In our opinion,  you should always book a Disney cruise with a third-party travel agency or site that provides a bonus or discount . The extra onboard credit or discount is effectively FREE money. The primary question is whether you prefer to handle your bookings directly ( self-service ), or work with a personal agent ( full-service ). They’re both good options and they both offer essentially similar savings: one via their own extra-discounted fares and the other via FREE onboard credit.

Booking a Disney Cruise With a Self-Service Site

Our pick for self-service booking is Undercover Tourist . We’ve recommended them for more than a decade as a fantastic source for tickets, but they also have impressive deals on Disney cruises. Unlike other self-booking options like Expedia or Priceline, Undercover Tourist adds an additional discount over and above any special pricing Disney offers (like restricted guarantee , Military , or Florida resident rates)! We know of no other site that adds their own discounts to the baseline fare for Disney cruises. Occasionally one of the big online travel sites will do a limited-time small onboard credit or in-room gift, but Undercover Tourist offers extra discounts , on every Disney cruise, every day. Undercover Tourist further guarantees to MouseSavers readers that you will always get their lowest possible prices when booking through our links here and through our monthly newsletter and Hot Deals emails.

Keep in mind that this is a self-service option , for people who know exactly what cruise they want to take, what stateroom, how dining works, etc. If you like to handle your own bookings directly, Undercover Tourist is a great choice. If you would like to have a personal agent who can help guide you through the decision process and be available to answer questions, then the full-service approach will be a better fit.

Booking a Disney Cruise With a Full-Service Agent

The benefits of using a top travel agent are significant, both in convenience and price. First off, the best travel agents give you onboard credit, which is effectively FREE money, since the cruise fare isn’t any higher than if you booked through Disney. Furthermore, Disney Cruise Line has lots of confusing options involving tradeoffs that aren’t always clear. Using an experienced travel agent is like getting a FREE expert who knows everything about the Disney Cruise Line and is happy to walk you through the process and offer advice.

The travel agency we personally recommend here on MouseSavers.com, Small World Vacations , has some of the most experienced agents in the industry . The agents who handle cruise bookings for Small World have been on multiple Disney cruises, and know a truly astonishing amount about all four ships, the various Disney ports of call and all the common itineraries (and many uncommon ones). Many of them are Platinum members of Disney’s Castaway Club, meaning that they have personally been on 10 or more Disney cruises! They each have a direct phone number and email address they give out to their clients, so you can email them questions or requests any time.

Small World Vacations offers an onboard credit of up to $1,000 when you book a Disney Cruise with them. (Credit depends on your total cruise fare; the minimum fare to get credit is $1000.) Your onboard credit is good toward anything you can charge to your room, such as spa treatments, special dining, shore excursions or even your bar tab! Plus, this onboard credit offer is on top of any other discounts for which you may qualify (like restricted guarantee , Military , or Florida resident rates). And perhaps most importantly, the Small World Vacations agents know how to maximize value by making use of tricks like secret porthole rooms , secret verandah rooms , secret connecting rooms , and other clever strategies.

We pretty rarely encounter a deal that qualifies as a “no brainer,” but this is absolutely one, because it’s effectively FREE money . Small World Vacations’ fares are exactly the same as Disney’s; there are no other hidden markups or extra fees. The onboard credit is a bonus you won’t get booking with Disney.

Finally, if you’re going on a Disney cruise, be sure you take advantage of the onboard booking discount and list Small World Vacations as your preferred travel agent (or transfer the booking to Small World Vacations after your cruise is over), because it’s an essentially risk-free way to get significant discounts from Disney plus onboard credit from Small World Vacations in one fell swoop on a future cruise.

If you have any questions about onboard booking, email your questions directly to Small World Vacations at [email protected] before you leave on your cruise, and mention that you heard about onboard booking on MouseSavers.com. In our experience, the travel agents at Small World Vacations are great at finding the best fares. They know all the tricks that will save you money, and they know the Disney Cruise Line inside and out. We’re confident that once you work with a really great travel agent, you’ll never want to book a cruise any other way.

  • Learn more about the Small World Vacations onboard credit offer and request a price quote for your Disney cruise .
  • Small World Vacations gives you full service , including a personal travel agent you can contact by email or direct phone number, and we recommend them wholeheartedly ! Best of all, it costs you nothing to use them, PLUS they give you FREE onboard credit for any Disney Cruise Line booking of over $1000 total fare!

Onboard credit is cash value linked to your stateroom account on the ship, which you can spend by using your room key to pay for pretty much anything on the ship or on Castaway Cay. Onboard credit can be used for merchandise, adult beverages, bottled water, spa treatments, shore excursions, Palo, Remy, Palo Steakhouse or Enchanté meals, and other onboard activities, or even applied to gratuities for your servers and stateroom attendant.

Small World Vacations Onboard Credit

The travel agency we personally recommend here on MouseSavers.com, Small World Vacations , offers an onboard credit of $50 – $1000 when you book through them. (Credit depends on your total cruise fare; the minimum fare to get credit is $1000.) To learn more, visit the Small World Vacations website , where you can see full details about the onboard credit offer and request a quote on your cruise vacation .

Last-Minute Restricted Stateroom Discounts

Restricted Guarantee fares, when offered, are a great way to save if you are flexible about your stateroom location and willing to book “last minute,” usually meaning 21-75 days prior to departure. The savings can be very large, but you won’t know your exact stateroom at booking time. Disney guarantees you will get at least the stateroom type specified, and you could get assigned a higher level. You usually will get an actual stateroom assignment about 14 days before embarkation, but it could be assigned as late as the embarkation day.

There are complicated rules for Restricted Guarantee bookings ; be sure to read them if you’re not already familiar with them. The “Restricted Guarantee” room categories are offered on select sailings. The categories are:

  • Guaranteed Inside Stateroom with Restrictions (category IGT) – Guarantees an inside or better stateroom (minimum category 11C)
  • Guaranteed Oceanview Stateroom with Restrictions (category OGT) – Guarantees an oceanview or better stateroom (minimum category 9D)
  • Guaranteed Verandah Stateroom with Restrictions (category VGT) – Guarantees a verandah or better stateroom (minimum category 7A)

New! As of June 1, 2024, the following cruises had availability in the Restricted Guarantee categories . Prices given are lowest available fares for a single stateroom, in US dollars, including taxes, fees and port expenses, rounded to the nearest dollar. All sailings are from Port Canaveral unless noted otherwise.

General Notes:

  • A single guest gets charged essentially the same price as two guests. (Cruises are generally priced for a minimum of two guests per cabin.)
  • 5-passenger rooms are not available with this discount .
  • These discounts come and go as room inventory for a cruise changes. If you check for one and it doesn’t come up, it may come back. It’s worth checking back a few times over the next day or two to see if the discount becomes available again.
  • If a price isn’t listed, that doesn’t mean the category is completely sold out , just that it isn’t available with this discount.

Select number of guests to see total sailing price (for one stateroom):

  • If you are interested in booking one of these special restricted last-minute rates , we recommend either Small World Vacations or Undercover Tourist . We have worked with both companies for over 15 years and can recommend them wholeheartedly. It’s really a question of whether you prefer full-service booking or self booking. These staterooms often sell out fast, so if you see one you like, snag it quickly.
  • Small World Vacations is a full service agency, offering a personal travel agent you can contact by email or direct phone number. It costs you nothing to use them, PLUS their FREE onboard credit offer applies to these special fares (the total cruise fare for the stateroom must be at least $1000 to get their onboard credit).
  • Undercover Tourist is a self-service booking site similar to Expedia or Priceline, but with years of focus on the Disney travel market. They offer the special rates mentioned above PLUS they add their own discounts.

Important details you need to know about Restricted Guarantee fares:

  • Can be combined with the Small World Vacations onboard credit offer as well as Undercover Tourist’s own bonus discounts.
  • Cannot be combined with any other Disney discount or promotional offers.
  • The specific stateroom is assigned by Disney, generally within a week of cruise departure. You cannot select a stateroom number or make special requests as to stateroom location.
  • If you book two or more Restricted Guarantee staterooms, there is no way to ensure that they are near each other, or even on the same deck. Disney will put the rooms as close together as they can, but sometimes they just don’t have any rooms left that are near each other.
  • Applies to new bookings only. Existing reservations cannot be modified to these new categories.
  • Full payment is due at time of booking. Booking holds are not permitted.
  • Reservation is non-refundable . (This only applies to situations where you cancel the cruise. If Disney cancels the cruise, for example because of pandemic restrictions, you will get a refund.)
  • Reservation and applied payment are non-transferable .
  • Full legal names and birthdates for all stateroom occupants are required at time of booking.
  • Name changes after booking are not allowed .
  • Sail date, stateroom category and cruise itinerary changes are not allowed .
  • You can book a maximum of four people per stateroom on a Restricted Guarantee booking.
  • There is typically more availability for three or fewer guests per room. All Disney Cruise staterooms can hold three guests, but only some can hold four.
  • If you’re looking for these cruise fares on Disney’s web site, look for fares labeled “Guaranteed Inside Stateroom with Restrictions” or similar for Oceanview or Verandah. The key words are “…with restrictions.”

