Bad GEM Module - Symptoms, Causes, and Fixes

A GEM (Generic Electronic Module) is a microprocessor-based module in a vehicle that controls various electronic systems and functions, such as power windows, automatic headlights, and the anti-theft system.

The GEM module is essentially the brain of a vehicle’s electrical system. It communicates with other systems within the vehicle to control different features and functions.

These can include, but are not limited to, the windshield wipers, interior lights, door locks, and even the four-wheel drive system on some vehicles.

The GEM module can monitor inputs from switches, sensors, and other modules, and use this information to control outputs to relays, motors, or other components.

When a GEM module malfunctions, it can cause a range of problems, from minor annoyances like automatic windows not working, to more serious issues like the vehicle failing to start.

If there are suspected problems with the GEM module, it is often diagnosed and repaired by a professional mechanic or auto electrician.

Common Symptoms of a Bad GEM Module

2001 ford excursion gem module

Common symptoms of a bad GEM module often manifest as electrical malfunctions within the vehicle, such as issues with power windows, locks, and lights, or the vehicle failing to start.

One common symptom of a bad GEM module is problems with power windows and locks. The GEM module controls these features in many vehicles, so if they’re not working properly – for example, they don’t respond at all, or they operate intermittently – it could be due to a faulty GEM module.

Another symptom can be issues with the vehicle’s lighting. This could include headlights that don’t turn on, interior lights that won’t switch off, or indicator lights on the dashboard that behave erratically. Again, these problems can arise because the GEM module controls these systems.

A more serious symptom of a bad GEM module is the vehicle failing to start. The GEM module communicates with the ignition system, and a fault in the module can prevent this communication, leading to the vehicle not starting.

If your vehicle has four-wheel drive and you’re having trouble engaging it, this could also be a symptom of a bad GEM module. In some vehicles, the GEM module plays a role in controlling the four-wheel drive system.

If your car’s battery is draining faster than usual, it might be due to a faulty GEM module. Some faults can cause the module to draw power even when the vehicle is turned off, leading to a drained battery.

Causes of a Failing GEM Module

A failing GEM module can be caused by a variety of issues, including water damage, electrical shorts, or wear and tear from age.

One of the most common causes of a failing GEM module is water damage. The module is often located in places susceptible to leaks, such as near the windshield or sunroof. If water gets into the module, it can cause corrosion or short-circuiting, leading to failure.

Electrical shorts in the vehicle’s wiring can also cause a GEM module to fail. If there’s a short somewhere in the system, it can overload the module with too much electricity, causing it to burn out.

Just like any other electronic component, a GEM module can simply wear out over time. As the module ages, its components can degrade, leading to eventual failure. This is particularly true in older vehicles, where the module may not have been designed to last as long as the vehicle itself.

If a GEM module has been replaced or installed improperly, it can lead to failure. This could be due to incorrect installation procedures, the use of an incompatible module, or even just not securing the module properly, leading to vibration and damage.

Voltage overload from a faulty alternator or battery can also cause a GEM module to fail. If the vehicle’s electrical system produces too much voltage, it can overload the module and cause it to burn out.

Testing The GEM Module

Testing a bad GEM module in a vehicle involves diagnosing the symptoms, using a code reader or scanner tool to check for trouble codes, and inspecting the module for signs of physical damage.

The first step in testing a bad GEM module is to diagnose the symptoms. As mentioned earlier, symptoms of a bad GEM module can include issues with power windows, locks, and lights, the vehicle failing to start, four-wheel drive problems, and unusual battery drain. If your vehicle is exhibiting any of these symptoms, it could indicate a problem with the GEM module.

Next, use a code reader or scanner tool to check for trouble codes. Many modern vehicles have an onboard diagnostic system that can generate and store trouble codes when it detects a problem.

These codes can often be read using a code reader or scanner tool, which you can purchase or rent from many auto parts stores. If the GEM module is failing, there may be trouble codes related to the systems it controls.

Finally, inspect the GEM module for signs of physical damage. This could include signs of water damage, corrosion, or burn marks that could indicate an electrical short. In some cases, you may need to remove the GEM module from the vehicle to inspect it thoroughly.

How To Replace The GEM Module

Replacing the GEM module involves locating the module, disconnecting the battery, removing the old module, and installing the new one.

