The Dodge Journey is a mid-size crossover wagon that debuted at the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show , with North American 2009 my sales beginning in March 2008 and European sales to begin in mid 2008.

Identified internally as the JC49 , [2] and sharing an almost identical wheelbase (113.8in) to the outgoing short-wheelbase Chrysler minivans, the Journey shares a modified platform from the Dodge Avenger , [3] features five (or 5+2) passenger seating with four forward-hinged doors, and as with past models of the outgoing short-wheelbase Chrysler minivans, is available with a four-cylinder engine .

As with the Dodge Avenger , the Journey's exterior was styled by Chrysler's Ryan Nagode . [4]

For the CUV's introductory promotion, Dario Franchitti 's No. 40 Dodge Charger carried a "Journey" paint scheme for the 2008 Daytona 500 on February 15, 2008. [5]

Development and mechanical

The available four-cylinder is a 2.4 L (2360 cc, 144 cu in), with 173 horsepower (129 kW) and 166 pound-feet of torque, a version of the Chrysler's GEMA, "world" four-cylinder engine shared with Hyundai and Mitsubishi. [1] [6]

The 3.5 L (3518 cc, 215 cu in) [1] V6 is only available in North America, with the six-speed automatic transmission. Other markets will have the six-speed automatic transmission with the flex-fuel ( E85 compatible) 2.7 liter V6. All wheel drive will only be available with a V6.

A Volkswagen -sourced diesel engine will be available outside of North America with an automatically shifted dual clutch transmission , which may be the first appearance of this transmission. Chrysler performed primary engineering for the dual-clutch transmission with support from long-time partner Getrag, who will ultimately build the transmission in the United States. [7]

During development, Dodge benchmarked the European Ford S-Max , a popular multi-activity minivan. [8]

• Optional booster seats (these are not integrated child seats but are aimed at older children)
• Theatre seating (second row is substantially higher than the first row)
• Third row of foldaway "occasional use" seats (with minimal seat height and legroom)
• Gas mileage: 16-19 city, 23-25 highway (2008 United States Environmental Protection Agency‎ figures)
• Standard (US & Canada) multi-stage front driver and passenger air bags, front-seat-mounted side air bags, three-row side-curtain air bags, standard four-wheel disc anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic stability program (ESP), and electronic roll mitigation, brake assist. [7]
• Traction control, rollover sensing, trailer sway control, tire pressure monitors, and a rear backup camera.

Chrysler manufactures the Journey at the 220-acre (0.89 km 2 ) [3] Toluca Car Assembly, Toluca, Mexico — on the same assembly line as the PT Cruiser [3] .

A Chrysler plant since 1968, Toluca Car Assembly was recently redesigned [10] to employ a Flexible manufacturing system (FMS) that allows simultaneous production of the two distinct vehicles of differing platforms [11] . The neighboring "Chrysler Park" represents a joint venture of eight outside suppliers [10] .

Smaller than the typical mid-sized SUV, this version of the Journey is a dated and mediocre performer. It rides well and is quiet, but that's about all. It suffers from a lack of agility, lousy fuel economy from the optional 3.6-liter V6, a reluctant transmission, and a tiny third-row seat. Poor IIHS small overlap crash-test results add to the long list of demerits.

The 2011 reworking brought a much nicer interior and a better V6, but the lack of agility and still-mediocre fuel economy keep it out of the top ranks. Plus it was more expensive than many better rivals. Poor IIHS small overlap crash-test results and below average owner satisfaction add to the long list of demerits. Three row seating became standard for 2018.  Ultimately, we think you'd be better served looking at something else. The V6 engine and all-wheel drive were dropped in 2020 and the Journey finally came to an end.

Which Used Dodge Journey Trim Is Right for Me?

The Journey is available in four trim levels: SE, SXT, Crossroad, and GT. A four-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive come standard in the three lower trims. A more capable V6 engine and all-wheel drive are available in every trim except the top-of-the-line GT, where they come standard.

