You're reading this because you're likely deep in internet research, trying to determine the best places to travel in March. It's that awkward month between winter and spring, when it can get surprisingly hot and still unseasonably cold at the flip of a switch. Whenever leaving the house, it's a toss up—is this puffer weather, or the time to switch to sandals ?
Flee the indecisive climate and get thee to somewhere that's properly hot. Or properly cold. Though the notorious spring breakers tend to command all the attention at airports and train stations this month, there's so much more to traveling in March than sipping margaritas with a herd of Gen Zers (sorry, Gen Z). As spring looms in the northern hemisphere, some destinations begin to emerge from winter hibernation with blooming flowers . Meanwhile, buzzy spots in South America and Asia offer a blessed lack of the humidity (and crowds) you might experience in the busier summer months (did someone say shoulder season?).
Whether you’re looking to warm up with a tropical beach vacation or want to cling to the last days of winter with a ski trip, this is the month to do it. Here are nine of the best places to travel in March, from Big Sky in Montana to the Okavango Delta in Botswana.

Panama is a great place to visit any time of year, thanks to its biodiverse jungles, sprawling beaches, and relative lack of crowds compared to neighboring Costa Rica. But March is an especially great time to experience that outdoor splendor, with temperatures in the 70s and 80s and lots of sunshine (the rainy season kicks off in April). The Caribbean-facing province of Bocas del Toro is a one-stop shop for both gorgeous beaches and active wildlife. For a truly memorable experience, take a nighttime snorkeling trip through bioluminescent waters with Hello Travel Panama .
A straight shot south from Bocas del Toro, the Pacific Ocean-facing province Chiriquí offers an equally beautiful, but wholly different slice of nature. Here you can hike through cloud forests, swim beneath roaring waterfalls, and witness the panoramic sunrise from the summit of Volcán Barú. Check in at the 10-room boutique hotel Finca El Oasis right on the edge of the volcano, or venture a bit off the Pacific Gulf to the remote, luxurious 400-acre resort of Isla Palenque . And make sure to allow time for Panama City, where a revived historic center thrives—no wonder we recently named it one of the Best Places to Go in Central and South America in 2024 .
Cartagena, Colombia
Cartagena is one of the best places to travel in March, thanks to weather primed for both city exploration and beach relaxation. Temperatures stick around the high 70s and low 80s without too much humidity, and ocean breezes make for cool and comfortable evenings. Visit the UNESCO-listed Old Town, complete with cobbled streets and colonial-era architecture, as well as the high-rise-heavy neighborhood of Bocagrande and street-art haven of Getsemaní .
While there are several city beaches to enjoy, it’s worth taking a quick drive outside city limits to see some truly pristine stretches of sand. Take a 1.5-hour bus ride to Isla Barú, where you can swim in the cerulean waters at Playa Blanca and sample plates of ceviche at local restaurants. You can also take a boat ride to the Rosario Islands, a coral archipelago about one hour southwest of the city, to experience some of the region’s best snorkeling. Back in town, rest up at Condé Nast Traveler Readers' Choice Awards darling Sofitel Legend Santa Clara , located right at the northern edge of Cartagena’s historic district.
Northern Rivers, Australia
This northeastern corner of New South Wales was ravaged by massive floods in 2022, but after recovery efforts in 2023 partially boosted by tourism, the area excitedly began welcoming visitors again this year. That, paired with its reputation for coastal resort towns, scenic seaside drives, gorgeous Pacific beaches, and adventuresome hikes and treks, earned it a spot on our list of Best Places to Go in 2024 .
March will be an especially fun time to visit the land Down Under: Since it's the southern hemisphere, the weather will just be cooling off from summer—ideal if you prefer more temperate climes. The wave-lashed town of Byron Bay will be hosting the 2024 Australian Pro Adaptive Surfing Championship , the country’s first international event for surfers with disabilities, which should make for some exciting energy along the coast.
Locals and visitors alike will be spoiled with a bevy of openings in Northern Rivers: Copperstone by the Range Estates will open its equestrian-style ranch in Bangalow in early 2024 (their properties Swell Hotel and the California-style Sun Ranch in Byron Bay are both epitomes of Aussie style and chill), while in Yamba on the southern fringe of Northern Rivers, the designer and stylist Sheree Commerford will open a breezy seaside inn called Il Delfino in early 2024.
Ilulissat, Greenland
Greenland is icy, mysterious, and one of the most naturally beautiful places on the planet. And while the concept of the summertime midnight sun is appealing, there are many advantages to skirting the June to September crowds in favor of a late-winter sojourn. The coastal town of Ilulissat is particularly appealing in March, when there are less tourists, lower hotel prices, and a lack of mosquitoes and other pesky bugs (a major problem in the summer months). The town also happens to shine most beautifully at this time, with a thick layer of snow shrouding the region in a peaceful silence.
You can reach Ilulissat via an Air Greenland flight from either Copenhagen or Reykjavik. The Ilulissat Icefjord (one of the northernmost UNESCO World Heritage Sites) can be seen from your plane window, but you’ll want to get an even closer look at the massive collection of icebergs. AirZafari offers small-plane flights in Ilulissat, while you can find helicopter tours through Air Greenland . If you book a stay at Hotel Arctic , you can also book boat and helicopter tours (along with dog sled rides, walking tours through town, and more) directly through the concierge.
Big Sky, Montana
If you think ski season is over by the time March rolls around, think again: Montana’s Big Sky Resort doesn’t close its slopes until late April, meaning you can still enjoy prime conditions during this month. Big Sky features an incredible 5,850 acres of skiable terrain, with sizable portions dedicated to both beginner and expert runs (keep an eye out for the brand-new Lone Peak Tram opening this winter.) It’s easily one of the best ski destinations in the country, but the region offers so much more than rides down the slopes. Yellowstone National Park is just an hour away, for example, and the park’s geothermal pools look even more brilliant set against a backdrop of snow.
You could also have your fill of skiing at Montage Big Sky , an alpine resort that offers ski-in, ski-out access to Big Sky Resort. On top of that, the property also provides guests with opportunities for snowshoeing, Nordic skiing, hiking, and fly-fishing—not to mention some seriously luxurious interiors. Cozy up by the lobby fireplace or snuggle in the fur throw at the foot of your bed, then treat yourself to a massage or grab a craft cocktail at the après-ski bar. Consider these just some of the reasons Big Sky is one of the Best Places to Go in North America this year.
Raja Ampat, Indonesia
It takes a bit of effort to reach the Raja Ampat Islands —flying first to Jakarta , then to Sorong, where most travelers hop on a liveaboard. But once you arrive, you’ll be greeted by lush jungles, blue channels, and biodiverse reefs. The archipelago is truly a scuba diver’s dream, where an average dive gets you up close to manta rays, hawksbill turtles, and around 1,300 species of colorful coral-dwelling fish. There’s really no bad time to visit, but March typically yields the best diving weather (think less rain and calmer waters).
The most popular way to explore Raja Ampat is by booking a small cruise or yacht, and you have several great options to choose from. You could try Aqua Expeditions and set sail on the long-range cruising yacht, Aqua Blu , which offers seven-night, island-hopping itineraries . The boat has 15 sea-facing suites and a spa, and guests can partake in activities like snorkeling, kayaking, diving to manta ray cleaning stations, and searching for elusive bird of paradise species on guided hikes.
Southeast Asia's Lion City is aptly named because it's facing the new year with a great big roar. There's always lots to do in Singapore, especially in the year ahead (the cosmopolitan city-state is on our list of Best Places to Go in Asia in 2024 ), but there's something happening in March that's whipping the island into a tizzy: The pop princess Taylor Swift is bringing her Eras Tour to the Singapore National Stadium for her sole stop in the region. Hotels bookings are reportedly through the roof, and additional flights have been added , but keep an eye out for the openings of the new Grand Hyatt and the latest Raffles on Sentosa Island for more room at the inn, as it were.
Beyond the Swiftie reasons to swing by Singapore in March, there's also the return of glamorous and ultra-luxury train travel with Belmond's Eastern & Oriental Express , which will, in February, have begun their new itineraries from Singapore into the Malaysian peninsula and back, featuring excursions into Taman Negara National Park and culinary tours on Penang Island, which should be incredibly fun and engaging—that is, if you can tear yourself away from your plush state room or the swanky dining car.
Dana Point, California
Dana Point, a small harbor city along California’s southern coast, is known for its incredible dolphin and whale populations. That reputation was cemented in early 2021, when the town was dubbed the first “Whale Heritage Site” in the United States, courtesy of the World Cetacean Alliance. Dana Point is now one of five global destinations to receive such an honor, specifically created to recognize destinations that offer dolphin- and whale-watching experiences that are both responsible and sustainable.
While you can see some whale species year-round, February and March are known as peak season to see the California Gray Whales as they make their annual migration to Baja California . Book a 2.5-hour tour with Captain Dave’s Dolphin & Whale Watching Safari , where you can see the magnificent mammals from an underwater glass pod while listening to a live narration from expert naturalists. Or, book the OC Wine Cruise with Dana Wharf Sportfishing & Whale Watching, which lets passengers sample four different organic wines while they scan the sunset-lit waters for breaching whales.
Okavango Delta, Botswana
Picture it: Seasonal floodwaters rolling into parched sands and transforming them into a delicate tracery of glittering rivers and channels—the dry plains once again dripping with new life. That's the scene that greets you at the Okavango Delta in Botswana, the world's largest inland river delta. It plays host to a wide variety of wildlife, thriving across great swathes of the land held by the Moremi Game Reserve. You may encounter safari lions, leopards, giraffes, and rhinos; and when the floodwaters quench the land, you'll paddle in canoes past hippos, elephants, and crocodiles.
In the summer (that's January and February in Botswana, given it's the southern hemisphere), rainfall from the Angola highlands is drained by the Okavango River into the delta, where the water levels will rise and fall over the next four months, from March through June, making this month the best time to see the transformation happen before your very eyes.
Looking for a place to stay? African Bush Camps opened the riverside Khwai Lediba in 2023, and will open Atzaro Okavango in March 2024. The latter will feature 10 lagoon-side suites and offer peak safari-luxe vibes and a strong sense of place through design. (To no surprise, it's one of the Best Places to Go in Africa in 2024 .)

The best places to visit in March 2024

By March, spring is stirring across the northern hemisphere, thawing a number of high-profile destinations from their chilly, off-peak periods – with the added bonus that the crowds have yet to arrive. Meanwhile, in the southern hemisphere, the mercury is starting to slide in the opposite direction, attracting thrill seekers and bargain hunters for low-season adventures.
No matter what you’re looking for, it’s a rewarding time to hit the road. Find out some of the best places to go in March.
The best places to travel to in March for relaxation
Gran Canaria, Spain
Why now? Spring clean mind and body with a tai chi and chill-out break.
Gran Canaria is a perfect destination for a wellness escape amid sand dunes and blissfully balmy weather, with temperatures reliably above 20°C (68°F) and over seven hours of sunshine daily in March. The beautiful belly-button of the Canary Islands is a hotbed of yoga, meditation, tai chi and qigong retreats, with several clustered around Las Palmas , Gran Canaria’s culturally diverse capital. Pick a location according to your interests – after your early-morning tai chi session, you’ll have plenty of time to relax or get active. You’ll find beaches galore on which to get horizontal, but consider striking out onto the island's hiking trails, too.
Why now? Ride reliable waves in a surf and yoga hot spot.
A string of surf camps stud Morocco ’s coast between Agadir and Essaouira , mostly clustered around Taghazout and the quieter fishing village of Tamraght. The surf is reliably good between October and March, when the weather starts to warm up but waves are still big, long and consistent. Most camps offer a simple recipe: limber up with sunrise yoga, then grab a board and find the best breaks, sparing time to explore the galleries and souqs of Essaouira’s fortified medina.

Costa Rica
Why now? Enjoy coasts, cloud forest, volcanoes and white-water rivers.
A tiny country with a huge range of landscapes and wildlife, Costa Rica also has huge weather – hence the lush rainforests. Come in March to hit the dry(er) season on both Pacific and Caribbean coasts and in the highlands (though showers are always likely). It’s also after the peak US holiday period, so crowds are thinner. The hardest part will be deciding what to do while there .

