Atlas Insurance comes in two options. Atlas International provides coverage outside the USA, while Atlas America Insurance covers people whose travels will include the USA. Each plan will also meet and exceed most visa and immigration requirements around the world.

If you are planning to travel abroad for six months or less, the single trip Atlas Travel Insurance Plan will provide you with the coverage you need. The Atlas Travel series plan can be used anywhere outside of your home country, so your trip can include multiple destinations. You can also easily extend coverage online or by phone if you need to extend your trip.

Atlas Travel Insurance offers some of the most customizable travel insurance plans available. Whether you purchase Atlas International (for people outside of the US) or Atlas America Insurance (for people whose travel includes the USA), you will have the ability to customize your deductible, your coverage length and your coverage maximum.

Overall Maximum Limits, Deductibles, and Coinsurance Options

Medical benefits and limits, emergency travel benefits and limits, why choose atlas travel medical insurance.

Many times the primary medical insurance in your home country will not cover you while traveling abroad. Also, it will not provide important services, perhaps essential ones, in the event of an illness or injury. Atlas Insurance includes crucial features such as translation assistance while being treated, doctor and hospital referrals, and assistance replacing lost prescriptions.

WorldTrips , the plan administrator, provides 24/7 customer service for our Atlas Travel Medical insurance members. They also many other services you'll need if you run into difficulty while abroad, from simple things such as lost luggage to a crisis like a terrorist attack. In the event of medical emergencies, political evacuations, and natural disasters, WorldTrips will provide you with assistance in making emergency travel arrangements.

How Much Does an Atlas Travel Insurance Plan Cost?

The Atlas International and America Insurance plans are relatively inexpensive per day. Your plan costs will increase with a lower deductible and increase with a higher deductible.

Atlas International Insurance Premiums - Traveling Outside the United States (Cost per Day)

If traveling outside the United States, use these rates for the Atlas International plan. This includes U.S. citizens traveling overseas and persons traveling between countries, i.e., a citizen of India traveling to the United Kingdom.

Atlas America Insurance Premiums - Traveling in the United States (Cost per Day)

If you are traveling to, temporarily residing in, or visiting the United States, please use these rates for the Atlas America Insurance plan.

Eligibility Requirements for a WorldTrips Atlas Insurance Plan

Individuals who are traveling outside of their home country and are at least 14 days old are eligible for coverage. If you are under age 65, you may select an Overall Maximum Limit ranging from $50,000 to $2,000,000. If you are age 65 to 79, the Overall Maximum Limit available is $100,000. If you are age 80 or older, the Overall Maximum Limit available is $10,000. The minimum coverage period is 15 days and the maximum coverage period is 12 months. You may purchase coverage in a combination of monthly and 15-day increments, depending on your needs.

Atlas Travel FAQs

When does my atlas travel medical insurance coverage become effective and when does it end.

Your coverage becomes effective on the latest of the following dates:

  • the date WorldTrips receives your application and correct premium,
  • the moment you depart from your home country
  • or the date requested on your application.

Your coverage will end on the earliest of the following dates:

  • the end of the period for which you have paid a premium,
  • the date requested on your application
  • or the moment you return back to your home country.

Does WorldTrips Atlas Insurance provide any home country coverage?

Yes, both Atlas International Insurance and Atlas America Insurance provide limited home country coverage. This benefit will provide for a set number of days of coverage for travelers if they return home for a period of time during their trip abroad. Policies with Home Country Coverage typically cover medical benefits related to a new illness or injury incurred during an incidental trip back to a traveler's home country. 

You must have purchased three months of coverage for the Incidental Home Country Coverage to be in effect.

U.S. home country:

  • For every three-month period you are covered, eligible medical expenses incurred in the U.S. are covered up to 15 days. Non-U.S. home country:
  • For every three-month period during which you are covered, eligible medical expenses incurred in your home country are covered up to a maximum of 30 days.

Should you change your home country's location during the certificate period, you must notify us of such change within fifteen (15) days. Your new home country will govern the terms of any home country or incidental home country coverage. Any benefit accrued under a single three-month period does not accumulate to another period. Failure to continue your international trip or your return to your home country to obtain treatment for an illness or injury that began while traveling shall void any incidental home country coverage.

Am I able to extend or renew my Atlas Travel insurance coverage?

After your initial purchase, you may extend your coverage up to a maximum of 364 days. So long as your coverage is continuous, your deductible, coinsurance and benefit limits will not reset. After your initial term, you can purchase a new policy if you decide to continue to travel abroad.

Extensions must be made online in WorldTrips' Client Zone. Payment must be made by credit card.

Which Atlas Travel medical insurance plan should I purchase?

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling abroad for twelve months or less, or a non-U.S. citizen traveling to a country other than the United States, you should purchase Atlas International Insurance . The Atlas International plan provides coverage and travel benefits for travelers traveling abroad but not visiting the USA.

If you are a non-U.S. citizen traveling to the United States (including Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands) for twelve months or less, you should purchase Atlas America Insurance . For any visitor to the USA, Atlas America provides comprehensive travel insurance and emergency medical benefits. Your travel can also include additional countries and you will be covered worldwide.

How do I add countries to my Atlas Travel Insurance plan?

New countries can be added to your Atlas Travel Insurance plan via WorldTrips' Client Zone. A new visa letter can be printed listing the various countries. However, it is not required that you list every country that you may visit during your trip. You should list the countries where you will travel to as primary destinations in your initial application.

