What size truck you need to tow a 25-foot RV depends on the trailer’s weight. Length does not dictate tow ratings. Just because a trailer is shorter doesn’t necessarily mean it’s really light.

Travel trailers in the 20–25-foot range generally average between 4,000 and 6,000 pounds, which can be easily towed by a 1/2-ton truck or large SUV.

Some can be towed by a smaller vehicle but it’s always best to know the loaded weight of your trailer and not exceed it. Using a CAT scale will tell you a lot about the weight of your RV when you have it loaded with your specific things and packed the way you like to do so.

Life is full of limits, which is why the RV lifestyle is so appealing. It allows people from all walks of life to travel and explore. Just take a look at the parking lot of the Grand Canyon. You’ll see RVs of every type, length, weight, and manufacturer from every corner of the country. Many RV consumers have a desire to keep their more fuel-efficient vehicles, yet they still want a travel trailer that has all the amenities needed to take week-long trips. New construction materials are making RVs lighter, stronger, and more versatile. Features that exist in 30 plus foot coaches are now seen in trailers as small as 15 feet or less – small travel trailers.

The small RV category is unique unto itself. Big-name manufacturers compete with independent small companies. Many of the small companies create new technologies the big names haven’t even thought of yet. For our discussion, we will define small travel trailers by the following criteria:

• They are self-contained- this means that all features are within the coach itself. Trailers that only have outdoor kitchens fall within another category.
• The coach does not have an interior length of more than 23 feet in length. They may be a part of a series that have floorplans that exceed this length, but we will define this.
• Dry weights will not exceed 3,500 pounds. We will focus our attention on those that are the lightest in weight. Some do go as high as 4,000, but this is an effect of materials used. Some of the trailers are a part of a series that extend out of the small travel trailer parameters. We will feature those models that fall within our small trailer limits.

1. jayco hummingbird.

Jayco’s quality manufacturing is a benchmark in the industry. The Hummingbird line is a great introduction to the small and compact category. Each floorplan gives great examples of small trailer features. Yet their self-contained models also have full feature amenities as well.

The 17MBS is 19.9 feet in length and has a 3,095-pound dry weight. The front has a murphy bed that shares space with a sofa. This is a feature that many manufacturers use as a space saver. As a trade-off, Jayco gives you a separate toilet and shower instead of a combined wet bath for an amenity balance.

This particular coach is an off-road model with 15 inch Goodyear mud tires and a raised chassis. They seal the underbelly with a layer of Astro-Foil to protect it and as an insulator. Despite its size, there is still plenty of space for linens, wardrobe, and pantry items within.

The 17RK is the exact length and dry weight of the 17MBS but is very different. The front of the coach has a permanent queen-size bed. It has a driver-side slide out that with a U-shaped dinette and refrigerator/microwave. The kitchen counter takes up the entire width of the rear. The tradeoff is a combination wet bath.

As you can see, Jayco does a lot with the space. Even their compact trailer has its advantages. If you are looking to get into the small travel trailer RV lifestyle, Jayco is a great place to start.

2. Casita Travel Trailers

Casita is a family-owned business that started in 1983. Their coaches have many configurations you can choose from. Their products can travel off-road and off-season with enough room to fit everyone.

Casita designs their trailers based on two sizes. Their two-piece fiberglass shells come in either 16 feet or 17 feet. Each size then has a standard or deluxe package. The deluxe models offer an all-in-one toilet/shower wet bath and black water holding tank.

Standard packages use the wet bath area for added storage or sitting/sleeping space. This allows for more people to be comfortable. It also means you would have to rely on campground facilities for restrooms and showers. If your camping style is more off-grid, the deluxe package may fit your needs better.

Casita matches a floorplan with a model. This means that if you want the two- twin bed floorplan, you would choose the Independence model. Whichever model you choose, weight and pricing are the same. The manufacturer sets the price of their products.

• The 16-foot deluxe dry weight is 2,185 pounds and is $19,279.
• The 17-foot standard dry weight is 2,210 pounds and is $18,320.

3. Scamp Trailers

The Scamp Travel Trailer – the iconic small travel trailers – has been a Minnesota manufacturer since 1972. Instead of mass production, each coach is built to the customer’s specifications. They can choose the size, layout, and interior features they want.

According to some owners, the building time took a matter of a few weeks. What they enjoyed the most out of the experience was the interactive experience. The manufacturer sent pictures and answered questions during the whole process.

Once completed, customers pick up their unit at Scamp’s headquarters in Backus, Minnesota. If the customer can’t get there, Scamp will go the extra mile to help their customers out. The company can deliver the RV to the customer anywhere in the continental United States.

Scamp has three sizes. The 13 and 16-foot models are small travel trailers, and the 19 is a fifth wheel . Each size has a standard and deluxe version. The 13 foot has two layouts, while the 16 foot has five. Some models have a combination toilet/shower wet baths, others do not.

Costs are unique to each trailer. Scamp does not publish their starting prices. Some owners have discussed their pricing on forums across the internet. Generally, these price points have come in between $15,000 to $20,000 depending on the model, package, and additional features they have chosen.

The 13-foot standard layouts give you either a sofa or a dinette upfront. The first layout gives you a sofa that can convert into a bunk bed. The second layout replaces the sofa for a wet bath and a second closet. In the deluxe version, the choice is between a dinette or a wet bath.

The features that stay constant are the rear dinettes that fold out to make the master bedroom. They also come with full kitchens that include sinks and small refrigerators.

