Braulio Carrillo National Park

Quick facts.

  • Location : 13 miles northeast of San Jose
  • Area : 113,371 acres
  • Hours : 8:00 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily
  • Telephone : 2608-1037
  • Entrance Fee : $10.00

Dense rainforest, tumbling waterfalls, towering volcanoes and rushing rivers fill the landscape of Costa Rica's second-largest national park, a green paradise just 30 minutes from busy San Jose. Braulio Carrillo's diversity of life is owed to its varying geography -- from humid, lowland jungles just 160 feet above sea level to chilly cloud forest at an altitude of 9,535 feet.

Named after Costa Rica’s third Chief of State, Braulio Carrillo, who proposed the construction of the Guapiles highway, the park is one of the country’s least explored and most beautiful. Misty hillsides are home to shy quetzals and boisterous howler monkeys; Caribbean lowlands hide colorful parrots amid lush vegetation. In these two extremes, Barva Volcano sits proud and mighty, Cacho Negro Volcano watches over the valley, and the Dirty River (Rio Sucio) meets with the clear Hondura River.

Mostly untouched and rarely visited, Braulio Carrillo National Park is like a trip back to an undiscovered Costa Rica. Hikers will notice an amazing variation of flora and fauna. The scenery changes dramatically over short distances. High elevations are marked by primary cloud forest that has grown undisturbed for thousands of years, or stands of ragged and windblown trees.  The lower slopes host thick rainforest and an abundance of wildlife, including more than 150 species of mammals.  Over 6,000 plant species, including the caoba, oak, gavilan and ceiba, can be found in the primary forest. Visitors should be prepared for the occasional bout of cold weather. Temperatures often dip below 60 degrees Fahrenheit on the higher elevation trails near the Zurqui Ranger Station. If you prefer a warmer route, stick to the lowlands on the east side of the park. A highlight of any visit to  the area is the privately-owned Rainforest Aerial Tram, located in the heart of the rainforest near the eastern side of the park. Visitors can glide above the canopy layer in one of twenty cable cars or zip through second-growth forest on a canopy tour, enjoying panoramic views and beautiful greenery. Rainforest Aerial Tram Tel. 2257-5961

Annual Rainfall: 4,500-8000 mm  Temperature: Ranges from 59º F in the high altitudes to 90º F

Activities:

Bird & wildlife watching, hiking, and climbing Barva Volcano are among the park’s most popular activities. Camping ($2 + $8 park entrance fee) is highly recommended at the Barva Volcano ranger station, where an early morning start will assure you a timely ascent up the four- to five-hour trail to Barva Volcano’s scenic summit. Potable water and toilets, but no showers, are available. Contact: 2266-1883 / 2266-1892 for more camping information.

Facilities:

Braulio Carrillo National Park is home to three ranger stations, which offer picnic facilities, camping and knowledgeable rangers:

The Zurqui Ranger Station, 14 miles north of San Jose along the Guapiles Highway

Carrillo (Quebrada Gonzalez) Ranger Station, also accessible via the Guapiles Highway

Barva Volcano Ranger Station, best reached by traveling through San Jose de La Montana, north of Heredia

If you enjoy hiking, Braulio Carrillo National Park is an ideal place to visit. Trails here lead you through an interesting variety of terrain to Barva Volcano and the beautiful Barva and Danta Lakes. Trails are available from all three ranger stations. You'll find two main hiking trails at Zurqui Ranger Station.  The Capulin Loop Trail, located across the road from the station, will take you through primary and secondary forest. The Natural Botarama Trail, located at the Carillo Ranger Station, 9 miles northeast of Zurqui, leads you on a two mile walk through primary and secondary forest.   Barva Ranger Station is the starting point to climb to the small lake in the crater of the dormant Barva Volcano. From the summit, hikers can either loop back to the village of Porrosati or, for those who have a permit, guide, and fours days worth of food, continue north to La Selva.

Flora & Fauna:

The cloud forest near Barva Volcano is home to a variety of frog and toad species, including strawberry poison arrow frogs, red-eyed tree frogs and the currently endangered Bufo holdridgei toad. Reptiles in residence include two of the most venomous snakes in the world: the fer-de-lance and the bushmaster, the largest venomous snake on the continent. Visitors are likely to cross paths with howler monkeys, spider and white-faced monkeys and coatimundis. Less commonly seen are tapirs, jaguars, pumas, ocelots, pacas, coyote and white-tailed deer. More than five hundred species of migratory and resident birds have been sighted in the park, among them gold finches, hummingbirds, scarlet-rumpled tanagers, and resplendent quetzals.

