BWF World Tour finals: Viktor Axelsen beats Anthony Ginting to send Indonesian out on tiebreak in Hangzhou

A three-way tie in Group A sees Olympic champion Axelsen and Shi Yuqi qualify for the semi-finals, with Ginting missing out on tiebreak rules.

Axelsen Ginting BWF WT Finals 23 (NO NEW USE AFTER 18 DEC 2023)

There was a dramatic end to the BWF World Tour Finals 2023 group stages for Viktor Axelsen and Anthony Ginting on Friday (15 December) as badminton world number one Axelsen sent his Indonesian opponent tumbling out of the competition.

Ginting had won his opening two matches against Shi Yuqi and top-seeded Naraoka Kodai , putting him in driving position after Thursday. But Axelsen earned a hard-fought three-game 16–21, 21–7, 21–13 victory in their last group tie on Friday to put both men on two wins and one defeat.

That meant a match happening simultaneously on the other court, between Naraoka and Shi, would determine the semi-final qualifiers from Group A in men's singles. Shi had beaten Axelsen and lost to Ginting, but a win against Naraoka would guarantee his spot in the last four.

Things seemed to be going Ginting's way as Naraoka took the first game against Shi and also held what seemed like a comfortable four-point lead on two different occasions in the second, only for Shi to stage a comeback before sealing a comfortable deciding set 18–21, 23–21, 21–13.

With Shi, Axelsen, and Ginting all on two wins and one loss, Shi topped the group by virtue of his games difference, winning five games and losing three across his three matches. Both Axelsen and Ginting won one more game than they lost, which meant Axelsen's better point difference – +29 to Ginting's -6 – sent the Indonesian home.

Ginting's teammate Jonatan Christie , however, sealed his last four spot in Group B despite losing to Li Shifeng in straight games. Christie ended up in another three-way tie with  Anders Antonsen and Li, with all three men sitting on two wins and one loss and a games difference of 4–2. Antonsen won the group with a +19 points difference, compared to Christie's +13. Li missed out on +4.

Meanwhile, favourites An Se-young and Tai Tzu-ying earned semi-final spots in women's singles Group A. An, who began her campaign with a shock defeat to compatriot Kim Ga-eun, beat Tai 21–17, 21–15 – which could have eliminated the Chinese Taipei shuttler.

But Kim lost the deciding match to Gregoria Mariska Tunjung of Indonesia, ensuring An and Tai would both be in the last four. Carolina Marín won Group B from Chen Yufei by virtue of a close-run 25–23, 24–22 contest.

Axelsen, Tai triumph in badminton World Tour Finals

O lympic badminton champion Viktor Axelsen and former world number one Tai Tzu-ying of Taiwan triumphed on Sunday in their BWF World Tour Finals deciders in Hangzhou.

The 29-year-old Dane dominated China's Shi Yuqi in straight sets 21-11, 21-12 in a one-sided men's final of the year-ending Badminton World Federation (BWF) event in China's east.

"I'm extremely proud and extremely tired," said world number one Axelsen, who speaks fluent Chinese.

"My year has been extraordinary. It has also been marked by big disappointments," he said, pointing to defeats in the All England Open and the World Championships on home soil.

"But a great sportsman gets up and recovers from disappointing experiences. And that's what I managed to do. I've won some big titles, so I can't be disappointed with this year," he said.

In the women's final, world number four Tai fought back to get the better of Spain's Carolina Marin 12-21, 21-14, 21-18.

Marin is a former Olympic champion and the only European in the women's world top 10. She made the final after a gripping, three-set defeat of China's Chen Yufei, another Olympic champion, in Saturday's semi-finals.

"I wasn't able to train well before coming, so my preparation and performance here were not optimal," Tai said.

"But when I saw the excellent form of Carolina Marin and Chen Yufei... I told myself I had to grit my teeth and do my best to be able to compete," she said.

In the men's doubles, South Korean world champions Kang Min-hyuk and Seo Seung-jae overcame the Chinese pair of Liang Weikeng-Wang Chang 21-17, 22-20 to win the men's doubles.

Chen Qingchen and Jia Yifan gave the home crowd something to cheer about by beating South Korea's Baek Ha-na and Lee So-hee 21-16, 21-16 to win the women's doubles.

The mixed doubles title went to Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong with a 21-11, 21-18 defeat of Feng Yanzhe and Huang Dongping in an all-Chinese final.

Viktor Axelsen on the podium as champion of the 2024 Malaysia Masters

The badminton world witnessed a thrilling showdown at the 2024 Malaysia Masters, where Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen clinched his first title of the year. In a gripping men’s singles final, Axelsen overcame Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia in a three-game battle, marking a significant milestone in his Olympic title defense journey.

