Frequently Asked questions

Is this camping pillow machine washable.

While this camping pillow is not machine-washable, you can get it clean just by hand-washing. To do this, close the valve and use warm water with a gentle kneading motion, then simply let it air dry (do not use a dryer). Alternatively, consider using a removable pillow case for even easier washing.

Is this pillow difficult to inflate and deflate?

Not at all. The innovative design of this camping pillow features a mini multi-function valve that makes inflation, adjustment, and deflation quick and easy.

Will this camping pillow slip off of the sleeping pad?

All Sea to Summit pillows sold since 2019 can be secured to your sleeping bag using our Pillow Lock System for a restful night's sleep.

Will this camping pillow fit into the hood of a sleeping bag?

The regular-sized pillow fits perfectly into a sleeping bag hood. The large sizes won't squeeze into the hood, but can still be used for support and comfort while camping.

Is the Aeros Premium camping pillow really light and packable?

Yes! Aeros Premium camping pillows are light and compact. Packed down into a stuff sack these pillows could easily fit into a shirt pocket.

Is the Aeros Premium camping pillow more comfortable than the Aeros Ultralight?

This Aeros Premium camping pillow has a (non-detachable) stretch-knit polyester pillow 'cover' plus a layer of polyfill under the contact surface for optimum comfort.

Stop borrowing my pillow

I purchased this Aeros Premium Pillow as a gift for my partner, so that I could use mine instead of hunting for it among their gear.

April 26, 2024

Works great - had to return it though

I liked the pillow design but the button on the neck clasp was missing its other half. I had to return the pillow. The shape was nice though.

Best kit in my flight bag!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I use this neck pillow quite often when I am dead heading or road tripping!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I like the quick inflate feature, and the ability to release small amounts of air in order to adjust the comfort level. It packed up small and barely took up any room in my personal item on the plane. I also carried it with me on a tour bus for naps.

May 9, 2023

Popped Pillow

It worked well for a bit and was comfortable but when I needed it most it popped on a blow up.

March 1, 2023

Disappointed

Purchased for trip to Scotland and very disappointed. Back portion is to small to offer support and the sides are to big and pinch your face. Very expensive for such poor performance.

September 27, 2022

Incredibly comfortable, packable pillow for travel

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This pillow lives in the side door pocket of our car for long drives, and I take it on all flights. The case is small, sturdy, and compact, and folding the pillow back into it is easy.

September 13, 2022

Best traveling friend ever

I tested it during my last holidays: Calgary-Toronto-Madrid and the way back. Finally somebody who got it right! Thin neck and wider sides. Perfect design and super comfortable.

August 29, 2022

Packs small. Soft. Easy to

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Packs small. Soft. Easy to use. Provides better support than most foam travel pillows.

Triple Duty

Originally purchased as a knee pillow while on my thru hike. I have pulled it out of my pack for my husband to use when he falls asleep in his recliner. My dog decided she liked it as a pillow for her. We used it on our road trip to Amicalola Falls and then again as originally intended for my knee at the hotel after injuring an old injury on the approach trail. Then again on the 2 day road trip back home. This thing is still going strong and am excited to get the other pillows on my list from Sea to Summit. You can count on durability while the case is perfect for protecting it from accidental punctures while not in use.

Not at all - the mini multi-function valve makes inflation, adjustment, and deflation quick and easy.

Really better than a ‘bean bag horseshoe’ travel pillow?

Yes! When packed into it's stuff sack it can easily fit into a shirt pocket.

Our analysis and test results.

For this review, we tested the regular size of the Sea to Summit Aeros . We were excited to find an inflatable cushion that offered more comfort than you might expect from a very basic air-filled bladder. This is one of our favorite backpacking pillows for a good reason. In addition to being remarkably lightweight, it also boasts a very small packed volume. Even more impressive, it is significantly more accommodating and comfortable when compared to most run-of-the-mill inflatable pillows we have tested. It's also thick, simple to adjust, and easy to pack away. That said, we should mention that comfort does pale in comparison to more densely padded compressible or hybrid pillows in this review. That said, the Aeros is a worthy addition to your pack on multi-day backcountry ventures where size and weight come at a premium.

  • Performance Comparison

sea to summit aeros - for its weight and size, the aeros is the most comfortable...

