‘Elvis on Tour,’ a New Box Set, Offers an In-Depth Look at a 1972 Concert Series

elvis on tour box review

In 1972, though, Presley was still in relatively good shape. That’s when he delivered his last big pop hit (“Burning Love”), as well as a concert series that resulted in the bestselling album Elvis: As Recorded at Madison Square Garden and a Golden Globe-winning film, Elvis on Tour . A new seven-disc, 145-track boxed set that shares that film’s title offers a closer look at the concert series.

A follow-up to 2019’s gargantuan Elvis Live 1969 , the 2023 release features four complete April 1972 shows, three of which are previously unreleased. (The fourth, which has been remixed for this box, also appeared in a 2003 collection.) The anthology, which includes a 32-page booklet with essays and photos, also incorporates two discs’ worth of material from Presley’s rehearsal sessions for the tour.

Finally, the set embraces a Blu-ray edition of the hour-and-a-half-long Elvis on Tour film, which includes excellent footage of Presley’s early years in the music business but focuses mostly on the spring 1972 concert series with performance clips and offstage material.

The documentary—which is well-done, aside from the overuse of split screens—shows Presley enjoying himself and mostly performing well, though at times he appears to be just going through the motions. He seems particularly engrossed with the music when he’s offstage and singing just for fun, during which times he largely sticks to gospel material. (In fact, he won a Grammy in 1972 for a gospel album called He Touched Me .)

Presley deemphasizes his hit singles in these concerts, preferring to concentrate more on an ostensible attempt to update his image with covers of material by songwriters such as Paul Simon (“Bridge Over Troubled Water”), Mickey Newbury (“An American Trilogy”), Buffy Sainte-Marie (“Until It’s Time for You to Go”) and Kris Kristofferson (“For the Good Times”).

He does run through some of his early hits, but any concertgoer who made a brief trip to the lobby for popcorn might have missed most of them. In the Hampton, Virginia, show that fills the first disc of this box, for example, he features “Love Me,” “All Shook Up,” “(Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear,” “Don’t Be Cruel,” “Are You Lonesome Tonight?,” “I Can’t Stop Loving You,” “Hound Dog,” “Love Me Tender,” “A Big Hunk of Love” and “Can’t Help Falling in Love”—10 songs in a combined total of less than 18 minutes.

More recent chart successes also garner little attention. Though Presley didn’t capture top positions on the Billboard singles charts nearly as often in the late ’60s and early ’70s as he did in earlier years, he did score some big hits during this period: “Crying in the Chapel” (#3 in 1965), “Suspicious Minds,” “In the Ghetto” and “Don’t Cry, Daddy” (#1, 3 and 6, respectively, in 1969), “The Wonder of You,” “You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me, and “Kentucky Rain” (#9, 11 and 16, respectively, in 1970), and the aforementioned “Burning Love” (#2 in 1972). The shows in this boxed set, though, include only two of these eight songs: “Suspicious Minds” and “Burning Love,” the latter a song, originally performed by Arthur Alexander, that Presley’s label released about four months after the tour.

Even casual fans will likely find the film absorbing. The backstage material gives a good sense of what life on the road was like for Presley in 1972, and on many of the songs, his voice remains powerful, and his stage presence is still strong. The two discs of rehearsal material, which include candid moments and some songs that did not make it into the shows, are particularly interesting. That said, it would be difficult to argue that Presley’s glitzy, Las Vegas-styled, big-band act ever equals the electrifying nature of his 1950s and early 1960s work on Sun and RCA—or even the best parts of his famous 1969 TV “comeback special.”

Unless you’re an Elvis completist, moreover, you’ll likely find too much redundancy in these concert recordings, especially if you already own the Madison Square Garden release. Unlike, say, Bob Dylan, Presley rarely varied either his setlists or his approach to particular tunes. So, what we have here, at least on discs one through four, is mostly just four indistinguishable renditions of each of a couple dozen songs. In fact, some of these numbers also appear on the rehearsal recordings, so Elvis on Tour includes, for example, five performances of “Polk Salad Annie,” six of “See See Rider” and a whopping 14 of “For the Good Times.” It’s probably safe to say that, for most listeners, the good times will be over by the third or fourth version.

We Elvis fans are lucky since there is so much high-quality material and releases that cover Elvis’ stunning comeback in 1968 and the following glory years of Elvis' "return-to-splendour" live on stage.

The fantastic musical renaissance of the Memphis Sessions , the sensational footage and audio recordings of ‘That's The Way It Is’ in 1970, ‘Madison Square Garden’ in 1972 and the final all-conquering triumph of the taut-and-terrific Aloha special of 1973. These have all been well represented by official box-sets as well as deluxe photo books. The one noticeable gap in the SONY/EPE plethora of Elvis releases is any substantial look at the concerts that were filmed for MGM's documentary ‘Elvis On Tour’ in April 1972.

Over 15 years ago I asked Elvis producer Ernst Jorgensen when an official Elvis On Tour box-set might be coming out and at the time he had hoped it might be out within the year - and that was back in 2002. Of course it was always known that there were difficulties trying to combine the RCA release with an expanded MGM DVD.

However there were positive rumours and hopes that the 40th anniversary last year might have finally seen this box set released. But sadly it never happened.

Unsurprisingly with no official SONY 2017 release, the unofficial ‘Amiga International’ label have beaten them to it with an astounding Deluxe edition featuring a hardcover 132 page book plus NINE CDs. This is what Elvis collectors have been waiting for, for far too long.

On a personal note I also picked up this box set at the same time as FTD’s impressive book on ‘Change Of Habit’. Juxtaposed side by side they demonstrate Elvis’ extraordinary evolution both in style and in musical power over the three years. In the FTD book from April 1969 Elvis looks so young and innocent while recording such lightweight fare as 'Have A Happy ' and 'Let Us Pray' yet only three years later the same man has developed into this Rock’n’Roll God-like Icon who is completely at ease working with audiences of 20 thousand fans playing music packed with such power and emotion. No wonder our hero would soon start to burn out and fade.

As Alan Hanson notes in his new book ‘Elvis The Movies’ – "‘Elvis On Tour’ showed Elvis near the top of his game - but it would be the last such experience most of us would ever have. Seeing him on the screen, it’s hard to believe that Elvis Presley would be dead just five short years later.”

This well put-together book perfectly captures the glory of that On Tour period. Along with the FOUR concerts that were recorded by RCA (only one of which, San Antonio, that has been officially released in the last 45 years!)  the Deluxe set also includes four packed CDs of rehearsals plus as a bonus a single disc of relevant interviews. While it does not include any DVDs, from an audio point of views this is the best we have ever seen so far. OK, there is the real disappointment that Elvis’ stunning HAMPTON ROADS concert is not complete as it is missing one song (Never Been To Spain). However RCA /SONY have still not released that complete concert in the last 45 years and this box-set DOES include THREE new rehearsal tracks that have never been released anywhere before, officially or on bootleg.

The Package. The package is beautifully presented as a hard-cover book within a solid hard-cover sleeve. The over package is 13 inches, bigger than most sets and which matches the height of ‘The Complete Masters’ giant deluxe box. My initial thought was that while impressive both SONY’s Deluxe sets for ‘Young Man With The Big Beat’ and ‘TTWII’ did not come with hard-cover books.

The cover is stunning – (I do not have a scanner big enough, pics will have to do)  - with no lettering to spoil the sensational shot and the book is 132 pages. Again the book is substantially bigger than SONY’s ‘Young Man With The Big Beat’ and ‘TTWII’ both with 82 pages.

If nothing else this AMIGA set truly raises the bar for SONY in what they have to do for any future ‘Elvis On Tour’ presentation.

THE BOOK The design is very nice and clean with a clear similarity to the style of the SONY Deluxe TTWII book. However while the TTWII book featured only one essay and lots of tracklistings, this AMIGA book features more than 20 articles, lengthy discussions and reviews plus the 1972 interview with John Wilkinson.

There is no doubt that this project must have been in production for a lengthy time – and I presume the team waited to see whether  SONY would announced On Tour for a 2017 release.

The book features six chapters. -- The Introduction / Write Up - three pages -- The RCA mock Session and Rehearsal - seven pages -- The Buffalo rehearsal - four pages -- Elvis On Tour - 114 pages ... All the concerts from Buffalo, New York April 5 to Albuquerque, New Mexico April 19th. -- Interview with John Wilkinson - two pages -- Tour Map & details. - Six pages.

The book's Introduction or Overview sets the scene. Rather oddly this chapter is called “Write up” which points to the book being written by a European which is also alluded to later in some formal grammar noticeable in the prose. Not to say that the book is not well written and extremely thorough in its presentation.

