GMC Safari Transmission Fluid

GMC Safari

The GMC Safari is a minivan that was produced and sold by the GMC division of General Motors. It was introduced in 1985 and was produced until 2005, when it was replaced by the GMC Acadia.

The Safari was based on the same platform as the Chevrolet Astro and shared many of its design features, including its front-engine, rear-wheel drive layout and its boxy, rugged appearance.

It was available in both standard and extended-length versions, and was offered with a range of engines, including V6 and V8 options.

The Safari was known for its spacious interior, which could seat up to eight passengers, and its versatility, with options for both cargo and passenger configurations.

Keep your Safari on the road longer with the help of proper transmission fluid maintenance. Learn more!

What Type of Fluid Does a GMC Safari Use?

Depending on the transmission the comes in your GMC Safari, the transmission fluid is pretty consistent. Since the GMC Safari has a 4l60e transmission, it will take either Dexron 3 or Dexron 6 .

The great thing about  Dexron transmission fluid is that you can use Dex VI in older GM transmissions that call for Dex III.

These transmission fluids are common in most GM vehicles.

GMC Safari Transmission Fluid Capacity

The fluid capacity of your GMC Safari depends on what automatic transmission you have. In most cases, your GMC Safari’s transmission fluid capacity is anywhere from 10-14 quarts.

Here are the capacities by transmission that come in a GMC Safari

  • 4l60e: 11.5 quarts

How To Check GMC Safari Transmission Fluid

Checking transmission fluid in a GMC Safari is simple and quick to do. It’s always recommended that you check transmission fluid when the vehicle is on and in park on a flat surface.

How To Add Transmission Fluid To GMC Safari

Adding transmission fluid to your GMC Safari is a done by filling transmission fluid through the transmission dipstick tube, which is located on the passenger side near the firewall.

When adding transmission fluid to your GMC Safari, it is important to make sure you have the correct level, as mentioned before.

GMC Safari Transmission Fluid Change

The beauty of the GMC Safari like most GM vehicles is that it is easy to maintain, making them great vehicles for the average DIYer.  The GMC Safari was designed for ease of use, making transmission fluid changes an easy task for the average weekend mechanic.

This video below shows step by step how to change the transmission fluid on your GMC Safari.

How Often Should You Change Transmission Fluid In A GMC Safari?

The common automatic transmission fluid change interval for the GMC Safari is every 30,000-60,000 miles depending on condition of the fluid.

For “severe” use such as towing often, hauling heavy weight, or sitting in stop and go traffic, it’s better to change the fluid every 30-45,000 miles.

The best indicator to determine how often to change transmission fluid in your GMC Safari is by looking at the transmission fluid every so often to see what condition it’s in. In the fluid color chart below you will see how transmission fluid gets darker over time die to wear and overheating.

Transmission Fluid Color Comparison chart

GMC Safari Transmission Fluid Temperature

The ideal transmission temperature for your GMC Safari when fully warm is in the 150 – 180 degree range. This is a safe transmission temperature that will allow for tens of thousands of miles of fluid life.

The transmission temperature chart below shows how long you can expect your GMC Safari’s transmission to last at a given temperature.

Get A Transmission Cooler For Your GMC Safari

Looking to lower the transmission fluid in your GMC Safari? Install a transmission cooler! Our helpful transmission cooler buyer’s guide  gives you all the information you need to  install a transmission cooler  and find the right one for your needs.

In our recommendation, a medium sized  plate and fin or stacked plate style cooler would be best for your GMC Safari to keep transmission temperatures down.

change transmission oil or not?

03 gmc safari transmission fluid

  • Add to quote

i found this on a message board and thought i'd post to see what you guys think because i always thought you were supposed to change the trannee oil and filter Her's what he said I have a friend that is an Autoshop teacher who specializes in transmissions, particularly rebuilding automatic transmissions with planetary gearsets (which is most transmissions minus those found in hondas and in some newer cars). He told me that in automatic transmissions that are daily drivers, the fluid should NOT be changed, ever! The fluid with time gets filled with shavings and dust from the submerged clutchpack and keeps the shifting smooth. He said just take a peek at your fluid every so often, about every time you change your oil, make sure the level stays consistant over time(check with the motor on so that the torque converter/hydro pump is circulating) and that the fluid is pinkish. Once it goes brown, that's when you know your transmission burned out. Also, having rebuilt 700R4 transmissions, I can definitely support his claim.