Please note: The Atlas International plan will provide worldwide coverage and benefits for travel to all countries worldwide except for travel to the USA. If you are traveling to the USA, you should purchase the Atlas America plan, which includes coverage and benefits in the USA. 

Can I purchase an Atlas Group Travel Insurance Policy?

The Atlas Group plan is available for small or large groups traveling abroad for 5 days to a year. The group plan is available to employer groups, non-profit organizations, students, and others. The coverage and benefits are the same.

WorldTrips travel insurance plans

WorldTrip’s Atlas Journey travel insurance plans include medical coverage and trip interruption coverage for both domestic and international trips. The three travel insurance plans — Elevate, Explore and Escape — allow you to select the plan with the appropriate amount of coverage to meet your travel needs. 

Atlas Journey Escape

The WorldTrips Atlas Journey Escape plan was designed for travelers who are looking for basic coverage on their next vacation or business trip. 

The plan includes all the basic travel insurance coverages such as trip cancellation, trip interruption, trip delay, medical coverage, medical evacuation and baggage coverage. 

Of the three plans, the economy plan offers the lowest payout benefits. The travel medical insurance limit is only $50,000 per person in excess coverage. This coverage limit might be fine when traveling through the United States where your primary medical insurance would cover any emergency medical situations. However, if you are traveling internationally through countries that do not accept your domestic health insurance , you might want to upgrade your plan to include more medical coverage. 

Atlas Journey Explore

The WorldTrips Atlas Journey Explore plan includes everything the economy plan does, but increases the coverage amount for every benefit. This plan gets 5 stars in our rating of the best travel insurance . 

Atlas Journey Explore provides the same interruption benefits as the top-tier Elevate plan, but offers lower limits for trip cancellation , emergency medical evacuation , delays, missed connections and baggage insurance. 

The biggest difference between the Explore and the more expensive Elevate plan is that the Explore plan offers up to $150,000 in primary emergency medical coverage while the Elevate plan offers up to $250,000.

What worldtrips travel insurance covers.

The core types of travel insurance packaged together in WorldTrips Atlas Journey policies include:

  • Sickness or injury that renders you or your traveling companion unable to travel. 
  • Death of a family member, traveling companion or business partner.
  • Severe weather that causes your common carrier to shut down for more than 12 hours. 
  • Terrorist incident or civil unrest in your destination. 
  • Emergency medical expenses: Travel medical insurance helps pay doctor and hospital bills and emergency evacuations if you get sick or injured on your trip.
  • Travel delay: If your trip is delayed for five hours or more due to a reason listed in the policy, travel delay insurance can help cover the cost of accommodations, meals and local transportation while you are delayed. 
  • Baggage: Baggage insurance includes lost or stolen baggage, excessive baggage damage and baggage that is delayed more than 12 hours.
  • Travel Assistance Services: Multilingual travel agents can provide worldwide travel, medical, emergency, and security assistance 24 hours a day, seven days a week. 

What WorldTrips travel insurance doesn’t cover

Like all travel insurance plans, WorldTrips plans will not cover everything. While it is always a good idea to read the fine print before buying a policy, here are some exclusions to WorldTrips travel insurance plans. 

  • Traveling against the advice of a physician.
  • Medical tourism.
  • Intoxication. 
  • Pre-existing conditions, unless you qualify for a waiver of the pre-existing condition exclusion.
  • Participation in an organized sports competition or as a sporting professional.
  • Participation in bodily contact sports, extreme sports and certain adventure sports.

WorldTrips additional coverage options and benefits

You can customize and enhance WorldTrips travel insurance plans with the following add-ons, provided they are available with the plan you choose and in your state. 

“Cancel-for-any-reason” (CFAR) coverage

A “cancel for any reason” upgrade allows you to cancel your trip for any reason not already covered by your trip cancellation benefit, as long as you do so at least 48 hours before your scheduled departure.

Explore and Elevate plan policyholders can choose to be reimbursed for 50% or 75% of their costs with CFAR. This optional coverage is not available with the Atlas Journey Escape plan. 

“Interruption-for-any-reason” coverage

The trip “interruption for any reason” (IFAR) upgrade reimburses 50% of your trip cost as long as you are at least 48 hours into your trip when you decide to end your travels early. This optional coverage is only available on the WorldTrips Atlas Journey Elevate plan.

Adventure sports 

This optional coverage extends your travel insurance to include safari activities, bungee jumping, hang gliding and other extreme activities. This add-on is available for the Explore and Elevate plans. 

Rental car damage and theft

This upgrade adds collision damage and theft coverage for rental vehicles. The rental car coverage is an available add-on for all plans. 

This upgrade adds trip cancellation or trip interruption coverage in the event of your dog or cat’s death or critical illness. It also adds vet care compensation if your dog or cat becomes ill while traveling with you. It’s available with the Explore and Elevate plans.

Insurers could score up to 100 points based on the following factors:

  • Cost: 40 points. We scored the average cost of each travel insurance policy for a variety of trips and traveler profiles.
  • Medical expenses: 10 points. We scored travel medical insurance by the coverage amount available. Travel insurance policies with emergency medical expense benefits of $250,000 or more per person were given the highest score of 10 points.