There is an interesting discussion about the RCA rehearsals as well as the Buffalo rehearsal which we find out was actually in the nightclub of the Hilton hotel.  Previously I had always considered that it was also in a proper studio space.

The section most fans will delight in is of course the 114 pages dedicated to all the April On Tour concerts . I was amazed by how many photos were new to my eyes.

I have Erik Lorentzen’s splendid ‘Elvis Files 1971-1973’ but that has less than 40 pages of photos from the same period.

Here we get 14 photos of Elvis in his ‘Red Burning Love’ suit from Hampton Roads April 9, 2.30pm show whereas Elvis Files only featured one photo from that concert.

In this section there are over 45 truly impressive full-page photos with a mix of colour and black and white. Similarly the Richmond concert – again Elvis in his ‘Burning Love’ suit – features a splendid 17 colour photos and with three of them full-page.

Throughout the book there are neat surprises and unexpected photos. The Greensboro concert features several full page photos of Elvis in his ‘Blue-Owl’ suit but also included are some very detailed close-up shots of Elvis’ suit from that night, including that famous belt – “In case you can’t see from the back, this is an owl!”    (see below)

It’s all very stylish and with such an impact due to the stunning size – as you can see from these photos with CD covers as a size comparison.

The MUSIC The last Elvis concert I listened to is usually the last one released by FTD or reviewed for EIN. It seems that I have been stuck with Elvis’ generic post 1972 concert set-list for the last three years. How many times can one really hear those standard first few songs and JD dive-bomber and still be enthused? In February 1973 Elvis began his ‘See See Rider/ I Got A Woman – Amen / Love Me Tender’ generic start to his concerts and by August 1973 he had settled in to his standard  ‘See See Rider/ I Got A Woman – Amen / Love Me’ routine. It became inevitable that the concert highlights and excitements would appear in the second half of the show, often after he truly “woke up”.

So WELL, WELL, WELL , what a genuine delight it is hearing these four April 1972 concerts after such a long time. Elvis had energy and could truly surprise and lay on a powerful emotional ride of a concert performance. (Even if we now know he was suffering emotional stress from his split with Priscilla at the time).

Putting the four concerts in a CD stacker (yes, I still have one!) and letting them play one after another is a real treat and surprisingly not that repetitive. Elvis throws in little idiosincrocies into each show and they each do have a different feel and excitement.

The pacing is nice and varied and none of them have that rushed feel of the eventually released Madison Square Garden.

All four concerts deserve to be officially released by SONY / FTD and I suspect that in the long run they will be, but after 45 years how long do we have to wait?

The audio on every CD has been re-mastered, most of them showing improvements that 2017 mastering can bring with fuller bass and brighter top-end. The true surprise for me is the improvement in Elvis’ Richmond concert which now does sound “Red Hot” unlike the earlier Madison bootleg that sounded very hollow and cassette-like. Even the San Antonio concert has more sparkle and power than the official BMG 2003 release though, as the mix is identical, this is probably due to more compression and equalisation than being a different source tape.

While every concert could easily be worthy of being examined song-by song, here is a brief look at each performance CD.

Hampton Roads - April 9, 1972 - 8.30pm show This was the seventh concert of the tour. It has been out on bootleg for decades and is surely a favourite of collectors. Elvis’ performance is full of a real power and excitement, which is quite a surprise as he had already performed an afternoon show. Along with Elvis’ TTWII August 12, 1970 midnight show this is one of Elvis best ever performances recorded by RCA.

As on previous releases it is disappointing that three songs are missing from the main recording. ‘Never Been To Spain’ doesn’t exist but the two tracks 'I Got A Woman' and 'You Gave Me A Mountain ’ are featured at the end of the CD presumably taken from the Blu-ray.

However having the concert start with ‘See See Rider’ straight to ‘Until It's Time For You To Go’ (Elvis’ latest single) and then ‘Polk Salad Annie’ is so unusual it’s easy to like.

The whole concert is superb but highlights are a fabulous 'Polk Salad Annie' performed early in the show with a great wah-wah guitar from James Burton and power-packed ending. Elvis is really into it, ”do it to me, come on" he tells The Sweets. 'Are You Lonesome Tonight?' (only performed twice in the whole of 1972) is one of Elvis’ best-ever performances, sincere and with no joking around for once. ‘American Trilogy’ is the probably Elvis’ all-time best performance and that infamous shriek from the crowd during "All My Trials" says it all. Fantastic.

Other treats are the 'How Great Thou Art' / 'Sweet Sweet Spirit ' double and the brilliant 'Lawdy, Miss Clawdy' also included in the movie.

I also love Elvis announcing "Release Me" but then heading straight into ‘I Can't Stop Loving You' a unique touch.

Audio quality: I do not have the old Triangle bootleg which supposedly had the best audio so far (sadly I cannot afford to buy everything Elvis) but the audio here is very rich and gives the concert the power that it needs. It is mono, as all previous releases have been, and there is a noticeable hum in the background. However this is such a vast improvement on my previous copy that I cannot stop playing it.

Richmond The very next day, Elvis had travelled to Richmond and put on another very fine show. The previous release on Madison always sounded pretty thin and cassette like but this Amiga version is very fine indeed- and in stereo. Once again Elvis is ready to rock for the cameras and his ever-loving fans.

Unlike the previous evening Elvis goes from 'See See Rider' straight into a fabulous & funky 'Proud Mary' before saying ‘Good Evening’ and then immediately to a cool 'Never Been To Spain', “Only made it to Virginia” Elvis nicely adlibs! Newly introduce to his set list in January 1972 the ‘On Tour’ versions of 'You Gave Me A Mountain' are enjoyable for being less O-T-T than in later concerts. 'Until It's Time For You To Go' is the version from ‘Elvis On Tour’ movie where you can see Elvis playing with his microphone.

Elvis again rocks on ‘Polk Salad Annie' afterwards rolling onto his back on the stage to calm down. “That’s a funny looking thing up there, I hope that think don’t fall. I’d be flatter than a pancake!”

At the start of ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water' Elvis messes around “Hang loose baby” before getting serious. His mic also cuts out right at the start. Astounding drumming from Ronnie Tutt.

The rarely performed ‘It's Over' is also a highlight from this show, the only time Elvis performed it in the tour. This is odd as Elvis announces, ”This song is a favourite of mine”.

A lovely and tender 'For The Good Times' is followed by a powerful ‘I Can't Stop Loving You' in the second half with a fine 'American Trilogy' (if not up to Hampton Roads).

As on the Madison the very start of a magnificent 'Lawdy Miss Clawdy' is missing, "You’re on your own, Baby”. This would be great to have complete.

Towards the end Elvis sings “Carry Me Back to Old Virginie” and notes “I was here 14 years ago man, when I was a baby!”

A fine ‘Funny How Time Slips Away’ “How, am I doing?… Well I’m sweating a lot!” features some very cool piano-work from Glen Hardin. So overall while not up to the energy of the previous night in Hampton this is still a very fine show. Audio Quality: This is a real treat from AMIGA, in stereo and with great quality master. While not from multitrack this is a leap in quality from the very cassette-sounding Madison release and at last does sound “Red Hot In Richmond”!

Greensboro Four evenings later and Elvis is playing to one of the biggest crowds of the tour 16,000 fans and still working hard. This mix is again ‘back to mono’ but with better clarity than the Triangle bootleg of old.

A powerful ‘Proud Mary’ gets the crowd moving while 'Never Been To Spain' is another very fine version. (Elvis has mic feedback issues several times in this show).  Elvis also sings a real rockin 'Big Hunk ‘O Love' a song introduced at the start of 1972.

Again there are plenty of treats, the ‘EOT’ movie included the deliciously paced ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ as well as ‘Funny How Time Slips Away’ and the great line “Sneakin' up on me, man” from a very fine ‘Suspicious Minds’.

Also in the film ‘An American Trilogy’ hits a heartfelt chord with his southern audience and is another superlative performance of this great song. The way Elvis raises and lowers the power of his voice at critical moments is amazing to listen to.

The most important song this night would however be the very first concert performance of 'Burning Love.' “We’re gonna’ spring a new song on you tonight, we don’t know it too well. If we goof it up just bear with us”. James Burton’s plays some cutting lead guitar and Ronnie Tutt pounds the drums. Elvis works hard but doesn’t quite pull it off. San Antonio – the second attempt would feature in the film. Still a great first version, the mess of the ending is a treat - and the crowd love it. Little did they know it would make #1.

