Aegean Sea Cruises

Premium cruises to the aegean sea.

On an Aegean Sea cruise, you’ll discover intriguing islands rich in history that have enchanted travelers for centuries. This is where you can immerse yourself in ancient mythology, feast on fresh Mediterranean cuisine, and relax on powder-white beaches or, in some cases, sparkling black sand.

Explore Minoan antiquities with an archaeologist, learn to cook authentic Greek cuisine, or kayak across limpid lagoons. From the towering volcanic cliffs of Santorini to the mountains of Crete and the sandy beaches of Mykonos, a European cruise through the Aegean Sea is the best way to experience this captivating corner of the continent.

Aegean Sea Cruise Highlights

Gorgeous beaches.

The entire Aegean region is blessed with beautiful beaches, all of them different. Elafonisi on Crete is a perfect swathe of pink sand. On Santorini, you’ll see sparkling black beaches, as well as the startling Red Beach at the base of towering, russet-colored cliffs. Mykonos is famous for its lively beach scene, with DJs spinning tunes all day. Head for anything-goes Paradise Beach, or the more sedate, family-friendly Kalafatis, where there’s great windsurfing.

Ancient History

You’ll be immersed in history spanning thousands of years on a cruise in the Aegean Sea. Kusadasi in Turkey is the gateway to ancient Ephesus, which dates back to the 10th century BC. From Mykonos, take a day trip to dreamy Delos, a thriving port in the 7th century BC, where wildflowers bloom in between ancient columns and mosaics. Rhodes’ claim to fame, meanwhile, is the magnificent palaces of the medieval old town, built by the Knights of St. John.

Delicious Food

The Aegean is characterized by its fresh, healthy food. Stuffed vine leaves, hummus and tzatziki dips, juicy tomato salads topped with salty feta and extra virgin olive oil, and fish straight from the boat are typical lunches in the islands, best enjoyed in a waterfront taverna. You’ll also find tender, slow-cooked meat, rich with local herbs, and the freshest fruit, from plump peaches to sweet figs. Greece is known for its fine wines, too; Santorini is one of the best places to taste and buy.

Featured Aegean Sea Cruise Ports

Santorini’s whitewashed towns spill over the cliffs of an ancient caldera that plunges into the glittering sapphire Aegean. Visit the archaeological site of Akrotiri to learn about the sophisticated Minoans who thrived here and then fled before the volcano exploded 3,600 years ago. Dine in a clifftop restaurant in pretty Oia, famed for its blue-domed churches, and visit some of the island’s renowned wine cellars. Or savor the unusual experience of swimming off a sparkling, black sand beach.

Chania (Souda)

Chania’s Venetian Harbor, lined with old mansions in warm, glowing colors and inviting tavernas, fishing boats bobbing on the water, is a joy to explore. There’s beautiful countryside beyond this enchanting town, too. Join a tour through the rugged White Mountains to see how shepherds live and to taste authentic Cretan cuisine. Or lace up your hiking boots for a testing trek through the dramatic Samaria Gorge, one of the most spectacular walks in the whole Aegean region.

There’s more to pretty Mykonos than its famed beach clubs. Visit the neighboring island of Delos to admire mosaics, statues, and columns dating back 2,500 years. Head into the countryside for a cooking class, and feast on your creations of spinach pie, stuffed peppers, and garlicky tzatziki. Or while away an afternoon in Little Venice, where bars and restaurants in former fishermen’s houses sit right on the water, with views of the iconic windmills.

Aegean Sea Cruise Itineraries

There’s a wide choice of itineraries that explore the Aegean Sea, ranging from six to 12 nights and visiting ports on the Greek mainland as well as the islands. You can choose between many different routes that visit Greece, Turkey, Malta, Italy, and beyond. Longer voyages cross the whole region, sailing between Athens and Barcelona over 10 nights, visiting ports in Italy and Spain as well as the Greek Islands. There are also chances to sail from the Aegean to the Adriatic, combining Greek ports with medieval Dubrovnik in Croatia.