The Aeros is significantly more comfortable than all of the other traditional inflatable pillows we've reviewed. This noticeably higher comfort level is accomplished by three key components: a soft outer polyester cover, a very pliable, baffled air bladder, and greater thickness. Additionally, one side of the Aeros is elevated an inch higher than the other side, giving you a couple of options to help dial in your ideal thickness. While the contouring did help cradle our heads, there is still a noticeable wobble to the pillow. This is also one of the smallest pillows we tested, so it doesn't offer any extra real estate for your head. It isn't unbearable, but comfort is not where this pillow excelled when compared to beefier pillows on our list.

sea to summit aeros - although incredibly thin and lightweight, the aeros still offers...

Weight, or lack thereof, is an area where this Sea to Summit model performs very well. Weighing only 3.1 ounces on our scale, this pillow is lightweight enough to all but disappear in your pack.

Although it is slightly heavier when compared to other inflatable pillows we tested, we still prefer to take the Aeros on extended trips because it's much more comfortable and easier to use than its inflatable peers. Weight is where spending extra money often pays off.

Simply open the top valve to inflate. A rubber stopper prevents air...

  • Packed Size

This backcountry champs packs away into a small cylinder. Taking up only 0.4 liters of space, it is easy to justify bringing it along. Here again, the Aeros is bested by other inflatable pillows we tested, yet it still soars ahead of the rest of the competition because of the other features it brings to the table. This pillow is great for backpacking trips lasting several days or longer. We also like bringing this pillow along while traveling, as it doesn't take up much space and is handy on long car or plane rides.

sea to summit aeros - this pillow's stuff sack is large enough to easily slide the pillow...

The Aeros provides firm support in comparison to most other models reviewed, and its convenient air valve also allows you to customize to your preferred level of support. If you like firm pillows, fill this one up full with just a few breaths, and it will stay that way until sunrise. Additionally, the ergonomic shape contours to your head and shoulders, making it a great option for side or back sleepers.

  • Ease of Use

One of our favorite features of the Aeros is its easy-to-use air valve. It fully inflates in just three breaths. And, if you need to adjust the air level, simply push the small button inside the inflation valve. When depressed, the valve lets you slowly release air until you've reached your desired firmness level. This is a great design that allows for fine-tuned adjustments without the risk of all the air escaping. Additionally, when it's time to break camp, the valve releases air quickly and easily, making easy work of storing the pillow. Packing the pillow back into the stuff sack is a breeze. Finally, the Aeros is shaped to fit nicely into the hood of almost any mummy bag.

Due to its lighter weight, the Aeros did tend to be on the small and slightly wobbly side. During the night, this pillow worked out from underneath our heads because it lacks the density of heavier camp pillows. Another drawback of the pillow is its single-layer design, which prevents it from being machine washed and dried. However, we were able to hand wash and air dry our Aeros without much additional effort. Also, as with all inflatables, blowing it up and adjusting it to our preferred comfort level was more work than merely unpacking the synthetic fill pillows we tested.

sea to summit aeros - this pillow provided firm support throughout the night. we also...

If you're an avid backpacker who enjoys taking long trips into the backcountry, this pillow is a legitimate option for any multi-day trek. The standout feature of the Aeros is its noticeable comfort for an inflatable pillow. So if you yearn for an equal balance between lightweight and comfort, this has good value. For its small packed size and weight, it provides way more comfort than your dirty fleece jacket. That said, the Aeros is primarily designed as a lightweight backpacking pillow, so if you tend to spend more time in RVs or campgrounds, this likely isn't your best option.

sea to summit aeros - the aeros pillow, fully inflated.

Overall, we are impressed with the Sea to Summit Aeros and feel it offers an amazing degree of comfort when compared to its relatively simple design. There are more luxurious camp pillows on the market; however, when packed size and weight are a factor, the Aeros shines because of its ability to also provide an elevated level of comfort, which can be hard to find in a basic, single-layer, inflatable. Backpackers using this pillow will immediately feel its value, as it is a definite upgrade from a mound of clothes from your pack or a climbing rope. Its packed size and low weight make it almost unnoticeable in your pack. However, what you will notice is a lack of neck discomfort/pain the following day. While it's not the best choice for car campers, backpackers and travelers who want an actual pillow without the extra baggage will appreciate this one thoroughly.

