Fossil Rim Wildlife Center

Fossil Rim is a 1,800-acre wildlife preserve that is home to 1,100 rare and endangered animals that roam free in natural habitats. Started in the 1970s as a collection of exotic animals, Fossil Rim's focus has evolved into a mission for conservation of endangered animals, some on the brink of extinction. Primary importance is placed on the protection and proliferation of these fragile species; their successful breeding programs mean it's not unusual to see baby animals throughout the preserve.

Most visitors to Fossil Rim come for the scenic safari park tour, a 9.5-mile drive through hills, forests, and grassy plains. From the comfort of your car, you may see as many as 50 species of exotic animals, including cheetahs, wolves, giraffes, rhinos, antelopes, zebras, emus, and ostriches. Roll down your window and you may just get a visit from a giraffe or zebra asking for a snack. Halfway through the drive, take a break at The Overlook Café for delicious food surrounded by spectacular vistas. Visit the Children's Animal Center petting zoo, then browse the Nature Store for unique souvenirs and gifts.

Spend a day or two at Fossil Rim to experience an authentic wildlife safari in Texas. You'll come away with a deeper appreciation of the animals we share the planet with, as well a greater understanding of the importance of protecting and preserving them.

If your explorer wants their own wild animal adventure, spend the day at Fossil Rim Wildlife Center with free-roaming animal tours and cabins sleeping near the wild animals. Fossil Rim is located in Glen Rose at the edge of the Texas Hill Country with breath-taking panoramic views on 1,800 acres. This wildlife refuge has over 1,100 animals, including more than 50 species of native and non-native animals, and focuses on conservation and education.

Fossil Rim has different options for viewing animals, including driving your own vehicle or taking a tour through the wildlife refuge. Discounts include weekday and senior citizen pricing discounts, and children 2 and under are free. If you want to feed the animals from your car, you can purchase a bag of animal feed for $7 (limit one per vehicle). No reservations are needed to drive through Fossil Rim in your own car, however guided tours and lodging will need advance reservations.

For a kid-friendly guided tour at Fossil Rim, jump in a safari truck to discover animals roaming wild in a natural habitat. Choose between the Safari Tour, the Crack O Dawn Tour (same as the Safari Tour just earlier and 25% cheaper), or the Behind the Scenes Tour. Kids 2 and under are free, and ADA-accessible vehicles are available by calling in advance. All ages are welcome on the Safari Tour and Crack O Dawn Tour, however the Behind The Scenes Tours are restricted to ages 7 and older and closed-toed shoes are required. The Behind the Scenes Tour views animals not visible to most visitors on the paved roads such as wolves and black rhinos.

Located halfway through the Gosdin Scenic Drive, you will find a scenic Overlook, Children’s Animal Center, Overlook Café, Nature Store and restrooms.   The  Overlook Cafe  serves up yummy food and drinks, including fresh salads, burgers, sandwiches, hot dogs, chicken strips, corn dog nuggets and more.  Gluten free and vegetarian options available.   The Nature Store is large with many kid-friendly items.   

The Children’s Animal Center allows visitors a hands-on experience to pet and brush the goats, listen to the cockatoos talk, view tortoises, pot-bellied pigs, red wolves, black-footed cats, and Attwater’s prairie chickens. 

Spend the night at the Lodge at Fossil Rim or the Foothills Safari Cabins. Enjoy a bunkhouse breakfast while watching the addax, sable antelope, gemsbok, waterbuck, and deer graze.

Know Before You Go

No pets allowed on Fossil Rim property. Check website in case of closure due to inclement weather. Summer, weekends and school breaks will have longer lines. Arrive early to avoid lines and view the animals before mid-day naps.

Fossil Rim: A Safari in the Southwest at Glen Rose, Texas

Fossil Rim located in Glen Rose, Texas is just 2 hours drive from Dallas. Fossil Rim wildlife center is home to giraffe, ostrich, zebra, rhino, kudu, cheetah, addax, and other exotic residents.  It is one of the best drive through zoos and wildlife preserve in the US – a great safari experience right here in Texas! On this 9½ mile Scenic Drive  you can feed the animals from your car window. Or you take one of their Guided Tours. 

