Le Rochelle

Thank you for referring us to La Rochelle. It's a small quaint hotel that is perfect for couples who want to get away from it all. Unfortunately their gardens were not in full bloom yet but they show some wonderful potential. The staff were very friendly indeed. There is need upgrades on a few of their amenities but on the whole it was a wonderful experience.

Moscow might be one of the world's most exciting cities, an embodiment of the intricate fusion of the old and the new. You will definitely be able to fill your time here with history, art, culture, and great food. Visit the many churches and cathedrals, enjoy a show at the Bolshoi Theatre, or go for a walk in one of the city's many parks – Moscow certainly has many ways to enchant you.

Children are the Victims of Adult Vices Sculptures

It is truly an adventure to go out for dinner in Moscow. The city teems with extravagant themed restaurants where one is transported through both time and space. You may suddenly find yourself in Thailand, on a farm or in the past century. If you want to have good food and spend less, you can go to some of the city’s many Georgian and Armenian restaurants. There are also food chains such as Moo-Moo and Yolki-Palki, where you can serve yourself inexpensive, simple Russian fare. For most restaurants, it is recommended to book a table in advance. Discover some of the best restaurants in Moscow, Russia:

Restaurant Expedition

Moscow is a city teeming with cafes that suit all tastes and wallets. In the summer, city parks turn into visitor magnets with abundant outdoor cafes - the recently re-conceptualised and ever-evolving Gorky Park being one of the main summertime hot spots. Outside of parks, there are multiple cafes at nearly every corner, ranging from local and international coffee shop chains to quirky themed establishments. Here are some of the best cafes in Moscow, Russia:

Coffeemania

Bars & Nightlife

The nightlife scene in Moscow is varied, and long gone are the days when the only kind of venues in operation were luxury establishments guarded by stern-looking bouncers. Although some places still enforce FC/DC, many are now leaning towards a more casual approach to entry - the recent decade has seen a rise in the number of casual bars modelled after hip urban haunts of West European capitals. Wine bars, craft breweries, bohemian cafes, indie bars, and glitzy nightclubs are all to be found in abundance, spread throughout the city's many neighbourhoods. And here are the best bars and nightclubs in Moscow, Russia:

Strelka

In order to satisfy the wishes of Moscow's well-off upper middle classes, many chic designer stores have opened their stores in Moscow. Today there is definitely a risk that tourists will return home with considerably more expensive souvenirs than fur hats and Russian "matryoshka" dolls, which are readily available throughout - a good place to start browsing for these is the souvenir market right next to the Red Square.

Celebrity ascent: the best dining, amenities and more on celebrity cruises' newest ship.

Top-notch eateries, adults-only areas and entertainment options stand out.

Celebrity Ascent Review

The Solarium on the Celebrity Ascent.

Megan duBois

Key Takeaways

  • There are 32 different dining and drinking venues on board, from Le Voyage by celebrity chef Daniel Boulud to the line's iconic Martini Bar.
  • The onboard entertainment is incredible. The "Awaken" show combines popular music with acrobatics and lasers, while Ascent After Dark: Shine the Night invites cruisers to don metallic or sequin outfits for a deck party under the stars.
  • The Solarium adults-only pool area is a relaxing spot with comfortable lounge chairs, a pool and hot tubs; head to Eden for delightful cocktails and optimal sunset views.

You can think of Celebrity Cruises as the more adult cousin of Royal Caribbean International – which makes sense, considering both cruise lines are owned by Royal Caribbean Group. With all of the recent buzz around both brands, I was excited to sail on Celebrity Cruises' newest ship, Celebrity Ascent, in its debut month. I embarked out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in December 2023.

The 17-deck, 141,420-ton ship has 1,646 staterooms and can carry 3,260 guests at double occupancy. At 1,073 feet long and 128 feet wide, the ship has plenty of space for upscale amenities, edgy entertainment and incredible dining venues. The Edge Series ship also has more than 1,400 crew members who hail from 60 different countries around the world.

As an avid cruiser who has taken more than 50 ocean and river voyages on almost a dozen cruise lines, I found Celebrity Ascent lived up to the hype. The ship itself is stunning, and each area has a distinct vibe. I loved the ample amount of food and drink opportunities – there are 32 different venues – and the standout onboard entertainment was like nothing I had seen before on a cruise ship.

Celebrity Ascent itineraries

Thermal suite heated loungers on the Celebrity Ascent.

Celebrity Ascent sails around the Mediterranean and the Caribbean over the next few years. Summer 2024 brings Ascent to Mediterranean ports of call in Greece, Turkey, Italy, France, Spain and Portugal. The Mediterranean season ends in October 2024, with a 13-night transatlantic sailing departing from Barcelona, Spain.

Late fall and winter sailings depart from Fort Lauderdale. The Caribbean season runs between November 2024 and April 2025. It includes seven- to nine-night voyages calling on ports like Aruba , Bonaire and Curacao ; Bimini, Bahamas ; Labadee, Haiti; Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands ; Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic ; and St. Maarten and St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

In late April 2025, it's back to the Mediterranean for the 2025 season between May and October. Ascent then returns to the Caribbean for sailings in late 2025; destinations include southern Caribbean locales, plus the Panama Canal and Royal Caribbean's private island in the Bahamas, Perfect Day at CocoCay. Similar Caribbean sailings are also on sale for early 2026.

Who should sail on Celebrity Ascent?

Sunset Bar on the Celebrity Ascent.

Celebrity Ascent, like its Edge Series sister ships, caters to adults traveling together. The overall vibe of the ship is upscale and modern, with plenty of places to grab a drink, enjoy a meal and watch a show. Couples can enjoy an elevated date night in Le Grand Bistro, while the aptly named Sunset Bar – which overlooks the rear of the ship – is the spot to be with a cocktail in hand as the sun sets into the horizon. This bar was easily my favorite spot on board; I spent most afternoons here enjoying a cocktail.

The deck parties, of which Ascent After Dark: Shine the Night is the premier event, are a fun time – but they aren't so loud that guests can hear the bass thumping in the staterooms below. Shows at The Theatre are fully immersive, with incredible technology and great music that had me dancing in my seat.

If you are traveling with children, know that there aren't many places on board for kids to just hang out and be kids. The Camp at Sea kids club is crammed into a small area on Deck 3, away from the main Grand Plaza and The Martini Bar.

Cruises on Ascent can be expensive, but Celebrity often runs deals on sailings. Without any promotions, sailings around the Mediterranean in 2024 and 2025 may run between about $1,000 and $5,600 per person. In comparison, 2024 and 2025 Caribbean voyages may cost between about $2,000 and $4,400 per person before discounts. (Note: Cruise rates can change frequently, based on demand and availability.)

The stateroom

Stateroom interior on the Celebrity Ascent.

There are over two dozen different stateroom styles on Celebrity Ascent. The smallest (and usually cheapest) rooms are the Inside Staterooms, which offer between 181 and 202 square feet of space. For solo travelers, the Single Inside Staterooms offer the same amenities as a double occupancy room, but with a smaller 103-square-foot layout and no single supplement fee at booking.

Ocean View Staterooms are slightly larger, at 200 to 242 square feet. There are three different room styles; the main difference among them is the size of the window. Options range from small windows in the middle of the wall to large, floor-to-ceiling picture windows.

Ascent's balcony cabins are quite varied, but the majority are Infinite Veranda Staterooms, where the balcony is actually a uniquely designed window that can be opened to let the ocean breeze in. There is a set of glass doors that can be drawn to make this space more private, as well.

Concierge Staterooms allow guests access to a dedicated concierge staff and exclusive onboard events. AquaClass cabins all feature the infinite balcony design, plus unlimited access to the SEA Thermal Suite, complimentary dining at Blu restaurant, fitness classes and a spa concierge.

Celebrity Ascent's suites are all part of The Retreat, the line's ship-within-a-ship concept where cruisers have access to an exclusive restaurant, a sun deck with a pool, a lounge and a dedicated crew. Suites range in size and style, from smaller 319-square-foot studios to massive two-bedroom suites offering more than 2,500 square feet of indoor and outdoor space.

