Elqui Valley Travel Guide: Explore the Lush Valley at the Southern Tip of the Atacama Desert

The Elqui Valley is a small but beautiful region in Northern Chile. Learn all about this magical oasis at the southern tip of the Atacama Desert.

Nicknames like “mystical,” “enchanting,” and even “supernatural” get tossed around when describing the seemingly out-of-place vineyards, farms, and bright stars surrounding the world’s driest desert. It’s not hyperbole.

I didn’t really know what to expect the first time I started researching Chile ’s Elqui Valley – but within five minutes, I was already checking my travel calendar for when to book a flight and I finally made it on my most recent visit to the Atacama Desert.

It might be the rich history of Pisco production (that delicious brandy made from local red and white wine grapes). Perhaps it’s the whispers of UFOs or that astronomers are flocking here in record numbers to catch a glimpse of the 300+ clear nights a year.

Whatever your reason for visiting captivating villages and cities like La Serena, Vicuña, and Paihuano, exploring in and around the Elqui Valley is a must on your trip to Chile .

Looking for somewhere to stay? Try the luxury boutique resort Solar Madariaga Hotel in Vicuña.

Top 8 Things to Do in the Elqui Valley

Explore the town of vicuña.

Pisco Elqui, Elqui Valley, Chile

The hometown of Nobel-winning poet Gabriela Mistral, Vicuña, is a lovely town worth visiting for its gorgeous central plaza during the day and stargazing observatories like Solar Elqui Donde Martita at night.

Explore delicious dining options near the town centre, like Cafe Zamora and the two solar-powered restaurants in nearby Villaseca.

Go Stargazing at Centro Astronomico Alfa Aldea

 Centro Astronomico Alfa Aldea

One of my favourite ideas for a trip to the Elqui Valley is to admire the quiet, dark night skies from one of the world-class observatories.

Centro Astronomico Alfa Aldea features incredible guided tours just outside of Vicuña. It’s a small group setting with access to telescopes, a 3D video tour of the galaxies, and a glass of wine (yay). You can also try Observatorio del Pangue, which has professional-quality telescopes and tours available in English, Spanish, and French.

Go Wine Tasting at Alcohuaz Vineyards

Alcohuaz Winery, Elqui Valley, Chile

Look at Elqui Valley, Chile, on a map, and you’ll see a fair share of wineries. Alcohuaz Vineyards is one of the best. Visit for an afternoon of tasting incredible Malbec and Grenache in a beautiful setting below the Andes in Pisco Valley. Schedule a tasting here .

Take in the Views of Paihuno from Mirador Cerro Pachón

Paihuano Elqui Valley, Chile

Located in the charming town of Paihuano, you’ll experience the most scenic panoramic vistas of the Elqui Valley from Mirador Cerro Pachón. Grab a sweet treat from a vendor during the day, like the mote con huesillos – a delicious drink made of grains and peaches.

Visit the Church of the Immaculate Conception

Church of the Immaculate Conception, Vicuna, Elqui Valley, Chile

The stunning exterior and tower of the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Vicuña draws you in from the town square with its bright red and white paint contrasting with the (mostly) clear blue skies.

See the Petroglyphs at Centro Magnetico Piedra del Guanaco

Centro Magnetico Piedra del Guanaco

You can see a bit of ancient history when you walk along the Quebrada del Pangue, where Indigenous Chileans left perfectly etched drawings of guanaco in the large rocks along the Route of the Stars. This guided tour is an excellent option.

A stargazer's guide to the Elqui Valley

Near the southern edge of the vast Atacama Desert, mountain rivers wind their way through a sun-baked landscape of vine-covered hillsides and serene villages, with Andean peaks looming on the distant horizon. This is the Elqui Valley, famed for its rain-free climate (over 320 days of sunshine) and remarkably clear skies.

Given its remote location, high elevation and reliably cloud-free nights, the valley is one of the best places on earth for stargazing. Major observatories dot the desert landscape, and back in 2015, the entire valley (encompassing more than 90,000 acres) was declared the world’s first International Dark Sky Sanctuary during the General Assembly of the IAU (International Astronomical Union).

Astronomers have long known about this unique place nestled between the Andes and the Pacific Ocean, just over 500km north of Santiago; it's home to four major astronomical research bases. In recent years, astro-tourists have also discovered its charms, and there are a growing number of ways to experience those magnificent star-filled night skies. The big date many stargazers have penciled on their calendars is July 2, 2019. Just before dusk, a total solar eclipse will pass over the western skies, and this is one of the best places in the world to see it.

Observatory central

The small village of Vicuña makes an ideal base for exploring the valley. Near here, a number of observatories offer guided viewings of the night sky. The Observatorio Cerro Mamalluca , some 9km northeast of Vicuña, is among the best known, and offers big-group bilingual tours and the chance to peer through 30cm (12-inch) telescopes at the moon, planets (Jupiter, Saturn) and various constellations. A short introduction provides a crash course in astronomy, followed by celestial viewings led by knowledgeable guides.

