Victoria Falls Safaris

  • Safari Insights

Victoria Falls safaris will bring you face to face with the powerful Zambezi River. The power of the water being channeled into a narrow gorge creates a virtual ‘rain forest’ as the mist gathers to drench the surrounding trees and vegetation. The Zambezi flows through six countries and along its course it cascades down a magnificent gorge, resulting in the spectacular sight on the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia. On the Zimbabwean side of Victoria Falls lies the protected Victoria Falls National Park which is home to a variety of wildlife including elephants, buffalos, giraffes, zebras and antelope as well as many crocodiles and hippos living in the upstream areas of the Zambezi River. A trip to  Hwange National Park  in Zimbabwe is a great addition your Victoria Falls safaris as it is less than a two-hour drive away.

The proximity of Victoria Falls to the prime wilderness areas of the  Okavango Delta  and  Chobe National Park  in  Botswana , makes it the perfect destination for an all-inclusive safari experience. A Vic Falls holiday lends itself perfectly to a wide variety of adrenaline-filled activities. We recommend the following activities – white water rafting, bungee jumping, horseback riding, jet boating, river safaris, and art safaris in an outdoor studio while observing wildlife.

Getting Around in Victoria Falls

The most convenient way to get around is to have your hotel or lodge arrange transfers, or book a hotel within walking distance of the falls (there are a number of options in Vic Falls Village on the Zimbabwean side, and the Royal Livingstone and Zambian Sun are within ambling distance on the Zambian side). Safari Par Excellence offers prearranged transfers anywhere, as well as a shuttle service from both airports and Victoria Falls Village to its Waterfront Lodge (on the Zambian side), where many of the adventure activities take place. Hemingways offers tours and transfers in vehicles that are also wheelchair accessible (www.hemingwayszambia.com); they also hire specialist safari vehicles and will help plan itineraries for those who wish to explore Zambia further.

Victoria Falls Village is a very small town; most attractions (including the falls) are within walking distance or, at worst, a short taxi ride. Taxis are relatively cheap (make sure you negotiate the price up front), but almost all of the hotels and lodges offer a shuttle service to the falls and around town; many of them are complimentary.

Getting Beyond: Sefofane Zambia (www.sefofane.com) recently announced a new flying schedule to collaborate with the photographic safari season. Commencing on May 1, it will operate three times a week, including Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Travelers fly in air-conditioned C208 Cessna Caravans. The route will start in Livingstone, continuing onto Kafue National Park, Lusaka, and back to Livingstone.

By Boat -- A number of companies run breakfast, lunch, bird-watching, and sunset river cruises. All cruises take place on the calmer, game-rich waters of the Upper Zambezi (the area above the falls) and are usually in large, twin-deck boats. It's a wonderful way to enjoy wildlife such as hippos, elephants, and aquatic birds, though you'll probably also see plenty of other tourists. One of the oldest operators is Dabula Safaris, represented by the South African-based African Adrenalin safari company (tel. 27/11/888-4037; www.africanadrenalin.com). If you're averse to crowds, it's worth inquiring about the cruises on smaller (maximum eight people), shallower, propeller-free jet boats; they're a bit more expensive ($95 per person) but quieter, and can explore places larger boats can't access.

By Train -- Board a beautifully restored steam train -- a 1954 Dlass 14A steam locomotive, dining cars, and first-class coaches operated by Victoria Falls Steam Train Company (tel. 263/13/42912, 263/11/203688, or 27/82/294-4684; www.steamtraincompany.com) -- and leave Zimbabwe's Victoria Falls to cross the mighty Zambezi via the Victoria Falls Bridge to Livingstone, Zambia (or vice versa). You can do the bridge run at sunset, voted as one of the World's 15 Most Spectacular Sundowner Spots, or opt for "royal tea" ($120 per person) or the Moonlight Dinner Run ($168 per person). Reservations are essential, with a 20% nonrefundable deposit payable on reservation. Bring your passport, and be aware that rates don't cover visas.

Note : This information was accurate when it was published, but can change without notice. Please be sure to confirm all rates and details directly with the companies in question before planning your trip.

Africa’s most impressive waterfall leaves all who gaze upon it in mystified awe, but there’s much more to it than spectacular scenery.

The waterfall – especially when the river’s water levels rise between January and June – is immense and impressive. Still, the Zimbabwean town that shares the falls’ name is a great destination to explore.

With many of its hotels strung out along the Upper Zambezi , a stone’s throw above the Falls, Victoria Falls town has developed close to ‘the smoke that thunders,’ as it’s locally known.

This makes it considerably easier for guests to access the waterfall on the Zimbabwean side than from the Zambian town of Livingstone. Furthermore, with its rainforest trails and numerous viewpoints, the tiny Victoria Falls National Park provides unrivaled opportunities to view the multiple falls that constitute this extraordinary natural spectacle.

Why Victoria Falls?

  • The most exciting and best-functioning place in all of Zimbabwe
  • Close proximity to the Falls with numerous viewpoints
  • An array of adrenaline-pumping adventure sports activities
  • Wide range of excellent lodgings, restaurants, and bars
  • Extremely friendly local people

Where to go in Victoria Falls

  • Victoria Falls in Zambia
  • Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe
  • Zambezi River

Since Zimbabwe’s economic and political troubles started in the 2000s, Zambia has taken over as the most popular destination to visit Victoria Falls. The laidback town of Livingstone, which lies 11km (7mi) from the falls, has an excellent setup for tourists, from lodging that suits every budget to great restaurants and loads of adventure and cultural activities.

elephants-in-line-zambia

Zimbabwe may have more viewing points of Victoria Falls than Zambia, but the latter country offers the chance to get much closer to the spray. You can get tantalizingly close to the Eastern Cataract and right into the thick of the mist when you walk across the Knife-Edge Bridge.

Then there’s swimming in Devil’s Pool , a natural rock pool right on the edge of the waterfall, and the hike down to Boiling Pot at the bottom of the cascading falls, where you can swim under the spray.

Devils Pool is one of the world's most beautiful infinity pools

In terms of wildlife, the Zambian side has Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park , where game viewing is easy due to its compact size. While spotting elephants and zebra against beautiful backdrops of the Zambezi River, the real highlight of the park is the re-introduced White rhino which you can track on foot in a thrilling wildlife encounter.

Getting up close to the power of Victoria Falls is what a visit to Livingstone is all about. Inside the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park are pathways alongside the gorge edge that give you incredible panoramas of the Eastern Cataract, one of five waterfalls of Victoria Falls. Get within a few feet of the waterfall and get soaked on the Knife-Edge Bridge before taking to the skies.

You can either take a helicopter flip for heart-stopping aerial views of the falls or, for the more daring, hop on the back of a piloted microlight to soar like a bird above the mist.

If you travel during the full moon, don’t miss seeing the lunar rainbow in the falls at night. On the night before, the night of, and the night after the full moon each month, there’s a special entrance opening to see the lunar rainbow of Victoria Falls: refracted light from the moon displayed in the spray of the falls.

The best time of year to see the lunar rainbow is when the waterfall spray is at its most powerful, from around February to May, and while you can see it from either side of the border, the view from the Zambian side is better than in Zimbabwe .

The most exciting view of the falls, and probably the most thrilling swim you’ll ever have, is in Devil’s Pool. This natural rock pool, perched on the edge of the waterfall, is about as close as you can get to Victoria Falls. To reach it, you take a boat to Livingstone Island and swim a short distance in the Zambezi before reaching the pool.

It’s not as hair-raising as it sounds – there is a natural ledge that stops you from going over the edge, but for safety, you can only do the swim when the river is running low, from around late August to early January.

Then there’s the view of the falls from below: hike down a steep trail for around 20 minutes to reach the Boiling Pot, a churning whirlpool, at the base of the waterfall (note that you can only do this hike in the low-water season of August to December). You can’t get much closer to Victoria Falls than swimming under the spray: paddle across the Boiling Pot to be showered by the world’s most immense sheet of cascading water.

Aerial few of the world famous Victoria Falls with a large rainbow over the falls. This is right at the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe in Southern Africa. The mighty Victoria Falls at Zambezi river are one of the most visited touristic places in Africa.

Adventure activities are on the cards for most travelers to Livingstone, starting from the most daring – the 111m (364ft) bungee jump into Batoka Gorge off Victoria Falls Bridge, which connects Zimbabwe and Zambia. Regarded as one of the best bungee jumps in the world, you’ll be guaranteed spectacular views and a massive shot of adrenaline.

Slightly less terrifying is the bridge swing. Jump feet first into an 80m (262ft) freefall. Then there’s the Flying Fox, a jump across the chasm on a cable slide. For the same spectacular views but without the adrenaline injection, a great alternative is to traverse the walkways under the bridge while strapped into a safety harness.

Slide down the gorge without turning into a human pendulum when you go abseiling more than 50m (164ft) down a rope. An excellent way of spotting wildlife and birds and taking in the area’s beautiful scenery is on a horse ride along the Zambezi River. Head out for a few hours or take an overnight ride through teak forests, where you’ll camp on the river banks.

In terms of river activities, there’s extreme white-water rafting on the Zambezi’s huge rapids and jet boating. Less strenuous activities include drifting on the Livingstone Float, canoeing safaris, and sipping cocktails on relaxing river cruises at sunset.

Anglers should sign up for a fishing excursion around islands upstream from the falls, where the prize is the world’s most exciting freshwater fighting fish: the toothy Tigerfish.

Aerial View over the Zambezi River with Bush camping, Zambia

A memorable and romantic experience not to be missed is the five-course dinner onboard a 1920s steam train, which traces a slow journey along the Zambezi River through Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park at sunset. You’ll have the chance to spot wildlife while sipping on wine before the train stops for dinner and then turns back to Livingstone.

If you’re after spectacular views, you can take another steam train journey from Livingstone to the Victoria Falls Bridge, where the panoramas of the dramatic gorge are beyond photogenic.

Split into two sections, Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park is made up of Victoria Falls and the wildlife area, which is only 3km (2mi) from Livingstone. While small and lacking in big predators, the park offers a great introduction to Zambia’s wildlife , including elephant, buffalo, Burchell’s zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, and beautiful birds such as Livingstone’s turaco and Livingstone’s flycatcher.