The first step to replace the GEM module is to locate it. The location of the GEM module can vary depending on the make and model of your vehicle. It’s usually located behind the center console or under the dashboard on the driver’s side. You may need to refer to your vehicle’s service manual or look online for specific information about your model.

Before you start working on any electrical components in your vehicle, it’s important to disconnect the battery. This will prevent any electrical shorts or shocks while you’re replacing the module. Always disconnect the negative terminal first to avoid any potential sparks.

Once you’ve located the GEM module and disconnected the battery, you can remove the old module. This usually involves removing some screws or bolts and unplugging the electrical connectors. Be careful not to pull on the wires when disconnecting them, as this could damage the connectors.

After you’ve removed the old GEM module, you can install the new one ( get one on amazon.com ). Connect the electrical connectors to the new module, ensuring they’re secure. Then, screw or bolt the module into place. Make sure it’s properly secured and won’t move around while you’re driving.

Finally, reconnect the battery (positive terminal first), and test the system to ensure everything is working correctly. Turn on your vehicle and check the functions controlled by the GEM module (power windows, locks, lights, etc.). If everything is working as it should, then the replacement was successful.

How To Reprogram The GEM Module

Reprogramming the GEM module involves connecting a diagnostic tool, accessing the module’s programming settings, and inputting the correct software or calibration files.

Firstly, you need to connect a diagnostic tool. This is usually a specialized device that can interface with your vehicle’s onboard computer systems. The type of tool required can vary depending on the make and model of your vehicle, but often, a professional-grade scanner tool is needed for this task.

Once the diagnostic tool is connected, use it to access the GEM module’s programming settings. This typically involves navigating through various menus on the tool until you reach the section for the GEM module.

After accessing the GEM module’s programming settings, you will then need to input the correct software or calibration files. These files tell the GEM module how to control various functions in your vehicle. They are typically provided by the vehicle’s manufacturer and may need to be downloaded from their website or a specific service portal.

  • Regularly inspect your vehicle’s electrical system: Regular checks can help spot potential problems early.
  • Keep the vehicle dry: Water damage is a common cause of GEM module failure. Try to park in a garage or under cover during heavy rain or snow.
  • Avoid jump-starting your vehicle: Jump-starts can sometimes cause voltage spikes that damage the GEM module.
  • Use a surge protector: If you need to jump-start your vehicle, use a surge protector to prevent voltage spikes.
  • Keep the battery in good condition: A failing battery can cause voltage fluctuations that may damage the GEM module.
  • Regular servicing: Regular servicing by a professional mechanic can help spot and fix potential problems before they cause GEM module failure.
  • Use quality replacement parts: If you need to replace the GEM module or any related components, make sure to use high-quality parts that meet or exceed the manufacturer’s specifications.
  • Protect from extreme temperatures: Extreme heat or cold can affect the operation of the GEM module. Try to park in a garage or in the shade during hot weather, and consider using a block heater in extremely cold conditions.
  • Follow manufacturer’s guidelines: Always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for maintenance and care of your vehicle’s electrical system.

The cost of replacing a GEM (Generic Electronic Module) can vary widely depending on the make and model of your vehicle, but it generally ranges from $200 to $600 including parts and labor.

The price of the GEM module itself can range from $100 to $300 or more, again depending on the specific make and model of your vehicle. Some vehicles may require a more expensive module, while others use a less costly one.

In addition to the cost of the part, you’ll also need to factor in the cost of labor. The process of replacing the GEM module can be complex and time-consuming, requiring a skilled mechanic or auto electrician.

Labor costs can range from $100 to $300, depending on the hourly rate of the mechanic and the complexity of the job.

  • Wipers: The GEM controls the operation of the windshield wipers.
  • Lights: This includes both interior lights and exterior lights such as headlights and turn signals.
  • Power windows: The GEM can control the operation of power windows.
  • Central locking: The GEM often controls the central locking system, including keyless entry.
  • Alarm system: If the vehicle has an alarm system, the GEM may control it.
  • Power mirrors: In some vehicles, the GEM controls the adjustment of power mirrors.
  • Climate control: The GEM can control aspects of the vehicle’s climate control system.
  • Battery saving: The GEM may control power to various systems to prevent battery drain when the vehicle is not in use.

Replacing a GEM (Generic Electronic Module) yourself is possible if you have good automotive repair skills. But, it’s generally recommended to have this done by a professional due to its complexity.

Incorrect installation or mishandling of the module could potentially lead to other issues with your car’s electrical systems.

