I was very impressed with the Liberty shows in New York and Las Vegas this season. The show floors were well organized and easy to shop as a buyer, which makes my job so much easier and more enjoyable. I also liked the many activations at the show – it is obvious that Liberty is working hard to cater to buyers and create a creative and interactive experience.

A guide to Las Vegas, from artsy neighbourhoods to the neon-lit Strip

Sin City is not all it seems. Beyond the intoxicating whirligig of casinos, concerts and costumed performers, local neighbourhoods are blooming with street art, while hiking trails offer desert vistas.

Las Vegas is a monument to human ingenuity and vice; capitalist performance art let loose in the outer reaches of the Mojave Desert; a neon-lit oasis existing solely to entertain us. Each year, up to 40 million people visit the city of just 635,000 residents that’s home to the world’s biggest tourist trap: the Strip. Many travellers might feel predisposed to dislike Sin City for its brashness, its lurid aesthetic, its populist appeal — but I find its unique brew of hedonism and heart intoxicating.   My first stop is the residential Arts District. In March 2020, when casinos on the Strip   were closed for an record six weeks in   response to the pandemic, the focus shifted to other neighbourhoods. Consequentially, here and in Downtown, local artists were hired to paint murals. Today, Frida Kahlo smiles down on me on a Main Street full of small businesses, including craft breweries and vintage clothes shops. Many Americans are now moving to Vegas; it’s not just the sunshine, good salaries and affordable housing that lure them, but the thriving culinary scene and community feel. The Vegas that most visitors flock to is the Strip, a cartoonish theme park of a boulevard serving up a sensory overload. As a blonde American gondolier sings to me, beautifully, in Italian, as she paddles me around The Venetian Las Vegas hotel, it dawns on me: this place isn’t meant to be authentic; it’s a world of make-believe.   But that doesn’t mean there aren’t real thrills to be had. At dusk, I drink delicious cocktails covered in glittery pop rocks, at a bar made to look like a fantasy facsimile of 19th-century Europe; I watch The Beatles LOVE by Cirque du Soleil, and am brought to tears by its intensity; then, almost as a rite of passage, I forfeit the contents of my purse to a slot machine. There are worlds here to explore, and, when it comes time to leave, I’ve barely scratched the surface. To entice new people to visit and others to return, Las Vegas continues to grow and change, launching bigger casinos, more exotic restaurants and sexier shows. Dozens of new attractions and events will open this week and dozens more the next. Vegas rolls with novelty and innovation, and the house always wins.

The Strip at night, featuring Paris Las Vegas hotel’s replica Eiffel Tower.

See & do

Cruise The Strip at night : Where else can you find a pyramid-shaped hotel shooting a beam of light into space, a shimmering, half-size Eiffel Tower and a thousand dancing, lit-up fountains, all within a four-mile stroll? Join the throngs for the must-see, most Vegasy part of Vegas: the Strip. The bridge linking the MGM Grand and New York-New York Hotel & Casino has some of the best views over the cacophony of neon lights. Next, weave through audacious, air-conditioned casinos where slot machines chortle and ping, snapping photos with costumed staff — from feather-clad dancers to Roman legionaries. See a show: There’s always something new on (Katy Perry, Sting and Usher are some of the musicians set to perform this summer), but there are classic residencies, too: opt for magician Criss Angel or the Blue Man Group for an evening to remember. The five   Cirque du Soleil shows currently playing, each at a different resort, are unique to Vegas, with over-the-top, water-based O being the hottest ticket.   Experience Fremont Street :   North of the Strip in Downtown, this is the original gambling district — and it could easily feel like a 1970s time capsule but for that fact the world’s largest (1,500ft long) video screen serves as a canopy, covering all five blocks. The gambling and entertainment hub capitalises on the area’s seedy roots: here, electric guitar players busk next to lingerie-clad women holding signs proclaiming ‘dances for cigarettes and vodka’. Continue east, and you’ll come to the open-air section of the street, the Fremont East District, which brims with bars and restaurants. Explore AREA15 : Discover alternate universes at this vast, immersive entertainment zone. They include Omega Mart, a ‘supermarket’ where a fridge leads to an alien world of slides and staircases. Expand your mind in the mirror rooms of Wink World, or head to Lost Spirits Distillery, where an immersive distillery tour takes you through a recreation of 19th-century London. Next door, newly opened Illuminarium offers virtual safaris, undersea adventures and more, via ‘video transport technology’. Visit ‘foreign cities’: Las Vegas serves up the European dream in spades. Crooning gondoliers paddle punters past a replica Saint Mark’s Square at The Venetian Las Vegas , while at the new Vanderpump à Paris restaurant at the Paris Las Vegas hotel, settle into a belle époque sofa for cocktails served in Louvre Pyramid-shaped glasses. You can also time travel: sample ancient Rome at Caesars Palace , or the era of the Egyptian pharaohs at the Luxor Hotel & Casino . For a conceptual hop across the US, grab a drink at a corner bar off Times Square at the   New York-New York Hotel & Casino .     Day trip to the Hoover Dam : This 726ft-high dam provides electricity to around 1.3 million households. Visit the Boulder City-Hoover Dam Museum before taking a tour of the inner workings of this engineering masterpiece. Adjacent Lake Mead has myriad tours, from cruises on a Mississippi-style paddle steamer to kayaking. It’s all a 40-minute drive from the Strip.

