A band geared towards thrash connoisseurs with active-minds and mean-spirits, Aura Noir stand at the fore of metal’s definitive genre in an age where the underground is utterly besodden with bands. These Norwegian thrash stalwarts don’t so much tread the line between savagery and sophistication as stomp upon it, showering dirt in the faces of lesser acts with each smoldering crater of an album.

The first Aura Noir recording occurred in the winter of 1994, at first an auxiliary outlet for a creatively inexhaustible Aggressor. Perhaps unsurprising from a man whose credentials included such left-field legends as Ulver and Ved Buens Ende, this untitled demo is unsettling and manic in tone, stylistically restless and eclectic but with a strong and distinctive musical presence. While the disparate ideas present here would be further explored and perfected by Aggressor later with Ved Buens Ende and Virus, it seems Aura Noir’s true purpose would be to address a more distinct deficit.

Excluding a subsequent Aura Noir demo entitled Two Voices, One King (for all intents and purposes lost), it was the 1995 mini-album Dreams Like Deserts that heralded the entrance of the band’s other driving force, Apollyon. Drummer and guitarist for Norway’s dearly departed doom band Lamented Souls, Apollyon was also a self-taught multi-instrumentalist and his arrival appears to not only have helped cement a stylistic direction for Aura Noir but enabled the duo to alternate duties between the drum throne and microphone, bolstering the band’s dynamic both in studio and in a live setting.

Recorded on ‘borrowed’ studio time with the complicity of Mayhem’s Maniac, Dreams Like Deserts applied Aggressor’s distinguished dissonance to a thrashing template, drawing its ire from inspirational sources such as early Sodom, Kreator, Venom and Celtic Frost. A willful weaponization of imperfection and a repossession of early thrash metal’s feral potency, Dreams Like Deserts was conceived as a corrective measure to the increasingly droll and deluded black metal scene as well as a violent jerk of the arm for thrash that had skanked and streamlined its way to irrelevance. But Aura Noir were only getting started.

What was a gravely persuasive threat on Dreams Like Deserts would escalate into full-scale bombardment with Aura Noir’s 1996 debut full-length, Black Thrash Attack. With the band’s axis of evil completed by the coalition of Mayhem’s Blasphemer on guitar, Black Thrash Attack seemed to burst from the shadows of the most neglected recesses of 80’s thrash. Where recognizable riffs resurface in unabashed homage to old Sodom or Slayer, they are hot on the heels of twisting tremolo anomalies and foul percussive flourishes making Black Thrash Attack more than a mere revival of the early bestial instincts of their influences. With its conscious crudity and the abundance of ability on display, the album remains the primary reference point if not the very embodying emblem upon the banner of black thrash metal.

Though one might think any kind of refinement would be antithetical to Aura Noir’s stated mission, the band managed to pull it off with 1998’s Deep Tracts of Hell, taking impious plunge into the disorienting depths of their craft. Despite being down a man with Blasphemer preoccupied as Mayhem’s mastermind, the remaining duo managed to outdo themselves with this maelstrom of inimitable riffs and unpredictable songwriting twists, the resulting volcanic steam seeming to fuel the oracular hallucinations and esoteric blasphemies of the lyrics. Riffs ripped from Return-era Bathory quickly ignite and warp into the unrecognizable forms baring a black mark of the band’s very own, its oppressive atmospheres only heightened by the raw, ‘in the red’ production. 1998 was a pitiful year for metal by and large but for Aura Noir, 1998 cemented their growing reputation and reconfirmed the respect of fans and peers alike.

After the deluge of Deep Tracts, both Apollyon and Aggressor were active in a reanimated Cadaver and Dødheimsgard as was Blasphemer with Mayhem. It would be six years before Aura Noir would reemerge as the first release on Darkthrone’s Tyrant Syndicate Peaceville imprint with 2004’s The Merciless – as it turns out, a release boasting no less apt a title as their debut. Blasphemer’s fleet fingered leads, Apollyon’s inflamed, vengeful vocals and ripping rhythm guitar and Aggressor’s raving dictatorial decrees and controlled detonative drumming all collude to deliver some of Aura Noir’s most anthemic songs to date. With its compact and concise songwriting and a production as clean and dry as bleached bone, this enduring fan-favorite does not suffer its lack of murky atmospheres so much as thrive on the wholly riff reliant, firmament rending performances of all three members. Little did anyone know that the band’s future following this landmark release was uncertain.