Because of the park’s compact size, wildlife viewing is effortless. Book a guided game drive through your hotel, or take your own car to self-drive around the park in just a few hours. The star attractions of Mosi-oa-Tunya are the re-introduced (and well-protected) White rhinos, which you can track on foot, a unique way to see these endangered creatures up close.

Buffalo-herd-in-zambezi-zambia

To learn about Zambian history, culture, and rural life, visit the Mukuni Village, established in the 13th century and now home to around 7000 Leya people. Take a guided tour of the working village to meet the villagers in their huts, taste some traditional food and beer, see craftspeople at work, and shop for carvings and souvenirs in the market.

Practical Advice About the Region

The town of Livingstone is a short drive away from Victoria Falls. Two hotels are within walking distance of the falls. Some hotels offer a free shuttle service to the falls, or you can hire a private taxi to get you there. You don’t need to hire a guide to take you on a tour of the falls. The entrance fee to the park to see the falls is US$20, and the opening hours are from 6 AM to 6 PM.

If you want soft light, visit the falls at sunrise or sunset. If you’re seeing the falls during the high-water season from February to May, you’ll get very wet: bring waterproof gear or buy a poncho at the entrance gate, and cover up any electronics. Always stick to the paths, stay behind barriers, and wear non-slip shoes with a good grip for walking on slippery trails.

At some places on the paths, there are no barriers – be extremely careful about going too close to the edge on slippery rocks.

During the high-water season (February to May), when the Zambezi River is at its fullest, the mist and spray can obscure views on the Zimbabwean side of the falls, making Zambia a better choice for views. However, after the dry winter season, around October or November, the falls dry up on the Zambian side. If you’re visiting Victoria Falls this time of year, it’s a good idea to consider staying on the Zimbabwean side .

Victoria Falls from the air in the afternoon

If you’re traveling with children, check the minimum age requirement before you book any activities. For example, children need to be at least 12 years old to track White rhinos, 15 for whitewater rafting, and 14 for bungee jumping and bridge swinging.

On the edge of town, Harry Mwaanga International Airport has flights from Lusaka, Johannesburg, and Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport. The latter serves Kruger National Park in South Africa, a very convenient route if you’re combining a safari in South Africa with a visit to Victoria Falls.

If you stay in Zambia, it makes sense to visit the Zimbabwean side of the falls to get more panoramic views. The best way to do this is to obtain a KAZA Uni-Visa for US$50 on arrival in Zambia from one of the following places: the Victoria Falls border, Harry Mwaanga International Airport in Livingstone, Kenneth Kaunda International Airport in Lusaka and the Kazungula border.

The visa has a validity of 30 days. It allows unlimited crossings between Zambia and Zimbabwe, as well as day trips into Botswana, which is ideal if you’d like to visit Chobe National Park on a day trip and return to Livingstone that evening.

What Sort of Traveler Should go to the Zambian side of Victoria Falls?

With a remarkable array of activities on the Zambian side of Victoria Falls, every kind of traveler will find experiences just up their street. Adventurers will be in their element with bungee jumping, whitewater rafting, gorge swinging, and abseiling. Nature lovers can get their fix on gorge hikes, game drives in Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, horseback rides, and canoe safaris.

Couples will find many relaxing experiences, from spa treatments and sunset river cruises at luxury hotels and lodges geared up for honeymooners and romantic breaks , with special packages and extra touches such as private dining experiences in exceptional locations.

Solo travelers will have plenty of chances to meet other travelers in bars, restaurants, and on group activities, but will also find peace and quiet on hikes and horse rides through the bush. Families are well catered to. Many hotels and lodges have the option of booking family rooms , as well as offering kids’ activity programs and children’s menus. The activities in and around Livingstone are suitable for all ages, from toddlers to teenagers.

For many years, Zimbabwe was the country most tourists chose to base themselves in to visit Victoria Falls . Still, as a result of the country’s political strife and economic instability in the 2000s, most travelers started choosing Livingstone on the Zambian side instead. Zimbabwe has become much more stable in recent years, and tourism is again on the rise in the country, with more and more people choosing to stay on the Zimbabwean side of Victoria Falls.

Zimbabwe is a country rich in natural beauty

There’s good reason to visit the Zimbabwean side. The country is home to two-thirds of Victoria Falls, four of the five waterfalls (Horseshoe Falls, Rainbow Falls, the Main Falls, and the Devil’s Cataract), and almost all of the viewing points (16 out of 19). It’s the only side of the border the water flows year-round.

Exploring the falls from Zimbabwe certainly won’t disappoint, no matter what time of year you go – the panoramas from the top of the gorge are simply astounding.

The town of Victoria Falls, situated a conveniently short walk from the falls themselves, has excellent tourist infrastructure, offering a wide range of lodging options, restaurants, bars, curio shops, markets, and an array of activities and adventures.

Zambezi National Park is only a 10-minute drive from town and makes for a great safari experience (especially if you don’t have time to visit other Zimbabwean parks on your trip), with gorgeous landscapes and herds of elephant, buffalo, zebra, giraffe, and sable set against a backdrop of picturesque riverine landscapes.

Zambezi National Park is a haven for adventure seekers

Highlights of the Region

Seeing Victoria Falls is undoubtedly the top highlight of any visit. Still, there are more ways than one to take in the powerful display of cascading water. First up should be a viewing experience on foot. Pay the entrance fee to Victoria Falls National Park and take your time to walk the cliffside trails that offer 16 viewpoints of the falls from different angles.

Then it’s time for a bird’s eye perspective. Take a ride in a helicopter flying high above the falls for truly spectacular photos of “the smoke that thunders.” This is particularly dramatic during the high-water season of February to May, when the mist and spray are propelled high into the air.

If you’re lucky to be visiting Victoria Falls during a full moon after the rainy season when the falls are in full flow, then don’t miss taking a trip to witness a lunar rainbow or a “moonbow” – the rare and unique sight of a nighttime rainbow reflected in the water.

An aerial view of Vic Falls is undoubtedly a pinnacle experience

In and around the town of Victoria Falls, there are more outdoor adventures than you can shake a GoPro stick at. One of the most popular activities is whitewater rafting on the Zambezi River – a thrilling ride that draws adventurers from around the world.

Then there are the activities that get you some views and adrenaline shots. Fly across the Batoka Gorge at 100kph (62mph) along a zip line suspended 120m (394ft) above the Zambezi, or jump on the Flying Fox to slide face-down on a cable high above the churning water far below.

Gorge swinging is not for the faint of heart: become a human pendulum when you jump off the edge of the gorge to swing on a giant cable suspended across the two sides of the gorge.

A less extreme high-wire activity suitable for the whole family (no minimum age limit) is the Victoria Falls Canopy Tour, which takes you on nine different zip lines, trails, and bridges through the forest of Batoka Gorge . Expect spectacular views of the river and the chance to spot beautiful birds such as the Purple crested turaco .

You’ve heard of shark cage diving but probably not crocodile cage diving: same idea, except you’re protected in a cage in a pool of crocodiles. Get your closest experience with these powerful reptiles as you remain underwater with diving gear.

Challenge another toothy predator on fishing excursions on the Zambezi to catch the famous Tigerfish, which is regarded as the best freshwater fighting fish in the world.

For those less adventurously inclined, activities also come in the more sedate variety. Think guided bike tours of the town and surrounding area, relaxing river cruises in the golden light of the late afternoon, spotting elephants, hippos, and birds, a tram ride across the bridge to Zambia, and sunset trips on an old steam train across Victoria Falls Bridge with drinks and snacks.

You can also visit a local village and help with some daily chores to see what rural life is like for Zimbabweans.

Batoka Gorge is the epicentre of fun and adventure

Despite its small size, Zambezi National Park packs an impressive punch. It’s home to scenic landscapes of riverine forest, mopane woodland, four of the Big Five (rhinos are absent), African wild dogs, hippos, cheetahs, crocodiles, giraffes, and diverse birdlife.

Spot more than 400 species, including the highlights of Pel’s fishing owl, African finfoot, Goliath heron, and migratory African skimmers. Go on self-guided game drives to spot wildlife easily on the 50km (31mi) long network of roads that trace the Zambezi River – the northern boundary of the park – and take along a packed lunch to eat at one of the picturesque picnic sites along the river.

There’s also the option of joining game drives on open-air safari vehicles, where you’ll learn about the animals and birdlife from a guide. For more of a wilderness immersion without the sound of a motor, you can also take walking safaris with a professional guide or explore the park on a horseback safari.

Shopping for art, curios, and sculptures is a highlight of a visit to Victoria Falls. Zimbabwe is known for its artisans and sculptors, and you’ll find some special pieces to take home.

The best place to browse is the Elephant’s Walk Shopping and Artist Village, which has different galleries and boutiques stocked with sculptures made of materials such as soapstone, wire and quartz, and ironwood. The village is famous for its carvings and souvenirs, such as wooden walking sticks with an animal head carved on top, clothes and bags made from local fabrics, and beautiful jewelry.

All the prices here are fixed, so there’s no haggling. Nearby there’s an outdoor curio market with crafts and artworks where the prices are up for negotiation.

Elephant's Walk Shopping and Artists Village is a hub for curios. Prices are fixed so haggling for bargains is not an option.

A small museum packed with fascinating artifacts from Zimbabwe’s different ethnic groups, the Jafuta Heritage Center is a must for anyone interested in the country’s rich cultural heritage.

Built just a few years ago, Victoria Falls Airport is a short drive outside town and has direct flights from Johannesburg and Harare. Another way of reaching Victoria Falls is by train – either the budget-friendly Mosi-Oa-Tunya, from Bulawayo or the very luxurious Rovos Rail from Pretoria in South Africa.

The town of Victoria Falls has an excellent range of lodging options, including campsites, backpackers with dorm rooms , and all-inclusive luxury lodges . Some hotels are within walking distance from Victoria Falls, and others have a free shuttle bus that takes you to the Victoria Falls National Park entrance.

The park entrance fee is US$30 (US$40 for a night entry), which gets you in once. If you return to the falls later in the day, you’ll need to pay again. The opening hours are from 6 AM or 6.30 AM (depending on summer and winter seasons) to 6 PM and from 7 PM to 10 PM.