Recommendations:

A word of caution to motorists: cars left along the highway leading into the park have been vandalized on occasion. Make sure to remove all valuables from the car before your hike.  Be prepared for cold, wet weather with a jacket and raincoat.

Getting There:

By Car: From San Jose, follow the Guapiles Highway (32) headed northeast. The main ranger station, Zurqui, will be on the right side of the road, just north of the tunnel. The Carrillo station is also on the highway, 26 miles from San Jose. Farther to the west, the Barva ranger station is easiest to access by exiting San Jose via Heredia, then continuing north to Birri, Porrosati, Barva and Sacramento on 114. The station is two miles northeast of Sacramento on a dirt trail. Braulio Carrillo National Park is less than a 40-minute drive from San Jose.  Public Bus: Any bus going to Guapiles, Siquirres, or Puerto Viejo will pass the Zurqui Ranger Station where travelers can pay their entrance fee and proceed to the hiking trails. Buses depart from the Gran Caribe Terminal at Calle Central and Avenidas 15/17 in San Jose. At the end of the day, just flag down a bus for the return journey. Terminal del Caribe Tel. 2222-0610 Taxi: Travelers can make arrangements with a taxi driver for round trip transportation to the park for around $50-$60 from San Jose.

Costa Rica Zip Line – Adventure Guide

zip line pin

Just imagine soaring above lush jungle canopies filled with wildlife or looking out over stunning ocean views in the distance. A Costa Rica zip line adventure is not only a thrilling activity, it is also the perfect way to see the landscape of the country from a different perspective.

It is possible to enjoy zip lining throughout the country. We created this guide to give you insight to the absolute best places as well as provide you information to ensure you have the absolute best experience possible.

Zip Line Terminology

zipline

Before we get in to the best places to zipline, I wanted to give you some words and phrases that you should know in order to pick the best tour for your personal adventure level.

Tarzan Swing

canopy tour

A Tarzan swing is where you stand on a platform and you are attached to a cable which is attached in front of you.

You then jump and swing like a pendulum until you slow down and reach the ground.

It’s basically a rope swing from a high platform.

The initial drop may take your breath away, but then it is very exhilarating!

Superman Swing

zipling Monteverde

A Superman swing is when you do normal zip ling but while lying down and looking out over the jungle below.

It may seem a bit scary, but the view is definitely amazing!

In the picture above you can see my dad being daring and trying out the Superman in Monteverde….yes when our family visits we send them out on cables suspended over the jungle. 😉

rapelling

Rappelling is when you are attached to a cable and go down the side of a cliff face. Rappelling in Costa Rica is usually done down the side of a waterfall. It is a thrilling activity and a fun way to get up close to the strong rush of water coming down a cliff face.

Hanging Bridges

hanging bridge

Hanging bridges consist of nature trails and suspension bridges that you can walk over. These bridges vary in length and height but they can guarantee a great view! If you aren’t sure if zip lining is for you, a hanging bridge park could be a good way to enjoy overhead views of the jungle.

Canopy Tour

zip line

A canopy tour is just what zip lining tours in Costa Rica are often called. After all, you are getting an overhead tour of the canopy!

Popular Zip Lining Destinations

zip line costa rica

It is possible to enjoy a canopy tour all over the country, but there are a few destinations that are especially popular for this activity.

Monteverde

monteverde zip line

Monteverde is a small cloud forest town located in the Northern Mountain region of Costa Rica. It also happens to be the most popular zip lining destination in the country.

The main zip lining appeal here is that the landscape is so different from any other place.

Just make sure to pack warm clothes and bring a rain jacket for your adventure! It gets cold and wet here.

