I spent an incredible three hours on a Belfast political and mural tour exploring the history of this troubled city. The tour was conducted by ex-prisoners from either side of the divide, which gave a unique insight into “the Troubles”.

The Three Types of Belfast Mural Tours

Although Belfast is a reasonably safe city, wandering around the divided estates of East and West Belfast on your own, camera in tow, might raise a few eyebrows. It is certainly not recommended to visit these areas alone after dark as trouble can and does flare up sporadically.

The best way to witness the murals is with a guided tour, and personally, I found the three-hour “ Conflicting Stories ” tour to be fantastic. The tour is split into two, with the first guide being an ex-prisoner on the Republican side, and the second half with a former Loyalist prisoner.

The other option is a Belfast black taxi tour. These tours take you around both Republican and Loyalist areas to see the murals and peace walls. This is an especially good option if it rains, which unfortunately Northern Ireland has more than its fair share of!

Geography of Belfast and Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland is made up of six counties in the north of the island of Ireland. These provinces are (currently) part of the United Kingdom and not part of the Republic of Ireland.

When the Republic of Ireland broke away from the United Kingdom after the 1922 War of Succession, these six counties remained part of the crown and thus partitioning Ireland.

About the Belfast Murals

The murals in Belfast, on each side of the divide, are some of the most prominent reminders of Northern Ireland’s troubled past. These murals can be seen in areas like the catholic Falls Road and protestant Shankhill Road .

Since the 1970s some 2,000 brightly-coloured paintings have appeared across Northern Ireland, with the most famous of these being located in Belfast and Derry.

These murals depict the culture, struggles and lives of each community in Northern Ireland. Some of the murals depict historical figures, sporting heroes and martyrs to each cause.

Republican Murals

The republican murals depict the Irish struggle for independence and associated figures. There are also many murals painted in solidarity with other political causes around the world from Palestine to Cuba.

There are also murals championing Irish culture, Gaelic sports and so forth.

Loyalist Murals

The loyalist murals, by contrast, show of the solidarity to the UK and celebrate “Queen and Country” as well as figures related to the struggle against the IRA and republicanism.

About the Peace Lines

The so-called Peace Lines are a series of walls and high fences separating the two communities. These walls and fences can be found across areas of the city where both communities live in close proximity.

The primary aim of the Peace Lines is to de-escalate violence and stop attacks on either community. You can see that there are distinct sections that have increased in height over time to stop the throwing of missiles and petrol bombs.

In addition to the peace lines, there are many gates that allow traffic to pass through during the day, but are closed for a curfew every night at 7pm.

Review and Personal Experience of the Conflicting Stories Political Tour

The tour starts off on Divis Street which is about 600 metres northwest of the city centre. It then continues along Divis Street onto the Falls Road to take in different murals there. From there a right turn onto Clonard Avenue to visit Father Alec Reid’s former church and an IRA memorial garden.

It’s then a short walk onto Springfield Road and onto Lanark Way and through the gates and across the Peace Lines. From Lanark, the tour turns onto Cupar Way and follows the wall until turning off onto Lawnbrook Avenue and then the Shankill Road where the tour ends.

The meeting point for the tour was outside a large tower block on Divis Street, less than a kilometre from the city centre. The first half of the tour was to be with an ex-prisoner from the Republican side, presumably a member or former member of the IRA.

Even though we were only a few hundred metres from the centre of Belfast, it was possible to see the large fence of the Peace Lines behind some houses. Republican murals depicting scenes of Gaelic sports adorned some of the walls nearby and an Irish tricolour hung from one of the windows in the tower block.

There were around 20 people on the tour and we were greeted by our first guide; a stocky, bald-headed Republican in his mid to late fifties from West Belfast.

He had served 10 years in Long Kesh Prison (also known as the Maze) for offenses relating to the struggle for Irish independence. Presumably, this meant he was a member of the IRA or a similarly affiliated group. Now he works for a Republican prisoners’ association.

The Falls Road

Our guide started off with a 20-minute talk giving a background to the troubles and outlining each side and what they were fighting for/against. There was a strong wind blowing down from the hills and across the city, making it difficult to hear the guide at times, but thankfully the rain had held off.

We set off west along Divis Street, which then turns into the famous Falls Road; scene of so many street battles with protestants and the British army during the 30 years of the troubles. Now it looks like a normal road in any industrial city, save for the murals, memorials and large fences/walls separating the two communities.

The first large set of murals we came to were painted on the side of what looked to be an old factory. There were paintings celebrating figures from those the republicans sympathised such as Palestine, Cuba and so on. Other paintings depicted Irish prisoners, freedom fighters and martyrs throughout the years.