North wales .
Why now? Experience outdoor activities among daffodils and spring lambs.
Springtime in Wales : lambs wander hillsides sprinkled with clusters of butter-yellow daffodils. Though sunshine is never guaranteed here, the Welsh countryside is glorious in March, which is a great time to dust off wintry cobwebs and explore some of the UK ’s less-visited countryside. The Dee Valley is a year-round destination for active adventures – the River Dee being one of the few that offers great white water year-round, with rafting, kayaking, body-boating and even stand-up paddleboarding providing adrenaline highs.
The best places to travel to in March for food
New Brunswick, Canada
Why now? Succumb to your sweet tooth amid snowy landscapes.
March is maple syrup month in New Brunswick , a province as peaceful and little-touristed as it is packed with natural beauty and history. In this “fifth season,” temperatures start to nudge above freezing and the sap rises in maple trees. Sugar camps (or shacks) welcome hungry visitors to sugarbush events with cooked breakfasts of eggs, bacon, sausage, beans and pancakes – all smothered with that sticky syrup, of course. With snow lingering on the ground, work up an appetite cross-country skiing, snowshoeing or winter hiking in spectacular settings such as Fundy National Park .
Istanbul, Turkey
Why now? Discover bazaars, ancient wonders and culinary secrets in peace.
Istanbul always astounds, but in March, as things begin to warm up toward the end of the low season, you can enjoy discounts, smaller crowds and more-forgiving weather. Be sure to save some time for the greatest legacy the Ottomans left the world: food. Why else would the Spice Bazaar be so huge and bustling? From simple kebabs to meze feasts and the luscious aubergine masterpiece, imam bayıldı , there are few cuisines as indulgent as that of Turkey . Over the past couple of decades, a roster of excellent food-themed walking tours and cooking schools has sprung up in Istanbul, providing the opportunity to combine a springtime city break with a culinary reboot.

The best places to travel to in march for culture.
Tiwi Islands, Australia
Why now? Revel in the excitement of the annual Football Grand Final and Art Sale.
If you thought the rest of the country was football-mad, wait until you experience the extraordinary levels of fandom among the Indigenous people of this two-island archipelago , 80km (50 miles) north of Darwin. Here, more than one third of the population of under 3000 plays the Aussie-rules game, many at the highest level. As March ebbs and the rains start to ease off, the annual Tiwi Islands Football Grand Final and Art Sale draws lovers of both sport and culture, who hop across from mainland Northern Territory to watch the match and pick up unique pieces from the “Islands of Smiles.”
Why now? Quieter sites and a gritty city in early spring.
Naples is unapologetic. This southern Italian sprawl is scruffy around the edges, yet has an indefatigable spirit, a dramatic location (on the Bay of Naples, in the shadow of Mt Vesuvius ) and, of course, the best pizzas in the country. Off-season March is neither too hot nor too cold, and well before most visitors descend. That means unmissable sights such as the Museo Archeologico Nazionale (packed with Pompeiian artifacts) are crowd-free – as is Pompeii itself, just a 45-minute train ride south.
The best places to travel to in March for wildlife and nature
Kyūshū, Japan
Why now? Be dazzled by cherry blossoms during early sakura season.
A cherry tree in bloom is a delightful sight – sure. But 2000 cherry trees blossoming in the clear spring air – now, that’s a mind-boggling spectacle. Japan ’s warmer southwestern island of Kyūshū blushes with blossom before the better-known spots on Honshū. Its Somei Yoshino and Yamazakura trees bloom from mid-March in parks around Fukuoka , at the magnificent castle in Kumamoto , and in Yoshino Park in Kagoshima , set against the dramatic backdrop of aptly named Mt Sakurajima.
Why now? Spot dazzling birdlife and watch nesting sea turtles.
This emerald isle afloat off the coast of South America is everything you’d expect from a Caribbean paradise: palm-fringed beaches, a relaxed pace of life, sunshine. And plenty you might not expect, too. Rather than big cruise ships and package tourists, little Tobago attracts nature lovers, snorkelers and divers. March brings the fine weather you’d want on a beach holiday, but also nesting sea turtles – green, leatherback and hawksbill – who return to lay their own eggs on the patches of sand from which they hatched. Watch (with care!) as the lumbering females haul themselves ashore, or join monitoring and conservation programs to help these threatened beauties.
Why now? Track tigers and rhinos in the best season for wildlife-watching.
In March you have a good change of spotting a one-horned rhino in India’s Kaziranga National Park . And with the eagle eyes and experience of an expert guide, you might also spy tigers (Kaziranga has one of the densest populations), leopards, gaurs, elephants and sloth bears.

2. Sicily
Sure, we all know Italy as a summer vacation spot, but it does get pretty choker. Why not beat the start of the high season and head to Sicily for some springtime sun, before the temperatures reach their scorching summer heights? The breezy March weather will make for a much more enjoyable time to sample all the seafood and explore the gorgeous streets of Palermo and Catania. But it's not just the island’s cities that are worth a peruse - the vibrant town of Cefalu is home to some incredible ancient ruins and even a Norman cathedral.

3. Copenhagen
Straddling two coastal islands, Denmark ’s capital makes for an excellent city break in March. You’ll want to layer up— temperatures don’t tend to exceed 5C/41F—but it’s a small price to pay to avoid the seething tourist crowds that descend later in the year. Most of the main attractions are open, from the National Museum of Denmark to Amalienborg Palace.

4. Yucatan, Mexico
The frankly glorious Mexican state of Yucatan has more world-class things to see, do and experience than some entire countries, and March is a great time to visit. 6. Jaipur, India
Jaipur, aka the ‘Pink City’ on account of the blushed hue of its buildings, is one of India ’s top highlights, and March temperatures (around 30C/86F at the hottest part of the day) make it all the more agreeable. Highlights include the stupendously impressive palaces of Hawa Mahal and Jal Mahal (the latter sits in the middle of a lake), and Nahargarh Fort, which is one of the finest in a country where there’s plenty of competition.

Pleasing alliterations aside, there are some huge pluses to visiting Morocco ’s Marrakech in March. The daytime temperatures lounge around a manageable 22C/72F, perfect for a city that begs to be explored on foot, with a tantalising maze of alleyways within the ancient medina walls (not to mention the enormous public square, Jemaa el-Fna, at the heart of it all). 10 Best Places to Travel in March
From the streets of valencia to chicago, these spring destinations are not to be missed..
- Copy Link copied
Screw the cleaning. Make spring the time to take a trip, and blow out the cobwebs in a much more fulfilling way. Even better, shoulder seasons like spring usually offer an affordable way to combine low-season hotel rates and fewer crowds with high-season weather, a canny workaround for any value-seeking traveler.
We’ve pulled together some of the places to visit in March, including an alternative to cherry blossom-spotting (hint: come hungry) to the Caribbean ’s toniest superyacht race and a pyromaniac’s delight of a festival in Europe.
Here are the 10 best places to visit in March.
80% of the world’s supply of almonds comes from California.

1. Modesto, California
March is great for: swapping cherry blossoms for a farmland stand-in.
California ’s agricultural heartlands are often eclipsed by their snazzier coastal counterparts , but pause to consider a trip to the Central Valley, home to some of America’s finest farmland—and in particular, almond groves.
The trees are planted across 1.5 million acres of land here, and a riot of pink and white flowers carpet the horizon from mid-February to mid-March. Modesto, a city with 120,000 acres of those groves, has cannily devised what it’s dubbed the Almond Blossom Cruise , a self-guided driving tour with two routes (and plenty of detours) that allow you to explore the area and see as many blossoms as you can; the western circuit is an hour or so, while the east will require up to three hours.
Stops include farm stands—pick up some tangy signature cheddar at Fiscalini —as well as restaurants and farms. Standouts include Rodin Farms and Roberts Ferry Nut Company, as both have groves that run right down to the parking lot line.
Where to stay
- Book now: DoubleTree by Hilton
The 260-room hotel downtown is an affordable base, right off Highway 99 and within walking distance of many local landmarks—don’t miss the superbly restored McHenry Mansion, a Victorian-Italianate masterpiece dating back to the 1880s.
How to get to Modesto
Southwest’s your best bet, as it uses the nearest airport, Sacramento, as one of its national hubs, connecting the Californian capital with countless cities across the country from Palm Springs and St. Louis to Portland, OR. From there, it’s a 90-minute drive or so.
It takes about 40 pounds of powder and two hours to transform Chicago’s waters into a dazzling emerald, using a secret formula about which the city is understandably territorial.

2. Chicago, Illinois
March is great for: the ultimate Paddy’s party.
Is there anywhere else to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day other than Chicago ? After all, the Windy City goes beyond a massive parade (though there’s one of those, too.) No, the city, quite literally, transforms, as the main river here is dyed bright green on the Saturday before March 17 (this year, that’s March 15). It’s a fleeting change, as the ferocious water flows mean the color ebbs away within one to two days, so you’ll need to be here that weekend to see the maximum impact—take a cruise on the water for an up-close glimpse.
As for celebrations, there’s an endless assortment, whether the Irish American Heritage Center on the north side or the Shamrock’n The Block party in downtown’s West Loop, with a heated beer tent and lots of Irish dancing.
- Book now: 21C Museum Hotel
This funky boutique chainlet—now part of the Accor umbrella—is aptly named: Each of its sites acts as much as a gallery as a crash pad, a nod to the passions of its art-collecting philanthropist founders Laura Lee Brown and Steve Wilson. The four-year-old Chicago site is no exception, with work from local artists like Colleen Plumb ranged around the property, including its 10,000-square-foot onsite gallery.
How to get to Chicago
ORD is a hub for not one but two airlines, United and American, with ample service across the country. But don’t dismiss the smaller, nippier Midway (MDW), which Southwest services to the likes of Houston, Sarasota, and Charleston, South Carolina.
This Bucket Regatta is a reminder that St Barts is an outdoorsy, active destination, too, with almost three quarters of the land here designated as a green zone, and so precluded from construction.
3. St. Barths
March is great for: seeing an alternative side to this party-powered island.
Sure, come to St. Barths to sashay ‘round the pool. But there are other reasons to visit this slice of France, just a short flight off the coast of St. Maarten—like the Bucket Regatta this month, which takes place from March 21-24.
This race is a four-day, invitation-only race that’s a point of pride for super-yachts worldwide. This year, there will be no yacht hop party, but instead a dockside bash at the Capitainerie on Saturday night for the ultimate mingler. If you’re not schmoozing or racing, though, it’s still a spectacular chance to see some of the world’s finest yachts performing at their peak, all on some of the bluest waters of the West Indies.
- Book now: Le Barthélemy Hotel & Spa
The eight-year-old, 44-room property has a fitting sits on the eastern reaches of Grand Cul de Sac beach and with understated, ultra-luxe décor from French designer Sybille de Margerie.
How to get to St Barths
Book a flight to SXM in St Maarten—there are countless services from the U.S. on everything from Spirit (FLL) to Sun Country (MSP). From there, take the knuckle-biting puddle jumper over to SBH on Tradewinds. At just over 2,100 feet this is one of the shortest runways in the world, so you’ll be in a tiny plane piloted by a seasoned captain.
Windhoek, Namibia’s capital, is one place to catch independence day festivities.
March is great for: a green season celebration.
March 21 is a momentous annual day in the Namibian calendar, as it marks the state’s independence from South Africa. It won freedom in 1990 after more than two decades of fighting—today the occasion is marked by a colorful parade, where citizens march and sing the national anthem, Namibia, Land of the Brave, which was composed by a Kalahari desert-based musician in the wake of independence.
Unlike much of sub-Saharan Africa, Namibia has much less likelihood of torrential downpours during this time. Its version of the green season remains drier than most, with the landscape here creating the dramatic dunescapes that have become synonymous with the country for safari-seekers.
- Book now: Hoanib Valley Camp
The immersive desert experience that is the hallmark of Namibian safari is core to this six-tent camp made entirely from locally sourced materials. Stay here and the game drives focus on desert-adapted lions, elephants, and giraffes.
How to get to Namibia
There are several ways to reach the capital Windhoek (WDH), though none is direct. Consider flying into either Cape Town or Johannesburg and connecting from there, or opt for the Ethiopian Airlines service to Addis Ababa, with connection down to Namibia. Ethiopian connects its capital with Atlanta, Chicago, Newark, JFK, and Dulles.
Melbourne’s Fed Square is one of the main spots to get in on the foodie action.
5. Melbourne, Australia
March is great for: foodie pilgrims with a hunger to explore.
Melbourne ‘s fantastic food scene is mostly thanks to the fact that the surrounding state is such a superb produce source—much of its raw materials need only travel a few miles to the city’s restaurants. That’s all celebrated with the Melbourne Food & Wine Festival , which runs from March 15-24 and sees more than 300 different events as part of its official schedule.
Fed Square downtown’s deeded over to bakers and pâtissiers, complete with a wood-fired oven pop-up, while record-breaking stunts like the World’s Longest Brunch and Lunch (tables running almost 2,000 feet through the main gardens here) are intended to be fun ways to sample the cooking of top local chefs like Andrew McConnell. He’ll helm the kitchen for lunch while Indian cuisine will be spotlighted during brunch, including creations from fine dining champ Helly Raichura.
- Book now: The Ritz Carlton Melbourne
The 257-room property opened in the spring of 2023 and is housed in Australia’s tallest building—views from the 80th floor sky lobby are superb out along the Yarra River and over Victoria Harbour.
How to get to Melbourne
MEL is one of the international long haul gateways in Oz, so there’s ample option—Qantas and United connect it with LAX thirteen times weekly, and there are also direct non-stops from Dallas and San Francisco.
The ninety or so islands on Saudi Arabia’s coast are pristine, and the mainland features sweeping dunes, ample historic sites and remarkable open countryside.