Sea to Summit Aeros Premium Pillow

rated 4.5 of 5 stars

I need a dedicated pillow. Having a good night's sleep is one of the most important things to me when camping. This pillow far exceeds my expectations.

  • Super easy to inflate and deflate
  • Weight is innacurate

I have searched forever for the perfect pillow. I have been using a Slumberjack 14" x 16" pillow I purchased many years ago. It compresses fairly small (5" x 10" and weighs 12.65 oz.). The pillow is extremely comfortable and was a hard choice replacing it.

I will not do without a pillow, I have tried and don't like it. I need a dedicated pillow. Having a good night's sleep is one of the most important things to me when camping. I will usually stuff some clothes under my pillow to raise the pillow a bit.

I also had a Slumberjack 10" × 20" pillow and it was too narrow. It would compress in half making it feel like you were wearing earmuffs.

I had the Therm-a-Rest pillow and it was horrible. I won't go into a review... it is just horrible... TRUST ME!

Sea To Summit Aeros Pillow Large

First off, I don't know why Sea To Summit's advertised weight is 3.7 oz. / 105g

The actual weight is 4.2 oz/ 119g and the label that comes with the pillow says 4.0 oz 114g, I just wanted to point that out in case any gram weenies read this.

20140924001.jpg

  • Length: 16.5 in
  • Width: 11.8 in
  • Height/Depth: 5.1 in
  • Weight: 3.7 oz/105g
  • Stuffed Size: 3.1 x 3.3 in/7.8 x 8.3cm
  • Color: Green

For a pillow, this is extremely pricey, however if you are really trying to lighten up and conserve precious real estate in your backpack, then this is for you!

From a comfort standpoint, the Nemo starts off feeling more comfortable due to the extra padding, but the Aeros wins out if you toss and turn and / or a side sleeper due to the height (thickness).

Both are great pillows, but the Aeros definitely trumps with the weight and size alone.

The Aeros is quite a bit thicker so may appeal more to side sleepers, I have to prop up the Nemo with clothing when side sleeping, this is not the case with the Aeros.

You can't beat the weight and size. It's about 3" x 3-1/2" this would fit inside a 450 ml mug.

Inflation took 6 average puffs, there is a three way valve type thing or at least that's what I call it. You pull on one tab that says inflate to inflate, open the other tab that says deflate to... yep you guessed it, deflate.

There is some sort of check valve that allows air to enter but not escape this not only makes filling easy but allows you to adjust the firmness of the pillow by pushing the valve button in with your finger.

I fully inflated mine and after about 30 minutes let out a bit of air to adjust for my comfort level.

To deflate you just pull the deflate tab and all the air whooshes out in about a second or two, I then roll up the pillow start stuffing in the stuff sack making sure the deflate is still open and facing the opening of the stuff sack, when its almost stuffed all the way in just close the valve tab and secure with the cinch cord and clip.

The price tag is a bit high but if you are trying to save some weight and precious real estate in your pack, this is a good choice.

So far nothing has beat my Flannel Camp pillow, that is the most comfortable pillow I have ever slept on. Field Report 1 "Brendan T. Byrne State Forest" Southampton Township, NJ 08015 Trip weather Friday Night high 57° low 45° Saturday 57° - 45° Rain all day till evening Sunday morning low 39° Loving this pillow.

I found my sweet spot with this pillow.

Inflation and deflating is a breeze a few puffs of air and its ready to go, deflating takes a second.

I ditched the stuff sack and store the pillow directly in my sleeping bag before stuffing inside a compression stuff sack. Field Report 2 October 2014 "Ricketts Glen State Park" High of 60° Low of 35° Rain, with a tiny bit of snow and hail. Three days on this pillow, I only inflated it the original day and it lost a little bit of air due to cold.

I have been playing around with a spongier fill and I prefer it over the harder inflation.

It took a while for me to find my sweet spot as I like the pillow fully inflated for height but it was a bit hard and it felt like I could not get my head high enough up on the pillow, before my shoulders hit the pillow, due to no taper (too thick).

Well, I found My Sweet Spot! I fully inflate, then deflate so it's spongier feeling, stuff between my Therm-a-Rest mat and Western Mountaineering MegaLite bag. There is minimal slippage...and it is extremely comfortable.

