Best car show and event guide for 2022

From the Rolex 24 at Daytona to Overland Expo and the Indy 500, these are America's must-see automotive events this year.

car cruise guide events

Bring comfortable shoes to Overland Expo (maybe your pooch, too).

If you're like Roadshow's editorial team, you've got a bucket list of automotive experiences, car shows and races you're keen to check off. Unfortunately, for most of us, it's all but impossible to find the time and resources to tick more than one or two boxes off that checklist per year. But you've got to start somewhere, so why not start with us?

To help you plan, allow us to present Roadshow's list of must-see annual car events that take place right here in the US of A (sorry, no  Goodwood Festival of Speed or Revival  here). In other words, if one or more of your chosen events isn't doable for 2022, put the rough dates in your calendar for next year. Whether you're a motorsports diehard, a vintage car fanatic, a budding collector, an off-road maven or someone who just wants more cool car and motorcycle experiences in your life, our list has you covered, from name-brand icons to some events you probably haven't heard mentioned before. A number of these events are big-ticket, once-in-a-lifetime splurges, while others are totally free. Simply put, there's an event on Roadshow's ultimate gearhead event list for every person and every budget.

The Rolex 24 at Daytona - Ferris wheel.

Enjoying racing in the wee hours of the morning with hardcore fans isn't to be missed. That firework back there? It's actually a Ferris wheel.

Rolex 24 at Daytona: Jan. 29-30

We begin our wish-list year with the event that happens first on the calendar, the  Rolex 24 at Daytona , the granddaddy of American endurance races. This all-day, all-night spectacular began in 1962, and takes place at the Daytona International Speedway on the track's full road course.

With multiple classes of racing, from purpose-built Daytona Prototype International (DPi) race cars to production-based GT Daytona (GTD) cars, there's something at the Rolex 24 for everyone. Even if you're not a motorsports fan, there's plenty to do and see, including the crazy infield camping scene, which is not to be missed. Attend just once and you'll realize that Daytona isn't just a race, it's a cultural phenomenon.

Don't miss: Ride the Ferris wheel for a great view -- even at night.

King of the Hammers buggy climbing.

King of the Hammers includes technical sections like this one, but also flat-out, high-speed desert racing, too.

King of the Hammers: Feb. 5

Held in the remote reaches of Johnson Valley, California, King of the Hammers has long billed itself as the "toughest one-day off-road race in the world." In fact, KoH has grown to be a series of races that combines desert racing and rock crawling. This year's event is actually stretching to 10 days, packing in more entertainment and racing action than ever.

Now solidly in its teenage years, Ultra4's King of the Hammers draws tens of thousands of spectators to Hammertown, a pop-up city in the middle of a dry lake bed in California's High Desert. You'll see all kinds of off-road rigs, from tube-frame buggies to SUVs, desert racing trucks, UTVs (side-by-sides) and motorcycles.

Hundreds of racers are expected for the event. For 2022, Hammertown opens Jan. 27 and closes Feb. 5, with the namesake main King of the Hammers race covering hundreds of miles on Saturday, Feb. 5. The race course must be completed in under 14 hours, and there are no chase vehicles allowed. All vehicular repairs -- and in a race this brutal, those are common -- must be carried out on course by the racers themselves or in designated pit areas.

This race is tough, but even spectating takes genuine grit, too, as it involves camping in the desert in the middle of winter. You'll want an RV or camper stocked with plenty of supplies, and you'll also need to be OK with limited connectivity -- you can't join 35,000 fans to the middle of nowhere and expect to have unfettered service. In general, if your idea of roughing it is more along the lines of glamping, KoH probably isn't a good fit for you.

Don't miss: Make sure to check out Friday's 4WP Every Man Challenge. If you can't relate to the big-dollar rigs of the race on Saturday, the Every Man Challenge, with its focus on stock and lightly modified vehicles, might just be for you.

Radwood Porsche 944 with skateboarder.

Radwood in a nutshell. Don't forget your period Eighties clothing, dudes.

Radwood: Various dates

Radwood , the 1980s and '90s-themed car show, is still in its infancy. Founded in 2017, its popularity continues to mushroom, and it's easy to appreciate why. Focused on automobiles produced from 1980 to 1999, Radwood doesn't just celebrate those rare and expensive models that are starting to acquire classic status. No, this series of shows doesn't take itself seriously enough for that. Instead, Radwood wholeheartedly embraces time-warp examples of humble workaday iron, as well as period custom cars and individually imported "forbidden fruit" from Japan and Europe. Said another way, Radwood keeps it weird in the best way possible.

What started off as a one-off show in California's Bay Area has quickly snowballed into a national calendar of events, so chances are getting better that there's a Radwood show headed to a city near you in 2022. This year's calendar is still coalescing (likely due to evolving pandemic concerns), but the first event on the slate is going to be Feb. 26 in Austin, Texas, a rescheduling of an event originally scheduled for Oct. 9, 2021.

We at Roadshow have attended numerous Radwood events, including a particularly memorable  Radwood LA  in 2019, when we entered an ultra-low-mileage 1993 Prelude from Honda's personal collection and an ex-Jerry-Seinfeld 1993 Renntech E60 Mercedes-Benz. That said, the folks behind Radwood are open to all kinds of rides in all kinds of conditions and with all kinds of values. Displaying your 1980-1999 car or truck at the show is inexpensive and general admission is reasonable, too. Keep an eye on the traveling show's official website for future dates.