The match commenced with Axelsen asserting dominance, swiftly taking the first game 21-6. Despite the home crowd’s support, Lee Zii Jia struggled with unforced errors, giving Axelsen an early advantage. However, the Malaysian star showcased his resilience in the second game, seizing control and pushing the match to a decider with a 22-20 win.

The final game was a testament to Axelsen’s tenacity and skill. After a quick start, leading 5-0, Lee Zii Jia narrowed the gap to 7-6, threatening a comeback. But the Danish world number one maintained his composure and extended the lead, ultimately securing the championship with a 21-13 victory.

This win at the Perodua Malaysia Masters adds to Axelsen’s impressive career achievements and sets a promising tone for his upcoming competitions. The badminton community eagerly anticipates his next moves on the World Tour as he continues to solidify his place among the sport’s elite.

In the women’s singles final, China’s Wang Zhi Yi triumphed over India’s PV Sindhu, adding another layer of excitement to the tournament. As the 2024 Malaysia Masters concludes, fans and players alike reflect on the memorable performances that have once again highlighted the dynamic and competitive spirit of badminton.

Viktor Axelsen book release. Win the book and get excerpt of one chapter here

The new book from Viktor Axelsen has hit stores in Denmark. Soon an English language version will be published.

Viktor Axelsen book: Viktor Axelsen has just released a new autobiography. The book is entitled “Vindervilje” (which roughly translates to The Will to Win). The book is about Viktor’s career and offers lots of tips and good advice.

The book makes for an interesting read for any fan of Axelsen and badminton fans in general.

Viktor Axelsen’s book was originally published in Danish. The English edition is expected to be published in 2024. As a Badmintonspeak.com reader, you get a chance to win a copy. We will ship the Viktor Axelsen book to your home address.

Viktor Axelsen book excerpt

Google translated excerpt of the Viktor Axelsen book:

I am of the opinion that if we elite athletes have to take a purely political approach to where we are going to play, then there are a great many countries where that is not an option.

VIktor Axelsen book

My approach is that in the countries where tournaments are held – and where Danish companies operate and Danish citizens, including politicians, go on holiday – it is also okay for me to be there. We play tournaments in Dubai, we play in China.

We played official championships in Russia until there was an official political boycott of the country. Because then it’s a different matter – athletes must of course also stop traveling in a certain country.

But in the end, I found it difficult to see that I should be given greater responsibility than the rest of official Denmark. I know what’s going on in the Middle East, and I also know that Qatar has been awarded the World Cup in football.

Again, a state boycott would be needed so that the footballers do not play there. I don’t think we can expect a higher political morality from athletes than the rest of the Danish people and the top of Danish business life.

Dubai was the solution I felt had the most benefits overall. Going to Switzerland, Monaco, or whatever else people have written about online, was not at all on the table. It was the badminton setup that did the talking. These were my opportunities in everyday life and not the zeros on the check because then I should have chosen another sport to become the best in the world.

Axelsen suffered an ankle injury during the pre-quarterfinals at the Singapore Open 2024.

Defending champion Viktor Axelsen has announced his withdrawal from the Indonesia Open 2024 , citing an ankle injury. The announcement was made public on X (formerly Twitter), where the reigning Olympic champion expressed his disappointment at missing the tournament in Jakarta.

Viktor Axelsen’s withdrawal has opened the opportunity for Leong Jun Hao who received the promotion. The Malaysian will face no #3 seed Jonatan Christie of Indonesia in the first round.

Axelsen, who won the Indonesia Open in 2023 by defeating local favourite Anthony Sinisuka Ginting in straight games, sustained the injury during his last-16 win over Lin Chun Yi at the Singapore Open 2024. The injury also forced him to miss the semifinals of the Singapore Open.

In his statement on X, Axelsen wrote, “Hi guys. I’ve been trying all I can to get ready for Indonesia Open, but unfortunately I’m not fit to play. Will miss playing here in Jakarta. I promise to be back soon again.”

Hi guys. I've been trying all I can to get ready for Indonesia Open, but unfortunately I'm not fit to play. Will miss playing here in Jakarta 💔 I promise to be back soon again. 💪💯🏸 — Viktor Axelsen (@ViktorAxelsen) June 3, 2024

The Danish shuttler had previously mentioned the injury in another post, stating, “During my 2nd round, I made a small rollover on my right ankle. Initially I felt fine and yesterday [against Leong] it was nothing but a bit of soreness.”

Axelsen recently claimed his first World Tour title of the year at the 2024 BWF Badminton Malaysia Masters in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday (26 May). In the final, he overcame in-form shuttler Lee Zii Jia of Malaysia, 21-6, 20-22, 21-13, to secure the men’s singles crown.