Getting up early and watching the sun rise over the falls is truly magical – and you’ll have the paths almost to yourself.

You don’t need a guide to see the falls, as it’s very easy to do a self-guided tour with well-marked paths and signs, but if you want to learn more about the history of the falls and the local flora and fauna, hiring a guide or booking a guided tour from your hotel is a good idea.

Seeing Victoria Falls during and after the rainy season (from February to May), when the Zambezi River is in full flow, means you’re guaranteed to get completely soaked by mist and spray. You’ll need to wear a plastic poncho and carefully cover your camera in a waterproof bag or casing. Be careful taking photos because waves of mist can suddenly hit you before you’ve had a chance to protect your camera.

Wearing comfortable non-slip shoes is important because the paths are incredibly slippery when wet. Always stick to the demarcated footpaths and stay behind barriers. At viewpoints where there are no barriers, be sure to stay far away from the edge.

Experience the mighty Zambezi river in full flow from Feb-May

If you’re looking for a safari experience beyond just a game drive and the chance to fall asleep to a soundtrack of animal and bird noises, there are several options for lodging inside the Zambezi National Park, from self-catering lodges and campsites along the river to luxury lodges and camps with all-inclusive rates .

It’s easy to visit Victoria Falls and try out all of the activities in the area, as the park is only a short drive from town.

If you’re planning on visiting Zambia , ensure you get the new KAZA Uni-Visa on your arrival in Zimbabwe (it’s available at Victoria Falls International Airport, the Kazungula border, Harare International Airport, as well as the Victoria Falls border).

The visa costs US$50, which is cheaper than buying two separate visas for Zimbabwe and Zambia. It’s valid for 30 days and allows you to cross between Zimbabwe and Zambia as many times as you like. It also allows you to cross into Botswana for the day as long as you return to Zambia or Zimbabwe the same day – perfect for making a day trip to visit Chobe National Park .

What Sort of Traveler Should go to Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe side)

Victoria Falls really does have something for everyone: solo travelers will discover friendly, welcoming local people and find plenty of opportunities to meet up with other travelers on group activities and in restaurants and bars. Families will find various experiences suited for kids , such as the Victoria Falls Canopy Tour.

Romantic couples are well catered to in terms of intimate rooms and experiences for two (think exclusive suites, in-room couples’ spa treatments, and private dinners on your terrace).

At the same time, adventurers will find plenty to keep the adrenaline pumping, whether bungee jumping or whitewater rafting over huge rapids.

There’s more to the Zambezi River than its mighty cascade down a 1.7km (1mi) wide gorge to form Victoria Falls . Africa’s fourth largest river draws adventure seekers from all over the planet for Africa’s most thrilling whitewater rafting on powerful Grade Five rapids.

However, whitewater rafting is not the only way to have fun on the Zambezi’s rapids. For more adventurous thrills, there’s river boarding, where you surf the rapids on a bodyboard and jet boating over the water at 100kph (62mph).

Early morning boat trips down or up the Zambezi river will offer unique views of the wading wildlife

The river also offers more relaxing activities to match high-intensity adventures. The Zambezi courses its way through beautiful landscapes of national parks on either side of the border, supporting a variety of wildlife and bird species.

Paddle along the river on relaxing canoe safaris, which get you close to elephant and buffalo drinking on the banks, or do the Livingstone drift tour, where a guide paddles you down the river in an inflatable raft. The famous sunset river cruises are a must. Explore the river at a languid pace on a big boat and take in a glorious sunset with cocktails and snacks.

whitewater rafting on the Zambezi River is said to be the best in Africa, and with nearly half of the river’s rapids classified as Grade Five, tackling the river is a wild, white-knuckle ride. Between the thrilling rapids, there are stretches of calm where you can soak in the dramatic scenery from the bottom of the gorge.

whitewater rafting can be done in Zambia and Zimbabwe on half-day or full-day excursions, but you can also sign up for overnight or multi-day trips, where you camp out on beautiful beaches in the wilderness. Riverboarding is another heart-pumping whitewater ride: don a wetsuit, helmet, shin guards, and flippers and jump on top of a bodyboard to cruise the rapids and navigate the rocks of the Zambezi face first.

It’s a close contender with whitewater rafting and bungee jumping for the most thrilling adventure you can have at Victoria Falls . If speed is your thing, book a jet boating ride in either Zambia or Zimbabwe on a super-powered jet-propelled boat, which shoots over the Zambezi and its rapids at 100kph (62mph).

Jet boats can cruise in shallow water, so you can explore parts of the river that are inaccessible to bigger boats. A thirty-minute ride includes a visit to the Boiling Pot at the base of the falls, a couple of rapids, and tricks such as 360-degree turns.

White water rafting is an adrenalin-junkie's dream

Paddling down the Zambezi and its many channels on a canoeing safari with a qualified guide is a beautiful way of birdwatching . Spot more than 400 species and wildlife , such as hippos, crocodiles, and antelopes, on shore. You’ll be able to get closer to the big game – such as elephants – than you would in a game drive vehicle, so it’s a wonderful way to experience the bush on half or full-day trips.

You can also do multi-day adventures, where your nights are spent camping under the stars on riverside beaches.

An even more sedate alternative to canoeing trips is the Livingstone Drift: float in an inflatable raft and get paddled down the river by a guide who will point out animals and birds while you sit back and sip on a beer.

Livingstone Drift is a tamer way of experiencing the mighty Zambezi river Credit: Bundu Adventures

Cruises on the river are offered on both sides of the border, with the large African Queen on the Zambian side , which takes more than 100 passengers, and smaller boats on the Zimbabwean side . You can get cocktails and snacks or a full dinner on boat trips.

There couldn’t be a more relaxing way to take in the magnificent riverside scenery, spotting wildlife such as hippos, crocodiles, elephants, buffalo, and some of the hundreds of species of birds that populate the region .

Fishing excursions on the Zambezi are a must for keen anglers. The river is home to over 75 species of fish, the most famous of which is the Tigerfish. This giant predator – weighing up to 15 kg – is regarded as one of the best freshwater fighting fishes in the world, and it’s the most prized catch on the river.

Fishing trips can take anything from a few hours to a full day, and even if you don’t catch anything, you’ll have a great day out on the river exploring channels and pools and spotting birds and wildlife.

Whitewater rafting is not a year-round activity. From March/April to July, when the Zambezi River is at its highest, you can’t go rafting at all. August to December is the best time of year for whitewater rafting (because the low water levels mean the most exciting rapids), with August and September being the optimal months.

You need to be pretty fit to do whitewater rafting as it’s quite a serious adventure, and the walk in and out of the gorge is strenuous (bring good walking shoes along for the hikes).

While you can do whitewater rafting in Zambia and Zimbabwe , a benefit of the Zambian side is that you don’t have to clamber out of the steep gorge at the end of your rafting adventure because there’s a cable car lift that takes you up the side.

The minimum age for riverboarding is 13, and for whitewater rafting, it’s 15. At the same time, the canoeing safaris on the Upper Zambezi are pretty easygoing, so children aged seven and above are allowed to join trips.

If you’re after Tigerfish, late May to December is the best time of year to try to catch these ferocious predators, while August to November is the ideal time for fishing generally because of the low water level of the Zambezi.

What Sort of Traveller Should go to the Zambezi River?

Trips on the Zambezi River are definitely for the adventurers: tackle challenging rapids on whitewater rafting trips and riverboarding adventures or shoot over the river at high speed in a jet boat.

Solo travelers can join groups for whitewater rafting , jet boating, fishing trips, and canoeing safaris, and the sunset river cruises are very social.

Zambezi River trips are great for families too . While there’s an age limit of 15 for whitewater rafting and river boarding, children only need to be seven and above to go on the canoeing safaris, and river cruises are for all ages.

When is the best month to travel to victoria falls.

  • Victoria Falls in January

January is mid-summer in Victoria Falls . It’s hot (the maximum average temperature is 31°C/88°F) and rainy, with afternoon thundershowers most afternoons. It’s the wettest month of the year.

Highlights of the Month

The Zambezi River is starting to rise from the summer rains, which means there’s a lot of mist and spray at Victoria Falls.

While wildlife viewing is not ideal in January (and the Zambezi National Park may close after heavy rains), this is the best bird-watching season, as migratory species are present.

You can still go whitewater rafting in January, although it’s not the best time of year due to the higher water level. The Devil’s Pool usually closes for swimming early in the month.

January is the low season for travel to Victoria Falls, which means you can pick up some great discounts on lodging and all-inclusive packages.

  • Victoria Falls in February

February is another rainy and hot month in Victoria Falls. Though it will rain most days, usually, the thundershowers clear up fairly quickly, leaving blue skies and sunshine.

February is a great month to see Victoria Falls if you want to experience the full dramatic power of the Zambezi River gushing down the gorge. However, the mist and spray can make getting panoramic views difficult.

February is an excellent month for birdwatching, though it’s not ideal for wildlife viewing, and there’s a chance that the Zambezi National Park on the Zimbabwean side may close if it’s been raining heavily.

February is still the low season – known as the “green season” – in Victoria Falls, so hotels offer lower rates .

  • Victoria Falls in March

March is another warm, humid, rainy month in Victoria Falls, with frequent afternoon thundershowers and average daytime highs of 31°C/88°F.

The Zambezi River is full of water from the summer rains, which means that Victoria Falls is pumping at full volume. Expect to see a dramatic spectacle with a soundtrack of roaring thunder and lots of mist and spray (which can obscure the view).

Lovebirds in Zambia

March is another month for birders . The migratory species are still in the national parks and the trees around the falls. Wildlife viewing is difficult because of the lush vegetation at this time of the year.

Whitewater rafting usually ends in March or April because of the high water level in the Zambezi River.

March is nearing the end of the “green season,” or low season, when hotels offer their lowest rates on rooms .

  • Victoria Falls in April

The rainy season ends in April, a much drier month than March. The temperature drops slightly but is still warm, with daytime temperatures in the high 20°C/68°F.

In April, the Zambezi River is extremely full, so Victoria Falls is in full flow. It’s an excellent time to travel to the falls if you want to see the natural spectacle at its most dramatic. However, the spray sent up by the waterfalls can make it difficult to see the falls at foot level, so at this time of year, a helicopter ride will give you the best view. The views from the Zambian side are also better during this full-flow period.

vf_helicopters01-4.jpg

April is the last month to spot migratory bird species before they move in the dry winter.