The one major change that you can make after booking: additional guests can be added to a stateroom, subject to space restrictions. Restrictions and booking rules are subject to change.

If you are going on a Disney cruise and think there is any chance you or a friend or relative may want to go on another Disney cruise in the next 24 months, be sure to book a future cruise while you are still onboard the ship . Disney has one of the most generous onboard booking programs in the cruise industry, and it’s a great way to get a discount and lower deposit on a future Disney cruise. When you book a future cruise while still onboard the ship you get all of the following benefits:

  • A 10% discount on the final cruise fare (with some blackout dates ; see below). Does not apply to Concierge bookings.
  • A lower deposit requirement of only 10% on 7+ night cruises (regular deposit requirement is 20%). Does not apply to Concierge bookings.
  • If you booked your current cruise with Small World Vacations and also use them as your agent for the future cruise , you’ll also get half their normal onboard credit . (Note that if you didn’t book your current cruise with Small World Vacations, the onboard booking agents may not let you add Small World as your agent while onboard. In that case, you would have to transfer your booking to Small World after you get home, but you would still be eligible for half their normal credit.)

You can book either a specific cruise or a “placeholder” cruise. A placeholder lets you make a booking without picking a specific cruise. It can be associated with a specific cruise later, after you get home and decide. To book a specific cruise onboard, you put down a deposit of 10% or 20% of the whole fare, depending on the length of the cruise. To book a placeholder, you put down a flat $250 deposit per future stateroom. When you change a placeholder to a specific cruise booking you’ll have to pay any increase in deposit. Keep in mind, there is an advantage to booking a specific cruise as early as possible: you lock in the rate. So, if there is a cruise you might want to take, it’s a good idea to book that specific cruise rather than a placeholder. Even if you’re not 100% sure that’s your perfect cruise, remember you can change it later with no penalty.

If you ultimately decide not to take a cruise, Disney will refund 100% of your deposit or placeholder payment . You always get a 100% refund as long as you haven’t passed the penalty date (120-75 days from sailing, depending on the cruise), and you didn’t book a concierge room or suite. There’s basically no risk, though it does tie up some deposit money while you think about your options.

You can change almost every aspect of your booking as many times as you need to and still keep the benefits . The name of one adult in each stateroom must stay the same, but you can change the names of any of the other guests, or increase or reduce the number of guests. You can change the stateroom category. You can change the ship or the sailing as long as the sail date is within 24 months of the initial booking date. If you end up changing to a more expensive booking, you’ll need to make up the difference between your original deposit and the new deposit. Keep in mind that if you later add a guest to a stateroom, they will get added at current rates, not at your initial booking rates. For the lowest final price and most flexibility, it’s a good idea to make the initial booking with everyone who might go, rather than only the people you know are going to go.

You get the full discount for up to two future staterooms or placeholders per household (i.e. per mailing address). Once you leave the ship, you can’t book more , so we recommend booking two (or more) every time, if you can afford to tie up the deposit money. If you later decide that you want to bring another family along, or put the kids in their own stateroom, you’ll be glad to have two rooms booked with the discount.

You can get the full discount for friends or relatives who are not sailing on your cruise. You’ll need your friends’ full legal names (as written on their passport) and their birth dates. Under the current rules, the first stateroom or placeholder you book with this discount on the future cruise needs to include at least one adult who is on the current cruise, in addition to anyone else you want to add, and then the second stateroom can have anyone in it. For example, say you wanted to book a cruise for your friends, the Smith family. You could book one room for your own family, then book the second room (on the same cruise) for the Smith family.

If you already have a future cruise booked, you can usually “re-shop” your existing booking and get the discount. However, you basically have to make a new booking and cancel the old one, and the price might have gone up since you booked originally, potentially wiping out your discount. Be sure to compare the bottom-line price for both bookings.

A few other terms & conditions:

  • There is no discount or lower deposit for 1- or 2-night sailings, IGT, OGT and VGT Restricted Guarantee bookings, or concierge staterooms and suites.
  • You can get the 10% discount and reduced deposit on a maximum of two staterooms per household.
  • Onboard booking incentives CANNOT be combined with any group discounts organized by a travel agency.
  • Disney could change these rules and benefits at any time. Check onboard for the latest terms.

Onboard Discount Blackout Dates:

Please note: there is no 10% discount when you book the following holiday and peak dates onboard (but you do get the smaller deposit):

  • Disney Dream : 3/31, 11/23, 11/27, 12/21, 12/26, 12/30
  • Disney Fantasy : 3/23, 3/30, 6/8, 11/23, 12/22, 12/26, 12/29
  • Disney Magic : 6/6, 11/25, 12/29
  • Disney Treasure : 12/21, 12/28
  • Disney Wish : 3/25, 3/29, 4/1, 11/25, 12/23, 12/27, 12/30
  • Disney Wonder : ( none announced yet )
  • Disney Dream : ( none announced yet )
  • Disney Fantasy : ( none announced yet )
  • Disney Magic : ( none announced yet )
  • Disney Treasure:  ( none announced yet )
  • Disney Wish : 4/14, 4/18, 4/21
  • The full legal names of everyone who is going to go on the future cruise, as listed on their passport or birth certificate
  • The number of rooms you want to book and what type ( inside, outside, verandah or placeholder )
  • Who’s in each room ( keeping in mind the maximum passengers for each room type )
  • Specific cruises you’re interested in, if you plan to book a cruise and not a placeholder ( or just rough notes with your needs/restrictions like dates or region )
  • Birth dates for everyone ( optional, but makes everything go smoother )
  • Bring the info with you on the cruise. If you just want to book a basic placeholder, you can do that while on the cruise with the Disney Navigator App on your phone (if you don’t already have it, just search for “Disney Navigator” in the Apple or Google app stores; you can download it before the cruise leaves to save time). If you want to do anything more complicated you’ll need to talk to a consultant at the future cruise desk.
  • If you can’t or don’t want to use the the Navigator app, at some point early in the cruise, go to the Future Bookings Desk on deck 4 and either fill out a form, or just put your room number and name on the sheet you brought (if it has all the details on it they’ll need) and drop it in the box. You can also wait for a consultant if they’re there, or check the schedule and come back when they’re scheduled to be there. If you drop off a form, they’ll secure a hold on a reservation and leave a printout by your stateroom door. If the reservation looks good, either go back to the desk to finish the booking or call 7-2848 from your stateroom phone. Either way, when the booking is done ask for a printed confirmation of your final reservation.
  • Before you leave the ship, confirm that everything is correct . You should have a printed confirmation or an emailed confirmation. The confirmation should show that your deposit is paid (if not, the booking will be canceled). If this isn’t on your confirmation, go to the Future Bookings Desk or Guest Services and make sure everything is correct. If you are working with a travel agent, verbally confirm that they are listed on the reservation before you leave the ship.
  • That’s it! If you booked a “placeholder” cruise, you can start the process of finding your actual cruise. If you are using a travel agent , email them to let them know you booked onboard. Once you’ve settled on the cruise you really want to take, change the booking as soon as you can to the actual sailing date to lock in the lowest possible fares and get the best choice of staterooms.

Disney Cruise Discounts for Florida Residents

Military personnel may book one stateroom under the military rates program. A second stateroom may be confirmed, if needed, to accommodate immediate family members only. For example, a family of two adults and four children may confirm two staterooms, based on availability, with the offer. Extended family (grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc.) do not qualify as immediate family members for the second stateroom. Active duty or retired military personnel and 100% permanently disabled veterans do not have to travel as long as their spouse has a valid military ID to show at the port. Reservists must be part of the travel party and must show ID at the port.

  • If you are interested in booking one of these special Military rates , we recommend either Small World Vacations or Undercover Tourist . Disney Cruise Discounts for Disney Visa Cardholders

Disney Visa cardholders who use their card as their payment method onboard automatically get several discounts on purchases on the ship and on Castaway Cay. In order for this to happen, you have to register your Disney Visa card when you check in at the port. You do not need to charge the cruise fare on your Disney Visa to get the discounts.

You should not need to ask at purchase time to get the discounts; if you have the card registered any discounts should automatically be applied when you make an eligible purchase.

These discounts cannot be combined with any other discounts you might qualify for, such as Disney Vacation Club discounts.

Discounts include:

  • 10% off selected merchandise purchases of $50 or more. Excludes sale merchandise, gift cards, Castaway Cay merchandise, DVDs, CDs, big-ticket items like art, jewelry, fragrances, cosmetics and watches, plus several vague catch-all categories like “selected special items.” Basically, ask first if you’ll get the 10% off, if it’s important to your purchase decision.
  • 10% off 10-photo, 15-photo, 20-photo or unlimited photo packages.
  • 10% off the Castaway Cay Getaway package (combination of snorkeling, bicycle and float or inner-tube rental).

