Generally, late June to mid-October is the best time to visit Rocky Mountain National Park.

Local Tip: This is when Trail Ridge Road is open (generally) and you can access all areas of the park.

In the summer and early fall, the park will be extremely crowded, and you will have to make a timed entry reservation (see below), but you will also have lovely weather and could see wildflowers in bloom or beautiful fall foliage.

In the winter, the park is especially gorgeous in the snow, and snowshoeing in RMNP is a fantastic experience.

But avalanche conditions may exist on hikes, and Trail Ridge Road is closed, so you won’t be able to drive from the east to west side of the park.

WHEN TO HIKE Rocky Mountain National Park

The Colorado Rockies offer phenomenal year-round outdoor adventure. However, from a strictly hiker perspective, the best times of year are summer and fall. Summer is the peak season. Mosquitoes in Colorado do not tend to be very bad, which opens up the entire summer to trekking opportunities, unlike the northern mountains Wyoming and Montana, where the mosquitoes make backpacking in July hit and miss in terms of comfort and difficulty. Colorado also thaws out more quickly than its northern siblings and so the “summer” begins earlier. Great hikes can be had beginning in June and the wonderful summer temperatures last through August. In September, fall begins to creep in, and with it a truly magical transformation in Colorado. With massive elk herds, the bulls of which bugle in the fall as part of their mating rituals, and vast Aspen stands that turn deep yellow, orange and red, fall is truly a spectacular time of year to hike the Rockies. By early to mid November the mountains are becoming less hospitable, but for the hardier backcountry travelers, this time of year is still prime time. By mid November winter is normally setting in and the backcountry becomes a home for winter recreational enthusiasts, sleeping bears, and hardy mountain creatures.

PREPARING FOR YOUR Rockies TRIP

First, be sure you’re physically prepared for the trip you’ve signed up for. That means hitting the gym or exercising outdoors several days per week in the months leading up to your vacation. We heartily recommend the Stairmaster as a fantastic training tool for hikers. Additionally, you’ll want to be acclimatized for the higher elevations of the mountains. Plan on arriving a couple days early and spending some time in Denver or Estes Park so your body can produce additional red blood cells that are required at higher elevations. Finally, hydrate hydrate hydrate! Especially at altitude you can easily become dehydrated, but also because Colorado is a dry climate. If you’re coming from a most climate, your body may become rapidly dehydrated if you’re not drinking plenty of liquids. Finally, mix some electrolyte mix in with your water to avoid hyponatremia , which happens when you exercise and drink lots of water without salt and other minerals your body needs.

Have you always wanted to see a Bighorn Sheep in the winter or Moose in the summer? On a Rocky Mountain National Park Wildlife Tour we can guide you to the best wildlife sightings, teach you their behaviors and give you a view into their lives. Rocky Mountain wildlife we often see include American Elk, Mule Deer, Bighorn Sheep, Moose, Yellow-bellied Marmots, American Pika, Coyotes and birds like Steller's Jays, Mountain Bluebirds, Black-billed Magpies, Common Raven, Bald Eagle and so many more.

Wildlife Tours involve a good bit of driving throughout the park, a number of stops, and generally only a few minor walks as we explore Rocky Mountain National Park and Estes Park for animal encounters. When we find wildlife, we will generally park the vehicle and get out if its safe. Some sightings are very close, others may be so far we can only see them through the spotting scope.

Most large animals, especially Elk and Moose, are most active near dawn or dusk, so morning tours will start before sunrise, and evening tours finish after dark. Start times account for the drive time so we get amazing animal sightings.

Summer Tours starting in late May, we will likely drive over Trail Ridge Road, to 12,183 ft and back to find wildlife.

Spring and Fall Wildlife Tours follow the animals as they migrate through the Estes Park region and may spend less time in the National Park.

Winter Wildlife Tours will spend about half of the tour in Rocky Mountain National Park where Bull Elk, Mule Deer, and Coyote roam the wintering grounds. The other half of the tour we will explore the Estes Park region, some days including Devils Gulch and Dry Gulch for more elk, the Big Thompson Canyon for Bighorn Sheep, and the foothills for Prairie Dogs and birds of prey.

Mid morning there is a building cloud layer and by mid day the entire sky is cloudy as the afternoon thunderstorms build. Usually by 4:30 to 6pm those storms pass and more than half of the time evenings clear just before golden hour offering great light and less crowds after the storm.

Winter Photo Tours are more likely to have a risk of clouds blocking the peaks and grand views on roughly half of winter days from November until April. If we plan for grand views and the weather doesn't cooperate we can target either winter wildlife or intimate landscape scenes of snow covered trees and the like.

Best of Rocky Tours Main Goal: Experience Rocky Mountain landscape vistas, nature, subalpine lakes and forests, Alpine Tundra, waterfalls and more. We may see a few animals long the way but the focus is the best views and nature Rocky Mountain National Park has to offer.

Summer Best of Rocky Tours: On a Best of Rocky Tour we have the whole park to explore from the lowest 8,000 foot elevation glacial valleys, to the highest continunusly paved highway in the continential United States, Trail Ridge Road, driving over 12,183 feet.

Best of Rocky Tours focus on an overview of Rocky Mountain National Park and visiting the best views and special ecosystems of the park. We'll visit locations including Bear Lake, and travel Trail Ridge Road.

Nature Tours focus more on "Nature Walks", diving deep into the science of the national park and relying on your particular interests in the natural world. Hiking Tours Main Goal: Experience the grandure of Rocky Mountain National Park on foot.

Summer Rocky Mountain National Park Hiking Tours: Our most heart pumping Rocky Mountain National Park Tours are Hiking Tours. We depart Estes Park in the early morning to avoid crowds and thunderstorms. We can explore glacial valleys and lakes on an easy 2 mile round trip hike to Dream Lake and Nymph Lake, to very hard all-day 10 to 15 mile hiking tours to Rocky Mountain National Park's more remote lakes and summits like Flattop Mountain. Guided Hikes provide access and timing so you have a great hike without having to worry about getting a parking spot and keeping the trail. Along the way we will point out great features of geology, ecology, and nature.

Winter Hiking and Snowshoeing Tours often have variable conditions day to day. Ice packed trails one day where snowshoes would be dangerous to use, and the next day it can snow making snowshoes a must. In the last few years Winter Hiking with Ice Cleats and Hiking Poles, starts in late October going through early December when the snow starts to really pile up. Snowshoeing season, with it's lovely soft powdery snow, runs from December until February. Once it starts to warm again in March we transition back to Winter Hiking to stay safe as wet heavy snow will cling to Snowshoes making travel hard and dangerous.

Tours are designed for adults and have a strict age 12 and up policy. Kids 14 and over enjoy the experience most due to the science being presented at a high school and college level. If your kids are under 16 please read the Safari FAQ to make sure this tour is for your family.

