All about the Ferrytale Fireworks: A Sparkling Dessert Cruise

All about the Ferrytale Fireworks: A Sparkling Dessert Cruise

Have you heard of the Ferrytale Fireworks: A Sparkling Dessert Cruise ? We are BIG fans of the Magic Kingdom Dessert Parties that you can book inside the park and we honestly had high hopes for this one, too. Alas, let’s just say… it didn’t exactly meet the mark.

But before we get too far into our honest review, let’s go over everything you need to know about the Ferrytale Fireworks: A Sparkling Dessert Cruise, including pricing, what’s included, and what you can expect to be served. After that, we’ll get into the nitty-gritty, and we’ll tell you our thoughts on whether or not the Ferrytale Fireworks cruise is worth it.

Let’s get into it…

In this article

What is the Ferrytale Fireworks: A Sparkling Dessert Cruise and where is it located?

Like other Magic Kingdom Dessert Parties , the Ferrytale Fireworks dessert cruise allows you to watch the Magic Kingdom fireworks while dining on a range of desserts and beverages (both non-alcoholic and alcoholic).

ferrytale fireworks a sparkling dessert cruise

But, unlike the parties that happen inside the park, this one takes place on a ferryboat that sails on the Seven Seas Lagoon just outside the entrance of Magic Kingdom. While it sounds enchanting, it doesn’t quite capture the grandeur you’d experience land-side. Reflections on the lagoon and distant firework sounds are a different experience, and not necessarily the magical one you might expect.

How much does the Ferrytale Fireworks: A Sparkling Dessert Cruise cost?

This dessert party is not cheap.

The Ferrytale Fireworks: A Sparkling Dessert Cruise costs (tax and gratuity is included):

  • $130 per adult
  • $80 per child (ages 3 to 9)

In comparison, the ones inside the park range from $99 – $109 per adult and $59 per child up for a reserved standing location, to $119 – $129 for adults and $75 per child for a reserved seated location.

Of course, you’d have to have a park ticket to book one of the parties inside Magic Kingdom, but you’d also get a much, much better view of the fireworks.

What is included?

Lanyards & mickey vision glasses.

Upon check in, all guests are given a lanyard that lights up with “Mickey Vision” glasses. You simply hold them up (if you’d like) and any type of lighting will be transformed into Mickeys!

lanyard

The lanyards are a cute addition and the kids seemed to like them. However, the lights were really bright and we kept ours turned off.

Scavenger hunt

On the ship, there is also a little scavenger hunt for kids (and adults).

It helped to pass the time while we were waiting for the show to start and was a cute little addition to the trip.

Electrical Water Pageant Viewing

On nights when the Electrical Water Pageant ‘s schedule overlaps with the Ferrytale Fireworks Cruise, as long as the waters are safe, you’ll be positioned in a great spot to watch it before the fireworks begin.

Desserts and Drinks

Now for the important part: the drinks and desserts!

ferrytale fireworks a sparkling dessert cruise food menu list

Before we dive in, it’s important to note that if you or anyone in your party has any dietary restrictions, you should indicate so when booking online . In addition, be sure to notify a Cast Member, server, chef, or manager on duty of any dietary restrictions when arriving.

How do you book it?

You can begin booking the Ferrytale Fireworks: A Sparkling Dessert Cruise online or in the My Disney Experience app 60 days in advance.

Important: This particular dessert party cruise is only available on select Wednesday and Saturday nights, so you’ll want to plan accordingly. Same-day reservations can be made before 5 p.m. on a limited basis and are subject to availability.

confirmation for ferrytale fireworks sparkling dessert cruise

Full payment is due at the time of booking. There is a one-day cancellation policy, meaning the full price will be charged/forfeited if you don’t cancel within one-day or are a “no-show.”

How does check in work?

To board the ferryboat, you will need to check in for the dessert cruise at the Transportation and Ticket Center (TTC) to the left of the Ferryboat launch.

The TTC is the transportation hub for all of Walt Disney World . This is where you park if you drive to Magic Kingdom. It is also the only place you can catch (or transfer to) the monorail to Epcot. If you plan to take a taxi or Uber/Lyft to Magic Kingdom, this is the official drop-off spot for that, as well as being the place where some of the offsite buses drop off guests for Magic Kingdom.

The boat sets sail 50 minutes before the fireworks, and there will be no further boarding at that time. You need to make sure you arrive on time or else the boat will leave you.

When you arrive, look for the signs to the left of the walkway down to the boats.

You’ll check in and get your lanyard, which not only lights up, but also has your “Mickey View” goggles attached to it.

The holding area is covered and has some bench seating. Plus, while you wait, they give you a drink (options both with and without alcohol are available).

How is the view from Seven Seas Lagoon?

Now the tricky part – the view.

The view of the castle from the water isn’t bad. You’ll be able to see all the fireworks from this vantage point.

The boat has 2 levels, and the view from the top was definitely the best (and where we recommend you view the fireworks). Not only are the windows more wide open, the extra height helps you clear any trees that might be in the way:

ferrytale fireworks a sparkling dessert cruise view from upstairs

Compare that to the view from the bottom, where the window openings are a lot smaller:

ferrytale fireworks a sparkling dessert cruise

As you can see in the pictures, the projections aren’t really visible. You can see that they are there, you just can’t really SEE them (if that makes sense).

During the show, you are welcome to move around if you need to. Our cruise was only partially full so there was plenty of room upstairs for everyone to watch the show.

And yes – the music is piped in onto the boat . BUT, on our cruise, the sound cut out a few times (which was annoying).

Is the Ferrytale Fireworks cruise accessible?

Yes, those using wheelchairs and ECVs can be accommodated. Strollers are also permitted.

Is the Ferrytale Fireworks: A Sparkling Dessert Cruise worth it?

Now the hard part – is the Ferrytale Fireworks: A Sparkling Dessert Cruise worth it?

Unfortunately, we don’t think so and here are the 2 main reasons why:

  • Value for Money : Firstly, as lovely as the desserts were, we don’t think the overall experience justifies the cost. For that price, we could have had a top-tier meal at some of Disney’s best restaurants – including California Grill, where we could have had an equally good view of the fireworks from their observation deck. Read more about other places to watch the Magic Kingdom fireworks from outside the park .
  • View : Even though the fireworks are the main attraction, we felt the views from the boat were somewhat obstructed. It didn’t feel as magical as standing right in front of the castle or on Main Street. You can’t really see Tink or the projections. It was a good view – but it wasn’t GREAT.

View from the top of boat ferrytale fireworks a sparkling dessert cruise

But, while the Ferrytale Fireworks Dessert Cruise wasn’t a great fit for us, there are some people who might like it:

  • People who love the fireworks, but hate the crowds. Our boat was not crowded at all, which would be perfect for anybody who prefers to have space.
  • People who are sensitive to the sounds of the fireworks. Disney fireworks aren’t super loud, but things are even quietier out on the water.
  • Groups who want to see the fireworks but don’t have a park ticket. Although we think you’d be better served spending your money on a dinner at a Magic Kingdom area restaurant, if you can’t get a reservation or just prefer the idea of being on a boat, then this dessert party might be for you.

Other important details

What happens if there is bad weather.

The Ferrytale Fireworks cruise will still occur in inclement weather , but may be modified or canceled due to extreme weather conditions.

Fireworks at Magic Kingdom may be changed or canceled without prior notice due to inclement weather.

Are restrooms on board?

Yes, there are restrooms for event guests to utilize. But – they are “marine” restrooms, and our experience with them was not great. If people read the instructions, they probably are fine in a pinch, but we’d recommend using the bathroom right next to the check-in location before boarding.

ferrytale fireworks a sparkling dessert cruise bathroom

Do you need theme park tickets?

No, theme park admission is not required for this experience.

