Entertainment

The seats were very uncomfortable. I along with maybe 4 other passengers were never given our breakfast meal. The attendant completely forgot about us. For such a long flight the seats should be made with more comfort in mind. Just because it is economy doesn’t mean we don’t deserve comfort.

Where are the most popular flight destinations in Europe?

According to our users, the most popular flight destination in europe is united kingdom, followed by spain, italy, france and germany..

In terms of land area, Europe may be the second-smallest continent but the 50 or so European countries offer an extraordinary diversity, from Russia in the north to Greece in the south, west to the Azores and east to the border of Asia.

The countries of Western Europe are prosperous and stable and first in mind for family holidays, while some of the Central and Eastern European states are luring budget-minded travelers keen to enjoy the sun outside the pricey Eurozone.

Travelers visiting Europe have a wealth of holiday itineraries from which to choose: touring Ireland’s Burren limestone plateau, seeing the Northern Lights in Sweden or Norway and exploring the French villages in Provence, skiing in the Swiss Alps or relaxing on a beach in the Greek islands.

Europe’s jewel-like capitals have a captivating charm, with unique cultural, architectural and historic characters and sites. Romantic Paris is renowned as the beautiful City of Lights; stately Vienna was the center of the Habsburg Empire for more than 600 years; stunning spire-dotted Prague is a gem of art and architecture, while medieval Krakow was once Poland’s capital and seat of kings.

Getting to and around Europe

You can get the Airport Express directly from the airport, although it only makes 3 stops before returning the airport. Due to this you’ll have to jump on the metro to get to your final destination in Madrid, so if you’re carrying lots of baggage this can be quite tiresome and inconvenient. Another option is to get a taxi directly from the airport, although this can be quite costly. If there are a few of you to split the fare though, a taxi can be an ideal transport option. Perhaps the easiest way is to jump on the metro from T1 or T4 and go straight to the center of the city. The metro runs regularly and is an effective way to travel.

The easiest and one of the quickest ways to get to the center of Paris is to jump on the metro directly from the airport. A slightly cheaper option, although not as quick, is to get a bus. There is a regular bus service that operates from the airport and you can find times and destinations at the airport. Lastly you can opt for a taxi, although taxis in France are quite expensive. This is a quick way to get to your hotel so if you’re travelling with friends it can be a great option.

From Frankfurt airport you can get trains to any major city in Germany, as well as to the center of Frankfurt. You might also get a free shuttle transfer from your hotel, so once you’ve booked your flights to Europe, browse accommodation and see if you can find a hotel that offers this service as it makes getting to the city easy and cheap. If you want you can also get a taxi, it’ll take around 20-30 minutes depending on traffic but will cost more than the train. The cheapest option is to get one of the many buses that operate to and from the airport, you can find more information out regarding times and specific locations once you’ve arrived in the airport.

Europe is very well connected by planes, trains and buses. There are regular flights between major cities, especially from busy airport hubs in the UK, Germany or France, where low-cost airlines offer cheap flights around Europe.

Trains run throughout mainland Europe, with the Eurotunnel connecting the UK to France.

Buses (coaches) are a cheaper alternative, however, they are typically much slower and often less comfortable than trains.

If you’re driving, consider renting a diesel car, which often gets better mileage. They can be a good deal in countries that subsidize diesel. The UK and Ireland operate left-hand traffic but in the rest of Europe they drive on the right.

If you’re traveling independently, it is still worth checking out tours (such as a one-day city or 14-day country tours) that can be combined with your itinerary.

Tips for your stay in Europe

  • Take only what you need so you can travel as light as possible. You’re going to have your luggage with you more than you think, and carrying around heavy bags all day doesn’t make for a fun vacation.
  • Visiting in the off-season, which is anytime besides the summer months, is a great way to see more and avoid crowds. You can also meet more locals this way, since many Europeans vacation elsewhere in the summer.
  • Spend at least five days in each city you visit instead of trying to cram several places in one trip. You get to know the neighborhood better this way and have a more fulfilling experience

What’s the weather like in Europe?

Mediterranean summers are hot and winters mild. In central and northern Italy and France, the climate is more temperate with humid summers and cold, damp winters. Spain and Portugal can be very hot and dry in summer, with cold and wet winters. Winter in Madrid and Spain’s high central region can be quite cold. Central Europe has a temperate climate with four distinct seasons. Summers are hot to warm and winters cold with temperatures below freezing. Snow can fall as early as mid-September in the Alps, and the ski resorts start opening in November and remain open until April. A continuation of the Gulf Stream (North Atlantic Drift) keeps the climate in Scandinavia, the UK, Ireland, and Iceland fairly mild. Iceland’s climate is close to that of New York, and Scandinavia is more like New England or the Great Lakes region in the U.S. In the UK winters are cold and wet with occasional snow, and summers generally warm with showers. Most Europeans are on vacation in August. Some shops and attractions are closed in the cities, and the beaches and mountains are mobbed. Check your favorite travel website for tips on peak and off seasons.