Organizing your own group? Disney Specialist travel agents are adept at handling large groups and offer on-board credit and sometimes other incentives. Contact a Disney Specialist travel agency such as Small World Vacations for details. Remember, it costs you nothing to use them!

Costco members can get rebates on Disney cruises, which come in the form of a Costco gift card. However, Costco Travel is not a full-service travel agency: don’t expect much service or information.

In our experience, Costco reps are very nice, but don’t know much about Disney Cruise Line. They almost certainly have never been on a Disney cruise, and may have never been on a cruise of any kind. If you choose to go this route, be prepared to spend time and energy doing your own research about what your package includes and how everything works. Heaven help you if you need to book something complicated like connecting rooms or want to know the pros and cons of different stateroom options. Costco Travel most definitely won’t be able to offer any insider tips on what to expect or help you take advantage of special booking tricks or “secret” room upgrades. Effectively you’re just booking the cruise yourself, but through Costco instead of Disney.

In addition, we find the Costco reps are clueless about Disney’s promotional offers — they really only know about the Costco rebate. You will have to do your own monitoring to see if any specials or price drops come out, and then see if you can get them applied to your booking. A top-notch Disney specialist agency will do this for you automatically, adjusting your reservation to reflect any current offers or discounts.

Travelocity sometimes has special deals on Disney cruises. They are usually fairly last-minute offers, most typically no more than 6 months in advance. Travelocity also sometimes advertises “15% off shore excursions” but be aware that those are privately booked excursions through a company called Port Promotions, NOT the official Disney excursions.

Expedia has the same base prices as everyone else, but occasionally they will have their own additional offer, like onboard credit or extra Expedia rewards points. Be sure to read the terms and conditions carefully; in some cases there are sharp limits on the extra rewards or credit, or it will only apply to the cruise fare for the first two guests instead of the entire cruise fare.

11 ways to save money on a Disney cruise

Summer Hull

Update : Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .

Two travel truths right now are that travel has become very expensive and air travel is more unpredictable and unpleasant than normal. Personally, I spent $700 round-trip each on domestic economy tickets to take my kid to summer camp 1,000 miles away. That's absolutely insane.

On the other end of the spectrum, another type of travel is having a different kind of moment.

This type of travel remains affordable and typically isn't as stressful as dealing with airports, delays and cancellations. In fact, I'd argue it's the most relaxing and affordable vacation available right now: a cruise ship.

Personally, I'm partial to Disney Cruise Line .

Disney Cruise Line has a reputation for being expensive and designed just for families — though neither of those things actually has to be true . While these cruises can be more expensive than some other cruise lines, if you can select a port you can drive to, you may be surprised at how affordable a Disney cruise can be when viewed as an all-in vacation price.

Here's how to save money on a Disney cruise — and find the cheaper Disney cruises that start at around $500 per person (based on double occupancy) for the entire experience.

That's less than that painful $700 flight — which, unlike a cruise, doesn't include accommodations, meals or entertainment.

Pick the dates that start at just over $1,000

Yes, Disney Cruise Line costs more than Carnival or Royal Caribbean, but throw away the notion that a Disney cruise is unattainably expensive. It simply isn't true. The peak school break weeks are expensive, but with so many three- and four-night sailings, you can choose a long weekend and avoid those pricey weeks if you want to.

As an example, two people can sail for three nights from Miami to the Bahamas on Disney Dream from Friday, Sept. 9 to Monday, Sept. 12 for just $1255.72 in a verandah cabin (not some windowless inside space).

discount disney cruises 2023

Good luck finding a hotel you actually want to stay at that weekend for three nights in Miami for that price — and remember this $1,256 rate is the price for the entire cruise experience, not just the room.

You don't have to sail from Florida ports during hurricane season to find that $1,000-ish price point. You can sail for roughly the same price from Galveston, Texas to Mexico on Disney Magic in January 2023 on a four-night cruise to Mexico for just $1,441 for two people in a balcony cabin.

Adding two kids to that same Galveston itinerary to make a trip for four people would raise the price to $2,324.

Or, sail from San Diego to Mexico starting at $1,086 in an inside cabin or $1,278 for a verandah room.

discount disney cruises 2023

Think about it. That $2,324 rate from Galveston for four people works out to $145 per person, per day — which isn't bad compared to what other trips cost these days.

For those same travel dates of Jan. 27-31, 2023, it would cost a family of four $1,444 for four nonstop Basic Economy flights on United from Houston to Cancun. Four nights of lodging at the all-inclusive Hyatt Ziva resort in Cancun (which includes meals, entertainment and a kids club, like the sailing does) come to $3,392 for those four nights.

For the flights and hotel stay, that's just over double the cost of the Disney Cruise for the same number of days visiting roughly the same destination.

Let Disney choose your cabin

A good way to save money on a Disney cruise is to let the cruise line choose your cabin in exchange for a discounted fare. These are called guaranteed rates. You pick the room type (inside, verandah, etc.) but Disney gets to be the one that selects exactly which room within that category you get.

discount disney cruises 2023

These fares come with additional restrictions around payments and changes, but you can save up to 35% off the going rates. I've had great success with these discounted fares in the past. As long as you aren't too picky about where your room is on the ship, this strategy can be a tremendous way to save on your Disney cruise.

Book via a travel agent that gives you onboard credit

You can log onto the Disney Cruise Line website and book the cruise yourself, but you may not want to when you know a travel agent can do the work for you — and give you some credit back in the process.

The amount varies, but I've gotten up to $750 as a statement credit when I booked a pricier Disney cruise at the concierge level . On the more affordable cruises and cabins, expect the credit to be more in the $75-$200 range.

discount disney cruises 2023

While the amount will vary, you can often get somewhere between 5-10% of the price of your cruise back in the form of a gift card or shipboard spending credit through a travel agent or even via Costco Travel .

If you aren't sure where to start, you can get offers from agents who want to book your cruise — sometimes with extra perks and credits — via Cruise Compete .

Pay with discounted Disney gift cards

At wholesale clubs, such as Sam's Club and Costco, you can reliably purchase Disney gift cards at a discount . Sometimes, these discounts get even bigger around sales such as Black Friday. But on an ongoing basis, you can usually get a $500 Disney gift card for about $485.

That's not a huge discount, but if you paid for your $3,000 Disney cruise with those cards, it would save you $90.

If you have a Target credit card, you can also save 5% on Disney gift cards at Target. On that same $3,000 Disney Cruise, that's $150 saved by going that route.

Remember that you can often earn bonus points with certain credit cards when shopping for Disney gift cards depending on where you purchase them. Office supply stores, grocery stores and even wholesale clubs can be good bonus categories for different rewards credit cards, allowing you to earn 3, 4 or 5 points per dollar on your card while you buy your gift cards.

Use your credit card points

Not all credit card points can easily translate to a "free" Disney cruise, but some can.

The easiest way to do this is to pay some — or all — of the cruise with a credit card that lets you use your points at a fixed value to erase a travel charge. This way, you could book with a travel agent to get that onboard credit and then use your points to wipe out your deposit or final payment.

For example, if you put the charge on your Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card or Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card , you could use the miles at 1 cent each in value to wipe out the cost. The first example given, on the three-night cruise from Miami to the Bahamas for $1,255 ,would take about 125,500 Venture miles to fully erase the cash cost.

With those two welcome bonuses currently each at 75,000 bonus miles after $4,000 in spending in the first three months from account opening, that's not an unrealistic goal.

Earn 75,000 bonus miles worth $750 in travel with the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card after $4,000 in spending in three months from account opening.

Upgrade at the port for less

This tip isn't exactly about saving money overall, but it is a way to get a better room for less than the original list price.

If the cruise isn't sold out, you can go to a special desk at the port before you board and ask about any space-available discounted upgrades. At Port Canaveral, where all the Disney check-in desks are on the left side of the terminal building, the upgrade desk is the rightmost desk.

discount disney cruises 2023

The cost to upgrade will be related to the room type you've booked and the one you'd like to upgrade to. The supervisor will use a pre-printed chart to find that cost differential. It will cost less than if you had booked a better room initially, sometimes by about half, though that number varies.

On our Disney Dream cruise this spring, I was able to upgrade to a larger and more deluxe cabin for $34. Total. Get to the terminal as soon as you can if you are hoping for a suite or concierge upgrade because those are very limited and go quickly.

While I haven't done it, I've also heard that even cheaper prices become available on board once the ship sets sail, though I haven't tried that myself.

Save 10% by putting a deposit for your next cruise down while you're on board

The easiest way to save 10% on a Disney cruise doesn't work for your first cruise, but can work for all subsequent ones.

When you are on a Disney Cruise Line ship, you can put a $250 placeholder deposit down on a future Disney cruise to be used within two years. This can be done in your Disney Cruise Line Navigator app while on board.

