Chasing the Blues: A Comprehensive Guide to Blue Slag (What Is It and Where To Find It)

by Rock Seeker October 25, 2022, 3:15 pm updated February 14, 2024, 8:07 pm

All About Blue Slag

Blue slag is a man-made rock created as a by-product of iron smelting. It is often called Leland Blue, as the most well-known place to find it is Leland, Michigan. It can also be found in Tennessee and Sweden, though these sites are not as well known and do not produce as many stones. Blue slag is most often a robin’s egg blue, but I’ve seen greenish and purplish stones.

Blue slag is popular because of its aesthetic beauty and because it is a very unique and relatively rare type of rock. The type of iron smelting that produced blue slag was phased out in the late 19th century, so little to no blue slag is being created these days.

However, some glass companies are creating special slag glass varieties that look similar to true blue slag. Many rockhounds, myself included, would instead prefer to scour the shores of Lake Michigan to find original blue slag in the rough.

Read on to learn more about blue slag, including where you can find it for yourself.

What is Blue Slag?

Blue slag originates as various minerals present in iron ore. It is separated from the iron ore during the smelting process, which creates a glassy stone. As blue slag was created in furnaces, it is often pitted with air bubbles created when the molten slag was cooling after being separated from the purified iron ore.

Besides this pitting, however, blue slag is often worn smooth by water. It was common for mining companies to dump the slag into various bodies of water, as it was considered waste.

Blue slag is a relatively soft stone, making it difficult to work with. Its softness also means that it is often found in small pieces despite the enormous quantities produced by old-fashioned iron smelting processes. Even these small pieces are often fractured.

How Is Blue Slag Formed?

The iron smelting process creates many by-products, including blue slag. Blue slag starts out as blue glass impurities within iron ore. The iron ore mined in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan which was processed in the town of Leland was known for having such impurities.

The Leland Lake Superior Iron Company removed these impurities by smelting, which means heating the iron to incredibly hot temperatures that cause the impurities to separate from the molten iron. While blue glass is responsible for the bluish color of blue slag, other impurities also melted into the blue glass during the smelting process. This is why the color of blue slag can vary from blue to green to purple.

leland blue tour

When the slag had cooled, it was discarded in favor of the valuable iron ore. The Leland Lake Superior Iron Company originally piled up the blue slag on their property. When they went bankrupt in 1885, they dumped the blue slag into Lake Michigan.

The lesser-known blue slag found in Tennessee and Sweden was also created as a by-product of the iron smelting process.

Where Can Blue Slag Be Found?

Unsurprisingly, the town of Leland is the most popular destination in Michigan for blue slag hunters. This is where the best-known variety, Leland Blue, can be found . It can also be found in much smaller quantities in Tennessee and Sweden, but of course, these cannot be considered “Leland Blue” slag.

Leland is a small town nestled between the picturesque shores of Lake Michigan and Lake Leelanau. Known for its idyllic location on the Leelanau Peninsula, this historic destination attracts a plethora of visitors during the summer months. Visitors can take in the sights and sounds of people strolling along the sandy beaches in search of Leland blue slag as well as perusing the quaint shops that dot the area.

Beyond The Lower Peninsula

While the lower peninsula of Michigan is renowned for its blue slag deposits, it’s important to note that this phenomenon is not confined to this area alone. The upper Peninsula of Michigan also boasts significant slag finds, underscoring the extensive iron smelting history in the region. This area, with its rich deposits of iron ore, was a hub of smelting activity, contributing to the industrial growth of the region and the nation.

Beyond Michigan, the shores of the other Great Lakes harbor these historical remnants as well. Lake Superior, Lake Huron, Lake Erie, and Lake Ontario were pivotal in the transportation and processing of iron ore, facilitating the establishment of smelters in their vicinity. The strategic locations of these lakes allowed for the efficient movement of raw materials and finished products, making them integral to the smelting industry.

Finding blue slag involves exploring areas known for historic smelting operations. These locations often include old industrial sites, abandoned smelter facilities, and areas near mines. Enthusiasts and collectors frequent these sites, searching for pieces of slag that not only serve as beautiful specimens but also as artifacts that tell the story of a bygone industrial age.

In addition to Michigan and its surroundings, other regions in the United States and around the world where iron smelting was historically significant may also yield blue slag, such as Tennessee. Countries with a rich history of iron production, such as the United Kingdom, Germany, and Sweden, among others, are potential sites for finding slag deposits as well.

For those interested in locating blue slag, it’s advisable to research historical industrial sites, consult with local historical societies, and connect with other collectors and enthusiasts. Safety should be a priority when exploring these areas, as old industrial sites can be hazardous. Moreover, respecting private property and adhering to local regulations is crucial when searching for slag.