When is the best time to fly to Europe?

Peak Season: The peak season in Europe depends entirely on where you are going. You’ll find flights to Europe more expensive during the summer and school holidays, and generally from May until September is the peak months. However Southern Spain and parts of Greece have very pleasant weather during the winter too, so it all varies because of how big Europe is. You’ll want to secure your flight tickets early though to make savings on your flights to Europe, especially if you are visiting during a festival or half-term holiday. Off Season: Again this varies tremendously depending on where your flights to Europe are taking you. Countries such as Bulgaria and other Eastern European countries suffer from extremely low temperatures and lots of snowfall, however they have great ski and Winter sports activities on. Most popular destinations such as Spain, France and Germany are in the quietest period during the winter, so you’ll find cheap flights to Europe then, as well as good deals on your accommodation too. The cost of flight tickets also vary drastically depending on your country of choice so research several countries and find one that suits you before booking your flights to Europe.

Which airlines fly to Europe?

The major U.S. carriers that offer direct flights to Europe are American Airlines, Delta and United. If you have an international departure point, take a look at flights with Brussels Airlines or Air Berlin.

What should you pack for a flight to Europe?

European fashion tends to be a touch more formal than American fashion, so nice jeans and long-sleeve shirts are good choices for everyday wear. Bring comfortable shoes, as you’re going to do a lot of walking and Europe is known for cobblestone streets. The season and your destination play a large role in what you pack. You’re fine with only lighter clothes on a summer getaway in Madrid, whereas a winter trip to Berlin calls for heavier layers to stay warm.

What are some things to do in Europe?

If you find yourself in Rome, head north of the city center to experience Vatican City. Even those who aren’t religious appreciate the beauty of St. Peter’s Basilica and the art collections in the Vatican Museums. Those museums house works of some of the most famous Renaissance artists, including Michelangelo’s masterpiece, the Sistine Chapel. There’s so much to see here and it’s such a popular area that you should visit in the morning so you have plenty of time to take it all in. In the Wiltshire area of England about 2 hours outside of London is Stonehenge, considered one of the seven wonders of the Medieval world. The ring of massive stones is much more impressive in person than in pictures, and you can learn about it in the nearby visitor center or on a tour. To get as close to the stones as possible you need to book special access tickets. Keep in mind that these are very popular and require you to book well in advance. Even without special access, you can still get close enough for some great photos. After walking miles every day seeing the sights, there’s no better way to relax than dipping your toes into the white sand of one of Spain’s gorgeous beaches. To get away from it all, reserve a camping space on the Illas Cies, a group of three islands near Galicia. You get there by catching a ferry from Vigo. If you’d prefer something closer to the city, La Concha Beach is an exciting option right by San Sebastian.

For example, many will book flights to Europe and then travel by train; for example, from Calais, France through the “Chunnel” to Dover, England. Other times it may be more convenient to find cheap flights to Europe arriving in one country and then riding a bus into another, such as from Geneva, Switzerland to Chamonix, France. Flying to Europe can also include European flights deals within countries, such as from Stockholm to Helsingborg. In this scenario, you may be surprised at how affordable European airfare can be.

Then again, a flight from New York City to Brussels, Belgium, may take around 7h 15m, including a layover in Amsterdam, Holland. Chicago is a major departure point from the United States, with cheap flights to Europe departing from O’Hare International Airport and arriving in Berlin about 11h 30m later (including a layover in London). In general, it is best to compare flights to Europe at different times to make up for the time difference between continents. Top 5 airlines flying to Europe

All was good but they should bring back seat pockets. It’s difficult trying to travel with small children and keep having to get stuff out of flight bag and then have nowhere to put it!

No hot drinks but otherwise a good flight with decent leg room

The boarding at both ends good, the seats were a tad hard for any long flight, but okay for short haul, 2A and 2B had good leg room. On the return flight we landed at terminal 2 as opposed to where we should have land at terminal 1, so we had a bit of a wait for a bus, which delayed the onward journey. But all in all a good flight.

The flight was okay, seats slightly more comfortable than Easy jet, but wouldn’t want to fly much more than 3.5 hours in those seats, hard and uncomfortable for further journeys. Boarding was okay, never eat or drink on Eco airlines, food not good and expensive for what you get. But it is what it is, and for the price one can not really complain.

Excellent outbound flight to Arrecife on a new very clean Airbus with great flight crew. Flight was only delayed around 10-15 mins and boarding was very good. Comms from pilots and crew was very welcoming and excellent throughout flight.

Flight was ok with a great landing. What could have been better would have been sitting away from the lady behind me who was coughing and sneezing all through the flight. I have been ill with a very bad cold ever since and can only put it down to being sat in front of that lady!

I liked boarding the crew were excellent but the seats are too close together for such a long flight.

