Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .

Day passes for Phoenix hotel pools: How to swim and play without booking a stay

swim and travel

Summer days call for lounging by the pool, plunging into cool water as a break from triple-digit temperatures or relaxing poolside with a drink in hand.

Metro Phoenix is abundant with luxurious resort pools, from family-friendly water parks to serene adults-only oases.

And it's possible to enjoy many of them even if you aren't staying overnight. Day passes give people a chance to experience what a hotel's pool area has to offer, often for only a fraction of the cost of a stay.

Most resort passes range from $25 to $60, though some no-frills pools allow guests for as low as $15 and more opulent resort pools can carry a steeper price tag.

Here's what to know about ResortPass and booking a day pass through a hotel.

ResortPass pool passes in Phoenix and Scottsdale

Many Phoenix and Scottsdale hotels offer day passes through ResortPass . Among the Phoenix-area hotels that have day passes or cabana rentals are:

  • Arizona Grand Resort and Spa.
  • Arizona Biltmore, A Waldorf Astoria Resort.
  • Hilton Scottsdale Resort & Villas.
  • Hyatt Regency Scottsdale Resort & Spa at Gainey Ranch.
  • Fairmont Scottsdale Princess.
  • Westin Kierland Resort & Spa.
  • Omni Scottsdale Resort & Spa at Montelucia.
  • The Wigwam.
  • Royal Palms Resort & Spa.
  • Hilton Phoenix Resort at the Peak.
  • The Scott Resort & Spa.
  • JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn Resort & Spa.
  • JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort & Spa.
  • Rise Uptown Phoenix.
  • Sheraton Grand at Wild Horse Pass.
  • Hotel Valley Ho.
  • Hotel Adeline.
  • Andaz Scottsdale Resort & Bungalows.
  • The Scottsdale Plaza Resort.
  • Caesars Republic Scottsdale.

Hot pot, craft beer and Mexican coffee: 10 new restaurants open now in Tempe

Book a pool pass through the resort

Some hotels allow you to book your day pass directly with the resort.

Great Wolf Lodge Arizona , on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community near Scottsdale, is one of them. It offers full- and half-day passes ranging from $55 to $100 per person.

Is Resort Pass a good deal?

Whether day passes are the best option for you depends on the time you plan to go (prices and availability are usually better during the week) and how many people are going.

Day passes tend to offer the best savings for solo travelers, couples and small groups, as the cost of a pass is usually far less than a room for an overnight stay and does not require resort fees .

Families and large groups might find booking a one-night stay is a better deal than buying a day pass for each person.

We searched for resort passes and hotel rooms for a stay at Arizona Grand Resort & Spa, known for its Oasis Water Park. On most days, including weekends, day passes for a family of two adults ($55 each) and two children ($45 each) cost $234.70 with tax.

But you might be able to stay the night for about the same amount — or less.

We found a suite with two queen beds and a sofa bed Saturday, July 20, for $240.90 including tax and the $75 per night resort fee. We found rates as low as $218.39 per night, including tax and resort fees, for several weekday dates in July.

For a day at Great Wolf Lodge on July 3, when day passes cost $75 per person, we found the price plus tax for day passes for a family of four ($345.34) was comparable to the total cost of booking a family suite for the night, including taxes and the $39.99 per night resort fee ($346.86).

If the cost of a room is cheaper than or about the same as getting passes for your entire group, the advantage of booking a room is you'll have access to amenities that are reserved for hotel guests, such as day spas.

Woman, 60, becomes fifth tourist to die in violent riptide at same beach town in just four days

A 60-year-old woman has tragically become the fifth tourist to die in a beach town within just four days.

Debbie Szymanski, from St. Louis, Missouri, was vacationing in Panama City Beach , Florida when she fell victim to deadly riptides . She had been enjoying a day at the Carillon neighborhood with her family on Sunday when they noticed she wasn't responding after going for a swim around 11:30 am, according to the Bay County Sheriff's Office.

Her family pulled her lifeless body from the water as sheriff deputies and emergency services hurried to the scene. She was then rushed to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.

This tragic incident follows the drowning of three men on Friday, and a teenager who also lost his life in the Gulf waters the day before.

Just two days prior to Debbie's death, three Alabama fathers also lost their lives minutes after arriving at an Airbnb they had rented for a holiday in Panama City Beach. Harold Denzel Hunter, 25, Jemonda Ray, 24, and Marius Richardson, 24, checked into their rental near the Watercress Condominiums on the beach just before 8pm before deciding to go for a swim, as per the sheriff's office.

Tragically, within minutes, all three were caught in a rip current. The Bay County Sheriff's Office, Emergency Services, Coast Guard, and Florida Wildlife Conservation Commission all responded to the beach and searched the dark waters from ground level and above, using helicopters.

The three men were eventually found and pulled from the water, but tragically, all three succumbed to their injuries at local hospitals, according to the sheriff's office. Bay County Sheriff Tommy Ford expressed: "The acts of courage by first responders were amazing. Many of our rescue swimmers with the Sheriff's Office, Bay County Emergency Services and Panama City Beach went into the dark and dangerous waters for over two hours to attempt to rescue and search for the young men."