It might be a single destination, but Walt Disney World is essentially an entire city—one the size of San Francisco, in fact. You could easily spend an entire week (or more) exploring the resort’s four parks, two water parks, dozens of hotels and Disney Springs shopping and dining district. But if you’ve only got one day, you can definitely get a taste of everything Walt Disney World has to offer. It’s just going to take some strategizing.

If Money Is No Object: Hire a VIP Guide

The simplest solution is, of course, to spend a lot to get the best experience. Walt Disney World offers VIP tours , where the sky is the limit as to how much you can get done. A VIP tour guide will walk you through the parks, escorting you to the front of every line, and even transporting your group to other parks via private car. There are no lines, no waiting, no shuttles, and the shortest possible routes between attractions, sometimes taking your group “backstage” in the employees-only sections of the park. The downside? VIP tours cost $450-$900 per hour for groups of up to 10 people, tours must be booked for a minimum of seven hours, and guests must purchase park admission separately.

If You Want to See and Do as Much as Possible

Simple. Buy a single day Park Hopper ticket, which allows you to move between all four theme parks: Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Skip the more expensive Park Hopper Plus, which also gets you into the resort’s water parks—you won’t have time—but definitely add Genie+, the paid line-skipping service, to your ticket.

Your park day will begin a rope drop (Disney parlance for park opening) and end long after the nightly fireworks at Magic Kingdom—so wear your most comfortable shoes and get ready for a lot of steps. Animal Kingdom opens earliest, so start your day there. Opening times vary, but if the park opens at 8 a.m., in-the-know Disneyers will line up at least half an hour early. Once you’re in the gates, beeline to Kilimanjaro Safaris; many animals on the tour are more active in the morning and evening than in the heat of the day. Unless the wait is short, use the single rider line on Expedition Everest—Legend of the Forbidden Mountain, the park’s big roller coaster.

A Very Big Opportunity Crypto Suddenly Braced For A Tremendous China Earthquake After Bitcoin Ethereum And XRP Price Boom

That sweet 2tb galaxy black xbox series x will be mine cosmically, wwe nxt battleground results, winners and grades from the ufc apex.

Using Genie+, book Lightning Lane entry for a ride at Hollywood Studios, which will be your next park. Grab Slinky Dog Dash if you can, but that goes quickly, so you might want to choose Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway (the only ride starring the mouse at Disney) or Toy Story Mania.

Genie+ is tricky at first, but the rule is that you can book one Lightning Lane every two hours, or as soon as you’ve scanned into the attraction. If you book a Lightning Lane for a ride that you can immediately get on, book another one right after scanning in, and then set a timer for two hours, when you can book another. If you book a Lightning Lane for much later in the day, you can still book another at the two hour mark, even if you haven’t ridden yet. (Seriously, set a timer, it’s a huge help.) A great strategy is to start stacking evening Lightning Lanes early in the day so you can have a whole night of essentially no waits.

Plan to spend your late afternoon and early evening in EPCOT, where you can eat your way around the park while you take in rides. The park has the best array of walk-up kiosks with excellent food, which changes depending on which festival is currently happening at the park, like the EPCOT International Flower & Garden Festival in the spring or EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival in the fall.

Hit up Soarin’ Around the World, Journey into Imagination with Figment to see EPCOT’s mascot Figment , Frozen Ever After and Test Track (using the single rider lane). If you can pay extra to ride Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, definitely do it, but if you opt for the free virtual queue you might be waiting up to an hour to ride. Choose wisely: your time is precious on a one-day jaunt.

In the evening, head to Magic Kingdom. There’s nothing quite like Main Street at night, especially during the nightly fireworks spectacular, Happily Ever After. Don’t miss classic rides like Pirates of the Caribbean, Space Mountain, Jungle Cruise and Haunted Mansion, plus the newly rethemed Tiana’s Bayou Adventure which replaced Splash Mountain. If you’re still going when the park closes, here’s a pro tip: as long as you’re in a ride queue when the clock strikes, you can still ride your last ride.

If Big Ticket Rides are the Highest Priority

The progression will be the same—start with Animal Kingdom, end at Magic Kingdom—but this time, you’re going to rope drop Avatar Flight of Passage. Once inside the park, buy Individual Lightning Lanes for the parks’ biggest rides as soon as you scan in. (If you’re staying at a Disney hotel, you can do this as early as 7 a.m., or 9 a.m. for other guests unless you’re already in a park.) These are an additional cost on top of Genie+, but can be purchased without buying the service, too.

Buy an early afternoon Individual Lightning Lane for Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance in Hollywood Studios, and a late afternoon one for Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind in EPCOT. You can only purchase two Individual Lightning Lanes per day, so you’ll have to make some tough choices between these and an evening ride on TRON Lightcycle / Run in Magic Kingdom, Disney’s newest roller coaster. Once you’ve got your biggest rides lined up, grab Genie+ for either the Slinky Dog Dash in Hollywood Studios or Seven Dwarfs Mine Train in Magic Kingdom. Those hugely popular mid-level coasters have consistently long waits. You’ll likely get a return time for much later in the day.

While EPCOT generally opens at 9 a.m., much of the World Showcase doesn’t open until 11 a.m., and the park tends to be quieter in the morning. It’s a good strategy if you’re focused on rides, but since you’ll only have a few hours in the park, you’ll likely miss a lot of delicious food if you opt for EPCOT as your second park. Ride Guardians of the Galaxy and the always-charming Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, one of the park’s newest rides, which is based on Disney’s Ratatouille.

Whether you’ve chosen EPCOT or Hollywood Studios as your second park, take the Skyliner to the other when you’re ready to park hop. The aerial gondola is a new classic when it comes to Disney experiences. At Hollywood Studios, definitely don’t miss the two rides in Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge, and take a trip to another dimension on The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror.

Whichever you choose, opt for Magic Kingdom as your final stop (from EPCOT, take the Monorail, or a shuttle from the others). Not only will you see the quintessential fireworks show at the park, you’ll benefit from lighter crowds and shorter lines. If you’ve nabbed a virtual queue spot for TRON Lightcycle/Run at night, consider yourself lucky, because the lightning-quick coaster is even more thrilling at night.

If You Want the Classic Disney Experience

If we’re being honest, the best way to spend any one single day at Walt Disney World is to spend the whole day at Magic Kingdom. It’s easy to get caught up in trying to see every park and ride every ride, and that can absolutely be a fun adventure, but the essence of Disney is best experienced when you take it slow and really absorb the immersive atmosphere.

For the most classic experience, buy a single day, single park ticket to Magic Kingdom and just give yourself time and space to explore the park at your leisure. (Definitely still buy Genie+, though, because lines can get long.) This way, you can sit down to a character breakfast at Crystal Palace, where Winnie the Pooh and friends come to your table to say hello while you eat, then stroll through Fantasyland, Liberty Square, Frontierland, Adventureland and Tomorrowland at your leisure.

On a relaxing day like this, you’ll have time to visit some of the park’s sometimes-overlooked early attractions, like Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress, which dates back to the 1964 World’s Fair, and the Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover, a slow-moving ride above Tomorrowland which Walt Disney personally oversaw for Disneyland. On it, you’ll see an early model for the Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow, Disney’s first vision for EPCOT, decades before it was built.

Another bonus to focusing on Magic Kingdom is that you can take a break from the park for dinner, and head back at night. The Monorail resort loop goes to Disney’s Contemporary Resort (the Monorail goes right through the building), Disney’s Polynesian Resort, and Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort. Restaurants like Citricos, Narcoosee’s and California Grill are always winners for fine dining—but for a huge splurge, go for Victoria & Albert’s, which just earned Walt Disney World its first Michelin star. Whatever you do, make sure you watch those nighttime fireworks. It’s a part of the experience you don’t want to miss.

