Which hawaiian island is the best to visit our 2024 ranking.

Though it can be easy to assume the six most visited Hawaiian Islands offer similar experiences, they are more diverse than you can imagine. From Waimea Canyon to Waikiki Beach, Hawaii’s wealth of natural beauty (think: cerulean waters, verdant vegetation and stunning white sand beaches ) is just waiting to be explored. To help you decide which Hawaiian Island is ideal for your next vacation, U.S. News took into account sights, expert opinion and reader input to determine the best Hawaiian Islands to visit. Vote for your favorite island below to have a say in next year's list.

Kaua'i

Hawaii - the big island, honolulu - oahu.

Though it's perhaps most famous for the fabulous coastlines of Ka'anapali Beach and Wailea Beach, Maui is a great option for both couples and families looking for variety in their vacation. Away from the sand, you can drive the Road to Hana, enjoy a bird's-eye view during a helicopter tour , see one of the world's largest dormant volcanoes at Haleakala National Park and get up close to marine wildlife while snorkeling in Honolua Bay or around Molokini. Then, for an experience you won’t forget, relax on the volcanic coastline of Wai'anapanapa State Park, where jet-black sands meet vibrant sapphire waters.

With a more easygoing environment than other islands like Oahu and the Big Island, the Garden Isle lets its wild, natural beauty speak for itself and is perfect for an adventurous getaway. The main attractions here are Koke'e State Park and Waimea Canyon, otherwise known as the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific." But you also won’t want to miss Kaua'i’s breathtaking Wailua Falls or dreamy Po'ipu Beach. And if a challenging hike is what you’re after, it doesn’t get more scenic than the Kalalau Trail along the rugged Napali Coast. Just remember to pack galoshes and a rain jacket – Kaua'i is one of Hawaii's rainiest islands.

The island of Hawaii's bevy of one-of-a-kind attractions and family-friendly activities makes it ideal for travelers who prefer a jam-packed itinerary. Not only does the Big Island offer white and black sand beaches , including the famous Punalu’u Black Sand Beach, it is also home to lush rainforests and two active volcanoes at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. History buffs will love visiting Pu'ukohola Heiau National Historic Site (home to one of Hawaii's largest restored temples) and Kealakekua Bay (where British explorer James Cook first arrived in 1779). Or, head to Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park to see petroglyphs, ancient Hawaiian fishponds and green sea turtles.

The least-developed island on this list, Moloka'i was made for those who don’t mind going off the beaten path. With lush rainforests, miles of beautiful beaches and some of the tallest sea cliffs in the world, Moloka'i is a great place to reconnect with nature, whether you’re staying overnight at one of Moloka'i’s quiet oceanfront cottages – there is only one hotel on the island – or visiting on a day trip from one of the other Hawaiian Islands. Top activities here include soaking up some sun on secluded Papohaku Beach, snorkeling Moloka'i's 28-mile reef or joining a guided cultural hike through Halawa Valley.

Dubbed The Gathering Place, Oahu is home to plenty of famous sites and a great jumping-off point for first-time visitors to the Hawaiian Islands. On the South Shore, you'll find Waikiki Beach, Hanauma Bay, Pearl Harbor National Memorial and Le'ahi (Diamond Head) State Monument, all in or near the capital city of Honolulu. Meanwhile, the North Shore is home to a more laid-back vibe, as well as the renowned waves at Waimea Bay and Sunset Beach, which host major surfing competitions every year. After exploring along the coast, head inland to the tranquil Byodo-In Temple, a replica of a Buddhist temple in Uji, Japan.

best hawaiian island to visit reddit

For a secluded, nature-centric escape, set your sights on Lana'i. Centrally located between Maui and Moloka'i, this remote hideaway makes a great home base for inter-island travel. Travelers can take a four-wheel-drive vehicle to spots like Kaiolohia (Shipwreck Beach) and Kaunolu Village, a prehistoric fishing village that was once frequented by King Kamehameha I, or spend their days sunbathing on Polihua Beach. In winter, head to Hulopo'e Bay for terrific whale-watching opportunities. Then, make your way to Keahiakawelo (Garden of the Gods), an enchanting rock garden that was once part of a native dryland forest, for a breathtaking Lana'i sunset.

These are the best islands in Hawaii, according to frequent visitors

Leslie Harvey

No matter where you go in America's 50th state, Hawaii's islands offer a wide variety of topographies, accommodations, activities and experiences.

Hawaii is an incredibly unique place to visit, and each island has its own distinctive vibe. How do you choose between so many different versions of paradise? Here's a guide to finding the right Hawaiian island to visit on your next vacation.

  • First-time visitors to Hawaii.
  • Single travelers.
  • Large groups.
  • Budget travelers.

Oahu is Hawaii's most bustling and urban island. It's home to the state's largest city and commercial center, Honolulu, which is known for an epic rush hour that sometimes rivals the one in Los Angeles. Within city limits, Waikiki Beach is the place to see and be seen — shop, dine and enjoy the amenities of huge high-rise resorts.

But Oahu's offerings are more diverse than just Honolulu. The growing resort area of Ko Olina is not as built up but still has several upscale accommodations, including Disney's Aulani Resort and the Four Seasons Resort Oahu at Ko Olina . On the way to Ko Olina from Honolulu is Pearl Harbor , one of the most visited historic sites anywhere on the islands.

Oahu's North Shore provides another vibe that's downright chill with its beach-hopping, food-truck-loving, small-town surfer scene. Hikers will find plenty of trails all over Oahu, from the peaks of Diamond Head to less-traveled spots like Makiki Valley and Waimea Valley. Some popular spots do require advance reservations.

Oahu's gateway for travelers, Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) has the most air service of any location on the islands, making it the cheapest destination for travelers from the mainland. It also offers the most nonstop flights.

  • Travelers with kids.
  • Multigenerational travel.
  • Anyone looking for resort-based condo properties.

The second-most-visited island in the state and also its second largest, Maui is home to the famed Road to Hana , Haleakala National Park and the best whale watching anywhere in Hawaii during the winter months.

best hawaiian island to visit reddit

For many travelers, a vacation on Maui is the best of both worlds. The island offers some of the same infrastructure, conveniences and activities of Oahu without the traffic and urban sprawl. It's possible to have an active vacation here and visit a lot of attractions, or you can just enjoy some island rest and relaxation at a resort.

Maui is a great pick for families with kids of school age because of its many activities. It works well for multigenerational groups because it has experiences that grandparents and grandkids can enjoy, such as the Maui Ocean Center or catching a sunrise at Haleakala National Park.

The island of Maui also has many amazing hotels and resorts at a wide variety of price points. Most are clustered in two major areas: on the Lahaina/Ka'anapali/Kapalua corridor on the northwest side of the island and in Kihei/Wailea farther south.

For its size, Maui offers an impressive variety of hotels for travelers to book a hotel stay with points. Most major chains are represented, and many properties offer condo accommodations that work for families or larger groups. The Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa ; The Westin Ka'anapali Ocean Resort Villas; The Westin Nanea Ocean Villas, Ka'anapali; the Grand Wailea, A Waldorf Astoria Resort ; and the Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort have all scored well with TPG contributors and readers.

Hawaii (the Big Island)

  • Romantic couples getaways.
  • Luxury travelers.
  • Adventure seekers.

best hawaiian island to visit reddit

The island of Hawaii, called the Big Island , is the largest and newest island in the chain. Because it's so big, seeing everything requires close to a week, but it offers many different travel experiences from day to day.

The vast majority of Big Island visitors stick to the western side of the island near the city of Kailua-Kona and the Kohala Coast, where the large resorts are located. Luxury seekers can enjoy high-end properties like the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai ; the Mauna Lani , an Auberge Resort; and the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, Autograph Collection.

Families on a moderate budget can find ample hotel offerings, too. In particular, the Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa and the Hilton Waikoloa Village cater to travelers with kids. Pool complexes are a big draw.

Although it's entirely possible to spend a week on the Big Island relaxing on the beach of a resort, the island can also be an adventure traveler's paradise. On the northern part of the island, travelers can zip line, take all-terrain-vehicle tours, jump into waterfalls, scuba dive or snorkel with giant manta rays, or flume down historic sugar cane irrigation channels.

On the southern part of the island, you can visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, although some areas remain closed for safety precautions. The town of Hilo on the eastern side of the island has its own local vibe that can be a great getaway for travelers looking for an authentic Hawaiian experience.

  • Romantic couples getaways and babymoons.
  • Adventure junkies.
  • Relaxation seekers.

Kauai's lush greenery makes it, in my opinion, the most beautiful of all the Hawaiian islands. It is home to waterfalls, hiking trails and a variety of eco-adventures. Most travelers seek out Kauai to avoid the hustle and bustle of Oahu and Maui and have a more unplugged vacation experience.

best hawaiian island to visit reddit

Unfortunately, Kauai's natural beauty also makes it less reliable as a vacation destination. The island's greenery comes from the substantial rainfall it gets, which makes it possible that your vacation in paradise is a damp one. For that reason, it's probably best to plan for a longer trip just in case the weather doesn't cooperate all the time.

Hotel offerings on Kauai are ample. For families, the hands-down winner is the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa in Poipu, known for having one of the best waterslides and pools anywhere on the island. The Grand Club lounge is quite special, too, with easy access to breakfast, drinks, snacks and more.

Poipu to the south is home to quite a few other major resorts, including the Sheraton Kauai Resort . Princeville to the north has many others, such as The Westin Princeville Ocean Resort Villas .

