9 Best Ways to Travel from Orlando to Port Canaveral

The two closest airports to Port Canaveral are the Orlando International Airport (MCO) and the smaller Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB), which are located 45 miles and 66 miles from the cruise terminals respectively.

This guide covers transportation options from both airports to Port Canaveral, including detailed information on:

Shuttles from Orlando to Port Canaveral

  • Private transport from Orlando to Port Canaveral
  • Unique transportation options from Orlando to Port Canaveral
  • Large group transport from Orlando to Port Canaveral
  • And much more!

Whether you’re looking for the quickest trip between the two destinations, the most budget-friendly option, or anything in between, keep reading to discover the nine best ways to travel from Orlando to Port Canaveral.

There are three ways to travel by shuttle from the ‘Magic City’ to the cruise terminals on the cape. The first is with independent shuttle services, the second is with official shuttle services from the cruise lines, and the third is with hotel shuttle services. We’ll break down the pro and cons of each!

1. Independent shuttles from Orlando to Port Canaveral

Port Canaveral is the second busiest cruise terminal in the world after the Port of Miami, so a seemingly endless amount of shuttle companies have popped up to satisfy the demand for transport between Orlando and the port.

The shuttle services are shared and typically cost around $30 and up for the round trip per person, but the price can go down when you have a larger group with more passengers. Start your search with this list shuttle companies:

Go Port Canaveral – Website

Star Trans VIP – Website

Ace Luxury Transport – Website

Cortrans Shuttle – Website

Cocoa Beach Shuttle – Website

Tropicana Transport – Website

Smart-Two.com Shuttles – Website

Spaceport Transport – Website

Mears Transportation – Website

Of course, there are plenty of shuttle services to choose from and plenty of online threads and reviews that can suck of hours of your time while you browse. If it all seems a bit overwhelming, consider an official cruise shuttle service or hotel shuttle services instead.

2. Official cruise shuttles from Orlando to Port Canaveral

Many cruise lines like Disney and Carnival offer their own shuttle services for their passengers from Orlando to Port Canaveral and back again. Each package is different, so speak to your cruise when booking to iron out the transport details and prices as well. Often, these shuttle services are more expensive than third-party options like those listed above, but they’re also more reliable and, if they’re running late, your cruise won’t leave without you.

3. Hotel shuttles

Some hotels in Cape Canaveral offer full packages for cruise passengers that include transport from Orlando to the hotel and the hotel to the cruise terminals before your cruise, and then from Port Canaveral back to Orlando when you return to Cape Canaveral after your trip.

If you’re planning to spend the night in Cape Canaveral before you set sail, these Fly, Cruise, and Snooze packages – from hotels like Comfort Inn and Suites Cocoa Beach and Courtyard by Marriott Cocoa Beach-Port Canaveral in this roundup by USA Today – can save you a significant amount of money on your trip.

Private Transport from Orlando to Port Canaveral

Skip the shuttles all together and choose private transportation between the airport and the cruise terminals with taxis, ridesharing apps like Uber and Lyft, or with a car rental.

As you might expect, taxis are one of the most expensive options to travel from the MCO and SFB airports to Port Canaveral. TaxiFareFinder estimates the rates from the Orlando International Airport to the terminal are about $126 without the tip per car (but remember, this price does cover up to four people). From the Sanford International Airport, the trip is a bit longer so the fare is also higher at $151 per car each way. Luckily, ridesharing services like Uber and Lyft have much more affordable prices.

5. Uber and Lyft

Unsurprisingly, Uber is less than half the price of a taxi.

From the Orlando International Airport to Port Canaveral the trip will only run about $59 per car. For a group of four, that makes the ride $30 per person round trip, which is the same as the cheapest shuttle services but much more convenient because it doesn’t require booking ahead or worries about late shuttles or no-shows.

The only downside to using Uber instead of a shuttle service is that the price can vary based on traffic and surging, but usually, the app can predict that before you call the ride. From the Sanford Airport, an Uber to Port Canaveral will cost about $78 each way.

6. Car Rental

Car rental services can be a good choice for the trip between Orlando and Port Canaveral, but only under certain circumstances.

There are many companies to choose from at the airports that also have offices near Cape Canaveral, so a one-way rental is usually possible, but does often come with an extra fee. If you decide to keep your car for the duration of your cruise, you’ll need to factor in the parking fees as well. Even with this in mind, car rentals can be a budget-friendly way to travel around Florida, especially if you plan to explore more of the state before or after your cruise.