Toasty warm at 35° and very comfortable at 65°

Pillow is usually kept between the sleeping bag and the air mattress, it is on top for the picture. There is minimal movement and I need to tuck it back under my head when I toss and turn a bit.

The pillow is at its most comfortable if you stay centered on the pillow.

The Aeros is stored inside the sleeping bag with no stuffsack when deflated.

A lot of backpackers look at pillows as luxury items and leave them behind because they are too heavy or bulky. The new Sea to Summit Aeros Premium Pillow is definitely a luxury item because it affords its users serious comfort and support, but it weighs less than four ounces and compresses to the size of a lemon. Even more surprising, is that it has five and a half inches of loft and almost covers the width of your sleeping pad. For side-sleepers who require extra loft and support, this pillow is a necessity. This multi-purpose pillow is great for both backcountry and travel use.

  • Very comfortable and supportive
  • Very lightweight and packable
  • Effortlessly inflates and deflates
  • Impressive size
  • Seams need reinforcement, susceptible to tears

IMG_20140908_192142.jpg

The Aeros is offered in two sizes, the regular and the large. I tested the large.

  • 14 x 10 x 5 in.
  • 2.80z / 79g
  • 16.5 x 11.5 x 5.5 in.
  • 3.7 oz / 105g

Initial impressions

When I received the Aeros to test, I was shocked to see how small and lightweight it was.

IMG_20140908_191810.jpg

After I pulled it out of the stuff sack, I was also really impressed with how soft the outer fabric was and at the size that it expands to. I showed my husband the Aeros and he was so impressed that he went to REI and bought one for himself the same day because he said he had to have one!

Sea to Summit ergonomically saves weight by making a hybrid two-in one inflation/deflation valve, as opposed to having one of each valve, like similar backcountry pillows.

Two-in one inflation/deflation valve

0914140954.jpg

Scalloped bottom edge to center the pillow around your shoulders and offer support in multiple positions

Ease of Use

The Aeros Premium Pillow inflates with just two to three breaths and deflates instantly. It also packs away very easily in its stuff sack. I have encountered some backpacking pillows that are difficult to stuff in their stuff sacks, so I can really appreciate the ease of which the Aeros stuffs in its sack.

Curved internal baffles cradle your head, while a scalloped bottom edge centers the pillow around your shoulders to offer more support for optimal positioning of the head and neck. This pillow inflates to 5.5" and offers tremendous support evenly throughout the pillow.

Construction & Durability

I think that the strength of the bladder, fabric, and valves are all great. However, I am not impressed with the stitching on the seams of the pillow. They could use another round of reinforcement. A small tear occurred on one of the seams.

IMG_20140908_192309.jpg

I tested this pillow most of this summer. I slept on it five nights while camping in temperatures from 70-50 degrees. I tested it with a Big Agnes Insulated Q-Core pad and a Montbell Super Spiral Down Hugger #3 sleeping bag. No doubt about it, these were the most comfortable nights I’ve spent in the backcountry.

IMG_20140908_192743.jpg

I found the Aeros to be very comfortable and very supportive. I am a side sleeper, so a firm, high loft pillow is what I prefer. I tested it while sleeping on my side, back, and stomach. I found the Aeros to be comfortable in every sleeping position. As a side note, I also have bone spurs in my neck, so pillow selection is not something I take lightly.

I was very impressed with the softness and moisture-wicking ability of the polyester knit outer shell. It did a great job of wicking away perspiration on warmer nights. The polyester shell felt super soft against my skin. Imagine having a jersey-knit pillowcase in the backcountry. I also had initial concerns that the bladder or air bag might be noisy when not fully inflated. I found it to be quiet.

I did not have any issues with durability of the bladder, which is always a concern I have with air bladder pillows. I found it to be most comfortable when just under fully inflated. The lowest temperature I slept on the pillow was 50 degrees. Since I was not able to sleep on it in cold conditions, I can't say how much difference the insulation made, but I am glad that it does have it.

Anytime I am sleeping on an inflatable pillow, the valve function is always a huge concern for me. The Aeros did not leak any air and I never had to readjust it in the night.

I also used the Aeros multiple times on the couch and in the car on every road trip I went on this summer (including a 2,500 mile drive from South Carolina up the East Coast to the White Mountains in New Hampshire and back). It was wonderful to have the extra comfort and support in the car. It will definitely go on my next flight with me, as well.