Smaller islands: Lanai and Molokai

  • Returning Hawaii visitors looking for new experiences.

best hawaiian island to visit reddit

Although the vast majority of travelers to Hawaii visit Oahu, Maui, the Big Island and Kauai, there are two smaller islands that tourists can visit as well. Getting to both of them requires a little extra effort, as neither has air service from the mainland.

Lanai, the island owned by Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, is accessible by boat from Maui. It has two Four Seasons resorts on the island (one is adults-only), so it's also luxurious and pricey.

Related: Off the beaten path: Tips on visiting and exploring Lanai, Hawaii

Molokai, by contrast, has no name-brand accommodations, making it a place of refuge for local residents and travelers looking for authentic Hawaii travel experiences. Molokai has commuter air service from HNL and Maui's two airports: Kahului Airport (OGG) and Kapalua Airport (JHM).

Related: Off the beaten path: Tips on visiting and exploring Molokai, Hawaii

I wouldn't recommend that travelers head to either of these places until they've visited several of the larger Hawaiian islands first. You'll likely get more out of them (and know which one is the right fit for you) once you have more context to appreciate them.

Choosing Which Island to Visit

Deciding which is the best Hawaiian Island is an integral step in planning your trip to the Hawaiian Islands. The word best is subjective, of course, as each island has its own unique charm and personality. It’s also worth noting that while many people visit just one island, others choose to do a little Hawaiian Island hopping and see even more.

After you’ve taken the quiz, come back here and get an even better idea of what each island has to offer.

If Oahu garnered the most points on your scorecard then you're probably someone who enjoys the big city, fine accommodations and dining, and the general atmosphere that comes with the hustle and bustle of city life. Honolulu is the 11th largest city in the US and is probably where you'll spend a lot of your time. Oahu has the best selection of both cultural and historical sites in the islands, including good museums.

This island is an excellent place for water sports, and the beaches are sure to please. People just love Oahu, and it lives up to its nickname of the "Gathering Place." Want to learn more about Oahu? Just visit our  Oahu Guide ,  Oahu Accommodations , or  Oahu Tours & Activities  sections.

A lot of folks say Maui no ka oi which means "Maui is the best." Whether or not your scorecard shows this, Maui is a fine location for almost all visitors to the islands. It's the middle ground between the big city on Oahu and the country life of Kauai and the Big Island. A lot of folks choose Maui as their honeymoon destination, and many love the large selection of condos available here.

The Hana Highway is one of the world's premier driving attractions and Haleakala, one of Hawaii's National Parks, is an incredible place to visit. And everyone from golfers to windsurfers will find plenty of adventure on Maui. Maui's nickname is the "Valley Isle," and when you arrive, you'll see why. Haleakala to the east and the West Maui mountains to the west - incredible! Want to learn more about Maui? Just visit our  Maui Guide ,  Maui Accommodations , or  Maui Tours & Activities  sections.

Hawaii's Big Island

If the Big Island topped your list, we don't blame you. It's our favorite, too- and for good reason. The Big Island is by far the most diverse of all the Hawaiian Islands, and it's BIG. In fact, it's the size of all the other islands COMBINED! From barren grasslands to lush jungle, and from lava fields to snow-capped mountains - it's all here. Plus, it's the only island where you can literally walk on land younger than you are!

The Big Island offers a solid selection of world-class resorts on the Kohala (Gold) Coast, condos all around the island, and excellent B&Bs in both Kona and near the Volcano area. The Volcano area is a great place for birdwatching, too. The Big Island also is bustling with activities- from hiking to a recent lava flow or riding horseback in the gorgeous Waipio Valley. Big Island's Southernmost Tip

Big Island's Southernmost Tip

If you like all things green, like seclusion, and love to hike - OK, if you're into nature... welcome home! Kauai offers up pure paradise to anyone who loves the great outdoors. Kauai is the oldest of the major Hawaiian Islands and has certainly earned its nickname of the "Garden Isle." Beautiful flora and fauna abound around the island. As the oldest Hawaiian Island, Kauai is also home to some of the world’s best beaches.

But what really sets Kauai apart is that the bulk of it can't be reached by car. That means grab your hiking pole and hit the trails! Kauai offers what we believe are the best hiking trails in Hawaii; from the beautiful coastal Kalalau trail on the NaPali coast to a hike inland to see Waialeale's "weeping wall," you can't beat the hiking on Kauai. The Garden Isle is also home to Waimea Canyon, which Mark Twain called the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific." Kauai is definitely a more romantic island, as well. The only downside for many is the weather, as all things green means lots of rain. But don't let that worry you- Kauai is an incredible island to visit; our personal second favorite in the chain. Want to learn more about Kauai? Just visit our Kauai Guide , Kauai Accommodations , or Kauai Tours & Activities sections.

19 of the best places to visit in Hawaii

No matter what you're looking for in a vacation – adventure, relaxation, romance, cultural experiences, food – Hawaii has it all.

Every island has its own kind of vibe, from the laid-back serenity of Kauaʻi to the bustling beach towns of Maui. There are so many unique experiences , too, like hiking to an active volcano on Hawaiʻi Island and watching monster surf crash on Oʻahu's North Shore.

With so many options, here's a shortcut to the best experiences you can have in the Aloha State.

1. Waikiki, Oʻahu

Waikiki on Oʻahu's sunny south shore is the state's most famous resort town. Over the years, the neighborhood has evolved to be less kitschy and more authentic. Hotels offer lei-making classes in their open-air lobbies, and traditional hula is showcased on the tiki torch-lit hula mound on Kuhio Beach . Take surfing lessons from modern-day beach boys or indulge in afternoon tea at the historic Moana Surfrider . Some of the island's best restaurants are located in Waikiki, too.

Planning tip : The Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort has been putting on a fireworks show every Friday night since 1988 (bar the pandemic years). Bring a picnic dinner and find a spot on the beach to watch the skies light up. The show starts at 7:45pm during the winter and 8pm in the summer.

2. Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, Hawaiʻi Island

The 323,431-acre Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park on Hawaiʻi Island is a place unlike anywhere else in Hawaii (or the US). This is one of the few places in the world where you can drive up to safely view an active volcano. Kilauea , an active shield volcano, had been, up until 2018, continuously erupting and altering the landscape since 1983. It's currently not active , but that can change any day. The national park – one of five on the Big Island – stretches from sea level to the summit of the 13,679ft Mauna Loa , one of the largest volcanoes in the world. Trek along one of dozens of hiking routes in the park and see old lava flows and tubes, steam vents, and native trees and birds.

Detour : Stop at Volcano Village, a rustic town in the middle of a lush rainforest filled with native hapuʻu fern and 'ōhiʻa trees just outside the park. You can find quaint vacation rentals here, a handful of restaurants, a farmers market on Sundays, a small winery that sells locally produced wine, an orchid farm and the Volcano Art Center , a working arts studio and gallery.

3. The Island of Molokaʻi

Undeveloped and often overlooked, Molokaʻi offers some of the most unique experiences of any of the Hawaiian Islands. Spanning 38 miles long and 10 miles across at its widest point, this island – the fifth largest in Hawaii – is home to the world's tallest sea cliffs, the longest waterfall in the Islands and one of the state's largest white-sand beaches, Papohaku Beach .

There are no big resorts or traffic lights here; instead, you'll find the windswept Moʻomomi Dunes, the 2744-acre Kamakou Preserve with its unique montane bog, and the secluded Kalaupapa Peninsula, once an isolated community of patients with Hansen's disease. Stop at Kanemitsu Bakery in Kaunakakai for freshly made Molokaʻi sweet bread right out of the oven.

4. Hana, Maui

The 53-mile Hana Highway – also known as the Road to Hana – is as scenic as it is winding. The road twists across 59 mostly one-lane bridges, along plunging cliffs, past waterfalls and around 620 turns to the unspoiled town of Hana on Maui's northeast coast. The drive itself – which can take several hours – is part of the journey. Once in Hana, enjoy hala tree-lined Hamoa Beach , sunbathe at Waiʻānapanapa State Park's black-sand beach, or hike to the 400ft Waimoku Falls in the Kīpahulu end of Haleakalā National Park .

Planning tip : If you're planning to visit Waiʻānapanapa State Park,  you'll have to book reservations , which can be made up to 30 days in advance. It costs $5 per person and $10 for parking per non-commercial vehicle.

5. Nāpali Coast, Kauaʻi

The towering green cliffs of the fabled Nāpali Coast rise 2000ft from the ocean and stretch 15 miles along Kauaʻi's rugged northern coastline. You can experience these verdant valleys and razor-edged cliffs aboard a catamaran, on a kayak, from a helicopter or along the 11-mile Kalalau Trail.

Planning tip : To get to Keʻe Beach , the start of the Kalalau Trail, you'll need to make advance reservations to enter Hāʻena State Park. It costs $5 for out-of-state visitors to enter the park, $10 for each car.

Seascape of sunset and beach with silhouettes of surfers and people swimming.

6. North Shore, Oʻahu

In winter – from November to February – some of the world's best surfers (and thousands of spectators) flock to Oʻahu's North Shore and its 7 miles of famous breaks, from Banzai Pipeline to Sunset Beach . Once in a while, the waves are big enough (consistently larger than 40ft, measured from the front of the wave) at Waimea Bay to hold the prestigious, invite-only Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitation. Summer brings calmer ocean conditions, great for swimming and snorkeling. The colorful beach town of Haleʻiwa features cute boutiques, eateries and the famous Matsumoto Shave Ice shop.

