Disney Cruise Line setting sail on first Asia-based ship in 2025

Disney Cruise Line has announced its first ship with a home port in Asia, and it will be setting sail for three- and four-night itineraries next year. 

The Disney Adventure, currently under construction at the MV Werften shipyard in Wismar, Germany, will set sail in 2025 from Singapore's Marina Bay Cruise Centre for at least five years, as a result of a collaboration between Disney Cruise Line and the SIngapore Tourism Board.

"We're bringing the magic of Disney Cruise Line to Asia for the first time ever, and we want to give our guests the cruise relaxation and Disney fun they can only experience aboard one of our ships," Sharon Siskie, senior vice president and general manager of Disney Cruise Line, said in a press release on June 26. 

"When they set sail on the Disney Adventure, guests will find incredible, immersive areas that bring the worlds of Disney, Pixar and Marvel to life in ways like never before – and these uniquely Disney experiences will inspire families to reconnect, recharge and make unforgettable memories that they'll cherish forever."

Disney Adventure will have seven themed areas throughout the ship, including San Fransokyo Street from "Big Hero 6," a town square, Marvel Landing and a Toy Story Place, among others. 

The southeast Asian cruise is meant to be the ultimate family travel experience, with "dedicated spaces and clubs for kids, tweens and teens, while adults relax and unwind with premium dining, lounge and spa experiences."

How the cheapest interior and balcony cabins on Carnival's new cruise ship compare — and why the pricier one is worth it

• Carnival's new Carnival Firenze  cruise ship set sail in late April.
• Its interior cabins are $160 cheaper per person than the ones with balconies.
• The cramped balcony stateroom is worth the additional cost.

I finally realized that my parents are, in fact, always right. Unfortunately, learning my lesson took a stint in a windowless cabin on a Carnival cruise .

In mid-May, I found myself stuck on a four-night Carnival Firenze cruise with my family. I was there for work — they were there to enjoy the sun. And that they did, as they luxuriated in a cabin with a balcony while I was stuck in a drab, windowless dungeon.

Never again will I think of my parents as 'snobby' for wanting the more expensive accommodation (sorry, Mom and Dad).

My parents, occasional cruisers, have always preferred staterooms with balconies. After my stint in the ship's interior accommodation, I now understand why balconies are the most popular cabin category.

For Firenze's cheapest itinerary in 2024 — a four-night roundtrip voyage from Long Beach, California, to Catalina Island and Ensenada, Mexico — a dual-occupancy interior cabin starts at $359 per person.

Ones with balconies command a minimum of $519 per person.

That's a $160 difference — and well worth the extra cash.

Carnival Firenze, the company’s newest vessel, set sail in April.

But that doesn't mean it's a brand-new ship.

Firenze had initially joined the fleet of another Carnival Corp brand , Costa Cruises, in 2020 with plans to launch in China — that is, until the COVID-19 pandemic.

Carnival Cruise Line then acquired Firenze and its sister ship, Venezia, in 2022 to grow its US footprint amid "strong interest in people wanting to sail with us," a Carnival spokesperson told Business Insider.

But my interior cabin looked more like an ancient motel than a four-year-old ship.

The spokesperson said Firenze underwent a two-month refresh to "install the Carnival Fun Italian Style Concept."

This Italianized vision came as a photo of Florence, Italy, behind my bed, half covered by pillows. It's for the best — the print looked misplaced, unnecessary, and tacky.

At least it matched the color palette of the equally ugly carpet.

The furniture was functional, but that doesn’t mean it was pretty.

The gray chaise clashed with the bafflingly ugly yellow and red carpet, while the faux marble and wood side table looked as cheap as my fare.

Thankfully, I have no gripes about the desk and closet. Both were sizable and looked like ones I've seen on more expensive and modern cruise ships.

'Expensive' and 'modern' could be the antithesis of my bathroom. It was a total eyesore.

The yellow and red tiles would've been better suited in a McDonald's. But no design crime was bigger than the lack of designated storage units.

The only shelving came preoccupied with tissue boxes and toilet paper rolls, an unnecessary amenity given that my cabin attendant cleaned and restocked my room daily. I would've rather had one less spare toilet paper roll if that meant I could keep my skincare products inside the bathroom instead of out on the desk.

