If you're willing to make the drive from Miami (you'll score cheaper flights into this airport), Key West can be an affordable place to spend spring break. This small island in the Florida Keys is known for its quirky residents and premier snorkeling opportunities. While you'll find plenty of spots for partying along rowdy Duval Street, you can also soak up some culture at the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum. For free attractions, check out the Key West First Legal Rum Distillery and the Southernmost Point. Plus, Key West offers several budget-friendly vacation rentals, so you can save your cash for bars and boat tours.

Panama City Beach – or PCB, for short – is a tried-and-true Florida spring break location that is sure to please the masses. Scope out a spot across the town's 27 miles of white sand beaches to sunbathe, play volleyball or scan the horizon for bottlenose dolphins. You'll no doubt have to contend with hordes of college students while on your trip, but hotel prices are reasonable if you book your accommodations in advance. Just note: This town in northwest Florida bans alcohol consumption on the beach during March, so you'll have to enjoy your adult beverages elsewhere.

New Orleans is a prime spring break destination for those seeking epic nightlife mixed with tasty Southern comfort food . While airfare can be a bit expensive, hotel and vacation rental deals are available – especially if you stay a bit removed from the action of the French Quarter. Check the calendar to see when Mardi Gras occurs (the celebration falls 47 days before Easter every year) and try to plan your vacation around it. The popular event, which sometimes takes place during spring break season in early March, often causes airfare and lodging expenses to increase.

With hotels offering nightly rates around $200 or less and DJs and celebrities holding court at nightclubs, South Padre Island, Texas, is a hot spring break destination for college students. This South Texas locale is only about 30 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border, meaning you'll get to enjoy warm weather without having to leave the country (average daytime temperatures range from the mid-70s to the low 80s in spring). As an added bonus, the island offers a free public shuttle system, so budget-conscious travelers won't have to worry about spending money on a rental car.

cheap places to travel spring break

Situated on Mexico's eastern coast about 40 miles south of Cancun, Playa del Carmen offers multiple stretches of white sand, a lively nightlife scene and average highs in the mid-80s, making it perfect for a fun-filled yet relaxing spring break trip. Though you may have to deal with some crowds since it's such a popular destination come spring, you will at least be safe from the dreaded hurricane season, which takes place from June to September. Search for specific spring break all-inclusive resort deals for the best value lodging rates.

With sprawling beaches and ample low-cost accommodation options, the Outer Banks in North Carolina is an attractive spring break vacation spot. The limited hotel choices are all pretty affordable, and this area is known for its large vacation rental homes – including some that can accommodate 15 or more guests – which makes it a cost-effective option for large groups. Spring weather here varies: While it's often sunny, average temperatures can be anywhere in the 60s to low 70s. Cheap and fun activities on this chain of family-friendly barrier islands include mini-golf, fishing and relaxing on the beach.

cheap places to travel spring break

Daytona Beach's spring break draw has to do with its ample amount of hotels (position yourself away from the shore or a few miles outside of the city for the best deals), its trademark Florida weather (which climbs into the 70s and 80s throughout March and April) and its 23 miles of beaches. Though you'll miss the city's main event, the Daytona 500, you can still take part in some smaller, more affordable racing-themed festivities, including several that are part of Daytona Bike Week, which takes place from early to mid-March.

cheap places to travel spring break

As the first (and longest) island of the Florida Keys, Key Largo appeals to spring breakers who want a getaway that feels off-the-beaten-track without having to travel too far to get it. Sitting less than 60 miles south of Miami (don't miss a stop at Everglades National Park along the way), this idyllic island enjoys little precipitation and balmy temperatures in the 70s in March, perfect for exploring John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park on a snorkeling excursion. While March's influx of tourists drives up hotel prices, you can save some coin by splitting the room rate with friends and booking your accommodations far in advance.

cheap places to travel spring break

For West Coast spring breakers looking to relax in the sun without paying an arm and a leg for airfare, San Diego is a great place to vacation on a budget. It's home to 70 miles of beaches , gorgeous parks and pockets of nightlife, plus scenic neighborhoods like La Jolla and Seaport Village that are free to explore. March and April weather is mild (average temperatures hover in the 60s during the day), but hotel rates won't yet be at their priciest. You'll also get to experience Instagram-worthy flower fields blooming all across the city, from Balboa Park to Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.

cheap places to travel spring break

Outdoor lovers who are looking for an alternative spring break experience can plan a budget-friendly trip to Arizona's Grand Canyon National Park. Accommodations here are cheap: You can camp for a nominal fee or rent an affordable cabin or recreational vehicle that can accommodate a large group. However, you'll want to book well in advance for this popular time of year. Spring is also an excellent time to see this impressive natural wonder thanks to comfortable daytime temps that fluctuate between the 50s and 70s in March and April. Visitors can enjoy everything from hiking to biking around the South Rim.

cheap places to travel spring break

Thanks to its plethora of affordable oceanfront hotels, 60 miles of beaches (though the ocean will still be too chilly for swimming) and proximity to many major East Coast cities, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, is a great choice for budget-conscious travelers. From lively nightlife options to parties hosted by big-name DJs, this South Carolina town offers the classic spring break experience. If you're traveling with a large group, consider renting a house for more space and a full-size kitchen. Use the money you save on accommodations to purchase a Ripley's Aquarium of Myrtle Beach day pass or catch a show at the Alabama Theatre.

Everybody wants to go on spring break. But travel is expensive, especially to peak spring break destinations like Miami or Cancún or during peak dates like Easter.

If you’re on a budget but still want to enjoy a spring vacation, there are some destinations out there that are more affordable than others, from free U.S. national parks to emerging countries to destinations that have many options for spending your points and miles (in the case that you’re points rich but cash poor).

Here are the best affordable spring break destinations to consider in 2024.

Before we get into where to go, consider these spring break budgeting tips that run beyond just choosing an affordable destination.

  • Dip into your points and miles stash. Using points and miles for airfare and hotels frees up cash for other travel activities such as tours and dining.
  • Avoid a spring break vacation over Easter (March 31 ) . If you avoid the peak Easter dates, you may find cheaper airfare or hotels.
  • Consider traveling at the beginning or end of the spring season. A trip at the end of February or early May can be more cost-effective, depending on the destination.
  • Consider all-inclusives or home rentals. These may be more affordable than staying at a hotel and eating out.

Use the right credit card to earn the most points on travel. Even if you’re paying cash, you can maximize points earnings to save on your next trip. Cards such as the Chase Sapphire Reserve ® or American Express ®  Green Card allow you to earn either 3x Chase Ultimate Reward points or 3x Amex Membership Reward points per dollar spent on both travel and dining.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park

There are more than 60 U.S. national parks , but less than 20 of them are free . Great Smoky Mountains National Park is one of the parks that doesn’t charge an entrance fee , making access for large families or various carloads easy. Just know you have to pay a parking fee of $5 per day or $15 per week.

The Great Smoky Mountains are a spectacular place for a road trip, especially for those who live in neighboring states. With endless scenic drives and many vantage points perfect for snapping that iconic shot, those who want to enjoy nature but not necessarily get out in it will love a trip to this destination. Likewise, if you want to get out into the wilderness and camp, fees start at just $30, with cabin fees starting at $200 .

South Padre Island

This affordable spring break destination is within the continental U.S. and is close to 2 different airports: Valley International Airport (HRL) and the Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport (BRO) . South Padre Island is also just a road trip away from Houston, San Antonio, and Austin and not too far from Corpus Christi Airport (CRP) and Padre Island National Seashore .

Although South Padre Island has a reputation for being a party area and cheap spring break destination for college students (who may or may not enjoy the laid-back scene at the newly opened Margaritaville Beach Resort ), there are quieter parts of the island that welcome families who are on the hunt for affordable activities and warm weather . Half of the area’s 24 beaches are even handicapped-accessible with Mobi-mats . Check out nature sites like the Laguna Madre Nature Trail, a marshland where you can spot pelicans and other avifauna, and Andy Bowie Park , a coastal recreational area.

Clearwater Beach

If you’re jonesing for that Florida sunshine but Miami is out of your budget, Tampa is your destination. It’s recently been known as a hot spot for people moving there during the pandemic , but the same things that make it a great (and affordable) place to live also make it a great (and affordable) place to vacation. You’ll find plenty of free activities, like strolling the Tampa Riverwalk, viewing manatees at Tampa Electric’s Manatee Viewing Center , or lounging on the soft sands of Clearwater Beach . And if Disney is too expensive, you could always opt for Busch Gardens in Tampa instead .

And you can still have a cool hotel stay without overspending. For example, prices for a stay at The Tampa EDITION are nearly $300 less on random April dates than The Miami EDITION . If you do have a stash of points, Tampa’s larger hotel chains also have lower budget options — think Sheraton, La Quinta Inn, Aloft, DoubleTree, and Holiday Inn (as well as fancier options like Westin and Grand Hyatt) if you’re looking for a deal in either cash or points.

Punta Cana DR

If you want everything — accommodation, meals, and activities — all in 1 easy package, Punta Cana is an excellent destination for spring break all-inclusive resorts for all budgets . From more affordable hotels to luxury resorts to several different all-inclusive hotels you can book using points, travelers looking for a deal on fun in the sun should head to this Caribbean hot spot. If you’re flexible on your spring travel dates, you may be able to find an all-inclusive resort option for less than $200 to 250 per night (double occupancy) .

A cheap spring break destination for families, many Punta Cana all-inclusive hotels, such as the Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana and the Finest Punta Cana , offer features like on-site water parks or kids’ clubs, while others are adults-only — an ideal, inexpensive spring break for college students or couples.

Guatemala

Guatemala is filled with exciting adventures. Start by discovering the peaceful, mystical shores of Lake Atitlán , which rests in a volcanic crater surrounded by Maya villages and the Guatemalan highlands. Visit colorful, welcoming, historic towns like Chichicastenango and Antigua , where you can easily save money by staying in local guesthouses and eating street food like tamales, pupusas, and tasty stews.

Hikers should trek up the active Pacaya or Acatenango volcanos, while those in the market for a little soul-searching should head to hippie village San Marcos for cacao, temezcal, or other wellness ceremonies and rituals. Meanwhile, outdoorsy types can dip into Semuc Champey , a stunning set of turquoise pools that are part of a limestone bridge.

Lake Havasu

An easy drive for students out west, Lake Havasu is a cheap and warm spring break destination for college students, young adults, or, yes, even families (hear us out) . While college kids can hang out on boats, enjoying the lake’s party atmosphere (12-person party boat rentals start at about $100 per hour, meaning each young adult will pay less than $50 for a 5-hour booze cruise ), families can head to more tranquil beaches and roam off-road trails.

In the evening, college kids can enjoy the town’s lively atmosphere. Those looking for something quieter or more affordable should camp — beachfront camping is available year-round and starts at $40 per night, and cabin pricing starts at $119 per night.

Lisbon Portugal Rooftops

One of Europe’s most affordable capitals, Lisbon is one of the best cheap international spring break destinations . You’ll likely have bright, sunny, and mild weather in Portugal in spring, especially if you head over in April. While Lisbon offers historic attractions and monuments like the Fado Museum and São Jorge Castle , visitors can have budget experiences like enjoying the city’s red-roofed vistas from different hilltop viewpoints (we like Santa Catarina), getting lost in the winding streets of the Alfama distinct , riding vintage trams around the city, or admiring the unique and colorful Portuguese tile that covers nearly every building.

Lisbon’s most famous pastry, pastéis de nata , consists of a flaky crust filled with egg custard and costs less than a couple of euros each. You wouldn’t be the first traveler on a budget to eat a couple of them for lunch instead of a more traditional meal.

TAP Portugal is the national air carrier of Portugal, and rewards like Capital One miles transfer to TAP’s Miles&Go program. While there are many ways to earn lots of TAP miles , we recommend getting the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card , earning miles, and transferring them at a 1:1 ratio. Redeem TAP miles to fly between U.S. hubs and destinations like Lisbon (LIS) and Porto (OPO).

Savannah Georgia

Savannah is the perfect destination for an adult spring break . The city’s serene, leafy corners, Southern charm, and haunted history make it the ideal destination to wander around hand-in-hand with a loved one, all while staying within your budget. Many destinations, such as the romantic, 30-acre Forsyth Park and the flowering Savannah Botanical Gardens , are free to enter . If you tire of exploring as a couple, you can always join a free walking tour of the historic center.

Tybee Island is also free to visit (though you have to pay for transportation and parking) and is about a 20-minute drive from central Savannah. Here, you can frolic on sandy beaches and explore the Tybee Island Lighthouse and Museum ($12 to enter).

Marrakech

Be ready for an assault on the senses as you traverse the labyrinth that is Marrakech’s souk. It’s completely free to admire the snake charmers, steaming food, and market wares in the chaotic Jemaa el-Fnaa square. Visitors looking for more adrenaline-pumping action can ride camels, drive ATVs, or trek through desert sands and the snow-capped Atlas Mountains , all for a relatively affordable price (3-hour quad tours run as low as $25 per person).

Lodging in Morocco can be done on the cheap , too. Forgo the luxury digs and consider a boutique riad or guesthouse. As there are so many, you can find comfortable ones tucked away in the bazaars that are actually incredibly charming, often for less than $100 per night. Many have rooftops or pools from which you can enjoy the warm Moroccan sunshine. And whatever you do, don’t let scammers convince you to buy overpriced carpets, which will take all the budget fun out of your spring break.

Greek Islands

Those looking for a spring Greek getaway find the numerous islands full of sunshine without the tourists . A romantic trip to Santorini, a party vacation to Mykonos, or a family getaway to Rhodes can easily be hot and frustrating in the summer months, thanks to tourist crowds and sweltering temps. But spring is when the islands’ concessions open up (ferries often pick back up in March or April), and you can enjoy the beaches, attractions, and local Greek cuisine in a crowd-free and more affordable way.

And don’t discount some of Greece’s lesser-known islands and wonders. Destinations like the charming Peloponnese region and the Athens Riviera are popular among locals but not often frequented by tourists. Islands like Amorgos, Antiparos, Folegandros, Kythira, Milos, Symi, Tinos, and many others can often be cost-effective and more authentic , as opposed to the more popular islands.