Detour : To get a bird's-eye view of this famous coastline, take the 2-mile ʻEhukai Pillbox hike. The trail climbs the side of the northern Koʻolau Mountains to WWII bunkers that offer panoramic views of the entire North Shore coastline.

7. Haleakalā National Park, Maui

Catching the sunrise at the top of Haleakalā, a dormant volcano that rises to 10,023ft above sea level, is one of the most popular activities on Maui. Reservations are required for sunrise – and the fee doesn't include entrance into the national park – and can be hard to get. Consider viewing the sunset instead and staying for the night sky. The park also has numerous hiking trails through otherworldly landscapes and the chance to see the endangered ʻāhinahina (silversword) and nēnē (Hawaiian goose), the state bird.

Planning tip : The park offers pristine dark skies – with minimal light pollution – perfect for stargazing. Temperatures can drop quickly at the summit, so dress warmly and bring layers. You'll also want to bring your own snacks, as there are no food or drinks available in the park.

8. Hanalei, Kauaʻi

On Kauaʻi's quiet north shore is the sleepy town of Hanalei , marked by emerald green mountains, kalo loʻi (flooded taro fields) and some of the island's best beaches, including the breathtaking Hanalei Bay with its historic pier. Browse art galleries and boutiques, eat fresh poke from Hanalei Poke and plant-based taro doughnuts from Holey Grail, and walk around a farmers market.

Detour : About 2 miles west of Hanalei Bay is Lumahaʻi Beach , made famous by the 1958 classic film South Pacific . This is where Mitzi Gaynor spent her time "washing that man right out of her hair."

9. Maunakea, Hawaiʻi Island

Maunakea , or "white mountain," is, at 13,802ft above sea level, the world's tallest mountain when measured from its base. (More than half, or 19,698ft, of Maunakea lies underwater, making it 33,500ft from base to summit.) It's considered one of the most sacred of all Hawaiʻi volcanoes and is known by Native Hawaiians as a region of the gods. It's also a hub of astronomical observation with more than a dozen massive telescopes from around the world. You can book guided stargazing tours with outfitters like Hawaiʻi Forest & Trail .

Detour : In April,  Hilo , which is about 30 minutes west of Maunakea, hosts the annual Merrie Monarch Festival , a competitive hula festival featuring some of the state's best dancers and performers. You have to book tickets in advance to attend the event, but the craft show, which is a huge draw, is open to the public.

A large white building out over the sea

10. Pearl Harbor, Oʻahu

Known for the 1941 attack on the USS Arizona , which launched the US into WWII, Pearl Harbor draws millions of visitors each year to the memorial erected in honor of the 1102 men who are still entombed in the metal hull of the battleship. You can catch a boat to the USS Arizona Memorial , tour the aircraft hangars of the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum , and stand on the decks of the "Mighty Mo" battleship where Imperial Japan formally surrendered in 1945. Pearl Harbor was once known as Wai Momi, or pearl waters, because of its abundant oyster beds.

11. Upcountry Maui, Maui

On the slopes of Haleakalā are the quaint towns of Kula and Makawao, collectively known as Upcountry Maui. Up here, the air is crispier, and the vibe is slower. Pick fresh strawberries in season at Kula Country Farms , wander around the fragrant Aliʻi Kula Lavender Farm , or feed goats at Surfing Goat Dairy. This area is famous for its paniolo , or Hawaiian cowboys.

Detour : Not many visitors know that grapes are grown here. Open since 1974, MauiWine produces wines made from estate-grown grapes, pineapples and raspberries. Visit its tasting room at the picturesque ʻUlupalakua Ranch.

A canyon with sheer brown-red rock walls

12. Waimea Canyon, Kauaʻi

Called the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific," Waimea Canyon, with its buttes, crags and earthen colors, stretches 10 miles long, is 1 mile wide and is more than 3600ft deep. Stop at the Waimea Canyon Lookout for sweeping views of the canyon and the 800ft Waipoʻo Falls . But you can also experience the canyon via numerous hiking trails, on horseback and from a helicopter. Any way you see it, it's breathtaking.

Detour : The best trails are located within the 4345-acre Kōkeʻe State Park . The cost is $5 per person (nonresident) and $10 per car. From the park, you can stop at the Kalalau Lookout at 4120ft above the Nāpali Coast, with commanding views of the lush, amphitheater-headed Kalalau Valley. Camping is available, and the restaurant is worth a stop (but note: it only serves breakfast and lunch.)

13. South Kona, Hawaiʻi Island

Head south from Kailua-Kona, and you'll be in coffee country. This area – Kaʻawaloa (Captain Cook), Hōnaunau, Kāʻu – is known for its high-quality coffee grown exclusively in this high elevation and volcanic soils on the slopes of Hualālai Volcano. There are hundreds of farms here, and many offer guided tours and free tastings. Hōlualoa is a small artsy town with cute shops. Kealakekua Bay in the region of Captain Cook provides some of the island's best snorkeling. And Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park is a sacred place of refuge that you wander on a half-mile walking tour.

Detour : In Keauhou, you can dive at night with the gentle manta rays that swim along this coastline. Seeing these graceful giants glide and twirl in the water with you is an experience you won't likely forget.

14. ʻIolani Palace, Oʻahu

Built in 1882 under King David Kalākaua, ʻIolani Palace in Downtown Honolulu is the only royal residence in the US. It took three years to complete at a cost of $343,595, with Hawaiʻi's first electric light system, flush toilets and intra-house telephones. The last two monarchs of the Hawaiian Kingdom – King Kalākaua and his sister and successor, Queen Liliʻuokalani – resided here until the overthrow of the kingdom in 1893. You can tour this American Florentine-style palace and see its throne rooms, dining rooms and the private living quarters of the royal family.

Detour : Walk to nearby Chinatown and browse the markets or eat at one of the many restaurants – ranging from Korean takeout to poke bowls to restaurants run by James Beard Award-winners and nominees – in this neighborhood.

15. Molokini, Maui

Three miles off shore from Wailea on Maui is Molokini Crater, known for its deep, crystal-clear waters teeming with marine life. This crescent-shaped islet is a marine preserve, home to more than 250 species of tropical fish. The only way to get to this popular snorkeling and diving site is by boat.

Planning tip : While the boat ride out to Molokini is typically smooth, the journey back can be tumultuous. If you're prone to seasickness, either sit in the center of the boat where it's more stable or take some motion-sickness remedies.

16. Kailua, Oʻahu

A quick 15-minute drive from Honolulu, Kailua seems like a world away. The beach town is built around Kailua Beach , a powdery-white stretch of sand that runs 2.5 miles long. People fish, surf, kayak, swim and paddle canoes in these waters. Nearby Lanikai Beach , with its unobstructed views of the Mokulua Islands, is another popular stop for beach lovers. It's smaller and more secluded than Kailua Beach, but often more crowded because of its reputation for calm waters and gorgeous vistas. The town itself boasts popular restaurants, boutiques, local breweries and a great locally-owned independent bookshop called Bookends.

Planning tip : Consider exploring Kailua town by bike. You can rent one from The Bike Shop . (There's no city-run bike-sharing on this side of the island.) The shop has a range of cruisers, mountain bikes and road bikes for rent, complete with helmets and bike locks. Electra cruises – the most popular bikes – start at $18 for up to four hours. You can book online and pick it up at the shop.

17. Old Lahaina Lūʻau, Maui

Open in 1986, the locally owned Old Lahaina Lūʻau on Maui has been a favorite lūʻau for decades, showcasing traditional hula , music and food. It's located right on the ocean off Front Street in Lahaina with great sunset views. Tickets include live entertainment, an open bar, historical storytelling and chanting, and an all-you-can-eat buffet with Hawaiian staples like lau lau, kālua pig, poi and poke .

A green sea turtle swimming at a reef in Lanai, Hawaii

18. Hanauma Bay, Oʻahu

This protected nature preserve in East Honolulu is one of the best spots to snorkel on Oʻahu . About 400 species of fish inhabit this bay, along with honu (Hawaiian green sea turtles) and the occasional endangered Hawaiian monk seal. There are restrictions for access to this popular bay: online reservations are required , and it costs $25 per person for non-Hawaii residents 13 years and older. Parking is another US$3 per car. The bay is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Planning tip : You can rent snorkel gear at the bay, so you don't have to lug your own. While you can walk down the steep road to the beach, you can also opt to take the free tram (we recommend that on the way back to your car).

Least known of all the Hawaiian Islands – and the smallest inhabited island – Lanaʻi is an ideal escape. Stay in luxurious resorts with world-class amenities fronting the beautiful and secluded Hulopoʻe Beach , a designated marine preserve filled with colorful fish and sometimes spinner dolphins. Or explore the rest of the island – the wild and windswept 8-mile Shipwreck Beach (complete with an actual shipwreck), the ancient fishing village of Kaunolū , or visit the strange landscape of Keahikawelo (Garden of the Gods).

Planning tip : If you want to venture outside the resorts of Lanaʻi City, you'll need to rent a four-wheel drive vehicle. There's no public transportation or ride-sharing on the island.

In addition to 137 islands, islets, and atolls, the archipelago of Hawaii is also home to eight major islands, six of which are open to tourists. Although it’s hard to go wrong on a trip to Hawaii, each island is so unique, it’s best to do your homework ahead of time. To help you out, we’ve taken into account the cost of accommodations, variety of attractions, crowd levels, and general island vibes, to rank every Hawaiian island open to tourists.