Kids love feeding the animals with the feed that you can buy at the entrance .  We have a giraffe fan in our family, he grew up with Jeffery the Giraffe by his bed and frequent visits to Toys-r-us to catch a glimpse of Geoffrey in action there.  If you are not from the US and don’t know who Geoffrey is, check him out here .

A Safari in Glen Rose Texas at Fossil Rim

Once you buy the tickets at the entrance at Fossil Rim in Glen Rose and start your driving on the loop around the park you will see all the animals out and about in action. We saw rhinos sloshing around, ostrich having a race with each other, kudus nibbling on the grass.  We even had some come to the car anxiously looking for food while others with bellies full from previous encounters with park visitors didn’t care for more of the feed. We had a giraffe with a droopy tongue following us around for a while! We even had a staring contest with a zebra !!

Fossil Rim has a couple of lodging options – A rustic ranch house lodge and Safari Tents . Foothills Safari Camp are tents that are made to look like safari tents in Africa. A two-acre fenced enclosure overlooking one of Fossil Rim’s most popular wildlife watering holes, where an ever-changing variety of animals, from elegant sand hill cranes to families of waterbuck, can be viewed.

We did the Fossil Rim Safari as a day trip from Dallas, staying at the Foothills Safari Camp is on our bucket list! It would be a wonderful experience to see how the kids do before planning a big Safari trip to Africa.

Dinosaur Valley State Park

Not too far from Fossil Rim is a special Texas State Park!  At the Dinosaur Valley State Park you can trace the footprints left by dinosaurs in the bed of the Paluxy River in what is believed to be the edge of an ancient ocean million of years ago.  The foot print areas are roped off for people to view and to preserve them. Fossil Rim Wildlife Center works to aid in the conservation of animal species under the threat of extinction in the wild. Fossil Rim use these three key strategies to help fulfill their mission – conservation breeding, research and education. Fossil Rim’s large and open spaces provide the ideal situation for successful conservation breeding programs of some of the species that are in peril. They have also been successful in breeding cheetahs, Attwater’s prairie chickens, black rhinos, white rhinos, Grevy’s zebras and several wolf species .  While some animals born in Fossil Rim are reintroduced to the wild, some animals leave the safari park to populate zoos or other conservation centers in the US and abroad.

Fossil Rim is located one hour southwest of Fort Worth and two hours from Dallas via US 67. Approximately three miles west of Glen Rose, turn left onto County Road 2008. In addition to the regular scenic drive, you can also offer other fun programs like the Discovery After Dark, Sunset Safari and dinner, Feed Run, Behind the scenes tour etc.  The feed is about $8 per car.

Where to stay in Glen Rose, TX

While we visited Fossil Rim as a day trip from Dallas, you can easily spend a weekend basing yourself in Glen Rose, TX.  Glen Rose is also home to some excellent golf courses, good bluegrass music, and Dinosaur Valley State Park where you can hike and bike on scenic trails and see the dinosaur footprints.

Located in a peaceful corner of the Fossil Rim park with incredible views, The Lodge has spacious rooms and the stay includes hot breakfast and a scenic wildlife drive. Exclusively available to the Lodge and Foothills Safari Camp overnight guests, there is also the option to experience a Morning Safari Tour or a Behind-the-Scenes Morning Safari Tour – both at a discount from standard rates. The guests are picked up right after breakfast, so there is no need to drive anywhere and will be dropped back off at their automobiles. Staying inside the park gives you a preview of what an African Safari might be like.

Inn on the River is another option, a meticulously restored Inn that offers nice dining, personalized service for family and romantic getaways in Glen Rose, TX.

The foothills Safari Camp is perfect for two people who want to experience an overnight stay at the Park.  For families, you would need to rent more than one Camp.

Tom Mantzel, a Fort Worth oilman, never imagined that the 1,400-acre exotic game range he purchased outside Glen Rose in 1973 would grow into a hugely popular drive-through zoo. The roaming animals do not, however, make the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center a zoo. It’s the throng of visitors that arrive in cars or board one of the many tour buses that the site has. The 9.5-mile route that swings through the fields where grazing herds of waterbuck, addax, and gemsbok roam is congested during rush hours.