When I sailed on Celebrity Ascent, I stayed in an AquaClass stateroom. The main living space had a king-size bed, which was cozy after long days of exploring the ship and nights spent on the dance floor. I found the cabin's couch a bit uncomfortable, but there was plenty of storage space in the large closet and drawers. Conveniently, the bed was high enough to fit my suitcases under.

Because this was my first time in an Infinite Veranda room, I was interested to see how the balcony actually worked. After pressing a button for the window to roll down, my room instantly filled with humid air – not the sea breeze I was expecting. The air conditioner also turns off when the window is down, so it takes a long time for the room to cool off again. I only opened the window once because of this. For me, the extra veranda space served as more of a sitting area to take in the views than a spot to enjoy the ocean breeze.

My stateroom's bathroom was spacious, with a larger-than-usual standup rain shower. I also loved the eco-friendly bath amenities, which smelled divine. I used the in-room bathrobes and slippers every day of the cruise.

I loved that my AquaClass stateroom came with some amenities that are not included in other Infinite Veranda rooms. There were two yoga mats, two bottles of water that were refreshed daily, a welcome bottle of sparkling wine, an umbrella, binoculars, complimentary shoeshine service and a pillow menu. AquaClass guests also have unlimited access to the spa's thermal suite, complimentary fitness classes and a dedicated spa concierge. I went to the thermal suite daily to enjoy the heated loungers and steam rooms.

Best amenities on Celebrity Ascent

Theater show on the Celebrity Ascent.

On Celebrity Ascent, you'll never be bored. Over just a few days, I was able to participate in game shows and dance parties, sit back and enjoy live music, and spend some time by the pool. While I don't gamble, the casino always seemed to be full when I walked by, and someone was always cheering about hitting the jackpot.

For live entertainment, be sure to catch Flash Flair Fusion, the nightly bartending performance at the Martini Bar. Meanwhile, the Theatre hosted three main shows during my sailing: "Residency," "Awaken" and "Bridges." (Based on my experience, "Awaken" is the production to prioritize.)

Additionally, The Club hosts most of the ship's game shows and some smaller live music events. I loved hanging out at this venue; it was never overly packed with people, and the games were pure fun. I even got called up on stage to participate in one of the games and ended up winning a Celebrity Cruises-branded hat.

For some outdoor fun, hit the onboard pickleball court. Or, head to the Rooftop Garden, where float pools face the ocean and plenty of comfy seating awaits. I loved how lush this space felt, thanks to all of the live plants surrounding the seating areas. This is also the spot to catch movies at night.

If you're looking for an even more unique place to hang out, head to The Magic Carpet. This bright orange, glass-encased bar hangs out over the side of the ship and is the perfect spot for an after-dinner drink. The Magic Carpet can move up and down the side of the ship, docking at select decks for a set amount of time. I loved hanging here at night as the ship was pulling out of port to see the islands light up and watch other ships pass by.

When planning out your evenings, keep in mind that it can be a trek to get from one onboard activity to the next – especially when there is very little time between many of the major scheduled events. One night, I started in The Club to watch a game show, then immediately had to get to the Theatre. After the theater performance, I had to walk the entire length of the ship and take the stairs to get to the night show in Eden. Then, after Eden, it was time for the Shine the Night deck party. By the time I got back to my stateroom, I was exhausted.

Best dining venues on Celebrity Ascent

Pastries at Le Grand Bistro on the Celebrity Ascent.

There are 32 different spots for food and drinks on Celebrity Ascent, including four main dining rooms; four casual complimentary eateries; eight specialty restaurants; 14 cafes, lounges and bars; and two exclusive venues.

Included with the base fare are meals at the four main dining rooms, all of which serve the same menus every day, plus a small exclusive menu that's tailored to the theme of each restaurant. (For example, if you're dining in Cyprus, there is a small list of Cyprus-exclusive dishes that highlight Mediterranean cuisine, while the Normandie restaurant serves up French favorites.)

Other restaurants included in the cruise rate are Eden Cafe & Bar, which serves light bites and sweets; Mast Grill, offering burgers and salads; and Oceanview Cafe, a buffet open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

For an additional cost, head to specialty dining venues like the stunning Le Voyage by Daniel Boulud, which is great for date night; Le Grand Bistro, a fun take on a classic French Bistro; or Eden Restaurant, which features an entirely plant-based menu.

My favorite specialty dining option – and overall favorite restaurant on the ship – was Raw on 5. It features stunning chilled seafood towers, fresh sashimi and hot dishes like fresh lobster and shrimp wontons. Each dish was prepared beautifully, the service was top-notch and our table next to the window offered great views.

However, one restaurant I would skip is Fine Cut Steakhouse. It is a pretty standard steakhouse, and nothing on the menu really stood out to me. The upscale ambiance was also diminished by music floating in from the nearby Grand Plaza and Martini Bar (think: everything from One Direction to Cher). While both artists are great to hear while sipping a martini in a public space, I don't want to hear them while dining at an expensive restaurant.

Best excursions on Celebrity Ascent

Outdoor sundeck on the Celebrity Ascent.

Travelers cruising to the Caribbean should book a beach outing. There are abundant excursion options in St. Maarten and St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands . If you're into local brews, try the Small Group: Brewery & Beach Tour Philipsburg, St. Maarten .

On a past Mediterranean cruise, I explored both Florence and Pisa, Italy, while docked in the Italian city of Livorno. Celebrity offers a similar excursion aboard the Ascent. The day trip includes a scenic drive through the Tuscan countryside; exploring Florence and seeing the Ponte Vecchio and the Duomo; and a trip to Pisa to see the iconic learning tower. In Rome , consider doing an all-day tour where you can see the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain and St. Peter's Square.

Regardless of where your cruise is headed, you may choose to explore ports on your own instead. If that's the case, be sure to give yourself enough time to get back to the ship. I always try to return at least an hour before the scheduled sail away time.

Overall impressions of Celebrity Ascent

Rooftop Garden on the Celebrity Ascent.

When it comes to ships that cater to a mostly adult audience, Celebrity Ascent really has it all. From stunning common areas to incredible dining and entertainment, I was never bored on this ship. What I loved most was the wide range of entertainment, from pop-up music around the ship to full-blown experiences that need to be seen to be believed. The food on the ship is a step above most other major cruise lines, and the number of dining options is great, especially for longer sailings.

While I loved my room's location and amenities as a whole, I found the Infinite Veranda design to be a bit of a waste. When I did use it, my room got hot quickly and took a while to cool back down. I would consider booking a traditional veranda cabin next time, or a stateroom with a large picture window to save some money without sacrificing the ocean views.

Moscow Travel Guide: Best Things to Do + More [2023]

· everything to know about visiting moscow, including the best things to do and how to get around. ·.

the red st basils church in moscow on a white winters day

Moscow is Russia’s vibrant capital city, and it also happens to be the largest city in all of Europe. The city’s long and infamous history makes it one of the most unique places we have ever visited.

The architecture ranges from centuries-old palaces to uniform, gray concrete buildings. The people range from cold and private to warm and welcoming. Moscow is a city is strong juxtapositions, and we learned a lot during our time there.

This post will break down all you need to know about visiting Moscow, including the best things to do, how to get there, how to get around, and more.

The Best Things to Do in Moscow

1. explore the red square.

The Red Square is the heart of Moscow. Most of the city’s top attractions can be found here, including just about everything on this list. The Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral, and Lenin’s Mausoleum are all located here, and the State Historical Museum and GUM are not far from here, either.

The Red Square is a common home for parades, protests, and seasonal celebrations. There are massive Christmas celebrations here, with food vendors and carnival rides set up in numbers.

2. Check Out the Ziferblat

The Ziferblat is a café in Moscow that is unlike any café we have ever been to. While most cafes charge you for your drinks and food, the Ziferblat charges you for your time.

Upon arrival, you are given a clock. When you leave, the barista calculates how much time you spent in the café and charges you accordingly. This concept was created to help visitors to be more intentional with their time, and the cafe itself is incredibly charming.

For a detailed look at everything you need to know before you visit, make sure you read my post about visiting the Ziferblat Cafe in Moscow .