All tours start and end in Estes Park, Colorado. We will pick you up at your Estes Park hotel or meet at a central Estes Park location if you are renting a private home. If you are staying outside of town you will need your own transporation to Estes Park from Denver, Boulder, or the ski towns. It is always best to rent a car.

Winter is a great time to visit Grand Lake and Rocky Mountain National Park. The snow covered mountains are beautiful and the park is definitely not crowded. The temperature might be cold, but the air is dry and the sun at high altitude is intense, and so it does not feel as cold as the thermometer says.  Many birds and wildlife can be seen from the road.

Moose ( Alces alces ) are common in the Grand Lake area of Rocky Mountain National Park. They are the largest member of the deer family, but unlike most deer family species, moose are solitary and only occasionally are found in small groups. Their favorite food is aquatic plants, but in the winter, they will browse on the bark and shoots of willows and aspen. Males can weigh up to 1,500 pounds and have antler widths of over 4 feet wide. Moose have long and strong legs and can handle very deep snow.

Snowshoe Hare ( Lepus americanus) is one of the many rabbit species found in Rocky Mountain National Park. In the winter their fur turns completely white, while in the summer they are brown, but their feet often remain white. In the winter, the most common set of animal tracks to be seen are those of snowshoe hares. Hares are in the Leporidae (rabbit) Family, which includes hares and rabbits, and they are closely related to picas; they are all in the Lagamorpha Order. Within the Rabbit Family, "hares and jackrabbits are distinct from "cottontail rabbits". The young of cottontail rabbits are born helpless, eyes closed, and without fur. Whereas jackrabbits and hares can fend for themselves in a few hours. Snowshoe Hares can have up to 4-litters a year, with each litter having 3 - 8 young.

Coyote ( Canis latrans ) is an important animal for the Native American tribes of the southwest. Coyotes are believed to be “tricksters”. Tricksters are characters that possess superior intellect and secret knowledge and use their abilities to rebel against social norms and conventional behavior using humor and “tricks”. Coyotes vary in size: In the deserts they might weigh only 20 lbs, but in colder climates, they can weigh up to 40 lbs. Coyotes can be tamed as pups, but the fully grown adults will occasionally engage in destructive and "wild" behavior, and so they cannot be domesticated.

American Pine Marten ( Martes americana ) is member of the weasel family (Mustelidae) and resides mainly in Canada, and mountainous and northern regions of the United States. Martens are long and slender, averaging 2-feet in length, (including a 6-inch tail), and usually weigh about 3 lbs. Although they are omnivores, their diet consists mainly of small rodents, including snowshoe hares. The Pine Marten's main predators are eagles, owls, lynx, and mountain lions. Martens spend a significant amount of time in trees; females will even den and give birth in "cavity nests" and dense limbs in large conifers and snags. Martens are both nocturnal and diurnal hunters, depending on the season.

While Denver certainly has a lot to offer, if you want to explore the “real” Colorado – the rugged, expansive landscapes and all – then you’re on the right track.

The Rocky Mountain National Park and Estes Park Tour from Denver will take you on a fascinating day trip to see some of the top sites the state boasts. Clocking in at 8 hours long, you’ll even be back in time for dinner!

Similar to the other 2 tours we’ve covered so far, this one will also take you to both Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park. However, there’s only one pickup option, which is at Denver Union Station.

You and your group will start off at 8:15 am so you’ll be back to your hotel before dinnertime. That’s pretty crazy when you consider all of the sights you’re going to see!

The guides are so knowledgeable, funny, and just overall very entertaining. You can count on them making just about anything an adventure, and they make it easy to retain information with how they present stories.

Not to mention, they’re very safe drivers which is important when driving in the mountains. You really can just relax and enjoy the view in the 12-passenger Ford Transit touring van, which is smooth and spacious.

On your way to the parks, you’ll drive through downtown Boulder and get to see the University of Colorado Boulder Campus and Pearl Street. Downtown is quite charming, with a lot of brick buildings, fresh air, and lots of delicious food.

Next, enter the national park, where you’ll get to start out by checking out the Beaver Meadows Visitor Center. The center is as informative as it is entertaining, with captivating exhibits and a knowledgeable staff. Then, walk down some trails outside where you’re likely to see some wildlife around the mountain peaks.

Depending on what your group chooses to do, you’ll take a stroll around either Bear Lake or Sprague Lake – both of which are gorgeous and come from the surrounding mountains’ runoff. If you’re going in the winter, you’ll even be provided with some snowshoes for a safer, more effective walk.

The Many Parks Curve Overlook is fascinating, with views as far as the eye can see. Waterfalls and rivers are next, and around the water you’ll likely see Bighorn Sheep or Moose!

After, take a leisurely walk around downtown Estes Park which offers charming little artisan shops and enjoy a delicious lunch.

Are you the kind of person who enjoys coffee, delicious food, and the great outdoors? We sure hope so, because the Private Rocky Mountain National Park Tour from Denver or Estes Park is all that and more!

This one is a bit different from the others, in that you’re going to explore Lyons/Estes Park, and the vast national park.

This 8-hour tour makes sure you make the most of the excursion, with round-trip transport from either Denver, Boulder, or Estes Park. Of course, depending on the option you choose your pickup times will differ but all will be in the morning.

Your ride is a Sprinter van that fits up to 11 people, making it great for larger families or groups of people traveling together.

Your guide/driver will be very entertaining and informative, making for a great time from the very beginning. Your first stop will be at the town of Lyons, located in Boulder.

This somewhat “hip” town is a hotspot for music enthusiasts – particularly bluegrass, folk, and alternative genres. Stop for some fresh coffee and local snacks before continuing on to downtown Estes Park for further sightseeing!

Arrive next at the expansive Rocky Mountain National Park, which is one of the most popular in the nation. Its glaciers, rich forests, and incomparable overlooks from thousands of feet up are certainly awe-inspiring.

Your guide will tell you all about the history of the area, and allow for plenty of stops to take photos and rest. The crowd favorite seems to be the Many Parks Curve Overlook, which has views of various 14,000-foot peaks.

Take some time to check out the Alpine Visitor Center as well, which has great exhibits, an interesting gift shop, and a café.

5. Hiking Adventure in Rocky Mountain National Park from Denver

Perhaps the other tours sound interesting to you, but you’re looking for a tour that focuses more on being active. If so, then check out the Hiking Adventure in Rocky Mountain National Park from Denver tour . This 8-hour tour is pretty self-explanatory, that consists of an easy to moderate, 4-mile hike that’s great for most activity levels.

If you’re trying to stay active while in Denver, this is a much better alternative than just heading to the gym. Meet up with your driver/guide at Denver Union Station, located in the city center. Alternatively, they also offer pickups in Boulder as it is along the way.

Your first stop will be in the vibrant town of Lyons, which is known for its great local music scene and natural beauty.