The Sea to Summit Aeros Pillow is what I consider one of the must-have new items of 2014. From its impressive size-to-weight ratio to its outstanding comfort and support, this is one item that can't be left behind. I already had a comfortable backpacking pillow, but this game changing pillow will be in my pack to stay.

I do think that it has a high price tag, but I generally think most backpacking pillows are expensive. It is right on par with its competitors, but is much more comfortable than all others that I have tried.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read my review. Thank you to Sea to Summit and Trailspace for the opportunity to test and review the Sea to Summit Aeros Premium Pillow.

A luxurious blow-up pillow with a brushed outer finish that is soft and smooth to the touch. The excellent 2-way valve makes getting just the right pressure very easy.

  • Lightweight but tough
  • Smooth brushed outer finish

Having had my 8-year-old pillow spring a seam leak on a July trip to the Trinity Alps I knew with a 16-day PCT section hike coming up in August it was time to go shopping. Popping down to my local REI to see what they had in stock, the Sea to Summit Aeros Premium Pillow jumped out at me immediately.

I was taken by how much more sophisticated pillows had become. Rather than just a blow-up oval pillow similar to what I was replacing, the Aeros has a scalloped shape so I could tuck it nicely around my shoulder. They have even installed curved interior baffles to more completely support the head.

IMG_20170904_181521756_1.jpg

Not content with just making a simple air bladder, the Sea to Summit Aeros Premium Pillow places a synthetic filler between the bladder and the outer layer of 50d brushed polyester. This means you don't need a pillow case because this pillow is super soft to the touch. I continue to use a flannel pillow case out of habit, but it's certainly not necessary as the Aeros is washable. When soiled, just inflate and hand wash with a mild soap with the valves closed and air dry. Store the pillow flat with the valves open when not in use.

IMG_20170904_181658626_1.jpg

While the Sea to Summit Aeros pillow is not inexpensive, how much is a good night's sleep worth? For me, the answer was $42.95. After 16 nights of quality sleep during my section hike I think the Sea to Summit pillow was worth every penny. The quality of the pillow's construction should keep me sleeping well for years to come.

Completely changed my sleep quality outdoors. It's super comfortable, highly compact, lightweight, and durable. The only downside is the price.

  • Comfortable
  • Easily adjusted
  • Lightweight
  • Highly compressible

Who thought sleeping outside could be that comfortable?

From an item I thought I would never need, this had become an item I never go camping without. Ultralight, super compact, and amazingly comfortable, maybe the price is its only downside.

Like much everybody else, my first and only pillow up to this one, was a rolled fleece jacket, or if I was super spoiled, a fleece jacket stuffed in a stuff bag.

I thought blow-up pillows are just something easy to sell for the unexperienced first-time hikers; veteran thru-hikers like me must know better.

Oh man how I was wrong. I’m not sure what made me want to have one, maybe the new sleeping system I got, maybe the age, but in any case, I’m super happy I did. *I bought the regular size*

Comfort: Amazing. It’s very easy to dial the stiffness exactly to your need thanks to the valve that has a small air-release knob. The fleece layer of the premium version is much welcome as it's soft and breathable, with no plastic texture. The shape of the pillow allows you to sleep in any position.

**Sorry for not sharing my selfies online. Besides, the smiley face is a pretty accurate sketch of my face**

IMG_20190929_094348.jpg

Use: 3 breaths is all you need to maximally inflate it.

IMG_20190929_094314.jpg

Durability: So far had zero issues.

Packability: Easily compressed to the size of rolled pair of socks.

Weight: 80 g is not negligible on long hikes, but it's not a deal breaker either. The benefit of getting a quality sleep while trekking is most valuable and suppresses both the extra weight and high price.

Price: 45$ is too high in my opinion, but I would buy it again :).

I am an experienced hiker, but that's my first inflating pillow.

Wonderful pillow. Light, compact, comfortable, and great to improve any camping experience.

  • Quiet while sleeping
  • No color options

This is really a great pillow for camping. It is comfortable. The lining on top is soft without being too thick, which for me means my head doesn't sweat all night like it has with other pillows.