I suppose I’ve become pampered from all of my African excursions. Watching antelopes fight when surrounded by SUVs with children hanging out of the windows is difficult to enjoy. But at Fossil Rim, I found a hidden gem: Foothill Safari Camp, a collection of seven modest cabins located away from the resort’s posh bed and breakfast.

The cottages are situated on a 2-acre meadow that overlooks view in a small lake and is each furnished with two twin beds, a private bathroom, and central heat and air. These sparse accommodations are like being backstage at a boisterous performance. The entire activity happens hundreds of miles distant. You can spend some quiet time here with the animals.

My 7-year-old nephew and I decided against driving through the park and instead chose to sit on a blanket with their binoculars and observe the animals as they passed by. Fallow deer, sable antelope, an addax herd, and two jackrabbits were among the wildlife they irritated. The sun’s reflection in the late-afternoon sun caused their extraordinarily tall ears to flame crimson. A male sandhill crane confidently strode by them and nearly knocked my champagne bottle over.

The little on-site pavilion is where breakfast is served. Additionally, this is the only location to board the Morning Safari Guided Tour, a feeding excursion that is exclusively available to overnight guests. Before the gates open, you’re on the road, and by noon, you’re back at your cabin. Perfect timing for a picnic and snooze.

Safari Camp at Foothills At Fossil Rim Wildlife Center

African wildlife visits Texas at the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center. Over 1,100 rare and endangered creatures can be encountered on the beautiful 9.5-mile route that winds through the 1,800-acre preserve. To observe over 50 different species of wild animals, such as cheetahs, wolves, giraffes, rhinos, and more, you may either stay in your car, secure a space on a guided tour, or even spend the night at a safari camp or Lodge.

When was the last time a zebra’s head popped through the window of your car? Or perhaps a giraffe bit into your hand? A safari through Glen Rose’s stunning Fossil Rim Wildlife Center will allow you to get up and personal with a variety of exotic animals while creating lifelong memories.

A 1,800-acre wildlife sanctuary called Fossil Rim is home to 1,100 unique and endangered creatures that are allowed to roam freely in their natural habitats. Fossil Rim began as an exotic animal collection in the 1970s, but today it is dedicated to the protection of species that are in danger of going extinct. The preservation and expansion of these vulnerable species are given first priority, and because of their effective breeding operations, it’s not unusual to observe young animals all over the preserve.

The magnificent safari park tour, a 9.5-mile drive over hills, woodlands, and grassy plains, draws the majority of visitors to Fossil Rim. You might witness up to 50 different types of exotic creatures from the luxury of your automobile, including cheetahs, wolves, giraffes, rhinoceroses, antelopes, zebras, emus, and ostriches. If you roll down your window, a giraffe or zebra might stop by and beg for food. Take a pause at The Overlook Café midway through the journey for delectable meals surrounded by breathtaking views. Visit the petting zoo at the Children’s Animal Center before looking through the Nature Store for uncommon gifts and souvenirs.

Want to get close and personal with the animals? Numerous guided tours are available through areas of the preserve that are off-limits on the beautiful drive at Fossil Rim. The unique excursions available include bike trips, early morning food feedings, and “Behind-the-Scenes” tours, to name a few. There are lodging possibilities at Fossil Rim as well. Stay in an African-style safari tent with a view of regions where you may see wildlife in action for the ultimate outdoor experience, or choose rustic luxury in one of The Lodge’s well-equipped rooms.

To go on a real Texas wildlife safari, stay at Fossil Rim for a day or two. You’ll leave with a clearer awareness of the value of maintaining and protecting the animals with which they share the earth, as well as a deeper appreciation for them.

Cabins At Foothills Safari Camp In Fossil Rim

The property is conveniently located on the northernmost tip of the Texas Hill Country and is reachable from Waco, Austin, the DFW metroplex, and other nearby cities.

Fifty acres of native live oaks and cedars, as well as a seasonal creek that empties into the Paluxy River, make up Skybox Cabins. Their three horses, two cows, two dogs, and one cat all roam the grounds and enjoy meeting visitors. The cabin balconies offer the ideal locations for viewing sunrises, sunsets, and the many stars in the night sky, and the Dinosaur Valley State Park boundary is less than a mile away. Only youngsters over 18 are allowed to stay for reasons of safety and to provide the guests with a tranquil and pleasant atmosphere.