3. Marvel at St. Basil’s Cathedral

St. Basil’s Cathedral is one of the most iconic churches in the world, and it was the single thing we were most excited to see while in Moscow. Built almost 500 years ago, St. Basil’s Cathedral is recognized by its colorful domes and whimsical style. The church is of the Russian Orthodox faith, and the inside is just as wondrous as the outside.

St. Basil’s Cathedral is located on the edge of the Red Square, making it incredibly convenient to visit. Entrance for non-worshippers costs 800 rubles, and tickets can be bought at the church

4. Explore the Kremlin

The Kremlin is the largest active fortress in Europe, and it is the site of most of Russia’s government affairs. In addition to government buildings, the Kremlin Complex is filled with courtyards, towers, and museums that are open to the public. If you have the time, you could spend a couple of days fully exploring all that there is to see in the Kremlin.

5. Walk Through Lenin’s Mausoleum

Vladimir Lenin is one of the most important figures in Russian history, and his body is located perfectly embalmed in a mausoleum in the Red Square. The Mausoleum is open to the public to visit, and as long as you are willing to go through a few security checks, it is easily one of the best things to do in Moscow. Its convenient location in the Red Square makes it a can’t miss attraction.

There is absolutely no photography allowed inside the Mausoleum. Do not test this rule.

6. Wander Along Arbat Street

The Arbat is a very popular street in Moscow that is lined with stores, cafes, and other touristy attractions. It is one of the oldest streets in the city, dating back to the 1400s. This street is both quaint and trendy, and there are many walking tours that introduce tourists to the neighborhood’s wonders and highlights.

7. Catch a Show at the Bolshoi Theatre

As a lover of the arts, it is hard to think of Moscow and not think of ballet. Russia has always been a top dog in the world of fine arts, and Bolshoi Theater is one of the best places to catch a performance. We were lucky enough to attend an Opera here, and it is a venue that you don’t want to miss out on if you enjoy opera, ballet, or orchestral performances.

8. Visit the State Historical Museum

The State Historical Museum is one of the most respected museums in Moscow. Despite its name, it is not really focused on the history of Russia as a nation. Rather, it contains a collection of artifacts from all throughout Russia’s history.

The museum’s collection is very broad in nature. It houses some items from indigenous tribes that used to occupy the region, pieces collected by the Romanov family, and more.

9. Wander Around GUM

GUM is an absolutely massive mall within walking distance of the Red Square. It isn’t just the size that draws visitors here; it’s the sense of luxury. The mall is so beautiful inside, much like the metro stations.

While visiting a mall might not sound like it belongs on a bucket list, this mall does. You will not want to miss out on visiting GUM while in Moscow.

10. Admire the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour

While St. Basil’s Cathedral is the most iconic church in Moscow, it isn’t the only one. The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is absolutely stunning, with massive golden domes. It is the tallest Orthodox church in the world, and it is the seat of the Orthodox Patriarch of Moscow.

It is located just about a mile from the Red Square, just south of the Kremlin Complex. You can walk to it from the Red Square in about 20 minutes.

How to Get to Moscow

Flying to moscow.

Moscow has three major international airports: Sheremetyevo (SVO) , Domodedovo (DMO) , and Vnukovo (VKO) . All three of them are directly connected to downtown Moscow by the Aeroexpress trains, which leave every 30 minutes throughout the day. By Aeroexpress train, you can expect to get to the city center in 25-45 minutes depending on the airport that you fly into.

Sheremetyevo is the biggest and busiest of the three airports, and it is the one you are most likely to fly into – especially if you are coming from outside of Europe or the Caucus region. We flew into Sheremetyevo on a direct flight from New York City.

I usually provide backup airport options, because flying right into the city isn’t always the cheapest way to get where you’re going. Unfortunately, when it comes to Moscow, don’t really have a choice other than to fly right into Moscow. It is a very remote city, and it is usually the cheapest place to fly into in Russia as a whole.

Since Sheremetyevo is so busy, you will probably find a great flight option anyway. I wrote in  my post about finding cheap flights  that using hub airports will lead to more affordable airfare, and the same logic applies here. Even though Russia’s national airline, Aeroflot, is no longer a member of the SkyTeam Alliance, Moscow is still a major hub connecting passengers from all over the world.

Train or Bus to Moscow

Trains and buses are one of the most popular ways to get around Europe. However, they’re of very little use when you’re trying to get to Moscow.

Moscow is hundreds of miles from the nearest major cities. The only major European city that can even be reached within 8 hours on the ground is St. Petersburg, and even the Baltic capitals of Riga, Vilnius, and Tallinn are over 12 hours away.

If you want to get to Moscow, the best option is almost always to fly. While the train routes to Moscow are scenic, they simply take forever.

How to Get Around Moscow

METRO | TROLLEYS | TRAMS | BUSES

Moscow has one of the most memorable metro systems in the world. Its metro lines are very deep underground, and the stations are absolutely stunning. Each station has its own unique style, but all of them contain escalators that seem to go on forever.

turned-on chandelier on ceiling of moscow metro

The system was built in an effort to showcase the power of the Soviet Union and its bright future. The plans were a form of propaganda, but they resulted in what is still one of the most visually appealing subway systems on earth.

Moscow’s metro system isn’t just pretty. It is also very useful and accessible. The system has 17 lines that connect the city and its surrounding area.

But wait; there’s more!

The Moscow metro system is also incredibly affordable, with each ride costing less than a dollar. The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow, as it is almost impossible to beat the connection times and the low cost to ride.

Tickets can be bought at electronic, English-speaking kiosks in stations, or directly from ticket counters at certain larger stations. There are also day passes available, which are a very solid option if you plan on riding the metro several times per day.

The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow.

In addition to the metro system, Moscow also has a network of buses, trams, and trolleys. This system is nowhere near as convenient or well-connected as the metro, though, and is likely of little use to you during your trip. There is no Uber in Moscow, but a similar app named Yandex is available if you need a ride in a pinch.

How Many Days Do You Need in Moscow?

Moscow is the biggest city in all of Europe, and it is absolutely loaded with things to do. You could spend weeks in Moscow and still find new things to do. Of course, most travelers don’t have that kind of time to spend in one place!

I recommend spending no less than three full days in Moscow, and ideally closer to five or seven.

Moscow is very spread out, and it can take some time to get from one major point to another. There are also so many places that are nice to just sit back and relax, which is hard to do when you’re in a hurry trying to cram activities into just a few days.

If you only have a week to visit Russia, I’d advise spending all of the time in one city. If you decide to split your time between Moscow and St. Petersburg, I recommend not trying to squeeze in any day trips beyond those two cities.

When Is the Best Time of the Year to Visit Moscow?

There are two different ways to approach this question. Personally, I think the best time to visit Moscow is around Christmas and New Year’s Day. While the weather will be absolutely freezing, Moscow is a surreal winter wonderland in December and January.

We were in Moscow right before Christmas. While it was very cold, you can always bundle up. Exploring the Christmas markets and pop-up ice skating rinks throughout Moscow is one of my favorite memories from anywhere I’ve traveled, and I dream of going back to do it again.

If you aren’t fond of the cold, Moscow is beautiful in the summer. It tends to get pretty cold in the shoulder seasons, so if you want warm weather, you should plan to visit in the summer. Moscow actually gets pretty warm in July and August, and there are a bunch of fantastic places to soak up the sun within the city.

The best time to visit Moscow is either around Christmas or from late May to August.

Is Moscow Safe to Visit?

While Moscow is a truly wonderful city, there’s no denying that visiting Russia comes with risks. As the country is run by an infamous communist dictator, concerns about visiting are valid. While we didn’t experience any sort of threat or negative treatment during our time in Moscow, we visited in a peaceful time.

In our experience, Russia doesn’t seem to detain normal Americans or Westerners to use as pawns. As a regular person, as long as you don’t commit any crimes, there is a slim chance you will run into any issues. However, Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

To make matters worse, Russia has a bad reputation for gang violence. While the Russian mafia has very little interest in normal Western tourists, they won’t hesitate to pick a fight with anyone who ventures into their sphere of influence. If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

Finally, since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, things are all very different. Russia is currently at war, and there are battles raging within 8 hours of Moscow. While it is still relatively safe to visit, that could change at any time as the war with Ukraine continues.