Here, you’ll have some time to grab a fresh coffee and a bite to eat before heading to Estes Park. At Estes Park, the main attraction for many is getting to see The Stanley Hotel. This ominous location is not only famous for its part in ‘The Shining’, but its ghost stories aside from that!

Next, is the Rocky Mountain National Park, where you’ll partake in a guided hike. This hike is made more for people who are beginners or intermediates in hiking, making it great for all ages and experience levels! Even if you’re an advanced hiker, you’re sure to still appreciate the stunning views!

Your guide will be able to answer just about any question that you throw their way, offering interesting stories about the region and its history.

Denver Tour Guide

Getting there –.

Getting to Denver from within the US is very easy and with so many different options, you’re sure to find something that works for you.

Air – Did you know that Denver International Airport is the 3 rd -busiest airport in the US if you can believe it! With a whopping 24 airlines operating in and out of it, no matter where you’re located you’ll find a good route. Not only that, but their airport makes it easy to get to the city center with the public train that has a stop there. There are always cabs and rideshares available, too.

Amtrak – The California Zephyr line actually makes a stop right in the center of Denver, at their beautiful Union Station. Running daily, they start in San Francisco but make stops in various other cities around the US.

Car – Driving to Denver is possible from anywhere within the continental US, and for those located on the Western side of the country is quite easy to do. Thanks to its somewhat-central location within the west, driving may be a preferable option for some travelers.

Getting Around –

Getting around Denver is also very easy. In fact, we’d be willing to bet that it has some of the best public transportation in the country.

Driving – If you’re going to drive to Denver, that’s not a problem. Driving here is very easy, and we noticed that there isn’t usually too much traffic. The streets are well-maintained, even in the older neighborhoods. They’re wide, and the drivers overall are respectful. However, parking downtown is very expensive, so if you’re going to be traveling around this area you may want to explore other options.

Buses – The city has over a thousand city buses with more than an impressive 10,000 local stops in 8 different counties. If you’re looking to head to the airport or suburbs to/from downtown, grabbing a bus is probably the easiest way. They make getting to just about any part of Denver a breeze, and we found the buses clean and well-maintained and they run 365 days a year!

Light Rail – The light rail, part of Denver’s Regional Transportation District (RTD), consists of 12 different lines that cross not only Denver, but Boulder and some other areas! While it does depend on the specific line, day, and time of day, you can expect each train to run every 15 to 30 minutes. Make sure to check the schedules and routes online – also to see the fees as they do vary.

Scooters – Electric scooters have exploded in popularity over the last few years, and are currently one of the most popular way that locals navigate Denver. They’re meant to be used in the bike lane, and can go pretty fast! You’ll see both Lyft and Lime scooters all over the city, usually available for around 30 cents a minute. If traveling short distances, it’s a nice alternative to walking and will get you where you need to go faster.

Lyft/Uber/Taxi – These are all available all over Denver, but they can add up quickly if you’re just relying on them or if you’re traveling longer distances. However, for the times when the light rail or bus isn’t available it’s a great option to have.

Where to Stay –

The great thing about Denver is that there really is something for everyone. Whether you’re looking for a busy city life that never stops, or quiet, calm suburbs, you can find that here.

Union Stations/Lower Downtown – If it’s your first time in Denver, or if you really want to see as much as possible, we highly recommend staying in lower downtown. Thanks to Union Station reopening in 2014, it makes traveling anywhere around the city a breeze. Oh, and if you love checking out incredible restaurants, boutiques, and bars, then this is the place to be. However, it is a bit more expensive than the rest of the city.

Five Points/RiNo – This neighborhood is just north of Union Station, making it still very conveniently located. This one is almost like the “Brooklyn” of Denver, with all kinds of trendy clubs, breweries, and interesting food options like markets are available. If you’re a foodie or super into nightlife, you may just prefer it over lower downtown. However, it is notably noisy on the weekends due to loud music coming from bars.

Cherry Creek – Do you like luxury? Then Cherry Creek is hard to beat. It’s known for luxe residential units, massive shopping complexes, and wide streets that are perfect for strolling around. Not to mention, it’s overall quiet and you won’t have to deal with struggling to find parking. However, it’s not close to much of anything else and if you aren’t driving you’ll definitely have to grab an Uber/Lyft everywhere.

Central Business District – If you’re heading here for business or a convention, you may find this the best area to stay in. Skyscrapers, shuttles, the Denver Convention Center, and all kinds of events are found here. However, if you’re into nightlife you’ll likely find this option a bit boring as once business hours are over it goes quiet.

Capitol Hill – Why does it feel like every neighborhood named Capitol Hill is like this one? Older, beautiful residential homes, contrasting more “edgy” areas like tattoo parlors, liquor stores, and bars are what this one boasts. It’s known to be a bit more “hipster” and is awesome if you’re looking for an entertaining area to stay on a budget. Not only that, is it’s still quite close to downtown and the CBD.

Restaurants and Eating Out –

If you’re a foodie, you’re sure to enjoy the Mile High City. Let’s break things down by meal so you have a better idea of what Denver has to offer your taste buds.

Breakfast – There are a ton of people who have moved to Denver from Mexico, and that’s evident in the local cuisine. El Taco de Mexico is simply the best if you’re recovering from a long plane ride or a long night. Their egg-and-chorizo burritos are serious lifesavers! Other great options are the huevos con machaca and La Machaca de Mi Amá. If you’re looking for a lighter option, try a red bean bun with a matcha latte at Tokyo Premium Bakery. We’re also big fans of “ Onefold” , which is sublimely “Denver” with their Bacon Fried Rice bowls, and all kinds of meat-heavy to veggie options.

Lunch – Listen, we’re going to recommend Mexican food in Denver, no matter what the meal is. So, aside from Kiké’s Red Tacos, Denver also has some great pizza (of all different styles!). For Neapolitan, try Marco’s Coal-Fired, or White Pie for Connecticut Style. If you’re trying to stick to a healthier diet, we love The Turtle Boat ! Delicious poke always seems super fresh here, and you can indulge without the extra calories or feeling sluggish afterward. We can’t recommend the frybread and curry at Tocabe if you’re really feeling hungry!

Dinner – Inspired by the NYC neighborhood, Greenwich is trendy, and your ultimate “hipster” dining spot. Pizza with Brussels sprouts, bacon marmalade, and lemon relish are just some notable details we really liked. However, their cocktails are unique, “crafty”, and pair perfectly with their dishes. For an interesting take on Mexican food, check out Cantina Loca. From their perfectly-sweet pulque to cactus tempura, you’re sure to find something here you haven’t tried before. Three Saints Revival is a pan-Mediterranean spot, “celebrating old and new world wines”. Despite being beverage-forward, it’s great for grabbing some pork belly with saffron-pickled apples or scallops.

Nightlife and Entertainment –

Denver has a pulsing, lively nightlife and you can find just about anything here.