On the bright side, the bathroom and bedroom felt surprisingly spacious for 150 square feet.

Unbeknownst to me, Carnival had put me in one of the ship's accessible, wheelchair-friendly accommodations. As a person without physical disabilities, this meant the shower — a curtain surrounding floor drains — was one of the largest I've had at sea.

Back in the living room, I could've starfished on the floor without hitting any furniture.

Complaints about its appearance aside, the room was large and almost perfectly functional — easily worth its $90-a-night price tag.

But without any natural light, the dated, dark, and mismatched furniture made my cabin look more like a drab hospital room.

Think I'm being dramatic? One look at my parent's balcony cabin will prove my point.

Some of the furniture in my dungeon and their breezy hotel room at sea looked identical.

But the light-filled room and less hideous carpet made the chaise and side table feel more at home.

Unfortunately, nothing could've saved the still misplaced-looking photo of Italy.

However, no amount of natural light could've saved the stateroom from feeling cramped.

The cabin is 72 square feet larger than my interior one. But don't expect to starfish here: The narrow layout and furniture didn't leave much room to spare.

Our four-person family could comfortably lounge in my interior room. Four people inside the balcony cabin required flexible maneuvering around each other and the furniture.

The tiny bathroom made the one in my interior accommodation feel palatial.

Yet, despite being much smaller, the extra shelving — noticeably deprived of excess paper products — made this bathroom more functional.

But the tight layout is worth it for the private outdoor space and light.

The ocean breeze and view provided the perfect backdrop for my parent's peaceful early mornings.

Meanwhile, my early mornings were spent in a dingy, liminal space-like bedroom, never fully sure of the exact time. I felt like a gremlin who lived in perpetual darkness, only reminded that the sun had, in fact, risen when I stopped by my family's bright cabin.

Seeing my mom lounge around with the balcony door cracked open, reading some documents without turning the lights on, was enviable.

A quiet outdoor space is especially important on a ship like Carnival Firenze.

The vessel is loud and rowdy, as is expected of a Carnival cruise. I struggled to find a quiet, relaxing lounge that wasn't overwhelmed by screaming children, screaming adults, or poorly mixed music.

Our cabins were the only truly quiet spaces on the ship. And I'd much rather read a book on a balcony with ocean views than in a dreary, dark interior stateroom.

I should probably add an asterisk next to 'truly quiet spaces.'

The interior and balcony accommodations did share one terrible similarity: ultra-thin walls.

Rowdy passersby could be heard clearly from inside both rooms. The neighbors' TV and late-night conversations constantly woke my dad up. (Maybe my interior cabin wasn't so bad after all.)

But, like I said, I'd trade a gloomy stateroom for a balcony and the chance to eavesdrop on my neighbors.

As usual, my parent's decision to book a balcony instead of an interior cabin was the way to go.

Unless you're on an ultra-strict budget, it'll be worth the additional cost. A little sun and fresh air can go a long way for your sanity, especially on a ship where silence and peace are an upcharged luxury.

A fire broke out Tuesday on the largest cruise ship in the world — the same liner where a passenger plunged to their death last month.

Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas was docked in Costa Maya, Mexico when the small blaze erupted, causing the massive ship to briefly lose power, officials told USA Today.

The fire was isolated to a crew area and was quickly extinguished without any injuries.

The ship’s backup power was activated, preventing the vessel from deviating from its itinerary. The 20-deck vessel is sailing a week-long Western Caribbean cruise that departed from Miami, Florida on Saturday, according to  CruiseMapper .

The minor blaze isn’t the first notable incident on the Icon of the Seas since setting sail on its maiden voyage in January.

In May, a passenger leapt off the 1,200-foot cruise ship on the first day of the week-long expedition to Honduras. The boat was only 300 miles from its Florida origin port at the time.

Passengers told The Post about the “dystopian” scene that ensued when people aboard prematurely celebrated that he was pulled from the water, assuming the man was alive.

One month earlier, 20-year-old passenger Levion Parker plunged to his death off another Royal Caribbean cruise after a reportedly drunken fight with his father.