Is Moscow Worth Visiting?

Without a doubt, Moscow is worth visiting. It is one of the most unique major cities we have ever visited, and we hope to make it back one day. The Russian Orthodox churches are stunning, the city’s history is unlike any other, and the food is to die for.

While many visitors prefer St. Petersburg to Moscow, I think Moscow deserves a lot of hype of its own. Moscow is the beating heart of Russian culture and history, and it’s a place I highly recommend checking out if you have the chance.

CVG adds more nonstop flights to help boost travel at airport

by Paige Barnes, WKRC

(WKRC)

CINCINNATI (WKRC) - More nonstop flights are taking off from CVG.

Starting on Tuesday, Southwest Airlines officially offered a direct service to Nashville. This stop added to the 55 other destinations already flying out of CVG.

CVG's plan is to add destinations for people to checkout without the hassle of connecting to another flight. And this isn't the end, there are more destinations to come.

"I would say additional service to San Francisco would be a priority for us. Additional service just to the West Coast in general. I think that we have a lot of the East Coast covered. We have plenty of service to Florida," said CVG Airport Director of Communications Mindy Kershner.

Kershner said that 70% of their travelers fly direct. The nonstop service played a big factor for Noah Buttermore when he was deciding where to go.

"The farther they can get for direct flights would be so big, I mean, anywhere on the West Coast, San Diego, Denver, places like that. I know some airlines go out that way, but yeah, just any place as far as you can get in a direct flight I would go," Buttermore said while catching his flight to Seattle.

Brumberg-Kraus said she and her husband sometimes choose to drive 14 hours from Providence to visit their family here rather than fly.

"We don't have to deal with the problem of worrying about whether or not we're going to make our connections and all the hassles. So, we just decided by the time we do all that, we might as well drive," said Maia Brumberg-Kraus as she was flying home to Providence.

Frontier added eight flights, Breeze added two, and Southwest Airlines added one more. All of this is an effort to attract people to choose their home airport rather than driving elsewhere.

"We actually now have people traveling from outside of our region to come and take flights like the London service. So, it's a huge benefit," Kershner said.

CVG offers direct flights to London and Paris. Throughout the summer, Delta will fly daily to Paris. Kershner said that more destinations and frequency will help grow the airport. So, things are looking up for CVG from when Delta pulled its hub.

"The hub activity did generate a lot of flights and a lot of passenger traffic. A lot of that traffic was connecting through CVG, and it wasn't as much of our local, what we kind of call 'origin destination traffic,'" Kershner said.

The airport has also worked to grow its cargo hub. DHL and Amazon are already there. Kershner said that the additional revenue from landing fees helps keep costs down for the commercial flyer.

Why the journey is the destination when it comes to Alaska cruises

infinite destinations travel

They say getting there is half the fun. Usually, I disagree. When I travel, I want to get to where I’m going as quickly as possible to make the most of my time there. However, sailing Celebrity Edge on its maiden Alaska voyage from Seattle, I was all about the journey.

Staring up at the snow-capped mountains through the ship’s floor-to-ceiling windows and watching for wildlife in the icy waters below, I was mesmerized by the famed Last Frontier. And I realized that on an Alaska cruise , the journey is a destination.

Here’s why and what travelers should know about cruising Alaska.

Why is Alaska a popular cruise destination?

Alaska is a bucket-list destination for many people. Some may wait their whole lives for the trip. While Alaska Airlines and other carriers fly throughout America’s largest state , it isn’t as easy to navigate as the Lower 48.

Cruises allow travelers to visit multiple destinations without taking separate flights, renting a car or moving from hotel to hotel. My Edge itinerary included stops in Ketchikan, which is surrounded by the lush Tongass National Forest ; the state capital of Juneau, which is only accessible by air or sea; and Skagway, home of Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park . The ship also carefully navigated the stunning Endicott Arm fjord toward Dawes Glacier, a highlight of the trip.

The easy trip can also be more accessible for people with mobility issues and other disabilities. Like other cruise lines, Celebrity has a team dedicated to accessible cruising . Numerous guests on board my sailing used walkers, canes or wheelchairs. Plus, it’s just nice to be able to take in the dramatic coastlines from the comfort of a cozy cabin or lounge when it’s chilly outside.

Are cruises to Alaska worth it?

They can be. At last check, the lowest price on a seven-night Celebrity Edge Alaska Dawes Glacier sailing, roundtrip from Seattle, for the remainder of this summer is listed at $778 per person on the cruise line’s website, based on double occupancy in an inside stateroom. That does not include travel to or from Seattle nor any taxes or fees, which can balloon the bottom line on any cruise. Nor does it include promotional discounts, which are pretty much always available. After taxes and fees, that works to about $2,212 for two people or $1,106 per person.

The cheapest seven-night Southbound Glacier sailing on the Edge’s sister ship, Celebrity Summit , is much less at $249 per person, based on double occupancy in an inside stateroom. It’s worth noting the Southbound voyage goes from Seward, Alaska, to Vancouver, British Columbia, not a round trip. Also the Summit is not an Edge-class ship , The Celebrity Edge is the first Edge class ship to sail Alaska; it was also the first ship in Celebrity’s most recent series, which also includes the new Celebrity Ascent . Edge-class ships were designed to bring guests closer than ever to their destinations, with their signature Magic Carpet cantilevered platform that extends beyond the ship’s edge and other features that bring the outside in. After taxes and fees, the Summit sailing adds up to about $1,231 for two people or about $615 a person.

Both are cheaper than flying between cities and staying at hotels for a week in Alaska, but they're also cheaper than other popular vacations. For example, seven nights at Disney’s All-Star Sports Resort , a value resort at Walt Disney World , costs $955 for the room alone, including taxes and a summer promo deal. Adding seven days of park tickets, without park hopping, and the total becomes $2,195 for two people or about $1,098 per person, excluding food.

Meanwhile, cruises include all onboard meals – except optional specialty dining and alcohol. There are also a boatload of included activities, like nature talks, tai chi classes, guided arts and crafts, trivia, games and childcare. There’s live music available through the day and nightly stage shows. I sampled a little bit of everything, but for me, the best part of the ship was the views.

Inside Ascent: 3 takeaways from Celebrity Cruises' new ship

Do you see wildlife on an Alaskan cruise?

Yes. I saw whale spouts three times from the ship, though the whales didn’t breach above water. I also saw a handful of harbor seals and a dozen eagles from the ship and from shore. Bald eagles are so common in Alaska that a tour bus driver jokingly called them bald seagulls. There are 30,000 bald eagles in the state, according to the Alaska Department of Fish & Game.

I kept an eye out for bears on an excursion to Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau, which is managed by the U.S. Forest Service. I didn’t see any walking along the paved, wheelchair-accessible Nugget Falls Trail, but I did spot all sorts of spring buds and the most beautiful moss.

The ship’s onboard naturalist gave us a heads-up on what to look for and taught us about various species in presentations in the ship’s theater. She also broadcasted live on the ship’s TV channel and inside speakers while traveling through the Endicott Arm. However, her voice wasn’t carried on outside speakers to avoid potentially disturbing wildlife.

What is the best month to go on a cruise to Alaska?

The Alaska cruise season runs from late April to early October, though dates vary by cruise line. Guests who sail early or late in the season may find lower rates than during the height of the summer, but they may miss out on warmer weather.

It was in the 40s to 50s most days of my May sailing, and it rained on our Juneau day. The onboard naturalist warned that there is no bad weather in Alaska, only poor clothing choices.

How much should I budget for an Alaskan cruise?

You should pad your budget with several hundred extra dollars for excursions and dining off-ship. Both can be pricey but enriching. My Mendenhall Glacier excursion was just under $130, including transportation and an off-site Gold Creek Salmon Bake , with all-you-can-eat fresh salmon cooked over a wood-burning fire.  I’ve never had better fried fish than the local halibut at The Alaska Fish House in Ketchikan, and I will be dreaming of the sweet, plump red king crab at Tracy’s King Crab Shack in Juneau for years to come.  If you want freshly caught Alaska seafood, you’ll want to get it at port.