Don't miss:  Period-appropriate attire and car-display accessories is absolutely encouraged. Radwood is your best excuse to seek out a pair of vintage Zubaz, or maybe splurge on a Lasonic double-cassette boombox to display in the trunk of your Nissan Pulsar NX.

Overland Expo West 2021 descends upon Flagstaff

car cruise guide events

Overland Expo: Various dates

Overlanding was already growing by leaps and bounds prior to COVID, but if anything, this vehicle-based adventure travel pastime has been turbocharged by the pandemic. Perhaps that should come as no surprise, because with its inherent emphasis on off-the-beaten-path exploration, camping and self reliance, overlanding is all but tailor-made for these socially distanced times.

Whether you're just looking to dip your hiking boot into this activity for the first time or you're or a seasoned pro with a dedicated off-road rig or an RV with piles of gear, there are few better places to learn more about this outdoor hobby and buy gear to support it than Overland Expo . This series of family-friendly events travels across the country from Arizona to Virginia between May and October, and naturally, there's plenty of camping space for attendees.

  • Overland Expo West - May 20-22 - Flagstaff, Arizona
  • Overland Expo Mountain West - Aug. 26-28 - Loveland, Colorado
  • Overland Expo East - Oct 7-9 - Arrington, Virginia

Overland Expo isn't just rows of hundreds of vendors and off-road builds of every shape, description and value, although that's a big part of its attraction. (You could probably roll into an OE Expo on a Friday with a bone-stock SUV, van or camper and roll out with the gear, contacts and skill to build a fully accoutered rig by the end of the weekend.) The secret sauce that makes Overland Expo both useful and inspiring are the related activities, which includes hundreds of hours of instructional classes on everything from excursion planning to off-road driving and riding techniques to how to cook in the wilderness and first-aid. There's even live music and food and beer tents offering pretty decent grub, as well as a film festival.

I attended Overland Expo West in Flagstaff, Arizona in late September 2021, and it was an almost overwhelming indoctrination into the hobby. I've been enjoying off-roading for over 15 years, and after attending, it's clear I've just scratched the surface when it comes to overlanding. If anything, the sheer scope of one of these events can be a little daunting, so bring a friend -- maybe even a four-legged one. (I've never seen so many dogs at any car-related event.)

Don't miss:  Class time. Seriously, where else can you learn so much about wheeling, camping and self-sufficiency from experts in one place?

Indy 500

The 106th running of the Indianapolis 500 takes place Sunday, May 29.

Indianapolis 500: May 29

A global motorsports institution since 1911, the Indianapolis 500 pretty much speaks for itself. Held annually over Memorial Day weekend, this 500-mile race is the only leg of the Triple Crown of Motorsport held in the US. Hundreds of thousands flock to Indianapolis Motor Speedway (aka "The Brickyard") for this open-wheel, open-cockpit IndyCar Series spectacular. Names like Andretti, Mears, Sullivan and Unser became legends here, and today, the "Greatest Spectacle In Racing" still draws hundreds of thousands of spectators.

The 200-lap race is actually the capstone event of the weekend. There's a brace of don't-miss support races in the run-up that make this a weekend-long spectacular. Plus, qualifying for the Indy 500 is a very watchable phenomenon unto itself.

Don't miss:  Make sure to get to your seat early, so you can belt out "(Back Home Again in) Indiana" before the green flag drops. Actor/singer  Jim Nabors  traditionally performed the song ahead of the race for some five decades, but following his passing, the tradition continues with other notable singers.

Blink and you'll miss the record-breaking Volkswagen Bonneville Jetta

car cruise guide events

Bonneville Speed Week: Aug. 6-12

Stare at the salt, and you can't help but know you're in for an automotive experience unlike any other. Set on the vast salt flats of northwest Utah, Bonneville Speed Week has played host to Land Speed Record (LSR) attempts for over a century. As a 30,000-acre temple of speed, the Bonneville Salt Flats really picked up momentum in the 1930s. If you're a casual automotive fan and need things like adjacent rock concerts and midways and swag to have a good time, this might not be the event for you. That said, anyone who is obsessed with going fast and with automotive history knows that  Bonneville Speed Week  deserves a top spot on their bucket list.

This weeklong event is perhaps best known for playing host to vast, purpose-built, dartlike jet cars, or perhaps slipstream  belly-tank Lakesters  made from repurposed World War II airplane fuel cells. That said, there are record classes for just about every type of vehicle and method of power, from modern and vintage street cars to commercial semi trucks, motorcycles and even pedal-powered bikes. In fact, back in 2018. Roadshow's own  Emme Hall went 208 mph at Bonneville  in a modified 2019 Volkswagen Jetta. Because there are so many Land Speed Record classes, Bonneville is one of the few places where rank amateurs can show up and go home with a record of their very own.