Bobby Sands Mural

A little further on we came to the famous mural of Bobby Sands; the famous IRA hunger striker and member of Parliament who died from his protest on 5th May 1981. The building was home to Sinn Fein; the republican political party active in both the Republic and Northern Ireland.

Our guide also pointed out the large gates that were currently open letting traffic pass through the two communities, and informed us that these gates close every day at 7 pm and open again at 7 am the following morning, separating both communities at night.

Clonard Cathedral and Father Alec Reid

Next up we visited the Church of the Most Holy Redeemer (also known as Clonard Monastery) on Clonard Street which was part of Father Alec Reid’s diocese.

Father Reid was instrumental in bringing about the peace process thanks to secret negotiations with both sides. He later went on to help broker peace in Spain’s Basque Country and other conflicts across the world.

Clonard Martyrs Memorial

After the church, we moved on to the Clonard Martyrs Memorial , a small red-bricked, gated enclosure and garden dedicated to the fallen volunteers of “C” Company, 2nd Battalion, Belfast Brigade of the IRA.

Our guide explained that these types of memorials are erected in public land and built without permission, knowing that the authorities will not do anything about it in an effort to maintain the peace.

Crossing Communities

We made our ay from Springfield Road onto Lanark Way which separates it from the loyalist Shankhill Road. Here we crossed through heavy mechanised iron and concrete gates that close each night as with the others. We learned that there had been some rioting and petrol bombs thrown at police at this exact spot the previous night (you can read the news report here ).

Once through the gates, we met up with our second tour guide, a loyalist ex-prisoner from the Shankhill Road. Our republican guide exchanged pleasantries with our new guide and I managed to get a photograph of them standing together (with permission of course). I was going to jokingly suggest they give each other a kiss, but thought better of it!

From what I could gather, our new guide seemed to be a former member of the UVF, the Ulster Volunteer Force, a loyalist paramilitary group. He was decked out in blue and white sportswear with a mop of grey hair and a thick Ulster accent.

Belfast Mural Tours – The Peace Lines

We left the dividing gates on Lanark Way and made our way onto Cupar way, which runs adjacent to the peace lines. You can see three distinct sections; the concrete bottom, and then two metal mesh layers that were later added to stop petrol bombs and missiles from being hurled over.

The bottom section of the wall was covered in graffiti, a lot of which has been added by tourists.

The Shankhill Road

The guide led us through a housing estate and out onto the Shankhill Road. We passed houses decked out in Union Jack flags and poppies (it was close to remembrance Sunday) before coming to the Rangers Supporters Club, an outfit for fans of Glasgow Rangers Football Club.

Our guide told us that the previous day, a car with Irish number plates had been torched right outside the club and showed us pictures of the burned-out car from his phone. You can read the news story here .

The first loyalist mural we saw was a large painting on the gable end of a row of houses depicting five men carrying large, automatic weapons. The five men were all members of UVF – C COY from West Belfast.

Next, we visited the site of a former fish and chip shop that had been bombed by the IRA on 23rd October 1993. The blast killed ten people, including the bomber, a member of the UDA and eight protestant civilians, including two children.

IRA Victims Memorial

Our guide then explained that we would be visiting a memorial to the victims of the IRA and that behind the memorial was an enclosure with a lot of graphic photographs. The pictures displayed victims of various bomb blasts and so forth. He warned that the pictures were not for the faint of heart and that we were free to view or pass it by as we wished.

I didn’t notice anyone stay outside and everyone entered the area behind the memorial. As we had been warned, there were many graphic pictures detailing the devastating effects of IRA bombs.

There were also many news headlines and what can only be described as propaganda. One piece that sticks in my mind is a headline screaming “ISIS and IRA are No Different!” or something along those lines.

It was a stark contrast to the memorials across the fence and I can’t help but feeling it was not particularly respectful of the victims.

Walking back into central Belfast

The tour ends on the Shankhill Road and it’s a ten-minute walk back into the centre of Belfast.

I can highly recommend this as one of the best Belfast mural tours thanks to the unique perspectives given by each tour guide.

So is it not safe to walk around the various estates of Belfast, Derry/Londonderry, and other places in Northern Ireland taking pictures of the various paramilitary murals with my parents during the day?

I really want to see the paramilitary murals and peace lines before they’re gone. I don’t want to get hurt though. Obviously the tour guide can’t show my parents and I all the murals that I want to see.

Do you think my parents and I would be safe walking around the various estates taking pictures of the murals during the day?