Gondoliers at work in front of The Mirage hotel, home to The Beatles LOVE by Cirque du Soleil.

Fergusons downtown : The rooms of this former motel host local artists and fashion designers, as well as artisans selling handmade T-shirts, soap and more. There’s also a cafe, a regular pop-up craft market and the Vegas Test Kitchen, where local chefs can try out their recipes during three-month residencies. Shopping malls: Casino winners love to spend their spoils at high-roller malls like the Grande Canal Shoppes or The Shops at Crystal . Fashion Show Las Vegas is a mall for clothes hounds looking to dress to impress, while at opposite ends of the city,   Las Vegas North and South Premium Outlets are where to go for brands from Prada to Levi’s. The Writer’s Block : Need to get away from the lights and the hubbub of the Strip? There’s no better place than this bookshop, with its floor-to-ceiling windows, potted plants and aroma of freshly ground arabica wafting from the coffee shop.

Omega Mart, a ‘supermarket’ at AREA15.

Golden Nugget : Lovers of kitsch will adore Fremont Street’s most distinctive hotel. Rooms are run-of-the-mill, but amenities include a swimming pool surrounding a fish tank, and one of the most lively and colourful casinos on the ground floor. Don’t stay here if sleep is a priority, but fun is right on your doorstep. Nobu Hotel at Caesars Palace :   This sumptuous hotel is hidden away inside the massive, bustling Caesars Palace, making it feel like a secret and serene oasis. The Japanese aesthetic adds class and creativity to the good-value rooms.

ARIA Sky Suites : Superlative in both its physical height and luxury, these ultra-modern, apartment-sized suites offer a dedicated concierge service, pool access and deluxe airport transfers. The expansive views over the city from the floor-to-ceiling windows in the bedroom, dining and living rooms are postcard-perfect.

Esther’s Kitchen, the restaurant credited with kick-starting the renaissance of the Arts District.

Famous Foods Street Eats :   This globe-trotting food court has everything from sushi and fried chicken to authentic Southeast Asian noodle dishes. At night, slip into the well-hidden speakeasy — the discrete entrance is behind a shelf lined with lucky cat figurines. Esther’s Kitchen :   When renowned chef James Trees opened his restaurant in the Arts District in 2018, people thought his choice of location was lunacy. But the food — simple, Italian-inspired fare with a focus on fine ingredients — attracted so many accolades that Esther’s Kitchen sparked a wave of interest in the neighbourhood. Don’t miss the sourdough bread with a whipped basil ricotta topping. Delilahs : Get your Great Gatsby on at this ritzy supper club where a diva belts out jazz tunes under crystal chandeliers to tables of finely dressed diners. The beef wellington is a rival to Gordon Ramsay’s and there’s a strict no-photo policy, owing to the fact that many celebrities like to spend their evenings here.

Red Rock Canyon, a hiking destination in the desert 25 miles west of the Strip.

After hours

Atomic Liquors : Opened in 1952, Las Vegas’s oldest bar was a favourite watering hole for workers at an atomic bomb test site 50 miles away. It’s said that nuclear explosions could be watched from the roof, and it later became a hangout for the Rat Pack. Lake of Dreams :   At this surreal lakeside show at Wynn Las Vegas, hop between three cocktail bars: the opulent Overlook Lounge, Asia-inspired Bar Parasol, and Aft Cocktail Deck, which has superyacht vibes. The cocktails mixed here by Mariena Mercer Boarini are as creative as they are delicious, and you’ll have the surreal perk of being serenaded across the lake by a giant, mechanical frog. Marquee Nightclub & Dayclub : Celebrity DJs spin EDM, house and hip hop amid light shows to crowds of up to 5,000 revellers dancing the night away. It morphs into a day club in the morning when the party rolls on in infinity pools and at an outdoor party deck.