Itineraries

Why cruise to the aegean sea with celebrity cruises.

You’ll see the best of the Aegean on our sleek, contemporary ships, with a wide range of excursions on offer catering to every taste. Wander around ancient temples learning about mythology, hike mountain gorges, or bask on sunny beaches.

After exciting days in port, you’ll return to a world of comfort, where exciting dining and contemporary entertainment await. Sip a cocktail at the Martini Bar, or watch daylight fade to dusk at the Sunset Bar. Treat yourself at the spa, and unwind by the pool. Elevate your experience with The Retreat® , which includes a stay in one of our  beautiful suites along with access to an exclusive restaurant, Luminae at The Retreat, a private lounge, and more.

On Edge-series ships, enjoy specialties from the Aegean and Mediterranean in Cyprus, our Greek-inspired restaurant. Solstice-series ships feature the Lawn Club, where you can lie on the soft grass and gaze at the glittering blue Aegean. On Celebrity Infinity, meanwhile, enjoy made-to-order grill dishes and salads in the sunshine at the Mast Grill, and romantic cocktails at the al fresco Sunset Bar.

Aegean Escape 2024

The Aegean Sea is known for its unique, intoxicating blue colour. Myth has it that it took its name from Aegeus, king of Athens and father of Theseus, who threw himself in the sea and drowned thinking his son was dead.

Bathed in brilliant light, and home to thousands of stunning islands, it has been the source of inspiration for many poets, writers, painters and photographers alike.

Embark on a journey that takes you around the Cyclades, to the famous Santorini and Milos islands, but most importantly to lesser known islands, untouched, unspoiled and breathtakingly beautiful. White-washed architecture in a striking antithesis with the Aegean blue, dazzling beaches and hidden coves, sea caves, volcanoes, isolated chapels, ancient ruins and a rich tapestry of Greek traditions await.

An indulgent journey of discovery that is filled with light, joy, myths, dreams and carefree moments.

Combine journeys for a fully immersive experience of Greece.

SEE WHAT YOUR JOURNEY INCLUDES

Active components such as hiking, bicycling and walking longer distances may be included, and hills and/or uneven terrain may be encountered on several days. Guests should be able to walk two to three miles and stand for long periods of time with no difficulty.

Moderately paced, and may include some early morning hotel departures, one or two on-tour flights, and extended motor coach travel.

Cultural journeys and expeditions

Step back in time to ancient Greece and sail to fabulous destinations steeped in legend, lore and sunshine and enjoy lovely sunsets over the Aegean Sea as our cruise blends ancient with modern in a kaleidoscope of discoveries both mythic and epic...

See for yourself what small ship cruising is all about, tauck exclusive – library of celsus dinner, an exclusive special dinner with chamber music at ephesus' library of celsus.

Although the ancient city of Ephesus, in what is now Turkey, was originally built by the Greeks in the 10th century AD, much of the ruins you'll see at the site today date to the city's Roman period – like the famed Library of Celsus, constructed in the 2nd century AD to memorialize a Roman governor of Asia. Only the facade of this remarkable building has survived, but restored and re-erected, it is a stunning example of Roman urban architecture... and the amazing nighttime setting for a Tauck Exclusive, al fresco dinner featuring a chamber music orchestra performance.

Hotel Grande Bretagne

Eternal elegance in athens' ancient heart.

Situated right in the heart of Athens since 1874, the five-star, landmark Hotel Grande Bretagne offers an unrivalled perspective of the Greek capital's mythical history, with breathtaking views of the fabled Acropolis, regal Syntagma Square and the Parliament, lush Lycabettus Hill or the original Olympic Stadium. A favorite of celebrities and dignitaries for more than 140 years, this historic hotel is also within walking distance of exclusive shopping areas, museums and the business district.

From beginning to end, a fabulous vacation and a wonderful experience. The organization, itinerary and ship was superb.