The seats could be better as they’re not very comfortable and the arms would be better padded. Only place we found to fill our water bottles was at the Castle Rock bar who had one small sticker on one pillar saying they would refill your bottles with tap water for free! Need some/more refill stations around the departure area.

Boarding went well, seats could have been a little more comfortable

Great flight from malta airport, all on time & no delays, Birmingham Airport a little confusing with the ongoing upgrades!

Be sure to check bags for 23 kg,.(50 lbs) Coming from US I chose the wrong size luggage weight when I checked in on my phone, and had to pay more when I dropped it off

The on board air steward really made the journey. He was very entertaining

I was disappointed there was a 40 minute delay to flight

The trip itself was good. I have given only good as rating, because my first flight has been cancelled by a different airline and that caused disruption in my trip. I spent over ten hours in Luton airport and that caused me high tiredness, sickness, because of the very early initial trip. easyJet staff has been professional and friendly.

Very pleasant crew, working hard on a full plane. Delay by a broken seat. However crew made back 60% of the delay.

Delayed and then further delayed with no announcement made so that all the passengers (who were standing in the jetty) could hear. We stood there for well over 20 minutes. We were further delayed through weather but no one explained that to us until the pilot made an announcement when finally on board

easyJet need to ensure that whether pre-booking seats or not children aren’t split from their parents the crew spent the majority of boarding asking passengers to move to accommodate two families. Surely the system identifies minors on a booking !!!!! It was all very frustrating to watch and caused delays which I’m sure cost easyJet more in the long run rather that automatically allocating families with minors seats together automatically.

Not great! Rude staff in London and the worse baggage reclaim I’ve ever seen. Great staff in flight but doubt I’ll fly with them again

Staff had been really impolite at the boarding area and for both ways charged high extra fees without a reason. For the check-in luggage which was measured 3.5 kg and was confirmed by the stuff to cost 40 € , 60 Euros had been purchased from our credit card. When confronted staff did call us both liars and claimed to never have announced anything. Flight back , when not wanting to press a backpack in a measuring metal instead of hand measuring , staff got angry that one did not follow her order, which was than escalated by the team. Although carrying a baby anyways staff did not offer any help in the unreasonable process and than charged again extra money. Cabine crew has been friendly but this experience LL lead to not booking easy jet at all in the future. Check in process in Edinburgh anyways chaotic,to the family check-in and disabled check-in everybody else was guided for check in process, so people just getting in between each other, not possible to monitor your own stuff.

As you would expect from a budget airline Left and arrived on time, no frills, not even a glass of water offered But you get what you pay for

The distance between seats was narrow. So my recommendation is to increase it

Very good, everything went straight forward, boarding, during the flight, landing and all on time Well done

flight delayed, no information given until late on, Ryanair app said "on time" until 5 minutes before expected departure time, crew rushed us to board, when it was already 3 hours late

I got denied boarding bevause they said they "ran out of seats on a plane"

Speakers were blaring. It's like being in a Moroccan market and you keep getting shouted at with what's for sale

What can you say Ryanair get you there,no frills Not so cheap anymore ..... but what is now days! Would use again as always. Good flight times for us.

Very unpleasant staff, disgusting service, ignoring requests, refusal to help

Late again rude staff at gate bullying passengers made us stand in the cold 3degrees for 40 mins before they let us board

The usual average Ryanair flight, but we landed 20 min before due time, which was very good.

Enjoyed our flight with Ryanair to Arrecife. Flight boarded pretty much on time, crew were welcoming and very good. Generally good for a frequent low cost flight, Seats could however have been more comfortable.

I asked for a window seat and when I got on the plane 24A did not have a window so was very not happy, but good and entertainment was good and the staff was very good, so the only complaint was the seating.

Flight canceled two hours beforehand, BA reticketed us so that we would have had to leave from Edinburgh instead of Glasgow, where we were already at the airport. We would have arrived in Boston too late to get home to Vermont. Instead with some pressure we were reticketed from Glasgow on Lufthansa, which avoided Heathrow, a great benefit after our horrible experience at Heathrow when we arrived in Britain three weeks earlier. (Kayak assebled an itierary that did not leave adeqate time for the connection at Heathrow, where thousands of people were trying tio get through inadequate and badly staffed security and staff did not know the slightest details about where and which lines we should get in.) The British Airways travel experience is not to be recommended these days.

My seat was in a good row. In our section it was the first row. But it was difficult tooperate seat entertainment features > table, screen, even though I often fly.

Better and more attentive crew and more food options. Leg space is very tight.

We left our sons tablet on the British Airways plane And we can’t get a hold of anyone to try to locate it. I have to call multiple numbers.

Sitting in the plane for an extended period of time was very hot and uncomfortable. Very late arrival happened to not affect me but many others probably missed their connection because it also took a long time to get to the terminal.