One extra tip for the trip: there are toll roads on the route from both the Orlando International Airport and the Sanford International Airport, but they can be avoided by simply checking the ‘Avoid Tolls’ option in Google Maps when you calculate the route.

From the Orlando International Airport avoiding tolls does add significant travel time and distance to the trip, taking it from about 45 miles to 60 miles and adding 30 minutes of travel time. From the Sanford Airport, the drive without tolls is about the same length as the one with them and will take you via FL-46 E and I-95 S. This route takes an hour and seven minutes to drive the 60-mile route.

Unique Transportation Options

We’ve covered the most common transportation options between Orlando and Port Canaveral and the cheapest options, but what about the ones that are the most fun?! Add some flair to your trip and rent a limo, party bus or exotic car – or even charter a helicopter – to get from Orlando to your cruise ship in style.

7. Limo or Party Bus

Orlando Chauffeur Services has stellar reviews online and offers a variety of limos and party buses for every group size. Each trip comes with a meet and greet and a professional chauffeur, and gratuity is included in the price. Stretch limos for eight to ten people cost $210 and $240 respectively, while larger vans like sprinter limos and executive sprinters hold 12 and 14 people and will run you $360 for the trip.

8. Exotic Car

The Orlando International Airport is home to the Orlando Exotic Car Collection by Enterprise, which specializes in renting out exciting vehicles like an Aston Martin, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porche, Tesla, and more. Just click here to browse your favorites and then rent something splashy for the trip from MCO to Port Canaveral!

9. Helicopter Charter

In Orlando there are plenty of helicopter charter companies ready and waiting to take you anywhere you want to go. The Heli Team is one of the most popular charter services in the city but you can also explore services from Chopper and Helicopters, Inc. as well. This is certainly the most expensive transportation option from Orlando to Cape Canaveral, but there’s no doubt that it also comes with the most beautiful views!

Large Group Transport from Orlando to Port Canaveral

Are you in charge of a large group traveling from Orlando to Port Canaveral for a cruise? Whether it’s a tour, a family reunion, or anything in between, ensuring smooth sailing from point A to point B when traveling with a large group is crucial to staying organized.

While you could call multiple Uber rides or try to squeeze into multiple shuttles, getting one coach bus is much more simple. Many companies offer charter buses in and around Orlando, and this list will help you start your search:

Pheonix Bus – Website

US Coachways – Website

National Bus Charter – Website

Gogo Charters – Website

Orlando Charter Bus Company – Website

Academy Bus – Website

The prices vary but range around $120 to $180 per hour. However, some companies may require a minimum rental time that increases the price. Most also require calling to get a quote and to book the services, so you can get more details over the phone to find out the exact rates for your group size.

How To Get From Orlando Airport To Port Canaveral

  • April 27, 2023

How-To-Get-From-Orlando-Airport-to-Port-Canaveral

With Port Canaveral’s most convenient airport being located 45 miles away from the cruise terminals, choosing a reliable mode of transportation is important to ensure you board your ship on time. The Orlando Airport (MCO) is a 45-60 minute ride to the port, which can be stressful for cruisers arriving on embarkation day. Between flight delays, unexpected traffic, and other travel hold-ups, every minute counts when you have a cruise to catch. Don’t worry, we will help you compare the most popular methods of how to get from Orlando Airport to Port Canaveral so you can make the best transportation choice.

Shared Shuttles

Shared Shuttles

You can count on pre-arranged shared shuttles as one of the most dependable cruise transportation options. It is also the most affordable, depending on who you book with. Transfers can be purchased directly from your cruise line, however, they charge between $36 – $39 per person, each way. Go Port offers the same quality shuttles as your cruise line for just $29.99. There is plenty of room for luggage as well as greeters available on site to assist you.

Go Port makes it easy for cruisers to get from the Orlando Airport to Port Canaveral. Simply check in at our counter located in Terminal A and we will seat on the next available shuttle to the port. These transfers run on a regular basis from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM, dropping you off right at your ship’s terminal. Booking a pre-arranged shuttle with Go Port provides peace of mind that you will make it to your cruise on time and is often the best value compared to other transportation choices.

  • How long is the shuttle from Orlando Airport to Port Canaveral? The 45-mile shuttle ride from the Orlando Airport to Port Canaveral typically takes between 45-60 minutes, depending on traffic.
  • How much do shuttles cost to get from Orlando Airport to Port Canaveral? Go Port’s shuttles from Orlando Airport to Port Canaveral cost $29.99 per person, while the cruise line shuttles cost between $36 – $39 per person.

How far is it from Orlando Airport to Port Canaveral cruise dock? The exact distance between Orlando Airport to Port Canaveral is 45.3 miles. Depending on traffic, this is 45-60 minutes of drive time.