His remains have not yet been found after he climbed through a window on the Liberty of the Seas and jumped in front of his younger brother and dad.

Royal Caribbean did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.

How Much do Cruise Ship Captains Make? (Salary 2024)

Have you ever wondered how much does a cruise ship captain make a year? The exact amount can vary depending on several factors, including experience, the size and prestige of the ship, and more.

It’s estimated that cruise captains make an average of $96,000 a year. Some may even earn upwards of $200,000 per year while at the other end of the spectrum for small vessels and those newly promoted to the position make approximately $50,000 annually.

Read on to see how we arose at these figures and the various factors that influence the amount.

What is the Average Cruise Ship Captain Salary?

According to Comparably , a US Cruise captain on average earns a US$93,328 annual salary.

Another source of cruise captain salary data is from Payscale which indicates a ship captain’s average salary at US$ 96,347 a year.

From their stats, we can see they estimate the bottom 10% earn $48,000 a year and the top 10% $190,000 a year.

Interestingly they also break down estimated earnings by “Pay by Experience Level for Ship Captains”.

On average the ship captains with under 10 years of experience earn on average of US$70,000 to $77,000 a year, compared to those with over 10 years expecting to earn US$98,000.

Bear in mind the Payscale stats are based on “ship captains” and not specifically cruise ship captains, but we can expect the earnings to be in the right ballpark as they are on par with the Comparably stats.

However, this is just an average, and as you most likely know there is a wide range of cruise ship sizes, from those that carry 100 to 200 passengers to mega-ships that carry and are responsible for over 5000 passengers as well as 1500+ crew members.

So in this post, we look at the factors that influence a cruise captain’s annual salary and how much they make a year plus a look at some of the added perks of the job to be added on top.

Average Cruise Ship Captain Salary Per Month

Taking the average salary of cruise ship captain at US$93,328, this equates to a monthly average salary of US$ 7777.33.

We have also worked out the monthly salaries for those cruise ship captains earning higher annual salaries as follows:

• $125,000 a year equates to US$ 10,416 a month
• $150,000 a year equates to US$ 12,500 a month
• $175,000 a year equates to US$ 14,583 a month
• $200,000 a year equates to US$ 16,666 a month

Factors That influence Cruise Captain Pay

There are a number of factors that have an impact on how much a cruise captain can expect to get paid a year.

Years of Experience

One of the most important factors determining a cruise ship captain’s pay is their experience.

A newly qualified captain with little experience can expect to earn much less than a captain who has been sailing the seas for many years.

It’s not unusual for a cruise line to require that a captain has at least 10 years of experience before they can be considered for the role, including a number of those as Staff Captain, which is the second in command.

Quite simply, the more years of experience they have as an actual captain, the more they can expect to be paid.

Size and Prestige of Vessel

The next big factor is the size and type of vessel they are the captain of.

Generally, the larger the vessel, the more responsibility the captain has and the higher their salary will be.

Of course, there are other types of vessels such as smaller luxury cruises or cruise ships that have to navigate particularly difficult waters. These types of cruises will often pay their captains a little more to account for the extra skills and experience required.

Company Size

The size of the company can also affect a cruise ship captain’s salary.

For example, a small company that only operates one or two vessels will not be able to pay its captain as much as a large corporate company with dozens of ships.

However, it is worth noting that some of the smaller companies may be more willing to negotiate on salary and offer other perks, such as a share of the profits, which can make up for the lower salary.

The final factor we want to mention is location.

Captains who are based in Europe or North America will generally be paid more than those based in other parts of the world, such as Asia or South America.

This is because the cost of living is higher in these regions and companies need to pay their captains enough to cover their basic expenses.

The captain will also be responsible for making sure that the ship stays within the safe waters and does not stray into dangerous areas, avoiding any hazards that could potentially damage the ship or put the lives of those on board at risk.

This will also include making the decisions of when to leave ports in the event of passengers not onboarding on time, and possibly leaving them behind.

Safety of Passengers and Crew

It is also the responsibility of the captain to make sure that the ship is compliant with all maritime regulations.

