How to find cheap flights, what is the best day to buy a plane ticket.

This just in! Airfares offered on Thursdays tend to be the cheapest, according to flight demand on Travelocity in 2021. Tuesday and Wednesday prices are also good, but you may want to prepare your budget if booking during the weekend, as data shows that is when prices are generally at their highest.

What are the cheapest days to fly?

Frequent travelers may already know this, but earlier in the week can be the cheapest time to fly. In 2021, flights departing on a Monday were generally the cheapest of the week, whereas you may pay a premium for weekend flights when demand is usually high. On average, tickets were most expensive for Saturday departures, so if you need to fly out on a weekend, you might look for deals ahead of time.

How far in advance can you book a flight?

Trying to figure out how early you should book your flight? It’s possible to start comparing international airfares on Travelocity up to 12 months in advance. However, it does depend on the carrier as not all airlines release their prices that far out. According to our 2021 flight demand trends, last minute planners can still bag a bargain with some of the cheapest fares appearing 0-2 weeks prior to their travel dates.

*According to flight demand on Travelocity.com from January to December 2021. Savings are subject to change based on departure location, date and destination.

When you conduct a single search on momondo, you can find and compare cheap airline tickets like you’ve done hundreds of searches at once. momondo is completely free to use - with no hidden charges or fees - and the prices you see are never affected by your searches, no matter how many you make. We believe in an open world, where traveling and getting acquainted across borders and cultures is available to us all, so we’re committed to showing you the cheapest flights in our flight finder.
  • How do I find the best price on plane tickets? Choose your destination and preferred travel dates, and we’ll provide you with an overview of the cheapest, quickest, and best flights so you can compare prices and book flights with confidence. Flexible on dates? It’s even easier to find cheap flights by using our Price Calendar (found above your search results), which shows you the cheapest travel dates. This is available on all of our most popular flight routes.
  • How can Mix & Match save me money? Sometimes you can save money by combining flight tickets from different suppliers, and we call that Mix & Match. This means you can book your outbound flight with one supplier, and your return flight with another. If you can save money by combining tickets from different suppliers, we’ll automatically include this option in your flight results and label it Mix & Match. You’ll have to complete two separate booking flows after you select this deal on our site, but it’s worth it if you can save money over a traditional round-trip with one supplier. It’s an advanced way of getting the cheapest flights even if they’re offered by different suppliers.
  • How do I make sure I don’t miss a flight deal? Sign up for Price Alerts on your favorite flight routes and automatically get live price updates, so you can book flights when the price is right. You can do so next to your flight search results or in the profile menu. If you're on our app, you will find Price Alerts in the navigation menu. You can also subscribe to special offers and limited-time flight deals from our partners. Just sign in, go to Notifications in your profile and subscribe to the topics you’re interested in.

Frequently asked questions

What do i need to know before booking a flight.

There are various factors to consider when booking a flight including cost, fare classes, baggage policies, the complications of flying long haul, and complying with airport regulations. To make your booking journey smoother KAYAK has developed a comprehensive flight guide including insights on finding affordable flights, packing efficiently, and utilising the best travel tools.

What is the cheapest day of the week to book a flight?

The best day to book your flight depends on a number of factors, but there are general trends that you can follow to increase your chances of cheaper plane tickets. Based on an analysis of KAYAK data for all flights departing from inside United Kingdom over the last 12 months, the cheapest day to fly for domestic flights is Tuesday. For international flights, Tuesday had the cheapest tickets on average.

Which month of the year are flight prices lowest?

It’s well established that flights in the low season are generally cheaper than ticket prices during the high season. That means that knowing which month to find the lowest priced plane tickets will depend heavily on seasonality and your destination. While avoiding peak travel times can help you keep costs down, our data shows that the month with the lowest priced plane tickets for domestic flights based on all searches made on KAYAK in the last 12 months was January, while the most expensive was August. If you’re booking an international flight, then April is the cheapest month to fly and July the most expensive.

When is the best time to buy plane tickets - Last minute or in advance?