Is More Blue Slag Being Produced?

Iron smelting processes have come a long way since the 19th century. Much less slag is produced during the smelting process. Also, iron mining and processing companies generally do not discard the slag they produce in publicly accessible areas.

Modern environmental regulations prevent these companies from simply dumping slag into bodies of water as the Leland Lake Superior Iron Company did in the late 19th century. While this is undoubtedly good for the environment, it also means that rockhounds will not be able to get their hands on freshly made blue slag.

Artificial Blue Slag

The popularity of blue slag from iron smelting operations has led some glassmakers to create varieties of glass that look similar to blue slag. As blue slag is not considered to be particularly valuable, these glassmakers do not attempt to pass off their slag glass as authentic blue slag.

Instead, these glassmakers will use blue-colored slag glass to create a variety of items, including jewelry and figurines. Artificial blue slag glass is easier to work with than genuine blue slag, allowing it to be used for intricate designs that would be impossible with Leland Blue.

Blue Slag is an Important Part of Northern Michigan’s Culture

The famous Leland Blue slag is an important part of the eclectic culture of northern Michigan. There are many rockhounds in the Lower Peninsula who spend hours combing the shores of Lake Michigan for blue slag. There are also quite a few artisanal jewelry designers who create necklaces, bracelets, and other items of jewelry using the iconic blue slag material.

Not only does blue slag play an important part in the lives of many residents of the Lower Peninsula, it is also historically important. The industrial operations that were common in the Lower Peninsula are now long gone, but many of the current residents are descendants of those who moved to northern Michigan in search of the economic opportunities that would give themselves and their families better lives.

Hunting for Blue Slag in Northern Michigan

leland blue tour

If you plan on going to northern Michigan to hunt for blue slag, you’re best off focusing on the shores of Lake Michigan near Leland. Most rockhounds who search for blue slag do so by simply walking the beach around the waterline with their eyes on the ground.

Blue slag is easy to spot due to its vibrant color. However, it has become increasingly rare due to its popularity and due to the limited quantities that are accessible.

Most rockhounds who go to the Lower Peninsula to look for blue slag do so in the summer, as the winters in this neck of the woods are very cold. However, Leland is a popular summer tourist destination, and many of these tourists are rockhounds on the lookout for blue slag. This means that you will face stiff competition if you go looking for blue slag in the summer.

Local rockhounds often look for blue slag during the winter , when there are fewer people on the beaches. Even if most of the easily accessible blue slag has been picked up during the summer tourist season, more will have washed up by the time winter rolls around. If you can stand the cold, this is the best time to hunt for blue slag.

Blue Slag Jewelry

Blue slag jewelry has become very popular in recent years. In the past, it was only available at small shops in northern Michigan. However, the increased popularity of sites like Etsy and eBay amongst artisanal jewelers means that blue slag jewelry can be purchased from anywhere.

If you’re planning on getting some blue slag jewelry, there are some things that you should keep in mind. First of all, blue slag jewelry often features uncut stones. The softness of blue slag means that it is nearly impossible to cut without fracturing it. Also, not all blue slag jewelry will have the vibrant robins-egg blue color that is often associated with this stone. The stones used in blue slag jewelry often feature varying shades of blue along with purple, grey, and green hues.

Interesting Facts About Blue Slag (FAQ)

Leland Blue’s alternative rock ‘runs deep,’ powers debut album

  • by John Sinkevics
  • April 27, 2019

This week’s edition of Local Spins on WYCE showcased the Grand Rapids band in-studio, plus debuted new music from Joe Hertler, The Accidentals, Deepfall, Katy Needs a Life and Mark Lavengood.

As the boys in Leland Blue put it, the musical origin of this band “runs pretty deep.”

That’s because the band’s two brothers, guitarist-singer Benjamin Robertson and drummer Connor Robertson, and their cousin, bassist Satchel Robertson, started playing together when they were just 8 or 9 years old, inspired by dads who were talented musicians themselves.

Now, the rock band – which also features keyboard player Bradley Sinclair – has released its self-titled debut album with a release show taking place Friday (May 3) at The Pyramid Scheme in Grand Rapids.

“We just like to make music together and wherever that takes us is kind of our direction,” said Benjamin Robertson.

“We’re not intentionally trying to put ourselves in any direction. We all have a lot of different influences and we all have pretty eclectic tastes.”

On Friday, the band made its Local Spins on WYCE debut, performing two songs – “Cold Comfort” and “Grandiose” – on the air. Watch the video for “Grandiose” here and check out the podcast below.

For its first album, which took about two years to complete, the band “chose songs that best represented our first musical endeavor,” Benjamin Robertson said.