  • Victoria Falls in May

May marks the beginning of the dry winter season with almost no rainfall and a drop in temperatures (nighttime lows go down to 11°C/52°F). Pack warm clothes to wear at night and in the early mornings.

This time of the year gets better for wildlife viewing

May has terrific weather, with sunshine and blue skies. It’s a good time of year to travel to Victoria Falls to witness the astounding spectacle of a massive volume of water gushing down the gorge with a roar, although there’s less spray and mist than in March and April .

  • Victoria Falls in June

A lionness jumps through the water, intent on catching her prey

June is a dry, cool month in Victoria Falls, with nighttime temperatures dropping to below 10°C/50°F, although daytimes are mild and temperatures can go up to the mid 20°C/68°F. You’ll need to bring warm clothing for nighttime activities, early morning hikes, and game drives.

June is one of the busiest months of the year for visiting Victoria Falls . The views of the falls are excellent – the falls are still mighty but don’t have as much spray as earlier in the year, as the water level in the Zambezi has decreased.

As the vegetation starts to thin out in June, the wildlife viewing in the national parks surrounding the falls gets much easier.

  • Victoria Falls in July

July is the coolest month of the year. Nighttime temperatures drop to 7°C/45°F, while daytime temperatures are in the mid 20°C/68°F. Pack warm clothes for nighttime and early morning game drives and activities.

July is a popular month to visit Victoria Falls for the clear blue skies, sunshine, and excellent views of the falls. The river is not at its fullest, so the mist and spray have decreased from the earlier months of the year, and you’ll get perfect panoramas.

July is a great time for game viewing in the Zambezi National Park in Zimbabwe and Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park in Zambia .

  • Victoria Falls in August

August is another dry month, but it’s slightly warmer than July, with daytime averages of 29°C/84°F and nighttime temperatures of 10°C/50°F.

August is one of the peak months for tourism in Victoria Falls. It’s a great time to view the falls and the best month for whitewater rafting . The Devil’s Pool usually opens near the end of this month, and swimming in this natural infinity pool is a highlight for many travelers. Wildlife viewing in August is excellent as vegetation is dry and thin, and animals have to drink in the Zambezi River , making them easy to spot.

Zebra's in the wild

August is a busy month, so expect to share attractions and activities with many other people. It’s the peak season, so hotel rates are at their highest.

  • Victoria Falls in September

September starts to get warmer. Daytime temperatures can be 33°C/91°F, while nighttimes are still a cool 15°C/59°F. It’s still in the dry season, though, with usually no rainfall.

September is one of the best months for visiting Victoria Falls . It’s not yet too hot, the falls are still flowing on both sides of the border, and wildlife viewing and whitewater rafting are excellent. It’s busy, so you’ll pay high season rates and have to book ahead for lodging .

  • Victoria Falls in October

October is known as “Suicide Month.” This is the hottest month of the year, with an average of 34°C/93°F for daytime temperatures, but the highs can go above 40°C/104°F.

With no rains for months, the water in the Zambezi River starts to run low, and by the end of the month, the falls can dry up in Zambia for some years.

An elephant reaches for the juciest foliage

Right at the end of the dry season, October is an excellent month for wildlife viewing in the Zambezi National Park in Zimbabwe and Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park in Zambia.

It’s sweltering in October, and many people choose not to travel at this time of year because of the high temperatures.

  • Victoria Falls in November

In November, the summer rains begin, bringing welcome relief from the intense heat of October, although it’s still very hot.

The Zambezi River is at its lowest level of the year, and Victoria Falls can completely dry up on the Zambian side , although the waterfalls flow year-round in Zimbabwe . It’s not the best time to see the falls if you want to experience their full power.

November is one of the best months of the year for whitewater rafting : the rapids are more challenging because of the low water level in the river.

Migratory bird species arrive in the area in November, marking the start of the bird-watching season .

November is the beginning of the low season in Victoria Falls – an excellent time to travel if you want to score on discounted hotel rates and packages .

  • Victoria Falls in December

December is slightly cooler than November but still a hot month, with daytime temperatures averaging 31°C/88°F. It’s also the second wettest month of the year (after January), so you’ll get an afternoon thundershower on most days.

The Zambezi

The river is low in December, so the falls are much less dramatic than earlier in the year. The waterfalls can also completely dry up on the Zambian side .

How awesome to wake up to this view?

With the start of summer rains, the vegetation starts to get full and greener, which means December isn’t an ideal time for wildlife viewing. However, the birdlife at this time of year is superb, with birds in their full colourful plumage and many migratory species around.

December is the last month for excellent whitewater rafting with the perfect water level in the Zambezi River .

December is low season in Vic Falls, so you’ll be able to get lower rates on hotels and packages .

The lunar rainbow tour is conducted over three days during the full moon. A guide will accompany you through the rainforest and give you a brief history of the Falls and other points of interest.

Activity costs can add up quickly, especially if you’re traveling as a family , so a good option is to choose an activity package, which gets you a discounted rate on a range of activities bundled together.

Enjoy a breakfast cruise

Traveling during the low “green” season of November to April will mean discounted hotel rates and great prices on travel packages. While this isn’t the best time of year to visit Victoria Falls , there are some benefits (other than discounted prices). It’s the best time of year for birdwatching , November and December are great months for whitewater rafting , and the summer rains bring lush, green foliage to the national parks around the falls.

How to have a Budget-Conscious Trip

Both Zambia and Zimbabwe have great lodging options for budget travelers. Your choices include campsites on the banks of the Zambezi , friendly backpackers, and well-run guesthouses. For a bush experience, you can also camp in the Zambezi National Park (on the Zimbabwean side ). The best way to save money on food is to prepare your own meals. Some of the backpackers offer communal kitchens.

View from Victoria Falls River Lodge over the river

While many of the activities on offer are on the pricier side (most start at around US$50), there’s plenty to do that doesn’t cost much. Try the Boiling Pot hike, hiking down into Batoka Gorge , and hiring a bicycle to explore Livingstone or Victoria Falls .

Zambia is generally cheaper than Zimbabwe : lodging and food costs are lower, and the entrance fee to see the falls is also more affordable. If your primary consideration for which side to stay on is cost related, it makes sense to stay in Zambia.

If you’d like to visit both Zimbabwe and Zambia, make sure that you ask for a KAZA Uni-Visa on arrival in either Zambia or Zimbabwe, otherwise you’ll have to pay for a separate visa to enter the other country, which is more expensive.

If you travel during the low season of November to April (the rainiest months of the year), you’ll be able to get the lowest rates on rooms and packages .

There are superb luxury lodges and boutique hotels in Zambia and Zimbabwe which offer stylish rooms and spacious, lavish suites. Expect a host of activities, elegant bars, fine gourmet dining with wine pairings, gyms, spas, swimming pools, 24-hour room service and butlers, and beautiful grounds. In some places, you’ll find wild animals grazing on the lawns.

It’s effortless to have a luxury trip to Victoria Falls : simply book your five-star hotel, and they’ll organize everything for you, from airport transfers to guided tours of Victoria Falls , to all the exciting activities .

Take your pick from hotels with rolling green lawns situated on the banks of the Zambezi , or, for more of a safari experience, stay in a lodge inside the Zambezi National Park or in a private concession on the Zimbabwean side , where you’re immersed in the bush but only a short drive away from the waterfalls.

Highlights of a luxury trip to Victoria Falls include watching wildlife graze on the hotel lawns from your balcony or terrace, tucking into an indulgent spread for High Tea (with a view of the spray of Falls in the distance), and candlelit private dinners at a table set up for you in the garden. Take a helicopter flight over the falls, sunset cruises on the Zambezi River with cocktails and snacks, walking safaris, and private guided game drives in the Zambezi National Park.

Indulge in spa treatments a few steps away from the river, a gourmet five-course dinner with wines onboard an old steam train, and day trips to the magnificent Chobe National Park in Botswana and Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe .

If you’re planning on visiting other destinations in Zimbabwe or Zambia after your stay in Victoria Falls, the most luxurious way to travel is by private charter plane.

Holiday Styles and Options in Victoria Falls

  • Victoria Falls Honeymoon

Victoria Falls is one of the most memorable destinations in Africa for the majestic waterfalls that have earned a place as one of the most breathtaking sights on the planet and for the incredible range of activities you can do in the area. Whether you’re an adventurous couple looking to get adrenaline kicks on your Victoria Falls Honeymoon or prefer more relaxing experiences, Victoria Falls is the perfect destination for a honeymoon.

African sunsets, log fires and lanterns set the scene for the most romantic interludes, credit: Cederberg Travel

There’s a good choice of luxury lodges and hotels in Zambia and Zimbabwe . If you’re looking for a Victoria Falls honeymoon safari experience, you can stay in an all-inclusive lodge inside the Zambezi National Park on the Zimbabwean side.

Book a suite for more privacy, and enjoy special romantic touches such as private meals on your terrace, intimate picnic lunches and lantern-lit dinners for two in the garden, in-room spa treatments, and a personal butler. Some hotels and lodges also offer Victoria Falls honeymoon packages with discounted rates and bonuses, such as bottles of sparkling wine.

Celebrating love at Victoria Falls

Highlights for couples include flying above Victoria Falls in a helicopter , doing a tandem bungee jump off the Victoria Falls Bridge, ziplining through the treetops, or taking a white-knuckle ride on the enormous rapids.

Then there’s taking it easy on a canoeing safari to spot animals and more than 400 species of birds, having sundowner drinks on riverside decks, and taking in the beautiful wilderness on both sides of the river – cocktail in hand – on languid sunset cruises.

Spanning Zimbabwe and Zambia, Victoria Falls is one of Africa’s most spectacular natural sights. There’s not much to beat the biggest sheet of falling water on Earth cascading into the mighty Zambezi River more than 100m (328ft) below. Known as Mosi-oa-Tunya – “the smoke that thunders” – Victoria Falls is so forceful that the spray sent up by the plunging water rises so high that it can be seen from 50km (31mi) away.