Last minute flight deals are definitely up for grabs, but when exactly to purchase your plane tickets will depend on where you’re travelling to and from. Based on all data for flight searches made on KAYAK over the last 12 months, prices for domestic flights remained below the average price up to 1 week before departure. For international flights, deals could still be had up to 1 week prior to the departure date, with prices remaining below average. If you’re flexible, KAYAK brings you both advance and last minute one-way and round-trip flight deals.

Can flying international flights with a layover save money on airfare?

For many long-haul international flights, flying direct is not possible and you will have to fly with stopover. Some routes will offer both and you could consider flying with a stopover for a number of reasons. Firstly, breaking up what would otherwise be a long-haul flight, taking a rest and then completing the journey might make the flight more manageable. Secondly, prices can also be lower than direct flights, so while it might take longer for you to reach your destination, you could save money. We’ve looked at prices over the last 12 months for the 100 most popular international destinations for KAYAK users and on average, prices for non-stop flights were cheaper than flights with a layover.

Top 5 airlines flying to Anywhere

Flight was canceled so it was not a great experience. Boarded, then deboarded. Delayed, boarded a new plane then deboarded the 2nd plane and flight was canceled. Then booked a fight to Rome and took a train to Venice the next day. Lost an entire day +

My seat was changed at the last minute and I was moved to the last row, right next to the bathroom despite selecting my seat well in advance. I was also made to check my carry on due to space but when I got on the plane there was significant empty overhead space. Picking up my carry on from the luggage carousel added time to my trip which had already been extended due to delay.

All good on Delta's part. Passengers could be a little more courteous to each other.

Screen didn’t play movies, do I was pretty boated the entire flight.

The airport process and boarding were fast. The airplane crew were nice but the food was bland and the seats extremely uncomfortable- my seat had an issue and couldn’t move back and made noise .

Inconsiderate staff, plane was very hot, poor decision-making from the crew.

Flight was delayed due to needing a replacement flight crew. Delta changed the aircraft type in Detroit. One hour delay. But once in the air, good flight

The fight was about 2 1/2 hours delayed, but that was weather related. The flight was also overbooked. But we were in Comfort plus so the flight was fine for us.

Meh. A late flight meant I missed my connections, and a 2pm LAX arrival turned into gettin in after midnight.

Flight was 3 hours late so only had an OK experience

Flight was delayed by an hour and We had to rush and run so we will make it to our connecting flight! And then when we reached Naples, Italy , our luggages were all DELAYED!!! It was a real inconvenience to us!!

United cancelled the flight after a 2 hour delay. The only choice was a 24 hour delay which was then 3 hours delayed.

Everyone on board was great. It was just super late and we missed our connection in Frankfurt, and had to power through jet lag while we waited 4 hours in the terminal. My family missed a big welcome dinner in Berlin.

It was soooo hot I was sweating even at altitude. I know you want people to sleep, but keeping it that hot is stupid!

UK Based crew was great. Very friendly and quick. The seats are just too tight and not comfortable. The plane appeared quite old. Food is better on other non-USA based airlines.

Terrible! After boarding we were stuck on the plane for 3 hours with no air circulation during a heat wave.

Two hour flight delay, it was awful and loss of sleep.

flight delayed, was put on another flight after standby queue, luggage was misplaced and arrived to me 3 days later

Clean and plenty of room for handbaggage. Leg room was cramped compared with the 777 from Frankfurt.

