Princess cruise dining FAQ

princess cruise indian food

Is food on Princess Cruises included?

Sit-down meals in the main dining room, which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, are always included on a Princess cruise, and the menu varies somewhat daily. Also included is a buffet, either called World Fresh Marketplace or Horizon Court, depending on the ship, as well as fast casual and grab-and-go spots on board that serve pizza, tacos, burgers, pastries and ice cream.

Specialty restaurants including Crown Grill, Princess's steak and seafood house, and Sabatini's, the signature Italian restaurant, require a surcharge that's priced at a flat rate per adult or child; some menu items also require an additional surcharge no matter the age of the guest.

Related: The ultimate guide to Princess Cruises ships and itineraries

Are drinks included on Princess cruise ships?

Select beverages are always included: iced tea, hot tea, brewed coffee, hot chocolate, milk, fruit juice, lemonade and tap water. Everything else, including soft drinks, wine, beer, cocktails, spirits and specialty coffees, must either be purchased a la carte or through one of the cruise line's beverage packages .

Do I need reservations?

Reservations are encouraged for the main dining room and the specialty restaurants, and it's best to make them as early as possible ; walk-in parties will be accommodated on a space-available basis. Guests can make reservations via the Princess MedallionClass app or at guest services once you're on board. If you wish to eat at the same time every night, you can do so by reserving your tables in advance.

Platinum and Elite Captain's Circle members have early access to reservations. Passengers booked in a Full Suite or Reserve Collection Mini-Suite don't need to make dining reservations as they will always be accommodated; they also have access to a dedicated space in the main dining room with expedited seating and an expanded menu.

Does Princess Cruises have an evening dress code?

"Smart casual" attire will be appropriate for the main dining room, buffet and fast-casual restaurants. You might want to pack something dressier for the specialty restaurants or one of the more upscale dining experiences like Chef's Table, 360 or a winemaker dinner.

On sailings that are five nights or longer, there will be one or more formal nights, which do require adhering to a dress code in the dining venues . Cocktail dresses, evening gowns or dressy pantsuits are appropriate for women, while dark suits, tuxedos or dinner jackets and slacks are required for men , along with dressy footwear. If you don't want to dress up or forgot appropriate attire, you're welcome to dine at the buffet or any of the other casual dining options on board during formal night.

Is there assigned seating in the main dining room?

There is currently no assigned seating at any dining venues on board Princess ships; however, that is changing for cruises departing on or after September 14. For those sailings, guests can choose between traditional seating (with assigned dining times, tables, tablemates and waiters in the main dining room) or flexible seating. Within flexible seating, passengers can either make reservations to dine at a specific time on any given night or walk in when they're hungry to access the first available table.

Until September, Princess will not offer assigned seating, and guests can choose to make reservations or not for the main dining room. If you are a solo diner or part of a couple or small group, your host might ask if you would like to sit with another party of a similar size in the main dining room; the choice is up to you.

What if I have dietary restrictions?

You can use the Cruise Personalizer to indicate your dietary preferences, including requests for low-sodium, low-fat, low-sugar and vegetarian diets. Kosher meals and baby food are available with advanced written requests. If you have allergies or medical needs related to food, you must inform Princess in writing — check the line's website for more details. Princess Cruises also recently introduced a series of vegan menus for dinner in the main dining room, including starters, soups, salads, pastas and main dishes.

Where can I get snacks on board?

princess cruise indian food

You'll find lots of spots to grab a quick bite, dessert or coffee, including Coffee & Cones, Patisserie, Swirls Ice Cream Bar, The Pastry Shop, International Cafe and Gelateria — options vary depending on the ship. Food at these venues is included, but there is a charge for specialty coffees and teas unless you have a beverage package.

Is room service included on Princess Cruises?

Guests can use the designated button on their cabin's phone to order room service 24 hours a day; each order incurs a $5 delivery fee, which is waived for those with Princess Plus or Princess Premier status.

You can also use the OceanNow feature in the Princess Medallion Class app to order food to be delivered to your cabin or anywhere else on the ship, like the pool deck. This feature is included with Princess Plus and Princess Premium; otherwise, there is a one-time access fee of $14.99 per person per voyage and a $5 delivery fee per order. Food and beverage surcharges may apply for some items ordered via room service.

Indian Food in Princess MDR?

Cool Cruiser

I think I recall reading that, if requested in advance, an Indian meal could be provided.  I know that we were offered an Indian meal in our Royal Suite on a Celebrity cruise, prepared by our Indian butler, but we reluctantly had to refuse as we expected our suite would smell of spices for the rest of the cruise.

Does any one know if special requests can be made for meals, such as an Indian meal, to be served in a MDR on Princess?

Ask, all they can say is no it can't be done. There's usually an Indian dish in the buffet.

Yes, you can make an off menu request for Indian food in the MDR. Place your order the night before. We asked, "Chef's Choice, with chicken."  We also ordered it spicy and it came to the table so mild a 5 year old could eat it, but was pretty good.