Moscow Day Trip

Cool Cruiser

We're extremely interested in a cruise next summer on the Soujourn which stops in St. Petersburg for almost three days. Seabourn lists two different "day trips" to Moscow via high speed train. Having previously cruised to St. Petersburg, we really don't want to stay there for three days and a side trip to Moscow would be the highlight of the cruise. Has anyone taken this excursion?

I have been to Moscow many times, but never as part of a cruise. Was recently on a Baltics cruise and spoke to people who had - it takes it out of them as it was a super long day. In fact they got home so late that third day they slept in and had "sea day" at port.

There is so much to see in Moscow, I it should be a land trip and there are many nice hotels on which you can stay. It is really a 3 day experience. Having said that, if there is not much else you want to see in St Petersburg, and you don't think you will get back to Russia by land, it is a very interesting city with much to do. You will skim the surface, but will enjoy. I would only do if you had limited or no plans in St Petersburg - especially the day after as you return very late at night.

If you do not go, there are many not so well known things to do in SP. The Russian Museum is fascinating for example as is Yuspov Palace. The military museums and sights are interesting as well.

Whatever you decide to do you will have a great time!

Doing a "day-trip" from St. Petersburg to Moscow and back can work well. We did that trip in 2008 with Crystal. Having sailed in the Greek Islands in 2006 with Seabourn on our first cruise, I am sure that the quality would be similar with your cruise line. One change now would be the use of the high-speed train in place of flying back and forth as we did in 2008. Here are more details to consider:

Having three days in St. Petersburg allows enough time to do BOTH in seeing Moscow and going to other places near where your ship is docked. Only a few of the better lines, such as Seabourn and Crystal, have that type of schedule. We used in 2008 the main schedule airline, Rossiya Russian Airlines, for this trip. That line is now part of Aeroflot. The train trip takes long, but lessens some of the added time needed going out to the airport and the train gets you closer to the central part of Moscow.

I'll offer up some added background, along with various pro/con factors for your consideration. My wife thought it was lots of money, but she viewed it as very much worth it after completing the trip as a "once in a lifetime" experience.

CON FACTORS : It's a long day! Leave the ship about 8 am (greeted by a small welcoming band dockside); lots of driving and traffic; get back by return flight to the St. Petersburg airport around midnight and back to the ship a little before 1 am. The cost through Crystal Cruises was not cheap, but it does include everything, including all bus transfers, your jet air flights on regularly schedule commercial airlines, lunch on the bus, dinner in a nice/historic club/restaurant, admissions, etc., etc. Moscow is a super large city of about ten million people. There has been huge growth in the suburbs of this city during the past decades or so. Traffic and time from the airport to the main downtown takes about an hour. You can get a good feel as you travel into town through the coach windows about the “new Moscow” with its suburban growth, commerce, advertising, capitalism, etc.

PRO FACTORS : Moscow has its unique history, sights and sites, from Ivan the Terrible up through Lenin, Stalin and the new Russian leaders of today. After a long ride in from the airport on the outer edge of this large metro areas of 17.3 million (with 10.5 million in the city), we stopped at a new hotel for coffee/tea/break. Then, we rode the Moscow subway and saw a couple of their very unique and artistic stations. Stalin at the time called these stations “People’s Palaces”. This Moscow Metro was first opened in 1935 and now has 182 stations, 12 different lines,187 miles of routes and carries seven million passengers each weekday. It’s the world second busiest subway system. This subway ride offered a good sampling of real life for people who live and work in Moscow. We then saw more key places enroute, including the home of the Bolshoy Ballet, KGB Headquarters, various Stalin era buildings, etc. Then we went to the Kremlin with its 19 historic towers. WOW, we were really there!

Inside the Kremlin are three key “super stars”. First, was the State Armoury with its spectacular Faberge Eggs, plus so many carriages, crowns, gowns, jewels, etc. Second are the various historic Cathedrals within the Kremlin Walls, plus the Tower Bells, Icon art, etc. This includes the Cathedral of the Annunciation built in the 1480’s and having such spectacular wall murals and icons. Third, was the Great Kremlin Palace with its spectacular reception halls, inlaid wood floors, gold and more gold, fancy ceilings, etc. The Czars were crowned here, plus the current heads of the Russian government, etc. You might check whether your cruise trip will take you insider here. The size and scale of these areas are hard to describe in words, let alone reflect and capture the history that has happened in some of these rooms dating back to the late 1400’s. We have seen lots of great palaces all over Europe, but this is something above and beyond for the eyes, heart and brain.

Then, we saw more building inside the walls of the Kremlin. We went outside of the Kremlin Walls and walked next door to adjoining Red Square, seeing St. Basil’s and the re-done Gum Department Store. Red Square is so historic, especially having grown up seeing the military May Day parades there, visuals of Lenin’s Tomb, etc. Have the words “spectacular” and historic been used too much? Maybe, but it fits for many of these unique places. St. Basil’s was built 1555–1561 on the order of Ivan IV (the Terrible). It was the tallest building in Moscow until the completion of the Ivan the Great Bell Tower (266 feet tall) in 1600 inside the Kremlin Walls. To be able to “CONTRAST” and compare Moscow and St. Petersburg during these three short days adds to the benefits of seeing both of these great Russian capital cities. Each is a very different and special city.

We finished with dinner in the Central Writers’ Club, a one hundred years old mansion made into a restaurant with crystal chandeliers, rich wood panelling, fireplaces, and antique balustrades. Finally, we drove back to the airport, passing many of the new suburban commercial development with big box stores and luxury housing, etc.

Is one day too short and limited? YES! You can, however, do and see lots in only that one short day. You get a small sampling above. How often do you get to Russia? The Cold War might not come back in full force, but there are going to be increasing and revisited tensions in future years involving Russia and getting access there. The major cruise lines have done this tour many times and has its details down well and timing perfected. Let me know any questions, thoughts or reactions.

Here are a few picture highlights of what we saw in Moscow. Have more to share, if you would like added views for the great potentials there.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

Walking on the famed Red Square of Moscow:

This is the interior for Moscow's most historic church, Assumption Cathedral or the Cathedral of the Dormition, inside the Kremlin walls. It is the mother church of Muscovite Russia. The church stands on Cathedral Square and was built in 1475–1479 by the Italian architect Aristotele Fioravanti. It was erected on the spot of an older 14th century cathedral of the same name:

The famed KGB Headquarters in Moscow where many entered and did not exit (alive) during the 1950’s and 1960’s:

Kazan Cathedral sits on the northeast corner of Red Square in Moscow. The current building is a reconstruction of the original church which was destroyed at the direction of Joseph Stalin in 1936. The original church was erected as a shrine in the early 1630s to mark the city's liberation from the Polish aggressors. After the Soviet Union’s fall, this was the first church to be completely rebuilt. The cathedral's restoration (1990–1993) was based on the detailed measurements and photographs of the original church:

Here is a small sampling of the Kremlin Royal Treasures of the Czars: Eggs & Jewels:

St. Basil's sits on Red Square and dates back to its 1555-61 construction on the orders of Ivan the Terrible (Ivan IV). It commemorates the capture of Kazan and Astrakhan and marks the geometric center of the city. This location has been the hub of its growth for Moscow since the 14th century. It was the tallest building in Moscow until the completion of the Ivan the Great Bell Tower in 1600. This church was near destroyed in the 1930’s when Stalin was in control.:

We did it with Regent several years ago. We were also docked in St Petersburg for 3 days. We flew to Moscow though. Not sure how long the high speed train takes, but until you get to the airport, through security and your flight leaves it may be the same. It was a great day. I wouldn't have wanted to miss it. We got back about 11 and they had a special dinner waiting for those of us on this excursion. Really did get to see the highlights of Moscow as well as a fabulous lunch.