It is very compact and would work for all camping conditions. Whether you are car camping, or trekking into uncharted trails, this is so light and compact it will go anywhere without taking up much room at all. It stays well inflated throughout the night. And the outside material is soft, so there are no sounds made by the pillow. And it stays in one place through the night.

There are only two potential "negatives." The first is that, as the pillow is inflatable adjusting to your comfort level involves blowing it up to your preferred firmness, which is good. But while inflating it, the valve is a one-way valve, so you cannot let just a little air out.

When you deflate, it is essentially pulling the plug on the whole pillow and deflating the whole thing. So if you over inflate, you have to start again. But given that it only take 3-4 breaths to fill the whole pillow to maximum firmness, this isn't  big deal to me.

I will also note, I like a firm pillow and this can be very firm. Also, I have kids, so having different colors would have been nice, since each kid wants their own pillow and is convinced their sibling is taking "their" pillow.

But these are minor issues and I would still rate the pillow 5.

Thick, light, non-slip, and the best I've found.

  • Nonslip, light fleece surfaces
  • Thick, for good support for side sleepers
  • Easy to inflate and deflate

I've had five or six backpacking pillows and have tried using rolled up clothing. Each of these had problems. Rolled up clothing unrolls or is lumpy. Some inflatables are too thin, or have slick surfaces that allow them to slip out from under the head, or are too heavy and bulky, or some combination of the three.

The Sea to Summit Aeros (regular size) is immediately likable. It weighs 2.8 ounces and packs down into its tiny stuff sack to fit inside my camp cup. It has a dual purpose inflation/deflation valve. Pull off the main air cover to inflate and the big one-way valve doesn't allow air to escape. When you wish to deflate pull off the secondary layer in the valve cover and it deflates instantly. It's easy to make the pillow soft or quite hard and thick (5 inches).

The surfaces (both sides) are covered with a light fleece that feels good to the skin and reduces slippage on the tent floor or sleeping pad. Also, it provides a non-clammy surface in cold weather, though for snow camping I'd probably insulate the pillow a little with a jacket, though I've not yet tried it for that.

There is a larger size that's 5 1/2 inches thick and weighs 3.7 ounces. At REI the regular is around $40. I got mine on sale for about $27. I think I've bought my last backpacking pillow.

Good product overall, pretty expensive but definitely gets the job done.

  • Inflating is easy thanks to a separate fill/release valves
  • Packs down into almost nothing
  • Very expensive
  • Slips away from me in my hammock

This is a good quality product. The main selling point for me was how it packed into almost nothing, the size of a fist—very important for backpackers.

The material is good quality and the area you put your head down on is soft. There are separate intake and release valves to let air in and out, so it is very easy to fill up.

The only thing that it loses points on is price. It was around $44 at REI—much more than any pillow should cost.

Unbelievably light and packs really small.

  • Great valve
  • Packs down extremely small
  • Very light when inflated, moves around easily

Have always used synthetic pillows, just purchased the Aeros for a 4-day trip to Letchworth State Park. The weight savings alone make the pillow an excellent buy, but the size it packs down to is what really amazes.

When it comes to travel pillows, up until now there has been a trade off between comfort and packing light. While memory foam pillows offer the most comfort they are bulky and awkward to travel with and inflatable pillows have in contrast been lightweight and easy to pack but uncomfortable and poorly designed. This has all changed with the Sea to Summit Aeros Premium Traveller pillow which gives you the most comfort possible from an inflatable pillow. This pillow is quite simply the best inflatable travel pillow money can buy. Now you can sleep in comfort on your next long haul flight without toting around an enormous pillow.

The Sea to Summit Aeros Premium Traveller pillow offers the jet-setting adventurer an exceptionally comfortable pillow with minimum bulk and weight. Using the same manufacturing techniques as Sea to Summit's other premium pillows, they have shaped a high strength TPU bladder to provide ergonomic support when you are sleeping upright. The bulbous side arms provide significantly more neck support than traditional neck pillows, while the centre of the pillow is extra thin so as not to apply pressure to the back of your neck when pressed into a headrest. A soft 50D polyester casing is used for the exterior fabric, providing superior hand feel for your comfort. The Aeros™ Premium Traveller Pillow includes an adjustable neck closure to support the entire circumference of your neck, providing a more comfortable sleep.