The Nesting Place

The Birdhouse, which was first introduced in June 2017, is their primary cabin. This cabin, which was inspired by a treehouse, has a bridge leading from a platform in the trees to the second level. The inside steps and railing were completely cut and installed by Yvan using cedar from their farm. The Birdhouse also has a balcony on the second story, a tiny kitchenette, and a covered patio with a fire pit and lounge chairs.

La Tour debuted in July 2018 and is situated on a ridge between two enormous red oak trees. Yvan’s chats with his grandfather about the French Pigeonnier of the 17th century served as the inspiration for the design. An industrial but cozy interior contrasts the natural exterior. Two balconies, indoor and outdoor dining options, and a kitchenette with amenities are available to guests, making them ideal for those planning a longer visit.

A hybrid cabin, The Nest combines elements of a treehouse and a bohemian home. From the portal entry to its Texas cedar observatory, this vacation retreat is absolutely unique. You won’t want to leave this “Pinterest perfect” cabin once you get there.

The newest addition to Skybox Cabins is The Hive. They combined a traditional A-frame design with the cozy treehouse atmosphere that the visitors adore. Their largest cabin to date sleeps two people and has space for dining and relaxing. The enormous porch that encircles the trees is the ideal place to unwind.

The Glamp, a stunning hybrid of an outdoor camping experience with all the comforts of a standard Skybox cabin, including AC/Heat, is now available. The solitary bell tent, which is on an elevated platform beneath a cover of trees, has wood floors and electricity and is completely equipped. The unattached structure, which is close by, has a small kitchenette and a full bathroom. Diners have the option of dining under the stars and sparkling lights or relaxing by the fire pit to take in the sunset and toast s’mores.

Experience Foothills Safari Camp Fossil Rim Overnight!

They offer overnight stays at the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, close by all of the animals.

The Lodge and the cabins at Foothills Safari Camp are about as close as you can get to sleeping outside while on a safari in Africa without leaving Texas. Tom Mantzel, the guy who founded this wonderful wildlife park, first built the house that is now known as the Lodge. Five bedrooms are available in a three-story building. A covered deck wraps around the second floor, providing visitors with an elevated perspective of the fields surrounding The Lodge and the creek that flows through the grounds.

The Hummingbird and Egret rooms, which are located on the first floor, each include a closet, a dresser, and a fireplace in two full-size beds. Near the end of the hallway, they share a bathroom.

These rooms each have a magnificent deck that is easily accessible through sliding doors. The porch looks out into the meadow in front of the home, where a variety of their animals can be seen in their natural settings, including herds of sable or addax antelope.

Although a hot breakfast buffet is supplied each morning and is included in the cost of lodging, Fossil Rim Executive Lodge Director Nick Itayem may make evening meals upon request on Friday and Saturday when a menu is offered.

Family-friendly items, including books, a pool table, board games, and a few binders with information about Fossil Rim and the local wildlife, may be found in the common area on the first floor. Additionally, there is a wet bar with lovely stained glass where adults may relax and have a drink or two. The Lodge and Foothills Safari Camp currently allows BYOB.

The Parrot and Attwater rooms, the residence kitchen, and another common area where visitors can unwind and take in the view are all located on the second level.

A favorite among guests is the Parrot room. The driveway is directly outside the room’s private patio area, making it simple to get to. A King-size bed, armoire, and modern Jacuzzi tub are all features of the Parrot room’s large bathroom.

The common area, located on the second level of The Lodge, has a fireplace, a television, board games, and a library stocked with educational books on a range of subjects. The Parrot is right down the hall from the Attwater room. The room in question contains a king-size bed, an armoire, and a full bathroom. With the driveway leading directly up to the private patio and a magnificent view of the meadow surrounding the home, The Attwater is also quite convenient.

The common area, located on the second level of The Lodge, has a fireplace, a television, board games, and a library stocked with educational books on a range of subjects. On the second level, there is a complete kitchen that makes a wonderful space for family get-togethers and meals while you are there.

