Johor Bahru to Singapore: The best of both worlds on a budget!

Travelling from Johor Bahru to Singapore

There are several ways of getting from Johor Bahru to Singapore, however we opted to take the public bus since it’s the cheapest mode of transport. The bus departs from the main terminal hub in Johor Bahru (J B Sentral) and arrives at Woodlands CIQ in Singapore.

In order to cross the Malaysia/Singapore border, we had to go through two immigration checkpoints – one at Johor Bahru Sentral in Malaysia and another at Woodlands CIQ in Singapore. They are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Here’s the steps we took…

(1) Getting to Johor Bahru Sentral

For us, Johor Bahru Sentral was just about in walking distance, but the cheapest and easiest way to get to Johor Bahru Sentral for most people will be by using the app Grab Taxi . Simply book a car online which arrives within minutes and pay your driver in cash. A 10 minute journey shouldn’t cost more than around 5 ringgit, which is significantly cheaper than the standard metered taxis.

(2) Arriving at Johor Bahru Sentral

We arrived at Johor Bahru Sentral in the early hours of the morning, 5am. The station was already very busy so we quickly made our way to the immigration checkpoint which is about a 10 minute walk. We didn’t really know where we were going, so just followed the crowds.

Don’t forget your passport! – Since you are crossing the border into another country, you will need your passport. This is required when travelling to and from Johor Bahru to Singapore.

(3) Passing Johor Bahru Sentral Checkpoint

It was a little bit of a shock seeing so many rows of long queues at the Johor Bahru Sentral Checkpoint. However there were a lot of counters available and the checkpoints were well organised.

Johor Bahru Sentral Immigration checkpoint

After about 40 minutes of queuing, we were through the first immigration checkpoint and made our way to the bus terminal at Johor Bahru Sentral.

Leave yourself plenty of time! – It is a well known fact that the entire process of crossing the border can take up to two hours – not because of distance, but due to the sheer volume of people travelling.

(4) Getting to Johor Bahru Sentral bus terminal

Once you have passed the first immigration checkpoint in Malaysia at Johor Bahru Sentral, you will reach the bus terminal.

The bus costs SGD $1.30 – $1.80 for a single journey. There are various routes to choose from which take you to different bus interchanges and MRT stations, but don’t get too hung up on the details – They all go to Singapore.

(5) Getting to Woodlands CIQ

The bus we chose was packed so we had to stand up, but the journey over the bridge took no more than 30 minutes (although traffic is back to back) and we were dropped at the Woodlands CIQ Immigration checkpoint.

(6) Arriving at Woodlands CIQ

We arrived at Woodlands CIQ and made our way to the second and final immigration checkpoint of our journey. The queues here were shorter than the first immigration checkpoint in Johor Bahru. This checkpoint only took about 30 minutes to complete.

Once through Singapore immigration we walked about 10mins to the Woodlands MRT Station

Top tip – Bring Singapore Dollars with you! We weren’t able to buy a train or bus ticket with our Malaysian Ringgit and had to find a cash machine

The MRT trains will take you pretty much anywhere you’d want to go in Singapore. We recommend buying an EZ Link contactless travel card which is the simplest way to get around. It can be used on MRT, LRT trains and buses – This includes your return journey back to JB.

(7) Arriving in Singapore

Singapore is an incredibly easy place to navigate. The MRT is clean, efficient, air conditioned and fast! All signs and announcements are in English so it’s near impossible to get lost. And if you do, just ask someone! We found everyone to be incredibly helpful and friendly.

(8) One day in Singapore

In between organising a visa application, we took in the sights and sounds of the city such as dining at delicious Hawker Centres, visiting the beautiful Botanical Gardens , strolling around Clarkes Quay and Fort Canning Park.

Singapore is also a great place to pick up cheap electronics. After spending much of our time in remote places , this little trip gave us an opportunity to stock up on a few necessary items ahead of our future travels.

(9) Singapore to Johor Bahru

The return journey from Singapore to Johor Bahru is exactly the same process. The Woodlands Bus Terminal was slightly more complicated to navigate, so look out for the guys in orange high vis jackets – they will help point you in the right direction and make sure you get on the correct bus.

We left the city at around 6.30pm which was the rush hour peak, so the queues through immigration at Woodlands CIQ were particularly long. All in all, the journey back took about 2 hours.

Benefits of staying in Johor Bahru

Much cheaper accommodation.

Johor Bahru Old Town

Hotels on offer in Johor Bahru were significantly cheaper and better value than anything we could find in Singapore. We stayed at the Baguss Hotel & Serviced Apartments and paid 55 ringgit per night. This included an ample breakfast, AC, WiFi and an extremely well equipped, large and comfortable room. Perfect for a week-long stay!

A word of warning – the Malaysian Government have recently laid on a new tourism tax for hoteliers and ask 10 ringgit extra per night on top of what you have paid for the room. We found this out the hard way at check-in. Make sure you read the (very) small print when booking online and be prepared to pay in cash on arrival.

Great food, cheap prices

Roti Canai E & Y restaurant Johor Bahru

Although Singapore is known for its famous Hawker Centres, we’d heard that Johor Bahru also offered a thriving food scene . As soon as we arrived, this was evident and we were super excited to get stuck in!

Right around the corner from our hotel was a street packed full of mouth-watering local restaurants serving up a mixture of Indian and Chinese cuisine. With huge tandoors on the street plus Roti Canai and Tandoori Chicken to die for, we could have happily eaten here every day. Prices were extremely affordable at no more than 7-10 ringgit for two persons, including a delicious Kopi Cham (iced tea and coffee mix) which is a must-try when in Malaysia!

Less tourists, cheaper prices

Johor Bahru (often referred to as JB) isn’t exactly on the typical tourist radar. Many people choose to live in JB but commute across the border daily to work or study.

Singaporeans on the other hand, are regular weekend visitors to Johor Bahru as they hop across to enjoy lower cost fuel, food and shopping. So overall, JB is a much cheaper alternative to Singapore.

The entire experience of travelling from Johor Bahru to Singapore was stress free, interesting and relatively straightforward. If you want or need to go to Singapore but are travelling on a strict budget, then we highly recommend this process.

The Marina Bay Sands Hotel Singapore

There are regular flights to Johor Bahru from all across SE Asia. If you don’t wish to break the bank, Johor Bahru is a great alternative to staying in Singapore itself.

Have you crossed the border from Johor Bahru to Singapore? Do you have any budget travel tips for Johor Bahru to Singapore? We’d love to hear your suggestions in the comments below 🙂

Thank you for the details. We are strongly considering JB as an option, especially since I’m not sure how many of our 3 days we will actually do much sightseeing. Honestly, we kind of like to just get a feel for a new place and not really hit all of the sightseeing spots. Therefore, I could see JB working out well for us.

JB is a great place for eating and relaxing, have a great trip and thanks for your comment – Nick

May I know how many days did you do this commute of staying in JB and day tripping to Singapore? Did you encounter any problems at the immigration for doing it? I am planning to do it 2 days in a row and wondering if this would be a problem. Thank you.

Hi Elisabeth, it may depend on your nationality. We have British passports and did not encounter any problems although we only did one day trip from JB to Singapore. Hope your visit runs smoothly – Nick

Hi! Me and my family ate staying here at JB. We are a Filipino citizen. We’ve been to Singapore last 2 months ago. And now we travel here at JB. But my concern is the connecting flight go back to my country. I want to book a flight going back to my country in Singapore. Is it possible?

Hi Kathy, thanks for your comment! Since we are not personally Filipino citizens I would advise you to check this directly with your countries embassy – Nick

Hi so we are a family of 5 and are seriously looking at staying in JB and travelling every day to Singapore as the accommodation is so much cheaper. Is the really as simple as it sounds, we are AUS and NZ passport holders. Are the times to anf from singapore pretty flexible

Hi Melissa,

We found the journey into and back from Singapore very simple and we did it during rush hour.

It will add a few hours onto your day, however we think the savings more than made up for this. We also really enjoyed the experience of exploring Singapore during the day and eating out in JB at night.