Like a local

Take a hike : Las Vegas has outstanding desert hiking, with many trailheads under an hour’s drive from Downtown. Try the 2.2-mile trail from Calico Tanks into Red Rock Canyon, which winds over pink sandstone hills and ends at a magnificent viewpoint overlooking the Strip. Chinatown :   This three-mile stretch of Spring Mountain Road, commonly known as Chinatown Vegas, is lined with strip malls. But behind this shabby veneer are some of Vegas’s most interesting bars and restaurants. Head to kitschy The Golden Tiki, where any drink can be set on fire for $1 (80p); the Sand Dollar Lounge for blues and occasional surprise performances by ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons; or restaurants like Shanghai Taste for authentic xiao long bao. Arts District : Covered with murals by local artists and famous for its monthly First Friday street festival, which features live music and food trucks, this up-and-coming neighbourhood is the place to go for craft beer, art galleries and eclectic shops.

Chinatown’s The Golden Tiki bar.

Awful. Flight was continuously getting delayed and gates kept changing without any reason. Flight was delayed for more then 3 hours

I'm a larger, athletic guy (6'2", 260lbs powerlifter) and I found the seats incredibly uncomfortable with minimal leg room, especially in a window seat. Now, I full understand that being smaller may change my view but even if I was 80lbs less, my legs would be the same size and I was sandwiched between my seat and the seat in front of me.

This flight was ridiculous. I had to have a connecting flight from New York to orlando Florida??? The flight left late and because it was a short flight there was no first class amenities. I had one alcohol drink. The flight crew was fine, but it sure did not feel like first class. Delta to me dropped the ball by giving me a connecting flight. By the time we got to Raleigh we would have missed the next flight. Lucky for me the flight never came so now I was stuck waiting for a later flight that came in late also.

Seat back monitors and outlets were dead and not working.

Service was good for such a short flight. Small plane but smooth flight.

The flight was delayed but we got to our final destination.

Uncomfortable seats on 14 hour flight. Mediocre food. On time and great crew.

The helpful attitude of the staff, and being a wheelchair passenger everyone was helpful and understanding. The trip was made comfortable by the upgraded seat which was given without my request, that was a great surprise. Thank you Delta.

Gate crew helping to scan tickets was a little short tempered with customers. Flight crew was very friendly, welcoming , and provided excellent service on board.

Everything went well with the flight. But one of the flight attendants had on inappropriate pants. She had on an old worn out pair of sweat pants. The back seam was unrivaled and should not have been worn for work. If I had not seen her in the airport with the standard type of luggage, I certainly would not have thought she was working for Delta. Not a good look at all for representation.

The flight was excellent. The crew was welcoming and attentive.

Going through JFK’s security is a mess. The TSA security said no shoes on the bins. So, we place our shoes in the belt and they came out all over the belt. Boarding was delayed and Flight as well.

Safe and on time were the positives. The plane wasn't cleaned before boarding, there was garbage and food on the floor and in the seat pocket. The TV screen was small and the picture fuzzy, audio quality was poor. Seatbelt was fraying and seat did not recline properly. No charging ports near the seats,

There were multiple delays but JetBlue tried to make the boarding and departure process as quick and efficient as possible. The crew was as detached from reality as could be, meaning: not very friendly and just doing things by the numbers.

40 minute delay before take off after boarding flight. Bright lights throughout night flight due Issues with light panels. In flight Entertainment nonfunctional

Another horrible Jet Blue experience. This airline has suffered the biggest decline of all from best to worst. TVs didn’t work (again). internet was temperamental. Boarded late and couldn’t get organized to serve snacks.

I hate their constant delays! It’s as if I cannot confidently make plans for timing when I'm traveling with them. I slept through it, so all I can say is it was good.

There was no wheelchair or wheelchair escort at the gate..unacceptable

From bag drop to boarding, it was great. In-flight is a little different. The seats were a little uncomfortable for that long of a flight. The rest of the cabin crew except for Eva was wonderful. Eva was not friendly at all. I've had to personally encounter her twice in-flight. First time was when I had to go to the lavatory in the back of the plane, and since it was the first for me to board such tiny plane, I didn't know we were using the crew toilet. She was giving me an attitude while telling me where and how to open it since it's not the regular push to open type of door. The second one was when I had to throw trash then use the lavatory again. I asked where to throw them, and unfortunately she was the only crew in the back doodling on her phone, she had to point it out to me with an attitude then told me to wait on the carpet, which I understand because I didn't realize that, but she could have been nicer. After all, I'm a paying customer, and assisting a passenger who isn't knowledgeable about the aircraft is one of the things she's there for. The rest of the experience and crew from bag drop to in-flight were excellent except for her.