As mentioned, the buffet usually has at least one Indian item.

Thanks

If the occasional Indian dish that appears on the menu in MDR is anything to go by then i wouldn't even bother asking. I can make a better Indian meal than Princess chefs and at least I know what the dishes comprise of which is more than some of the staff.

Yes you can and they will deliver.  Funny story.  I ordered Chicken MARSALA since I don't eat veal.  The smell hit me as soon as the meal was placed on the table and the big bowl of rice was another clue.  The restaurant manager left out the R and I ended up with Chicken MASALA.  Thankfully they were on it right away and the correct meal was prepared and served quickly.

Yes, we usually have an Indian entree each night - speak with your waiter or restaurant manager, let them know your preferences, like how spicy, and you'll have some amazing dishes.

On our Coral Princess cruise last spring our senior server was Indian.  My sister, traveling with us, had spent a summer in India a decade or more ago on a Fulbright program for teachers.  The server was thrilled and asked if we (3 siblings and spouses) would like to try some Indian food.  Why not?  He told us the chef was Indian and would make us something special.

The next night we had a delicious dish and offered our profuse thanks.  Our cruise was 28 days long and and we were brought a special dish to share about every 3rd night (plus an Indian dish was on the menu a couple of times a week) with all the condiments.   Even when we weren't having Indian food he brought the condiments (DH and my BIL loved them the spicier the better).  It was a wonderful and unexpected experience.

Catchum

Cruising out of the UK there is always an Indian option in the always available/ favourites section of the menu.

I ordered Indian vegetarian each night of our 10 day Alaska cruise.  It wasn't great.  I pre-ordered with the head guy in the dining room.  Even though we had the same dining room reservation every night, we never had the same area of the dining room.  They always had to hunt him down to verify I had actually ordered an Indian meal.  The food was good once I got it but it was a hassle and there were only 3 main dishes that kept repeating. We're going on a 16 day Hawaii next month and I won't be ordering Indian food again.  As others have stated, the buffet always has at least one dish and it's very good.  Unfortunately, I never saw an Indian breakfast offered.

I think you'd better off in the buffet, sampling what they have there. I was on Royal in September, and they really upped the Indian game, having dishes themed by Indian region, so I saw and tasted a lot of things I'd never had before on a ship or restaurant. You can try a little of everything and decide if you like something. Usually I either try a few things at the buffet when it opens and eat after 8, or eat in the MDR and do buffet sampling later. The same goes for other lines--NCL and Celebrity have good Indian buffet food, whereas Carnival actually includes Indian vegetarian every night as an MDR option, which I enjoy.

Vegetarian Options on Princess Cruises

by Prof. Cruise · Published June 3, 2019 · Updated May 27, 2021

Vegetarian food

I’ve been a vegetarian for nearly 30 years.  Now I know what you’re thinking, “she can’t be older than 30 and, as such, must have been introduced to a vegetarian diet in utero by a hippy, fru fru mother who raised her on wheat grass and fermented soybeans.  No, that would be my child.

While my dad would become a vegetarian later in life, when I became one he was still surviving on hamburgers and Diet Coke and my mom has never met a food she won’t try.  If you’re wondering, “who ever orders the ox tongue and frog legs,” on a cruise, my mom does!

Naw, I was just an animal loving 12 year old, mildly susceptible to the influence of an older vegetarian cousin.  And while it’s not uncommon for a young woman to declare herself a vegetarian in order to rebel against her father – with an “I Love Animals They’re Delicious” bumper sticker on the diesel truck he uses for hunting and rolling coal – only to answer, “yes please,” to an offer of pot roast a week later during Sunday dinner because it smells, “soooooo good,” I stuck it out.

Due to acute stubbornness, I persist with most things – even those ill-advised such as this mediocre blog.  A blog I will continue to publish long after my one reader (hi mom!) is gone and I’m writing about cruises from 50 years ago both because I can’t remember what I did yesterday and because my nursing home excursions are limited to “scenic drives” to the mall food court.  Although, note to self, I really should review the vegetarian options at the Northgate Mall for similarly situated nonagenarians.

Anyway, I’ve been on 14 cruises across many different lines as a vegetarian, and on a couple where I’ve eaten strictly vegan.  This post will focus on Princess, but I’ll offer a few comparisons to my experiences on other lines and some general tips for eating vegetarian or vegan that I’ve found helpful across lines.

But before we put aside our steak knives in favor of an extra fork for the third dessert we ordered to avoid any accusations of healthfulness, if you clicked on this post just so you could post a joke about vegetarians in the comments, let me save you the trouble.  Because despite rumors to the contrary, we vegetarians do have a sense of humor.

Q: What does a vegetarian zombie eat? A: GRAAAINNNS!!

Q: What did one vegetarian say to the other vegetarian? A: We have to stop meating like this.