Standard models offer a more basic approach to camping. Kitchens have a 1.9 cubic foot refrigerator as a part of additional packages. Many electronic features like TV hookups are optional. Customers that want to choose individual amenities may decide on these models.

Deluxe models have more of a complete package offering than the standard models. Bigger features and amenities are available. Many electronics like TV hookups, air conditioners, vinyl flooring, and other high-end features can be added.

4. Airstream Bambi

With the retirement of the Sport, Airstream further developed their Bambi series. This small coach gave the company the ability to join in on the small travel trailers market. It also stays within the weight capacities small coach campers are looking for.

It comes in a 16, 19, 20, and 22-foot floor plan. Each one has a fixed double bed, dinette, full kitchen, and bathroom. The 16-foot model has a combined wet bath, but the others have full bathrooms. Each dinette folds down to allow an additional two sleepers.

The Bambi is spacious for its size. Airstream uses light colors in the coach to keep the interior bright and enhance the open feel. They also keep to their European styling to give the unit a sophisticated look.

As expected, Airstream uses only the best when it comes to its amenities. The bed has a memory foam mattress. The entertainment system uses JBL sound equipment and an LED TV. There are also USB ports and LED lights throughout the RV itself.

Each coach has an optional solar panel system that can be factory installed. Otherwise, each one comes prewired for external solar panel setups.

5. KZ RV Escape

The KZ Escape series is the most versatile series on our list. Within the 11 floorplans, seven of them fit into our definition of small travel trailers. Among them, there are hybrids, slideouts, and even a toy hauler that measure within 22 feet or less.

KZ designs this series with everybody in mind. Their one of the models caters to the off-road enthusiast. The E191BH sits higher and comes with 15-inch mud tires. It also has electronic-controlled heated holding tanks that help with off-season camping.

The E171MB has a unique storage feature. On the slide-out that holds the refrigerator is a storage space that has both an inside and outside access. It also has a queen-size murphy bed that shares its space with a sofa. The coach has a full bathroom and kitchen that completes the interior space.

The E171 MB is 19.8 feet in length and has a dry weight of 3,170 pounds. Your midsize-SUV won’t have any problems towing this coach.

Little Guy Trailer Company has reinvigorated the teardrop trailer for the 21st century. This RV maker has created a self-contained teardrop with modern conveniences. They keep with the tradition of the teardrop by keeping tow weights at car towing capacities.

Little Guy Mini Max is light enough to use your car/SUV crossover, yet gives you features of a full-size RV. The bright maple hardwood cabinetry contains a full kitchen. This also includes a category-leading four cubic foot fridge. Many RVs of this size don’t have refrigerators this large.

The Little Guy Max is four feet long and weighs in a little under 2,000 pounds. Many 21-foot trailers weigh more than this. One of the great features of this coach is the ability to hook up your small SUV as your tow vehicle.

The versatility of the dinette is quite special. Most fold down to a double bed. This one gives you the option of either two twin beds or a queen-size configuration. This works by having the dinette on a hydraulic and sliding bed slats that support the middle of the bed.

A lot of thought went into the wet bath of these coaches. Toilet paper covers are waterproof. The shower uses 2.2 gallons a minute to conserve water. The space allows a person to move around without knocking into the toilet while cleaning off.

RV Pro Magazine rated the Little Guy Max Best in Show for 2018 at the RVIA National RV Trade Show. The RV maker won for its nostalgic styling, modern features, and amount of storage for its size.

7. Forest River R-Pod

The Forest River R-Pod is celebrating its 10th year in production. Many of the features and amenities on this RV borrow from its big brothers and sisters. With 15 different floorplans to choose from, there is an R-Pod for everyone in this small category.

The 10th-anniversary package comes with many upgraded standard features. Furrion sound systems, solar charging ports, and seamless kitchen countertops are some. Other popular features include a pet-friendly frame-mounted utility hook for your dog.

Most of the floorplans have permanent queen-size beds. Other sleeping spaces include fold-down dinettes, bunk beds, and murphy beds. The R-Pod is a master of the ability to make the most of the space in its coach. This is why it has been so popular for so long.

Popular add-ons include a solar panel system with a 110-watt panel and a 1,000-watt inverter. Some models can have a factory built-in outdoor kitchen added as well. The R-Pod has a screen room that attaches to your awning to complete your outdoor space.

8. Homegrown Trailers- Timberline

When tent camping does not work out for the whole family, most get into the RV lifestyle. The founder of Homegrown Trailers took that a step further. He and his team built a trailer out of sustainable materials in Kirkland, Washington.

The Timberline is an 18.10-foot travel trailer that uses green materials in its construction. Both the interior and exterior are made from wood paneling. Wool insulation creates a strong barrier against the outdoor temperatures.

The off-grid package has a 600-800 solar panel wattage to power all the electronic needs of the coach. The wet bath area gives you the option of a clean or composting toilet. For easy access, the grey water tank is external and simple to drain.

Everything about this coach is green and sustainable. They did not forget about styling and comfort. The aerodynamic shape is teardrop inspired to cut down on wind resistance. There is plenty of headroom and floorspace to allow up to five people to move around.

The coach has plenty of modern conveniences too. A full kitchen with a refrigerator allows meal preparation. Heat and air conditioning units are optional add-ons as well.