Sadly, Bonneville Speed Week authorities are no strangers to cancellations, even before the pandemic. Despite extensive preservation efforts, deteriorating salt conditions have led to the nixing of their land-speed record attempts more than once in recent years. The 2022 proceedings have just been set for Aug. 6-12, so you might want to bump it to the top of your list because it's not clear how long this century-long tradition will be able to continue.

Don't miss:  Bonneville Speed Week is very much a family thing for spectators and participants. You won't find any velvet ropes here. Many multigenerational families form the cornerstone of this unusual form of racing, and most are excellent ambassadors for the sport, so make a point of chatting up a few.

Monterey Car Week: Aug. 12-21

Monterey Car Week is nothing less than the nexus of America's collector-car universe. This 10-day-long series of car shows, auctions, cruise-ins and vintage racing happenings is a spectacle where you'll see more blue-chip classics and exotics in the parking lots of many of these events than you'll see entered in other top-notch car shows.

This epic celebration of automotive beauty, speed and noise culminates in the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance , held on the posh greens of the Pebble Beach Golf Links. Having your car even invited to participate at Pebble is a sign that it's among the very finest automobiles in the world. Winning a prize -- let alone Best In Show -- is an obsession that well-heeled enthusiasts spend untold millions pursuing. Luxury automakers and lifestyle companies have glommed on to the event, as well, and Pebble has become a favorite spot for car companies to launch new concepts and luxury production models, since at the show they have a built-in audience of monied buyers.

Of course, Monterey Car Week is about far more than just Pebble, and indeed, far more than the big-dollar auctions from outfits like Bonham's, Gooding & Company, Russo and Steele, and RM Sotheby's.

Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion - Porsches and BMWs racing

The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion sees many of the world's greatest vintage race cars back in competition every year.

Even if you can't readily relate to the multimillion-dollar restorations lavished upon (already) multimillion-dollar cars, if you're a motorsports buff, you're bound to fall in love with the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion . Held at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca (one of the world's most entertaining racetracks), the Rolex Reunion is your chance to see, hear and smell the world's best sports, touring and racing cars from the 1900s right on up to the 1990s. Formula One, Can Am, Indy Car, Trans Am -- they're all here, and thanks to the track's hilly topography and layout, it's easy to see all the cars driven in anger on the track or study them at rest in the pits.

Monterey Car Week is chock-a-block with car-culture celebrities and motorsports luminaries, too. Three-time Formula One World Champion Jackie Stewart qualifies as both, and I had the rare honor of touring The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering , with the Flying Scot back in 2018. "While celebrating the rich history of the automobile, every year Monterey Car Week offers something new and exciting. Seeing these wonderful cars and hearing their unique stories always gives me a sense of nostalgia and allows me to reflect on my journey," Stewart said.

Sir Jackie Stewart at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering during Monterey Car Week

Racing legend Jackie Stewart has become a cornerstone presence at Monterey Car Week.

Unlike the Pebble Beach Concours, The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering , is an unjudged assembly of world-class vintage racing and street cars. Held in the garden-party-like setting of the Quail Lodge & Golf Club in Carmel, this is unabashed automotive high society. As a result, tickets for events like The Quail are among the most exclusive and costly in all of car culture, but you needn't be landed gentry to enjoy Monterey Car Week. You can take in the Pebble Beach Tour D'Elegance Presented by Rolex on Aug. 18. An annual driving event that traces sections of the original 17 Mile Drive, including a noontime display on Ocean Avenue. Still too high-end for you? How about  Concours d'Lemons Monterey at Seaside City Hall on Aug. 14, one in a series of madcap national concours car shows designed to celebrate "the oddball, mundane and truly awful of the automotive world."

Don't miss:  Touring the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion pit area. The sights, sounds and yes, even the smells are not to be missed. Plus, you never know who you might bump into.

Woodward Dream Cruise crowds and cars

Woodward Dream Cruise attracts some 1.5M gawkers and 50,000 participating vehicles annually.

Woodward Dream Cruise: Aug. 20

Held every year on the third Saturday of August, Motown's Woodward Dream Cruise isn't just the world's largest cruise-in, it lays claim to being the world's biggest single-day car event, period. Running up and down Woodward Avenue, America's first paved street, this metropolitan Detroit event has more classic muscle cars and trucks than you can possibly imagine. And this open-to-the-public event isn't just limited to vintage American iron. You'll see supercars, wild Japanese customs, lifted 4x4s and just about every type of car or motorcycle mixing it up in live traffic.

What started off as a fundraising cruise-in to help pay for a soccer field nearly a quarter-century ago quickly morphed into a mega event in the Motor City. These days, the Woodward Dream Cruise attracts somewhere around 40,000 to 50,000 classic and exotic cars. A big part of the allure is that there's no cost or barrier to admission, you just show up in your ride, cruise around and enjoy. It's estimated that 1.5 million Cruise-goers line the road for this massive sheet-metal parade. Automakers and car clubs often have their own stands set up along the road, too.

Don't miss:  Taking a break for the onion-heavy sliders at  Hunter House Hamburgers , a 1952 pillbox diner along Woodward in Birmingham.