6. The Red Sea, Saudi Arabia
March is great for: a pioneering trip to a soon-to-explore spot.
Even though there’s enormous development planned in Saudi Arabia ‘s Red Sea— 50 hotels should be open within the next six years—the government aims to protect the reason it appeals, promising that the ground-up infrastructure will emphasize renewable energy and zero waste operations.
The peak period to visit ends in February, but the weather remains appealing this month thanks to the still-clear skies—ideal conditions for stargazing . Spend a night out in the dunes around a desert campfire, with local guides sharing stories and legends that connect the centuries-old culture here with the modern developments transforming Saudi Arabia at time-warping speed.
- Book now: Six Senses Southern Dunes
This property includes open-plan villas intended to connect guests with the surrounding sand dunes, plus a signature spa (which, by the way, is two floors and includes a fitness suite with views of the desert.)
How to get to Saudi Arabia
Right now, the best routing to this region is via Riyadh, with direct flights on Saudia from JFK; it’s a two-hour hop from there to RSI, the local airport for the Red Sea. The latter’s primed to welcome international flights at some point in 2024, which will make arrival even easier.
Colorado’s Winter Park allows snowboarding and end-of-season skiing when other, lower altitude spots are running low on powder.
7. Denver, Colorado
March is great for: late-season skiing and bargain dining..
March is typically the snowiest month of the year in the Mile High City , often logging just under a foot of powder. Climate change has made that less predictable, but there’s still a chance to see the city under a romantic white blanket; this is a place that can more than function even in the trickiest of winters.
You can also choose to stay inside for Denver Restaurant Week , running from March 1-10, with prix fixe meals at many of the top spots here for between $25 and $55 per person. And don’t dismiss the chance to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day here, either: there’s a parade that’s among one of the largest in the country, with around 10,000 marchers and 200,000 spectators—this year, it’s being held on Sunday, March 16.
- Book now: Hyatt Centric Downtown Denver
The three-year old, 264-room outpost of the funky, mid-market Centric brand has an outdoor rooftop with fireplaces for al fresco cocktails as well as a 1,000-square-foot Presidential Suite that occupies the entire 15th floor.
How to get to Denver
Denver is one of United’s prime hubs, so check your options with UA. The airline services dozens of cities countrywide from here, including Wichita, Kansas, and Little Rock, Arkansas.
Maipu Valley, in addition to Luján de Cuyo and Uco Valley, account for the majority of Argentina’s wine output.

8. Mendoza, Argentina
March is great for: a southern hemisphere harvest festival.
More than 1,500 wineries are spread over the three growing areas of the Mendoza region: Maipu Valley, Luján de Cuyo, and Uco Valley. You’ll be able to sample and experience all of them in a single place during La Fiesta Nacional de Vendimia, a festival dating back to the 17th century that marks the beginning of the harvest season.
In early March, alongside parties, dance displays, and special dinners in local restaurants, the city hosts La Bendición de los Frutos, an event where a priest publicly blesses the harvest, as well as Via de la Reinas, a parade where a beauty queen from each of the 17 districts in the region rides around town on a specially designed float. This year, the festivities conclude on March 3, so barrel down at the start of the month to catch its climax.
- Book now: The Vines Resort & Spa
Stay at this property in the heart of the Valle de Uco, set on 1,500 acres of private vineyards estates, with 21 villas ranged around the property—the largest of them tops out at 2,700 square feet—and each of the modernist structures has an outdoor deck that’s a prime spot to sit and contemplate the Andes mountains.
How to get to Mendoza
Try the LATAM routing via Lima, Peru, from JFK, or São Paulo in Brazil, which is connected to multiple U.S. gateways on legacy carriers Delta, United, and American.
Visit Edmonton’s craft beer festival and try brews from the Alley Kat Brewing Company, Red Shed Malting malt house, or a pale ale from the father-son-run Six Corners Brew Works.

9. Edmonton, Canada
March is great for: homegrown delights from the hop-growing hub of Canada.
More than 16,000 square miles of the Canadian province of Alberta are prairies, and one key crop grown in this vast landscape is barley. From March 8-9, the product of prairie-grown barley is celebrated via the local Craft Beer festival . There’s a thriving craft beer scene here mostly thanks to the change in law back in 2013, which removed a cap on small producers; as a result, there are now more than 100 operating in the province.
This two-day fest celebrates their output, with tastings as well as seminars and cooking demos. Half-day passes start at $15 while a VIP+ weekend-long entry is around $188 per person.
Where to stay in Edmonton

10. Valencia, Spain
March is great for: satire and starchitecture.
For one thing, Valencia’s food scene is impressive—this is the birthplace of paella , after all. The cityscape is jaw dropping, too: It has been world-leading in sustainability , earning the title of European Green Capital for 2024 from the European Commission.
If you needed another incentive to consider a trip, then, this month’s Las Fallas Festival should be the clincher. It’s the most important in the city’s calendar, and runs from March 1-19. During this time, the city is festooned with papier-mâché figures, known as ninots, both traditional or satirical. All but two of them—saved by public vote on March 15—will be burned at the festival’s conclusion, the event known as La Crema.
- Book now: Hospes Palau de la Mar Hotel
A one-time nobleman’s mansion right in the heart of the city is now a 66-room luxury hotel, set amid a large garden which was once home to his horses. The minimalist rooms combine whitewashed walls with rich chocolate wood fixtures.
How to get to Valencia
There are no direct, non-stop flights from the USA, so choose either to connect in Madrid, which is serviced by Iberia, American, and Air Europe to JFK, LAX, and DFW. Or go with Iberia’s partner British Airways, which has a wider network stateside. It’s a 2.5 hour flight from LHR to VLC.

March is one of the best times to vacation. The March equinox, which occurs around March 20, marks the beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere and the beginning of fall in the Southern Hemisphere. For this reason, March tends to be a mild time of year, warmer than the winter months and cooler than the summer months.
March also sees significant celebrations that center on rebirth and growth, like Carnivale, Holi, and Easter. Additionally, flight and accommodation costs tend to be lower between the peak winter season and the summer high season. And since it’s a quarter of the way into the year, March is the perfect time for some much-needed rest and relaxation.
Here are 14 wonderfully warm places to visit in March.
14 Wonderfully Warm Places To Visit In March
You can take a look at quick summary of these 14 wonderful places by looking at the story below, or continue reading to learn about each one in more detail:
1. Destin, Florida
A beach town on the Florida Panhandle, Destin is renowned on the South Coast for its beautiful beaches, warm water, and marine wildlife. At Destin Harbor, you can feed dolphins, take an ocean tour, or lounge on the Crab Island sandbar.
Although high season in Destin begins on Memorial Day weekend and runs through the summer, college students descend on the town during Spring Break, so you’d be better off traveling to the beach town before or after this time. Fewer students and tourists mean you get the crystal blue water and white sand all to yourself! Enjoy warm days on the beach and cozy up near a heater in the evening at HarborWalk Village.

2. Cancún, Mexico
Cancún’s year-round warm weather attracts many visitors seeking to fly south for the winter. While winter is peak travel season and the summer months are too hot and humid, March is just right, with temperatures fluctuating daily between the low 70s and high 80s.
One of the biggest spring equinox celebrations on Earth occurs at Chichen Itza, one of the great wonders of the world. The Mayans , the ancient civilization that built the city of Chichen Itza, also studied the stars and planets, and the information they gleaned informed their construction. During the equinox, the light shining on the Pyramid of Kukulcan looks like a snake slithering down the temple steps.
Just a 2-hour drive from Cancún, Chichen Itza is an easy day trip that allows tourists to view this phenomenon and to partake in the equinox celebration.

Celebrations for St. Patrick’s Day have spread around the world in recent years. From its homeland to the US, here are the best celebrations to visit over the weekend of March 17th.
1. Dublin, Ireland

- Why visit in March? A St. Patrick’s Day party like no other.
On the third weekend in March, much of the world will be engulfed by a bright green St. Patrick’s party. Regardless, there’s nowhere better to spend it than Ireland ’s capital, Dublin .
Pre-empt the party with a free tour of St. Patrick’s Cathedral , where writer and poet Jonathan Swift served as dean. Then join hundreds of thousands of revelers at the St. Patrick’s Day Parade as it winds through the city. From Parnell Street to Kevin Street, entertainers and marching bands from all over the world put on an enormous show.
Elsewhere, all of Dublin is awash with green. In the Festival Quarter at the National Museum of Ireland’s Collins Barracks, a vast roster of events are planned. Music, dance and circus acts entertain, food sizzles and, of course, gallons of Guinness are poured. It’s the very definition of the Irish craic, just make sure to book early to get the best hotel and flight deals.
2. Chicago, Illinois

- Why visit in March? The biggest St. Patrick’s Day party in the US.
Probably the most famous St. Patrick’s Day party in the US, Chicago celebrates its Irish roots in style every year. From the Irish enclave at Beverly to the Irish American Heritage Center near Albany Park, the party lasts all weekend.
Irish taverns fill with partygoers and cultural events take place on seemingly every corner. Events like Shamrock’n the Block at Old St. Patrick’s Church showcase what the event means to local communities. In 2024, the big parade will take place on Saturday 16th along Columbus Drive between Balbo and Monroe. The extravaganza will feature huge floats, bagpipers and Irish step dancers, all led by the Shannon Rovers Irish Pipe Band.
The big draw, however, is the now legendary dyeing of the Chicago River. Using a non-toxic vegetable-based powder, the city turns its primary waterway into a vivid emerald-green soup. Lasting for several days, it’s the perfect time to take a river cruise.
3. Munich, Germany

- Why visit in March? To celebrate all things beer.
March is shoulder season in southern Germany. Crowds are as thin as they ever get and prices as low. That could be down to the weather, with average temperatures only a shade above freezing. In my view though, that just means a ski trip to nearby Garmisch-Partenkirchen is still on the cards.
Although Bavaria’s capital is most famous for Oktoberfest, St. Patrick’s Day isn’t far behind in its cultural calendar. Head to Odeonsplatz for the usual green-hued parades and parties but with a distinctly German twist. Alongside the Guinness you’ll find classic Bavarian beers and foods to warm your bones. Try the würstl (sausages) of course but I urge you to try a schweinshaxe (ham hock) too. Caution: you may need to sit down afterwards.
If that’s not enough, Starkbierfest also runs from March 1st to 24th in the grand hall of the Paulaner Nockherberg. Literally translated as the Strong Beer Festival , it offers exactly what its name suggests.
Best places to travel in March in the US
While much of the US is still bitterly cold, things are warming up in the south. Spring blossoms, harvest festivals and one of the world’s great cultural gatherings dominate the March calendar.
4. Macon, Georgia

- Why visit in March? To see the city turn pink.
In the heartland of Georgia , nature puts on one of its most spectacular shows in March. From the 15th to 24th, Macon plays host to the International Cherry Blossom Festival . The city transforms into a “pink, cotton-spun paradise” as its 350,000 Yoshino trees erupt in a cacophony of cherry blossoms. In celebration, it puts on parades, concerts, fairs and an almighty pink party .
Beyond the blossom, Macon is an epicenter of Native American history . Stroll Ocmulgee Mounds National Historic Park , a fascinating memorial to the region’s ancient indigenous peoples. The newest national park in the US, it serves up a great view of Macon from the top of the Temple Mound.
In the city, wide avenues are lined with art galleries, boutiques and architecture that speaks to its long history. Music is everywhere, in buzzing bars and concert venues, on the streets and in historic venues like Grant’s Lounge . Macon is served by a regional airport but taking a flight to Atlanta , two hours away, and renting a car is easiest.
5. Austin, Texas