Finally ‘Funny How Time Slips Away’ has to be noted for its wonderful Elvis line describing his belt, “For those of you that can’t see back there this is an owl” ! It’s a lovely ending.

Audio Quality: A mono version with the same mix as the past Triangle bootleg so presumably taken from the same tape, however this AMIGA version is brighter with more top-end - Tutt’s percussion shines here – and is a noticeable improvement. Madison did release a “stereo” version but there was always something odd about it and it almost sounded fake.

San Antonio The last recorded RCA concert, the penultimate show of the tour and two weeks since the first Buffalo concert. Elvis had performed 17 energy draining concerts in the previous 15 days. This is the only ‘On Tour’ concert officially released so far, as part of the very fine ‘Close Up’ box-set.  I was always a little disappointed by the sound of that release as the audio lacked punch whereas this AMIGA version sounds great. Of course this could be just the use of more compression but again here there is more top-end and Ronnie Tutt’s cymbals sound nice and crisp. It is in stereo.

The two graphs below showing 'Until It's Time For You To Go' audio resolution with the AMIGA version at the top, easily show the difference between the audio mastering of the two versions.

Tonight Elvis was in ‘business mode’ and delivers the goods. While perhaps the lower-key performance of the four RCA recorded concerts Elvis still had an energy and commitment that would soon diminish. Tonight Elvis hardly talked to the crowd and concentrated on the music.

‘Proud Mary’ was featured in the ‘On Tour’ movie, Elvis comments "bring that bass up!" and they do. A deliciously juicy mix emphasising Jerry Scheff’s funky bass work. You can really hear the band slowly build up and up as Elvis pumps the crowd. This was going to be a great night!

‘Never Been To Spain ’ was also included in the film and it another great version. (I love the pacing of all these shows).  And ‘Polk’ gets another fabulous work-out.

‘For The Good Times’ (rehearsed so many times) has the crowd exploding with excitement at the start of this new song. There is a great clarity to the mix and you can imagine yourself right on stage with Elvis & Charlie Hodge duetting. There is a lovely space to the sound giving a fabulous glimpse to Elvis’ power as he holds sway over the audience of 10,500.

‘How Great Thou Art’ "We’d like to do a gospel song for you…"  is another great version. One has to wonder why Elvis would drop this absolute stunner from his ‘Madison Square Garden’ set just 2 months later. This version is at a slower tempo and the spacious mix helps emphasise Elvis’ belief and love for gospel music.

The classic track again is ‘Burning Love’ - Elvis announces " We’d like to do a new song for you tonight, and if we goof this up just bear with us … Burnin’ Love, baby!" As featured in the movie, remember Elvis holding the lyric sheet? Elvis had recorded it less than a month earlier and this great version was only the second time that he had performed it live. The crowd must have been stunned as they would have never heard this classic before – amazingly it wasn’t to be released for another 4 months.

The penultimate ‘Funny How Time’ ends with Elvis cutely joking about hitting the last note, “think I can’t hit that note... watch this”.

The CD wraps up with “Elvis has left the building” and Al Dvorin suggesting fans go and buy their Elvis souvenirs at the concession stands.

It’s the perfect reason to start playing the first Hampton concert all over again!

Audio Quality: For some odd reason the original BMG official version sounded a little flat. If AMIGA have ripped this version from the BMG version (the mix is the same) then they have done a fine job improving the sound including adding more brightness that wasn’t there before. More compression helps it rock-out like the other three concerts.

The Rehearsals. If you own the previous Madison bootlegs you know what to expect. If however these rehearsals are new to you, you will have your mind blown!

March 27th-29th 1972 found Elvis in the new environment of RCA's Hollywood Studio C recording some innovative single material including 'Burning Love', 'Always On My Mind' and 'Separate Ways'. The very next day the film crew for 'Elvis On Tour' also arrived to film his “Mock” concert rehearsals. With rehearsals beginning in earnest the next day.

The real surprise is that these rehearsals are SO focussed and with little joking around. Concert rehearsals frequently seem flat due to the lack of audience feedback but here Elvis gives it his all and this session often sounds like a genuine recording for 'Standing Room Only' the studio LP version!

The genuine treats here are to get songs like 'Never Been To Spain', 'Release Me', 'See See Rider' and the sensational 'Johnny B. Goode' as "studio versions" and without any orchestra backing or overdubs. Elvis often takes the songs at a slower pace than he would on stage which also gives a more relaxed, sincere feel to the songs, especially the ballads.

The “best of” these rehearsals were released on the 2004 'Elvis On Tour – The Rehearsals' FTD cd. For some reason the AMIGA audio, in general, sounds better the FTD release which sounded “thinner”. The audio mix is different on the RCA official released songs. This AMIGA set must be taken from the same tape as the previous Madison bootlegs.

CD1 - The Mock Up Studio Session (March 30, 1972) The first rehearsal CD kicks off with some great run-throughs of the just recorded new song ‘Burning Love’  - none officially released as yet. These are cute being more laid-back, basically drums, piano and bass, than the later rocking versions. Seven attempts at another new song ‘For the Good Times ’ follow. The mix is fabulous and so good to hear without unnecessary 1970's orchestral overdubs. There are also some truly beautiful a cappella practises with Elvis and backing vocals alone.

Of course the treat on all these rehearsals is listening in on Elvis and the band working towards a “rhythm-section” arrangement that they would use on stage. There’s also plenty of banter and musicians jamming together to enjoy plus a few gem one-liners such as ‘El Paso ’ and ’Oh, How I Love Jesus’.

'Johnny B Goode' is the absolute gem here and while so associated with the ‘EOT’ movie Elvis never actually sang it at any of the recorded concerts. Compared to the speedy 1969 'In Person' release, or even Aloha, this is Elvis at his best. We also get two false starts as they adjust the mix. This was the version used on the credits of the 'On Tour' film but that was brutal edited down to only 1½ minutes. Here you hear the full version which ends with a satisfying "Whoo, oohh" from Elvis. Brilliant.

The session concludes with run throughs of 'Always On My Mind' all of them beautiful rehearsals along with some joking “tell me that your sweet ass hasn’t died” what a sin Elvis never added it to his set-list.

‘Separate Ways' follows, the version you get a taste of in the 'On Tour' movie. Written by Red West (RIP) this so suited Elvis' mood at the time as he was obviously grieving the recent loss of Priscilla. This version has just the right feeling of solitude & confusion.

CDs 2 & 3 Rehearsal at RCA´s Studio C, Hollywood, California. March 31, 1972. Part 1 Onto serious rehearsals without cameras filming - forty-two great tracks. Starting with great run-throughs of ‘Proud Mary’, ‘Never Been To Spain’, ‘You Gave Me A Mountain’ (false starts), ‘Until It´s Time For You To Go’ and ‘Polk Salad Annie’ “how long you been up Ronnie?” this is a brilliant two hours of eavesdropping on Elvis and the band hard at work.

‘Until It's Time for You To Go’ added to Elvis set-list at the start of the year  is such a charming, delicate, version. Elvis sings "You're not a dream, You're a woman, Lord I Hope so!" which is a nice touch. Put your headphones on and let Elvis sing a 'concert' song just to you alone- delicious!

'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face' (not performed live in ‘Elvis On Tour’) and 'Help Me Make It Through the Night' (only at the Hampton Roads afternoon show) are similarly smooth and intimate and different to the original studio releases - and great to have here as they are missed from the LIVE performances.

With 'See See Rider', 'A Big Hunk O' Love', Lawdy Miss Clawdy and even ' Young and Beautiful' rehearsed here and without the addition of an orchestra this  is an essential set for anyone’s collection.

While around half of the tracks have been released officially across various CDs here we get the complete versions and studio discussion plus different mixes. It seems only a possibility that this complete set will get an official release.

The CD ends with the glorious Gospel set fans will know from the movie including ‘The Lighthouse’ (not yet officially released), ‘I John’, ‘Bosom Of Abraham’, ‘You Better Run’ and the wonderful ‘Lead Me, Guide Me’. Here we get the full unedited recordings.

A marvellous way to end – Elvis did indeed “Sing - and rehearse - All Kinds”

CD 4 - Rehearsal in Buffalo, at the Hilton Statler Hotel, April 5, 1972 For hard-core collectors this complete rehearsal from Buffalo, NY – right before the first concert of the tour – is a delight. With nothing from it officially released, this also features three new tracks never released anywhere before not even on bootleg.

The audio / mix at the start is very poor, Elvis is sometimes off-mic or distorted, but it does improve. There are also some movie production comments at times.