Suggested Tours

  • We suggest ziplining at Selvatura Park if you have small kids or aren’t feeling overly adventurous. Their park is great (it’s actually our favorite) but it doesn’t have the more crazy adventure aspects like rappelling and crazy free fall swings. If you would like to book a tour that includes lunch and hanging bridges, click here .
  • Sky Adventures is a great place for the whole family. They also have a gondola ride option which is perfect for snapping all the cloud forest pictures you want.
  • The Original Canopy Tour is the place to go if you want to have rappelling included in your adventure. Here you can rappell down 150ft to the canopy floor. There is also a Tarzan Swing included in the rate.
  • Monteverde 100% Adventure Park is another great option that has 10 cables, 2 Superman swings, rappelling, and a mega Tarzan swing

We created a full Monteverde zip lining guid e to give you all the details on soaring over canopies in this part of the country.

La Fortuna (Arenal)

la fortuna zip line

La Fortuna is a popular jungle adventure lovers town also located in the Northern Mountain area. It is home to the majestic Arenal Volcano and the La Fortuna waterfall.

We love ziplining here because there are multiple companies which offer this activity and you can take your pick of volcano or waterfall views.

S ky Adventures – We suggest this tour to families and people who aren’t feeling super adventurous. This trip includes a gondola ride with amazing views of Arenal Volcano and Lake Arenal. You will then soar over the jungle on a series of seven different cables.

Pure Trek – For all you daredevils. This tour combines a rock climb, ziplining and four waterfall rappelling descents. Lunch is also included in this tour.

Rincon de la Vieja

rincon zip line

Rincon de la Vieja national park is a volcano destination located in the Guanacaste region between the Liberia International Airport and the Nicaragua border.

This is a great place to zipline if you are interested in participating in multiple adventure activities in one day. It is also possible to go whitewater rafting, hike at the active volcano, and soak in hot springs at Rincon de la Vieja.

For more info, check out our Rincon de la Vieja guide.

Guachipelin Adventure – This tour combines ziplining, horseback riding, and tubing. The tour also includes a visit to natural hot springs, a volcanic mud bath, and a full buffet lunch. It’s a full day of fun and great memories!

Note that transportation is included from most hotels in Tamarindo , Flamingo , Playas del Coco , Hermosa , and Papagayo areas.

jaco zip line view tarcoles

Jaco is the nearest beach town from the San Jose International Airport. This busy town is located on the Pacific coast.

Zip lining here is fun because you can often enjoy sweeping views of the Pacific coast.

Ocean Park Ranch – They offer a super fun tour which combines zip lining, an ATV tour, and rappelling.

Los Suenos Adventure Park – Los Suenos has multiple combination packages. You can always opt to just do their zip lining course . This is a good option for those of you with children. The other tour option they have that I suggest is a combo tour of zip lining and a three hour ATV tour to a jungle waterfall.

Guanacaste Coast

zip line

One of the best places in the country to zip line with Pacific coast views, is Diamante Eco Adventure Park . This is the perfect place to combine multiple fun adventures in one day.

We suggest the All-Day Adventure pass that combines zip lining, hanging bridges, nature trails, stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking, snorkeling, admission to the animal sanctuary, butterfly garden, and botanical garden. Lunch, coffee, and fruit drinks are also included.

This park is easily accessible from Playa Flamingo , Playas del Coco , Playa Hermosa , and the Papagayo area .

Combo Tours

zip line

We are big fans of combo tours as a way of packing tons of fun in one day.

Many of the Costa Rican zip line companies have built their own parks which have other activities such as butterfly gardens, hanging bridges, rappelling, and more.

Usually you can save money by combining zip lining with other activities instead of booking multiple things separately.

FAQ About Zip Lining in Costa Rica

zip line

Q: Is there a weight limit for zip lining?

A: Most places will not allow people over 300 pounds (136 kilos) to participate. However, if you are concerned just contact the zip line company you are considering. They will be able to let you know their exact weight limit.

Q: Is there an age limit for zip lining in Costa Rica?

A: Different places have different age limits. However, most places allow children as young as age four to participate.

Q: Is it safe to zip line in Costa Rica?

That being said, there is never any shame in bowing out of the activity if you don’t feel safe for whatever reason.

If you would like a locker I suggest bringing a water bottle , a snack for after, sunglasses, sunblock , bug spray , and a change of clothes or bathing suit if you plan to participate in other activities after your zipline experience.

Q: Do zip lining ours include transportation?