Another factor to consider is the programming and calibration that may be required after installing a new GEM module. This often requires specialized equipment and knowledge that most home mechanics don’t have access to.

While it’s technically possible to drive with a bad GEM (Generic Electronic Module), it’s generally not recommended because of the potential for it to affect various critical systems in your vehicle.

A faulty GEM module could impact the functionality of a wide range of systems in your car, from windshield wipers and lights to power windows and the central locking system.

This could lead to safety issues, like being unable to clear your windshield in the rain or your lights not functioning properly in the dark.

The GEM (Generic Electronic Module) is typically located behind the center console or under the dashboard on the driver’s side of the vehicle.

The exact location of the GEM module can vary depending on the make and model of your vehicle.

However, in most cases, it’s found inside the cab of the vehicle, often behind the center console or underneath the dashboard on the driver’s side.

This placement allows easy access to the various systems it controls.

Accessing the GEM module usually requires removing some interior trim or panels. This should be done carefully to avoid damaging any parts.

Once the module is exposed, it can typically be removed by disconnecting the wiring harness and removing a few screws or bolts.

While it is technically possible to repair a GEM (Generic Electronic Module), it is generally recommended to replace it with a new one due to the complexity and precision required in the repair process.

Gem module replacement

  • Add to quote

So after having my batteries drain over a 2 day period ,I started to look at the battery drain and I have a .5 amp continuous on the gem module. I have pulled interior lights and brake pedal switch connector and no change . Do these modules go bad internally? We did have a rotted windshield frame so it could of had water get to it.

2001 ford excursion gem module

It's possible that the GEM has been damaged by water intrusion. If you do replace the GEM, you'll need to get the replacement programmed to match the old one. A maximum 50mA draw with all the modules asleep is normal. That's 1/10 of what you're seeing. Are you sure that you've checked with modules asleep? The way to do that is to leave the door open till the interior lights go off, then check the draw. If you interrupt power connecting your meter, the modules will wake up and draw more power.

I had the door shut and the reading never changed after more than 1/2 hr.

After a exhaustive search for this drain on my batteries ,it turns out I have one bad battery and was drawing the other one down over nite. I brought both batteries and alternator and had them load tested at a chain store and both batteries showed good . I pulled the fuse box,Gem module out to look for corrosion/water marks and it was clean . It wasn't until my Dad suggested trying to start the truck off each battery individually to load test them did I find it. So check your batteries even when they say they are good from a parts store. So hopefully that's the end of my issues.

Thanks for closing the loop on this. Batteries always need to be load tested individually. Your Dad's starter test was a quick and dirty way to do that. Good suggestion.

That's the weird thing, I brought each battery in and put them on the counter of the parts store. Both tested good.

I went thru a couple from a junkyard and so far one from a 4x2 version works on mine but no 4x4 & now the radio doesn't work plus no rear wiper function.... Looking at out-of-state wrecking yards for another module too. Supposedly you can re-hab your original but that means finding the right resistors and doing some solder-work... Or find an electronics repair firm to test the circuit board and repair components/circuitry. Click to expand...

Best of luck with whatever you decide (fix or new truck). In regards to parts, it's my understanding that when a model is no longer exists, parts are to be supplied for up to 10 years. Since your Excursion is well beyond that, it's no surprise things are getting harder to find. @13COBRA - Getting rid of it already???

It should be part number MFM16RM (14B205) and they are available for a 2001 Excursion with the 6.8L from what im seeing. Cost is $300.14 with a $50 core charge. See if Auto Nation can get it? Well, bad news gentlemen. My Ford parts department called me just now. The GEM order was placed on intergalactic backorder by Ford with a fulfillment date of November 2020. Pretty much meaning that they are, in fact, done refurbishing the modules. This is not good news for me, or even guys trying to keep their rigs running.

FYI for guys trying to find one of these for either a Super Duty or Excursion, I ran the production number on the GEM (in my case 1C3T-14B205-EB) on ebay and found one reportedly refurbished from a seller called your_part_source . 3 month warranty with it, but was offered a 1 year Square Trade insurance policy on it for $50 from ebay. Seller had a 100% positive rating with 22,000+ rating. Ordered one. Got my fingers crossed its good. If not, at least I can get my money back.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Keywords: Tuva, Early Iron Age, early Scythian period, Aldy-Bel culture, barrow, burial in the coffin, mummy, full genome sequencing, aDNA