United Airlines was fantastic, however, UnderPricer was a nightmare. I got to the airport 4 hours before my flight. We are moving to New Zealand so had quite a bit of baggage (16 checked items) and so wanted to have plenty of time to get everything taken care of properly. When I went to check in they (United) could only find a ticket for me. The 5 tickets for my children were never officially ticketed. I called Underpricer and they told me it was United's fault and United told me that Underpricer just needs to reissue the tickets, but they refused to. I asked the Underpricer agent to transfer me to his supervisor as I was not getting the help I needed. He told me the supervisor was busy but that he would call me back in 30 minutes. 30 minutes came and went with no phone call. After an hour I called Underpricer back but they would not let me talk to the person I had talked to before, just told me that he was talking with the supervisor and technical support. I called again an hour later, was told the same thing. I tried again later, with only about 30 minutes until my flight was scheduled to leave (meaning I had been at the airport for more than 3 hours with my 5 children trying to get ticketed and board the flight). Also, my husband had moved to New Zealand 3 months prior, I haven't seen him in 3 months, my children hadn't seen their dad in 3 months, we were all extremely eager to get on that flight and get to New Zealand. The situation with the tickets did not get resolved until after it was too late to check our luggage and board our flight. We were devastated. My 11 year old son was in tears at not being able to be on his way to see his dad. Thankfully we were rebooked for the next evening, but that night it felt devastating. We'd been at the airport for 4 hours waiting. My in-laws waited with me and then helped me reload all our baggage and took us home to stay with them for the night. On the newly booked flights we could not sit together - my children were spread throughout the plane. So, even though I had paid extra to select our seats after buying my seats from Underpricer only two of us were able to sit together (thankful that my 11 year old wasn't all by himself, but not happy that my 14 & 16 year old daughters were seated by strangers). I really feel that Underpricer should refund me what I paid for the seating ($120 USD). It was a very frustrating situation and I plan on never using Kayak or Underpricer ever again.

Everything was great except boarding for the flight from Charlotte to Raleigh and seating from New Orleans to Charlotte.

Gate check in of luggage was smooth at DCA and luggage came out fast in IND.

Awful. We had an 8 hour mechanical delay- no vouchers and no kind/courtesy/professional representatives in the entire airport. Not only was it a terrible experience for both my 7 year old and myself, I still have not heard back from American about how they’re going to correct it- I’ve sent 2 or 3 emails about our experience- which was just awful. Not to mention according to national traveling laws, we should be reimbursed… but of course they’re not responding.

PBI to Charlotte was smooth. Charlotte to IAH was an entirely different story though, and I still have not heard back from American on how they’re going to fix it.

The flight was delayed two hours, with no information as to why. The gate also changed several times which was aggravating. Would not fly through DFW again.

My flights had excessive delays, alleged mechanical problems, and overall terrible customer service

Terrible, they canceled my flight due to an issue they had, couldn't fly me into the same place within 24 hrs so had to fly in 2.5 hrs away from my destination and spend even more money. The customer service was terrible (except at the airport in Charleston). Had to call to get my checked baggage fees reimbursed 2 wks later in which one customer service agent was very rude, wouldn't listen and then hung up on me. The second lady I spoke with was actually able to help me with that part thankfully. Would not recommend flying AA.

not enough crew for business class and not great service as a result. underwhelmed overall

The inability to be flexible when you need to change a Basic Economy flight, when your company demands you book through a third party, causes raw feelings about the whole experience. A major airline should realize business and personal plans change all the time. I must save my company money on travel. Even if you have to charge me for the change, I get it. But being so rigid with a policy is not the best customer service.

The offered WiFi on AA isn't worth wasting time or effort on. If you manage to connect it's incredibly slow.

Someone opened my checked bag and stold75 euros Not happy

Terrible airline, NO REFUNDS!! Only credit for another spirit flight

Staffing shortage causes terrible lines and service. Was stranded at the airport due to service

We had a 3 hour delay then no one could find the baggage carousel. So little inconveniences that took up lots of time. I was also separated from the rest of my family because there was a minor who needed supervision.

Very uncomfortable seats that do not recline. My husband had hip replacement 7 years ago; after 5 hours from Maryland to California and another 5 hours back, we had to go to the emergency for the intense pain on his hip joint and soon he will see the surgeon. The cherry on the cake was when at the end of our flight back to BWI, we were prompted by a flight attendant to stretch: "arms right, now left, now reach your toes..." (really? how can we do that as we are sitting on seats with no leg room?) "...and as you are there, pick up any garbage you may see on the floor"!!! wow!

Spirit is very bare bones travel. You definitely get what you pay for. About as comfortable as riding a school bus. The tray table is a tiny little shelf that barely fits a phone, and there is not even a seat pocket to hold anything securely. They have an open bungee cord configuration, that phones fall out of. There are no drinks or snacks, unless you purchase them. Same for wifi, although it wasn’t even available for purchase on our outgoing flight. But the crew was friendly, and the plane was clean, although we did not check the onboard restroom. Basically, if you are looking for a very inexpensive flight to a nearby location, and you don’t care if wifi is available, it works. Our flight was around 90 minutes—Oakland to Las Vegas—so it was not horrible. I would never even consider flying cross country in it. That would be miserable. But for a quick trip of under two hours, it was worth the price.