I did the day trip to Moscow several years ago with Seabourn. Normally, I would never undertake such a grueling day but it was my third time in St. Petersburg and I had seen everything I wanted so I thought why not? It turned out to be a highlight of the trip. Yes, it was a long day but who cares. The day is just as long if you stay on board. Seabourn handled the whole thing extremely well from the flights to the guides to the meals to the private sightseeing. We saw and experienced so much in that one day that I felt I had been there for two or three. Is it better to go and spend a few days? Of course! But if that is not an option and you're not sure if you'll ever get there on your own I think it's a great thing to do.

Everything I said though is only for those who have been to St. Petersburg before. If it's your first time you'll need every minute of those three days there to see even a fraction of what there is to see.

Thaks for all the great information. We will be on the Sojourn late next summer in the Baltic. We have been to St Petersburg and are thinking we might do this if offered. Sounds great, hope we get the chance!

I can't thank you all enough for your quick and in depth responses. As much as I would like to take an extended tour of Moscow/Russia someday, I've learned that you never know what the future holds and not to let a good opportuity pass you by. The overall positive reviews and amazing pictures have sold us. While I realize we might be exhausted from the long day, it sounds well worth it.

Glad we have helped to "SELL YOU". You are summarizing and approaching things correctly. See "IT" while you can and are close. Here are a few more pictures to help you get ready for the amazing sights you will experience there in Moscow.

Like you, we did the Moscow trip after a couple of trips to St Petersburg. Wouldn't have missed it for the world- totally different feel from SP, or anywhere else in the world. For those of us who lived through the cold war, it brought to life the spy novels I have read all my life.

Could you please send more information on your Moscow trips - we would like to do a seperate trip to Moscow after the cruise. Any leads or information would be appreciated.

We were on the Sojourn July/August 2012. We did a private day trip to Moscow using SPB tours via high speed train on our 2nd day in ST P. They picked us up from the ship around 5:30 am and dropped us off at the rail station, and we met our tour guide and a driver for the two of us at the Moscow rail station. It took 4 hours each way for the train, but it went from city center to city center, and it seemed to go by relatively quickly. We had a great time in Moscow- seeing the highlights as described on the tour itinerary, and we could customize it. There seemed to be little English spoken in Moscow, people not as friendly as in St P, and the traffic was horrible. I was actually glad to get back to St P( at around midnight).

It was a busy day, but that didn't stop us from a full day of touring before and after the Moscow trip on private tours by SPB tours. It was quite expensive, but I'm glad we went- and I really have no desire to go back.

Years ago we did a land tour of Russia, so got to spend about 5 days in both Moscow and St Petersburg. I actually like Moscow more than St Petersburg. We have also done a Baltic cruise on Seabourn, so have had another 3 days in St Petersburg, so NEXT time we will certainly do the day tour to Moscow. I would also prefer to do it the way they do now, by train, would have been dubious about a Russian "domestic" flight. ;)

I could've sworn I'd responded to this thread earlier:confused:

I'd take my chances on a domestic flight with their new fancy Boeing planes (or even an odd Ilyushin). The train was a less than stellar experience. Four hours each way in a straight backed non reclining seat. Some of them had another passenger about 24" in front of you, facing you - so no sticking your legs out. Further they didn't seem to believe in AC so the car just got hotter and hotter. Moscow itself was great, I found it particularly amusing that right across from Red Square they had a capitalist pig-dog mall filled with luxury American and European brands.

Following is a description and personal review of the Seabourn Cruise - St. Petersburg -shore excursion: “MOSCOW BY TRAIN & THE MYSTERIOUS KREMLIN”

On June 18, 2012 – my wife and I participated in the Seabourn Pride’s Moscow Excursion along with 12 other passengers and 2 guides. Most of us had room service breakfast at 4:30am, crossed the flooded river outside Russian Customs and met the bus @ 5:30am for a transfer to the St. Petersburg Train Station. The high speed train (mostly at 130-140 MPH) left the station at 6:30am and arrived in Moscow at 10:15am. The train ride was uneventful and a box snack was provided.

In Moscow, we were met by the local guide and a full size bus. We drove into and around central Moscow for about 30 min. – buildings and sights are interesting, but do not compare to the historical & decorative buildings of St. Petersburg. We then took a Metro (subway) ride in Moscow. The metro is interesting, but not as impressive as St. Petersburg’s. (You will notice that throughout this review, I state that St. Petersburg is better than Moscow, which is true of everything except for the Kremlin, which holds its own and should be the main purpose of this excursion.) (Seabourn states that the Kremlin is closed on Thursday – THEREFORE, DO NOT TAKE THIS TOUR ON THURSDAY.)

After driving around Moscow again to view several areas from the bus, we visited the Kremlin , which is a very large wall enclosed fortress with hundreds of buildings, churches, monuments, fortress walls with many towers/etc. After a long walk (many long walks to come) at an OLYMPIC SPEED PACE (You will walk fast to see everything in the allotted time). We started with the “Armory” museum which was very good and I do not normally like museums. There are rooms with royalty gowns, Czars’ crowns, royalty carriages, suits of amour and weapons, jewel covered bibles, Faberge Eggs, etc. – basically Royal Treasures. From here we walked to the “Churches Square” with It’s 17 churches. We entered the Annunciation Cathedral where most all the Czars were crowned. Outside - took pictures of the largest BELL in the world that has never been rung and the largest CANNON that has never been fired. Took pictures of government buildings and the President’s Palace.

At about 1:45pm, we walked back to the bus for a short ride to a very prestigious restaurant (and it was) for a four course late-lunch with an excellent French Bordeaux.

After lunch, we visited the very large Red Square @ 3:15pm for a tour of “St. Basil’s Cathedral” which was beautiful and very interesting with its many Onion Domes – but I liked St. Petersburg’s “Church on the Spilled Blood” better. We were able to see the front of the Lenin’s Tomb , but it was closed. At the other end of the Square was a beautiful museum and very nice smaller church where recorded services were being played.

We had 45 min. on our own to walk around the Square and after another long fast walk back to our bus, we proceeded to the train station for a 7:45pm departure back to St. Petersburg. A snack and drink was provided. Arriving in St. Petersburg at 11:30pm, with the sun just beginning to set (the mid-night sun), we proceeded to the ship – 18 hour tour/ 21 hour day.

Summary: Is the tour worth $1,000 per person – only if it is important to see Moscow once in your lifetime. See St. Petersburg first ; tour has extensive walking at a very fast pace; you will be going to Moscow to see the Kremlin which is historical and beautiful.

DVC Lounges at Disney World and Disneyland

by Jenn Marrazzo | Mar 1, 2024 | Disney Vacation Club , DVC Membership

We’re sharing a comprehensive guide to DVC lounge options at both Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort.

Disney Vacation Club Members receive many perks with their memberships. From exclusive events to discounts and more, a slew of unique experiences are available for DVC guests. One that many people aren’t aware of is access to DVC-exclusive lounges.  That’s right! DVC Members have exclusive DVC lounges where they can kick back, relax, and enjoy some air conditioning in the warmth of the theme parks. These DVC lounges aren’t exclusive to just one park! Lounges are available at Walt Disney World in Florida and are coming soon to the Disneyland Resort in California .

Keep reading for a guide to the Disney Vacation Club Lounges at Walt Disney World and Disneyland. Want to learn more about Disney Vacation Club? Check out some of our past articles about DVC.

  • A Beginner’s Guide to the Disney Vacation Club
  • What You Need to Know Before You Stay at a Disney Vacation Club Resort.
  • What Perks Come With Being a Disney Vacation Club Member?

DVC Member Perks

When you join the Disney Vacation Club, you aren’t just paying for a real estate interest in a resort. You’re also getting access to exclusive discounts, members-only events, and more .  Among these perks are discounts! If you love to enjoy a savory meal or a sweet snack while visiting the parks, with membership proof, guests can take advantage of a discount of about 10 to 20 percent off dining and merchandise at the Walt Disney World Resort, Disneyland, Disney Springs, Downtown Disney, and all theme parks. Sometimes, these discounts are increased and are supplemented by discounts on annual passes, events, and more.