The Sea to Summit Aeros Premium Traveller inflatable travel pillow features:

  • Adjustable neck closure for additional support
  • Made from soft, stretchy materials
  • Exceptionally compact and packable
  • Ergonomic shape and enlarged ends reduce the need to bend your neck for support
  • Narrows at the centre to fit snugly between your neck and headrest
  • Packs flat into a compact stuff sack for easy travel
  • Low profile multi-function mini-valve for fast inflation and adjustment

Specifications Inflated dimensions 39cm x 29cm x 11cm Packaged dimensions 10cm x 10cm x 4.5cm Colour Navy blue, lime green Weight 93 grams

This pillow has been improved several times since it was originally launched by Sea to Summit and we sell the latest version, which was updated in 2019.

Note: The above video shows the two different Sea to Summit Aeros Traveller pillows: the Aeros Ultralight and the Aeros Premium. We only sell the Sea to Summit Aeros Premium and not the lighter version as the Ultralight version is only around 23 grams lighter (23 grams is around the same weight as four sheets of A4 paper so the difference is hardly noticeable) but it has a seam around the edges that some people find uncomfortable. In contrast, the seam is hidden on the Premium version and it is also made from a stronger moisture-wicking material that is considerably more comfortable. It is simply the best inflatable travel pillow on the market today .

Book premium economy with this airline – it’s the closest you can get to business class

W e’ve all ordered the second-cheapest bottle of wine on the menu, but what about the second-cheapest cabin on the aircraft: premium economy? Is it worth the 50 to 100 per cent bump on economy fares?

The world’s largest airlines would like us to think so. They’re installing bigger, better cabins faster than you can say “upgrade”. The number of premium economy seats on all airlines on an annual basis is projected to treble from 4,000 in 2021 to 11,145 next year, aviation analysts Counterpoint say.

But, at first glance, the argument for upgrading is not so convincing. Take a look at the cabin. You certainly don’t get 50-100 per cent more space. The seats are only a few inches bigger – although the legroom is 5-6” greater and the seats come with calf- or footrests or both and double arm rests.

The cost per square inch calculation changes, however, if you are travelling in a pair. Grab the window and aisle seat pair and you and your companion have your own row. Almost all economy window and aisle row seats on long-haul jets come in sets of three while premium is 2-4-2 or 2-3-2.

Snag the front row and no-one can recline their seat into your face and you can get up to stretch your legs or go to the loo without disturbing your companion. Throw in the fact that some premium cabins have as few as 20-odd seats, compared with the 200-plus in economy, and the price bump suddenly appears to be much better value.

Things get better when you consider the other perks. Most airlines allow premium economy passengers to check in using a dedicated line and to board just after business-class passengers. Baggage allowance is also more generous.

Now that you’re sitting comfortably, what’s next? The clue’s in the name. Economy. Airlines don’t want to offer a business class-style in-flight service lest too many high-paying business class passengers opt to downgrade. Business-class cabins may make up only one third of the space on a long-haul aircraft but they generate up to 70 per cent of the profits.

That said, service is improving. Singapore Airlines and Japan’s ANA now offer champagne and the wines on Emirates are as good as business class on some other carriers. All airlines are offering better food and drink, usually served in china crockery and glassware, not plastic. You will be also served more quickly than in economy because the cabin is smaller.

The amenities tend to be basic. You’ll get earplugs, a toothbrush, a flimsy eye shade, a slightly less cheap-feeling blanket and pillow than in economy, and headphones that cancel noise – a bit. You are better off taking your own kit. For overnight flights, I recommend sculpted foam eye shades which enable you to blink easily, Hearos earplugs, and eucalyptus oil nose drops to ward off colds. Melatonin tablets help you to nod off and Elemis instant refreshing gel wakes you up in the morning. And, not sexy I know, but compression socks do help prevent blood clots.

Boarding and getting off is quicker and easier since the premium economy cabin is in front of economy. Emirates leads here because its premium economy cabin is at the front of the lower deck of the Airbus A380 so you can use the front left-hand door. All other passengers on the lower deck use the middle door.

The similarities between carriers generally outweigh the differences but there are distinctions which might help you make a choice. Emirates has the snazziest cabin, with cream leather and wood veneer, and it is staffed by a team of cabin crew dedicated to premium economy passengers. On the A380, it offers the best loo-to-passenger ratio – a generous three bathrooms for 56 passengers. The Dubai-based carrier currently has 27 A380s with a premium economy cabin that serve routes between Dubai and London Heathrow, Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland, Christchurch, Singapore, Los Angeles, New York/JFK, Houston, San Francisco, Mumbai, Bengaluru, São Paolo and Tokyo Narita.