By the mid 00’s, there was some speculation among fans that Aura Noir might be finished. While they could still function between Apollyon’s recruitment into Immortal’s ranks and Blasphemer’s defection to Portugal, a crippling brush with death for Aggressor in 2005 forced the heavily headhunted drummer to drop the sticks for good.

Fears were assuaged with the announcement of 2008’s Hades Rise. It turns out the disruption to the established band dynamic following Aggressor’s accident would not impede the dynamic of the album itself, quite the contrary – despite once again being temporarily reduced to a duo, Hades Rise is a dirty and diverse album perfectly complimented by a raw and organic production, some of the strongest hooks in Aura Noir’s catalogue from both Apollyon and Aggressor and performances that radiate urgency. Although not without the punctuated bursts of hair-raising frenzy at which the band always excelled, Hades Rise also proved Aura Noir was every bit as imposing at Venomous mid-tempos.

Following multiple tours and festival appearances throughout Europe and the Americas, Aura Noir let loose their far-from-forgettable-fifth album Out To Die in 2012. The band’s introductory release for Indie Recordings, Out To Die was the first album since Black Thrash Attack to be written as a trio – the lion’s share of the output stemming from Apollyon and Blasphemer. Despite some lingering reservations from the band regarding the final master, Out To Die’s sheer darkness and intensity is incontestable, managing to surpass ‘defcon Darkness Descends’ at its most exhilarating peaks while also arguably their most balanced offering.

In 2018 the Ugliest Band in the World unleashed their sixth full length on Indie Recordings, the semi-self-titled AURA NOIRE. With no overdubs or embellishments, the album underscores the band’s potency as a power-trio and reinforces their primacy among thrash’s primal pantheon. Aura Noire conjures the might of Venom, the versatility of Voivod and the majesty of Aura Noir.

Whilst having had a break from both recording and live activities for nearly 5 years, the Black Thrash metal stalwarts are finally returning to the live stage again. A dozen highly exclusive shows are planned for 2023 and will include the classic trio of Aggressor, Apollyon and Blasphemer performing selected cuts from their back catalogue. Drum duties will be handled by Tank (Kristian Valbo) courtesy of Norway’s Obliteration, a long time friend and stand-in drummer for the band.

Expect a career spanning set of blistering and relentless anthems from the masters of Black Thrash Metal.

Aura Noir Oslo, Norway

Aura Noir formed in Oslo in 1995 as a result of Aggressor and Apollyon's frustration with the metal underground’s trends and fads. They saw a gap that needed to be filled with something real, something metal. They intended to create a band that combined influences of 80s luminaries such as Sodom, Celtic Frost, Venom, Voivod, Dark Angel etc. Thus, black thrash metal was born. ...   more

Golden Ring Tours

An opportunity to travel in time and experience the medieval towns of the Russian province

Home / Russia travel Destinations / Golden Ring Tours

Golden Ring Tours Immerse in Russian heritage, architectural masterpieces & stunning landscapes.

Golden ring tours overview.

Our Golden Ring Tours take place close to Russia's capital Moscow, yet seemingly a world away, adventuring to the beautifully preserved ancient cities of the Golden Ring route is a must. The cities of the Golden Ring are perfect destinations for travellers seeking the idyllic, provincial Mother Russia of old. A must short detour when Visiting Moscow. Scattered across a rural landscape of rolling hills, flower blanketed meadows, rivers and streams. The cities of the Golden Ring were considered political backwaters by the time Soviet industrialisation took hold, escaping much of the urban progress that rapidly engulfed Moscow and its surroundings. Consequently, many locals to the Golden Ring still lead a largely traditional existence, living in tight-knit communities where the ancestral izba (wooden farmhouse) is the centre of daily life.