Imagine… shorter wait times, exclusive snacks, treats, characters, and merchandise. It sounds pretty awesome right? Well, another perk guests get to enjoy is being able to attend members-only events. These Moonlight Magic events take place on both coasts and are free for DVC Members. They can even invite up to four additional guests to bask in the magic. Remember, all of these experiences do require you to prove that you are a Disney Vacation Club Member. DVC no longer issues blue cards to guests, and proof of membership is accessible via your phone.

DVC Lounge Options

Want to escape the heat of Florida or California while enjoying a beverage? Well, Disney Vacation Club Members can access member-exclusive lounges. Disneyland wasn’t home to a DVC Lounge, but now they are even getting in on the action.

Disney World DVC Lounge Options

The Walt Disney World Resort in Florida is home to not one but two DVC Lounges around the resort. One is located inside a theme park, and the other is located at one of Disney’s world-class DVC resorts.

Member Lounge at EPCOT

It’s a hot day walking around the World (Showcase), and you could really use a much-needed break. Well, DVC Members can escape the heat at the Member Lounge at EPCOT. Located inside the Imagination Pavilion, it’s accessible through the gift shop, where you exit the Journey into Imagination with Figment attraction.

On the first floor, there is a check-in desk labeled Disney Vacation Club Member Lounge. Here you can speak with a friendly cast member who will let you know if there is a wait or if you can head straight up. You’ll also be required to show proof of your membership at the podium. One tip to remember is that sometimes they do say there is a wait to enter, but you’ll usually be called up fairly quickly, so don’t be discouraged.

You are escorted to a spot with views of Spaceship Earth, where you’ll be offered complimentary soft drinks, water, and snacks. You can go up as many times as you’d like, as there are self-serve machines in the back. The DVC Lounge at EPCOT has been refreshed with photo opportunities and even a kid’s corner with a TV!

Top of the World Lounge – A Villain’s Lair

Everyone knows a great spot to view the Fireworks at Magic Kingdom is the very top of California Grill. But what if we told you that you could have a better spot as a DVC Member? Top of the World Lounge – A Villain’s Lair is at the top of Bay Lake Tower at Disney’s Contemporary Resort. To enjoy the lounge, guests are asked to check in at the desk on Bay Lake Tower’s first floor at Disney’s Contemporary Resort. Again, you’ll be asked to show proof of your membership, which is now on your phone, and then either be guided or escorted up to the lounge on the 16th floor of the building.

This lounge isn’t just a simple lounge. Oh no, there’s magic all around! The villains overtook the closed Top of the World lounge and made it their home for trouble and terror. This lounge differs from the EPCOT one in that this one does not have complimentary food and drink. Instead, Top of the World offers a menu of items to enjoy. The Wicked Wine Down event is open to members for $55 per person, plus tax and service fees, where guests can enjoy cocktails and appetizers, plus some sweets from the day. It also is when guests can use the rooftop terrace for fireworks.

Another event at the Top of the World Lounge – A Villain’s Lair is the Enchantment at the Top Dessert Party for $89 per adult and $49 per child. The Enchantment at the Top Dessert Party features a dessert buffet, adult beverages, lounge access, and fireworks viewing. This event is only available on Friday nights and can be booked up to 60 days in advance.

You can learn more about the Top of the World Lounge – A Villain’s Lair in our Villains Issue of WDW Magazine!

New Member Lounge Announced Coming to Disney World in 2024

A new member lounge has been announced for Walt Disney World coming in 2024. It’s been said that this lounge will be in a theme park, like the EPCOT lounge, offering a spot for members to cool down and unwind. While no more details have been announced, stay tuned to see where this lounge will emerge.

Disneyland DVC Lounge Options

DVC guests who have visited Disneyland before you’ll know that there were no exclusive DVC lounges available. In 2023 the all-new Disney Vacation Club Star View Station – A Member Lounge opened for guests to enjoy.

Star View Station – a Member Lounge

Immerse yourself in the magic of Tomorrowland and take some time to cool off from the sunny California weather that Disneyland experiences at the all-new Star View Station- a Member Lounge. Located on the second floor of the Star Wars: Launch Bay building, Star View Station- a Member Lounge, is the perfect addition to the Tomorrowland section of Disneyland.

Similar to the concept of the Member Lounge at EPCOT, Star View Station- a Member Lounge at Disneyland will offer seating, complimentary soft drinks, an entertainment center for kids, wifi and more. You can take up to five guests in the lounge, but just make sure you have membership proof available at the entrance.

You will check in at the desk downstairs and then head upstairs for the lounge. There are amazing murals and designs that are quite appealing to the eye. You’ll get to enjoy those Coke Freestyle Machines, Coffee Machines, some snacks, and their own bathrooms. There are small touches of Disney history and DVC magic throughout the lounge. Star View Station – a Member Lounge not only has inside seating but also outside! This deck has seating and overlooks Tomorrowland, offering some great views. Plus, it’s a great way to stay in the action of Disneyland without fighting the crowds.

One benefit: it has its own bathroom! The Member Lounge at EPCOT does not have a bathroom, and guests have to go to the one on the opposite side in the Imagination pavilion. This lounge has its own bathroom, which is super convenient for guests.

Most of the DVC lounges allow guests who have both direct and resale contracts. Here are the exceptions:

  • The new DVC lounge coming to WDW has been announced as only available for direct contracts. This means only guests who have purchased a contract directly through Disney with at least 150 Vacation Points can access this all-new lounge.
  • Top of the World Lounge is only accessible to guests with a direct DVC contract, like the new lounge.

Can you bring non-DVC members with you?

Yes, DVC members can bring up to five additional guests with them into the lounges. Only DVC members are granted access to the lounge and guests must be accompanied by the members.

Can you make a reservation for a DVC lounge?

No, unfortunately, they are first-come, first-serve. If they are at capacity when you get there, you’ll be asked to add your name to a waitlist and they usually text when your spot is available. These lists typically move fast, so don’t despair!

Do the DVC Lounges have hours?

Yes! All of the lounges at both Walt Disney World in Florida and Disneyland in California do have hours.

  • Member Lounge at EPCOT is open every day from 11 AM to 6 PM
  • Top of the World- A Villain’s Lair is open daily from 6 PM to 12 AM
  • Star View Station- a Member Lounge is open daily from 11 AM to 6 PM

Are there refreshments at the Lounges?

At both the Member Lounge at EPCOT in WDW and Star View Station – a Member Lounge at Disneyland, guests can enjoy access to Coke Freestyle machines for soft drinks and water, snacks, and more. At the Top of the World – A Villain’s Lair lounge at Bay Lake Tower at WDW, guests can pay for both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages and snacks.

REVIEW: We Tried ALL THE THINGS at Disney’s NEW Private Beach Club

fireworks cruise wdw

We’ve been following along with all the updates regarding Disney’s new private island,  Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point , which is officially opening soon!

fireworks cruise wdw

And, now that we’re lucky enough to officially be here, we’re bringing you along as we eat everything at this new private island destination!

Come with us as we check out what you’ll find to eat on Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point!

Located on the Bahamian island of Eleuthera, Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point is the latest exclusive destination available only to Disney Cruise passengers on certain Disney Cruise Line itineraries.

fireworks cruise wdw

The new destination sees Disney fully embrace the Bahamian location, and the customs and traditions of those who live there. Our reporters on the ground found the location to be gorgeous, with super white sand,  “turquoise-y” waters, and rocky outcroppings into the ocean. They also felt the Bahamian elements give it a lot of character, and enjoyed watching the Junkanoo parade.

fireworks cruise wdw

Food & Drinks

As you might have guessed, there are several food and drink locations scattered across Lookout Cay. Our team sampled several of them, and had some thoughts on food, drink, and overall service.

fireworks cruise wdw

While the island has a selection of bars and drink establishments, one of our team members felt it suffered in comparison to Disney Cruise Line’s other private destination, Castaway Cay.