Flying in the day before your cruise? Go Port also offers  Fly Snooze Cruise  packages that include hotel accommodations, round-trip airport transportation, and cruise transfers — all for one low price.

Rental Cars

Rental Cars

If you plan to arrive in Orlando a few days before your cruise and plan on exploring attractions in the area, having a rental car can be useful. However, for those flying in on the day of their cruise, renting a car to make the 45-mile trip to the port is not ideal. While there are many rental car agencies located right in the Orlando Airport, that is about where the convenience ends.

When you arrive at Port Canaveral, you must return your rental car at the vehicle drop-off area, located in Cruise Terminal 1. You will then need to get a ride to your ship since the area is not walkable unless sailing out of this specific terminal. It is very common for cruisers to get caught up in long lines when picking up or returning their vehicles. This can be especially stressful when trying to catch your cruise or flight home. Overall, renting a car to get from Orlando Airport to Port Canaveral is one of the riskier options.

Rental Car FAQs

  • How much does it cost to rent a car from Orlando Airport to Port Canaveral? The cost of renting a car from the Orlando Airport with a drop-off in Port Canaveral will vary based on the vehicle you choose. Prices start at $184 for a standard car while SUVs start at $187. Keep in mind you’ll also have to pay for gas and tolls, and may even need to rent a bigger vehicle to accommodate luggage.
  • Can I return my rental car at Port Canaveral? Yes, you can return a rental car at Cruise Terminal 1 in Port Canaveral. Keep in mind if you are cruising out of a different terminal, you will need a ride to your ship as the area is not walkable.

Rideshare Services

Rideshare Services

Rideshare services such as Uber and Lyft have become a very popular form of transportation in recent years. Although booking a ride is easy on your phone, waiting around for a driver in heavily-trafficked areas can be frustrating when you are in a time crunch. Rideshares also charge surge pricing, which multiplies their standard fee during high-demand times. This often happens on busy cruise days as thousands of passengers travel from port to port. While the app indicates a standard UberX can accommodate up to three people, you should consider how much baggage you are traveling with as well. Typically, an UberX will only accommodate two travelers plus luggage comfortably, considering the 45-mile ride to the port. With a party of three or four, you will most likely need to request an UberXL, which further inflates the cost. When returning from your cruise, there is also a very high chance you’ll be met with a hefty surge price or get stuck waiting around for a ride to become available. Compared to Orlando, Cape Canaveral is not a big city and there are not as many drivers available when you disembark.

Rideshare Services FAQs

  • How much does it cost to Uber from Orlando Airport to Port Canaveral? An UberX from the Orlando Airport to Port Canaveral is estimated at $62 without factoring in surge pricing. An UberXL, which is recommended for 3-4 passengers, is estimated at $83.
  • How much does it cost to Uber from Port Canaveral to Orlando Airport? An UberX from Port Canaveral to Orlando Airport is estimated at $73 without factoring in surge pricing. An UberXL, which is recommended for 3-4 passengers, is estimated at $102.
  • Can Uber pick up from Port Canaveral? Yes, Uber will pick up at the Port Canaveral cruise terminals. However, it is important to note Cape Canaveral is a smaller city with a limited amount of drivers available. There is a high chance you will be met with a hefty surge price or get stuck waiting for a ride.

Taxis

Instead of ordering transportation through an app, taxis are a more traditional way of catching a ride. While cabs are always available, there are just a few taxi stands at the airport and cruise port — often resulting in long lines. More importantly, there is no flat rate for the journey between the Orlando Airport and Port Canaveral. Under normal traffic conditions, the trip costs an average of $120, but this price is never guaranteed. Luggage space is also limited, so a normal-sized taxi will only accommodate two travelers with baggage comfortably. These factors can make taxis the most expensive way to get from Orlando Airport to Port Canaveral.

  • How much is a taxi from MCO to Port Canaveral? A one-way taxi trip from the Orlando airport to Port Canaveral is estimated at $140. However, there is no flat rate so this price is never guaranteed.

If you plan to stay in one of the Cocoa Beach Area Hotels, shuttle service from the hotel to the cruise port is only $6 per person.

  • Prices: Shared shuttle prices depend on the number of people traveling in your group. For just once person the cost is $45 (round-trip), 2 people is $65. After that prices go up in increments of $10 per person.

Disney Cruise Line Transfer

If you and your family are going on a Disney cruise, Disney Cruise Line offers a transport bus from the airport directly to the Disney terminal at Port Canaveral. There’s a special pickup location at the airport called Disney’s Magical Express. I have personally used this option when taking a Disney cruise.