A view of the inside of an observatory dome, lit with a red light © DC_Colombia / Getty Images

The Observatorio del Pangue is situated around 17km south of Vicuña in an area with complete absence of light pollution. In fact, the only human-made structures in view are are the nearby scientific observatories of SOAR, Gemini, and Tololo. Enthusiastic astronomers lead small-group tours (maximum of ten people), on two-hour viewings, with a look at distant galaxies, nebulae, star clusters, and of course our own nearby planets through the T400, a computerized 16-inch (40cm) telescope. More avid stargazers can opt for three-hour sessions, which include a look through the T600, a 25-inch (64cm) telescope. All tours are offered in Spanish, English or French. Amateur astronomers and astrophotographers with the interest and time (and cash) can hire out the whole facility for an in-depth evening exploring the night sky.

Surrounded by vineyards just outside of Vicuña, Alfa Aldea is run by garrulous astronomers who lead small-group sessions under the starry skies. The visit starts with a short intro to observable phenomena, as well as the opportunity to listen to the stars via radio telescopes. This is followed by guided viewing in the open-air amphitheater (laser pointers pinpoint near and distant stars and planets) and a look through Alfa Aldea's scientific-grade telescopes. A welcome drink (a Chilean red wine made from the property's vines) and steaming cups of vegetable soup, plus blankets on especially cold nights, help cut the evening chill.

Star-powered towns

Around 40km southeast of Vicuña, the tiny village of Pisco Elqui is also a fine destination for stargazers. Charming B&Bs with lush gardens and spacious terraces are ideal spots for watching the sunset followed by a quickly darkening sky light up with stars. Although there are no observatories in the area, operators like Turismo Dagaz lead astrotours outside the village in lovely mountainous areas.

While you're in the area, you can take advantage of another stellar phenomenon — the restaurants of Villaseca that use solar ovens to cook their food. Around 5km southeast of Vicuña, several family-run restaurants harness the rays of the sun in custom-built outdoor ovens to bake bread, roast meats and fire up leche asada (flan) for dessert. Among the best of the bunch is Delicias Del Sol .

A long-exposure image of the stars spinning in the sky with a cactus in the foreground © Hortega / Getty Images

Make it happen

There are a few things to keep in mind before booking your trip to the valley. Be sure to check the lunar calendar for your proposed dates. When the moon is in its fullest phase (around four days either side of the full moon), strong moonlight greatly diminishes viewing of the night sky, and it's a bad time to be peering through telescopes at distant galaxies. Whenever you go, be sure to bring warm clothes, as it can get cold at night in the desert. If you're traveling with kids, check minimum age requirements with your chosen observatory. Some don't allow visitors under the age of 16.

Also, don't neglect to make contact before you arrive. Many places close during the winter (June to August – though 2019 will be an exception owing to the solar eclipse), and others book up for private events. To avoid disappointment, get in touch well in advance of your departure. All of the above places offer optional transport to the facility – a wise investment even if you have your own rental vehicle since traveling these narrow, remote mountain roads in the dark can be dangerous.

Man has been observing and studying the sky from time immemorial, and though this was once only a subject for priests, astrologers or scholars, nowadays this activity is within everyone's reach. Here in Chile you can take advantage of our particularly clear skies, technology, and landscape to take part in this fascinating activity.

Astronomical Observation in Chile

While throughout Chile the skies are good for observation, the northern skies are far superior than those in the south. The sky of the "Small North" region of Chile is recognized worldwide as the clearest and most transparent of the southern hemisphere.

This region, the IV region of Coquimbo , boasts 345 clear nights a year, and large astronomical observatories have been built here equipped with sophisticated and powerful instruments. El Tololo, La Silla and the European Southern Observatory at Cerro Paranal are some of the most famous observatories.

For expert or amateur astronomers, there are many places in this area to enjoy our skies, one popular place is the Elqui Valley . In these latitudes there are several important celestial phenomena to observe such as the Southern Cross, Alpha and Beta Centauri, and the Magellan clouds.

These are some of the better places in Chile to practice astronomical observation:

Norte Chico Observation Sites:

  • La Serena District: Region IV of Coquimbo. Quebrada de Tralca
  • Vicuña-Hurtado River Road: El Churque and El Algarrobo -Araya sectors
  • Uchumi Ravine.
  • La Viga Ravine
  • Paihuano Ravine.
  • Cruz Verde Hill
  • El Yahuin Hill
  • Cuesta Colorada.

Astronomical Observatories:

  • Paranal Hill (ESO): Region II of Antofagasta . 123 km (76.8 mi) south of Antofagasta, by the gravel road that leads to the Paposo National Park.
  • Tololo Hill: Region IV of Coquimbo. Located 87 km (54.3 MI) east of La Serena: 55 km (34 MI) through the Elqui valley road and then another 34 (21.25 MI) to the observatory. Guided visits.
  • La Silla (ESO): Region IV of Coquimbo. Located 156 km (97.5 MI) north of La Serena. Guided visits.
  • Las Campanas: Region IV of Coquimbo. Located 156 km north La Serena. Guided Visits.
  • Municipal Cerro Mamalluca: Region IV of Coquimbo. Located 6 km (3.75 MI) northeast of Vicuña. This observatory is open to the public.

For suggestions of sites, visit our Chile Destination section.

Recommendations

For a successful observation, we recommend the following:

  • Before watching, adapt your eyes to the darkness.
  • While in the dark, never expose your eyes to direct white light.
  • Use a red light, as they do not harm the eye and do not interfere with its adaptation to darkness.

The essential equipment for observation consists of:

  • Stellar maps