Bars – If you’re going downtown, you have to check out their bars. 54thirty Rooftop and Le Mèridien Hotel are both some of the top options, with amazing views high up of the city. The open-air spots make them ultra-busy during the warmer months and are perfect to start off the night with. Howl at The Moon is a blast, and people here are looking to really party and have a good time.

Alternatively, if you’re looking for a calmer, casual spot, check out Appaloosa Grill which throws it back to the American west. Oh, and we can’t forget Union lodge No.1 , which is great for a date, as it’s an intimate speakeasy with strong, 19 th -century-inspired cocktails.

Clubs – Denver has some of the best clubs in the country, especially if you’re into electronic music. Glow Lounge is beautiful and overall such a good vibe. With the glowing parts of the venue, it is great to dance a bit here and meet some locals as everyone seems so friendly and in a good mood. If you’re just looking to dance and don’t have a particular genre in mind, “Your Mom’s House” has everything from jazz and soul to techno and house, to Latin and Reggae.

Temple Nightclub is known for having some of the best DJs in the world (mostly mainstream/EDM). SoCo Nightlife District consists of 6 popular venues: The Church, Club Vinyl, City Hall, Milk Bar, Living Room, and Bar Standard. They all take production and talent seriously, and you’re sure to have a good time here. Oh, and there are plenty of underground warehouse events going around the city if you’re into techno!

Breweries – Denver is a hotbed of supreme breweries, and you’d be remiss to skip them! Wynkoop has been around for over 30 years, and was started by one of the state’s former governors and mayors. They offer all kinds of obscure flavors like green chiles and gummy bears.

Blue Moon is global now, but it started right here in 1995. It’s calm, and the crowd tends to lean slightly older. Cerebral Brewing is more “sterile” in both the looks and the approach to their brewing. However, the result is delicious, from all kinds of sours to a rich imperial coffee stout. TRVE looks kind of like a cave, and is a great place for hanging out for hours and trying delicious brews like oak-fermented saisons and cultured sours. Make sure to grab their signature fried chicken sandwich, too!

Weather –

Denver is a city that definitely gets seasons – seasons which can have a great effect on what you plan on doing. If you like the warmth, we recommend going from the beginning of June to the middle of September, where the daily average is around 80 degrees. The colder months is from mid-November to the beginning of March, where it can definitely snow and be outright frigid. However, September and October and March/April are nice jacket weather where it’s neither too cold nor too hot.

Attractions –

Union Station – If you’re going to be in the area, make sure to check the station out. In 2014 it underwent a massive restoration, turning it into a cultural and entertainment hub. The Mercantile Dining and Terminal Bar are favorites, along with some bookstores, a hotel, and of course the convenience of having the rail, Amtrak, and shuttle bus station right there.

Denver Art Museum – The building alone is worth going to see, and looks like a fortress! The large gallery space inside showcases art from Asian, Indigenous North American, Alaska Native, European, and American art before 1900.

History Colorado Center – This is a newer attraction, but is great if you want to learn more about Denver and the state. It covers its history through technology and hands-on exhibits that are fun for kids and adults, alike.

Confluence Park – Founded originally as a gold mining camp, this beautiful park is great to walk or ride around. If you’re looking to get some fresh air, it’s fun for taking a picnic or a cup of coffee and just enjoying the day. Not to mention, you can take the Platte River Trolley to the Downtown Aquarium!

Elitch Gardens Theme & Water Park – This is the only waterpark in all of the country located downtown. Surprisingly, they’ve managed to fit in over 50 rides, including rollercoasters and plenty of wet rides!

Coors Field – Even if you aren’t a huge baseball fan, checking out an MLB game here is a great way to spend an evening. Grab a hotdog, beer, and have fun with the local fans.

Cherry Creek Shopping – Boasting over 500 stores, boutiques, galleries, and more, you can easily spend all day here. If you’re looking to buy a souvenir or treat yourself, this is the place to do it.

Pikes Peak – The red rock formations around it make it one of the top spots in Colorado for escaping the city noise and crowds. If you’re looking to do the same, we highly recommend take a tour of Pikes Peak .

Tips –

• Denver isn’t called the “Mile-High City” for nothing. It really is very high in altitude, and if you aren’t used to it it can really ruin your time. Make sure to drink plenty of water before and during your trip. Also eat foods high in potassium. The extra hydration and potassium will help your body better acclimate to the higher altitude.
• Make sure to bring a jacket. While Denver is not located in the mountains, the weather can be quite finicky. Not to mention, when you’re going to Rocky Mountain National Park, you are going to be up in the mountains, which can have completely different weather than Denver.
• Be respectful of nature. Colorado is a state that really values its wilderness and wildlife, and it’s important to follow outdoor etiquette.

Guided Tours in Rocky Mountain National Park

Our tours are private, meaning that your group will not be combined with another group. We offer either a half day or full day tour for up to five passengers in our comfortable touring SUV.

General Tour Information

Rocky Mountain National Park will be running its Timed Entry Permit system from May 24 - October 20, 2024. When you enter the park with Rocky Guides, you DO NOT NEED A TIMED ENTRY PERMIT, but you will still be required to pay for the RMNP Entrance Fee, which is $30/day or $35/week and covers your whole group. We can do this upon entering the park and does not need to be done in advance. If you already hold an America The Beautiful Interagency Annual Pass or another valid pass that grants access to national parks, please bring that with a valid government issued ID and that will cover your whole party.

Weather in the mountains tends to dictate what is possible to do on any given day. For most outings, it is wise to remain flexible, alert and to always be prepared with proper clothing . We advise starting tours as early as possible in the day, especially during the summer months, when our local weather tends to bring surprising thunderstorms in the afternoons.

Meeting Place

We offer pick-up/drop-off service at your lodging in the Estes Park area.

If your group would rather meet your guide at Estes Park Visitor Center rather than being picked up at your lodging that is also an option, especially for those visitors driving up from Denver, Boulder, Fort Collins, or other towns in Colorado's Front Range.

"This unique Beaver Meadows Visitor Center was designed by Taliesin Associated Architects in 1967, and was one of the most significant projects for the firm in the years following the death of its founder Frank Lloyd Wright. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 2001 It is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m in summer and from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in fall and winder. It is open year-round, but closed on Thanksgiving, President’s Day, and Christmas."

"Along Trail Ridge Road, stop at the Rainbow Curve viewing area to appreciate a varied and spectacular view.

Rainbow curve rests on tree line, marking the moment of passing between alpine and sub-alpine ecosystems. From this vantage point, visitors can view Horseshoe Park, Deer Mountain, the Alluvial Fan and the Mummy Mountain range. Rainbows can often be seen here after a rain, giving the location its name."

The views here are some of the best in the park. While here, hike the Alpine Ridge Trail that offers amazing views in all directions. It’s only a half mile round trip and has a 209-foot elevation gain. Watch the sky, and if a storm comes, stay off.