Hope this helps – Nick

Hello Nick, I keep getting conflicting reports of how difficult it is to cross the border from JB to Singapore. i will be staying just next to the JB Sentral and would like to know if i should expect delays or issues with me and of my family members. all with U.S passports. we will be traveling at the beginning of December….it seems that i cannot book any trains online, while most stories of waiting for the bus describe up to a 4 hour wait time. and i havent found much info on taxis. we plan on visiting singapore primarily and only staying in JB. thanks for any info.

–Corrie

Hi Corrie, thanks for commenting! Personally we’ve only ever taken the bus across the border, and we found the whole process relatively straightforward. We travelled both ways during rush hour, which took approximately 2 hours door to door. There were plenty of buses available and we were able to get on one right away. The longest part was queuing to get through the immigration checkpoint at JB (which took about 40minutes). Hope this gives you a clearer idea of what to expect and good luck with your journey! All the best, Nick

Hi i wish to travel to singapore first and to malaysia. So is it possible to stay in johar bahru. Is it easy to travel everyday to singapore to explore singapore?

Hi Fakrudeen, yes it’s possible to stay in JB and travel to Singapore. Travelling everyday is definitely doable, however the journey can take up to 2hrs (especially in rush hour) so you should factor that into your trip if you have specific plans in Singapore. Thanks for your comment – Nick

HI do they ask about onward air ticket when entering to Singapore ,

Hi Hassan, from our experience we were not asked for an onward ticket however this may be dependant on your nationality (we are British citizens). It is probably worth checking with your countries embassy just to be on the safe side. Thanks, Nick

can I use ezy link ticket to get to johor bahru is it by bus how much per night to stay in hotel over there compared to Singapore is it only 50 Singapore dollars let me know

Hi Karen, We didn’t use an ezy link ticket on our bus journey to JB as we only purchased these upon arriving into Singapore, however we were able to use them on our way back so it may well be possible. The hotels in Johor Bahru are a lot more budget friendly, we stayed at the Baguss Hotel which cost 55 MYR – only 18 Singapore dollars per night! Good luck with your trip & thanks for commenting.

We are NZ citizens and travelling Nov 2023. We plan to stay in Johor Bahru and commute to Singapore. Our flight is from Singapore back to NZ. Do we need a visa to enter Johor Bahru? Also we plan to hire a rental car. Is this feasible?

Fondly referred to as just JB, the city of Johor Bahru lies right at the southern end of the Malaysian Peninsula. Many will tell you there’s really nothing here for the tourist as JB is more of a transportation and manufacturing hub than anything else, but, if you’re traveling around Malaysia and want to visit Singapore, the chances are, you’ll be starting from JB. You may also prefer to fly out of Singapore’s airport if you’re getting toward the end of your vacation, as there are better connections from here, rather than traveling a long way back into Malaysia. Of course, you could just be visiting Singapore because it’s a cool place to visit! It’s a city of contrasts, where British colonial mixes with the most modern skyscrapers and shopping centers yet there are still wide open spaces with parks, gardens, a zoo and plenty of places to walk.

Options for Travel from Johor Bahru to Singapore

Options for Travel from Johor Bahru to Singapore

Johor Bahru and Singapore are separated by only a short stretch of water, named the Straits of Johor, so in effect, getting from one to the other is very quick and easy. In reality, it’s not quite so quick and easy though, as you have to remember that you’re crossing an international border so you’re going to run into all the complications associated with that. When you look at the entire distance from Johor Bahru to Singapore proper – meaning, right into the heart of Singapore – the travel distance is still only about 23 kilometers (14 miles), so distance-wise it’s not a lot. Aside from taking a taxi (which would have to be a specially licensed one by the way), the two most popular ways to travel from Johor Bahru to Singapore are by train and by bus, and we’ll give you all the facts on both of these options.

Johor Bahru to Singapore by Bus

can i stay in johor bahru and travel to singapore

With the frequency and number of buses connecting Johor Bahru to Singapore increasing, traveling by bus has become a popular way to get between these two destinations. But, in all honesty, there is not much to separate buses from trains as they are very similarly priced. Trains actually cost a little less than the buses, but when we’re talking about such affordable prices anyway, a dollar here or there is not going to make too much difference!

So, what are the buses from Johor Bahru to Singapore like? Well, there are several different types. Express buses are going to cost you considerably more but could be a good idea if you want to travel to the Woodlands area of Singapore. This is basically the closest part of Singapore to Malaysia, so it’s an area you’ll be traveling through no matter where you want to go. Non-express buses are more plentiful and include public buses and private operators, and there are plenty of both. Transtar Cross Border is one example – they operate ample services each day, starting as early as 5am and running as late as 9:15pm. Their buses depart from JB Sentral in Johor Bahru, and they go to Terminal 2 of the Changi Airport in Singapore, so it’s great if you want to go direct to the airport, but not so convenient if you don’t!

The scheduled journey time for these buses is 55 minutes, but in reality it could take several hours. This depends largely on how busy the border crossing is as you can sometimes wait a few hours here, especially during the busiest times which are usually Sunday evenings when going from Johor Bahru to Singapore.

The Transtar Cross Border buses can be booked online ahead of time, which is great for peace of mind, through the travel website 12Go.asia where you can see all of the scheduled departure times and costs.

Johor Bahru to Singapore by Train

Johor Bahru to Singapore by Train

With there not being much difference in the price of tickets between buses and trains from Johor Bahru to Singapore, you may be wondering whether there’s any reason to consider going by train. The simple answer is yes! There are actually quite a few advantages to traveling by train from Johor Bahru to Singapore.

KTM, the Malaysian state railway operator, introduced a new shuttle rail service in 2015 in order to take some of the traffic away from the roads and hence away from the Causeway where the busiest border crossing between Johor Bahru to Singapore is located. As well as helping to reduce the amount of traffic, it has also sped up the process for tourists and locals to cross into Singapore. This is because you clear customs before you even get onto the train!

This pre-clearance of customs means you get all of the paperwork out of the way in advance, and the whole process is far more streamlined. The gates open 30 minutes prior to the train’s departure time for this purpose, and close 10 minutes before departure.

Once you get on the train, it takes just 5 minutes to travel from Johor Bahru to Woodlands in Singapore so will easily save you time over taking a bus, or driving yourself. Of course, you will only get so far as Woodlands so you will then need to transfer to travel right into the heart of Singapore, but this is easy to do.

There are over a dozen trains from Johor Bahru to Singapore every day, so you have plenty to choose from, but be aware that this has become a very popular way to travel and the trains can get booked up a week or more in advance. For this reason, we strongly recommend that you book your train tickets in advance which you can do online on the travel website 12Go . Their website will show you all the available departures and will allow you to book with instant confirmation.

With the more streamlined process for getting through immigration available on the trains from Johor Bahru to Singapore, this can really save travelers a lot of time over taking the bus. Going by train definitely avoids a lot of the uncertainty as to how long your journey will actually take, which can be a problem if you’re traveling to the airport to catch a flight.

As someone who stays and works in Singapore , I am constantly looking for short getaways to neighboring countries. Since the nearest city from Singapore is Johor Bahru, Malaysia, I found myself frequently cross the border from Singapore to Johor Bahru.

There are many ways you could travel from Singapore to Johor Bahru and vice versa, such as by public bus, private bus, shuttle tebrau train , taxi, private transfer (such as this and this ) or by driving. And nope, there is no flight between Johor Bahru Senai Airport and Singapore Changi Airport .

In this post, I’ll share with you about how to go from Singapore to Johor Bahru by public bus , as well as how to travel back from Johor Bahru to Singapore by bus.

Here is the summary procedure on how to travel from Singapore to JB by public bus.

  • Determine your destination in JB
  • Determine which bus can bring you closest to your destination
  • On the day of travel, take one of the public buses listed in this article
  • When arriving at Singapore’s checkpoint, alight from the bus and go to immigration
  • Upon clearing SG immigration, go down the escalator, walk to bus stop and take bus to JB
  • When arriving at Johor Bahru’s checkpoint, alight from the bus and go to immigration
  • Upon clearing JB’s immigration, either go to bus stop and take another bus to your destination or simply walk out of the custom and head to your next destination

Fill Up Arrival Cards Before Crossing the Border

Before Entering Singapore

Within 3 days before entering Singapore by land, foreign visitors need to fill up Singapore Arrival Card (SGAC) . SGAC is exempted for Singapore Singapore Citizens, Permanent Residents and Pass Holders entering Singapore by land.