Also, when do you think is the best time to go to Northern Ireland? Everything I read says something different. I want to go as soon as possible, but I don’t want to be freezing or drenched in rain. Some things say June and August is the best time to go. Other things say May to October.

I also don’t want to go during Marching Season. I don’t want to miss any murals that are on closed off areas due to parades and clashes.

I understand your concerns, and that is exactly why I did this tour, so that I wouldn’t be walking around the estates on my own snapping pictures. It’s fine to walk around the Shankhill and Falls roads during the day, where the Peace Lines and a lot of the murals are. I personally wouldn’t wander round the estates on my own, but I think during the day you’re unlikely to encounter any trouble.

I went in October last year and the weather was so/so. Rained for some of the time, but it wasn’t cold. I’d try and go as soon as possible if I were you. Spetmeber should be quite pleasant.

Stop 2 Peace Walls

The peace walls were designed to separate the Catholic (Nationalist) and Protestant (Unionist) populations in Belfast. The first ‘peace lines’ were erected, following the outbreak of violence in 1969 in Northern Ireland. They were built as temporary structures, meant to last only six months. Due to their effective nature they were built higher, longer, and made permanent and are still here today. The peace walls are adorned with art and messages of hope from tourists.

Stop 3 Falls Road Murals

You will visit Clonard Martyrs Memorial garden in Bombay Street in the black taxi cab tour. Bombay Street in Belfast is where some say the modern troubles began when Catholics were burnt out of their homes. This is also where the Provisional IRA was formed. Each section of this garden will be explained in detail and the reasons it exists. You will hear about the history of Bobby Sands and the Irish hunger strike in the Maze Prison in 1981.

What is the duration of the Murals Tour?

Typically, a tour of the murals will last for around 60 minutes. 

How much does the Tour cost?

The Mural tour starts from £60 for 1-2 people, with an addition of £30 for each person thereafter. Children under 16 cost £15 each and children under 10 travel free with an adults ticket. 

Additional children are £15 and under 10s are free.

Please note each vehicle has a maximum of 6/7 seats, larger groups will be split across multiple vehicles. The minimum charge per vehicle is £60.

What type of vehicle will I get?

We use a range of different vehicles for our tours. All vehicles are registered taxis and your tour will be in either a authentic London Black Taxis which have a capacity of 6 seats and modern MPV’s seating capacity of 7, or a regular taxi depending on your group size.

Can you facilitate large group bookings?

Yes, we can facilitate large group bookings on request.

Accessibility and Wheel Chairs.

The tour does involve some walking and getting in and out of the vehicle - especially to get up close to the Murals and into Clonard Monastery. Some of the Taxis we use are wheelchair accessible.

You can request a vehicle that is suitable for wheelchairs, on the payment page you can enter your request in the Special Requests box and the vendor will their best to accommodate this. For any special requests we do recommend booking early.

Is this a private tour?

Yes. Your booking is for your group only. When you have a group over 6/7 people, we split this over multiple vehicles that travel together.

Do you offer a free pick up service?

We can collect you for your taxi tour free from The Leonardo Hotel (formerly Jurys Hotel) in Belfast city centre  For an additional cost, we can collect you from Titanic Belfast, from both Belfast airports or the Cruise ship terminal. We do not offer pickup outside these areas, for connections into Belfast you can use Translink services or private hire taxis. Please note pickup locations can only be changed with 24 hours notice before your tour start by calling the vendor at additonal cost.

Coming to Belfast on a Cruise ship? We can pick you up from the Cruise Ship* or in the City Centre. For only £25 for Cruise Ship Pickup means your driver will be waiting for you when you arrive. You can also specify if you'd like a Cruise Ship drop off for an additional £25. Jurys hotel City Centre pickup and drop-off is free. For a return journey please add x2 of each option required. Please enter the cruise ship name into the Special Request box when selecting the Cruise Ship option.

Coming to Belfast via the George Best City or International Airports? We can collect you or drop you off at the Airport after your tour. • If at the time of pickup there are more people in your group than on your booking, you will be required to pay £30 per person directly to the driver.

• If your booking has more than 6 people it will be split across multiple taxis that travel together at no additional cost to you. Please note that there must be at least one booking @ £60 per vehicle.

Belfast Cruise Port

Port Belfast is Northern Ireland’s largest cruise port and consists of three main docking locations: Stormont Wharf, Pollock Dock, and New Belfast Cruise Ship Terminal. See the Belfast cruise schedule

• Stormont Wharf  is dedicated to larger cruise liners and is located on Stormont Road approximately 2 miles (3.2 km) from the Belfast city center.
• Pollock Dock can accommodate smaller cruise vessels and is located closer to the city center, around 1.5 miles (2.5 km) from the downtown.