Sixth on our list is Molokai, the least visited and least developed of the Hawaiian Islands. A reminder of what Hawaii used to look like before mass tourism, Molokai is undeniably beautiful. However, as a distinctly local island, Molokai doesn’t offer much to tourists compared to the rest of the state. The island is rugged and rural — island maps reveal little information and Molokai is completely devoid of traffic lights. Still, the island is a great option for those who really want to get off the beaten path and discover some rugged adventures. Canoeing, fishing, whale watching, and even golf courses are all available on the island. Located on the island’s east shore, Halawa Beach is a popular day trip, consisting of two bays ideal for swimming, picnicking, and surfing. Visitors who want to make the trek to the outer island should book accommodations at Hotel Molokai which offers access to the island’s main attractions.

As the smallest inhabited Hawaiian Island, Lanai is also the only island that is privately owned. Billionaire Larry Ellison bought 98% of the island in 2012 with the intention of turning Lanai into a high-end wellness destination. Nearly 10 years later, Lanai is well on its way to being the tranquil tourist community envisioned by Ellison, with several five-star resorts and two golf courses. Away from the high-end accommodations, Lanai still provides plenty of adventure — if you’re going to make the drive to Hulopoe Bay to watch the spinner dolphins, an off-road vehicle is recommended for island travel. It’s also helpful to know that Lanai is drier and slightly cooler than the other islands, with high temps hovering in the mid-70s year-round. Although lack of rain may be an advantage, the cost of staying on the island makes it less attainable for the average traveler.

In contrast to the serenity found on Molokai and Lanai, Oahu is a bustling island frequented by visitors year-round. Home to Honolulu, Hawaii’s capital and biggest city, Oahu is the island to visit if you don’t mind larger crowds. On the plus side, it’s the most affordable island for travelers, making it more accessible to tourists on a budget. Many visitors flock to Waikiki , a neighborhood in Honolulu that provides plenty of accommodations and smaller waves for beginner surfers. In contrast, the island’s North Shore is notorious for its big surf, making it a premier destination for the pros. In between these two coastlines, Oahu provides endless activities for travelers, including horseback riding, zip-lining through the jungle, and day hikes on Diamond Head. Since it’s also home to historic sites (like the Pearl Harbor National Memorial ), and cultural activities (like luaus at the Polynesian Cultural Center ), Oahu is sure to please a wide variety of travelers.

While its official name is Hawaii, this island is better known as “the Big Island.” The nickname is truly appropriate — as both the largest and youngest of the Hawaiian Islands, the Big Island offers visitors a glimpse into the vast biodiversity of the Hawaiian ecosystem. Home to Mauna Kea, an active volcano and the tallest mountain on Earth from base to summit, Hawaii is a dream vacation for the outdoorsy set. Between stargazing atop an active volcano , camping on black sand beaches, hiking through the rainforest , and snorkeling the coral shelf at Captain Cook , the Big Island is ideal for active travelers. On the flip side, if your idea of a Hawaiian vacation involves sipping Mai Tais in a lounge chair, this particular island might not be for you.

With its endless white-sand beaches and swaths of thick, jungle forest, Maui is easily one of the most recognizable — and popular — of the Hawaiian Islands. For many travelers, Maui is ranked at the top of the list, a must-see destination that offers a combination of amazing restaurants, fun shops, and some of the most beautiful scenery on Earth. In addition to the stunning beaches that make Maui beloved by many, the island supplies a wide array of thrilling activities, like surviving the hairpin turns on the Road to Hana, watching pods of humpback whales, and observing sharks at the Maui Ocean Center . However, all of these advantages translate into a few drawbacks — the coveted island is more expensive to visit and it’s often crowded during the busy season.

From the minute your plane lands on Kauai , you’ll begin to understand why this Hawaiian Island surpasses all others. But Kauai’s “it factor” goes beyond the island’s tropical scenery and magnificent shoreline, and has much to do with its laid-back vibe. While the island’s location makes it slightly wetter than the rest of Hawaii, Kauai provides a consistent mix of sun and rain that frequently results in dramatic rainbows off the coastline. The precipitation also adds to the island’s greenery, providing a lush backdrop for some of the best hiking trails in Hawaii. Although Kauai maintains a delightful and somewhat quirky local vibe, it’s still home to a few big-name resorts, if that’s the type of vacation you’re looking for. Either way, the island’s beauty and pace of life will make you forget your troubles, which is the stuff that great vacations are made of. Main photo by Shane Myers Photography /Shutterstock.

What To Expect On Each Of The Hawaiian Islands

best hawaiian island to visit reddit

The state of Hawaii recognizes 137 different islands that are part of their state.  The majority of these “islands” are islets (a new word to me that evidently means really small island), big rocks, or coral reefs that disappear with the changing tides.  In terms of realistic visiting options, there are 8 main islands that are actually big enough to explore.

The traditional Hawaiian alphabet only has 13 letters. This means that Hawaiian words almost always contain  H’s, K’s, M’s, P’s, and L’s, and often look the same.  To differentiate, the words just seem to get longer.  The longest Hawaiian word I’ve encountered is Humuhumunukunukuapua’a, which is the name of the state fish (good luck pronouncing that one).

Many of islands and cities on those islands can get confusing if you aren’t careful.  Think you have nothing to worry about? Consider the fact that Hanalei, Haena, Halaula,Honalo, Hanamaulu, Hauula, Heeia, and Halawa are all names of different cities within the islands.  Furthering the confusion, we call the entire group of islands Hawaii, but the biggest Hawaiian island is actually named Hawaii as well.

To help simplify trip planning, I give a brief overview of what you can expect on each of the 8 main islands. Almost all international and mainland USA flights go into Honolulu (Oahu), but there are a few options into Kahului (Maui) and Kona (Hawaii) directly as well.

To transfer between islands, almost everyone flies as ferry options are extremely limited. Just because something is listed for one island, doesn’t mean that you can’t find it on one of the others. I’m sure you don’t find it shocking that each of the islands feature beautiful beaches.

Which island do you most want to visit?

Oahu, Hawaii (Most popular island)

best hawaiian island to visit reddit

This is the most visited and populous island in Hawaii. It features the capitol city of Honolulu and a lot of the most common tourist spots like Waikiki beach, the North Shore, the bamboo forest and Pearl Harbor.  To find out more see my post, 11 Places you can’t miss in Oahu .

We stayed in the  Courtyard by Marriott Waikiki Beach   Hotel .  We ended up loving our hotel! The location was right by the beach and price was perfect!  You can book and check out current prices  here .

Waimea Canyon State Park, Kauai. 27 Best Places to Visit in Hawaii!

This island is known as the “Garden Isle” for its lush vegetation and beautiful hikes that take you to hidden waterfalls.  Dramatic cliffs on the Na Pali Coast are a must see!  City ordinances prohibit construction of any building higher than a coconut tree, so views are never obstructed.  Also, for some reason there are thousands of wild chickens roaming around the island.

Molaka’i Hawaii

Molokai Island in Hawaii!

Supposedly this is the “purest” and least developed all the Hawaiian islands.  If you come to this island, you will not find Starbucks and fancy resorts, but you can expect to experience the classic slower paced island style.

In general I think animosity from towards visitors from locals is overstated (unless you are competing for waves), but on Molaka’i it is supposed to be non-existent.

Maui , Hawaii

best hawaiian island to visit reddit

This island is often said to have the most beautiful beaches in the world.  In my experience, Maui is dominated by beautiful beaches, high end resorts, and golf courses.

Hawaii (The Big Island)

Waipio Valley Black Sand Beach

This is the biggest of all the Hawaiian islands, though it is not densely populated. It features beautiful resorts in Hilo and Kona, but also tons of natural beauty. Aside from the expected pristine beaches, the Big Island is a perfect spot to go horseback riding through the rainforest, take a helicopter ride over active volcanoes, or lounge on a black sand beach.

Where to stay on the Big Island – Royal Kona Resort (the exact hotel we booked) – Honestly, we did not have high expectations for this hotel as we ended up having to book it last minute. We were pleasantly surprised by how nice it was. Yes, the actual property was a little bit older, but was meticulously maintained and positioned in an awesome area.

It was NOT on a beach, but it was right on the water and rocky shore that was beautiful to walk along and watch the sunset. Our hotel even had its own lagoon you could swim in. Super easy access from the airport. Book the Royal Kona Resort here on Booking.com

The Ultimate Guide to all of the Hawaiian Islands! Lana’i – Previously, almost all of this comma shaped island was used as a pineapple plantation. With pineapple production being phased out, the island is developing as a touristy resort spot. Currently, it is a great place to rent 4WDs to explore the sites by driving over dirt roads and trails. Love this! I’ve actually always wondered about the Hawaiian islands! Great post!

Thank you so much! I was definitely scratching my own itch with this post. haha.

Molokai and Maui are two that I definitely want to visit. I’ve been to Oahu and Kauai and LOVED Kauai’s outdoor scenery and nature. Each island definitely has it’s own personality and unique characteristics.

Molokai and Maui are at the top of our list as well. We are planning on visiting Kauai, Maui, and the big island this winter and we are so excited. Hawaii is just too gorgeous to limit yourself to only one island.

Wow, Great pictures which give you the desire to jump onto a plane. I have been dreaming on going to Hawaii for the last few years and my dreams are coming true. Next year we are going to big island for a wedding and I am sure to enjoy my time there and also try to island hop.

That is so exciting!! It is pretty easy to island hop once you are there so hopefully that will work out. You will love it!