 Golden Ring Russia, Travel Highlights:

  • Regarded as open-air museums, be enthralled by many of the Golden Ring’s ancient settlements and architectural masterpieces . These include the UNESCO-listed monasteries and onion-dome cathedrals in Yaroslavl, the white stone monuments of Vladimir (the Golden Gates, the church of Boris and Gleb), and the medieval wooden houses and windmills in Suzdal.
  • Our Golden Ring Tours facilitate immersion in the colourful culture of provincial Russia. Towns such as Ivanovo and Kostroma still maintain a largely traditional way of life. When you visit the Golden ring, be sure to try the delicious traditional Russian cuisine, admire time-honoured handicrafts and unearth ancient relics of the Soviet times.
  • Discover the sacred places of the orthodox religion at their many cathedrals, churches and historical monuments like the Trinity Lavra of Saint Sergius, the Holy Assumption Cathedral and the Cathedral of Transformation.
  • Uncover the age-old allure of Russia by delving into the rich history and legends of the Golden Ring. From Russian princes and knights to the early Tsars and Mongol invasions, you will experience something straight out of a fairytale.
  • Admire the stunning natural landscapes of the Golden Ring dominated by rippling meadows, lush green forests and winding rivers used to link fortified towns in the middle ages.

Many Golden Ring cities date back to at least the 10th century, and played a vital role in Medieval history, associated with the formation of the Russian Orthodox Church, the reign of Tsars and the Mongol Invasions. When you go on a Golden Ring tour, you will notice that virtually every town is a living museum, made up of ancient forts, towering monasteries, imposing palaces and magnificent cathedrals. Recognised for their artistic merit as an important place in history, four sites on the Golden Ring circuit have gained UNESCO World Heritage Site status, including the 1,000-year-old city of Yaroslavl.

Theatres in Moscow

Cultural life of Moscow city is various and rich! Operas, ballets, symphonic concerts... Russian composers have created some of the most beautiful classical music. Russian classical music is very popular in Moscow. It is performed in many beautiful historical venues. Do not forget to include a visit to a concert hall in your itinerary when you are planning your stay in Moscow! And do it in advance.

There are almost no restrictions on dress code in Russian theatres. Visitors may wear jeans and sports shoes, they may have a backpack with them. Only shorts are not allowed.

A typical feature of Russian theatre – visitors are bringing a lot of flowers which they present to their favorite performers after the show.

Here are some practical advices where to go and how to buy tickets.

The Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theatre is the oldest, the most famous and popular opera and ballet theatre in Russia. The word “Bolshoi” means “big” in Russian. You can buy a ticket online in advance, 2-3 months before the date of performance on the official website . Prices for famous ballets are high: 6-8 thousand rubles for a seat in stalls. Tickets to operas are cheaper: you can get a good seat for 4-5 thousand rubles. Tickets are cheaper for daytime performances and performances on the New Stage. The New Stage is situated in the light-green building to the left of the Bolshoi's main building. The quality of operas and ballets shown on the New Stage is excellent too. However, you should pay attention that many seats of the Bolshoi’s Old and New Stages have limited visibility . If you want to see the Bolshoi’s Old Stage but all tickets are sold out, you can order a tour of the theatre. You can book such a tour on the official website.

If you want, following Russian tradition, to give flowers to the performers at the end of the show, in the Bolshoi flowers should be presented via special staff who collects these flowers in advance.

In August the Bolshoi is closed.

The Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre

This theatre is noteworthy. On one hand, it offers brilliant classical opera and ballet performances. On the other hand, it is an experimental venue for modern artists. You can check the program and buy tickets online here http://stanmus.com/ . If you are opera lover, get a ticket to see superstar Hibla Gerzmava . The theatre has a very beautiful historic building and a stage with a good view from every seat. Tickets are twice cheaper than in the Bolshoi.

The Novaya Opera

“Novaya” means “New” in Russian. This opera house was founded in 1991 by a famous conductor Eugene Kolobov. Its repertoire has several directions: Russian and Western classics, original shows and divertissements, and operas of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Seven hot Spanish TV projects in early development will be making their debuts at the inaugural ECAM Forum co-production market, unspooling June 10-14 in Madrid.