You don't have to pick which cruise you want to do at that moment, but by putting that $250 in a placeholder you can not only apply that $250 when you ultimately pick your next Disney cruise but also save 10% off the rate valid on most dates and room types in the process.

discount disney cruises 2023

That one step can save you hundreds of dollars on your vacation. Worst case scenario, that $250 is refunded to you if you don't book another cruise in the next two years. That happened to us during the pandemic, and the money came back automatically and without a problem once the 24 months were up.

BYOB and skip the extras

If you are looking to trim costs on your Disney cruise, bring things from home that you would otherwise likely purchase.

For example, you can bring up to six cans of beer or two bottles of wine per person aged 21 and up. Instead of paying cruise prices for those beverages, you can bring what you want from home at regular land-based prices, up to those maximum limits.

You can also bring one case of unopened water bottles on board. These come in handy for shore excursions or when you need to hydrate by the pool. (Better yet, pack a refillable water bottle.)

Since a Disney Cruise already includes meals, room service, snacks, soft-serve ice cream, fountain drinks and plenty of entertainment, you don't need to spend anything additional on board if you don't want to. This is especially true on a new-to-you ship and on those shorter three- and four-night cruises where there is more than enough to do and explore already.

Just carry on a few beverages and skip all the extras.

discount disney cruises 2023

If your sailing goes to Disney Cruise Line's private island, Castaway Cay , beach chairs, umbrellas, the ocean waterslide and lunch on the island are also included at no extra charge.

discount disney cruises 2023

Seek out spa discounts

If you're focused on saving money, you'll want to skip the spa entirely on your cruise. But if nothing says vacation like a massage, you can find a discount on onboard spa services on a Disney cruise.

I've received a port day discount that was about 20% off because most people book their treatments on sea days, and the spa is less busy when the ship is docked. The Disney Visa also advertises a 20% discount on select massages or facials on port days on an ongoing basis.

I've also received $50 off a second service while checking out for my first. It's fairly common for cruise ship spas to offer discounts when you book multiple treatments.

discount disney cruises 2023

If you don't see a discount advertised, just ask at the spa desk. That's how I got hooked up with spa deals on previous Disney cruises.

Use Disney Visa onboard cruise discounts

In addition to the 20% off select spa treatments, Disney Visa cardholders also get 10% off a Castaway Cay package that includes snorkel gear, a bike rental and an inner tube. Additional discounts include 10% off onboard merchandise purchases of $50 or more and onboard photos.

discount disney cruises 2023

If you need time to spread out payments, those with a Disney Visa can also get a 0% annual percentage rate on their Disney vacation for six months. Right now, the card also has a welcome bonus of up to $300 toward a Disney vacation.

Book early and go off-peak

This is a no-brainer tip to avid cruisers, but if you are newer to cruising, know that booking early and sailing off-peak are great ways to save money on a Disney cruise.

I booked our Alaska cruise for the summer of 2023 the day the calendar opened this year because the price typically increases as the sailing date nears. You can sometimes find last-minute specials, but most of the time, cruise prices only go one direction — up.

You'll put 20% down when you first book and then have until much closer to sailing to pay off the remaining 80%.

discount disney cruises 2023

Date flexibility will also help you save money on a Disney cruise. The same itinerary that costs $2,000 in September will be up to three times more expensive if you want to sail over winter break.

If you can't find any affordable prices, I recommend scrolling the cruise list by price instead of starting with the perfect date or itinerary. A sailing you may not have initially considered may turn out to be the perfect vacation option.

Bottom line

Believe it or not, a Disney cruise can be much cheaper than a trip to the Disney theme parks. ( A cruise is often much less stressful, too .)

Remember that $2,324 four-night sailing from Galveston to Mexico for a family of four? At $145 per person, per night, it's absolutely less than a trip to Disney World. Park tickets alone these days can be close to $145 per person and Disney resort rooms are $200-$700 or more per night, depending on your resort choice.

Add food costs on top of that, and you're almost certainly well above the price of a Disney cruise.

discount disney cruises 2023

If you stack on some of these tips to save money on your Disney cruise, you could knock anywhere from 10-25% off the list price, depending on how many of the tips you are able to use.

As for me, I'm seriously contemplating that January getaway from Texas that will take us to Mexico and provide for all our lodging, meal and entertainment needs in the process.

Now I just need to figure out how much in additional savings I can stack onto the already pretty fair rate.

Extra Guests Sail Free on Disney Cruise Line

discount disney cruises 2023

There’s a new Disney Cruise Line discount in celebration of Disney+ Day: third and fourth guests set sail for FREE with two full-fare passengers in the same stateroom. In this post, we’ll share details of the unprecedented discount, why it’s likely being offered, and more.

Lots of synergistic stuff is happening for Disney+ Day at Disney Parks. Disneyland Resort in California, Disneyland Paris, and Disney’s Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World are all getting decked out with festive décor, special character sightings, and photo opportunities. They’re also offering (or were, as it’ll be past tense by the time you read this) extra Early Entry.

There are also deals on Walt Disney World resorts for Disney+ Day. Earlier this morning, we shared those details in: Up to 20% Off Disney World Resorts at Christmas 2022 for Disney+ Subscribers . It’s a similar story with Disney Cruise Line, with one big difference:  this discount is impressive instead of underwhelming!

If you’re not a Disney+ subscriber, you still should check out this discount. You don’t really need to “crunch the numbers” to determine if you would save more by one member of your party purchasing a Disney+ subscription if you don’t already have one. I can answer that for you right now: you would.  That’ll cost you under $2 per month now, whereas this could save you hundreds of dollars or more on a cruise.

In order to access the page on Disneycruise.com with official discount details, you’ll need an active Disney+ account. We had some issues accessing the Walt Disney World deal earlier this morning, and offer some troubleshooting tips in that post. The TL;DR version of that is, failing all else, launch a private browsing window and login to Disneycruise.com with your Disney+ credentials.

Don’t worry if you can’t do that, or if you want a look at the special offer details before subscribing to the Disney+ streaming service, as we have those:

discount disney cruises 2023

In terms of commentary, it’s pretty obvious that Disney Cruise Line is still struggling to fully recover based on the degree of discounting we’ve seen firsthand.

In addition to the general public special offers , there are a number of deeper discounts for Florida residents, US military personnel, Canadian residents, Cast Members, travel agents, and other affiliations of which I’m probably unaware.

discount disney cruises 2023

Disney Cruise Line’s recent special offers prior to this Disney+ Day deal have included Halloween on the High Seas, Very Merry Time Christmas Cruises, Marvel Day at Sea, and other themed sailings. These discounts are still available, running between now and May 2023, with over 100 sailings discounted out of several departure cities including Port Canaveral and beyond.

Between around 2018 and early 2020, this degree of discounting simply was not occurring. Even during the ‘glory days’ of DCL deals, I don’t recall anything on par with what has been available in the last year. It’s a relatively unprecedented time for Disney Cruise Line deals, and it looks like it’ll last at least a few more months.

discount disney cruises 2023

It’s curious how the tables have turned when it comes to Walt Disney World v. DCL discounts. Between 2018 and 2020, deals at WDW were abundant and aggressive. Now, they’re relatively meager. Pent-up demand is still running strong for the parks, to the point that resort reservations are difficult even at full price for October through December 2022.

If you’re wondering what’s up with the DCL discounts, it’s due to health safety protocol. There are undoubtedly other contributing factors, but that’s the big one. This has discouraged some people from cruising while preventing others from doing so. With the end of testing for vaccinated guests , some members of the former group will have one big barrier removed later this month (or November 2022, in the case of the Disney Magic).

discount disney cruises 2023

I’m one member of this group. Not to belabor the point or rehash commentary covered elsewhere, but I’ve been in “wait and see” mode when it comes to cruising for a while. There have been too many hoops to jump through, compromises to the on-board experience, and the potential risk of being denied boarding erroneously.

Recently, some of that has been dropped and I’ve cruised aboard the new Disney Wish. I found the pre-departure testing to be nerve-racking. I essentially didn’t engage in any indoor activities for nearly two weeks beforehand and even then was worried about testing positive. To be blunt, that’s not something I would do again–we would’ve cancelled upcoming sailings had the policy remained in place.

discount disney cruises 2023

This may sound excessive, but I really didn’t want to deal with the hassle and uncertainty of being denied boarding. I enjoy cruising, but not enough to go through that repeatedly. Given the degree of discounting for cruises even as every other segment of the travel industry has been red hot, I cannot be alone in that sentiment.