The base Journey SE is sparsely equipped for a midsize SUV . Not even Bluetooth comes standard. The SXT doesn’t add much in the way of features. The Crossroad adds a larger infotainment screen and a little more interior versatility. In addition to the V6 engine and all-wheel drive mentioned above, the GT trim has a sport-tuned suspension and several of the comfort features available in the Crossroad trim.

The Crossroad is the best bet for most shoppers because it's the lowest trim available with several comfort, convenience, and active safety features. Just be aware that you'll need to shop for the specific features you want.

• Dodge Journey SE: The entry-level Journey SE has a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, a four-speed automatic transmission, the Uconnect infotainment system, a 4.3-inch touch screen, a USB port, a six-speaker stereo, proximity keyless entry, and push-button start. Available options include Bluetooth, satellite radio, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.
• Dodge Journey SXT: The Dodge Journey SXT adds no standard features to the SE’s equipment list, but you may find SXTs with features that weren't offered in the base trim, such as a power-adjustable driver’s seat and a fold-flat front passenger seat.
• Dodge Journey Crossroad: The Dodge Journey Crossroad has an 8.4-inch touch screen, dual-zone automatic climate control, and all the options listed above. You may also find Crossroad models equipped with tri-zone automatic climate control, remote start, heated front seats, leather seats, a heated steering wheel, a navigation system, a rear-seat entertainment system with a 9-inch screen, a sunroof, rear parking sensors, and a rearview camera. When new, the Crossroad was the lowest trim to offer these options.
• Dodge Journey GT: The Journey GT features a V6 engine, a six-speed automatic transmission, all-wheel drive, a high-performance suspension, remote start, leather upholstery, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and a six-speaker premium stereo. Many of the same options from the Crossroad are available in the GT.

What Does Dodge's Certified Pre-Owned Warranty Cover?

Dodge offers a certified pre-owned program for vehicles six years old or less and with fewer than 65,000 miles. Eligibility is determined by the vehicle’s initial sale date. For its certified pre-owned vehicles, Dodge offers a five-year/100,000-mile maximum care limited warranty. Additional benefits are available, including a 90-day satellite radio trial subscription, a Carfax vehicle history report, 24-hour towing and roadside assistance and a car rental allowance. Its available engine options are energetic, and it has a more composed ride. The Hyundai is the superior choice.

How does the 2018 journey drive.

The base engine struggles at highway speeds and when the Journey is loaded with passengers and cargo. It’s also noisy, and the four-speed automatic transmission makes poorly timed shifts. The V6 fares better, but not by much. Models equipped with the V6 engine still deliver sluggish acceleration.

This crossover SUV drives like a larger vehicle, with lots of body lean. It’s capable of handling winding roads, though, and its suspension does a good job smoothing over road flaws.

The Journey seats seven people in three rows. The front seats are supportive and comfortable, and the second-row seats have ample head- and legroom for most adults. How Many Child Car Seats Fit in the 2018 Journey?

For securing child car seats, this SUV has two complete sets of LATCH connectors on the outboard second-row seats. There’s also a third tether anchor and a single lower anchor for the second row's rear middle seat, and another lower anchor can be borrowed from the second-row passenger-side seat. The whole setup received a second-worst Marginal rating for ease of use from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety because the tether anchors are hard to find and can be easily confused for other hardware.

2018 Dodge Journey Features

Prominent in any Fiat, Chrysler, Jeep, or Dodge vehicle, the Uconnect infotainment system draws praise for being exceptionally easy to use. The larger touch screen has crisp graphics and responds quickly to inputs. However, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are unavailable.

The Journey has 10.7 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats, 37 cubic feet behind the second row, and 67.6 cubic feet behind the front row.

Most other midsize crossovers, such as the 2018 Dodge Durango , have more cargo room. Even some compact SUVs , like the 2018 Toyota RAV4 , have more room. Additionally, the high liftover height makes it difficult to load heavier items. On the plus side, the fold-flat front passenger seat makes it easier to store longer items.