"The first major stop above treeline. Enjoy a paved path with educational signs and incredible views. Get a panoramic view at 11,716 feet!

Take a five minute walk down the paved asphalt trail to see Forest Canyon and its tributary canyons, Hayden Gorge and Gorge Lakes. Here the erosive force of glacial ice is unmistakable. A 1,500 feet thick glacier shaped a V-shaped stream valley below. With grinding force, the ice scoured the valley into the distinctive U-shaped valley of today.

Please stay on the paved asphalt trail to protect fragile alpine tundra plants. Studies have shown it can take decades for alpine plants and soil to recover after human trampling. Thank you for staying on the path and enjoying the flowers by not picking them, so future visitors can enjoy them as well."

  "Medicine Bow Curve provides a great location to view the northernmost areas of Rocky Mountain National Park.

Looking to the horizon, visitors will see the Medicine Bow Mountains and the state of Wyoming. The Cache la Poudre river can clearly be seen flowing through the valley beneath the lookout area. From this viewing area, visitors can see two tree lines. The uppermost tree line separates the sub-alpine ecosystem from the Alpine Tundra ecosystem. The lower tree line, seen near the bottom of the valley, highlights the valley floor which is too wet for trees to grow. It is also common to see Rocky Mountain Elk and small alpine animals like Ptarmigan and Marmot in this area. But please keep your distance and help keep wildlife wild. Never approach or feed wildlife. Animals that learn people are a source of food can become aggressive or stop hunting or foraging on their own."

"At 10,759 feet, this mountain pass has exceptional views of Poudre Lake, and is located on the continental divide!

The divide traverses the Americas from Alaska to Cape Horn in Chile. As it rains on the divide, the future course of a drop of water depends on a matter of feet. All water east of this pass will flow towards the Atlantic Ocean while all water on the west side will flow towards the Pacific Ocean. Look for a descriptive brown sign in the parking lot. Milner Pass is named for T.J Milner, an ambitious railroad promoter who surveyed a rail route across the divide. Like many surveyed routes of the 1880s, the railroad line was never built. This pass provides access to one end of the Ute Trail that leads to the Alpine Visitor Center."

For thousands of years, Native American communities lived seasonally in the Kawnueeche Valley. The Colorado River provided valuable resources that sustained communities through the summer months. In the late 1800’s, settlers from the United States of America began to farm the valley as homesteads.

Along the far side of the valley, visitors can view the impressive Never Summer Range. This row of mountains is the only volcanic mountain range in Rocky Mountain National Park. In the late 1800’s, prospectors looking for precious metals mined the valley below Farview Curve. The mines never produced riches, but today, the Never Summers provide another valuable resource: water. Look for a horizontal stripe running across the middle of the mountain range. Known as the Grand Ditch, this canal collects and carries water to Long Draw Reservoir. Even today, the ditch provides water to farmers and communities living east of Colorado's Front Range."

About Rocky Mountain National Park

Nestled in the valleys and peaks of the Rockies, Rocky Mountain National Park is a natural jewel located in Northern Colorado. The park houses several pristine lakes, iconic trails, panoramic overlooks, diverse wildlife, and has a vibrant history!

Though it’s not nearly as big as many other US national parks, it certainly has so much to do within its 265,807 acres that will charm you and take your breath away!

The park is known for two scenic drives; Trail Ridge Road and Old Fall River Road. Trail Ridge Road is, in fact, believed to be one of the most scenic routes in the world and is known to take travelers 4000 ft above in altitude within minutes.

Designated an All American Road, you’ll be surrounded by the Rocky Mountains in every direction you look on Trail Ridge Road, and you must plan sufficient time to tour it!

The expansive national park is also home to the massive Long’s Peak, which is the highest peak in the National Park as well as the Northern front range of the Rocky Mountains in North America and stands tall at 14,259-ft. 

Due to the enormous glaciers and mountain peaks in the area, the national park is also home to many lakes that look like they’re out of a springtime dream.

The most iconic and photographed lake is Bear Lake, which is set at an altitude of nearly 10,000 ft but is accessible via an easy half-mile trail. The lake also leads to others in the region like Dream Lake, Mills Lake, Emerald Lake, and Sky Pond, to name a select few.

While there are so many other lakes spread across the entire region, each unique and picturesque in its own way, another lake that you must tour is the Grand Lake which is actually Colorado’s largest and deepest natural lake, a true natural marvel! 

Rocky Mountain NP is truly the gift that keeps on giving as you’ll also be amidst alpine valleys that are home to some of the most majestic waterfalls you’ll ever see.

Though you will only be able to access most waterfalls after a short hike, the ultimate destination will genuinely be worth it.

There are around 30 named waterfalls in the region, out of which some noteworthy ones in the park are Alberta Falls, Glacier Falls, Thunder Falls, and Lyric Falls.

An alpine sanctuary, the Rocky Mountain National Park is infamously known as one of the top national parks to spot wildlife.

The park is known for its Elk (the population in the region is so large that it’s actually exclusively the Rocky Mountain Elk species), Mule Deer, Big Horn Sheep, Moose, Marmots, Chipmunks, Black Bears, Mountain Lions, and more.

The park is home to nearly 280 bird species, all of which survive in the unique and high-altitude weather of the Rockies.

The most sought-after bird in the national park is the white-tailed ptarmigan, one of the only species that inhabits the alpine zone but doesn’t migrate.

Though well-sought after, it’s actually quite tricky to spot, and the National Park Service recommends hiking on the tundra to find them. 

The park has several hiking trails, biking routes, picnicking spots, camping grounds, scenic lookouts, horse-riding, picturesque drives, etc.

With its unique climate, the wintertime (though accessible with winter permits) truly transforms the diverse landscapes, allowing you to experience frozen lakes, snow-clad peaks, and campfire dinners that you’ll never forget.

Definitely Yes! This is one of the Iconic National Parks and is filled with wildlife, history, and jaw-dropping scenery. This is one of the parks that everyone that has been, wants to go back to! It's that incredible. 

History of Rocky Mountain National Park

The natural landscapes of the Rocky Mountain National Park went through several phases of life were inhabited by numerous groups of people who contributed to its development and preservation, making it the jewel of Colorado that it is today.

It dates back to the time Paleo Indians inhabited the park. It is believed that they lived in and around the region for 11,000 years and witnessed now-extinct animals that they hunted in the area.

Within the park, several sites signify the presence of  Native Americans from centuries ago.

In particular, the Utes used to carry boulders to mountain peaks as part of their tribal ceremonies that you’ll still be able to spot!

As the 19th century rolled around, there were a few European settlers in and around the park, primarily to hunt or fur-catch.

One of the most significant events for the park took place in 1820 when the President guided an expedition team to document the geology and details about the natural landscapes in the region.

The expedition was led by Stephen Harriman Long, a US Corps Engineer, after whom the infamous Longs Peak was named.