Q: Why did the tofu cross the road? A: To prove he wasn’t chicken.

A Reality Check If You’re A Vegetarian Or Vegan Cruising For The First Time

Vegetables

While it’s much easier to eat out as a vegetarian or even vegan now days, especially in urban areas – I can feast on vegan fare mimicking approximately 3,000 different meat preparations from every culture on earth as well as freeze-dried vegan ice cream suitable for space travel within a block of my apartment in downtown Seattle – the cruise industry is still lagging behind in terms of being vegetarian and vegan friendly.

And while I encourage my fellow vegetarians and vegans to continue to advocate for more and better options and fill out comment cards and surveys, as I always do, expressing specific needs and areas for improvement, there are realities that make catering to particular dietary requirements challenging on cruise ships.

princess cruise indian food

It’s hard enough to feed a family of four composed of a weekday vegan, a vegetarian six-year-old limited to one color (orange), an omnivore amateur weight lifter who obsessively counts grams of protein like a teacher tracking his preschoolers on a field trip to the aquarium, “1,2,3,4…OMG Jessica is submerged up to her knees in the middle of the touch pool!” and a dog so elderly he can’t get into the bed unassisted but manages a five foot vertical leap when it’s time for his carnivorous kibble.

Now imagine having to cook for and serve 2-4 thousand cruisers three (or six to eight if they’re Prof. Cruise) vacation-worthy meals a day with limited provisions in tight kitchens and dining rooms swaying and bobbing and sometimes jerking violently about.  With each guest having different standards and tastes and expectations.  It’s a challenge!  And they don’t always get it right, even for those without dietary restrictions.

2) The business of cruising

princess cruise indian food

Don’t forget that cruise lines are giant corporations in the business of maximizing profits for their owners and shareholders.  No corporate Princess employee is tasked with figuring out how they can better my individual cruise experience, they’re looking for ways to fill ships, cut expenses, and separate passengers from more of their dollars.

And because vegetarians, and especially vegans, make up such a small percentage of cruisers, our needs are not a high priority.  Which is not to say that cruise lines don’t make an effort, they do, but they don’t have to be great in order to remain profitable like a small, land-based restaurant does.

3) Language and cultural barriers

Very few cruise ship employees are native English speakers.  This is one of the things I love about cruising – meeting and getting to know people from all over the world.  And, despite now having a Ph.D., I almost didn’t graduate from college due to a pesky language requirement.  So I know firsthand that learning another language as an adult is HARD and I have tremendous respect and admiration for those who work grueling jobs at sea, far away from home, in a second language, in order to provide for their families.

Cruise waiters

But language and cultural differences can make it harder to communicate your questions and needs as a vegetarian or vegan.  A word for “vegetarian” doesn’t even exist in some languages.

My travels to China, where you’re more likely to see chicken feet on a menu than salad, have taught me to be very specific about my dietary needs.  When you tell people who aren’t very familiar with vegetarianism or veganism or may not have even heard those words in English before that you “don’t eat meat” or that you “don’t eat animal products” they may read the title of a menu item that doesn’t sound like it has meat and tell you it’s fine, when it’s actually made with chicken or beef or fish stock or flavored with other meat products.  This has happened to me many times on cruises, especially with soups and sauces.  They aren’t trying to mislead you, they just don’t fully understand what you’re asking.  Which brings me to my top tips for eating vegetarian or vegan on a cruise.

Top Tips For Eating Vegetarian Or Vegan On A Cruise

1) communicate, communicate, communicate.

Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus and vegetarians are from Neptune because it’s “far out” as in “rad” to fellow vegetarians, but “far out” as in furthest away and most alien to non vegetarians. That’s okay, we can still lose our money in the casino together and attend an art auction for the free champagne and gaze out at the water and mistaken every bloody seagull for something more interesting: “I see a whale spout at 4 o’clock! Oh wait, it’s another darn seagull diving for fish.”

And, like a relationship, when it comes to getting your dietary needs met on a cruise, communication is key. And also much harder than a simple platitude would suggest. Here are my tips:

Notify the cruise line in advance of your dietary restrictions.

Princess dietary requests

Don’t expect it to make much of a difference, but do it anyway. Normally there’s a place in your online reservation where you can do this. If you can’t find it, call the cruise line or your travel agent. This will become part of your reservation and will be communicated to the ship. Although know that you will still need to alert and meet with the appropriate ship staff when you board (more on this later). The ship may also stock more soy milk and such if they know in advance there are going to be vegan passengers.

Write it down.

princess cruise indian food

I’ve found it helpful to make a detailed list of ingredients I can’t eat and another list of suitable substitutes and things I enjoy (keep them simple and present them as ideas not requirements) for my initial conversation with the head waiter in the main dining room (this is more relevant for vegans – vegetarians can usually order off the regular menu).

Ask specific questions.

