STATESBORO — As an alternative to the group tours, the Office of Admissions has begun offering self-guided tours on both the Statesboro and Armstrong campuses. Out of interest, I took one of these tours myself, and enjoyed a nice and informative stroll around campus.

Beginning at Lewis Hall or Victor Hall, depending on the campus, participants are invited to take a pamphlet with a map of the campus, with a QR code available to scan that would take them to a webpage detailing a “path” for their tour to follow. On the Statesboro tour at least, this path follows a circular trek around campus, visiting hotspots like the Hanner Fieldhouse, Russell Union, and the RAC while also touching upon lesser known (but still important) locales like the Eidson House and Cone Hall.

Having taken part in the original group format–and personally never one for crowds–the opportunity to take the tour alone and at my own pace was a breath of fresh air. The freedom of also not being on a predetermined path was also a welcome addition; your only guide on the tour is the next destination, but you’re free to reach it in your own way. You could even make a path yourself, going to each stop in an order you choose. It’s certainly a much freer experience.

At each “stop” on the tour, the webpage would provide an optional video that would briefly discuss the location in question, listing details like its current role on campus, its history, or some of its unique features. While the videos were informative, some even providing info I didn’t know after four years here, it was a bit surprising how short they were, with most only giving around 10 seconds of info. Some destinations on the tour didn’t even receive an informational video, though most of them did at least provide a link to the corresponding department’s webpage.

Some places I would personally consider “hotspots” on campus, such as the Nursing/Chemistry Building, the College of Education, and the Biological Sciences Building, weren’t even addressed on the tour, even though areas much farther from the rest of the tour destinations, like the RAC and Paulson Stadium, were.

I’m aware that addressing every building on campus in a reasonable amount of time is feasibly impossible, as well as the fact that I’ve been here for four years (and at least two campus tours) has probably dampened my experience somewhat, and despite my qualms I did genuinely enjoy the tour. For someone who is curious about the campus but doesn’t like the restrictions or company of a group tour, this option is certainly worth a look.

This new self-guided audio tour through the Millstone Valley spotlights rich US history

MILLSTONE – A new self-guided driving audio tour of the Millstone Valley National Scenic Byway is available this summer.

The tour, which takes an hour according to the website, spans the entire 27-mile byway loop.

It passes through the villages of Kingston, Rocky Hill, Griggstown, East Millstone and Millstone Borough, by following the Millstone River and the Delaware and Raritan Canal.

Also along the route is the Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park, which contains 70 miles of flat paths for hikers, joggers and cyclists, as well as opportunities to fish and kayak the canal.

The tour was created by the Millstone Valley Preservation Coalition and funded by the Somerset County Cultural and Heritage Commission.

The tour is available for both Apple and Android users and all they have to do is download the TravelStorysGPS app then follow the guided tour through their car speakers.

The app uses GPS to tailor instructions based on the user’s location while providing narration of the geography, history, landscape, and noteworthy landmarks along the route.

Also included in the app are links to extra information selected by the coalition including historic photographs and maps.

The Millstone Byway is one of the eight designated scenic byways in New Jersey and its route is near many historic districts including River Road, Kington Mill, and Six Mile Run.

Millstone Valley also has a rich history dating back to the American Revolution.

In 1777, George Washington marched the Continental Army north through Millstone Valley after battles at Trenton and Princeton, then about a year later he would march them south through the valley to the Battle of Monmouth.

The Continental Army also took its final march through Millstone Valley, as it marched from New York to Yorktown, Virginia, meeting up with the French and defeating the British for final victory.

The Delaware and Raritan Canal also played a central role in the history of the area as it linked a trade route from New York to Pennsylvania in the 19 th century.

Those who can’t download the app can find the tour at millstonevalley.org or can take the tour from the comfort of their own home using the travelstorys.com .

Questions before or during the tour can be directed to the Byway Visitor’s Center on Griggstown Causeway which is open 1 to 4 p.m. on weekends April through October.

Ah, the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island . This timeless Michigan venue is known for its rich past, timeless elegance, lush gardens, and never-ending front porch.