You may be able to spot whales from the cruise ship, but if you really want to go whale watching, salmon fishing, dog sledding, or get up close to glaciers, that’s generally going to require an excursion. Excursions offered through cruise lines tend to cost more than those booked independently, but booking through the cruise line can streamline payment and ensure that the ship won’t leave without you if the excursion runs late.

One port you can enjoy on the cheap is Skagway. You can explore several exhibits and historic buildings on your own, as part of Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park. However many visitors splurge on a scenic train ride on the White Pass and Yukon Route Railway up to the Canadian border and back.

Is it worth getting a balcony on a cruise?

Yes and no. The views throughout Alaska are breathtaking, and being able to enjoy them from your cabin any time of day feels luxurious. I loved waking up to mountains, thick with trees, outside my window and scanning the waters for marinelife before bed.

Just over 80% of Celebrity Edge’s staterooms have a balcony. I had an Infinite Veranda , which is unique to Edge-class ships. Rather than a traditional balcony with a sliding glass door, Infinite Verandas incorporate what would be exterior balcony space into the interior of the cabin and have a window that slides halfway down the exterior wall with the push of a button. I loved how much bigger it made the cabin feel and appreciated the extra climate-controlled living space. It was still chilly during my early season sailing, so I rarely put the window down and think I would have enjoyed a non-balcony, oceanview room just as much.

Of course, if you book an inside cabin, you can still enjoy the scenery from public areas of any ship. The Celebrity Edge brings the outside in with tons of windows, including in the buffet restaurant, Oceanview Cafe, where I spotted my first whale spout. In the back of the ship, there’s a relaxing mixed-use space called Eden with three stories of windows that I found myself drawn to daily. The solarium, with its tall windows and rows of lounge chairs, also offered expansive views.

Do I need a passport for an Alaskan cruise?

Maybe. For a closed-loop cruise that starts and ends in the same U.S. port, like the one I was on, all you need is proof of citizenship.

“According to U.S. Customs & Border Protection, this includes an Enhanced Driver’s License, which is a state-issued driver’s license that provides proof of identity and U.S. citizenship; a government-issued birth certificate (issued by the Vital Records Department in the state where the person was born) or passport; and if 16 or older, a government-issued driver’s license or picture ID denoting photo, name, and date of birth,” according to Celebrity.

Of course, not all Alaska cruises are closed-loop cruises. Some start or end in Vancouver, Canada. There are also cruises on several smaller U.S.-flagged cruise lines like Alaska Dream Cruises and Uncruise Adventures , which may not require passports depending on the itinerary.

Can you see the Northern Lights on an Alaska cruise?

It’s possible, but because daylight hours are so long during the summer in Alaska, the best chance to see them would be on a cruise late in the season.

I woke up in the middle of the night a few times to look for Northern Light. I didn’t see any, but I heard passengers on a previous sailing spotted them. Then again, so did people all across the country during the solar storm earlier this month.

The reporter on this story received access from Celebrity Cruises. USA TODAY maintains editorial control of reviews.

How to take great photos at night

With the right tools and a plan of action, anyone can capture the beauty of the moon and stars at night. Let professional photographer Keith Ladzinski show you how.

When we look at the stars, it's like staring into a campfire. There's a hypnotic quality to it; our imagination starts to wander. Thoughts about how small we are in the vastness of space and emotions of wonder, excitement, and desire to explore all bubble up. With night photography, we can harness the backdrop of the infinite sky to create a sense of expanse, both in time and space.

( See Nat Geo’s best pictures of 2023 .)

I’ve been a professional photographer for 20 years, with some of my most beloved images taken at night. Here are my tips for taking great photographs at night.

Scout during the day

During the day, plan at the spot you plan to land at night. This is where you design your composition. A subject with a lot of negative space (like an old tree without leaves or a cliff line with a jagged cut) can frame the night sky beautifully. Use an app like PhotoPills which can help you see how the moon and stars will travel across the sky during your shoot.

Bring the right gear

Whether you’re shooting on a smartphone or high-end SLR, make sure you have a sturdy tripod, a headlamp (or any other lighting), and warmer clothing than needed in the day (especially in the desert). I also recommend a cable release wire to trigger the shutter remotely, so you don’t need to handle your camera especially during long exposures. Also, bring a lens warmer to prevent fog.

Don’t forget the moon

One of the best aspects of night photography is the ability to set up a scene from a sort of blank slate. Because it’s dark, you can customize your lighting. That’s why I prefer to shoot when the moon is only a sliver in the sky, or a new moon. The moon creates a lot of ambient light—think of it as a dim sun. When it’s more than a sliver, be sure to consider it in your composition.

Beware of over-editing

After a shoot, the best photographers will tweak white balance, lift shadows, bring highlights down, etc. But be careful not to overwork it. At the end of the day, your highest priority is making an image you like. If you're feeling like it's being pushed too hard in postproduction, then that's a good opportunity for you to go out into the field and try it again and get it closer to your vision.

Methodology

Annual fee: $95

Welcome offer: Earn 75,000 bonus miles after spending $4,000 within the first 3 months

APR: 19.99%-29.99% variable APR

5x miles on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel

2x miles on all other purchases

Recommended credit score: Good to Excellent

Why this is the best card for beginners

For beginners to points and miles, simplicity can be key to maximizing rewards. We like the Venture card not only for its great potential value, but how easy it is to earn miles on everything at a rate of 2x per dollar. Redemption is also simple: You can redeem miles through Capital One’s travel portal or use them to cover any travel purchases you make with your card. Plus, it has the same welcome offer as the much higher-priced Venture X card — worth up to $750 when you redeem for travel.

While ongoing benefits aren’t the most lucrative part of this card, there are some to keep in mind. You’ll get up to $100 every four years toward TSA PreCheck or Global Entry fees, elite status with Hertz rental cars, up to a $50 experience credit when you book Lifestyle Collection hotel stays through Capital One Travel, and more.

Annual fee: $395

10x miles on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel

5x miles on flights booked through Capital One Travel

Recommended credit score: Excellent

Why this is the best card for premium travel

The Venture X is Capital One’s more premium travel card in the Venture family — and it has a lot to offer more frequent travelers who like the simplicity of earning a flat 2x miles on every purchase.

To help recoup the higher annual fee year after year, you’ll get a $300 annual travel credit, which you can apply to travel you book through Capital One Travel. There’s also a 10,000 annual miles bonus (adding another $100 in annual value), which you’ll earn on your account anniversary. Plus, get up to $100 for TSA Precheck/Global Entry fees, access to Capital One Lounges and partner airport lounge networks, a $100 credit when booking Premier Collection hotels in addition to the $50 credit for Lifestyle Collection hotel bookings (through Capital One Travel), and more.

Annual fee: $0

Welcome offer: Earn 30,000 bonus points when you spend $1,500 within the first 3 months

APR : Introductory 0% APR on new purchases for 12 months; 20.24%, 25.24%, or 29.99% variable APR thereafter

3x points at restaurants (including takeout and delivery)

3x points on travel

3x points at gas stations and electronic vehicle charging stations

3x points on transit (subways, parking, rideshares, and more)

3x points on popular streaming services

3x points on cell phone and landline phone plans

1x points on all other purchases

Why this is the best card for no annual fee

Among the few travel credit cards with no annual fee, a big reason why the Autograph Card from Wells Fargo makes our list is its wide range of rewards categories, with no limit on how many points you can earn. Because they include travel purchases, restaurants, gas, phone plans, and more, it’s easy to maximize your points while traveling and at home.

It also has one of the best welcome offers we found from no annual fee travel cards. If you can meet the $1,500 spending requirement, 30,000 bonus points could get you as much as $300 in redemption value. When you’re ready to redeem, you can choose to book travel through Wells Fargo, redeem for statement credits to your account, pay for new purchases with eligible retailers, and more.

Welcome offer: 75,000 bonus points after spending $4,000 within the first 3 months

APR: 21.49% - 28.49% variable APR

5x points on travel through Chase (except hotel spending that counts toward annual credit)

3x points on dining (including takeout and delivery)

3x points on online grocery purchases (except wholesale clubs, Target, and Walmart)

3x points on select streaming services

2x points on all other travel spending

Why this is the best card for boosted redemptions

Chase Sapphire cards are unique because of the boosted value on travel redemptions. The Chase Sapphire Preferred offers a 25% boost on points you use to book travel through Chase, so each point is worth 1.25 cents each. In other words: 100,000 Chase Sapphire Preferred points may be worth $1,250 in Chase Travel redemptions.