In addition to people like me who didn’t want to deal with the hassles and headaches, there’s another huge pool of potential guests who flat-out cannot set sail aboard Disney Cruise Line at this time. There are undoubtedly others at the opposite end of the spectrum, who could cruise but would not out of concern about insufficient health safety measures aboard ships. I suspect the Diamond Princess and other incidents back in early 2020 have left lasting scars for some.

discount disney cruises 2023

Whatever the causes, the end result is that the pool of potential customers for Disney Cruise Line is smaller than normal–even as DCL has expanded its fleet by adding another ship. More supply but less demand is a recipe for savings, and we’re seeing exactly that play out with this Disney+ Day deal and other recent special offers.

Ultimately, it’ll be interesting to see how long these Disney Cruise Line discounts persist. My guess is as long as any health safety measures or restrictions remain in place, plus another 6 months or so. (Since very few people travel immediately upon booking.) In short, it’s a great time to set sail and take advantage of these unprecedented DCL discounts. It’s likely they’ll stick around until policies change (and also likely that policies will change very soon given their economic impact on DCL), so you probably have until at least May 2023 before rates start rising again.

YOUR THOUGHTS

What do you think of these Disney Cruise Line discounts for Disney+ Day? Will you be taking advantage of this special offer? Have you already booked one of the FL or CA resident or other deeply-discounted rates? If you booked this, do you think you ended up with a good price or do you feel like you’re overpaying? What was available or unavailable for your dates? Is this deal enough to convince you to book a cruise, or can you not justify DCL’s premium price points? Do you agree or disagree with our assessments? Any questions we can help you answer? Hearing your feedback–even when you disagree with us–is both interesting to us and helpful to other readers, so please share your thoughts below in the comments!

Nope. All the “cheap” (haha) cruises are going to the Caribbean (or the Bahamas). BORING! Now if they put their Norwegian Fjord cruise on sale, I’d be tempted.

Also – had no idea so many trolls read your column.

' src=

Thanks, Tom. We booked a 5 night cruise shortly after reading your original post. I actually happened to have a tab for the same sailing open from the day before, and it was more than $2500 cheaper than that tab! Still not sure it’s a great value, but probably got the per day cost for a verandah class room below what it would cost us to day a day at WDW between park tickets and room, and that’s before you even count F&B and Genie+ and ILL.

Your readership seems to skew aggressively anti-vaccination (especially for a disease that has killed over a million Americans and is still killing hundreds each day), but when I look at pricing for next years’ Alaska cruises and Europe sailings (with standard verandahs starting around $10k for a week on many sailings), I don’t think Disney is having any trouble filling its ships with parents who aren’t afraid of vaccinations. I’m looking forward to picking up dropped births at the holiday sailings cancellation deadlines if they policy stays in place! I think it should be in the next couple weeks? FWIW, I do agree that the recent vax upload and testing system was annoying, but the process on Celebrity and Princess was very smooth, so it didn’t have to be *as bad* as it was on Disney.

' src=

@JenL, respectfully I think most people seem to be anti MANDATE as opposed to anti VACCINATE. Especially when things are mandated to make people “feel safe” instead actually keeping people safe. There is a difference. Not trying to start any fights just clarifying. Tom if I went too far I’m sure you’ll kick my comment off 😀 And seems pretty clear to me anyway that if Disney wasn’t hurting for bookings they’d never have extended this offer in an attempt to entice people to sail. It does save quite a bit of money. I’m guessing after they drop their vaccination and testing mandates we won’t see deals like this again but time will tell. Thanks for all the great posts Tom!!

' src=

I felt a little silly booking a cruise on the Dream this morning when we’re already doing a cruise on the Magic in October (NYC to Canada!) but this kind of deal doesn’t strike twice. We’ve been on the Dream more than any other ship and it’s not one we were itching to return to but it’s the one that worked best with my work schedule. So, I’ll finally be able to find out the question that’s we’ve all been waiting for answer on: Was that awkward Bob Iger segment in Golden Mickeys replaced with an awkward Bob Chapek segment or has that bit been cut altogether?

' src=

Disney needs to get with program and end vaccinations for 12+ passengers like 9 other cruise lines have. RCL Norwegian Holland America, etc. they’re all hurting for passengers. Bahamas doesn’t require vaccinations to visit so what’s the hold up? Not requiring testing on vaccinated passengers isn’t following any scientific data, they’re the ones who keep getting it!

' src=

Tom and Sarah, thanks for all the info you provide. We were looking at DCL options the past few weeks for what will be our first Disney cruise. The Disney+ special offer was perfectly timed for us and definitely tipped the scales for our decision. We booked two cabins for 4 adults and 3 kids early Thursday morning. With the Disney+ offer, we saved $2190 as compared with the day-before rate. Our five night cruise on the Dream during MLK week with a Marvel day at sea in verandah cabins comes to an average of $945 pp after the discount. We think that will be a solid value.

' src=

I will go on a Disney cruise as long as they do have mandates. Because they don’t have them at the parks, I won’t go there. There are those of us with compromised immune systems that people just don’t seem to care about.

' src=

You are spot on. We are DVC members and would love to do a cruise. But I will never step foot on one of their ships until ALL mandates are dropped! My family will never get the vaccine so unless it is dropped we will never cruise.

' src=

I hate to tell you this but you are in the minority. People have moved on. There are definitely people out there who align with your thinking but the number of people who have moved on far surpasses it. A vaccinated person can spread it exactly the same as an unvaccinated person and can also get it just the same as an unvaccinated person. So there is no point in differentiating between vaccinated and unvaccinated.

' src=

Same. I’ve got two DCL cruises booked: a seven day in March and a ten day in July. Unless they drop all mandates I am cancelling both. I booked in the hopes that they will come to their senses but right now I’m just waiting.

' src=

100% agree. We’ve sailed 3 times and won’t ever again unless the mandates are dropped. It’s a joke at this point.

' src=

All of what you shared makes a ton of sense. The news coming off of cruise ships I think is what has a lot of folks apprehensive and holding back. While I think this is probably true of any travel, the online chatter in cruise forums shows a high level of people coming home from their trip with COVID. Whether its at higher rates than a Disney World vacation, I have no idea … but it seems like it is or may be.

You’re spot on. We’d love to go on a Disney cruise but won’t until all restrictions are dropped. Disney knows that’s the issue as well based on the very blunt surveys they push out if you get on the DCL website. It point blank asks if their mandates are the reason you’re sailing or the reason you won’t sail. Hope they drop all mandates sooner rather than later. We’re checking out other cruise lines. My husband always refused to cruise other lines as he felt he’d be disappointed after the amazing Disney cruises we’ve taken but is now willing to try other cheaper options. I can’t imagine paying the crazy high Disney cruise prices then spending the time before freaking out wondering if we’ll be let on or not. That’s not a vacation…

' src=

We were so excited to take advantage of this deal, but then only to find out they’re still requiring proof of vaccination. Oh well their loss, we won’t go until this nonsense is stopped.

' src=

You are correct in your assessments. We’re so anxious to cruise again on DCL and are in the pool of potential guests that can’t. Every week we check for news on protocols dropping off and it’s happening on other cruise lines. Starting to think about booking with another company but wishing Disney will drop all protocols so we can sail with them again!

How to Qualify for Florida Resident Discounts on Disney Cruises

Florida Residents must meet the following conditions to qualify for Florida Resident Discounts on Disney Cruises:

  • At check-in, at least one adult per stateroom must present proof of Florida residency . Guests without valid proof of Florida residency will be required to pay the difference before embarkation.
  • Valid proof of residency is required at the time of sailing. These include a Florida Driver’s License and a Florida Identification Card .

What should you do if one of these IDs is not available? You can present a valid government-issued photo ID (e.g., passport, driver’s license, state identification card) and one of these documents (dated within the past two months):

  • Utility bill (cable/electricity/phone/water)

2. Maximize Savings with Onboard Credit Promotions

One of the best ways to enhance your Disney cruise savings is by making the most of onboard credit promotions from top-rated Disney travel agencies like The Vacationeer . These credits essentially provide free money that can be redeemed for a variety of onboard amenities and services, including spa treatments, cocktails, shore excursions, activities, and souvenirs. Onboard credits can substantially lower your out-of-pocket expenses during your cruise, allowing you more flexibility to indulge in the onboard experiences you desire.

When booking a Disney cruise through The Vacationeer , clients receive substantial onboard credits, with amounts ranging from $25 to $1,000 , based on the total cruise cost and booking method. Combine these Disney onboard credits with Florida resident discounts for maximum savings and an enhanced cruise experience.

3. Score Last-Minute Disney Cruise Deals

Florida residents can save on their next Disney cruise by taking advantage of last-minute deals, also known as Restricted Guarantee fares. These special fares offer significant savings without sacrificing the magical experience Disney cruises are known for. By maintaining flexibility in your travel plans and stateroom choices, you can book a last-minute Disney cruise at a more affordable price.

Keep in mind that these deals cannot be combined with Florida Resident deals – you can only use one promotion at a time. However, you may still pair either offer with onboard credit provided by a travel agency for extra savings. Contact The Vacationeer to find the perfect last-minute Disney cruise and enjoy generous onboard credit as a booking bonus.