As these people arrived in the mid-1800s, their actions caused several Native Americans to pack up and leave the area by 1860, and the remaining tribes were forced out due to the reservations by the late 1870s. 

Stephen Long’s expedition was followed by explorers like Joel Estes, Rufus B. Sage, Albert Bierstadt (after whom the beautiful Bierstadt Lake is named), Joseph Wescott, who were looking to hunt, explore the unique topography, and search for gold and silver in the area. 

After several groups of people toured and even briefly inhabited the park, national interest was generated to create a preservation area in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.

In the early 20th century, neighboring cities and towns became connected to the region, which is now the Rocky Mountain National Park like the Big Thompson Canyon Road.

Additionally, automobile stage lines joined Estes Park to Loveland and Lyons by 1909.

The creation of the national park in 1915 (a year prior to the formal establishment of the National Park Service) was supported by several individuals, such as Enos Mills (widely known as the Father of the Rocky Mountain National Park).

On January 26, 1915, Congress passed the bill, which was signed by President Woodrow Wilson, declaring the region a national park. 

Following that, several other regions around the national park were also included as they were discovered and explored, including the Never Summer Mountain Range, which was added in 1929. The park has come a long way since. 

While it has become the ultimate destination to explore the alpine valleys, spot wildlife, or even go skiing, it has been subjected to environmental destruction (particularly deadly wildfires) in the past two decades due to the alarming climate crisis. 

With such a rich history and the combined efforts of so many different groups of people inhabiting in and preserving the nature of the region for centuries, the Rocky Mountain National Park is the gem that it is today, and totally worth spending a couple of days in for one of the most scenic trips of your life!

Timed Entry Reservations

The National Park Service is bringing back timed entry reservations for those looking to tor the park between May 27 and October 11, 2022, so be sure to make reservations and read the fine print if you’re hoping to visit during this time. 

If you are visiting between October 12-May 27 or have a camping reservation, a guided trip, or a commercial tour, you will only need to pay the entry fee or have a  National Park Pass. 

Rocky Mountain National Park has seen unprecedented traffic congestion in recent years without any signs of slowing down. This forced the National Park Service to implement a ticketed entry program to relieve this congestion.

This means that now you must get a Park Pass or pay the entry fee plus obtain a timed ticketed entry pass between May 28 to October 11. You can get the ticketed entry pass at:

Unfortunately, pets are prohibited on Rocky Mountain National Park trails, tundra, and meadows. However, if you’re looking to hike with your pets, there are several trails and hikes around the Rocky Mountain National Park where you can take your furry friends.

Cell Service

Unfortunately, there is no cell service in Rocky Mountain National Park, so it’s best if you don’t rely on cell network to communicate while you’re in the park. The coverage throughout the park varies according to your region and depends a lot on your cell phone carrier. 

Rocky Mountain National Park is open 24 hours, 365 days a year. However, some attractions remain closed in the winter, and real-time hours depend on ongoing weather conditions since it can get extremely harsh in Colorado.

Be sure to look up road closure and weather updates on @RockyNPS on Twitter before making the trip. 

Trail Ridge Road is closed from approximately mid-October through late May. 

You’ll be able to access free, public Wi-Fi at Beaver Meadows and Kawuneeche visitor centers. 

Insect Repellent

Carrying insect repellent is always recommended, especially when you’re heading outdoors. Personally, we take and use permethrin spray on our clothes prior to all our park trips so we can explore hassle-free!

Water Bottle 

It is essential to carry your own water bottle with you as plastic bottles are not permitted in the park. With high summer temperatures and more chances of altitude sickness, staying hydrated while visiting the Rocky Mountain National Park is a must. 

Several parking lots are available at most major attractions at Rocky Mountain National Park. Since the park is frequently visited, the parking spaces near well-known landmarks fill up quite early in the morning, particularly spots near Glacier Gorge Trailhead, Bear Lake Trailhead, Wild Basin Corridor, etc. Additionally, when the weather is stormy or snowy, the roads leading to the park can shut so plan your route in accordance with any harsh weather forecasts.

Food/Restaurants

The only place to get food within the boundaries of the Rocky Mountain National Park is the Café at Trail Ridge.

The Café is operational during the months that Trail Ridge is open for visitors and is a one-stop-shop for all your snack and beverage needs within the park.

On a cold fall day, you’ll be able to enjoy a hot espresso and hot dog as you take a break from all the hiking you’ll be doing at Rocky Mountain National Park.  

There are no gas stations present within the Rocky Mountains National park. The nearest gas station is located 50 miles between Grand Lake and Estes Park communities. 

Drones are not permitted within National Park Sites .

Unfortunately, there are no charging stations inside the national park, but you’ll be able to find chargers in Estes Park (close to three of the park’s four entrances on its East side) and Grand Lake (close to the park’s fourth entrance, located on its Westside). 

Accessibility

The National Park Service strives to make the parks accessible to all. The Rocky Mountain National Park has several landmarks that are easily accessible, like visitor centers, self-guided trails, campgrounds, scenic lookouts, and more.

• Lily Lake (8,880 feet) - A primary trail by Lily Lake with stunning overlooks and near an accessible fishing pier.

Where is the National Park Visitor Center?

In light of the ongoing health crisis (COVID-19), visitor centers in Rocky Mountain National Park are operating differently, so keep that in mind before you plan your trip. 

Alpine Visitor Center

It is open from late May through mid-October (during the months that Trail Ridge Road is open to visitors).

Operational Hours:

Late May to Mid-June: 10:30 AM - 4:30 PM

Mid-June to Mid-October: 9:30 AM - 4:30 PM

Located by Trail Ridge Road (one of the most scenic drives in the park), the Alpine Visitor Center is the visitor center at the highest elevation in the entire National Park system set at 11,796-ft.

Here you’ll be able to get all the information you need with pamphlets, maps, and park rangers present in the center. You’ll also be able to get your stamps, snacks, and catch a panoramic glimpse of the valley. 

Beaver Meadows Visitor Center

It is open year-round, with reduced hours in Fall, Winter, and Spring. It is closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.

Located west of Estes Park on US Highway 36, beaver Meadows Visitor Center will be on ou left if you enter via US. Highway 36. The visitor center is home to the iconic Rocky Mountain Conservancy Nature Store, from where you can purchase gits, books, souvenirs, and more! The visitor center is also well-equipped with basic amenities and all the information you need regarding the park.

Fall River Visitor Center

It is open year-round; however, with the possibility of reduced hours in Winter, It is closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Due to COVID-19, the number of people permitted in the center at once is restricted.

It is located on US Highway 34, five miles west of the town of Estes Park. The visitor center shares the building with Gateway Store, where you’ll be able to find unique gifts and every possible souvenir to remember your trip to the Rocky Mountain National Park by. 

Kawuneeche Visitor Center

It is typically open year-round. However, due to the current health crisis, exceptions are in place with reduced hours in Fall, Winter, and Spring. It is closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.