But that’s not all this card has to offer. In addition to great savings on both travel and everyday purchases, you’ll get an annual points bonus worth 10% of your previous year’s purchase total and $50 in annual credits for hotel stays booked through Chase Travel. Chase offers plenty of partner benefits with this card too, with discounts and bonus points from Lyft, DoorDash, Peloton, Instacart, and more.

Annual fee: $550

APR: 22.49% - 29.49% variable APR

10x points on hotels and car rentals through Chase (after the first $300 spent on travel annually)

5x points on travel through Chase (after the first $300 spent on travel annually)

3x points on all other travel (after the first $300 spent on travel annually)

Why this is the best card for flexible travel credits

One of the biggest benefits of a Chase Sapphire Reserve card over the Preferred is the $300 annual travel credit you’ll get each anniversary year. Thanks to Chase’s flexible definition of travel, you can use this credit to cover everything from flights and hotels to taxis, parking, and more.

Other benefits include airport lounge access with Priority Pass Select, credit toward TSA PreCheck or Global Entry fees, and perks when you book hotels with the Luxury Hotel & Resort Collection. You’ll also get credits, waived membership fees, boosted rewards, and more with partner brands like Instacart, DoorDash, Lyft, and Peloton.

And like the Preferred Card, you’ll get boosted redemption value for booking travel through Chase with the Sapphire Reserve. But this card earns an extra 50%, or 1.5 cents per point. For example, if you have 100,000 points in your account, you could redeem them for up to $1,500 in value via Chase Travel.

Annual fee: $250 (see rates and fees )

Welcome offer: 60,000 bonus points after spending $6,000 within the first 6 months

4x points at restaurants worldwide

4x points at U.S. supermarkets (up to $25,000 spent per year, then 1x)

3x points on flights booked directly with airlines or through American Express Travel

1x points on all other purchases (terms apply)

Why this is the best card for everyday spending

With 4x points on both dining at restaurants and food you buy at supermarkets, the Amex Gold card is one of the best options today for earning rewards on everyday spending. But it’s also a lucrative travel credit card. You can earn points on airfare purchases, and your Membership Rewards points are most valuable toward travel redemptions and transfers to Amex’s 21 airline and hotel partners.

On top of rewards, you can save more on everyday purchases with up to $120 in annual Uber Cash ($10 per month) and up to $120 in annual dining credits (also $10 per month, enrollment required). The dining credits can be used at Grubhub, The Cheesecake Factory, Goldbelly, Wine.com, Milk Bar, and select Shake Shack locations.

6x points on eligible JetBlue spending

2x points at restaurants

2x points at eligible grocery stores

Why this is the best card for lower-cost airline rewards

The JetBlue Plus card beat out other airline cards with annual fees under $100 thanks to the added benefits it offers cardholders flying with the airline. We also chose this card thanks to the range that JetBlue flights cover. You may find similar deals from co-branded cards with more limited airlines (such as Hawaiian Airlines or Alaska Airlines), but we find the Plus card from JetBlue offers a solid amount of perks for a wider range of travelers.

In addition to rewards, you’ll get 10% of your points back when you use them to redeem a JetBlue flight, a $100 statement credit (one per year) when you book a JetBlue Vacations package, 5,000 bonus points each year, a free first checked bag, 50% off in-flight, and a faster path to Mosaic elite status with the airline.

Annual fee: $75

Welcome offer: Earn 45,000 bonus points after spending $1,000 within the first 90 days

APR: 20.99%, 25.24% or 29.99% variable APR

6x points on eligible Hotels by Wyndham purchases

6x points on gas

4x points on dining

4x points at grocery stores (excluding Target and Walmart)

Why this is the best card for lower-cost hotel rewards

Among the co-branded hotel cards we compared with annual fees under $100, the Wyndham Rewards Earner Plus offered the greatest combination of rewards and added benefits to help ensure travelers who stay with the brand can maximize value.

According to the issuer, the 45,000-point bonus is worth as much as 6 free nights at participating hotels (though free nights may cost up to 30,000 points). Even after the welcome bonus, you’ll get up to one free night each year with 7,500 annual bonus points. Plus, the card offers a booking discount, automatic platinum-level member benefits, and more.

Wyndham Hotels themselves may be more common than you think, too. The chain has more than 9,000 hotels across 95 countries.

Annual fee: $350 (terms apply; see rates and fees )

Welcome offer: Earn 85,000 miles after spending $4,000 in the first 6 months

APR: 20.99%-29.99% variable APR

3x miles on Delta purchases

3x miles at hotels

2x miles on dining (including takeout and delivery in the U.S.)

2x miles at U.S. supermarkets

1x miles on all other purchases

Why this is the best card for premium airline rewards

For Delta flyers, we think the Platinum SkyMiles card offers the best range of benefits and rewards for the cost. After Delta overhauled its rewards program this year, this card alone no longer grants you access to Sky Lounges, which may be a major loss for some cardholders. But there are still plenty of premium benefits that frequent travelers can enjoy.

Each year, there’s a Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQD) Headstart to help you on your status journey, and each $20 you spend on your card is worth $1 MQD (otherwise, earn $1 MQD per $1 spent on Delta flights). You’ll also get up to $50 off the cost of your flight for every 5,000 miles you redeem when you book on delta.com, an annual companion certificate, first checked bag free, priority boarding, fee credit for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry, and more. On top of all that, we like that the Delta SkyMiles Platinum offers bonus rewards on both travel purchases and everyday spending — so you can rack up miles even when you’re not traveling.

Welcome offer: Earn 180,000 Hilton Honors bonus points after spending $6,000 within the first 6 months (offer ends Jan. 17, 2024)

14x points on Hilton hotels and resorts purchases

7x points on select travel (flights purchased directly with airlines or through American Express travel; rental cars booked directly with select rental car companies)

7x points on dining at U.S. restaurants (including takeout and delivery)

3x points on all other purchases

Why this is the best card for premium hotel rewards

Despite its very steep annual fee, Hilton regulars can get a ton of extra value on their stays with the Hilton Aspire card.

Start with automatic Diamond Status with Hilton, for room upgrades (when available), bonus points, and more — plus up to $400 in resort credits ($200 semi-annually) for eligible purchases you make at Hilton Resorts. With qualifying Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts and Conrad Hotels & Resorts properties, you can get another $100 on-property credit with eligible stays.

There are even plenty of benefits outside of Hilton. You’ll get up to $200 back per year ($50 per quarter) on flight purchases directly with airlines or through American Express Travel, up to $189 back each year for CLEAR Plus membership (with auto-renewal), elite status with National car rental service, access to concierge services, and more (terms apply; see rates and fees ).

All information about the Aspire card has been collected independently by Yahoo Finance. The Aspire card is no longer available through Yahoo Finance.

The above cards may be the best according to our ranking system, but travel credit cards can be incredibly individualized depending on where and how often you travel, your budget, regular spending, and more. Here are a few more that we think can still offer great savings.

Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card

Like the other Venture cards on our list, the Capital One VentureOne carries a lot of potential value. This is the no annual fee version of the card, with a slightly lower 1.25x miles on every purchase (though you’ll maintain the 5x miles on hotels and rental cars through Capital One Travel). You’ll also get 20,000 bonus miles after spending at least $500 within the first 3 months of account opening.

Other benefits are limited, but you can take advantage of a 0% intro APR for 15 months on both new purchases and balance transfers (with a 19.99%-29.99% variable APR thereafter). Recommended credit score: Good to Excellent

The Platinum Card® from American Express

The Amex Platinum may be the most benefit-rich premium travel card you’ll find today. After paying a $695 annual fee (terms apply; see rates and fees ), you’ll get a host of valuable credits and perks each year. These include up to $200 hotel statement credits for qualifying (minimum two-night) stays, up to $200 airline fee statement credits for incidental charges with your selected eligible airline, up to $240 digital entertainment statement credits (enrollment required), up to $155 Walmart+ statement credits (with auto-renewal), up to $200 annual Uber Cash, up to $189 CLEAR Plus statement credit (with auto-renewal), airport lounge access, and much more.

