Muslim Travel Etiquette: Halal Essentials To Pack In Your Luggage

Throwback to last year when I had the opportunity to travel overseas with friends of different faith. We all had the same amount of baggage space but the moment our luggage were unzipped, some essentials were seemingly questionable in a good way. I have always thought that packing for travel is the same for everyone, but having to include halal essentials just makes the travel extra special. It was a conversation starter for some and an opportunity to share more about our beautiful religion, namely Islam. Therefore, I present to you a list of things that every Muslim should include in their luggage before traveling. Arranged in alphabetical order to make it easier for you to remember each and every one of them, may it benefit insyaAllah.

1) Beneficial Reads

Some travels are as quick as 45 minutes while some others may take up to 16 hours or more! Best is to have beneficial reads to accompany during the journey; it can be self-help books, general knowledge or even Islamic reads. The best times are those which are filled with efforts towards being a better person. It too is part of the sunnah of Prophet Muhammad SAW, to be better than yesterday.

2) Cleansing Wet Wipes

With its light-weight properties as well as how it is manufactured into small packaging, this is definitely a must-have! Wipes too help cleanse the utilities especially when sharing accommodations with others. Point is, to keeping it clean in our own capacity as cleanliness is part of the sunnah of Prophet Muhammad SAW. It is also a plus-point for parents traveling with babies, an essential to keeping the little ones clean.

3) Comfortable Coordinated Clothing

Deciding what to wear during a trip is the last on the list for most travelers because no time should be wasted amidst any trip. But it is inevitable that we want to still dress modestly even when we are in such on-the-go situations. Everyone feels the need to  look good  while staying comfortable and adhering to the guidelines of the religion. Now, coordinated clothing might just do the work. Pick a few complimentary shades of clothing for your trip. This way, no matter which clothing piece that you pick out of your luggage, it will still match and leave you with a presentable look in minutes.

4) Halal Snacks

And when that is the case, most times the options for convenient stores or stops for food are sparse. Thus, packing halal snacks in your travel luggage might just be the trick to fill the tummy until the next food place comes around. At the same time, you need not worry of looking for snack carts and go through the hassle of identifying those which are halal to consume or otherwise.

5) Mini Rice Cooker

Credit: Amazon If you do not know by now, rice cookers do wonders. From the basic of cooking rice to steaming food, boiling water, preparing a meal and most times it withstands the baking heat too. Thus, to have a  mini rice cooker  with you for your travel will definitely be a life saver. Especially for those who travel to countries with little halal food options, a trip to the grocer's and whipping up a simple meal every day is a solution to many hungry travelers. Knowing the simple omelette and rice recipe or any  three-ingredient pasta dish  should suffice.

Credit: Amazon To have a miswak (also known as siwaak) and using it for teeth cleansing is part of the sunnah of Prophet Muhammad SAW. It is a stick or twig used for such purposes. It is recorded in the book of Hadith of Sahih al-Bukhari, Aisha reported that Prophet Muhammad SAW said, "Siwaak cleanses the mouth and pleases the Lord". Mindfully practicing the acts of the sunnah of Prophet Muhammad SAW will be the reason for a blessed travel.

In times of emergency when nature calls, it is indeed a tricky situation. Upon cleansing yourself properly, if the accommodation does not provide any proper water pipe spray, having a  pitcher  along a trip is essential. Containers or travel jugs which have similar functions to pitchers should be fine too, so long as the water can be transported from one place to another.

8) Portable Charger

Living in a modern era of advanced technology, there are so many things which are reachable at the tip of one's fingers. Although electronic devices are highly dependable, to have portable charges in hand is a must. This is such that we can access useful applications such as locating  Qibla direction  , checking of  prayer times  online, searching through the net for nearest  praying spaces  and  halal restaurants . Especially when going out and about, instead of relying so much on charging ports, these devices can still be charged at any point and at any time during our travel.

9) Prayer Items

Credit: Amazon As much as we enjoy our time traveling, our prayers should still be at the top of our priority. And as with prayer, bringing along prayer items needs to be included too. Items such as our prayer garments to cover the aurah during prayer, a handy travel prayer mat to pray anytime anywhere and a non-alcoholic perfume to smell fresh and nice. Best if you can bring along a spare set of prayer items, in case your friends that are traveling with you might not have the necessary items in hand.