The full-sized bathroom has a double-sized Jacuzzi tub, a walk-in shower, and a wardrobe. The Lodge offers one of Texas’ most distinctive views and is a great “home away from home.”

The Foothills Safari Camp is located further into the park. There are seven huts with two twin beds scattered throughout this fenced-in, two-acre area. You may enjoy one of the wildlife park’s best vistas while staying at Safari Camp. Each cabin has a bathroom with a shower and a vanity. Two twin beds that can be joined together to make a third are integrated into the room.

One of their primary watering holes is directly in front of the camp, providing a magnificent view of their wildlife. The camp also has a gazebo with glass walls where you can enjoy the scenery and wildlife while being air-conditioned.

Foothills Safari Camp is ideal for that family vacation you’ve been considering because it has two acres to explore. Spend time together; a variety of outdoor games have been set up.

Executive lodge director Nick Itayem takes great delight in serving up delectable food to overnight visitors.

Your stay at The Lodge or Foothills Safari Camp includes access to a drive through the animal park, Wi-Fi, Dish Network television, and a full breakfast buffet served each morning. Dietary preferences can be catered for with 72 hours’ notice, and the hotel staff is available around-the-clock. On Friday and Saturday, evening cuisine can be made for visitors upon request when a menu is presented.

Each of their eight Wolf Ridge Nature Camp bunkhouses has room for up to 14 people. Each one has a sink, toilet, and shower.

Giraffe picks up 2-year-old girl from bed of pickup at Texas drive-thru safari

GLEN ROSE, Texas – It was quite a scary moment for one family during a recent visit to a Texas drive-thru safari.

According to the Toten family, they were driving through the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center in Glen Rose on June 1 when they decided to stop and feed the giraffes.

The Toten’s 2-year-old daughter, Paisley, and her mother were in the bed of their pickup when a giraffe lifted the toddler into the air.

“Paisley was holding the bag, and the giraffe went to go get the bag, not her, but it ended up getting her shirt, too, and picked her up,” said Jason Toten, Paisley’s father, in an interview with KWTX .

Luckily, Paisley wasn’t lifted too high before the giraffe dropped her into her mother’s arms.

“As soon as she went up, her mom yelled, ‘Hey!’ and the giraffe let go,” Toten said. “My heart stopped, my stomach dropped … it scared me.”

Following the scary incident, which was caught on video by a car behind them, they went to a gift shop and got Paisley a toy giraffe because “she deserved it.”

Despite what happened, the family said they plan on returning to the park in the future.

According to the wildlife center, visitors are allowed to ride in the bed of a pickup if an adult is riding in the back with them and everyone is safely inside the vehicle.

Visitors are also allowed to feed the animals at the park, where exotic and endangered animals roam free.

Dramatic footage captured on a safari ride in Texas shows the moment a giraffe grabbed a young girl who was offering it food on Saturday, June 1. Lindsey Merriman said she and her family were at the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center in Glen Rose when they witnessed the incident unfold a few cars ahead. “My daughter was recording a giraffe eating out of people’s hands and dipping its head in sunroofs,” Merriman told Storyful. “We were 3 cars behind a red truck and saw the giraffe accidentally grab a little girl’s shirt along with the food and lift her from the bed of the truck.” According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the child was a two-year-old girl. Her father told the Star-Telegram he believed the giraffe was aiming for the food in his daughter’s hand, but grabbed her shirt instead. The video shows the child being dropping into an adult’s arms. ‘It just grabbed her’: Giraffe picks up toddler during family trip to drive-thru safari

GLEN ROSE, Texas ( KWTX /Gray News) - A family in Texas says they went through quite the scare when recently visiting a wildlife center.

According to the Toten family, a giraffe accidentally picked their toddler up out of the bed of their truck when they were visiting the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center on June 1.

KWTX reports that park visitors get to drive themselves along a path where exotic and endangered animals roam free at the center.

Visitors are also allowed to feed the animals.

The family said Paisley, 2, was in the back of the pickup truck with her mom feeding the animals when the giraffe grabbed her shirt and lifted the little girl into the air.

Paisley’s father, Jason Toten, said the incident was caught on video by a car behind them.

“We stopped to feed the giraffes and I turned around to look out the back window,” he said. “That’s when I saw the giraffe kind of digging around and then it just grabbed her.”