4. Save with Early Booking Discounts

Florida residents can secure savings by booking their Disney cruises early. Disney Cruise Line typically releases their itineraries over a year in advance, often offering their lowest standard fares upon public release. By booking their cruise well in advance, guests, including Florida residents, can take advantage of these discounted rates. Additionally, they will have access to a broader choice of staterooms and itineraries, as availability is at its highest when itineraries are initially released to the public.

However, keep in mind that booking your Disney cruise well in advance might make you ineligible for Florida Resident Discounts, which typically emerge just a few months prior to departure. As a result, you must weigh your options – deciding whether to wait for a Florida resident deal closer to the departure date or book early to lock in a lower rate and the best stateroom choices.

Florida residents have the unique benefit of multiple savings opportunities on Disney cruises, making it easier to plan an unforgettable and cost-effective vacation. Reach out to The Vacationeer to discuss your best options and find the perfect cruise for you.

5. Off-Season Savings Opportunities

Florida residents can save on their Disney cruise by traveling during the off-season. With lower prices due to reduced demand, sailing during less busy times offers a more affordable Disney vacation without sacrificing the experience. Consider booking during periods when the kids are in school and demand is lower.

Disney cruises are typically more affordable during:

  • January (except for New Year’s week)
  • Early February
  • May, September, and October
  • Early November
  • Early December

During these less busy periods, you may find lower rates , shorter lines , and less crowded onboard activities . Florida residents have an added advantage with this strategy, as they can travel during off-season dates more easily than those living farther away. As a result, you can enjoy your Disney cruise to the fullest while staying within your budget.

6. Inside Stateroom Savings Potential

Florida residents looking to save on their Disney cruise can opt for an Inside stateroom, which offers a more budget-friendly alternative than Oceanview, Verandah, and Concierge staterooms .

While Inside staterooms lack the natural light and views provided by Oceanview rooms or the private outdoor space of Verandah staterooms, they still provide a comfortable and roomy living area for guests to unwind. Inside staterooms differ substantially from the luxurious Concierge category, which features premium amenities and personalized services.

Although Inside rooms are more basic and don’t have a wow factor, they are perfect for travelers who plan on spending most of their time discovering the ship’s numerous attractions and are seeking a budget-friendly option.

To learn more about the various stateroom options and find the perfect fit for your Disney cruise, check out our comprehensive guide to the best staterooms on Disney cruises .

7. Disney Visa Cardholder Exclusive Savings

Florida residents who are Disney Visa credit cardholders can enjoy additional savings on their Disney cruise, including discounts on merchandise, onboard spa treatments, digital photo packages, and packages to Castaway Cay, Disney’s Private Island . These exclusive offers enhance the cruise experience while providing significant savings. Furthermore, Disney Visa cardholders may also receive special onboard credits when booking their cruise, adding extra value for Florida residents.

8. Leverage Disney Cruise Line’s Loyalty Program

Florida residents can access special rates and perks by joining Disney Cruise Line’s loyalty programs, Disney Vacation Club (DVC) and Castaway Club (CC). Both programs offer early booking options, better pricing, and more flexible reservations for cabins and dining.

The Disney Vacation Club is a timeshare program that lets members plan vacations at Disney destinations, including cruises. Members can use their points to book discounted cruises (because they always get “opening day pricing” that doesn’t change over time), attend exclusive onboard events, and save on future cruises.

There are four levels of membership in the Castaway Club , Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Pearl, based on how many cruises you have completed. There are a number of benefits associated with each tier, including priority check-in, early booking for excursions and dining, stateroom gifts, and exclusive events.

Florida residents can maximize their savings and enhance their Disney Cruise Line experience by utilizing these loyalty programs. Choose the program that aligns with your travel preferences and frequency.

9. Monitor Disney Cruise Promotions Closely

In addition to the exclusive Florida Residents Discounts mentioned in the first tip, Florida residents should also keep a close eye on other promotions and special offers from Disney Cruise Line. These can include seasonal discounts, themed cruises, military discounts , and discounts for specific groups. Staying informed about these promotions not only maximizes your savings potential but also helps you find the perfect Disney cruise tailored to your preferences.

Contact The Vacationeer to determine which promotions you may qualify for as a Florida resident, ensuring you get the best value on your magical Disney cruise vacation.

10. Utilize the Expertise of a Disney Travel Agency

Florida residents can secure the best savings on Disney cruises by enlisting the assistance of a Disney travel agency like The Vacationeer . These specialized agencies have access to a wealth of exclusive promotions, discounts, and deals that may not be easily found elsewhere. Additionally, their dedicated travel agents provide personalized service, helping guests find the most suitable cruise packages and special discounts tailored to their preferences and budgets.

In 2023, Disney debuted a brand new holiday party — and it looks like it may be returning again in 2024.

Jollywood Nights

Jollywood Nights

Disney Jollywood Nights took place on select nights during the holiday season in Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and it required a separate admission ticket to experience all the exclusive holiday fun throughout the park .

Jollywood Nights

Given that it was a brand new holiday offering, we weren’t sure whether it would return in 2024 — but it seems that Disney has kind of indirectly confirmed its return through a casting notice!

Online Submissions Open for Jollywood Nights Dancers

Disney is now accepting online submissions for Disney Jollywood Nights seasonal dancers through Monday, June 24, 2024 at 11:30PM ET.

Disney Auditions

The listing notes that these auditions are for a “new holiday offering” to be performed on select nights between November and December.

Disney Auditions

Despite the “all-new stage show” reference, however, it appears that they may be specifically looking for dancers for the Disney Holidays in Hollywood show that took place at the Theater of the Stars in 2023.

Disney Auditions

This variety show featured characters such as Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Princess Tiana, Belle, Minnie, and Mickey, who along with dancers performed several skits and musical numbers.

Of course, they could be changing elements of the show, but we’ll have to wait to check it out later this year!

Finale

Holidays in Hollywood in 2023

Disney is seeking “male and female presenting dancers with exceptional dance technique and performance quality. Must be proficient in multiple styles of dance that include musical theatre-jazz and swing. Knowledge of partnering and dance lifts is a plus! We strongly encourage BIPOC dancers and dancers of all shapes and sizes to attend.”

Holidays in Hollywood

The casting notice states that potential in-person callbacks will take place on July 30, 2024 in Orlando. Those who will be invited to a callback will be notified by July 9, 2024. Click here to see the casting notice!

Should You Avoid Monorail Loop Resorts in 2024?

When planning a vacation at Walt Disney World, many guests are drawn to the convenience, theming, and luxury of the monorail loop resorts. These iconic properties—the Polynesian Resort, Contemporary Resort, Grand Floridian Resort, and their associated Disney Vacation Club properties—offer unparalleled access to Magic Kingdom and stunning views of the park. Their location, however, comes with a very high price tag. That makes these resorts aspirational “someday” resorts for many Disney vacationers. Unfortunately, recent satisfaction scores indicate a significant decline in guest satisfaction from 2023 to 2024. Should you avoid the monorail loop resorts this year? Let’s dive into the data and find out.

Explain the Math

Before we delve into the specifics of each resort, it’s important to understand the numbers behind the guest satisfaction scores. These scores, on a scale of 1 to 5, are derived from post-visit surveys completed by guests who have recently stayed at these resorts. We have over 4000 of these reviews since the beginning of 2023. A score of 5 indicates that they were “very satisfied” with their stay, while a score of 1 suggests they were “very dissatisfied”.

To analyze the changes, we’ll look at the average overall satisfaction scores from 2023 and 2024 for each resort. The goal is to identify trends and potential reasons behind these shifts, and then to use the results to help you inform planning for your next Walt Disney World vacation.

Polynesian Resort

The Polynesian Resort experienced the largest drop in overall satisfaction – from 4.76 in 2023 to 4.16 in 2024 . This large decrease is also among the easiest to explain among all of the monorail loop resorts.

discount disney cruises 2023

Throughout 2024, ongoing construction on the new DVC tower has generated noise throughout the day, and may cause other inconveniences based on traffic. This includes the closure of the walkway to the Grand Floridian, making a (rather long) walk to the Magic Kingdom impossible, and also impacting guests ability to easily access the great dining options at the Grand Floridian.

Combine the construction disrupting this resort’s usually serene atmosphere with the high average cost of rooms, and you have a recipe for disappointment. And the results are so impactful that the Polynesian is currently the second-lowest-rated resort in all of Walt Disney World. The only resort that scores worse is All-Star Movies. So, statistically, you’re better off staying almost anywhere else compared to the Polynesian this year. Expect these results to continue at least until the end of the year, when the new Tower opens.