It took an hour to get my bag after landing. Not exaggerating

Fantastic. Smooth boarding with an infant. Never experienced it with any other carriers.

An hour and a half late is UNACCEPTABLE. The negative impact to our family is unconscionable. And for the price we were forced to pay...

flight delays, staff only communicating when pushed, food service lasting a grand total of 7 minutes, stuck in seat from 45mins into flight until landing

Nice flight, nice crew but no cookie or napkin with my seltzer.

The flight was canceled. Got rebooked to Chicago and when we arrived our luggage where to there. They were going to our original destination the day after. They would not deliver them to our house. We had to go pick them up.

737 Max was leaking water into the cabin through the windows. Overhead bins opened on landing. Bad bad plane.

Other than the two hour delay, it was fine. Of course they were very professional and kept us informed throughout the whole delay..

Easy boarding in group 2. Landed 1/2 hr early. Delicious cookie snack.

Good. The wife was not working but then it got resolved.

Missed this flight due to delays from my previous flight

WiFi connected but only let you go to the AA website, not even text messaging worked.

Generally good but we were delayed almost two hours from the original time of purchase. The pilot claimed an internal issue then an external equipment issue that needed to be adddressed. He made up a lot of the time.

The flight was excellent, provided that we had inclement weather. We departed earlier than scheduled and arrived early. There was a little turbulence, but nothing to be worried about.

pleased with overall experienced, but seats in coach are tight.

Don't often sit in 1st class. Our experience was great.

The 2 hour delay was frustrating but our crew did a great job getting us out quickly and keeping communication especially with the people who had connecting flights

The flight was 6 hr late and then they blamed it on the weather. All of the other planes were coming and going fine.

Well, flight times cause some wait, but there were not times available and we understood. I didn't check any luggage, because it has become too expensive. I was able to add any extra items to my co-travellers check bags. [Luckily, this trip wasn't international.] Last, I hadn't flown AA domestically for a while, but partners and coworkers had warned me in advance that not all planes have monitors at every seat. Luckily, I was mostly prepared to use the in-flight entertainment and happy I was. The great: AA staff is always kind and comfort is way better than the budget airlines that I sometimes have to fly. I know my points and vouchers all expired over the last couple of years, but I still enjoy AA when I do fly with them. I also appreciate all of the locations we can go directly from pur home airport. Since we are traveling more now, I hope to take advantage.

It was right on time and crew were very courteous

The flight attended didn't ask one everyone in our party if they wanted a drink or snack. The one attended appeared to hate her job which is the one that attended to us.

Terrible legroom, seats do not recline, tray table the size of an iPhone, delayed flight, have to pay 5$ to get a cup of water onboard.

The flight was on time and nice as always for me with spirit but the cabin crew were not good. They left the lights on on a red eye for the entire flight.

It was the worst ever, i will be filing a lawsuit to get a refund. Our flight was delayed 4 hours so we would miss our connecting flight, we were not rebooked to our destination the same day, we were not offered any options to get home on the same day despite being clear that we absolutely cannot get stranded at night due to family, we were forced to book our own flights on a different airline to get home, and spririt is refusing a refund because our flight wasn't cancelled, only delayed. oh yeah, and they lost our luggage on the first part of the trip and you cannot get a hold of customer service when anything goes wrong, on hold for 30+ minutes. and their app breaks so you can't use that either.

The crew was the best and very accommodating I know you don't offer any complimentary items but water and coffee will not break the bank !!

My experience with Spirit was perfect. Did not expect it to be this good

My mother was HARASSED AND ACCOSTED by the gate agent for her bag. I pre purchased the bag fee and the gate agent made my 78 year old mother board, deplane, re pay for her bag fee and board again. The gate agent made my mother pick up her own bag and REFUSED to help her, she is an older woman who wasn’t bothering anyone on a flight that had maybe 30’total passengers. I am going to sue this airlines for their HORRIBLE customer service and treatment of my mother, and all this occurred the day after Mother’s Day!!!

For it to have left on time! Instead of two hours early with zero notice

First the good, everyone was friendly and efficient. Flight was smooth and plane was very clean and new. Now the bad, seats have almost no padding on your behind. I was in exit row so I had tons of leg room for a 6' 2" bean pole with long legs. Everything was extra - water, soda, snacks everything besides oxygen. Ya get what you pay for, and my flight was cheap as you could ever want it, so no worries.

They dont really bother you about carry-on size, I brought a descent sized backpack and they didnt even check.