Instead of asking “is this soup vegetarian?” ask “can you tell me what kind of broth this soup is prepared with?” Then you can follow up with, “I’m a vegetarian and don’t eat any meat, chicken, fish or beef/chicken broth.”

2) Be patient

princess cruise indian food

Because you read this post in advance, you know that eating vegetarian or vegan on a cruise ship is going to require a bit of extra effort. Be patient with staff and know they are doing their best to help you. While I haven’t always had my question answered by the first person I asked or have had to wait for a time for a special request, I’ve found cruise ship staff exceedingly gracious, kind, and patient with me . So the least I can do is be patient with them , knowing they are doing the best they can considering the circumstances – most of which are out of their control.

I would use that old adage “you catch more flies with honey than vinegar” here, but vegetarians generally frown upon killing other sentient beings and vegans don’t eat honey. But, you get the picture.

3) Be content

This is not going to be the best food you’ve had. That’s true even for those without diet restrictions. But approach it with an attitude of good enough . And don’t get me wrong, I’ve always found a number of things I’ve LOVED on every cruise I’ve been on. Never have I returned home weighing anything less than 5 pounds over what I weighed at embarkation. #goals

4) Be flexible

princess cruise indian food

Thankfully, if your entree in the main dining room contained olives or rotten grapes (who deceptively go by the name “raisins” to mislead the public), there are other options. Hit the buffet or the International Cafe (on many Princess ships) or grab a veggie burger from the grill. With a little flexibility, no one, no matter how limiting their diet is, should ever go hungry on a cruise!

Now then, let’s move onto vegetarian and vegan dining options specific to Princess cruises.

Eating Vegetarian In The Main Dining Room On Princess

princess cruise indian food

If you’re a vegetarian without any other significant allergies or restrictions, you’ll be fine ordering off the regular dining room menu on Princess. There’s always at least one vegetarian entree and usually several starters. Here are some sample menus from my latest cruise on the Golden Princess to give you a feel for the menus:

The three items above are available every night. The fettuccine alfredo is also available in an appetizer portion which I often order in addition to whatever the vegetarian entree is for that night – I find the portions in the main dining room on the small side. Make sure to save room for 2 or 3 or 1 of each of the desserts though!

Eating Vegan In The Main Dining Room On Princess

princess cruise indian food

Although I have never eaten vegan on Princess, I have on other lines and did speak to the maître d’ about it on my last Princess cruise just to verify that the process is the same.

Upon boarding the ship you’ll need to meet with the maître d’ or head waiter in one of the main dining rooms. It can be confusing to figure out where you need to go and who you need to talk with. My strategy is to find out which dining room is open for lunch on embarkation day, go there, and ask the maître d’ seating guests who you need to speak with about your dietary request. They’ll get you to the correct place and person!

Let this person know what your needs are – again this is when I find a list helpful (although the maître d’ or head waiter probably has some experience with vegan guests). They’ll discuss your dinner choice for that first evening and will explain that after you’ve completed your meal each night, you’ll need to place your order with your waiter for the next night.

When you meet your waiter for dinner each evening (if you have a set dining time you will have the same wait team each night, which makes it easier), let them know that you have a dietary restriction and have already placed your order. They will ask for your room number so they can pull your order. Here are a few tips I’ve found helpful on other lines:

1) Request a set dining time if possible (as opposed to Anytime Dining).

Having the same wait team each night is less of a hassle. After the first night, they’ll know the drill and you won’t have to explain it to a new team each time.

2) Consider requesting a “private” table.

It’s not uncommon on cruise ships to be seated at a table with strangers – commence awkward small talk, “where are you from” and so on. You can, however, request to be seated with just your sailing companions. If you so desire, do this when you speak to the maître d’ or head waiter at embarkation if you have a set dining time or just mention it when you show up for Anytime Dining.

I recommend this because it can sometimes take longer for your special request items to be ready. It can be uncomfortable at a table of people you don’t know and can hold them up if they feel obligated to wait for you.

Also, while I’m generally happy to explain to people why I’m a vegetarian if they ask, sometimes I just want to relax and enjoy my meal without any special attention paid to it. Socializing and meeting new people can be fun too though, so this one is totally up to you – just something to noodle on.

Vegetarian And Vegan Buffet Options On Princess

princess cruise indian food

While I was always the weak spot during games of Red Rover on the playgrounds of my youth due to my twiggy arms and excessively sweaty palms, I find the buffet the weakest spot for vegetarians and vegans on Princess.

The fact that nothing is labeled vegetarian (at least that’s been my experience on three different ships) is extremely frustrating and, indeed baffling. It would be such a simple thing to do. Just slap a “V” next to the name of the dish and fairly assume that most know it means “vegetarian” and that there isn’t a blood feud between the baked potatoes and the mashed potatoes.

Buffet staff would avoid six questions from every vegetarian coming through the line even if it does prompt a few Prof. Cruise inspired dumb jokes that at least don’t require anyone bother the chefs again, “what’s V for, vendetta? You smashed my brother and drowned him in cream and butter!” That last part should be read in the voice of the mafia boss of the baked potatoes.