There is a mixed feeling out there in the auto world. Some people say leave well enough alone and some say change the filter and fluid every 15k miles and some like to do the flush and everything. Makes you wanna do this -> :banghead:

03 gmc safari transmission fluid

:hand: The main reason why shavings collect in transmission fluid in the first place is because the fluid (and filter) need to be changed. Trans fluid in good condition will prevent mechanical damage. That's part of its job. Now, I don't recommend a complete flush every year. Flushes are only for cars that have been neglected. Changing the fliter and topping off the fluid once a year will get you by just fine. That's what I have always done with my own cars, my customers cars and (knock on wood) have never had a problem to date. I'm not sure what rebuilding 700R4s has to do with anything, newly rebuilt transmissions should have no wear. And I also understand that having the shavings from the clutch packs floating in the trans fluid can help older transmissions keep shifting, but the problem you run into is that those shavings may help fill the increased gaps in the clutch packs, those same shavings also screw up the operation of the valve body. Furthermore, if trans fluid was not meant to be changed based solely on the fact that the shavings would be required to operate the transmission in its later years, why was a magnet installed in the transmission pan? That magnet removes the debris from the trans fluid not allowing it to be reused by the clutch packs. Now, if you want to modify this argument to include ONLY high mileage, abused transmissions, then yes, I would never do any service to them. That is just an insurance claim waiting to happen. But to suggest that people not change their transmission filters at all is ridiculous. Really, that would be just like suggesting that no one should change their oil in their daily drivers.

So, 355 would you recommend a fluid & filter change on my '92 which shifts just fine, but a little harsh every once in awhile. 170K on the tranny. I was going to do it in the spring...but wonder if I should leave it alone? My Safari's tranny I will not touch...it has 204K miles on it and I would be affraid to ruin a good thing.

03 gmc safari transmission fluid

I've heard pretty much the same thing from most mechanics- It's best to change it at the proper intervals, however if it's been neglected, it's better to drive it until it fails because doing a fluid change or flush after.. say 100K miles, the new clean fluid could dislodge dirt, debris or metal shavings and it could get places where you don't want it. Say that one of the journals inside of the transmission has been collecting debris for quite some time yet it had not affected the operation of the transmission, as soon as you flush it, you essentially kick up all of that dirt and it starts to circulate. Thus it's better to try getting another 100K out of the transmission and replacing it later than having to replace it sooner as a result of servicing it.

But what you would have to remember is that you don't know when that trans would die if you just drove it. I would much rather replace the tranny because its my choice instead of my vehicle choosing for me. Click to expand...

Yes, I have a drain plug in mine. I originally put it there since the van was purchased used and I had no history of how it was driven. I changed the fluid and filter at 30,000 miles and installed the plug then. During the next 2 engine oil and filter changes, I would drain and fill the trans. using the drain plug. I called it a flush by dillution method sice I don't have access to a shop or fluid exchange unit. I now use it to drain the fluid before removing the pan to change the filter. It is soo much cleaner that way. It also makes it easier to adjust the fluid level in case it is overfilled and get it just right. In the past I have worked on a fleet of plow trucks and it was their policy to install a drain plug, then drain and fill the fluid at every engine oil change and do the filter anually. We still had a few "explode" leaving hard parts jammed eveywhere. But this was bound to happen anyway. :layrubber:

i have a 97 safari 206k with unknown history and questionable tranny fluid. it's definitely brownish than pinkish. assuming from the condition of its engine oil, it probably was neglected for awhile. it shifts ok although i wouldn't know how it was when new. it seems a bit slow and rough in shifting. it has no leak or bad smell. does tranny fluid change color over period of time not being driven? i'm not too convinced on "not touching it". or you guys stating it's near the end of its life anyways?