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally , you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey for entry into Greece and Turkey. Although Turkey usually requires foreign visitors to obtain a visa in order to enter the country, Tauck guests traveling aboard a ship are part of a validated escorted shore excursion and are thus not required to obtain an individual Turkish visa (regardless of their citizenship). You do not need a visa for Greece.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally , you should contact a consulate or embassy of Greece to determine what travel documentation is required.

International maritime security guidelines require that your passport information be provided to us prior to your embarkation. You need to provide this information to us as soon as you book your cruise or boarding may be denied. Once you board the cruise ship, your passport will be held by the purser until you disembark.

You will be issued a boarding card, which you must present before embarking the ship in each port. This security measure also ensures that only Tauck guests are permitted onboard.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Special Luggage Restrictions for this Tour

Due to space constraints aboard the Windstar vessel and on motor coaches in Greece and Turkey, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to one small carry-on, no larger than an average size knapsack, which will easily fit under your seat, as overhead racks are not wide enough to accommodate large bags.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies .

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

A doctor and limited medical facilities are available onboard. However, if you take special medications, please bring an adequate supply with you; they may not be available onboard. Medical services and all medicines (except acetaminophen, aspirin and anti-nausea pills) dispensed to you by the ship's doctor will be charged to your shipboard account. If you become ill during the voyage and the physician is unable to care for your needs onboard, you will be transferred to medical facilities onshore.

The Windstar cruise ships are registered in the Bahamas. Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Some of the countries visited on this itinerary may require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against certain diseases in order to enter the country.  These requirements are subject to frequent change as outbreaks occur and subside in different areas, and it is therefore crucial that you obtain the very latest information on entry requirements as you prepare for your journey.

For the most current information, please consult the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) by clicking here  and the World Health Organization (WHO) by clicking here . You may also wish to visit the web sites for the embassies of the countries you will be visiting.  Besides providing details on vaccination requirements, these sites can also provide information on vaccinations that may be recommended (but aren't required) and other potential health issues for which no vaccines are available.

Any decisions relating to your health, of course, should not be based solely on information provided by a web site.  It is critically important that you consult with your personal physician prior to your journey to obtain any required vaccinations and to review any optional recommendations offered by the CDC or other sources.

Please be sure to discuss your journey with your physician at least four to six weeks in advance of your departure, as certain vaccinations take time to become fully effective.  Also, be certain to ask your physician for proof of any vaccinations you receive, and to pack this proof along with your other travel documents in your carry-on luggage (not in your checked luggage).

Researching and complying with vaccination entry requirements for the countries visited on this itinerary is the responsibility of the traveler and not Tauck. Tauck is therefore not responsible for any expenses incurred or disruptions to travel caused by improper or incomplete vaccinations, or by the failure to provide proof of required vaccinations.

If you do not obtain the necessary vaccinations and proper documentation, you may be denied entry into one or more countries, or temporarily quarantined until the necessary vaccinations are administered, or until proper documentation is provided.

To enjoy this cruise, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot.  Many of the sites visited were built in antiquity and have many steps and uneven surfaces. It is important that you wear sturdy, comfortable walking shoes that have already been broken-in. The amount of walking that you choose to do, however, is at your discretion. Additionally, you should be steady on your feet to circumnavigate the decks of the ship while cruising on the Aegean Sea. Some ship-to-shore transportation is by local tender.  Occasionally you may get wet with spray.

PLEASE NOTE:  We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest.  Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

Your Windstar vessel does not have elevators.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

Smoking is not permitted on the motor coaches or inside the ship, including inside staterooms. Smoking is only permitted on the outer decks in the designated smoking areas. These regulations pertain to e-cigarettes as well.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey! You can view the reading list  here .

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with Necessary Gear who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering.  Most days are spent outside or in transit. Therefore, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Breezy days at sea and cool evenings will require warmer, layered clothing. A jacket and tie are not required for gentlemen aboard ship, but may be preferred or required at some local restaurants.

