MERCYFUL FATE is currently working on a new album and recently gave fans a taste of the new material when they debuted a song called "The Jackal Of Salzburg" in Germany in June 2022 as well as at Psycho Las Vegas. The band's current lineup is rounded out by Mike Wead on guitar and Bjarne T. Holm on drums.

As last month's Metal Hall Of Fame gala at the Delta Marriott Garden Grove in Garden Grove, California, Becky Baldwin the bands new Bassist was asked by The Metal Voice if her addition to MERCYFUL FATE as a permanent member has been in the works for a while. She responded: "I guess the idea was floating around for a while, but it's quite recent still, the news that I was going to be permanent in MERCYFUL FATE. But I guess, as any band does when you've got a lot coming up and there's some kind of — I don't wanna say insecurity within the band, because it's not that; it was just kind of, like, a question about how busy Joey was, and I guess it was kind of in the back of their minds. And the way that the fans reacted when I did the tour was very positive. So it was a natural progression, I guess. But yeah, it all just kind of came about very, very recently in terms of being solidly, like, 'Yes, this is what's happening. And you are gonna be a full-time member of MERCYFUL FATE.'"

Regarding how she came to play for MERCYFUL FATE originally, Becky said: "I think the main person for bringing me into the picture was Hank Shermann. So he was the person who suggested me when they started looking at, like, 'Okay, well, actually, this whole list of male bass players that we're looking through, it doesn't have to be a guy. Who else do we know? Should we start looking somewhere else? Because there aren't any women on this list, and maybe that could be a thing, that could work out for MERCYFUL FATE.' And then I was kind of at the top of Hank's list. And then when he showed King and the rest of the management and stuff some of my videos, it was literally the weekend of Bloodstock [Open Air] festival in the summer of 2022. And they were, like, 'Okay, let's go. Let's go to Bloodstock. And she's gonna be at Bloodstock festival. Let's ask her there.'" Source Blabbermouth and The Metal Voice

In a new interview with Sam Acevedo of El Cuartel Del Metal, heavy metal icon King Diamond says a U.S. tour is in the works along with the release of his long-awaited solo album by the end of 2024.

King also confirms the story/concept will be spread through two albums. The first new material King released for the album came out in 2019 with “Masquerade Of Madness. In the interview, King also talks about new Mercyful Fate music, the origin of the band's name, his musical influences, and more.

Last month it was announced that Mercyful Fate and bassist Joey Vera (Armored Saint) have mutually decided to part ways, with King Diamond stating: “Our friendship and respect for each other will always remain the same, and we all sincerely wish each other the absolute best for the future.”

Mercyful Fate then announced that their new bass player is Becky Baldwin of Birmingham, England, who toured North America with the band in late 2022

“It is a great honor to now be a permanent member of Mercyful Fate”, said Baldwin. “I can’t wait to join the recording of the new album. When I joined as a stand-in on the 2022 US tour, the acceptance and encouragement from the fans was exceptional. A huge thanks to the band, team and fans for the warm welcome. See you in Chile and Brazil this coming April.”

And now, in a new interview with That Metal Interview Podcast, Baldwin talks about her experience touring with Mercyful Fate in 2022, and her feelings now that she's a full-time member. She also gives us an update on her band Fury, and their future plans and recordings.

On when we can expect new music from Mercyful Fate, Becky reveals: "My guess is gonna be toward 2025, maybe towards the end of 2025. But it depends how it all goes, 'cause King is working on a King Diamond album first, so we've got a little bit of time there. And they'll have to tour that as well, give it the full world tour treatment and everything. But there is something in the works. I've listened to (Mercyful Fate guitarist) Hank (Shermann)'s demos. He sent me, I think about nine songs, a couple of weeks ago and I've been listening through those. So it's on the way. It's all just been in the works for kind of a while, and now things are just starting to fall into place."