As for ongoing rewards, you can earn 5x points on flights booked directly with airlines or through American Express Travel (up to $500,000 spent per year), 5x points on prepaid hotels booked through American Express Travel, and 1x points on all other purchases. Also. earn 80,000 bonus points after you spend at least $8,000 within the first 6 months of opening. Recommended credit score: Good to Excellent

Can't decide between the Amex Platinum or the Amex Gold?

Bank of America® Premium Rewards® Credit Card

The Premium Rewards travel card from Bank of America has a $95 annual fee and a welcome offer of 60,000 points after spending $4,000 within the first 90 days. Ongoing rewards include 2x points on travel and dining and a flat 1.5x on every other purchase.

With an annual $100 credit toward airline incidental fees and up to $100 every four years toward TSA PreCheck or Global Entry fees, you can also easily make up the annual fee cost. The card also has no foreign transaction fees and you can redeem your points for cash back and statement credits or for travel through the Bank of America Travel Center.

Citi Premier® Card

The $95 Citi Premier Card earns great rewards on everyday spending and travel — and it has a solid welcome bonus. You can get 60,000 bonus points after spending $4,000 within the first 3 months. Then, earn 3x points at restaurants, supermarkets, gas stations, hotels, and on air travel (plus 1x points on all other purchases).

You can earn back the annual fee cost with the card’s $100 hotel savings benefits, which you can apply to a single stay of $500 or more that you book through Citi’s ThankYou portal per calendar year. You’ll earn ThankYou points on your spending, which you can transfer to airline partners or redeem for travel through the portal, gift cards, and more.

When you’re comparing travel credit cards, it can be useful to separate them into two distinct types: general travel rewards cards and co-branded airline and hotel credit cards .

Think about your specific travel preferences to decide which type is best for you:

General travel rewards cards

With a general travel credit card, you’ll earn points or miles on eligible purchases, which you can put toward a number of flexible redemption options. General travel credit cards include cards like the following:

Chase Sapphire Preferred Card

Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card

American Express Gold Card

Many of these travel card issuers have their own travel portals, like Chase Travel or American Express Membership Rewards. You can use these to book flights, hotels, rental cars, and more. They may also have a number of travel partners, to which you can directly transfer points or miles. For example, American Express Membership Rewards points transfer to Delta SkyMiles at a rate of 1:1.

The flexibility of general travel cards means you can travel with any number of different airlines or hotel brands and get the best bang for your buck. Each time you’re ready to book, simply shop around between the portal or partners and compare the best options for your specific travel plans.

These credit cards also allow other redemption options, such as statement credits, gift cards, and cash back. But you’ll generally get the best value by redeeming points or miles for travel.

Airline and hotel credit cards

Airline and hotel credit cards are typically co-branded between the card issuer and the airline or hotel chain. Here are a few examples:

Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card

United Club℠ Infinite Card

Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card

Hilton Honors American Express Card

These cards are best suited for travelers who prefer to fly with a specific airline or stay at a certain hotel chain. Maybe you live near a hub airport, frequent a destination where a specific airline offers the most direct flight options, or you enjoy the perks of a specific hotel’s loyalty program.

Instead of flexible rewards points or miles, you’ll earn points or miles within the airline or hotel rewards program, like Marriott Bonvoy points or American Airlines AAdvantage miles — and get a boosted rewards rate when you spend directly with the airline or hotel. These cards often offer a faster path to elite status tiers within these programs.

The added benefits of co-branded cards are designed to appeal to loyal airline or hotel customers. For example, your airline card may get you priority boarding, upgrades, free checked bags, and in-flight discounts. And your hotel card may offer early check-in or late checkout, annual free night awards, and on-site credits.

Co-branded travel cards aren’t for everyone, but they can add a lot to your travel experience if you have a strong airline or hotel preference.

Here are a few key details to look for in any new travel credit card:

1. Annual fee

No matter your budget, there’s a travel credit card with an annual fee that fits. You can find solid no annual fee options, like the Discover it® Miles general travel card or Hilton Honors American Express co-branded card. But there’s also The Platinum Card from American Express, which may set you back $695 per year (see rates and fees ) but comes with an abundance of valuable benefits and perks that can potentially give you even more value back each year.

The most important thing to keep in mind when deciding whether an annual fee is worth it for you is whether you can get enough out of the rewards and benefits to outweigh the cost — without spending more than you otherwise would or can afford.

2. Sign-up bonus

For new cardholders, a sign-up bonus can offer major first-year value. These bonuses may be worth anything from 10,000 to 100,000 bonus points or miles — which can translate to hundreds of dollars in rewards value.

However, you should compare the terms of the bonus to your own budget before you apply. For example, you may need to spend $4,000 within the first three months of opening your card before you can earn the 60,000 bonus points. If that’s not within your typical spending, be careful not to take on debt to meet the spending threshold. Accruing high interest on balances can quickly outpace even the best bonus.

One smart strategy is opening a new travel credit card when you’re booking a trip you’ve been saving for. You may already be prepared to spend more than usual, which can help you reach the bonus requirement faster. Plus, you can earn rewards on those travel purchases to put toward future trips.

Rewards are one of the biggest reasons for many people to open a travel credit card.

Earning rewards with travel cards often works in one of two ways. You’ll either earn rewards on your everyday spending (groceries, gas stations, restaurants) to redeem toward future travel, or earn rewards on your travel spending to put toward future travel.

Some cards offer a combination of these rewards, but knowing which type of spender you are can be useful. If your monthly budget is largely dedicated to everyday spending, you may get more value from the former. But if you travel frequently and spend a lot of money on flights, hotels, and rental cars, you can quickly rack up more points with travel-based rewards categories.

4. Travel perks and benefits

Many travel rewards credit cards — especially the most premium cards with high annual fees — really shine when it comes to added perks and benefits. These benefits can help you offset the annual fee and save money each time you travel.

Take the $395 annual fee Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card , for example. Each year, you’ll get a $300 annual credit for bookings through Capital One Travel and 10,000 bonus miles (equal to $100 towards travel) on your account anniversary. Already, that’s enough to wipe out the annual cost — before accounting for any rewards and other benefits (like up to $100 in fee credits toward TSA PreCheck or Global Entry and Priority Pass Select airport lounge membership).

Just remember: Choose a card with benefits that help you save on purchases you would still have made otherwise. If you tend to arrive shortly before takeoff and don’t care about airport lounge access, you won’t actually get the $200 potential value from that benefit.

5. Travel protections

One unique aspect of travel credit cards is the protections you can get as a cardholder when you travel. Common protections offered by travel credit cards include trip cancellation and interruption insurance, car rental insurance, trip delay reimbursement, baggage delay insurance, access to emergency assistance services, and more.

As long as you pay for your travel expenses with the card (booking flights, hotels, tours, etc.) you can qualify for these travel protection benefits. Like any coverage, though, you should make sure to read the fine print of what your individual card offers. These benefits can vary greatly between different travel cards, so make sure to look for details in your card agreement.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Should i get a travel credit card.

Travel rewards credit cards can make a great addition to your wallet, even if you only travel a few times per year. Be sure to compare different travel card options to find the combination of annual fee, rewards, benefits, and sign-up bonus that works best for your travel plans and spending.

There may be a few reasons why a travel credit card isn’t right for you, though:

You’re already in credit card debt. Avoid adding another card — especially one with a potentially high annual fee — to your wallet if you already have high-interest debt. Eliminating those balances will help you save a lot more in interest than any value travel rewards could offer.

You don’t want to keep up with a rewards strategy. Travel credit cards can be most lucrative if you maximize how you earn and redeem rewards. If you don’t want to spend the time strategizing bonus categories and the best redemption options, a credit card with a simpler rewards structure may be better for you.

You don’t have great credit. Travel credit cards generally require a good-to-excellent credit score to qualify for approval. If your credit isn’t in a great place right now, focus on improving your score before you apply for a new card.