My worst flying experience so far. This flight was delayed a total of 42 hours and diverted to New York before it was finally cancelled. It was delayed 4 and a half hours in London. As we were scanning our boarding passes at the gate they advised that the flight was being diverted to JFK since the delays caused us to missed the open hours for Charlotte international customs and immigration. We were assured multiple times by airport personnel, flight attendants, and the Pilot that we would land at JFK go through customs and immigration and then reboard the plane to fly to Charlotte in the same night. When we landed in New York the pilot advised us as we were retrieving our carry on luggage that we were delayed till 10am the next morning and to see guest services to get a room for the night. During this time I had to purchase a room for a family member in Charlotte which drove over 4 and a half hours to pick us up from Charlotte. This could have been avoided if American Airlines had been up front about the delay. Then after standing in line for over 2 and a half hours at guest services we were taken by taxi to a hotel 30 minutes out of the way. Luckily I looked for other flights that night and found one at 8 am to get on. The initial flight which we were scheduled to fly to charlotte in was delayed 12 more times and was finally cancelled 42 hours after it was supposed to land. I am unaware of what happened to the guest that were supposed to fly on the flight after we were placed on another flight but 42 hours in delays for a direct flight is absolutely ridiculous.

The boarding to Gatwick was a breeze but the boarding from Gatwick was a nightmare. The onboard service to Gatwick had a lot to be desired but the onboard sevice from Gatwick was amazing ! Very nice, friendly and funny ! Would I recommend BA to anyone.? ! Yes I would!

Really quick check in and security at Heathrow Terminal 5. Staff on board were lovely and very friendly. Could have provided a few more drinks on the flight but they were available at the back of the plane.

Flight boarded and took off late for unknown reasons. Crew insisted we check our hand luggage due to full flight, which it was not even close to full. Then had to wait almost an hour a and a half for the hand luggage to come onto the luggage belt since it was loaded last. This came after many hours of traveling pregnant with my 6 year old daughter. Really didn’t appreciate the unnecessary delays. What the hell?

Were delayed in the airport for 5 hours with no explanation. Flight kept getting delayed by an hour at a time and wizz air staff were no where to be found

The flight was delayed 5 hours and I'm and invalid,I wan a refund for this

The cabin crew on that flight were super fantastic and super helpful. They were so polite and considerate that i felt i travelled with a 5star airline.

Delayed delayed delayed - always with Wizzair. Staff were friendly and well mannered but clearly the company is unorganized and the aircrafts are outdated.

It's a budget airline. Great for short flight. Smooth landing.

4 hr delay and only told less than 2hrs before. Only given water and nuts on the flight as complimentary service. Left to wait in rain before boarding.

To be honest I did not like anything. Communication to why my flight was cancelled mid air 2 and half hours into my flight. Customer service desk were not helpful with providing information or a solution on what can be done.

I have been treated unacceptably by WizzAir aircraft crew in a previous flight, they threatened me and abused me, and I received an OFFICIAL written apology, but only two (2) months later. This flight had no such unacceptable behaviour, but it's not nice to be left waiting in the walkway (from gate to aircraft) for a long time, just so that the 'boarding' appears to be early, even if actual departure is not.

What I liked new airplane Sitting was extremely uncomfortable! Crew not smiley at all Always chewing gum

The flight was cancelled just 4 hours before the take off...

Additional Nonstop Routes to Europe This Summer

Catch a nonstop flight from Dallas to Dublin thanks to American Airlines' expanded year-round ... [+] service.

Flights from Charlotte and New York will utilize Boeing 777-200s, while the Chicago and Philadelphia routes will be operated by 787-9 and 787-8 aircraft, respectively.

The carrier is also expanding several flights from seasonal to year-round service, including nonstop hops from Charlotte (CLT) to Madrid (MAD), Dallas (DFW) to Dublin (DUB) and Rome (FCO), and Philadelphia (PHL) to Barcelona (BCN) and Lisbon (LIS). The Chicago-to-Madrid flight and summertime hauls from Dallas to Dublin will be operated by Boeing 777-200 planes, while the others will be serviced by a mix of Boeing 787-8 and 787-9 aircraft.

Use AAdvantage Miles to Save Money on Flights

The more flexible you can be with your dates, the easier it’ll be to redeem miles for free (or nearly free) flights. Sign up for American Airlines’ AAdvantage loyalty program before you go to accumulate miles to put toward future trips. You can also pick up extra miles by doing some retail therapy via the carrier’s online shopping portal . Of course, the fastest and easiest way to earn airline miles is by signing up for a co-branded credit card—just make sure you are in a position to hit the minimum spending requirement responsibly—or by transferring points from Bilt Rewards.

What is a round-trip flight?

What is a one-way flight, when booking cash tickets, when redeeming points and miles, consider booking open-jaw flights.