- Why visit in March? To gorge on Texan hospitality at SXSW.
One of the US’s cultural powerhouses, Austin peaks in March with the sprawling South by Southwest festivals . Once the domain of musicians and movie makers, it has grown to be one of the most comprehensive cultural events in the world . A playground for comedians and creatives, entrepreneurs and technologists to showcase acts and share ideas.
Unsurprisingly, SXSW brings with it sky high prices and heaving crowds. Plan ahead, find a well-priced stay and you can tune into the events that don’t carry a huge price tag. Bars like Mohawk and Sahara Lounge pop with live music and comedy. Parks and even parking lots host all manner of pop-up shows .
And there’s always a huge slice of Texan hospitality on offer. I find it’s best enjoyed with plates of Tex-Mex and frozen margaritas, preferably at Trudy’s Texas Star or Habaneros .
6. Charleston, South Carolina

- Why visit in March? Food festivals and foot-stomping fun.
Visiting Charleston is like stepping through a door into the history of the US. From walking the French Quarter as horse-drawn carriages clatter past over cobblestones to the historic houses and exhibitions on Museum Mile . Never do the city’s antebellum houses and blossoming trees look better than in March under spring light and mild temperatures.
The sun and warmth draws locals and visitors onto the streets in search of entertainment. From March 6th to 10th the Charleston Wine + Food Festival celebrates the best of local culture and cuisine. Brunches and lunches, dining and dancing, classes and workshops, all community-led to celebrate the stories and flavors of the Lowcountry.
Later in the month, the Charleston Bluegrass Festival lights up the Woodlands Nature Reserve with a weekend of boot-stompin’ bluegrass.

In many ways Valencia is the ideal manifestation of Spain in city form. Historic but innovative, sun-baked with gorgeous Mediterranean-fronted beaches, and a grand tradition of incredible food. Paella, anyone?
March brings mild temperatures, long bright days and crystal clear nights. Perfect conditions for a festival—Valencia’s biggest, in fact. Las Fallas , the bonfire festival , kicks off in late February with a huge firework display to signify the start of spring. It’s March 15th when things really heat up, however.
Across the city, falleros erect enormous and incredibly elaborate papier-mache towers —the ninots. Many artists spend all year creating their ninots, knowing exactly what will happen to them. Judged over three days, they’re then set alight in a blaze of pyrotechnic glory. And all the while extravagant parades, outdoor concerts and 24-hour street parties thrum across the city. Spain at its very best.
8. Pesaro, Italy

- Why visit in March? It’s the Italian capital of culture for 2024.
Among the big-hitting cities of Italy, lesser-known Pesaro has been appointed its Capital of Culture in 2024. Overlooking the Adriatic Sea, this seaside resort is a haven of culture and nature in the historic Marche region.
With the slow dawning of spring in March, Pesaro awakens from its winter slumber. The birthplace of Rossini, it’s recognised by UNESCO as a creative city for music thanks to its promotion and revival of his music. See for yourself with a tour of Casa Rossini where multimedia exhibits bring his story and music to life.
On your city stroll, drop into Musei Civici in the aristocratic Palazzo Mosca , where striking artworks jostle with architectural splendor. Pass through the Ducal Palace and Duomo before stopping to admire Arnaldo Pomodoro’s stunning globe installation, framed perfectly by the setting sun.
Fly into nearby Rimini and hire a car to make the most of the Marche region—and don’t miss Monte San Bartolo Natural Park surrounding Pesaro.
9. Madrid, Spain

- Why visit in March? The winter thaw and spring blooms.
Before temperatures reach the furnace-hot levels of summer, spring is the best time to visit Spain’s capital. With days lengthening and temperatures climbing, Madrid’s cherry blossoms burst into bloom. The biggest and best shows unfold in Parque Quinta de los Molinos and El Retiro , the city’s most famous green space.
The cold veneer of winter fades not only from the weather but also the inhabitants. Chairs and tables spill onto the streets from bars and restaurants. Locals emerge from hibernation to fill the sidewalks, raise a glass and gorge on tapas. As the evening chill descends, Madrid only warms up with revelry and dance.
As with any historic European capital, Madrid is alive with culture and attractions. Architecture of the Belle Époque, the Palacios Real and Cristal , the Reina Sofia modern art museum—home to Picasso’s ‘Guernica’— to name but a few.
10. Narvik, Norway

- Why visit in March? To see the sun rise.
Spring may be spreading across much of Europe, but in the northern reaches of Norway temperatures are still freezing. March brings two special events to the town of Narvik: the sun breaks the horizon for the first time since fall and the Vinterfestuka kicks off.
The former is a moment of celebration—the dawn of the New Year and a healthy dose of much-needed vitamin D. The latter is the Winter Festival , a party to shake the pillars of Valhalla. From March 8th the city erupts into ten days of non-stop festival fun and it’s an awesome place to be.
Eighteenth century opulence and hedonism is the theme of the event. Dress in fine period clothes, join costume parades and raucous concerts, visit theaters and art exhibitions. Food fries, drinks flow and streets pulse with activity. The warmth of the new sun is reflected in the hospitality of the locals.
Best tropical place to travel in March
Festivals in colder climes are great, but there’s something extra special about partying into the night on a tropical beach. In March, there’s one place that does it better than any other.
11. Goa, India
- Learn more: India travel guide
- Why visit in March? To celebrate Holi with sand between your toes.
Of all the spring festivals that happen around the world, none is embraced like the Hindu festival of Holi . Celebrating love and the arrival of spring, it’s best known as the Festival of Colors. Although it engulfs the whole of India, there are few better places to enjoy it than tropical Goa, also known as the Land of Beaches.
Holi, often called Shigmo in Goa—is celebrated on the first spring full moon: March 25th in 2024. The night before sees huge parties and celebrations erupt along the Goan coast. The main event happens the next morning when everywhere (and I mean everywhere) is blanketed in a riot of colors. Crowds take to the streets armed with bags of vivid powder dyes, liberally tossed into the air and sprayed from water pistols until the world is a rainbow.
Everyone gets involved with Anjuna and Ponda particularly good fun. My choice is Vagator , however, thanks to its gorgeous beaches and outrageous parties.

Best places to travel in March
Winter’s done, here comes the sun – and a whole heap of multi-hued fun
Colours are everywhere in March: dancing across the sky in Iceland, making up a feathered headdress at Carnival, thrown into the air in India and blossoming in the cherry trees in Japan. If you feel like celebrating the end of winter or holding onto the joy of summer – then a trip in March is just the ticket.
1. South India
Why go? Celebrate life with Holi and enjoy the comforts of a slightly cooler India Temperature: 27ºC (81ºF) high, 17ºC (62ºF) low Season: hot and dry season
Possibly the only place that can outdo the colours of Carnival is the celebration of Holi, which takes place every March in India . Known as the Festival of Colour, everyone is invited to join the throwing of colourful powders, which celebrates the end of winter. With accompanying sweets, traditional music and bonfires lit to celebrate the day, Holi is just a good time all around. Celebrations occur all across India but those looking to get doused in colour should look to the events in the northern regions, specifically in the Golden Triangle .
Why go: Beaches are sunny and the party’s just getting started Temperature: 29ºC (84ºF) high, 22ºC (72ºF) low Season: Summer
Brazil in early March is a dazzling array of samba, sequins, celebration and more as Carnival continues until March 8 in Rio de Janeiro . Nicknamed ‘The Greatest Show on Earth’, Carnival is as exciting as it gets with a never-ending stream of parades, street parties known as ‘blocos’ and glamorous balls.
Outside the party, this month in Brazil is still warm, perfect for wandering around the sights in the morning with a dip in Copacabana in the afternoon. Say less; we’ll grab the feathers.
Why go? Flowers frame the countryside and the trails open again Temperature: 27ºC (81ºF) high, 12ºC (54ºF) low Season: Spring
Celebrate the end of Nepal ’s winter with a burst of colour during Holi on March 25. With the arrival of spring, the rhododendrons, Nepal’s national flower, begin to bloom bright pinks and purples across the trails and tracks. A pretty stellar sight for those trekking up to Base Camp .
The new season also brings warmer temperatures, meaning some trekking trails will become accessible again. This is one of the two peak hiking seasons, although March generally sees fewer people than the other peak time (mid-September to November).
Why go? One of your best chances to see the northern lights Temperature: 3ºC (38ºF) high, -2ºC (28ºF) low Season: Winter
The spring equinox on March 20 is known to strengthen and brighten the lights and colours of the aurora borealis (thanks to a whole lot of long scientific words). The temperatures are slightly warmer this month, and spring is soon to arrive in April.
While March is still a winter month, there are now around 10 hours of daylight instead of the mid-winter five. Meaning more time to spend traversing snow-covered landscapes, hiking over glaciers and marvelling over frozen waterfalls. Iceland is one of those destinations that shimmers (literally) in both summer and winter, so why not tick one off this March (and hopefully the northern lights too)?
Why go? Quiet and cooler days, festive Ramadan celebrations at night Temperature: 20ºC (68ºF) high, 10ºC (50ºF) low Season: Spring
In 2025, Ramadan will take place in March, and as a predominantly Islamic country, Jordan can be an exciting place to visit during this time. Many residents partake in the traditional daytime fasts, and when iftar (breaking fast) comes, the festive spirit is brought to life.
The streets are decorated, families gather, restaurants are full, and street vendors entertain with music and shows. Alongside the celebration, prayers and reflection, there is also a focus on generosity during Ramadan, with many making an effort to give meals and aid to those less fortunate.
Travel and tourism continue somewhat normally during Ramadan. However, there are things to keep in mind, such as being mindful of those who are fasting, eating in private and being aware that alcohol will likely not be served, to name a few.
Why go? Blossoms in bloom and plenty of room (away from the crowds) Temperature: 16ºC (61ºF) high, 8ºC (46ºF) low Season: Spring
Cherry blossoms season means peak season, but after you’ve checked off the blooms, there’s a lot more of Japan left to see – and we’ll have you away from the crowds in no time.
The southern regions of Japan are known to have fewer visitors but great weather around this time of year. Made up of volcanoes, onsens, galleries, rice fields and more, you’ll see a slower side of this typically energetic country. What’s more, on some of our Japan itineraries , you’ll even be welcomed with a night of home-cooked meals and local hospitality in a Usuki countryside homestay (we guarantee the crowds won’t be here).
If you are in town specifically for the cherry blossoms, mid-March to mid-April will likely have the best blooms. But they can never be guaranteed – Mother Nature isn’t one to stick to a schedule.
7. Southwest USA
Why go? Weather that’s comfortable for trekking the deserts Temperature: 26ºC (79ºF) high, 11ºC (52ºF) low Season: Spring
Canyons, monuments, valleys and more await in Southwest USA this spring. Cooler weather makes trekking in this desert region much more comfortable than in summer when crowds and temperatures hit their peak.
With stops including the Grand Canyon , Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks, you just know there’s a view around every corner. But that’s not all this region has to offer. Be taught local history and culture with a Navajo guide in Monument Valley, hike the red rocky trails of Sedona, make a stop at Historic Route 66, and then call it a day in Las Vegas . This here is the Wild West and it’s not to be missed.

The Best Places to Go in March 2023
Plan an escape while you wait the arrival of spring.

Seasonally speaking, March can be quite the struggle. It's still cold in most parts of the country, and spring, though technically on the horizon, feels nowhere near arrival. Why not take this opportunity to plan a getaway? Perhaps you actually like the cold and want to squeeze in one last snowy retreat, or maybe you want to wait out winter's last breath from the warm confines of a beach cabana. Whatever your preference, we've rounded up some of the best places for a March holiday, from the rugged wilderness of Alaska to the wildlife enthusiast's haven of the Galapagos. Safe travels!
Alaska Wilderness
Love the cold and want to retreat into the wilderness? Then journey up to Alaska, where majestic snowcapped mountains, national parks, and a long list of outdoor activities make it perfect for adventure-seeking travelers. Think heli-skiing, glacier trekking, dog mushing, and even an excellent chance to see the Northern Lights (until April). This month also happens to be the 50th anniversary of the Iditarod Race, a world-renowned annual sled dog race. Stay at adventure company Within the Wild's remote Winterlake Lodge , located an hour from Anchorage via small plane and nestled on the edge of the Alaska Range, where new-for-2022 experiences include backcountry mountain biking and, for the true daredevil, heli-biking (yes, it's a thing).

