Where are the best places to go tubing in Hawaii?

Unlike many American states, the Hawaii Islands are home to only a few rivers — only one of which is navigable by boats larger than kayaks — so we must instead take our inflatable tubes to the ocean. That's okay, many Hawaii beaches are perfect for a fun, relaxing float. If you want to do "river" tubing in Hawaii, we suggest either Flumin' Kohala or Kauai Backcountry Adventures.

Can I bring my own tube to go tubing in Hawaii?

Sure, you're always welcome to bring your own floatation devices to Hawaii beaches, though we suggest heading to the lesser-known, secluded beaches for the most relaxing float. Just be sure to keep an eye on them — that tropical, island breeze will pick up floaties in a second and you wouldn't want to lose that adorable, pink donut float (just me?).

When does tubing season end in Hawaii?

With near-perfect weather year-round, tubing season in Hawaii never has to end. Water temperatures dip in the winter, though, so if you're used to those island temperatures, you might want to stay away from the beach in Hawaii's coldest months.

Flumin' Kohala - Kayak the Ditch

This Big Island Kayaking Tour is currently unavailable for booking on our site. Please visit our Hawaii Kayaking Tours page for other available tours.

Kayak the famed Kohala Ditch on the Big Island. This is a truly unique Hawaiian adventure that takes you into the verdant mountains of Kohala. Hand-drilled and blasted out of solid rock around 110 years ago, the Kohala Ditch is a system of tunnels, concrete channels and elevated flumes that once supplied millions of gallons of freshwater to the Kohala sugarcane plantations. Hundreds of men were involved in its construction and many perished. Up until today, the Kohala Ditch is a symbol of engineering skill and human determination. Flumin’ Kohala offers you the chance to explore this marvelous irrigation system and the pristine Hawaiian landscape it crosses. On a leisurely 3-mile kayak float you will get to see waterfalls, streams and access lush private lands that are home to other natural and man-made wonders. This tour is as much fun as it is educational and is the perfect Hawaiian eco tour for families and groups of friends. Tour Highlights:

  • Kayak the historic Kohala Ditch, an irrigation system that was hand-wrought over a century ago
  • Seated in four-man kayaks, you will float through thousand-foot tunnels dripping with spring water
  • Quietly meander through lush forests by way of winding concrete channels

We Tried Floating the Big Island of Hawaii Kohala Flume, Here’s How it Went

In doing my Big Island trip research on Pinterest, I stumbled across pictures of this place in Kohala where people have turned an old flume system into a water slide. The only down side is that there aren’t any clear directions to get there, and you are trespassing on private property to get there.

kohala ditch tour

A majority of the Kohala forest on the northern part of the Big Island is private property (which makes me so interested in all the beauty that is hidden on these properties). Not only did I stumble across that flume waterslide, but I also stumbled across these beautiful waterfall images that are also on private property. Most of these amazing sites are only accessible by tour groups that have the permits to take you there (and are very expensive).

Like the rule breaker I am not, I decided to try and find a more legal way to get into the Kohala forest and check out a flume irrigation system. I stumbled across the tour group: Flumin’ Kohala . Keep in mind, tickets for this are not cheap. We paid over $135 per person to do this, however, it is a once in a lifetime tour. There are many factors that go in to being able to float this and one of those is water level. If there has been a huge rainfall or lack of rainfall, you can’t go.

What is the Kohala Ditch?

The Kohala ditch are hand blasted rock tunnels that were blasted over 100 years ago. The Ditch was able to bring water to the area of Kohala, which is located on the north side of the island. There were hundreds of Japanese men that worked on this ditch, which created an irrigation system for everyone in the area.

What are Flumes?

The flumes are the bridge systems that connected the thousand foot rock tunnels together and kept the water flowing.

There isn’t a ton of information online about what to really expect on this tour, but here is how it went from my perspective:

The Adventure

From Kona, you will drive about an hour to the town of Hawi where you will find a quaint town (where you should spend some time after the tour). Be prepared for this tour. You need to bring:

  • A Towel (or two)
  • Sandals with an ankle strap or water shoes
  • A full change of clothes

You will load up in a van and take an off road adventure through someone’s property to the start of the kayak tour. The road was so bumpy I was surprised the van could make it (and they make this drive multiple times per day!

kohala ditch tour

I was surprised how narrow the ditch was! It is enough for narrow inflatable kayaks to fit. The front and back people are given paddles to steer and to bounce off the sides of the wall. Your guides will give you some in depth history of the tunnels and the flumes. It was all very interesting!

kohala ditch tour

A majority of the time you will be floating through the tunnels. This is where you start to get wet. There are constant drips coming from the tunnel ceilings, which are manageable..at first.