Some dishes are obviously vegetarian or vegan, but many, many others are mysteries. Especially soups, sauces, and rice dishes which are often made with chicken or beef broth. While I’m always tempted to examine items up close with a magnifying glass while sporting a brown tweed trench coat and a gentleman’s pipe ala Sherlock Holmes just to make a point, this is the time to ask your specific questions of the friendly and helpful, but generally not very well informed buffet staff: “can you tell me what kind of broth this soup is made from? I’m a vegetarian.”

Princess also disappoints when it comes to the quality of vegetarian offerings, especially their international fare which has been a standout for me on certain other lines (I would book NCL solely for the Chinese and Indian food at the buffet).

On a positive note, the buffet desserts on Princess are quite good, so you have the perfect justification to load up your plate with these: “I couldn’t find anything else vegetarian.” Darn.

For more information about the buffet on my most recent Princess sailing, including video footage of breakfast, lunch, and dinner offerings, see my Golden Princess Ship Review here .

*Note for vegans: there is soy milk available at the buffet. Just flag down a drink server and request it.

Vegetarian items at the international cafe on princess.

princess cruise indian food

Try to follow along as I jump from reviling Princess for their international food in one sentence to highlighting my favorite venue on Princess, the “International Cafe” a few verbs and trite adjectives later. While not every Princess ship has the International Cafe, count yourself lucky if you’re booked on one that does. This is one of the reasons I continue to sail on Princess.

Complimentary and open 24 hours, which I personally verified by visiting each hour from sunrise to sunset to sunrise again, under the guise of “research for my blog,” the International Cafe offers some of the best breakfast pastries and desserts on the ship. There’s also a hot, pressed to order breakfast sandwich that can be modified to be vegetarian by requesting it without the bacon (just be sure to ask them to make one fresh in the back, otherwise they’ll just pull the bacon off and you’ll be able to taste it still) and a delicious tomato and mozzarella panini during lunch, dinner, and late night hours. There are also some rotating specials for breakfast and lunch, many of which are vegetarian, as well as salads. For dinner they add a cheese, nut, and dried fruit board which is nice to take back to your room for a late night snack along with a few desserts.

Unfortunately most items are not vegan friendly with the exception of a salad that’s pretty tasty even though I prefer to exhaust all other options before ordering anything green on vacation.

Vegetarian Pizza Available On Princess

There are generally two pizza options on Princess ships, Prego Pizza which serves up giant slices of New York style thin crust on the Lido deck and Alfredo’s Pizza which is a complimentary a sit-down restaurant serving made to order personal pizzas. Not all ships have both, but some do.

Prego Pizza on Princess

Say that one ten times fast: “Prego Pizza on Princess…”

Delicious cheese pizza is always available at Prego’s and there’s a rotating special that’s sometimes vegetarian. Fold it over and speak in an exaggerated Brooklyn accent to get the full effect.

Alfredo’s Pizza

Vegetarian pizza on princess

There’s one vegetarian option on the menu which, as an avocado lover, I always order, but you can also modify items on the menu or customize a pizza to your liking.

Extra Credit Tip: Grab a salad and a dessert (or three) from the International Cafe to eat with your pizza while it’s cooking.

The Veggie Burger At The Trident Grill

princess cruise indian food

A counter burger and dogs joint, the Trident Grill, is located on the Lido deck and offers a veggie burger with or without cheese for vegetarians. Although no one was able to tell me for sure if it’s vegan, I suspect it is as it appears to be comprised mostly of quinoa and carrots and falls to pieces after the first bite suggesting the absence of eggs.

It’s cooked to order and takes longer than a meat burger, but it’s pretty good if you don’t mind eating it with a knife and fork like you’re entirely too proper to be skipping afternoon tea for a BBQ joint.

Room Service Vegetarian And Vegan Options on Princess

Because I’m too lazy to cut and paste and properly cite my own work using APA style, like I implored my students to do every semester for ten years as a college professor before I threw up my hands in surrender and retired to a cruise ship, I’ll just refer you here . Keep scrolling through the loquacious drivel until you see this photo:

But here’s the menu and photos of the vegetarian options if you’re not interested in my continuing hostility toward olives and raisins and have an episode of Teen Mom 2 cued up on your DVR like I do.

Eating Vegetarian At Specialty Restaurants On Princess

princess cruise indian food

I’ve only eaten at one specialty restaurant on a Princess ship. Care to hazard a guess?

If you’re a meat eater, you probably guessed the Sterling Steakhouse and proceeded to tell the following joke:

Q: How many vegetarians does it take to eat a cow? A: One if nobody’s looking.

And you’d be right, except for the part about the cow – I stuck to veggie sides because it was a crowded restaurant with people staring with one part resentment, one part longing, and one part pity at the doe-eyed honeymooning couple (Prof. and Mr. Cruise) talking about how much fun it was going to be to have kids.