Riviera Maya, Mexico
This is not your college kid's spring break. The latest property to join the stretch of luxury hotels lining Mexico's Riviera Maya is the Auberge Resort Collection's Etéreo , which opened in December. It's a mere 30 miles from Cancun airport yet seemingly worlds away from the raucous scene up there. Seventy-five accommodations, all oceanfront or oceanview, are set amongst a lush protected mangrove forest. Choose from the Mayan-inspired signature restaurant Itzam, or four other F&B options throughout the resort. And this being an Auberge, the activities list is endless: snorkeling the Great Mayan Reef, diving in the Yucatan's famous cenotes, parasailing, deep sea fishing, and sunset catamaran tours among them.
Easter Island, Chile
The ancient Polynesian wonders are reason enough to visit Easter Island, the UNESCO World Heritage Site most known for the hundreds of extant stone statues, called Moai, that were created by the early Rapa Nui people, who inhabited the island around 300 AD. Also of note: Nayara, the brand behind the trio of barefoot luxury properties in Costa Rica, recently expanded its portfolio into Chile with Nayara Alto Atacama, in the Atacama Desert, and Nayara Hangaroa , on Easter Island. Plenty of immersive experiences abound at the 75-key, all-inclusive hotel, including ATV tours to secret caves and remote beaches, biking through archaeological remains, and hiking Ara O Te Ao, one of the oldest paths on the island that leads to a massive volcanic crater.

Newport, Rhode Island
Bid adieu to the season with one last wintry New England getaway at the Chanler at Cliff Walk , a real former Gilded Age mansion right on the famous waterfront path lined with iconic palaces like the Breakers, Marble House, and Rough Point. The Chanler was originally built in 1873 as a summer retreat for New York Congressman John Winthrop Chanler and his wife Margaret Astor Ward (yes, of those Astors—she was the great granddaughter of John Jacob). In other words, staying here will get you as close to living like Gilded Age royalty as you can get.

Galapagos Islands, Ecuador
How do you explore one of the most pristine, diverse, and unique ecological and wildlife destinations on the planet in a way that is conscientious and responsible? Start with Pikaia Lodge , an eco-luxe property perched between two inactive volcano craters and located in the heart of its very own private giant tortoise reserve (for which the hotel's owners planted 12,000 trees. There are just 14 well-appointed suites at this carbon neutral Relais & Châteaux, where rates include land excursions, marine explorations aboard Pikaia Lodge's private yacht, a naturalist guide, and full use of wet suits, mountain bikes, and snorkeling gear.

Palm Springs, California
As of now, Coachella is back on for April 2022 after having been cancelled the past two years due to Covid. But why not skip all that debauchery and visit sunny Palm Springs this month instead, during the calm before the storm? That way you can really take in the best of the desert oasis, from the hot springs and spas, to golf, hiking, and horseback riding. The iconic 1930s-era Colony Palms recently underwent a multimillion-dollar renovation masterminded by hotelier and designer Steve Hermann. While honoring its storied Old Hollywood past, the new and improved 57-key hotel also features gorgeous design that references the bygone glamour of the French and Italian Rivieras.

Where is hot in March? Our top 14 destinations
All products are independently selected by our editors. If you buy something, we may earn an affiliate commission.
Spring has sprung once March arrives, but it isn’t all twittering birds and sunshine yet – and not hot enough to tuck away the winter coat. And it’s not just the British who are staying stubbornly crisp, with much of Europe still chilling below the 20°C. Time to retreat to a land far, far away, then, where sapphire seas, lush landscapes and blissed-out beaches are heating up. Depending on how adventurous you’re feeling, you could opt for a heavy hitter in the Caribbean or an off-the-radar archipelago in the Andaman Sea. There are sunny cities , too, and a few far-flung festivities to put a proper spring in your step. Scroll for our pick of where is hot in March, and plan your early spring sunshine escape.
Average March temperature: 33°C
From romantic, under-the-radar islands to buzzy, always exciting cities, Thailand is at its most spectacular in the spring. March is towards the end of Thailand’s typical tourist period, so crowds thin out but temperatures hold firm around 30 degrees, and rain showers are few and far between. The east coast islands are particularly idyllic at this time of year – try Koh Samui or Koh Tao for dreamy white-sand beaches and some of the best hotels in the country.
Where to stay: On Koh Samui’s northeast coast, the Four Seasons is the ultimate escape. Think infinity pools spilling down leafy hillsides overlooking the glistening ocean beyond and a spa with treatments inspired by the island.
Average March temperature: 29°C
This Caribbean island is one of our all-time favourites, and March is the perfect time to visit before the heat and humidity ramp up for the summer. The island is packed full of charming eateries, beautiful hotels and serene bays with lapping turquoise waters. Plus, the island has plenty of all-inclusive options that offer the best of both worlds.
Where to stay: Fairmont Royal Pavilion is as grand as it sounds. Roll along the palm-tree-lined avenue to arrive at the iconic hotel, where epic terraces look out over twinkling waves and sugary sands and the gardens are like lush green forests waiting to be explored.
Average March temperature : 26°C
Many travellers visit Oman for picturesque mountain scenes and winter sun on spectacular beaches, especially with springtime temperatures ideal for a Vitamin D top-up. However, most visits begin in Muscat, the capital city and cultural hub. Before heading to one of the country’s myriad magical resorts, marvel at the architecture of the Royal Opera House, peruse antiques and spices in Mutrah Souq and explore the Old Harbour in the shadow of the 16th-century Al Jalali Fort.
Where to stay: The best stays in Oman range from uber-luxe desert camps where fires and sparkling barbeques illuminate the landscape to sleek hotels that house indulgent spas. Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort is one of the most unique properties in Oman. Perched 2,000 metres above sea level on the rim of a canyon, adrenaline-inducing adventures include ziplining along rugged cliff faces. Connor Sturges
Marrakech, Morocco
Average March temperature : 23°C
March in Marrakech means toasty temperatures reaching the high twenties, even low thirties, towards the end of the month. Such balmy weather is ideal for enjoying the area’s cultural highlights – come in mid-summer as the mercury tops 45C, and you won’t want to be anywhere besides the pool, frozen cocktail in hand. Leave space in the suitcase and take it to the souks, where pungent oud scents the shaded alleyways and traders sell their wares, vivid piles of powered spices and hand-woven carpets. Alternatively, go intrepid and tackle the Atlas Mountains with an expert guide. Enjoy a long breakfast in the sun before wrapping up – dustings of snow top the tallest peaks into May.
Where to stay: For an authentic Moroccan experience, check into one of the riads nestled into the heart of the bustling medina. The colourful boltholes make for a cosy stay when the springtime temperatures drop a little during the night, and many have rooftop spaces for lounging on during the day. Alternatively, Mandarin Oriental Marrakech is one of the city outskirts’ most opulent offerings. Set among 20 acres of manicured gardens, pool villas are sleek oases pointing toward the Atlas mountain peaks. Connor Sturges
Average March temperature : 19°C
It’s shoulder season in one of Europe’s most reliable winter-holiday spots as Cyprus is calm before Easter, and has a good eight hours of sunshine a day. Temperatures can be mild enough for beach trips, but get out of Paphos and there’s plenty more to quicken the pulse. There are sensational dive spots in and around Larnaca, particularly the MS Zenobia, a ferry that sank on her 1980 maiden voyage, often ranked in the world’s top 10 wreck dives. Travellers can also disappear into the Troodos Mountains in search of its incredible frescoed Byzantine churches, best reached from capital Nicosia, then head to the Limassol foothills for vineyards and micro-wineries, grape terraces spreading prettily across the slopes.
Where to stay: Anassa , a super-solid hotel break perfect for a family holiday, plus home to a beautifully sleek spa. Alternatively, if you're seeking sea views, Amara has arguably the best. For more, see our pick of the best hotels in Cyprus .
La Palma, Canary Islands
La Palma is the Canaries’ greenest and most unspoiled spot, with pristine night skies ideal for star-gazing and pine-scented air that clears the mind as much as the lungs. It’s also a walkers’ island, where footpath signposts outnumber cars. Rock pools and waterfalls refresh flagging travellers, and the boutique hotel scene is surprisingly sharp. Lighthouse-turned-hotel Faro Punta Cumplida is dressed up with a swimming pool and silk bed linens; in the capital, Santa Cruz de La Palma, Hotel San Telmo , a restored 17th-century building, sets delightful sun-filled rooms around a garden and rooftop terrace.
Where to stay: For a truly memorable stay, bed down in Faro Punta Cumplida , a still-functioning 18th-century lighthouse in the rugged northeast of the island, arguably La Palma’s most enchanting region. Elsewhere, Hotel San Telmo is perfectly-located in the oldest part of Santa Cruz de La Palma.
Seville, Spain
Average March temperature : 21°C
The south coast of Spain is a good bet year-round, but March is a time for Seville to shine. The Andalusian city has warmer temperatures than many popular European destinations, which can become unbearable during the summer months. In spring, you're less likely to face the crowds but can wander around with just a light jacket in hand. Spend your time eating and drinking your way through the city – tapas at El Rinconcillo followed by drinks at one of Seville's many rooftop bars is highly recommended.
Where to stay: Built specially for Seville’s 1929 Expo, Alfonso XIII was commissioned by the then king of Spain, who gave it his own name. Now, The hotel’s 148 rooms alternate Andalusian , Castilian and Moorish decorative styles, making this a beautiful and unusual choice. Meanwhile, Corral del Rey is a 16-room boutique divided across buildings on either side of the narrow street with which it shares its name. Two of the rooms have private pool terraces for a glass of wine while taking a dip.
San Diego, California
For a taste of sunny southern California without the crowds, San Diego can’t be beaten. It’s an eternal beach-bum city with a temperament permanently set to ‘chill’. Join the surfer dudes and VW vans at Ocean Beach, or cycle past perennial volleyball games along the Pacific Beach boardwalk, stopping now and then to sip a homespun brew (AleSmith, Green Flash, Ballast Point). It’s laid-back, yes, but not lazy: there’s plenty of energy in the city’s exploding street art-scene (try North Park, where even utility boxes have been given a paint job). Or get experimental at restaurants such as Wrench and Rodent (‘unorthodox nigiri and sashimi’) and the Gaslamp Quarter’s craft cocktail bars (find Noble Experiment behind a wall of kegs).
Where to stay: Les Artistes in Del Mar, an affordable converted motel with artist-themed rooms: the first-floor 'Gaugin' and 'Diego Rivera' both have baths. Or, if it's a story you're after, few hotels in America can claim as compelling history as the Hotel del Coronado (or ‘the Del’ to those in the know), which celebrates its 135th birthday in 2023. For living like a local, this converted loft should do the trick.
Whitsunday Islands, Australia
Average March temperature : 22°C
It’s peak season here, but with good reason. Longer, sunnier days are ideal for sailing , the best way to explore what are among the world’s clearest waters and whitest beaches. Living up to its name, Whitehaven, in the Great Barrier Reef and only accessible by boat, is covered in bone-white sand. The Whitsundays’ newest, most secluded retreat, Elysian, only has 10 rooms, so even at the busiest time of year, guests have their own piece of Eden. And by rooms, we really mean oceanfront villas , with Australian hardwood interiors and rainforest views. It’s almost impossible to leave, but do try, or you’ll miss out on twilight-yoga classes and swimming in the retreat’s private cove.
Where to stay: Hayman Island , a polished Great Barrier Reef hotel with brutalist architecture and softly sexy rooms. Alternatively, Daydream Island Resort is a breezy, barefoot retreat ideal for families. For something private, this apartment has impeccable views.
Garden Route, South Africa
There’s no better time than spring to meander the Garden Route . We’ve described driving the Western Cape to the Eastern Cape as South Africa’s greatest hit compilation and it’s true: absurdly beautiful beaches, ragged mountains, wine country, virgin forests, inland lakes and amazing wildlife, from whales and dolphins to the Big Five. March is blissfully temperate and falls neatly outside the high seasons. Do it right, and do it slow: the best bits aren’t in the driving but exploring outside the car, whether that’s canoeing through Garden Route National Park or hiking Robberg Nature Reserve’s wild and wonderful cliffs.
Where to stay: Imposing and grand, Ellerman House is both intensely private and incredibly warm, with one of the best private art collections in South Africa. In Hermanus, The Marine has a prime position, and is comfortable and upmarket.
Havana, Cuba
Average March temperature: 28°C
What is it about Havana that’s so enchanting? Is it really just cigars and classic cars? Or is it the sensually rag-tag mix of weathered Spanish mansions, Afro-Caribbean rhythms, punchy food and grande dame hotels? It’s all of it, of course. Tick off old-school experiences, such as sipping Daiquiris in Hemingway’s hangouts, salsa dancing and relaxing in the cigar room at Brando’s favourite, the Grand Packard; then hit up the newer spots: Salchipizza, a bakery from Michelin-starred chef Alberto González; pulled-pork crepes at Belview Art Café.
Where to stay: Casa de Miriam y Sinai is a fantastic first-floor flat oasis of calm and space, with three spacious rooms, one with a street-side balcony, which are spotless and have top-drawer bathrooms. The colourful creative Malecón 663 has individually-decorated rooms, a restaurant, several bars and a concept store.
Mergui Archipelago, Myanmar
Average March temperature : 33°C
There are around 800 islands in Myanmar’s Andaman Sea archipelago, and no places to stay. And that’s exactly what makes it special: it’s accessible, close to the border of Thailand , and yet completely remote. Populated only by the Moken people, settlements are few. Instead, there are just empty beaches, clumps of thick, primeval jungle and untouched coral reefs. The yachties’ version of Shangri-La, one can only visit by boat. With steady winds, clear waters and balmy temperatures, March is a great time for diving, particularly at the ominously named Shark Cave. Others can stick to trekking, getting up close to civets and crab-eating macaques.
Where to stay : With a pool overlooking the beach and horizon, you'll see some of the most impressive sunsets from Victoria Cliff Hotel in Kawthung. On Kyun Pila island, Awei Pila 's outdoor huts feel particularly special.
St Martin, Caribbean
Average March Temperature : 28°C
One island, two nations. That’s the appeal of St Martin, or St Maarten. The Dutch side is the party-hearty bit: casinos, the cruise-ship dock, duty-free malls. Amble to the French side, though, and things get more refined. There’s the pretty town of Marigot, and fine food (L’Auberge Gourmande, in a vintage Creole cottage, is the spot for escargot and veal). Most of the island’s buildings were flattened by 2017’s Hurricane Irma, but it’s been quick to rebuild. Capital Philipsburg is fully restored, and most of the big-ticket retreats have been revamped and reopened. (Belmond La Samanna’s new retro-chic look is a triumph.) Early March sees the Heineken Regatta blow into town with food stalls, bars and live concerts bringing the party to a specially constructed Regatta Village.
Where to stay: Overlooking an idyllic golden stretch of sand, Belmond La Samanna , is a sparkling resort located in St. Martin’s smartest neighbourhood. Those looking for something more private will appreciate this idyllic loft overlooking the perfectly turquoise waters.
Jaipur, India
Average March temperature : 32°C
The Pink City is a must-visit anyway, but come March it’s also the yellow city, the red city, the blue city and every-other-coloured city, due to the Holi festivities. Though you’ll certainly get covered in rainbow powder paint, breathe a sigh of relief that it’s not quite as wild here as in Delhi . In Jaipur, the vibe is more local gathering than en masse mania. Despite India’s signature chaos, there’s always been something very regal about Jaipur – the palaces, the temples, the forts – and you can add hotels to that list, too. Suján Rajmahal Palace just might be the last word in opulence, an actual palace that’s hosted Queen Elizabeth II and Jackie Onassis. It was recently refurbished with lavish, custom-designed wallpaper and fabrics.
Where to stay: Suján Rajmahal Palace is a gloriously revamped hotel with a colourful past. For grandeur, Fairmont Jaipur is a 255-room extravaganza set in terraced water gardens with Mughal-style pavilions and frangipani trees, while larger groups can rent their own castle on Airbnb .