The CD starts with true eavesdropping as people arrive and say ‘Hello’. Later on Elvis questions an arrangement saying, “Shit, where do we put it?” then apologising to the sound recordist changing to “Doo-Doo, where do we put it” . Then he depreciatingly laughs and notes, “Thirty-seven year old man saying 'doo-doo'! "   It’s all very fine stuff.

One of my very first boots featured Elvis singing 'You Gave Me A Molehill' so it’s great to have that here and the audio quality has somewhat improved by now. Elvis’ mic is out front of the band and he’s having fun, “She took my ray of sunshine, the dirty son-of-a bitch!” I remember at the time being so STUNNED that there were any recordings of Elvis rehearsing at all and so now I realise how spoilt we Elvis fans are.

Interestingly there’s a brief rehearsal of ‘I'll Remember You’ cut short and Elvis notes “I doing this ‘cos Lamar’s here”. Elvis would only add this to his set-list for Madison Square Garden in June.

The real highlights start with the three previously unreleased tracks. Even the ‘Hound Dog’ rehearsal is fun with Elvis throwing in some aside to the musicains such as “Talk to me” to James Burton’s chickin’-picking lead. The quality has improved here. ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ rehearsal is fascinating with Elvis’ voice is way up-front and it is almost a capella with a little piano from Glen Hardin. Unreleased ‘A Big Hunk O Love ’ is also a fine jam.

‘I Can't Stop Loving You’ is a cool work-out again with Elvis’ vocal out front.

My favourite is ‘American Trilogy’ – isn’t this the only rehearsal we have of this without an orchestra? Again Elvis’ vocal is very prominent – again almost a capella at times. The joy is when they get to the flute solo Elvis has to ask Charlie Hodge to whistle it causing much amusement. However this doesn’t distract Elvis from his serious power-ending. Just fabulous, the band rightly applaud Elvis afterwards.

After a fine run-through of Funny How Time Slips Away’ the rehearsal ends with another Gospel run-through. It includes ‘I, John’ (from the movie) as well as Elvis singing a couple of lines from ‘The Lighthouse’. Afterwards people bid goodbye saying “See you at the show”.

Interview CD The final ‘Bonus CD’ nicely rounds up this amazing with over 65 minutes of interviews recorded by On Tour directors Pierre Adidge and Robert Abel. Listening to the  camaraderie and honesty shared between Elvis and the two directors  is a treat.

Elvis talks about his musical background, influences, Gospel music, hiring The Stamps “some of the best voices in the world” and a lot more. Elvis notes, “Ending the night by singing Gospel puts my mind at ease”.

In the second interview Elvis discusses the old times, one-nighters and working with the Blue Moon Boys, his first performance at the Memphis Overton Shell – how “Bill Black could slap the bass creating a wild sound like jungle drums”.

Elvis talks about being a child, the Tupelo talent show contest also about his 11th grade school Talent show and how he sang Teresa Brewer’s ''Till I Waltz With You Again'.

It’s an incredible story of a young Tupelo kid who he admits “was still shy and wouldn’t sing in public” to the all-conquering ‘Elvis On Tour’ icon.

Overall Verdict: This is an incredible, all-encompassing Deluxe presentation of ‘Elvis On Tour’ in pictures and sound. SONY will never release a project as big as this. This a box-set that any Elvis fan would be excited to own and is a true collectable. Of course a large amount of the audio content has been out on previous separate bootlegs but those were a decade ago and now AMIGA have re-mastered them in even better audio. With such a large-size format the Deluxe hard-bound book is a stunner - and with over nine hours of music to go with it, how can it fail? While it would have been wonderful to have Hampton Roads complete and in stereo we know that SONY will release this in future – but how many years do we still have to wait? Meanwhile AMIGA do release Elvis’ fabulous Richmond concert in the best quality audio we have ever heard.   After a 45 year wait for a fitting ‘Elvis On Tour’ official release, AMIGA have beat them to it with the best Deluxe release since FTD’s 2012 ‘Boy From Tupelo’. 1972 was Elvis' last power-packed year performing on stage before it all started to become a little routine. This Amiga Deluxe set truly captures that magic, buy it now before it sells out.

SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: ELVIS PRESLEY – ELVIS ON TOUR

Elvis Presley

Elvis Presley Elvis On Tour RCA/Sony

From January 1972 through to November 1972, Elvis Presley performed 96 concerts in 15 cities, which included his famous and quite frankly, triumphant shows at Madison Square Garden. Several of the shows were recorded and filmed. The film Elvis On Tour,   which featured segments supervised by Martin Scorsese, debuted in November of 1972 and became the only Presley film to win an award (it won a Golden Globe for best documentary). There was no soundtrack and the only concerts released were the shows performed and recorded at Madison Square Garden. That has been corrected with this seven-disc set. Four CDs of concerts, two CDs of rehearsals, and one DVD of the classic Elvis On Tour .

A couple of things come to mind when listening to this box set. Elvis seems to be enjoying himself. He has fun with the songs, which can be heard in the rehearsals, and has fun with his audience. The other thing that one notices is that he did not use these shows to promote his current albums. In fact, many of the songs he performs on stage were never recorded by Presley in the studio, or at least released during his life on his studio albums. In fact, in 1972 (during this tour), Presley had one of his biggest hits, “Burning Love” but was only performed a handful of times during the tour. The rehearsals are quite interesting, by the way, to hear Presley grapple with a new song. “Here we go,” says Presley. This is quickly followed with “wait, wait, I lost…” The live version of the song in this collection (Live at Greensboro Coliseum, Greensboro, NC – April 14, 1972) is actually exciting and brilliant. Again, the excitement comes through very clearly.

This is what makes this box set so wonderful–hearing Elvis with his rocking and swampy version of “Polk Salad Annie” and his lovely rendition of “Bridge Over Troubled Water”. He is singing what he loves and clearly making the sets full of songs he wants to sing.  Of course some of his hits are here (“Hound Dog”, Heartbreak Hotel”, “All Shook Up”, “I Can’t Help Falling In Love With You”, “Suspicious Minds”) but this is not a ‘greatest hits’ show. Quite the opposite. It is exciting hearing Presley take on “Never Been To Spain” or “Proud Mary” or even “Until It’s Time For You To Go”, which was featured on his then current studio album Elvis Now , and was a top 40 hit for him. And of course, the majesty of “American Trilogy” is stunning.  “See See Rider” may just be the greatest concert opener of all time. It just works after the over the top intro of “Also Sprach Zarathustra (Theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey )” which opened all of his concerts.

This new box set of previously unreleased concerts and rehearsals demonstrates that Presley was a strong live performer. He had a tight band and excellent backing singers and the songs were arranged beautifully. There is also an element of fun on stage and the crowds certainly enjoyed themselves. Casual fans may find the additional rehearsals a bit much, he does rehearse “For The Good Times” a lot) but these rehearsals provide an insight into his creative process and just how much Presley did in terms of arranging and producing his music. Elvis On Tour is an important document of an historic tour. It is great to have complete concerts included and again, the differences in the shows are interesting. Songs added and dropped as the tour rolled on. Presley toured a great deal in the 1970s, and there are some fantastic concerts during those tours as well, but the 1972 tour stands as the year Presley got back out on the road and had something to prove. He succeeded and Elvis On Tour shows you why.

Albums Of The Week: Elvis Presley | Elvis On Tour

The King is back in the building with this massive box set documenting his 1972 tour.

elvis on tour box review

T HE EDITED PRESS RELEASE: “As Elvis Presley ’s national tour played to sold-out secondary markets across the country in 1972, Elvis was enjoying himself onstage and finding electrifying new ways of connecting to audiences at every show. Working with a band and set lists of his choosing, Elvis was channeling the music he loved most — from pop and gospel and traditional country to blues and rock and contemporary hits — while transforming his own greatest hits with fresh arrangements, turning nostalgia into an unforgettable concert experience packed with immediacy.

Award-winning filmmakers Pierre Adidge and Robert Abel ( Mad Dogs & Englishmen ) went on the road with Presley and his band with all-access passes, cameras and crew to chronicle the King of rock ’n’ roll at his onstage peak in MGM ’s Elvis On Tour documentary film. The film captures Elvis — the human being driving the myth — behind the scenes and backstage with his eyes open and his defenses down. According to the original press release, the Elvis On Tour film “offers the first intimate look at the enigmatic country boy who became the world’s most celebrated musician.” The documentary featured montage sequences supervised by Martin Scorsese . The film was released on Nov. 1, 1972.

Now, 50 years later, the new Elvis On Tour box celebrates Presley’s monumental 1972 concert trek with a multitude of previously unreleased Elvis concert performances and studio rehearsals. The seven-disc set includes six audio CDs and a Blu-ray edition of Elvis On Tour , winner of Best Documentary at the 30th Golden Globes Awards in 1973 and the last feature starring Presley to be released during the artist’s lifetime.