Kayak does not know that spirit airlines charged me $70 to fly. But the bag check-in was $89 each way. This is false advertising to lure people. Spirit airlines sends bunch of emails after flight purchases to buy wifi, better seats, priority boarding, secure reserved seats. This is false advertising. Up front pricing. I would of flown jet blue or Alaska airlines.

Las Vegas Vacations

Las Vegas, Nevada, is best known for its bright lights, star-studded shows, and world-class casinos. But no matter what sort of adventure you’re looking for, there are Las Vegas vacations that can fulfill your every wish. In fact, that is just what this sprawling desert metropolis is all about. Yes, you can allow the sights and sounds of the casino sweep you off your feet, but the next night you could spend at the spa, and the night after that, you can put on your dancing shoes. The only thing that you can’t do on vacations in Las Vegas is stay there forever. Or could you?

Major Attractions

Surely you have heard of the most famous street in America: The Strip. It features some of the most well-known places in the city, from classic casinos to the famous replica Eiffel Tower. Get your heart racing at the world's highest thrill rides—or in the casino—all located there. However, the more vintage, rock-and-roll atmosphere of downtown is also not to be missed. Try your luck at the legendary Golden Nugget casino, then stroll to the Neon Museum, where you’re sure to take some of your new favorite photos.

Did you know that the area around Las Vegas is filled with outdoor fun, too? Yes, journey away from the bright lights and you’ll find you can gaze up at lights of a different kind—the stars. The Hoover Dam and Red Rock Canyon are popular destinations to marvel at the power of Mother Nature. Now that is almost as awe-inspiring as our Las Vegas package deals.

Festivals and Events

While it’s true that any time is a good time to visit this happening town, there are some special events you might consider. You can book vacation packages in Vegas to coincide with monthly favorites such as the Art & Wine: A Perfect Pairing, held the second Wednesday of each month. Wines are paired with the featured works at the Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art for a unique combination of art and imbibing. If you prefer beer, sample from among more than 150 brews from around the world at the Desert Hops Nevada & International Beer Festival in August. However you choose to let loose, Las Vegas is here with a festival and a smile.

Hotels in Las Vegas

Hotels and flights go together like pools and pina coladas, and you’ll have plenty of those in your future when you’ve booked a cheap vacation in Las Vegas. As one of the world’s leaders in hospitality, though, “Sin City” has a whole lot of options when it comes to where to stay. Look into these hotels to add on to your package.

The hotel’s fountain shows may be its most famous attraction, but for guests lucky enough to have a room, the inside is even more impressive. Even the lobby ceiling is decorated with blown-glass flowers by the legendary artist, Dale Chihuly.
  • The Venetian Resort Hotel & Casino is the epitome of opulence, so if you are in search of the most elegant experience available, look no further. Splendid day trips you can take from Las Vegas — each less than a two-hour drive

Places shown: Valley of Fire State Park, Emerald Cave, Red Rock Canyon Conservation Area and Las Vegas Ballpark.

VEGAS-dropcap-I.png

I have a new system for beating the casinos in Las Vegas: I don’t spend a penny on the slots, the tables or the sports books. Instead, I bet heavily on red and green.

Red rocks and green waters, that is. Hiking and kayaking.

I tested the system on a series of day trips last month. Though I slept three nights in a hotel on the Strip, I headed out of town every day.

First: Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. Later, Valley of Fire State Park and the Colorado River’s Black Canyon, where the waters of Emerald Cave eerily glow. Then a night of minor league baseball.

None of these adventures took me more than 60 miles from the Strip (a.k.a. Las Vegas Boulevard). Yet the psychological distance seemed enormous. Maybe it’s no surprise that many climbers and other outdoorsy types have moved to Las Vegas for the access it gives them to rocks, mountains and such.

You know that semi-vacant look on so many slot machine players’ faces? You don’t see that so much on the trail or the river, even when the path is uphill or the paddling is against the wind. And it’s tough to find a poker face in the Las Vegas Ballpark when management is staging an Elvis karaoke competition between innings.

Here’s a rundown.

People bicycle on a road toward red rock hills, with larger hills in the distance

Red Rock Canyon

Driving distance from the Strip: About 30 minutes from the Stratosphere tower.

What makes it great : You’ll have no trouble finding the scenery at the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area .

Solitude might take a little longer, because the canyon is immensely popular and only an 18- to 22-mile drive from the Strip, depending on your route. Once there, you can hike, bike or drive a 13-mile loop through a landscape of stacked and tumbled boulders, some fiery red, some chalky white, many so strangely striated that you may suspect they’ve been scrubbed with steel wool.