Located about a mile north of Grand Lake on the east side of Trail Ridge Road or US. The Rocky Mountain National Park occupies 265,807 acres in Northern Colorado and is close to two gateway towns, namely Estes Park and Grand Lake.

It is important to note that Trail Ridge Road remains closed from approximately mid-October to mid-May (so plan accordingly and read up on current road conditions before you make the drive).

Best time to visit Rocky Mountain National Park

The gorgeous Rocky Mountain National Park is considered to be an all-weather park, and no matter which time of year you visit, your trip is sure to be brilliant.

However, with its unique climate and topography, your experience in the park in some months is bound to be different than others. 

Weather and Seasons

The springtime in the region is usually associated with the flowers blooming, snow melting, and climate becoming warmer. Spring is at the tail-end of the off-season for the park, as many attractions may be subject to closure due to harsh weather conditions until late May.

If you’re looking to visit with lesser crowds enjoy the melted snow caps and slightly chilly weather, visiting in the Spring will be a good time!

Visiting the Rocky Mountain National Park in the summer is considered ideal, and the months from June to September are the peak tourist season for the park.

Though the park is open year-round, some parts of the park can be closed down in other seasons due to harsh weather, but in the summer, you’ll be free to explore all the park has to offer.

Though it’ll be peak tourist season, as long as you reach the attractions early in the day, you’ll be able to go on hikes, visit scenic overlooks to get a breathtaking view of the park, and enjoy your time peacefully.

Autumn/Fall

The beginning of autumn is again considered one of the best times to visit as you’ll be able to truly experience every different landmark in the park and even watch the foliage turn all kinds of colors. Particularly during this time, the sunrises and sunsets are truly magical, and coupled with the majestic alpine valleys and mountain peaks, the park in the fall is genuinely a delight! 

Once October comes to an end, the weather in the region can become harsh, leading to hail, heavy rainfall, snowstorms, and more. If you’re looking to take a more-isolated and quiet trip to the park, visiting in the winter with your snow boots isn’t a terrible idea.

Through January and February usually witness aplenty of snow, with temperatures in the 20s or 30s in the day and below zero at night; if you’re looking for a picturesque winter getaway, the Rocky Mountain National Park in the winter is the place for you!

There are so many epic things to do while visiting Rocky Mountain NP. 

Trail Ridge Road

One of the most scenic drives, the Trail Ridge Road, has been designated as an All American Road. With panoramic views of the Rocky Mountains in every direction, this iconic drive is known to be able to take its travelers 4000 ft. up in altitude within a matter of minutes. Trail Ridge Road at its highest point is 12,183 feet above sea level. 

On a trip like no other, you’ll catch views that you’re sure to remember for the rest of your life.

Bonus tip: Remember to stay hydrated when you’re on the drive, especially if you’re prone to altitude sickness. 

Old Fall River Road

Another one of the park’s most prized possessions, the Old Fall River Road, became the first auto route connecting travelers to the park’s high country.

A classic “motor nature trail,” this route has no guard rails but is considered extremely safe. A journey down this winding, narrow road is for those looking to take a slow, tranquil drive amongst the mountainous region and connect with the natural beauty in the area.

This 11-mile long route was once used by the Paleo Indians to access the park’s territory and is evidence of their contribution to the park’s beauty today. Bonus: you might also spot some Elk at the end of the road! 

Wildlife viewing

The Rocky Mountain National Park is considered to be one of the top parks to spot some wildlife.

The alpine valley, mountain surrounded park is home to animals like Elk (the park has its own Rocky Mountain Elk species that inhabit the area), Moose, Bighorn Sheep, Black Bears, Marmots, Chipmunks, and so much more. You’ll also be able to spot unique insects (plenty of butterflies) and reptiles in the park.

Junior Ranger Program 

Located on the east side of Rocky Mountain National Park along Trail Ridge Road in the Summer at Hidden Valley is the Junior Ranger Headquarters! A one-stop shop for you to partake in a ranger-led program, complete your book, and earn your badge for the Rocky Mountain National Park. 

Bird Watching

The Rocky Mountain National Park houses up to 280 bird species. With the region’s ever-changing climate and unique topography, the area’s bird species have had to adapt according to the weather conditions and have evolved per their habitat.

The most-searched-for bird in the park is the white-tailed ptarmigan, the only species that reside in the region but doesn’t migrate at any point in the year.

The National park Service recommends that if you’re looking to spot one, go on a hike in the tundra basin, and if you don’t make too much noise and get lucky, you’ll catch a glimpse of the beautiful bird.

Horseback Riding

Since the park’s conception in 1915, horseback riding has remained a tradition in the Rocky Mountain National Park. The park has two stables - Glacier Creek Stables and Moraine Park Stables, with several others in the region outside the park’s boundary. Horseback riding in the valley is one of the unique ways to explore the area, discover flora and fauna, and interact with one of the most loving species ever! 

One of the most incredible activities in the park is going fishing. To restore and conserve natural aquatic environments and pay ode to the past inhabitants who spent a lot of time fishing, the national park allows you to go fishing as long as you have a valid Colorado fishing license. Be sure to check out the extensive guidelines and learn which are the permitted places to go fishing. Some of which are Mills Lake, Mirror Lake, Pettingell Lake, and Sky Pond.

Hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park

A paradise for hikers, the Rocky Mountain National Park is home to 355 miles of hiking trails, ranging from strolling walkways to rugged, strenuous uphill hikes.

With most of the trails being high-altitude hikes, it’s essential to take sufficient rest, stay hydrated at all times, and choose the routes wisely as per your training and physical abilities.

Some of the most iconic trails are - the Bear Lake trail loop, Sprague Lake loop, Boulder Brook Hike, Mills Lake Hike, Twin Sisters Peak hike, and so many more.

One of the many beautiful lakes that lie within the park boundary, Bear Lake is located at the tail-end of Bear Lake Road, which is 9 miles from the turn-off at US. Highway 36.

Situated at nearly 10,000 ft., this high-altitude lake is one of the most photographed parts of the park.

The pristine lake sits at the foothills of Hallett Peak and the continental divide and can be accessed via an easy and accessible half-mile loop hike.

The lake is also the starting point for plenty of the hiking trails of the national park that range from being amateur, easy trails to challenging and high-intensity hikes. 

 Lily Ridge Trail

This 1.2-mile roundtrip climb around Lily Lake may be a favorite for families and guests that don’t want to commit to a long hike in the snow and are seeking out generally flat terrains. Including an incredible sight of the eastern side of Longs Peak “The Diamond,” this path circles Lily Lake and maybe a 15-minute drive south of Estes Park.