The most expensive part of visiting Greece is probably airfare and hotel. Cut costs by using points and miles to fly to Greece .

Myrtle Beach

Although spring is slightly more expensive than winter in Myrtle Beach for golfers, it’s the perfect time to putt along the area’s 90 golf courses with ideal weather — and it’s still significantly cheaper to visit in spring than summer.

If golfing isn’t your thing, there are plenty of other activities to do there, starting with the Myrtle Beach Marathon (March 2) and Run to the Sun Car Show (March 14-16).

April brings events like the Myrtle Beach Food Truck Festival (April 5-7), the opening of Pelicans baseball (April 5), and the SOS Spring Safari Festival, where thousands of shag dancers descend on the city (April 18-28).

May offers a family-friendly concert series, special bike days, the Myrtle Beach Classic, a PGA Tour event (May 9-12), and the Blue Crab Festival (May 15-17) .

Gulf Shores Alabama

The budgeting secret to this Alabama spring break spot is visiting before Memorial Day when prices rise and the summer season begins. Although the water may be chilly for swimming in the spring months, beach bums can still affordably enjoy the sunshine and expansive sands.

The white sands and turquoise waters of Orange Beach are inviting to all types of travelers, whether you want to relax and sunbathe or enjoy water sports and beach activities.

Looking for cheap places to go in Florida for spring break? You can easily cross state lines and arrive at Perdido Key in a mere 15 minutes from Gulf Shores . The barrier island is rife with wildlife and home to a few state parks worth visiting to explore the wetlands and wildlife, such as Perdido Key State Park and Big Lagoon State Park.

Tacos

Tacos, tacos, and tacos — need we say more? Street tacos may be enough to get you there, but visiting Mexico’s capital in spring offers so many more budget delights. The city is relatively affordable to visit year-round, but spring sees low humidity and rain, abundant sunshine, and you can expect the jacarandas to be in bloom, too .

A typical lunch at a restaurant or food stall in Mexico City shouldn’t cost you more than $10 , and there are lots of other free and affordable activities to do, too. Coveted cultural attractions like the Frida Kahlo Museum , the Palace of Fine Arts , and the Chapultepec Zoo don’t cost anything to enter, and you can always sign up for a free walking tour to understand more about the city’s culture and history while enjoying the sites.

Key West FL

The Florida Keys aren’t the cheapest spring break destinations on this list, but there are ways to save money when visiting. You’ll find many affordable home rentals (versus pricier hotels), and for those that want to enjoy the warm sunshine outdoors, there are lots of easy and enjoyable activities that go far beyond bumming around the beach, including 3 national parks: Biscayne , Dry Tortugas , and the Everglades .

Spring brings sightings of white herons, deer, and sea turtles (May is the start of nesting season). Visiting Key West National Wildlife Refuge is free , though you may want to pay to rent snorkel gear or kayaks to better explore the area. You can also wander through the Florida Keys Wild Bird Center free of charge — you may even catch a pelican feeding.

Flying into Miami (MIA) and driving to the Florida Keys may save you money. If you plan to spend some time in Miami, here are the top cheap Miami hotels and affordable activities to do when there.

New Orleans

New Orleans made the cut for our list of the best spring break destinations for families in the U.S., a destination that, at first glance, may appeal to partiers and foodies but also has lots to do for every type of traveler and every family member . You’ll never be shushed for the little ones making noise, as NOLA is lively and fun, with live musicians marching the streets and plenty of chatter.

Although we love the Louisiana Children’s Museum , if you don’t want to pay $18 per visitor, you can simply roam around the French Quarter and delight in all the action, or wander City Park in search of some greenery (and a more tranquil place to get beignets ). If there are any surprise rain showers (though spring is usually warm and sunny), pop into Arnaud’s Mardi Gras Museum for free.

From Guatemala to Alabama to Lisbon, there are many affordable spring break destinations to visit worldwide, especially if you think outside of the box from the more traditional Cancún and Orlando.

Just remember that you can make any spring break trip an affordable one by dipping into that stash of points and miles, which can help you score plane tickets and hotels for (almost) free.

Nebraska’s #1 tourist attraction is the Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium . It regularly competes with the San Diego Zoo as the top zoo in the country!

With plenty of indoor exhibits like the jungle, desert dome, butterfly house and aquarium, you can enjoy a day – or more – at the zoo, regardless of the weather. Penang, a UNESCO Word Heritage Site island off Malaysia’s northwestern coast, is one of the best family destinations for spring break.

There are plenty of  things to do in Penang , and most are perfect for families, too. First of all, with 1 USD being equivalent to 4 Malaysian Ringgit (the price of a meal in one of the islands famous hawker food centers), you’ll have everything on a budget. Accommodation, restaurants, transport and entry admissions are all affordable.

Start in George Town, taking in the UNESCO-listed old town and trying all the food you can fancy. Not far away are the Botanic Gardens, a perfect place for families to stroll and unwind appreciating the local nature.

If it’s beach that you want, mind well that Penang doesn’t have amazing clear waters, but the resort-strewn coast near Batu Ferringhi, with its night market and plenty of shops and beach-facing restaurants, is great for tucking toes in the sand.

The cultural triangle in Sri Lanka is a great budget destination for families in during spring break. When you think of Sri Lanka you probably think of its beautiful palm-fringed beaches, but Sri Lanka is much more!

Once you go inland there’s a different world of jungles teeming with wildlife and ancient Buddhist temples. With such a variety of things to do there is something for everyone and for every age.

The cultural triangle of Sri Lanka lies in the center of the island and it’s a place where history, culture and nature meet. It’s name refers to the 3 former royal cities of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Dambulla.

All of them left behind well preserved ruins of temples, palaces and Buddhist statues. Most impressive are the colorful Dambulla cave temples and the mysterious Sigiriya Rock.  The Sigiriya Rock is a tough climb with young children, but the views are very rewarding.

In the other places you can rent a bicycle or tuk tuk for more comfort. One thing you will notice is that for the local population these places are still very holy and active places of worship. Another thing you will notice is that the cities are surrounded by thick jungle.

Children will love the opportunity to go on a safari to meet monkeys and elephants up close. Spring is considered to be one of the best times to visit the island’s cultural triangle with dry and sunny weather.

ancient ruins of Athens Greece spring break family vacations

Athens is a great option if you’re looking for cheap family spring break trips. The city is the capital of Greece and there is plenty to do and see for families here.

Athens is much cheaper than many other European cities, so that’s very convenient. Moreover, Athens has a good metro system so you could also stay a bit further from the city center and save money while still being able to fully experience Athens.

One of the things to do for families includes going to the Acropolis Museum. This is one of the best museums of Greece and is all about the Acropolis. The Acropolis is an old citadel from Ancient Greece located on a hill that you can see from all parts of the city. Here you find the famous Parthenon.

Another thing to do is seeing the changing of the guard at the Greek Parliament. Guards dressed up in traditional clothing perform a ceremony where they change shifts.

Besides that, walking through Plaka is a must when you go to Athens . Plaka is the oldest part of Athens with many shops and restaurants. What’s great is that most streets are completely car-free, so kids can run around safely.

For the best cheap spring break trips for families in Europe, Gdansk is a wonderful place for vacation! There is no shortage of fun but also educational activities for  what to do in Gdansk , with one of Europe’s biggest old towns jam-packed with attractions.

Most of the city was destroyed during World War II, but the Poles have done an amazing job in rebuilding it. Go to Westerplatte which was ground zero for World War II, discover the Museum of the Second World War, which also has a children’s section, or go on a tall ship adventure in the Motlawa River.

For the best city views, climb the Clock Tower of the Main Town Hall. The unique houses of Gdansk Old Town almost look like doll houses from above. From there you also get a good bird’s eye view of St. Mary’s Church, which is the city’s most prominent building and one of the largest brick churches in the world.

Montenegro is still relatively hidden gem on the Adriatic Sea coast. The country is perfect for families looking for a relaxing or even adventurous spring break vacation on a budget.

Montenegro has a wide ray of different attractions from spectacular mountains, crystal clear lakes to all-inclusive beach resorts, waterparks and stunning beaches. You can explore 2,500-year-old Budva old town or get lost in Kotor’s Old Town which was built like a maze. You can even take your kids on a fun miniature train ride to Lipa Cave.

Montenegro has the coastal beauty of neighboring Croatia but remains more affordable for family vacations. It’s surprisingly easy to stay under budget when accommodation and attractions cost half of the price of what you’d expect to pay.

For the even more budget-friendly trip, choose self-catering accommodations. If you want to visit Kotor Bay, staying further away from the town center will save you money, as well as choosing nearby villages rather than the most popular spots in the country.

Once there, kids will love the House of Illusions, or take a trip up to the castle for spectacular views. If you’re planning a  Slovenia family holiday   the hotels in Ljubljana are really well priced and it’s easy to find one with a pool or other child friendly amenities.

Take a boat trip through the center to really appreciate the beautiful architecture and then head to a nearby thermal pool for an afternoon of fun in the warm waters. Ljubljana is relatively undiscovered and it’s a European city that has so much charm.

Caribbean: spring break ideas for families on a budget

Gah! The gorgeous Caribbean is up next on this list of best family destinations for spring break. Known for it’s affordability, there are lots of options within the Caribbean for a family vacation.

Here are a few favorites…

28. Playa del Carmen, Mexico

beaches in Mexico with tan sand turquoise water and rocky shoreline

When looking for affordable spring break trips for the family, Mexico offers some unique destinations that you simply can’t ignore. Avoid all the spring break party crowd by heading over to Playa del Carmen and staying at one of the family-friendly resorts.

The beaches are beautiful and you can cut costs by staying in one of the many budget hotels . Or find a self-service apartment that will allow you to cook and eat out at much cheaper prices than you would find in places like Cancun’s hotel zone.

From Playa del Carmen, you can easily access the plethora of  things to do in the Rivieria Maya  region, which in many cases, are perfectly suited to family trips. One place to visit is the Xaman-Ha Bird Sanctuary which is a great place to learn about local wildlife and is free for children.

Playa del Carmen has something for any family who is looking for an entertaining beach getaway.

29. Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is the perfect spot for spring break family vacations, as it’s one of the cheapest destinations in the Caribbean! If your family is up for unforgettable adventures, pristine beaches and lots of fun in the unspoiled nature, consider renting a car and plan a road-trip in the Dominican Republic .

Book an affordable apartment within walking distance to the beach (for as low as $60 per night for a family of 4) on the Samaná peninsula. It’s one of the most beautiful regions in the Dominican Republic and guarantees you’ll be away from all the spring break crowd.

Furthermore, you can count on stunning and authentic kid-friendly experiences, such as exploring waterfalls, horseback riding along the beach or ziplining over the tropical vegetation.

If you shop at local markets and buy regional produce, you can lower your travel costs significantly, as most food prices are at least half or less compared to the United States. If you feel that you just want to relax and get pampered, you can consider an all-inclusive resort instead. While Punta Cana has the biggest selection of resorts, it might be worth considering Puerto Plata on the north coast.

Those resorts are a bit cheaper than Punta Cana, starting from $130 per night for a family of 4 including an all-inclusive meal plan. Additionally, you will avoid the spring break crowds of Punta Cana, which tend to be predominant in some of the resorts during this time.

If you don’t find flights to Puerto Plata, consider flying into Santiago, which is just an hour away from Puerto Plata.

30. Belize (another favorite on this list of cheap spring break trips for families)

One of the best spring break destinations for families has absolutely got to be Belize! It’s easy to keep it low cost while spending a week in this tropical paradise. Here’s an exact cost breakdown on how to do Belize on a budget .

If staying on the beach is a must, consider staying in Placencia, San Pedro or Caye Caulker. However if your family is up for adventure, staying further inland in San Ignacio might be right for you.

From visiting ancient ruins to learning how to make chocolate like the Mayans to taking a snorkeling trip to a private island, there’s plenty of things to do in Belize for your family.

Your family will love visiting this culturally-rich country!

More of the best spring break destinations for families

There’s still a few left on this list! Here are a few more spots around the globe that are worth considering for your family!

31. Guatemala

yellow chapel bridge with streets along side Guatemala Central America

Popular with backpackers and – surprisingly – cruise ships, Guatemala remains relatively undiscovered by families. Which is shame, because this Central American country is the perfect place for a family spring break vacation on a budget.

This is a country filled with mysterious ruins, colourful Colonial cities, lots of volcanoes and even more adventures. Start your holiday in Antigua, pretty town filled with cobblestones streets and painted homes. Affordable hotels are plentiful but you can also rent a house here and many people do, choosing to stay for weeks, or even months, to learn Spanish.

Other places you must visit include Chichicastenango. Located in the Guatemalan highlands, this towns is famous for its weekly market, one of the largest and busiest in Central America.

Lake Antigua, once described as “the most beautiful lake in the world” is another one of the country’s highlights. There are lots of towns dotted around the lake, many of them offering budget accommodation and food options.

Guatemala’s star attraction, however, is Tikal. You can drive from Guatemala City to Flores, the gateway to Tikal, by car. This route takes around 8 hours. Alternatively, you can fly from Guatemala City to Flores, although this will be more expensive. However, you choose to travel, however, don’t miss these most magical of Mayan ruins when visiting  Guatemala with kids .

32. Costa Rica

Manuel Antonio Costa Rica view from above beach teal water white beaches trees

A super fun, not to mention inexpensive spring break trip for families is Costa Rica! This Central American country is a few hours flight from Southern US locations (like Miami, Houston or Los Angeles).

Pro tip: set up a flight alert from your home airport to San Jose, Costa Rica on Google Flights to find the best deals. If you can be a little flexible with your dates (like a Wednesday – Wednesday trip), you’ll find better pricing.

Despite being a small footprint, Costa Rica has many regions to visit. If you want resorts, beaches and shopping, head to Tamarindo. For outdoor adventures and nature, you’ll want to explore all the best things to do in Monteverde .