As far as that went, I found a phonetically spelled, hand written chart in my six-year-old’s room today titled, “Do I Hayt Mom And Dad Today?” with a row for each day of the week and a columns for yes and no. Last week we were a perfect 7/7…in the yes column. Fun.

Anyway, while the sides were delicious, alone they didn’t seem worth the $29 cover charge I was, however, perfectly willing to pay because I knew what I was getting into in advance. But with no mention of it, they automatically removed the charge from our bill. I don’t know if this is standard practice (I wouldn’t assume – definitely ask), but it was a nice surprise.

And what’s the best thing to do with found money? Head straight to the bar and discuss how cute your kids are going to be, which is exactly what we did! And thank goodness we were right about that one: “at least he’s cute!”

If you’re interested in trying a specialty restaurant, I’ve generally found the Italian ones to be the most vegetarian friendly. Here’s the menu for Sabatini’s on Princess:

Final Thoughts About Eating Vegetarian On Princess

While Princess doesn’t win my award for “best line for vegetarians and vegans,” which goes to Holland America with their extensive separate menu in the main dining room for vegetarians and vegans, there are many reasons I’ll continue to book and enjoy Princess. And while food is entirely subjective and I encourage you to try out several different lines in order to find what works best for you, there is one thing we can all agree on, vegetarians and vegans and omnivores and carnivores alike:

Q: What vegetable do you never want to see on a cruise ship? A: A leek!

And with that…

Class Dismissed.

Please share you experiences cruising as a vegetarian or vegan (or if you have other dietary restrictions) in the comments and don’t forget to check out my full review of the Golden Princess including additional menus, food pics, and video footage of the buffet here .

Princess Cruises Food Review – EVERYTHING I Ate During my Cruise: (Photos and Menus)

If you are taking a Princess cruise you might be wondering what the food will be like. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included at no extra cost on a Princess cruise.

I’ve just disembarked Emerald Princess and in this post we will look at everything I ate in the main dining room, buffet and poolside grill. Menus are also provided.

Buffet – Included

The buffet on the Emerald Princess was open from early in the morning until late at night. The buffet is split into two sides and is relatively small due to the small size of the ship.

Below are some examples of my buffet meals. All of the food in the buffet is free and unlimited.

princess cruises main buffet food

The great thing was that during the changeover times, between breakfast and lunch, or lunch and dinner the buffet didn’t have to close completely because they would close one side and open another.

The buffet at dinner time consisted of:

  • A Carvery Section (Roast Meat etc.)
  • Indian, Chinese or Mexican Dishes

The sections would be different for breakfast and lunch.

Below is a photo of my breakfasts and one of my lunches.

princess cruises buffet food

I loved the number of things that were in small grab-and-go cups, this made it very easy to pick up a snack or to have a small portion of something.

We usually ate breakfast in the buffet and although I am not a big buffet fan, there was lots of choices. I mostly had bread and fruit as seen below.

There were lots of waiters around who would ask if we wanted a drink as soon as we sat down.

princess cruises main buffet food

The buffet was always very clean and the tables were cleaned between each group of guests.

The below photos show my dad’s breakfast (he’s much more into breakfast than me) and my fajita and nacho lunches. These were very yummy!

Main Dining Room – Included

There are multiple main dining rooms onboard the Emerald Princess.

Guests can either choose fixed dining, where you have the same table at the same time each night or flexible dining. We opted for flexible dining and it worked well.

Flexible dining meant that we could book different restaurants and eat at different times.

We did also have the option to table share so if you were cruising solo, this would be a good way to meet other passengers.

princess cruises main dining room food

It wasn’t uncommon to find that there were extras available not on the menu.

Most nights there would be at least two specials, and one of them was usually vegetarian. The majority of the time the specials would be pies or curries.

The below vegetable pie and chips were an off-menu special.

princess cruises main dining room food

There was also an always-available section on the menu, these are called Princess’s favourites and they don’t change.

The dessert menu also has an always-available section. My favourite in this section is the Love Boat Dream, it’s a chocolate brownie/mousse and I had it multiple times during the cruise.

princess cruises main dining room food

A plate of chips/fries wasn’t on the menu but when I ordered the vegetable samosas, our waiter asked me if I could like some chips as the portion was small, I didn’t expect a whole bowl of chips!

If you’d ever like something extra, just ask.

princess cruises main dining room food

Caesar salad was always available as a starter as you’ll find on most cruise lines.

It is possible to order a starter as a main or a main as a starter if you’d prefer.

princess cruises main dining room food

There aren’t any limits on how many courses you can order, so if there are multiple things that take your fancy, order them all!

Many people order a couple of starters and a couple of mains. The waiters are very used to it.

princess cruises main dining room food

The below menu was from Gala night, this is Princess’s formal night of sorts.

Many people do dress up for dinner and there is a dress code that’s in place.