Spirit cancelled my flight and wouldn’t rebook us for 3 days had to rent a car and drive from Florida to Virginia to get back home.

Both flights were delayed. Flight from LGA to DTW caused serious anxiety as 3 people were removed from the aircraft before take off for disorderly conduct. Extremely uncomfortable to be in that situation. Staff handled themselves okay- definitely could’ve been more professional and deescalated the situation first. No apology for the delays at all. No water, no snack, no nothing. Not a good flight experience.

Arrived to destination 2.5 days late due to cancellations and delays. I was rebooked over 24 hours after the original flight. This would have happened multiple times if I wouldn’t have bit the bullet and purchased another ticket through a different airline.

I didn't like that before both flights we had to wait for an hour sitting on the plane for maintenance reasons while this could have been done earlier. I also didn't like that we had to pay even for water. The small water bottle is 5 dollars. I also didn't like that the ticket didn't include either carry on or check in bag, are we supposed to travel without anything? I'm not happy with that.

No knowledgeable staff at the counter or in a flight crew. No one knew why once flight landed at Philadelphia Airport then it took them 4 hours from runway to gate . Damn they took 4 hours to reach the gate . They messed up whole night for myself and for my kids.

Horrible, first and last time that we use frontier. Kept us in Las Vegas for 8 hours. We boarded original flight at 2 pm right as we were getting ready to leave we were told that plane had issues. Stayed in gate and then after a couple of hours we were told that we were being assigned a new plane and were moved to a different gate. Then after 3 hours they said that the plane had issues and after a while of just being delayed it was cancelled. Thankfully there is southwest that came to rescue. We purchased ticket and left Vegas at 10 pm

Horrible communication about delay of flight and what options were available

Frontier charges 25 for the service of checking in and another 79 for a carry on. Will not take this janky air carrier again.

The trip was unremarkable which is good. Crew was very professional and courteous.

Crew was excellent. Plane was small cramped Airbus A320. Seats were narrow.

Gate agent for Frontier in Sioux Falls was horrible. Some people shouldn't have jobs where they need to work with people. This person tried to control everything and even argued with a Sheriff's Deputy. He seemed to write the law and think he was immune to everything and could do whatever he wanted. What a miserable experience for a lot of people. He even delayed the flight just for on his own actions. The pilots made up the time lost, but why does this person have this job. Apparently nobody cares at Frontier. We do, My wife said she would never fly on Frontier again.

On both our outgoing flight and our return flight, Frontier split up our seats. We were two adults and two small children, one an infant. Both flights were only about half full with full rows of empty seats. Yet, the airline split us up. No, we did not spend the extra $40 per person each way to purchase seat assignments ahead of time. But should we have to do this? If so, then the advertised ticket price was $40 off. What makes this even more egregious is that the plane was not full. So, there was no reason for Frontier to split up our group other than to extract an extra $320. A stewardess even had the nerve to tell me “if you want your family to sit together, I recommend that you purchase seat assignments next time.” On a half empty flight? Ridiculous. We will not be flying Frontier again.

One gate agent in Sioux Falls ruined it for a few people on the flight. It was the usual, that personal item is too large, you are going to have to pay $100 to get it on the flight. One family with a baby were told that they had to have a passport for the baby to get on the flight. Also a Sheriff's Deputy needed to go on the airplane to return a lost cell phone to a minor on the flight. The gate agent would NOT let him go on without a boarding pass. I don't know who this moron was, but the sooner Frontier moves him where he can't interact with people, the better off they will be. Let's just say the deputy did the job that he needed to do and returned the phone to the minor on the plane, even with argument from a gate agent that thought he had way more power than he actually does. Very IRRITATING individual.

Bad experience… crew are extremely strict with personal bags… they overcharge me coz my bag was one inch H

Planning on traveling for the Fourth of July holiday? Here’s how to avoid the rush

NEW YORK (AP) — The Fourth of July is right around the corner, and the travel rush is already heating up.

