10 Best Rick Berman Era Star Trek Episodes, Ranked

The old man's season 1 ending, explained, a forgotten crossover brought together two of the best '90s sitcoms.

Podcasts: The final audio frontier. Though Gene Rodenberry created a world centuries far-flung into the future, his utopian universe was not able to predict how popular this audio medium would become even decades later. Nor could he have seen how much  Star Trek would become a pop culture giant, to the point that a slew of podcasts have been produced about the franchise, multiplying like Tribbles. We have scrounged through them all to give you the 9 best  Star Trek podcasts (a number in honor of both Deep Space 9 and the popular Seven of Nine), in alphabetical order, to listen to, ranging from news to analysis to interviews. List, engage!

Daily Star Trek News

It's only fitting we start with a podcast that releases episodes the most frequently. As the title implies, " Daily Star Trek News " records every weekday, catching Trekkies up with the latest news in all things  Star Trek . Host Alison Pitt, previously of the "Priority One" podcast, works tirelessly to bring intel from the Trek frontlines, dishing on everything from casting rumors of new shows to looking back on previous episodes and characters. She has also covered adjacent properties like  The Orville and  Galaxy Quest , and even has a dedicated segment called "Star Trek Stories," where fans can share what this out-of-this-world franchise means to them.

Engage: The Official Star Trek Podcast

Unfortunately, " Engage: The Official Star Trek Podcast " has had its pod jettisoned into space, closing its audio doors in 2018. But the podcast is still a great listen for fans, even if it is through the backlog. Film critic and StarTrek.com columnist Jordan Hoffman was the captain of the ship on its two-year mission, as he brought hour-long installments every week that featured both recaps of  Star Trek: Discovery , as well as interviews. The latter included talks with Trek actors, as well as roundtable discussions on several big-picture themes for the franchise.

The Greatest Generation

If you've spent years searching for the nexus of  Star Trek and dick jokes, look no further than " The Greatest Generation !" The long-running podcast started simple: Hosts Adam Pranica and Benjamin Ahr Harrison are "two guys a little bit embarrassed to have a  Star Trek podcast," reviewing  Star Trek: The Next Generation one episode at a time. But that small runabout concept turned into a starship-sized comedy podcast. Having reviewed  TNG and  Deep Space 9 and now into  Voyager , and building out a repertoire of bits along the way, "The Greatest Generation" proves that our love of  Star Trek can also allow us to poke fun at it once in a while.

Mission Log

Like the podcast just discussed, " Mission Log " has a simple, well, mission. Starting from the pilot episode of  The Original Series , they go one episode and series at a time through the franchise. It's a journey that's taken them currently to the end of  Deep Space Nine , with plenty of deep dives and analysis along the way. The podcast was co-created by Gene Roddenberry's son Rod, and the man himself will occasionally pop in to provide some interviews, as well as access to some of  Star Trek 's most legendary performers, including Armin Shimerman, Walter Koenig and George Takei.

The Ready Room

" The Ready Room " recently celebrated a decade in the captain's chair as one of the most preeminent  Star Trek podcasts. Though the show now puts out episodes on a much more infrequent rate than the others, its concept makes it very unique. Like a spore-driven ship, "The Ready Room" hops through Trek space and time, recapping random episodes of the show across all five series. While the idea may be enough to make your head spin, the conceit succeeds on keeping content fresh. While other recap podcasts can get bogged down in covering some of the slower or lesser quality parts of Trek (looking at you,  Enterprise ...), host C. Bryan Jones and crew are able to skim a little off the top of each series while keeping things lively and exciting.

Star Trek: The Pod Directive

While " Star Trek: The Pod Directive " is the newest kid on the block, it's the only one that can claim the title of the "official"  Star Trek podcast. That's because it's the only show sponsored by "big Trek," sanctioned to discuss the 50+ year legacy of the franchise. Hosted by Trekkies Tawny Newsome -- who plays headstrong Ensign Beckett Mariner in  Star Treks: Lower Decks  -- and  BoJack Horseman 's Paul F. Tompkins, the duo interview various celebrities who are fans of boldly going where no one has gone before. The guests have ran the gamut of disciplines, from actors like Ben Stiller to authors like Reza Aslan and even to politicians like Stacey Abrams.

The Trek Files

Despite what the punny title may suggest, " The Trek Files " is not a look at all of the alien species across  Star Trek . Rather, it's a fascinating deep dive into the history of the franchise, spanning back to the '60s. Every week, "Dr. Trek," aka Larry Nemecek, combs over a document dug up from Trek's past, everything from memos being circulated to story proposals to letters written from the desk of Gene Roddenberry himself. While it's the action on screen that has kept us invested in  Star Trek after all these years, the adventures of the crews behind the shows can sometimes be even more eventful than the escapades of the crews  on the shows. "The Trek Files" is a firsthand display of that, unearthing a time capsule to see how our favorite shows were made.