The "casual elegance" of a small cruise ship is also reflected in the way their guests' dress. We recommend that you wear relaxed and comfortable clothing, as you would at an elegant land resort. For women's daytime wear, we suggest walking shorts, skirts, sarongs, lightweight tops and cover-ups; for evening wear - sun dresses, pants, or informal cocktail attire. For men's daytime wear, we suggest Bermuda shorts, polo shirts, and khaki pants; in the evening - lightweight trousers and short-sleeved dress or polo shirts. No suits or ties are required. Shorts, jeans, and t-shirts are not permitted in the restaurant during the evening.

Valet laundry service is available at the hotel listed on this itinerary. On board the ship, next-day laundry and pressing service is available; dry cleaning services, irons and ironing boards are not available.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for cruising on the Aegean Sea:

Rainwear, such as a raincoat and rain hat, plus a collapsible umbrella

Short and long-sleeved shirts/tee shirts (for the warmer, summer months extra tee shirts are always a good idea)

Shorts (for summer) and pants for casual daytime wear

Sport coat for men (suggested but not required) and slacks/dress for women for evening wear

Sweater; lightweight for summer, and medium weight for spring/fall

Camera, lenses, chargers, batteries and extra memory cards

Sunscreen and hat

Small flashlight

Insect repellent

Washcloth - not all European hotels provide washcloths, so you may want to bring one along.   A package of pre-moistened towlettes is an excellent alternative.

Travel alarm clock (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)

Reusable zipper lock bags or other waterproof bags

Prescription medicines (an adequate supply to last your entire journey), and written copies of your prescriptions from your doctor.  While it may be possible to refill prescriptions during your journey, the availability of refills cannot be guaranteed.  What's more, refilling prescriptions in foreign countries can be difficult and time-consuming.

The Mediterranean and Aegean coasts of Greece and Turkey enjoy long hot dry summers and mild winters. Summer temperatures in Greece and Turkey are tempered by the Etesian northerly wind which blows across the Aegean Sea, and breezes called "meltemia", however, mainland temperatures are often very high. Winters are mild and wet, although rainfall is generally low in most areas.

Scenic view of traditional cycladic houses with flowers in foreground, Oia village, Santorini, ... [+] Greece

It’s golden hour in Oia and dozens of boats are parked and bobbing in the Aegean Sea, pointing their bows towards the sun, a glowing orange globe that looks as though it’s gently dipping into the sapphire water for the nightly summer spectacle: A Santorini sunset. Above, amid the blue domes crowning whitewashed buildings, tourists are lined up to catch the sunset, too—with tour guides arriving hours earlier, leading the masses to lookout points and filling up lots that advertise parking for sunset views.

Landscape view of Oia at sunset in Santorini, Greece.

Like a secret stratosphere in between the sea and the famed cliffside village is the Santo Collection Resort and Villa’s quiet sunset outpost with primo views of the Aperol-hued sunset and plenty of rocky ledges to perch yourself onto for unobstructed photos. Competing with views of the sunset is the sunlit volcanic cliff face that’s glowing an earthy shade of red. Just down the path is another option for view seekers: An open-air gym for fitness enthusiasts who want to take in the sunset while working up a sweat on the sea-facing treadmill.

Santorini, particularly Oia, is wildly popular in the summer, with as many as four cruise ships docking in a single day at the volcanic island. (Pro tip: You can check the cruise schedule to see how many passengers will descend on the caldera each day and plan your outings accordingly).

But serenity in Santorini is certainly achievable. Here’s how to build out an Oia, Santorini trip without the crowds this summer.

When is the Best Time to Visit Santorini?

Best high-yield savings accounts of 2024, best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

Amoudi bay, port of Oia, Santorini Greece at sunny summer, toned

Book a trip later in the season, with cooler temps and fewer crowds in late-September through October. Most of the island’s shops, restaurants, and hotels are still open, and you’ve got a better shot at getting a portrait in front of the blue domes or Ammoudi Bay.

Greece, by the way, was just named one of the friendliest countries in the world .

Where to Stay in Oia, Santorini?

Ahead of the summer season, 37 Santo Mine suites opened with pools and jacuzzis facing the Aegean ... [+] Sea.