Are round-trip flights cheaper? The short answer is that it depends . Where you’re traveling to and if you’re paying with cash or miles are the biggest factors in the equation.

For instance, if you’re traveling between the U.S. and Europe and paying in cash, it's cheaper to book a round-trip flight. But if you’re paying for that same flight with miles, the price of two one-way tickets will most often be the same as a round-trip flight (though the taxes paid may vary).

There are other considerations besides just price when comparing round-trip versus one-way flights. Travelers might be surprised to find that booking a round-trip award flight could lead to issues if you have a change in plans mid-trip.

Here's a look at options to weigh when booking round-trip versus one-way flights and answers to some frequently asked questions.

A one-way flight, in contrast, is a ticket booked with no return. So you’re only booking a flight from Destination A to Destination B. You can purchase a second, separate ticket from Destination B back to Destination A (should you so choose). One-way flights can be booked with cash or miles.

These types of flights are a good option for those who don’t know their return date, are only traveling in one direction or booking an open-jaw itinerary .

» Learn more: The best days to book a flight and when to fly

When booking flights paid in cash, our recommendation is pretty simple: Book the option that's cheapest for your trip. If a round-trip flight is cheaper than two one-way flights, there's no reason to book two one-way flights.

If two one-way flights are the same price as a round-trip, it might make sense to book the one-way flight (as long as you don’t mind keeping track of the two separate reservations). Even though many airlines have eliminated change fees , it's much easier to change — or even cancel — a flight when there’s only one flight on the reservation to make a change to.

If you’re flying domestically in the U.S., the cost of two one-way flights will usually be the same as a round trip; however, when flying internationally, it can be much more expensive to book two one-way tickets.

Sample flight within the U.S.

In this example flight search on American Airlines , booking two one-way tickets from Newark to Miami will cost $154 for the outgoing flight and $124 for the return, for a total of $278.

Return flight

europe round trip flights

If you were to book these two flights as a round-trip ticket, the price would be exactly the same at $278.

Sample international flight

It's a different ball game with international flights.

Take a look at this flight search from Washington-Dulles to Frankfurt, Germany, on United Airlines . If you were to book the flights as two one-way tickets, it would cost you $3,110.

europe round trip flights

However, if you book these same flights as part of a round-trip ticket, you’d have to pay $1,783, representing a significant savings over booking two one-way flights.

If you're planning on using points and miles to book award flights, you have a different set of factors to consider. In the case of award travel, it can make sense to book two one-way flights instead of a round-trip award.

Two one-way awards offer more flexibility

Most U.S. airlines have dropped change fees on both award and paid flights. So, if the price is the same, consider booking two one-way awards instead of a round-trip award to gain extra flexibility. Keep in mind that if you book a round trip, depending on the airline, you may have difficulty getting your miles redeposited if you need to change your award ticket after taking the first leg of the flight.

For example, if you cancel a United award flight midtrip, you'll retain the miles as a future flight credit. While the miles won't be refunded to your account, you'll have the chance to use them in the future.

Watch for higher taxes and fees when booking two one-way awards

When considering whether to book round-trip versus one-way awards, it's important to price out both options — particularly when flying overseas. Some airlines charge higher taxes and fees for awards that originate in certain regions of the world.

Delta SkyMiles is infamous for charging higher fees for award flights that originate in Europe. Also, particularly for international flights, Delta will often price round-trip award flights at less than the cost of two one-way awards.

For example, take a round-trip award from New York to Paris. Delta charges 50,000 SkyMiles plus $85 in taxes and fees for a round-trip main cabin award.

europe round trip flights

However, if you book the same flights as two one-way awards, you'll pay a total of 74,000 SkyMiles plus roughly $220 in taxes and fees. The outbound award costs 37,000 miles plus $6 in taxes and fees. Then, you'll need to pay another 37,000 SkyMiles plus around $220 to fly home.

In a situation like this, it makes sense to book a round-trip award. You'll save on miles and out-of-pocket costs.

Consider change fees on award flights

Most U.S. airlines have eliminated change fees on both paid flights and award tickets. However, that's not the case with all mileage programs. If you're booking through a mileage program that charges change fees, you may want to book a round-trip award to reduce the fees you could pay if you need to cancel the trip.

» Learn more: Booking flights with points or miles expands refund option

Say you're considering flying to Europe to take a cruise from Budapest to Munich. One might assume that your only options are to:

Book a round-trip flight into one of the cities plus book a one-way intra-Europe flight between them.

Book two one-way flights — one-way into Budapest and one-way back from Munich.

However, there's a third option: booking an "open-jaw" flight . Many airlines will let you book a flight into Budapest and a flight back from Munich on the same ticket. Rather than pricing these flights as two one-way flights, the airline generally prices the flights similar to a round-trip.

» Learn more: The guide to open-jaw flights with Chase points

If you're using airline miles to book these flights, check to see if it's cheaper to book two one-way awards or an open-jaw award. As outlined in the Delta example above, award flights originating in Europe can have much higher taxes and fees. So it might make sense to book the two award segments together as a multicity award.