Contemporary Resort

The Contemporary Resort has the second-largest drop in satisfaction this year, going from 4.66 in 2023 to 4.24 in 2024 , a decrease of 0.42 points.

discount disney cruises 2023

In survey comments, many guests cite the “half-hearted” retheming of the resort’s rooms with the addition of several elements inspired by the Incredibles. But this theming isn’t something new for 2024 – rooms have had these features since 2021. Instead, new comments that have appeared in 2024 consider more frequent monorail breakdowns, crowds surrounding the gingerbread display during the winter holiday season, and the expensive but disappointing onsite restaurants and lounges.

Still, the Contemporary is the most easily walkable resort to the Magic Kingdom if the monorail is down. And it’s also the resort that is furthest away from construction on the new Polynesian tower. But it has some of the most-expensive rooms on property that are categorized as theme park views but mostly show off a large parking lot.

Polynesian Villas & Bungalows

The Polynesian Villas & Bungalows are slightly less impacted by the construction than their Deluxe counterpart. The DVC villas only saw their satisfaction score decline from 4.74 in 2023 to 4.45 in 2024 , a decrease of 0.29 points.

discount disney cruises 2023

Similar to the Polynesian resort, the Villas & Bungalows are still near the construction noise and traffic thanks to the building of the new tower. But thankfully, most of the villas are located on the opposite side of the resort to the construction, so the noise is less noticeable. Still, there is some impact. Additionally, guests in the bungalows note an increase in maintenance issues – especially the air conditioning and some malfunctioning fixtures. For the amount of money they spend on a bungalow, guests expect perfection, and the experience this year is far from perfect.

Villas at the Grand Floridian

The Villas at the Grand Floridian experienced a drop in overall satisfaction from 4.66 in 2023 to 4.37 in 2024 , a decrease of 0.29 points. Way back in 2022, the Villas at Grand Floridian were the highest-rated rooms in all of Walt Disney World. Things started slipping in 2023, but the resort was still pretty well-rated. But in 2024, the Villas are now in the bottom third of WDW resorts.

discount disney cruises 2023

The main contributing factor to the decreased scores? That same Polynesian tower construction. In fact, the new tower is closer to the original Grand Floridian Villas building than it is to many of the Polynesian buildings. So while you try to relax and enjoy that glorious penguin fountain in the lobby, you’re likely to hear moving vehicles and active construction. Additionally, these villas are some of the most expensive accommodations you’ll find on property. For that price, you don’t expect to deal with the construction of a new building, plus even more construction around the resort, and some restaurant unavailability.

Bay Lake Tower

Bay Lake Tower’s satisfaction score decreased slightly (but still statistically significantly) from 4.63 in 2023 to 4.49 in 2024 , a decline of 0.14 points.

discount disney cruises 2023

Thankfully, Bay Lake Tower is easily walkable to and from the Magic Kingdom, so monorail breakdowns or traffic don’t impact it as much as the other monorail loop resorts. And it’s the furthest possible away from the construction of the Polynesian tower. But, an increasing number of comments mention that the rooms in Bay Lake Tower are showing their age – with worn furniture and decor that feels outdated. Bay Lake Tower is slated to get a refurbishment beginning in September of this year, and gradually working its way through the resort until September 2025. That means updated rooms … but also more noise in the resort, and other potential inconveniences.

Grand Floridian Resort

Finally, the Grand Floridian Resort is the only monorail loop resort where the satisfaction score remained steady at 4.44 in both 2023 and 2024 .

discount disney cruises 2023

The Grand Floridian’s reputation as Disney’s flagship resort continues to attract guests who appreciate its theming and high-end amenities and dining options. Thankfully, it has been able to maintain a consistent level of service and quality that meets guest expectations. Rooms were being refurbished in 2023, and some dining locations were still closed. Thankfully, these projects are mostly wrapped up, which should boost satisfaction scores. Unfortunately, some of that benefit is wiped out so far this year by increased crowds in the lobby, in restaurants, and utilizing the monorail station, yielding the steady score.

Overall WDW Resort Scores in 2024

discount disney cruises 2023

In the chart above, you can see the average overall satisfaction at every Walt Disney World resort in 2, as of early June. Monorail loop resorts are highlighted in gold. There are 16 resorts that currently score better than any of the monorail loop options, including Deluxe, DVC, and even Moderate resorts.

If you’d like to stay near Magic Kingdom, Wilderness Lodge and its two DVC counterparts (Copper Creek and Boulder Ridge) all score highly. They are just a boat ride away from the Magic Kingdom, but aren’t impacted by any of the construction or crowds at the monorail loop resorts.

In 2023, the only monorail loop resort in the bottom half of the overall satisfaction scores was Grand Floridian. This year, almost all monorail loop resorts are in the bottom half. The Polynesian Resort had the third-highest overall satisfaction in 2023, and has dropped all of the way to second-lowest in 2024.

What Does This Mean for You?

Should you avoid the monorail loop resorts this year? The answer depends on your priorities and what you value most in a Disney resort stay. Here are some practical tips based on the data:

  • Consider the Timing: If you’re planning a stay at the Polynesian Resort or Polynesian Villas & Bungalows, be aware of ongoing construction and how it might impact your experience throughout the rest of 2024. Check reviews of other stays during construction to see if you would be okay with a similar experience.
  • Service Expectations: With reported service issues across several resorts, consider managing your expectations or choosing times when staffing levels might be more stable compared to guest crowds, such as outside of peak holiday seasons.
  • Value for Money: If cost is a concern, compare the prices of these premium resorts with other Disney accommodations. And if you’re determined to stay on the monorail loop, consider renting DVC points to cut down on the cost of your room.
  • Stay Informed: Regularly check reviews and updates from recent guests. Resort conditions and service levels can change, and staying informed can help you choose the best option for your stay.

Have you stayed on the monorail loop this year? Or do you prefer other WDW resorts? Let us know in the comments!

Celebrity ascent: the best dining, amenities and more on celebrity cruises' newest ship.

Top-notch eateries, adults-only areas and entertainment options stand out.

Celebrity Ascent Review

The Solarium on the Celebrity Ascent.

Megan duBois

Key Takeaways

  • There are 32 different dining and drinking venues on board, from Le Voyage by celebrity chef Daniel Boulud to the line's iconic Martini Bar.
  • The onboard entertainment is incredible. The "Awaken" show combines popular music with acrobatics and lasers, while Ascent After Dark: Shine the Night invites cruisers to don metallic or sequin outfits for a deck party under the stars.
  • The Solarium adults-only pool area is a relaxing spot with comfortable lounge chairs, a pool and hot tubs; head to Eden for delightful cocktails and optimal sunset views.

You can think of Celebrity Cruises as the more adult cousin of Royal Caribbean International – which makes sense, considering both cruise lines are owned by Royal Caribbean Group. With all of the recent buzz around both brands, I was excited to sail on Celebrity Cruises' newest ship, Celebrity Ascent, in its debut month. I embarked out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in December 2023.

The 17-deck, 141,420-ton ship has 1,646 staterooms and can carry 3,260 guests at double occupancy. At 1,073 feet long and 128 feet wide, the ship has plenty of space for upscale amenities, edgy entertainment and incredible dining venues. The Edge Series ship also has more than 1,400 crew members who hail from 60 different countries around the world.

As an avid cruiser who has taken more than 50 ocean and river voyages on almost a dozen cruise lines, I found Celebrity Ascent lived up to the hype. The ship itself is stunning, and each area has a distinct vibe. I loved the ample amount of food and drink opportunities – there are 32 different venues – and the standout onboard entertainment was like nothing I had seen before on a cruise ship.

Celebrity Ascent itineraries

Thermal suite heated loungers on the Celebrity Ascent.

Celebrity Ascent sails around the Mediterranean and the Caribbean over the next few years. Summer 2024 brings Ascent to Mediterranean ports of call in Greece, Turkey, Italy, France, Spain and Portugal. The Mediterranean season ends in October 2024, with a 13-night transatlantic sailing departing from Barcelona, Spain.

Late fall and winter sailings depart from Fort Lauderdale. The Caribbean season runs between November 2024 and April 2025. It includes seven- to nine-night voyages calling on ports like Aruba , Bonaire and Curacao ; Bimini, Bahamas ; Labadee, Haiti; Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands ; Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic ; and St. Maarten and St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

In late April 2025, it's back to the Mediterranean for the 2025 season between May and October. Ascent then returns to the Caribbean for sailings in late 2025; destinations include southern Caribbean locales, plus the Panama Canal and Royal Caribbean's private island in the Bahamas, Perfect Day at CocoCay. Similar Caribbean sailings are also on sale for early 2026.

Who should sail on Celebrity Ascent?

Sunset Bar on the Celebrity Ascent.

Celebrity Ascent, like its Edge Series sister ships, caters to adults traveling together. The overall vibe of the ship is upscale and modern, with plenty of places to grab a drink, enjoy a meal and watch a show. Couples can enjoy an elevated date night in Le Grand Bistro, while the aptly named Sunset Bar – which overlooks the rear of the ship – is the spot to be with a cocktail in hand as the sun sets into the horizon. This bar was easily my favorite spot on board; I spent most afternoons here enjoying a cocktail.

