what changes need to be made, and will work with staff and committees to help understand what improvements are needed.

What is cruise mode on police cars for?

Explanation of cruise mode on police cars

Cruise mode refers to the low-power, steady-burn lights that are seen on police cars when they are not actively responding to an emergency. These lights are usually in the authority color for the respective emergency service, such as red or blue. Unlike the flashing lights that are used during emergencies, cruise mode lights are meant to be more subtle and less disruptive to regular traffic flow.

Functions and benefits of cruise mode

Visibility and identification.

One of the main functions of cruise mode is to enhance the visibility of police cars, making them easily identifiable to other drivers on the road. The steady-burn lights help other drivers recognize the presence of law enforcement and, as a result, can lead to increased compliance with traffic laws.

Non-emergency situations

Cruise mode is particularly useful in non-emergency situations where police officers need to maintain a visible presence but do not require the full use of emergency lights and sirens. For example, when an officer is conducting routine patrols or community engagement activities, cruise mode allows them to be seen by the public without causing unnecessary disruption.

Enhanced safety

Another significant benefit of cruise mode is that it contributes to the overall safety of police officers and the general public. By having their lights on, even in non-emergency situations, police cars are more visible to other drivers, which helps reduce the risk of accidents and improves overall road safety.

Utilization of cruise mode

Traffic management.

Cruise mode is often used during traffic management operations, such as controlling traffic flow or managing accident scenes. In these situations, police officers may need to direct traffic or provide a visible presence to deter unsafe driving behaviors. By utilizing cruise mode, officers can effectively fulfill their duties while minimizing disruptions to traffic.

Routine patrols

During routine patrols, police officers drive through neighborhoods and communities to deter crime and maintain public safety. By having their lights on in cruise mode, officers can establish a visible presence and reassure the public that law enforcement is actively patrolling the area. This can help deter criminal activity and foster a sense of security within the community.

Community engagement

Police departments often engage with the community through various events and activities such as parades, fairs, and public gatherings. By using cruise mode, officers can participate in these events without activating their emergency lights, ensuring that they are approachable and accessible to the public. This helps build trust and positive relationships between law enforcement and the community.

Limitations and regulations

Specific rules and guidelines.

While cruise mode is a valuable tool for police officers, its use is subject to specific rules and guidelines. Different jurisdictions may have different regulations regarding when and where cruise mode can be used. Police departments typically have policies in place that dictate when officers should activate and deactivate cruise mode, ensuring that it is used appropriately and within the confines of the law.

Compliance with local laws and jurisdictions

It is essential for police officers to comply with local laws and adhere to jurisdictional regulations when using cruise mode. This includes following speed limits, traffic signals, and other applicable traffic laws. By doing so, police officers set an example for other drivers and maintain the integrity and effectiveness of the cruise mode function.

In conclusion, cruise mode plays a crucial role in police cars and serves several important purposes. It enhances visibility, ensures the safety of both officers and the public, and allows for a visible police presence even in non-emergency situations. Cruise mode is utilized in various scenarios, including traffic management, routine patrols, and community engagement. However, it is essential to remember that its use is regulated by specific rules and guidelines to ensure compliance with local laws and jurisdictions. By understanding the importance and proper utilization of cruise mode, we can appreciate the valuable role it plays in law enforcement.

Johnstown Police getting new patrol lights; when drivers should and should not pull over

by Brock Owens

Johnstown Police car light bar

Johnstown Police Department officials said they are getting a new light setting on their patrol cars.

Officials said it could cause confusion on when drivers should and should not pull over.

Police said they are calling the new lights 'cruise mode.'

Johnstown Police Chief Richard Pritchard said the cruise mode lights will be used when an officer is patrolling the city.

He said the cruise mode lights will be steady, more dim, and only appear on the side of the light bar.

Pritchard warns that unless there are flashing lights and a siren, drivers do not need to pull over.

Police said they hope the upgrade helps reduce the fear of crime and crime itself in Johnstown.

If You See a Scarborough, Maine Police Car’s Lights in ‘Cruise Mode’, Don’t Panic

Nothing quite compares to that feeling of driving along and then all of a sudden you see blue lights in your rearview mirror.