These terminals have facilities that include basic passenger assistance, a tourist information center, a gift shop, and parking for taxis/tour buses.

Since 2019, there has been a new cruise terminal D3 ( Cruise Ship Terminal Belfast ) located on Airport Road on the outskirts of the harbour, close to the George Best Belfast City Airport, approximately 3.5 miles (5.6 km) from the city center.

With its 340-meter-long quay, this terminal is designed to accommodate the world’s largest cruise ships. When there are no passenger ships in port and off-season, this terminal is used for cargo and container ships. There is a small terminal building housing a tourist information center where you can get city maps and brochures. A taxi rank, tour buses, and parking are available outside the terminal.

The port of Belfast is also one of the largest ferry ports serving the routes to Douglas (Isle of Man), Liverpool (England), Birkenhead (England), Cairnryan (Scotland), and a few other ports depending on the season. The majority of ferries are operated by Stena Line, one of the largest ferry companies in the world.

Getting Around & Local Transportation

• Belfast city center is small and can be easily explored on foot.
• The cruise lines normally offer a convenient shuttle service to the Belfast Welcome Center (visitor information centre) on Donegall Square North, located opposite the Belfast City Hall. Tickets should be purchased onboard the ship. A 5-minute walk from there is Victoria Square Shopping Centre, one of the best places for shopping in the city.
• The taxi station is located next to the terminal building. A ride to Belfast city center takes 10 minutes.
• As for public transport , it is available however I will not encourage you to use it as the buses don’t run very often and the closest stop is at the port gate, which is quite a fair walking distance from the dock.
• Belfast’s main railway station is Lanyon Place Train Station (formerly Belfast Central), located near the city center, approximately a 10-minute drive from the cruise terminal. You’ll find the timetables and fares at https://www.translink.co.uk/
• Hiring a bicycle is a fast and cheap way to get around the city since the city is not very big. Belfast Bikes rental has more than 40 pick-up and drop-off points throughout the city. You can rent them for the hour or the day.
• If you want to go sightseeing, Belfast Hop on Hop off bus runs from City Hall and covers stops at the major city highlights including Titanic Dock and Visitor Center, St George’s Market, Ulster Museum, Botanic Gardens, Belfast Castle, and others. The cathedral is located around a 10-minute walk north of the City Hall. It is fully wheelchair accessible.

3. Belfast Castle

Built in the late 12th century by the Normans, the castle was located within the city of Belfast, but after suffering a fire in 1708, only the names of some streets remained that indicate that it was there before. Instead of rebuilding it in the same place, its owners preferred to go to the outskirts of the city and built the new Belfast Castle on the slopes of Cavehill Country Park. The new castle was completed in 1870.

Today the magnificent castle is a private center where banquets, weddings, meetings, and other large events are held. On the castle’s grounds, you can find a beautiful garden and park, an adventure playground, a gift shop, a restaurant, and a visitor center.

The castle is located a 15-minute drive from the port Belfast. To get to Belfast Castle, you can take public bus #1 from Upper Queen Street (located one block away from the City Hall) to Newtownabbey Serpentine Road and from there you need to walk 10 minutes to Belfast Castle.

4. Titanic Museum

Located in the Titanic Quarter, the same place where the Titanic was built in 1912, this museum is one of the icons of Belfast and one of the main tourist attractions of the city. This gigantic museum opened its doors in 2012 and is completely dedicated to the history of the ship. In 2016, the museum was crowned the best world tourist attraction by the World Travel Awards.

The tour of the museum is an authentic experience that allows you to access over nine galleries where you get to learn about Titanic myths and reality, its launch, Maiden Voyage, and tragic destiny. The driving distance between any of the Belfast cruise terminals and the Titanic Museum is approximately 7 – 10 minutes. If you are coming from the city center to the museum, the distance is approximately 2 miles and takes about 25 minutes on foot.

You can also take bus #94 from Wellington Place in the city center to Odyssey Pavilion, and then a 10-minute walk to the Titanic Museum. It is strongly recommended to purchase tickets in advance as you need to select specific times for the visit.

5. Belfast Mural Tour

If you are visiting Belfast, don’t miss the opportunity to visit its famous murals. These mainly represent the history of Northern Ireland during the last decades of the 20th century, a period known as “The Troubles”, one of the most tragic periods in European history at the turn of the century.

The tradition of political murals in Belfast dates back to 1908 when images of King William III began to be painted. This king is highly acclaimed by Protestants due to his victory over the Catholics at the Battle of Boyne in 1690. The murals were not usually permanent and they changed over time, reflecting the political problems of the moment. This is still the case today.