Victoria Falls is one of Africa’s most spectacular natural sights

There’s more to Victoria Falls than ticking off this bucket list sight, though. It’s also Africa’s adrenaline capital. On both the Zambian and Zimbabwean sides of the border, adventure seekers will find extreme thrills in whitewater rafting, river boarding, jet boating, bungee jumping, abseiling, ziplining, microlighting above the falls and gorge swinging.

The falls also offer more sedate experiences, such as riding an old steam train and drinking gin and tonics on sunset boat cruises. That’s not to mention the safari activities and animal experiences such as tracking White rhinos on foot and canoeing trips on the Upper Zambezi to spot elephants and birds.

The magic of Victoria Falls is that it’s a destination for just about anyone: solo travelers , families with kids , adventurers and romantic couples will all find more than enough memorable experiences in a visit of even just a few days.

One of the main questions that people ask when planning a trip to Victoria Falls is where to base themselves. The Zimbabwean and Zambian sides both have towns close to the falls that are geared up for tourism, with a huge choice of hotels, guesthouses, restaurants, bars and activity operators. Each side of the border has quite different views of the falls (with the majority of the falls on the Zimbabwean end), and while many of the same activities are on offer on both sides, some experiences, such as bungee jumping and ziplining through a treetop canopy can only be done on one or other side of the border.

It’s important to know that the waterfall dries up on the Zambian side at the end of the dry season (in October or November ), so if you’re traveling during this time it makes sense to stay in Zimbabwe. But otherwise, our recommendation would be to choose to stay on one side and visit the other on an easy day trip.

Who is Travelling to Victoria Falls with you?

  • Solo Holiday in Victoria Falls
  • Who is Traveling to Victoria Falls with you?

Victoria Falls is a perfect destination for solo travelers, whether you choose to stay in either Zambia or Zimbabwe . Both Livingstone and Victoria Falls town are well-set up for tourism and are easy to travel to, book lodging and organise activities. There are plenty of opportunities to meet other travelers in the guesthouses, hotels and in bars and restaurants in town. Many activities in the area , such as white-water rafting, and sunset river cruises, are done in groups, so you’ll be able to join up with other people for adventurous fun.

There’s lots to do on your own, such as explore the falls and go for game drives in the national parks on each side of the border, but just about everything in the area can also be done with a guide.

shearwater-bungee-victoria-falls

Highlights for solo travelers include watching the sunrise over Victoria Falls, catching the lunar rainbow on full moon nights, flying above the falls in a helicopter or microlight and bungee jumping more than 100m (328ft) down into the Batoka Gorge.

Then there’s getting soaked on a whitewater rafting ride, tackling rapids head-first on a bodyboard, fishing for toothsome Tigerfish, spotting wildlife on a canoeing trip (or from the back of a horse), zip lining through the rainforest canopy, swinging across the gorge and sipping cocktails on a sunset cruise on the river.

Both Victoria Falls and Livingstone are safe, tourist-friendly towns and solo female travelers should encounter no problems, although it’s not advisable to walk on your own through the towns at night.

Young and old will appreciate the splendour of Victoria Falls

Kids of all ages will love visiting Victoria Falls . Seeing the world’s biggest waterfall and getting drenched by mist and spray ranks up there with the best travel experiences in the world. Apart from the thrill of exploring the waterfall, the activities on offer in the area couldn’t be more exciting, and many of them are suitable for young kids.

Meanwhile, for teenagers aged 14 or 15 and above there’s the adrenaline-inducing whitewater rafting trips on the powerful Zambezi River’s rapids , hikes in the gorge, bridge swinging, bungee jumping and swimming in the world’s most thrilling infinity pool on the edge of the falls.

Wildlife experiences are great for kids, and there’s a lot to choose from. Go on self-guided game drives in Zambezi National Park in Zimbabwe and Mosi-oa-Tunya Park in Zambia for easy game spotting of elephant, buffalo, wildebeest, zebra and giraffe, track White rhinos on foot (for children above 14), head out on the Zambezi River for fishing trips (for children above four) or set off on overnight canoeing safaris to spot wildlife and birds (for children aged above seven).

There are also lots of activities for children of all ages. Highlights include rides on the steam train and Victoria Falls tram, river cruises, flying over the falls in a helicopter and practicing African drumming skills at the Boma Experience in Victoria Falls.

The children will thoroughly enjoy drumming

Livingstone and the town of Victoria Falls each have a host of lodges and hotels that cater to families with children of all ages with the option of family suites, children’s food menus and kids’ programmes filled with special activities.

Victoria Falls is a malaria area, so ask your doctor before traveling about medication for your children. Always take special care to prevent your kids getting bitten by mosquitoes. They’ll need to wear long sleeves and long trousers at night, in the late afternoon and early morning, use mosquito repellant and sleep under a mosquito net.

If you’re continuing your African safari to either Botswana or South Africa after your stay in Victoria Falls, then you’ll need to have the unabridged birth certificates for your children in order to cross the borders.

What You Need To Know

  • What Makes Victoria Falls Unique?
  • What Wildlife Can I See in Victoria Falls?
  • Why Would People Come Back?

It doesn’t get much more unique than the biggest and most dramatic waterfall on the planet: Victoria Falls definitely deserves its mantle as one of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site is enough of a bucket list sight to be a unique place to visit in itself, but the addition of the extraordinary diversity of outdoor activities on offer is what makes Victoria Falls truly unique.

Zambezi River at dusk

The adventures are seemingly endless : go bungee jumping in one of the world’s most spectacular locations, fly like a bird in a tiny microlight plane, track down endangered White rhinos on foot, swing like a human pendulum across the steep gorge, abseil down a cliff, zipline through the treetops and go cage diving with crocodiles – and that’s just for starters.

On the mighty Zambezi River , you can experience some of the best whitewater rafting on the planet. Tackle rapids face-first on a bodyboard, shoot across the water on a jet boat, and swim in a natural infinity pool on the edge of Victoria Falls.

Go on a relaxing multi-day canoeing safari where you’ll be immersed in the wilderness, spotting elephants from just a few meters away and sleeping on riverside beaches under the stars.

There are many ways to explore the area around the falls, from cycling tours and horseback rides to game drives in the two national parks on either side of the border.

Another reason Victoria Falls is a unique destination is that there’s really something for every kind of traveler in just a small area on either side of the falls. In terms of budgets, there’s a huge range of lodging – everything from riverside campsites to high-end luxury hotels .

Zambezi Crescent, Victoria Falls River Lodge, Zambezi Reserve, near Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe.

Families are well catered to : hotels are child-friendly, and there’s a host of activities for all ages, while solo travelers will find it easy to meet other people and have fun on group activities. Luxury lodges offer lots of special touches for romantic couples and honeymooners , and adventure-seekers will be in their element with the amount of adrenaline-inducing fun on offer.

Travelers who prefer serene activities will discover plenty of quiet pleasures at Victoria Falls. Enjoy high tea on manicured lawns, relaxing spa treatments, sundowner cocktails on sunset river cruises, gourmet dinner onboard an old steam train chugging its way through a safari park, and sipping wine while being paddled on a raft down the Zambezi .

While you explore the paths around Victoria Falls, you’ll be able to spot many birds (look out for Hornbills, Fork-tailed drongos, African paradise flycatchers, and Goliath herons) and some mammals in the lush forest, such as Chacma baboons, Vervet monkeys, Banded mongooses and if you’re lucky, warthog and elusive bushbuck. Hotels on either side of the falls also attract animals, including warthogs, zebras, and giraffes who graze on their manicured lawns.

Depending on where you stay, wildlife spotting can be done from the comfort of your balcony. For more wildlife and big game, there are two national parks, one in Zimbabwe and one in Zambia , where you can enjoy a variety of safari experiences.

The African paradise flycatcher can be seen in and around Vic Falls

On the Zimbabwean side of the falls , the Zambezi National Park has the Big Four (only rhinos are missing), as well as many more animals in beautiful mopane woodland and forest landscapes, including African wild dogs, giraffes, waterbuck, bushbuck, impala, and sable antelope, and lots of hippo and crocodiles in the river. It’s easy to drive yourself around the park, but you can also take walking safaris accompanied by a guide, which will get you close to animals on foot.

Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park in Zambia, while the smallest in the country at only 23km2 (9 square miles), boasts an impressive range of species, including buffalo, elephant, Burchell’s zebra, giraffe, bushbuck, and sable antelope.

The star highlight of the park is tracking White rhinos (which were reintroduced from South Africa) on foot. Rhinos are absent from many parks, so this is a great chance to see them, and tracking these fascinating creatures is a memorable and thrilling experience.

Birding is a highlight of a trip to Victoria Falls. 470 species of birds have been recorded in both these parks and in the Victoria Falls area, including Pel’s fishing owl, African skimmers, Taita falcon, African finfoot, Verreaux’s eagle, African fish eagle, Miombo pied barbet, Collared palm thrush, Lanner falcon, Goliath heron, osprey, and Half-collared kingfisher.

The Zambezi River is home to more than 75 species of fish, including the famous Tigerfish. Fishing trips on the river allow anglers to try their hand at catching this toothy predator. Meanwhile, relaxing river cruises and canoeing trips (which can be multi-day adventures) in Zimbabwe and Zambia are a great way of seeing the area’s wildlife, including hippos and crocodiles, elephants drinking and bathing on the banks, antelopes, and lots of birds.

Only an hour’s drive from Victoria Falls, Hwange National Park is Zimbabwe’s flagship reserve and one of the top safari destinations in Africa. It’s home to 40 000 elephants, buffalo, rhinos, leopards, lions, one of the continent’s largest African wild dog populations, and antelope such as roan and sable. The park is easily accessible and can be explored in a sedan car – you don’t need to rent a 4×4.

Less than 100km (62mi) away from the town of Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, just over the border in northern Botswana, Chobe National Park has one of the most significant concentrations of wildlife in Africa and, with 50 000 pachyderms, hosts the largest elephant population in the world. There’s plenty more to see, from the rest of the Big Five to roan and sable antelope, cheetah, hyenas, wild dogs, and zebra.

Cheetah play during a brief thunderstorm

Chobe and Hwange are popular safari destinations to combine with a trip to Victoria Falls, but if you’re short on time, you can also make day trips to both parks from either Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe or Livingstone in Zambia .