It really is an irresistible destination, especially if you’re interested in architecture, Mackinac Island history, or culture.

Maybe some day I’ll be able to check an overnight stay off of my bucket list.

Take a Self-Guided Tour of The Grand Hotel

Because that “some day” won’t be happening anytime soon, I found a different way to step into this luxurious slice of history: I bought a ticket for the self-guided tour.

That’s right – you don’t have to be a guest to experience the colorful inner halls of this Victorian-era gem.

Just pay the guest admission fee and you can wander the grounds of the Grand Hotel all day long.

Here’s what you can see and do on the tour:

Yes, the Grand Hotel is a Michigan Icon

The 1887 Grand Hotel is a National Historic Landmark that captures over a century of Mackinac Island’s story.

Stepping inside, guests and visitors get a glimpse into the past through its vast array of photographs, artifacts, and intriguing stories.

Here’s how to get inside:

Grand Hotel Tour Hours & Admission

At just $10 per adult and $5 for ages 6-9, the hotel’s inviting spaces are open to daytime guests daily from 9 AM to 6 PM. (Those 5 and under get to explore free of charge.)

The tour admissions desk is located at the East Entrance, near – but not in – Sadie’s Ice Cream Shop.

Self-guided Grand Hotel tour admission can be purchased in person or online .

With your admission, you’ll get several coupons as well as a stamped brochure, which gives access to the grand porch, public areas, and gorgeous grounds.

Note: the pool and guest room areas are exclusive to hotel guests; a Grand Hotel pool day pass is not available.

The Famous Grand Hotel Porch

Welcome to the World’s Longest Front Porch ! This iconic 660-foot long relaxation station is an absolute must-see.

Here, an endless line of white rocking chairs begs the question: which one will you choose?

No matter, they all lull and soothe the same in their front-porch kind of way.

While you rock, notice the vibrant red geraniums lining the banister – a Grand Hotel trademark, while a life-sized chess game adds a touch of fun.

Front Porch Ceiling Color: Look up at the front porch ceiling and you’ll notice it’s painted a lovely shade of aquamarine blue. What you don’t see: nesting birds.

This “Dew Kiss” turquoise paint shade ( Pittsburgh Paints Dew Kiss ) is an aesthetic and ingenious bird-deterrent, as are other blue-hued ceiling colors.

Good to know : Stepping onto the Grand Hotel’s inviting red-carpeted stairs requires a $10 admission fee. Unlike other hotels, casual walk-ins to the lobby aren’t permitted here.

Great Lawn & Gardens

Second to the front porch, the exquisite Grand Hotel gardens and lawns also cannot be missed. They’re legendary!

The cool Mackinac summer growing season means an explosion of color in the gardens, courtesy of the thousands of annuals and perennials planted here. Be on the lookout for geraniums, roses, peonies, daisies, coleus, cosmos, lilies, begonias and more.

Cheery flowers, fountains, and a life-sized chess game flank the giant lawn to brighten the day.

In what looks to go on for a mile or more, annuals line the front of the hotel, layering color in a spectacular way.

You’ll be hard-pressed to leave this floral wonderland!

Find the Secret Garden

Perhaps the most exciting garden of all is the secret garden.

It really is a secret.

It doesn’t show up on the hotel map, and when you’re walking the grounds, there is no sign.

We walked past the entrance twice and had to diligently look for the entrance in the hedge to finally spot its location.

As you wind your way into the labyrinth-like secret garden, get ready. The first scene is the most breath-taking: from your spot, look up to see the Grand Hotel perched above a river of colorful garden blossoms.

Hall of History

Located on the main level near the admission desk, the Hall of History includes a treasure trove of artifacts from the “Somewhere in Time” movie.

Fun Fact: The 1980 film  Somewhere in Time , starring Christopher Reeve, Jane Seymour and Christopher Plummer, was filmed on location at Grand Hotel. Every year, the movie’s huge fan club meets at Grand Hotel in late October.

You’ll also find historic photos of this great destination, plus numerous celebrities and politicians who’ve visited the Grand Hotel and other monumental events.