The safety of the passengers and crew is the responsibility of the captain and in the event of an accident should be the last person to leave the ship, putting the safety of all passengers and crew before themselves.

Oversea Ship Maintenance and Operations

The cruise ship captain is in charge of overseeing the seaworthiness of the ship, ensuring correct maintenance and engineering operations of the vessel are upheld to the highest standards while at sea.

This includes making sure that all safety equipment is in good working order and that the crew is properly trained in its use.

The captain of a cruise ship is responsible for making sure that the ship complies with all local and international customs and immigration laws.

The captain may not deal with these issues first-hand, but it’s their responsibility to ensure the crew in the relevant departments are adhering to the rules and regulations as required.

Cruise Ship Security

There are many possible security issues a ship could encounter including piracy, stowaways, and terrorist threats.

The captain of a cruise ship may also be responsible for dealing with unruly or even criminal activities and felons which may have to result in a passenger being imprisoned in the cruise ship jail or brig as they are otherwise known.

The captain of a cruise ship is responsible for dealing with any emergency situations that may arise during the voyage.

Work Schedule On Call 24/7

How  to Become a Cruise Ship Captain

To become a cruise captain, you will need a master’s degree in maritime studies and 10 to 15 years of experience working in various positions on ocean vessels.

Captains will need to have passed the Federal Maritime Authority captain’s license exam once they have 10 years of experience.

Some of the skills that are required for this job include:

• Good communication

Captains also need to be able to maintain their composure and act decisively in an emergency.

Does a Cruise Captain Have to Go Down With the Ship?

In the event of a  disaster, it is the captain’s obligation and legal duty to be the last man off the ship.   The captain should stay on board for as long as possible ensuring that all passengers and crew are evacuated safely in the event of such an emergency.

One recent well-known case was that of the  Costa Concordia in 2013. In this instance, captain Francesco Schettino left the ship while passengers and crew members were still on board and ended up being one of the first to reach dry land.

He was sentenced to 16 years imprisonment, of which one year was attributed to his actions of abandoning passengers.

Thankfully these kinds of disasters are extremely rare events and the vast majority of cruise captains are worthy of their important and well-paid role on the ship.

How Many Captains are on a Cruise Ship?

There is only ever one captain at a time on a cruise ship. The captain usually takes the position for a set period of time, anywhere from 8 weeks to 12 weeks. Although it varies depending on the cruise line.

Often there will be two captains rotating work contracts on the ship. While one is on vacation, the other captain takes over.

Often a captain is on the ship for a few years at a time, usually with an eye to moving up to a bigger ship in the fleet should the opportunity arise.

Can Women Be Cruise Captains?

What is the job of a cruise director? Meet Marques Matthias.

If a cruise vacation was a movie, Marques Matthias would be the narrator.

As a cruise director for Carnival Cruise Line, Matthias' voice guides guests through their days onboard, outlining the ship’s scheduled activities and giving instructions over the vessel’s speakers, or emceeing events.

“Being able to (take) a cruise and realize that people get paid to have that vacation life, I was like, ‘That's something I want to be a part of,’” said Matthias, who goes by MarQ Anthony on the voyages.

The 36-year-old Minnesotan, who has worked for the line since 2015, is cruise director of the line’s newest ship, Carnival Venezia . He spoke to USA TODAY about what it's like to work on a cruise ship, launching the line’s new vessel and more.

What brought you to the cruise industry and this role?

Matthias: My grandfather passed away … and my mom kind of wanted to change the way that we were looking at our holidays and stuff. She was like, “You know what, I remember so many moments of life that were about the vacations I had with my father.” And so we decided that instead of doing Christmas as normal with the gift exchange and all that, that we were going to shake it up and be able to live on the memories of being on vacation together.

So, we ended up taking a cruise, and I had just the best time. We met so many of the crew members, and they were like, “Have you ever thought about working on a cruise ship?” And I was like: “I'm from Minnesota. We don't have cruise ships up there.” And they were like, “OK, that's not like a thing, though. You can still get away.” I was working in a cubicle (at a science museum), and I got back and was like, That life was really exciting . And so I thought, Let me just go for it.