Unlike the podcasts above, " Trek Geeks " does not focus on episode recaps or interviews (though it certainly contains plenty of both). Instead, hosts Dan Davidson and Bill Smith opt for a more casual discussion of the franchise they love so much. Many episodes are focused around specifics topics, themes and characters, as they get into the macro of  Star Trek more than the micro. It's a great opportunity to take a (war)bird's eye view of the franchise, while also having the freedom to jump around without getting into too much minutiae. And their work has inspired an entire podcast network of Trek-based shows, including "Deep Space Pride," which focuses on LGBTQIA+ issues, and "SyFy Sistas," which highlights Black science fiction.

Women at Warp

For a while, there was a stereotype that Trekkies, and sci-fi fans at large, were wholly nerdy men. " Women at Warp " is here to change your preconceptions in more ways than one. Using a panel of seven rotating hosts, the group explores  Star Trek from a feminist perspective, giving their takes on the franchise from an intersectional lens. The podcast gets into plenty of thematic topics, including the sexualization of women and body inclusivity. And they even take a step out of Trek to discuss real-world issues, including ideal behavior at conventions.

Trekcast: Our interview with Elias Toufixus

Today we've got a big interview for you. We are talking with an actor from some of your favorite video games like Call of Duty, Fortnite and Assassin's Creed to name a few. Currently, he's the main bad guy on Netflix's Blood of Zues. But we Star Trek fans know him better as L'ak from season 5 of Star Trek Discovery. He even gives us a major scoop. Also, he tells us some of the original ideas for L'ak in Star Trek Discovery. Trekcast is a fan-made Star Trek podcast. We talk about all things sci-fi, nerdy/geeky, from Star Trek, Star Wars, Marvel, DC Comics, Stargate, and everything else. If you love dad jokes, saving dogs and bears you'll love Trekcast. I am only 14 so don’t judge, but this show was really funny and I enjoyed it.

It’s not Trekcast

AnonymousReviewerToday

It’s not Trekcast without David and Darren. They might as well have changed the name. This show used to be so good in its heyday. I always looked forward to it. I guess, all good things come to an end eventually. It’s sad, this used to be THE Star Trek podcast. It was so fun to listen to. Part of me hopes that David will get some nostalgia, at some point, for the days of doing this show, for his interest in Star Trek, and make another run at it.

BravesFan134

The good days of Trekcast is gone, they should’ve let it fade away instead of rebooting it with these clowns. Used to listen to The podcast every week with Dave and Darron. I even gave the new guys a chance. Only enjoyment you’ll get out of this podcast is listening to the earlier episodes.

If I could give zero stars I would.

I listen to quite a few podcasts after every new episode, since I do not have any friends who nerd out as much as I do on Trek. I enjoy hearing other talk about the shows. I unsubscribed after the review of “There Is A Tide...” - the barrage of negativity in conjunction with names and scenes being COMPLETELY misquoted was ridiculous! How do you guys run a podcast when you can’t even remember the details of how things went down well enough to back up your bad language and hate?

I like listening to podcasts while I do other tasks, so I thought I would ask what are the best Star Trek podcasts?

Panem et circenses

Panem et circenses

Lieutenant junior grade.

One of my favourites is Mission Log, which explores the morals, meanings, and messages of every episode. Also, everything on Trek.fm is pretty fun. I mostly listen to Earl Grey (TNG), Standard Orbit (TOS), Women at Warp, and Meta-Treks. I don't listen to these much, but some other goods ones are Shuttle Pod from Trekmovie.com, Transporter Room 3 from Ign.com, and Priority One. Trek Geeks is also another good one.

Engage: The Official Star Trek Podcast. It's 'official' because it's produced by CBS through their 'play.it' brand. I've enjoyed it so far.

Vice Admiral

I've really been enjoying the Mission Log podcast, where they go through all of Trek episode by episode. They've reached up to season 5 of TNG, but I'm still in the second season of TOS, since I just started listening a few weeks ago.

Push The Button

I just started Mission Log a few months ago, so far so good, it beats listening to local AM talk radio political garbage when I'm driving.

I typically listen to the trek.fm family of podcasts but there were some things that happened which made me cut back. I still listen to a few though, like The Orb (DS9), To The Journey (Voyager), Melodic Treks, Stage 9, and From There to Here. Im waiting for the TNG show to come back but I don't know when that will be.

IMO Mission Log is by far the best Star Trek podcast. Entertaining, in depth discussions of every episode, and funny hosts who are very responsive and engaged with their listeners.