We actually asked some locals about the free roaming chickens on Kauai. They said that during Hurricane Iniki in 1992, several farms were destroyed and many of the chickens were able to get free. They then bred with the native Hawaiian chicken, which is sacred, so in turn, they all became sacred, so no one is allowed to kill them. I’ve read lots of theories online, but that’s what we were told by a few different locals on our trip in 2015.

Wow, that is really interesting. Thanks for that insightful comment!

Nice place. The view is fantastic.

It really is! The view is amazing!

Wow Amazing!

Wow that was unusual. I just wrote an really long comment but after I clicked submit myy comment didn’t appear. Grrrr… well I’m not writing all that over again.Anyhow, just wanted too say excellent blog!

Haha, sorry! I hate it when that happens. And thank you so much for reading!

Wow, I’ve always wanted to visit Hawaii, but now I want to even more! Thank you for sharing more information on each of the islands. It will be helpful when I plan a trip someday! ;)

I am so glad to hear it was helpful! I remember when I first visited Hawaii being so confused wondering which island to visit. Thank you for reading Marie!

I hear that Kauai lacks mongooses, which are found on the other main islands. Mongooses eat eggs, hence the huge chicken population. Don’t know if it’s true, it’s what one of the locals told me when I was visiting there.

Thanks in favor of sharing such a good thought, post is nice, thats why i have read it completely

Amazing Blog and beautiful pictures of Hawai’i.

Thank you for the brief descriptions of the islands! I’ve been to Oahu and Kauai (you can fly directly into Lihue, Kauai), and love Kauai for it’s beautiful scenery. I can’t wait to visit other islands!

We have only been to Maui. Loved it. Stayed north of Lahaina. We have wanted to branch out to see other islands, but loved it so much, we are planning our third one.

Which Hawaiian island to visit? Check your must-haves

Big island at a glance, maui at a glance, kauai at a glance, oahu at a glance, if it's your first trip to hawaii.

First-timers to Hawaii struggle to pick the perfect island. With over 4,000 square miles, Big Island (also known as Hawaii Island) has a lot to offer travelers who don't mind a lot of driving. Snow-capped mountains (yes, snow in Hawaii), stunning beaches, lava fields that make you feel like you're on the moon's surface — they're all here.

Big Island highlights

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park has more than 520 square miles of volcanic landscapes to explore, including lava tubes, steam vents, petroglyphs, rainforest trails and, if Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of volcanoes and fire, cooperates, flowing lava.

Has the only green- and black-sand beaches in Hawaii.

Offers night snorkeling with manta rays.

Mauna Kea's observatory is a must-visit for stargazers.

Light pollution is kept to a minimum on the Big Island, which helps the astronomers on Mauna Kea and makes for a surreal nighttime experience when driving around.

Big Island drawbacks

It requires a lot of driving to see it all.

Resorts on the beach can be pricey.

During dry seasons, the Kona Coast area can seem parched and arid.

Big Island tips

Fly into Kona International Airport to land on the sunny, beachy side of the island. Fly into rainy Hilo International Airport if you want to make a beeline for Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

You will certainly want to rent a car here since the island's best offerings are spread out.

The Kona Inn Shopping Village is fun for dining and strolling, but it's not the best area to stay because it's touristy and lacks a good beach.

Where to earn or redeem points on the Big Island

For Marriott Bonvoy members , the Westin Hapuna Beach Resort is located on Hapuna Beach, which is regularly considered one of the nicest beaches in the world. Based on a recent search, the property has rooms starting at 71,000 points per night.

IHG Rewards members can stay at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Kailua-Kona at 40,000 points per night.

Maui is the second largest island in Hawaii and offers many beaches, hiking trails, historical sites and scenic views. It has a mix of resort towns where you can hang out at the beach, and undeveloped areas with rainforests and coastal dunes to explore. If you’re interested in biology and conservation, learn about the many plants and animals that are unique to Maui.

Maui highlights

Haleakala, a dormant volcano, offers a once-in-a-lifetime sunrise experience, plus great hikes and cycling.

The Road to Hana can be a slow drive through a tropical paradise.

Excellent whale-watching November through February — often without leaving dry land.

Black Rock in the Kaanapali area, between the Sheraton Maui and the Royal Lahaina Resort, has accessible snorkeling right off the beach.

Maui drawbacks

Resort areas can feel like one big, manicured golf course.

Activities are fewer and farther between.

Beach resorts can be pricey, especially in Wailea.

Maui's two main resort areas, Kaanapali and Wailea, offer some of the best accommodations for visitors who want a relaxing resort vacation on the beach with all the conveniences and amenities.

Road conditions on the Hana Highway can be tricky — or even treacherous. Consider taking a tour or renting a vehicle that can handle challenging terrain.

Rental car insurance may not cover you on some roads around Hana. Learn your rental car company's terms and credit card insurance coverage before you head out.

Mama's Fish House , a favorite destination for Maui-bound foodies, can book up three to six months in advance.

Old Lahaina has a wealth of museums and historical sites for history buffs, offering a glimpse into Maui's fascinating past.

Where to earn or redeem points on Maui

World of Hyatt members can stay at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa , which is located at Ka’anapali Beach. The hotel has a half-acre pool, an on-site luau, oceanside golf course and more. The property is a Hyatt Category 7 hotel and award nights start at 25,000 points per night.

Travelers rich in Hilton Honors points can find rooms at the luxurious Grand Wailea, A Waldorf Astoria Resort starting around 110,000 points per night for a standard room reward. Based on a scan of the hotel’s calendar, it seems as though the property requires a minimum booking of at least two nights.

Backpacker on the Kalalau Trail on Kauai's Napali Coast. (Getty Images)

Home to just about 74,000 residents — a tiny number compared to Oahu's population of nearly 1 million — Kauai is the place for travelers looking to spend less time around humans and more around spinner dolphins, sunbathing monk seals, sea turtles, free-roaming chickens and abundant natural beauty.

Kauai highlights

Home to the breathtaking Napali Coast, which can be explored by catamaran, kayak, helicopter or hiking the 11-mile trail Kalalau Trail.

Queen's Bath, near Princeville on the island's northern side, is a stunning natural tide pool you can explore or swim in when the ocean waters are calm.

Explore Waimea Canyon, the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific," on a hike or with easy stops along a driving tour.

Kauai drawbacks

Sandy beaches, convenient for visitors, are fewer and smaller than on other islands.

Bugs and big spiders may make for unwelcome guests in hotel rooms and condos.

A limited number of restaurants in resort areas.

In the winter, ocean waters turn treacherous on the island's north side. Stick with safer southern swimming spots like Poipu Beach in these colder months.

Read up on the safety of Kauai helicopter tours, as there have been several fatal crashes.

Apply early for a permit to hike the Kalalau Trail, as they sometimes sell out.

Where to earn or redeem points on Kauai

The Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa , which is located on Poipu Beach, is an eco-friendly property with a golf course and spa. This is a Category 7 hotel and rooms start at 25,000 points per night at the off-peak rate.

Hilton loyalists will find rooms at the Hilton Garden Inn Kauai Wailua Bay starting at 60,000 Honors points per night for a standard room reward.

Pearl Harbor National Memorial has four attractions, but the must-see is the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial.

An easy stop off Kamehameha Highway on the North Shore, Laniakea Beach, better known as Turtle Beach, attracts grazing sea turtles you can see right from the sand.

Byodo-In Temple offers a serene escape in a mountainous rainforest setting.

Reservations for world-famous snorkeling spot Hanauma Bay open up two days in advance and can get snapped up in minutes. Visit the Hanauma Bay booking site at 7 a.m. on the nose two days before you plan to visit to grab your spot.

Waikiki is the only place in Hawaii where you don't really need a rental car , but get one for at least a day so you can explore some of the beautiful, unspoiled parts of Oahu.

An umbrella and beach lounger set can cost up to $85 but may be worthwhile since it gives you a shady Waikiki home base for a whole day.

Aspiring surfers can get lessons on the gentle waves just steps from any Waikiki hotel.

Oahu drawbacks

Waikiki is very crowded and dense.

There's lots of traffic around the island, especially during rush hour. Hotel rooms on lower floors can get a lot of street noise.

Parking and resort fees combined can eat up $100 per day of your travel budget. You can save money by explicitly booking Oahu hotels without resort fees .

Where to earn and redeem points on Oahu

Wyndham Rewards members can stay just steps from the beach at the Ramada Plaza by Wyndham Waikiki , starting at 30,000 points per night.

The Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort and Spa , right across the street from the beach, has rooms starting at 20,000 World of Hyatt points per night.

Chances are, the Big Island of Hawaii has everything you're looking for. But depending on what you want to do, one of the other islands accessible from the mainland — Maui, Oahu or Kauai — could be a better fit.

Now that you know where to go in Hawaii for your first trip, take this final tip to heart:

Pick just one island for visits of eight days or less. Otherwise, you'll spend too much of your precious vacation time in long lines at airports, hotel check-in desks and car rental agencies.

Hawaii’s hiking is the best. You will find yourself standing on top of a volcano looking over the Pacific thinking how lucky you are. With six major islands and all offering unique hiking, what Hawaiian island has the best hiking trails?

The best Hawaiian island for hiking is Oahu. Oahu’s hiking trails cover the two volcanic mountain ranges that flank the island. Oahu’s abundant network of trails gives opportunities for beginner to advanced hikers. One can enjoy waterfall hikes, WWII pillbox hikes, or coastal ridges on Oahu.