In the past, airlines charged more for booking two one-way flights rather than a round-trip on the same route. However, this isn't the case anymore on most domestic flights and even some international flights — mostly thanks to competition from low-cost carriers.

In short, airlines charge more for one-way flights on the routes when they can get away with doing so. If only one airline is operating a particular route, it might increase the price of one-way flights to generate more revenue from business travelers and others that are willing to pay more for the nonstop flight.

However, when there's competition from other airlines, the cost of one-way flights often drops to compete with the other airlines serving that route.

Booking a round-trip flight can be cheaper than booking one-way tickets on the same flights. Before booking two one-way flights, check the round-trip price to see if it's cheaper. Even if you're flying out of a different city than you're flying into, booking a so-called "open-jaw" flight could be much cheaper than booking two one-way flights.

Most U.S. airline loyalty programs will charge the same number of miles whether you book round-trip or two one-way flights. Because of this, it can make sense to book two one-way flights instead of a round-trip award to get flexibility in case you need to change or cancel plans.

However, this isn't always the case. Some loyalty programs — such as Delta — charge fewer miles for booking a round-trip award instead of two one-way flights. We recommend pricing out award flights both ways just to be sure.

Jill Biden takes 7,200-mile round trip in private jet from D-Day event in France to Delaware for Hunter's trial

F irst Lady Jill Biden made a 7,200-mile trip from the D-Day commemorative event in France to Delaware for her stepson Hunter's federal firearms trial on Friday.

After attending a D-Day anniversary event in Normandy, France, where President Joe Biden spoke about the current threats to democracy mirroring those faced during World War II, she quickly returned to her home state.

Despite having a state dinner back in France on Saturday, she's chosen to make the 7,200-mile round trip to be present in court.

Hunter Biden , the president's only surviving son, is currently on trial facing three federal charges related to the alleged purchase of a firearm while addicted to drugs. These charges include making a false statement in the purchase of a firearm, providing false information required by a federal firearms licensed dealer, and possession of a firearm by an unlawful user of or addicted to a controlled substance.

If found guilty on all counts, he could face up to 25 years in prison and fines exceeding $750,000. However, it's highly unlikely that he will receive the maximum sentence if convicted, reports the Express US .

Given the First Lady 's unexpected visit and extensive travel, there's speculation that she may testify as a defense witness in her stepson's case. The first defense witness called to the stand today was the owner of the gun store.

The situation follows the recent verdict in former President Donald Trump 's hush money trial in New York last Friday, where he was found guilty on all 34 counts related to his payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels to suppress the story of his extramarital affair before the 2016 election.

Attention has now turned to the president's 54-year-old son who faces three charges of illegal firearm possession, allegedly obtained without properly disclosing his crack cocaine addiction on the federal background check form.

While President Biden is not directly involved in the case, the trial is likely to attract unwanted attention and be used against him in his re-election campaign, including the upcoming first debate with Trump later this month, where the two leading candidates are expected to engage in a heated exchange.

What to Know About Biden’s Trip to France

The international trek offers the president a chance to commemorate D-Day and to contrast with his predecessor.

What to Know: Biden’s Trip to France

Evan Vucci | AP

President Joe Biden is welcomed by French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal, left, after arriving at Orly Airport south of Paris on Wednesday, June 5.

Key Takeaways

  • The trip marks Biden’s first state visit to France.
  • The president will deliver remarks commemorating the 80th anniversary of D-Day.
  • Along with French President Emmanuel Macron, Biden is also expected to talk with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

President Joe Biden arrived in France on Wednesday for a visit during which he will commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day, when Allied forces landed in Normandy and paved the way for the liberation of Europe in World War II. The trip also marks Biden’s first state visit to France.

The historic D-Day operation included nearly 160,000 troops from Britain , the U.S. , Canada and other nations, and helped lead to the defeat of Nazi Germany. On Thursday, Biden is expected to deliver remarks at a ceremony in Normandy commemorating the event, and to participate in a wreath-laying. At least 25 heads of state are expected to be in France to mark the occasion.

Did You Know?

The anniversary provides the perfect opportunity for Biden to weave together symbolism with policy and politics. Along with falling in the midst of his reelection campaign – and offering him opportunities to contrast with his opponent, former President Donald Trump – the visit to America's oldest ally comes as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is in its second year, the humanitarian crisis in the Middle East continues to escalate and China looms large over Taiwan, threatening its independence.

World War II “showed the world the value of strong alliances and partnerships, which is a lesson that continues to resonate strongly today, both in Europe and, quite frankly, well beyond Europe,” John Kirby, White House national security communications advisor, told reporters earlier this week during a preview of Biden’s trip.