In this Atlas Travel Insurance review, we’ll explore what plans they offer, what they cover, and whether the plans are worth it for you. Enjoy!

If you’re getting ready for a trip, you know it can involve a fair bit of planning. From finding affordable vacation ideas to choosing the ideal flights, there are a lot of decisions to make.

One decision you’d probably rather not deal with is choosing a travel insurance plan. Unlike scouting for the best flight and hotel deals, there’s nothing fun about thinking about the worst-case scenario. It’s tempting to skip it altogether – but don’t.

Anything could happen, and it’s better to be safe than sorry. The best travel insurance companies offer comprehensive coverage that protect your financial investment and your health.

Today I’ll review two types of insurance offered by Tokio Marine HCC-MIS Group, otherwise known as Atlas.

Atlas at a Glance

  • Started in 1998 in Indianapolis, IN
  • One of the first to make insurance products and services available on the internet
  • Sells three comprehensive trip cancellation insurance plans
  • Offers a multi-trip travel medical plan
  • Offers two customizable single-trip travel medical plans

Atlas Travel Insurance Products

Atlas provides a suite of travel insurance options to meet the diverse needs of today’s traveler. Let’s take a look.

Trip Cancellation Insurance

Atlas trip cancellation insurance plans protect the non-refundable deposits you make when you book your trip. They’re considered comprehensive plans because they also offer emergency medical coverage. There are three tiers available:

  • Atlas Excursion
  • Atlas Expedition
  • Atlas Enterprise

Atlas MultiTrip

The Atlas MultiTrip plan covers frequent travelers for all trips up to 30 or 45 days in a 364-day period. It’s primarily a travel medical plan, although it also includes trip interruption, trip delay, and baggage loss coverage. It does not include trip cancellation, so you’ll either have to use a travel rewards credit card that includes it, or purchase that separately for each trip.

Travel Medical Insurance

Atlas offers two customizable travel medical insurance plans that provide single-trip coverage for trips lasting 5 to 364 days. These plans also include trip interruption, travel delay, and lost baggage:

  • Atlas Travel
  • Atlas Premium

In this review, I’ll focus on the trip cancellation insurance and MultiTrip plans. If you want to learn more, you can compare Atlas travel medical insurance plans here .

Atlas Travel Insurance: What’s Included?

Atlas trip cancellation insurance plans protect you from financial loss if you cancel your trip or return home suddenly (for a covered reason). There are 3 plans to choose from – Excursion, Expedition, and Enterprise.

As an example, the basic Atlas Excursion plan includes:

  • Trip Cancellation
  • Trip Interruption
  • Baggage Delay
  • Emergency Medical and Dental Expense
  • Emergency Medical Evacuation and Repatriation of Remains
  • Common Carrier AD&D

Of course, the higher-tiered Expedition and Enterprise plans offer more coverage per category and offer extras like Cancel for Any Reason coverage and a Pre-existing Medical Conditions Waiver.

One note about these plans – they are not easy to find on their website. In fact, you have to get a quote (and therefore, already know your plans or have made reservations) to even get access to coverage amounts. We’d love to see coverage amounts front-and-center like they do for their MultiTrip and travel medical plans – without having to put in specific information first. Anyone should be able to see up-front how much insurance is provided.

Atlas’ MultiTrip plan is a travel medical plan that covers all trips lasting up to 30 or 45 days in a 364-day period. It’s an attractive solution for frequent travelers . Their MultiTrip plans include:

  • Emergency Medical Evacuation: $1,000,000 lifetime maximum
  • Repatriation of Remains: Up to the overall maximum limit
  • Emergency Dental: $300
  • Accidental Death and Dismemberment: Lifetime max up to $25,000 depending on age
  • Common Carrier Accidental Death: up to $50,000 depending on age
  • Personal Liability: $25,000 lifetime max
  • Trip Interruption: $10,000
  • Lost Luggage: $1,000
  • Travel Delay (12 hours): $100/day for maximum 2 days
  • Lost or Stolen Passport/Travel Visa: $100
  • Deductible: $250 per covered trip

Remember that while it includes trip interruption, trip delay, and baggage loss coverage, it does not include trip cancellation insurance. If you want that, you can purchase it separately.

Atlas Travel Insurance: How Much?

The cost of a travel insurance policy depends on several factors, including your age, the length and cost of your trip, whether you’re traveling solo or with family, and your state of residence. To weigh your options, get an online quote directly from Atlas. That said, these examples help illustrate how the plans compare in terms of price.

Let’s consider a 33-year-old solo traveler heading to Belgium for two weeks in June. He’s from the U.S. state of Georgia, and his trip costs $3,000. Here is what he would pay for each of the Atlas trip cancellation insurance plans:

  • Atlas Excursion: $91
  • Atlas Expedition: $107
  • Atlas Enterprise: $126

Now, let’s shake things up and see what the prices would look like if it were a family vacation. Let’s add his 35-year-old wife and their two kids, ages 7 and 10. With the additional airfare, let’s say the trip costs $5,500:

  • Atlas Excursion: $204
  • Atlas Expedition: $240
  • Atlas Enterprise: $280

In both examples, the jump from Atlas Excursion to Atlas Expedition is pretty small. Considering Atlas Expedition gets you an extra $100,000 in emergency medical coverage and the pre-existing medical conditions waiver, I think it’s worth it.