We were the middle boat of 3 and up ahead heard the boat in the front scream! As we got closer, we heard the RUSHING sounds of what sounded like a waterfall. Since the ditches were so narrow, we had no choice but to go right through it. We were SOAKED…and I didn’t have a full change of clothes with me.

kohala ditch tour

The waterfall was in the beginning of the tour so I hoped to dry off by the end. As we would exit tunnels and go through the flumes, the rain started to pour. Keep in mind, Kohala is the wettest part of the Big Island so not only were we getting drenched inside the tunnels, we were now getting drenched outside the tunnels!

I LOVED this tour after I accepted that I was just going to get drenched! Be ready to get wet, duck back in your kayak more than once to avoid hitting your head on the tunnel ceilings and flume rafters, and enjoy the ride!

About Hawaii Forest and Trail Team

Try to find another tour company with better reviews than Hawaii Forest and Trail. Even their sister company, Kohala Zipline, knocks it out of the park with reviews and A+ experience. We trust them with your Island of Hawaii vacation.

Rob Pacheco has a passion for the natural world of Hawaii. It is a passion that began almost as soon as he stepped off the plane here in 1990 and quickly realized that these islands contain diverse and unique ecosystems rivaling any place on earth.

Because of its isolation in the middle of the Pacific and its volcanic geology, Rob realized that Hawaii is a place unparalleled for studying evolutionary biology, extinction, endangered species, and conservation. It is a place where the fundamental lessons of creation and earth sciences could be seen, experienced, and understood.

At the same time Pacheco, who had worked as a naturalist on the mainland, concluded most residents and visitors were only seeing Hawaii’s beautiful scenery and had little knowledge of Hawaii’s natural history. Pacheco decided to combine his passion with a vision: to share his passion for natural history with others and to help conserve Hawaii’s endangered environment by educating them about it. It was a vision that fit well with the growing worldwide interest in eco-tourism. Soon thereafter, and with the help of his wife Cindy whom he had met in Kona, the idea for Hawaii Forest & Trail was born.

One of the integral ideas the Pachecos instituted was to establish partnerships with private landowners that would allow tours to places with wild and remote native ecosystems that had been previously inaccessible. Hawaii Forest & Trail is one of the few tour companies allowed access to private lands and controlled-access wildlife refuges.

Another important element Pacheco built into Hawaii Forest & Trail was the practice of having knowledgeable and qualified guides. In 1993, when Hawaii Forest & Trail began offering its first adventures, Pacheco was “the only guide” for every trip.

Since then he has built up a team of guides with strong academic backgrounds in biology, geology, Hawaiian culture and history, and extensive natural history field experience. It’s not enough for the guides to simply “know things”, they must also have a real passion for Hawaii’s natural world and enthusiasm for sharing it.

Kohala UTV Tours

From the  Hawaiian Dictionary ,  by  Elbert & Pukui: kau.holo  vt. To pursue in order to harm, chase, to run after, run and fetch.

The birth of Paiʻea was preceded by omens foretelling the birth of a rebel and killer of chiefs. To protect his rule, the King of Hawaii dispatched warriors to kill the child. But the people of Kohala spirited the newborn away and hid him at ʻĀwini, in the heart of the mighty canyons of Kohala. Safely hidden away in ʻĀwini, Paiʻea would survive to fulfill the prophecies and become the warrior king,  Kamehameha the Great .

Inspired by this tale of escape,  Kauholo  — composed and performed by Kohala’s Grammy Award Winning artist John Keawe — celebrates the ingenuity and perseverance of the future king’s rescuers as they raced across Kohala, at times just steps away from their pursuers. Hope and sanctuary awaited them, if they can make it to ʻĀwini.

Kohala’s rugged backcountry and rich heritage are yours to explore with Kohala UTV Adventure !