I should point at first that in no way am I trying to say that our Podcast is one of the best as we're very much trek novices but simply thought this would be one of the best places to post this. My Pals are I have started a new Star Trek Podcast, Spocklight. Our 13-film mission: to explore every film in the ‘Star Trek’ movie franchise from a non-Trekkie perspective. I suppose the idea is kind of 'James Bonding' for Star trek but from the perspective of casual fans. We're a Monthly podcast and the first episode can be found at the link below. We'd love to hear what the Trek community think of the pod. Be warned, we will/do get things wrong but the whole idea is to try and appeal to not only those who are already fans but people who may have never seen a Star Trek film. http://spocklight.podbean.com/e/episode-1-the-motion-picture/

Trek.FM has so many great podcasts. The Ready Room is the most insightful. They rotate through all the series/ movies from episode to episode. Earl Grey is the most fun I think. Warp Five is also very good. There was a complete turnover of hosts on a lot of the shows this past year. I prefer the original hosts on most of them. They have a really nice, easy to navigate website. A year or so ago I was listening to The Pensky File and also Trekabout. These are basically in order episode reviews making their way through all the series. They might be worth checking out, but they were both so cynical/negative and hypercritical I had to stop listening.

Shameless plug: This Week in Trek http://www.thisweekintrek.com We're hitting close to 300 episodes, the show's been running for almost six years. The basic premise of the show is that we pick a random episode and review it, along with news, and a good amount of listener-created content. Both Darrell and I have been around since Trek was on NBC, so we have a long history of watching the show. Hope you like it!

As a big fan of the novels I love the Literary Treks podcast. They review a book an episode and get the authors on when their novels are released. They've even got me interested in reading the comics as they review them as well. If you like the novels then listening to the podcast and the authors really enhances the experience.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned The Trekmate Family Network. Set up five or six years ago, initially as just two friends sat around a microphone recording their podcast Trekmate , it's since blossomed into a network of shows from around the world. Initially they had just Trekmate and their supplemental show Ten Forward , followed by the now defunct Two to Beam Up (long-term Trekkie Marc taking his non-Trekkie wife Kirsty through 1960s Star Trek ). Now they're joined by various other international podcasts such as the Deep Space Nine dedicated show In the Wilderness from Australia, The Delta Quadrant from America and Previously, in the Alpha Quadrant from Scotland and dedicated to Enterprise . www.trekmate.org.uk

When nobody invited Ben and Adam to program a film festival, they decide to go rouge and put one together themselves. But after Ridley Scott’s sci-fi classic almost gave them both a seizure, they’re more prepared to see the franchise’s latest release at the theater. What isn’t practical to bring aboard the Nostromo? Who can sit with both jocks and nerds in the lunchroom? How does Robert Altman’s Alien differ? It’s the episode that gets value for its mucus!

Star Trek Fans Are Petitioning To Get Another Popular Character Their Own Hometown Statue, And There Are 3 Reasons Why I'm On Board With This

Let's all come together to help make this happen.

O'Brien looking shocked at Bashir during a serious conversation.

Star Trek has given fans myriad wonderful characters over the years — we've even ranked them — to the point where fans have crafted permanent real-life tributes to the spacefarers and the values they uphold as members of Starfleet. Considering that's the case, I suppose it was only a matter of time before someone had the idea to honor a cast member of Deep Space Nine , and it's someone known for being the "Most important person in Starfleet."

That's right, efforts are being made to get Colm Meaney's Miles O'Brien his own statue, and I'm 100% on board with this. For those who haven't seen the Change.org petition, the goal is to erect a statue of Miles O'Brien in the character's hometown of Killarney, which is, of course, in Ireland.

As someone currently streaming Star Trek: Deep Space Nine with my Paramount+ subscription , I'm all in on the idea and have a few additional reasons why it'd be grand to see this happen.

A Miles O'Brien Statue Is A Dual Homage To Colm Meaney, And Star Trek: Lower Decks

I should note that while a statue of Miles O'Brien is a great idea, it's not wholly unique as a tribute. Star Trek: Lower Decks first showcased a statue of O'Brien in the Season 1 episode "Temporal Edict." The chief engineer received the honor of being the "Most important person in Starfleet," which series creator Mike McMahan later told StarTrek.com was because he represented the ideal "Lower Decker." He was a crewman who worked his way up the Starfleet ladder all the way to a prestigious teaching position at Starfleet Academy, raising a family in the process.

He's the heart of what makes a good Starfleet Officer, and in all honesty, a damn good person as well. As we prepare for the final season of Lower Decks after it joined the list of shows canceled or ending in 2024 , why not erect this statue in honor of the series that shined on the everyman of Starfleet who strives to their absolute best? We're reportedly already getting a solid conclusion to the series , but this statue would be some real icing on the cake to honor it.