Millions of Americans are preparing to get out of town sometime in the coming holiday week. That will likely mean busy roads, as well as packed airports and train stations.

Motor club AAA projects that some 70.9 million travelers will head 50 miles (80 kilometers) or more from their homes over a nine-day Independence Day travel period — surpassing pre-pandemic numbers for the U.S. holiday. And the Transportation Security Administration expects to screen over 32 million individuals in airports from this Thursday through July 8, up 5.4% from last year’s numbers.

Are you traveling for the Fourth? Here’s a rundown of what you need to know.

When is the best time to hit the road for July Fourth?

Smooth sailing for travel around any holiday is never a given. But avoiding the most hectic times, when others are rushing out of town, is a good way to start.

If you’re traveling by car for the Fourth of July, it’s best to hit the road in the morning, according to transportation data and insights provider INRIX. Peak traffic congestion varies by location, INRIX data published by AAA shows, but the worst times to drive on, or leading up to, the holiday are generally between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Either way, be prepared for the roads to be jammed.

Image

“Road trips over the holiday week could take up to 67% longer than normal,” Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX, said in a prepared statement.

July Fourth falls on a Thursday this year, and many travelers will likely take Friday July 5th off to extend their trip into a four-day weekend. Drivers in large metro areas can expect the biggest delays on Wednesday July 3 and Sunday July 7 — as travelers leave and return to town, Pishue added.

And if you’re renting a car ahead of July Fourth, the busiest pickup days will be Friday, Saturday and Wednesday before the holiday, AAA notes.

When will airports be busiest?

Airports will also likely be packed all week long — but the TSA expects most people will take to the skies on Friday.

It anticipates that it will screen more than 3 million individuals Friday. That would surpass the agency’s current record for most people screened on a single day, which reached just under 3 million last Sunday.

“We expect this summer to be our busiest ever,” TSA Administrator David Pekoske said, adding that travel typical peaks around Independence Day.

Last year, the busiest day for Fourth of July air travel was also the Friday ahead of the holiday, TSA data shows. If past trends hold, travel will likely be higher on the days before and after the Fourth — particularly closer to the weekend. In 2023, for example, more than 2 million people were screened on the Fourth, which landed on a Tuesday last year, down from 2.88 million the Friday before.

What should I do if my flight is delayed or canceled?

Flights can be delayed or canceled for an array of reasons — from plane-specific mechanical problems to major storms impacting popular travel paths.

If your flight is canceled, airlines are required to provide refunds for customers, even if the cancellation is due to weather . Delays are trickier, because they typically have to meet certain criteria for relief, such as refunds or compensation — but carriers will often give customers to chance to switch to alternative flights, if available, at no cost.

In April, the Biden administration issued final rules that include requiring airlines to provide automatic cash refunds within a few days for canceled flights and “significant” delays. Those rules are set to take effect over the next two years, but the Department of Transportation has a site that lets consumers see the commitments each airline has made for refunds and covering other expenses when flights are canceled or significantly delayed.

Always check your itinerary before leaving home

It’s better to be stuck at home than locked in hourslong traffic or stranded in an airport terminal. Before heading out the door this holiday week, do yourself a favor and check the status of your travel plans.

Was your flight, train or bus ride delayed? Are there are traffic incidents set to disrupt your drive? And what about the weather? A quick look through your itinerary — such as trip updates on a carrier’s website — checking weather forecasts and monitoring traffic safety through services like the 511 hotline or your phone’s navigation apps can go a long way toward avoiding travel misery.

Here are a few more tips to keep in mind:

— Leave early: There are more people everywhere during a holiday week, so lines will be longer and roads will be busier. Give yourself more time to get to your destination or to make your way through airport security.

— Keep an eye on the weather — and not just for your destination: Look at the weather for your entire travel path. Even if it’s sunny skies both at home and the place you’re headed, it’s important to keep an eye out for any storms in between. You may need to do some rerouting.

— Be kind: A trip delay or cancellation can be really frustrating — but if you’re running into disruptions, chances are others are too. Customer service agents have a lot on their plate at this time of year, and it’s important to be patient and respectful as they try to help you.