10) Spray Bottle

Credit: Amazon As much as the pitcher is of concern to help cleanse ourselves when water pipe sprays are absent, a  small spray bottle  is a need too. In cases where water is scarce or out of reach, the spray bottle will definitely be a life saver to perform ablution. This can come in handy when traveling from one city to another on a long bus ride, train ride or even when you are roaming around the country during your visit.

11) The Holy Quran

It is to affirm the remembrance of Allah throughout any journey and to ensure that the voyage be a blessed one. It is most helpful, especially in times of difficulty, that the recitation of the words of Allah will surely bring ease to any worried heart. No trip is a smooth one at all times but peace is assured with The Holy Quran.

12) Wudhu-friendly Cosmetics

Credit: Amazon Wudhu-friendly cosmetics or some might be known as  Halal Cosmetics , ranges from lipsticks to eye shadow palettes and even nail polish. This is most essential for our Muslim ladies in cases where praying-on-the-go is required. Such steps like make up removal might just be a bit too time consuming and uncomfortable. With wudhu-friendly cosmetics, both the application and the removal will be a breeze. The ladies need not worry anymore to find a suitable location to attend to such needs.

Time to take out your packing list and ensure that these halal essentials are packed nicely in your luggage. When that is done, off you go for your travel. Remember, every great travel is accompanied with a well-equipped luggage and a grounded intention for a blessed journey. Bismillah and bon voyage!

Ultimate Travel Packing Tips for Muslim Women and Hijabi

After travelling for over as a hijabi Muslimah 13 years, most of them with hand luggage only, I have definitely picked a thing or two about the best travel packing tips for women. 

Men have it so much easier than us, with fewer accessories, layers and toiletries. So packing for them is so much easier. My husband takes 10min to pack his suitcase most of the time. 

I, on the other hand, have to plan that my hijabs will match my dress and that the layers i need will match the rest of my outfit. Add to this that I am a plus size woman and not Xs size, and the fabric and the amount it takes to pack and bulk is overwhelming. 

I also hate travelling and carrying a suitcase with me, especially since I have a back problem. 

So if you are wondering how to travel light as a hijabi, keep reading.

Over the years, I developed a system that helps me pack everything I need, still manage to have some stylish outfits and also travel mostly with a carry-on even when I have a toddler in tow. 

This is cheaper, less overwhelming, and much more fun. 

Hijabi’s Guide to Packing for a Holiday 

Let’s tackle my favourite packing tips for a stylish, enjoyable Hijabi holiday without further delay. 

1. Planning your days 

I always say failing to plan is planning to fail. This is true when it comes to saving money on your holiday when living your best life as well as when it comes to travelling. Knowing what you are doing during your holiday will help you plan what you need to bring without feeling overwhelmed. 

Let’s be honest, I am sure you like my pack and only wear 20% of the things you brought, even though you have probably paid for the extra weight and want to take everything you might need just in case. 

No matter how many days you go for, always write down on a piece of paper the days as well as the activities you are thinking of joining on your trip, plus what you think you will wear for that date. 

Nothing is set in stone, you can change your mind, but it is so much easier when you have a clear plan; this helps you with your travel packing but also reduces overwhelm during your trip. 

You don’t suffer from decision fatigue when you are on holiday because you can’t decide if you want the blue top or the red top. 

Here is what my list normally looks like when I am planning my holiday. 

Day / Activity / What to Wear 

So for example, on Tuesday we are sightseeing so I can wear my jeans with the blue top, cardigan, and loafers.

I usually will wear the same jeans 2-3 times and my underlayer top once and top twice. I sweat a  lot and hate wearing the same thing. Plan your outfits this way, and I promise you it will make your life so much easier. 

2. Capsule Hijabi Wardorbe 

I try to be as minimalist as possible in my daily life as well as my travels.

Not perfect, but I decided a few years ago to just buy things that are 10/10 and make me feel good about myself no matter the price (within reason and budget of course).