The Race of Gentlemen: TBD

If there's an event on this list that you might not have heard of, The Race of Gentlemen  -- "TROG" for short -- is probably it. But if you're the type of person who thinks you were born in the wrong era, you're going to want to listen up. Dreamed up by a cadre of reformed motorcycle club members, this Wildwood, New Jersey, happening celebrates pre- and post-war car and motorcycle racing. Bracket-style drag racing takes place on a sandy beach from morning until sundown (provided the tide cooperates). Despite the event's title, both men and women participate in all manner of racing. This year is the event's 10th anniversary.

If you didn't notice the cell phones and modern cameras in spectators' hands when you happened upon TROG, you might think you'd stepped into a time warp. Cars racing on the beach are pre-1936 and motorcycles are pre-1947. Modifications are plentiful, but participating vehicles have to feature period-correct speed parts (including reproduction tires), and most participants rock era-appropriate hot-rodder clothing and helmets, too.

Even if racing isn't really your scene, you can stroll through the reserved parking for pre-1965 cars right on the beach, plus there are supporting events with food purveyors, tchotchke vendors, live music and other attractions. There's even a bonfire beach party.

Dates for TROG 2022 have not yet been announced, but in past years, the event has been in the fall, typically in the late September to early October timeframe. Keep an eye on the event's official website for details, as well as any of TROG's other offshoot events.

Don't miss: Customs by the Sea -- this hot rod and classic car show is open to pre-1952 automobiles modified in period fashion.

Hershey Fall Meet vintage flea market vintage neon signs

The Hershey Fall Meet features a legendary automotive flea market with truckloads of parts and petroliana.

Hershey National Fall Meet: Oct. 4-7

Known simply as "Hershey" to its legion of regulars, the Eastern Division Antique Automobile Club of America's National Fall Meet is held annually during the first full week of October in Hershey, Pennsylvania. What started in 1955 has grown into what is very likely the largest classic car show in the world.

Just as importantly, Hershey's legendary flea market has the most antique car parts for sale in one place anywhere, plus all the neat  petroliana and period-correct car gear to outfit your dream garage. There are nearly 10,000 vendors. Need a taillight for your 1949 Packard Super 8? How about a glass cylinder for your visible gas pump? If you can't find it here, you won't find it anywhere. If you need a new project or a turn-key cruiser, there's even a massive Car Corral with 25-years-or-older vehicles for sale.

Don't miss: Old-time movies shown gratis in the Music Box Theater.

24 Hours of Lemons racing - corner battle

A typical 24 Hours of Lemons corner battle is anything but normal.

24 Hours of Lemons: Various dates

If you have yet to get into auto racing because it's too costly or you think people just take motorsports too seriously, the 24 Hour of Lemons  is for you. This is low-dollar, crap-can racing with a heaping helping of theatrics, hilarity and good ol' Yankee ingenuity. The racing isn't bad, either.

This endurance-racing series features cars bought and track-prepped for under $500, and you don't even need a racing license to participate. Can that be safe? Yes -- safety-critical components like brakes, wheels and tires don't factor into that budget, nor do required features like a racing seat and belts, fire suppression, engine kill switch and so on.

Some participants build serious stripped-down race cars, while others go for novelties and curiosities. Some manage both at the same time. Ever seen a 1983 Porsche 944 fused with a '70s Chevy pickup? You can at Lemons . Heck, back in 2013, someone dropped an abandoned 1956 Cessna 310 airplane shell atop a Toyota minivan, dubbing it " Spirit of LeMons ."

Frankly, it doesn't get much weirder or more spectacular than a Lemons race . The community spirit and good humor are everywhere, and the racing isn't too bad, either. At the moment, there are no fewer than 24 races on the calendar for 2022, running from March to December, so there's probably one in your area.

Don't miss: If you can't get enough of 24 Hours of Lemons, you might also want to check out Concours d'Lemons , a series of car shows "celebrating the oddball, mundane and truly awful of the automotive world."

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Memorial Day, always held on the last Monday in May, will be observed on May 27 this year. The national holiday honors those who have died in service to their country.

To observe Memorial Day, West Michigan communities around the Grand Rapids area are holding parades, flag ceremonies and other events.

Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, was first observed nationally to honor Union soldiers who died in the Civil War. Now the holiday honors all American military members who died during active duty.

The holiday differs from Armed Forces Day and Veterans Day in that it focuses specifically on those soldiers who died for their country.

Below is a list of parades and other Memorial Day events in West Michigan.

Grand Rapids

The Grand Rapids Memorial Day parade is put on by the United Veterans Council of Kent County. The parade starts at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 25. The parade begins on Lyon Street between Monroe and Ottawa, then travels west on Lyon to Monroe, south on Monroe to Monroe Center, north on Monroe Center to Division, south on Division to Fulton and then east on Fulton to Veterans Memorial Park.

According to the Veterans Council, the best places to watch the parade are:

  • Monroe Center Street NW
  • Division Avenue N between Monroe Center Street and Fulton Street
  • Fulton Street E from Division Avenue to Veterans Memorial Park

The city of Walker Memorial Day parade starts at noon on Monday, May 27. The parade will “honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation,” according to the city’s website. The parade begins at Walker City Hall at 4243 Remembrance Road NW, and travels along Remembrance Road NW to the end point just past Debartolo Realty. Remembrance Road will close at 11:30 a.m. for the parade and will reopen when the parade is over.