A : Some of the tours we listed above include transportation, but not all of them. If you need a way to get around during your travels in Costa Rica we suggest renting a car from Adobe (our go-to rental car company that has a 10% discount for our readers).

Our Experiences Zip Lining

zipling Monteverde

We have always had very positive experiences zip lining in Costa Rica.

We have noticed that typically the more popular zip lining companies are popular for a reason. They tend to have the absolute best service.

The places we listed above all have amazing views, multiple platforms, long cable distances, and experienced guides.

I am not an overly adventurous person and was definitely a bit scared the first time I went zip lining, but I quickly realized it is so fun!

If you are not a thrill seeker, opt for places that allow you to skip things like the Tarzan swing.

Visiting Sarapiqui, Costa Rica

Where is sarapiqui located in costa rica.

Located in the northwestern region of Costa Rica, Sarapiquí is the largest county in the province of Heredia. The town of Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí (not to be confused with the Caribbean beach town of Puerto Viejo in the province of Limón) is located about 86 kilometers from Costa Rica’s capital, San José , approximately a two hour drive north and slightly east of the Central Valley. Sarapiquí is just over 74 kilometers, about an hour’s drive, to the tourist hub of La Fortuna at the foot of Arenal volcano .

costa-rica-sarapiqui-river

Driving from San José there are two main routes, either through Vara Blanca passing Poás Volcano or on route 32 through the Zurquí tunnel and Braulio Carrillo National Park, which protects 47,500 hectares (183 square miles) of virgin tropical cloud forest and rainforest habitats. The highway is bordered on both sides by lush green foliage, impressive views of mist rising over the canopy and emergents, small waterfalls along the side of the road, and the easily recognized Giant Rhubarb (Gunnera Insignis) plant locally referred to as the “poor man’s umbrella”.

Why Go to Sarapiqui

Sarapiquí is known for ecotourism, birding, wildlife, and adventure travel. Visitors go to Sarapiquí for thrills as well as relaxation and nature immersion in tropical rainforest tours . It is an excellent place for family rainforest excursions due to the range of activities for all ages, for honeymooners looking for a romantic getaway in nature, and for adventure travelers craving adrenaline-charged experiences in the wild. Sarapiquí has a long history of conservation, research, and environmental education as well as opportunities to enjoy exciting outdoor adventures.

What to do in Sarapiquí

Explore tropical rainforests.

The tropical rainforest of Sarapiquí astounds the senses with an abundance of exotic smells, sights, and sounds. From the unforgettable call of the howler monkeys at dusk or before a rainstorm, the frogs singing and birds calling out at night, to the indescribable smells of tropical hardwood tree species, to the diverse textures, shapes, and shades of leaves, lianas, and foliage, the rainforest never fails to impress. Staggering numbers of plant and animal species live in Costa Rica’s rainforests, comprising 5% of the world’s biodiversity.

Sarapiquí offers beautiful rainforest vistas. For early risers, catching the sunrise over the mists and the verdant canopy is worth setting the alarm. Those who prefer to sleep in can enjoy a leisurely and romantic sunset to the sound of chirping cicadas and birds settling down for the evening.

Enjoy Wildlife Hikes

A cradle of tropical biodiversity, Sarapiquí offers world-class rainforest hiking amid unique plants and animals, from strangler figs to capuchin monkeys. Sarapiquí draws expert birders from around the world. It is also an ideal destination for amateurs to spark a lifelong passion for wildlife watching. The county of Sarapiquí is home to several world-renowned private wildlife reserves and field stations where visitors can learn about conservation, ecotourism and current biological research.

Guided day hikes can be arranged to observe species including birds, sloths, and peccaries (boar-like mammal). Guided night walks provide opportunities to spot nocturnal creatures such as kinkajous (arboreal mammal), tree frogs, and owls. It is very important to go with a certified naturalist guide who has the knowledge, training, and equipment, such as scopes and special flashlights, to provide an informative, engaging and successful tour while respecting wildlife and the natural habitat.

Take Adventures with Hanging Bridges & Zipline Canopy Tours

costa-rica-sarapiqui-hanging-bridge

Taking advantage of its lush rainforest environment, you can find some of the most amazing zipline canopy tours and hanging bridges in Costa Rica in Sarapiquí. For those who are looking for a rush, zipline tours allow you to soar through the canopy on a series of cables and platforms with a special harness, safety gear, and trained guides. For a slower-pace and time to enjoy wildlife, hanging bridges suspended through the canopy provide the opportunity to soak in the biodiversity of the layers of the rainforest.