Service begins around 9 AM, but the first shuttle leaves the airport at approximately 9:30 AM. Make sure that your flight gets in before 1:30 PM, as the shuttle won’t be available after that time.

On the way to the port, the bus will play a informational video getting you pumped up for your cruise.

Reservations must be booked online at least 3 days before your cruise via your Disney Cruise check-in.

If you’re staying at a Walt Disney World Resort, you’ll be picked up by DCL Transfer there instead. Your hotel room at the resort will have a letter with instructions regarding luggage and pickup. Just follow those instructions on cruise day so you don’t miss your shuttle.

  • Price: $39 one-way, $78 round-trip (per person)

Cruise Control Transportation

As many shuttle services in the Orlando area, Cruise Control Transportation is family owned and operated, and friendly and dependable service to their passengers. While on your hour-long drive from the airport to Port Canaveral, you can enjoy free Wi-Fi and cell phone chargers. All vehicles are 2016 or newer.

Passengers with little children need not worry as Cruise Control will provide a free car seat for the little one (while other companies charge extra or make you bring your own). They will also keep track of your flight so they know exactly when to pick you up and will even send you a text message when they’re on the way to get you.

With a 100% money back guarantee, taking a chance on Cruise Control should be an easy choice.

  • Price: $25 one-way, $50 round-trip (per person)

Luxury Transportation & Shuttle Options

Orlando shuttle service.

Orlando Shuttle Service offers professional transportation services to anywhere you need to go when flying into Orlando.

Their website offers a very easy quote feature so you can know how much your transportation with them will cost before you even book your trip. They’ll give you options like shared shuttle, and private cars in the economy, business, and first class & limousines categories.

You can also book a round trip ticket with them, so you never need to worry about having transportation when you need it.

  • Price: Approximately $81 for economy one-way transportation directly to the Port of Canaveral. Price doesn’t include taxes and tolls.
  • Website: https://www.orlandoshuttleservice.com/orlando-vacation-destinations/port-canaveral-cruises
  • Phone number: 407-574-4671

The Black Car Service

In business since 1999, The Black Car Service strives to offer limo services to incoming Orlando travelers that is both affordable, safe, and pleasurable. Their website even includes a flight tracking feature so you can always know the status of your flight’s arrival and departure.

Additionally, if there are any delays regarding your flight, simply contact Black Car Service and they will adjust your pickup time accordingly.

When booking your transportation, you get to choose the type of vehicle depending on budget and how many people are travelling with you. They also offer a free 20 minute grocery store stop, provided you book a round trip.

However, we didn’t see a way to book a round trip service online, so we recommend calling them if that’s what you need.

  • Price: Starts approximately at $95 for one way.

  • Phone number: 877-301-0203

Orlando Tours & Transportation

Orlando Tours & Transportation has been in business for over 15 years. They provide the highest level of ground travel service with comfort, punctuality, and professionalism.

They offer VIP service for you and your family that will take you from MCO to Port Canaveral and pick you up after your cruise and take you back to Orlando for your flight home.

They have a fleet of sedans, vans, SUVs, and a mini-bus. Their prices include meet & greet, booster seats, and a chauffer will meet you at baggage claim.

  • Price: Starts at $180-$210 each way for a Suburban SUV
  • Website: OrlandoToursTransportation.com
  • Phone number: 407-286-0091

SuperShuttle

This is another great way to get transportation to and from the cruise port when you fly into Orlando. They offer your choice of travel: shared ride shuttle, non-stop shuttle (literally means no stops between the airport and your destination), and black car services (provided through ExecuCar).

You can choose one-way travel, but they recommend that you opt for round trip as it’ll save you money. Also keep in mind that a shared ride, though cheaper, is only going to be available if other people have booked transportation for the same route for around the same timeframe.

One of the things we like most about SuperShuttle is the mobile app, which makes it super easy to manage your account and any trips you have booked.

You can also get airline rewards every time you book shuttle service through them. You just choose your preferred program: American Airlines AAdvantage, Delta SkyMiles, Frontier EarlyReturns, Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards, or United MileagePlus. It’s as easy as connecting your SuperShuttle account with your airline rewards number.

  • Price: Approximately $118.85 round trip (Premium Sedan)

Port Canaveral Transportation

Port Canaveral Transportation provides the best in luxury transportation with a wide variety of vehicles to choose from, all depending on budget and the size of your group.

They have base rates each vehicle type, and they provide an idea of cost based on where you’re traveling to. Still, the best way to get an accurate rate is to input your details on the website and choose a vehicle or give them a call.