March marks a transitional period from winter to spring, with temperatures easing up and flowers beginning to bloom. Perhaps the month will also mark a significant milestone for you if you're planning your destination wedding , your honeymoon or just a romantic anniversary trip . If you're in the US, it can be a tad challenging to predict the weather in a month that famously "comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb."
There are, however, countless cities and countries that have more predictable forecasts (think 70 and sunny) in March. Of course, one couple's version of a romantic getaway may not suit another. For instance, some may want to take a ski vacation. Others might want to lean into one of our favorite travel trends —slow travel—or enjoy the ease and sea breeze of all-inclusive resorts. Regardless of your travel goals, there's a spot for you with fabulous weather . These destinations will make you believe March is the best month to explore.
Barcelona, Spain
Wondering where to travel in March if you're craving a bucket list-worthy getaway without the jammed itinerary? Embrace the slow travel trend and instead of jet-setting all over Europe (or even city-hopping across Spain), spend an extended holiday in the cosmopolitan city known as the capital of the nation's Catalonia region. Temperatures start creeping toward 60 degrees in March, but crowds are smaller than their late-spring and summer peaks. Couples will have elbow room and won't overheat as they explore whimsical and Gothic architecture (including a Gaudí tour) while eating Catalan must-haves like pa amb tomàquet and escalivada .
Things to Do: Barri Gòtic , Park Güell , Ciutat Vella, Casa Milà, Casa Batlló, La Sagrada Família , Picasso Museum, Barcelona Cathedral, Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya and a cooking class .
Places to Stay: Hotel Arts Barcelona , El Palace Hotel Barcelona , Cotton House Hotel, Autograph Collection , W Barcelona , Hotel Casa Fuster , Monument Hotel and Hotel Neri Relais & Chateaux .
With spring winds blowing in, the year's third month may not scream "ski season" in North America, but Canadian resorts stay open through the middle of the year. It makes our Northern neighbors one of the best places to travel in March. Even if the snow is faux, the milder temperatures will allow couples to cruise the slopes, perhaps graduating from bunny to intermediate, instead of heading inside ASAP due to Jack Frost nipping at their noses. Have spring fever? Cherry blossoms bloom in Vancouver in early March (when the International Dance Festival honoring contemporary dance also typically occurs).
Things to Do: Vancouver International Dance Festival, ski destinations like Tremblant (Quebec), Mont St. Sauveur (Quebec), Whistler (Vancouver) and Marmot Basin (Alberta), Niagara Falls tour and Quebec City tour and cruise .
Places to Stay: Four Seasons Resort and Residences Whistler , Oak Bay Beach Hotel , Sonora Resort , Niagara Falls Marriott on the Falls and Toronto Marriott City Centre Hotel .
Temperatures are a milder 80 degrees in March in St. Lucia, a Caribbean island less likely than Cancun to experience the tail end of spring break crowds. The island is home to all-inclusive resorts near the glistening sea, making for gorgeous backdrops for romantic honeymoon or anniversary dinners and beach days. The fuss-free planning that comes with having meals, snacks and other perks (like water sport equipment access) included doesn't hurt. Plus, the warm waters provide plenty of fodder for romantic getaway itineraries. Dive and snorkel, taking in marine life and coral reefs as you go, or simply sit on a white-sand beach, fruity beverage in hand, and chill.
Things to Do: Tet Paul Nature Trail (Stairway to Heaven), The Pitons, snorkel, scuba dive, Morne Coubaril Historical Adventure Park, Pigeon Island National Park, land and sea tour and make your own chocolate .
Places to Stay: Serenity at Coconut Bay , Calabash Cove Resort and Spa , Sandals Grande St. Lucia , Sandals Regency La Toc , Jade Mountain Resort , Cap Maison and Spa and Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort.
The Florida Keys
March is the best month to hit the Sunshine State before—dare we say it—the sunshine becomes a potential drawback. Temperatures are typically in the 70s and 80s during March, making it a welcome respite for people hailing from states that get a true winter. Though March isn't "peak season," couples can experience various things worth celebrating. St. Patrick's Day celebrations, for instance, are aplenty in these parts, ideal for couples with serious cabin fever. It's also still spring break season.
Things to Do: Sailing , The Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum , Truman Little White House , Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park , deep sea fishing and snorkeling .
Places to Stay: Reef at Marathon Resort , Bungalows Key Largo , Little Palm Island Resort and Spa , Opal Key Resort and Marina and Baker's Cay Resort Key Largo, Curio Collection by Hilton .
The small French island of St. Barthélemy is a dreamy, romantic Caribbean locale set by the sparkling turquoise sea. The annual bucket regatta happens on the island each year in March—experience superyacht racing, perhaps for the first time, and social events. Tropical temperatures remain in the 70s, mild enough to feel like you can stick your toes in the sand and stay a while without letting anyone see you sweat.
Things to Do: Attend the St. Barths Bucket Regatta , snorkel or scuba dive , mingle at Nikki Beach Club , visit Colombier Beach .
Places to Stay: Pearl Beach Hotel , Cheval Blanc , Eden Rock , Rosewood Le Guanahani St Barth , Hôtel Le Village Saint Barth and Hotel Christopher Saint-Barth .
Charleston, South Carolina
The idyllic South Carolina port city with cobblestone streets and horse-drawn carriages feels straight out of another place in time. Historic inns and B&Bs with service that epitomizes Southern hospitality give a trip here a home-away-from-home feel. The warm vibes and mild temperatures make Charleston one of the best places to travel in March in the US for couples from cooler climates (it's also a worthy road trip for Southerners). The weather is generally in the mid-60s—low enough to consider layering without dreading going outdoors like you may be doing somewhere colder. In March, the city hosts its annual St. Patty's Day Parade.
Things to Do: Attend the St. Patrick's Day Parade downtown , historic horse and carriage tour , historic walking tour , Joe Riley Waterfront Park, The Battery, Rainbow Row and cruise at sunset .
Places to Stay: Wentworth Mansion , The Dewberry , Hotel Bennett , The Loutrel , French Quarter Inn , Barksdale House Inn , Fulton Lane Inn and The Jasmine House .
Cape Town, South Africa
March is a popular time to visit Cape Town. Honeymoon weather is at its finest during the month, sitting comfortably in the high-60s and low-70s with little rain. Cyclists hit the pavement for the world's largest timed bike race, the Cape Town Cycle Tour, each March. If you prefer a Peloton and blissful relaxation, stunning seaside resorts leave plenty of room for that. The resort town is home to both Atlantic and Indian Ocean beaches, penguins and a lauded wine region.
Things to Do: Attend (or ride in) the Cape Town Cycle Tour , penguin encounter , wine tasting , Boulders Beach, Clifton Beach and V&A Waterfront.
Places to Stay: Mount Nelson, a Belmond Hotel , The Silo Hotel , One&Only Cape Town , Ellerman Hotel , Cape Grace Hotel and Steenberg Hotel .
Munich, Germany
Beer fans consider Munich one of the low-key best places to vacation in March. Though chilly, the Munich social scene heats everything up. You may know all about Oktoberfest, but the large Bavarian beer festival called Starkbierfest takes place in March. St. Patrick's Day is also known for being a hopping good time, with raucous celebrations. Between pours, take in centuries-old architecture in Altstadt (Old Town), experience the arts and culture scene at one of the many museums, or shop at a night market for unique souvenirs.
Things to Do: Altstadt (Old Town), Glockenbachviertel, Marienplatz River Isar, Midnightbazar (night market every other Saturday at 5 p.m.), BMW Museum, Olympiapark, English Garden, Marienplatz and Nymphenburg Palace.
Places to Stay: Louis Hotel , Hotel Prinz München , Gästehaus Englischer Garten , Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten Kempinski München and Andaz Munich Schwabinger Tor - a Concept by Hyatt and Hotel München Palace .
Jamaica's pleasant climate makes it one of the best honeymoon destinations in March. With temperatures in the 70s and the sun usually shining, every day can be a beach day here. The island is known for having some of the top all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean, making planning a total breeze. Speaking of breezes, you'll get plenty of those. The resorts come with beach access, in addition to unlimited food and beverage. Other perks like snorkeling excursions, water sport equipment access and intimate candlelit dinners under the stars can often be added on (or perhaps included).
Things to Do: Snorkel and enjoy a cruise , Seven Mile Beach, Dunn's River Falls and Park, and the Blue Hole .
Places to Stay: Excellence Oyster Bay , Sandals South Coast , Sandals Negril , Hilton Rose Hall Resort and Spa , Sans Souci and Sunset at the Palms .
New Hampshire
Maple Weekend is bigger than Mardi Gras and St. Patrick's Day in New Hampshire. The annual event takes place in mid-March, and sugar houses invite guests to come watch as the sap is taken from the trees and boiled into the sweet stuff. Yes, tasting is included. Elsewhere, Portsmouth's nautical surroundings will get couples in a summer state of mind, even if temperatures are chilly, and Hanover's Appalachian Trail access is ideal for strolls and hikes.
Things to Do: Attend Maple Weekend or stop by a sugar house , cruise Kancamagus Highway, Franconia Notch State Park, tour Portsmouth by bike and hike the Appalachian Trail or Mount Washington.
Places to Stay: Omni Mount Washington , Wentworth By the Sea , The Inn at Thorn Hill and Spa , The Bedford Village Inn , The Hotel Concord , The Glen House Hotel and Residence Inn by Marriott Portsmouth Downtown/Waterfront .
With year-round mild weather, there's truly no bad time to visit the Aloha State. March makes for a good choice. Expect sunshine, blue skies and temperatures in the 70s. However, it's spring there, so a shower or two wouldn't be out of the ordinary during March vacations. Evenings are cooler—in the 60s—so pack layers for dinners out. Unlike the colder Atlantic beaches in the Northeast that won't warm until the summer, Hawaii's Pacific Ocean waters are warm enough to hang ten (or at least learn to surf). The Honolulu Festival brings celebrations and performances to the city each March.
Things to Do: Take a surf lesson , see sea turtles while snorkeling , attend the Honolulu Festival and attend a luau (your hotel might host one).
Places to Stay: Four Seasons Resort Hualalai , Mauna Lani, Auberge Resorts Collection , Koa Kea Resort On Poipu Beach , The Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua , Hotel Wailea and The Laylow, Autograph Collection .