All Grand Hotel restaurants and bars are open to non-hotel guests.

Salle a Manger

Also known as the Main Dining Room, Salle A Manger is where you can eat breakfast, lunch, or dinner while overlooking the world’s longest porch and the Straits of Mackinac.

The Grand Luncheon Experience, available daily in the main dining room from noon – 2 PM, with a spread of salads, cheeses, meats, seafood, fresh fruit, and topped off with  a lavish and bountiful dessert display.

The Parlor after Dinner

The Parlor is also the place for the harpist to play during post-dinner coffee (demitasse) while guests anticipate the opening of the Terrace Room for dancing.  

Ascend the winding staircase to the 5th floor, or take the red elevator next to the large ship, to reach the Cupola Bar.

Here, starry carpeting and one of the best views on Mackinac Island create an unforgettable experience.

Open daily from noon – 11:00 PM.

Terrace Room

Every evening after dinner, the Grand Hotel’s live orchestra fills the Terrace Room with music, keeping a long-standing tradition of late-night dancing alive.

Dancing is open to the public!

How long does it take to tour the Grand Hotel?

Plan on at least an hour to do a very quick walk-through of the property. If you want to dig in, dine, lounge on the porch, or play lawn games, plan to stay onsite for 3 – 4 hours.

Does the Grand Hotel have a dress code?

Yes, there is a dress code at the Grand Hotel. During the day, the code is casual resort clothing. After 6:00 PM, gentlemen are required to wear a suit or sport coat, necktie, and dress pants. Ladies wear dresses, skirts, dress slacks, or other dressy attire.

Natural Garden Tour offers a self-guided look at Clark County gardens

When it comes to gardening, you don’t need a green thumb to get your hands dirty.

“It's really just to learn about how other people do things,” said Joseph Wujek, of Battle Ground, Wash. “And I have more failures than successes, but that's how you learn.”

Wujek has a natural vegetable garden on his property, meaning he uses no chemical treatments on his plants, allowing them to grow at their own pace.

His garden is one of nine featured on Clark County’s Natural Garden Tour , a self-guided tour on Sunday, June 23 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

“Essentially, we're here to highlight how beautiful natural gardening can be,” said Bethanie Collette with Clark County Green Neighbors . The first stop on last week’s “pre-tour” for hosts and volunteers was at Gregg Andrews’ garden in Vancouver. Plants are native and for the most part are left to grow as they please.

“It is completely and totally natural in the sense that he is finding out ways to cut his water usage, to not use any synthetic chemicals and to plant things that want to be here,” said Collette.

It’s exactly the type of garden the county is highlighting on the tour: free of pesticides, insecticides, fungicides or any other chemical damaging to our watersheds.

“It might take a little bit more labor of love,” Collette said. “But it's better for human health, environmental health and public health.”

Wujek joined on the pre-tour as well and easily gleaned several ideas from some of the other stops. 

“You get a community of people with this kind of knowledge of the area, and it can be very helpful,” he said.

“The space that he's using to gardening is kind of pretty edible, focused, and it's also a bit smaller than others, so he makes use of those vertical climbers,” added Collette.

The goal of the tour is to get the community to consider the impacts of their gardening techniques, from choosing native plants, composting and more. Booklets with more information and details, including a map, can be found online or hard copies are at  Heritage Farm in Vancouver .

“You're your own tour guide,” Collette said. “You can decide how long you want to spend on a site, how short you want to spend on a site, how you want to move through the space. If you want to talk to any of the volunteers or gardeners, or if you want to just completely immerse yourself in the nature and the beauty of it all, it's up to you!”

On July 20 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., you can tour nine gorgeous gardens while supporting an important cause. Attendees will receive a map with all of the homes on the tour.

The Brunswick in Bloom Garden Tour is a fundraiser for Oasis Free Clinics, a free primary care medical practice and dental clinic serving uninsured adults in the Midcoast.

Tickets are $35 in advance and $50 on the day of the tour, when there also will be a raffle for a painting by artist Kat Logan.