They also have an app that you can download for the fastest bookings. It is available on Google Play and the App Store.

  • Price: Approximately $199 for a Town Car or 7 Passenger Van, depending on the size of your group.
  • Website: https://www.portcanaveraltransportation.com/
  • Phone number: 407-442-3122

A 20% driver gratuity fee is added to your cost when you book your car, but you won’t have to worry about any other hidden charges or fees.

  • Price: $125 for a Luxury Sedan (1-4 people). Does not include driver gratuity.

How much does Uber/Lyft cost from MCO to Port Canaveral?

Even though this is more expensive than taking a shuttle, it’s my personal preferred method of going to the cruise port. I’ve done it several times and will probably do it again on my next cruise.

There are two benefits to using Uber or Lyft. The first is that you get a private car all to yourself. The second is that you can request a ride whenever you’re ready and not have to worry about the scheduling times of shuttles.

In the past, I have paid anywhere from $60-$80 for a basic car, but a lot can depend on time of day, surge pricing, etc.

If you want or need a larger vehicle, it will likely cost over $100 each way.

Does Amtrak go to Port Canaveral from Orlando airport?

In short, no they don’t. However, there is an option you can take that requires multiple transfers from busses, to a train, and then a shuttle bus to the port. Because of this, I personally don’t see anyone choosing this option because of the time it takes and the pain of carrying luggage with multiple types of transfers.

Also, Brightline does not have a station near Port Canaveral at this time.

port canaveral shuttle service

Deciding which mode of transportation you’re going to take for your cruise out of Port Canaveral all depends on you. What’s best for one person is not best for everyone.

Personally, I just take a Lyft or Uber because I like the convenience of it. I have taken shuttles in the past but waiting in line to check-in, then waiting again for the bus just wasn’t for me.

Whichever you decide, we hope you have a great cruise.

What are the Best Hotels in Cocoa Beach ?

If you want to make the most of your trip to Cocoa Beach, you will want to choose one of the best hotels such as beachfront The Resort on Cocoa Beach . On the other hand, the good value Four Points by Sheraton Cocoa Beach hotel is truly unmissable while Westgate Cocoa Beach Resort is a great place to stay if you appreciate something a little fun and quirky in your hotel.

What are the Best Hotels near Port Canaveral ?

Among the best and closest hotels near Port Canaveral cruise terminal are the Homewood Suites Cape Canaveral-Cocoa Beach, Springhill Suites, Country Inn & Suites Port Canaveral and Home2 Suites by Hilton Cape Canaveral Cruise Port . Most of these properties offer a shuttle transfer and cruise parking for a fee.

Airport transfer shuttle

Some hotels offer shuttle transfers from Orlando International Airport and Orlando Sanford International Airport in Florida, although some outsource this to companies like Cocoa Beach shuttle . If you prefer booking the shuttle yourself, you can always do so. If you decide to use the hotel offered shuttle, you might end up paying a similar, slightly lower or slightly higher shuttle fee to the hotel, than you would be booking on your own.

Again, we suggest you book your hotel depending on your needs rather than their airport transfer shuttle as this can be booked separately.

Another option is to rent a single-way vehicle that can be dropped off at the car rental depot near the port. From there, you can catch a free shuttle to the port. Night stays at most hotels include free parking for the duration of your stay.

As for parking

After making a reservation of your hotel of choice, you can always park at the port . If it works for you, you can also opt for park and cruise. Stay for the night and leave your car at the hotel while on cruise. Rates begin around $6.00 per night for parking.

The decision to stay at any of the hotel mentioned here depends on what you need. Whether you are traveling with family or a pet. If you do not mind staying further inland, you also might end up saving more as hotels near the port tend to cost a bit more. That, however, means you might end up paying more for the shuttle to the port when leaving for your cruise.

Ultimately, your choice of hotel should cater to all your needs and be within your budget. Make sure to check a few hotels and compare to get the best deal.

Taking a cruise from Port Canaveral and looking for an easy place to stay before your trip with a shuttle to the ship?

As one of the busiest cruise ports in the world, Port Canaveral is a popular point to sail to The Bahamas and the Caribbean. And with so many people coming through, that also means that you have plenty of options for a stay right before your trip.

The biggest negative about Port Canaveral is its location. Situated about 45 minutes from the Orlando airport, you have to find transportation to the port before you can start your trip.

The good news is that a number of companies have sprouted up offering shuttle services from the Orlando airport to Port Canaveral.