So I put in my application, and I started off as part of the Fun Squad and had a chance to do that and just shared the interest that maybe one day, someday, I could be the cruise director. … And within a year, I ended up having the opportunity to get (experience) and so then I went to the Carnival Splendor, and that was my first ship as a cruise director. And I was only supposed to cover for a vacation, and then it turned out to be a full contract.

How long is a typical contract?

Matthias: Most of our contracts are between like four and six months that we’re on the ship, and then about two months is vacation that we’ll go to our designated homes and get to breathe a little bit and then come back rejuvenated for another dose of it.

How long do you spend on one ship in particular?

Matthias: It kind of depends. One of the cool things about Carnival is that they're always looking at us to be able to bring out the best of ourselves. So, if we are maybe trialing a ship out of Miami and we just (can’t necessarily) get that vibe of Miami, then we can have the conversations of, like, “Oh, I would really like to try a different home port, maybe a different, longer or shorter itinerary.” 

So, it's cool that we do have the option to kind of switch up our ships, but if we do really enjoy (it) and we're finding that we've got a good groove on things, then we also can stick there for a couple of years at a time.

What does a typical day look like?

Matthias: It depends on the day. … So a typical sea day could literally be starting at 8:30 in the morning, where I'm starting to prepare the day, and then I go into (The Wave) Morning Show, and then I go into our debarkation presentation. And then right after that, like, for example, today, we had our Father's Day event on the Lido deck, so then we celebrated with that. And then right afterward, we had our Groove for St. Jude (charity event), and then I ran downstairs to grab a sweat rag and wipe off my face. … So there's all these events that coordinate the majority of my day. But then I'm also responsible for doing a couple (of) reports at the end of the day, making sure that my Fun Squad – which is the team that I'm the direct supervisor toward – (is) also prepared and set and whatever. And so I have the sit-down time to be able to chat with them, check in with them. …

Port days, we get up, we get everybody off the ship, and then that's kind of like our downtime. So there are times where we get to go and explore the ports, or sometimes we just need to stick around and take a nap or do some laundry.

And then for days … where it's debarkation, it's a little bit more stressful just because we've got (thousands of) guests that are going to be all getting off the ship and then we have a little bit of time to kind of catch a breath, and then we get ready to do it all over again.

What is your relationship with the guests like?

Matthias: I think for me, one of the biggest parts of this job is I am really all about making sure that not only is everybody having a good time, (but I also) want to make sure everybody's included. So I really try to emphasize being able to make sure that I am off the stage and walking around the ship just as much, because I want people to feel that they can come up to me and be like, “Hey, I don't know you, but you seem kind of cool and can we get a picture?” Absolutely. …

So for me, even though the days can be long, they can be tiring, it's that experience of being able to say, “I want to get you away from some of the stress, some of the headache of life on land, to give you this fun for a little while and make sure that you know that you're just as special as the person next to you and the person next to them and the person next to them.”

What’s it like to launch a new ship?

Matthias: Being able to bring the new ship (to the fleet) is stressful because there's so much pressure. But it's also really cool because – my mom had said to me, “Look, you've got all these people that are going to be looking towards you, but remember, they chose you for a reason, and it's because you know what you're doing.” 

… I get to be the face of this brand new beautiful ship, but I also know that I've got a really amazing support system of my Fun Squad, of the hotel director, of the housekeeping team, from the food operations teams. Everyone's here because, at the end of the day, we just want to make sure that there's a great experience.

What is your favorite part of doing this type of work?

Matthias: To be completely honest, as cheesy as people might think it is, it's actually the people. When I originally got into the idea of working on a cruise ship, I thought, This is going to be a moment for myself to be able to go explore the world (and) see all these amazing places that I've never been to . And I have been so honored to be able to go and see so many corners and pockets of the world that I never even heard of, (and) then to consistently be able to go back there.

But for me, it's the memories of being there with the people that make that experience so much more amazing and being able to meet now friends that literally come from all over the world.

Cruise Ship Salary, Wages, Banking & Savings

Each crew member has an employment contract that specifies their salary, but how do you really get paid when you work on board a cruise ship? What are the taxes and deductions for cruise ship crew? How do you get your salary from the ship to your bank account and is it possible to save money while working on a cruise ship? Here are some answers.