Here's what it's like to fly on the busiest travel day of the year (so far)

fly travel airplane

  • The FAA said Thursday was the busiest travel day of the year so far.
  • The Transportation Security Administration said that although Thursday had the most flights scheduled, it was anticipating higher passenger volumes through its checkpoints on Friday.
  • Weather across the country has caused disruptions as many Americans prepare to travel for Independence Day.

UP IN THE AIR — Flying on what the Federal Aviation Administration said was the busiest travel day of the year wasn’t so bad.

According to the FAA, 53,677 flights were scheduled for Thursday – the most of any day so far in 2024.

Pulling up to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport on Tuesday, my Lyft driver warned me that the departures area was backed up and asked if I’d be OK with getting dropped off on the arrivals level instead.

Once inside the airport, the security line was longer than expected, but still didn’t take much longer than it should have.

The Transportation Security Administration said that although Thursday had the most flights scheduled, it was anticipating higher passenger volumes through its checkpoints on Friday.

“The peak travel day will be Friday, June 28, when the agency expects to screen more than 3 million individuals,” a statement from the agency said. “TSA is staffed to meet its wait time standards, which are 10 minutes and under in TSA PreCheck lanes and 30 minutes and under in standard screening lanes. Seven of the top 10 busiest travel days ever have occurred over the past month.”

Since its founding, the TSA has yet to screen 3 million or more passengers in a single day across the nation’s airports.

A week of delays

Weather across the country has caused disruptions as many Americans prepare to travel for Independence Day. According to FlightAware , hundreds of flights have been canceled and more than 8,000 flights have been delayed every day so far this week.

The Department of Transportation's interactive dashboard shows what each airline owes travelers for both cancellations and delays. Some airlines may offer additional flexibility beyond what is listed on the dashboard.

Flight prices this summer

For most flyers, domestic travel has been a relatively good deal this summer, but for those looking to book a last-minute July 4 trip, prices could give some serious sticker shock.

Nevertheless, there are strategies for finding the best possible deals at the last minute , including being more flexible with your travel dates and the airports you fly through or playing a game of chicken with booking.

Summer travel is about to reach peak misery

With extreme-weather delays and record airport crowds, flying in July is not for the faint of heart.

fly travel airplane

Buckle up, air travelers. The skies might be unfriendly for a while.

If history is any indication, we are about to enter the time of year with the most delays caused by extreme weather — as well as some of the busiest flying days ever recorded. The Transportation Security Administration recently broke a single-day record by screening close to 3 million passengers, and it expects to see more than 32 million between June 27 and July 8.

July was hit hardest by extreme weather last year, with 7,996 delays, according to federal data . It was the worst month for those delays dating back to at least 2016. July was the worst month of the year by that metric in six of the past eight years.

Between June and August of last year, there were nearly 20,000 delays due to extreme weather. That’s more than the number of those delays in the six least-affected months combined.

Why delays are worst in the summer

The Department of Transportation defines extreme weather delays as those caused by actual or forecast “significant meteorological conditions” such as a tornado, blizzard or hurricane that would delay or prevent the operation of a flight.

Delays caused by non-extreme weather are lumped into another category that also includes airport operations, heavy traffic volume and air traffic control. Transportation Department statistics show that weather accounts for the highest share of those delays — often more than 60 percent — in the months between May and August.

Summer thunderstorms include “lightning that can stop airport operations, in some cases completely shutting down arrivals and departures at major airports,” Robert W. Mann, a consultant and former airline executive, said in an email. The bad weather can halt traffic along busy flight corridors. He said those summer conditions are more likely and widespread than winter disruptions, making delays in the summer more prevalent.

Kathleen Bangs, spokeswoman for the flight-tracking service FlightAware and a former airline pilot, said lines of thunderstorms rolling in can force an airport to quickly adjust operations, including the direction planes take off and land.

“That doesn’t tend to happen in the winter,” she said. “You don’t have so many rapid changes in such a short period of time.”

Few protections for weather delays

For summer travelers, the collision of storm delays and full flights can lead to extra frustration. Mann pointed out that there would probably be fewer empty seats to accommodate passengers whose flights were canceled or who missed connections.