The Elvis On Tour box was produced by Ernst Mikael Jørgensen and mixed by Grammy -winning Memphis producer Matt Ross-Spang . The original recordings were made by Felton Jarvis and Al Pachucki .

Disc 1 was recorded live on April 9, 1972, at Hampton Roads Coliseum , Hampton, Va., and contains all previously unreleased material.

Disc 2 was recorded live on April 10, 1972, at Richmond Coliseum , Richmond, Va., and contains all previously unreleased material.

Disc 3 was recorded live on April 14, 1972, at Greensboro Coliseum , Greensboro, N.C., and contains all previously unreleased material.

Disc 4 was recorded live on April 18, 1972, at Convention Center Arena , San Antonio, Texas, and includes previously released material (from 2003’s Elvis: Close-Up box), remixed for this release.

Disc 5 features tour rehearsals, recorded live at RCA Recording Studios in Hollywood, on March 30 and 31, 1972. The disc is comprised primarily of previously unreleased tracks in addition to performances previously available on the collector’s releases Elvis On Tour – The Rehearsals (2004) and 6363 Sunset Boulevard (2001) as well as The Great Performances (1990).

Disc 6 completes Elvis’ rehearsals with his band at RCA Recordings Studios with performances recorded March 31, 1972. The disc includes previously unreleased takes on Kris Kristofferson ’s For The Good Times as well as performances previously available only on 6363 Sunset Boulevard, Elvis On Tour – The Rehearsals and Amazing Grace (1994).

The Elvis On Tour box includes fascinating behind-the-scenes liner notes by Jerry Schilling , a longtime personal friend and member of Presley’s inner circle.

The set also features an illuminating essay by rock historian/musician Warren Zanes , founding member of The Del Fuegos and professor at New York University . According to Zanes: “The set lists and the performances of the Elvis On Tour period bring a rare thing: A ’50s legend working in the early ’70s who was still taking his audiences to new places … The core band, including Ronnie Tutt , James Burton , Glen D. Hardin , Jerry Scheff , John Wilkinson , Charlie Hodge , The Sweet Inspirations , J.D. Sumner and The Stamps Quartet , and an orchestra led by Joe Guercio , had gotten to a place at which Elvis could inject spontaneity, allowing the arena shows to have a measure of the unexpected … 1972 was a year of 165 performances. In Jorgensen’s words, it was a ‘climax of his career.’ While the ’68 Comeback Special marked the significant point at which Presley returned to live performance, 1972 was the year in which the artist revealed most completely what he wanted to do with the creative energy such a return kicked off.”

On Tour Deluxe Edition

elvis on tour box review

Totally unexpected the announcement of the boxset On Tour – Deluxe Edition by Amiga International showed up just before last Christmas. My first thoughts were “again??”, now did those thoughts change after I have seen and heard the product?

The design is beautiful, the book has 130 pages of delight for the eyes. Everything looks perfect: the paper quality, the printing quality, the font choice, the balance between text and pictures and the colours. The book comes in a box-sleeve which has one little minor: the front of the book gets a bit pale because of the sliding. The first four CDs are attached to the front cover and the back holds the four live shows. The CDs are attached firmly and doesn’t fall out all the time. The 9th (bonus, interview) CD is attached to the last page, another little minor, because the page got a bit puckered by it.

Even with those little minors this is one of the best presented Elvis-products I have seen, EVER.

Amiga International did release On Tour material in the early 1980s on vinyl, there is even a picture of it in the book. I don’t know if it are the same people behind it, but they did fit the shoe!

The book starts with an intro (write-up) of the movie and then all the material gets into the spotlight chronologically: the (mock) recording session, the rehearsals in LA and at “The Rendezvous”, all decorated with pictures and memorabilia.

After these “introductions” the main content fires off: every single show is listed and not only with basic information like location, attendance, showtime, suit, setlist and musicians. Every shows has pictures of Elvis in action, memorabilia like tickets, announcements and newspaper clippings and reviews from the time.

Among the pictures there were quite some I never saw before (but then again, I am not a “picture tiger” like some others, but my memory still serves me well).

As dessert we get an interview Tony Prince did with John Wilkinson during the “Destination USA” tour of the British fanclub in September 1972, the tour map with pictures of all venues, some more newspaper clippings and an overview of the cast and crew.

The material is almost all well known by most of us. The sound of the mock up studio session and LA rehearsals is great. There is no new material here. There is some unreleased material in the Buffalo rehearsal: Hound dog, Bridge over Troubled Water and A Big Hunk. The sound of this rehearsal is way less, especially when you listen it straight after the first few CDs. After a bit you get used to it and it  turns out to be not bad after all. All the goofing and fooling around is fun to hear and in between Elvis did some serious work too.

It sounds like Amiga did pump up “the highs” a little bit, which gives the concerts a clearer feel. The Madison releases (Richmond, Greensboro) were my favourites among the many outings of these shows over the years. I played parts of them back to back with the versions on this set and that was about the difference I heard. It is only a slight difference, but it depends on personal taste whether you think it’s better or not.

All together I can only make a very deep bow for the people behind this product. It is a dedicated work of art, indeed long overdue. I saw people complaining about the price already, saying they’ll wait for a product like this by FTD. I can assure you this: if FTD will release a product like this, they won’t level it and it will be at least as expensive as this one. It is a 130 page book with 9 CDs after all!

To answer my question from the first paragraph: Yes my thoughts changed. I for one am happy that Amiga International took the time to collect this wonderful material in one product! Verdict: 11 out of 10!

-

Elvis Presley - Never Been To Spain (Live at Richmond Coliseum)

A seven-disc set, with the audio selections available in digital and physical configurations, the Elvis On Tour box set includes six audio discs (premiering previously unreleased Elvis concert performances and studio rehearsals) and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's Blu-ray edition of the MGM Film, 'Elvis On Tour,' winner of Best Documentary Film at the 30th Golden Globes Awards in 1973 and the last feature film starring Elvis Presley to be released during the artist's lifetime.

RCA/Legacy's Elvis On Tour box set is produced by Ernst Mikael Jørgensen and mixed by Grammy Award®-winning Memphis-based producer Matt Ross-Spang. The original recordings were made by Felton Jarvis and Al Pachucki.

Disc 1 was recorded live on April 9, 1972, at Hampton Roads Coliseum, Hampton, Virginia, and contains all previously unreleased material.

Disc 2 was recorded live on April 10, 1972, at Richmond Coliseum, Richmond, Virginia, and contains all previously unreleased material.

Disc 3 was recorded live on April 14, 1972, at Greensboro Coliseum, Greensboro, North Carolina, and contains all previously unreleased material.

Disc 4 was recorded live on April 18, 1972, at Convention Center Arena, San Antonio, Texas, and includes previously released material (from 2003's Elvis: Close-Up box set), remixed for this release.

Disc 5 features the tour rehearsals, recorded live at RCA Recording Studios in Hollywood, California, on March 30 and 31, 1972. The disc is comprised primarily of previously unreleased tracks in addition to performances previously available on the official Elvis Presley collector's releases Elvis On Tour – The Rehearsals ( Follow That Dream CD 2004) and 6363 Sunset Boulevard (Follow That Dream CD 2001) as well as The Great Performances (RCA 1990).

Elvis On Tour 6 CD + 1 Blu-ray box set (Elvis Presley)

Disc 6 completes Elvis' rehearsals with his band at RCA Recordings Studios with performances recorded March 31, 1972. The disc includes previously unreleased takes on Kris Kristofferson's 'For The Good Times' as well as performances previously available only on 6363 Sunset Boulevard, Elvis On Tour – The Rehearsals and Amazing Grace (RCA 2CD 1994).

As Elvis Presley's national tour played to sold-out secondary markets across the country in 1972, Elvis was enjoying himself on-stage and finding electrifying new ways of connecting to audiences at every show. Working with a band and set lists of his choosing, Elvis was channeling the music he loved most–from pop and gospel and traditional country to blues and rock and contemporary hits–while transforming his own greatest hits with fresh arrangements, turning nostalgia into an unforgettable concert experience packed with immediacy.

Award-winning filmmakers Pierre Adidge and Robert Abel (Mad Dogs & Englishmen) went on the road with Elvis Presley and his band with all-access passes, cameras and crew to chronicle the King of Rock & Roll at his on-stage peak in MGM's Elvis On Tour documentary film. The film captures Elvis, the human being driving the myth, behind-the-scenes backstage with his eyes open and his defenses down. According to MGM's original press release, the Elvis On Tour film 'offers the first intimate look at the enigmatic country boy who became the world's most celebrated musician'. Both documentary and concert film, Elvis On Tourfeatures montage sequences supervised by Martin Scorsese. The film was released on November 1, 1972.