The city of Wyoming’s annual Memorial Day ceremony is at 7 p.m. Monday, May 27 at the Veterans Memorial Garden, 2300 DeHoop Ave. SW.

Mayor Kent Vanderwood and the Wyoming Public Safety Honor Guard will lead the ceremony for the community to remember and recognize those in the Armed Forces who died. The Godfrey-Lee High School band will perform musical selections and Lt. Col. Denny Gillem will speak.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a blanket or folding chair and arrive early to secure a spot.

Cascade Township

The Cascade Township Memorial Day ceremony is set for 10 a.m. Monday, May 27 outside the library at 2870 Jacksmith Ave. SE.

Township Supervisor Grace Lesperance will officiate the ceremony. The ceremony will recognize the members of McDonald-Osmer American Legion Post #451. The 3rd Michigan Infantry Co. F Civil War reenactors color guard will appear and Boy Scout Troop 345 will raise the flag. The Forest Hills Central High School jazz band will perform.

This year’s guest speaker is retired U.S. Navy Capt. Thom W. Burke. Burke led teams of up to 5,000 in the Navy, retiring in 2016 as Chief of Naval Operations Director of the Fleet Readiness Division. Burke is currently serving as a Walker city commissioner.

The Rockford American Legion Post #102 is hosting a Memorial Day ceremony at 11 a.m. Monday, May 27 at the Rockford Cemetery, 240 S Lincoln St. The ceremony will take place rain or shine.

Hudsonville

The city of Hudsonville’s Memorial Day service will take place at 10 a.m. outside City Hall, 3275 Central Blvd., at Veterans Park. Seating will be provided.

Mayor Mark Northrup will give remarks, along with Ottawa County resident Chris Vander Sys, who served in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years. During his last year in the Air Force, Vander Sys served in Afghanistan training Afghans to operate their own air force and build a system of finding senior officers for the Afghan force.

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office will also post the colors and lay a wreath during the ceremony.

Georgetown Township

The Georgetown Township/Jenison Memorial Day parade will begin at 9 a.m. Monday, May 27. The parade travels along Baldwin Street from the corner of 20th Avenue to Cottonwood Drive.

The parade is put on with Kenowa AMBUCS, a charity known for providing adaptive tricycles to those with disabilities and other community service. The AMBUCS group is hosting a 5K at 8 a.m. on Memorial Day, beginning at Honor Credit Union, 1963 Baldwin St.

A memorial service will be held at the Georgetown Township cemetery following the parade. Seating will not be provided.

Coopersville

The Coopersville Memorial Day parade begins at 9:30 a.m. Monday, May 27. The parade begins on East Street and continues down Main Street to Eastmanville Street, then turns south on Eastmanville and east on West Randall Street to Veterans Park.

There will be no candy thrown during the parade, but flags will be handed out to onlookers. The parade is put on by the Coopersville VFW, Coopersville/Polkton Fire Rescue, Coopersville Rotary, Boy Scouts, AwardsPlus, Retirement Referral Management, Coopersville Farm Museum and others.

Children are encouraged to decorate their bicycles and ride them in the parade. There will be prizes for the best decorated bikes.

13 things you should do before every cruise

Gene Sloan

You've booked your cruise. You've booked your flights. You've booked your pre- and post-cruise hotels. Now, it's just a matter of counting the days until your on-the-water adventure begins, right?

Well, not quite.

There are many (mostly) little things you still need to do before you begin your journey to the pier to board your ship.

From downloading your cruise line's app and using it to check in for your trip to signing up for ship-based activities in advance, here's our handy checklist of 13 things everyone should do before leaving home for a cruise vacation.

For more cruise guides, news and reviews, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Check in online

Yeah, I know, you were going to do this anyway. But, just in case you weren't: Know that it pays off big time to check in online before your cruise.

There's a lot of paperwork required to check in for a cruise, including (at many cruise lines) filling out documents asking for personal information such as your name, address, gender, date of birth, nationality and even pregnancy status; emergency contacts; and your pre- and post-cruise travel plans. You'll also be asked to set up an onboard account and submit a photo of yourself.

If you do this all in advance online — and many lines now require that you do — you'll be able to board your ship quicker than if you wait to do it at the pier.

Note that in most cases, you can check in online for a cruise many weeks in advance. At Royal Caribbean , the check-in window opens a full 45 days in advance of a sailing. At Carnival Cruise Line , check-in opens 14 days before departure.

Check your identification documents

car cruise guide events

Long before you check in for your cruise, you should take a glance at whatever identification document you're going to use during the check-in process to make sure it hasn't expired — or is even close to expiring.

On many cruise itineraries, you will need a passport , and many countries that cruise lines visit require passports to be valid for at least six months beyond the date you plan to leave the country. Many countries also require at least two blank pages in your passport. If your passport is full of visa stamps, it's time to get a new one, even if it hasn't expired.

Download the cruise app

Many cruise lines now have apps you can download to your smartphone. The apps vary in capabilities, but many will show you a daily list of activities on your ship and everything you have reserved. Many also will let you make restaurant reservations and book shore excursions and other activities.

A few will let you order drinks and other items (think: pizza and beer) to be brought to wherever you happen to be standing. That's pretty cool, right? The best part: The apps will work on board even if you don't pay for a Wi-Fi package.