And once you are near the port, there is no shortage of hotels that offer shuttles to the cruise terminal. While many of these shuttles are included for free with parking packages, you can request a ride anyway, even if you don’t book the package. It may cost a nominal amount ($5-10) but is well worth it.

Below, we’ve arranged two groups of Port Canaveral hotels for cruise passengers. The first are hotels in the area with shuttle service to the Orlando airport and the cruise port. So you can fly in, shuttle to the hotel, and then shuttle to the cruise terminal.

The second group consists of hotels that offer transport to the cruise terminal only.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are shuttle rides round trip between the hotel and the cruise port? While a number of hotels do offer round trip service, some offer only one-way trips. Any package you book will tell you clearly if the ride is roundtrip. If not, you’ll need to arrange alternate transportation to wherever you need to go. There are a number of affordable transport options between Orlando and Port Canaveral that we’ve covered here .

If I need to shuttle to the airport, what’s the earliest I should book a flight from Orlando? Many people fly in for their cruise from Port Canaveral and then fly out the day the cruise arrives back in port. To allow plenty of time, we suggest giving yourself at least an hour after arriving back in Port Canaveral to get off the ship and another hour to shuttle to the airport. We also suggest giving yourself at least two hours before your flight. So if your ship arrives at port at 8:00 a.m., the earliest we’d suggest a flight is 12:00 p.m. It would be more comfortable for 1:00 p.m. or later. One of the US's busiest cruise ports can't keep up with America's love for vacations at sea — but an urgent new terminal will help meet the demand for giant cruise ships

  • Port Canaveral announced new plans to build a seventh cruise terminal by 2026.
  • It scrapped its initial expansion plan because it would've taken longer to build.
  • This article is part of " Transforming Business: Infrastructure ," a series exploring the advancements reshaping US infrastructure.

Insider Today

Florida — home to busy beaches, Disney World, and a cruise industry so successful that local ports simply can't keep up with demand.

The Sunshine State flexes seven cruise ports, three of which — Miami, Canaveral, and Everglades — are among the five busiest in the world.

The state may seem well stocked as far as cruise terminals go. But Port Canaveral is running out of space as demand for these vacation voyages continues to skyrocket.

In 2023 , the Florida port accommodated a record 6.8 million cruisers and 13 homeported ships, leading to an all-time-high revenue of $191 million — more than 80% of which came from its cruise operations.

In 2024, it expects to add another 500,000 passengers to that total.

The influx in demand has left Port Canaveral at "a point where we're starting to turn business away," John Murray, its CEO, said at a press conference earlier this month.

The proposed solution? Expand — and quickly. The port announced plans to build a seventh cruise terminal on its north side by 2026, scrapping its initial proposal for one farther south. The latter would've taken longer to build, but "we need it in two years," Murray said, adding: "Maybe sooner."

The proposed terminal would be at the port's "underutilized" North 8 berth. When complete, it could accommodate the world's largest cruise ships, including Royal Caribbean's new 1,198-foot-long, 9,950-person-capacity Icon of the Seas .

Murray said the project would be "self-funded." There's no word yet on the cost, but a spokesperson for Port Canaveral told Business Insider that the existing berth would make construction cheaper than that of previous cruise terminals. The most recent one, completed in 2020, cost $155 million.

Before unveiling these plans, Port Canaveral intended to build its next terminal in an area known as Bluepoints Marina, farther south. The project would've taken three to four years to complete — too long a timeline for Port Canaveral.

A new cruise terminal "has become more urgent and necessary now," Murray said.

Along with a seventh terminal, Port Canaveral plans to build a 3,000-car parking structure and improve the roads leading into and out of the parking lot.

Expanding parking on land is just as important as in the water: Cruise lines have been increasingly developing private islands and destinations in the Caribbean, often visited during three- and four-day cruises. Murray said these shorter sailings typically bring in more vehicular traffic than their five- to seven-day counterparts.

Wooing cruise lines operating on these itineraries could be especially important for Port Canaveral, which is farther north from the private Caribbean destinations than Miami's and Fort Lauderdale's popular ports.

Competition is stiff. In January, MSC Group announced that its cruise lines would move their operations to Miami. In late 2023, Disney Cruise Line unveiled a new terminal at Port Everglades.

"A place like Port Canaveral is continually thinking about retaining the business it has and, of course, capturing some of that business," Ross Klein, the founder of CruiseJunkie.com and a professor at Memorial University of Newfoundland, told BI.

But not everyone is excited

While an influx of travelers can be an economic windfall for nearby restaurants and hotels, not all locals are happy about the new cruise terminal.