9. Oliver Travel Trailers

• 18.5- 23.6 feet in length
• 3,400- 4,600 pounds dry weight
• 6 different floorplans
• $48,900- $55,900

When you buy an Oliver Travel Trailer (a.k.a. “Ollie”), you become a member of the club. Oliver sells its trailers factory direct. They only build them per customer order. Once built, buyers pick up their trailers at the factory in Hohenwald, Tennessee.

Currently, Ollie makes the Elite I and II. The Elite I has two floorplans, and Elite II has four. The main bed is either permanent or a fold-down dinette. The third sleeping space is either a twin bed or two-seater dinette that folds down.

Ollies come with many standard features that compete with many big names in the RV world. What makes Ollie so unique are the many add-ons that others don’t offer. One surprising option is dual awnings. One for the door side, and another for the opposite side of the coach.

They also offer thought-provoking ideas. Specialized materials that clear away moisture from condensation areas. External storage baskets and receivers for bike racks. Propane water heaters and various electronic signal boosters. There are many other optional add-ons worth exploring.

Once a customer has worked with their sales representative, the order goes to the factory. Production time can take 8 to 10 weeks to build your RV. Once it’s ready, the customer comes to the factory and spends their first night in their new coach.

The buying process is as unique as the trailer itself.

10. Lance Trailer

• 14- 25 feet in length
• 2,600-5,875 pounds dry weight
• 12 different floorplans
• Sleep up to 7 people
• $27,500- $66,400

Of the many big names that need mention, Lance is the unexpected winner. Their lineup offers nine models that are 22 feet or less in length. Only three of them have a dry weight under 4,000 pounds. They may be heavy, but their design is extraordinary.

In fact, one of their models, the Lance 2075 is the Best in Show award winner with RV Pro Magazine for 2020 . This model won due to its best technique of separating the bedroom area from the living room space. It has a queen-size bed in front and a U-shaped dinette in the rear that is on a slide-out.

The lightest model makes the best use of its 14 feet of interior space. It has a front sofa that folds out to a double bed. The rear has a full bathroom instead of a wet bath. It also includes a full kitchen.

Instead of trying to squeeze in a dinette, the designers placed two padded chairs with a small table. This allows the RVers to sit and relax in front of a big picture window. No matter how it’s used, there is still a feeling of spaciousness and relaxation.

If you look at Lance’s line up, all the models they have a focus on one point. Their small travel trailers give their users the most use of open space. The company wants its customers to have a relaxing experience, no matter the length of the RV.

11. Happier Camper

• 10 feet in length
• 1,100 pounds dry weight
• Numerous different floorplans
• $24,950 starting price

Have you ever looked around your RV and said to yourself, “I wish I had…?” If you owned an HC1 from Happier Camper, your response might be, “I have a box for that.”

This Los Angeles, California company has taken modular camping to the next level. The basis of the coach’s interior starts with 20-inch x 20-inch plastic boxes. Some are for storage. Others are more complicated. One can be the deluxe kitchen with pull out fridge, stove, and sink. Another could hold the wooden countertops for tables.

To configure the things you need, you place and stack the boxes according to what you need at the time. If you need to use the kitchen and dinette, you place the kitchen setup on top of storage boxes. The tabletop fits into the position between the seating.

At night, you place all the boxes on the same level and the sleeping pad over them. This gives you enough sleeping space for up to five people at night. With the large windows on three of the walls, there is plenty of cross breeze at night to keep things cool.

To add to the appeal, the designers gave their trailer a classic 1950’s nostalgic appeal. It comes in seven different colors you can choose from.

Additional options include a loading ramp to help you load your dirt bikes and other toys. A 100-watt solar panel and inverter. An elevated frame with off-road tires. To add space, they have a screen room that connects to the tailgate. You can also get a dry flush toilet.

With this weight and design, almost any vehicle can tow it. The honeycomb base and dual fiberglass shell are strong enough to hold anything. The Adaptiv components come in packages that add weight. With the components, you should assume around 2,000 pounds fully loaded.

12. inTech RV Sol

• 16- 19 feet in length
• 2,590- 3,375 pounds dry weight
• 3 different floorplans
• $24,890- $35,000

When most people think of small travel trailers, luxury isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. The designers at inTech have changed that type of thinking. Their line of Sol trailers has combined luxury, unique style, and small size in new ways.

The first thing you notice is the shape of their trailers. The tilt-front shape adds space without sacrificing aerodynamics. In the Dawn model, the front panoramic windshield allows those at the dinette to enjoy the view. The Eclipse places the kitchen upfront. This gives plenty of natural light while preparing meals.

The luxury-style amenities, regardless of model, give a high-class feel to the RV. The kitchen area has stainless steel amenities that include a 3.7 cubic foot refrigerator. The flooring is a woven vinyl that is a perfect combination of style and resilience to dirt and stains.

The dinettes in both models fold out into the bed in these coaches. In the Dawn, the measurements are 48 x 80. The Eclipse is 55 x 80. When you compare these to residential beds, you get the length of a queen.

The wet baths are very large in both models. Whichever model you choose, you will receive a real porcelain toilet. inTech made sure to give you plenty of room to take a standing shower and not feel claustrophobic. Their wet baths are the largest in their class.

13. Hymer Touring GT

• 18.11 feet in length
• 2,500 pounds dry weight
• 1 American floorplan, 11 German floorplans

The appeal of European design has become a new trend in the United State in recent years. This has given consumers new form and function options. In the Class B motorhome category, European-based chassis have benefits never seen before.

Eriba RV decided to take this a step further. This past year, they decided to open a North American Division here in the United States. This German company introduced its Hymer Touring GT to America. While it may be new to the U.S., this coach dates back to the late 1950s.