During my two years of living on Oahu and our frequent trips back now that we are on Maui, I’ve hiked all the best trails on Oahu and then some. After hiking Kauai, Hawai’i, Maui, and Lanai I can say with confidence that Oahu offers the best hiking trails in Hawaii.

The other islands aren’t bad so I give some tips and trails on them too.

Olomana 3 Ridges Hike Oahu

The Best Hawaiian Island for Hiking is Oahu

Oahu is the most populated Hawaiian island. With a population of 953,207 residents, it dwarfs the next most populated island if the Big Island with 186,738 people.

But you would never know it on an Oahu trail. Hiking on Oahu gets you away from the traffic jams, crowded beaches, and Waikiki with its 72,000 visitors a day.

Oahu is the best island for hiking due to the sheer volume of trails available. Don’t worry, Oahu also has quality over quantity. After hiking on all the islands, Oahu has provided the best jungle strolls, jaw-dropping views, and hair-raising ridge-line hikes compared to any other Hawaiian island.

The best hikes on Oahu tend to be 3 miles or less and 1 to 3 hours long. One can don a comfortable pair of walking shoes and a backpack with snacks and water to get some epic hiking done on their vacation.

Kauai is a close second to Oahu but that is mainly because of Kauai’s Na Pali Coast trail. The trail is one of the best in the world but at 22-miles long, with cliff-edge shuffles, and elevation changes it is only for advanced hikers. The amount of rain on Kauai is another reason why it does not top the list.

Na Pali Coast Kauai Hike

The best Hawaiian island for hiking has to have a little bit for everyone.

Luckily for Oahu, making everyone happy doesn’t dilute the awe factor of Oahu’s hikes.

Oahu Stairway to Heaven Hike (Ha’iku Stairs)

I’d be remiss not to mention the most epic hike on Oahu. The Ha’iku Stairs or more popularly known as the Stairway to Heaven. This hike is very much illegal and the County of Honolulu is planning to demolish the stairs.

It has always been on private property (the government) and dangerous with its dilapidated stairs. But it used to have less security.

Oahu Stairway to Heaven Hike

I hiked it in 2011 with friends. Even then it was illegal but the authorities would only give a slap on the wrist if that. We started hiking before day-break and before the security guard would come on shift. On the day we were hiking it the construction crew was building a bigger, more fortified fence around the start of the stairs.

The security guard just made friendly banter with us after we had come down the stairs. Now I’ve been told the security guards are mean and they will call the police. Being on the stairs is a $1000 fine and requires one to appear in court.

You can view the stairs briefly when driving down the H-3 after you come through the mountain tunnel. You can hike the stairs in a round-about way. Check-out the Moanalua Valley Trail to the Ha’iku Stairs for directions and tips.

Even without hiking the Stairway to Heaven, Oahu is still the best Hawaiian island for hiking.

10 Reasons Why the Best Hawaiian Island for Hiking is Oahu

Here are my 10 reasons why Oahu is the best Hawaiian Island for hiking. Hands down.

Then read on for my eleven favorite Oahu hikes, listed in order of easiest to hardest.

1. Quantity of Hikes

Oahu has over 50 popular trails and many more hard-to-find trails. This is more than any other Hawaiian island.

The island of Hawaii has 300-miles of hiking trails but not the number of unique trails that Oahu has.

Oahu was formed from two massive shield volcanoes. These two volcanoes have eroded over the millennia to be two mountain ranges going down either side of the mountain. From these mountains, hiking trails abound.

The craters, cinder cones, and other volcanic features of Oahu make for unique hiking trails.

2. Quality of Hikes

I never got bored hiking on Oahu. I had a well-worn Oahu hiking book when I lived on Oahu. I never found a trail that disappointed me.

I could start a hike on the leeward side of the island in desert conditions at sea level and then climb the mountain into a rainforest within an hour.

Oahu also has a lot of year-round waterfall hikes. Don’t take waterfalls for granted in Hawaii, many dry-up during the summer months.

Best Hawaiian Island for Hiking Oahu

3. Island Views

The hiking trails on Oahu were built for the views they provide. With gradual, steep, or staired climbs, all skill levels can find a trail to get ocean views or look into a crater.

The viewing platform at the end of the Diamond Head Hike gives you a stunning view of Waikiki Beach and Honolulu.

Find a pillbox to hike to for sunrise or sunset views. Built during WWII to spot enemy combatants, these pillboxes now make a great spot to face the sunrise in warrior pose.

Vew from Olomana Hike Oahu

4. Waterfall Hikes

Hiking to a waterfall on Oahu is quick and easy. Oahu has family-friendly waterfall hikes near the major resort areas or more advanced hiking trails to secluded waterfalls and cliff jumping locations.

I was always on the hunt for Oahu waterfall hikes as swimming in a waterfall is my definition of a perfect day. Just beware, some waterfalls dry up during the dry summer months so look for updates on AllTrails .

See my favorite waterfall hikes below.

Maunawili Falls Trail Oahu Best Hikes

5. Beginner to Advanced Hiking

Our toddler Henry enjoys being outdoors more than Erica and me. Maui offers safe and easy trails for him but only a few. Oahu, on the other hand, has many trails that we can conquer with Henry either in his Ergo-carrier, a stroller, or walking with us.

Best Hawaii Hikes Oahu Family

Oahu’s large quantity of trails means you can find a trail that is fun and safe for everyone in your party. Because believe me, some Oahu trails are nutty on the dangerous factor. Like Pali Notches near Honolulu that is rocky, slippery, and walks along a ridgeline that drops off in both directions. Oh, and strong gusts have been known to knock hikers off the cliff.

6. Short Hikes, Long Hikes, Loop Trails

Everything you need is on Oahu. If you can’t find a trail you like on Oahu, then perhaps you should stay home. I kid, but really, you will find a trail you will love. Check out my favorite hikes and my favorite Oahu hiking websites in reason #8.

You will be able to find an Oahu hike that is 30-minutes for the whole family or 30-minutes for your super-fit young friend with good medical insurance.

Diamond Head Stairs Oahu Best Hikes

7. Trails are Well Maintained

Local Oahu volunteers tend the trails. They haul shovels up the mountain to put the mud back on the trail.

My favorite is all the climbing ropes. Grab on to a nylon rope to hoist yourself up a boulder or a slippery section. Some trails have stairs and footbridges.

You will be miles away from the trailhead at the top of a peak and still find a small staircase. Oahu’s trail communities are the best in Hawaii.

8. Trails on Oahu are Well Documented

Guidebooks, websites, and posted signs make Oahu hiking easy. Nothing is more frustrating than (a) finding the hike you want on your vacation and (b) not being able to find the trailhead.

Even Google Maps does a great job with hiking trails. The larger population on Oahu means there are more people to put trail data into Google.

On Oahu, that shouldn’t happen to you. Trailheads are well marked and there are copious online sources with good directions.

My favorite Oahu hiking websites for trailhead directions and trail ideas:

🍍 AllTrails

🍍 Oahu Hike

🍍 Google Maps

🍍 Unreal Hawaii

9. Trails are Close to Resort Areas

The best hikes on Oahu are near Honolulu, Ko Olina, Kailua, and Haleiwa Town on the North Shore. You can make a day of hiking or tack it onto your north shore itinerary.

There are a ton of hikes off the Pali Highway, the road between Honolulu and Kailua and Kaneohe.

Going to the white-sand Lanikai beach in Kailua for the day? Then you can’t miss the Lanikai Pillbox Hike (Kaiwa Ridge Trail). Get there early for sunrise and then go to Boots and Kimo’s for breakfast in Kailua. You are welcome.

10. City to Solitude

Honolulu and Waikiki are fun but crowded. To get away from it all, you only need to drive 20-minutes. Oahu is the best for hiking because the trails are so close to the big city. Diamond Head, Moana Falls, Pali Highway, etc. are all within a short drive from Honolulu.

Enjoy the peace and quiet on an Oahu hike.

Best Hikes in Hawaii (Oahu)

Here are my favorite hikes on Oahu from beginner to advanced with a few waterfall hikes thrown in. Click the link to get the AllTrails or GoogleMaps information on finding the trails and details on the hike s.

Oahu Hikes Listed from Easiest to Hardest

Waimea Valley Falls: A short ¾ of a mile walk on a paved path through a tropical garden ends at the stunning 45-foot drop Waimea Falls. Admission to the valley isn’t free (but at a good price) and is worth it for a safe waterfall swim for the whole family, plus cultural activities, we found it well worth it.

Directions to Waimea Valley Falls

Waimea Falls Easy Hike Oahu

Makapu’u Lighthouse (Kaiwi Scenic Shoreline): Walk a paved road with a 500-foot gradual climb to picture-perfect views from Makapu’u point. You will be able to see Koko Crater, Makapuu Beach, the windward coast, and on a clear day be able to see Lanai and Molokai islands. This is a great hike on the dry side of the island with kids. Takes 30-minutes to reach the point.

Directions to Makapu’u Lighthouse Trail

Diamond Head Crater: The most popular hike on Oahu and one of our favorites. If you are staying in Waikiki, Diamond Head is the perfect hike to shake off the jet-lag. For toddlers to seniors, the climb to the top is for everyone. Get there before 9:00 am to beat the crowds. The hike to the top and back down is about one hour.

Directions to Diamond Head Crater

Diamond Hide Hike Best in Honolulu

Maunawili Falls Trail: An easy 1.5-mile hike to a 20-foot waterfall with a swimming hole. I enjoy jumping off the falls into the pool below (swim at your own risk). The trail gets muddy but it is an easy hike for a classic Hawaii waterfall.

