James Taylor, Carole King announce reunion tour dates

In the four decades since James Taylor and Carole King helped launch each other's storied careers, the notion of someday recapturing that magic never completely faded.

Share story

In the four decades since James Taylor and Carole King helped launch each other’s storied careers, the notion of someday recapturing that magic never completely faded.

“Every time we would run into each other at a benefit or at an event … we’d say we have to get the band back together, get that band back together and do some touring before the chance slips away,” Taylor said in a recent interview.

On Monday, Taylor and King announced dates for the U.S. leg of their much-anticipated “Troubadour Reunion” tour. The tour, marking the 40th anniversary of the pair’s breakthrough shows, will launch May 7 in Portland, Ore.

As previously announced, the tour will begin overseas in Melbourne, Australia, on March 26.

“In a sense we started our solo careers sharing a band, sharing a stage, we did a show at the Troubadour in Los Angeles that really sort of broke both of us out of the box and established our careers,” Taylor said.

King played on Taylor’s 1970 “Sweet Baby James” album and Taylor on King’s 1971 “Tapestry” album.

“We started performing, originally she was in my band, and then I increasingly encouraged her to sing her own songs,” said Taylor. “She was used to being a writer, and to having other people do her tunes.”

King, in fact, had already written 22 Top 40 hits, including Aretha Franklin’s “(You Make Me Feel Like a) Natural Woman.”

“Tapestry,” released in 1971, sold more than 25 million copies worldwide and made King the first woman to win four Grammys in a single year.

Taylor, 61, has won five Grammys during his career. Both Taylor and King, 67, are members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

The idea for a reunion tour had been brewing for years, Taylor said.

“Finally, two years ago we played at a sort of anniversary celebration for (the Troubadour), with the original band and that was so great we decided to take it on the road.”

The tour will reunite not only Taylor and King, but key members of their original band, including guitarist Danny Kortchmar, drummer Russ Kunkel and bassist Lee Sklar.

While the shows will be at larger venues such as the Hollywood Bowl or Madison Square Garden, the performers hope to recapture at least some of the intimacy of those early Troubadour days, in part by staging the concerts in the round. Taylor said he and King will remain on the stage together throughout the show.

“I think we’ll do two sets, both of us will be on stage the whole time, either singing backup for each or playing behind the other. We’ll sort of skip back and forth, do a song of hers, a song of mine, but we’ll stay on the stage,” he said.

“It’s just going to be a blast.”

Book By Douglas McGrath

Directed By Michael Barnard

Music Director Kevin White

From young songwriter to Rock and Roll Hall of Famer… are you ready to feel the earth move with the incredible true story?

Before Carole King became one of the most successful solo artists in popular music, she was Carol Klein, a Brooklyn teenager striving to make it in the record business. With classics like “You’ve Got a Friend,” “Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” “Up on the Roof,” and “Natural Woman,” audiences will feel nostalgic, inspired, and some kind of wonderful.

Since writing her first number 1 hit “Will You Love Me Tomorrow” at the tender age of 17, Carole King has arguably become the most celebrated and iconic singer/songwriter of all time.

carole king story tour

Carole wrote "Will You Love Me Tomorrow for The Shirelles with then-husband Gerry Goffin. The dozens of chart hits Goffin & King wrote during this period have become part of music legend, including “Take Good Care Of My Baby” (Bobby Vee, 1961), “The Loco-Motion” (Little Eva, 1962), “Up On The Roof” (The Drifters, 1962), “Chains” (The Cookies, 1962; The Beatles, 1963), “One Fine Day” (The Chiffons, 1963), “Hey Girl” (Freddie Scott, 1963), “I’m Into Something Good” (Herman’s Hermits, 1964), “Just Once In My Life” (with Phil Spector for The Righteous Brothers, 1965), and “Don’t Bring Me Down” (The Animals, 1966).

In 1960 Carole made her solo debut with a song called “Baby Sittin’” and, two years later, her demo of “It Might As Well Rain Until September” made the Top 25 in the United States, climbing all the way to No. 3 on the British chart. In 1967 Goffin and King’s “Natural Woman”
was immortalized by Aretha Franklin. To date, more than 400 of her compositions have been recorded by more than 1,000 artists, resulting in 100 hit singles.

carole king story tour

Carole's many late-career achievements include a 50th anniversary Troubadour reunion run
with James Taylor that became the RIAA gold- certified Live At The Troubadour , inspiring the pair’s 60-concert Troubadour Reunion world tour in 2010. The Troubadour shows also inspired the Morgan Neville-directed feature-length documentary Troubadours: Carole King/James Taylor & The Rise Of The Singer-Songwriter , and premiered on PBS’ American Masters in 2011 shortly after being released on DVD.

carole king story tour

Carole published her memoir, A Natural Woman, in 2012, which debuted on The New York Times best-seller list at number six and prompted Vanity
Fair to say, “America is having a Carole King moment."

carole king story tour

In January 2014, Carole was honored as MusiCares Person Of The Year and a special gala was held at the Los Angeles Convention Center in which several of today’s most popular artists, including Lady Gaga, Alicia Keys, and Kacey Musgraves, performed many of her classics. To end the night, Carole herself came out to perform “Home Again”, “Jazzman”, and “Sweet Seasons”/”Hey Girl” with James Taylor; after all these years, she proved that she could still captivate an entire audience.

carole king story tour

On July 3, 2016, Carole returned to the UK stage for the first time in 27 years to perform Tapestry in full at a sold-out performance at Londone's Hyde Park during the BST Festival.  The 65,000+ audience spanned multiple generations and showed the power and timelessness of Carole's music.