My family love the beach, so we’re all about the best beaches in Manuel Antonio . This region also offers abundant wildlife and cheap activities like visiting the Manuel Antonio National Park, bringing your own snorkeling gear and snorkeling off the beach, and visiting waterfalls.

To further reduce your cost and make this an amazing cheap spring break trip, rent a vacation property that includes a kitchen and make some or most of your meals. For families, it’s cheaper to rent a car than to get transfers from the airport to different areas.

Costa Rica is one of the best family destinations for spring break, and one you’ll want to check flights prices ASAP!

33. Ecuador (unexpected and cheap family spring break trip)

cheap spring break trips for families view of Ecuador landscape with mountains and trees with some clouds in sky

While many travelers are initially drawn to visit Ecuador because of the Galapagos, a notoriously expensive destination, mainland Ecuador is extremely budget friendly, with plenty of natural beauty and adventure activities perfect for a family getaway.

So skip the Galapagos and visit the mainland Ecuador if you’re looking for spring break ideas for families on a budget!

Ecuador’s major cities perched in the Andes like Quito offer breathtaking views and plenty to see and do for all ages. A favorite of the top things to do in Quito includes the Teleferico cable car that whisks visitors to the top of a dormant volcano for a breathtaking view of the city and surrounding valleys.

A visit to Ecuador’s beautiful jungle, just a few hours north of Quito, is the perfect affordable and memorable getaway for parents and adults alike.   Visit Mindo, Ecuador  in the cloud forest for plenty of inexpensive adventure travel experiences perfect for children.

There are countless ways for children to meet wildlife in the jungle, including visiting a butterfly sanctuary and watching hummingbirds. A popular tubing excursion along a gentle bubbling river is both exhilarating enough for children to enjoy and relaxing and safe enough for parents as well.

Easy waterfall hikes to swimming holes are another way for families to enjoy Ecuador’s natural beauty together.

To the south of Quito is one of the most gorgeous landscapes, and a hike to get there! The Quilotoa Lake hike and Quilotoa Loop is one of the most incredible adventures you can have as a family. Adventurous souls only!

34. New Zealand

New Zealand landscape with purple flowers teal lake and mountains in distance

New Zealand is the perfect place to visit with a family. It’s safe, exciting, and contrary to popular belief, super affordable! Plus, during spring break it’s the end of summer in New Zealand which makes for the perfect weather for exploring the great outdoors.

The best way to travel New Zealand on a budget is to go on a family road trip in a motorhome. This way, you can camp for free (or very cheap) each night as well as cook your own meals. Simply rent a motorhome and start your journey from where you fly in (Auckland is the cheapest destination to fly to in NZ.) Avoiding domestic flights will be a big budget saver as well!

On top of that, the best activities in New Zealand are free too. National Parks are free to visit and all of the most amazing places are natural attractions.

Even in tourist hot-spots like  Queenstown, there are tons of things to do  and many of them are family-friendly and budget-friendly. Stick to hikes, waterfalls, lakes, natural hot pools, beaches, and you’ll be sure to have one of the best spring break vacations possible!

35. Cape Town, South Africa

view of mountain ridge with town near coast

If this is your  first time travelling in South Africa , you’ll be surprised by how friendly and accessible Cape Town is, especially if you’re from an English-speaking country. Spring break is a particularly good time to visit for families , as the weather is wonderful, but the summer rush (Dec-Feb in the southern hemisphere) has largely died down.

Visit the touristy V&A Waterfront for great views of the harbour and Table Mountain, then make your way to Sea Point or Camps Bay for more affordable meals and beautiful views.

Going up Table Mountain is a must. Take the cable car or, if you have older children, hike up the mountain instead. The views at the top are spectacular.

Hire a car to get the most out of Cape Town. The drive over Chapman’s Peak is stunning!

Go to Cape Point where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet, stopping for a picnic on the way. Keep out for baboons – they have a nasty habit of trying to steal your food. Also visit Boulders Beach, a sheltered cove with huge rocks and a large colony of penguins.

Other activities of note are the beautiful Kirstenbosch Gardens , the Two Oceans Aquarium, and visiting the fishing villages and beaches near False Bay.

Cheap spring break trips for college students and families are not hard to come by if you know where to look.

March and early April are an ideal time to visit the southern United States , the Caribbean , and Central America . Those looking for beautiful beaches and a seaside atmosphere have plenty of affordable choices, even in some of the most popular classic spring break destinations.

Bávaro Beach, Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

There are also several excellent alternatives that cost less than the high-profile destinations but offer just as much, if not more, excitement and relaxation.

For ideas on the most affordable places to visit, see our list of the best cheap spring break destinations.

1. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

2. cancún, mexico, 3. miami beach, florida, 4. south padre island, texas, 5. nassau, the bahamas, 6. orlando, florida, 7. punta cana, dominican republic, 8. montego bay, jamaica, 9. daytona beach, florida, 10. destin, florida, 11. puerto vallarta, mexico, 12. las vegas, nevada, 13. washington, d.c., 14. moab, utah, 15. new orleans, louisiana, 16. savannah, georgia, 17. austin, texas, map of cheap spring break destinations.

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

With 60 miles of white-sand beaches, it's no wonder that Myrtle Beach is South Carolina's top beach destination for college students. Since spring break isn't during peak tourist season, rates are lower, but the weather is still great for enjoying all the things to see and do in Myrtle Beach .

You don't have to spend a lot of money to have a good time on the beach, and people-watching is one of the best things to do here. Other inexpensive activities include kite-flying, tossing a frisbee, shell collecting, and, of course, swimming.

Myrtle Beach Boardwalk is where visitors will find most of the tourist attractions and restaurants, as well as a huge selection of resorts and hotels for every budget. This is also where you'll find rental kiosks for water sports equipment, instructors offering lessons, as well as plenty of tour operators who will take you out on the water for a cruise.

After the sun goes down, tourists use the SkyWheel as a landmark and reference point, its one million lights an unmistakable beacon on the sand. A ride on this massive gondola-style observation wheel is great for photos, and especially stunning at sunset.

If you're looking for a break from the sun, check out Ripley's Aquarium , where you can walk through a reef, watch a mermaid show, or even swim with the sharks. If you've got kids with you (or just want to feel like a kid again), head to WonderWorks to see fun science exhibits, play laser tag, and zipline 1,000 feet above the water.

If you're looking for evening entertainment, be sure to check out Dolly Parton's " Pirates Voyage " dinner show. It's a crowd-pleaser for all ages, so be sure to get your tickets ahead of time.

Aerial view of Cancún, Mexico

Cancún is one of the world's most iconic spring break spots, a planned resort destination with 21 kilometers of white-sand beaches and plenty of resort options for families.

Visitors have plenty of options for inexpensive things to do, from sunbathing and people-watching to snorkeling the huge barrier reef that protects the narrow island. Evenings are full of options, too, with plenty of live music and events happening year-round.

If you need a break from the sun, visit the inexpensive and fascinating Cancún Mayan Museum (Museo Maya de Cancún) and the adjacent El Rey Maya Archaeological Site (El Rey Zona Arqueológica) to get a look into the ancient Mayan world.

Land-lovers who want to get up close to marine life can check out the Interactive Aquarium Cancún , and anyone looking for a truly unique experience should visit the Cancún Underwater Museum , a submerged sculpture exhibit.

Ocean Drive, Miami Beach, Florida

Despite the notoriously high prices of the trendy Art Deco Historic District and South Beach area, college students can easily plan a cheap spring break trip by booking a hotel on the northern end of the barrier island and taking advantage of the free trolley to get to and from the area's hot spots.

South Beach is one of Florida's top beaches , often crowded but always a great place to find good food and nightlife.

Just over the causeway in downtown Miami, tourists will find even more shopping and restaurants, as well as free entertainment at the Bayside Marketplace , a huge outdoor mall. It's also home to the Skyviews Miami Observation Wheel , which provides passengers with gorgeous views over the city and Biscayne Bay from the comfort of air-conditioned gondolas.

This makes for excellent skiing and snowboarding conditions, combining the thrill of winter sports with the more comfortable early spring temperatures.

Moreover, most Colorado ski resorts stay open until April, giving you plenty of time to hit the slopes during spring break. Whether you're a seasoned skier or looking to try something new, Colorado's snowy peaks offer an exhilarating escape for those who aren't quite ready to let go of winter.

Take your pick among Anaheim, Los Angeles, Orange County, Newport Beach, Palm Springs, or even San Diego—historically, all of these SoCal hotspots make for a cheap springtime getaway when you look at average round-trip airfare and nightly hotel rates.

Historical spring temperature averages show a good chance at warm weather to enjoy the beaches, amusement parks, and hotel pools before the summer heat sets in. For the best spring travel prices, avoid peak travel dates like school breaks and popular music festivals. Spring also brings wildflower season (blooms vary year-to-year) to destinations like Palos Verdes , Antelope Valley , and Malibu .

While you’ll miss the crowds of foreigners by coming in the spring, you won’t miss out on local festivals and attractions. Saving money is a big perk of spring travel to Southeast Asia, too. Hotels reduce rates, airfare prices drop, and vacation packages may be hundreds less.

South America

buenos aires neighborhood

South America’s Southern Hemisphere location means it experiences fall during the Northern Hemisphere’s spring, with many of its countries offering pleasant temperatures in the 60s and 70s. Although spring weather is preferable to the area’s cooler winter (our summer), fewer tourists from the north visit at this time. So, if you can break away from work or school a little earlier than everyone else, you can take advantage of better weather and lower prices.

Consider a trip to Argentina, where the peso typically fluctuates in favor of the U.S. dollar. Capital city Buenos Aires boasts a strong European flavor, with cobbled streets, chic restaurants, festivals, and a lively atmosphere. Make the most of your time on the continent and extend your trip to Patagonia and Chile.

For a beach spring break trip, look to affordable Colombia, Guyana, and Brazil, particularly Sao Paulo .

April: best cheap spring vacations.

Costa Rica’s high season stretches into April, but if you can wait to visit the Central American country until late in the month, or even in May or June, you’ll find deals worth your while. Expect savings on airfare starting in mid-April, and similar trends at hotels and resorts.

The trade-off? More rain, though the tropical showers are often limited to afternoon or evening. And more than in other destinations, Costa Rica’s “green season” actually has a following of visitors who prefer the lush landscapes and smaller crowds of the spring and summer months. It really is the perfect backdrop for zip-lining in the Cloud Forest or spotting three-toed sloths.

7 Bucket-List-Worthy Ways to Experience Ecotourism in Costa Rica

While Hawaii never really experiences a low season, winter and summer tend to be more popular times to visit the islands, so the spring (as well as the fall) tends to be a cheaper season to come. And, the weather between April and June is actually better than the in winter, with less rainfall and pleasant temperatures ranging from about 68 to 86 degrees. In springtime, water temps are higher and the waves are calmer.

Accordng to the  Hawaii  Visitors  and  Convention  Bureau , spring airfares average about half the price of summer or winter airfare, and hotel rates drop $15 to $20 per night. Plus, thanks to plenty of new air routes, you have more nonstop flight options than ever before to get here. Now all you have to do is decide which Hawaiian island you should visit for a spring vacation.

This Is the Best Time of Year to Visit Hawaii

Lounging on beach, surfing, and exploring the islands’ undersea and volcanic wonders are always in season, but visit in the spring to see unique events like the Big Island’s Merrie Monarch Festival in April, and the Waikiki Spam Jam (Oahu). Another destination with almost guaranteed cheap airfare this time of year is Florida. Of course, you’ll want to avoid peak travel dates to amusement parks and cities like Orlando, but in general, round-trip flights to Florida can be inexpensive this time of year.

Consider a trip to Miami, where you can compare flight deals to both Miami and nearby Fort Lauderdale. If you’re renting a car, you can search for Florida flight deals farther afield: West Palm Beach Airport is about two hours away and sometimes yields better prices.

Pro Savings Tip:  Instead of staying on South Beach, stay downtown to avoid the Miami Beach resort tax.

Or plan a cheap spring vacation to Florida to a lesser-known destination. With a top-rated beach, cute surrounding towns, and access to nature activities like forest walking trails and kayaking, Navarre Beach is an underrated Floridian spring break spot.

Is it too late to book my spring break trip? 4 things to know about pricing, destinations

cheap places to travel spring break

With the holiday craze behind us but summer still feeling so far away, travelers have a glimmer of hope in the spring. Many are itching to get away during spring break.

This year, more spring breakers are looking for adventure, like scuba diving or hiking in places like Australia, Peru or Costa Rica, according to travel insurance platform Squaremouth’s recent press release.

Also influencing spring break travelers? Social media influencers and set-jetting –  visiting the locales of their favorite shows or movies – CEO of HotelPlanner Tim Hentschel told USA TODAY. Think Italy following the latest “White Lotus” season.

“The typical spring break has changed … now you’re seeing record demand for parks and destinations for giving back (with volunteer work),” Hentschel said. However, affordability and price are also top of mind for most Americans hoping to book a spring break trip this year, according to Hopper’s 2024 Spring Break Travel Outlook .

There’s some good news for travelers: prices won’t be too bad if you book strategically.

Learn more: Best travel insurance

Here are four things you need to know about spring break travel for 2024:

1. Prices have plateaued

This year, spring breakers are in luck. Both domestic and international round-trip airfare are cheaper than last year, according to Hopper. Flights to Europe have gone down by 7% to an average of $640 and flights to Mexico and Central America dropped by 11% for an average of $447.

Although demand for spring break travel is up, prices won’t be too high as there’s enough supply to go around, Hentschel said.

“They’re not paying more than what they paid last year,” Hentschel said.

Where travelers will have to fork up is accommodations, especially during peak weekends. In the U.S., the average nightly hotel rate over spring break is $242. South of the border in Cancun, Mexico, hotel rates average $339 per night, and in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, the average nightly rate is nearly $500. Across the pond in London, hotels are averaging $440 per night.