Note that adding Cancel for Any Reason coverage to the Atlas Enterprise plan would cost an extra $182. The standard trip cancellation coverage includes the most common reasons for canceling a trip, so most people probably wouldn’t add it on.

Atlas MultiTrip: How Much?

When buying the MultiTrip Plan, you can insure trips lasting up to 30 or 45 days. Let’s look at how much it would cost to insure the travelers from the previous example for all trips taken for 364 days.

Our 33-year-old solo traveler would pay:

  • $188 for all trips lasting up to 30 days
  • $230 for all trips lasting up to 45 days

The family of 4, ages 35, 33, 10, and 7 would pay:

  • $282 for all trips lasting up to 30 days
  • $345 for all trips lasting up to 45 days

Atlas Travel Insurance: What Isn’t Covered?

The nitty-gritty exclusion details vary by plan and can be found in your plan certificate. Here are a few things worth noting.

Pre-existing Medical Conditions (Certain Circumstances)

The Atlas trip insurance plans define a pre-existing medical condition as one you had in the 60 days preceding your scheduled departure. That 60 days is called the look-back period. Pre-existing conditions are handled differently based on the type of travel insurance you purchase.

The Atlas Excursion plan does not cover pre-existing medical conditions in any circumstance. For some, this is a good reason to buy the Atlas Expedition or Enterprise plans instead.

The Atlas Expedition and Enterprise plans have a pre-existing conditions waiver. That means that if you meet certain criteria, your trip cancellation, interruption, and medical benefits will cover your pre-existing medical conditions. These are the criteria:

  • You purchase your travel insurance plan within 21 days of making your initial trip deposit
  • You purchase insurance for the full cost of your trip
  • You’re medically able to travel on the effective date of your policy

The Atlas MultiTrip plan has a look back period of two years. That means a condition is considered pre-existing if you had it in the two years prior to the beginning of your coverage.

The MultiTrip plan does not cover pre-existing medical conditions except in cases of acute onset. Acute onset means a sudden, unexpected, brief flare-up that requires urgent care (excluding chronic or congenital conditions).

Adventure Sports

There’s a whole list of adventure sports that aren’t covered. That means if you sustain an injury while taking part in one, Atlas won’t pay your claim. Here are a few notable exclusions:

  • Parachuting
  • Any kind of race
  • Base jumping
  • Independent scuba diving
  • Spelunking or cave diving
  • Whitewater rafting
  • Big game hunting

If any of these are an important part of your travel plans, you should look elsewhere for your insurance needs. We recommend checking out World Nomads , which is known for its adventure sports coverage.

Lost or Damaged Medical Items

It’s important to note that baggage/personal effects and baggage delay coverage do not cover loss or damage to medical items you may travel with. This includes:

  • Eyeglasses, sunglasses, and contacts
  • Artificial teeth and dental bridges
  • Hearing aids
  • Prosthetic devices
  • Prescribed medications
  • Retainers and orthodontic devices

The best course of action is to keep these items in your carry-on luggage to reduce the chance of loss or damage.

Standard Exclusions

As is the case with most travel insurance providers, Atlas does not cover losses related to:

  • Anything self-inflicted
  • War, invasion, acts of foreign enemies, civil war, hostilities between nations
  • Any non-emergency medical treatment
  • Injury or sickness when traveling against the advice of a physician
  • Participation in professional sports, piloting, or military training exercises

Atlas Travel Insurance: Who Can be Covered?

Two of the Atlas trip cancellation plans, Atlas Expedition and Atlas Enterprise, cover travelers up to age 99. This is something to consider if you or someone you are traveling with is a senior. Atlas Excursion provides coverage to age 75. Atlas MultiTrip provides coverage to travelers aged 14 days to 75 years.

Atlas Travel Insurance Pros and Cons

Who should buy atlas travel insurance.

Frequent Travelers – If you travel several times a year, Atlas MultiTrip can save you money.

Travelers Who Need an All-In-One Insurance Product – If you need to insure your non-refundable trip deposits but you also want high levels of medical coverage, the Atlas Expedition or Enterprise plans will be a good fit for you. They come with a generous $150,000 or $200,000 in medical coverage.

Travelers Who Need Cancel For Any Reason Coverage – The Atlas Enterprise plan comes with optional Cancel for Any Reason coverage. Although it’s expensive, it will be worth it for some travelers.

Who Should Skip Atlas Travel Insurance?

Seniors Aged 75 and Over – Seniors over age 75 are not eligible for the Atlas Excursion plan or the MultiTrip plan. They can get the Atlas Expedition and Enterprise plan, but they can likely find more options elsewhere.

Adventurous Travelers – Atlas doesn’t offer adventure sports coverage, so if bungee jumping or mountain climbing are in the cards, look elsewhere. I recommend checking out World Nomads .

Frequent Travelers Who Need Trip Cancellation – The Atlas MultiTrip plan is a great option for frequent travelers, except for one thing: it doesn’t include trip cancellation insurance. If you’ll be making expensive deposits several times per year, the MultiTrip plan won’t check all your boxes.

How to Buy Atlas Travel Insurance

The simplest way to buy any of the Atlas plans is online. Start by grabbing a quote and reviewing the coverage. If you like what you see, enter your details and your payment information, and you’re good to go.

The Atlas trip cancellation insurance plans come with a 10-day review period. This means you can request a refund within 10 days of purchasing your plan if you change your mind (as long as your coverage hasn’t started).