Directions to Maunawili Falls Trail

Ehukai Pillbox Hike: Less crowded than the Pink Pillbox hike on the west side and the Lanikai Pillbox above Lanikai Beach, the Ehukai Pillbox hike or Sunset Pillbox Hike provides the same great views and a moderate climb. The steepness, in the beginning, is why it is moderate. The pillbox is behind Sunset Elementary School on the North Shore. Get there for sunset as the name suggests.

Directions to Ehukai Pillbox Hike

Manoa Falls Hike: A quick drive from Waikiki, up the Manao Valley is Manoa Falls. A 150-foot waterfall will greet you after an hour’s hike through lush jungles. A snack shack at the trailhead is a welcome break after the hike. This is the best waterfall close to Waikiki.

Directions to Manoa Falls Trail

See the video below for more information on hiking Manoa Falls.

Kaena Point Hike: If you want to escape from the bustle of life or Waikiki, head to the end of the island – Kaena Point. The remains of a railroad track and abandoned cars will be your only other hikers. This hike is on the dry-side of the island so bring water as it gets hot but you will see the natural beauty of Hawaii on this shoreline walk.

Directions to Kaena Point Hike

Koko Crater Tramway Trail : This is when my favorite hikes on Oahu start to get brutal. You can climb up an old railroad track, up 1,048 stairs, to amazing views of Hanauma Bay and the east coast of Oahu. Give yourself a physical challenge during your vacation! It will be worth the climb.

Directions to Koko Crater Trail

Ka’au Crater Hike: Climb to the top of a volcanic crater. Where few ever make it compared to Diamond Head. This jungle hike has stairs, waterfall swims, waterfall climbs, and you will be on the lookout for dinosaurs. Straight out of Jurrasic Park, this hike is a challenge at three to four hours but the view inside the crater is stunning.

Directions to Ka’au Crater Hike

Wiliwilinue Ridge Trail: Muddy, slippery, rope climbs, stairs cut into the mud is what you will find as you follow a ridge to the top of the mountain. Behind you is Waikiki and the other side is the Pacific Ocean. While hardly any tourist knows of this hike, come early to get a gate pass from the security guard as the trailhead is in a private estate. 4.5-miles out and back distance. This hike will make you never forget Oahu.

Directions to Wiliwilinue Ridge Trail

Olomana Trail: My favorite hike on Oahu but also one of the most dangerous. Keep your eyes on the trail as there are sudden drops off the ridges. Hike on a day without rain. This hike is not for the faint of heart, be safe on the trail. Hike three peaks following their spine. The first peak gives amazing views. Don’t feel obligated to go on.

Other Hawaiian Islands with Good Hiking

The competition is fierce when it comes to which is the best Hawaiian island for hiking. To me, Oahu is the best for hiking after I reviewed all the reasons why. But here are the other three contenders for the best hiking in Hawaii.

Hiking on Kauai

The second best Hawaiian island for hiking is Kauai, per my rigorous review process and personal experience.

Kauai doesn’t have the number of hiking trails as Oahu but the trails are quality. Kauai has the Grand Canyon of the Pacific – Waimea Canyon – with lots of trails through its state park.

Kauai Hiking Waimea Canyon

The most popular and rigorous hiking trail on Kauai is the Na Pali Coast Trail. The steep ocean cliffs make hiking or a zodiac boat the only way to reach the lush Kalalau Valley, the remotest valley in Hawaii. My two friends and I did the 22-mile roundtrip hike in 36-hours. Once we reached the valley, we hiked up its stream for a swim, then swam to the hidden beach cove, showered in a waterfall on the beach, slept on the beach, and hiked back just in time for our flight. Nowadays a permit is required but worth the paperwork.

Check out Kauai.com for more hikes on Kauai.

Kalalau Valley Kauai Hike Na Pali Coast

Hiking on the Island of Hawai’i

Hawai’i (Big Island) has over 300-miles of hiking trails. With the smallest population density, the longest coastline, five volcanoes, and eight out of 13 climate zones represented on the island, the Big Island is an outdoorsman’s dream.

Check out the following websites for the best hikes on the Big Island.

Hiking on Maui

Home sweet home, Maui. Erica and I love Maui but the hiking here isn’t worth a flight across the Pacific. There are jungle mountain trails, extensive trails through Haleakala National Park, and coastline trails that are amazing but there isn’t the abundance, views, and waterfalls compared to Oahu hiking trails.

If you are visiting Maui, don’t be discouraged as you will still find great hikes compared to the mainland. You are still in Hawaii, the standards are higher for hikes.

Our favorite trails are the following on Maui.

🍍 Waihee Ridge Trail

🍍 Twin Falls Hike

🍍 Waihou Spring Trail

🍍 Haleakala National Park – Pipiwai Trail and Waimoku Falls

🍍 Haleakala National Park – Sliding Sands Trail

Closing Thoughts on the Best Hiking in Hawaii

You will have a great trip with amazing hiking to any of the Hawaiian islands. Oahu will just make for the best hiking of your life.

Remember to be safe, read up on the trail information before you go, wear the proper shoes, and bring food, water, and your phone or GPS.

Even though Hawaii doesn’t have any dangerous animals or poisonous insects, the weather conditions and trail conditions can change fast. Be prepared

Have a great hiking trip to Hawaii! Preferably Oahu for the best Hawaiian hiking!

Which Hawaiian island should you visit?

Denise Wood

Denise Wood

United States

  • The best Hawaiian island for every occasion

Which is the best island to visit on your Hawaii vacation? If you’re planning a trip to Hawaii, this is probably one of the biggest questions on your mind - and for good reason.

The most commonly visited Hawaiian islands are Oahu, Maui, Kauai and Hawai’i (The Big Island), and they are all very different in terms of attractions, price range and best things to do.

If you’re debating between multiple islands for your Hawaii vacation or aren’t even sure where to start - this guide is for you.

  • Best for hiking: Kauai

Best Hawaiian island for first-time visitors

A resort pool in Maui, Hawaii

If you are visiting Hawaii for the first time, consider heading to Maui, which is known for its world-famous beaches, beautiful resorts and jungle adventures on the Road to Hana .

Maui is also informally known as the ‘rich island,’ due to the many ultra-wealthy tourists it attracts, meaning you also have incredible hotels and dining options. Some popular things to do in Maui include trying out the local restaurants, hiking, snorkelling, and, during the winter, enjoying Maui’s famous whale season.

There are many stunning places to stay in Maui , however hotel prices are considerably more expensive in comparison to the other Hawaiian islands. If you are planning to spend your honeymoon in Hawaii and you're looking for an incredible resort that will blow your mind, Maui is the place to be.

A young child with a boogie board at the beach in Maui

Are you traveling to Hawaii with kids? If so, you might want to consider visiting Maui, which has countless incredible resorts that are geared toward couples or family vacations.

Many of the large resort chains on Maui focus on pool areas and beach access that is child friendly, and many of Maui’s beaches are also great for kids - such as the Paia Baby Beach, Ho’okipa Beach, or Lahaina Baby Beach.

Maui also offers numerous activities such as children’s surf lessons, a visit to the Ocean Center (a popular aquarium for kids on Maui) and easy walking trails that make the visit more smooth for families.

Hawai’i (the big island).

Strolling along the beach on The Big Island, Hawaii

If your biggest concern when choosing which Hawaiian island to visit is budget, definitely consider visiting Hawai’i (The Big Island). The Big Island is largest in size in comparison to the other Hawaiian islands, and it is also more affordable in terms of hotel and food prices.

In addition to beautiful beaches, the Big Island also has areas that have more jungle-like terrain, and there is also an active volcano on the island. If you are looking for a more rustic, nature-focused vacation that won’t break the bank, the Big Island is a great option.

It’s worth noting that the Big Island is somewhat divided into two sides. The Hilo side features more jungle and volcano landscapes, and the Kona side is renowned for its beaches and sunnier weather.

Hilo and Kona are about three hours drive apart, so you may want to consider splitting your time between the two sides of the island. You can also choosing to stay on one side and make a long day trip to see the other.

Panoramic view of Kalalau valley Kauai

Hawaii is known for both its beaches and its incredible mountains, which give great hiking options that often have views of the ocean. If you are an advanced hiker, consider visiting Kauai.

Kauai has many hikes, but its most famous is the Kalalau Trail, which is ranked as one of the most beautiful and most difficult in the U.S. The trail is located in Kauai’s Napali Coast State Wilderness Park, and is 11 miles in each direction.

It generally takes hikers one day to hike in, followed by a night of camping, and then a second day to hike back to the trail’s start.

The trail is so famous because of its panoramic views of Kauai’s famed Na Pali coastline. Na Pali has been shown in movies like Tropic Thunder, King Kong, Six Days Seven Nights, and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

If you aren’t an advanced hiker, you can still hike the first two miles of the trail. This will allow you to experience some incredible views without completing the entire trail and committing to overnight camping.

If you interested in hiking while in Hawaii but short, 1-2 hour hikes are more your cup of tea, consider visiting Oahu.

Even though Oahu is Hawaii’s most populated island, it has numerous short hikes that give you beautiful ocean or mountain views without requiring you to be an advanced hiker. Some of the best Oahu hikes take under an hour and are easy to access.

Oahu is also a great fit if you’re looking for a vacation that is a mix of hiking, beaches and nightlife, whereas Kauai is a much quieter island that focuses more on nature.

Stay at Kauai Shores Hotel or Halepuna Waikiki by Halekulani on Oahu.