Bow & Ribbon Bar at Lookout Cay

She offered the option that while Lookout Cay had “a lot of bars”  they were all “exactly the same. Literal same menu, same building layout, same pathway to the beach on every. Single. Bar. So you cant really find the “good” spot. But at least you can find where you want to hang and then you know you’ll have the bar and food options. I just felt like there wasn’t anywhere in the cay where I was like ‘THIS is where I’d be if I wasn’t working’ and I can think of a few spots on Castaway Cay.”

fireworks cruise wdw

Our team was able to split up and eat at both of Lookout Cay’s main eating establishments: Serenity Bay BBQ and True True Too BBQ.

fireworks cruise wdw

They noted that True True had fewer options than the adults-only Serenity Bay, but that both were in high demand. Our reporters at Serenity Bay waited over 10 minutes for a table, while our team at True True eventually had to share one with another party.

fireworks cruise wdw

Food-wise, the meals were bit of a mixed bag. According to our team, the chicken was moist and well seasoned but nothing unique, and the Mac tasted like Stoffers. However, they praised the pineapple black bean salad with sweet pineapple and avocado and peppers as “exactly what you want to eat on a hot beach day.”

fireworks cruise wdw

Beyond the food quality, our team did notice some operational issues. Notably, flies were a constant presence at both of the eating areas. In addition, there seemed to be some operational and logistic issues, such as most food being buffet but certain items requiring cast members to serve them, leading to confusion.

fireworks cruise wdw

Overall, our feeling was that as cast members become more acclimated to the area – – our day there was also the first time many of them were seeing the island – -things would run much smoother.

fireworks cruise wdw

Should You Go?

Our team’s general consensus was that they enjoyed their time at Lookout Cay, and it was definitely fun to visit, but perhaps not worth a trip on its own. As one of our team members put it, “I don’t know if the destination itself warrants planning a trip around it.” But, at the same time, if you are a frequent cruiser, you’ll want to go to Lookout Cay just to experience something different!

Thinking of booking a cruise? Here are the lines you should — and shouldn't — sail with.

  • Before you book a cruise , it's important to understand that not all cruise lines are equal.
  • Each cruise line has amenities, entertainment, and experiences tailored to specific cruisers.
  • Carnival is good for families, Virgin Voyages for solo adults, and Cunard for mature travelers.

Insider Today

I am a very, very avid cruiser. Last year alone, I spent 73 days on cruise ships .

I've sailed with most major lines, from kid-focused Disney Cruise Line to the sometimes-naughty Virgin Voyages. When people ask me which cruise ships I recommend , my answer isn't so straightforward.

Each cruise line is unique, offering amenities, entertainment, and experiences tailored to specific cruisers. What you book will depend on your needs, wants, budget, and what you'd rather avoid.

So, I've done some research about popular cruise lines and combined my personal experiences to help you decide which cruise line to book with.

After all, this is kind of the year of the cruise , with travelers predicted to set sail at some of the highest rates in years throughout 2024.

Here's what you need to know about some of the major cruise lines before you book your next trip.

Editor's Note: Price ranges were calculated at the time of publication based on available listings on each cruise site. Cruise pricing is per person, based on double occupancy and the cheapest stateroom/fare available. Prices were calculated before taxes, port charges, and other fees. Itineraries with added tours built-in were not included when calculating this information.

Carnival Cruise Line

fireworks cruise wdw

Cost: $ | Prices range from $156/pp for a two-day getaway from Sydney to $3,273/pp for a 10-day Alaska cruise

Ideal for: Budget travelers, intergenerational groups, families, and partiers

Skip if: You're looking for a high-class, elegant experience or a quiet, laid-back vibe

Highlight: All Carnival cruises come with itineraries loaded with fun activities. Some ships have especially exciting features like the first roller coaster at sea, SkyRide zip-line-style aerial bikes, and themed parties.

Possible cons: This is not a cruise line for those who like to wear a tux or ball gown or have a quiet cruise experience.

Launched in 1972, Carnival Cruise Line is one of nine cruise lines owned by parent company Carnival Corporation & plc. It's the company's largest cruise line, with 27 ships. Its cruises typically range from two days to 29 days.

Carnival Cruise Line offers year-round cruises in Australia, The Bahamas, the Caribbean, and Mexico and seasonal cruises in Alaska , Bermuda, Canada, Europe, Hawaii, and New England.

Celebrity Cruises

fireworks cruise wdw

Cost: $$ | Prices range from $233/pp for a three-night Key West & Bahamas cruise to $6,912/pp for a 7-night Galapagos cruise

Ideal for: Couples, families, and solo travelers

Skip if: You're looking for a slower-paced classic cruise

Highlight: All Celebrity Cruises come with amazing outdoor spaces like The Lawn Club with real grass on the top deck of Solstice Series ships and the Rooftop Terrace on Millennium Series ships. You also won't want to miss the Magic Carpet , which allows guests to hang out while suspended above the ocean on some ships.

Possible cons: This is not a cruise line for those who want to attend lectures about their ports of call.

Celebrity Cruises began sailing in 1997. There are 16 ships, which sail on itineraries ranging from three to 19 nights to nearly 300 ports of call in 70 countries.

fireworks cruise wdw

Cost: $$$ | Prices range from $249/pp for a two-night cruise from Southampton, England to Hamburg, Germany, to $19,158/pp for a 111-night World Voyage

Ideal for: Sophisticated travelers and mature cruisers

Skip if: You're looking for a high-energy cruise, hoping to travel with children , or craving adventurous activities

Highlight: All Cunard cruises come with white-glove service. You won't want to miss Cunard's famous 3:30 p.m. afternoon tea, gala evenings, and fine dining arranged by stateroom grade.

Possible cons: This is a very formal cruise with strict dress codes. You won't find water slides or pool parties here.

Founded in 1840, Cunard offers a classic cruise experience with cruises ranging from two to 116 nights.

Its four ships sail to Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, and South America.

Disney Cruise Line

fireworks cruise wdw

Cost: $$$ | Prices range from $422.40/pp for a two-night cruise from Sydney to Brisbane, Australia, to $5,592/pp for a 12-night Mediterranean with Greek Isles cruise

Ideal for: Disney adults , families, and intergenerational groups

Skip if: You don't want to vacation around a bunch of children and you crave peace and quiet

Highlight: All Disney Cruise Line cruises come with heaps of Disney magic in the way of special events and details. You won't want to miss character meet and greets, pirate-themed parties with fireworks, and passengers trading pins and leaving treats inside decorative pouches hung on stateroom doors.

Possible cons: There is a significant child population on most of these cruises and not much adults-only entertainment. Dinners in the main dining can get loud, and, just like at the theme parks, there can be many queues for activities and other offerings.

Disney Cruise Line first set sail in the 1990s and has five active ships, with the new Disney Treasure set to debut in December. The line has sailings all around the globe, and most range from two to 15 nights.

Holland America Line

fireworks cruise wdw

Cost: $$ | Prices range from $94/pp for a one-day Pacific Northwest cruise to a $27,399/pp for a 132-day Grand Voyage

Ideal for: Music lovers and sophisticated world travelers who appreciate European hospitality and smaller ships

Skip if: You're young, traveling with children, or want to party

Highlight: All Holland America Line cruises come with a dose of Dutch hospitality and elegance. During my cruise with the line, I enjoyed the Dutch cuisine and Music Walk , which features live performances at B.B. King's Blues Club, Rolling Stone Rock Room, and Billboard Onboard.

Possible cons: The line takes its formal nights really seriously and attracts an older crowd.

Holland America Line has had ships sailing the globe for over 140 years. Its 11 ships cruise to more than 425 ports of call on seven continents, and cruises range from one to 118 days.