The Best Places to Travel in Europe in March
It’s shoulder season in Europe, and the kids are off from school — what more inspiration do you need to catch a flight overseas? If you’re planning a last-minute getaway, the possibilities for a springtime vacation are many. Is Dublin’s famous St Patrick’s Day Parade calling to you? Or perhaps you'd rather spend spring break lounging on a balmy Mediterranean island. Maybe you'll spend a week trekking through a remote forest in central Sweden, or admiring one of the most famous flower blooms on Earth. Whether you're seeking adventure or a low-key retreat, March is the perfect time to experience some of Europe’s loveliest sights: minus the blistering summer heat and roving crowds.
Zurich, Switzerland
Stephanie Pollak/Travel + Leisure
There are a lot of ways to live it up in Switzerland’s poshest and largest city. In addition to the usual suspects — cafe-hopping in Zurich’s Old Town , or window shopping on Bahnhofstrasse — travelers can raise the bar this spring by having a meal at Dolder Grand . The acclaimed five-star hotel, which overlooks the entire city from atop a hill, will host a special six-course, dessert-only dinner this month, featuring drink pairings and elaborate treats by resident pastry chefs Andy Vorbusch and Jeslyn Teoh.
Chios Island, Greece
It’s sure to be a night of passion on the Greek island of Chios when two rival churches take part in an unusual tradition known as rouketopolemos the night before Easter (March 31). Translated as “rocket war,” the event is exactly as it sounds: starting around 8:00 p.m., the neighboring churches begin firing thousands of fireworks at each other, causing the town to resound with the sound of hurtling comets and exploding rockets. The event is so popular, locals hike up into the hills to ensure a good viewing spot before the blazing proceedings get underway.
Valencia, Spain
Europeans have a way of toasting the start of spring that frankly puts the United States to shame. Whether it’s a town-wide bonfire or tossing bread rolls from the top of a hill, you’re better off on the far side of the Atlantic when the vernal equinox arrives. Case in point: Valencia, Spain. In March, the Spanish coastal city hosts a nearly month-long event known as Las Fallas , which includes street performances, a parade of giant papier-mâché puppets known as ninots , and the construction of a 50-foot high pillar made of flowers.
Dublin, Ireland
The streets of Dublin burst to life this month for the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day . Travelers weaving their way through the capital in March will have plenty to capture their attention, whether it’s a guided podcast walking tour of Dublin Port , or the famous two-mile-long St. Patrick’s Festival Parade . The celebrations span the entire weekend, so plan on escaping the crowds at The K Club , a 5-star country manor located 30 minutes outside Dublin. With a vintage 1936 Jaguar house car, curated whiskey tastings, and horseback trails on 550 acres, the hotel complements Dublin’s wild side by offering a cozier, more refined trip to the Irish countryside.

Chisinau, Moldova
Squeezed between Romania and Ukraine, Moldova is often overlooked by travelers in search of flashier eastern cities like Prague or Budapest. But on March 1, that all changes when the country erupts during the festival of Martisor, which means "Little March." The mass celebration — which was recently declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO — features a fertility amulet known as a martisor , that is traditionally pinned over the heart. Travelers who receive such an amulet from a local should consider themselves very lucky indeed.
Dubrovnik, Croatia
Perhaps this is the month you finally take your dream getaway to Croatia . In March, the Sun Gardens Dubrovnik resort makes up for slightly colder temps with a 60-foot indoor ‘lagoon’ pool and an award-winning spa. The property offers excellent excursions that take advantage of the season, such as a private bike tour through Dubrovnik’s Old Town when all the wisteria is coming into bloom, or a trip to Mali Ston, where the Feast of St. Joseph (think: endless fresh-caught oysters) takes place on March 19.
Óbidos, Portugal
Here’s a surprisng reason to count Portugal near the top of your itinerary this spring: chocolate. That’s because the International Chocolate Festival, held in the medieval town of Óbidos, is an attraction for travelers of all stripes. As long as you have a hankering for chocolate, you’ll go home satisfied. The festival spans several days , turning Óbidos’ narrow cobblestone streets into showrooms where various cakes, truffles, pastries, and chocolate sculptures are on display. It’s a bit like an art fair — but better, because the art is all edible.
Noordoostpolder, Holland
If it’s flowers you’re after, Holland’s annual tulip bloom is a phenomenon that attracts thousands of travelers each year. While the tulips themselves tend not to appear until mid-April, early bird travelers can still enjoy a spectacular show of snow whites, daffodils, and gorgeous pink and violet hyacinth (the latter emerge right in the margin between March and April). Of course, weather conditions vary by year, so it’s best to consult the nation's dedicated tulip website for weekly flower updates, which start in March.
Sonfjället, Sweden
Find serious adventure in the heart of Swedish bear country this spring. Come March, travelers can embark on an epic road about six hours north of Stockholm, in Sonfjället National Park . Considered one of Europe’s oldest preserves, this sprawling wilderness of stark plains and towering rocky slopes is also home to the highest concentration of brown bears in Sweden. So keep an eye out for the elusive bears as they start to emerge from hibernation.
Bled, Slovenia
Michela Sieman/Travel + Leisure
Lake Bled, located in the northern reaches of Slovenia near the Austrian border, is one of the best-kept secrets of eastern Europe. With a freshwater lake at its center, the region is awash with an enchanting, almost fairytale-esque beauty. In early spring, snow is still visible on the Julian Alps, but temperatures begin to rise, making it possible to hike up to Blejski Castle , or paddle around the lake in a traditional pletna boat . End your magical trip with a plate of delicious cremeschnitte , a traditional cream cake.
London, England
With its various trendy neighborhoods and abundance of budget-friendly activities , London is a classic European destination that people never get tired of visiting. But this spring, Colorado-based travelers get a leg up when United debuts its new Denver to London route. The daily, nonstop service connects two important international transit hubs ( Denver International Airport and Heathrow ) and launches on March 24. This month might also be your last chance to enjoy a relatively quiet London, before the madness of the royal wedding descends in May .
Menton, France
If you’ve noticed a glaring citrus shortage in your life, this dreamy coastal city on the French Riviera has the remedy. Menton has hosted its world-famous Lemon Festival (February 17 through March 4) every year since 1928, making it one of the country’s most popular events. It draws even more visitors than the Formula 1 Grand Prix in Monte-Carlo. Visitors should head straight for the Biovès Gardens, where artists create massive sculptures — a replica of the Eiffel Tower, for example — out of oranges and lemons.
Sofia, Bulgaria
The capital of this warm, tourist-friendly nation on the Black Sea is where you’ll find the best example of Martenitsa , a spring tradition celebrated in Bulgaria and nearby countries on March 1. To honor the end of winter (personified as Baba Marta , or ‘Grandma March’), locals exchange red-and-white yarn bracelets. The red signifies life and passion, while the white symbolizes purity. Locals then tie these to the tree branches as soon as the first leaves appear.
Palma, Majorca
Summer is peak season for this Spanish-ruled island in the Mediterranean. But at this time of year, temperatures are mild, and it's possible to enjoy the colonial cathedrals and crystal-clear bays without massive tourist crowds. The big news on the island is Hotel Mamá , a brand new five-star property opening this month in Palma’s historic quarter, with interiors by Parisian designer Jacques Grande. Set in a 19th-century building with a private cinema, rooftop pool, and fitness center, it’s the perfect way to soak up Majorca’s remote, laid-back vibe without skimping on creature comforts.
Milan, Italy
Laura La Monaca/Travel + Leisure
The compact nature of Europe means it’s entirely possible to hit multiple countries in one trip — and that’s exactly what Rail Europe is helping travelers do with their new Milan to Frankfurt route (fares from approximately $150), which began last month. The once-daily service cuts through Switzerland, making for a once-in-a-lifetime trip as the train transports you through scenic towns like Bern and Lucerne. With several impressive art museums and a glut of cozy traditional German restaurants, Frankfurt has more than enough indoor attractions to justify an early spring getaway.

March is the month when many places across the United States are starting to awaken after a long winter. For many, this is spring break, and a great time to explore as a family.
I’ve traveled to over 65 countries over the past decade, but there’s truly no place like home, and the USA will always be one of the most exciting and diverse countries to travel through.
Considering that March is a time of transition everywhere , this epic list of the best places to visit in the USA in March has a lot going on. Spectacular wildflower blooms, northern lights, sprawling deserts, and snowy mountains await.
Table of Contents
The Best Places to Visit in the USA in March Quick List:
- Best for a beach vacation: Big Island, Hawai’i
- Best early spring road trip: Oregon
- Best for wildflowers: California
- Best for hiking: Moab, Utah
- Best for St. Patrick’s Day: Chicago
- Best for cherry blossoms: Washington, D.C.
1. Big Island, Hawai’i
It’s no secret that the Big Island is a BMTM favorite . It’s one of the best places for outdoor adventures , including snorkeling , diving, hiking, and so much more. Considering that Hawai’i is one of the most heavily touristed destinations, you might consider visiting in March, a sweet spot during the islands’ shoulder season (February to May).
Besides the lighter crowds, you’ll enjoy the drier and warmer weather. Plus, March is the best time of year to see humpback whales! Keep in mind to avoid Easter and spring break if they fall in March, because prices will skyrocket.
24 of the best things to do in the Big Island of Hawai’i
2. Fairbanks, Alaska
Fairbanks is one of the best places in Alaska to see the northern lights , and March is the best month to catch them! The days start gradually getting longer, and temperatures increase, making it a super time to get outside and enjoy one of the many things to do in Fairbanks . (Although it is getting warmer, don’t be surprised if it still feels like the dead of winter for those of you coming from elsewhere, as the peak March daytime temperatures are around 35 degrees!) Flights and accommodation also tend to be cheaper in the winter and early spring, another reason why Fairbanks is ideal in March.
Another big perk of visiting Fairbanks this month is catching the World Ice Art Championship. It is unlike any other art competition, as it involves the best ice carvers in the world. It is truly a spectacle to see.