With the Atlas MultiTrip plan, you can request a refund any time before coverage begins.

How to Make a Claim

You have 20 days for trip cancellation insurance or 60 days for MultiTrip insurance from the day coverage ends (the last day of the certificate period) to file a claim.

To start a claim, you must contact Tokio Marine HCC-MIS to give notice of your claim. You can do this online or by mail, and you can call to get help. They will advise what forms and information you need to provide.

Atlas Travel Insurance: Should You Buy It?

If you’re looking for a solid, comprehensive travel insurance plan that protects your non-refundable deposits and offers emergency medical coverage, Atlas has you covered.

Their Expedition and Enterprise plans offer robust coverage at a reasonable price. They are the trip insurance plans that will meet most travelers’ needs. In my opinion, the Excursion plan just doesn’t offer enough medical coverage for most situations.

The MultiTrip plan is a good fit for travelers looking to insure multiple trips a year but don’t need trip cancellation coverage.

Flight delays, lost baggage, illness, injuries, and other unforeseen events can disrupt even the best-laid plans. With a major disruption comes the potential for unanticipated expenses.

Travel insurance and the coverage it offers can help keep you protected and save you money in the long run.

Travel insurance policies protect travelers from financial losses should something go wrong during their trip. You can customize which coverages you want to include, and there are several to choose from.

"Common types of coverage include trip cancellation, trip interruption, baggage protection, coverage for medical care if you get sick or hurt during your trip, and emergency medical evacuation," says Angela Borden, a travel insurance expert and product strategist for travel insurance company Seven Corners.

Travel insurance plans offer nonrefundable payments and other trip-related expenses. While monetary compensation is a primary benefit, there is another valuable perk of travel insurance. It can provide peace of mind.

Your specific travel insurance plan (and its terms and conditions) will determine the minutia and specifics of what is covered. As with most other forms of insurance, a general rule of thumb is the more you spend, the better your coverage.

"Travel insurance can be confusing, so it's best to research a reputable company that specializes in travel insurance and has a long history of successfully helping travelers all over the world," says Borden.

Trip cancellations and interruptions

A travel insurance policy can reimburse you for a prepaid, nonrefundable trip if it is canceled for a covered event, such as a natural disaster or a global pandemic.

Trip interruption insurance covers you if you're already on your trip and you get sick, there's a natural disaster, or something else happens. Make sure to check with your travel insurance providers to discuss any inclusions, coverage, and more.

Travel delays and missed connections

Travel delay insurance coverage provides reimbursement for any expenses you incur when you experience a delay in transit over a minimum time. Reimbursements can include hotels, airfare, food, and other related expenses.

Medical emergencies and evacuations

Typically, US healthcare plans are not accepted in other countries. So travel insurance with medical coverage can be particularly beneficial when you are abroad. Medical coverage can also help with locating doctors and healthcare facilities.

Medical transportation coverage will also pay for emergency evacuation expenses such as airlifts and medically-equipped flights back to the US. Out of pocket, these expenses can easily amount to tens of thousands of dollars. Certain plans may even transport you to a hospital of choice for care.

Travel insurance generally does not include coverage for pre-existing conditions. That said, you can obtain a pre-existing condition waiver, which we will talk about later.  

Baggage and personal belongings

Most airlines will reimburse travelers for lost or destroyed baggage, but be prepared for limitations. Travel insurance plans will typically cover stolen items, such as those stolen out of a hotel room. This may not include expensive jewelry, antiques, or heirloom items. Typically, airlines have a few days to recover your bag.

In the meantime, you can make a claim to pay for items like certain toiletries and other items you need to pick up. If your bag is truly lost or you don't get it for an extended period, you can file a true lost baggage claim.

A major perk on several travel credit cards is embedded credit card travel insurance . Typically, you will need to use the specific card for the transaction (at least with partial payment) for travel coverage to kick in.

Each card has specific rules on what exactly is covered. But one of the industry leaders is the $550-per-year Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card. Here's a snapshot of what is covered with this specific card:

  • Baggage delay: up to $100 reimbursed per day for up to five days if a passenger carrier delays your baggage by more than six hours.
  • Lost and damaged baggage: up to $3,000 per passenger per trip, but only up to $500 per passenger for jewelry and watches and up to $500 per passenger for cameras and other electronic equipment.
  • Trip delay reimbursement: up to $500 per ticket if you're delayed more than six hours or require an overnight stay.
  • Trip cancellation and interruption protection: up to $10,000 per person and $20,000 per trip for prepaid, nonrefundable travel expenses.
  • Medical evacuation benefit: up to $100,000 for necessary emergency evacuation and transportation when on a trip of five to 60 days and traveling more than 100 miles from home.
  • Travel accident insurance: accidental death or dismemberment coverage of up to $100,000 (up to $1,000,000 for common carrier travel).
  • Emergency medical and dental benefits: up to $2,500 for medical expenses (subject to a $50 deductible) when on a trip arranged by a travel agency and traveling more than 100 miles from home.
  • Rental car coverage: primary coverage for damages caused by theft or collision up to $75,000 on rentals of 31 days or fewer

More protections are included with cards with an annual fee, but there are exceptions. The no-annual-fee Chase Freedom Flex, for instance, includes up to $1,500 per person (and up to $6,000 per trip) in trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage.