Having a wardrobe of clothes that make you feel confident and good and are quality over fast fashion makes your decisions easier. I also don’t subscribe that you have to have only safe tones etc. Yes, they are OK for the basis, but as hijabis, we want some colour which you can achieve via your scarves or tops. 

Find your personal style and what you like, and slowly buy pieces that you love!

I gravitate towards the colour blue since it is my favourite one, so it is easier to have similar shades of that when I travel. Usually, my dresses are the one thing that has patterns and a pop of colour. But my stable pieces are more classic. 

When packing for a trip, it is easier this way to actually pack only what you need and able to combine different outfits.

Your jeans, for example, match your blazer, but your underlayer tops can be some bold colours. 

Combining 1 blazer with 2 tops and jeans, you have two outfits or more if you dress them up or down. They also take up less space. 

Another thing that I personally like is cotton and natural fibres. This is even trickier to pack because they are also bulkier, but as I mentioned above, I go sweat a lot, and although polyester is easy I try to avoid it, especially in warm weather countries. 

My hijabs are in neutral colours most of the time as well as my turbans. My most wearable ones are in beige or blue, they also slim my face and are easy to combine with pretty much any colour. So making packing easier. 

I also look for hijabs that are cotton or viscose, as they are breathable and cool and don’t require a pin to hold them in place. I used to lose so many safety pins and then would get frustrated with my hijab. 

All my footwear is also minimalist and classic, so it matches everything I will be wearing. 

3. Look for Hijab Friendly Outfits in Good Fabric

As Muslim women, we need to dress modestly and cover which also means we need to travel with more clothes and layers.

I don’t always shop from Muslim online retailers, although I do love shops like Modanisa and Riva. I find great maxi dresses from Mark’s and Spencer and Next in the UK. 

Last summer, I found a couple of fabulous Maxi dresses in cotton that was so comfy I wore them pretty much all summer and took to several trips with me. 

As a Hijabi and as a Muslimah, it is easier to wear maxi dresses when you go out exploring during the day and bring accessories to dress it up or down with Hijabs and belts. My suitcase always contains one maxi dress at least.

This way, I have two days out of my trip covered, and it doesn’t take up a lot of space. Also, you can mix and match and style with a cardigan or a sweater, and the maxi dress becomes a maxi skirt. 

Many of my accessories are also multi-purpose such as my bags and belts, which are reversible or can be used in different ways.

Also, I don’t carry a prayer dress or abaya with me since I use the maxi dress as one. Saving me space in my luggage.

I am looking for dresses with long sleeves, so I don’t have to wear anything else underneath or I Islam-fy them if needed. Like this video, I did here. 

4. Don’t buy travel-size toiletries 

Travel-size toiletries are the biggest scam; you pay more money for a smaller size when you can just put your creams into reusable pouches and save space and money. 

The only travel-sized thing I have bought recently was my loose powder because transferring a £40 powder out and into another container is guaranteed disaster. 

I used to travel with the standard travel bottles you get either from hotels or just those silicone ones we find on amazon. 

Now, I switched to pouches, and I am telling you my packing game changed. They take so much less space than bottles, and you can put enough for the trip you need. Honestly, I wish I had discovered them years ago. 

This way, you can also fit more in your liquid allowance transparent bag.

Here are the ones I bought on Amazon and still going strong. I know there are talks about removing the limit of 100ml, but even if they did, do I need to carry with me a 100ml shampoo for seven days when I wash my hair only 2-3 times, and I used about 20ml in total? 

When you sit and think about it, it makes sense. We always get that fear of what if I need this, in reality, I’m sure you are going to a place that has shops, and if you really need something or have an emergency, then you will find it there. 

For my make-up, I use some of the tiny bottles they give you when you taster products. I usually put my make-up or BB cream there and enough for my trip. They are smaller and easier to move around in the transparent bag. I bought so many toiletries bags, and I only use them when I travel with luggage because they are so bulky. 

Also, remember that only liquids need to go into the airport security bag. I use one bag for my liquid and one for the non-liquid toiletries that I still need but don’t have to take out. 