◾ Spring break hack: Start your weeklong vacation midweek instead of the weekend to save as much as $150 on a domestic roundtrip airfare, Hopper recommended. Trips that start or end on a Tuesday or Wednesday can be up to 38% cheaper than Saturday or Sunday travel.

2. Am I too late to book my spring break trip?

Whether domestic or international, airfare should be booked one to two months in advance for the best price.

When it comes to hotels, especially in coveted vacation destinations, “you get your best deals when you can book 30 days in advance,” Hentschel said.

Those who are more flexible on where they’re going can hold off a bit. According to Hopper, travelers who are basing their trip on price point rather than the hotel amenities or destination itself can wait between 10 and 14 days before check-in to get the best deals.

◾ Spring break travel hack: Purchase travel insurance within one to two weeks of making your initial trip payment for the best coverage. “Buying earlier opens up the door to time-sensitive travel insurance benefits,” said James Clark from Squaremouth. “It really maximizes the amount of benefits to you as well.” These often include the ability to cancel your trip for any reason or preexisting conditions waivers.

3. Most popular spring break destinations

According to Hopper, here are the most popular spring break destinations:

◾ Orlando, Florida: $205 average airfare, $175 average hotel rate

◾ Las Vegas: $295 average airfare, $178 average hotel rate

◾ Miami: $251 average airfare, $339 average hotel rate

◾ Fort Lauderdale, Florida: $216 average airfare, $288 average hotel rate

◾ Nashville, Tennessee: $186 average airfare, $257 average hotel rate

International:

◾ Cancun: $403 average airfare, $339 average hotel rate

◾ London - $643 average airfare, $440 average hotel rate

◾ Punta Cana: $466 average airfare, $477 average hotel rate

◾ Los Cabos, Mexico: $431 average airfare, $431 average hotel rate

◾ Tokyo - $1,368 average airfare, $351 average hotel rate

Cancun without the crowds: Meet Isla Mujeres, a quieter Mexican getaway

4. Cheap spring break destinations to consider

“I know everyone wants to go to Italy nowadays, but you can easily fit in multiple trips to these budget-friendly destinations for about the same cost that you can go to Europe,” Clark said. “I think people need to think about if they want to go on one big trip or multiple little trips.”

For some cheaper beach destinations, trade Cancun for Jamaica, and Puerto Rico for the Dominican Republic. Consider replacing Miami or Fort Lauderdale for Tampa.

best cheap places to visit in Europe in Spring

Lagos, Portugal

Lagos, Portugal is one of the most beautiful and inexpensive spring beach destinations in all of Europe. Lagos is located in Southern Portugal in the Algarve region on the Atlantic coast. It offers stunning coastline, sea caves, sandy beaches, and a great nightlife, making Lagos  a perfect budget friendly getaway.

The best free thing to do in Lagos in the spring is to head to the beach. There are many amazing beaches around Lagos, such as Praia de Dona Ana, Praia dos Estudantes, and Praia do Camilo.

In addition, there is a beautiful coastal cliff walk to explore that is about 4 miles long. This walk will let you see the coast and its many beaches, natural arches, and grottoes.

Get out on the water and see the coast from a different perspective by taking a well priced  kayaking tour . You will also get to visit caves and snorkel.

Finally, head to the Lagos Museum to learn more about the cultural heritage of the area and see the inside of the ornate church of Igreja de Santo Antonio for just a couple of euros.

Budget-Friendly Food And Restaurants

Lagos in general is an affordable travel destination so it is not hard to find cheap places to eat or affordable bars. Go to Jukebox Tapas for an amazing dinner of tapas that won’t break the bank. This highly rated restaurant fills up fast, so get there early or make a reservation.

For a cheap and quick lunch, Beats and Burritos has fantastic burritos or bowls with vegan options.

Average highs range from 64 °F to 70 °F in March, April, and May with evening lows in the mid to high 50s F. You can expect only a sprinkling of rain a few days each month.

Best Way To Reach Destination

If you’re planning a trip to some other stops in Portugal such as Lisbon or Porto, it would be easiest to fly into Lisbon’s International Airport and take the 4 hour bus ride to Lagos.

But if you plan to only visit Lagos and neighboring seaside towns, you can fly into Faro Airport which is about 90 km or 55 miles to Lagos center.

Inexpensive Accommodation

Kate from Kate Roams The World says, “You’ll find plenty of cheap accommodation options in Lagos, whether it be in a hostel, hotel, or a homeshare.

Safari Beach Guest House  is a highly rated hostel walking distance to town and beaches that also has private rooms available.

Ocean View Lagos  is a bed and breakfast a little further from the center of town, but it has a balcony with a gorgeous view and an outdoor pool.”

best affordable city break in Europe in Spring

Bologna, Italy

Italy isn’t the cheapest country to visit in Europe, but if you pick where to visit wisely you will still be able to enjoy it for a very reasonable price. One place that budget-travelers usually enjoy in spring is Bologna, for it has a great selection of cheap things to do and low cost eateries.

There are plenty of low priced things to do in Bologna . It will cost you just a few Euros to climb up the Torre degli Asinelli, which is the top attraction in the city, and from where you can admire stunning views.

Free things to do include walking along the beautiful porticoes the city is famous for (they provide shelter from the rain in the winter months, and from the fierce sun in the summer months), and taking in the lovely views from the Finestrella, a window overlooking a canal in Via Piella.

The cathedral is also free to visit, in case you want to check out one of the most beautiful churches in the city.

One of the best restaurants in town that serves great food at moderate prices is Trattoria Da Cesari. It makes the best tagliatelle al ragu in Bologna!

For an even more budget-friendly experience, stand in line for your table at Trattoria dall’Orsa, in the university area. You will be sharing a table with other locals or tourists and feasting on delicious lasagne.

Finally, grab a mortadella sandwich at Mo Mortadella Lab and be amazed at how delicious it was and how little you paid for it.

Bologna is a great place to visit in the spring, when the cold of the winter months is only a memory, but the heat and the humidity of summer have not arrived yet. In April, you can expect sunny days and temperatures around 17°C (62.6°F) during the day. March is a little cooler and in May, you will get average highs of 74 °F.

As for rain, there will be a little each month over a few days.

Bologna is the capital of the Emilia Romagna region and very well connected to the rest of Italy (and Europe) by both plane and train. Bologna Airport is served by a number of budget airlines and close to the city, which you can reach by train or bus too.

Bologna is also an easy train ride from many other larger (and more expensive) cities in Italy. You can be there in 40 minutes from Florence, one hour from Milan and 1.5 hours from Venice.

Claudia from My Adventures Across The World says, “For a cheap place to stay look into the Ghetto Ebraico, Bologna’s Jewish Quarter. Hostel Il Nosadillo is a good option.”

best inexpensive vacation in spring time in Europe

Budapest, Hungary

You might not guess it due to its grandeur and popularity, but Budapest is actually one of the best cheap cities to visit in Europe and a fantastic spring holiday destination.

The capital city of Hungary, Budapest is split in two by the Danube River, the Buda side of Budapest is on the West side of the river and the Pest side is to the East.

In Hungary, the official currency is the Hungarian Forint. Some restaurants and shops in Budapest accept Euros as well, but they’ll usually give you a bad exchange rate. So it’s best to pay in Forint if you want to save money.

There are many  amazing things to do in Budapest for free . The best free thing to do in springtime is to marvel at the stunning architecture of the Hungarian Parliament Building. It’s located right at the shore of the Danube River, and it’s one of the most beautiful parliament buildings in the world.

Another great free thing to do in Budapest is to walk up Gellért Hill to the Liberty Statue where you will have a panoramic view of the whole city.

You can also explore the most famous square in Budapest, Heroe’s Square, which is centred around the towering statue of archangel Gabriel. Heroe’s Square is also the gateway to Budapest’s most famous park, simply called City Park.

In the Park, you can spend many hours discovering all of its hidden gems including admiring the most beautiful castle in Budapest, although it’s not the most famous one. The most famous castle is Buda Castle, which used to be the royal palace and is now a museum.

One of the best economical restaurants to try a traditional Hungarian deep-fried flatbread is Retró Langós Budapest.

The best time of year to visit Budapest is late spring. In May, the average temperature is a sunny 61°F, so it’s not too hot to walk around and explore. If there is a cooler day, you can always warm up in one of the relatively cheap thermal baths that can be found in Budapest.

March and April sees temperatures in the 40s and 50s Fahrenheit. There will be a little bit of rain each month.

Budapest is easy to reach as it has an international airport and a special bus line connecting the airport and the city centre. There are also many low-priced bus and train connections to neighbouring countries

Tina from Veganderlust says, “A very affordable place to stay is the Metropolis Budapest Hotel . It’s a highly-rated bed and breakfast in a fantastic central location. The perfect accommodation for exploring Budapest in spring.”

best affordable holiday in Europe in spring

El Tiede National Park, Spain (Canary Islands)

El Teide National Park in Tenerife in the Canary Islands is one of the most stunning and budget friendly spring vacations to take in Europe. The entrance to “El Teide national park” is free and you can either reach the park by public transport or car.

The Park looks like a Martian landscape of indescribable beauty. With its volcanic rivers of petrified lava and craters housing the third largest volcanic structure in the world (25,000 feet or 7500 meters oceanic floor) and the highest point in Spain (12,000 feet or 3718 meter above sea level), the Park was declared a World UNESCO heritage site in 2007.

When visiting the Park in springtime you will have the chance to see the “Red Tajinaste” in bloom, an alien looking flower endemic to the Park.

There are several hiking routes in the Park and you can also hike to the Teide summit. In order to reach the summit you need to request a permit in advance or hike up at night as there are no guards until 8:00am (this is the way the local people do it). The permit is for free, however due to the large amount of requests you need to book at least a couple of months in advance.

If you are looking for more stunning hikes, your visit to “El Teide National Park” can be combined with hiking in La Gomera, the second smallest of the Canary islands and one of the best hiking destinations in Spain.

Puerto de la Cruz is home to several reasonably priced Guachinches (Canary Islands local restaurant), such as “El Bodegon Puerto Cruz” or “Tasca Guachinche el Buenavistero.

The average temperature in each of March, April and May is around 68°F with lows around 61°F. There is practically no rain.

In order to get to Tenerife you can fly to Tenerife South international airport. The best place to stay when visiting El Teide national Park is Puerto de la Cruz, a beautiful coastal town in Tenerife, that you can reach by public transport from the airport.

Pilar from Travel The World Pages says, “I recommend staying in “ La Carabela ” apartments in Puerto de la Cruz. The apartments are equipped with a kitchen and a nice terrace overlooking a garden with a pool and a breathtaking view over “El Teide.”

best inexpensive getaway in Europe in spring time

Berlin, Germany

Germany is unlikely to ring up as the cheapest place to travel. But you might be surprised to learn that Berlin is one of the most affordable cities in Western Europe while constantly crowned as the hippest capital city in the world. It makes for one of the best reasonably priced spring break getaways in Europe.

The vibrant capital city of Germany offers many inexpensive things to do. So if you are looking for a European city break in spring time, start planning a Berlin itinerary !

Exploring the city’s rich history costs almost nothing. It is free to visit iconic historical landmarks like Brandenburg Gate, Checkpoint Charlie, the Holocaust Memorial, and the Nazi Book Burning Memorial. Consider a free walking tour (with a gratuity) to learn more about the history of Berlin’s significant WWII and communist past.

Berlin is also known as the art and cultural hub in Europe, attracting artists from all over the world. You can see colorful and artistic murals at the East Side Gallery (Berlin Wall). However, with a quick Google search, you can discover eye-catching street art in the hidden alleys all over the city. Strolling the streets and appreciating the art? Absolutely free!

Although Berlin is hardly a foodie capital, delicious street food adds to the city’s budget-friendly experiences. Try Berlin’s unique currywurst, Doner kebab, and Berliner donuts. Maybe chow it down with a refreshing Berliner Weisse beer to quench your thirst.

If you visit Berlin in spring, bring a warm jacket and an umbrella. Spring brings transitional weather from the chilly winter to progressively warmer conditions. The average temperature ranges from 5℃ (41℉) in March to 17℃ (63℉) in May. However, it fluctuates unpredictably with occasional rainfall.

While Berlin is located further east, close to the border of Poland, it is easy to reach. The capital city is well connected with Europe via flight (fly to Berlin Brandenburg Airport) or train. Once you get there, Berlin boasts an excellent public transportation system, making it easy and affordable to navigate the city.

Chloe from Travelogue says, “With the abundance of affordable accommodation, travelers can also find comfortable and economical options in Berlin. Consider staying in East Kreuzberg or Friedrichshain for the vibrant nightlife and wallet-friendly hotels.”

best budget friendly escape in Europe in spring

Corfu, Greece

Located in the Ionian Sea, the Greek Island of Corfu offers a paradise escape with warm weather, sandy beaches, and an old cultural heritage.

If you’re into history, beaches, or shopping, Corfu offers it all. Look no further than the old town of Corfu, a UNESCO World heritage Site to explore its rich history. By touring one of its fortified forts, you’ll appreciate its importance as a defense city.

Head to Achilleon Palace to continue the history tour. Once the summer home of Empress Elisabeth of Austria, the Palace exudes opulence with marble, statues, and ornate furnishings. Outside, its grounds are equalling impressive and offer gorgeous vistas of the Ionian Sea. It only costs a few euros to visit.

For outdoor enthusiasts, hiking and exploring Corfu’s coastline provides an inexpensive activity. While some sea caves are only reached by boat, tours to get there are cheap. Canal d’Amour might be Corfu’s most notable landscape, with hidden caves in the “Channel of Love.”

In northwestern Corfu, you’ll find Porto Timoni, and two back-to-back beaches connected by a strip of land. It takes a hike from Afionas to reach it, but it’s so worth the effort. Due it its remote location, you won’t find any services or facilities, but that adds to the area’s charm and affordability.

The Liston Gastrotheque offers great coffee and a reasonably priced breakfast, and you can enjoy it on the patio soaking up the area’s ambiance.

Expect average high temperatures of between 61 F and 75 F between March, April and May, with little rain. In spring, you can enjoy 14-1/2 hours of daylight. Many enjoying swimming in the ocean although it may be a little cool for others.