“With so many people traveling in summer, your options can be quite limited,” said Katy Nastro, spokeswoman for the cheap-flight alert service Going .

Also limited: the responsibilities of airlines when delays are caused by weather. Major carriers have committed to taking certain actions for customers like offering meal vouchers and hotel stays in the case of cancellations and long delays that are caused by “controllable” circumstances.

“Unfortunately, that uncontrollable scenario gives you the least amount of rights,” Nastro said.

Still, regardless of the reason, if a flight is canceled or delayed significantly and a passenger ends up not traveling, they have the right to a refund. Once a new DOT rule goes into effect later this year, those refunds must be issued automatically.

How to avoid flight delays

Air travel experts say passengers should keep some tips in mind for the best chance at smooth sailing during stormy months.

Nastro said that if people are still planning their travel — or have the ability to change an existing trip — they should take the earliest flight of the day they can find. The chance of bad weather is lower, and planes are usually waiting at the airport, so the risks of delay are limited. And if something were to go wrong, travelers would still have time to try to catch later flights.

Another benefit to morning flights? “You’ll almost always get a smoother ride,” Bangs said.

Travelers should also take nonstop flights whenever possible to avoid the chance of disruptions during layovers and potentially missing connecting flights.

Bangs recommends checking the National Weather Service’s national forecast chart and a Federal Aviation Administration page that shows the status of the country’s airspace. If there are big storms or delays where you’re going, it might give you a chance to make alternate arrangements proactively.

“It gives you that information so you can kind of start seeing ahead,” she said. “I look at the country as kind of a big chess board and you can get ahead a few moves by knowing what’s going on.”

If you know before heading to the airport that your flight will be delayed, experts suggest playing it safe and still showing up on schedule as long as the posted delay is two hours or less. If you do want to linger at home, use a flight-tracking site like FlightAware or Flightradar24 to track your plane’s location and make sure you’ve signed up for airline notifications.

“Be very careful about what you choose to do,” travel analyst Henry Harteveldt, president of Atmosphere Research Group , told The Washington Post last year. “Ultimately, the airline is not responsible for making sure you’re on the plane. That’s up to you. When departure time comes, that plane is going to leave.”

These Are the Best (and Worst) Times to Hit the Road for July 4, According to AAA

And the best time is sooner than you'd think.

fly travel airplane

peeterv/Getty Images

A record-setting nearly 71 million Americans are expected to travel for the Fourth of July holiday, cementing this as the summer of travel.

In total, 70.9 million travelers are forecast to head 50 miles or more from home from Saturday, June 29, to Sunday, July 7, according to AAA . Of those, 60.6 million people are expected to hit the road.

This year’s forecast, which for the first time includes the entire Fourth of July week plus the Saturday before and the Sunday after, represents a 5 percent increase compared to last year and an 8 percent increase compared to pre-pandemic in 2019.

“With summer vacations in full swing and the flexibility of remote work, more Americans are taking extended trips around Independence Day,” Paula Twidale, the senior vice president of AAA Travel, said in a statement, adding, “We anticipate this July 4th week will be the busiest ever.”

For travelers looking to drive over July 4, mornings tend to be the best to avoid traffic. The worst times to travel by car ahead of the holiday are between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m, according to AAA. Travelers heading back on Monday, July 8, should also avoid rush hour traffic during both the morning and afternoon.

Overall, the best day for traffic will be Monday, July 1.

While traffic is likely inevitable, the good news is gas prices are expected to continue dropping leading up to July 4. Currently, gas is averaging $3.47 per gallon nationwide, according to AAA , which is lower than last year’s national average of $3.53 per gallon during the same time period.

Beyond the roads , a total of 5.74 million people are expected to fly over the July 4 holiday, a nearly 7 percent increase compared to last year. The prediction comes as unprecedented numbers of travelers have swarmed airports across the country , setting new records for the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

More people may be flying, but AAA said domestic airfare is actually 2 percent cheaper over the Fourth of July holiday than last year. The average price for a domestic roundtrip ticket is currently $800.

In addition, more than 4.6 million travelers are forecast to travel by other modes of transportation, including buses, cruises, and trains.