5. Vaccum Bag your Hijab friendly outfits

My ultimate packing tip is to vacuum bag clothes. I have been doing this way before becoming a TikTok trend. I remember about 13yrs ago; I used to ask the housekeeping to get me the vacuum because back then, they didn’t have those handy travel-size vacuums. 

I swear by vacuum bags when travelling because they are so handy for us Muslim women, especially plus-size women. If you are going on a Halal beach holiday, you will also need your burkini or Islamic swimwear and we know how bulky those are. 

Even if you travel with a suitcase, I always vacuum my things because they take up less space and I can take more shoes and bags. 🙂 My vice. 

I have these from Amazon and they are excellent

I travelled for three weeks with my hand luggage and about ten outfits just because I managed to vacuum most of them. 

I have used packing cubes as well; I just don’t find them as effective as the vacuum bag in terms of space saving. Yes, they are better for organising your things, but I prefer to have a couple more outfits and everything in one bag. 

I do take a second one in case the first one breaks or to use as a laundry bag for dirty clothes. 

6. Buy a Soft Case Carry-on

Yes, I know this might be controversial.

Still, if you are planning to explore a budget airline, especially in Europe or going for Umrah with Wiz Air, you want to avoid paying exorbitant fees for luggage. My best travel tip is to buy soft case carry-ons as you can fit more things in them. 

Soft cases are easier to mould around your clothes and the vacuum bag, and you can fit things in empty spaces. They usually only have one compartment, so it is easy to fit everything in. 

I love my hand luggage from Perfois, and they do last a good while; I have two of them, and they are great quality for a good price, especially on sale. 

7. Get yourself a Travel Steamer 

Ha! It is weird to vacuum your clothes and then have a steamer, but it works! Hotel irons are often burned and have ruined so many of my dresses.  

I started travelling with a small travel steamer about ten years ago and never looked back. I got laughs from people, but they ended up asking for my steamer as they got white marks on their clothes. I was totally vindicated, lol. 

As Muslim women, we do have more fabric to iron, and if you take my advice above and don’t travel with many polyester tops, you will need to steam our creases. For me, the two essential things that always make it into my suitcase are the above bags and the steamer. I don’t think I can travel without them. 

This is the one I have from Philips and it is small and powerful.

8. Make sure you take advantage of the free under-seat bag

This is something I started doing recently, and I have to say I regret not doing it earlier. I used to travel with my handbag and my hand luggage, but I was missing extra things I could bring. 

All airlines allow one small bag under your seat, laptop bag or handbag.

After my daughter was born, I used to bring my Tiba and Marl backpack for her, which is amazing if you are a new mom.

However, a few years ago, I bought my mum this weekend bag from Parfois, and since then, I have bought one for myself because it not only fits for free under the seat but also holds so many other things. Usually, these bags also don’t have a weight limit, so I put there my laptop, my Dyson Airwrap ( I know! but it’s a game changer) and my toiletries. 

All heavy items. 

This way, they are accessible, but also, there is a pocket that fits over my hand luggage, so I don’t have to carry the bag. Plus, I always manage to have my cross-body handbag, which holds my passport and other important documents and my wallet. 

You’ll get so much more baggage allowance this way, and I have been doing this with Ryanair and Easyjet recently. 

9. Prayer Mat and Other Muslim Travel Tips 

Depending on my destination, I might travel with a travel prayer mat. There are so many cute options on the market that It comes in handy, especially on long-haul trips in non-Muslim countries where I will have to pray in the airport. 

Most airports do have prayer rooms or contemplate rooms 🙂 and I will use my hijab but again not the most hygienic thing. I like the Takva prayer mats because they have some cute designs. 

My Quran is on my phone as an application, so it is easy to access, and I don’t have to carry it around. 

I also use the app Qibla Connect for my Qibla prayer direction, and I find this to be a good and correct indication of it. Gone are the days were I used to have a compass with me. 

I have used the app for several years and have tested it in Muslim countries to see how accurate it is. In most cases, it is very close to the actual Qibla direction, even if you’re using the city rather than the exact location. 

To find local prayer times I just google them with the city I am visiting. I also believe the Qibla application offers those once you put your location. As a Muslim traveler I do take advantage of combining. my prayer times making it easy to explore while traveling.

This way, I stay out later, which, with a travelling toddler in tow is a must.