Striated rocks and red rock cliffsides at Red Rock Canyon Conservation Area.

Many of the formations are Jurassic sand dunes that have been hardened to sandstone by time. You can drive between or hike on 16 trails threaded through the rocks, junipers and some Joshua trees too.

For drivers and cyclists, it’s a one-way route, with a speed limit of 35 mph, on a wonderfully smooth two-lane blacktop. For hikers, the trails range from 800 feet to 14 miles, easy to difficult, and there are more just beyond the loop.

If you go: Once you start driving the loop, you’ll almost immediately want to pull over because the scenery is so arresting. Don’t. It’s illegal. And the first parking lot, Calico Hills, comes up soon, followed by about 10 more in 13 miles. Most have restrooms.

I made my visit just before sunset. Early morning would be good too — you get dramatic light and avoid the worst of the heat.

In cooler months (Oct. 1 through May 31), you’ll need to book a timed reservation to drive through between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. In summer, you don’t need a timed reservation, but you’ll still need to pay $20 per car (unless you have a national parks pass).

Black Canyon and Emerald Cave

Groups of kayakers in emerald-green water, surrounded by rocky cliffs.

Driving distance from the Strip: About an hour and 15 minutes.

What makes it great: What if you flooded a red rock canyon and set multitudes of Nevadans and visitors loose on assorted watercraft? Lake Mead National Recreation Area , a 38-mile drive east of Vegas, is the lively answer to that question.

Most of the action is on the lake itself, which was created in 1936 by the construction of Boulder Dam (now Hoover Dam) along the Colorado River. But about 15 miles downriver from the dam, you’ll find Willow Beach and the Black Canyon Water Trail , a great place to kayak.

After a 60-mile drive southeast from the Strip, I was floating with a tour group in gentle waters (no rapids here) at the foot of 1,500-foot cliffs.

“Let’s go to Arizona,” our guide said — which simply meant paddling from one side of the river to the other.

I had signed on with Blazin’ Paddles , one of several kayak tour companies that paddle out of Willow Beach Marina on the Arizona side. The marina is about 15 miles downriver from the dam. Because it’s part of Lake Mead National Recreation Area, entrance is $25 per car.

There were dozens of kayakers in groups ahead of me, in part because paddling in a shady canyon is a pretty good way to spend a 95-degree day, in part because Instagram has made Emerald Cave a star.

The cave, a 2-mile paddle from Willow Beach, is only about the size of a two-bedroom apartment. But the way its waters glow green makes for great pictures. It’s the centerpiece of most half-day tours, and guides say they’ve fit as many as 23 kayaks in there at a time.

Mountain buttes rise above kayaks floating in the Colorado River

If your excursion is like mine, you’ll run into a traffic jam outside the cave and the wait will be about 45 minutes. Sometimes it’s over an hour, guides say.

But remember, you’ll be in a kayak beneath tall cliffs, keeping an eye out for desert bighorn sheep, possibly engaging in splash skirmishes with fellow paddlers. Life could be worse. And once you’re in the cave, the sight is memorable. If you’ve ever taken a rowboat into the Blue Grotto on the Italian isle of Capri, this cave’s interior will give you déja vù in another hue.

For the record, we wedged 17 kayaks and a canoe into the cave. And on the way back to the marina, we spotted a bald eagle.

Four miles of kayaking, with a cave in the middle and a stop to hop out for a view, is just about perfect for a three-hour excursion. I paid $110. (With shuttle bus service from the Strip, it’s $149.)

If you go : The best time for Emerald Cave photos is said to be midday, when I was there. But if you get there early or late, you’ll have less company.

There’s a store at Willow Beach Marina that sells snacks, sunblock, hats, water shoes, dry bags and boating and fishing supplies; open 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily in summer. There’s also a restaurant, Black Canyon Grill, open daily for lunch in summer; open Fridays to Sundays for most of March, April, May, September and October; and closed November to February.

You can also take a quick, free look at Hoover Dam (22 miles from Willow Beach) by parking in a free lot on the Arizona side of the river (parking is $10 on the Nevada side) and walking across the dam. Entry to the Visitor Center exhibits and observation deck is $10. There are also guided dam tours available, first come, first served. Boulder City , 6.5 miles from the dam, has several restaurants and antique shops.

Valley of Fire State Park

People appear tiny as they walk among reddish-orange boulders and dunes

Driving distance from the Strip: About 55 minutes.

What makes it great: Even after I saw Red Rock Canyon, I didn’t fully understand how easily outback Nevada can pass for outback Utah. The Valley of Fire — about 55 miles northeast of the Strip — educated me further.