When is the Best Time to Cross the Border?

Generally, the border is at its busiest when:

  • Malaysians are crossing the border to go to work in Singapore
  • Malaysians are crossing the border to go back home to Malaysia after work
  • People from Singapore are crossing border to Malaysia to spend their holidays

Usually, the peak timings for non-holiday period are as follow: SG to JB direction : Friday night, Saturday morning and Saturday noon JB to SG direction : Sunday after 3pm, and Monday morning

During holiday period or long weekend , the peak timing will be: SG to JB direction : the eve of holiday, and the morning of holiday JB to SG direction : the last day of holiday, and the morning of the day after holiday

Understanding 2 Border Checkpoints

There are 2 Border Checkpoints between Singapore and Johor Bahru. The main and older one is SG Woodlands CIQ & JB CIQ; this is also commonly referred as “ First Link .”  The building name for JB checkpoint is “Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI).” For simplicity, I will use the terms Woodlands Checkpoint and JB CIQ .

The second and newer one is SG Tuas CIQ, and JB Second Link CIQ; this is commonly referred as “ Second Link ” or “Tuas.” The building name for JB Second Link checkpoint is “Sultan Abu Bakar.” For simplicity, I will use the term Tuas Checkpoint and JB Second Link CIQ .

Both checkpoints are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Which border and which bus you should choose? To answer this, you need to consider your final destination in JB.

If you are planning for shopping, cafe hopping, food hunting, mall hanging out, you may choose to go to JB CIQ via First Link. From JB CIQ Custom, you can literally walk to Johor Bahru City Square, Komtar JBCC, JB Sentral Bus Terminal, Jalan Wong Ah Fook, and Jalan Dhoby.

If you are planning to go to Larkin Terminal to take other buses to continue to other parts of Malaysia, you may choose either First Link or Second Link.

If you are going to other parts of JB that are near Second Link (such as Legoland, Johor Premium Outlet, Bukit Indah, Iskandar Puteri), you may choose Second Link.

The table below shows a list of frequently-visited places in Johor Bahru and the recommended border to choose. It doesn’t mean that these destinations have direct bus from Singapore, some destination requires you to change to another bus.

Woodlands Checkpoint

Which Border has Less Traffic?

The traffic tends to be heavier at Woodlands, but during peak period such as Public Holiday, both borders are equally heavy.

Even though first link is usually more congested, it doesn’t mean that I will choose second link over first link all the time. It depends on where I’m going to in JB.

What I usually do before crossing the border is checking the traffic cameras at both checkpoints and checking Google Maps for estimated traffic condition.

The traffic cameras are updated every minute so it’s pretty accurate. If you see a traffic jam, do investigate whether it’s traffic jam on car lanes or bus lanes. Sometimes, the car lanes may have heavy traffic but the bus lane is literally empty.

What traffic cameras can’t show you is the traffic condition at JB Checkpoint, because these cameras are installed by Singapore side, not Malaysia. So, if you see a clear bridge, don’t be too happy first. Instead, check the traffic condition at Google Maps, maybe there’s a traffic jam at Malaysia side.

How to check traffic condition in Google Maps? Choose “traffic” function in Google Maps. On mobile, it’s located at top right corner, under the search bar, within the drop-down menu. On desktop, it’s within the drop-down menu located at top left corner.

The traffic function will show you traffic condition in colors. Dark red means extremely heavy. But again, heavy traffic refers to car traffic, not bus traffic. There’s a lot of guestimate when trying to predict bus traffic.

How to pay for the bus fare?

Public bus fare can be paid using EZ-Link, ManjaLink (only Causeway buses) or by cash. If you pay bus fare by cash, please pay with exact money because no change will be given. After paying cash, you will then be given a ticket that you must keep throughout the journey until you reach your destination.

If you don’t have exact cash, for Causeway (CW) buses, you have the option to pay at the counters which are usually available at every starting point of CW buses’ routes. However, for other buses, there are no counters, hence no change will be given.

What is the travel duration?

The travel duration from Singapore to JB depends greatly on traffic condition. It could take 1 hour during off-peak (weekdays afternoon), but it could take as much as 4 hours during peak period (such as the eve of a long weekend or eve of a Public Holiday).

Most of the time, it takes me about 2 hours to cross the border in the evening or on the weekend.

Since it’s difficult to estimate the exact travel duration, it’s better to allow more buffer for the journey, especially if you need to catch another bus or flight from Johor Bahru to other cities.

Can you walk across the border of Singapore and Malaysia?

Some people do walk across the border between Woodlands Checkpoint and JB CIQ Checkpoint on rare occasions, such as when the traffic jam is too horrible and they are at risk of arriving late at their workplace. However, please do not walk because it is extremely dangerous; there is no pedestrian footpath and the vehicles don’t give way to pedestrian.

And, nobody walks across the border between Tuas Checkpoint and JB Second Link Checkpoint. Curious why? The distance between the two checkpoints is 5km! Similar to first link, there’s no pedestrian footpath and vehicles don’t give way to pedestrian. So, for safety reason, please wait patiently for the bus no matter how urgently you need to get to your destination.

List of Buses from Singapore to Johor Bahru

In summary, here’s the list of buses you can take to travel from Singapore to Johor Bahru:

  • From Kranji MRT: Bus 170X, CW1
  • Direct: Bus 950
  • Indirect: Bus 856, 903, 911, 911T, 912, 912B
  • From Queen Street Terminal: Bus 170, CW2, SJE
  • From Jurong East Interchange: Bus 160, CW3, CW4, CW4S
  • From Newton Food Centre: Bus CW5
  • From Boon Lay MRT: Bus CW6
  • From Changi Airport Terminal 1: Bus TS1
  • From Resort World Sentosa: Bus TS8
  • From Yishun Bus Interchange: Bus AC7
  • From Marina Square: Bus TS3
  • From Buona Vista: Bus TS6
  • From Tuas Link MRT: Bus CW7

TL;DR: If you’re paralyzed with too many choices and you don’t know which one to choose, just take 170X or CW1 from Kranji MRT. Even though the queue might be long during peak-period, but they’re quite frequent and the distance to checkpoint is pretty short.

Now, let’s get into the details!

1. From Kranji MRT Station

At Kranji MRT Station, take exit C to the bus stop. Money changer with reasonable rates is available here, as well as a food court. On weekends, expect huge crowd so leave your house early.

Location of Kranji MRT on Google Maps: https://goo.gl/maps/q4FY7AB3AkTQm5vRA

Bus 170x, cw1 from kranji singapore to johor bahru

From Kranji MRT, there are 2 buses you can take:

1. SBS Bus 170X (formerly called SBS Bus 170 blue plate) Fare: Approx S$1.55 by EZ-Link card; or S$2.30 by cash Note : For SBS bus, you need to tap every time you board & alight Route: https://www.transitlink.com.sg/eservice/eguide/service_route.php?service=170X Operating Hour from Kranji: 5.36am to 11.30pm Operating Hour from JB Sentral: 6.10am to 12 midnight

SBS Bus 170X will bring you to Johor Bahru via Woodlands Checkpoint (First Link). The last station for Bus 170X is JB Sentral Bus Terminal, which is within walking distance from JB CIQ. So, usually after clearing the immigration at JB, nobody takes bus 170x anymore because people who are going to JB Sentral simply walk from the CIQ.

For information, there are 2 types of SBS Bus 170: red plate and blue plate. Blue plate (or 170X) leaves from Kranji and ends at JB Sentral Bus Terminal with only a few stops in between. Meanwhile, Red plate (bus 170) leaves from Queen Street Terminal (see point #3 below) and ends at Larkin Terminal with many bus stops in between (not recommended due to long journey).