The Elvis On Tour box set includes fascinating behind-the-scenes liner notes by Jerry Schilling, a longtime personal friend and member of Elvis' inner circle.

The set also features an illuminating essay by rock historian/musician Warren Zanes, founding member of The Del Fuegos and Professor at New York University. According to Zanes: 'The set lists and the performances of the Elvis On Tour period bring a rare thing: a fifties legend working in the early seventies who was still taking his audiences to new places….The core band, including Ronnie Tutt, James Burton, Glen D. Hardin, Jerry Scheff, John Wilkinson, Charlie Hodge, the Sweet Inspirations, J.D. Sumner and the Stamps Quartet, and an orchestra led by Joe Guercio, had gotten to a place at which Elvis could inject spontaneity, allowing the arena shows to have a measure of the unexpected…. 1972 was a year of one-hundred-sixty-five performances. In Jorgensen's words, it was a 'climax of his career'. While the '68 Comeback Special marked the significant point at which Presley returned to live performance, 1972 was the year in which the artist revealed most completely what he wanted to do with the creative energy such a return kicked off.'

A definitive portrait of the artist in 1972, the Elvis On Tour box set arrives in the wake of the release of Warner Bros. Pictures' epic big-screen drama, ELVIS, from filmmaker Baz Luhrmann, starring Austin Butler in the title role and Tom Hanks as Colonel Tom Parker, Elvis' longtime manager and technical advisor.

Sony are to release a new Elvis Presley box set called Elvis On Tour . This 6CD+blu-ray package follows The King on his 1972 North American tour and includes audio from four of the shows, two rehearsals and the concert film on blu-ray.

The first three CDs in this set feature performances from 9th, 10th and 14th April 1972 respectively; that’s Hampton Roads Coliseum, Virginia; Richmond Coliseum, Virginia; and Greensboro Coliseum, North Carolina. All three are previously unreleased. The fourth CD features the 18th April gig at the Convention Center Arena, San Antonio, Texas, and includes material that was part of 2003’s Elvis: Close-Up box set, however it has been newly remixed for this release.

Tour rehearsals constitute CDs five and six. CD 5 has audio recorded live at RCA Recording Studios in Hollywood, California, on 30th and 31st March 1972. This is mostly unreleased, although some were issued on a couple of the specialist ‘Follow That Dream’ releases in 2001 and 2004 ( Elvis On Tour – The Rehearsals and Sunset Boulevard , respectively).

CD 6 is all completely unreleased and offers more of the 31 March rehearsals at RCA and includes unreleased takes on Kris Kristofferson’s ‘For The Good Times’. In total, this Elvis On Tour box set features a total of 145 audio tracks, 91 of which are previously unreleased .

The documentary on the blu-ray exists because filmmakers Pierre Adidge and Robert Abel went on the road with Elvis Presley to chronicle this tour. As well as the on-stage performances, the film includes backstage footage, with the original press release boasting that Elvis On Tour offered “the first intimate look at the enigmatic country boy who became the world’s most celebrated musician”. The MGM film would go on to win ‘Best Documentary Film’ at the 30th Golden Globes Awards, in 1973. This was released on VHS/Laserdisc in the early 1980s and was issued by Warner Home Video in 2010 on DVD and blu-ray.

The Elvis On Tour box set will be released on 27 January 2023 (was 2 December 2022) via RCA/Legacy Recordings

Legacy announces ‘elvis on tour’ box set with previously unreleased material.

Posted by Buddy Iahn | Aug 12, 2022

Set contains previously unreleased live and studio material

RCA/Legacy Recordings has announced the release of Elvis On Tour, a newly-compiled 50th anniversary 6 CD/1 Blu-ray box set of Presley’s monumental 1972 concert trek that includes 145 tracks, including 91 previously unreleased live and studio material. The set will be available December 2nd and includes six CDs with previously unreleased Elvis concert performances and studio rehearsals and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment’s Blu-ray edition of the MGM Film, Elvis On Tour, Presley’s last feature film during his lifetime.

The labels have shared “ Burning Love (Rehearsal 2) ,” which was recorded live at RCA Recording Studios in Hollywood in March 1972 as the first taste of the unreleased material.

The Elvis On Tour box set is produced by Ernst Mikael Jørgensen and mixed by Grammy Award-winning Memphis-based producer Matt Ross-Spang. The original recordings were made by Felton Jarvis and Al Pachucki.

Disc one was recorded live on April 9, 1972, at Hampton Roads Coliseum, Hampton, Virginia, and contains all previously unreleased material.

Disc two was recorded live on April 10, 1972, at Richmond Coliseum, Richmond, Virginia, and contains all previously unreleased material.

Disc three was recorded live on April 14, 1972, at Greensboro Coliseum, Greensboro, North Carolina, and contains all previously unreleased material.

Disc four was recorded live on April 18, 1972, at Convention Center Arena, San Antonio, Texas, and includes previously released material from 2003’s Elvis: Close-Up box set, remixed for this release.

Disc five features the tour rehearsals, recorded live at RCA Recording Studios in Hollywood, California, on March 30-31, 1972. The disc is comprised primarily of previously unreleased tracks in addition to performances previously available on the official Elvis Presley collector’s releases Elvis On Tour – The Rehearsals from the 2004 Follow That Dream CD, and 6363 Sunset Boulevard 2001 Follow That Dream CD as well as The Great Performances released in 1990.

Disc six completes Elvis’ rehearsals with his band at RCA Recordings Studios with performances recorded March 31, 1972. The disc includes previously unreleased takes on Kris Kristofferson’s “For The Good Times” as well as performances previously available only on 6363 Sunset Boulevard, Elvis On Tour – The Rehearsals and Amazing Grace.

As Elvis Presley’s national tour played to sold out secondary markets across the country in 1972, Elvis was enjoying himself on-stage and finding electrifying new ways of connecting to audiences at every show.

Award-winning filmmakers Pierre Adidge and Robert Abel ( Mad Dogs & Englishmen ) went on the road with Elvis Presley and his band with all-access passes, cameras and crew to chronicle the King of Rock & Roll at his on-stage peak in MGM’s Elvis On Tour documentary film. The film captures Elvis, the human being driving the myth, behind-the-scenes backstage with his eyes open and his defenses down. According to MGM’s original press release, the Elvis On Tour film “offers the first intimate look at the enigmatic country boy who became the world’s most celebrated musician.” Both documentary and concert film, Elvis On Tour features montage sequences supervised by Martin Scorsese. The film was released on November 1, 1972.

The Elvis On Tour box set includes fascinating behind-the-scenes liner notes by Jerry Schilling, a longtime personal friend and member of Elvis’ inner circle.

The set also features an illuminating essay by rock historian/musician Warren Zanes, founding member of The Del Fuegos and Professor at New York University.

A definitive portrait of the artist in 1972, the Elvis On Tour box set arrives in the wake of the release of Warner Bros. Pictures’ epic big-screen drama, Elvis , from filmmaker Baz Luhrmann, starring Austin Butler in the title role and Tom Hanks as Colonel Tom Parker, Elvis’ longtime manager and technical advisor.

Customer Reviews

Great,awesome,excellent.

Wonderful! Each concert was a little different, and I love the rehearsals. Thanks so much! Just one more reminder of how great he was!

what struck me with this set is the good audio quality on the CDs, and in that regard it's the best release of this material to date, as far as i'm aware of... the box set is a little expensive, so it will probably be purchased mostly by die hard fans... but luckily for others one can listen to all the CDs on Spotify and other places... the bluray i have not seen but i've heard it's identical to the 2010 release... so the real value of this release is the CDs... fans are still waiting for a new release of the complete "On Tour" video material....

Delighted this material has finally been released.. Excellent sound from the concerts and the rehearsal cds were good too. (Although I always think the FTD label sound is much better than any legacy release or commercial release.. I think the FtD label is untouchable for presentation and sound and love their releases.. The blu Ray is very disappointing as clearly no work went into and it looks and sounds like a normal DVD.. Overall I'm happy with this release...now let's remaster the movie and get it on the cinemas worldwide please

Really like the set it's very good

elvis on tour box review

Elvis History Blog

Elvis on tour elvis movie #33 metro-goldwyn-mayer | 1972.