However, there are some differences between credit card travel coverage and obtaining coverage from a third party.

"Credit card coverage does not typically provide travel medical benefits," Borden says. "For protection if you get sick or hurt while traveling, you'll want a travel insurance plan with medical coverage."

Whether you get your travel insurance in a standalone policy or through a credit card, it's important to review your plan details carefully. In either case, there may be exclusions and other requirements such as deadlines when filing a claim, Borden notes.

Knowing what travel insurance doesn't cover is as important as knowing what it does cover.

"Travelers should understand that travel insurance benefits come into play only if a covered reason occurs," Borden says. Most standard travel insurance plans won't reimburse you for the following:

Cancel for any reason (CFAR)

Cancel-for-any-reason travel insurance covers a trip cancellation for any reason, not just a covered event. your standard benefits won't kick in unless it's a covered event. For instance, you'll be reimbursed simply for changing your mind about taking a trip.

That said, CFAR travel insurance is not without its downsides. For one, it's more expensive than traditional insurance, and most CFAR policies will only reimburse you for a percentage of your travel expenses. Additionally, CFAR policies aren't available for annual travel insurance .

Foreseen weather events

Sudden storms or unforeseen weather events are typically covered by standard travel insurance plans. There are exceptions to be aware of. For example, an anticipated and named hurricane will not be covered.

Medical tourism

If you're going to travel internationally for a medical procedure or doctor's visit, your travel insurance plan will not cover the procedure itself. Most medical travel plans also won't cover you if something goes wrong with your procedure.

Pre-existing conditions and pregnancy

Those with specific pre-existing conditions, such as someone with diabetes and needing more insulin, will not be covered by most plans. In addition, pregnancy-related expenses will likely not be covered under most plans.

That said, you can obtain a pre-existing condition waiver for stable conditions. In order to obtain a wavier, you will need to purchase travel insurance within a certain time frame from when you booked your trip, usually two to three weeks, depending on your policy.

Extreme sports and activities

Accidents occurring while participating in extreme sports like skydiving and paragliding will typically not be covered under most plans. However, many plans offer the ability to upgrade to a higher-priced version with extended coverage.

Navigating claims and assistance

When a trip goes awry, the first thing you should do is document everything and be as specific as possible with documentation. This will make the claims process easier, as you can substantiate and quantify your financial losses due to the delay.

For example, your flight home has been delayed long enough to be covered under your policy, you'll want to keep any receipts from purchases made while waiting. For instances where your luggage is lost, you will need to file a report with local authorities and document all the items you packed.

Cancellation protection also requires meticulous attention to detail. If you're too sick to fly, you may need to see a doctor to prove your eligibility. If an airline cancels a flight, you'll also need to document any refunds you received as travel insurance isn't going to reimburse you for money you've already gotten back. 

Part of the benefit of CFAR insurance is the reduced paperwork necessary to file a claim. You'll still need to document your nonrefundable losses, but you won't have to substantiate why you're canceling a trip.

Each plan should be personalized to meet the insured party's needs. Some travelers prefer to stick to the bare minimum (flight cancellation benefits through the airline). Others want a comprehensive plan with every coverage possible. Before you buy anything, set your destination. Are there any travel restrictions or changes pending? Does your destination country require emergency or other medical coverage?

If the destination airport is known for lost or delayed luggage, travelers should keep important items in carry-ons. Lost or delayed luggage coverage protects insured parties in the event of a significant delay or total loss.

Second, check current credit card travel benefits to avoid redundancies. Savvy travelers don't need to pay for the same coverage twice.

Finally, consider your individual needs. Do you have a chronic medical condition, or do you feel safe with emergency-only medical coverage? Keep in mind, this does not include coverage for cosmetic surgery or other medical tourism. Do you have a budget limit for travel insurance? Asking and answering these important questions will help every traveler find the right product.

If you’re planning to travel somewhere this summer, you’re probably thinking of buying travel insurance.

Kingsley Hopkins is. He’s headed to Portugal and Iceland with his girlfriend, and he wants to make sure he’s covered for things like medical emergencies or trip disruptions, “or if a volcano erupts,” he says.

But getting the right travel insurance can be complicated. There’s no one-size-fits-all policy, and Hopkins, an assistant editor at a book publishing company in New York, has been spending a lot of time thinking about how to protect his summer vacation.

Why finding the right travel insurance is so hard

Most surveys suggest this will be a record summer for travel. How much of a record? Demand is so high that some airlines are afraid they will run out of planes. Now that’s busy.

At the same time, danger and uncertainty are lurking everywhere — wars in Europe and in the Middle East, the usual slate of natural disasters like hurricanes and maybe a volcano or two. It’s no wonder people are giving some serious thought to insurance.

Older travelers are particularly worried. And they should be, says P.K. Rao, CEO of INF Visitor Care . Claims by travelers over age 50 spike during the summer months.

“According to our claim data, medical emergencies tend to uptick during the summer, especially for those going on trips that involve outdoor activities,” he says.

But there are so many choices out there, including credit card coverage, medical evacuation membership programs and standalone travel insurance. What should you get?

You need peace of mind

But don’t just reflexively start shopping for a travel insurance policy this summer. Instead, look for peace of mind, knowing that if something goes wrong, you’ll be taken care of.