I know many Muslims also want to use a travel bidet, and I know there are several on Amazon. Personally, I don’t carry one with me because I use a bottle in my hotel room if I travel to non-Muslim countries, and it has never been an issue. 

For Halal food, I normally google Halal Food options near me when in my destination, but I also am happy to eat fish and veggies. Pasta and pizza are life, and you can have it anywhere. 🙂 

I don’t plan my holiday around halal food since I believe we miss so much out of an adventure this way. 

Also, if I am writing a destination guide for that location as a Muslim blogger, I copy those on my phone. 

10. Electronics Minimise Your chargers 

I have to say the chargers for my electronics are the one thing I struggle with. They take up space and are bulky.  As a content creator, I have cameras, laptops, phones, drivers, and so much more that it is one of the most stressful things. 

Even there, I try to minimize the chargers I bring and what I use on a trip. 

I recently bought a travel adaptor that is super handy, and although I lost the first one, I bought it again. It is a little bulky, but it is a fast charger and has several ports managing to charge all my devices. This way, I don’t have to carry the adaptors for each piece of equipment I have, and it doesn’t take up much space in the corner of my suitcase.

There you have it, my biggest travel packing tips for Muslim women and Hijabis that actually work. 

I see so many TikTok videos of the perfect packing suitcase, but most are either small women, or they don’t have realistic options for hijab styles and the multiple pieces we sometimes need to wear in order to be modest.

Muslim On-The-Go: 6 Essentials You Must Have in Your Day Bag

Day bags come in all shapes and sizes. Most Muslims who are constantly on-the-go would find that a small bag suffices in helping them get through the day. Some Muslim women might prefer bigger bags, while some Muslim men have the amazing ability to fit everything they need into their big pockets.

Whether you’re a student, working professional or even a busy parent, every Muslim’s bag and its contents are probably their most prized possessions. Packed with all things big and small, it’s important to never forget certain essentials to help you power through the day.

1. Prayer essentials

Despite the hectic lifestyle most Muslims live, it’s important to not miss out five daily prayers. Hence, it’s great to always have your prayer essentials with you wherever you go! Muslim women should pack in a travel telekung (prayer dress) while Muslim men may find the need to pack a kain solat (prayer cloth). For the Muslimahs already in hijab, you might find that carrying hand and foot socks around would suffice to get you ready for prayers.

2. Perfumes and Makeup

Islam encourages good hygiene and cleanliness, teaching us to always be conscious of the way we present ourselves to others. Once upon a time, attar (essential oil perfume) was considered one of the most treasured material possessions of Prophet Muhammad PBUH. Many Muslims take cues from the Prophet by carrying this along. Because it comes in a tiny bottle, it’s easy to take with you and also quick to apply.

For Muslimahs who wear makeup, bring some items along for touch-ups! A quick lipstick reapplication or a sweep of powder fixes those moments when makeup is looking slightly messy from eating or after taking wudhu.

3. Pocket Quran

Reading the Quran is said to soften the hardened hearts and clean dirty hearts. Having a pocket Quran that you can whip out at any time of the day can be a true life-saver. In the middle of a hectic day, reciting the Quran has the ability to relieve you of the stress and anxiety that you’re facing in daily life.

The same can be said for listening to Quranic recitations or reading Quranic verses from a mobile apps like Muslim Pro , iQuran or Quran Majeed .

If you prefer reading the Quran during more private moments, pick up other reading material to get you through those long and dreary train rides to and fro home. Instead of spending those rides hooked onto your phone, getting through a book is a much more productive and meaningful way to spend your time. After all, the constant attitude for learning is highly encouraged in our religion.

5. Reusable Bag

This is one many of us are guilty of missing out. With the plastic pollution being a hot button issue these days, Muslims are reminded to be more mindful in managing their waste especially the use of plastic. Hence, bringing along a reusable shopping bag whilst grocery-shopping is the perfect way to become eco-friendly Muslims! 

There’s also the added incentive since supermarkets islandwide are increasingly charging for single-use plastic bags. Many of these bags come in thin, easy-to-compress cloth material that’s foldable and doesn’t take up much space in your day bag.