2. Causeway Link Bus CW1 Fare from Kranji: S$2.60 by cash, ManjaLink* or Visa** Fare from Larkin/JB CIQ : RM2.60 by ManjaLink* or Visa** Note : For CW bus, only tap your card when boarding/re-boarding, DON’T tap when alighting. CW1 Route: https://www.causewaylink.com.my/routes-schedules/?view=route&no=CW1 Route of ALL CW buses: https://www.causewaylink.com.my/singapore-bus Operating Hour from Kranji: 6.00am to 11.30pm Operating Hour from JB CIQ: 4.00am to 10.30pm Operating Hour from Larkin: 6.00am to 10.00pm

Bus CW1 only have 3 stops: Kranji MRT Station, SG Woodlands Checkpoint, JB CIQ. If you want to continue to Larkin Terminal, you need to take connecting bus CWL from JB CIQ.

*About ManjaLink : ManjaLink is a bus card issued by Causeway Link. It can be used on any Causeway Link buses (cross-border or local bus). You can purchase it online or from CW counters .

**About Visa : You can pay your CW1, CW2, CW5 and CWL bus rides with Visa credit card or debit card. Do ensure that your Visa card is contactless enabled and issued by an authorized bank/financial institution regardless the country of issuance. Details here .

My personal favorite way to go to JB is to taking SBS Bus 170X from Kranji because there are only 5 bus stops from Kranji MRT to Woodlands Checkpoint, the frequency of bus is quite high (intervals up to 9 mins during peak period, and up to 17 mins during off-peak period).

Furthermore, since I take MRT from my house to Kranji and I use EZ-Link, I can qualify for transfer fare if I take an SBS/SMRT bus after alighting from MRT. I’ll pay discounted fare if transfer is done within 45 mins.

However, I would choose CW1 when there is a long queue for 170X but there is little or no queue for CW1.

2. From Woodlands Bus Interchange (Walkable distance from Woodlands MRT Station)

2a. From Woodlands Temporary Bus Interchange

Woodlands Temporary Bus Interchange ( location on Google Map ) is an outdoor bus interchange, which is just a short walking distance from Woodlands MRT Station.

From Woodlands Temporary Bus Interchange, there’s 1 bus that you can take directly to Woodlands Checkpoints, which is the SMRT Bus 950 . Here are the details:

Bus 950 Fare: Approx S$1.25 by EZ-Link card; or S$1.90 by cash Route: https://www.transitlink.com.sg/eservice/eguide/service_route.php?service=950 Operating Hour: 5.30am to 11.30pm.

SMRT Bus 950 will bring you to Johor Bahru via Woodlands Checkpoint (First Link). It has many stops, but not too many. Here are the important stops of Bus 950: Woodlands Bus Interchange – 5 other stops – Woodlands Checkpoint – JB CIQ – JB Sentral Bus Terminal – JB CIQ – Woodlands Checkpoint – 7 other stops – Woodlands Bus Interchange.

Woodlands Temporary Bus Interchange

SMRT bus 950 is my 2nd personal favorite (after 170X) because it is nearer to where I stay, and because I have options to take other buses if SMRT Bus 950 has long queue and I’m in a rush, especially during peak period (weekend or evening).

Wait, but you said there’s only 1 bus from Woodlands??

Yes there’s only 1 direct bus to the Checkpoint. BUT, there are a few other buses that go to Woodlands Train Checkpoints. From the Train Checkpoints, it is about 10 minutes walk to Woodlands Checkpoint. So, it’s a good alternative if you don’t mind a lot of walking. Read section 2b below.

2b. From Woodlands Bus Interchange

Woodlands Bus Interchange is an indoor bus interchange located at the basement of Woodlands Integrated Transport Hub. To get there from Woodlands MRT, just follow the signs to Bus Interchange, the walk should take less than 10 minutes.

Here are the buses that goes to Train Checkpoint:

  • Take Bus 856  (Berth 11) and alight 6 stops later at W’lands Train Checkpoint. In my opinion, this is the best bus to take.
  • Take Bus 903  (Berth 4) and alight 10 stops later at W’lands Train Checkpoint.
  • Take Bus 911 or 911T (Berth 12) and alight 6 stops later at W’lands Train Checkpoint. Do note that you need to take the one that goes to West Loop at Berth 12, not East Loop. You can ask the driver to confirm if he goes to Train Checkpoint.
  • Take Bus 912 or 912B  (Berth 12) and alight 11 stops later at W’lands Train Checkpoint. Do note that you need to take the one that goes to West Loop at Berth 12, not East. It’s quite confusing to figure out which is which, so it’s best to ask the driver if he goes to Train Checkpoint.  Not recommended.

Remember, after alighting, make your way to the Woodlands Train Checkpoint building. Enter the Woodlands Train Checkpoint building, go up and follow the direction towards Woodlands Checkpoint. There will be some escalator rides and pedestrian bridge involved. No photographs is allowed inside the building, so I can’t show you what it looks like.

When you see a queue at the entrance of Train Station, do not go there. Instead, walk towards the Checkpoint.

List of Buses that Go to Woodlands Train Checkpoint

3. From Queen Street Terminal (Nearest MRT stations: Bugis and Rochor)

Queen Street Terminal is about 15 mins walk from Bugis and Rochor MRT stations. It is located at Queen Street, between Arab Street and Ban San Street.

From Bugis MRT, take exit A or B, walk along Victoria Street until you meet Arab Street, and turn left. From Rochor, take either exit A or B, walk towards Ophir Road, turn left to Rochor Canal Road, then turn right to Ban San Street.

Location of Queen Street Terminal on Google Maps: https://goo.gl/maps/p2MXmrS5jitFm2YK7

There are 3 options of buses from Queen Street Terminal:

1. SBS Bus 170 (formerly called Bus 170 red plate) Fare: Approx S$2.04 by EZ-Link card; or S$ 2.80 by cash. Route: https://www.transitlink.com.sg/eservice/eguide/service_route.php?service=170 Operating Hour from Queen Street Terminal: 5.20am to 00.10am Operating Hour from Larkin Terminal in JB: 5.20am to 00.30am

SBS Bus 170 leaves from Queen Street Terminal and ends at Larkin Terminal with so many bus stops in between, including Rochor Stn, Opp Little India Stn, Newton Stn, Stevens Stn, Botanic Garden Stn, Tan Kah Kee Stn, Sixth Avenue Stn, King Albert Park Stn, Hillview Stn, Opp Bukit Panjang Stn. I do not recommend bus 170 from Queen Street because it stops at too many locations that you are wasting too much time on the road.

2. Causeway Link Bus CW2 (Day Service) Fare from Queen Street: S$4.80 by cash, ManjaLink or Visa Fare from JB CIQ : RM4.80 by cash, ManjaLink or Visa Note : For CW bus, only tap your card when boarding/re-boarding, DON’T tap when alighting CW2 Route: https://www.causewaylink.com.my/routes-schedules/?view=route&no=CW2 Route of ALL CW buses: https://www.causewaylink.com.my/singapore-bus Operating Hour from Queen Street Terminal: 6.30am to 11.30pm Operating Hour from JB CIQ: 4am to 10.30pm Operating Hour from Larkin: 6am to 10.00pm

Bus CW2 (Midnight Service) Fare : same as CW2 Day Service Route : same as CW2 Day Service Operating Hours : 11pm to 4am daily Frequency : 45 minutes, subjected to traffic condition

Bus CW2 has only a total of 3 stops: Queen Street Terminal, Woodlands Checkpoint and JB CIQ. If you want to continue to Larkin Terminal, you need to take connecting bus CWL (only operate 6am to 10pm) from JB CIQ.

Tip for CW2 : if you don’t mind standing on the bus for the entire journey (could take up to 1 hour plus in the evening or weekend), you can skip the long queue and go to the front of the queue. There, wait until the bus is almost full and nobody in the queue boards the bus anymore. Then board the bus.

Yep, most people in the long q will not board if there are no more seats, they don’t want to stand and would rather wait for the next bus, so this is your chance to take the bus without queuing (but you pay the price by having to stand the entire journey).

Do note that if you take CW2, once you got your passport stamp at Woodlands Checkpoint, you could board any CW buses to go to JB Sentral Checkpoint. Just show your ticket to any CW bus driver and they’ll let you in.