The Santo Collection opened two new properties for the 2024 travel season and, even when all of the rooms are booked out, the property grounds, pools, and restaurants are spacious enough that they never feel too crowded. Guests will get a calisthenics workout in at this cliffside hotel while making their way to breakfast, where they’ll find decadent spreads of Greek delicacies each morning, like sesame-covered Koulouri (think: thin, chewy bagels), creamy hummus, hunks of feta, Greek yogurt with honey, and more.

The property also has a sleek Wine Cellar where oenophiles can get a taste of Santorini wines that are made all the more interesting by the island’s volcanic soil, like Kavalieros, a dry white with notes of lemon and some interesting minerality. At Ālme Restaurant, dinner guests can sample menu items from the dry-aged fish menu, with ingredients sourced from around Greece. A cove in the resort is set aside for silent movie nights.

Wine Cellar

Blending minimalism and brutalist design concepts, each of the 37 luxury Santo Mine Oia Suites come with either a private jacuzzis or a pool. The suites, which opened this spring, face the Aegean Sea and are topped with “green roofs” growing herbs and sprouting flowers so suite vacationers feel like they have the place to themselves. Interiors are filled with cream tones and accented with woods, stone, and marble.

Also new for summer 2024 are The Villas by Santo Collection . The four-bedroom luxury villas feature private pools and guests can arrange to have local produce stocked in their kitchens, enjoy a private sommelier-led wine tasting, book aqua yoga sessions, or arrange for a private yacht excursion.

The Villas by Santo Collection

The property is a 15-minute walk from Oia’s popular shops and restaurants, and the Ammoudi Bay is an easy descent (but a much harder ascent).

What to Do in Santorini?

Some must-do’s while on Oia include wandering around the winding, cobblestone streets and popping into the art galleries in caves or the ceramic shops filled with hues of blue. Snag a sunset reservation at Ammoudi’s Fish Tavern , a tiered restaurant nesting in the cliffside and overlooking the Ammoudi Bay —a fishing port that’s 300 steps below the town of Oia and is a popular postcard vignette for Santorini.

Want to swim in the Aegean Sea? Santorini is short on beaches, so your best bet is to book a catamaran tour to take you around to the scenic swimming holes and scenic spots, like Nea Kameni, a petite volcanic island where you can swim in the hot springs, which, truthfully, are just a few degrees warmer than other spots.

Another way to see Santorini without the crowds? Book a private car that can take you to some of the scenic spots before cruise ship travelers arrive, spots like Imerovigli, a picturesque clifftop village where you won’t have to jockey for a position to snap photographs.

The Alternative to Huge Cruises? 3 Masts, 28 Sails and Wind Power.

We checked out the 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit on a Mediterranean cruise. In this era of gargantuan ships, its elegant clipper design, wooden decks and relatively small size stands out.

By Ceylan Yeğinsu

From the bridge of the three-masted windjammer, the Sea Cloud Spirit , the captain called out the words we’d all been waiting for.

“Let’s set the sails!” he cried, after turning off the engines, while maneuvering to maintain an optimum angle for his 18 deckhands to climb into the shrouds and unfurl the ship’s 44,132 square feet of sails by hand.

Like acrobats, the crew scurried up the masts to the upper topgallant sails that rose nearly 200 feet above us. The ship’s captain, Vukota Stojanovic, later insisted that none of it was for show. “Whenever there is an opportunity to sail, we sail,” he said.

For the next hour, the crew hauled the ropes until the 28 sails were billowing in the wind, propelling the 452-foot-long ship — the world’s largest passenger sailing vessel on which the sails are raised by hand — toward its first port of call, Portofino, Italy.

At a time when cruise lines are packing their ever-more-gargantuan ships with water parks and basketball courts, the 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit, with its old-fashioned clipper design and wooden decks, stands out. It is the newest ship from the Hamburg-based Sea Cloud Cruises , and while it is the company’s biggest, Sea Cloud said it wanted to leave space for passengers to connect to the surrounding elements.