KING DIAMOND Is 'Checking The Possibilities To Really Come Out With Something Next Year'

KING DIAMOND guitarist Andy La Rocque spoke to "The Metal Podcast" about the progress of the songwriting sessions for the band's long-awaited new album. Titled "The Institute" , KING DIAMOND 's first studio LP in 17 years is tentatively due in 2024 via Metal Blade . It will be made available as a two-LP horror concept story, with the second part arriving at a later date. Andy said (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET ): "The last tour we did was in the U.S. And we jumped off that tour in December 2019. And that was right before the pandemic broke out. So since then we haven't been on the road — I mean, not a single show. We've been composing some songs and I've been trying to survive with bands in the studio, because that's what I do. When I'm not out with KING DIAMOND , touring and writing music for KING DIAMOND , I'm a music producer — mostly metal, of course, as you can imagine… I'm constantly working with things, you know, I mean, I'm writing riffs for KING DIAMOND all the time, and what does not fit for a KING DIAMOND song, it ends up like something else in my library of songs."

He added: "We might be able to come out next year for something. I can't really tell you when or where, but we're checking the possibilities to really come out with something next year, definitely."

Asked if he means a new music release or a tour, Andy replied: "A tour. And with the songs. I mean, we're working on that. We have songs. I sent King [ Diamond , KING DIAMOND frontman] a bunch of songs, like, a year and a half ago, and we started working on them, like arrangement-wise and all that. And then MERCYFUL FATE came in between kind of; they did their summer tour in Europe and also a U.S. tour. And then they're gonna record like a single or two, I believe. And as soon as they're done with that, we're gonna go back and pick up where we ended with KING DIAMOND , all the KING DIAMOND songs that we have. And then, of course, King 's going to write his share of the songs too, and all the lyrics and stuff. So it's a long procedure. But we have started."

At last year's Bloodstock Open Air festival at Catton Park, Walton-on-Trent, United Kingdom, King spoke to Bloodstock TV 's Oran O'Beirne about his plans for "The Institute" . "Something with KING DIAMOND , we have a very special thing [planned] for that album," King said. "It's gonna be a two-album story. But KING DIAMOND , we are building something that you will never have seen on a stage before — not that way. And with the light guy, he's never done it that way either. … It's very different, very sick. You will not have seen musicians standing on stage in that type of light. It's gonna be very dark. They have to learn to play in dark areas. It's crazy. I know that our light guy, he can't wait for us to do it. I showed him some pictures that have the kind of feelings I want, the kind of backdrops I want, stuff like that. … This is gonna blow people's minds when they see it, I am a hundred percent sure."

Back in November 2019, KING DIAMOND released its first new song in 12 years, "Masquerade Of Madness" . A month later, La Rocque told The Metal Voice that he came up with the music for the track first before passing it off to King , who "needed to arrange a few things and change just a small few things for making it work with his vocals. And then, of course, he wrote the lyrics for it," the guitarist revealed. "So we [went] a little back and forth until he felt like, 'Okay, this is cool, man. This is the right key to sing in,' and all that."

La Rocque , whose real name is Anders Allhage , discussed his vision for the new KING DIAMOND album with The Metal Voice , saying that it will be filled with great "melodies, of course. Super important. Without melodies, there is no music," he explained. "I'm also envisioning a more organic sound of the album. If you look back to the older albums, when Mikkey [ Dee ] played [drums for the band], for example, it's, like, a little bit up and down in tempo, and that makes it dynamic and also organic. So that's one thing that I would like to hear on the next album, for sure. But building up a dynamic, kind of organic feel, the drummer is a really important thing here, of course. And I know that Matt Thompson [current KING DIAMOND drummer] is the right guy to do this, for sure."

In March 2019, King told Full Metal Jackie 's nationally syndicated radio show that the next album from his namesake band will be "absolutely gruesome" with a story set in a 1920s mental institution. "I chose that because I think it's a very creepy scenario," he explained. "And some of the things that go on that we're gonna show onstage is also things that certainly was going on back then, when medicine was beginning to take a beneficial turn in history and actually being able to help human beings live longer. But there was some experimentation going on, too, that was absolutely gruesome. Some of that is involved in the story, but it's something totally different. Once you get to the second part of the story, you will begin to suddenly understand that, 'What the hell is going on here? What is this really about?' 'Cause there's a whole different story that will not come to you till second part. But in the first part, you're gonna get to know a lot people at a certain place… Some of it takes place here, this world, and some of it takes place in a parallel world. And there's a correlation between what happened to me and what happens to some people in this place and where they suddenly appear. And you will find out why they are there, how they appear there and the places down the road. I won't say too much right now, but it's gonna be very creepy."