I first saw Elvis On Tour at a Gulfport, Mississippi, theater while on military duty in 1972. As an Elvis fan, the film so impressed me that I went back a few days later to see it again, this time taking a couple of my military buddies with me. I felt Elvis On Tour was so dynamic that it would surely convert my Elvis-mocking friends into new Elvis fans. Well, the documentary didn’t exactly show my friends the error of their ways as I had hoped, but they did come away admitting that Elvis had the ability to sing “some songs” well.

Elvis On Tour mainly covers Presley’s 15-city tour in April of 1972. Producer-directors Pierre Adidge and Robert Abel had the film ready for a media preview at MGM Studios in Culver City on October 30, 1972, and national release to theaters just two days later. Variety’s reviewer, identified only as “Murf,” attended the Culver City preview, and his review of the film appeared in the show biz weekly on November 8, 1972. Positive throughout, Murf began his review as follows.

“‘Elvis On Tour,’ followup to ‘Elvis—That’s The Way It Is’ of two years ago, is a bright entertaining pop music documentary detailing episodes in the later professional life of Elvis Presley, the pioneer Pied Piper of rock music. Multi-panel composition and zesty editing make for a pleasant 92 minutes, and the … production should do well at the youth [box office]. Martin Scorsese’s montage supervision highlights a top technical effort.”

• Scorsese gave life to Elvis On Tour

Scorsese, of course, would later build an impressive reputation as a Hollywood director, but in 1972 his creative use of the split-screen format in Elvis On Tour breathed life into a film that otherwise might have been pretty dreary. In addition to showing the star on stage from several viewpoints, the montage approach keeps the viewer’s eye moving back-and-forth from the star to the musicians to the concert audience and elsewhere as the screen splits into two, three, and sometimes four panels. (Please see Reader Comment below)

In one memorable montage, Elvis, in three different-colored jump suits, is shown taking the stage in three different cities. The scene spotlights Presley’s co-star if the film—his flashy attire. Variety noted that Elvis’ stage costumes fit his super-power persona.

“Bill Belew’s wardrobe for Presley’s on-stage concert appearances make the star resemble Captain Marvel, which isn’t far off the mark considering what Presley has accomplished in an 18-year period of worldwide fame. The musicianship is updated of course, but the adroit insertion of some old Ed Sullivan guestint footage places the early days in complementing, not contrasting context.”

While I agree with Murf that the inserted Sullivan footage provides a suitable connection with Presley’s past, for me it establishes a clear contrast between the young rocker of the fifties and his glittery re-embodiment in the early seventies. Elvis’s sheer joy and energy on Sullivan’s stage, supported as he was by a mere handful of musicians and singers, is in clear contrast with the 37-year-old icon, an army of backup musicians both behind and in front of him, struggling mightily to conjure up the fire of his youth. Perhaps the contrast seems greater now than it did when the film first appeared. When viewing Elvis On Tour today, the viewer is armed with the knowledge of Presley’s subsequent physical decline over the following few years. We didn’t know it was coming in 1972.

Although Variety predicted success for Elvis On Tour, the film performed only moderately at the box office. It reached no higher than #13 on Variety’s weekly list of top-grossing films. During its first weekend of release, it played in 187 theaters in 105 cities, grossing about $500,000.

• Canby in The New York Times called film a “storybook myth”

The film’s debut in the country’s largest city, however, was delayed seven months, not opening in New York until June 6, 1973. The next day Vincent Canby reviewed Elvis On Tour in The New York Times . In contrast to Variety’s positive review, Canby focused on the film’s shortcomings. Its Achilles’ heel, he judged, was the star himself. “A natural spin-off of the rock concert tour is the rock concert tour film,” noted Canby. “Pierre Adidge and Robert Abel are such experienced hands that I suspect they were inhibited by the magnitude of their latest subject, Elvis Presley. Or perhaps—dare I say?—his minitude.”

In Canby’s view, Elvis On Tour did not live up to its billing as an “intimate portrait” of Elvis. “The camera never catches him in a truly candid moment,” Canby explains. “Close-ups do not reveal anything but, rather, they enshrine an ideal.”

The Times review further argues that Elvis reveals little about himself “while getting on and off airplanes, on and off buses, and in and out of limousines. Strip away the storybook myth and—lo—there is a storybook myth underneath; a nice, clean-cut, multimillionaire pop idol who is, offstage, hard-working and friendly and something less than a riveting personality. The essential blandness of the offstage Elvis has the effect of diminishing the impact of what we see of the onstage performances.”

• Elvis On Tour marked beginning of the end for Elvis

Even for this Elvis fan, it’s difficult to refute Canby’s premise. Elvis On Tour was fashioned to perpetuate the Presley fairytale that his fans had come to believe. No doubt Elvis and Colonel Parker insisted that the film’s producers not disturb the myth. We know now that in Elvis’ personal life the forces of self-destruction were already at work. Ironically, two members of Elvis’ inner circle, Red West and Sonny West, whose book would eventually expose their boss’ dark side, are seen often in Elvis On Tour .

Watching Elvis On Tour today is a conflicting experience. On one hand there is the pleasure of seeing the star near the top of his game. But it would be the last such experience most of us would ever have. Seeing him on the screen, it’s hard to believe that Elvis Presley would be dead just five short years later. Elvis On Tour was immensely gratifying when I first saw it in 1972. However, whenever I’ve watched it during the years since then, I can’t help but see in it the beginning of the end for Elvis Presley. —  Alan Hanson  | © November 2008

Reader Comment: In your "history" of Elvis on Tour, your comment about Martin Scorcese is completely incorrect. The ONLY segment that Scorcese worked on in that film is one small part where EP was in a limo and they were going past bridges and landmarks. He CERTAINLY did not have anything to do with the split screen technology or back and forth between Elvis/audience/ stage as you say. I know this for a fact. This technology was pioneered by my brother Pierre Adidge. He was also the one who supervised Scorcese and mentored him. Please, give credit where it's due. Thank you. — Jeannine

Review: ‘The Beach Boys’ is a sentimental documentary that downplays the band’s squabbles

I will (almost) always watch a film about the Beach Boys — the latest, titled simply “The Beach Boys,” premieres Friday on Disney+ — not just for the part they played in American musical and cultural history but for the part they played in my own. From 1966 to 1969 my father worked for the band, in the capacity of a tour promoter; that these were their years of lesser popularity, as rock got heavy and dour and jammy, meant that this relationship gave me no cachet among my peers. But it was interesting to me.

I saw them play, in striped shirts, white suits, colorful velours and out of costume, at the Hollywood Bowl, when the kids still screamed during their shows; at the Melodyland theater-in-the-round across from Disneyland, when they seemingly couldn’t get booked any closer to L.A.; and at the Whisky A Go Go, when “ Sunflower ” was released. I saw Dennis Wilson drag race; his Shelby Cobra rolled over my toe as it was being pushed to the starting line, but as much of the weight had been stripped out of the car, no damage was done. Bruce Johnston introduced me to Eric Clapton backstage at a Blind Faith concert. (“This is Eric,” he said. “Hello,” I said.) I rode for a minute in a car with Carl Wilson and his parents.

A group shot of the Beach Boys.

In the ’60s, the Beach Boys were gods. By the ’70s, ‘has-beens.’ But it’s not that simple

A new Beach Boys box set with expanded versions of two overlooked 1970s albums, ‘Surf’s Up’ and ‘Sunflower,’ makes a strong case for their post-peak greatness.

Aug. 27, 2021

I knew them as much as any child knows a parent’s business associates, which is to say, not at all really, but they were familiar characters, as were the support staff in the office, the studio and the road. They came together in stray bits of news and gossip, coalescing into a pantheon that floated about my life. The Maharishi , with whom the band briefly toured, gave my dad his mantra. And there was Charles Manson, of course, the ineradicable dark blot in any telling of this tale, who attached himself to Dennis looking for pop stardom . My father had moved on by the time of the Tate-La Bianca murders, but as he had once thrown Charlie out of the office — that was a moment in our house.

Directed by Frank Marshall (“Rather”) and Thom Zimny (whose documentary “ Elvis Presley: The Searcher ” is one of the best films about Elvis), it covers well-traveled — oft-surfed? — territory. Not even counting the scores of online videos and the all-star tributes, there’s a wealth of full-blown films about the band as a whole and of Brian Wilson, the foundation of their sound, going back decades, including three biopics: two for television — the Dennis-focused “Summer Dreams” and “ The Beach Boys: An American Family ” — and the well-regarded big-screen Brian young-and-old movie “Love and Mercy.”