"I worry about the emotional toll that these situations take on first responders as I know I'm struggling with it as well. I have such a heavy heart this morning about the loss of three young visitors to our community. I'm praying for their family and ask that you do the same. It is such a tragedy."

Ray and Richardson, who were cousins and grew up like brothers, and their friend Hunter, were the victims, family members told AL.com. Ray was a father to a toddler son and worked at Amazon, Richardson was a married father of a two year old son, and Hunter was a father to a young son and daughter, as per the local outlet.

The girlfriends of Ray and Richardson were also part of the trip.

The first victim of the violent riptides was 19-year-old Ryker Milton, who tragically lost his life last Thursday evening after he went out for a swim and got caught in a current, as reported by KOCO News. Ryker, hailing from Oklahoma, was with a friend at the beach around 4pm when a rip current took hold of him.

Lifeguards managed to pull him from the sea and began life-saving measures on the beach.

He was then rushed to a local hospital in critical condition and passed away in the emergency room, Panama City officials disclosed to the station. The teen was a standout football player at Hilldale High School, from which he graduated in 2023, as online tributes have noted.

In a heartfelt Facebook message, Hilldale Soccer expressed their grief: "Today, we lost one of the most special kids to come through our programme. It's so hard to describe this young man in words that will do his life justice. From all of the coaches, players, parents, and more, we love you Ryker. It was an honour to coach you, play with you, and cheer you on. You changed all of our lives. We will miss you so much."

Authorities, including the sheriff's office, have consistently cautioned against swimming in gulf waters when red flags are flying. Ford took to Facebook Sunday after Debbie was rescued, urgently pleading: "PLEASE STAY OUT OF THE WATER. The water can appear calm but underneath currents are treacherous today. It's just too dangerous right now to swim."

All five victims were swimming under either double or single red flag conditions. Double red flags signal "extremely dangerous conditions" and mean the water is closed to swimmers.

Single red flags warn of "high hazard conditions with high surf and/or currents."

UPDATED: Indiana swim and dive sends initial 11 athletes to 2024 Paris Olympic Games

spiusdolympics062424.jpg

With the start of the Olympics only a little over a month away, Indiana will send 11 swimming and diving representatives to the 2024 Paris Games, with more athletes capable of joining the list at a later date.

Seven of the 11 athletes earned qualification in the U.S. Olympic Swimming and Diving Trials, which spanned from June 15-23.

Former Hoosier standout Lilly King was the first to clinch her berth to the Olympics for Team USA after winning the 100-meter breaststroke event. This summer will mark King’s third Olympic games as she attempts to extend her record as Indiana’s all-time leading medal winner among women’s athletes.

Jessica Parratto joins King in becoming another former Hoosier to reach her third Olympic games, qualifying in the synchronized 10-meter event alongside her partner Delaney Schnell. The pairing captured a silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo games in the same event.

Indiana rising senior Carson Tyler will compete in the 3-meter springboard and 10-meter platform event in his first Olympic games. In his junior season, Tyler won the NCAA title and Big Ten Championship for both events he will compete in at the Olympics.

Joining Tyler in the 3-meter springboard event is former Indiana diver Andrew Capobianco, who is set to compete in his second Olympic games. His first appearance in the Olympics was at the 2020 Tokyo Games, where he attained a silver medal in the synchronized 3-meter event.

The inclusion of Parratto, Tyler and Capobianco on the Olympic roster means Indiana has sent a diver to every Summer Olympics since 1964.

Rising senior Josh Matheny was included in the final 26-man roster for Team USA after finishing second in the 200-meter breaststroke, a place that did not guarantee qualification. Fellow rising senior Anna Peplowski faced a similar situation to Matheny after not guaranteeing placement with her fifth-place finish in the 200-meter freestyle, but her name was announced on the women’s roster June 22.

At Indiana, both Matheny and Peplowski have experienced great success. Matheny is a two-time NCAA medalist and three-time Big Ten Champion, while Peplowski medaled twice at the NCAA Championships last season and broke program records in six separate events.

Blake Pieroni was the final Hoosier representative to qualify for Team USA from the Olympic Trials.  After placing sixth in the 200-meter freestyle, Pieroni will compete in the 4x200-meter freestyle relay in his third appearance at the Olympics.

Four athletes who did not swim in the trials will also be representing Indiana. Open water swimmer Mariah Denigan, a rising senior at Indiana, will be the only one competing for Team USA.

Rising seniors Rafael Miroslaw and Tomer Frankel will swim for Germany and Israel, respectively, and rising junior Kai van Westering will compete for the Netherlands.

The full list of Indiana representatives has yet to be finalized, with certain international athletes still able to qualify for the 2024 Paris Games.

The Indiana representatives will begin their journey to a gold medal July 26 in Paris, France.

CLARIFICATION: This story was updated to clarify more international athletes could qualify for the Olympics at a later date.