This trek concludes with a beautiful alpine lake with spectacular Rocky Mountain National Park views

Emerald Lake Trail

This popular three-and-a-half-mile round-trip trek travels past Nymph Lake, Dream Lake, and Tyndall Creek, with stunning views of Longs Peak, Hallett Peak, and Flattop Mountain along the way, before arriving at the subalpine Emerald Lake at the height of 10,000 feet. Recent visitors advised arriving early at the trailhead to avoid congested circumstances on this popular hike. Visitors also recommend bringing slip-on spikes for your shoes unless you're traveling in the summer, as the route is likely to be snow-covered.

Cub Lake Trail

Cub Lake Trail is a 4.6-mile circle trail that leads to the western end of Moraine Park and is somewhat challenging. Its location is surrounded by meadows, wildflowers, and tiny lakes and is a great place to watch various animals. Many tourists claim to have seen moose and other animals in the area’s flora.

Cub Lake Trail is at its best when the area’s wildflowers bloom in a kaleidoscope display in the spring. In the fall, the route is alive with bright red and orange. While in the winter, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are available. It would be a good idea to keep a mosquito repellent or insect spray with you.

 Gem Lake - 3.4 miles, moderate.

This trek concludes with a beautiful alpine lake with spectacular views of Rocky Mountain National Park.

How to beat the crowds in Rocky Mountain National Park?

As one of the most visited National Parks in the country, Rocky Mountain National Park has its fair share of crowds that you just can’t avoid. However, visiting at certain times of the year and detailed planning of the times in the day to visit certain attractions will allow you to avoid most crowds. 

The national park’s seasons are divided into the off-season and peak seasons.

Peak season is from June until mid-October, when all parts of the park are accessible, beautiful, and visited by most tourists.

Visiting during the off-season, though it may lead to you not being able to see attractions that close down due to harsh weather conditions will undoubtedly lead to a more tranquil and isolated visit. 

In addition, visiting the most famous attractions early in the day and taking time later to explore some more uncommon but still beautiful landmarks within the park is a great way to dodge the crowds.

Especially with the timed entry reservations being required to enter the park between May 27 and October 10, 2022, planning your trip to the nitty-gritty hours of the day could be beneficial in avoiding crowds if you happen to visit in the peak season.

Glacier Basin Campground

Campsites: 150 (RVs permitted, up to 35 ft in length)

Accessibility: Yes, four ADA sites are available 

Located near US. Highway 36 near Estes Park, the glacier Basin Campground is a scenic site with a mix of meadows, alpine trees, and shrubs. It requires a reservation and has flush toilets, potable water, firewood and ice, and other basic amenities and costs $30/night.

Moraine Park Campground

Season: Open year-round, with limited amenities in the winter

Located near the Beaver Meadows Entrance on US. Highway 36, the Moraine Park Campground, is located north of Moraine Park and boasts scenic vistas of the park and the surrounding mountain peaks. It requires reservations in the summer and operates on a first-come,first-serve basis in the wintertime. It has flush toilets, potable water, firewood and ice, and other basic amenities and costs $30/night (summer) and $20/night (winter). 

Timber Creek Campground

Campsites: 98 (RVs permitted, up to 30 ft in length)

Located at 8900 feet along the gorgeous Colorado River about eight miles north of the Grand Lake entrance to the park, the Timber Creek campground is the only campground in the west part of the park. It requires a reservation and has flush toilets, potable water, firewood, and other basic amenities and costs $30/night.

Longs Peak Campground

Campsites: 26 (tent-only, RVs not permitted)

Accessibility: No, zero ADA sites are available 

Located 20 minutes south of Estes Park on US. Highway 7, this campground is situated at an altitude of 9500 ft. Here you’ll have panoramic views of the lakes, the mountain peaks, the valley, and beyond. It is a first-come, first-serve-only campground with vault toilets and potable water and costs $30/night.

About the Tour

Your tour through the Rockies begins at the Estes Park entrance, the most popular and most accessible entrance to the national park. From here, you’ll have the opportunity to take a detour down toward Bear Lake if you want to.

Along the way, you’ll pass numerous splendid hiking trails to smaller lakes like Fern Lake and Bierstadt Lake before finally arriving at the huge, sparkling Bear Lake itself. There’s a reason this has become one of the park’s hottest attractions!

Continuing along the main route, the first hiking trail you’ll reach is Deer Mountain Trailhead, offering some great views from above if you’re willing to make the trek.

Then you’ll see Beaver Ponds, featuring a boardwalk through a unique wetland biome, followed by Hidden Valley, which bears more resemblance to the Canadian wilderness than anything in the US.

After that, you’ll arrive at the first of many overlooks: Many Parks Curve Overlook. This viewpoint offers excellent views of a whole bunch of lush glacial meadows. As you drive toward the next overlook, you’ll hear all about the General Federation of Women’s Clubs and the role they played in this park’s history.

Then, you’ll start uncovering the buried history of the Ute tribe who once occupied these mountains. You’ll also hear a retelling of the traditional Ute creation story about how a coyote helped create the world.

As you continue, you’ll pass the Roger Toll Memorial, dedicated to a photographer who helped spread the word about this one-of-a-kind landscape. After a few more stunning overlooks, you’ll arrive at Poudre Lake, which gets so cold during the winter it freezes all the way through!

On your way to the Colorado River Trailhead, which offers a look at an abandoned mining town, you’ll hear about the science behind the Rocky Mountains and Margaret Boos, a trailblazing geologist who fell in love with this park.

Up next are a couple of fascinating historical sites. First up is the Timber Creek Road Camp Barn, an artifact of the depression-era work projects which helped build the park’s roads and trails. Then there’s the Holzwarth Historic Site, one of the only remnants of the homesteads which could once be found all over the Rockies.

Up ahead, at Coyote Valley Trailhead, you’ll find an easy, paved trail with a popular fishing spot at the end. Then, on your way to the Green Mountain Trailhead, you’ll learn all about the bountiful wildlife that calls the Rocky Mountains home.

Finally, you’ll arrive at the lovely lakeside town of Grand Lake, the perfect place to make your return to civilization. The tour concludes here.

2024 Updates:

• You must reserve a permit in advance to visit  Rocky Mountain National Park from May 24 to October 20, 2024.
• Reservations are made online on the  recreation.gov website. Each daily reservation costs $2 per vehicle, which is in addition to the $25 daily entrance fee or $35 weekly entrance fee per vehicle.
• There are two different types of timed entry permits:
• Park Access + : This permit gives you access to everything in Rocky Mountain National Park. It includes Bear Lake Road and the hikes that start here (Bear Lake, Emerald and Dream Lakes, Alberta Falls, Sky Pond, Hallett Peak, and Sprague Lake). The permit is in effect from 5 am to 6
• Park Access: This permit gives you access to everything in Rocky Mountain National Park except for Bear Lake Road. You can drive Trail Ridge Road, visit the Alpine Visitor Center, hike to Longs Peak and to Chasm Lake, and hike Gem Lake. The permit is in effect from 9 am to 2 pm.