MSC Cruises

fireworks cruise wdw

Cost: $ | Prices range from $80/pp for a three-night Mediterranean cruise to $46,149/pp for a 116-night World Cruise

Ideal for: Budget travelers, families, intergenerational groups, big groups

Skip if: You're looking for lots of food options or top-tier entertainment

Highlight: All MSC Cruises offer great value — and good pizza

Possible cons: The cruise fare does not include many dining options, and the evening entertainment skews old-school and a bit more basic than some other cruise lines that do Broadway-worthy shows.

MSC Cruises has 22 ships, with one more projected to join its fleet by 2025. The line has sailings all around the globe, and most range from two to 118 nights.

Norwegian Cruise Line

fireworks cruise wdw

Cost: $$ | Prices range from $79/pp for a one-day Australia cruise to $4,379/pp for a 10-day European cruise

Ideal for: Couples, families, and solo cruisers

Skip if: You're looking for structure, ballroom dancing, and fancy dinners

Highlight: All Norwegian Cruise Line cruises offer freestyle dining. You won't want to miss its Broadway-level shows and generous drink package, which is often offered complimentary.

Possible cons: This is not a cruise line for those who like formal dress codes, and some dislike the à la carte pricing.

Norwegian Cruise Line has been sailing the world for over 57 years. Its 19 ships visit 400-plus ports on seven continents, and cruises typically last one to 25 days.

Princess Cruises

fireworks cruise wdw

Cost: $$ | Prices range from $127/pp for a two-day Australia Seacation to $24,098/pp for a 98-day World Cruise

Ideal for: Mature solo travelers, couples, and retirees

Skip if: You're looking for lots of activities and party vibes. Princess Cruises tend to attract an older crowd, and the shows and activities reflect this. There aren't many events offered each day. On the three cruises I sailed with Princess, the entertainment was primarily musicals, piano players, and singers backed by an orchestra. There were only a handful of children on each cruise.

Highlight: All Princess Cruises offer Discovery and Animal Planet-exclusive shore excursions — and many have an excellent onboard lecture series.

Possible cons: This is not a cruise line for those who like to party, love water slides, or have teenagers.

Founded in 1965, Princess Cruises has 16 ships that sail to 330 destinations worldwide on itineraries from three to 111 days

Royal Caribbean

fireworks cruise wdw

Cost: $$ | Prices range from $196/pp for a two-night Hong Kong cruise to $8,266/pp for a 13-night Arctic Circle cruise

Ideal for: Couples, families, and intergenerational travelers

Highlight: All Royal Caribbean cruises come with fun activities and a broad range of entertainment options. Some have the Ultimate Abyss , the tallest slide at sea, or the glass capsule North Star , the tallest viewing deck on a cruise ship. You won't want to miss the Oasis Class ships' seven distinctly themed neighborhoods and Royal Promenade, a mall-like thoroughfare with shops, restaurants, and lounges that runs the length of the ship.

Possible cons: Many of its ships are mega-ships, so this isn't the line for you if you want a more intimate trip.

Founded in 1968, Royal Caribbean sails to about 240 destinations on six continents. Cruises range from two to 22 nights.

Royal Caribbean has many of the world's largest cruise ships in its fleet of more than 20 vessels.

Virgin Voyages

fireworks cruise wdw

Cost: $$ | Prices range from $415/pp for a four-night roundtrip cruise from England to Amsterdam to a $3,072/pp for a 13-night Canada, Carolina, and Miami cruise

Ideal for: Child-free travelers, health enthusiasts, the glamorous, and those who don't like strict rules

Skip if: You want a classic cruise, need structure, or can't handle playfulness (and, sometimes, naughtiness)

Highlight: All Virgin Voyages are child-free, and everyone gets unlimited WiFi, access to group fitness classes, and gratuities included in their fare. You won't want to miss its famous Scarlet Night, 20 eateries (every venue is considered specialty dining), and eclectic shows like "Untitled DanceShowPartyThing."

Possible cons: There aren't traditional song-and-dance shows, assigned dining times, and nightly portrait photography

Virgin Voyages has been sailing its "Lady Ships" inspired by superyachts since 2021. Three nearly identical ships are currently in service, and a fourth one is set to set sail later this year.

Virgin Voyages sails to about 100 destinations in Australia, Europe, the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, and the United Kingdom on cruises ranging from three to 16 nights.

Russian River Cruise – Waterways of the Tsars

Updated December 14, 2017

// By Margherita

Back to Russia! Did you follow our Russian river cruise in August and September? We travelled between Moscow and St Petersburg on the Waterways of the Tsars Viking River Cruise – here’s what we got up to!

russian river cruise viking ship

We both share a deep connection with Russia. I was named after the heroine of Master and Margarita , one of the best Russian books of the 20th century. Nick is actually of Russian ancestry – his maternal great-grandparents were from St Petersburg, and spent the best part of 50 years wandering around Europe escaping wars and revolutions, before settling in Australia .

russia volga river church

Russia has been at the top of our travel dreams for several years , but somehow something always came up whenever we made plans to visit. Once we couldn’t get a visa on time. Another time we couldn’t get time off. Winter is too cold, summer is too hot.

st petersburg hermitage square high

This year, Russia was one of our travel resolutions . Our desire was for the trip to be special – something different from what we’d done so far. We wanted a higher level of comfort, help with visa arrangements, and a trip that would help us understand the country we longed to visit for so many years . The Waterways of the Tsars river cruise with Viking ticked all boxes, so we made arrangements for a departure from Moscow in late August.

Things to Know Before a Russian River Cruise with Viking

When we announced our friends we would be travelling on a Russian river cruise , some of them were really surprised. A CRUISE? You guys are such hardcore independent travellers! What are you doing ON A CRUISE with all those OLD PEOPLE? True, the average age on a Viking river cruise might be a fair bit higher than 35 – but really, who is to say we wouldn’t enjoy the experience?

russian night viking river cruises

This awesome post by One Modern Couple  really nails the point – a Viking river cruise is an experience that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. In their words ‘River cruises are cultural, experiential, educational and scenic. Enjoy the ride, take in the surroundings, learn about the countries you are visiting – from history to local life, food to language – and experience the destinations in a thoughtful way.’

Whether you’re 30, 60 or 90, it doesn’t really matter.

russian river cruise sunset

Secondly,  who’s to say that travelling in a group is not ‘real’ travel? We have always been (and continue to be) lovers of independent travel, but sometimes you just can’t beat the insights given to you by a local guide . Viking River Cruises offer plenty of guided tours included in the cruise price, all led by experienced local guides.

russia river cruise out of moscow

Meals were always excellent – breakfast and lunch included a combination of buffet and à la carte specialties, while dinner was always à la carte. Every day we were given the choice to sample some Russian specialties, like beef stroganoff, borsch, pelmeni, solyanka and lots of delicious desserts.

russian night menu viking river cruise

Another great plus of a Russian river cruise with Viking is that during sailing time lots of cultural activities are on offer – things like cooking demonstrations, Russian language lessons and lectures about Russian history and culture, led by the local tour escorts who were with us for the whole duration of the trip. On top of that, every day we received a briefing detailing the following day’s activities, optional excursions and that night’s menu.

russia mandrogy crazy clouds

Whenever we passed points of interest on the boat, such as Mother Volga statue or the sunken Kalyazin Cathedral, we were always called out on the loudspeaker to make sure we wouldn’t miss them. There was no pressure to join in any of the activities – we could spend the whole day chilling on the deck or on our veranda, looking at the beautiful colourful churches built on the riverbank, surrounded by nothing but nature.