“President Biden has made revitalizing our relationships a key priority, recognizing that we are stronger when we act together and that today’s challenges require global perspectives, global approaches, global responses, and multilateral effort and cooperation,” Kirby said. “France is our oldest ally, and this visit will underscore continued U.S.-French leadership on a range of consequential global issues.”

The Best Political Cartoons on Joe Biden

europe round trip flights

Biden, who will be in France for five days, is also scheduled to deliver remarks Friday at Pointe Du Hoc – where American soldiers on D-Day scaled cliffs to seize German artillery. He’s expected to focus on the importance of fighting for democracy.

“You can point to real lives that were impacted at Pointe du Hoc,” Kirby said. “You can point to real blood that was spilt in pursuit of that loftier goal. And you can tell stories about real men who climbed real cliffs and faced real bullets and real danger in the pursuit of something a whole hell of a lot bigger than themselves.”

Following the anniversary commemorations, French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte Macron, will host Biden and First Lady Jill Biden for the state visit. During a bilateral meeting between Biden and Macron, the two presidents will discuss continuing to support Ukraine, the war in Gaza and efforts to combat climate change, Kirby said.

Macron is reportedly weighing sending French military trainers to Ukraine – a potential move that’s sparked concern among some allies as it could lead to increased tensions with Russia. Notably, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will be in France this week as well, and is expected to meet with both Macron and Biden.

Biden follows a long line of U.S. presidents who have visited France to commemorate D-Day. His trip comes 40 years after former President Ronald Reagan’s famous speech at Pointe du Hoc, where he stressed the importance of allies.

"We in America have learned bitter lessons from two World Wars: It is better to be here ready to protect the peace, than to take blind shelter across the sea, rushing to respond only after freedom is lost. We’ve learned that isolationism never was and never will be an acceptable response to tyrannical governments with an expansionist intent," Reagan said during remarks on the 40th anniversary of D-Day.

In the background of Biden’s trip, of course, is the 2024 presidential election – the outcome of which could impact the relationship between the U.S., France and other NATO allies. Trump, for example, has repeatedly called out NATO members for not devoting enough money to defense, and has threatened not to come to the aid of those who don’t meet the alliance’s defense spending target – something he’s also sought to frame as a negotiating tactic.

While in France, Biden also plans to speak with U.S. and international veterans who served in World War II, and to visit a cemetery honoring fallen American soldiers during World War I. During a Trump trip to France in 2018, the former president did not visit the WWI Aisne-Marne American Cemetery due to what the White House at the time said was poor weather. Later reporting from The Atlantic said Trump criticized the dead buried there as “losers,” which Trump denied.

Top 5 airlines flying to Europe

On time take off and early arrival, what else can one want

My last few flights with Emirates have always been delayed at least a half an hour. When my layover is only an hour and a half to two hours, 30 minutes makes a big difference. I’m going to check out other airlines.

we bought trip insurance from you and could not use it. 'underrated' only return 50 % of trip cost. my doctor told me i have stage 4 cancer and that I might not live till the end of the month..

Flight got canceled without any prior information and it caused lot of trouble

Staff were friendly, and provided great service. The food was plentiful and delicious. Food could have been hotter.

I was traveling business purposes and I only had one carry on and a personal computer back pack . My carry on was 8.5 kg little more than allowable. At jfk airport check in they did not let me carry it . I was little disappointed.

More leg room and comfortable seats at least for long flights

The entertainment selections are amazing. But the live TV is sometimes spotty. If you’re going to have it, then have it. If you can’t make it consistent, then, perhaps it’s better not to have it. The crew are always cordial when approached, but they seem to do the minimum and sit around, talking to each other in the back of the plane during the flight. I realize that delays are not always predictable, but I missed my flight in Dubai because we left 90 minutes late from Washington. I will say that Emirates took very good care of me in Dubai. But I would rather not be delayed.

Probably the best flight I’ve ever been on. Emirates first class is leagues beyond British airways and Lufthansa’s.

Great flight. Comfortable seats, courteous service, and excellent selection for entertainment.

The free wi if was highly appreciated and worked very well. Staff was great!

Fine. It was a 25 minute ride in a tiny plane that left 20 mins late

The only issue was a short window to make my connecting flight, and nobody to assist me in finding my way to the next gate.

This is my first time flying Aegean Air and I had a great first time experience. I will fly this airline again.

There was not any food and I didn't use the entertainment

Just ok. No much of a great travel experience. If you need point A to B they are ok.

More leg room, great if crew could move people before flight (ie if 3 in a row, offer to move 1 or 2 to an empty 3 seat row rather than let people move themselves after takeoff

Θα πρέπει να υπάρχει εστίαση στη γρήγορη και εύκολη επιβίβαση/αποβίβαση

Flight was late, boarding totally chaotic, seat uncomfortable, food good, attendants and pilots good.