Virgin Atlantic calls premium economy Premium, which is way better than British Airways’ word salad of World Traveller Plus . Virgin’s leather seats, softer lighting and more attentive service make its Premium feel more, well, premium than BA’s. On Virgin’s new A330Neo jet the seats have wireless phone charging and there is a self serve snack bar called the Wonderwall.

BA points out that members of its Executive Club loyalty programme earn generous tier points in World Traveller Plus, so it is a good cabin to book if you want to move up from Bronze status to Silver or Gold. On a return flight from London to New York JFK, the lowest premium economy ticket earns you 140 more tier points than the lowest economy ticket.

Qantas ’ is raising the bar on its new Airbus A350 jets, which will soon start flying the 20 hours non-stop from London and New York to Sydney and Melbourne. The 40-inch pitch (the measure of leg room) is two inches more than Qantas’s current premium economy and the same offered by Emirates, currently the class leader. There’s more privacy, too. “We’re redesigning the head rest to create a more pronounced wingback chair to give more visual seclusion, which is great if you’re travelling alone,” says Qantas’s designer David Caon. Caon is also refining “a new special pillow that integrates with the headrest and becomes part of the seat.”

The new seat will aid sleep. “You get a better recline, less because the seat back goes back more, and more because the bottom of the seat tracks forward and juts up, that gives you more of a ‘slung’ position. Combined with the footrest, it’s more like the old cradle seats that airlines used to have in business class,” Caon says.

ANA, meanwhile, is the only airline to offer premium economy passengers lounge access and drinks from the business class menu on board.

Singapore Airlines ’ passengers can use its popular ‘Book the Cook’ service to pre-order meals, but be careful: if you pre-order a meal, it’s hard to swap seats if you spot a better one that is free, since your meal is allocated to your seat. On its Airbus A350 jets from the Lion City to New York, it also offers six coveted single window seats at the rear of the plane. There is a new Out of the Woods amenity kit on flights longer than seven hours. (It is not clear why it has this name).

Lufthansa ’s premium-economy seats are in the same cabin as economy, which betrays a complete misunderstanding of the class system at 39,000ft. All the cabins on the major American carriers have leather seats – but somehow manage to look cheap.

What’s the bottom line? Premium economy is not as good value as business class since, pound for pound, you get more space and more perks in business over premium economy than you do in premium economy over economy. But choose the right carrier for your needs and snag the best seats and it can be money very well spent indeed.

Premium perks

Virgin atlantic: best for hungry fliers.

Generous service complemented by the best pantry full of snacks and drinks that you can raid at any time. You can also use the fast-track security when leaving New York’s JFK.

British Airways: best for night flights

A generous eight-inch seat recline makes BA a good bet for night flights. Book the A380 and you’ll be sitting upstairs so you can, in effect, look down on economy passengers. (It’s the little things…)

Emirates: closest to business class

The closest you’ll get to business class with a plush cabin, three bathrooms, class-leading food and wine. I recommend the Thai pepper beef with jasmine rice, with  a glass or two of the Château d’Aiguilhe, Côtes de Castillon 2012, St Emilion.

ANA: best for lounge access

The Japanese carrier is the only one to offer lounge access and drinks from the business-class menu.

Singapore Airlines: best for comfort

The best seats on any carrier, provided you’re on the mammoth, 19-hour trek from Singapore to New York. There are six solo window seats at the back of the Airbus A350-900ULR that it uses for this, the world’s longest flight, with their own storage bins between each seat and the window.

Qantas: best for heading Down Under

The best value and comfort to Australia is premium economy on Qantas’s Boeing 787 direct flight from London to Perth – and soon on direct flights from London and New York to Sydney and Melbourne. After all, who wants to spend up to 20 hours in economy?

Finnair: best value for Asia

With an elegant cabin of only 21 seats on its long-haul Airbus A330s and 24 on its Airbus A350s, Finland’s flag carrier offers a smaller cabin than most carriers and is often better value than BA on routes to Asia, but you will have to change planes in Helsinki.