Some of the apps also will aid you with the check-in process. The Celebrity Cruises app, for instance, lets you check in for a cruise with relative ease. You'll even be able to submit the security photo the cruise line requires using the Celebrity app. The app also will show your Celebrity Xpress boarding pass, so there's no need to print one in advance of heading to the pier.

Print out your documents

In theory, you don't need to print your cruise boarding pass if you have it on your mobile device, but I still always do — and I recommend you do the same.

I always keep a hard copy of every travel document — including pages that show my itinerary and reservation numbers for related hotel stays and flights — in my carry-on bag.

There are several reasons to do this. One is that you never know when your mobile device will die or have a connectivity issue that results in the document you need not being available. But you might also encounter authorities — an immigration official at a border, for instance — who will want to see hard copies of your itinerary before allowing you to proceed.

Tell friends and family about your trip

It's always a good idea to let at least a few people close to you know you're leaving on a trip. Give them a rough outline of where you're going and tell them how to contact you in an emergency. This might seem like obvious advice, but a reminder never hurts.

I have forgotten to do this at times — and while it's never resulted in a crisis, it has gotten me in trouble with the family.

I found myself in the big-time doghouse in late 2020 with my 75-year-old, always-worries-when-I-travel mom after forgetting to tell her I was heading to Barbados at the last minute to report on the first Caribbean cruise after the COVID-19 crisis began. She only found out I was out of the country when one of her friends saw me on TV talking about how I was quarantined in my cabin on the ship due to an outbreak of the illness. You can imagine her reaction. Lesson learned.

Also: Call your mom.

Research ports in advance

car cruise guide events

On some vacations — a beach trip, for instance — you don't have to do much research in advance. You just show up and figure out your days on the fly.

Most cruises aren't that way — at least if you want to get the most out of them. At the heart of most cruises are port calls that, in many cases, are short, often just a few hours. You want to have a plan for what to do in these ports, or you'll miss out on a big part of the cruising experience.

Once you know which ports you'll be visiting, do as much research as you can. You can read TPG's guides to the best excursions and activities in destinations like Alaska , the Caribbean and the Mediterranean .

Join a Facebook group for your cruise line

Another great place to get ideas for what to do in ports and on ships — and what to bring on a cruise, for that matter — are the many private Facebook groups dedicated to particular lines.

I belong to a number of them, including the Royal Caribbean Cruises group, the COPs (Cruisers Opinion Page) group and the Holland America Line Fans group. On these pages, you'll find thousands of cruise fans who often are only too willing to answer questions you might have about your upcoming trip. I've met some wonderful people in these groups, some of whom have become my longtime friends on Facebook.

Sign up for private tours in advance

Booking a shore excursion directly through your cruise line is easy. You check a box on an online form before sailing or while on board, and — poof — it's all arranged. But booking tours through your line isn't the only option, and it's not always the best choice.

In many cases, you can save a lot of money — and get a better touring experience — by booking shore excursions in advance through independent tour operators in ports or a tour booking service such as Viator or ToursByLocals .

Often, independent tours will be more intimate than the tours offered directly through cruise lines. They might go to the same sites but in a small van instead of a big motorcoach. You might have six or eight other people on a tour with you instead of nearly 40. If your traveling group is big enough, you might even book a private tour just for your friends and family with an independent tour operator.

Sign up for activities in advance

Some lines will let you sign up for shows, tours and other activities (including meals at specialty restaurants) before sailing using online portals. If you want to be sure you get a seat for a specific show on a specific night, or a specific tour or restaurant reservation time, it's a good idea to do this. It's common for popular shows, tours and restaurant reservation times to book up in advance.

If you don't sign up for activities in advance, a backup strategy is to do so just after you board a vessel — but I'm a big advocate of advance planning. You'll find it particularly pays off when sailing on a giant ship, such as Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas , where there are thousands of other passengers competing for restaurant reservations and show tickets.

Consider travel insurance

It's not always smooth seas when it comes to cruising or any other sort of travel. We hate to bring it up, but you might need to cancel your cruise in advance due to the sudden onset of an illness. Or, perhaps, you need emergency medical attention during your sailing. Maybe the flight to your ship gets canceled, and you miss the vessel's departure.

These sorts of things can happen to cruisers, and they're all situations where you might benefit from having travel insurance. Here's a comparison of the top travel insurance providers and information about cancel for any reason add-ons .

Pack wisely

car cruise guide events

For starters, pack early ... and be strategic. Throw all the clothes you think you'll need on the cruise in a pile, then take away half of them. We promise you won't need them.

Most cruising these days is casual, and you only need a few outfits to rotate through a voyage. If things get dirty, no problem. Some ships have launderettes on cabin decks where you can run a load or two of laundry every few days. If not, you can send laundry out to be cleaned on board for a fee in most cases (you might even get this for free if you have status with a cruise line ).

The extra cost of doing a few loads of laundry on a ship is a small price to pay for the freedom of not having to lug a giant suitcase around as you travel to and from your ship. Plus, you'll want to save room in your suitcase for all the little treasures you'll find along the way.