The world's largest cruise ships can accommodate more than 7,000 guests. That's a lot of travelers — and traffic, which is a concern for Jamie Glasner, the owner of the Bluepoints Marina-based fishing charter Fin and Fly . (BI spoke with Glasner before Port Canaveral announced its terminal in the North 8 berth.)

"These cruise ships come in, and the traffic is backed up for miles," Glasner told BI, adding that other local business owners complained "about it all the time."

"The traffic is a nightmare. This is crazy," he said.

"It used to only take us 10 minutes to get home," Glasner said. "Now it's taking me an hour."

Cruise travelers accounted for roughly 840,000 cars at Port Canaveral last year, Murray said in late 2023. At the time, he said that updates such as a "pay-on-arrival" parking system and the increased use of facial recognition by US Customs and Border Protection helped improve the flow of traffic.

To lessen traffic stress, the port wants the state to widen the nearby freeway and replace the drawbridge connecting the north and south halves of Port Canaveral with a higher, fixed bridge. The latter often opens for passing ships, further jamming up the roads.

However, these proposals have yet to be included in the Florida Department of Transportation's budget, "so we will continue to make noise on that," Murray said during the announcement of the port's seventh cruise terminal. "We can't shut down operations at Port Canaveral because the state can't get the road infrastructure in a timely manner," he added.

But love it or hate it, the cruise industry continues to grow . And the sooner Port Canaveral can build a new terminal, the happier it, and cruise lines, will be.

"We're going to do what we have to do to get this up and running as quickly as possible," Murray told reporters.

Port Canaveral reveals first ships that will use new cruise terminal

Port Canaveral commissioners this week approved the first of a series of contracts for construction of a new cruise terminal on the port's north side. Port officials also revealed two of the cruise lines expected to use the new terminal.

The new terminal — being referred to "Terminal X" for the time being — will be built on the current site of North Cargo Berth 8 and directly across from Cruise Terminal 5.

Commissioners on Wednesday unanimously approved a $1.45 million increase in a purchase order with AtkinsRealis USA for marine improvement design at North Cargo Berth 8 that will be phased in for use of the berth for cruise ships. Phase 1 of AtkinsRealis' project will be design of a pier extension and mooring improvements, with Phase 2 including a bulkhead parallel to State Road 401 between Cruise Terminal 5 and North Cargo Berth 8.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

Port officials announced earlier this month that they would transform the North Cargo Berth 8 site into a cruise terminal and parking garage that they want to be completed by July 2026.

The port's announcement pushes back — but does not eliminate — the port's previously announced plans to build a $175 million south side cruise terminal and parking garage at the current site of Bluepoints Marina. Under those plans, the marina operation would move elsewhere at the port before the cruise terminal opens.

Port Canaveral CEO John Murray said there is no total cost estimate for the cruise terminal and parking garage at the site of North Cargo Berth 8. But it is expected to be less than the cost estimate for the proposed south side terminal because some of the needed infrastructure already is in place at the North Cargo Berth 8 site.

What ships might use new terminal?

Cruise terminal plan: Port Canaveral announces plans for new north side cruise terminal at cargo berth site

Murray said Cruise Terminal X will be large enough to accommodate the world's largest cruise ships. It will be used by two or three cruise lines, in contrast with some of the port's terminals that are used exclusively or predominantly by one cruise brand.

Murray said Terminal X will be used for "the extra-large vessels that need the extra berth length and the larger-sized terminal for passenger flow."

William Crowe, the port's vice president of engineering, construction and facilities, told port commissioners that the first ship to use the new cruise terminal could be the Norwegian Joy , which will be joining the port lineup in November 2025. It is possible for the terminal to operate while final construction is still progressing. The Joy will predominantly sail seven-night voyages to the Caribbean out of Port Canaveral, with some four- and five-night voyages to the Bahamas.

Another ship that could use the new terminal is the MSC Grandiosa , which will start sailing from Port Canaveral in December 2025.

However, port officials emphasized that those plans are tentative, and could change, based on the progress of the terminal's construction and other factors.

Amended MSC operating agreement approved

Expanded MSC presence: MSC to base second cruise ship, the Grandiosa, at Port Canaveral starting late next year

In a separate vote, port commissioners unanimously approved an amendment to the port's operating agreement with MSC that will roughly double the guaranteed annual revenue Port Canaveral receives from MSC, with the addition of the Grandiosa. That will give Port Canaveral two home-ported ships, as the Grandiosa joins the MSC Seashore.

Under the current operating agreement, the annual guaranteed fees payment from MSC to the port is about $6.84 million. That will increase to $13.16 million after the Grandiosa joins the lineup. It will rise to $14.52 million the following year and to $14.95 million the year after that.