The first unique feature of this coach is its expandable roof. Once opened, it gives almost a 6.4 feet height within the coach.

The current layout available in the United States has a king-size bed in the rear of the coach. This is unique since it’s truly rare for small travel trailers to have a permanent bed of this size. The front of the coach has a fold-down dinette that can accommodate an additional sleeper.

The cabinetry follows European style with its rounded fronts. This gives additional inches to each storage space. The faucet folds down into the sink and has a cover that folds on top of it. The two-burner gas stove also has a cover. This allows the added counter space for meal prep.

The bathroom is full-featured. It comes with a cassette toilet that has it’s own external bay for easy draining. The shower is big enough to clean up without banging your arms against the walls.

Another unique feature is their window and door screens. For the door, there is a hidden screen that pulls out from the side. Pull-down sunscreens and privacy shades act as screens as well. When you open the windows, the hatches act as hard-shell awnings to prevent rain and other weather from coming into the coach.

3. Airstream Basecamp

Airstream has earned its place as an iconic national symbol of the road-trip life.  But what if an adventurer wanted to take their wheeled home off the paved path? The Basecamp travel trailer is Airstream’s answer to adventure for those who have smaller tow vehicles and backroad wanderlust. 

Airstream’s shift away from larger campers earned awards over the years and even an ongoing partnership with REI (which shows who their target audience actually is). While still pricier than comparable trailers, the Basecamp offers a more accessible entry point into the Airstream experience compared to the brand’s larger “silver bullets.” This is thanks to its smaller size and lighter base weight. But never fear: it still comes decked out with the iconic, on-brand silver aluminum siding that makes Airstream easily identifiable anywhere in the country.

What to Consider When Buying a Small or Compact Trailer

Before making a purchase, it’s important to consider these campers and RVs in person and thoroughly research each model to ensure it meets your specific personal requirements. For example, where do you like to camp? If you are a person who spends more time in a campground, an option like the Scamp with lower clearance and smaller tanks is a great bet. However, if you prefer to boondock and take your trailer off-roading, you’ll want more clearance and larger tanks so you can remain out longer. In this instance, a burlier option like the nuCamp TAB may be a better choice.

However, most RVs under 20 feet long have a number of storage solutions larger RVs don’t have, likely out of necessity.  Depending on how often you plan on using your RV and what you plan on using it for, you may be on the hunt for something with very specific storage solutions.

However, if you want a compact RV to camp in on the weekends , this may not be a big concern.  If you already know you want to bring along kayaks or bicycles and enough luggage for a long-term stay, storage should be a top priority. You’ll find some compact options that allow you to bring recreational toys along, but it may take more time and effort compared to those with less specific storage needs. 

Number Of Beds

It’s unlikely your RV under 20 feet long has more than one bed. You may find a layout that has two, but the chances of fitting more than one sleeping arrangement inside a compact RV are rare. You may also want to look for an RV equipped for four-season use, completely maximizing your investment!  However, it’s important to note not all boondock features are included as standard in the majority of RVs on the market today. You may have to request these features or keep an eye out for rigs that are particularly built for dry camping. Note that these types of RVs may also cost more. 

Towable Rig Or Not

If you’re shopping for an RV under 20 feet long, chances are you’re looking at either a travel trailer or a Class B camper van , since most other options are over twenty feet long and will be too large. It’s worth mentioning these two options are very different from one another in a number of ways.  The main and most obvious difference when it comes to choosing between a travel trailer or a Class B is whether or not you want to tow or drive your RV.

Travel trailers must be towed by a tow vehicle, such as a truck or SUV, while the Class B is essentially an oversized van.  There are pros and cons to both options, but you may want to consider which one you are more comfortable with. Overall, Class B RVs are easier to drive and set up, though they’re much more expensive compared to the average travel trailer. 

In addition, travel trailers tend to have more floorplans and layouts compared to Class B vans, though camper vans are getting more unique by the day! However, given the additional cost, you may want to consider a travel trailer, especially if you already have an adequate tow vehicle at home. 

Speaking of additional cost, your budget should be a top consideration when shopping for an RV that’s under 20 feet long. As I’ve already mentioned, choosing a travel trailer over a Class B will save you money.  However, you need to consider the fact you’ll need a tow vehicle capable of towing your travel trailer, while a camper van is ready to go off the lot. You should also consider your overall needs and comfort when it comes to towing, as it’s not for everyone. 

To give you a ballpark figure, many compact travel trailers start as low as $20K, while the majority of Class B camper vans start over $100k. Even if you need to purchase a vehicle to tow your brand-new travel trailer, you’ll likely still end up paying less compared to the average Class B! 

It’s also necessary to remain realistic about how much you want to spend, as many RV manufacturers have additional features not included in the initial purchase price. If you want to add anything, you are more than welcome to, but you need to understand that the additional cost will be there.

This iconic aluminum travel trailer is notorious for being one of the smallest single-axle travel trailers on the market today offered by Airstream.  Available in four different lengths and floor plans, the Bambi has 2 options under 20 feet long, and one that’s just over 20 feet. Although every layout is compact, the only two measuring under 20′ are the 16RB and 16RB, and they are both functional and full of classic Airstream style . 

This isn’t to say Airstream only focuses on aesthetics, as all of its rigs are highly prized for their resale value and durability, often lasting generation after generation. So, with an initial purchase price of $60k, the Bambi may be pricey, but I trust it to keep going for many adventures in the future. The Bambi Airstream incorporates a number of luxurious touches in a comfortable and homey environment, making this compact travel trailer ideal for just about anyone.