3. Singapore-Johore Express Bus / SJE (Fare: S$3.30 by cash)

Bus SJE route is exactly the same as CW2. Seats for SJE bus are more comfortable compared to CW2. As for frequency, it is hard to predict because there isn’t any app that you can use to check the departing schedule for bus SJE and CW.

If I were to choose between CW2 and SJE, I definitely prefer CW2 because at Woodlands Checkpoint, I can continue with any CW buses. With SJE, I have to wait for SJE.

Queen Street Terminal Singapore

4. From Jurong East Bus Interchange (Walkable distance from Jurong East MRT Station)

4a. From Jurong East Interim Bus Interchange

At the new Jurong East Interim Bus Interchange ( Location on Google Maps ), there is 1 bus that goes to JB via Woodlands Checkpoint which is SBS bus 160 . To get here, take Exit B from Jurong East MRT.

1. SBS Bus 160 Fare : Approx S$1.84 by EZ-Link Card; S$ 2.50 by cash Note : For SBS bus, you need to tap every time you board & alight Route : http://www.transitlink.com.sg/eservice/eguide/service_route.php?service=160 Operating Hour from Jurong East Bus Interchange : 5.30am to 12midnight

SBS Bus 160 ends at JB Sentral Terminal. I personally do not recommend you to take bus 160 because it passes through many stops before Woodlands Checkpoint. Meanwhile, CW buses do not have too many stops, but they only go to Second Link, not Woodlands.

Jurong East Exit B to Interim Bus Interchange

4b. From Jurong East Private Bus Pickup/Drop-off Point

At Jurong East Private Bus Pickup/Drop-off Point ( location on Google Map ) ( video on how to get here ), there are 3 buses that go to JB via Tuas Second LinkCheckpoint : CW3 (to Perling Mall), CW4 (to Pontian Bus Terminal), and CW4S (to Sutera Mall).

To be honest, it doesn’t matter which bus you take. All 3 buses will bring you to Tuas Checkpoint and then JB CIQ 2nd Link. After clearing immigration at JB CIQ 2nd Link, you can take connecting buses to go to other parts of JB. See section “ Connecting Bus at JB CIQ 2nd Link ” below.

1. CW3 Fare from Jurong East: S$6 by cash, ManjaLink Fare from Perling Mall : RM6 by cash, ManjaLink Note : For CW bus, only tap your card when boarding/re-boarding, DON’T tap when alighting CW3 Route : https://www.causewaylink.com.my/routes-schedules/?view=route&no=CW3 Route of ALL CW buses: https://www.causewaylink.com.my/singapore-bus Operating Hour from Jurong East: 7.30am to 11.30pm Operating Hour from JB CIQ 2nd Link: 5am to 10.30pm Operating Hour from Perling Mall: 4am to 9.30pm

When to Tap In & Tap Out?

If you’re using EZ-Link, here’s the general rule about taking public bus in Singapore: You need to tap in  every time you board a bus, and you need to tap out every time you alight from a bus. It doesn’t matter whether it’s your final destination or you’re doing a transfer of bus, you have to tap in and tap out every time you enter and exit the bus.

However, if you’re taking CW bus, you only need to tap when boarding the bus. You DON’T need to tap when alighting from the bus.

Here’s a list of when to tap in and tap out:

  • Tap-in when you enter a bus from, for example, Kranji
  • Tap-out when you exit at SG Woodlands checkpoint (if taking CW bus, no need to tap out)
  • Get your passport stamped
  • Queue at bus station below the immigration
  • Tap-in when you enter the bus at Woodlands Checkpoint
  • Tap-out when you arrive at JB CIQ (if taking CW bus, no need to tap out)
  • If you’re going to Larkin Terminal, go to bus station below immigration at JB CIQ. Wait for your bus. Tap in when you enter the bus. When you arrive at Larkin, tap out again (if taking CW bus, no need to tap out).
  • If you’re going to JB Sentral or City Square, just walk and follow the direction

Note: For CW bus, you do not need to tap out when alighting, you only need to tap in when boarding.

At Singapore Woodlands Checkpoint

When you arrive at SG Woodlands Checkpoint, go up the escalator, queue at the counters and get your passport stamped. Once you get out, go down the escalator, make a U-turn and you will find the queue for the bus. If you have taken SBS bus to Woodlands Checkpoint, you may board any SBS buses to go to JB Sentral Checkpoint. Likewise, if you have taken any CW bus to Woodlands Checkpoint, you may board any CW buses to go to JB Sentral Checkpoint. Just observe which bus comes first and go for it 🙂

Bus 160, 170, cw1, cw2 from singapore woodlands checkpoint to johor bahru

At Johor Bahru Checkpoint

When you arrive at JB Sentral Checkpoint, make your way to the counter and get your passport stamped. No immigration card is required to be filled for entry into Malaysia. Once you are done with passport, get out from the counter area and walk straight. You will then have 2 choices: go to the bus stop at Basement and continue to other parts of JB with a bus; or walk to JB Sentral and enjoy your getaway. Just follow the signs along the way.

At SG Tuas Checkpoint & JB Second Link Checkpoint

Crossing  border at Second Link is similar to that at Causeway. Once you get your passport stamped at Tuas Checkpoint, proceed to bus boarding area and board bus to go to JB Second Link Checkpoint. Once your passport is stamped at JB Second Link, proceed to bus boarding area and board the bus that will bring you to your next destination.

How to Cross Border at Midnight?

Before 1 Aug 2022, there was no cross border bus at midnight, hence it was quite a hassle to travel between Singapore and Johor Bahru at midnight. Thankfully, from 1 Aug 2022, you can take CW2 from Queen Street to go to JB, or take CW2 from JB CIQ to go to Singapore.

Bus CW2 (Midnight Service) Fare : S$4.80 from Queen Street; RM4.80 from JB CIQ Payment mode : ManjaLink, Visa card and Cash only; NO EZ-Link/NETS Route : https://www.causewaylink.com.my/routes-schedules/singapore-cross-border-bus/?view=route&no=CW2 Operating Hours : 11pm to 4am daily Frequency : 45 minutes, subjected to traffic condition

Bus CW2 (Midnight Service) has 3 stops: Queen Street Terminal, Woodlands Checkpoint and JB CIQ . You can board the bus from any of the stops.

If your starting point in Singapore is nearer to Woodlands Checkpoint, you can board the bus at Woodlands Checkpoint. But first, you need to make your way to Woodlands Train Checkpoint, walk inside the building towards Woodlands Checkpoint, get through immigration, walk down the escalator and look for the CW2 bus bay.

Personally, I don’t recommend crossing the border between midnight to 5am if it’s not entirely necessary. That’s because the frequency of CW2 buses is too infrequent and you may end up waiting for hours. The 45min frequency is just an estimate, anything can happen especially during manpower crunch period.

If you have a morning flight to catch, it’s quite risky to cross the border with the midnight bus. It’s safer to cross border the night before, or to cross border using taxi or private transfer.

Going to Singapore from JB Larkin Terminal

If you are going to Singapore from Larkin Terminal, you can board SBS Bus 170, SJE bus, CW1, CW2, CW3 to JB Checkpoint; and CW6 to JB Second Link. The fare for CW buses is significantly cheaper if you board in JB compared to SG. Check CW website for more info on the fare.

Since Larkin Terminal is undergoing renovation in 2017 and 2018, the platform for buses is not fix yet. One day, you can find SBS/CW buses in platform D, other days they’re are at other platforms. So, just look around or ask people!

Going to Other Parts of Malaysia from JB Larkin Terminal

From Larkin Terminal, you can board other buses to go to other parts of Malaysia. You can buy the tickets from ticket counters that are located inside the building. DO NOT buy bus ticket from the men who approach you when you walk around Larkin, most of the time they are trying to sell you expensive tickets on buses that have many stopovers.

At the time of writing, there are 2 ticket counter location at Larkin. The first one is the Centralised Ticket Counter. However, now this Centralised counter only sells ticket for CERTAIN bus only. You can find tickets for more buses when you go further inside the building. Follow the arrow that says “tiket kaunter.”

buy bus ticket from larkin station

You can also buy bus ticket online from platforms such as easybook.com or busonlineticket.com. Some bus operators require you to check-in at bus counter to get your seat number. If you come from Singapore to Larkin, you can’t predict what time you arrive at Larkin due to traffic so it’s risky to buy online.