Apart from the fact that there are so many activities to do in the Victoria Falls area, an excellent reason to return is to experience the waterfalls and the outdoor adventures in changing seasons. Victoria Falls is very different month by month. The level of water in the Zambezi River changes with seasonal rains, which means that at times the waterfalls are thunderously dramatic, sending up so much spray that you will get completely soaked on the cliffside footpaths.

Other times the river is running so low that the falls dry up on the Zambian side . In the summer months, the foliage is lush and green, while in winter, the vegetation thins out and turns brown.

Different seasons are best for varying activities, and returning to Victoria Falls at different times of the year means you’ll be able to experience all of them, from the best whitewater rafting during the low-water period of August to December to wildlife viewing in the national parks on either side of the falls during the dry winter months of June to October .

Expect superb bird watching in the rainy summer season from November to April , when you can spot migratory birds and birds with their full colourful plumage.

Victoria Falls is also a great place to base yourself for trips to other safari destinations in Zimbabwe, such as Hwange National Park , and Chobe National Park in Botswana. On repeat visits to Victoria Falls you’ll have time to explore the wonderful wildlife just an hour’s drive away.

Victoria falls: everything you need to know.

Victoria Falls, affectionately known as Mosi-oa Tunya by locals, meaning “the smoke that thunders.”

Victoria Falls is one of the most famous and iconic destinations in Africa. It is also one of the most visited tourist destinations on the continent. Your trip to Zimbabwe or Zambia, whichever side you decide to visit, is simply incomplete without a visit to Vic Falls.

As travel experts, we visit the Victoria Falls frequently, and there is only one word to describe our experience: breathtaking.

Victoria falls Zimbabwe

Vic Falls stretches along the Zambezi River and forms the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia. The Kololo tribe, who lived in the area in the 1800s, named it “ Mosi-oa-Tunya “—’The Smoke That Thunders’. You can see columns of spray from miles away when, during the peak of the rainy season, more than five hundred million cubic meters of water per hour plummet over the edge. This is a distance of almost two kilometers and into a gorge of over one hundred meters below.

Which side is better: Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, or Zambia?

This is largely dependent on your safari expectations. Both sides have breathtaking views of Vic Falls, but your lodging choices and leisure preferences may impact your stay. Luckily, we have camps in both Zimbabwe and Zambia. In fact, you’ll be spoilt for choice when deciding.

It is important to note that the Victoria Falls Zimbabwe is home to about three-quarters the Falls, which means, it has the best vantage point.

If you want the best of both worlds, the Victoria Falls Bridge allows you to quickly cross the border. All you’ll need is a passport and a double-entry/multiple-entry visa, which you can get at the border. This means that if you live on the Zambian side and wish to see the Falls from the Zimbabwean side, you can do so on a day trip—and vice versa.

vic falls

Walking down the footpaths of Victoria Falls National Park can be quite an experience. You’ll find yourself in a lush rainforest, and then reach gorge-edge viewpoints. Here, you will be met by the majestic Main Falls, which thunders down into the rock chasm below, causing tremors beneath your feet.

If you’re more interested in getting close to the cascades of water, then you should make your way to the Zambian side of the Vic Falls. During high-water season, you will be able to stroll along the paved trails on the waterfall’s edge and traverse the heart-racing Knife-Brink Bridge—an exhilarating (and drenching) trek along the edge of the precipice, about 100 meters (328 feet) above the gorge.

Even during low-water season, you can follow the trail down to the boiling pot, a large vortex at the bottom of the waterfall. Look up and be amazed at the sheer size of this natural phenomenon!

Is Victoria Falls the World’s Largest Waterfall?

The Victoria Falls is known as the greatest falling curtain of water on the planet and is now one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.

The Victoria Falls is the world’s largest waterfall.

victoria falls zimbabwe

Though it may not be the widest or the highest , Vic Falls is classified as the largest because of its combined width of 1,708 metres and height of 108 metres. Surpassing the magnificent Niagara and Iguacu Falls.

Vic Falls comprises of five different ‘smaller’ waterfalls. One is in Zambia and four are in Zimbabwe. On a Zimbabwe safari , you can expect to see the Devil’s Cataract, Main Falls, Rainbow Falls, and Horseshoe Falls. In Zambia, you will find the Eastern Cataract.

Let’s Take a Closer Look at Each of These Smaller Falls:

The Devil’s Cataract

Devil’s Cataract is 70m high and named after the nearby island which local tribes still inhabit today. These tribes often partake in ceremonies, which were referred to as ‘devilish’ by missionaries who frequented the island. This is why the cataract was named Devil’s Cataract.

Main Falls is 93 meters high and is the biggest falls of the five. It also offers the most spectacular view of the Falls. Main Falls is surrounded by a wide curtain of water with a peak flow rate at 700 000 cubic metres per hour. The volume of water at the top of the falls is so large that the water is battered and transformed into a thick mist by strong rising winds.

Horseshoe Falls

Horseshoe Falls is 95 meteres high. This falls takes the shape of a horseshoe and has the lowest volume of water. It usually dries up between October and November.

The Eastern Cataract

The Eastern Cataract is found in Zambia and is 101 metres high. You will also be able to see the Eastern Cataract when visiting Danger Point, an exposed, rocky, raised mass of land with low shrubs and grasses, which is often battered by strong winds. The rocks here are extremely slippery and travellerss should stay away from the edge.

Rainbow Falls

Rainbow Falls is 108 meters height, which means that it is the highest point among all five. If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to see a beautiful rainbow on a clear day. On occassion, when a full moon is on display you may even see a lunar rainbow.

The Victoria Falls does attract wildlife, including warthogs, zebras, giraffes, chacma baboons, vervet monkeys, and banded mongooses. Depending on where you stay, you might be able to spot some of these animals around your camp.

If you’re an avid birdwatcher, you’re in for a treat. Hornbills, fork-tailed drongos, African paradise flycatchers, and Goliath herons are all around the Vic Falls.

Remember, there are three national parks around the Vic Falls, Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park , Chobe National Park, Hwange National Park, and the Lower Zambezi National Park.

Wildlife in the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park

The Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park provides an opportunity to view the most common animals found in national parks across the country. The Park has an abundance of elephant, buffalo, hippo, zebra and many antelope species. Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park is also one of very few parks where the white rhino can still be tracked. White rhinos are rare in many parks so this is an excellent opportunity to see them. It’s also an unforgettable experience to track these amazing creatures on foot.

Wildlife in the Chobe National Park

Chobe National Park is home to the wild dog, leopard, lion, and hyena. You will also find large herds of buffalo and elephants in the park. The rhino population has been reduced, but it is being slowly and successfully reintroduced to Chobe National Park’s private areas. Chobe is therefore one of the national parks around the Victoria Falls that is home to the Big Five.

Wildlife in the Hwange National Park

Hwange, Zimbabwe’s largest national park, is home to elephants, buffalo, wildebeests, gemsbok, and sable. The apex predators include lions, leopards, and wild dogs, as well as hyenas, servals, honey badgers, and African wildcats. You will find a variety of landscapes, including teak forests, ilala Palm islands, sandveld, savannah, acacia woodlands, sandveld, ilala Palm islands, and savannah, making for a fascinating Zimbabwe safari .

Wildlife in the Lower Zambezi National Park

Lower Zambezi National Park is home to a wide range of faunal species, including reptiles and amphibians, mammals, birds, fish, and insects. They are found in different densities, in diverse eco-systems, and with varying degrees of complexity.

hippo vic falls

Depending on when you decide to visit, you may see elephants, buffalo, waterbuck, hippo, and crocodiles during your stay. These animals usually grace the waterbanks of the Lower Zambezi River. There are also good numbers of leopards, lions, and hyenas among the carnivores. The wild dog (african hunting dogs), serval, and the African wildcat are other commonly seen animals. including the side striped jackal, dwarf, slender, and banded monkeygoose, and the aardvark, which are classified under the smaller animals.

Because there is ample water and food, these animals are dispersed widely during the dry season. They are concentrated on the valley floor, banks and islands of the Zambezi River during the dry season.

When to go.

The best time to experience the Vic Falls is during Feburary to May, just after the summer rains. You’ll be able to see the largest falling water column in the world flowing at its highest volume. Although the green season only begins in November, the first spring rains usually start in May. However, it takes time for the water from the Angolan Highlands to flow down into the series of huge gorges. After a dry winter, the Falls take a while to gather steam. Vic Falls can be overwhelming. The combination of noise, heat, and moisture creates an incredible natural spectacle.

The Victoria Falls is twice as high as North America’s Niagara Falls. You can hear the thunderous roar for miles. The water’s sheer force propels a column of spray high into the air, drenching and engulfing the Falls’ edge in fine mist. This is what gave rise to the traditional name Mosi-oa Tunya, or ‘The Smoke that Thunders’.

It is important to note that Victoria Falls’ most spectacular spray does not coincide with the peak safari season in Chobe, Botswana, or in Hwange, Zimbabwe. Swimming in the Devil’s Pool or certain sections of whitewater rapids are dangerous activities that you shouldn’t do when the water is high and fast.

If you aren’t comfortable travelling in the green season, February to May may not be the best time to take advantage of the Fall’s proximity to Botswana. Combining a Chobe river safari and a Victoria Falls safari is best from June through August. You can expect great game viewing, cool days and nights, little rain, and lots of water thundering above the precipice.

Climate in Victoria Falls

The climate is subtropical in the vicinity of Victoria Falls, which is located approximately 900 metres above sea level. The winters are mild and dry from the middle of May until the middle of August, but the nights are cold during this time.

dabula safaris victoria falls

The climate is subtropical in the vicinity of Victoria Falls , which is located approximately 900 metres above sea level. The winters are mild and dry from the middle of May until the middle of August, but the nights are cold during this time. Temperatures easily reach 35 degrees and sometimes even up to 40 degrees, even though the humidity is not as high as it is in the summer.

This hot period occurs between September and November, just before the rainy season, and is actually the hottest of the year. The warmest temperature of the year occurs in October. On the other hand, during the winter months, the weather is pleasant during the day, but the temperature at night can go quite close to freezing.