Best Hawaiian island to visit for solo travel

The view on a hike in Oahu, Hawaii

If you are traveling by yourself and wondering which Hawaiian island to visit, the best choice is likely Oahu.

Oahu is by far the most populated Hawaiian island, and has significantly more options for hotels, dining and transportation.

Oahu is also a popular destination for younger families, single travellers and groups of friends. This makes it much easier to meet other people while on Oahu in comparison to some of the other islands.

Popular activities on Oahu include hiking, surfing, snorkelling, checking out nightlife in Waikiki and enjoying shopping and food options in Honolulu.

The Best Tips On Where To Stay In Maui, According To Reddit

Figuring out where to stay in Maui for the first time can be overwhelming, which is why Reddit is a great place to look for answers - and it delivers.

Maui is one of Hawaii's most stunning islands ( and the best for snorkeling, hands down ), making it a popular destination for newcomers to the islands. With that, though, comes the unfamiliar territory of figuring out where to stay, and why. The island isn't small by any means, and there are numerous places that travelers might consider when visiting Hawaii, all making the choice that much more challenging.

When in doubt, Reddit is always one way to determine the best solution based on others who have had the same question. As it turns out, there's plenty to know about vacationing in Maui along with hotels vs. Airbnb, which towns are the best for certain types of vacations, and which places are best based on the weather patterns of each. This is what the forum had to say about staying on the beautiful island of Maui .

Related: The Biggest Do's And Don'ts Of Visiting Hawaii

Consider One Of Three Main Towns

The common thread (no pun intended) throughout Reddit when it comes to where visitors should stay in Maui comes in the form of three places: Kihei, Ka'anapali, and Lahaina. When it comes to determining which one is the best, travelers should also consider the fact that Kahului, another town on the island, is really only useful for the airport into which travelers will be flying, according to Reddit users.

  • Voted the top destination in Maui
  • Six miles of beaches
  • 25 minutes from the airport
  • Sunniest & driest place on the island
  • Good for swimming, surfing, snorkeling, kayaking, and whale-watching
  • Kihei's Kalama Beach Park is a hub for recreation, including surfing
  • Lodging includes condos, cottages, and small boutique hotels

Ka'anapali

  • Smallest of the three
  • Three miles of beach and also considered one of the best in Maui
  • Very culturally-centered
  • Great for beach activities such as swimming, paddleboarding, snorkeling, boating, and surfing
  • Lodging includes resorts and condos
  • Located on the western coast of Maui, largest of the three
  • Once a historic whaling village
  • 45 minutes from the airport
  • Known for its art galleries, unique shops, and great restaurants
  • National Register of Historic Places
  • Home to Front Street, which is considered one of the greatest (historic) streets in the country
  • Home to 55 acres of historic landmarks
  • Great for history buffs and those interested in Maui's culture
  • Lodging includes beach camping, hotels, hostels, and resorts

Affordability & Rentals Vs. Hotels

The next big thing on traveler's minds when visiting Maui is the cost to do so. It can be a tough battle between going with an Airbnb vs. a hotel or resort, and, thankfully, Reddit has some opinions on that, too. The overall consensus is that Kehei is the most affordable of the three which keeps it in the running for the best place for newcomers to Maui.

The downside of staying in Kehei is that nightlife isn't necessarily what it is in other towns, which was commonly mentioned throughout the thread. However, if visitors plan on doing most of their sightseeing and activities during the day, this shouldn't be an issue. Those staying in Kehei should also be aware that's the drive to both Lahaina and Ka'anapali - both of which are points of interest in Maui - is about 45 minutes.

Opting For A Hotel Or Resort

For some, the idea of an all-inclusive resort or hotel is something that's worth spending the extra money on. Since food in Hawaii is pricey, continental breakfasts and on-site restaurants are a big deal when it comes to booking a hotel over a rental property. Hotels and resorts also feature swimming pools (another Reddit tip) which also helps to justify the cost/night.

Some recommended looking into resorts that offer condo rentals, which are worth the price because there are no extra fees accrued. Travelers will be able to rent condos straight from the owners, which usually saves renters some money in the process.

Opting For An Airbnb

Some travelers prefer privacy and when it comes to Maui, the idea of having an entire house or condo to oneself has plenty of benefits. For one, the views are often better from private rentals. One Reddit tip was to avoid booking through Airbnb, though, and going straight to the source of the rental - this way, travelers can bypass Airbnb fees.

This also gives travelers the chance to rent a property that's on or within walking distance to a beach or an area of interest. Depending on what travelers are looking for, they might be able to score a great rental, in a great area, that will either a) justify the price paid or b) be worth the price that's paid.

Where to stay in Maui comes down to what a traveler is looking for, but Reddit has helped narrow it down to three popular locations on the island. When it comes to rentals vs. hotels or resorts, this is also dependent on a traveler's budget and interests.

Those seeking more budget-friendly options might find that a boutique hotel is best, while those seeking intimate beach time and full space to themselves might find a winner through Airbnb or VRBO, but can save money by booking directly with the owners.

In Hawaii, Maui council opposes U.S. Space Force plan to build new telescopes on Haleakala volcano

Local officials on the Hawaiian island of Maui on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, voted to oppose a U.S. military proposal to build new telescopes on the summit of Haleakala volcano.

HONOLULU — Local officials on the Hawaiian island of Maui on Wednesday voted to oppose a U.S. military proposal to build new telescopes on the summit of Haleakala volcano, the latest observatory project to meet objection in the islands.

The U.S. Space Force and Air Force want to build a new facility on the top of Haleakala, Maui’s highest peak, to track objects in space.

The Maui County Council voted 9-0 to pass a resolution opposing the project. The measure said Haleakala’s summit was a sacred place used for religious ceremony, prayer and connecting to ancestors.

“Haleakala is more than just a mountain; the summit is considered wao akua, or ‘realm of the gods,’ and continues to be a place of deep spirituality for Native Hawaiians to engage in some of these traditional practices,” the resolution said.

It said that the Space Force hasn’t finished  cleaning up  a 700-gallon diesel fuel spill  at the site of one its existing Haleakala telescopes. The spill occurred last year when a pump that supplies fuel to a backup generator failed to shut off during a lightning storm.

The proposed new facility is called  AMOS STAR , which is an acronym for Air Force Maui Optical and Supercomputing Site Small Telescope Advanced Research. It would feature six telescopes enclosed in ground-mounted domes and one rooftop-mounted domed telescope.

The county’s resolution urged the military to heed community calls to cease their development efforts. It urged the National Park Service, Federal Aviation Administration and the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources to deny the project permits.

The clear skies and dry air at Haleakala’s peak make for some of the world’s best conditions for viewing space, similar to the summit of  Mauna Kea  on the Big Island which hosts about a dozen telescopes.

Haleakala rises to 10,023 feet (3,055 meters) It already hosts multiple University of Hawaii observatories and an existing collection of Space Force telescopes called the Maui Space Surveillance Complex. Protesters tried to block the construction of a new observatory on Haleakala in 2017 but building went ahead and the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope released its first images in 2020.

A proposal by a consortium of universities to build a new observatory on  Mauna Kea  called the  Thirty Meter Telescope  triggered  massive protests in 2019.  The TMT project is currently paused while planners seek National Science Foundation  funding .

Hawaii's Kilauea volcano erupts in remote summit region

A geologist with the u.s. geological survey said the eruption did not pose an immediate threat to residents..

The Kilauea volcano on Hawaii's Big Island erupted on Monday following hours of seismic activity below the volcano's summit, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

Kilauea , one of the world's most active volcanoes, began erupting at approximately 12:30 a.m. local time, about a mile south of Kilauea caldera within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, a popular tourist destination that draws more than 1 million visitors per year. Webcam footage showed lava spewing from fissures in the summit, the USGS said .

Katie Mulliken, a geologist with the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, told USA TODAY the eruption poses no immediate danger to residents as it, so far, has been contained to a remote part of the summit, which is inaccessible by car or trails.

"There are really no threats to any communities," Mulliken said, adding that the USGS will continue to closely monitor the volcanic activity.

It was the first eruption in this region of the volcano in almost 50 years. The last one, in December 1974, lasted about six hours.

The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory on Monday raised the volcano alert level for ground-based hazards to a warning, meaning a hazardous eruption "is imminent, underway, or suspected." Further, the USGS issued a red aviation color code, which indicates a "significant emission of volcanic ash" is likely, suspected or imminent, according to the U.S. Geological Survey .

The alerts came after hours of escalating activity beneath the surface of Kilauea. On Sunday, around 400 earthquakes were recorded below Kilauea's summit, with the largest temblor reaching a 4.1 magnitude, Mulliken said. Seismic activity is common before eruptions and is an indicator of lava movement inside the volcano, she added.

The primary hazard of Kilauea eruptions is a high level of volcanic gas because of its potential effects downwind, the USGS said. Other significant hazards includes instability, ground cracking and rockfalls that can be made worse by earthquakes near the summit.

Authorities with the National Forest Service closed an area surrounding the volcano, citing "seismic unrest." Officials also closed the parking lot for the Devastation Trail, which takes hikers through a winding path that offers vistas of land still recovering from the volcanoes 36-day eruption in 1959.

Kilauea erupted three times last year, bringing more than 10,000  tourists to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park to see the fountains of lava. In 2018, the volcano erupted for three months straight, destroying more than 700 structures, including 200 homes on Big Island, and displacing some 3,000 people – many of whom were unable to return home over a year after the eruption.