However, for PEAK period (Christmas, New Year, Chinese New Year, National Day, etc), bus tickets will be sold out early, so it’s better to buy online or buy in advance from the counter.

How to Travel from Johor Bahru to Singapore by Bus

To Travel from Johor Bahru to Singapore by bus, simply take any cross-border buses from the following locations.

Not anymore :)

Friday 19th of April 2024

Hi Eva, thanks for detailed post with complete information! I've just started working in Sg, been almost 3 months & still exploring options to travel.

I'm staying near CIQ (10 mins walking) & working near Tai Seng mrt. Waiting bus from Kranji mrt to Woodlands border can take really long during peak hours!

Today I tried to go work by CW1, I tapped (Manjalink) my first ride at CIQ to Woodlands, I believe its charged RM 2.6. After ICA clearance, when I board CW1 again to Kranji, I was being charged again. Am I being double charged?

Tuesday 23rd of April 2024

Hi Keith! Welcome to Singapore, hope you enjoy working here! Yes they require people to tap again when boarding the bus for the second/third time, but you shouldn’t be double charged, are you able to check your Manja app to see how much they deducted?

Thursday 7th of March 2024

I am really glad I found your helpful blog, Eva.

But I have one question, if I want to take CW2 on Sunday morning from Queen Street because I think it's the nearest way from my stays (Sultan Road) to JB Central, do I have to book the ticket online? But I found it really difficult because the web kept saying it's unavailable. Is it possible just to show up at the counter and join the queue? Thanks in advance

Tuesday 12th of March 2024

Hi Hanna, for CW2 it;s not possible to book the ticket online. You can just show up and join the queue :) There will be many buses throughout the day so you will always be able to board one. Take care!

Wednesday 24th of January 2024

Hi I'm abit confused. If I stay in BBatok, which is the best way to go?

Hi, as I said in the TLDR, If you’re paralyzed with too many choices and you don’t know which one to choose, just take 170X or CW1 from Kranji MRT.

Most Commonly Asked Questions About Travelling to Johor from Singapore

can i stay in johor bahru and travel to singapore

“Is the Causeway or Second Link better?” , “What is the best way to enter JB?” , “What else is there to do besides City Square and KSL?”

JB Sentral - Visiting Johor from Singapore

These were some questions that slid into my DMs when news of the land border between Singapore and Malaysia opened up. Loved the attention but was honestly none the wiser to give any sound advice considering a couple of years have passed since I last crossed the border too.

Friends looking at scenery at Skyscape - Visiting Johor from Singapore

Hence, I rounded up some of the most commonly asked questions about travelling to Johor from Singapore, in an attempt to answer them.

And to do that, I needed to go to Johor. So I gathered a few colleagues for a day trip to the +60 to get the answers everyone wanted to know. For this article, I’ll be focusing on travelling to JB via public transport, but drivers can pick up on a few tips too!

1) Is Woodlands Causeway or Tuas Second Link better?

Map of JB from Singapore - Visiting Johor from Singapore

There are two land border crossings between Singapore and Johor — The Woodlands Causeway and the Tuas Second Link.

Restoran Hua Mui in JB - Visiting Johor from Singapore

Choosing which land border is as easy as knowing where your intended areas of visit in Johor are. The Woodlands Causeway leads to the JB Sentral that’s connected to JB City Square , Komtar JBCC , and walking distance to Jalan Tan Hiok Nee, a haven for food lovers.

If you’re visiting Legoland , the Johor Premium Outlet , and around the areas of Bukit Indah, cross via the Tuas Second Link instead.

For us, we crossed the Woodlands Causeway for our day trip outing to JB as we wanted to check out the Johor SkyScape , Mount Austin, and Spring Labs districts.

2) How to enter Johor via Public Transport from Singapore?

Opposite kranji mrt bus stop - Visiting Johor from Singapore

If you’re entering JB via public transport, you have three options — Public buses, Grab buses or the KTM train.

Entering Johor by Bus:

Below are the public buses that run from Singapore to Johor. Passengers can simply tap their EZ-link cards to pay the bus fare of ~S$1.30. The bus fare for CW1 is S$2.60.

Do note that, however, SJE buses only accept cash payments.

We took bus 170 from the Opp. Kranji MRT bus stop and the journey to Woodlands Checkpoint was around 30 minutes long as traffic was heavy. It should take around 15 minutes on a good day.

Bus passengers will have to alight at Woodlands Checkpoint to clear immigration, and reboard the bus to enter Johor.

Entering Johor by Grab Bus:

Alternatively, you can also book a bus on Grab to travel directly to Johor Bahru (JB) CIQ Checkpoint.

Grab Bus App - JB FAQ

Simply head to Grab app and click on the “More” option. Then select the “Travel” category and click on the “Bus & Ferry” option. After you’ve entered your destination, you can choose from a list of pick-up points in Singapore like Changi Airport, Expo MRT, Marsiling MRT and more!

Grab Bus App Slots - JB FAQ

Fares vary from S$3 to S$11 per person depending on how far your pick-up point is from the destination. Also, remember that you’ll still need to alight and clear immigration at Woodlands Checkpoint first before reboarding the bus to enter Johor.

*Pro-tip: Book your tickets early as there are limited seats for various time slots too!

Entering Johor by Train:

Riders on KTM train from Singapore to Johor - Visiting Johor from Singapore

KTM train tickets can be purchased on-site at the KTM counter at both Woodlands CIQ and JB Sentral, or on the KTM website . The ticket costs S$5 from SG to JB and RM5 from JB to SG .

*Pro-tip: Save RM5 by purchasing to and fro tickets separately on the KTM website (RM16 + RM5 instead of RM32 for “return” tickets)

3) Should I take a bus or train to Johor from Singapore?

Kranji bus stop to take public bus into JB - Visiting Johor from Singapore

We’d really recommend taking the train simply because the whole process is a lot more seamless but here are some pros and cons to consider:

Pros of taking a public bus into JB: – Relatively cheaper at only ~S$3 roundtrip instead of RM16 (~S$5) by train – Many buses to take so waiting time is cut down – Buses operate till late

Cons of taking a bus into JB: – Can get very crowded – Journey duration depends on traffic conditions – Having to get off at Woodlands Checkpoint for immigration clearance

Commuters on KTM train from Singapore to Johor - Visiting Johor from Singapore

Pros of taking the KTM train: – No traffic congestion – Trains are air-conditioned – Journey is only 5-mins long – You clear both SG and MY immigration at Woodlands CIQ before boarding the train

Cons of taking KTM train: – Tickets sell out early (we recommend purchasing at least a week in advance) – Woodlands CIQ is not located next to an MRT station, so you’ll need to either take a bus from Marsiling MRT station or walk 1.5km – Costs more than taking a bus

3) How to use the e-gates at JB customs?

MDAC Card - JB Custom E-gate

Honestly, it’s about time! To speed up the immigration process, Singaporeans can now finally use the e-gates when crossing the Causeway. Just ensure that your passport has at least 3 months of validity and submit a Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) three days before entering the country.

If it’s your first time, you’d still have to head to the manual immigration counter and inform the officer that you wish to use the e-gate. After registering your information in the system, you’ll be able to use the e-gate on subsequent trips to Malaysia!

4) How can I get around Johor if I’m not driving in?

Tourists walking down streets of JB - Visiting Johor from Singapore

If your agenda is only JB City Square Mall and the surrounding streets, walking is a great and efficient way to get around. However, for further distances such as KSL City Mall, Mount Austin and Spring Labs, your best travel buddy will be Grab — you can use your existing Singapore account!

Short distances such as one from JB City Square Mall to KSL City Mall cost around RM5 – 10 (~S$1.50 – 3), while longer distances from JB Sental to Austin Heights cost around RM30 (~S$10).

5) What else besides JB City Square and KSL City Mall?

SkyScape JB - Visiting Johor from Singapore

Johor isn’t just a place for cheap grocery runs. If you’re looking for things to do beyond just the malls, we’ve got some suggestions!