“Knowing you’re protected from unforeseen travel mishaps — like delays, lost baggage and even medical emergencies — can make the trip that much more enjoyable,” says Daniel Durazo, a spokesman for Allianz Partners USA .

As it turns out, there are several ways to get the peace of mind you need. And there are times when you can safely skip travel insurance.

This is when you don’t need insurance

Here’s when you can skip travel insurance, according to experts:

  • If you already have coverage. “You may already have travel coverage through your benefits at work, your credit card or through group benefits with an organization,” says Jiten Puri, CEO of PolicyAdvisor.com . If you do, there’s no need to buy more coverage. You’re all set.
  • If you’re not traveling far. If you’re taking a driving vacation and staying in a place where lodging is free, like a relative’s sofa, then there’s not much to insure. “If you already have health insurance, it may cover you for a domestic trip, so you don’t need to think about health insurance coverage,” says Joe Cronin, CEO of International Citizens Insurance .
  • If your trip isn’t insurable. Traditional travel insurance covers conventional trips with prepaid, nonrefundable components like airline tickets and hotel stays. You might find that you either already have coverage through your medical insurance, or the trip is essentially uninsurable.

So think twice before saying “yes” to optional travel insurance that your online travel agency may offer you when you’re booking a trip. You might not need it.

Here’s when you do need travel insurance

But most travelers should consider some kind of travel insurance coverage this summer. Here’s when you need the extra coverage:

  • If you have travel expenses that insurance would cover. “If you have many prepaid, nonrefundable expenses, it’s best to take out travel insurance,” says Lauren Gumport, a spokeswoman for Faye Travel Insurance . ”This includes things like flights, hotel rooms, tickets and activities.” The more conventional your vacation, the likelier travel insurance is to cover almost every aspect of your summer vacation.
  • If you’re leaving the country. “Your regular medical insurance might not extend coverage beyond your home borders,” says John Rose, chief risk and security officer at ALTOUR . Also, many countries require travel insurance for entrance. They include Bermuda, Qatar, Sri Lanka and some European countries.
  • If you can’t afford to lose your trip. “When considering travel insurance for your summer trip, evaluate whether you can afford to lose your vacation investment due to unforeseen circumstances like illness, weather disruptions or emergencies,” explains Robert Gallagher, president of the US Travel Insurance Association (USTIA). “Can you afford the financial risk if you miss your cruise departure because of covered flight delays? What if you have to cut your trip short because of illness?”

One of the most common mistakes travelers make is assuming their credit card will cover them. For example, I found that my credit card only covered my rental car as secondary insurance, which made it completely useless when I rented a car in Tampa recently. I had to buy a standalone policy from Allianz to cover the vehicle.

How one traveler insured his summer vacation

So how did Hopkins handle his travel insurance needs? Well, as I already mentioned — it’s complicated.

Hopkins says he always buys some travel insurance before he takes a trip, “but how much, and what I cover, varies,” he explains.

He decided that his path to peace of mind in this case was to spend a few extra dollars: He made fully refundable flight and hotel reservations, just in case something goes wrong. That would eliminate a lengthy claim with his travel insurance company or credit card.

But he still needed at least $50,000 in medical coverage with emergency evacuation because of his active schedule.

“We’re going to be doing a lot of hiking in Iceland,” he says. “And you just never know.”

At the beginning of the year, he decided to buy an annual Medjet Horizon plan, a membership that would get him from a hospital in Portugal or Iceland to a hospital at home, in case something happened.

For insurance, Hopkins checked TravelInsurance.com to find an affordable travel insurance policy. He found coverage through Trawick International that pays up to $50,000 in medical expenses and up to $200,000 for an evacuation.

“I’ve heard good things about them,” he says. “Hopefully, we won’t need any of it.”

How do I insure my trips?

I’m on the road about 360 days a year, so I’m always thinking about peace of mind. I currently use a Wells Fargo credit card with lots of travel benefits, and I have long-term policies through Faye and Cigna, which have worked fairly well. I also am a longtime Medjet Horizon member. If I rent a car, I turn to Allianz for my primary coverage.

I know — that’s a lot of peace of mind.

But I’ve also run into trouble and had to use many of those benefits. Medjet got me back home during the pandemic. Cigna covered me after a serious ski accident in Switzerland. My old Allianz policy took care of my medical expenses when I had to see a doctor in Santa Fe, N.M., a few years ago.

Like I always say, when it comes to having enough insurance, better safe than sorry.

Is International Travel Medical Insurance Required for Travel Abroad?

You must complete, sign, and submit a Claimant's Statement and Authorization form along with proof of claim (itemized bills, payment receipts, medical records, police reports, etc.) for every incident. ( Click here to download the form in Spanish ).

Filing a Claim on Behalf of Someone Else? If you are filing this claim on behalf of another person, you MUST fill out the section of the Claimant's Statement and Authorization form labeled "Supplement D - Authorization Form for Use and/or Disclosure of Protected Health Information " – also known as a HIPAA form. This section must be signed by the policyholder in order for us to speak with you regarding any of the policyholder's Protected Health Information (PHI). Without this signed form, we may only disclose to you the status of the claim.