I Absolutely Love The Janeway Statue In Indiana

As both a Star Trek fan and Indiana resident, I couldn't be prouder that there's an actual statue dedicated to Kathryn Janeway in the character's hometown of Bloomington. Whenever I see an online mutual visit to the memorial, my heart beams with pride. It feels silly to say, especially since I've often questioned why Philadelphia has a Rocky statue when there are legitimate boxing legends worthy of celebrating.

What I've ultimately come to realize via Janeway is that it's about the character and what she represents. It also ended up being an attraction of sorts that actress Kate Mulgrew visited, despite concerns from locals she'd create some sort of temporal anomaly in doing so. Wouldn't it be great to see Colm Meaney visit Miles O'Brien's statue, and share some of his thoughts on the character? I certainly think so, especially considering how much he recently advocated that Trekkies are not nuts as some would believe.

Irish Star Trek Fans Deserve A Cool Way To Celebrate The Franchise

Star Trek is a U.S.A. IP that films most of its work in Canada these days, but it's a franchise that is celebrated worldwide. While the show does its best to represent all cultures and humanist values, it's fair to say fans outside of North America don't get quite as much fun seeing the cast at conventions or attending events hosted by Paramount+.

Irish fans need something cool to embrace, and if I'm being honest, the franchise kind of owes them. For all the WTF moments in Star Trek: Voyager , I think the borderline offensive representation of the country via the holodeck city of Fair Haven. We need more of Miles O'Brien when it comes to the Irish in Star Trek , and maybe for a Deep Space Nine follow-up series to be revealed in the next year or so after Alex Kurtzman hinted at something long ago. I won't get greedy, and I'm fine with just seeing this statue erected for now!

I highly encourage supporters to sign the petition, and also watch Star Trek: Deep Space Nine with Paramount+. They can even check out some of his earlier appearances in The Next Generation , which also has a few characters worthy of statues.

Here's Why James McAvoy Turned Down A Role In JJ Abrams' Star Trek Movies

His Dark Materials, James McAvoy

Actor James McAvoy is a confessed Trekkie. On During a video interview with the "Happy. Sad. Confused." podcast , the actor noted that he watched reruns of "Star Trek: The Original Series" when he was a boy, mostly because of its ubiquity. "Star Trek" reruns were common in his area , and McAvoy recalled the colors and outsize qualities made the show feel, to his eyes, like a comic book. It wasn't until he started watching "Star Trek: The Next Generation," however, that his true fandom began. He especially recalled "The Best of Both Worlds," the notable two-part episode in which Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) is transformed into a soulless cyborg.

McAvoy also admitted to loving the "Star Trek" feature films, even though they leaned a little heavily on sentimentality. He noted that the films all possess a nostalgic "We're getting the bad back together" quality that perhaps kept them from being great. The actor even paused to defend the oft-maligned "Star Trek: The Motion Picture," loving its operatic nature.

The podcast host, Josh Horowitz, then idly asked McAvoy why he hasn't appeared on "Star Trek" yet. The franchise covers a dozen TV shows and is churning out new episodes all the time, and McAvoy would likely fit into the world. There was also, one might pause to note, a pop connection between McAvoy and Stewart; both actors played Professor X in the "X-Men" film series. McAvoy admitted, almost dismissively, that he "came close" to being on "Star Trek." He then revealed that he was offered a role in J.J. Abrams' 2009 movie reboot of "Star Trek." Although, rather frustratingly, he wasn't allowed to say which role he would have taken.

McAvoy was 'offered something' in Star Trek

Star Trek 2009 cast

Horowitz asked, straightforward, if he was offered the role of Dr. McCoy, the role that ultimately went to Karl Urban. It's surprising that Horowitz didn't ask McAvoy — who born in Glasgow — if he was offered the role of Scotty, ultimately played by Simon Pegg. Either way, McAvoy was sworn to secrecy. Or, more likely, he signed an NDA. He also made a suggestion that Abrams seemingly followed. In his own words:

"I can't tell you. [...] I got offered something. I didn't want to do that. I suggested I could do something else. They wanted to camera-test me, and I was like 'Do you know what? Yeah, it's alright. Don't worry about it.' Not because I wouldn't, because I just didn't think it was right. [...] What I said to J.J. about what I thought the role should be, and what the of actor that should be [in it], they absolutely got."

McAvoy explicitly does not take credit for Abrams taking his suggestion — it's likely Abrams was already looking at the kind of actor McAvoy was describing — but he did like the performer in question. It's frustrating that McAvoy had to be so vague, but he must abide by Hollywood secrets. McAvoy added that he liked the three films in the Kelvin-verse, including the not-very-good "Star Trek Into Darkness."

McAvoy's new film, "Speak No Evil," a remake of the 2022 Danish film "Gæsterne," is now playing in theaters. He is, as of this writing, not attached to any "Star Trek" projects.