The Refuge of Kings

The Rugged Backcountry of North Kohala , with its impenetrable forests and precipitous valleys, has served as a refuge and battleground for centuries. Powerful chiefs battling to control the island would time and again find themselves stymied by the treacherous terrain as they sought to defeat rebels who had escaped to the deep canyons. Before achieving what no other had achieved before him – conquering and uniting all the islands – even Kamehameha The Great sought protection here. To this day, these forests provide, for a select few, escape from the daily “battles” of life. A chance to regroup, recuperate, and reemerge…ready to battle anew.

Kohala UTV Adventure offers you a rare glimpse of this pristine Hawaiian landscape, and of the history and legends they have inspired. Join us on a guided UTV tour along the rim of the northern-most of Kohala’s seven valleys: the Valley of the Long Spear, Pololū . Safely seated in your nimble 5-seat off-road “utility task vehicle” (UTV), we will meander makai (towards the sea) through the lush pastures of a working cattle ranch before journeying mauka (towards the mountains) where cool mists, verdant forests, and rushing streams await.

Leisurely paced, educational, fascinating and fun, this UTV tour is the perfect Hawaiian eco-activity for families and groups.

Come ride with us for an unforgettably unique Hawaiian experience!

Flumin' Kohala Ditch

THE FAMED KOHALA DITCH ON THE BIG ISLAND OF HAWAII

What's the cancellation policy.

We understand that circumstances change and you may need to cancel your reservation. Full price will be charged for cancellations and “no shows” unless we receive prior notice before your scheduled tour as follows: Groups of one to five guests – 24 hours; six to ten guests – 48 hours; eleven or more and private charters – 72 hours.

Is there an age requirement?

Minimum age is 5 years old. Youths under age 14 must have an adult accompany them on the tour. Anyone under the age of 18 will be required to complete their own Voluntary Participation Agreement and Waiver and have their parent or legal guardian sign the form for them.

Are there weight requirements?

Although each kayak is rated up to 1,200 pounds, we limit each individual rider to a maximum of 300 pounds.

Where do we check in at?

We have a check-in desk at our headquarters in the town of Hāwī (pronounced “ha-vee”) at 55-517 Hāwī Road. We are in the smaller yellow building between the eco-tours parking area and the zip line operation.

Should I take my keys and valuables with me?

Not a great idea, unless you have them well secured in a container that will not open or fall away from your possession during the tour.

I have hiking-style sandals - can I wear those?

Closed toe shoes are a better choice – athletic or hiking shoes are best. Wear shoes that you do not mind getting wet. NO slippers or flip flops allowed.

Got Senior, Military, or Kamaaina Discounts?

For Kamaaina & Military (stationed in Hawaii) discounts, please register at Kamaaina.org . This site will verify your residency for you. For senior and other military discounts please call for details.

Will we do other outdoor activities besides floating along in a kayak?

Besides the leisurely kayak float, there will be an off-road van tour and a short, 10 minute walk alongside the ditch and across an elevated flume before boarding the kayaks.

I'm amped! What sort of white water rapids will we be shootin' on this tour?

Sorry dude, the answer is: none. There is no white water on this tour. The tour is a leisurely float with very little paddling conducted at about the same rate as a casual walk down the street. The only “shootin’” will be with cameras.

Do I have to wear a swimsuit?

Absolutely not — casual recreation clothing is fine. However, there is a very high likelihood that you will get splashed and/or doused during the tour and your clothes will get wet. Wear clothing that you do not mind getting wet. It is highly recommended that you bring a towel and a change of dry clothing for you to change into after the tour in the event you get wet. Note that our policy is “no clothes, no service” so don’t plan on kayaking naked. It’s kind of cold for that anyway.

I do not know how to swim. Should I be concerned?

If you should fall into the ditch, simply stand-up. The water is only knee deep.

Are there any medical considerations I should be concerned with?