The deck parties, of which Ascent After Dark: Shine the Night is the premier event, are a fun time – but they aren't so loud that guests can hear the bass thumping in the staterooms below. Shows at The Theatre are fully immersive, with incredible technology and great music that had me dancing in my seat.

If you are traveling with children, know that there aren't many places on board for kids to just hang out and be kids. The Camp at Sea kids club is crammed into a small area on Deck 3, away from the main Grand Plaza and The Martini Bar.

Cruises on Ascent can be expensive, but Celebrity often runs deals on sailings. Without any promotions, sailings around the Mediterranean in 2024 and 2025 may run between about $1,000 and $5,600 per person. In comparison, 2024 and 2025 Caribbean voyages may cost between about $2,000 and $4,400 per person before discounts. (Note: Cruise rates can change frequently, based on demand and availability.)

The stateroom

Stateroom interior on the Celebrity Ascent.

There are over two dozen different stateroom styles on Celebrity Ascent. The smallest (and usually cheapest) rooms are the Inside Staterooms, which offer between 181 and 202 square feet of space. For solo travelers, the Single Inside Staterooms offer the same amenities as a double occupancy room, but with a smaller 103-square-foot layout and no single supplement fee at booking.

Ocean View Staterooms are slightly larger, at 200 to 242 square feet. There are three different room styles; the main difference among them is the size of the window. Options range from small windows in the middle of the wall to large, floor-to-ceiling picture windows.

Ascent's balcony cabins are quite varied, but the majority are Infinite Veranda Staterooms, where the balcony is actually a uniquely designed window that can be opened to let the ocean breeze in. There is a set of glass doors that can be drawn to make this space more private, as well.

Concierge Staterooms allow guests access to a dedicated concierge staff and exclusive onboard events. AquaClass cabins all feature the infinite balcony design, plus unlimited access to the SEA Thermal Suite, complimentary dining at Blu restaurant, fitness classes and a spa concierge.

Celebrity Ascent's suites are all part of The Retreat, the line's ship-within-a-ship concept where cruisers have access to an exclusive restaurant, a sun deck with a pool, a lounge and a dedicated crew. Suites range in size and style, from smaller 319-square-foot studios to massive two-bedroom suites offering more than 2,500 square feet of indoor and outdoor space.

When I sailed on Celebrity Ascent, I stayed in an AquaClass stateroom. The main living space had a king-size bed, which was cozy after long days of exploring the ship and nights spent on the dance floor. I found the cabin's couch a bit uncomfortable, but there was plenty of storage space in the large closet and drawers. Conveniently, the bed was high enough to fit my suitcases under.

Because this was my first time in an Infinite Veranda room, I was interested to see how the balcony actually worked. After pressing a button for the window to roll down, my room instantly filled with humid air – not the sea breeze I was expecting. The air conditioner also turns off when the window is down, so it takes a long time for the room to cool off again. I only opened the window once because of this. For me, the extra veranda space served as more of a sitting area to take in the views than a spot to enjoy the ocean breeze.

My stateroom's bathroom was spacious, with a larger-than-usual standup rain shower. I also loved the eco-friendly bath amenities, which smelled divine. I used the in-room bathrobes and slippers every day of the cruise.

I loved that my AquaClass stateroom came with some amenities that are not included in other Infinite Veranda rooms. There were two yoga mats, two bottles of water that were refreshed daily, a welcome bottle of sparkling wine, an umbrella, binoculars, complimentary shoeshine service and a pillow menu. AquaClass guests also have unlimited access to the spa's thermal suite, complimentary fitness classes and a dedicated spa concierge. I went to the thermal suite daily to enjoy the heated loungers and steam rooms.

Best amenities on Celebrity Ascent

Theater show on the Celebrity Ascent.

On Celebrity Ascent, you'll never be bored. Over just a few days, I was able to participate in game shows and dance parties, sit back and enjoy live music, and spend some time by the pool. While I don't gamble, the casino always seemed to be full when I walked by, and someone was always cheering about hitting the jackpot.

For live entertainment, be sure to catch Flash Flair Fusion, the nightly bartending performance at the Martini Bar. Meanwhile, the Theatre hosted three main shows during my sailing: "Residency," "Awaken" and "Bridges." (Based on my experience, "Awaken" is the production to prioritize.)

Additionally, The Club hosts most of the ship's game shows and some smaller live music events. I loved hanging out at this venue; it was never overly packed with people, and the games were pure fun. I even got called up on stage to participate in one of the games and ended up winning a Celebrity Cruises-branded hat.

For some outdoor fun, hit the onboard pickleball court. Or, head to the Rooftop Garden, where float pools face the ocean and plenty of comfy seating awaits. I loved how lush this space felt, thanks to all of the live plants surrounding the seating areas. This is also the spot to catch movies at night.

If you're looking for an even more unique place to hang out, head to The Magic Carpet. This bright orange, glass-encased bar hangs out over the side of the ship and is the perfect spot for an after-dinner drink. The Magic Carpet can move up and down the side of the ship, docking at select decks for a set amount of time. I loved hanging here at night as the ship was pulling out of port to see the islands light up and watch other ships pass by.

When planning out your evenings, keep in mind that it can be a trek to get from one onboard activity to the next – especially when there is very little time between many of the major scheduled events. One night, I started in The Club to watch a game show, then immediately had to get to the Theatre. After the theater performance, I had to walk the entire length of the ship and take the stairs to get to the night show in Eden. Then, after Eden, it was time for the Shine the Night deck party. By the time I got back to my stateroom, I was exhausted.

Best dining venues on Celebrity Ascent

Pastries at Le Grand Bistro on the Celebrity Ascent.

There are 32 different spots for food and drinks on Celebrity Ascent, including four main dining rooms; four casual complimentary eateries; eight specialty restaurants; 14 cafes, lounges and bars; and two exclusive venues.

Included with the base fare are meals at the four main dining rooms, all of which serve the same menus every day, plus a small exclusive menu that's tailored to the theme of each restaurant. (For example, if you're dining in Cyprus, there is a small list of Cyprus-exclusive dishes that highlight Mediterranean cuisine, while the Normandie restaurant serves up French favorites.)

Other restaurants included in the cruise rate are Eden Cafe & Bar, which serves light bites and sweets; Mast Grill, offering burgers and salads; and Oceanview Cafe, a buffet open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

For an additional cost, head to specialty dining venues like the stunning Le Voyage by Daniel Boulud, which is great for date night; Le Grand Bistro, a fun take on a classic French Bistro; or Eden Restaurant, which features an entirely plant-based menu.

My favorite specialty dining option – and overall favorite restaurant on the ship – was Raw on 5. It features stunning chilled seafood towers, fresh sashimi and hot dishes like fresh lobster and shrimp wontons. Each dish was prepared beautifully, the service was top-notch and our table next to the window offered great views.

However, one restaurant I would skip is Fine Cut Steakhouse. It is a pretty standard steakhouse, and nothing on the menu really stood out to me. The upscale ambiance was also diminished by music floating in from the nearby Grand Plaza and Martini Bar (think: everything from One Direction to Cher). While both artists are great to hear while sipping a martini in a public space, I don't want to hear them while dining at an expensive restaurant.

Best excursions on Celebrity Ascent

Outdoor sundeck on the Celebrity Ascent.

Travelers cruising to the Caribbean should book a beach outing. There are abundant excursion options in St. Maarten and St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands . If you're into local brews, try the Small Group: Brewery & Beach Tour Philipsburg, St. Maarten .

On a past Mediterranean cruise, I explored both Florence and Pisa, Italy, while docked in the Italian city of Livorno. Celebrity offers a similar excursion aboard the Ascent. The day trip includes a scenic drive through the Tuscan countryside; exploring Florence and seeing the Ponte Vecchio and the Duomo; and a trip to Pisa to see the iconic learning tower. In Rome , consider doing an all-day tour where you can see the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain and St. Peter's Square.

Regardless of where your cruise is headed, you may choose to explore ports on your own instead. If that's the case, be sure to give yourself enough time to get back to the ship. I always try to return at least an hour before the scheduled sail away time.

Overall impressions of Celebrity Ascent

Rooftop Garden on the Celebrity Ascent.

When it comes to ships that cater to a mostly adult audience, Celebrity Ascent really has it all. From stunning common areas to incredible dining and entertainment, I was never bored on this ship. What I loved most was the wide range of entertainment, from pop-up music around the ship to full-blown experiences that need to be seen to be believed. The food on the ship is a step above most other major cruise lines, and the number of dining options is great, especially for longer sailings.

While I loved my room's location and amenities as a whole, I found the Infinite Veranda design to be a bit of a waste. When I did use it, my room got hot quickly and took a while to cool back down. I would consider booking a traditional veranda cabin next time, or a stateroom with a large picture window to save some money without sacrificing the ocean views.