It also lured me into a few furnace-hot gullies and showed me miles of red sandstone, gray limestone, slot canyons and crazy-shaped boulders, all scattered on a desert floor that long ago was an ocean floor. Some boulders are decorated with petroglyphs older than all of our leading presidential candidates put together.

More specifically, because I read some signs, I can tell you that the petroglyphs are more than 2,000 years old, and also that a petroglyph is cut into stone; a pictograph is painted on stone.

People hike on red rocks at Valley of Fire State Park

(Christopher Reynolds / Los Angeles Times)

Valley of Fire, Nevada’s first state park, has one through road, two campgrounds and several rock-climbing spots. But keep this place’s name in mind. It gets so hot (up to 120 degrees) that from May 15 to Sept. 30 this year, rangers have closed all trails longer than 1 mile.

Sticking within that limit, I wandered among the Beehives rock formations near the park’s western entrance and climbed the stairs to Atlatl Rock (where an ancient inscribed hand seems to be giving the finger to all who pass). I also walked the 0.7-mile Mouse’s Tank Trail and 1-mile Rainbow Vista trail, but it was close to 100 degrees, and the sandy path may give you that swimming-in-syrup sensation.

If you go: Park entrance is $10 per vehicle ($15 for out-of-state vehicles). The rangers’ 1-mile limit means that until October, nobody can hike the Fire Wave, Seven Wonders Loop or the White Domes Loop.

Still, it’s a thrill to follow White Domes Road north from the visitor center as it twists and squeezes between boulders.

The Moapa Valley town of Overton, 9 miles north of the park’s eastern entrance, is home to the Lost City Museum , created in the 1930s to showcase Native artifacts that long predate the creation of Lake Mead. On Overton’s Main Street, the Inside Scoop cafe has ice cream and makes a topnotch $8 tuna salad sandwich.

Aviators baseball in Las Vegas Ballpark

Las Vegas Ballpark, home to the minor-league Las Vegas Aviators.

Driving distance from the Strip: About 25 minutes.

What makes it great: Strictly speaking, the Las Vegas Ballpark isn’t a full day trip, but this may be the most family-friendly of these excursions, so it needs to be here.

The ballpark, home to the AAA Aviators baseball team, stands in the Vegas suburb of Summerlin, about 15 miles from the Strip. You could spend all day in a casino and still make 7 p.m. game time. (Or you could head for the ballpark after exploring Red Rock Canyon, which is practically next door.)

Whenever you arrive, your blood pressure is likely to ease once you step in. It’s a gorgeous ballpark, completed in 2019 with a capacity of just 10,000, so it feels intimate. You can spread a blanket on the grassy berm overlooking right field, and there’s a good chance a local 15-year-old will be singing the national anthem.

But there’s also a bright, high-resolution scoreboard, a swimming pool beyond center field (yes, that costs extra) and food options that include tri-tip sandwiches and avocado chicken burritos.

A worker squirt salsa on a burrito-in-the-making at Las Vegas Ballpark

You can count on silly games between innings (including a cardboard airplane-throwing contest), brand ambassadors handing out merch and kids scrambling for foul balls. Beers start at $10, hot dogs at $6.50. (And there are cocktails, because Las Vegas.)

On the night I came, attendance was 5,042 people and 99 dogs (because it was bring-your-dog night).

Unless you’re a devotee of the El Paso Chihuahuas, Salt Lake Bees or Reno Aces, you won’t recognize any of these hopeful young players. But that will hardly matter — especially if (as I witnessed) the center fielder makes a leaping grab to save a 9-7 win for the home team.

If you go: Tickets start at $14 (for a spot on the berm in right field), but if you buy online in advance, the middleman fees will push that to about $20.

Las Vegas, a Dodgers farm team from 2001-08, is now a farm team for the Oakland Athletics. It’s a tad awkward that the Athletics have announced that they’ll be moving to Las Vegas in a few years. But for now, the Aviators are here and you can be too.

There are no slot machines in the ballpark and no sports betting area. In fact, the only casino with a prominent ad posted is nearby Red Rock Resort.

You can check the schedule to see when the Aviators are playing at home. The season runs through Sept. 22, and the AAA national championship game will be in the ballpark on Sept. 28.

Where to find LAS Priority Pass lounges

What to expect inside the las priority pass lounges, accessing priority pass lounges in las vegas, other las vegas airport lounges to know.

The Priority Pass airport lounge program allows members access to over 1,500 airport lounges and restaurants worldwide. Two of those Priority Pass locations are at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas.

The airport has two separate terminal buildings, Terminal 1 and Terminal 3. There’s one Priority Pass lounge in each terminal, and you can move between the two terminals post-security by tram if you want.