Victoria Falls Main Gorges

The Zambezi River’s most notable characteristic is the spectacular waterfall known as Victoria Falls, which forms a curtain of cascading water that is the largest in the world. After travelling a distance of 150 metres (500 feet) via first gorge’s exit that is 110 metres wide (360 feet), the entire volume of the Zambezi River then enters a succession of gorges that wind in a snake-like pattern.

victoria falls gorges

The water that is flowing into the second gorge takes an abrupt curve to the right, which has resulted in the formation of a very deep pool known as the Boiling Pot. This section of the canyon is approximately 150 metres broad, and it is known as the Boiling Pot because of the massive, sluggish swirl and severe boiling turbulence that occurs at times of high water. Access to the Boiling Pot is possible from the Zambian side via a difficult trail; nevertheless, the view looking back up the falls makes the ascent more than worthwhile. The Boiling Pot is frequently surrounded by wildlife that have been swept over the falls, such as hippos, and elephants.

The walls of the chasm are virtually vertical and have an average height of around 120 metres; however, the level of the river within the walls can vary by up to 20 metres depending on the time of year (rainy vs dry).

Can You  See the Falls From Zambia & Zimbabwe?

The Zambian side offers views of the remaining one quarter of the Falls, while the Zimbabwean side offers views of 75% of the waterfall.

Are Moonfalls Created By The Falls?

A moonbow is a rare and extraordinary natural occurrence that can only be seen in two locations on the face of the earth; one of those locations is Victoria Falls. A rainbow is a stunning natural phenomena. When the light of a full moon shines on the Falls, an incredible phenomenon known as a lunar rainbow may sometimes be seen there.

Does it Rains All Day in the Vic Falls Rainforest?

You can locate the Victoria Falls Rainforest on the Zimbabwean side of the Falls. This rainforest is the only area on world where it rains every single day of the year. It is highly advised that guests go into the forest and check out the verdant new growth that the recent rains have brought to the region.

Can You Swim Up to the River’s Edge

In the event that you are a traveller with a high level of adrenaline, you can find it enjoyable to swim up to the edge of the Falls at Devil’s Pool with your guide. Due to the fact that it requires you to swim in the Zambezi River and rely on the river to transport you, this is not something that should really be tried without careful contemplation first.

Devils Pool Victoria Falls

However, when you finally get there, the sensation is one of pure exhilaration. Think of it as the most spectacular infinity pool in the entire planet! This is something that can only be done from September through December, when the water levels are at their lowest.

Is it True that 500 Litres of Water Fall Every Minute at Vic Falls?

The quantities are so large that they are virtually difficult to fathom. To put that into perspective, that is the same as having 200 olympic swimming pools . It moves at a pace of 1088 metres per second.

We offer morning (6am pick-up) and afternoon (2:30pm pick-up) game walks and game drives. Our evening game drive, with dinner at the Jafuta, picks up at 3:35pm. In total the walks and drive last between 3 and 3.5 hours.

For the morning walks and drives guests enjoy a breakfast of muffins, fruit, yogurt and eggs, tea, coffee and water. For the afternoon game drives and walks, you’ll be served snacks, beers, soft drinks and water. After the evening game drive, a two course a la carte dinner is served, with a cash bar at the restaurant. We include a fleece poncho to keep you warm in the winter and/or early mornings.

*Park fees not included

Our guides train for four years to become professional guides and become qualified to lead walking safaris. All guides are licenced to carry a firearm and do so on the walking trips. They also carry a first aid kit and a radio to communicate with Shearwater HQ.

Wear neutral colours – no bright colours – and comfortable walking shoes. The mornings and evenings can be chilly so bring something warm. Wearing long pants is advised as you will be walking through the bush.

A camera and binoculars, warm clothing and, if it’s the rainy season, a rain jacket.

Any valuables and food.

For your safety there will be a maximum of 6 guests on a game walk and 10 guests on a game drive. Both experiences require a minimum of 2 guests to take place.

For a game drive, all guests must be over 4 years old and there are no fitness restrictions. For the game walk, all guests must be over 13 years old. There’s no upper age limit, but you must be fit enough to walk through the bush, in the heat, for several hours.

We can’t guarantee sightings, but we often see elephant, buffalo, giraffe, hippo and several species of plains game. While less common, we’ve seen lions and leopards. Guides will also talk about the flora, fauna and bird life of the Zambezi National Park.

Shearwater has public liability insurance of $2m USD, underwritten by Lloyds of London in place for all activities.

Palm River Hotel

One of the world’s most loved iconic landmarks and natural wonders, Victoria Falls is regarded as the largest waterfall in the world due to it’s combined 1,7 metres width and 108 metres height. The Falls roars like thunder as the water belts down over the edge and creates a spray that resembles a mist of smoke, heeding the name Mosi-oa-Tunya which translates to “The Smoke that Thunders”.

Victoria Falls can be viewed from both Zambia and Zimbabwe , and both regions offer an incredible selection of activities, including scenic helicopter flights over the falls, river cruises, white water rafting, and day trips to the world-renowned Chobe National Park.

Zambia has the added attraction of Livingstone Island where those daring enough can swim on the edge of the Falls.

With mild temperatures, virtually no rain and a low malaria risk, the dry May to October winter season is generally seen as the best time to visit Zimbabwe for a safari , although it is important to note that September and October are extremely hot and dry months.

The best time to travel to Victoria Falls , on the other hand, is at the end of the summer rainy season when the falls are in full flood with April and May offering the most dramatic views.

August to December is the low water season and is regarded as the best time to go white-water rafting in Victoria Falls - the volume and speed of the water is reduced and the rapids are more exposed.

Zimbabwe is a country known for its dramatic landscapes and diverse wildlife and is, therefore, the perfect destination for travelers looking for a true adventure. The top attraction is the awe-inspiring Victoria Falls which is located within the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park. Internationally recognized as one of the “Seven Wonders Of The World”, Victoria Falls is a spectacular sight with never-ending rainbows and the greatest falling curtain of water. The sheer force of the Falls sounds like thunder and the spray of water looks like smoke, ringing true to its name “The Smoke that Thunders”.

Zimbabwe is home to two game reserves that offer phenomenal safari experiences.

Mana Pools is in the far north of Zimbabwe and is known for its large populations of elephants, hippos and Nile crocodiles that congregate around the pools which hold water all year round. Hwange is in west Zimbabwe and its sprawling grasslands and mopane woods are home to large elephant herds, lions and African wild dogs.

Explore Lake Kariba , which is the world's largest man-made lake offering spectacular views, stunning sunsets, great fishing, boating opportunities, and various water sports.

At more than twice the height of Niagara Falls, Victoria Falls is a UNESCO world heritage site and 7 th wonder of the world. It is situated on the mighty Zambezi river in the heart of Southern Africa, close to many iconic game reserves like Chobe and Hwange National Parks. Traditionally known as Mosi-oa-Tunya or ‘the Smoke that Thunders’, Victoria Falls is often the end point of a Southern African safari tour.

Victoria Falls is known as Africa’s Adventure Capital. Besides touring the Falls on foot, you can also get a birds eye view from a helicopter or microlight . This experience is nicknamed the ‘Flight of Angels’. David Livingstone famously wrote on seeing the Victoria Falls for the first time in 1855 that “Scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight” .

The mighty Zambezi River produces the best white water rafting in the world. Its electrifying, scary and adrenaline-fuelled.

Straddled between  Zambia  and  Zimbabwe  is the historic Victoria Falls bridge . The Victoria Falls Bungee Jump is undoubtedly the most scenic bungee jump in the world. With the falls as your backdrop, and the Zambezi River flowing beneath you, this is sure to be the greatest bungee jump of your life.

Right on the very edge of the Falls is Devils Pool , with a sheer drop and close up and personal view of the side of the falls – indeed a top bucket list experience.

Victoria Falls village has some excellent African restaurants where you get to taste cuisine from all over the continent. Partake in interactive drumming and dine to traditional song and dance. There’s plenty of shopping for curios and other fascinating things at markets in town. Or simply relax and enjoy the sunshine after a hard day of pure fun and safari.

Victoria Falls Tours & Safaris

Zambezi National Park is only a 10 minute drive from town, it is really impressive, home to scenic landscapes, the Big Five, wild dog, hippos, cheetah, crocodiles, giraffe and over 500 bird species. For more of a wilderness experience without the sound of cars, you can partake in walking safaris with a professional guide or explore the park on a horseback safari .

Chobe National Park in Botswana is only an hour away, we can organise a full day safari into this great park where you spend 3 to 4 hours on a 4×4 safari with a professional ranger. After a hearty lunch on the banks of the Chobe river you debark on a safari river cruise and experience nature at its best – the river, the animals and the sunset!

Here you’ll get up close and personal with hippo, crocodile and a mind-boggling array of water birds. You can see massive herds of Elephant and Buffalo as they converge along waterfront and cross the mighty Chobe river.

Hwange National Park is also a day trip from Victoria Falls. This iconic reserve is Zimbabwe’s greatest and largest, with thriving wildlife and beautiful scenery. Victoria Falls – 3 days

Free safari planning

Safari experiences that you will not find with any other travel company. We know Africa best and will get you to the right place & time to enjoy the greatest shows on Earth!

Victoria Falls on the Zambezi River is one of Africa’s most iconic destinations and deservedly on many bucket lists. That awe-inspiring vertical drop of 108m into the chasm below and the mist spray curtain during the full flood that can be seen and heard from afar make for a truly unforgettable experience. Its local name is ‘Mosi-oa-Tunya’, which means ‘the smoke that thunders’.

Just wandering the streets of this quaint town is a special experience as you negotiate for souvenirs, dodge warthogs (and elephants!), hang out with locals and sample a range of restaurants and bars. But of course, most people go to Vic Falls for the adventure activities, which never fail to enthral ALL visitors - regardless of age and appetite for danger

Three days of non-stop action at Africa’s adventure capital - the ideal for a short break or add-on to another safari

Length: 3 days / 2 nights, but we will amend to suit your needs Group Size: Flexible – you tell us how many in your party Location: Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe Departure Dates: To suit you

Where does one begin to describe the awe and thrill of Victoria Falls? The Falls are undeniably the main attraction, and there is little doubt why. Twice the height of Niagara Falls, this is the world's largest uninterrupted sheet of falling water, displacing 500 million litres of water per minute (the equivalent of 200 Olympic-sized swimming pools). Shared by the two countries, Zimbabwe and Zambia, protected within two national parks, Mosi-oa-Tunya NP and Victoria Falls NP, this is a UNESCO world heritage site and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.