The Bambi is a small trailer for full-time RVing and would be best suited to only one or maybe two people as it may otherwise feel cramped.  There’s everything I need inside the Bambi, including a well-appointed kitchen, a full bathroom, a dining room, and a bedroom. All of these features can be found in any length of Bambi, whether it be a 16, 19, or 20-foot-long layout.

Plus, every Bambi floorplan is under 5,000 pounds, making them easily towable by the average car, which is a huge bonus as it means I don’t have the added expense of a new pickup to haul the trailer around! Another additional perk of purchasing an Airstream is the fact their durable aluminum bodies are easy to maintain and care for, year after year. The only drawback I feel is the price, although this is to be expected from an Airstream-branded RV!

Best On A Budget: Jayco Jay Feather Micro

Starting at a budget-friendly $36k, the Jayco Jay Feather Micro is a fantastic travel trailer for adventurers looking to begin their RV journey. The Jay Feather Micro has 4 floorplans, however, only the 166FBS travel trailer is under 20 feet long. It may be possible to find more variety with different trailers and brands, but the 166FBS is a fantastic layout that’s simple and great for beginners.

At 19′ 7″ long, the 166FBS is compact but still manages to pack everything an RVer could need or want on vacation. The floor space in this travel trailer is impressive, and there’s abundant room to explore the kitchen, rear bathroom with shower, jack-knife sofa, and comfortable bed area. The interior design doesn’t quite match that of Airstream trailers, however, some personal touches will help liven everything up considerably.

I enjoy exploring the great outdoors at any time of the year, come rain or shine! Therefore, I need an RV able to tackle rollercoaster weather and cold temperatures in the depths of winter. Jayco has considered this with the Jay Feather Micro, and that’s why it has Climate Shield ultimate weather protection tested from 0-100° F. I trust this rig to handle a multitude of weather conditions, and I love that I can stay cozy and safe inside while the weather is stormy outside.

I used to wonder what to expect from a Jayco RV, especially given their often low price points. For the most part, though, Jayco rigs are very well-built, especially when it comes to their foundation and detailed hardwood cabinetry. In fact, the interior design of the Jay Feather Micro is more comfortable than many might expect, especially since it’s a fraction of the Airstream Bambi.

My only critique of this trailer is that it may not perform great when boondocking or heading off-grid for a few days. It’s possible to add a solar package, but this is an additional non-standard feature that will add an extra amount to the final price. For an easy travel trailer to hitch up and take on the road for a quick weekend getaway in the summertime, the Jayco Jay Feather Micro may be the best match!

Leave it to Airstream to craft our most unique RV under 20 feet long! Available in a 16-foot-long rig or just over a 20-foot-long rig, the Airstream Basecamp is one of the most unique and eye-catching travel trailers on the market today.  The first thing that draws me to the Basecamp is the panoramic window views on the front of its uniquely shaped aluminum frame .

Depending on the floorplan, the kitchen is typically located at the front of the RV. This is a location I love since it creates the best seat in the house while I cook or make my morning coffee. Even though the Basecamp is on the smaller side of RVs, there’s still a functional bathroom space on each floorplan. The bathroom isn’t as spacious or luxurious as with bigger rigs, but at least Airstream has managed to incorporate a bathroom into such a compact space.

I also enjoy the innovative design of the rear of this trailer, as it converts from a comfortable lounge area into a full-size bed, providing ample space to sleep at night and relax during the day. O pting for the larger model means it’s possible to sleep up to four people inside the RV, instead of just two people in the smaller trailer. However, I advocate this rig for the adventurous couple, given the raised chassis and reinforced windows and exterior walls. This means I can travel wherever I like, no matter how unconventional the roads may be! 

In terms of storage, the Basecamp doesn’t disappoint. There are expansive cargo holds above my head, storage cupboards underneath the seats, plenty of kitchen storage, and ample floor space for items such as kayaks during travel. The catch of the Airstream has to be the price. Although it’s a more affordable option compared to the Bambi, it’s still expensive for a 16′ rig with an extremely small bathroom and sleeping capacity for two.

Best For Boondocking: Winnebago Hike 100

Winnebago is always reinventing their RVs, and the Hike 100 is no exception. Only available in a 15′ 11″ long rig, this travel trailer is a great choice for those looking to hit the road in a compact but capable RV under 20 feet.  Starting at $46k, this RV is still a considerable investment for such a small rig, however, the Hike 100 has a vast array of impressive features for off-grid travel and boondocking. 

There are 5 floorplans with the Winnebago Hike 100, and each of them has a creative layout, making this a trailer that’s well-suited to any kind of traveler. Some floorplans feature a rear loft sleeping area, while others have a Murphy bed, wet bath, and an exterior kitchen. The Hike may not be the answer for large families, however, if the aim is to find a compact trailer able to sleep 4 – look no further!

This Winnebago rig is one of the smaller RVs on our list, and although for some it might be too compact, solo, couple, or small groups of avid RVers will love every minute spent inside this trailer. There’s ample storage for belongings, and exterior features to make living in a small space considerably easier. On the Hike 100, there’s a roof rack with an attached roof ladder, a rear hitch receiver to install a kayak rack or bike rack, and two awnings.