The Club , which runs nearly two dozen airports around the U.S. (as well as a few in the U.K.) operates both lounges.

Whether you’ve got a flight delay, a long layover or just need to kill time before your flight, these two Priority Pass lounges in Las Vegas can be a nice place to hang out. There, you’ll find complimentary refreshments and a comfier seat than you’d likely find in the general terminal.

Here's a guide to those two LAS Priority Pass lounges.

The Club LAS, Terminal 1 (near Gate D33): This lounge is located after security on Level 2 of Terminal 1 near Gate D33.

You can also get to this lounge from Terminal 3, though you’ll have to first hop on the Red Line train. Budget 15-20 minutes of commute time (one-way) if you’re coming from Terminal 3.

The Club LAS, Terminal 3 (across from Gate E2): This lounge is located after security in Terminal 3 by Gate E2.

Just as you’d ride the Red Line train to get from Terminal 3 to Terminal 1, you’d board the same train in the opposite direction to get to this lounge from Terminal 1. Again, account for that same commute time.

Though both lounges are open most of the day, they do shut down for a few hours overnight, so you can’t spend the whole night in them. See the current LAS Priority Pass lounge hours here .

Since The Club runs both Priority Pass lounges, expect similar quality furnishings, snacks and other amenities. Here’s a look inside the Terminal 1 version of the lounge:

Food at The Club is a mix of self-service buffet and made-to-order dishes. All the food inside is complimentary.

To order, you scan a QR code at your table or counter seat, which takes you to a website where you can choose from a variety of menu items. Choose as many dishes as you want — and order as many times as you want.

Portion sizes are relatively small, so count on ordering at least a few plates if you’re seeking a full meal. Menu items include chicken tacos, soup, breaded cauliflower and a protein bowl.

Besides the made-to-order items, you can access a self-service buffet anytime.

There, you’ll find tea and an espresso maker that whips up coffee beverages, including lattes and mochas.

There’s also a salad bar and fruit.

The seating is varied, providing options for your lounge activity of choice — whether that’s snoozing, dining or getting work done. One room, which is separated from the food, features couches and chairs with footrests that might accommodate a more comfortable nap.

Counter seating makes it possible to get work done. There are a good number of power outlets. Plus, Wi-Fi is free.

There’s a good amount of seating, but this lounge can sometimes get packed. Occasionally, there’s even a waitlist to get in.

» Learn more: Are Priority Pass lounges usually crowded?

You could theoretically get in to both Las Vegas Priority Pass locations in a single day, and you could bring a friend. Here’s what you need to know about admission and guest policies.

How to get in to the LAS Priority Pass lounges

Many people access these two lounges by purchasing Priority Pass membership, which typically costs from $99 to $469 a year. That said, you can score complimentary membership through many premium travel credit cards .

The best credit cards with Priority Pass access include the Chase Sapphire Reserve® card, the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card and the U.S. Bank Altitude® Connect Visa Signature® Card , though there are many others, too.

Both LAS Priority Pass lounges are located airside (past the security checkpoint); you’ll need your membership, a same-day boarding pass and a valid ID to get past security and in to a lounge.

Can I bring a friend?

Children under age two are admitted free. For everyone else, the ability to bring a guest depends on the terms of your Priority Pass membership.

Membership: If you purchased membership through Priority Pass, you’ll typically need to pay $35 to bring a guest with you.

Card perks: If you have membership through a credit card, you might be able to bring a guest or two for free. For example, Chase Sapphire Reserve® members can bring up to two guests for free. Check the terms of your credit card so see if guests are included.

Day passes: Anyone can purchase a day pass for either of the two lounges, which typically costs $50. With a day pass, you can enter up to three hours before your scheduled flight departure.

The Club LAS lounges aren’t the only lounges at the Las Vegas airport. And in fact, they’re far from the best.

Other Las Vegas airport lounges include the American Express Centurion Lounge and the United Club Lounge . Both win out on nearly every metric — including higher-quality food and superior aesthetics. And soon-to-open lounges include a Chase Sapphire Lounge and Capital One Lounge . Based on the versions of those lounges in other airports, those will likely surpass The Club lounges in Las Vegas, too.

But The Club lounges rank among the easiest to get in to — especially if you have a credit card that offers Priority Pass.

Travel credit cards can offer all sorts of value, ranging from the ability to earn bonus points to travel insurance coverage for purchases made on the card. And given the complimentary food and drinks you can nosh on at Priority Pass lounges like these, premium travel credit cards can make waiting in airports just a little bit better.