It’s also an adventure centre of note. You could stay for ages and enjoy a different activity every day, from bungee jumping, gorge swinging and white water rafting, to helicopter and microlight flights (a.k.a the flight of angels), sunset boat and steam train cruises, horse riding, game drives, canoe trips, and so much more.

During your stay on the Zimbabwe side of Victoria Falls, walk across the bridge to visit the Zambian side, which offers an exhilarating walk across the ‘Knife-edge Bridge’, a close-up view of the ‘Boiling Pot’ (a scary whirlpool at the base of the falls) and, for the really adventurous, a dip in the famous ‘Devil’s Pool’.

And Victoria Falls is ideally located to combine with wildlife safaris to Botswana’s Chobe and the Okavango Delta, Zimbabwe’s Mana Pools, Kariba and the nearby Hwange NP and Zambia’s Kafue, South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi.

  • Cruise along the Chobe and the mighty Zambezi River on boat safaris
  • Visit the thundering Victoria Falls waterfalls on a guided Victoria Falls Rainforest tour
  • Experience large herds of elephants and aquatic wildlife such as hippo and crocodile
  • Embark on an open safari vehicle 4x4 game drives searching for free-roaming African wildlife

  • Optional “Flight of Angels” helicopter flight over the Victoria Falls

On the first day of your Best of Victoria Falls and Chobe safari package, you can fly in from Johannesburg or Cape Town directly to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. After a private road transfer to Old Drift lodge, you’ll have some time to settle in and explore your surroundings.

Upstream of the iconic Victoria Falls, on the banks of the Zambezi River, lies Old Drift Lodge. The lodge boasts luxury accommodation overlooking the pristine Zambezi National Park, a mere 7 kilometers from the mighty Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. Old Drift Lodge is nestled within a wild paradise frequented by elephant, buffalo, herds of sable, eland, zebra, giraffe, kudu, waterbuck and impala.

The main lodge area has 360 degree views, North facing onto the Zambezi & South facing onto a water hole. A 7 kilometre stretch of river flows between the camp and the town of Victoria Falls, making Old Drift Lodge the closest lodge within the National Park to Victoria Falls.

The highlight of your first day will definitely be the sunset cruise along the Zambezi River with access to the luxury deck and your choice of sundowner as you watch the natural show, as the light fades over the untouched landscape.

Stock up on a good breakfast just before you embark on your guided tour of Victoria Falls. First stop, the falls! This massive sheet of falling water and the spray that it produces is mesmerizing, to say the least. One of the largest waterfalls in the world, you will be taken through its rich rainforest to learn about its flora and fauna. Listen to the thundering water as you feel the mist of the spray around you.

Go on a scenic walk through the tropical rainforest and stop at the “Big tree” a giant Baobab, ideal for some memorable photographs. Next up is a visit to the Vulture Culture center where you can learn more about these fascinating and often overlooked scavenger birds of prey.

In the afternoon, put your feet up and relax. Or, you can make use of the hourly courtesy shuttle to Victoria Falls city center. Perhaps wander down to the local craft market where you can bargain for the iconic local soapstone carvings, masks, jewelry and Batik fabric.

In the evening you will be picked up and taken to an ethnic restaurant for a traditional dinner in a BOMA. Live traditional entertainment will be provided creating a memorable cultural experience. Maybe you will even be brave enough to try a Mopane Worm.

After breakfast, say goodbye to Zimbabwe as you catch your private road transfer to the Chobe National Park in Botswana. After the border crossing, enjoy a scenic drive through the Chobe National Park. En-route, keep a lookout for buffalo, giraffes and elephant as well as many other types of wildlife.

You will be spending two nights at Ngoma safari Lodge located in the Chobe Forest Reserve just 3km from the Chobe National Park (a region renowned for its outstanding wildlife, in particular the famous Chobe Elephants, and home to more than 75 mammal and 450 bird species), Ngoma Safari Lodge commands awe-inspiring views over the Chobe River and floodplains.

In the late afternoon cruise down Chobe River with a drink in hand and watch the African sunset. The river is filled with big pods of hippos and some of the biggest crocodiles in Africa.

Expect a massive dose of adventure. From safari cruises along the Chobe River to 4×4 game drives scouting for elephants (of which there are plenty), buffalos, lions, hyena and even African wild dog if you are lucky.

The birdlife is also excellent, from ubiquitous fish eagles to a myriad of herons and waders. Be sure to keep your camera fully charged throughout your stay, as there is always something to see around every corner. The Chobe truly is a mecca for wildlife-lovers.

There will also be some time to relax, perhaps have a refreshing dip in the swimming pool or unwind on the game viewing deck with a good book.

After a good night’s sleep, you will awake to a vibrant, fresh breakfast with a freshly brewed pot of hot coffee. Enjoy your last breakfast on the deck as you take in the scenery surrounding the marina one last time.

You will be taken back to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, where you can catch your flight out. If you feel 5 days is not quite long enough, you can easily combine this Best of Victoria Falls and Chobe Safari Package with another experience. Perhaps a few days in the Okavango Delta

Safaris From Victoria Falls - Compare 266 Tours

Some travelers visit Victoria Falls and return home without going on safari. But considering how many wonderful national parks there are within easy reach of Victoria Falls, it really would be a shame to come this far and not go on safari. The popularity of Victoria Falls means that there are lots of highly professional operators with experience in combining it with parks all across this corner where Zimbabwe, Zambia and Botswana meet (and Namibia is also not far away). To make it work, start planning now, because leaving it until the last minute or until you’re in the destination to plan your safari will seriously limit what really are some incredible options.

5 Questions About Safaris From Victoria Falls

Anthony Ham

Answered by

Anthony ham.

dabula safaris victoria falls

Where can I go on a safari tour from Victoria Falls?

“Victoria Falls is in the heart of some incredible wildlife country. Closest to the Falls on the Zimbabwean side of the border is Zambezi National Park, with its long frontage along the banks of the Zambezi River. Just across the border in Zambia, Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park is another possibility. Both of these parks host a fair selection of general wildlife, but big cats (lions and leopards) are quite scarce in Zambezi NP and absent altogether from Mosi-oa-Tunya. If you’re willing to travel a little farther, then you might consider Hwange National Park (in Zimbabwe) or Chobe National Park (across the border in Botswana). Both have amazing wildlife and are close enough to Victoria Falls to be visited as a day trip (though an overnight safari would be more relaxed). If you’re willing to fly, which may not be an affordable option for some travelers, you could go even farther afield, including to Matusadona or Mana Pools National Parks in Zimbabwe, South Luangwa or Kafue National Parks in Zambia, or the Okavango Delta in Botswana.”

Is Chobe National Park or Hwange National Park better for a safari from Victoria Falls?

“Chobe (Botswana) and Hwange (Zimbabwe) are two of my favorite wildlife parks in southern Africa, and I would find it impossible to choose between the two. Why not visit both? Then again, each offers quite a different experience. Chobe is a wonderfully varied park with two main wildlife areas. Chobe riverfront, close to where Zimbabwe, Botswana and Namibia intersect, is fabulous and the wildlife viewing is concentrated in quite a small and manageable area. A little farther away is Savuti, which feels more remote but is just as good for animals. You can visit Hwange National Park without having to cross any international borders (if you’re coming from the Zimbabwean section of Vic Falls). Like Chobe, it’s a vast park with a fantastic habitat that ranges from light woodlands to salt lakes.”

How many days do I need for a trip from Victoria Falls?

“How much time you need for your safari tour from Victoria Falls will depend on how much time you have, what you can afford and where you would like to go. Leaving aside the question of cost for a moment, a half-day is sufficient for a quick safari into Zambezi National Park (Zimbabwe) or Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park in Zambia, both of which are less than 30 minutes’ drive from the falls. Heading further afield, several operators offer 1-day safaris from Vic Falls to Hwange National Park (Zimbabwe) or Chobe National Park (Botswana). It’s around three hours in either direction from Vic Falls to Hwange’s main gate, and almost two hours to Chobe, so a 1-day safari will tend to be quite a rushed business, but it is still definitely worthwhile if that’s all the time you can afford. A far more relaxed option would be to dedicate 2 to 3 days to either Hwange or Chobe. Both parks deserve as much time as you can give them, so adding extra days to each is always worth it. With a week in total, you could maybe even visit Vic Falls, and both Hwange and Chobe, although, again, 10 days would be even better.”

Which animals can I expect to see?

“Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park is one of the reliable places in the region to see white rhinos (you may even be able to go walking with them). Zambezi National Park is good for elephant, hippo, giraffe, buffalo and spotted hyena, and big cats are always possible. Chobe is known for its elephant herds, and you’ll almost certainly see them (as well as buffalo, hippo, crocodile and more) on your trip along Chobe riverfront. Lions are also a possibility but leopards and cheetahs can be elusive, though travelers consistently report seeing both at Savuti. Other possibilities include zebra, waterbuck, impala and puku. Chobe is also outstanding for birding. Hwange is every bit as good for seeing animals, with elephant and lion the major highlights. Also possible are leopard, cheetah, African wild dog, buffalo, sable and roan antelope, oryx and so much more.”

How much will this safari cost?

“How much you pay for your safari depends on lots of different factors, including where you decide to go, what season you’re traveling in, how long your safari is, what kind of accommodation you choose, and so on. Another variable is the type of safari you choose. A private safari where you have the guide, vehicle and driver all to yourself will always cost more than a group safari, while a self-drive safari will usually cost somewhere in between. A safari that includes flying between the various parks will also cost significantly more. If you are looking at a short safari, expect to pay around US$55 to US$110 per person for a half-day excursion into Zambezi or Mosi-oa-Tunya NPs, or US$150 to US$300 for a 1-day trip to Hwange and Chobe. For a cheap, multiple-day camping safari to Chobe or Hwange in the low season, you might be able to organize a tour for around US$150 to US$200 per person per day. For an all-inclusive luxury safari with flights, prices might start at US$450 per person per day, but could cost double that. Regardless of how much you pay, always make sure you understand what’s included and what’s not included in any price you’re quoted.”