Having two awnings is a great benefit for exploring the country in summer, as it means there’s more than one shaded area. There’s one awning on the side of the trailer, and one at the rear with bat wing shades, providing increased overall privacy, ideal for nights spent at the campground.  The chassis of this particular RV is raised, delivering more room to hit the road, even when heading down rocky tracks.

Plus, solar is included in the purchase price, enough to power this tiny rig, as well as sealed and insulated tanks, allowing me to camp in any season without any hassle. This RV may be small, but it has a lot to offer!

Best For Full Timing: Lance 960 Travel Trailer

If I decided to retire my 1976 travel trailer, I would likely upgrade to the Lance 960 . No, it isn’t the biggest trailer on the market, but instead, it’s an RV under 20 feet with a lot to offer for full-timers looking for a compact RV solution. There are 9 different lengths and layouts of the Lance Trailer, but the 960 is 19′ long, has the ability to comfortably sleep 3, and boasts a very functional interior design.

Compared to the Winnebago Hike 100, the Lance is incredibly spacious. It has a large rear bed, a well-equipped kitchen with plenty of counter space, a decent-sized fridge, and a small corner bathroom with a foot-pedal toilet. I like that Lance provides 3 interior colors as it means the Lance is somewhat personalizable and matched with the sleek exterior, this is a good-looking truck camper that packs a punch!

For me, it’s the small details that truly signify when an RV manufacturer understands its customers, and I believe this to be true with the Lance 960. It has electric remote control camper jacks to make life a lot easier when I’ve reached my destination, and the keyed-alike radius entry and storage doors mean easy loading and off-loading. For ultimate convenience, the Lance has keyless entry. This is a fantastic safety point and also ensures I can gain access to my camper quickly and easily.

For increased privacy and extra protection against bugs, there are Euro window treatments with a combo screen and shade.  The main drawback of purchasing a Lance travel trailer, like most truck campers is the price point. The average travel trailer from this particular company starts anywhere from $40 to $60k, depending on the length. However, these travel trailers are extremely well-built and lightweight enough to be towed by the average pickup truck, so it’s worth keeping them in the running.

Best Travel Trailer: Forest River r-pod

There’s a reason I see the Forest River r-pod at just about every campground I visit. They are extremely lightweight, come in a variety of floor plans, and have a unique shape that’s both aerodynamic and appealing. In terms of layouts available that are either 20 feet or under in length, the r-pod has 4 options.  Even the smallest r-pod, coming in at 15′ long has almost everything I need for a successful time camping. 

Inside, there’s a humble kitchen space, queen-size convertible bed, fireplace, TV, wardrobe, and ample storage compartments. The only thing missing is a bathroom! It may seem crazy for a trailer not to have a bathroom, but the r-pod is very compact, and it would be a struggle to fit either a dry or wet bath inside, while still having access to a range of appliances. 

Upgrading to a slightly larger model would result in a far more user-friendly space with a bathroom included, but this goes hand in hand with a bigger rig and a higher price tag. As I like boondocking, the lack of a bathroom would be an issue for me, however, those primarily staying at a campground may not be concerned with not having a bathroom to use as there are facilities at RV parks.

There’s very little working against this rig, and Forest River is a name I have recognized and trusted for a number of years. The brand isn’t everyone’s number-one choice, so it’s worth exploring in-depth reviews if you’re on the fence and have some doubts about Forest River .

Best Class B RV: Winnebago Revel

J ust barely qualifying, is the Winnebago Revel, measuring just under 20 feet at 19′ 7″. This Class B RV is extremely popular for a number of reasons, especially for those looking to explore off-grid. The Revel may have an astonishing price tag, but it’s built on a reliable diesel-powered Mercedes-Benz chassis, has great fuel efficiency, and is easy to drive . Mercedes-Benz incorporates a number of safety features into its rigs, and Winnebago makes sure to maximize these safety features on the Revel.

Some of these include backup cameras, lane assist, and more, which gives me ultimate peace of mind on the road that I’m capable of handling various terrains and 4×4 conditions.  This gives me total confidence while traveling over rough terrain or in inclement weather, which isn’t something that can be said for many travel trailers. 

While the interior design is nothing special, this Class B RV is easy to clean and maintain, made of long-lasting materials. Plus, the layout is where the Revel really shines. There’s a large power lift bed in the rear of the van, allowing me to store things underneath, and a fridge in the kitchen which can be accessed from both inside and outside the rig. 

Everything is also easy to access from the interior of this camper van, which is a huge convenience for those who are experienced in RVing and have been frustrated by other sorts of setups in the past. It’s also easy to boondock in the Revel, as it’s supported with huge batteries, a 1,000W inverter, and sizeable holding tanks. 

The catch, like most Class B RVs, is the price. Starting at $210k, there’s no secret that Revel is a big investment. While it’s well-equipped and there’s little need for optional extras, the price makes this rig only suitable for large budgets.

Most Luxurious: Airstream Interstate 19

While Airstream has given us a number of other rigs on this list, the Airstream Interstate 19 is a fantastic choice for those looking for a luxurious camper van . The Bambi and the Basecamp are both equally stunning and luxurious, but the Interstate 19 is a Class B RV with a lot to offer too. With prices kicking off at $200k, this is a camper that needs a lot of consideration, as it costs so much!

It’s easy to see where this price has come from, with just one look at the Airstream Interstate 19. Along with having a branded household name, the Interstate 19 is the perfect size for parking on a driveway, navigating tight tracks, and rocking up at the campground. It’s a breeze to drive and park and is available with 3 unique color options, including a Tommy Bahama special edition for style-seekers.