Related: Everything you need to know about cruise ship laundry service

In addition to packing light, pack anything you think you might need for the first few hours of your cruise in your carry-on bag . This means things like medication and a phone charger, but also a bathing suit, a hat, sunscreen and other items that'll let you head straight to the pool deck to start the fun. A porter will likely take away your main bag as you arrive at the port, and you might not see it delivered to your cabin for several hours.

Put your phone in airplane mode

Some of the biggest cruise ship horror stories online are tales of cruising newbies who racked up thousands of dollars in cellphone charges while on ships.

This can happen when you leave your phone turned on and, say, watch videos on the internet. Many phone plans — even international plans — do not include talking, texting and data on cruise ships, and you'll pay exorbitant roaming rates for such services that'll show up weeks later on your phone bill.

You can find ways to make calls and access the internet from ships without spending a boatload of money. You can buy a Wi-Fi package, for instance, that'll let you make FaceTime calls and stream videos (on some ships) by Wi-Fi without using phone data. Some phone companies also have cruise-specific plans you can buy in advance of a voyage.

Personally, I never go that route. I keep it simple. I just put my phone in airplane mode the moment I step on board a ship and never switch it back on. I then turn on the phone's Wi-Fi, buy a Wi-Fi package and do all my calling, texting and web surfing over the internet. That way, there's no chance I'll be surprised by an unexpected phone charge.

Get ready to unplug from work

Really, this should go without saying, but you are heading on vacation . Google that word (and scroll down past the entries for the Ed Helms and Chevy Chase movies to the Wikipedia entry).

This trip is going to be all about taking a break from work , not spending hours every day dealing with the latest crisis back at the office — or, at least, it should be.

In the days leading up to your trip, make sure you wrap up any pressing work projects, let your co-workers know you'll be offline, reply to any outstanding emails and — most importantly — turn on your out-of-office message.

Trust us: You'll be so much happier.

Spotify is going to break every Car Thing gadget it ever sold

The dashboard accessory, which went out of production in 2022, will become e-waste at the end of this year. spotify isn’t crediting or refunding customers..

A marketing image of Spotify’s Car Thing device.

Spotify’s brief attempt at being a hardware company wasn’t all that successful: the company stopped producing its Car Thing dashboard accessory less than a year after it went on sale to the public. And now, two years later, the device is about to be rendered completely inoperable. Customers who bought the Car Thing are receiving emails warning that it will stop working altogether as of December 9th.

Unfortunately for those owners, Spotify isn’t offering any kind of subscription credit or automatic refund for the device — nor is the company open-sourcing it. Rather, it’s just canning the project and telling people to (responsibly) dispose of Car Thing.

“We’re discontinuing Car Thing as part of our ongoing efforts to streamline our product offerings,” Spotify wrote in an FAQ on its website . “We understand it may be disappointing, but this decision allows us to focus on developing new features and enhancements that will ultimately provide a better experience to all Spotify users.”

The company is recommending that customers do a factory reset on the product and find some way of responsibly recycling the hardware. Spotify is also being direct and confirming that there’s little reason to ever expect a sequel. “As of now, there are no plans to release a replacement or new version of Car Thing,” the FAQ reads.

Car Thing was initially made available on an  invite-only basis in April 2021 , with Spotify later opening a public waitlist to buy the accessory  later that year . The $90 device went on  general sale in February 2022 — and production was halted five months later.

The Car Thing hardware was quite nice considering it was Spotify’s first go, but the product was more of a remote control for Spotify on your mobile phone than any kind of standalone player. That limited its appeal, though the device still found a niche community .

Other works are displayed, such as Chess (2012), a seminal installation by American artist Lutz Bacher , presented by Galerie Buchholz; ARCHITEKTURTRAUM (2001) by Swiss artist Miriam Cahn, presented by Meyer Riegger and Galerie Jocelyn Wolff; and a complete set of Robert Frank’s The Americans (1954-1957) presented by Pace Gallery and Thomas Zander, to name a few. Art Basel’s Unlimited Night returns on June 13th too, and for the first time, visitors to Unlimited can vote for their favorite artwork for the whole duration of Art Basel. The Unlimited People’s Pick will then be announced towards the end of the show week.

Stefanie Hessler , Director of Swiss Institute (SI) in New York, is curating Parcours for the first time, the Art Basel’s public art sector, which will unfold along Clarastrasse up to the Middle Bridge, connecting the fairgrounds with the Rhine. Parcours is expected to guide the visitors around empty stores and operational shops, a hotel, a restaurant, a brewery, and other everyday spaces on Basel’s Clarastrasse. The projects showcased, many of them site-specific and newly produced, aim to explore the transformation and circulation in trade, globalization, and ecology. Stefanie Hessler succeeds Samuel Leuenberger in curating Parcours, who expanded the sector over the past eight years.

In Parcours, London-based artist Alvaro Barrington builds the Tropical Zone store, an architectural structure lined with paintings that houses produce on sale, presented by Sadie Coles HQ, Thaddaeus Ropac, and Massimodecarlo. Swedish artist Lap-See Lam introduces her installation of traditional Chinese shadow play and digital animation, presented by Galerie Nordenhake. A portable garden is what Austrian artist Lois Weinberger is exhibiting, presented by Galerie Krinzinger, with the hopes of transposing nature into an urban context to attract insects and birds.