KING DIAMOND received a Grammy nomination in the "Best Metal Performance" category for the track "Never Ending Hill" off the band's last album, 2007's "Give Me Your Soul … Please" .

"Give Me Your Soul ... Please" sold 4,500 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 174 on The Billboard 200 chart.

KING DIAMOND released a DVD/Blu-ray, "Songs For The Dead Live" , in January 2019 via Metal Blade Records . The set captures 1987's seminal "Abigail" album in its entirety, twice, and in very different locales: Belgium's Graspop Metal Meeting in June 2016 and Philadelphia's Fillmore in November 2015. The performances feature KING DIAMOND 's current band, comprising of guitarists La Rocque and Mike Wead , bassist Pontus Egberg and Thompson .

King Diamond Announces North American Tour Dates with Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats, Idle Hands

Satanic ringmaster king diamond will tour with uncle acid and idle hands this fall — and has a new album in the works.

After introducing a new live show, as well as music, at festivals across Europe this summer,  King Diamond  is now ready to officially reveal the title and theme for the first studio album in 12 years:  The Institute ! Fans can expect the debut single to arrive this fall and an album in 2020; in the meantime, a tour teaser with a sneak peak of the new stage set can be viewed below:

King Diamond is a Danish heavy metal band formed in 1985 which currently consists of King Diamond, Andy LaRocque, Mike Wead, Matt Thompson and Pontus Edberg.

King Diamond, Michael Denner and Timi Hansen were all originally members of another heavy metal band Mercyful Fate yet they decided to leave the project and pursue King Diamond as a full time commitment. Their debut album 'Fatal Portrait' was released in 1985 which gained one chart position in Sweden.

However after this release the band saw continually increasing success on the US Billboard charts with albums including 'Them' and 'Abigail' selling over 50,000 copies each. The band has been known for its constant line up changes, over fifteen musicians have been part of King Diamond over the years and the two consistent members are vocalist King Diamond and guitarist Andy LaRocque.

By 2001 the band established a core line up of vocalist King Diamond, guitarist Andy LaRocque, guitarist Mike Wead, bassist Hal Patino and drummer Matt Thompson and have continued to tour and record as this outfit. The band is infamous with concept albums and taking their death metal sound to innovative places. Their stage shows often include theatrics and face make up to add to the overall atmosphere of their music. In 2010 the band almost ceased to exist after its namesake and vocalist King Diamond was rushed to the hospital following several serious heart attacks. After undergoing surgery he has made a full recovery and is back performing with the band.

Live reviews

To the Morgue we go. The minute the lights went down and King Diamond hit the stage, we knew this would be a real Halloween treat! As a preliminary to the 11th annual Rock and Shock fest, King delivered the goods and very well too. The concert began with a stage setup reminiscent of a gated cemetery. Actresses in the roles of either old or pregnant women enhanced the effects against a backdrop of screaming guitars and thumping drums. A heavily made up King meanwhile alternated between high pitched singing and guttural growls, the latter delivery of which bore some resemblance to Alice Cooper. I cannot mention titles of songs performed as this artist is relatively new to me and thus not my area of expertise. However, the metal genre has been a favourite of mine for most of my life. The creepy gothic props lent well to the music played, thus fitting the atmosphere to a T! One part I particularly liked was the number toward the end where the old woman came out in a wheelchair and King and a man on the role of a mad scientist put her in a coffin brought onstage and proceeded to have her do a disappearing act. Equally memorable was the woman who during another song, arrived onstage carrying a silver platter. Upside down crosses and Baphomet logos complimented the scene in question well and seemed ona way to allude to old movies such as Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? or Rosemary's Baby.

Report as inappropriate

A King Diamond show is nothing short of theatrical. The sets, lighting and the famously ever-present make up worn by the Danish heavy metal singer lend an almost operatic quality to a King Diamond concert. Every element of the staging and set list has been thought out to provide each member of the audience with an unforgettable night.

Opening with “The Candle” in his concert last month was a fantastic way to get the crowd going. It’s opening is reminiscent of an 80s slasher film with its taunting repetitive opening bars. King Diamond’s falsetto on top of this was a sure-fire way to get the whole audience pumped for the evening of heavy metal awesomeness that lay before them.