There are about 2000 murals scattered throughout Belfast, but it is in the Falls and Shankill neighborhoods that the most famous are found.

You can tour the murals on foot, but you will need time and desire to walk since the murals are separated from each other. Hiring a taxi is probably the most comfortable and quickest way to do it. A local taxi driver will take you around the main points of these neighborhoods and explain to you the symbols of the murals and what the different murals represent. The Belfast Hop on Hop off buses also stop at some areas where these famous murals are located.

6. St George’s Market

If your ship docks in Belfast on the weekend, then this is the place to visit if you want to enjoy local cuisine and crafts. Among the stalls of this colorful 19th-century indoor market, you can find practically everything – from fresh fruit and fish to antique items, handmade gifts, and original works by local artists.

The market has numerous places where you can enjoy delicious street food, fresh smoothies, local sweets and so much more. On Sundays, they have live music by local bands. St George’s Market is located in the heart of the city, less than a 10-minute walk from the City Hall and the shuttle bus drop-off point. Hop on Hop off buses also stops at the market.

7. Botanic Gardens

The elaborate public garden was born as a private Royal Belfast Botanical Garden in 1828 and was opened to the public in 1895. It covers 28 acres, and its main feature is an elegant domed conservatory known as “The Palm House”, a greenhouse that can be visited and where you can see various types of tropical plants.

The Botanical Gardens is located around 1.2 miles away from the city center and its City Hall, approximately 25 minutes on foot. A taxi ride from City Hall lasts 5 minutes. Gardens are wheelchair accessible and there are benches all around for visitors will walking difficulties.

8. The Ulster Museum

Situated in the same park as the Botanical Gardens, the Ulster Museum is the largest in Northern Ireland featuring rich collections of art, archeological findings, scientific artifacts, and the treasures of the Spanish Invincible Armada.

Here, visitors can explore 9000 years of Irish culture and history and learn about its turbulent history, traditions and ethnography. Within the museum, there are also zoological, geological, and botanical collections. The entrance is free of charge and provides easy access and exploration for wheelchair users.

9. Giant’s Causeway

You cannot leave Northern Ireland without having visited this natural wonder and one of the biggest tourist attractions in Northern Ireland.

According to the legend, the origin of the Giant’s Causeway is due to two giants, an Irish one named Finn MacCool and a Scottish giant named Bennandoner. They fought each other throwing stones until so many of them were thrown that they formed a path between Ireland and the island of Staffa. Bennandoner crossed it intending to kill Finn, but his wife had the idea of ​​dressing him as a baby. So when Bennandoner arrived and saw such a big baby, he imagined that the baby’s father would be much bigger, so he ran back stomping so hard that he destroyed the stone path they had created leaving only what we can see today.

Declared a World Natural Heritage by UNESCO and a national nature reserve, Giant’s Causeway is one of the strangest geological phenomena on the planet and a unique landscape that you cannot miss. There are two ways to experience the Giant’s Causeway: visit the stones or take a stunning 5-mile (2.5 hours) hike along the thrilling clifftop path.

Clifftop Experience Walk departs from the ruins of Dunseverick Castle along the coastline to the Giant’s Causeway. This experience is recommended for visitors in good health conditions and fitness levels. Wear non-slippery shoes and bring a light jacket .

How to Get to Giant’s Causeway from Belfast Cruise Port?

• Distance from the port of Belfast to the Giant’s Causeway is approximately 62 miles (100 km), about a 1h 30-minute drive each way. The best way to get there is definitely on an organized shore excursion considering the distance and your time in port. I strongly suggest you book this tour in advance because it sells out quickly.
• If you decide to get there on your own, will need to take train 3 from Lanyon Place train station to Coleraine train station, and then hop on bus 402 or 172 to Giant’s Causeway. The journey by train itself takes 1.5 hours, but overall (with a bus and a walking portion included), it can take up to 3 hours each way. Therefore, it’s not recommended for cruise passengers.
• You can also hire a taxi from the port of Belfast, or book a private round-trip transfer which might be a cheaper option.

10. The Crown Liquor Saloon

This gastropub is one of the oldest pubs in Belfast and is worth stopping by for a pint or a succulent meal. The building was built in the Victorian style and is known for its rustic wooden interior decoration featuring carved mahogany booths, etched glass, and gas lamps from the 1800s. It is the most famous pub in Belfast and today it has become one of the symbols of the city because it’s the only pub in the country to be declared a national monument. The pub is located in the heart of the city, only 5 minutes walking distance from the City Hall.