There is lots of rain in March, but hardly any in April and May.

Most vacationers arrive at the  Corfu cruise port  as part of a Mediterranean cruise or fly into Corfu International Airport. From the airport, the town of Corfu is under 2 miles (3 km) away. Alternatively, you can take a ferry from the mainland, but it takes two hours.

Karen from Forever Karen says, “For well priced accommodation, the Grecotel Eva Palace includes breakfast, a private beach, and access to a full-service spa. Its crisp white guest rooms are typical of a Mediterranean theme, and many offer ocean views.”

best low priced city break in spring in Europe

Bordeaux, France

Bordeaux is known as the wine capital of France and sits in the Gironde department in the southwest of the country. It offers beautiful weather in spring.

But it’s not just wine that makes it such a great city to visit. First, comes its proximity to the Dordogne, one of the most historic regions, and the stunning Atlantic coast. Secondly, there’s the food.

It’s earned a reputation as one of the very best ‘foodie’ cities in the world, which is no mean feat. And there is something for every budget. Accordingly, it is one of the best spring escapes in Europe for budget travelers.

The best way to see Bordeaux is by foot, and the city hosts a few free walking tours where payment is by tips at your discretion. From wine and cheese tasting tours to historical walking tours, these are great for learning more about the city.

If you’re visiting Bordeaux over a weekend, then on the first Sunday of every month, other than July and August, it’s free to visit the museums in Bordeaux . Two you won’t want to miss are Les Bassins des Lumières, a digital art museum in an old World War II Bunker, and Cité du Vin, an architecturally designed wine museum spread over 8 floors with stunning views of the city.

The best way to get around the city is with the Bordeaux City Pass , not only does it give you unlimited access to public transport but free entry into 15 museums.

When eating out in France, try and find the spots where the locals eat. If you go with the Plat de Jour, a set daily menu, you’ll find it’s the cheapest way to eat and also ensures you get great food.

A great place to try in Bordeaux is Le Petit Commerce, a favourite with the locals serving great food without breaking the budget.

The weather in spring is good and generally sits at between 60 – 64 F degrees, but you can easily get temperatures of up to 77 degrees Fahrenheit with lots of great sunshine. You can expect around 2″ of rain over 7 days in each of the spring months.

Getting to Bordeaux is easy. The city is served by Bordeaux-Merignac International Airport and is just 8 miles from the city centre. An inexpensive shuttle runs every 30 minutes that takes you to the main train station in Bordeaux.

Kylie from Life In Rural France says, “For a good central hotel that’s well-priced, consider Mama Shelter . It’s fun, colourful and stylish and has 97 rooms designed by Philippe Starck, a renowned French architect. It also happens to have a rooftop bar with the best views over the city.”

best reasonably priced European trip in spring

Prague, Czech Republic

For budget-travelers, there’s no better city to visit in Europe in the spring. Picture cherry blossoms lining historic streets, the start of warmer weather, and lush green returning to the city. With its rich history, stunning architecture, and budget-friendly options, Prague offers an unforgettable experience for low cost prices.

As you wander through the cobbled streets, make sure to set aside time to see Prague’s historic sights. You can’t miss Charles Bridge, Prague Castle, Old Town Square and Klementinum. I always recommend  taking a tour in Prague  to understand the complex context and history behind these important landmarks.

Many of the sights offer inexpensive admission, but if you want to stay on budget, one of the best things to do in Prague is simply walk around the city. There’s no better way to see Prague — wander through the cobblestone streets, walk by the water, and experience Prague the way locals do.

Be sure to stop at Letna Beer Garden and grab a cheap pint of beer – some of the best in the world. Pack a picnic and find a cozy spot amidst the park’s lush greenery — the view is simply spectacular.

My daughter spent a few months in Prague living and going to school. When I visited her, we spent 3 days exploring popular areas of Prague as well as hidden gems where only the locals know to go. This included some fantastic restaurants! For more information about my 3 days in Prague, please see An Epic 3 Day Itinerary In Prague .

Prague, more than most European capital cities, offers fantastic food at an affordable price. Venture to the lively areas around Vinohrady or Holesovice, where you’ll find a plethora of restaurants and local markets offering delectable inexpensive options. Favorites include Paprika, Kantyna or Lasagneria.

If you’re planning to visit the Czech capital, expect mild weather , lots of sunshine, and the occasional shower. Average highs during this time range from 55°F to 64°F (13°C to 18°C).

Visitors can fly into Václav Havel Airport Prague, the city’s main international airport. From there, convenient public transportation options will whisk you to the city center in approximately 30 minutes. You can also arrive by train from neighboring cities like Vienna or Berlin.

Samantha from Undiscovered Path Home says, “Travelers looking to keep to a budget should look to stay outside of the center. The Karlin, Vinohrady and Holesovice neighborhoods tend to be much more reasonably priced than hotels in Old Town. You can also find great deals closer to the center in New Town. The  Mosaic House Design Hotel   has a great location — and an affordable price tag. “

best moderately priced destination in Europe for spring break

West Yorkshire, England

While England is usually associated with sights like Big Ben, red double-decker buses, and Buckingham Palace, the country offers so much more for those willing to venture beyond London .

Northern England has an identity that is entirely its own, and West Yorkshire is one of the most historically and culturally significant counties. The rolling green hills, lush moors, and ancient cobblestone streets are home to some of the most quintessentially English attractions and experiences that many visitors to the UK don’t even know they’re missing. In addition, in spring, the weather is mild and inviting.

From major cities like Leeds and Bradford, to small countryside villages like Haworth and Hebden Bridge, there are many interesting  things to do in West Yorkshire . You can expect to find many affordable museums and historic ruins as well as free attractions like parks and gorgeous hiking trails. All in all, it is one of the best inexpensive holidays in Europe in spring.

Literature fans will want to pay a visit to the Brontë Pasonage Museum in the village of Haworth. This is the home where the Brontë sisters spent their entire lives, and where they wrote  Wuthering Heights ,  Jane Eyre , and all their other works.

Venture into town for lunch or some light shopping, or enjoy one of the gorgeous hikes and walks in the area. Take a casual 2¾ mile walk to the Brontë Waterfall, or, for advanced hikers, the 10.3-mile trail through Keighley Moor.

For something a little more fast-paced, the city of Leeds offers many activities perfect for both individuals and families. The Leeds City Centre is a bustling business district broken into several historic quarters packed with shops and restaurants. Just a 15 minute drive away is the iconic ruin of Kirkstall Abbey, which dates back to 1152!

The neighboring city of Bradford, once called “the wool capital of the world”, was hugely significant during the Industrial Revolution. To learn more about the fascinating innovative history of Bradford, you’ll want to visit the Bradford Industrial Museum, the Salts Mill, and East Riddelsen Hall.

When you get hungry, there are many restaurants and markets to explore in the area. The Corn Exchange building located in the Leeds City Centre is home to a variety of unique eateries, with something for everyone!

Walkers Little Pie Shop in Bradford is my go-to for traditional English meat pies at affordable prices, although they also have soups, sandwiches, and more.

Summer is typically when most tourists visit West Yorkshire, hoping to catch the gorgeous heather in bloom, but it can get quite hot and muggy during the summer months. Spring is a great time to visit as there are less tourists and the weather is more mild, typically ranging from the mid 40s to high 60s. While there are a lot of warm, sunny days in spring, there’s always a chance of light rain.

While you could easily spend several days exploring all that West Yorkshire has to offer, if you get an early enough start, it can also work as a day trip from London or Manchester.

If you’re flying directly to West Yorkshire, the Leeds Bradford (LBA) Ariport is the closest, and the Manchester Airport is just over an hour away by car. While public transportation is available in the cities, I recommend renting a car so you can easily explore the charming nearby villages as well.

Nena from The Seaside Calls says, “ Ashmount House in Haworth is perfect if you prefer something a little more peaceful, away from the hustle and bustle of the city.”

best spring vacations in cheap European spots

Sofia, Bulgaria

Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, is an excellent budget travel vacation destination in Europe and a top recommendation, especially for spring. With its historical landmarks, inexpensive activities and excursions, affordable dining options, mild weather, and convenient, low-cost transportation, Sofia offers a fulfilling yet affordable travel experience.

Located in the Balkans, Sofia offers a unique blend of old and new, and Eastern and Western influences. There are so many amazing  things to do in Sofia . In addition, Sofia offers many free or very inexpensive activities.

The city boasts a variety of historical sites, such as the impressive Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and the ancient Roman ruins of Serdica.

Walking through the streets of Sofia, visitors can enjoy the lively atmosphere and discover many treasures like the Banya Bashi Mosque, the St. George Rotunda Church and Sveta Nedelya Church. Thanks to its relatively small size, the most beautiful places are easily accessible on foot.

The sprawling National Palace of Culture Park is a tranquil oasis in the middle of the city, ideal for picnics, leisurely walks or even renting bicycles to explore the green spaces.

Free city tours, led by knowledgeable guides, provide an excellent introduction to the city’s history and culture.

Visiting a wide variety of museums, such as the Central Mineral Bath, the Earth and People National Museum and the National Archaeological Museum, can also be an enjoyable low cost experience.

best spring beach destination in Europe that is inexpensive

Nerja, Spain

Nerja is a lovely coastal town in southern Spain famous for its crystal-clear water and pristine beaches. It is one of the best cheap beach destinations in Europe in spring.

Kayaking in Nerja  is one of the most popular activities and in spring, there will be fewer crowds than in the summer months. You will pass secluded beaches, sea caves, and waterfalls cascading into the sea. While spring is before the swimming season officially starts, you might be lucky and encounter really hot days, and then it is wonderful to dip into the water as well.

You might also want to visit Nerja Caves, one of the most visited tourist attractions in Spain. The pre-historic cave can be visited on a self-guided tour and the highlight is the world’s largest stalagmite, towering 105 feet (32 meters) high.

Spring is also a great time of the year to go hiking in the mountains towering behind Nerja. You can take on Pico del Cielo for the most impressive 360 views of the coast and the mountains, but be aware that the last couple of hundred meters are very steep.

Eating out in Nerja is generally affordable. If you like Indian food, Mom Nerja is an amazing place, otherwise, there are also kebab joints where you can grab something on a budget. But if you really want to save some cash, head to the Tuesday market where you can find fresh produce.

Nerja is usually sunny in spring with temperatures around 77 degrees Fahrenheit. However, there might be rainy days too, though typical spring rain often takes place at night and clears up in the daytime.

The closest airport is Malaga International Airport (AGP) and there are buses from Malaga to Nerja that only take an hour and a half by bus and 50 minutes by car.

Linn from Amused by Andalucia says, “ Hostal Andalucia is a great budget friendly place to stay in the center of Nerja.”

best affordable spring city break in Europe

Amsterdam, Netherlands

The vibrant and picturesque city of Amsterdam is at its best during the spring months. And, despite being a popular capital city, this European city can easily be visited on the cheap.

Amsterdam, the capital and largest city of the Netherlands, is known for its charming canals, historic architecture, and progressive attitudes. The city (and the Netherlands as a whole) is also known for its tulips. The brightly colored tulips begin popping up in late March and are in full-bloom by mid-April – perfect for a spring visit!

There are so many things to add to your Amsterdam bucket list before your visit. Taking a canal cruise is a must when visiting Amsterdam. The canals are one of the city’s most famous attractions, and cruising on one lets you see the city from a unique perspective all the while learning more about Amsterdam’s history.

There are dozens of canal cruises from which to choose, including budget-friendly daytime sightseeing cruises to pricier options that serve dinner and champagne.

Amsterdam has a rich history, and one of the most important historical sights in town is the Anne Frank House. During your visit, you’ll be able to see the actual secret annex where the Frank family hid during World War II.

The experience is somber, but it’s something you shouldn’t miss out on if you’re visiting the city. Admission to the Anne Frank House isn’t free, but adult tickets are a reasonable price in light of the experience. It is well worth adding it to your travel budget. Make sure to book your tickets well in advance of your visit as they always sell out.

For a nearly free way to see Amsterdam, take a free walking tour. Freedam Tours, the best tour company in the city, offers free guided walking tours that visit tons of Amsterdam’s top attractions and landmarks like the Royal Palace, Dam Square, the Red Light District, and more.

Not only are you getting to see the sights, but your guide will also tell stories about the sights. You will learn about Amsterdam history as well as what it’s like living in the city. Keep in mind that while tours are free, the guides do work for tips – make sure to budget a few euros for your guide.

Amsterdam’s food scene ranges from Dutch specialties (think pancakes, bitterballen, and raw herring) to Indonesian cuisine, with everything in between. If you want to try a bit of everything without spending a lot, head to the Albert Cuyp Market. The market is open Monday-Saturday and is home to vendors selling homemade stroopwafels, fresh poffertjes (mini pancakes), raw herring, and more.

The weather in Amsterdam can vary greatly during the spring months. In March, high temperatures average around 49° (lows around 36°). April temperatures warm up a bit with highs around 56° (lows of 40°), and May temperatures are the warmest of the spring months with highs in the low 60s and lows in the high 40s. Make sure to pack a warm coat and dress in layers so that you’re prepared for changing temperatures throughout the day.

Schiphol Airport (AMS), Amsterdam’s international airport, is a major gateway into Europe and many US-based airlines have non-stop flights to AMS. From the airport, the Amsterdam Centraal station in the city center is just a 20-minute train ride.

If you’re taking the train into Amsterdam from another European city, you’ll probably also arrive at Amsterdam Centraal. From there, you can easily walk or take the metro or tram to your accommodation.

Sydney from A World In Reach says, “Hotels in Amsterdam can be a bit pricey, but there are still several affordable options. For the best combination of budget-friendly yet private, consider getting a private room at a hostel. Many hostels, like ClinkNOORD , have private rooms that rival those in a boutique hotel, but at a much cheaper price.”

best low cost spring getaways in Europe

Ksamil, Albania

Ksamil is one of the most up-and-coming locations in the Balkans. Located in the southern end of Albania, this is an inexpensive European destination that you’ll want to visit in spring before the summer crowds. Between the white sandy beaches, clear waters, and endless activities, it should be no surprise why this destination is now termed the “Maldives of Europe.”