6. Reusable utensils

If you’d love to go one step further in being an eco-friendly Muslim, throwing in metal or wooden utensils and straws in your day bag is a great habit to inculcate. This reduces the need to use disposable utensils whenever you pack your food or dine at restaurants.

OK, just look in your bags, and you’ll surely find some painkillers.

You didn’t find any? Even in that little backpack?

Never mind. A cold shower will melt your tiredness away, but where are the soap and the towel?

Can’t you see that you’ve forgotten many important things while there is a lot of unnecessary stuff packed in your bags?

Didn’t you prepare yourself well before traveling ? Didn’t you write a list of the things you’ll need while you’re there?

To avoid this mistake, here are some tips to help you pack your bag for your next trip:

Traveling by Car, Bus, or Train

• Make a written list of the things you’ll need the most, so whenever you finish packing something, check out that item from the list.
• Follow the weather forecast of the country/city you’re heading to in order to know what kind of clothes and things you’ll need with you.
• Get a small handbag to use on your trip (a backpack or cross-body bag is preferred) and another big one for your clothes and personal stuff.
• If the big one is not enough, you can distribute your things between two medium-sized bags. Don’t overload any of your bags. This can damage your bag, what’s stuffed in it, and even your back and hands.
• Take a prayer mat, a compass, and a copy of the Qur’an. You can also bring your booklet of daily remembrances and, of course, Du`aa’ As-Safar (Arabic for “Traveling Supplication”).
• Pack only the clothes you’ll need. If they’re ironed, you should pack them flat; if not, you can take a small iron with you.
• Don’t fold your clothes in the same way you put them in your closet or chest of drawers; the idea is to make good use of a bag’s space. Roll them up tightly and put any breakable stuff in-between them.

Tips for a Happy and Safe Vacation

• Take one-bed sheet and pillow cover just in case you need them.
• Don’t forget your bathing suit or waterproof clothes, a good sunscreen, sunglasses, a head cap, and skin moisturizer if you’re heading to a place with a swimming pool or beach.
• Place the shoes and slippers (the ones that will suit the clothes) you’ve packed in a separate plastic bag inside the main bag or separately in a small one. You can scrunch up old newspapers inside them so they will neither bend nor break.
• Remember to take a first aid kit. Put your vitamins, painkillers, and emergency ointments in a small, separate bag inside the one you’ll carry with you.
• Don’t forget, things for your personal hygiene: towels; soap; a bath sponge; shampoo, shower gel, a hair dryer; body cream; a comb; a hair brush and hair accessories; a nail toolkit; toothpaste; and a toothbrush (you’ll need to keep your white smile and fresh breath!).
• Take small pillows with you if you want to sleep or rest on your way.
• Take, if you think you’ll need them, some high-tech entertainment gadgets like a digital camera, a digital audio player, a laptop, and, of course, the old-fashioned radio.
• For the leisure time you’ll spend indoors with friends or family, have some games like monopoly, dominoes, chess, and playing cards.

Can I Travel With the Qur’an In My Luggage?

Question: Assalam alaykum. Can we keep the Qur’an with my luggage and not in a handy bag during long-distance travel? Also, I want to know if can I travel alone without any mahram.

Can I Keep a Mushaf In My Luggage?

Yes, it is permissible to keep a copy of the Qur’an in your luggage as long as it appropriately covered and kept away from impurities. It deserves to be treated with respect.

It might be easier to just take a digital copy on a phone or tablet when traveling. The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) always choose the easier of two options as long as it was not a sin. [Bukhari]

Can a Lady Travel Alone?

In the Hanafi school, a lady can travel within the traveling distance alone. This is about 48 miles according to some scholars, and others calculate it closer to 57. Pick one and stick to it. [Zayla’i, Tabyin al Haqa’iq, Rida Khan, al-Fatawa al-Ridawiyya]

Traveling beyond that distance was considered impermissible due to many narrations from the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace). Some contemporary scholars do permit travel beyond this distance if there is safety, such as someone to pick her up and drop her off at an airport, for example.

The other schools have some more lenient positions too. The former position is safer and more precautionary, however. Please refer to this answer too.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.  

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