Tracks like “The Puppet Master” and “Eye of the Witch” were standout parts of the night for me. King Diamond’s iconic sound, which has been associated with legendary groups such as Metallica, is absolutely unbelievable live. He hits those high notes every time and injects every song with raw, unrelenting energy. This guy is a legend – go see him.

The show was organized, on-time, and the sound was at the 9.5 volume, what one wants at a metal show. Exodus opened for King Diamond and played a modest but strong set of their best work. King Diamond did not disappoint the masses inside with his showmanship and voice quality. Both were outstanding. Right out of the gate GrandMa was rolled onto the stage and helped out of her wheelchair by Diamond. The stage was well designed allowing for Diamond to go up top the band to gesture to the crowd with his upside-down bones cross connected to his mic. Fellow band-mates wielded their axes soundly and precisely. Everything you would expect from quality musicians backing up the legend King Diamond. Rock on ! ~D&B~

I saw them at the Fillmore in Philadelphia. The venue was great. The opening band, Exodus, rocked as usual. The venue was almost filled to capacity an Kind Diamond had a big following.

KD's stage performance was amazing. Not only they had theatricals with additional actors on stage, they were very well rehearsed and performed as if you were listening to a recording.

All band members had great stage presence and overall it was a memorable and entertaining show. I especially liked the actress that was dressing up and acting accordingly for each song. There were hooded characters carrying a casket, in which there was a doll. Decorations and lighting were also dynamic and complemented the band's awesome musical performance.

The King sounded absolutely great. I've been a fan since the 80's, and you couldn't tell a difference between his voice from last night and a recording from 30+ years ago. My wife is not what you would call a fan, but she loved the show too. Great stage set, spooky "institute" backdrop, and a couple of actors to play various roles during about half of the songs. They even performed a new song (the first new material in 12 years, released just last week) that sounded great; I can't wait for the new album. Amazingly, even after all these years, the King is absolutely still in his prime.

I've been waiting years to see King Diamond live in concert! He is one of my favorite singers EVER! This concert was hands down my very favorite concert. Anyone whose a fan would not be disappointed, it's everything you'd expect and more! I will definitely be seeing them again if they come back to my area. \m/

The Abigail Show was worh the wait! I've been waiting since 87 for that experience and it paid off!! Kings voice sounded perfect like it did over 20 years ago. The stage was amazing, the band played incredible and the sound was awesome!!

Fantastic show! The Tabernacle is such a great venue for live music and the stage was the perfect size for all the props. KD's voice was perfect and the band was amazing. I give 5 stars for this show...I'm ready to go again. :)

One hell of a show. Abigail was performed to perfection. Don't miss this show. The sound was unbelievable along with great theatrics. King Diamond always delivers a good hour and a half.

Fucking awesome. ***** 5 stars. His voice still sounds just as good as ever and his show was spectacular. Can't wait to catch him again, hopefully sooner. And closer to where I live.

King Diamond announces North American tour dates with Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats, Idle Hands

After introducing a new live show, as well as music, at festivals across Europe this summer, King Diamond is now ready to officially reveal the title and theme for the first studio album in 12 years: The Institute ! Fans can expect the debut single to arrive this fall and an album in 2020; in the meantime, a tour teaser with a sneak peak of the new stage set can be viewed at: youtu.be/AdoUczDwKh4

King Diamond comments about the upcoming album The Institute : “For reasons unknown to you, it is clear that you have no way of making it to ‘The Institute’ on your own at this point. Therefore, we will bring THE INSTITUTE to you. You don’t want to miss this special opportunity for treatment only we can give you. It could be for your own good, you know…”

In support of The Institute project, King Diamond will embark on a North American tour with Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats and Idle Hands in November/December.

Who are for KING + COUNTRY?

for KING & COUNTRY are a Christian pop duo made up of brothers Joel and Luke Smallbone. Originally from Australia, the siblings moved to the United States as kids and settled in Nashville, Tennessee. After initially releasing music as Joel & Luke, the band rechristened themselves for KING & COUNTRY in 2012 with the release of their debut album, Crave . Their 2014 follow-up Run Wild. Live Free. Love Strong. and 2018 LP Burn the Ships each earned the pair a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album. Further albums in their discography include the holiday-themed A Drummer Boy Christmas (2020) and What Are We Waiting For? (2022).