Can you see any debris in the fluid? With what you said, I would be included to leave it be. It's definitely not a guarantee that if you change the fluid, the trans will stop working but it would really suck if it did.

What I did was flush my transmission and replace the fluid with a high quality synthetic, Amsoil ATF. Once a year I change the filter and send in a sample for analysis. This allows me to monitor wear metals present. I will let analysis tell me when to flush again. In the meantime it performs flawlessly.

Thats all neat and all but flushes wouldn't be necessary if transmission filters were changed once a year. That's all that is required by GM.

no debris. but it's brown. the "servicing ended up in costly repair" has happened to me on my ex (van). i guess i'll just watch olympics.

210k here and have changed every 30k since new (original owner)filter and fluid. So far she shifts almost like new. I say preventive maintenance is way cheaper than a new tranny.

This is some of the goofiest advice I've heard, and a good example of the myths that abound about cars. I change fluid every other oil change (I put drain plugs in everything). Changing the filter is not nearly as important as changing the fluid, the filter is mainly a screen to keep larger particles from being drawn into the oil pump circuit. Some automatics don't even have one. If you guys want to drive around with worn-out, dirty oil, that's your business, but you'll have a hard time convincing me that it's the proper way to take care of your transmission.

I change mine every 10k and all 3 of my vans org trans and over 210k

forgot about this topic... since it's up, how would i go about gettin a better trany than the one hangin by a thread? besides the obvious: mileage, fluid color, smell, leak.... i've read relating threads. any trick?

I read this and had to call my Trans guy. He builds just Chevy trans for racing but also does rebuilds for street/strip applications. Has been doing trans for 32 years. He chuckled when I asked him. He said the ONLY time he would NOT change the fluid was if it was a high milage 200+ and was already having or had problems in the near past. He said the only exception would be to remove a quart and replace it with a conditioner that might stretch the life out a little longer, if it was on its way out. His theory was ... ALL vehicle fluids become contaminated, that why the ones that get dirty the fastest and soonest have filters. Filters are there to try and extend the life and efficiency of the fluid. Which I never really thought of before, but it makes sense. I have always replaced the fluid and filter every 2 years or 20K. I use Amsoil synthetic. a little expensive, but once every 2 years I think is justifiable. A remote trans cooler and havent had any issues.

my pickup has a 700R4 and when i bought it with 220,000 miles it came with a mile long maintenance records and i continued changing the trans fluid every 15k and that trans lasted until 260,000 and then the fluid was still like new pink and i only lost 3-4 gear still had R, 1, 2 and it still would light up the tires and i drove it to the trans shop just couldn't get over 35mph. and i believe in preventive maintenance so when every i get a new vehicle i change all the fluids never had any problems yet

Ok but lets not turn this into something that this thread isn't. If you have a transmission: -that is low mileage -with good, clean transmission fluid -and that you know the maintenance and/or history of, go ahead and do the maintenance on it. You should. But we're discussing old, abused transmissions that you have no idea of what the history is and looks like its running on molasses. If that's what you have, don't waste the time and possible headaches on changing or flushing the fluid just to find out that the transmission no longer works. I've seen it happen too many times and will probably see it again.

It still doesn't make any sense to me...if your fluid was dark and obviously tired, it might cost you $50 bucks to change it all, and you might get 50-100k out of the transmission, versus spending $800-2400 to get it rebuilt/replaced, depending on how you handled it. I bought a van with a "bad tranny" and it lasted 110,000 miles of really hard use before I had to replace it. By the same logic, if you got a vehicle with dark, worn out engine oil, would you not change it and just let the engine fail, or would you change it and hope the engine would last a while yet? I know what I would do. Transmissions don't fail til they fail, if it is working with dark oil, it may work indefinitely, but not if you don't change it and give it a chance. 200k is not necessarily an indicator that it's about to die, they can go much much farther than that.