Four men singing behind a fifth man seated and playing the piano

It’s irresistible material, a show business story and a family drama, salted with child abuse, drug addiction, mental illness and recovery, a war between art and commerce and an arc of success and failure and success — when “Endless Summer,” a two-LP best-of package went to No. 1 on the charts in 1974, it catapulted the group into permanent residency as “America’s Band.” With its range of good-time rock ’n’ roll and ambitious, eccentric art-pop, they’re at once a band for everybody and a band for geeks.

Running less than two hours at a time when four-hour rock docs are not unusual, this is a swift, compact telling, with surprisingly little in the way of music and whole swaths of recording history skated over. But it looks fantastic, with a bounty of archival photographs and home movies, many of which are new to me, even as a veteran of these things. Apart from new interview footage with the survivors, in and around the band, and the customary pop musician testimonials, not much if anything will be new to the fans. What is new, among Beach Boys documentaries, is the tone, which does not linger on the sensational episodes and downplays the squabbling to emphasize the love.

Review: Showtime revisits Beach Boys’ classic ‘Pet Sounds’ in new documentary

Produced as part of the BBC “Classic Albums” series, “Beach Boys: Making Pet Sounds” has been flown transatlantically to Showtime to belatedly commemorate the 50th anniversary of an album relatively few people bought in its time but which is now widely considered a landmark of pop music.

April 6, 2017

For a group whose relations have been famously divisive, and whose story has been marked by tragedy — the early deaths of Dennis and Carl are represented only by a closing title card — it’s essentially good-natured, even sentimental. (The film checks out early in their ongoing, competitive careers, before the Beach Boys became Mike Love’s band and Brian a solo artist, and surprisingly omits their 50th-anniversary reunion tour and final studio album, the 2012 “ That’s Why God Made the Radio ,” which is not bad at all.) Everybody, even problematic Wilson dad Murry, gets their due. A staged but genuinely sweet closing scene may bring a tear to your eye.

Like the Beatles or the Grateful Dead, the Beach Boys are a perennial act whose influence will long outlive them. And eventually the idiosyncratic pop music they made in the late 1960s — my years in their orbit, which is to say my Beach Boys music — came to be celebrated. Few bought “Friends” when it came out in 1968, but now you can listen to a four-part podcast in which well-informed fans take it apart, tenderly, track by track, instrument by instrument, voice by voice.

Graceland is not for sale, Elvis Presley’s granddaughter Riley Keough says in lawsuit

The granddaughter of Elvis Presley is fighting plans to publicly auction his Graceland estate in Memphis. A company attempted to sell the property based on claims that a loan using it as collateral was not repaid. Actor Riley Keough says the company’s claims are fraudulent.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Elvis Presley’s estate is fighting what it says is a fraudulent scheme to auction off Graceland to the highest bidder.

An auction had been scheduled for Thursday this week, but a Memphis judge blocked it after Presley’s granddaughter Riley Keough sought a temporary restraining order and filed a lawsuit, court documents show.

A public notice for a foreclosure sale of the 13-acre estate in Memphis posted earlier in May said Promenade Trust, which controls the Graceland museum, owes $3.8 million after failing to repay a 2018 loan. Keough, an actor, inherited the trust and ownership of the home after the death of her mother, Lisa Marie Presley , last year.

Naussany Investments and Private Lending said Lisa Marie Presley had used Graceland as collateral for the loan, according to the foreclosure sale notice. Keough, on behalf of the Promenade Trust, sued last week, claiming that Naussany presented fraudulent documents regarding the loan in September 2023.

FILE - Lisa Marie Presley arrives at the premiere of "Mad Max: Fury Road" at the TCL Chinese Theatre, May 7, 2015, in Los Angeles. A memoir that Lisa Marie Presley had been working on at the time of her death will be published this fall. “Few people had the opportunity to know who my mom really was, other than being Elvis’s daughter," actor Riley Keough, the eldest of Presley's four children and who helped complete the book, said in a statement released Thursday, Jan. 11, 2024, by publisher Random House. (Photo by Jordan Strauss/Invision/AP, File)

“Lisa Maria Presley never borrowed money from Naussany Investments and never gave a deed of trust to Naussany Investments,” Keough’s lawyer wrote in a lawsuit.

Kimberly Philbrick, the notary whose name is listed on the documents, indicated that she never met Lisa Marie Presley nor notarized any documents for her, the court filing said. The Associated Press texted Philbrick at numbers believed to be hers, but she didn’t immediately respond.

W. Bradley Russell, a lawyer for Keough, declined comment Tuesday.

Kurt Naussany, who was identified in court documents as a defendant, directed questions in an email to Gregory Naussany. Gregory Naussany told the AP in an email: “The attorneys can make comment!” Court records do not show a lawyer for the company.

The court documents included addresses for the businesses in Jacksonville, Florida, and Hollister, Missouri. Both were for post offices. A Kimberling City, Missouri, reference was for a post office box.

An injunction hearing is scheduled for Wednesday in Shelby County Chancery Court.

“Elvis Presley Enterprises can confirm that these claims are fraudulent. There is no foreclosure sale. Simply put, the counter lawsuit has been filed is to stop the fraud,” Elvis Presley Enterprises Inc. said in a statement Tuesday.

Graceland opened as a museum and tourist attraction in 1982 as a tribute to Elvis Presley, the singer and actor who died in August 1977 at age 42. It draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. A large Presley-themed entertainment complex across the street from the museum is owned by Elvis Presley Enterprises.

Tim Marshall, of Queensland, Australia, went to the gates of Graceland on Tuesday as part of a weekslong U.S. tour with his partner. Marshall, 54, said he heard the news about the Graceland sale attempt.

“I was surprised,” Marshall said. “We don’t know enough about it. I think it would be not very good if they lose it.”

Associated Press reporters Sarah Brumfield in Silver Spring, Maryland, and Heather Hollingsworth in Mission, Kansas, contributed to this story.

This story has been corrected to reflect that Russell is a lawyer for Keough, not Naussany Investments.

Taylor Swift: Which Eras Tour Songs Didn’t Make Concert Film & Which Surprise Songs Got In

Every show on the Eras Tour involves an acoustic set where Swift performs at least two songs custom to that night’s show. At first, she wouldn’t allow herself repeats unless she messed up the lyrics to a song, but now, she has done away with that rule and gotten more creative by combining songs in mashups and playing up to four in a segment. The first song or three take place on guitar, and then she shifts to piano for the second half before diving beneath the stage to resume the setlist – which has since contracted and expanded to include a  Tortured Poets Department  era and set .

Below you’ll find Taylor Swift’s surprise songs that she has played most recently in Europe as well as a record of all those she has played on the entire tour so far.

Billy Eichner

Billy Eichner is finally getting to live out his childhood dream of a being in a major stage musical.

The “Bros” star is making his Hollywood Bowl singing debut this weekend during “ The Lion King ‘s” 30th anniversary live-to-film concert.

“We just had our first official rehearsal all together this morning,” Eichner told me Wednesday afternoon. “The scope and size of it really knocked me out. If I can get through it, I think it’s going to be really fun.”

Popular on Variety

Young Eichner calmed down in time for the show: “I was blown away. I could not stop watching Nathan. He just blew my mind, just the ultimate musical comedy star.”

Eicher became friends with Lane, who played Timon in the original “Lion King” movie, after they were introduced at a birthday party for Bridget Everett. “When I got the role of Timon and he saw the movie, he was always sending me emails of support,” Eichner said of the Tony winner. “When I had gotten some good reviews, he was congratulating me. He’s my hero, so to be on stage with him is truly wild.”

With Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s daughter Blue Ivy Carter making her feature film debut in “Mufasa” as Kiara, the daughter of Nala (Beyoncé) and Simba (Donald Glover), I asked Eichner if he got to work with the music superstars’ offspring. “I’m not sure what I’m allowed to say, so I’m not going to say it,” he said. “But I’m excited about ‘Mufasa.’ We just had what I think was maybe our final recording sessions with [director] Barry Jenkins. It was the first time I’ve seen any of the movie.”

But for now, all his attention is on the Hollywood Bowl. He’ll take part in a full dress rehearsal later today. “All of the producers have flown over from London,” Eichner said. “We’re all finally in person together with the orchestra and the conductor and choreographer Jamal Sims and so many dancers — so many dancers! I feel like I’m on Madonna’s Blond Ambition tour.”

  5. Review: Elvis Presley, "Elvis on Tour"

When Elvis on Tour hit the big screen in 1972, Elvis Presley was no longer the frequent cinema fixture of the 1960s, when he would crank out two or even three motion pictures a year. His last movie appearance was the 1970 documentary Elvis: That's the Way It Is, chronicling the Elvis Summer Festival of 1970 at Las Vegas' International Hotel. Elvis on Tour painted with an even larger canvas.