Awful. Flight was continuously getting delayed and gates kept changing without any reason. Flight was delayed for more then 3 hours

Half the bathrooms assigned to economy were out of action

The plane was FREEZING SEATS UNCOMFORTABLE Otherwise smooth Thank you

Boarding was chaotic. I didn’t finish dinner because I went to bed early. Breakfast omelet was overcooked and tasteless but croissant was better than usual. Plane was dirty—crumbs in every seam and lavatory was poorly maintained (paint peeling, etc.) and toilet paper had not been refreshed before takeoff. No cubby for storage in first and seat was narrow.

I'm a larger, athletic guy (6'2", 260lbs powerlifter) and I found the seats incredibly uncomfortable with minimal leg room, especially in a window seat. Now, I full understand that being smaller may change my view but even if I was 80lbs less, my legs would be the same size and I was sandwiched between my seat and the seat in front of me.

Seat back monitors and outlets were dead and not working.

The crew, food, and entertainment were all good. But my screen had some sort of bug where if I turned it off, it would turn back on after 2-5 minutes. At full brightness. It made it very hard to get any shut-eye on the overnight flight. Also, the older Boeing plane, while nicely cared for (and no doors fell off 😅👏) doesn't have the nice air quality of newer planes. So I felt a bit greasy by the time we landed in Sweden.

Service was good for such a short flight. Small plane but smooth flight.

The flight was delayed but we got to our final destination.

Uncomfortable seats on 14 hour flight. Mediocre food. On time and great crew.

Quick and efficient as always. Air France managed to loose and damage my luggage that never made it onto my KLM flight.

The flight was again delayed for more then 2 hours with some lousy explanation regarding the reason of the delay. Although the flight was delayed for more than 2 hours, no refreshments were offered (according to EU regulations). Last 4 flights on KLM - always at least 2 hrs late. So be prepared that you cannot plan anything with KLM.

The flight was delayed for 2 hrs. Because they didn’t have a crew to fly. And it is not a first time for klm to do that. Last time they cancelled my filght and rebooked me 3 days later. Not reliable airline

We left one hour late because of technical difficulties. The economy comfort seats are great for the price. The crew was mediocre, they do not provide a pleasant experience, they just deliver food and drinks and give orders, not very amicable, no service and hospitality focus.

Booked connecting flights with KlM. My serving flight was the furthest part of the airport. On arrival in Zurich. My two cases arrived but only one carry on belong to my son. His three suitcase didn't arrive. After enquiring we discovered they were still in Amsterdam. We landed at 11.12. We eventually left the airport just after one.

Seats are fair enough for medium tall people. Good food all the trip. Fight attendances are warm

Overall a good experience. We were disappointed when we had to check our carry on due to the plane being full. KLM hadn’t notified us and we had valuable items in the carry on but they still made us check it. Some of the food was great and some was mediocre. Crew is really kind and funny.

One of the vstewardeses wanted to bump me of the plane for absolutely nothing. There is CCTV in the plane ans everything can be verified. Very disappointing , you all will see, o other 5 years and the passangers who does not smile to flight attendent will be bumped off...

The worst airline. Cancelled flight 30 min before boarding and rebooked on flight after 3 days.

It was nice to be on a legacy airline, people try at least.

I arrived 59 minutes before the flight in Tampa due to Massive traffic jam and the flight was closed and I was told that I’d simply have to “book a new ticket on line myself and the gate agents couldn’t help me”. Even though the flight was delayed over 30 minutes, (leaving one hour and 29 minutes before departure, they refused to assist in any way explaining that it’s automatic and there can be no exceptions. Horrible experience due to poor management at gate. I fly this option 2-3 times a year and have a good experience with the cabin crew etc. But, Tampa agents are not trained or allowed customer service. I once was a gate agent for USAir, I know times have changed, but forcing me to purchase a new ticket and complete indifference and inconvenience. No thanks

Crew members were good. Seats were packed and too tight .

Carry on luggage size for economy passengers significantly smaller than other airlines, so nearly all ecomy passengers had their bags taken and checked.

Had a short layover in Zurich, luggage marked expedite and short layover but still didn’t get luggage when arrived in Split until 3 days later even though husband got his.

On time flight, I requested wheelchair in Zurich , when I arrived they were no where to be found, I had one hour between flights I had to walk with great difficulty.

seats are too tight and uncomfortable everything else went well.

We had issues with upgrading our seats. The flight itself was fine.

Horrible experience. They "GAME" with seats they decided to play where you can`t select or get seat during check-in without paying and then forcing you to stay long line at the Customer Service at the gate to get a boarding ticket with seat assigned is pathetic. Will never fly with United again!

SO disappointing. I spent so much money on this ticket, for them to cancel and not be able to rebook me in time. They were very unhelpful, and condescending throughout the whole Swiss airport. Will not be flying again.

So terrible. They would not rebook me for a flight until 2 days. I had to spend so much money to get my own flight. They were rude and not helpful.