There’s only one floorplan with the Interstate 19 which isn’t the range of choice I like to see with camper vans, however, this layout truly boasts luxury and convenience that sleeps 2 and seats 4. The power sofa to the rear of the wagon becomes the bed at night, which creates the illusion of a very spacious rig during the day. Despite it being a wet bath, the bathroom is also impressive, with a shower, toilet, and sink all in one space.

While the kitchen is fairly compact, it has an extended countertop I can tuck away when it’s not needed and utilize when I’m prepping a big meal for my partner and friends.  Like most camper vans, the Airstream Interstate 19 is a large investment, however, it’s never a bad decision to opt for a long-lasting, Airstream RV!

Best Fiberglass RV: Escape Trailer Escape 19

The Escape 19, meaning it’s 19 feet long, is another travel trailer I will consider upgrading to in the future. Starting at $39k, the Escape line of travel trailers are all built from one continuous fiberglass piece. This essentially means I won’t have to worry too much about leaks or water damage as my rig ages. Cutting down on RV maintenance is a goal for me, the more years I spend on the road, so this fiberglass rig is a great option for me to go for.

Not only does the fiberglass construction add resale value to the RV, but it also means the trailer will last for many years and adventures to come. The Escape also comes in a smaller model, for those wanting a more compact rig, and considering they are made from fiberglass, the Escape travel trailer is extremely lightweight and easy to tow.  This RV has everything I need inside, including a wet bath, full kitchen, spacious bed, and dining area.

The cabinetry is light wood and modern, though the Escape brand offers the unique opportunity to customize the RV interior with either a contemporary, maple, or oak finish.  While it may take some time to manufacture and the end price might be more than $36k with additional features and aesthetics, it’s possible to truly make any Escape travel trailer a cozy home on wheels.

Escape is known for creating customizable rigs, but there are unbelievably, over 100 options for making an E19 trailer a personal RV. This includes different battery options, solar setups, cooking equipment, external features, various window options, and more. I love having this kind of freedom with RVs as I’m more likely to create something I’ll continue to use, enjoy, and love going forward.

Having such a vast array of options is exciting, but this may be off-putting for those who want to simply choose a rig and drive it away not long afterward. Either way, it’s hard to find a fiberglass RV with the kind of freedom and options the Escape 19 offers, especially for such an affordable price.

Four Season Ready: Starcraft RV Super Lite Maxx

The Starcraft RV Super Lite Maxx is a travel trailer fit to handle four-season travel with a TuffShell construction, impact-resistant galvanized steel wheel wells, enclosed and insulated underbelly, fully insulated roof, and rubber torsion axle with increased ground resistance adjustments. Traveling throughout the year requires a rig able to adapt to different climates and conditions, and that’s exactly why I love the Super Lite Maxx.

The smallest floorplan measures bang-on 20′ 0″, which is why we’ve brought this trailer onto our list. It’s a strong rig with small features that make all the difference, especially for full-timing. The friction hingle door allows me to exit and enter the rig without the door catching in the wind or slamming closed. There’s also easy-to-clean tongue and groove flooring and LED lighting which aids in creating a light and airy space to enjoy anytime, anywhere.

This travel trailer is designed to go wherever I want to take it, but I still need to stay connected, even when I’m parked in the trees. With this Starcraft RV trailer, I can connect to the internet and keep in touch with loved ones thanks to the handy 5G antenna. The smallest floorplan can still accommodate sleeping for 4, as there’s a jack-knife sofa and sizeable bed to the rear.

Like most RV brands, some may not want to opt for a Starcraft RV, since it’s arguably not as popular as other brands such as Forest River, Winnebago, or Jayco. For just over $32k, however, I think this trailer is well worth a close look for those wanting to experience the beauty throughout the year and be supported by a reliable trailer able to keep everything and everyone warm, dry, and happy on the road.

Best 4WD: Thor Talavera

With 2 stunning floorplans and a length of 19′ 8″, the Thor Talavera is one of the best RVs under 20 feet with incredible 4WD capability. Constructed on the Transit Traill chassis, the Talavera is the ultimate option for adventure-seekers who want to be backed by a powerful, and durable rig that’s ready to hit the mountains. The 4WD capability allows me to drive wherever I want to go, without having to worry about getting stuck or struggling on tough terrain.

This is the freedom I love and desire for all of my RVing trips going forward. This is a compact rig that feels able to conquer the world, all on a wheelbase under 20′ long. The integrated marker lamps, tough splash guards, and Goodyear all-terrain tires are just some of the features that put the Talavera in a league of its own. 

I love that safety is a top priority for Thor, and this is shown in the Talavera through the AWD system, blind spot assist, tilted audio controls, and leather steering wheel. There’s even a camera equipped with reverse and side-sensing ability for ease of driving. Although the exterior and underneath of the Thor Talavera are impressive, the interior is just as stunning.

The vinyl flooring throughout the Class C RV is quick and easy to clean, while the large opening side windows, well-equipped kitchen, and functional wet bath all work seamlessly to create a successful camping experience for all. There are only 2 floorplans to choose from, but since both are under 20 feet long and are full of convenient features, this is good news for compact RV seekers.

There’s a significant price jump between the floorplans, which is a little surprising since they are both quite similar. Having a couple of options is better than only one layout, but it would be nice to see a bit more variation from Thor in the future.