“Wherever you are on the ship, it feels like you are sitting on the water,” said Amelia Dominick, 71, a retired real estate agent from Cologne, Germany, who was on her third cruise onboard the Sea Cloud Spirit.

I had arrived for a four-night “taster sailing” from Nice, France, to the Ligurian region of Italy, designed to entice passengers to sign up for a longer cruise. Here’s what I found.

The ship and cabins

The Spirit has many comforts and luxuries, including a fitness center, library, hair salon and a spa with a Finnish sauna that overlooks the sea. The deck layouts are spacious, with nooks carved out for privacy and relaxation.

Sixty-nine spacious cabins have windows that open onto the sea. My room, a junior suite on the third deck, had two large arched windows, mahogany tables, a balcony and a comfortable couch and armchair. The marble bathroom was lavish, with a gold-plated sink and large jetted bathtub.

The elegant interior design is inspired by the original Sea Cloud, built in 1931 for Marjorie Merriweather Post, the American heiress of the General Foods Corporation, with glossy wooden panels and gold trimmings. The Sea Cloud was the largest private sailing yacht in the world before Post handed it over to the U.S. Navy for use as a weather-reporting vessel during World War II. The four-mast, 64-passenger ship has since been restored to its former glory and will sail across the Aegean and Adriatic this summer.

The experience felt authentic — even before the sails were set — with a detailed safety drill. On most cruises, the drill entails a safety video and signing in at an assembly point. But here, passengers put on their life jackets and walked through emergency scenarios that included rationing food supplies and fishing from the lifeboat.

Each day, the sails were set, even during heavy rain and wind speeds over 30 knots. Guests wanting to participate in the rigging are usually invited to do so, but the weather conditions made it too risky for this sailing.

“It was amazing to watch the work go into putting the sails up and down and to experience the wind power pulling the ship so fast without the engines,” said Malte Rahnenfuehrer, a 50-year-old psychologist from Zurich, who was traveling with his partner and two children.

A man with dark hair wears navy blue and white clothing as the captain of a large windjammer sailing vessel. He stands on deck, a walkie-talkie-like device in his hand, beneath the ropes and riggings of the vessel's sails.

The captain

It is rare for cruise passengers to see the ship’s captain after the initial welcome drinks or gala dinner. But Capt. Vukota Stojanovic was omnipresent throughout the cruise, from setting sails to lifeguarding to mingling with guests.

Originally from Montenegro, Captain Stojanovic piloted container ships for years. When he was asked to consider helming the original Sea Cloud nearly 10 years ago, he hesitated because he had no experience sailing. Even after he learned the ropes — and there are 340 ropes (known as running rigging) on the vessel — he was unsure. “I grew to love the sailings, the boats, the crew the lifestyle, but I still felt I belonged on container ships,” he said. “It would be a big adjustment, especially because I would have to shave every day,” he joked.

Eventually, he accepted the opportunity and worked tirelessly to learn how to sail and operate the ship. Today, he keeps an “open bridge” policy, allowing passengers to visit the control room, even when he is wrestling with the wind.

“The crew and the passengers are all part of the experience, and I like to meet people and receive their feedback,” Captain Stojanovic said.

Environment

Sea Cloud Cruises aspires to take a “gentle” approach, using wind power to drive its ships wherever possible, even if that means changing course for optimal weather conditions. When sailing is not possible, the Spirit has two diesel-electric engines that run on low-sulfur marine diesel fuel. The company is also working with ports that have shore power capabilities to plug into the local electric power.

Onboard, there is an emphasis on reusable bottles and paper straws, and crew members separate solid waste to be compacted and removed when in port.

Excursions and Activities

We made stops in Portofino, San Remo, Italy, and St.-Tropez, France, anchoring offshore and getting to land by tender — a contrast to the big cruise ships with their loud horns and thick plumes of exhaust spewing from their funnels.

For passengers wanting to take a dip (there is no pool), the crew marked an area in the water with floats and an inflatable slide. The water was frigid, but many passengers took the plunge from the swimming deck. Guests could also take “Zodiac Safaris” around the ship to get views of the vessel from the water.