There may be situations when you choose to appeal how a claim was processed. You may appeal your claim decision using one of the following methods:

  • Enter your name and email address on the PowerForm Signer Information page and click the “Begin Signing” button.
  • Click the yellow “Continue” button to the right.
  • Fill in all the required information on the form (as indicated by the red text boxes) and sign everywhere a signature is required (as indicated by the yellow “Sign” boxes).
  • Attach your supporting documents (medical records, receipts, itemized bills, etc.), if necessary, at the bottom righthand corner of the page via the yellow attachment boxes. If Your Policy Has Not Yet Started… On the “Shorten or Cancel Policy” page, select your coverage start date as your new coverage end date.   • Log into your Member Portal account.
  • If you are eligible to extend your policy and you do not need to contact a broker or plan administrator in order to do so, you will see the "Extend Policy" page.

How Do I Cancel My StudentSecure Insurance Coverage?

Most members are able to submit a cancellation request online in Member Portal . Note that only members who have no claims are eligible for a premium refund. After you create your Member Portal account (click here for registration instructions), log in and select “Policy Information” in the top righthand corner. Then select the “Modify Coverage Dates” box. If you are not eligible to cancel via Member Portal, you will see a message prompting you to contact your agent for assistance. If you are eligible to cancel via Member Portal, select “No” under the “Would you like to change your coverage start date?” question. Then select “Shorten or cancel your coverage.”

If Your Policy Has Not Yet Started … You are eligible for a full refund of your premium for free. On the “Shorten or Cancel Policy” page, select your coverage start date as your new coverage end date. Once you click “Submit,” you will be routed to a confirmation page. You will also receive a confirmation email. Your refund will be applied to the original payment method used within 3-5 business days.

If Your Policy Has Already Started … A $25 cancellation fee will apply. On the “Shorten or Cancel Policy” page, select your new coverage end date and click “Calculate Refund” to display the eligibility of the date selected and the amount that will be refunded. If Paying in Monthly Installments… - You may only cancel in whole month increments. If you select a date in the middle of a monthly installment period, the following installment period will not be drafted. - Only premium for unused whole months will be refunded.

If Paid in Full … - Only premium for unused days will be refunded. Once you click “Submit,” you will be routed to a confirmation page. You will also receive a confirmation email. Your refund will be applied to the original payment method used within 3-5 business days. Please note that after 60 days, no refunds will be granted.

A pre-existing condition means an illness, disease, or other condition during the lookback period immediately prior to your effective date of coverage for which you: 1. received a test, examination, or medical treatment; 2. received a recommendation for a test, examination, or medical treatment; or 3. took or received a prescription for drugs or medicine.

Item (3) above does not apply to a condition which is treated or controlled solely through the taking of prescription medication and remains treated or controlled without any adjustment or *change in the required prescription throughout the lookback period before your coverage effective date.

*Change in required prescription means the dosage or frequency of a medication has been increased, reduced, stopped, and/or new medications have been prescribed due to the worsening of an underlying condition that’s being treated with the medication, unless the change is: 1. between a brand name and a generic medication with comparable dosage; or 2. an adjustment to insulin or anti-coagulant dosage. Your Atlas trip protection plan will not cover pre-existing conditions that existed during the lookback period, unless you qualify for a waiver of the pre-existing conditions exclusion. This is the period after purchase in which you’re eligible for a refund if you decide to cancel your coverage. Review the policy documents for your plan and state of residency to see how long your free-look period lasts.

You can view policy documents for Atlas Journey or Atlas On-The-Go by using the dropdown to select your state. Then click the link for the policy of your choosing.   • Documentation supporting your reason for cancellation (e.g., completed attending physician’s statement, death certificate and obituary, jury summons, etc.)

For a Trip Interruption/Travel Delay Claim:

  • Documentation of the date you joined the trip and/or left the trip
  • Receipts and proof of payment for any additional expenses claimed
  • Documentation supporting your reason for interruption/delay (e.g., medical notes/records, death certificate, evidence of delay or cancellation by your common carrier including the reason for the delay or cancellation, etc.)

For an Emergency Accident & Sickness Medical Expense Claim:

  • Itemized invoices
  • Medical notes/records
  • Proof of payment for medical expenses incurred during the trip
  • Explanation of Benefits (EOB) from your primary health insurer (if coverage is excess)

For a Baggage Damage or Loss Claim:

  • A copy of your claim with the carrier that had possession of the items when they were lost/stolen
  • A copy of the resolution of the claim with the carrier
  • Itemized list of all items claimed, including the approximate age/date of purchase for each item claimed and proof of the replacement cost for a similar item from a retailer
  • If loss was the result of theft, a copy of the police report filed at the time of loss

For a Baggage Delay Claim:

When seeking treatment, please ensure that you provide your name in the same format as provided for your insurance policy. At the time of service, ask your medical provider for an itemized bill with the following information: 

  • Provider name and address
  • Provider tax ID (if U.S.-based)
  • Your name, date of birth, and certificate ID number

  • DX (diagnosis) code and CPT (Current Procedural Terminology) code
  • Request your receipt for payment and complete medical records from the visit.

For WorldTrips, it refers to those times when you or your family may have submitted a claim for medical care for which a third party is responsible. These types of claims could be car accidents, slip and fall claims, negligence claims, or product liability claims. In cases where a claim for services in the United States is in question, WorldTrips is responsible for administering the claim.

As part of the investigation process, you may receive a letter or email directly from WorldTrips and Equian asking you to provide details regarding an incident or paid medical claim. The date of your consultation or treatment and the name of the healthcare provider will be listed on the letter and the investigation will be allocated an event number.