In 2019, she performed at the national "A Capitol Fourth" concert in Washington D.C. and at the Global Citizen Festival in New York's Central Park, and presented the Artist of the Decade Award to Taylor Swift at the American Music Awards.

carole king story tour

In 2021, Carole was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame a second time, becoming the first person to be inducted separately as a songwriter and a performing artist.

carole king story tour

In 2021, Carole wrote a new song, "Here I Am (Singing My Way Home)" with Jennifer Hudson and Jamie Hartman, for Hudson's star turn as Aretha Franklin in the biopic 'Respect.' The film aso includes Hudson's bravura performance of the Goffin/King song "(You Make Me Feel) Like a Natural Woman," the 1967 hit credited as cementing Franklin's status as a superstar.

Review: BEAUTIFUL: THE CAROLE KING STORY at Argenta Contemporary Theatre

ACT has a sold out run

pixeltracker

Co-written by Jim Allen

Big things are happening at the newly christened Argenta Contemporary Theater, 405 Main St, in North Little Rock, and it is no surprise that they had another sold out hit, this time with BEAUTIFUL: THE Carole King STORY, which ran from April 17-27. In fact, it was so popular that they added extra seats, and it still wasn’t enough. Because Director and Producer Vincent Insalaco combined this fabulous era of music with my favorite Central Arkansas performers, it was no wonder why this show went straight to number one.

Review: BEAUTIFUL: THE CAROLE KING STORY at Argenta Contemporary Theatre

With Book by Douglas McGrath , BEAUTIFUL is a jukebox musical that steps into Carole King ’s life around the age of 16 (1958), through the time she comes back to New York for her debut at Carnegie Hall (1971). In between this timeline, Carol ( Jessica Lauren Mylonas) writes for Don Kirshner (Larry Lapaglia), meets and falls in love with fellow songwriter Gerry Goffin ( Craig Wilson ), becomes besties and competes with Cynthia Weil (Bridget Davis) and Barry Mann ( Skye Scott ), has babies, writes a ton of hits, gets a divorce, and creates Tapestry that wins her a Grammy.

Watching these performers sing song after song was so much fun. Mylonas had radiant joy shining through her eyes and portrayed Carole with feminism strength during the struggles. So, maybe she wasn’t really playing the piano. It didn’t matter. Her skill of captivating the audience while she was singing compensated for the silent prop.

Wilson did an excellent job at portraying a selfish, unstable partner for Carole. You could tell from his coolness at school that he was going to be trouble. Wilson and Mylonas worked well as a duo, and when Gerry had a nervous breakdown, we had mixed feelings. Do we feel sorry for him? Do we hope Carole leaves him? Wilson made it hard for the audience to hate Gerry completely.

Davis and Scott were adorable in their pairing. Their chemistry was undeniable, however, being a real-life married couple may have something to do with that. Davis portrayed Cynthia as a strong, independent woman who was determined to succeed in a male-dominated industry. Scott’s Mann had us cracking up with his neurosis and insecurity. It was classic opposites attract type of relationship, and they made it work.

Review: BEAUTIFUL: THE CAROLE KING STORY at Argenta Contemporary Theatre

I don’t want to leave out Lapaglia and Kathryn Pryor as Carole’s mom Genie Klein. Throughout the musical it was made known that Carole’s father was not in the picture, so it was heartwarming that Lapaglia seemed like a father figure in her life. Lapaglia gave off steady strength that was felt in the audience. Pryor’s Genie was also a caring support for Carole, and we all loved her every time she entered the scene. I am confident in stating that Pryor is beloved by all. She has that star quality that makes you light up when she’s on stage.

The music, of course, was a major focal point of the story. The two writing pairs wrote so many songs......Some Kind of Wonderful, Take Good Care of My Baby, Up On The Roof, On Broadway, The Locomotion, You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling, Pleasant Valley Sunday...and so much more. The ensemble performed as The Drifters, The Shirelles, Little Eva, Righteous Brothers, Neil Sedaka and all of the other stars that graced the radio with their songs. The cast shimmied and swayed from one song to another, and all ages in the audience were having a blast with it.

My co-writer Jim Allen said, “Even at first glance of the set, I felt like I was in the 60’s thanks to set designer Nicholas Bius. Costume designer Shelly Hall did excellent work ensuring every item fit the era, from the clothes and hairstyles down to the shoes and handbags.  The cast selection was fantastic and complimented each other amazingly. Even the members of the Drifters and the Shirelles seemed as though they had been together for years.”

Fun was had by all, but that is normal when coming to The Argenta. This summer ACT will be focusing on their summer education classes and will present GREASE in July. I’ve seen the cast list, and I’m excited. For more information, visit their website at https://argentacontemporarytheatre.org .

As always, I want to thank the amazing Warren McCullough for these fabulous pictures and my friend Bob Blevins for taking time out of the VIP section to say hi to me.