Six projects from emerging writing talents were picked out of more than 150 submissions by a team of writing experts, including Int’l Emmy nominated Luis Gamboa (“Promesas de Campaña”, “Control Z”), Estibaliz Burgaleta (“You’re Nothing Special,” “Cable Girls”), Gorka Magallón (“Los hombres de Paco,” “Tad, The Last Explorer”) and Susana López Rubio (“The Time in Between,” “Presumed Guilty”).

How content spending will grow in the post-peak tv era, 'the watchers' review: ishana night shyamalan directs a glossy woodland horror thriller. the twist the film is more promising than good, popular on variety.

With genres running a gamut from drama comedy to surreal neo-noir, social drama, biopic, and animation for kids, narratives are both rooted in the national and regional zeitgeist and punching wide.

“Fortún” (“La isla de Celia”),   for instance, by “Skam” Spain writer Beatriz Arías is a biopic about Elena Fortún, one of most famous authors of Spanish children’s literature, creator of the unruly female character “Celia” in her book series. It’s also the story of a queer novelist, forced by social conventions of the time – late 1920s Spain –  to stay in a closet.

“When I was a kid, I saw a TV series based on “Celia”’s stories, on RTVE,” said Arías about her project. “That character fascinated me. I identified with that rebellious and mischievous girl. I read the rest of the stories written by Elena Fortún, and I fell in love with them.”

Arías who has researched the iconic novelist’s life, notably in Tenerife, and interviewed the son of Florinda (the little girl who inspired the character of Celia), scooped a best TV screenplay award for the project from DAMA and Movistar Plus+ at the latest IsLABentura Canarias.

Another LGBTQ+ themed series, “Leather” (“Cuero”) by San Sebastian-born Iñigo Alkorta, is set in the sports arena, with the main character Aitor as a Basque pelota champion.

“”Cuero” addresses issues like sexual diversity, new and old masculinities, identity and a sense of belonging. I want to tell a story about characters with very specific socio-cultural particularities (it is set in the Basque countryside), who face universal and much needed changes in the narrative of our (still) hetero-patriarchal world, to which some cling to and from which others want to escape,” Alkorta told  Variety .

Also tackling social stigma and the difficulty to fit in, “She and Me, But Mostly Her” (“Ella y yo sobre todo ella”) deals with mental health, through the story of Claudia (30), who would rather lie to her friends and to the world, rather than accept her brother’s bipolar disorder.

Spanish-French creator Marta Ambel Meyer, who attended several European series labs including Eureka Series, MediaproLabs, DAMA Ayuda, has dubbed her six-part series as a “traumedy” or “sad comedy” about mental health, “specifically anxiety and bipolar disorder, and their impact on individuals and the ones surrounding them.”

“The idea for this series came from personal experiences and observations about mental health issues. I want to bring it to the screens to raise awareness and foster understanding of these challenges, presenting them with a balance of humour and sensitivity,” she said.

Rooted in a childhood trauma experienced by Asturias-born creator José Antonio Quirós’ (aged 10 he was forced by his father to go down in a mine as a punishment), “Fortuna Mineshaft” (“Pozo Fortuna”) is a social drama, set in the heart of Spain’s coal mining region, Asturias. Set in 1995, it follows a tragic mining accident, its impact and the secrets surrounding it, from the perspective of a group of widows. “It’s inspired by a real-life accident where 14 miners lost their lives,” said Quirós who plans to serve as concept director and will be looking for a producer and financiers at ECAM Forum.

In a lighter tone, although cast as neo-noir, “The Hive (“La Colmena”) penned by Álex García-Castellano Gerbolés, is a surreal thriller set in 1992 on the eve of the Olympic games. Private eye Ulises Parra is investigatig some “very, very screwed up murders.” References for the show are Robert Altman’s “The Long Goodbye”, Howard Hawks’ “The Big Sleep”, and the series “The Americans,” created by Joe Weisberg.