One of the best  things to do in Ksamil  is island hop between its four uninhabited islands. While this is better enjoyed in the later spring months, it’s one activity you won’t want to miss. You can take an inexpensive boat taxi, official tour, or jet ski to reach the islands.

In addition to island hopping, a must-see while in the area is Butrint National Park. This UNESCO World Heritage Site contains scenic ruins, landscapes, and an unique history. The entrance cost is still only a few dollars which is quite a steal for such a popular site.

Like most things in Albania, dining out is reasonably priced. You can eat comfortably for less than $15 USD in Ksamil with drinks and your main course included. Some budget-friendly restaurants in the area include Veranda By Apollonia, Bella Vista Ksamil, and Fresh Fish Clean & Grill.

The weather in Ksamil is generally favorable all year. During spring, temperatures can reach upwards of the high 50s (°F) in March, mid-60s (°F) in April, and mid-70s (°F)in May. While there is a chance of a few rainy days, most days will be sunny, and only some with cloud cover.

Regarding getting to Ksamil, Albania’s only international airport is in its capital, Tirana. To journey to Ksamil while in Albania, you have several options from the airport. These include taking a taxi, bus, or rental car, with the bus being the most popular option.

Each transportation option will take between 4-5 hours. If you choose the bus, you must first go to Saranda and then take a separate bus from Saranda to Ksamil, which will be around 20 minutes.

Alternatively, if you’re coming from Corfu, you can take the one-hour ferry from Corfu to Saranda and then take the bus to Ksamil.

Tamara from My Elated Odyssey says, “For lodging, there are several different budget-friendly options in Ksamil, some that won’t even cost more than $50 USD per night. Ksamil is small, with most accommodations located around the center and coast, the two best areas to stay. Some great options include Vila Mario , Vila Vasiliu Ksamil , and Golden Hill Ksamil .”

best budget friendly European small towns for a spring getaway

Bruges, Belgium

A great affordable and interesting place to visit in Europe in spring is Bruges in Belgium. Located in West Flanders, Bruges offers unbelievable architecture and charming culture.

One of the best things you can do is just wander around this quaint city, or even take a free walking tour. The charm is in the city itself.

However, if you are looking for something more organized to add to your  Bruges itinerary take a boat ride down the canals. This will allow you to learn more about Bruges and get to see the city from a different perspective. It is relatively cheap to do.

After, visit the Basilica of the Holy Blood which is a gorgeous Roman Catholic church that has a relic of Christ’s blood. This is free to visit and, for a few Euros, you can also visit the museum.

If you want an escape from the city centre, take a walk to Minnewater (Lake of Love) for peaceful canal views, ducks, and swans.

While walking around Bruges, be enamored by the 16th-century architecture in Grote Markt and grab a Belgian waffle at Chez Albert, which is one of the most popular places to enjoy this inexpensive treat in the city.

Expect Bruges to be slightly on the cooler side in spring with temperatures that start at 49 °F in March, 54 °F in April, and 64 °F in May. Therefore, packing layers is important. Bruges is known to have sprinkles of rain in the spring months, but the sun usually comes out at some point during the day.

The closest airport is the International Airport Ostend-Bruges, however, it is usually better to fly into Brussels Airport. From Brussels airport, you can take the train to Bruges. The train ride is around one hour and very easy to do.

Sam from Find Love & Travel says, “A fairly affordable hotel that is highly rated is the Hotel Ter Brughe which is eight minutes away from the market square.”

best budget-friendly escapes for spring time in Europe

Istanbul, Turkey

As the only city that spans two continents, Istanbul has a lot going for it, from bustling bazaars to colorful streets, a hodgepodge of culture, and 2,500 years of history. You definitely get the best of both Europe and Asia here!

Located in northwestern Turkey, Istanbul is the most populous city, and the cultural, financial, and culinary capital of the country … but not the actual capital. (That honor goes to Ankara).

Spring is the  best time to visit Turkey  thanks to its low prices, pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and blooming scenery. Spring is also when Istanbul welcomes the Tulip Festival, where thousands of colorful tulips bloom in parks across the city — Don’t miss it!

To get you excited, here are three of the best budget-friendly things to do in Istanbul.

First, enjoy a relaxing ferry ride. No need to take a Bosphorous tourist trap tour! Just hop on an official ferry run by the city (called Şehir Hatları), and enjoy seeing the landscapes of Istanbul pass by your window — all for less than the price of a latte.

Favorite ferry lines include the Halic Line (that goes through the Golden Horn), Kadikoy to Fener (this line goes to the colorful houses of Balat), and the Adalar Line (which goes to the Prince’s Islands).

Second, stroll across the Galata Bridge. Connecting Sultanahmet to Beyoglu, this bridge offers excellent views of both sides, and is an especially wonderful spot to watch the sunset. For extra effect, buy a simit (a Turkish-style bagel) and admire the dozens of fisherman that gather on both sides.

Third, visit the Pera Museum. One of the best museums in Istanbul, the Pera Museum is an interesting mix of Turkey’s history, art, and culture spread across five floors. You can see one of the most famous paintings in Turkey, called The Tortoise Trainer. Best of all, it’s free every Friday evening.

For tons of budget-friendly restaurants and excellent street food stalls head to Osmanaga or Yeldegirmeni area of Kadikoy (they’re within walking distance of each other).

Cafe Çakmak in Kadikoy is a fantastic place to get Turkish breakfast, as it’s a sweet family-run place with authentic flavors (the owners cook everything themselves) at affordable prices.

You can expect temperatures around 46 F in March (albeit, with the possibility of snow!), a sunny 54 F in April, and a pleasant 64 F in May.

Istanbul is extremely well-connected to the rest of the world, and is also a popular layover destination. You’ll most likely fly into the main Istanbul airport (IST), although there’s also Sabiha Gokcen (SAW), which is a hub for domestic and budget airline flights. From the airports, you can take a budget-friendly airport bus or metro (about 1 to 2 hours), or a taxi.

Luda from Lets Travel To Turkiye says, “When choosing an accommodation, we highly recommend avoiding Sultanahmet, which is the most touristy and overpriced area. There are tons of options that are much lighter on your wallet!

For budget-friendly areas, Kadikoy and Cihangir are excellent. You can also choose Beyoglu, which is fantastic if you want to be close to Sultanahmet but with fewer tourist traps.

Some fantastic hotel options include The Havana Residence and House of Tulpan in Beyoglu, or The Marist in Kadikoy.”

best outdoor nature spots in Europe in spring for budget travelers

Bled, Slovenia

Bled is the gateway to the Julian Alps of Slovenia . This region of the country offers magical landscapes, whimsical afternoons by the water, fairytale architecture and, for those who want it, extreme outdoor adventures. It’s not only one of the most stunning regions in Europe, but one of the most underrated and affordable when it comes to spring travel in Europe.

Bled is, in itself, a super cheap destination, especially for Europe. Being on the border with other Alpine countries, Slovenia feels much more like a forgotten section of the Alps than a relic of Yugoslavia. With that in mind, it’s easy to find plenty to do here for either free or budget friendly prices.

Bled Castle is the star attraction. Overlooking the lake this ancient fortress dates back to 1004 and provides not only the perfect viewpoint but an interesting look into the history of the town too.

Renting out a boat and setting sail for The Church of the Assumption on Lake Bled Island is a must-do when visiting. It’s the perfect way to take in your entire surroundings as well as an opportunity to learn some of the local folklore surrounding the church.

Just outside of town, a short bike ride will take you to the majestic emerald-green waters of Vintgar Gorge. For a mere few Euros, you’ll be transported into a wonderland of crystal clear trickling waters and towering granite cliffs.

I went to Ljubljana, Lake Bled, Postojona Cave, Predjama Castle, and Vintgar Gorge in Slovenia with my husband and two teen/young adult daughters. It was an extraordinary trip and we loved all of these experiences. What was particularly great was that none of these destinations were far from each other. For more information, please see Ljubljana Old Town, Slovenia: 7 Of My Favourite Things and Postojna Cave and Lake Bled, Slovenia: An Epic One Day Roadtrip .

Bled is a small town with a good selection of places to eat. A favorite is Pizzeria Rustika for its affordable and high-quality food (remember, Slovenia borders Italy!). They don’t only offer pizza either, the local Balkan meal of “Cevapcici” (grilled sausage) is particularly tasty here.

The weather in spring in Bled is somewhat unpredictable being in an Alpine region. However, this offers the opportunity to experience some amazing conditions in just a few days. In April you can have blazing sun and blue skies one day and wake up to a winter wonderland of fresh snow the next.

In terms of temperature, it can range from anywhere between 31-49F in March and 47-66F in May, so pack accordingly.

Fly into Ljubljana Airport and pick up a rental car or taxi for the 30 minute drive. Alternatively, you can take a bus with one transfer that will take you about an hour.

Nic from the Roaming Renegades says, “For moderately priced accommodation, we highly recommend Ribno Alpine Hotel . This Alpine-style chalet with mountain views really sets the vibe for the trip. The cozy wood-panelled en-suite rooms come with garden access, a terrace and even a sauna. So it’s the perfect place to warm up if the temperature does drop!”

These beaches offer perfect opportunities for snorkeling and relaxing by the shore. They are also easily as they are just a few minutes from Ios Chora.

Another thing to do is take a stroll through the charming streets of Ios Chora, with its small winding alleys, picturesque blue dome churches, and delightful boutique shops.

If you love archaeology and history, Ios Island is home to archaeological sites such as Homer’s tomb, where you can explore ancient ruins and connect with the island’s rich cultural heritage.

During spring, there are quite a few cafes and restaurants already open on the island. You can find a range of cheaper restaurants by the port on Yialos Beach. They serve lots of different local dishes from gyros to seafood. In spring, the island is more quiet so you shouldn’t have an issue finding space at any restaurants.

Temperatures average around 60 F to 73 F in the spring during the day. This is warm enough to enjoy the beach and for some, go snorkelling. At night, temperatures tend to drop and the wind tends to rise, so you’ll want to bring a light sweater with you. These spring temperatures are great for exploreing the island without turning into a sweaty mess like you do in summer!

The easiest way to get to Ios is to fly to Santorini and then take a ferry to the island as there is no airport on Ios.

Mary from Be Right Back By Mary says, “There are a few hotels on the island. One of the best ones is Liostasi Hotel and Suites . There are also cheaper ones in Ios Chora.”

Remember to check the weather conditions before booking to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience. The main tour company will cancel tours if the sea conditions aren’t favorable, but still, you want the best weather possible to enjoy your trip.

While there are a few interesting but slightly pricey restaurants on the island, you can savor affordable and delicious local cuisine at cafes (pastelarias) offering a variety of cheap food options. Make sure you try the famous pastel de nata if you have a sweet tooth.

If you’re seeking an affordable restaurant experience, you can try Comme Ci Comme Ça in the charming town of Lajes.

Expect consistent average highs of 66 °F in spring with around 2″ of rain over 7-8 days.

To reach Pico Island, first fly into Ponta Delgada Airport on São Miguel Island, the largest of the Azores. From there, catch a domestic flight to Pico Island’s airport for a convenient and efficient transfer.

If you want to explore the other islands, you can take the ferry from Pico to Sao Jorge and Faial.

Isabella from Boundless Roads says, “If you opt for accommodation away from the main villages you can find low price apartments that also allow you to cook to save money.”

best inexpensive European city to visit in spring

Krakow, Poland

Krakow, Poland is a great cheap European holiday destination for springtime. You can enjoy small crowds and its most infamous landmarks and experiences without issue.

First, a visit to Wawel Castle is a must and tickets only cost a few dollars. This is one of the most important monuments in Poland, with tombs of kings in its underground crypt, as well as beautiful gardens on the outside. Located right above the Wisla River, it is one of the top things to see and do in Krakow.

Krakow Old Town should be a stop on everyone’s list. It is Europe’s largest central square, with hundreds of cafes and restaurants surrounding the square. The center has a cloth hall, Sukiennice, which is currently used as a shopping area, with booths lining both sides as you enter.

In Old Town, you will also see St. Mary’s Basilica, and surrounding fountains and statues as well. It is a great place to spend a few hours without spending any money. However, it can be even better sitting in one of the cafes, enjoying a cafe and treat, so you can people watch.

Auschwitz-Birkenau is one of the most visited spots in Poland, and there are plenty of tours from Krakow to Auschwitz that will take you there. It is free to enter, however, entry times are limited after a specific time for tourists, so a tour from Krakow is your best bet.

When it comes to affordable dining, Kazimierz district is a fantastic choice. There are a number of budget-friendly restaurants serving traditional Polish cuisine. A local tip to get cheap Polish food is to find “bar mleczy,” low cost Polish dining spots that locals frequent.

In the spring, Krakow experiences mild and pleasant weather, making it an ideal time to visit. The average temperature ranges from 50 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit. However, Poland’s climate is temperamental so it may rain during your visit. Be sure to bring a rain jacket.

To reach Krakow, you’ll most likely fly into John Paul II International Airport, located about 7.5 miles west of the city center. From the airport, it’s super easy to get a taxi (and quite inexpensive).

Alternatively, you can take the train or bus directly to Krakow’s main train station, which is well-connected to the city’s public transportation network.

Diana from Travels In Poland says, “Krakow has plenty of accommodation options for various budgets. Two great affordable options include Hotel Stary or The Bonerowski Palace .”

best affordable spring vacation in Europe

Cagliari, Italy (Sardinia)

Cagliari , the capital of the island of Sardinia, is a lovely, budget friendly spring escape in Italy, easy to reach via budget flights from a number of cities in Europe.

This is one of the most underrated cities in Italy, but it has an incredible amount of things to do, attractions, and budget friendly restaurants and accommodation options.

The main attractions in town are all located in the four historic districts. Castello is where you will find the Cathedral, which is free to visit, and the annexed tower, which you can access for a small fee. Also located in the Castello district you will find the well curated archeology museum.