Excursions ranged from food and wine tours to e-biking and beach trips. In Portofino, passengers were free to explore the sights independently, including the Castello Brown Fortress and the lighthouse on Punta del Capo rock. There was ample time to eat meals on shore as the ship did not depart until 11 p.m. Over the summer, the Sea Cloud Spirit will sail to Spain, Portugal, France and the Azores, among other destinations. On Nov. 11, she will depart for St. Maarten in the Caribbean for the winter.

Wherever the vessel goes, said Mirell Reyes, president of Sea Cloud Cruise for North America, the company tries to “stay away from the crowds and ports where big cruise ships spit out 6,000 passengers.”

Summer prices, which include food and beverages, range from $3,995 for a four-night sailing in a superior cabin to $9,420 for a veranda suite. Seven-night sailings cost between $6,995 and $16,495.

3 Cruise Stocks to Buy on the Dip: June 2024

W hether you love it or hate it, setting sail on a cruise is undeniably a favorite vacation option for many travelers. Cruise stocks are equally polarizing and, like many travel stocks , tend to be better trades than long-term investments. However, as data points show that consumer spending is slowing down, is this a time to look for cruise stocks to buy on the dip?

Something for you to keep in mind as you make that decision is that cruises are often booked several months in advance. That means the vacation pictures you may see on social media in the months to represent sunken costs that may bear little reality to the current economic news. And the cruise lines cite solid booking levels well into 2025.

With that in mind, many cruise lines will likely post strong numbers independent of what happens in the broader economy. Here are three cruise stocks to buy on the dip.

Carnival (CCL)

Carnival (NYSE: CCL ) is getting a lot of attention as one of the cruise stocks to buy on the dip. High expectations are being placed on its June 25, 2024 earnings report. Investors will be looking to see if the company can keep reporting revenue that is not only higher year over year but also higher than 2019 levels.

Investors need to see that because Carnival took on perhaps the highest debt burdens of the cruise lines. Companies do not like to be leading in that category, particularly in the travel industry.

That debt is still likely to weigh on earnings for some time. However, the company reported a record level of bookings at considerably higher prices, which is one reason the company was able to pay down approximately $8 billion of debt during the quarter.

That’s the kind of progress that has analysts bullish on CCL stock . The consensus price target of $20.99 is 30% higher than the June 21, 2024 closing price.

Viking Holdings (VIK)

One investment strategy is not to fight what the market clearly gives you. To amplify this, I present Viking Holdings (NYSE: VIK ). This is a newcomer to the market; it’s only been publicly trading since May 1, 2024, and is already up about 20%. However, the stock has dropped about 10% in the five days of trading ending June 21, 2024.

Viking’s business model caters to the affluent and childless travelers who want to make the destination and not the ship the primary reason for traveling. Cruise ships don’t permit passengers under 18 and don’t have onboard casinos. The company’s target audience is over 55 years of age.

It’s not for everyone. And if you call this a cynical play on a bifurcated economy, I won’t debate it much. However, this demographic is least impacted by inflation today and will likely have disposable income to partake of the “modern luxury” Viking offers.

The current valuation is high . But with only one earnings report, it’s too early to make any long-term judgments on VIK stock.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH)

Demographics are also a reason to look at Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NYSE: NLCH ) as one of the cruise stocks to buy on the dip. NLCH stock is down about 13% in 2024, but analysts have a consensus Buy rating on the stock with an upside of about 20%.

Like Viking, Norwegian has its share of high-net-worth cruisers. However, the company is also capturing another coveted demographic. According to Norwegian Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Harry Sommer, millennial and Gen-Z consumers are the fastest-growing segment of the company’s business. That’s particularly important because, unlike Carnival, Norwegian is not a budget-friendly option.

That does raise questions about how much a weaker consumer will impact the company. In its most recent earnings report, the company had a slight revenue miss but still came in much higher on a year-over-year basis. As the company adds capacity to its new fleet, it expects to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of around 6% through 2028.