It isn’t as strict as other cruise lines like Cunard, but compared to other American cruise lines like Carnival or Royal Caribbean, it is taken more seriously.

princess cruises dinner menu

We always found that the food was well presented, the portion sizes were good and the food hot. The service was great too.

princess cruises main dining room food

Other Included Food – Pool Side Grill

In addition to the food in the buffet and the main dining room, there was freshly made pizza, burgers and hot dogs served on the pool deck.

The pizza restaurant was called Slice and the poolside grill was called Salty Dog.

princess cruises pool side grill / salty dog

The above might not look like much, but they were very tasty!

My brother said that his poolside burger from salty dog was the best that he’s ever had on a cruise.

I understand how gross the loaded fries (right) look but they were amazing. There was one vegetarian and one meat option.

Sadly there were no meat-free hot dogs available but there was a veggie burger.

To find out more about what is included in a Princess cruise beyond the food, check out this post: Princess Cruises – What is Included? Food, Gratuities and More

Other Included Food – Room Service/Bar Service

Princess cruises have taken room service one step further by letting all guests order from the room service menu to their location, even if they aren’t in their room.

We were able to order sandwiches, desserts, and drinks to our location just using the app.

princess cruise indian food

Realistically the app worked about 50% of the time, but when it did work, it was amazing.

I didn’t order room service on this cruise but have on Princess cruises in the past. Below are a couple of photos from my room service on Sky Princess.

emma cruises room service princess cruise

Other Included Food – International Cafe (Cookies)

In the atrium of Princess cruise ships, there is a cafe called the international cafe. Here they have snacks that are available 24/7.

These are mostly small sandwiches and cakes but they do also have cookies here!

emma cruises cookies princess cruises atrium

The cookies are usually behind the scenes so you have to ask for them, either when you order your drink or you can just walk up to the food area and ask.

We had three different types of cookies on this cruise and they were all fantastic.

Our waiter would often bring us plates of cookies so that we could keep them in our cabin for snacks, it was amazing!

princess cruises cookies international cafe in atrium

Tea and Coffee are served here but these do cost extra.

Tea and Coffee are also available for free in some other places around the ship, to find out where and when, check out this post: Princess Cruises Tea and Coffee Guide – Free and Premium Options

Speciality Restaurants

I didn’t go to any speciality restaurants during this cruise (restaurants that cost extra) but in the past, I have tried almost all of Princess’s speciality restaurants.

Ultimate Guide to Princess Cruises Drinks Prices & Menus

In this post you’ll find the  Princess Cruises drinks menus and prices , correct as of 2022. Is a drinks package worth it? Making a decision about purchasing a drinks package can be difficult, so this post is designed to help you.

I was fortunate to sail on Sky Princess in August 2021 and April 2022. I took photos of the Princess Cruises drinks menus with prices whilst onboard to help you to plan your budget.

Princess Cruises Drinks Guide

On Princess, drinks can be purchased individually or with a drinks package. Princess Cruises drinks packages can be purchased in advance or within the first two days of getting onboard. If you decide to wait until you get onboard, the beverage package price is added to your onboard account and paid at the end of your cruise.

Take a look at my Complete Guide the Princess Cruises Drinks Packages 2022

There are no advantages to waiting until you get on your cruise to buy the drinks package. The price is the same whether you purchase in advance or on embarkation day.

Instead of a beverage package, you may want to consider Princess Plus or Princess Premier. In almost all cases, Princess Plus offers the best value to cruisers as it includes a drinks package along with WiFi and crew gratuities/incentives.

Take a look at my guide to Princess Plus to find out when it might not be the best choice.

Princess Premier is a new package that has been introduced in 2022 so I’d recommend taking a look at my breakdown of what’s included in the Princess Premier Package to see if it’s worth it.

This Princess Cruises drinks guide provides you with the individual prices, sourced from bar menus onboard. Although these prices are from Sky Princess, the prices seem to be the same across all Princess Cruises’ ships.

The Plus Beverage Package includes all drinks up to $12, the Premier Beverage Package includes all drinks up to $18. all alcoholic drinks by the glass
If you choose a drink that is greater than the beverage package limit, you must pay the individual drink’s price in full (new change to package rules).

Beer on Princess Cruises

There’s only one non-alcoholic lager available – Heineken 0.0 at $5.50.

Princess Cruises Drinks Menu: Ciders

There are only two ciders available on Princess ships. There are no berry fruit ciders at present on any of the menus.

White Wine List on Princess Cruises

Most of the wine on Princess Cruises can be purchased from the bars by the glass or by the bottle. If you have the Plus or Premier Beverage Packages, wine by the glass is included but you can only get a 25% discount when buying a bottle.

Princess Cruises Drinks Menu: Red Wine List

The best place to enjoy wine on Princess ships is at Vines Wine Bar, usually located on Deck 5 of the Piazza. Here you have access to wines you cannot find anywhere else on the ship.