The beautiful Stampace is home to the Roman Amphitheatre. You can admire it for free from the hill of Viale Sant’Ignazio. Not far from it, the Botanical Gardens are a must see too.

Plan to also walk around the Villanova and Marina district to get lost in the maze of colorful streets.

When you are done, head towards Calamosca beach (it’s an easy bus ride from Piazza Matteotti) and find the trailhead to the Sella del Diavolo, from where you can admire stunning views of the gulf and Poetto beach below. It’s a moderate hike and the trail is easy to follow.

Finally, if you visit in the spring, you should not miss the chance of going for a walk in Molentargius Nature Reserve. You can access it from Poetto beach (the main gate is close to the Ospedale Marino bus stop). It’s free to visit and you can admire its’ pink flamingos.

Budget travelers will appreciate the incredible choice of easy going eateries in town. A mere $22 USD will get you a gourmet pizza and a craft beer at Framento, one of the best pizzerias in Italy. You can also have a delicious burger at Bombas, which prepares gourmet burgers using strictly local ingredients.

Spring is a great time to visit. The temperatures are mild and there are lower chances of rain. If you visit in March, April or May, you can expect sunny days and temperatures between 15°C and 23°C (that’s between 59°F and 73.5°F) during the day.

From Cagliari airport, it is an easy 7 minutes train ride to the center of town.

Claudia from Strictly Sardinia says, “Stay in the historic center to have easy access to all the attractions. Stampace is usually a safe bet as it is close to all the bars and restaurants but nicely tucked away from all the chaos. You can opt to stay at La Dolce Cagliari , a nice locally run guest house.

Alternatively, Hostel Marina in the Marina district, is another great option for budget travelers.”

best small city for a spring escape in Europe

Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Mostar, a city in southern Bosnia and Herzegovina, is perhaps one of the country’s most popular tourist destinations. For good reason, as Mostar and its’ surroundings offer a wide range of amazing sights and the prices are well below the European average. Mostar is therefore a perfect European springtime escape for a trip on a low budget.

Mostar’s most famous landmark is the Stari Most or Mostar Old Bridge, a centuries-old stone bridge connecting the two banks of the beautiful Neretva River. The bridge was originally built in the 16th century, commissioned by the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman. Stari Most regularly hosts events when young men accept challenges and jump off the bridge into the Neretva River.

The area around Stari Most is also full of local vendors and restaurants serving specialities of Balkan cuisine, so it’s worth spending more time there.

Another famous attraction in Mostar is the Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque, which is located not far from Stari Most. The mosque is the oldest mosque in Bosnia and Herzegovina and from the minaret you can enjoy a magnificent view of the city of Mostar.

Not only is the city centre of Mostar stunning, but there are also plenty of beautiful places to visit in the surrounding area. If you visit Mostar, take time to visit the Buna Spring and Dervish House in the nearby village of Blagaj, and the Kravica Waterfall in Studenci.

When in Mostar,  don’t miss the Bosnian specialities, which are very similar to other Balkan dishes. Restaurant Šadrvan, for example, is close to the attractions and offers very tasty Bosnian dishes at good prices. Or try the URBAN taste of orient for spectacular dishes with a perfect Mostar view from its terrace.

In spring, the weather in Mostar can be unpredictable, but it is generally pleasant. It is mostly sunny with occasional rain or wind. March can still be a bit cold, with daytime temperatures around 55-60°F, but April and May are a great with temperatures between 65-80°F.

Mostar is most easily accessible by car, but public transport is also available. You can take a bus to Mostar if your flight arrives in Dubrovnik airport. The journey takes around 3 hours.

If you arrive at Sarajevo airport, there is a train service from Sarajevo to Mostar that takes approximately 2 and a half hours.

Adrienn from Travel Tip Zone says, “Even if you want to stay in Mostar, there are plenty of very good quality hotels available at incredibly good prices. Among the cheapest hotels we recommend is Shangri La Mansion . Even four star hotels such as Hotel Carpe Diem or HA Hotel Mostar can also be booked at very cheap rates.”

best city beach holiday in Europe for a cheap spring break

Nice, France

The French Riviera may be known as a luxury destination but it can actually be pretty affordable. Nice is the perfect example of that. It’s one of the biggest cities on the French Mediterranean coast and has a variety of accommodation types to fit any budget.

One of the best free things to do in Nice is to climb Castle Hill, a hillside park where the military citadel used to be located. Follow the monumental staircase and you’ll arrive at the first viewpoint, overlooking the Promenade des Anglais. It’s the iconic palm-fringed boulevard that lines the beach in Nice and stretches out for miles. The easternmost viewpoint on Castle Hill overlooks Port Lympia, the picturesque harbor.

Another popular free activity is exploring the Old Town of Nice, called Vieux Nice. This maze of cobbled streets lined by pastel-hued houses is home to some of the best landmarks in the city, such as the Sun Fountain at Place Masséna and the Sainte-Réparate Cathedral at the idyllic Place Rossetti.

Nice is also known for its prestigious art museums. For a very reasonable price, you can get a 4-day ticket to all municipal museums and galleries. This includes the Beaux-Arts Museum, the Matisse Museum and the Archeological Site of Cimiez.

The most popular hangout in Vieux-Nice is the lively Cours Saleya. It hosts a picture-perfect daily flower market and a daily antique market. But you can also find well priced fruits, veggies and local delicacies making it an excellent place to stock up on picnic supplies.

Average highs in springtime are around 62 °F, although it is slightly colder in March and warmer in May. You can expect a little bit of rain each month.

Nice has its own international airport which is located along the Promenade des Anglais. It only takes a 10-minute drive by taxi or tram to reach the heart of town.

Sarah from CosmopoliClan says, “Some of the  best places to stay in Nice  in terms of affordability are the Gambetta and Libération districts. But there are also budget options to be found in or near Vieux Nice.

Hôtel Rossetti is a minimalistic-styled hotel and Le Dortoir Boutique Suites offers beautiful and spacious suites at a very affordable rate. Hôtel de la Fontaine in Gambetta is another excellent option.”

best European spring destination for a budget minded traveler

Cordoba, Spain

Despite being one of the prettiest cities in Spain, Cordoba doesn’t see as many visitors as places like Granada and Malaga, which means it can be a bit cheaper to visit. Located on the Guadalquivir River, Cordoba sits in the heart of Andalusia, and can easily be combined with trips to nearby Seville and Jaén.

In the first couple of weeks of May each year, the  Cordoba Patios Festival  is held in the historic centre. This is when local residents open up their flower-filled courtyards to the public, and you can stroll around visiting dozens of beautiful patios. It’s free, although donations are always appreciated.

Other cheap things to do include seeing the expert riders putting the famous thoroughbred horses through their paces at Caballerizas Reales, and visiting the Casa Andalusí to explore a traditional Cordovan house.

When it comes to eating out, the Bodegas Mezquita is inexpensive and delicious. They have four premises in the old town, with a huge range of traditional tapas and local delicacies to try.

For a cheap and tasty breakfast, head to the cafeteria Don Pepe near the Convento de Capuchinas. They do some of the best churros in town.

Spring is the ultimate time to go, as the weather is sunny, and you’ll avoid the intense summer heat which is just around the corner. Average daily temperatures are 69°F, and rainfall is low, which is perfect for city sightseeing. If it does get hot, there are lots of charming cafés in the old city that serve up refreshing glasses of sangria.

The easiest way to get to Cordoba from overseas is to fly into Malaga and then take the train. There are several rail departures a day with direct journeys lasting around an hour. Trains in Spain are generally comfortable and efficient, and you’ll see some of the beautiful Andalusian countryside during your ride.

Heather from Conversant Traveller says, “When it comes to accommodation, you have a lot of choice in Cordoba. In addition, there are plenty of affordable options if you’re keeping an eye on your budget.

Popular places include Patio de la Plateria, Hostal Palacio del Corregidor and Hotel Riad Lineros 38. All are cheap yet have bags of style to get you into the Cordovan spirit.”

Europe offers a vast array of cheap spring vacation spots for every kind of traveler. Whether you are seeking a city break, some time on the beach or in nature, or you love to explore small towns and villages, there are budget friendly destinations waiting for you. All offer free or inexpensive attractions, affordable restaurant options, and well priced accommodation choices.

Best Spring Break Destinations for Families

Grand cayman.

I’ve visited the Cayman Islands (on complimentary press trips twice) three times now, and I always love it. Our hotel picks are the Ritz-Carlton or the Westin Grand Cayman Resort – both located on Seven Mile Beach in Grand Cayman.

We’ve traveled there with JetBlue Vacations , which is a great option, and also on a cruise excursion. There’s so much to do – but you’ll also want to spend some time on the gorgeous beach. Spring would be a great time to visit.

Keep in mind that these two resorts aren’t all-inclusive vacations, so you’ll want to budget for food and drinks. They are beach resorts though, so you’ll be able to have a family-friendly spring break even if you don’t want to do any activities.

However, if you have the budget, you may want to visit a few local attractions while you are there. We recommend visiting Stingray City, the Cayman Turtle Farm, and Rum Point Beach.

See reviews of hotels in Grand Cayman here .

Turks and Caicos

Another one of my favorite spring break family destinations is Turks and Caicos. It was on my family travel bucket list for years, before I finally had the opportunity to visit. We loved our press trip stay at the West Bay Club, and found that there was so much to do in Turks and Caicos with kids. I have since returned four additional times and would go annually if possible.

It’s a relaxing place to visit, so you’ll want to spend plenty of time at the beach. If you are looking for an all-inclusive resort, one of our all-time favorite places to stay is Beaches Turks and Caicos , which offers 22 restaurants and over 700 rooms.

It’s one of the best places to stay with kids and would be a great family spring break trip.

Read reviews of Turks and Caicos resorts here .

San Antonio – one of our favorite spring break ideas

San Antonio, Texas is a great family travel destination, with lots of things to do with kids. We recently visited San Antonio for a spring break vacation and loved our stay. There’s so much to do with families, and it’s a bit of a hidden gem when it comes to spring break.

The San Antonio River Walk is a must-visit, with things for everyone to enjoy. Of course, I also recommend a visit to the Alamo – here are 4 surprising things when visiting the Alamo.

You can also visit SeaWorld San Antonio , which is open at select times in the early spring. If possible, I’d recommend staying on the River Walk – there’s so much to do there, and it’s easy to walk around for dinner and shopping.

See hotel reviews on TripAdvisor.

Orlando, Florida

Orlando is one of the most popular family vacation spring break destinations, and right now, there is so much going on at Walt Disney World. You can stay on or off-property, and we have recommendations for the best hotels for your Walt Disney World vacation. Remember to book early, so that you can make your dining reservations well in advance.

There are lots of other great things to do in Orlando as well, including other theme parks, nature activities, the Orlando ICON Park, and so much more.

If you’d rather stick with a more relaxing beach vacation in Florida , the Fort Myers area may be the best destination for you.  If you fly into Fort Myers, there are lots of places you can stay just a short drive away. Consider visiting Marco Island , which is a relaxing and fun place to stay.

While I just enjoy staying on the beach, the Dolphin Study Eco-Tour and Cruise is a must-do. If you are visiting during March, you may be able to catch a spring training baseball game in the area. Find hotels in the Fort Myers area on TripAdvisor .

Other Destinations for a Florida Spring Break for Families

Florida is one of the most popular 2024 family spring break destinations in the United States. It is filled with other great spring break destinations for families, including Amelia Island , Miami Beach, Sarasota, Clearwater Beach , Tampa , and Destin/Fort Walton.

Whether you want to relax on the beach, experience nature, or explore the local area, there are lots of options. We especially love the beaches on the Gulf Coast of Florida. The best Florida spring break destinations for families offer waterfront activities, museums, and other fun activities.

San Diego, California is a great option if you are looking for a relaxing beach vacation combined with some family activities. Attractions like the San Diego Zoo, Disneyland , and Legoland are just a short drive away. During our stay last year, we stayed at the Bahia Resort Hotel on Mission Bay and loved both the location and the hotel.

The weather in San Diego is fairly consistent throughout the year, so there’s never a bad time to visit. You could easily spend a whole week there. Check out other hotels in San Diego here .

Save on a Southern California trip from Get Away Today by using the code  FTM10.

Spring break is also a fantastic time to enjoy a vacation in the Los Angeles/Anaheim area. In addition to Disneyland Resort (the very first Disney park), you’ll also find Knott’s Berry Farm and Universal Hollywood (with the brand new Super Nintendo World).

Save money on your theme park tickets by booking through  Get Away Today . They offer vacation packages as well as individual ticket sales. Disney travel agents don’t charge guests an extra commission and can help you find deals.

Phoenix, AZ

Phoenix is one of our favorite warm-weather destinations. There are so many fantastic, kid-friendly resorts. Although you may want to spend much of your time at the resort, there are so many other things to do in the area. This includes botanical gardens, zoos, aquariums, hiking trails, and so much more.

If you visit the greater Phoenix area in March, you have the opportunity to check out a variety of spring training baseball games. The Cactus League teams all play within a relatively small radius, making it easy to see multiple teams, regardless of where you are staying in the area. Find the best hotels in Phoenix at TripAdvisor.

The Azores, the closest and one of the most affordable European destinations is a temperate 65-70 degrees in April.  With family activities like whale watching, hiking, biking, gardens, forts, and museums, you’ll find plenty of things to do.

Azores Airlines has traditionally offered great deals in the spring from many US destinations. You could also visit the Azores on the way to mainland Portugal, or just choose to visit the Azores.

Washington DC

We visited Washington DC on a family spring break getaway a few years ago. It’s perfect for kids who are old enough to appreciate the history and culture of our nation’s capital.

Of course, my kids’ favorite spot was the International Spy Museum, which moved to a new facility. You can stay right in the city or in one of the many nearby suburbs. We chose to stay in National Harbor, MD and enjoyed our stay. Read more about things to do in Washington DC here.

Family Cruise

Would you rather visit several Caribbean destinations?  Then choose a cruise – perhaps a Disney cruise leaving from Florida and stopping in the Bahamas?