If you are ready to open a travel credit card, time your application wisely. The spending thresholds to earn your welcome bonus can be high, so you may want to plan your application around your next trip. The money you’ve already saved can help you score the bonus when you book your travel, and you’ll also earn bonus points or miles for your next trip.

Our methodology

To begin our search for the best travel credit cards, we evaluated more than 70 credit cards currently available from major issuers. Each of these cards is marketed as a travel card and earns rewards in the form of points or miles.

Our scoring system involves evaluating each card based on a number of details we believe are important to cardholders looking for travel rewards credit cards. We begin with some general credit card details that we look for across every card type, such as annual fee, APR, welcome offer, card security, issuer transparency, and more. Specifically for travel credit cards, we also looked at factors like rewards, redemption options, welcome offer, and added benefits and perks.

Once each card was given a score, we again evaluated the highest-scoring overall cards for the superlatives included on our list (best no annual fee travel card, best premium travel card, etc.).

We filtered criteria for individual superlatives to find the best card among our already high-scoring options. For example, our pick for the best beginner travel card was chosen for its high score while excluding any co-branded airline or hotel cards and any cards with annual fees over $100. We believe beginner travel card users often look for simple cards that can help them maximize rewards without a high cost or needing to strategize — and we wanted our top options to reflect that.

We used a similar strategy for our co-branded card picks, too. We understand that any airline and hotel credit cards will be highly subjective depending on any users’ preferred travel brands. That being said, the cards that made our list are the highest-scoring cards based on our overall travel card criteria and from wide-reaching travel brands. If an airline, for example, did not have ample coverage throughout the United States, we gave preference to a co-branded card with a broader range of service.

While we strive to keep our rankings objective, we also know that different cards may be better suited for different types of travelers, budgets, spending habits, and more. Before you apply for any new card, make sure you compare multiple options from different issuers to decide the best combination of fees, rewards, benefits, and overall value that works for you.

A Groundbreaking Scientific Discovery Just Gave Humanity the Keys to Interstellar Travel

In a first, this warp drive actually obeys the laws of physics.

If a superluminal—meaning faster than the speed of light—warp drive like Alcubierre’s worked, it would revolutionize humanity’s endeavors across the universe , allowing us, perhaps, to reach Alpha Centauri, our closest star system, in days or weeks even though it’s four light years away.

However, the Alcubierre drive has a glaring problem: the force behind its operation, called “negative energy,” involves exotic particles—hypothetical matter that, as far as we know, doesn’t exist in our universe. Described only in mathematical terms, exotic particles act in unexpected ways, like having negative mass and working in opposition to gravity (in fact, it has “anti-gravity”). For the past 30 years, scientists have been publishing research that chips away at the inherent hurdles to light speed revealed in Alcubierre’s foundational 1994 article published in the peer-reviewed journal Classical and Quantum Gravity .

Now, researchers at the New York City-based think tank Applied Physics believe they’ve found a creative new approach to solving the warp drive’s fundamental roadblock. Along with colleagues from other institutions, the team envisioned a “positive energy” system that doesn’t violate the known laws of physics . It’s a game-changer, say two of the study’s authors: Gianni Martire, CEO of Applied Physics, and Jared Fuchs, Ph.D., a senior scientist there. Their work, also published in Classical and Quantum Gravity in late April, could be the first chapter in the manual for interstellar spaceflight.

POSITIVE ENERGY MAKES all the difference. Imagine you are an astronaut in space, pushing a tennis ball away from you. Instead of moving away, the ball pushes back, to the point that it would “take your hand off” if you applied enough pushing force, Martire tells Popular Mechanics . That’s a sign of negative energy, and, though the Alcubierre drive design requires it, there’s no way to harness it.

Instead, regular old positive energy is more feasible for constructing the “ warp bubble .” As its name suggests, it’s a spherical structure that surrounds and encloses space for a passenger ship using a shell of regular—but incredibly dense—matter. The bubble propels the spaceship using the powerful gravity of the shell, but without causing the passengers to feel any acceleration. “An elevator ride would be more eventful,” Martire says.

That’s because the density of the shell, as well as the pressure it exerts on the interior, is controlled carefully, Fuchs tells Popular Mechanics . Nothing can travel faster than the speed of light, according to the gravity-bound principles of Albert Einstein’s theory of general relativity . So the bubble is designed such that observers within their local spacetime environment—inside the bubble—experience normal movement in time. Simultaneously, the bubble itself compresses the spacetime in front of the ship and expands it behind the ship, ferrying itself and the contained craft incredibly fast. The walls of the bubble generate the necessary momentum, akin to the momentum of balls rolling, Fuchs explains. “It’s the movement of the matter in the walls that actually creates the effect for passengers on the inside.”

Building on its 2021 paper published in Classical and Quantum Gravity —which details the same researchers’ earlier work on physical warp drives—the team was able to model the complexity of the system using its own computational program, Warp Factory. This toolkit for modeling warp drive spacetimes allows researchers to evaluate Einstein’s field equations and compute the energy conditions required for various warp drive geometries. Anyone can download and use it for free . These experiments led to what Fuchs calls a mini model, the first general model of a positive-energy warp drive. Their past work also demonstrated that the amount of energy a warp bubble requires depends on the shape of the bubble; for example, the flatter the bubble in the direction of travel, the less energy it needs.

THIS LATEST ADVANCEMENT suggests fresh possibilities for studying warp travel design, Erik Lentz, Ph.D., tells Popular Mechanics . In his current position as a staff physicist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, Washington, Lentz contributes to research on dark matter detection and quantum information science research. His independent research in warp drive theory also aims to be grounded in conventional physics while reimagining the shape of warped space. The topic needs to overcome many practical hurdles, he says.

Controlling warp bubbles requires a great deal of coordination because they involve enormous amounts of matter and energy to keep the passengers safe and with a similar passage of time as the destination. “We could just as well engineer spacetime where time passes much differently inside [the passenger compartment] than outside. We could miss our appointment at Proxima Centauri if we aren’t careful,” Lentz says. “That is still a risk if we are traveling less than the speed of light.” Communication between people inside the bubble and outside could also become distorted as it passes through the curvature of warped space, he adds.

While Applied Physics’ current solution requires a warp drive that travels below the speed of light, the model still needs to plug in a mass equivalent to about two Jupiters. Otherwise, it will never achieve the gravitational force and momentum high enough to cause a meaningful warp effect. But no one knows what the source of this mass could be—not yet, at least. Some research suggests that if we could somehow harness dark matter , we could use it for light-speed travel, but Fuchs and Martire are doubtful, since it’s currently a big mystery (and an exotic particle).

Despite the many problems scientists still need to solve to build a working warp drive, the Applied Physics team claims its model should eventually get closer to light speed. And even if a feasible model remains below the speed of light, it’s a vast improvement over today’s technology. For example, traveling at even half the speed of light to Alpha Centauri would take nine years. In stark contrast, our fastest spacecraft, Voyager 1—currently traveling at 38,000 miles per hour—would take 75,000 years to reach our closest neighboring star system.

Of course, as you approach the actual speed of light, things get truly weird, according to the principles of Einstein’s special relativity . The mass of an object moving faster and faster would increase infinitely, eventually requiring an infinite amount of energy to maintain its speed.

“That’s the chief limitation and key challenge we have to overcome—how can we have all this matter in our [bubble], but not at such a scale that we can never even put it together?” Martire says. It’s possible the answer lies in condensed matter physics, he adds. This branch of physics deals particularly with the forces between atoms and electrons in matter. It has already proven fundamental to several of our current technologies, such as transistors, solid-state lasers, and magnetic storage media.

The other big issue is that current models allow a stable warp bubble, but only for a constant velocity. Scientists still need to figure out how to design an initial acceleration. On the other end of the journey, how will the ship slow down and stop? “It’s like trying to grasp the automobile for the first time,” Martire says. “We don’t have an engine just yet, but we see the light at the end of the tunnel.” Warp drive technology is at the stage of 1882 car technology, he says: when automobile travel was possible, but it still looked like a hard, hard problem.

The Applied Physics team believes future innovations in warp travel are inevitable. The general positive energy model is a first step. Besides, you don’t need to zoom at light speed to achieve distances that today are just a dream, Martire says. “Humanity is officially, mathematically, on an interstellar track.”