Make sure to bring proper footwear such as hiking boots or rubber boots to protect from snakes and insects, as sandals are not recommended on most rainforest trails. For zipline canopy tours , lightweight pants are recommended rather than shorts. Always wear natural insect repellent to protect yourself from bites while also protecting wildlife from harsh chemicals. Learn more in our article on what to pack for Costa Rica .

Go on a White Water Rafting Trip

The Sarapiquí River is a tributary of the San Juan River, which forms part of the northern border between Nicaragua and Costa Rica and eventually flows out to the Caribbean sea. It is a destination river for white water rafting, providing both class 3 and 4 rapids, which are ideal for both first-timers and experts.

It is very important to raft with a reputable company with trained and experienced rafting guides, proper equipment, safety talk, a detailed evacuation plan, and first aid protocol. Keep in mind that for safety it is best to avoid rafting or river activities during or after significant rainfall, which is common in the months of the rainy season. This is due to the possibility of flash floods and the danger of debris like tree trunks or rocks that can be uprooted dislodged and move downriver. Also, beware of thundershowers and lightning.

Take Farm and Food Tours

Sarapiquí offers delectable and educational farm and food tours for travelers who are curious to know the ins-and-outs of the production of tropical exports such as pineapple, chocolate, and coffee. There are also organic and family farms who open their operations to visitors to share about their personal connections to the land and products that often make their way all the way from Costa Rica to consumers around the world.

When to go to Sarapiquí

Sarapiquí provides the opportunity to experience the beauty and overwhelming biodiversity of the tropical rainforest, which of course, by definition receives significant rainfall year-round.

Alternating between the warm tropical sun and dramatic tropical downpours, the ever-present possibility of precipitation is what keeps the forests lush and verdant year-round. Temperatures year-round hover between the mid-60s℉ (15℃), to high 80’s℉ (27℃). There tends to be more humidity and rainfall during the peak months of Costa Rica’s “rainy season” from May to October , with slightly lower temperatures, lower humidity, and less rainfall during the peak of the “dry season” from December – March .

TreeTops Zipline Canopy Tour

Zip, rappel, & explore mountain forests.

  • 2-3 hour trip
  • Minimum age 10 (with adult)
  • Must be at least 14 without an adult
  • Must weigh between 90-260 lbs
  • Closed toe shoes are required
  • 10 ziplines and 5 swinging bridges
  • Prices start at $84

West Virginia’s forests are one of the things that make West Virginia so special. West Virginia is ranked 3rd in the country in terms of tree coverage, and there’s no better way to experience the magic of West Virginia’s mountain forests than high up in the leafy canopy. This is the perfect adventure for those who want to feel the wind in their face, but who also enjoy learning about the flora of an area. Our knowledgeable guides will not only lead your adventure, but show you so much more about plants, wildlife, and more.

The TreeTops Canopy Tour gives you a taste of multiple adventures in two to three hours. After checking in with your guides, you’ll get outfitted with a harness, gloves, and helmet. A short walk will lead you to the entrance to our course, where you trip leader will conduct “Ground School” with a safety speech and demonstration of proper ziplining technique. Now, you’re ready to zip!

The tour starts on a ridge top, which gradually descends through a forest of oak, maple, and birch trees before settling at a beautiful stand of hemlock trees along Mill Creek. You’ll fly through the hemlocks on 10 different ziplines, make your way over five swinging sky bridges, admire Mother Nature during a couple of short hikes on the forest floor, and conclude the tour with a free-hanging, 35-foot rappel! You’ll even zipline over Mill Creek, where you can admire this free flowing stream from above. This isn’t an ordinary zipline tour, however. The beauty of the old growth forest makes you feel as though you’ve been transported to a magical place. Your guides will teach you about the flora of the region, while pointing out various trees and their attributes. It’s adventure, but with a twist!

As a bonus, you can feel good that a portion of your admission to TreeTops Zipline Canopy Tour helps fund protective treatments for the beautiful hemlocks you’ll see along the way, which are currently endangered by invasive insects that can kill these majestic trees.