Waterways of the Tsars – the Itinerary

The Waterways of the Tsars cruise is 13 days long, starting either in Moscow or in St. Petersburg . Most Russian river cruises had always been described to me as ‘Volga Cruises’ – in fact, our boat cruised along a variety of waterways, including the Moscow Canal, the Volga-Baltic Waterway, the Rybinsk Reservoir, Lake Onega and Ladoga (the two largest lakes in Europe) and the Neva River (the shortest in Europe!)

Here’s a map to give you an idea of the route.

viking-waterways-czars-map

Days 1-4 Moscow

Three days were barely enough to get an idea of how amazing Moscow is. Our days were packed from morning to night with tours and activities – from visiting Moscow must visits like Red Square, the Kremlin, the Moscow Metro and the Arbat, to quirky locations like the Museum of Cosmonautics , located in one of Moscow’s best districts for Communist architecture (one of our passions!)

st-basil-close-moscow

Even though our itinerary was packed full, we managed to spend half a day touring Moscow independently , visiting some of the sights mentioned in The Master and Margarita – Patriarch’s Ponds, both Bulgakov Museums and Sparrow Hill. Let’s just say that we need to get back to Moscow soon to explore more! Meanwhile, here’s our things to do in Moscow for first timers article, detailing our Moscow visit with Viking.

moscow metro revolutsia

Day 5 Uglich

After setting sail from Moscow, our first stop was Uglich , a cute town on the Volga River, famous for its pretty churches and for being the location of one of the darkest chapters in Russian history .

russia cruise uglich

After the death of Ivan the Terrible, his youngest son and heir to the throne Dmitry was exiled to Uglich, where he was murdered at the age of 10. Suspicion fell on the tsar’s chief advisor, but Dmitry’s cause of death (i.e. throat slitting) was ruled to be an accident. This episode started a period of political unsettlement, that ended with the start of the Romanov dynasty.

We spent an afternoon around Uglich , starting with a home visit of a local family where we had the chance to try homemade grain vodka (the best we’ve had in Russia) and a variety of pickled vegetables, tea and cakes. Then, we toured the Kremlin – the word ‘kremlin’ actually means fortified city, and several Russian cities have one. Moscow’s Kremlin just happens to be the best known!

russia cruise uglich kremlin

Day 6 Yaroslavl

The following morning we reached Yaroslavl , a much larger city compared to Uglich. It looked like the perfect Russian city – large enough not to get bored (there was even a cat cafe!) but small enough not to get frustrated with the traffic and crowds found in Moscow or St. Petersburg.

russia market yaroslavl

Our Yaroslavl visit was centred around four points of interest . The centre of Yaroslavl is located on the Strelka, a promontory formed at the confluence of the Volga and Kotorosl rivers. Our first stop was the covered market , where we tasted some local products, and then we headed to the Church of Elijah the Prophet , where we had a guided tour (and played with some cute cats). Afterwards, we visited the Governor’s Mansion , now an art gallery. We were welcomed by some beautiful ladies in period costumes, and treated to a music concert. Our final stop was the Yaroslavl Kremlin , where we admired the façade of the Dormition Cathedral, destroyed by the Bolsheviks and rebuilt and reopened in 2010 in time for Yaroslavl’s millennium celebrations.

yaroslavl governor mansion

Before heading back to the ship, we stopped at the lookout over the Millennium of Yaroslavl Park at the end of the Strelka – the flowerbed right in the centre displays a bear (Yaroslavl’s coat of arms) and the city’s age – 1006 at the time of our visit. Looking good!

yaroslavl millennuim park

Day 7 Kuzino

Kuzino is a small village in in the middle of nowhere – we visited on a chilly and rainy morning, to visit the stunning Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery , the largest in Europe. The Monastery is surrounded by walls and located on the shores of Severskoye Lake, with waters so pure that boat traffic is prohibited.

Kirillo-Belozersky was founded at the end of the 14th century, and had its heyday between the 15th and 17th century, when Russia’s tsars and noblemen (including Ivan the Terrible!) paid frequent visits and showered the monks with icons and precious gifts. Luckily the Bolsheviks spared the monastery from destruction, turning it into a museum instead. The day we visited was the feast of the Assumption and the churches were crowded with locals, but we had a lovely guided tour of the museum and time to appreciate its beautiful icons.

Day 8 Kizhi (Sailing)

Whenever travelling, you always need a plan B. Autumn was well on its way by the time we reached the northernmost section of our cruise, and we were held at a lock for the best part of one night due to thick fog . This meant we had to sail the whole day and miss out on Kizhi , a tiny island on the northern side of Onega Lake, famous for its spectacular wooden churches.

kizhi

We were all disappointed when boat staff made the announcement – personally, Kizhi was one of the stops I was looking forward to the most, after reading about it on the Guardian and knowing that the site is very difficult to visit without a river cruise. However, we didn’t mind too much because we were both suffering the consequences of the previous night’s vodka tasting , organised by Frank, the hotel manager who also happened to be a real vodka connoisseur!

Viking staff were really amazing at keeping us busy during the sailing day with activities like guided tours to the wheelhouse, the room where the captain and sailors pilot the ship.

Day 9 Mandrogy

The last stop before reaching St. Petersburg was Mandrogy , a village on the banks of the Svir River, built in 1996 as a replica of a village destroyed during WW2. A Russian businessman had the idea of ‘rebuilding’ Mandrogy to provide a stop to river cruise passengers before reaching St. Petersburg. So, the village is not actually ‘real’ – it’s more of an open air museum. Cute little painted houses were built around a little forest, with people in traditional dress showcasing traditional crafts and selling souvenirs.

russia mandrogy

Those in search of souvenirs loved Mandrogy – the quality of matrioshka dolls, icons and other handicrafts was far higher than anywhere else we had been. We are not into souvenirs, but if there was a place to get something, Mandrogy would be it. The village was pretty, but it felt a bit fake for us – kind of like a tourist amusement park. Which in a way, it is.

However, we did enjoy Mandrogy for two reasons – the first was the chance to attend matrioshka painting workshop  where we decorated our own matrioshka dolls. That’s the best kind of souvenir in my opinion! The second was the delicious piroshki place where we had some delicious buttery pastries filled with green onion and egg. Just ask Viking staff and they’ll point you the way to the piroshki place!

Days 10-13 St. Petersburg

After 6 days spent cruising, covering a distance of 1800 kilometers, we made it to Saint Petersburg . We had three gorgeous sunny days, and the city dazzled us with its beauty and artistic wealth – after all, it’s UNESCO-listed ! There’s no way I can convey everything we saw and did in three days in just a couple of paragraphs, so watch this space – a St. Petersburg article is coming soon!

st petersburg hermitage square

There are several St. Petersburg experiences already included by Viking in the tour price – a visit to the Hermitage Museum, a ballet performance, a visit to Catherine Palace in the village of Pushkin and a St. Petersburg city tour, either on foot or by bus. On top of that, we also joined some optional tours – a river cruise, a morning tour to amazing Peterhof Palace and my very own favourite, a Cossack performance!

Things to Know Before Travelling to Russia

  • Make sure you sort out your Russian Visa on time . Viking Cruises helps with an invitation letter that you can use to apply for your own Russian visa at your closest consulate – the process is pretty straightforward, provided you are applying in your own country, and takes approximately 2-3 weeks.
  • You can also ask Viking to sort out your Russian visa for an additional charge . This is especially convenient if you live in the US or if your hometown doesn’t have a Russian consulate.
  • River cruises of Russia only run between April and October, when the waterways are not frozen. The weather can be change dramatically between Moscow and Saint Petersburg , the latter usually being much colder than the former. Make sure you check the weather reports before packing!
  • English isn’t widely spoken around Russia , not even in the main cities. If you’re planning to spend some time travelling independently, learning a bit of Russian is a VERY good idea. The Russian language classes we had on board came in very handy!
  • Russia’s currency is the rouble , which fluctuates quite a bit. Larger cities are full of moneychangers, and some souvenir shops (like those in Mandrogy) also accept euro and USD.