According to the Toten family, it appeared to be a complete accident and they didn’t break any rules.

“Paisley was holding the bag, and the giraffe went to go get the bag, not her, but it ended up getting her shirt too and picked her up,” Toten said.

Thankfully, Paisley didn’t get too high up before the giraffe dropped her.

“As soon as she went up, her mom yelled, ‘Hey!’ and the giraffe let go,” Toten said.

Paisley’s father said she ended up falling into her mother’s arms without anyone getting hurt, but it still was a scary moment.

“My heart stopped, my stomach dropped … it scared me,” Toten said.

Afterward, Toten said they went to the gift shop and got Paisley a toy giraffe because “she deserved it.”

The family said they do plan on returning to the park in the future.

According to the wildlife center, visitors are allowed to ride in the bed of a truck if an adult is riding in the back with them and everyone is safely inside the vehicle.

A family in Texas got more than they bargained for when they took their 2-year-old daughter to a drive-thru safari ... because a giraffe snatched the kid up ... quite literally!

This wild encounter from over the weekend was captured on camera, showing the moment little Paisley got lifted up and dropped by a hungry giraffe while she and her family were visiting the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center in Glen Rose, TX ... cruising through in their truck.

Paisley was riding in the truck bed with her mom when her dad stopped so they could feed a giraffe ... and that's when the giant animal reached down for a bag of food the kid was holding, grabbing hold of her shirt.

The giraffe lifted Paisley up in the air with its mouth, frightening the girl's parents. Fortunately, all it took to get the giraffe to let loose was Paisley's mom shouting, "Hey!"

Paisley fell back into her mother's arms and somehow wasn't harmed by the animal encounter ... though her daddy told KWTX, "My heart stopped, my stomach dropped … it scared me."

Exotic and endangered animals roam free at this facility BTW -- that's why there's a bunch of animals out and about without any barriers -- and visitors can drive down a path and feed the critters. Obviously, things can get a little hairy though ... like it did here.

Paisley was holding the bag of food down by her chest when she got snatched ... and FRWC says it's best to hold food pellets above your head when trying to feed giraffes ... probably for this very reason.

Despite the scary moment on the trail, Paisley's parents say they will bring her back again. After their safari ended, Paisley's parents bought her a giraffe stuffed animal at the gift shop.

No harm, no foul, it seems.

A Texas family had quite the scare at the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center on Saturday, when a giraffe picked up a toddler.

The Toten family says they were feeding a giraffe from the bed of their pickup truck when the animal accidentally grabbed 2-year-old Paisley's shirt.

Paisley's mom was sitting in the truck bed with her while she fed the giraffe from a brown paper bag. While attempting to get more of the food, the animal accidentally grabbed Paisley's shirt and lifted her into the air.

In a video taken by the mother, you can hear Paisley's mom yell before the camera swings wildly as she leans forward to catch Paisley. The giraffe quickly dropped Paisley back into her mother's arms.

Paisley's father, Jason Toten, saw what happened from the driver's seat while looking out the back window. He says the grab was clearly accidental and that the family did not break any rules.

“Paisley was holding the bag and the giraffe went to go get the bag, not get her, but ended up getting her shirt too and picking her up,” the father told KWTX .

No one was hurt, but Jason Toten describes the brief moment of panic during the incident.

“My heart stopped, my stomach dropped… it scared me.”

Little Paisley ended up getting a toy giraffe from the gift shop because she "deserved it," according to the father.

Despite the incident, the Toten family says they enjoyed the visit to Fossil Rim and plan to return sometime.

Toten family followed wildlife center's rules

Fossil Rim Wildlife Center is a nonprofit conservation center near Glen Rose, Texas. It features a drive-through safari, where various animals roam free along the path.

Families are encouraged to ride in their own vehicles for a self-guided drive through 7.2 miles of Texas hill country, according to the center's website . Visitors are also allowed to feed the giraffes as they pass through the area, as long as they're fed by hand.

The website also granted visitors permission to sit in the bed of trucks, as long as at least one adult is also in the bed. However, as of June 6, "guests are no longer permitted to ride in the bed of pickup trucks," the website states.