The minimum ages for TreeTops is 10. Participants must weigh between 90 and 260 pounds.

Book Your Adventure Today!

Requirements and limits.

  • The minimum age for this adventure is 10 years old.
  • Participants must weigh 90-260 pounds.
  • Participants must be of sound mind and body to perform specific safety tasks independently.
  • All guests participating must fill out a waiver prior to your trip. Those under 18 will need assistance from a guardian when filling out their form.
  • No alcoholic beverages, illicit drugs, or tobacco products are allowed while in our gear on our courses.
  • We do not allow pregnant individuals on TreeTops Zipline Canopy Tour. Please consult your guide about any other medical conditions before you head out on the course. Few conditions ever keep individuals from going on this course, but it really helps the guides cater to specific needs.
  • A moderate level of physical mobility is required for this course. Participants will be required to extend their arms and actively use their hands when steering and in proper zipline position.
  • Individuals will also be required to perform their own hand braking on this course. Backup systems will be in place, but guests must prove a certain level of competence with hand braking to continue past our beginner zips.

What’s Included

We’ll provide expert safety instruction and all the necessary safety gear, including helmets, gloves, and harnesses.  Your guides will carry a liter of water to split throughout the group, but it's very important to hydrate ahead of time during the summer months.

What to Wear

Closed-toed shoes are required. The TreeTops harness has leg loops and shoulder straps, so wear comfortable clothes that you can easily move around in and would be comfortable under a harness. Skirts, dresses, and other loose-fitting clothing may get caught in our rigging and should not be worn for TreeTops. A rain jacket is a good idea if weather dictates. Tightly tie back long hair so it’s out of the way.

What to Bring

During hot summer months, you might want to bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a full water bottle that can be safely clipped to your harness.  Let your guide know if any specialized medical supplies need to be brought out on course throughout the adventure. We will have a safe spot for car keys, but valuables are best left in your cabin or vehicles.

Where to Meet

Trips will start and end at building number 8 on the Mill Creek side of campus. Arriving 15 minutes prior to your trip time for check-in really helps the flow of the trip.

Inclement Weather

Trips will continue even during periods of heavy rain, but trips will be halted in the case of lightning or heavy sustained winds around our course.

Trip Length

It all depends on the size of your group, but the trip generally takes 2-3 hours. This includes gear-up time, ground school, and a bus ride back to base after completion of the course.

Hours and Reservations

Reservations are strongly encouraged for the TreeTops Canopy Tour. Tours depart morning to evening and run rain or shine, but we’ll temporarily close the course during lightning storms or high winds. If we know in advance that we will be closing TreeTops, we'll try to contact you. If your tour is cancelled, we’ll offer you the option to participate in another activity, rebook for a different day or time, or be issued a rain check.

There is inherent risk in anything you do, and we aim to mitigate any risk involved with ziplining. All TreeTops trips will have two guides - one lead, one sweep who are highly trained in both safety standards and rescues. Before the tour begins, your guides will review the procedures and explain the hazards during a practice, ground-level zip at Ground School. On course, you will be double clipped onto two steel cables, which are capable of supporting more than a ton of weight. TreeTops Zipline Canopy Tour was built by Bonsai Design, the premier zipline design and build company in America.

Can I watch my group zipline?

Onlookers will be able to observe participants at gear-up, ground school, and our first two ziplines.  After that, the tour will descend towards inaccessible areas within our hemlock preserve.

What is ground school?

Ground school is where participants will learn all the dos and don’ts of our zipline course. Guides will explain steering, braking (yes, you do this yourself), and any safety information to guests during this demonstration. Participants will be required to successfully demonstrate these skills before we begin the first zipline.

What if I am afraid of heights?

Once your tour begins you will be at heights of 30-100 feet for the entirety of the tour.  You will be required to perform physical tasks on course while also navigating any mental fears.  Our guides are highly trained in helping calm these fears and in most cases, participants are able to successfully complete course.

What if I decide if I do not want to continue the course?

There will be an option to exit the course after the second beginner zip via our escape zip.  This will require no effort on the guests' part besides a short hike out of the forest back to base.

Due to high traffic volume online booking is currently running slow. For booking help call (855) 379-8738 or see our Trip Planner .