Lighter, brighter and set under the sun of Benidorm, the female-led dramedy “Estrella del Green” is also the only project with a foreign partner on board. Its creator and director Denise Moreno, is in fact part of the London-based collective Common People Films, behind the Netflix/Universal Pictures music doc series “Once in a Lifetime Series.”

The company’s head of Scripted & TV, Jonathan Duncan, serves as producer on the upcoming show, which attended the latest Torino SeriesLab.

Moreno, who was named by HBO Access as one of the top 25 emerging directors in 2020, said she got the idea for the series while holidaying in Benidorm, heavily pregnant. The story turns on an unlikely duo – a pregnant zillennial and a bankrupt diva in her seventies, who set up a weed empire in Benidorm. “It’s ‘Hacks’ meets ‘Breaking Bad,’ a feisty black dramedy by the Mediterranean, inhabited by Almodovaresque women,” says the logline.

Fun for kids and the whole family, the final ECAM Forum Series entry “Dibus”, is an animated series for pre-school kids.

Jose Antonio Vaca Cerezo who worked as creative director for the animation studios Futurum and Amuse, serves as co-creator together with motion graphic specialist Adrián Andújar. The adventure comedy for kids tells of Nico (6) who invents thousands of adventures for himself and his friends when he gets bored and starts drawing.

“With ‘Dibus,’ we want to encourage children to continue to draw, not only as a means of artistic expression but also as a basic and fundamental mode of expression for human beings, whatever their technical quality, and above all, to have fun!” said the co-creators who are looking for animation producers, studios and partners.

Besides the pitching sessions, the seven series will take part in a four-day training program during ECAM Forum. They will also compete for a Series Mania Award and a Serielizados Award, which will give them access to the two leading series festivals.

Rundown of the ECAM Forum Series:

“Dibus” (José Antonio Vaca Cerezo, Adrián Andújar) Genre: animation Format: 52×7’

Nico is a 6-year-old boy with a great imagination and love for drawing. When he gets bored at home, he takes out his pencil and dives into the world of drawing. There, together with his particular friends Moni, Bato and Chan, he will live a thousand adventures.

“Estrella del Green” (Denise Moreno) Genre: Black dramedy, thriller Format: 8×30’

Set in Benidorm, we follow two unlikely business partners – a pregnant zillennial and a bankrupt diva in her seventies, who try to set up a weed empire, to the beat of reggaeton, trap and Remedios’ ‘70s romantic ballads.

“Fortuna Mineshaft” (“Pozo Fortuna”, José Antonio Quirós) Genre: social drama Format: 5-6 episodes, 40-50 minutes

“Fortún” (“La isla de Celia”, Beatriz Arías) Genre: Historic biopic, dramedy Format: 6×50’

After losing her son, Encarna is forced to move to Tenerife, where she meets a little girl named Florinda, whose adventures will inspire her to create the character of ‘Celia’ and become the successful children’s writer Elena Fortún.

“Leather” (“Cuero”, Iñigo Alkorta) Genre: LGBTQ+ Drama comedy Format: 8×45’

Aitor is flamboyant and Mikel down to earth. Born in the same town, they are the greatest Basque pelota players and rivals, but also best friends who maintain a secret love affair. Eventually, they will have to overcome the prejudice of their sexist and homophobic environment to accept who they really are.

“She and Me, But Mostly Her” (“Ella y yo sobre todo ella”, Marta Ambel Meyer) Genre: Dramedy or “Traumedy” Format: 6×60’

It’s the story of Claudia, a thirty-something woman with many anxieties, who struggles to keep her life, built on lies, afloat, while facing the harsh reality of having to take care of a brother with bipolar disorder.

“The Hive” (“La Colmena,” Álex García-Castellano Gerbolés) Genre: Thriller mystery, surrealist neo-noir Format: 6/7 x 45-50’

About a detective, Ulises Parra, a “Philip Marlowe” with a Renault 19 and a Barça T-shirt, who has to solve some very, very screwed-up murders in Barcelona before the 1992 Olympic Games begin.