London-based artist Mandy El-Sayegh is holding a performance that questions the spread of information and goods within a partially vacant shopping mall, presented by Thaddaeus Ropac and Lehmann Maupin, while a series of pirate flags by Rirkrit Tiravanija lines the Middle Bridge crossing the Rhine, presented by neugerriemschneider. Peruvian artist Ximena Garrido-Lecca , presented by Galerie Gisela Capitain, installs her ‘Conversion systems’ inside a brewery, a juxtaposition of ancestral techniques and artisanal materials with industrial applications in petrol extraction. The Parcours Night will be hosted on June 12th, from 8 to 11pm, for a night of live performances and other acts along Clarastrasse and at the Merian, situated right at the Middle Bridge along the Rhine in Kleinbasel.

THE MESSEPLATZ

In the city’s Messeplatz, conceptual artist Agnes Denes guides the viewers into her site-specific presentation under the curation of Samuel Leuenberger, founder of the non-profit exhibition spaces SALTS in Birsfelden and Bennwil. It is Samuel Leuenberger’s third time curating the Messeplatz, and Agnes Denes’ presence ushers in the piece Honouring Wheatfield – A Confrontation (2024), referring to her land artwork from the 1980s, which will remain on the Messeplatz throughout the summer until its harvest. Agnes Denes is considered a pioneer of environmental, ecological, and land art whose artistic practice harks to the engagement with socio-political ideas.

CONVERSATIONS

Celebrating its 20th anniversary edition, Art Basel’s flagship talks program, Conversations , returns, curated for the first time by Berlin-based art critic Kimberly Bradley. More than 25 thought leaders are expected to join Conversations, with 11 focused panels related to the issue of building and shaping contemporary culture’s future. The discussions will touch on the art trade’s challenges and opportunities in a super election year, the potentials of increased interdisciplinarity in museums, how artists relate to politics in a time of global crisis, and the ways digital technologies are recasting art’s social and economic ecosystems.

Hans Ulrich Obrist will guide viewers into worldbuilding and the idea of utopia with digital artists Rebecca Allen and Danielle Braithwaite Shirley , and architect Carlo Ratti , who is curating the 2025 Venice Architecture Biennale (read more about it here ). Before her Hyundai Commission at Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall, artist Mire Lee will dive into her art practice, which connects to the art and history of moving sculptures. Then, Ben Davis from Artnet News will sit down with artist Cecile B. Evans to converse about how technology is changing art communities and its value.

Legal experts Katalin Andreides and Till Vere-Hodge, along with UBS’s Paul Donovan , will discuss how political and legal changes in an election year could affect the art market in a session led by Georgina Adam. The talks will wrap up with a discussion between Basel-based artist Sophie Jung and curator/critic Francesco Bonami about the role of humor and satire in modern art. During the final weekend, a selection of videos from the most notable discussions over the past two decades will be shown in the Conversations auditorium, and visitors are invited to attend.

Pop-up dining and show car at Art Basel 2024

Creative culinary studio WE ARE ONA and Art Basel 2024 have also joined forces for a series of culinary pop-up pairing fine dining, art and design. The first chapter begins with designer Pierre Marie and chef Sayaka Sawaguchi from June 9th to 16th in Filter4, a former municipal water tank in Basel. Their collaboration will also be presented during Art Basel’s global shows in Basel, Paris, Miami Beach and Hong Kong.

During Art Basel 2024, BMW will bring over its iX5 Hydrogen car, launched in February 2023, all dressed up in a new skin through its collaboration with British artist and set designer Es Devlin . The show and installation car is presented alongside a dance-theater piece born from a creative union with the renowned dancer, Sharon Eyal . More information about the project is coming soon.

LISTE ART FAIR BASEL 2024

Liste Art Fair Basel , which runs from June 10th to 26th, is returning too with all of its guides and formats: Liste Art Fair Basel, Liste Showtime Online and Liste Expedition Online. This year, 91 galleries from 35 countries will welcome visitors in Hall 1.1 at Messe Basel alongside 65 solo, 16 group presentations, and five joint booths. Elise Lammer is curating an extensive performance programme titled Mythic Beings, in homage to Adrian Piper’s 1973 work. A series of performances is expected to take place from Wren Cellier , Astrit Ismaili , Florence Peake , and Luana Vitra , from soundscapes and seminars to drawings and paintings.

Liste Showtime Online , which runs from June 10th to 23rd, is the digital edition of the physical Liste Art Fair Basel, tailored to the emerging contemporary artists presented by international galleries. In this space, visitors can go through over 80 new and upcoming artists represented by participating galleries from more than 35 countries. Along with this is the Liste Expedition Online , a research forum with a growing index of artists who represent new positions in contemporary art. The artists are selected by galleries and project spaces participating in Liste Art Fair Basel and Liste Showtime Online.

In a statement, the Liste Art Fair Basel’s team says that it underwent structural and personnel changes in the management following the news of its co-directorship. In October 2023, Reto Nussbaum took over as the commercial director, and the artistic direction for the 2024 fair is set to be overseen on an interim basis by Peter Bläuer, the co-founder and former long-time director of Liste.