3. Oregon Road Trip
After a long, harsh winter, Oregon’s peaceful nature begins to wake up in March. From Cannon Beach to Crater Lake to Bend and Mount Hood, the absolute best way to take advantage of Oregon’s beauty this spring is to embark on a road trip.
Temperatures are still chilly this time of year, but tourist numbers are still super low, and there’s a good chance that you’ll have many stops to yourself. Plus, low season means low prices on accommodations, and who doesn’t want to save money on travel?
4. Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve, California
The vibrant flowering season in the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve begins in late February and continues until early May. Visiting in March puts you right in the thick of peak bloom season, but keep in mind, California doesn’t experience super blooms every year. It needs to experience heavy rains for them to be particularly spectacular. The reserve is only 67 miles north of Los Angeles but feels totally removed from the bustle of the city, making it a perfect addition to any outdoorsy Southern California camping trip .
Since forceful winds might blow away the poppies in April, March is the peak viewing time. Make sure you prepare for the winds before you go, though, and don’t pick any of the flowers.
5. Indian Wells, California
With warm temperatures and the still snow-capped Santa Rosa Mountains in the distance, you truly get the best of both worlds by visiting Indian Wells in March. Just a short drive from Palm Springs, this is another luxury destination in the area that is known for its breathtaking scenery.
If you’re a tennis fan, March is the ultimate time to visit, because the city hosts the BNP Paribas Open at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden; this year, the event is March 7–20. This is also a great time to explore Indian Wells Canyon, because the usually blazing temperatures are more moderate.
6. Las Vegas, Nevada
Contrary to popular belief, Las Vegas is much more than a mega-party destination. Beyond the casinos, giant nightclubs, and Elvis impersonators, it’s actually an ideal launching point for visiting Nevada , California , and Arizona ‘s national parks. Death Valley is only about two hours away, the Mojave National Preserve is about an hour, and the Grand Canyon is about two hours.
With the mild temperatures, you’ll be able to enjoy the sunny skies comfortably while you explore the city and surrounding natural areas, like Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, which is just 30 minutes away. Take a day trip to see the Hoover Dam or kayak the Colorado River to Emerald Cave .
If you stick around Las Vegas, consider seeing a live show or try to catch the Immersive Van Gogh exhibit while it’s still in town.
7. Tucson, Arizona
If a long winter in your home base has you craving a desert paradise, this is it! Tucson is full of wild landscapes, colorful springtime blooms, and outdoor adventures galore. Plus, the weather in March is a dream, with sunny skies and highs around 75 degrees, just right for heading out to Saguaro National Park and other amazing attractions in Tucson.
Another reason to visit the city in March is to catch the Oro Valley Spring Festival of the Arts , which happens at the end of the month. Tucson has a thriving artist community, and this festival is a wonderful way to dip your toes in. After browsing, head over to the Botanical Gardens to revel in the beauty of desert cacti and succulents.
10 Tucson attractions you can’t miss
8. Mystic Hot Springs, Utah
In what feels like the middle of nowhere, Mystic Hot Springs is a great rustic paradise for a March getaway. These springs are warm all year round and make for a lovely soak during the chilly nights of early spring. The surrounding landscape is also becoming greener at this time of year, with sprinkles of wildflowers all around, the perfect setting to gaze upon as you get your soak on in the springs.
You can get everything you need to plan your trip to Mystic Hot Springs, Utah, here .
9. Moab, Utah
If you’ve been to Moab in the summertime, you know that it can get unbearably hot, and there’s almost no shade in the national parks nearby. That’s why you should consider checking out this red-rock haven this March, as the spring offers ideal conditions for exploring Moab.
Moab is the launching point for some of Utah’s most impressive natural areas , including Arches National Park , Canyonlands National Park, and Dead Horse Point State Park. Plus, visiting in March (with the exception of spring break) means you’ll avoid the crowds that arrive in the summer. Ready to start planning your Moab adventure ?
10. New Mexico Road Trip
What better way to celebrate the beginning of spring than driving through New Mexico’s gorgeous landscapes? The state has a reputation for being scorching in the summer months, so visiting in March means you can enjoy everything it has to offer, without the sweltering heat. Temperatures hover in the high 60s and low 70s during the day, dipping into the high 50s at night. Sounds like the perfect road-trip weather, if you ask me.
So what is there to see in New Mexico, and how do you start planning your road trip ? A great kickoff point is Albuquerque , from which you can then make your way to Santa Fe , White Sands National Park , and plenty of other stellar spots.
11. Kirkham Hot Springs, Idaho
Considering how long the winters are in Idaho , there’s a chance you’ll still see snow on the ground in March. Don’t let that deter you from making a visit to one of the best hot springs in the state, Kirkham. This enchanting destination is wonderful this time of year — it tends to get crowded in the summertime, but the probability of having it all to yourself in March is high.
If you do make it to here this month, check out this complete guide to Kirkham Hot Springs before you go, and consider investigating all the other amazing hot springs in Idaho .
12. Glacier National Park, Montana
If you’ve had your eye on Glacier National Park, consider visiting in March. Although temperatures are still quite low this time of year and some roads might still be blocked with snow and ice, much of the park is still accessible. Plus, there likely won’t be many other visitors there, and prices on accommodations will be just as low as they are in the winter season.
You won’t want to miss out on the chance to see the pinnacle of Montana’s beauty, so start planning your trip to Glacier National Park , making sure to check out these 10 incredible hikes .
13. Colorado Springs, Colorado
If you are dying to get outside after a long winter cooped up indoors, Colorado Springs is just the right March destination for you. Temperatures are warming up for the first time since the bitter cold of winter, but you can still expect to feel a little chilly, as the highs are around 55 degrees. Throw on a few layers and head outdoors for a visit to the Garden of the Gods to check out the astounding red rock formations that the Rocky Mountains are known for.
If it’s still too cold to imagine yourself hiking through Garden of the Gods, consider hopping on a 4×4 jeep tour to see more of the area than you would on foot. You can also drive through, but you’ll need a 4×4 vehicle to see the best spots. If you’re feeling extra brave, drive or hike up Pike’s Peak for some jaw-dropping views of the valley below.
14. Breckenridge, Colorado
If you’re one of those people that can’t get enough of winter, I respect you — but I certainly don’t understand you. I’m not a snow lover myself, but in the name of being inclusive of those who are, we have Breckenridge on this list. This wintry paradise actually gets its heaviest snowfall in March and April, making it the ideal time to visit if you want to hit these legendary slopes.
The sun really starts to shine in March after a cloudy a frigid winter, so you’ll enjoy skiing without having to bundle up nearly as much. That’s enough to convince a beach bum like me to make the trip there! Plus, there are loads of sweet events in the city to enjoy.
15. Texas Hill Country
We included Texas Hill Country on the Best Places to Visit in the USA in the Spring list because of the bluebonnets that are in full bloom during March and April. This area in the heart of the Lone Star State is an easy road trip from Dallas, Austin, or Houston. It’s known for its wide-open fields, glistening rivers, and rolling hills, which are flecked with brightly colored wildflowers in March.
Popular swimming holes like Hamilton Pool in Dripping Springs are wonderful to visit this month because of the warm temperatures and sunny days. You can also visit Pedernales Falls and Garner State Park or drive the Willow City Loop. If you’re coming from Austin or San Antonio, consider this full-day tour of Texas Hill Country that stops at the state’s best wineries, orchards, and towns.
16. New Orleans, Louisiana
Let’s face it, is there really a bad time to go to NOLA? Perhaps not, but I think March is an especially magical time to visit this incredible city. Mardi Gras falls on March 1 this year , so you can either catch the huge celebration or wait it out to avoid the crowds. Often the party continues until well after the actual date, so you’ll still be able to enjoy festivities all over town around this time.
New Orleans starts warming up in March, but the humidity hasn’t set in quite yet, and it isn’t as rainy as it is later in the spring, so you’ll catch some of the city’s best weather.
If you’re a solo traveler, don’t miss out on this solo female guide to New Orleans for all the best tips.
An awesome New Orleans itinerary
17. Chicago, Illinois
Sure, Chicago is still quite cold in March. But if you don’t mind layering up, this is a surprisingly great time to visit the Windy City. After all, where else can you see a river dyed bright green? Every March, the city makes the Chicago River green for St. Patrick’s Day (March 17) — truly a sight to behold.
However, the green river is just the tip of the iceberg of the day’s festivities. Chicago boasts one of the nation’s largest and wildest St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. Going to the parade is an exciting experience, as people crowd into every corner of downtown to see it.
If you want a more chill (as in more relaxed, not colder) visit to Chicago in March , avoid the St. Patrick’s Day crowds, and opt for a guided architecture cruise down the river instead. There’s plenty to do in Chicago for free if you want to save your hard-earned cash for more deep-dish pizza.
18. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
If you don’t mind exploring a thawing city, Philly is a great place to visit in March. The temperatures will still be nippy during this time of year, but many of the best attractions are indoors anyway. Art-peep at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts or Philadelphia Museum of Art, learn about Philly’s mobster history at the Eastern State Penitentiary, or see a French masterpiece at the Rodin Museum.
March produces thousands of cherry blossoms all around town, so venturing into the cold might be worth it to see these beauties in bloom.
Consider joining a donation-based walking tour like Free Tours by Foot to get a local’s perspective on Philly’s most prominent landmarks, or check out an outdoor art space like the Magic Gardens.
19. Finger Lakes Region, New York
March marks shoulder season in the Finger Lakes Region of upstate New York, meaning cheaper accommodations and a break from the usual crowds. Temperatures are still quite chilly, though, with highs around 45 degrees, so plan to bundle up if you’ll be heading out for a hike at Watkins Glen State Park. There’s a chance that Eagle Cliff Falls (see the photo above) might even still be partially frozen.
There are eleven lakes in this region, which is often compared to the wine-producing parts of Italy, since there are about 120 vineyards around the Finger Lakes, and many travelers venture there to taste the delicious wine.
20. Boston, Massachusetts
Since it has the biggest population of Irish descendants in the United States, it’s no surprise that Boston’s St. Patrick’s Day (March 17) is on another level. In fact, it falls on an official Boston holiday, Evacuation Day, which commemorates the ousting of British troops from the city in 1776. If you want to see the most epic St. Paddy’s Day celebration in the US, this is it!
Additionally, Boston is known to be the most walkable city in the country, and the mild chill of March is conducive for exploring this historic hub. Consider this walking tour to take advantage of all the sights.
21. Washington, DC
Our nation’s capital is known for its bright pink cherry blossoms that are just starting to bloom in March. Another perk of visiting this time of year is that there’s much more local produce, which you can enjoy at any of the farm-to-table restaurants that Asheville is known for.
The sun begins to come out in March after the gray skies of winter, heating up the area. Temperatures remain a little chilly, around 60 degrees during the day, so bring some layers with you.
23. Macon, Georgia

Macon is the cherry blossom capital of the world, and March is the absolute best time to see the blooms in all their pink glory. With 350,000 cherry trees blossoming each year at the end of the month, there’s no wonder Macon has earned this title. Visit the second or third week of March, during the International Cherry Blossom Festival , known as the “pinkest party of the year.”
In addition, Macon is both full of history and surrounded by beautiful state parks for those looking to get outdoors, so there’s plenty to do there.
24. Savannah, Georgia
If you’ve always wanted to visit Savannah but don’t want to deal with the heat and thick humidity, consider going oin March! The only thing to keep in mind is spring break usually falls in the latter half of March, which can be a crowded time to go.

Awesome photos (that Key West sunset not to mention the Northern Lights, blossoming grasslands and mountain shots) and nice summaries for each recommended place. Thanks for tapping two cities in Georgia in the “25 best” listing! Macon takes the cherry blossom season very seriously and it is quite the fun event!! March is a nice time of year to come visit, especially at the time of the festival, when temperatures are mild and we haven’t hit tree pollen season yet!

Tips for Enjoying the Best Cruise Destinations
Booking excursions in advance.
When it comes to enhancing your cruise experience, booking excursions in advance can be a game-changer. By planning your shore activities ahead of time, you can secure spots on popular tours, ensuring you don’t miss out on must-see attractions. Additionally, booking early often allows for discounted rates and guarantees availability, especially for excursions with limited capacity. Whether it’s snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean or exploring ancient ruins in the Mediterranean, arranging your excursions in advance ensures a smooth and stress-free adventure at each port of call.
Exploring Beyond the Beaten Path
For a truly memorable cruise experience, consider exploring beyond the beaten path at your destination ports. While popular tourist spots offer their charm, discovering hidden gems can provide unique insights into local culture and breathtaking scenery away from the crowds. Venture into quaint villages, interact with locals, or embark on nature hikes to uncover hidden treasures that offer a more authentic and immersive travel experience. Whether it’s stumbling upon a secluded beach in Thailand or savoring local cuisine in a less-known Mediterranean town, stepping off the typical tourist trail can lead to unforgettable moments and create lasting memories of your cruise journey.