The port also will get more parking revenue from MSC cruise passengers, with the second ship and resulting increased passenger counts.

"This is kind of a big deal," Canaveral Port Authority Chairman Micah Loyd said. "It's been in the works for quite some time."

Loyd noted that MSC is "moving up the ranks" among cruise lines at Port Canaveral, in terms of passenger counts.

The Grandiosa will sail seven-night voyages from Port Canaveral to the Eastern and Western Caribbean, while the Seashore will sail three- and four-night voyages to the Bahamas.

Additionally, the MSC Meraviglia will continue its weekly port-of-call deployments to Port Canaveral.

MSC cancellations cut port's April revenue

Port Canaveral Chief Financial Officer Michael Poole reported that the port's operating revenue during April fell short of projection by 6.5% because of five canceled cruise ship sailings.

Port officials said those April sailings included two on the Port Canaveral-based MSC Seashore and three on the New York-based MSC Meraveglia, which makes port-of-call stops at Port Canaveral. The cancellations ― which were announced by MSC after Port Canaveral completed its budget projections last fall ― were the result of construction work MSC is doing on its private island in the Bahamas, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve. That reduced the total number of cruise sailings from Port Canaveral in April to 74, down from a projected 79.

A few additional MSC cancellations were expected in May.

Port officials were not concerned, however, about their financial results. The port's total operating revenue for the first seven months of the budget year that began Oct. 1 is at 2.3% above projection, and total profits are at $44.76 million.

NASA Starliner launch to send astronauts to International Space Station: Where to see liftoff

Nasa astronauts butch wilmore & suni williams will fly aboard a boeing starliner spacecraft & ula atlas v rocket to international space station..

Godspeed, Starliner. After an initial attempt, Boeing's  maiden crewed flight  has been rescheduled, delayed and now possibly ready to launch.

Boeing is preparing to launch its  Starliner capsule on its first crewed mission from Launch Complex 41 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station . And parts of the Southeastern Coast of Florida may get a peek at the United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket lifting off into the sky.

As of Thursday, May 30, Starliner has a launch date of Saturday, June 1 (see below). If the launch time and date changes, this story will be updated.

On board the rocket will be two NASA astronauts. Flying this commercial crew mission are  Barry "Butch" Wilmore and Sunita "Suni" Williams , both Navy test pilots. They have each flown in space twice (more info about them below).

Day or night, watching a rocket launch on the beach is  so  Florida. But can you see a rocket launch liftoff from Cape Canaveral all the way in Daytona Beach to Fort Pierce?

Weather permitting and depending on cloud cover, yes. We have suggestions on where and how to watch a rocket launch from Volusia County to the Space Coast to the Treasure Coast (just keep scrolling) along with information on NASA's Boeing Starliner rocket launch.

If you're on the Fun Coast of Florida, here's where to see liftoff of the ULA rocket

If you're on the Treasure Coast, here's where to see NASA Starliner launch

What is Boeing's Starliner?

Boeing's Starliner spacecraft will transport NASA astronauts. The company calls it the  Crew Space Transportation (CST)-100 Starliner, or simply “Starliner ." Set to launch no earlier than Saturday, June 1, 2024, it will make history as the first spacecraft to ferry humans from Space Launch Complex 41 in Cape Canaveral. The launch pad has been the site for historic missions beginning with the Titan rockets in 1965 and including the New Horizons deep space probe, the Voyager spacecraft, and even the Curiosity Mars rover.

Starliner will be launched with the help of a United Launch Alliance (a partnership between Boeing and Lockheed Martin) Atlas V rocket. The Atlas V rocket has launched from the site since 2002, but this will be the first time it carries astronauts to space.

What launches from where? Years after space shuttle retirement, Florida chases nearly 70 launches a year

Who are the NASA astronauts flying into space for Starliner launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida?

The two NASA astronauts flying this commercial crew mission are  Barry "Butch" Wilmore and Sunita "Suni" Williams . Both are Navy test pilots. They have each flown in space twice and both bring a wide variety of experiences to the flight.

Williams was originally a helicopter test pilot before switching to flying jets. She's preparing to fly to space for the third time, as the crew test flight pilot.

This will be Wilmore's third spaceflight as well. Before becoming a NASA astronaut, Wilmore was a U.S. Navy captain, fighter pilot, and test pilot, accumulating more than 8,000 hours of flight time. Wilmore flew the FA-18 Hornet and T-45 Goshawk, playing a role in missions during Operation Desert Storm, Desert Shield and Southern Watch.