6) Are cashless options widely available in Johor for travellers from Singapore?

Monday Night Market in JB - Visiting Johor from Singapore

Yes, cashless options are available at shopping malls, cafes and most restaurants, but cash is still king for roadside stalls and street food.

Food stall at the Monday Night Market JB - Visiting Johor from Singapore

Apart from bringing cash, we’d recommend using multi-currency travel cards such as YouTrip or Revolut to save on currency conversion fees charged by credit card companies.

Based on our experience, Grab rides are also slightly more expensive if you pay via the app itself due to the conversion rate. The difference, however, is negligible at a few cents per ride.

7) Do I need to prove my vaccination status?

User showing the Mysejahtera app - Visiting Johor from Singapore

Nope, we weren’t asked for it during immigration or when entering malls in Johor!

Girl Eat World

A girl's adventure in food and travel around the world, how to go to johor bahru by bus from singapore.

Johor Bahru is the closest Malaysian city to Singapore. In fact, Johor Bahru is only separated by a 2.7km bridge over the Johor Straits from the Woodlands Checkpoint in the north of Singapore.

Johor Bahru as seen from Johor Strait

Due to its proximity, Johor Bahru (also lovingly known as JB in Singapore) became a popular destination for Singapore residents to spend a quick weekend in. It is also a crossing point for those of us who are looking for short getaways from Singapore .

Crossing over to Johor Bahru is easy. I’ll cover what you need to know in this post!

Tips for Crossing over to Johor Bahru

Here are a couple of pointers that will make your journey to JB smoother:

Bring your passport with a minimum of 6 months validity – Yes, even though it’s such a short trip that doesn’t feel like an international journey, you’re still crossing over to a different country – so you need your passport. Additionally, make sure you have at least 6 months’ validity on your passport!

Check if you need a Malaysia visa  – If you hold a China or India passport, you need to get a visa to enter Malaysia. You can check  Malaysia visa requirements here .

Fill in Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) – Unless you’re holding a Singapore passport or Malaysian Long Term Residence, you will need to fill in MDAC starting January 1, 2024. You can fill out MDAC here within 3 days of your planned departure to Malaysia.

Queue at Johor Bahru Checkpoint – While exiting Singapore as a resident should be easy enough, you might encounter a long queue at the Johor Bahru Checkpoint. If that’s the case, check counters 3-4, 7-8, 11-12, or 15-16 for a potentially faster queue. These counters are usually manned by two officers and might move faster. But before joining the line, make sure both officers are present!

Johor Checkpoint

Avoid peak times and holidays – Crossing the border is easy, but when it’s holiday time, it could take up to 4 hours to clear the immigration on both sides. I will elaborate below on the best time to go to Johor Bahru.

Using E-Gate at Johor Baru Checkpoint – If you hold a Singapore passport, good news! You can use the automated E-Gate to enter Malaysia. However, on the first visit, you still need to go to the manual counter to get your passport verified. On the subsequent visits after that, you can use the E-Gate.

Bring cash and your physical credit card – In most shops and restaurant you’ll be able to pay with credit card, but payment using Apple Wallet may not go through. I had this happen in one of the shops I was buying things from, but I was still able to use my credit card and wave it on the machine.

Coming back to Singapore? Fill out the Arrival Card – If you’re coming back to Singapore as a tourist and you do not hold residency here, you’ll need to fill out Singapore Arrival Card (SGAC). You can fill out SGAC here .

Best Time to Go to Johor Bahru from Singapore

With a high volume of economic and tourism activities happening between Singapore and Malaysia, the land crossing between Singapore and Malaysia at Johor Bahru is undoubtedly one of the busiest border crossings in the world.

Many Malaysian residents live in Johor Bahru and work in Singapore. Because of this, on weekdays, most traffic will be coming from Johor Bahru to Singapore in the morning, and vice versa in the afternoon when people are off work. I have seen the terrible traffic from 3 PM from Singapore to JB.

On weekends, it’s the opposite – most traffic will be Singapore residents who want to do a short weekend trip in JB or other parts of Malaysia. The busiest time on the weekend will be going from Singapore to Johor Bahru after 8 AM on Saturday and coming back on Sunday around 4 PM.

So, the best time to cross from Singapore to Johor Bahru is on weekdays , from Monday to Friday in the morning by 10 AM , and coming back to Singapore in the afternoon by 4 PM . Otherwise, you might face long queues at the checkpoints. On Weekends (Sat and Sun) or Public Holidays, I would go from Singapore to JB as early as possible in the morning – as early as 6 – 8 AM. And if you’re coming back to Singapore on Sunday, I’d try to cross the border by 2 PM.

How to get to Johor Bahru from Singapore

Getting to Johor Bahru from Singapore is a well-oiled machine. It’s no wonder many Singaporeans love visiting JB on weekends! Here are a few easy ways to get to JB:

1. Causeway Link Bus (My preferred way)

The fastest way to travel to JB by bus is using the Causeway Link Bus, which gives you direct access from various points in Singapore to the Johor Checkpoint, without stopping anywhere else.

Causeway Link Bus at Queen Street Terminal

If you happen to live near one of the routes, I highly recommend Causeway Link because it is the easiest way. Here are a few locations where you can board the Causeway Link Bus in Singapore:

  • CW1 from Kranji MRT
  • CW2 from Queen Street Terminal near Jalan Besar MRT. CW2 is the only one that operates 24 hours. There is always a bus leaving every few minutes during the day, and every 45 minutes after midnight.
  • CW3 and CW4 from Jurong East Bus Interchange
  • CW5 from Newton Circus Carpark near Newton MRT Exit B
  • CW6 from Boon Lay MRT

Causeway Link Routes and Schedule: View routes and schedule here . You can also click on any of the bus routes to see when the next bus will be arriving!

Causeway Link Bus costs $2.60 – 6.00 one way depending on which route you take. You can use Visa Paywave to pay the bus fare. Please note, unlike the Singapore public bus, you only need to tap your card once when boarding the Causeway Link Bus. You do not need to tap your card again when alighting. This is because they charge a flat rate instead of a distance-based rate.

Once you cross Woodlands Checkpoint, you can take any Causeway Link bus to Johor Bahru Checkpoint for $1.80. If you’re going to Larkin Sentral (to catch another bus to other parts of Malaysia) then you can use your Causewaylink ticket to board CWL.

2. Singapore Public Transportation

Yes, it’s possible to cross the border with public transportation too! The public transportation is slightly cheaper than the Causeway Link Bus, but not by much – it is capped at $2.37 per journey.

There are many ways to get to Woodlands Checkpoint by public transportation, but the easiest way would be the following direct services:

  • Take the MRT to Kranji MRT station , then resume the journey with Bus 170X
  • Take the MRT to Woodlands MRT station , then transfer to Bus 950

There might be queues for these buses as they are quite popular, but they’ll come by frequently.

Once you get through the Woodlands Checkpoint, you can board any public bus to resume your journey to Johor Checkpoint.

3. Private Car Transfer

If you are traveling as a big family or carrying a lot of luggage, you might want to get a private car instead. I did not see anyone carrying luggage when I was traveling by bus.

It is not the cheapest, but it is the most comfortable way – They will pick you up where you live and you don’t need to get out of the car to cross the border. All the immigration checks will be done while you are still sitting in your car!

Book a Private Car: I had a good experience with SG JB Taxi on my trip to Desaru . Alternatively, if you want to try taking the bus to JB but need a car back, you can book a private transfer from JB to Singapore via Klook on your way back!

Desaru Coast Crossing Border

How to get around in Johor Bahru

The easiest way to get around in Johor Bahru is by Grab. From Johor Bahru Checkpoint, you can get picked up from JB Sentral at the CIQ Jalan Jim Quee pick-up point.

CIQ Jalan Jim Quee Pick up Point

In my experience of going to JB on a weekday, I did not have any issue getting a Grab car. I was always able to get a car within 10 minutes of booking and the fares are very cheap relative to Singapore. I paid RM 26 for a 12 km journey.

How to cross the border to Johor Bahru from Singapore (and back!)