Those songs lean toward alternative, pop-hued rock with catchy melodies and fetching guitar leads.

The group already is talking about “experimenting with different sounds” for future songs and recording projects, with an Ann Arbor performance coming up on May 25 and an East Coast tour in mid-June.

Friday’s album-release show at The Pyramid Scheme will also feature sets by Modern Adventures, Often Home and Dawning. Doors open at 7 p.m. May 3 for the all-ages show. Tickets are $10 advance, $12 day of show. Get details online at pyramidschemebar.com.

The April 26 episode of Local Spins on WYCE also featured the on-air debut of new tracks by The Accidentals (from the Traverse City band’s new live album), Joe Hertler & The Rainbow Seekers, Katy Needs a Life, Deepfall and Mark Lavengood , along with songs by Brother Elsey, The Honeytones, The Concussions, The Crane Wives and Escaping Pavement . Leland Blue

Made up of brothers Connor, Ben, and their cousin Satchel, Leland Blue was founded young, at middle school talent shows and in family rooms in Midland, Michigan. With musicians for parents and growing up on the sounds of everything from Led Zeppelin to Stevie Wonder, the twenty-somethings can’t imagine a different future for themselves. And it only seemed right to name their band after their roots, a stone they collected as kids off the coast of the Great Lakes.

Now, they’re embodying the idols they grew up with. Lying between verses of their songs you can hear The Smiths, you can feel The Cars, and you’re confident they listened to Disco, RnB, and Rock— But there’s also a genre present no one can seem to put their finger on, and that’s where Leland Blue turns heads.

With a continuously growing fanbase, the boys found early encouragement when they released their first single in 2017, “Sofia,” which has amassed over 2 million streams. After two EPs that continued to develop with every release, the group started to gather steam by playing a variety of shows across Michigan.

Now based in Grand Rapids, Leland Blue is looking forward to continuing to do what they love best. While continuing to develop as songwriters and musicians as they look to experiment with new sounds and musical ideas, Leland Blue hopes to capture the experience of being human in order to bring people together.

How to look for Leland Blue stone, a Michigan rock hunting treasure

In recent years, Leland Blue — the enchanting Michigan beach stone that actually is not a stone at all — has become one of the Great Lakes’ most sought-after rock-hunting riches.

The byproduct of blast-furnace iron smelting that occurred in Leland more than 100 years ago, Leland Blue comes in a range of almost otherworldly shades as well as sizes that run from tiny pebbles to chunks as big as softballs. Due to the short timeframe in which it was made, Leland Blue is also limited in supply, which only has increased its coveted status.

Cody Wiedenbein, founder of Michigan Rockhounds , is an expert on all things Leland Blue, including how exactly to find it. Through his Michigan Rockhounds site, social media groups and presentations each year, Wiedenbein has helped many hopeful rock hunters track down their first Leland Blue, and was willing to share some of his biggest tips. Read on for his suggestions, and find the full Leland Blue backstory here .

RELATED: Leland Blue stone: What is this beach treasure everyone is looking for Up North?

Location is everything. Leland Blue is an industrial waste known as slag that resulted when molten products in the Leland Lake Superior Iron Company’s furnaces were quickly cooled, creating a glass-like solid in much the same way that the volcanic glass called obsidian is made. Because of its specific origin, Leland Blue is typically not found anywhere but along the shorelines flanking the spot where those furnaces were located: at the mouth of the Leland River, where historic Fishtown is now found. Public access to the shoreline where you can find Leland Blue is at Van’s Beach and North Beach in Leland; the beaches beyond those places are tough to reach and largely on private land, Wiedenbein says.

Know Leland Blue’s full range of colors. The stone gets its namesake hue from the chemical alchemy that occurred inside those historic iron-smelting furnaces — but the resulting slag wasn’t limited to just one shade. Leland Blue can occur in a wide range of tones including robin’s egg blue, turquoise and green, and even includes some purple varieties that are often confused for amethyst.

Know how to properly identify the stone . All that natural variation can make Leland Blue tough to identify, but Wiedenbein says there are several signs to look for. Texturally it can look or feel similar to beach glass or ceramics; it can be coarse or somewhat smooth; it can be stony, fused with bits of limestone, or embedded with charcoal or rusty iron nodules. Leland Blues typically have a porousness due to gas pockets that formed when they were made, and can sometimes be marked by a wavy pattern or cristobalites, which are tiny white crystals that create a confetti-like pattern.