I love Castaway Cay – Disney’s private island in the Bahamas – and think it’s great for families. We’ve done both the Western Caribbean Itinerary and the Eastern Caribbean Itineraries on the Disney Fantasy – both are fabulous.

You could also choose to take a shorter cruise as well. We enjoy the 3 or 4 day trip on the Disney Dream, which leaves from Port Canaveral and goes to Nassau and Castaway Cay.

Puerto Rico

You won’t need a passport to travel to Puerto Rico, yet it’ll feel like a world away. Spring is a great time to visit because it falls in between the winter busy season and the rainy season. We visited a few years ago in February, and the weather was absolutely beautiful. I’ve since returned in March and also found perfect weather.

It’s so easy to go from the airport to your resort since you don’t have to go through customs. Since it’s a domestic flight, you also won’t have to arrive at the airport too early or bring a US passport. It’s also a beautiful island with many fun activities beyond the pool and beach.

I recently visited Bermuda and was so impressed with this beautiful island. Located just a 2-hour flight from Boston, Bermuda is a small island with lots of great restaurants, shops, and resorts.

Kids will love touring Crystal and Fantasy caves , located near the airport. There’s also an aquarium, a fort, and so much more. Be sure to save some time to visit the beautiful beaches. We especially enjoyed Horseshoe Bay, a public beach located in the Southampton area of the island.

Just keep in mind that the weather in Bermuda is more similar to the Carolinas than to the Caribbean. So it won’t necessarily be hot in the spring.

New York City

I love visiting New York City every time of year, but April is a great time to visit. There’s so much to do in New York, regardless of the ages of your kids. My kids love the Central Park Zoo, and we always try to see a Broadway show during our trips.

There are also countless museums, the Empire State Building, Circle Line boat tours, and so much more. You’ll want to check out these kid-friendly restaurants in NYC as well.

Music City has become a popular family vacation destination in recent years. Want to learn more about music? There’s the Grand Ole Opry, the Country Museum Hall of Fame, and the Ryman Auditorium – all of which are fun to visit. I love staying at the Gaylord Opryland , a huge resort with atriums, restaurants, and so much more.

This beautiful, historic city offers so much for families. From museums (including the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace Museum) to the nearby beaches ( Tybee Island ), Savannah is a great destination.

In your opinion, what are the best places to go for spring break? Do you prefer to hang out at the beach, or stay active?

From the South Carolina coast to a Utah mountain town, here are the best places to go for a spring vacation.

cheap places to travel spring break

When you think of spring break, what comes to mind? Maybe it's a family road trip, a college beach vacation, or late-season skiing out West. Whether your imminent break is from work or school, time away from the daily grind is always a good idea. Spring break is not only an opportunity for a getaway, it's a reminder that you've made it through the dreary post-holiday winter months.

Here are a few of the best spring break destinations in the United States to help you start planning. We've got vacation ideas for everyone — from families traveling with younger kids to couples looking for a romantic spring getaway — in almost every region of the country.

Destin, Florida

On Florida's Emerald Coast, Destin (along with Fort Walton Beach and Okaloosa Island) is a popular spring break destination for families. Daily high temperatures in the 70s make it a prime spot for boating, fishing, and relaxing on the fine white-sand beaches. The warm Gulf waters are ideal for aquatic activities like snorkeling, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and parasailing. There's also a kid-friendly boardwalk featuring a zip line and rock-climbing wall. In addition to Destin's luxury resorts , you can choose from campgrounds, bed-and-breakfasts, and vacation rentals.

Cannon Beach, Oregon

Early spring weather is in the chilly mid-50s at Cannon Beach, but it's still a fun time to explore tide pools and watch seabirds. Every April, the resident puffins return to their roost on Haystack Rock after about eight months away.

The beach is dog-friendly, and leashes are not required, so your pet can enjoy playing on the sand or joining you for a hike. There's a great selection of hotels, including luxurious oceanfront properties, plus vacation home rentals and campsites. When you want a break from the shore, you'll find shops, restaurants, wine tasting rooms, spas, and theaters in town.

Park City, Utah

Not everyone is looking for a beach vacation, so for the powder seeker or mountain lover, Park City charms with its artsy downtown and historic silver-mining town vibe. Late-season snow sports typically last through spring at Park City Mountain and Deer Valley , but it should also be warm enough for hiking, mountain biking, and strolling along Main Street. Families with kids will be happy to know there's bowling, ice skating, zip lining, tubing, and more to keep little ones entertained.

South Padre Island, Texas

This barrier island resort town off the southern coast of Texas is popular among college students and families alike because of its warm weather, water sports, and nature. Paddleboards, kayaks, Jet Skis, and kite boards are available for rent. Kids can learn about some of South Padre Island's most-loved residents at Sea Turtle, Inc. or work on their sandcastle-building skills. The college-student party crowd will be found dancing and drinking to DJ sets at bars like Louie's Backyard .

Palm Springs, California

Warm weather arrives early in the Southern California desert, making Palm Springs and nearby desert cities attractive destinations for spring breakers. Kids can be kept busy at the hotel pool or with a visit to The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens . A ride to the top of Mt. San Jacinto on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway is fun for nature lovers of all ages. Boasting both fast food and upscale dining, budget motels and luxury resorts, hiking and high-end shopping and galleries, this desert oasis has something for any kind of traveler.

Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

Hilton Head Island attracts beach bums from all over the Midwest and East Coast with its 12 miles of Atlantic shoreline and waters ideal for fishing, parasailing, kayaking, Jet Skiing, and sailing. On land, you can bike, play golf, and go horseback riding. The weather is warm, with highs in the 70s, but not too hot to spend entire days outside.

Families who take their dogs along will be glad to know that until Memorial Day weekend, leashed pets are welcome on the beach. If there's time, a side trip to nearby Savannah or Beaufort provides even more Southern charm.

Jackson Vance/Travel + Leisure

Pleasant spring weather would be enough to attract visitors to this Southern city, and there's so much to do that no one will even notice there's no beach nearby. The Georgia Aquarium is the largest in the United States and features sharks, dolphins, sea lions, seabirds, and more. The World of Coca Cola offers tastings and other experiences in the city where the soda is headquartered. The Chick-fil-A College Football Hall of Fame will delight university students, and there's a Lego Discovery Center for kids.

New Orleans

The Big Easy is known as a party destination, but families with kids should keep New Orleans on their spring break radar, too. The historic city has an aquarium, zoo, and several standout museums. The National World War II Museum , Old U.S. Mint , and Louisiana Children's Museum mix entertainment and education. For the college students looking for a party scene, there's no shortage of bars in the French Quarter.

Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina

One of America's best beach towns, Wrightsville Beach offers water sports, restaurants, shopping, and history. Stay oceanfront or near the harbor in a family-friendly hotel or a beach house rented with friends. Surfing, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding are popular, and scuba divers seek out the area's sunken ships and reefs teeming with marine life. Even if it's not swimming weather just yet, you can still enjoy being on the water with a sightseeing cruise or fishing excursion. Visitors can learn more about the area at a number of historical sites and museums.

"The Valley of the Sun" is a well-deserved nickname for the Greater Phoenix area, which also includes Scottsdale, Mesa, Tempe, and Chandler. Even in the spring, this part of the Sonoran Desert sees temperatures in the high 70s and even 80s. Lounge in the sun by a pool, take a kayak or stand-up paddleboard on the Salt River, or join a jeep tour through the rugged terrain. With everything from five-star resorts to motels, campgrounds, and dude ranches, there's an accommodation option for every travel style and budget.

Yes! You can visit Greece without spending thousands of dollars! Zakynthos is a beautiful island in Western Greece that is famous for its crystal-clear waters, secluded beaches, and beautiful villages.

One of the many great things about Zakynthos is that you can enjoy the beautiful beaches for free.

In addition to swimming and sunbathing, you can also go snorkeling, sea kayaking, and even scuba diving. For more budget-friendly activities, you can take a hike to the top of Mount Skopos or visit the heavily photographed Shipwreck Beach for stunning views of the coast.

7 Cheap International Family Vacations This Summer

6 istanbul, turkey, average cost to visit: $882 per week.

For those who are seeking insanely picturesque views and an entirely new and rich culture to dive into this summer, Istanbul, Turkey is the perfect budget-friendly option. Because of the lira exchange rate in Turkey, you can travel here for a very low cost.

There is so much to see and do in Istanbul on both the European and Asian sides, so it's recommended to spend at least four to six days here to experience everything.

During the summer, beat the heat by visiting Istanbul's numerous beaches or one of the 13 museums in the city that are completely free to visit!

If you're planning to visit the mosques in Istanbul, read up on a guide on what to wear and everything that needs to be covered! The dress code varies for men, women, and children.

5 Seaside, Oregon

Average cost to visit: $929 per week.

Located on the West Coast of Northern Oregon, Seaside is a beautiful beachy town that's perfect for an affordable summer vacation.

With a three-mile-long beach, seaside promenade, and an adorable downtown, Seaside is never short of fun and affordable activities for all ages.

After swimming in the ocean and relaxing on the sand, rent a bike to explore the town's scenic promenade or go for an evening hike in and around the town to a lookout of the Pacific Ocean.

Seaside is also a next-door neighbor to Cannon Beach, so I highly recommend taking a day trip to see the famous Haystack Rock and enjoy its quirky downtown shops!

4 Bali, Indonesia

Average cost to visit: $516 per week.

When people think of Bali, turquoise waters, rice fields, and ancient temples are usually what come to mind. But did you know that this tropical island in Indonesia is also extremely budget-friendly to visit?

For an average of $500, travelers can stay in high-quality beach hotels and resorts in Bali for all budgets and enjoy every aspect of the area's rich and inviting culture without breaking the bank.

Bali is every nature lover's dream. The island is filled with beaches and beach clubs, waterfalls, hiking trails , ancient temples, and rice terraces that will keep you busy for days on end!

A great way to immerse yourself in the Balinese culture is to explore the cuisine. Food and drinks in Bali are very inexpensive and even most cooking classes are an average $20-30 per person.

17 Things You Should Know Before Booking A Trip To Bali

3 tallinn, estonia, average cost to visit: $712 per week.

Tallinn, Estonia, is Europe's most hidden gem. And not only for its breathtaking views and fairytale streets, but also because of its insanely cheap restaurants, museums, and transportation.

Estonia's capital city sits on the Baltic Sea and is considered one of the most beautiful cities in all of Europe .

Tallinn is also one of the most well-preserved medieval cities. Today, you can wander through the Old Town, walk through the old gates, and explore the museums that feature 17th and 18th-century artifacts. Tallinn also offers free walking tours of the city every day that are worth checking out!

Ferries from Tallinn to Helsinki, Finland are available every day and usually cost around $114.

7 European Vacations Under $1,000

2 hội an, vietnam, average cost to visit: $318 per week.

While Hội An is one of the most visited cities in Vietnam, it remains one of the cheapest places to travel in 2024 for summer.

This charming city is known for its ancient architecture, vibrant lantern-lit streets, and mouth-watering street food for an insanely low price.

The cheapest and most efficient way to see Hội An is by renting a bike. For less than $2 a day, you can go on a self-guided tour through the city, the rice fields, and the beaches.

A free activity that everyone can enjoy is the Hội An Lantern Festival , which takes place on the 14th of every lunar month.

1 Cape Town, South Africa

Average cost to visit: $686 per week.

Cape Town is a beloved city in South Africa that is both a bustling urban center and surrounded by breathtaking nature. Not to mention, it's an ideal place for Americans to visit during the summer on a budget.

The summer months in North America are actually the winter months down in Cape Town, which means fewer crowds, cool temperatures, and great value for low prices.

Plus, the winter in Cape Town means you'll have a great chance at whale watching due to the whale migration at this time of year, and the cooler temperatures make it the perfect season for outdoor activities like surfing, paragliding, and hiking the famous Table Mountain .

WalletHub shares this year's perfect getaways that won't break the bank

Erika Mailman

Summer’s just a heartbeat away. If you’re stuck in your cubicle, or you’re a teacher showing movies for the next week or so, or maybe you’re a high-powered CEO getting off your private jet: you’re fantasizing about the beach or a tent pitched in the wilderness...or a visit to the big metropolis you’ve always dreamed of.

According to personal-finance website WalletHub , nearly 82 percent of Americans plan to take a trip this summer (hopefully the remaining 18 percent aren’t traveling this summer because they already took off in the winter!). And close to half of those who plan to travel will take more than one trip (42 percent). That’s a whole lot of us—whether it’s far-flung travel or just renting a weekend space an hour away. We personally love the day trip turned into an overnight trip. WalletHub studied 100 metro areas, using 41 metrics, to come up with its list of the perfect summer getaways, considering our budgets and hopes to have a great time without credit card trauma down the road. The metrics were details like the average price of a two-person meal, the city's tennis courts and beer gardens, and average gas prices: you get the idea. It’s a great way to get a quick look at how a city measures up to others around the country.

This summer, you will want to hit Atlanta , since it is the top scorer on this study. It did well in all categories, including not having many travel hassles and costs, having good weather and a fair amount of entertainment options, and doing well in terms of safety (having low numbers for property damage and violent crime). Take a walk on the BeltLine or visit the Coke museum, and enjoy the best of Georgia’s capital.

Second on the list is Washington, D.C. It scored first for safety and did well in the other categories. With parks, cherry blossoms, historical sites, and an incredible art museum , this city makes for an incredible destination. Did we mention that the Smithsonian museums are free and are open daily except for Dec. 25?

In third place is Orlando, Florida, which fulfills all the amusement park -meets-beach desires you’ve ever had. In fact, Orlando is No. 2 nationwide for best activities (the No. 1 spot is taken by urban Honolulu, which is fourth on this overall list).

Here is the full list of the top 20 summer travel destinations:

1. Atlanta, GA

2. Washington, DC

3. Orlando, FL

4. Honolulu, HI

5. Tampa, FL

6. Austin, TX

7. Philadelphia, PA

8. Chicago, IL