If you have any of the following medical conditions we STRONGLY recommend you consult your physician prior to participation in our tour, and discuss any concerns with your guide:

  • Heart disease or any cardiac condition that may require immediate medical attention
  • Take any blood thinning medications
  • Epilepsy or seizure disorders
  • Pregnant or think you may be pregnant
  • Insulin dependent
  • Severe allergic reactions
  • Severe recent, reoccurring, or existing injuries including, but not limited to, back, joint, and neck issues

You cannot participate in a tour if you are:

  • Under the influence of alcohol, illegal drugs, or legal drugs that impair you in any way
  • Subject to severe anxiety attacks, especially those triggered by the dark or confined spaces

History of Moscow Oblast

The territory of the Moscow region was inhabited more than 20 thousand years ago. In the first millennium AD, this land was inhabited mostly by the Finno-Ugric peoples (Meryane and Meshchera). In the 9th-10th centuries, the Slavs began active development of the region. The population was engaged in hunting, fisheries, agriculture, and cattle breeding.

In the middle of the 12th century, the territory of the present Moscow region became part of the Vladimir-Suzdal principality, the first towns were founded (Volokolamsk in 1135, Moscow in 1147, Zvenigorod in 1152, Dmitrov in 1154). In the first half of the 13th century, the Vladimir-Suzdal principality was conquered by the Mongols.

In the 14th-16th centuries, Moscow principality became the center of unification of Russian lands. The history of the Moscow region is inextricably linked to military events of the Time of Troubles - the siege of the Trinity-Sergius Monastery by the troops of False Dmitry II, the first and second militias.

More historical facts…

In 1708, by decree of Peter the Great, Moskovskaya gubernia (province) was established. It included most of the territory of present Moscow oblast. In 1712, St. Petersburg became the capital of the Russian Empire and the significance of the Moscow region as the country’s economic center began to decrease.

In 1812, the Battle of Borodino took place near Moscow. It was the biggest battle of the Russian-French War of 1812. In the second half of the 19th century, especially after the peasant reform of 1861, the Moscow province experienced economic growth. In 1851, the first railway connected Moscow and St. Petersburg; in 1862 - Nizhny Novgorod.

The population of the Moscow region increased significantly (in 1847 - 1.13 million people, in 1905 - 2.65 million). On the eve of the First World War, Moscow was a city with a population of more than one million people.

In November, 1917, the Soviet power was established in the region. In 1918, the country’s capital was moved from St. Petersburg to Moscow that contributed to economic recovery of the province. In the 1920s-1930s, a lot of churches located near Moscow were closed, a large number of cultural monuments were destroyed. On January 14, 1929, Moscow Oblast was formed.

In 1941-1942, one of the most important battles of the Second World War took place on the territory of the region - the Battle for Moscow. In the postwar years, the growth of economic potential of the region continued; several science cities were founded (Dubna, Troitsk, Pushchino, Chernogolovka).

In the 1990s, the economy of Moscow Oblast experienced a deep crisis. Since the 1990s, due to the motorization of the population and commuting, road traffic situation in the Moscow region significantly deteriorated. Traffic jams have become commonplace.

Moscow Oblast - Features

Moscow Oblast is located in the central part of the East European Plain, in the basin of the rivers of Volga, Oka, Klyazma, Moskva. The region stretches from north to south for 310 km, from west to east - 340 km. It was named after the city of Moscow, which however is not part of the region. Part of the administrative authorities of the region is located in Krasnogorsk.

On the territory of the Moscow region, there are 77 cities and towns, 19 of them have a population of more than 100 thousand people. The largest cities are Balashikha (518,300), Podolsk (309,600), Mytishchi (262,700), Khimky (256,300), Korolyov (225,300), Lubertsy (209,600), Krasnogorsk (174,900), Elektrostal (149,000), Odintsovo (138,900), Kolomna (136,800), Domodedovo (136,100).

The climate is temperate continental. Summers are warm, winters are moderately cold. The average temperature in January is minus 10 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 19 degrees Celsius.

One of the most important features of the local economy is its proximity to Moscow. Some of the cities (Odintsovo, Krasnogorsk, Mytishchi) have become in fact the “sleeping districts” of Moscow. The region is in second place in terms of industrial production among the regions of Russia (after Moscow).

The leading industries are food processing, engineering, chemical, metallurgy, construction. Moscow oblast has one of the largest in Russia scientific and technological complexes. Handicrafts are well developed (Gzhel ceramics, Zhostov trays, Fedoskino lacquered miniatures, toy-making).

Moscow railway hub is the largest in Russia (11 radial directions, 2,700 km of railways, the density of railways is the highest in Russia). There are two large international airports - Sheremetyevo and Domodedovo. Vnukovo airport is used for the flights within the country.