A lot of the time it’s not even a cop!

Sometimes it’s just a light on someone’s personal property or on a business’s LED sign. But that split second of, “OH NO!” is enough to make your heart jump in your chest, sweat, and peek at your speedometer. (Not that I would ever be speeding. Of course not. I’m a perfect law-abiding citizen…)

Well, the Scarborough Police Department has now rolled out a new model on their lightbars and it’s a cruise mode.

They will still have the rapidly moving and flashing blue lights used while in pursuit or trying to get to an emergency, cruise mode will be different.

When cruise mode is on just the farthest two lights on the bar will be on and steady. The intention here is to increase visibility to the public whether they’re patrolling a neighborhood, sitting on the side of the road, or driving around a parking lot.

So the next time you’re headed to Walmart in Scarborough and Scarborough Police are behind you with lights on, don’t panic. Unless, of course, they’re flashing. Then you better pull over.

Officer Steve Thibodeau made a video explaining the new mode and showing the lights as an example so residents and visitors alike will understand.

To see the video CLICK HERE.

It seems like a great change and one that hopefully other local departments will use around the State of Maine in the future. (Even if it might make me panic for a split second.)

It's 'lights on' for Southern Armstrong police cars at night

Joyce Hanz

Motorists traveling in Freeport, Gilpin and Ford City can’t say they didn’t notice the police car anymore.

All seven police cruisers in the Southern Armstrong Regional Police Department’s fleet now travel at night with steady red and blue lights illuminated, a move that officials hope will make police more visible and acts as a deterrent to speeding and other crimes.

“I’m looking for another route to show the public that we’re here versus them saying they don’t see our police cars,” said Southern Armstrong police Chief Chris Fabec of the decision to implement the new light procedure.

The light bars on Southern Armstrong’s fleet were reprogrammed to activate steady red and blue lights during nighttime patrols. The lights, located on each side of the light bars, do not flash or move when in “cruise mode,” Fabec said.

Fabec said he got the idea while he was on a law enforcement-related trip to Maryland. He then connected with Johnstown police Chief Richard Pritchard, whose department started using cruise mode last May.

In Johnstown, cruise mode is used 24/7 in the fleet of 12 patrol cars.

“It makes it look like more cars are out on the street and lets the citizens know we’re out on the street,” Pritchard said.

Pritchard said his department used a news release and a media blitz to let people know that when they see a patrol car with its lights in cruise mode an officer isn’t trying to stop their vehicle.

“Sometimes we have folks pull over, and those officers keep on driving and don’t address it. Nobody has yelled at me yet over this, so I think it’s going OK,” he said.

Cruise mode can be shut off manually by officers when necessary, for example, when operating on an undercover assignment, Pritchard said.

Ohio Township police Chief Joseph Hanny supports cruise-mode lights and permits his officers to use it at their discretion.

The township serves several other municipalities, including Sewickley Hills, Emsworth, Ben Avon and Neville.

“We use cruise lights intermittently, sometimes following school buses or patrolling through neighborhoods. It’s not a standard operating procedure for us, but we promote it. Awareness, being visual, being out there and being seen, that’s the whole point of this,” Hanny said.

Fabec said the reprogramming costs on all of the vehicles amounted to a few hundred dollars. The program launched March 1.

A minimum of three Southern Armstrong Regional patrol cars are on patrol in Freeport, Gilpin and Ford City at any given time.

Sgt. Hunter Tackett works nights for Southern Armstrong Regional and said he welcomes the new light procedure.

“It’s a great thing because it shows the community that we’re out there. Before, we had some unmarked vehicles, and now all of our officers are in a marked vehicle,” he said.

Tackett said he hasn’t experienced any issues with drivers pulling to the side of the road because they thought they were being pulled over. Fabec stressed that motorists should pull over whenever they see flashing police lights or hear sirens behind them.

“People are talking about it, so they’re spreading the word to tell people that those (steady, cruise-mode) lights don’t mean you’re getting pulled over,” Tackett said.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