Cruise Ship Employee Contract and Agreements

Each crew member must sign an employment agreement or an employment contract before starting each contract. They may do this before they leave home or once onboard their ship. The contract lists the crewmember’s position, the length of the employment agreement and how much they will be paid.

The employee’s employment contract also states the expected hours that will be worked. For example an employment agreement may state that you can expect to work an average of 11 hours per day, seven days per week. Alternatively, the contract may state that the employee may work up to 70 hours per week, seven days per week.

Some contracts may pay overtime. In the case of Royal Caribbean, their Getting Onboard Employee Handbook states, “You may be required to work more than 70 hours per week, or overtime. If so, non-management employees will be paid for the overtime hours worked.” Check with your recruiter if overtime is paid and at what number of hours is considered overtime.

Cruise Ship Jobs Salary

Not all employees that work in the same department and in the same position make the same salary. Each employment contract is different depending on crewmember’s nationality. For example, a youth counsellor from the Philippines makes less than a youth counsellor from Canada. This also explains why some cruise lines hire a limited amount of counsellors from North America. Each employee must sign their employment agreement, agreeing to the specified salary.

How Are Tips Paid?

Cruise lines generally do not make any promises as to how much tips or gratuities will actually be paid. Some all-inclusive cruise lines (where tips are included on cruise fare for passenger) pay a higher wage for cabin stewards and waiters because there is no tip pool. Alternatively, many cruise lines pay a lower wage because passengers do pay tips.

Generally speaking, during each cruise on each ship, passengers pay gratuities which go into a “pool” that is divided between the crewmembers that are part of the hotel and dining pool. For many cruise lines, the gratuities are automatically deducted from the passenger’s onboard account to be paid out to the crew at the end of the month.

Taxes on Cruise Ship Employment Income

Crew members are responsible for any taxes due to their country of origin. Only United States citizens or employees that reside in the USA will have US federal taxes deducted from their pay. Depending on your employment contract and the country where you are a citizen will determine how you are paid onboard also.

Some countries do not require their citizens to pay taxes on employment income if they are a seafarer. On the other hand if you are a citizen of a country that requires you to report your worldwide income on your tax return, you may have to pay taxes when you file your tax return at the end of the year. The bottom line is that taxes will not be deducted from your payroll, but some nationalities will be responsible to remit taxes at the end of the year.

How Cruise Ship Crew Members Get Paid

Crew members are paid on a monthly basis at the end of each month. Depending on your nationality and what you have organized with your hiring partner or human resource recruiter will determine what currency you will be paid in, if you will be paid in cash, or if you will be paid by direct deposit.

If the crew member starts their contract halfway through the month they may have to wait until the end of the next full month to be paid. This depends on the cruise line you work for and your employment agreement.

Many cruise lines have a direct deposit option for their employees working on cruise ships. This is typically set up before the crewmember even leaves home. Crew members may also choose to wire transfer money to their land-based bank account for a fee. Make sure to bring a void check and a bank statement that shows the bank account number and the name on the account. Alternatively, crew members can obtain a crew safety deposit box onboard some cruise ships to keep their money secure.

Be aware of how much cash you want to travel with on your way home. Most countries make you declare how much currency you have in your possession. Plus, you may not to want to make any large one lump sum once you get to your home bank. Most banks must report single deposits in excess of $10,000.

The Crew Office

The Crew Office on a cruise ship is managed by the Crew Purser or Crew Administrator. This office looks after the crew payroll including the payment of gratuities. They also collect crew expenses (ie. bar bills) at the end of each month. While working onboard, the crew office is your link to head office and all correspondence about payroll issues need to be sent through the crew office.

How to Save Money Working on a Cruise Ship

The best way to save money is to not have the cash on board. By either direct deposit or wiring your money home, having no access to the cash virtually eliminates the temptation to spend it. You have very few expenses working onboard since your normal monthly expenses (like rent, food, etc.) are covered or inexpensive. If you want to end your contract with a large amount of savings, you’ll need to learn to resist shopping in the ports and in the shops on board.