Leland Blue

A pile of Leland Blues shows the wide range of colors and textures that this industrial slag can appear. Photo by Cody Wiedenbein

Go beyond the first layer . Rockhounding locals know that the best time to find Leland Blue is as soon as the sun comes up, after another night of waves tumbling up new stones onto the shoreline. This means that on many mornings, most of the surface stones have already been picked over by the time visitors make their way to the beach. This is why Wiedenbein recommends getting into the water to look for stones — he personally loves to snorkel for them — or else gently brushing aside the top layer of stones on the beach to check the rocks just below: “What’s hiding under there is the stuff that people don’t see,” he says.

Look out for look-alikes . Many people mistakenly believe they’ve found Leland Blue when what they’re really discovered is chert — a sedimentary rock that can develop a thin blue-ish layer on its exterior as it weathers. But once the stone is cut or tumbled, its true color — a lackluster brown — is revealed. Compared to Leland Blue, chert is extremely hard and has a waxy feel with a lack of gas pockets, Wiedenbein says.

Check all the slag . Larger chunks of Leland Blue can appear completely different depending on which side you’re looking at, which is why Weidenbein recommends checking every piece you see. “Every piece of slag, no matter how disgusting it looks, how much it looks like limestone on one end, you always want to turn it over because on one side can be a beautiful glassy appearance,” he says.

Leland Blue Stone

You may have heard about or seen “Leland bluestones”, but do you know where they come from?

In the Glen Arbor Sun, Sandra Serra Bradshaw shares that Leland Bluestones were born over 100 years ago in the fires of the Leland Lake Superior Iron Company :

Between the years of 1870 to 1884, the Leland Lake Superior Iron Company operated an iron smelter north of the mouth of the river. They supplied the voracious furnace with ore from the Upper Peninsula. The charcoal they needed was made from local maple and beech timber that was produced in 14 beehive kilns that were kept near the smelting furnace. It produced up to an amazing 40 tons of iron per day. In 1884, the plant was sold to the Leland Lumber Co., which operated a sawmill on the site. Other sawmills and shingle mills operated in Leland during the years between 1885 through 1900. Back then Leland was a smog-filled industrial town, the main industry of which was anchored by the iron company. The smelting industry failed because of large overhead costs and the lack of a good harbor in Leland. Interestingly, the remains of the industry, including heaps of slag, were dumped into the harbor and today, that has resulted in something as a precious collectible for many. As raw ore was heated, the desired iron ore was separated from various natural impurities. When those impurities cooled, it resulted in a stone-like slag. Hence the Leland Blue Stones were born! The Leland Blue is a bit of a misleading title to this little man-made gem as it is the mix of blue glass with other chemicals — but this varying chemical medley can also cause the slag to appear in colors of purple, gray, or in shades of green. Today, people relish finding this slag material on the shores of Leland’s beaches. It is not only collectible as a stone, but also sought for as jewelry.

The Dazey Phase has announced the filmmaking team and cast for Léa Fae Caddigan’s debut feature “Blue Balls.” The film, which will shoot this summer, is based on a story by Meredith Metcalf who wrote the screenplay with Caddigan.

“Blue Balls” follows Emma, who, back at home in her small town, wants nothing more than a night of driving around and hanging out with her best friend, Mara. But when they meet Tom and Jack, Mara invites these two strangers back to their place to get to know each other better.

Popular on Variety

“’Blue Balls’ is relevant to anyone who has ever felt like romance, sex, dating, and life is a survivor’s sport,” said Caddigan. “I like stories that deliver deep points and hard truths with humor and action, and no one expects stunt sequences, car chases, and bloody vampires in a film that explores consent, coercion and personal agency. I couldn’t have asked for a better team than the folks at Dazey Phase, whose dedication to responsible storytelling and championing unique perspectives is unwavering.”

Jake Casey (“And Just Like That…”) and Danielle Benedict (“Hell is Empty”) will be producing through The Dazey Phase, the Syracuse-based production, sales and distribution company.

Barrio is repped by Kendall Kramer and Karli Doumanis at Zero Gravity Management. Hiscock is repped by Ben Levine, Brad Stokes and Vivek Kolli at LINK Entertainment. Alexander is repped by Aaron Brown at Avalon Management.

Blue Devil Quartet Punch Tickets to NCAA Outdoor Championships

  • Palma Simo registered the highest mark of the first round as he came through with a clutch throw of 69.39m (227-8 feet) on his third attempt to slot himself atop the 45-person field. • Simen Guttormsen advanced to the national meet after finishing third in the first round of the men's pole vault. He passed on the first three heights then cleared the next two on his third and first attempts, respectively, before bowing out with a final clearance of 5.42m (17-9.25 feet).
  • Ezra Mellinger locked down his spot at the NCAA Outdoor Championships via a solid showing in the men's long jump, flying out to 7.54m (24-9 feet) on his third attempt to finish among the top 12.