Red wine prices range from $9 to $21 per glass.

Princess Wine List: Rose Wine

Wine flights from vines wine bar.

If you like to taste a range of different wines, wine flights are available from Vines Wine Bar in the Piazza. Wine flights are not part of the exclusions from the beverage packages are therefore are included in the Plus Package (up to $12) and Premier Package (up to $18).

The Norman Love Wine Flight pairs wine with chocolate for those who love both!

Champagne and Sparkling Wines

Champagne Cocktails

In certain bars you will be able to order Champagne cocktails. It’s more likely the inside bars will do these such as Take Five, Bellini’s and Vines.

Remember, the Plus Beverage Package covers drinks up to $12 and the Premier Beverage Package covers drinks up to $18.

If you choose the Plus or Premier Beverage Package you have a 25% discount on 1 litre bottles of natural spring water.

Coffee and Tea Prices on Princess Cruises

The biggest selection of coffee and tea can be found at the International Cafe in the Piazza. There is a small choice of coffee and tea in the buffet.

These can be ordered in small or large sizes.

Final Thoughts on Princess Cruises Drinks

These  Princess Cruises drinks menus and prices , will hopefully give you a useful way to calculate whether a drinks package is needed.

The majority of the drinks are covered in the Plus Beverage Package and the cheapest option is purchase the Princess Plus add-on package , which includes drinks up to $12, unlimited WiFi and crew appreciation (tips) for $50 / £40 per person per day.

If you don’t plan to drink more than 5 or 6 alcoholic drinks a day you may be better off paying for drinks individually – it all depends on what you like to drink.

Princess Cruises Chef’s Table celebrates classic culinary elegance

By cristine struble | jun 3, 2024.

Princess Cruises Chef's Table on board Caribbean Princess, appetizers

While the cruise brand’s commercials might say welcome aboard to love, Princess Cruises Chef’s Table has guests swooning over the sophisticated dining experience. For those craving culinary elegance, this specialty dinner is a highly coveted reservation.

The food and beverages on board a Princess Cruises ship focus on classics. While other cruise brands might celebrate smoke bubble cocktails or globally inspired food courts, the Rudi Sodamin curated culinary menus appreciate the splendor and glamour that a classic cruise experience has always been, impeccable food with a sense of flare.

Beyond the special restaurants and main dining room options, one Princess Cruises dining experience might be the most coveted reservation on board. Often held just once during an itinerary, the specialty Chef’s Table is an intimate dinner that food travelers covet.

Anyone who has seen a small group of guests parading through the restaurant with those white jackets might wonder about the secret that is about to be revealed. Beyond the door to the galley, a culinary delight awaits, and everyone will leave fully impressed.

For those unfamiliar with the Chef’s Table, the culinary experience is a special request. Once on board, guests should speak with the concierge about booking the reservation. Space is quite limited. Given the complexity of the food experience, it is rarely held on a sea day. Also, the reservation does require an additional cost, which is more than any other specialty restaurant.

Princess Cruises Chef's Table, Caribbean Princess

To be honest, this specialty dining experience is not for everyone. Guests who have an appreciation for an impeccable dinner with elevated ingredients and intricate plating will enjoy this event. For people who rarely venture away from a burger and fries or prefer plain noodles, their time might be better spent elsewhere.

After stepping into the galley, a stunning table awaits. Adorned with dazzling chocolate art and sophisticated ice sculptures, guests appreciate connection between food and art. Even though the bustling galley pushes to complete service, guests bask in that small enclave as the Executive Chef explains the appetizers and champagne pairing. From the first bite to the last crumb, the palate awakens for the delicious journey ahead.

Chocolate sculpture Chef's Table Princess Cruises

While each multi-course tasting dinner will be different, the food and wine experience is rooted in classic cuisine. Before the fork hits the plate, it is the visual that is almost unbelievable. For example, the succulent salmon perched on what looks like an ice cube is a crunchy cracker that tricks the eye.

Followed by the opulent foie gras with brioche transitioning to satisfying soup with briny oyster, the courses offer another chapter in this food story. Each dish adds another layer while still standing on its own.

Salmon presented with caviar on edible ice

Even as the mid-dinner sorbet cleanses the palate, a simple concept turns into a special experience. The balance of presentation with thoughtful food progression showcases the attention to detail at every turn.

As the dinner heads into its sweet ending, the dessert course showcases the pastry chef’s mastery. The lemon perched on the plate is almost too pretty to break open to reveal the luscious, creamy center. With a few truffles to enjoy with that last sip of wine, the evening is one that flavors precious memories for years to come.

Princess Cruises Chef's Table

While there is always a place for Crown Grill and main dining options, the Chef's Table is a taste of opulence that is unlike any other dining experience on board. It is a reminder that precision, elegance, and culinary creativity should always be celebrated.

Princess Cruises Chef’s Table experience can be booked onboard. Check with dining services or the concierge for more information.