On my recent visit to JB, I went on a Thursday morning. I chose to go to Queen Street Terminal and take CW2 since it is the closest to where I live.

Taking the CW2 was easy. You only need to line up near the bus (if there is a line) and board the bus using your preferred method of payment. In my case, I used Visa Paywave via Apple Wallet on my phone. Note that Visa Paywave will be charged in MYR since Causeway Link is a Malaysian bus!

Inside the CW2 Bus

We boarded the CW2 bus at 9:47 AM, and it left shortly after to Woodlands Checkpoint. We arrived at Woodlands Checkpoint by 10:19 AM. Very fast.

Arriving at Woodlands Checkpoint

Clearing the Singapore immigration was easy for us as Singapore residents. We just went through the automated gate on the far right. By 10:26 AM, I was back in the bus area queueing for the Causeway Link Bus to Johor Bahru Checkpoint.

Queue for the Causeway Link Bus to Johor Checkpoint

We arrived at the Johor Bahru Checkpoint at 10:48 AM. There was a long queue, but it moved fast and we cleared immigration using a manual counter by 11:09 AM.

Johor Checkpoint

After that, we simply followed the signs to JB Sentral, where I’ve asked my Grab car to pick us up. And off we went to our adventure in JB!

Crossing over to JB Sentral

On the way back to Singapore later in the afternoon of the same day, we did the same thing but in reverse. The Causeway Link Buses were already waiting for us so there was almost no wait.

Boarding Causeway Link Bus to Woodlands Checkpoint

The whole thing was so easy that I wondered why I did not do this more often.

And that’s my experience crossing the Singapore – Malaysia border and back! I hope this post is useful to you. As always, please feel free to leave comments below.

Until next time!

Possibilities of Staying in Johor Bahru

sonalsinghal

Hi, I have a job opportunity to move to Singapore but my husband would possibly take some time to get a transfer. At the same time getting a job in Johor will be easier. Is it a good idea to live in Johor and commute to Singapore everyday? We have 2 kids who will be going to school. Please guide. Thanks Sonal

surya2k

Malaysians who have EP or any kind of work pass to work in Singapore can live in Johar Baru (JB) and commute daily for work in Singapore. Others are not allowed, except below category with lots of painful daily check in and check out at Woodland check point (both sides). MM2H requires foreigner applicants to have liquid assets worth a minimum of RM500,000 and offshore income of RM10,000 per month. And that range borders on insane-rich, even by Singaporean standards. Even if a foreigner purchase a RM1mil property, he is only qualified for place lower deposit AFTER approval. Go through the detailed requirements for your consideration. http://www.mm2h.gov.my/ If one so desires to live in JB to cut cost of living and is willing to waste hours commuting via 2nd Link and Causeway to Singapore for work, obviously he is not making that mint to benefit from MM2H. Good luck Note: To obtain MM2H can take several months and to visit Malaysian authorities many times.

Thank you for your guidance. But is it different if my husband gets a job in Malaysia ? In our case, he is able to get a job in Malaysia and myself in Singapore . So can we stay in Johor Bahru and I commute to SG everyday ? Is it possible to buy a car and drive down ? Thanks again !

I have told you already that other than Malaysians (with working visa), others can't do daily transit to Singapore. Secondly, if you don't obtain Dependable Pass (DP) in Malaysia then you are not allowed to stay in Johor. If your husband gets job in Malaysia then by rule he can stay there, if you and your children want to stay in Malaysia then you need to obtain DP. You should be very clear that your EP in Singapore is only allowed you to stay and work in Singapore. If your kids want to stay in Singapore then they need to obtain DP under your sponsorship, whereas your husband can obtain his own EP or S pass or DP under your EP. Same thing can be applied in Malaysia. Johor is just not like visiting one city to another (twin city where you just cross over driving your own car or using public transport). It will take hours to go through the hectic traffic at both side, run through two check points (Both in Singapore and Malaysia). Even you got MM2H, then this issue you have to face daily. One suggestion, don't ever try to break rules here, it's not India that you will somehow getaway it. In Singapore, any wrong doings will be landed in big trouble including hefty penalties and lifetime ban entering this country again. So, don't do silly things without knowing it's consequences. Good luck

Thank you and the idea to check prior is to ensure that we comply by the law / regulations. Rgds

I did know foreigners living in JB and commuting to Singapore. As Surya said, they needed residence visa for both countries and wasted lots of time travelling back and forth. So, depending on your residence and workplace, it may be possible. (Try to work at Tuas and live at Gelang Patah, or nearby, and use the second link to make it more bearable!) You also need an (expensive) Singapore car for this, as Malaysian cars are not allowed to cross often.

SINGAPORE: Ten people were recently nabbed  at Changi Airport for failing to declare that they were bringing in over S$20,000 (US$14,720) in cash into Singapore.

Since May, all travellers have had to  make such declarations online  and within 72 hours of arriving at or departing Singapore’s checkpoints.

Why the need to declare large amounts of cash?

One expert pointed to the "anonymity" offered by cash and the "obvious appeal" for those engaged in illegal activities.

“The larger the sum of cash involved, objectively the more suspicious it is," said Associate Professor Sandra Booysen, director of the Centre for Banking and Finance Law at the National University of Singapore’s law faculty.

"We have more efficient and safer ways nowadays of keeping money and making payment.”

Associate Professor Razwana Begum Abdul Rahim, head of the public safety and security programme at the Singapore University of Social Sciences, told CNA that declarations help authorities track suspicious money flows and ensure that the funds are not being used for unlawful purposes.

These include money laundering , terrorism financing, fraud and tax evasion.

Mr Rajan Supramaniam, senior criminal lawyer at Regent Law, gave an example of a case he handled some years ago, where a female client had received over S$100,000 as part of drug transactions.

The money had been transferred from an account in Kuala Lumpur to her in Singapore. She withdrew the sum and made plans to head to Johor Bahru and hand it over to someone there.

She was eventually charged with money laundering and jailed.

S$400,000 confiscated from moneychanger who did not declare full sum of almost S$2m when entering Singapore

Why the s$20,000 limit.

It's about striking a balance between effectiveness and intrusiveness, Assoc Prof Booysen explained.

“The level can’t be too high as illicit purposes are more likely to go undetected," she said.

"Nor can it be too low as the extent of disclosure will be both overwhelming and unwarranted, since the use of cash is unremarkable for small transactions."

Calling the S$20,000 amount reasonable, Mr Rajan said: “In some borderline cases, the authorities may issue a warning. This would require a valid explanation, such as for medical reasons like payment at private hospitals, or a family emergency. They have to be able to give the evidence.”

Some other possibly "legitimate" reasons cited by the experts included gifts, business transactions, education costs or payments for large purchases.

115 travellers caught at Changi Airport for failing to declare, pay GST on items

What happens if you don't declare.

Regardless, travellers who fail to fully and accurately declare over S$20,000 in cash or bearable negotiable instruments – such as traveller’s cheques, money orders and postal orders – can be jailed for up to three years, fined up to S$50,000 or both.

“As the declaration has to be done online within a 72-hour window, this gives them really no excuse not to do it,” noted Mr Rajan. “They cannot, for instance, claim they do not know they are carrying that amount of cash.”

The lawyer of 25 years previously worked as a senior prison officer, where he often came across inmates sentenced for travelling with large amounts of undeclared cash.

“In some cases, they were more explicit in trying to evade detection – hiding the cash in the dashboard and other parts of the car, or even in their body orifices,” he shared.

Bringing home a luxury item bought overseas? 5 things you need to take note of

Is this unique to singapore.

No. Such declarations are also mandatory in other countries.

Travellers entering or departing Australia need to declare if they're carrying cash amounts beyond A$10,000 (S$9,052).

In the United States, you have to declare if you're carrying more than US$10,000 (S$13,548) in cash.

Countries in the European Union - such as Germany, Spain, Italy and France - require travellers to declare if they're carrying more than 10,000 euros (S$14,577).

There's a limit of £10,000 (S$17,172) you can bring into or out of the United Kingdom without needing to declare.

And in the United Arab Emirates, which includes Dubai and Abu Dhabi, the limit is 60,000 dirham (S$22,130).