But an industry trend driven by — who else? — millennials is seeing recreational-vehicle profiles getting "smaller, sleeker with more technology built in," Recreational Vehicle Industry Association spokesman Kevin Broom told The Spokesman-Review . Cheapism has rounded up a few of these tiny RVs that are turning heads, at a number of different prices, from more affordable trailers that cost less than $15,000 to luxury motorhomes that ring up at a staggering $500,000. 

Polydrop Trailer

A more angular take on the ubiquitous teardrop trailer profile, the Polydrop looks like a tiny spaceship, especially with its gull-wing doors raised. At just over 12 feet long, with a double layer of insulated wood and aluminum skin, it's designed to be cozy, even in cold weather.

Like other trailers with similar profiles, the Polydrop includes a cabin with sleeping space and storage, and the camper's back opens up to a minimalist, mod-looking cooking space that includes a cabinet for electronic components and two storage drawers — no cooktop, sink, or refrigeration here. Polydrops start at $12,500.

inTech RV Flyer Chase

This Indiana company offers a number of RV models considered tiny by today's standards. The Flyer Chase is one of the more versatile options with plenty of available add-ons and mods. At 7 feet, 5 inches long and 3 feet, 9 inches high, it sleeps two, but can accommodate up to three more people with an add-on tent feature.

RVers who really like to get off the beaten path can do so with the Chase's off-road tires, all-aluminum, fully welded cage frame, and lift kit. Larger versions of the Flyer — the Pursue and Explore — come with slide-out kitchens and tip-outs for extra sleeping space. New models of this trailer start at a little above $13,000.

This pop-top, "original A-frame" camper was conceived of in the early 1970s. It now comes in 10 versions with differing features. These include exterior options such as an outdoor shower, baggage doors, LED running lights, exterior outlets, off-road axle, outside grill, and more. Interior options include a shower, toilet, and front and/or rear beds.

Some models include a refrigerator, microwave, and stove-top. The company also makes a small-footprint, teardrop-like RV camper called the Ascape with solar panel and flat-screen TV options. Plan to drop at least $29,000 for the latest Ascape models, depending on size and features.

Aero Teardrop Steel

Portland, Oregon-based Aero offers a number of customizable tiny RV models, but the 5-by-10-foot Steel is its most compact they currently offer. Like many teardrop-style trailers, the Steel features a sleeping cabin and galley that can be configured several ways. It also comes with a Bluetooth stereo system, hardwood cabinetry, LED lighting, and underfloor storage.

Custom options such as exterior finish, wheel type, tongue storage, and awning, as well as interior add-ons such as TV/DVD player and stainless steel countertops increase the price. Aero has a super-intuitive trailer-building feature on its website that lets customers know exactly how much each feature costs. Models start at $18,850.

Scamp Trailer

Scamp has been making trailers since the 1970s, and is still going strong . The camper's original aerodynamic profile remains on the modern standard and deluxe models, available in 13- and 16-foot trailer versions, as well as a 19-foot fifth-wheel version. This latter option comes with oak or birch hardwoods, a larger bath area, more storage, and space to accommodate a larger refrigerator.

With a convertible dinette and queen-bed loft area, the super-sized Scamp can sleep five to six. Expect to spend around $19,900 for the smallest version and between $24,000 and $36,000 for larger models.

T2RV Dinky Dub Sleeper

If you're a fan of the VW Bus, you'll love the Dinky Sleeper's design, which looks a lot like the classic vehicle, only in towable form. This tiny RV comes with or without an outdoor kitchenette, and both models include a custom queen mattress and options such as privacy window shutters, roof rack, AC/heat, portable cooler, indoor curtain track, and pop-up top with weather curtains.

For the RV owner who likes a nod to vintage styling combined with Amish craftsmanship, there's this line of tiny towables. Unlike most other teardrops that have a kitchen accessible from outside, nüCamp's TAB models includes it inside, and there are even floor plans that include a wet bath.

Taxa Outdoors Cricket

With a dry weight of just over 1,700 pounds and a design inspired by NASA, the easily towable Cricket has a ton of features that make this tiny RV versatile. Once parked, campers can open a pop-up roof for added ventilation and space. It also comes with a built-in, birch plywood kitchen, under-bed storage, and a bed that can be converted into seating.

Built with "tough luxury in mind," this tiny RV includes a bamboo interior, a pullout stainless steel kitchen that includes a chopping board, prep deck and pantry access, as well as an electric Dometic cooler that has both refrigeration and freezing compartments, and a pop-up roof that provides extra headroom. 

Opus OP 15' Hybrid Caravan: The View Inside

The OP's interior includes a leatherette dining area, shower/toilet combo with hot water availability, a king size bed and twin bunks, and plenty of available storage via a wardrobe and other storage areas. The Class B — commonly called van campers — is another category that lends itself well to smaller footprint RVs, and Winnebago's Revel is a popular, award-winning choice in this genre. It's the first off-road ready camper to be mass-produced and sold in the U.S. in decades, and Outside magazine called it a "breakthrough camper van." It includes a power-lift bed with under-bed storage, an all-in-one gear closet and wet bath, and swivel cab seats, as well as a kitchen with single-burner induction cooktop, stowable countertop extension, and 2.5 cubic foot fridge.

The two floorplans combine sleeping areas, galley kitchens, and dining areas.

Winnebago Boldt: The View Inside

Winnebago claims it's the "most comfortable B-van ever created" and, with a starting price of $245,587, it should be. For that amount of money, travelers also get Corian countertops, an AI voice interface system, integrated Wi-Fi, a 24-inch LED TV and sound system, and enough extra insulation to make it four-season road-worthy.
